School stats
On our report on Rochester schools’ low test scores: Reporter
Tim Macaluso mentions the scores of students at School 58 but fails to mention the number of students who opted out of the test. School 58 had one of the highest opt-out rates in the state. One hundred percent of 8th graders opted out last year alone. Only a handful of students actually “sat” for the test compared to the majority of students who sat for it in Fairport. I would expect City Newspaper to dive a bit deeper rather than presenting only one thread of the story. The comparison between the city schools and the suburban ones in this fashion supports what so much of the community already believes: that you simply cannot get a good education in the Rochester school district. There is already enough institutional racism within our city. This doesn’t help. SARA OLIVEIRI
Flu season
I moved to Rochester four months ago to start my residency training in family medicine. Just barely into the flu season, I’ve already noticed a disturbing trend: Many people do not want the flu shot. 2 CITY
OCTOBER 10 - 16, 2018
We just recently received the vaccine in my office, and of the handful of patients I have offered it to, all declined it. Earlier this year, as a fourth-year medical student in North Carolina, I watched peoples’ lungs fail, require a ventilator, and in some cases die from the flu. Some facts about the flu vaccine: 1) The flu shot does not give you the flu. People who have gotten the shot and then got sick shortly thereafter unluckily came in contact with the virus before the vaccine had a chance to work (which takes several weeks). 2) You can still get the flu long after getting the shot. However, it is usually a much milder and shorter illness because of the shot. 3) People do need the flu shot every year. The exact breed of virus is different from year to year; thus the vaccine is different every year. 4) Some people say, “I’ve never had the flu, so I don’t need the shot.” Again, the flu virus is different from year to year. What happened last year says nothing about what will happen this year. Every year without getting the vaccine is a roll of the dice. 5) There are some instances where the specific formulations of the vaccine can be unadvised in some patients. Thus if people have questions, they should speak to their doctor. DOMINICK DEFELICE

GUEST COMMENTARY | Mary Anna Towler’s Urban Journal will return next week.
The significance of Indigenous Peoples Day Last week, Mayor Lovely Warren issued a proclamation recognizing the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples Day in addition to the traditional celebration of Columbus Day. Guest columnists Ronald Garrow and Kathy Castania offer their perspectives on the need for the proclamation and the opportunities it offers.
‘This is a first step’
‘This can liberate us all’
BY RONALD GARROW
BY KATHY CASTANIA
Garrow, an Akwesasne Mohawk, Bear Clan, is an indigenous-rights activist and educator. He is working to change curriculum in local districts and is cultural advisor to SURJ ROC (Showing Up for Racial Justice). He grew up in Rochester, and members of his extended family live on the Akwesasne reservation.
Castania is the co-chair of the Education Committee of SURJ ROC and is a lead facilitator with the Opening Doors Diversity Project. Kathy has been leading workshops on power and privilege for more than 25 years. She lived for a time in her grandfather’s village of Montedoro, Caltanisetta Region, Sicily. Both Garrow and Castania are members of the Indigenous Peoples Planning Committee.
Indigenous Peoples Day is important to me, because growing up in Rochester and attending city schools, I was exposed to a colonized classroom. I was taught that Columbus Day was declared a legal holiday to commemorate the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus in 1492. We learned about his voyage and the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. We learned about his plan to sail west in an attempt to find a new route to Asia, where spices and gold would be traded. What we were not taught in class was that for Indigenous Peoples, the date 1492 signifies the beginning of a systematic attempt at genocide. The colonized classroom did not teach about the enslavement of the Native People. They did not teach us that Columbus and his crew raped and murdered the Native People of the land. They didn’t teach us that Columbus brought with him disease and the destruction of Native Peoples’ cultures. As an Indigenous person, I was forced to celebrate a holiday that represented colonization and the enslavement of my people. Without questioning a thing, I made art projects, sang songs, and wrote reports about the contributions of Christopher Columbus. Indigenous Peoples Day begins to recognize the atrocities committed by Columbus and his crew, and is the first step towards decolonizing the classroom and teaching a more honest and fair representation of this history.
The City of Rochester’s proclamation recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day in addition to Columbus Day can be seen as a step toward liberation for us as Italian Americans. I know for some of us it feels like a loss and brings up fear and anxiety about losing a symbol that at one time in our history we needed. As a resilient and intelligent people, however, we can support each other to deal with this sense of loss and adopt more empowering symbols. This can be an opportunity to start important discussions about celebrating our rich and beautiful culture without it being connected to someone who brought death and destruction to Native People. We can together begin to reclaim a truer, more accurate history – one that our ancestors might embrace if they were alive. In truth, Christopher Columbus was working for the same systems of power and colonization that for centuries were in Southern Italy and Sicily, where most of the Italian Americans in our community are descendent from. These systems were so oppressive that they eventually drove tens of thousands of our people to leave their homeland, discouraged by their continued mistreatment by the government and the monarchies, including Spain, much like they and Columbus used the Tainos and Arawak people he encountered. continues on page 8

Wells elected MCDC chair
Members of the Monroe County Democratic Committee elected Brittaney Wells as the party’s chair during an organizational meeting last week. Wells, who’s been the committee’s executive director since early August and was also serving as its vice chair, has already started her two-year term. Jamie Romeo served as the party’s chair for the past three years, but she didn’t run for reelection. She won a Democratic primary for an Assembly seat last month and is uncontested in the upcoming general election. Wells was Mayor Lovely Warren’s campaign manager for her 2017 primary and general election bids. Until she started at Democratic HQ, Wells served as director of the City of Rochester’s Office of Community Wealth Building. She’s also worked on City Council, State Assembly, congressional, and presidential campaigns.
Cuomo gains ballot line
Governor Andrew Cuomo accepted the Working Families Party line, which was previously held by his Democratic primary opponent, Cynthia Nixon. The party offered the line to Cuomo after Nixon ended her campaign.

Cuomo and the Working Families Party have frequently been at odds with each other; the party’s endorsement of Nixon was seen as a rebuke of Cuomo. Now they’re in a marriage of convenience, since neither the party nor Cuomo wants Republican Marc Molinaro to win the governor’s race. And the Working Families Party needs to pull in 50,000 votes statewide to keep its guaranteed place on New York ballots.
UR celebrates Nobel winners
The 2018 Nobel Prize in physics went to University of Rochester alums Gérard Mourou and Donna Strickland, for their work developing “chirped-pulse amplification” technology. CPA technology paved the way for more precise, high-intensity lasers. Strickland and Mourou were researchers at the UR’s laser lab. Strickland is the first woman in 55 years to receive the Nobel Prize in physics. A third UR alum, Paul Romer, also received a Nobel Prize. Romer was recognized for his work on the economics of technological change and the creation of new technologies. He’s a former assistant professor of economics at the UR and currently he’s a professor at New York University.

The new Erie Harbor Park walkway is behind Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, off of Court Street. PHOTO BY RYAN WILLIAMSON
DEVELOPMENT | BY TIM LOUIS MACAULSO
Walking on the riverfront Just west of Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, jutting out off of the sidewalk on the Court Street Bridge, is the entrance to a new pedestrian walkway that swerves out over the edge of the Genesee River. It then heads behind the restaurant where it stops for now due to construction of the new Nathaniel apartment complex on the east side of the river. But in that short span of about 100 feet is one of the city’s best up-close views of the river and its rushing force just below. The walkway, which is open to the public now, will eventually connect to a promenade next to the apartments. The project, which has been named
the Promenade at Erie Harbor Park, offers a glimpse of how the city’s ROC the Riverway plan is taking shape and will dramatically transform the public’s access to the river. When the promenade is completed, pedestrians will have a much more engaging experience with the Genesee River, something entirely different from driving over the river and seeing it from a car. You’ll be close enough to hear the Genesee, which can be quite forceful at times as it flows over the Court Street Dam. And the views are spectacular: you can see the dam, the Frederick Douglass-Susan B.
Anthony Bridge, the aqueduct, and portions of downtown. You’ll also be closer to some of the river’s wildlife: seagulls swirling overhead, ducks paddling in the shallow ends of the river, cranes perched on logs and rocks. The walkway’s central location will eventually connect some of the key elements of the ROC the Riverway project: the ROC City Skate Park to the south and the aqueduct to the north. City planners hope that as more of the pieces of ROC the Riverway are completed, the underutilized riverfront will attract more development, downtown activities, and tourists.
“We’re not saying don’t touch the deck. But the journey from where they are now to what they’re proposing is long and complicated. There’s myriad questions and design issues that need to be addressed.” TOM CASTELEIN, ARCHITECT AND PRESIDENT OF THE LANDMARK SOCIETY BOARD
PRESERVATION | BY TIM LOUIS MACALUSO
Aqueduct, Colgate worry preservationists The Landmark Society of Western New York has usually used its annual “Five to Revive” list to draw public attention and financial support to restoring historic buildings throughout the Rochester region. With the list, the Landmark Society is telling communities and developers that there’s unmined gold in repurposing – rather than ignoring or demolishing – these architecturally significant properties. The program has been successful at saving and repurposing some buildings on its lists. This year, however, the Landmark Society is taking a slightly different approach to its Five to Revive by including two sites that the Rochester community already recognizes as treasures, but that are surrounded by controversy: the aqueduct over the Genesee River and the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School campus. And for those projects, the Landmark Society isn’t just calling for their protection. It’s also weighing in on how the sites ought to be redeveloped. For instance, the city is planning to remove the section of Broad Street over the river that covers the Erie Canal aqueduct to create a pedestrian area. Landmark Society officials say the aqueduct is one of the city’s most important historical assets and preservationists should have a voice

concerning any plans to change it. “We’re not saying don’t touch the deck,” says Tom Castelein, an architect who is president of the Landmark Society board. “But the journey from where they are now to what they’re proposing is long and complicated. There’s myriad questions and design issues that need to be addressed.” The aqueduct is a complex structure and transforming it will require removing some elements and adding others, and how that is approached is critically important, Castelein says. What’s done with the aqueduct could be a catalyst for more downtown development, or it could lead to the aqueduct becoming a future problem like the Inner Loop, he says. Landmark Society officials are equally concerned about the future of the divinity school property. The 24-acre site near Highland Park is a city landmark and it’s eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The property is being sold to local developer Angelo Ingrassia, and no redevelopment plans have been made public. But at a Highland Park neighborhood meeting earlier this year, Ingrassia said the property’s picturesque hillside would someday need to be developed. That’s something the Landmark
Society would strongly oppose, says Wayne Goodman, the organization’s executive director. The full Five to Revive list includes Parrott Hall in Geneva, Odd Fellows Hall in Holley, and the former National Yeast Company and Iroquois Motor Car Factory in Seneca Falls. Parrott Hall was built in the 1850’s as the home of Nehemiah and Louisa Denton. When Regional Transit Service officials rolled out a consultant’s recommendations for its fixed bus routes, they received some mixed reactions. But some bus users and elected officials immediately raised alarm over recommendations to eliminate lesser-used lines that extend into suburban communities such as Brockport, Henrietta, and Webster. “I’m not happy with the plan as it currently stands.” says Henrietta Supervisor Stephen Schultz. He notes that if RTS were to implement the recommendations, a line servicing Rochester Institute of Technology would be cut, and the new VA facility that’ll open soon won’t be covered.

OCTOBER 10 - 16, 2018
But Reimagine RTS will enter its second stage this month, and its focus will be on filling the service gaps that would be created by eliminating some of the suburban lines. Transit agency officials say they’re not stripping transit service from the suburban areas that are losing lines. Instead, they want to take a new approach with them: they’re calling the areas mobility zones, and they want to find ways to provide a public transit service in them without relying on full-size 40- and 60- foot buses. To be clear, no Reimagine RTS-related route changes have been made as of yet. Any decision to alter, add, or remove routes will be made by the agency’s board after the full Reimagine RTS process is complete. Officials expect that changes coming out of the process will take effect in 2020. The mobility zone approach was born largely out of necessity. RTS has a limited budget and it can’t rely on the state and federal governments to provide additional funding. Running big buses costs a lot of money, and often the ones that make trips into the suburbs aren’t very full.
RTS staff and officials know this because staff rode the lines and collected detailed data about where riders are getting on and off the buses, says Bill Carpenter, RTS’s CEO. Carpenter uses the route between downtown Rochester and Webster as an example of the inefficiency of some of the routes recommended for elimination. Each day a full-size bus makes 10 trips between downtown Rochester and Webster, carrying a total of 140 people; a 40-foot bus can carry roughly 40 passengers. Other routes are in a similar situation. Carpenter says ridership is a little higher on the Henrietta route that the consultant recommended chopping, but it’s lower on routes serving parts of Irondequoit, North Greece, and the Pittsford-Eastview Mall area. RTS has designated all of these areas as mobility zones. Also, RTS has reduced the bus frequency on these routes in an effort to sustain them, which makes them less convenient for existing and prospective users. “Our customers are looking for us to find better ways to serve them,” Carpenter says.
The mobility zone concept is new, and RTS doesn’t have a firm plan for how each will function. Each community could see a different approach. Potential solutions floated by RTS officials range from comparatively simple to intricate. For example, RTS could make broader use of smaller buses – similar to the vehicles it uses for its paratransit service – to serve transit customers in the suburbs, which are less dense than the the transit system’s urban core. Or there may be a way to use smaller buses or vans to provide some degree of on-demand service. The smaller vehicles cost less to buy and operate. Van pooling, where a group of people who live in a community and commute daily to the same area share an RTS van, could be incorporated into some of these mobility zones, RTS officials say. Ridesharing services and the city’s Pace bike share may also play a role. And some mobility zone approaches may not even exist yet, says RTS spokesperson Tom Brede. The transportation industry as a whole is in the midst of a transition due to the rise of things such as bike sharing, Uber, and Lyft. Brede and Carpenter say RTS will be reaching out to town supervisors and mayors in these new mobility zones to help gather public input. The agency plans to hold some public events on mobility zones. A consultant will help RTS gather and analyze the public input, and will develop recommendations for the organization regarding mobility zones. “One of our messages, hard as it is to ask, is to just please be patient with us because we’ve got to go through this step,” Brede says. But RTS users and some suburban elected officials are still anxious about the prospect of losing fixed routes, in large part because they don’t know what to expect out of this next Reimagine RTS stage. Pittsford town officials were initially alarmed by a suggestion to trim back a route in the town; Carpenter talked to the Town Board and has been in contact with officials. Henrietta’s Schultz says he talked with RTS officials about a few possibilities, including a route that loops through the town that stops at some key destinations and maybe even Monroe Community College, where riders could catch a bus downtown. He says he likes that idea, but he’s still worried by the lack of concrete detail. “There’s a bunch of stuff left out of the plan that I’m not happy with,” Schultz says.

OCTOBER 10 - 16, 2018
They treated our ancestors virtually as slaves in the fields and sulfur mines. Our ancestors lived as feudal serfs, not even able to own land. In truth, our people were at the receiving end in Italy of what drove Columbus to do what he did here in the Americas: obsession with the desire to take gold to the king and queen of Spain at any human cost, including cutting off of hands, enslavement, and genocide. Escaping this history in Italy and Sicily, our people came here with high hopes of finally being treated as human beings. Instead, they were targeted by eugenics and were considered a biological threat to the US racial order. They were lynched, demonized in the media, and segregated from other white workers. In Rochester, as Jerre Mangione told in his book, “Mt. Allegro,” Italians were not even allowed to rent apartments. No wonder that in 1937 the Knights of Columbus and other Italian American fraternal organizations were so quick to adopt Columbus and use that holiday as a platform for redefining our identity in line with “white” people in the US. We now have an opportunity to move away from one narrative and instead learn multiple perspectives, creating a win-win and rejecting our part in the construction of whiteness. Indigenous Peoples Day in Rochester is a call to all of us to start to reclaim our true history and find in ourselves the wisdom, power, and pride that came from strong and hospitable people who knew how to survive in the face of oppression. Let’s see this change as a newfound freedom to pass on to our children and grandchildren – a way to really celebrate those who came before them, honoring their hard work, fights for justice, and resiliency, instead of a false hero.

Just a stone’s throw removed from the busiest section of East Avenue, the space at 7 Lawrence Street is, in a word, uninviting. The building is long, low, and dark, distinguished only by its triangular orange portico. Once a garage, 7 Lawrence Street has hosted a string of restaurants and bars in recent years, including the Pig N Whistle and Doc
Holliday’s American Whiskey Bar and Grille. Now the building’s new owners, partners Mark Siwiec and Duffy Palmer, are working to transform this space into 80W, Rochester’s newest upscale bar and lounge. The new business is situated directly across the street from live music venue Anthology, and will serve craft cocktails, wine, and beer, as well as a menu of small plates and desserts. It is the first commercial venture for Siwiec, a well-known local real estate agent, and Palmer, former state Deputy Secretary of Education. But neither is a stranger to hospitality. During the more than twenty years they’ve been together, Siwiec and Palmer have done plenty of entertaining. Palmer describes
the new business as an extension of their living room — a place for friends to gather and linger. The name 80W is actually shorthand for the couple’s home address, where they frequently host guests. “We’ve already had two parties this week,” Palmer said on a recent Wednesday. Siwiec and Palmer say they have thought about opening a bar for years, but when they finally set their plans in motion, things progressed swiftly. The couple purchased the building in May, began interior demolition in July, and are planning for a soft opening for some time in mid to late October, Palmer says. They have spent about $300,000 on renovations so far, with help from interior designer Karen Hill, who recently completed the interior of newlyopened Native Eatery and Bar. For 80W, Hill helped Siwiec and Palmer create an intimate, club-like atmosphere with leather sofas, deep armchairs, dim lighting, and a custommade cherry wood bar top. At the back of the space, a flight of stairs leads to a VIP lounge which can be reserved for private functions. Valet service will be available Thursday through Saturday. When asked why they chose the East End for their business, Palmer says, “We think this is the area that will change the most in the coming years.” He credits the closing of the Inner Loop and increased residential development with allowing the East End to expand and flourish. Though he acknowledges there are already quite a few bars in the area, Palmer believes there is room for growth. For one thing, 80W is geared towards a slightly different demographic than many other bars in the East End, which has long been a hotspot for university students and 20-something revelers. Palmer says 80W will be slower-paced, more intimate, and attract a slightly older crowd. He envisions it as a popular choice for city workers on their way home from the office, or for concert patrons grabbing a drink before an RPO concert. 80W will keep slightly different hours than its neighbors, too, closing at midnight on weekends rather than 2 a.m. as other area bars do. On Sundays, Palmer expects to serve brunch and screen football games. Palmer says that he and Siwiec might continue on in the hospitality industry if 80W does well. “Mark’s already talking about another business,” he says. rochestercitynewspaper.com

WILLFULLY WEIRD Joe Tunis and Carbon Records celebrate 25 years of music
[ MUSIC FEATURE ] BY DANIEL J. KUSHNER
It’s a little over 20 minutes into my interview with Joe Tunis, the owner of the local music label Carbon Records, and the noise-rock musician’s terse, wry delivery begins to creep in: “I was going to ask you: I wasn’t sure if the record label and the music thing was your full-time gig.” “No, not even close.” Tunis says, laughing. “It’s a time- and money-suck.” “Right, but you’ve been doing it for almost 25 years now.” “I’m stubborn.” On first impression alone, Joe Tunis doesn’t have the look of a Rochester music mogul, however modest his appearance. He wears glasses, but he also sports a short, non-hipster beard, and he can frequently be seen in a worn t-shirt and Montreal Expos baseball cap. Tunis certainly has the look of an RIT alum, computer software developer, and family man who’s played his fair share of Frisbee golf. But it’s also the look of a DIY entrepreneur who still operates the same fledgling record company for indie rock and experimental music that he started in April 1994. In the coming spring, Carbon Records will celebrate a quarter-century in existence, but the silver jubilee has arrived early this fall with a slew of new music, both digitally and on vinyl: September album releases from bands Crush The Junta and Nod (“Hermanos de la Muerte” and “So Much Tonight,” respectively); an epic compilation of guitar-based compositions called “Wound,” available November 2; and forthcoming records by Pengo, with “File Under WTF???” and Ian Downey Is Famous, with “Destroy Language,” both to be released between December and January. Having slowed down the label’s output in recent years, and with the milestone fast approaching, Tunis says he thought, “I gotta do something – whether it’s the last hurrah or not.” That ominous statement notwithstanding, it seems unlikely that Tunis will call it quits with Carbon, which he calls his “passion project.” “I have a really hard time quitting things,” he admits. Although “Wound” features mostly artists from around the United States and the world, Carbon Records’ new albums collectively form an accurate reflection of the Rochester music scene over the last few decades, as experienced by Tunis. John Schoen, Tunis’s longtime friend and Pengo bandmate, calls Carbon Records an “idiosyncratic record label.” “It’s very much about what Joe is into, and not about what’s popular or what’s going to move units, Schoen says. “It’s perfect in its singular, personal worldview.” Asked if he was sure what he didn’t want when starting the label, Tunis is unequivocal: “I didn’t want to put out something that I didn’t like but I knew would make money, so I’ve never done that.” Pengo, a visceral noise-rock band that also manages be both quirky and ruminative, is one of several Carbon Records groups – Crush The Junta, Tuurd, and Tumul among them – in which Tunis currently participates. A multi-instrumentalist, Tunis doesn’t readily identify as a musician, and he hesitates to say that he plays guitar. “I own a guitar and I use it,” he says. “And I use it for sound.”
Tunis first fell in love with weirder music as a teenager in Scranton, Pennsylvania, while working maintenance at a department store. The general manager was an avid record collector who frequently made mix tapes from his purchases. Tunis vividly recalls listening to one of them and hearing the infectiously bizarre “Jimi” by Butthole Surfers. Tunis had previously been exposed only to decidedly more mainstream bands like Genesis and Yes. The following summer, Tunis began searching for the artists featured on his boss’s compilation tape, and the bug had bit. As a computer science student at RIT, Tunis befriended Rob Nuuja, who became a close friend and musical collaborator for Carbon Records. It was Nuuja who introduced Tunis to his favorite band, New Zealand’s The Dead C. In the ensuing years, Tunis became hooked by the noise-rock sound of bands like Sonic Youth and Swans. Whether listening to music or performing it, there’s a particular sound that Tunis is after. “I always love it when I can get there, the edge of where feedback’s about to start,” Tunis says, “so I don’t even know how to describe it. But you’re sort of controlling the sound in a way, and if you let it go too far, especially with microphones or stuff like that, you’re going to get a nasty feedback. But if you can control it a way where you’re teetering on this edge of almost-feedback, and you get these kind of crackly, ghost-y sounds: I’ve always been fascinated by that.” That’s not to say that Carbon Records is exclusively an experimental noise label. In the early days, Tunis predominantly released indie rock records, such as seven-inch records by Flywheel and his own band Muler, as well as a couple of CD’s with fairly traditional packaging. In subsequent years, Carbon produced albums by rock bands like Hinkley, Attic Abasement, Green Dreams, and Tunis’s old math-rock outfit Hilkka. The new albums by Nod and Ian Downey Is Famous bridge the gap between more accessible garage-rock tendencies and the avant-garde. While poppier than Carbon’s noise artists, both bands have a left-of-center unpredictability. “A lot of the groups came out of an indie or post-punk-type mindset,” Nod frontman Joe Sorriero says. “Around the same time, I think a lot of us were trying to get more weird and just get more experimental. I think there was a communal push among a lot of these people to try to make things different in the music they were already performing.” “I think generally what inspires me the most is literally just the physical sound, and getting ideas for combining different sounds together – and really wanting to see, almost clinically, ‘Is it really going to turn out the way I think it might turn out?’ ” says Chad Oliveiri, who makes solo music and performs with Tunis and Cameron Farash in the band Jungle Heart. “And it almost never does, and there’s all the little happy accidents that go along with it that I always find very compelling.” The experimental wing of rock music seems to provide an important niche for musicians who might otherwise fall through the stylistic cracks. “The noise scene, including Carbon Records, is a place rochestercitynewspaper.com CITY 11
where people can come if they feel like they’re not cool enough for the punk and other scenes,” Ian Downey says. Tunis acknowledges that the local rockexperimental music scene is still male-dominated, but he also points out that bands like the female-fronted Anamon and Green Dreams are becoming more prominent. Tunis says he feels that if more women play music onstage, more women will come to listen. “We need more women making stupid music like us,” he says. Oliveiri first met Joe Tunis around 2000 while covering under-the-radar musicians as a journalist for CITY, and the two men became fast friends and eventual bandmates in Jungle Heart. In Tunis, Oliveiri found a kindred creative spirit with whom he could confide the music he wanted to make. “If it wasn’t for Joe, his encouragement and his friendship, I probably never would have put music out publicly,” Oliveiri says. “And I’m sure I’m not the only person on the label who would say that.” Olivieri says Tunis the businessman is a details-oriented advocate, whereas as a musician, he leaves room for disorder as a creative quality. For Carbon Records as a company, the sea change toward the weird began in 2000, when compact disc players finally began to catch up to CD-R’s and CD burning technology. By 1997, Tunis had invested in a Philips CD burner that cost less than $1,000 – a steal at the time – and a spindle of 100 discs for $600, but no one could hear the music properly on their CD players. Once CD-R’s became functional, Tunis seized on the opportunity to produce more albums at less cost. Beginning in the fall of 2000, Tunis produced a year-long CD-R series with limited packaging, in which two albums were released each month. An early Carbon Records print advertisement

The pace was grueling, but in terms of production, the turnover was fast. To this day, the output that year represents the high-water mark for the label, and it affected the musical and aesthetic direction of Carbon for years to come. Tunis could indulge in putting out plenty of the music he wanted to hear, and with the minimalist, DIY approach to packaging design (inspired by fellow indie label Table of the Elements, out of Atlanta) that he preferred. Another turning point for Tunis was his involvement with the venue known as the A|V Space. Located in the string of brick buildings lining the Public Market, roughly between 2002 and 2007, the second-story art gallery and performance space was a collaborative effort between Tunis, Eastman School of Music students like bassoonist Lynn Hileman, arts advocates like Rome Celli, and friends such as Oliveiri and Farash. Though the A|V Space was eventually shut down due to a zoning violation, the venue’s impact as an incubator for creative types making different, off-the-path music was the precedent for current alternative art and concert spaces like The Yards, The Psychic Garden, and The Liquor Store. The A|V concerts also introduced curious concertgoers, this writer included, to a whole new realm of delightfully weird music-making. By 2008, the A|V Space was no more. The digital age had CR27: “Miami Made A Mess taken hold, and out of me” by Pengo and the Laundry CD’s and CD-R’s Room Squelchers weren’t selling anymore. Carbon Records has since turned its attention again to vinyl – working with the Cleveland record pressing plant Gotta Groove Records – but the air of experimentation is as fresh as ever. While Carbon Records doesn’t encapsulate all of Rochester’s avant-garde music scene, the label remains a bona fide fixture – a testament
thing. I think he really enjoys doing it.” Though camaraderie between the musicians is an important component, Oliveiri says, it’s also about curating sets that get artists to collaborate together for the first time. “I think sometimes when it comes to underground music or experimental music, and putting that stuff out, people can be somewhat standoffCR226: 15 YR Day-Tour ish or not really open HDD release in terms of talking or PHOTO PROVIDED creating a dialogue around it,” Oliveiri to Tunis’s connection to his fellow musicians in says. “He’s so blue-collar and non-pretentious the community. about it, and that’s something I’ve always really “Performing music and collaborating in admired about him as well.” artwork with Joe is easy,” John Schoen says. in her exquisite phrasing and seductive tonal range. This young lady’s voice slips and slides from a contralto coo to breathy cool. Full of irresistible effervescence, her style is swing-infused jazz that goes way beyond the Winehouse wheelhouse. Brazda’s latest album, “Daydream,” just dropped in September and is front-toback gawgeous. The production is slick, with just a dusting of nostalgia, but it doesn’t threaten to crowd the music or the singer. And despite the band in the room, it’s as if she’s singing directly to you. Consider yourself a Romeo on the make? A lothario on the loose? Well now, this redheaded canary is singing your soundtrack, Jack. It’s beautiful.

On its recent platter-that-matters, “Purple, Green, and Yellow,” Rochester band Anamon invites the listener into the ether and reverb. The atmosphere envelops the dismissive, yet sincere vocals of frontwoman Ana Emily Monaco. The weaponry wielded wonderfully and wildly within is that of a classic rock ‘n’ roll quartet. Yet there’s a pervading darkness that is both deeply soothing and superficially painful, like scratching a mosquito bite. And that feels good, doesn’t it? On “Purple, Green, and Yellow,” the band is guitar-driven and fairly cohesive throughout, even when it takes detours – like the countrified “Outsider,” with its bold Kinks quote, or the saxophone freak-out on “In 3.” Anamon sits back and lets the music wind you up. Your ears have nowhere to hide. It makes cool seem so easy, and frankly, that’s the definition of the word. — BY FRANK DE BLASE

If art were supposed to be perfect and polished, the young and inspired would hit snooze instead of making it, and beautiful albums like Roselove’s “Peachy Keen” would never exist. Set for release on October 13, it’s an unbending work of nonconformist art. Songwriter Rose Love makes herself vulnerable in both the unembellished, unedited way she chose to record “Peachy Keen” and in the honesty of her words. Most of the songs are sparsely arranged for voice and guitar; the clear theme is recovery from trauma. Roselove reminds us that mental illness needs to be talked about, and that recovery can be a slow and complicated process. To be a young cellist praised by The New York Times as “particularly exciting” and by The New Yorker as “stylishly wild” while still a student is exceptional. It’s even more exceptional when you are making your name by performing Bach and other Baroque composers on a period instrument.
18 CITY OCTOBER 10 - 16, 2018
Beiliang Zhu, a doctoral student at the Eastman School of Music and a rising star in the early music world, joins Publick Musick this week for the group’s opening concert of the season, “Cello-bration!” It takes place this Friday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Pittsford, and Saturday at Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word in Rochester. Zhu’s awareness of Baroque music dates from when she was about 10 years old and heard a piece of music she liked on a television program. Calling the station, she was told it was by Georg Philipp Telemann. As a young cellist, she came to love the music of the era, but she admits she knew little about performing it until she came to Eastman and studied with Christel Thielmann, a noted performer on the viola da gamba, the cello’s ancestor. “But as a freshman,” Zhu says, “I just couldn’t understand the music, and wasn’t good at it.” The elusive element was the role of rhetoric: phrasing and inflecting music in what she calls “a speaking way, or like instrumental ‘singing.’” A key point in approaching Baroque music, it involves “translating” the specific emotions in the music into notes and physical gestures. By the time Zhu was a senior at Eastman, she understood the genre, and she also learned more about the physical distinctions of the Baroque cello. These differences include use of gut strings instead of metal ones, as well as not using an end pin, which extrudes from the bottom of a modern cello and holds it steady. When Zhu went to Juilliard for graduate study, she was able, as she puts it, “to be totally immersed in Baroque music.” This immersion led her back to Eastman, for further study with one of the masters of the style, the lutenist Paul O’Dette. “My playing became more alert and confident,” Zhu says. “Paul’s teaching is to learn all the rules in any style of music, before you break them. The most inspiring musicians are the ones who have mastered technique, but who also know when to use what they know.” In 2012, Zhu entered the Leipzig Bach Competition and won its cello performance prize – the first cellist to do so playing a period instrument. The prize raised her profile in the music world, which led to engagements with the Boston Early Music Festival, William Christie, Masaaki Suzuki, and other stellar names in the periodperformance world.
Zhu describes this weekend’s concert, in which she’ll share cello duties with Publick Musick co-artistic director Christopher Haritatos, as “very hard to generalize.” The program presents composers from the early17th to the late-18th centuries: familiar names (to early music lovers, at least) like Girolamo Frescobaldi and Francesco Geminiani, and unfamiliar ones, like JeanBaptiste Bréval, a late-18th century French cellist. They represent an enormous swath of music history, in which composition styles changed a great deal. “It’s comparable to the way that pop music has changed within a half-century or more,” Zhu says. “You can sense many small changes in styles as time passes, and eventually they add up to a generational change.” How does that translate to chamber music? Zhu lists a few examples. “As you progress from 17th to 18th centuries, there are differences in how you ornament,” she says, referring to the unwritten flourishes that the performers add to the sometimes sparse notes on the page. “Also, the tonal system developed and became more complex, so the harmonies you would use in certain passages changed.” Most of the music is written for solo cello – or occasionally two cellos, perhaps with violin – and harpsichord accompaniment. It is intimate and graceful, with a hierarchy of orchestration firmly in place between the solo instrument and the continuo, comprised of the keyboard and bass instruments. As Zhu puts it, “The top part shows off, but the lower parts articulate the structure and the harmony.” The idea of a cello virtuoso barely existed until the late-18th century, so the instrument usually took a modest place in chamber music. “The cello generally does not have a flashy part,” Zhu says. “It is usually an accompaniment instrument, and the music is based on a close interaction among the performers. To me, this music has a refreshing feeling. It doesn’t bombard the ear. It’s like friends talking to each other.”

In its season-opening concert, the Rochester Oratorio Society will present two of classical music’s most cherished melody makers in a sacred context. Led by Artistic Director Eric Townell, the ROS will sing Schubert’s Mass in G, as well as Mendelssohn’s Cantata from “Hymn of Praise.” Here, Schubert’s gift for emotional immediacy and vibrant harmonic language adds musical poignancy to the liturgy, while the “Hymn of Praise” by Mendelssohn features the composer’s effervescent lyricism and meticulously beautiful orchestration. The program also includes the spellbinding “Luminous Night of the Soul” by contemporary Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo.

Karin Bowersock in “Becoming Dr. Ruth,” presented by the JCC and Bristol Valley Theatre through October 21. PHOTO BY RICH MILLER
From sniper to sex educator “Becoming Dr. Ruth” REVIEWED SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6 CONTINUES THROUGH SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21 JCC CENTERSTAGE, 1200 EDGEWOOD AVE. TICKETS START AT $20 | JCCROCHESTER.ORG [ REVIEW ] BY LEAH STACY
Everyone loves a good origin story — a true rags-to-riches, underdog-beats-the-oddstale can be almost as satisfying as good sex. (Almost.) Fortunately, a retelling of the journey of Dr. Ruth Westheimer, from her childhood as a German Jew pre-Holocaust to respected American sex therapist, might just provide both. Through October 21, JCC CenterStage presents the area premiere of “Becoming Dr. Ruth,” a one-woman show produced in conjunction with the Naples-based Bristol Valley Theatre. BVT’s artistic director of 15 seasons, Karin Bowersock, takes on the role of the spunky 4-foot, 7-inch household name. “Becoming Dr. Ruth” was first produced in 2013 and ran off-Broadway for a short time. 22 CITY OCTOBER 10 - 16, 2018
It recounts the life of Dr. Ruth Westheimer, a famous radio and TV personality known for her honest, educational sex therapy. Most audience members will know her for her late night TV show “Sexually Speaking,” one of her 40 books on the topic of sexual wellness, or her signature phrase, “Get Some.” But Ruth Westheimer, born Karola Ruth Siegel, was also a Holocaust survivor, a sniper for the Haganah in Jerusalem, a college professor, and a thrice-married, sometimes single, mother of two. Bowersock is faced with the most daunting work in this show. “Becoming Dr. Ruth” runs 90 minutes without an intermission, and takes place on a static set. Bowersock never leaves this set, but instead breaks the fourth wall almost immediately and the audience spends the show “conversing” with Dr. Ruth as she tells her life story while packing her apartment in 1997. (She’s decided to move very quickly.) This proves a strategic backdrop to bring in relics, photos, and memories from the last 70 years of her life. Bowersock’s focus is impressive, and her commitment to the character of Dr. Ruth is unparalleled, from the bouffant blonde hair and wire-rimmed glasses to the German-
French-Jewish-Brooklyn accent mash up and high-pitched giggle. It’s clear both Bowersock and director David Shane spent a good deal of time studying Westheimer. And the direction keeps the audience engaged throughout the production, eliciting many laughs with Bowersock’s nuance, body language, and plucky delivery. Though there was some stumbling over dates (many to keep straight in this show), it is not Bowersock on stage, it’s Dr. Ruth — and that’s an admirable achievement on opening night. The set and props, in a sense, become the only other characters in the show: an innovative design by David Daniels provides plenty to look at, and creative projections by Brian Prather and Daniel Brodie add necessary historical context. “Becoming Dr. Ruth” aligns with CenterStage artistic director Ralph Meranto’s mission to bring new (or new to Rochester) works to the JCC, but it’s also poignantly timed for current conversations around strong women, sexuality, and oppressed cultures. Regardless of each audience member’s background, “Becoming Dr. Ruth” has relevant lessons for every stage of life.

ART | ‘A BUNCH OF BALONEY’
Based in a Spencerport barn, Loud Cow is an unorthodox space for holding exhibitions of fine art. But twice a year, artist and curator Aaron Delehanty hosts group shows featuring regional artists, and invites the public to the opening night party. The latest event in the series opens this week, spotlighting inflatable drawings/soft sculptures by Ben Entner, kitschy-craft architectural studies by Kurt Treeby, Cecily Culver’s multimedia explorations of the experiences of inanimate objects, and Jason Mombert’s multimedia psycho-pop installations. “A Bunch of Baloney” opens Saturday, October 13, 6 to 10 p.m. at Loud Cow, 13 Pine Hill Road, Spencerport. LITERATURE | ROCHESTER SMALL PRESS BOOK FAIR
Before last year’s VSW Pub Fair I set a budget for purchases and then promptly ignored that number and went to town. I’m not mad about it. Held annually at Visual Studies Workshop’s auditorium, the renamed Rochester Small Press Book Fair features dozens of local and out-of-towner book artists, photographers, independent publishers, and DIY-ers in a market-showcase setting. Visitors can browse and buy artist’s books, photobookworks, magazines, zines, digital publishing, and learn about publishing resources. Returning to the fair again this year is Writers & Books’ Litsplosion series of readings, this year featuring a tribute to State Street Press, author readings, and more, starting at 12:30 p.m. and capped with an open mic that commences at 3:45 p.m. The Rochester Small Press Book Fair takes place Saturday, October 13, noon to 5 p.m., at Visual Studies Workshop, 31 Prince Street. Admission is free. For more information, call 442-8676 or visit vsw.org. — BY REBECCA RAFFERTY

THEATER | ‘FOR COLORED GIRLS…’
Playwright Ntozake Shange’s Obie Award-winning 1974 play “for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf” is what the author describes as a “choreopoem” — 20 separate poems choreographed to music and dance, and performed as monologues. It relates the experiences of seven African American women, identified only by the colors they are assigned, living in a racist and sexist society, and tackles such issues as rape, abandonment, abortion, and domestic violence. The piece will be performed this week by the North Star Players under the direction of David Shakes. “for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf” will be performed at the Multi-Use Community Center (the MuCCC), 142 Atlantic Avenue, from Monday, October 15, through Friday, October 19, at 7:30 p.m.; and on Saturday, October 20, at 4 p.m. Tickets are $15, and $10 for students and seniors. Festival forecast 2018 ImageOut Film Festival CONTINUES THROUGH SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14 IMAGEOUT.ORG [ PREVIEW ] BY REBECCA RAFFERTY
The 26th annual ImageOut Rochester LGBT Film Festival kicked off Thursday, October 4, with an Eve of the Festival Party held at Arbor Loft, and screenings began on Friday, October 5. Continuing through Sunday,
26 CITY OCTOBER 10 - 16, 2018
October 14, this year’s festival features dozens of film screenings that celebrate the world-wide cultures and stories of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. Films include narrative features, documentaries, and a variety of shorts programs screening at the Little Theatre and the Dryden Theatre. Individual film tickets range from $9 to $15. A closing night party will be held at Radio Social on Saturday, October 13, at 9:30 p.m. (More info at imageout. org). Check out our extended coverage at rochestercitynewspaper.com. Annual Pride Parades are celebrations of visibility and hard-won rights, but their origins
are in worldwide solidarity marches that commemorated the Stonewall Riots. In 1978 the LGBT community in Sydney, Australia defiantly transformed their march into a joyful “gay Mardi Gras” with demands: They called for an end to employment and housing discrimination and police harassment, and the repeal of all anti-homosexual laws. Though the organizers had obtained a police permit, it was revoked, and the marchers were met with violence and arrests, which helped spark a nationwide revolution. Marking the 40th anniversary of that march, Jeffrey Walker’s 2018 film, “Riot” depicts the backstory leading up
to the event, centering on the inspiring, hardscrabble community organizing led by Lance Gowland and his friends amid discrimination, criminalization, harassment, and brutality. New York State Premiere. Wednesday, October 10, 6 p.m., Little Theatre 1. ASL interpreted Starring Matt Smith (“Doctor Who” and “The Crown”), Ondi Timoner’s “Mapplethorpe” explores the complicated life and career of rebel-artist Robert Mapplethorpe, who became known for his sharp-contrast, black and white, homoerotic photography. Opening in the late 1960s with Mapplethorpe’s budding romance with Patti Smith (read her own account in her autobiography, “Just Kids”), the film takes viewers into the creatives colony era of the Chelsea Hotel, through Mapplethorpe’s boundary-pushing artistic rise and romances with men, to his untimely death at age 42. Wednesday, October 10, 8:45 p.m., Little Theatre 1. ASL interpreted. In the delightful (partial) period piece, “Wild Nights With Emily,” writer Mabel Todd declares that poet Emily Dickinson (played by Molly Shannon) had a sexual relationship with her sister-in-law, Susan, and backs up her claims with some of Dickinson’s unpublished poems to Susan. Though Madeleine Olnek’s dramatic comedy is rooted in fantasy, the film uses the spinster poetess’s actual poems penned to Susan…so, well, I’m convinced. Thursday, October 11, 5:30 p.m., Little Theatre 1. Following four members from the US Armed Forces, Gabriel Silverman and Fiona Dawson’s documentary “TransMilitary” explores the current administration’s attempts to ban transgender troops, and some active duty service members who are fighting for a policy of inclusion. The film blends the efforts of Captains Jennifer Peace and El Cook, Staff Seargent Logan Ireland, and Corporal Laila Villanueva with glimpses into active deployment and their private lives. New York State Premiere. Saturday, October 13, 1:45 p.m., Dryden Theatre. ASL interpreted.

Recent Alarming Headline At a Port Orange, Florida, Walmart on Sept. 28, Tracy Nigh and her 8-year-old daughter were taking a break on a bench inside the store when 81-year-old Hellmuth Kolb approached them and asked if Nigh was married. "He didn't seem like a threat at first," Nigh told WKMG-TV, but then Kolb started offering to buy the little girl. "The first amount was $100,000, the second
amount was $150,000 and then the final amount was $200,000," Nigh said. "I then said, 'No, we have to go.'" They rose to leave, but Kolb grabbed the girl's wrist and kissed it. Nigh alerted store security, and the encounter was recorded on surveillance video. Another woman reported a similar incident. Kolb was arrested and charged with simple battery and false imprisonment. rochestercitynewspaper.com CITY 31
