Art and artists

On reader Michael Nighan’s letter on the Otterness sculptures at the Memorial Art Gallery: A dear

friend told me how he once enjoyed killing people. He was 19 years old, a combat infantryman in World War ll. He was trained to kill, and he was good at it. Then one time, as he was watching the man he had just shot crumble to the ground, he saw his hand fall open, revealing a wedding ring. Immediately my friend understood that he had destroyed a human being who would be missed by his family. The incident changed his life. After the war, he became a university professor. He became a kind and gentle man who hated war. He became my surrogate father. He had become someone entirely different from that 19-year-old who could kill for pleasure. Michael Nighan does a great disservice to art by implying that the man who murdered that unfortunate dog is the same one who designed that playful, whimsical park at the corner of University and Goodman enjoyed by hundreds of people every day. We do not reject the monumental works of Beethoven and Picasso because one ruined his nephew’s life and the other was a terrible husband and father. Their art is the better part of them, their redemption. Why, then, should we reject Mr. Otterness’s delightful park? If Mr. Nighan is human, and I suspect that he is, we all have sins, some of them serious, that need forgiveness. Mother Nature has not singled out Mr. Otterness. She will hold us

all accountable for the many

killings we have committed and the many insults we have heaped upon her magnificent work of art. We all ought to beg her forgiveness, but first, we ought to change our ways as Mr. Otterness has obviously changed his.

The effects of marijuana

Silly me, I thought the jury was still out on legalized marijuana for New York State, thus the “Listening Sessions” across the state to gain feedback from New Yorkers. Yet after skim-reading the 75-page “Assessment of the Potential Impact of Regulated Marijuana in New York State” (July 2018) commissioned by Governor Cuomo, it looks like legalization is a done deal unless there’s public outcry against it. There’s almost no need to read the entire document because as early as Page 5, the conclusion is: “The positive effects of an adult (21 and over) marijuana market in New York State outweigh the potential negative impacts.” The state can think of no better way to avoid disproportionate imprisonment of minorities and combat the opioid crisis than to drive people deeper into a destructive lifestyle and create new and improved drug addicts. I reject the notion that marijuana is a harmless substance. I base that on unpleasant personal experience. Only fake science steeped in politics and greed would challenge conventional wisdom and proven statistics in favor of dubious research. Instead, we are to focus on large tax revenues that will be used “for the public good,” jobs generated, and the nature of “good pot” as opposed to bad pot. The only argument I might have liked was the possible

decrease in the use of synthetic pot. Then it occurred to me that poverty-stricken minorities and addicts are unlikely to have the cash and access needed to purchase “regulated marijuana” so as to reap the benefits government pot pushers are trying to provide for them. As for those with serious mental illnesses who may be adversely affected, they will need to be “monitored,” the study says. The study also concedes that adolescents and young people who smoke marijuana may suffer adverse consequences, so they will be “under surveillance” by Public Health and Education Officials for the “onset and incidence of psychosis” as well as “effects on academic achievement.” THC is a psychoactive substance. It’s not “benign,” as the governor’s report suggests on Page 2, while mocking the unenlightened era of “Reefer Madness.” Legalized marijuana may be the wave of the future, but it’s not forward progress. It’s not a panacea for social justice or a breakthrough for modern medicine. It doesn’t protect our youth, and its truest purpose is not for the public good. The Regulated Marijuana Market is a dangerous cash cow, with an unproven track record. To quote my favorite fortune cookie: “Make sure that the medicine you take in a rash moment does not turn out to be worse than the malady.” LAURIE CLOCKSIN

Kavanaugh, Blasey, and the Senate circus Chilling? Horrifying? I don’t know: what’s your word for the Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearing last Thursday? And now, the FBI is investigating the sexual-assault charge against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Sometime soon, presumably, we’ll learn whether they found anything incriminating. Whatever they find, I can’t imagine it’ll be definitive. Kavanaugh won’t reverse course and say he didn’t do what Christine Blasey Ford says he did. There was only one witness to the alleged assault: Kavanaugh’s high-school friend Mark Judge. And odds are, Judge will repeat to the FBI what he’s already said: he doesn’t remember. Judge wrote a book, “Wasted: Tales of a Gen X Drunk,” in which he described his frequent bouts of heavy drinking as a high school student – so heavy that getting through the next day was, in his words, “an Olympic event.” It wouldn’t be surprising if he couldn’t remember what happened when he was that drunk. The FBI may find people who say they were at the party. But according to Blasey, no one else but Judge was in the room when Kavanaugh forced her onto a bed and held her down, grinding and groping. No one else saw Kavanaugh and Judge laughing, enjoying the spectacle. So it’ll still be Kavanaugh’s word against Blasey’s. And the majority of the members of the US Senate – including some who have said they found Blasey’s testimony “credible” – seem likely to confirm Kavanaugh. The result: Joining the Supreme Court will be a man who may have committed sexual assault as a teenager; who certainly did lie, exaggerate, and mislead in his testimony before the Judiciary Committee; and whose anger and stunning partisanship should disqualify him for that office. He will be there because, faced with an accusation by a woman, a denial by a man, and no clear proof, a majority of US Senators will side with the man. Maybe he did it. Maybe he didn’t. Since we don’t know, we’ll take his word.

Because they do not get it. Despite all of the stories in the news, despite the evidence of how sexual assault affects victims, despite scientific evidence of

Despite all of the stories in the news, a majority of Senators still don’t get it – and don’t intend to try to. trauma that stays with them for decades, the majority of US Senators do not get it. And judging from the words and actions of the Republican Senators sitting in that room on Thursday, they have no intention of trying to. Brett Kavanaugh was right about one thing last week. That hearing was a circus, a macabre, nightmarish circus, complete with whip-cracking lion tamers strutting and preening and showing who was master. The media photographs of a raging Kavanaugh captured it all. It was horrifying. A powerful Kavanaugh lashed out at people who dared deny him a Supreme Court seat: he who had been first in his class in school. And at the end of it, Republican Senators insisted that the committee proceed to a vote. We have a serious, often deadly cultural problem. A desire for power infects far too many boys, at an early age, and a good bit of our culture encourages it. Add to that the country’s widespread misogyny, and the acceptance of women’s role as vehicles for men’s sexual gratification, and you have the abuse of girls and women that now frequently dominates the news. And a majority of the members of the United States Senate seem likely to confirm Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court. That this is a partisan political issue, in this day and age, leaves me speechless.

RMSC names its new director

The Rochester Museum and Science Center has picked a Rochester-area native with deep experience in museum leadership for its new director. She is Hillary Olson, an Ogden native and a graduate of Brockport High School. Olson will succeed Kate Bennett, starting work in November. She is currently vice president of audience and community engagement at the Milwaukee Public Museum, an institution that, like the RMSC, focuses on natural and cultural history and operates a planetarium. Olson has also held positions at the Franklin Institute Science Museum in Philadelphia, the Long Island Children’s Museum, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, and the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles. In 2016 she had a fellowship in museum management at the Getty Leadership Institute. Since last March, when Bennett announced her intention to retire, the museum’s board of trustees has conducted an international search for her replacement. Bennett will continue to be associated with the RMSC, in fundraising efforts.

Skatepark workshop is Wednesday

The Roc City Skatepark faced years of delay, but now the project is now moving forward at a serious pace. The City of Rochester is holding a design workshop for the project from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Frederick Douglass R-Center, 999 South Avenue. The park will be located under the Douglass-Anthony bridge downtown and will be roughly 38,000 square feet. The city and skatepark advocates say the facility will be suitable for events and competitions. The city also wants the skatepark to function as an urban park space that will connect to the Genesee River waterfront and existing parks nearby, and that will “enhance the outdoor recreational experience for walkers, joggers, and cyclists,” it says in a press release. The project is part of the broader Roc the Riverway initiative. The city is partnering with Friends of Roc City Skatepark to develop the site. The Friends group recently announced that Stantec Consulting, which has specialists who have designed skateparks across the country, won the bid for final design of the Roc City Skatepark.

The sounds of justice

Charlene Sommers is starting a Justice Choir in Rochester. PHOTO BY JACOB WALSH

Charlene Sommers has been in choirs before, including college and touring choirs, as well as a stint with the Eastman Rochester Chorus. But Sommers is currently putting together a different kind of choral group, a Justice Choir. She wants to build a group of people who can go to protests or demonstrations and sing songs or chant chants that reinforce the message at hand. The choir will be “more about what the songs mean than about performing,” Sommers says. The idea is that songs may stick with people and burrow into their subconscious in a way spoken words may not, she says. Justice Choir is a grassroots movement that began in Minneapolis-St. Paul but now has chapters across the country, including one in Ithaca. Sommers says she was inspired to start a Justice Choir in Rochester after seeing posts from some of those groups. Justice Choirs aren’t rigid, rehearsal-intensive ensembles. They’re more like a loose collective; the national organization’s site

likens them to civic organizations. Choir members just need to be familiar with the music, Sommers says. She also says participants don’t have to be particularly good singers, and that some can even do things such as play drums. To that end, Justice Choirs from across the country have put together a free songbook as well as a YouTube playlist of some performances; both can be found at justicechoir.org/songbook. The repertoire draws on spirituals and traditional folk songs, but also includes songs by choir members. Anyone who’s interested in the choir or wants more information can contact Sommers at charlygirard9@gmail.com. The group’s next get-together is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, October 4, at Metro Justice’s space in The Hungerford, 1115 East Main Street; the organization has been helping the choir by providing space and promoting it. The Justice Choir’s first planned performance will be at Metro Justice’s Alternative Fair on November 30.

Keeping in mind that the tests are given to elementary and middle school students, the improvement jump they’ll need by the time they reach 9th grade is extremely high if they hope to graduate in four years.

EDUCATION | BY TIM LOUIS MACALUSO

Tests reveal a lot or nothing at all The results of last spring’s statewide testing for grades 3 to 8 in English and math were released last week, and there are multiple reasons to be concerned with the scores. On the upside, proficiency levels improved overall statewide in 2018, including in the Big Five districts: the state’s largest cities, including Rochester. (“Proficient” means students have mastered the basics in that subject.) More than 45 percent of the state’s students were proficient in English, compared to 39.8 percent a year ago. And 44.5 percent were proficient in math compared to 40.2 percent in 2017. But the Rochester school district, although it improved slightly, remains the lowest performing of the Big Five. Only 11.4 percent of Rochester’s students were proficient in English for grades 3 to 8, a slight improvement from 7.6 percent from a year ago. And 10.7 percent of Rochester’s students were proficient in math in grades 3 to 8, compared to 7.9 percent from a year ago. African-American and Latino students in Rochester still lag well behind their white peers in English. Only 8 percent of African-American students in grades 3 to 8 are proficient in English, compared to 9 percent of Latino students and 17 percent of white students. The results are almost identical in math.

But the more sobering picture of what’s happening in the Rochester school district can be seen in the test results of individual schools, some of which have been generally considered some of the district’s better performers. For instance, only 17 percent of students at School 58 were proficient in English and only 15 percent were proficient in English at School 46. In addition to the low proficiency rates, relatively few students scored at the top level, what the state would call “high achievers.” And the test results show that more than 50 percent of students in both School 58 and School 46 are performing at below or extremely below state standards. Keeping in mind that the tests are given to elementary and middle school students, the improvement jump they’ll need by the time they reach 9th grade is extremely high if they hope to graduate in four years. And the latest scores fuel speculation that more city schools are in danger of being added to the state’s list of receivership schools, those that are risk of being forced to close or reinvent themselves. Test scores are one of the tools State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia uses to gauge whether a school is improving quickly enough. The picture is different at Fairport’s elementary schools, where 37 percent of the

students are proficient in English and an additional 17 percent are high performing. It’s similar in Honeoye Falls, where 38 percent were proficient and another 22 percent were high performing. Both suburban schools have a predominantly white student body and the poverty rate is low. The debate continues, however, over how much emphasis parents, teachers, and school administrators should place on high stakes testing. Though fewer students opted out of tests this year, calls to eliminate

them continue. After Commissioner Elia touted the benefits of the tests in a recent newspaper letter to the editor, education writer Diane Ravitch railed against them. “The test scores are released long after the student has left his or her teacher and moved on to a different teacher,” Ravitch wrote in her blog. “Most of the questions are released, but the teacher never learns which questions individual students get right or wrong.” Since there is no diagnostic or instructional value, Ravitch says, what good are they?

GUN VIOLENCE | BY TIM LOUIS MACALUSO

Calls grow to stop shootings Last month, five people were shot in Rochester in three separate shootings in a matter of four hours. Two of them died. Two days later, there was another gunrelated homicide. There’s no single explanation for gun violence in Rochester, any more than there is in other cities. But the Reverend Lewis Stewart, president of United Christian Leadership Ministry, says we are dealing with a sickness of the human spirit, and its end stage is a disregard for life. Stewart is calling on religious leaders throughout Rochester to wage an all-out assault on gun violence. “In this awful environment of bloodshed,” Stewart said in an interview last week, “people tend to become numb, paralyzed by fear, or not know what to do to address the problem. Residents should not have to live in fear of being shot by emboldened criminals. This is not normal.” Stewart said he frequently hears from people who are afraid to leave their home. “One man said he’s so afraid that when he arrives home from work he shuts himself in his house,” Stewart said. “He fears what the night brings.” An elderly woman told Stewart that she places pillows against her windows and walls, hoping to stop stray bullets. City Councilmember Adam McFadden, like Stewart, has seen the effects of gun violence on family members and close friends. Something has happened to our culture and our values, Mc Fadden said last week. “Trauma is so prevalent and it’s causing so much pain that people don’t have a respect for life,” McFadden said. “That is the bigger issue. It’s bigger than where the guns come from, and it’s bigger than coming up with new legislation.” McFadden said someone emailed him a video of a recent street fight and shooting, which he turned over to police. What was more disturbing than watching the young male shooter, he said, was watching the crowd around him. It was as if they were watching entertainment. And they were encouraging the fight. “No one tried to stop it,” McFadden said. But, he said, he’s not surprised that violence has become normalized for some people. “If I’m exposed to pain, hunger at night, a parent strung out on drugs: all these things matter,” McFadden said. 6 CITY

Rochester does not have an inordinately

high rate of gun-related homicides. At the moment, that distinction is held by cities like Baltimore and St. Louis. And homicides in Rochester, as in other cities, are highly correlated to areas with high concentrations of poverty, said John Klofas, professor of criminal justice at the Rochester Institute of Technology. In addition, he said: “We know that about 80 percent of homicides are a result of shootings, because guns are so lethal. And most shootings involve identifiable interpersonal disputes that go on for some time, arguments that spin out of control.” Rochester police have found that some disputes can result in 16 to 18 shootings over time, he said. From January 1 through September 23 of this year, there were 115 shootings, 15 of them fatal. Though homicides of all types have declined, from a high of 50 in 2007 to 29 in 2017, statistics don’t tell the whole story, says Lentory Johnson.

Johnson’s grandchildren are still traumatized three years after the loss of their father, she says. Her son, Johnny “JR” Johnson, was one of three people killed on August 19, 2015, at the Boys and Girls Club after a basketball game. “He was a hands-on daddy to his children,” Johnson said in a recent interview. “He went with them to the talent shows. He took them to the zoo. But he won’t be there when they graduate. He won’t give away his daughter if and when she decides to marry.” Whenever a family experiences the loss of a loved one, it’s painful, and it’s hard on survivors, Johnson said. But it’s especially difficult for families when the death is a result of gun violence, she said, because it’s unnatural. And it has a far-reaching, generational impact. The victim’s family and children experience a long-term loss, and so does the family of the person who commits the murder, Johnson said. One of their loved ones is likely to be taken away, too, and incarcerated. It is a “horror show,” she said.

“My child wasn’t sick,” Johnson said. “My child wasn’t in a car accident. This is a hurt that you don’t want someone else to ever feel.” Since her son’s death, Johnson has been volunteering at community centers and other organizations, where she often talks with children about what is happening in their lives. “I’ll go into a room full of 6-year-olds, and I’ll ask, ‘How many of you know what the sound of a gunshot is like when you hear it?’” she said. “Almost all of the hands go up. ‘How many of you know someone who has been shot?’ The majority of them will raise their hand. “That is a tragedy,” Johnson said, “because there is rage there.” Late last year, Johnson began working on “The Mothers’ Quilt,” a 12-foot by 6-foot quilt with more than two dozen panels containing images of gun-violence victims. Most of the victims are from the Rochester area, and nearly all of them are young men of color. Johnson came up with the idea of the quilt as a way to help the victims’ mothers grieve and to increase awareness about gun violence in urban communities, where most

of the homicides and shooters are young men of color. A lot of media attention is given to mass shootings in suburban schools and on college campuses that often lasts for days, Johnson said. The coverage shows people are shocked in white communities. They can’t believe it happened in their neighborhood or school because it happens infrequently, she said. But media doesn’t give the same type of attention to gun-related homicides that are happening in urban neighborhoods nearly every day, she said. And, she said, very few people in communities of color don’t believe the homicides have happened, she said. While there is a consensus about the

seriousness of gun violence and the suffering it’s causing, there’s less clarity about what to do to stop it. Johnson says state and federal politicians have failed to do anything meaningful to stop gun violence, and she favors more legislation. And, Councilmember McFadden adds, more legislation won’t stop violence unless people’s values also change. We need to identify people who need help before they hurt people, he says. Some people have questioned what religious leaders can actually accomplish. It’s not the first time they’ve tried to address gun violence, critics say. That doesn’t deter Lewis Stewart. He plans to invite all of the city’s religious leaders to a meeting sometime in the next two months where they can discuss strategies and come up with a coordinated plan, he said. “It’s OK to doubt,” Stewart said. “We have been paralyzed by this pandemic for decades, so I understand the skeptics. But as clergy, we have a lot of power.” Politicians, business, and community leaders will at least listen to religious leaders’ recommendations, Stewart said. Clergy have more access to policy makers than most people, he said. County legislators need to pass safe gun storage legislation because so many guns are stolen, he said. He would like to see clergy mobilize the residents in the neighborhoods near their churches to form block associations, make their churches and mosques centers for job training and individual counseling, and encourage residents to call the police and report crimes as they occur. “I know that some people compare this to putting your finger in the dike to try and stop the flood, but I have faith,” Stewart said.

eyond visiting the resting places of family and friends, spending time near graves might seem like the domain of moody teens or vandals. But in many ways, cemeteries are ideal places to spend a peaceful morning or afternoon, alone with your thoughts while you’re jogging or in the company of friends. There’s so much wide open space in the US that we tend to keep parks and burial grounds separate, unlike smaller, older countries where traditionally, the living celebrate being alive in proximity to the remains of the dead. Renée Heininger and Rebecca Rafferty describe their ramble through four of Rochester’s park-like cemeteries.

Located across the road from Powers Farm Market, the 170 acres offering spaces for quiet reflection, including a gazebo and trails that are lined with benches and stones, each with the names of the dead on metal plaques. The park is a certified member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program, and its grounds are peppered with blue bird and bat roosting boxes, and meadows that also serve as a green burial ground. A creek runs through the woodsy parts of the landscape, and the overall vibe feels less like being in a cemetery than out in a forest trail enjoying nature (there are more than 80 acres of undeveloped forest and meadow land on site).

f you’re not paying attention, you could temporarily lose your bearings in the hilly, labyrinth-like ramble that is Mount Hope Cemetery. Though its acreage doesn’t quite reach 200, the place feels massive, given the undulating terrain and grand architecture of the crematorium and various mausoleums that pepper the landscape. Founded in 1838, Mount Hope has graves of people who were born in the 18th century, though many of the engraved names and dates are no longer legible on weatherworn, slate-thin headstones. On our visit, we made a game of finding a birth year in the 1700s that was still legible.

It’s fairly well known that Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass are interned at Mount Hope, but you can take one of many guided tours throughout the year that provide stories of more people buried there, as well as fascinating bits of Rochester history. There are stretches of flat land as you get closer to College Town, but the beauty of Mt. Hope is the unique trek offered by the central, sylvan part of the place. There’s a feeling of tenuous disorder to the leaning and broken headstones on hilltops, amid elephantine beech tree roots (the tree trunks often scarred with carved lovers’ names), or divided into family plots by wrought iron, stone, or chain-link borders.

Catholic burial ground, the 332 acres of Holy Sepulchre Cemetery are interspersed with gardens and wide lanes lined by tall, evenly spaced trees. At the entrance are three imposing brutalist crosses rising from the center of a flower bed, and a gilded replica of Michelangelo’s “Pietà” sculpture. Lots of angelic statuary and massive old pines (and more than 100 other types of trees) stand sentinel. 12 CITY OCTOBER 3 - 9, 2018

The even terrain and walking lanes would make Holy Sepulchre an ideal place for a winter walk, your footsteps dampened and sounds from the street muffled by snowfall. Built in 1871, Holy Sepulchre holds the remains of nearly 300,000 people, including well-known Rochesterians such as Al Sigl, silent film star Louise Brooks, and Bishop Bernard John McQuaid.

uilt in 1892, Riverside Cemetery is a relatively flat 123 acres of land that borders the west bank of the Genesee River, but don’t get excited about a riverview. There are plenty of beautiful vistas, including thick copses of dark pines and knotty deciduous trees (the grounds double as a natural arboretum) and a pond with a fountain and dense clusters of water lilies. We anticipated being able to walk along the river, but there’s a hilly edge you probably shouldn’t get too close to, and the view of the river is obscured by trees. If you stroll around the pond, look out for angry geese and their droppings, which are slippery and just unpleasant. But you might also spy white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and other species of birds. Located near the entrance of the grounds is the Chapel of Peace mausoleum, which is filled with light during the daytime by skylights, and can accommodate up to 70 people. Among the notables buried at Riverside are organized crime figure Giuseppe Aiello and William Joseph Beldue, inventor of the eyelash curler.

There’s a new culinary fungi game in town focused on serving nutritional, medicinal, and environmental interests. That emergent company, Leep Foods, is based in a 5,000 square foot warehouse across the Genesee River from Rochester Institute of Technology, and it supplies its products to area restaurants and Wegmans stores. It currently specializes in two kinds of mushrooms: the Coral Maitake, which is commonly known as “hen of the woods” for its textural resemblance to chicken meat, and the pearlescent-skinned Blue Oyster. In October, Leep Foods is collaborating with three different restaurants to present mushroom-centered dining experiences. The

events aim to educate the public about the company and the benefits of mushrooms as delicious, organic superfoods. “There’s a growing number of people who are interested in mycology, who are thinking about the mushroom kingdom and what it has to offer,” says George Zheng, Leep Foods’ cofounder and chief operating officer. Zheng forages far and wide for mushrooms, and has taken trips as far as the Amazon Rainforest to discover the diversity of species. For example, on a trip to Columbia his group found a Shitake that had this strong aroma of garlic, he says. “There’s still a lot that we don’t know about this kingdom,” he says. Leep Foods is engaged in what Zheng calls high-tech farming. The warehouse functions

essentially as an indoor farm and laboratory where the team keeps a careful temperature, light, and humidity balance at different stages of growing. They experiment with different hardwood substrates (sawdust) that are inoculated with the fungi spores, which allows them to tinker with the flavor outcome. “It’s labor-intensive, it’s early mornings, late nights, long weekends,” Zheng says. “Mushrooms don’t really wait for anybody; when they’re ready, they’re ready.” The Leep Foods team works with biologists to pursue evidence-based health and nutritional benefits of mushrooms on the molecular level, an approach that’s similar to that of the growing cannabidiol (CBD) industry. Mushrooms are rich in antioxidants, beta glucans, and minerals, Zheng says.

Zheng has an engineering degree from RIT, but he stumbled into his current work after becoming intrigued by the concept of using undervalued waste streams to grow medicinal mushrooms. He and Chris Carter — with whom he co-founded Leep Foods — started Empire Medicinals with RIT professor Carl Lundgren and Sweetwater Energy founder Jerry Horton. (Sweetwater produces sugars and lignin fiber from non-food plant materials). “Sweetwater had a waste stream problem — their lignin wasn’t being utilized, and we tried to do something about that,” Zheng says. “What intrigued me, as an engineer, was looking at the mushroom industry not from a purely scientific perspective but from a scaling perspective. Science for the sake of science is important, but for me it’s how do you take the latest in science and technology and benefit and build a better world? Mushrooms kept calling to me.” Both of Zheng’s parents are doctors, “trained in a different modality of medicine in China” he says. And they influenced and supported his interest in the potential of the food-as-medicine trend, and also standardizing herbal medicine. “With herbal medicine, there’s quite a bit of pseudo-science, and the challenge is, how do you modernize it?” Zheng says. “But the fact that it’s been passed down through centuries and hasn’t been thrown out, that means there’s a lot of value there. So there’s a translational challenge: how do you take Western scientific tools to try to understand the molecular functioning of why certain herbal medicines are good?” The Empire Medicinals team decided it was getting ahead of itself with the goals to standardize herbal medicine. But it did realize that it could help push the American mushroom industry forward, and Leep Foods was born. Zheng says he thinks the future of medicine is “targeting unmet clinical needs not just with one compound and one target, but with polypharmacy,” he says. “The time is right to be thinking about the future of complex herbal medicine, but Leep Foods is not there yet. We realize there is an important job to be done in first familiarizing Americans with more exotic natural products, almost Trojan-horsing in health benefits because it’s really delicious. That’s really the first step.” The first October Mushroom Takeover event happens on Monday, October 15, at Bar Bantam, with following events at The Owl House, and Han Noodle in later weeks. cranking out anthems for a long time. It’s crazy to think that the group’s cathartic, classic 90’s album “Clumsy” came out over 20 years ago. This Thursday at Anthology, OLP will bring its arenaready sound, but it’s not just a nostalgia trip. You can’t talk about Infrared Radiation Orchestra without mentioning Kim Draheim’s encyclopedic knowledge of roots guitar and his precise sonic application of all that know-how. Draheim is a wizard, but he ain’t a spotlight hog. On the band’s new album, “Sumus Quod Sumus,” Draheim moves over here and there and lets vibrant vocalist H. Elizabeth Alcott take over. The sound is full, thanks in large part to the bare-bones rock ‘n’ roll of the original compositions. There’s no fluff. This allows for the band to stretch its legs throughout, and for Draheim to wrap his fingers around the neck of his Mosrite guitar and squeeeeeeze. Infrared Radiation Orchestra will play a CD release show, free of charge, on Thursday, October 4, 6 p.m. at Record Archive, 33 1/3 Rockwood Street. — BY FRANK DE BLASE

The Beaumonts kick off “Laterna Blu” with a quasi-bossa nova backbeat, reminiscent of Paul Weller’s postmodern lounge outfit The Style Council. But it isn’t a ploy to simply reel the listener into the band’s comfort zone, because they do it again with the second track...and the third. The Beaumonts’ frontman Steve Pizzuto also holds down the bottom end in the Ren and Stimpy-meets-Madness band that is 5Head. But don’t expect the silliness and the augmented ska. “Laterna Blu” is the twilight between melancholy and downright maudlin. It is layered, lovely, and lush, with the hint of inclemency looming just overhead. The album was mixed by four-time Neko Case producer Darryl Neudorf, who adheres well to the ethereal undertones and mood. By the way, do I hear a 1966 Bassman in there?

Music As if this weren’t enough, Snyder is about to begin a month-long residency at Three Heads Brewing. Throughout the month of October, Snyder will be joined by a rotating cast of musicians to perform an entirely new set of material from week to week. The residency starts with a Velvet Underground tribute on October 4 and ends with what Snyder describes as perhaps “the most ambitious thing I’ve ever done, but potentially the best night of my life” — a full performance of “The White Album” by The Beatles on October 25. In an email interview, Snyder talked about his seemingly endless projects and how he juggles them all. An edited transcript of the interview follows. CITY: You’re based out of Rochester, but I know that you have a lot of ties to Brooklyn, especially with some members of Maybird currently living there. How does it work long-distance? Sam Snyder: We don’t get to work quite

as much as we would like to together, but fortunately we are hyper-productive when we are together. The little breaks we have here and there turn into really good opportunities for me to finish projects. You also have been doing some producing for some Rochester artists. How does playing the role of producer vary from playing in your different projects?

I’m fortunate to oftentimes be able to be trusted with other people’s art. I try to pick everyone’s brains for the music they like to listen to and play off those influences, mixed with what I think is cool. “Overhand Sam” Snyder has a busy October of music ahead. PHOTO BY TEAGAN WEST

[ INTERVIEW ] BY KATIE PRESTON

Sam Snyder — commonly known as “Overhand Sam,” for his unorthodox guitar-playing style — is on a roll right now: fronting his own band Overhand Sam (OHS) and working on the forthcoming record “Bad Weapons”; being an active member of the New York City-based band, Maybird, which is now signed to Columbia Records; playing guitar in Rochester’s Anamon; and serving as sound engineer and producer of a few albums put out by local bands.

So for your residency, you chose to do a couple of tributes, with one night devoted to The Velvet Underground. How did you land on that?

The Velvet Underground is one is of my favorite bands. I just always really liked the vibe of all those songs. They could define all types of people, and they represented being cool and the heyday of rock and roll. It felt like a no-brainer to do a bunch of their tunes. And the band had done that before where we, unannounced, played a whole set of Velvet Underground covers instead of doing a “normal” set. And you’ll be covering “The White Album” by The Beatles.

“The White Album” is one of those records that has always been there for me. My mom made me a mixtape with “Rocky Raccoon” on it when

BLUES

Big Blue House. Little Theatre Café, 240 East Ave. 258-0400. 7-9 p.m.

I was a kid, and I would listen to that tape a lot. That record has had a really huge impact on the sound I wanted my own records to have. It really feels like two records — one from Paul and one from John, with a few George tunes and Ringo’s number — all smashed together in this way that feels so satisfying. Does playing cover shows fill a different hole for you than playing your original music does?

During my residency, I sort of left out my solo stuff. Not for any particular reason. It was kind of an accident, and I ran out of weeks. I just figured, “Do something different and special that we’ll only do this one time.” My band will be the one performing “The White Album,” featuring some of my best friends. I just want every set of mine for the rest of time to be memorable for the crowd. My last solo show I made up a song on the fly with audience participation, and it was pretty good. What’s next for you?

Anamon will be out of town for a week promoting their new record, and I’ll be with them playing guitar. I recorded and played on Anamon’s “Purple, Green, and Yellow,” which just came out. It’s gotten some blog buzz and it’s pressed to vinyl, which is always cool and exciting. Besides that, I would really like to have the rest of my next solo record “Bad Weapons” out, so I’ll be maybe spending some time at home with Benton [Sillick] and Dennis [Mariano] on that. Maybird’s first full-length “Things I Remember From Earth,” is coming out soon, too. You’ll have to follow me on Instagram to know where I’m playing, though. I’m pretty bad at the promoting thing. You can follow Sam Snyder on Instagram here: @overhandsam. An extended version of this interview can be found at rochestercitynewspaper.com.

AVANT-JAZZ | KEN THOMSON SEXTET

As a member of groups like the contemporary classical Bang on a Can All-Stars, punky jazz upstart Gutbucket, and experimental jazz outfit Slow/Fast, Ken Thomson has been ignoring genre labels for years. Relentlessly creative and always musically curious, the clarinetist-sax player will bring his incomparable sound to Bop Shop Records this Friday, in support of his freshly released album “Sextet.” With Thomson’s quintessentially restless energy, the album places his original compositions alongside Ligeti’s “Passacaglia Ungherese.” Fittingly, Thomson will be joined live by his sextet: tenor saxophonist Anna Webber, Nick Finzer on trombone, trumpeter Russ Johnson, Adam Armstrong on bass, and Daniel Dor playing the drums. If you like your jazz lively and eccentric, Thomson’s your man. The Ken Thomson Sextet will perform on Friday, October 5, 8 p.m. at Bop Shop Records, 1460 Monroe Avenue. $15-$20. 271-3354. bopshop.com; ktonline.net. — BY DANIEL J. KUSHNER CLASSICAL

[ PREVIEW ] BY REBECCA RAFFERTY

Rachel DeGuzman’s “At the Crossroads: Activating the Intersection of Art and Justice” initiative hits its one year anniversary this week with “Black and Disabled: A Long Table Conversation and Installation.” The program, which DeGuzman describes as “an 24 CITY OCTOBER 3 - 9, 2018

artistic interrogation of the intersection of race, gender, and disability,” will take place on Sunday, October 7, and will start off with a series of engaging provocations for the Long Table Conversation that follows. In planning this event DeGuzman worked closely with disability rights activist Luticha Doucette, who is an innovation researcher for

the City of Rochester. DeGuzman reached out to Doucette after reading her opinion essay for the New York Times titled “If You’re in a Wheel Chair, Segregation Lives,” in which Doucette discussed the intersection of her experiences as a woman of color and a person of restricted movement in an ableist world. “As a black woman with incomplete quadriplegia and chronic pain, and as a fulltime manual wheelchair user, my own ability to move freely is frequently restricted,” she writes. “Too often, both the lack of accessibility in public spaces and the ingrained ableism of many nondisabled people bars my way.” In the piece, Doucette explains the indignity of having strangers talk past her — about her — to her companion as though they were her caretaker. And she likens her experiences with inaccessible spaces to instances when people of color were forced to use out-of-the-way entrances: “As a black woman I am keenly aware of the irony of being ushered through back ways, sketchy hallways, side entrances and kitchens to enter restaurants, bars and other establishments.” This event’s provocations include “I’m not your inspiration, thank you very much,” a 2014 TED talk by Stella Young; an excerpt from a video on the Black Panther Party’s involvement in the 1977 Section 504 decision, sourced from the Paul Longmore Institute on Disability Collection; “Overcoming Ableism: What You Don’t Know as an Able Bodied Person,” a 2015 TEDxUCIrvine talk by Naty Rico; “Casual Ableist Language,” a video by Annie Elainey; “Police Shot Unarmed Black Man with Hands Up,” a recording that was shown on ABC News; and Comedy Central’s “Drunk History: Judy Heumann Fights for People with Disabilities.” During the Long Table Conversation portion of the event, Doucette and DeGuzman will be joined at the table with others, including Jeiri Flores, Advocacy Discipline Coordinator for Flower City AmeriCorps; Melanie Funchess, Director of Community Engagement at Mental Health Association; Shannon Henderson, Youth Advocate at Hillside Work Scholarship Connection; and Raleigh, North Carolina-based artist and accessibility advocate Clara K. Johnson. “Working with Luticha on this event has caused me to interrogate my own ableism and complicates my understanding of intersectionality and social justice,” DeGuzman says, adding that Doucette explained that she can’t visit the homes of most people she meets with autonomy and without risk of incurring pain and indignity. “It shook me to the core. This is not just about accessibility in public spaces or for people we know, love, and then make accommodations for. Ableism is everywhere.”

LECTURE | ‘THE ROLE OF HAUDENOSAUNEE WOMEN AND SUFFRAGE’

While the current US administration wages war on women, organizers at the 1816 Farmington Quaker Meetinghouse look back at the influence Indigenous women had on the American women’s pursuit of equality. This week the programming continues with a lecture, “The Role of Haudenosaunee Women and Suffrage,” with Jeanne Shanandoah (Eel Clan, Onondaga Nation) and historian Sally Roesch Wagner. The talk is held in conjunction with Ganondagan’s Seneca Art & Culture Center’s ongoing exhibit, “Hodinöhsö:ni’ Women: From the Time of Creation.” “The Role of Haudenosaunee Women and Suffrage” takes place on Sunday, October 7, 2 to 4 p.m. at Sonnenberg Gardens, 151 Charlotte Street, Cananadaigua. ART | ‘THE ENIGMATIC IMAGINATION OF JOHN KASTNER’

Many of Rochester-based artist John Kastner’s mixed media illustrations and paintings are Bosch-esque hellscapes jampacked with clever commentary on this political, social, and environmental mess we’re in. In recent years Kastner began incorporating dimensional elements to his complex creations, adding bits of plastic and other detritus he’s collected from the sidewalks and streets while out walking. This month he’ll celebrate 40 years as a teacher at the Memorial Art Gallery’s Creative Workshop with an exhibition of his new work as well as old favorites, small prints, drawings, and samples of commercial illustration. “The Enigmatic Imagination of John Kaster” is on view through October 31 at the MAG’s Lucy Burne Gallery (in the lower level of the Cutler Union building), 500 University Avenue. An opening reception will take place Thursday, October 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Thursdays until 9 p.m. Admission is $6$15 (half price Thursdays after 5 p.m.; free to members, UR students, faculty and staff, and kids under age 5). 276-8900; mag.rochester.edu. — BY REBECCA RAFFERTY

MULTIMEDIA | DANI & SHEILAH RESTACK

MUSEUM | ‘SOUNDSENSE’

Visual Studies Workshop’s current experimental film series continues this week with “Strangely Ordinary This Devotion and Shameless Light: A Multimedia performance by Sheilah & Dani Restack.” The Ohio-based duo Sheilah Wilson and Dani Leventhal will present a multimedia performance, “Shameless Light,” which includes a participatory reading of lesbian love letters. The performance will be followed by a screening of “Strongely Ordinary This Devotion,” a single-channel video that was featured in the 2017 Whitney Biennial.

A new exhibit at Rochester Museum & Science Center will focus on how the phenomenon of sound helps us make sense of the world around us, and how we use it to communicate or for entertainment. The interactive elements of “SoundSense” help visitors explore the physical nature of sound, how we sense it, how different sounds are created, and the emotional experience that is music.

The event takes place Saturday, October 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. at VSW’s Auditorium, 31 Prince Street. Admission is $5, free to VSW members. 442-8676; vsw.org. — BY REBECCA RAFFERTY

Bridging borders [ PREVIEW ] BY ADAM LUBITOW

The Witness Palestine Film Festival MONDAY, OCTOBER 8, THROUGH MONDAY, OCTOBER 29 WITNESSPALESTINEROCHESTER.ORG

The Palestine-Israel conflict has been a fact of life for so long that it’s easy for those of us in America to let it fade into the background as a seemingly permanent, often violent ideological schism that has always and will always be there. But that’s a dangerous mindset, one that requires that we ignore the people forced to go about their lives as that battle rages around them.

Since 2012, the Witness Palestine Film Festival has sought to examine the conflict from a human rights perspective, screening films that center the point of view of everyday citizens in the region and illustrate the realities on the ground in both Israel and occupied Palestinian territories. Beginning Monday, October 8, the annual festival will present a series of lectures, film screenings, and events over the course of the coming month. This year’s lineup centers on the theme of “sumud,” the Arabic word for “steadfastness,” reflecting the perseverance of the Palestinian people. “Palestinians have lived under oppression for about a hundred years,” says Jim Tiefenthal, Co-Producer of the festival.

“Thus ‘sumud’ is a fitting way to honor those who have remained true to their cause for so long.” Tiefenthal says that while he hopes people are entertained by the films being screened, he also hopes that Witness Palestine events will open their eyes to think more critically about the issues and our own government’s actions in the region. “The US government has long been an uneven broker of a just peace,” he says. “The current administration is squeezing Palestinians in favor of the Israeli government, when it moved the US embassy to Jerusalem, dropped funding to the UN agency that runs schools for Palestinian refugees, and withdrew aid to hospitals serving Palestinian patients.” The centerpiece of the festival is a keynote lecture, “Justice in the US and

Palestine,” which will be delivered by attorney and activist Noura Erakat and human-rights lawyer Danielle Ponder on Sunday, October 14, 2 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word. Admission to that event is free. Each program at the festival will be followed by a panel discussion. A full schedule of events and ticket information can be found at witnesspalestinerochester.org. The first screening will be “Constructing the Terrorist Threat,” a video lecture by professor and media commentator Deepa Kumar that takes a deep look into terrorism and Islamophobia. Aided by a plethora of clips and archival images, Kumar outlines the social processes have been working to create the automatic association between Muslim people and terrorism, a practice that has been used by governments looking to cultivate fear and justify their own anti-democratic agendas. (Monday, October 8, 6:30 p.m., St. John Fisher College) “Naila and the Uprising” is a stirring documentary that combines striking animation with archival footage to tell the story of activist Naila Ayesh and the crucial role Palestinian women played in the First Intifada, the uprising against Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip beginning in the late-80’s. (Sunday, October 21, 2 p.m., Little Theatre) Directed by Elika Rezaee and Marjorie Wright, the often inspiring documentary “Jews Step Forward” highlights the voices of 24 voices within the American Jewish community who choose to speak out against the injustice faced by the Palestinian people. (Monday, October 22, 6:45 p.m., Little Theatre) Other films being screened throughout the festival include “The Stones Cry Out” on October 28, examining the plight of Christian Palestinians, as well as the documentary “Veterans for Peace in Palestine” on October 29. Preceding each feature film will be the toetapping and eye-opening music video “I Was Living Here,” from local rock band The Mighty High and Dry.

Family Values

Laurence Mitchell, 53, gets this week's Most Helpful Dad award for graciously driving his 15-year-old son and the son's girlfriend, also 15, to a Port St. Lucie, Florida, park on Sept. 6 so they could "do their thang," as Mitchell described it. The Smoking Gun reported that when Port St. Lucie police officer Clayton Baldwin approached Mitchell's car around 11:30 p.m., after the park had closed, Mitchell told him the kids "aren't out there stealing, they are just having sex. They could be out there doing worse." When the teenagers returned from the nearby soccer field, Mitchell's son told the officer they were "just smokin' and f---in'." Mitchell was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a misdemeanor.

Compelling Explanations

-- While shopping at a Peoria, Illinois, Walmart on Sept. 20, an unnamed 30-year-old woman filled her cart but also added a few items to her backpack: leggings, pencils, a quart of oil and a "Jesus Calling" Bible. After she paid for only the items in her cart, a loss prevention officer stopped her before she left the store. Peoria police were summoned,

reported the Peoria Journal Star, and the woman explained to them she was hoping the Bible could help her spiritually: "(She) told me that it sounds strange, but she was trying to be more Christian," an officer reported. She was charged with misdemeanor theft. -- After trying repeatedly on Sept. 12 to pull over a Toyota Prius driving with expired tags on I-5 near Marysville, Washington, a Washington State Patrol officer finally caught up to the car at an intersection and verbally instructed the unnamed 42-year-old woman driver to pull over, reported the Everett Daily Herald. "I will not. I drive a Prius," was the woman's reply. The officer then asked her to step out of the vehicle, which she also refused to do, so he forced her out. "I will own your bank account," she told him. "I will own your house." When he asked her name, she responded, "None of your business." Finally, she was arrested for failing to obey instructions, failing to identify herself and obstruction.

No Good Deed

Tammie Hedges of Goldsboro, North Carolina, founded the nonprofit Crazy's Claws N Paws in 2013 to help low-income families with vet bills and pet supplies, so it was natural for her to take in 27 animals

displaced by Hurricane Florence in September. Hedges treated many of the animals, found in the streets or surrendered by fleeing residents, with antibiotics and painkillers for fleas, cuts and other ailments. For that, The Washington Post reported, she was arrested on Sept. 21 for practicing veterinary medicine without a license, after an official from Wayne County Animal Services visited the warehouse where the animals were housed. Kathie Davidson, a volunteer with Claws N Paws, said: "If she hadn't done what she did, then they'll be charging her with animal neglect and cruelty. What was she supposed to do?" Hedges was released on bond, and the charges were later dropped.
