Pei left mark on Rochester
I.M. Pei, one of the world’s most iconic and prolific architects, has died at the age of 102. Most admired for his remarkable transformation of the Louvre in Paris and the Postmodern grandeur that is the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, Pei also left his fingerprint of genius on the Flower City. In 1976, just after he completed the John Hancock Tower in Boston – and right before he finished the John F. Kennedy Library, also in Boston – he designed the Wilson Commons building at the University of Rochester. As a central location for campus life, Wilson Commons provides space for gatherings, performances, lectures, exhibits, leisure, play, and eating. Among its many impressive features, the six-story glass atrium, which is adorned with flags representing the country of origin of that year’s student body, make it a public environment that models democratic participation, global unity, and scientific inquiry. The geometric design of the building’s windows, for instance, exemplifies the virtues 2 CITY

of inquisitiveness and honesty that Pei strived for in all of his structures. Poetically speaking, the building itself is the torch but the people gathered within its walls are the torch igniters and torchbearers. As Pei once wrote: “The essence of architecture is form and space, and light is the essential element to the key to architectural design, probably more important than anything. Technology and materials are secondary.” Wilson Commons, in its own intimate scale, brings together form, space, and light in a way that is both aesthetically compelling and functional to the everyday affairs of an academic community.
It may not be considered by experts to be a Pei masterpiece, but it is a building imagined and constricted by a true master nonetheless. In 1983, Pei won the Pritzker Prize, sometimes called the Nobel Prize of architecture. Simply put, he was not just a great architect, he was one of the greatest architects of all time. Any Rochesterian who cares about beauty and greatness will be humbled that he found an opportunity to share his vision with us. GEORGE CASSIDY PAYNE

In a letter titled “Questions from the loss of Hart’s,” a reader asks: “Is the urban experience really returning to Rochester?” I think the question encapsulates what’s wrong with attempts to “revitalize” Rochester. Those of us who just live here are always having “the urban experience.” It’s what happens when you live in a city. But that’s not what the letter writer means, is it? Here, the “urban experience” is sort of an amusement park ride to entice affluent suburbanites into the city: Walkable! Theatah! Upscale retail! Fine dining! No crime! In reality, the “urban experience” in Rochester is this: • Our public transportation sucks. There’s no polite way to say it. If you don’t have a car and you live in Rochester, you know this. • Most of Rochester is a food desert. Low-income residents, for the most part, do not have access to affordable healthy food. • We are third in the nation in child poverty; 56 percent of Rochester’s kids live in poverty. Rochester’s “revitalization” efforts, however, all seem to be for someone else. I assume the thinking is that an influx of affluent residents will increase the tax base, but I would like to see research that supports that expectation. There seems to be an awful lot of luxury housing being built in the city. Have we done the research to determine that there’s enough market? The letter-writer wonders why Hart’s failed: “Were their demographic estimates premature? Were
the ‘specialty’ intentions over-reaching? Or was it the almost complete absence (to this day) of residential sidewalk traffic?” The answers are “yes, yes, and yes.” When the closing of Hart’s was announced, my Facebook feed was full of people taking a tone of consternation towards “Rochester” for failing to support a business that the owner had worked so hard at. Apparently I’m to blame because I didn’t want to spend a quarter of my paycheck on a sandwich. I was informed that Hart’s was an attempt to make Rochester a better place to live, and my mind couldn’t help but go to that boring litany: food deserts, poverty, lousy public transportation.... But these are things that affect people IN the city, and we’re trying to get people to COME to the city! It’s hard to miss the implication that we regular city folk who don’t make much… don’t matter much. The letter writer asks: “Which comes first, the cart or the horse?” Well, it usually works better if you put the horse first. Which means maybe we should focus our efforts on improving the “urban experience” for those of us who live here, and worry about attracting the richies at a later date, if at all. I bet they’ll be more eager to come to a city full of happy, healthy people. But if not, they can stay where they are. Then everyone will be happy! TOM CLIFFORD, ROCHESTER

CITY and WXXI: joining for enhanced coverage Norm Silverstein, the president of WXXI, is chair of Rochester Area Media Partners, owner CITY Newspaper and CITY digital media. Mary Anna Towler’s Urban Journal will return next week.
To CITY Newspaper readers: As president of WXXI, I try to keep in touch with our friends in the community with a monthly letter about what’s happening at the station, especially significant programming and special events. This month, I focused on our acquisition of CITY Newspaper, and I’m pleased to share that letter with our CITY readers. Last December, WXXI announced that we had signed a letter of intent to acquire CITY Newspaper and its digital platforms. I am proud to report that on May 1, the acquisition was completed and we are excited to have the opportunity to ensure CITY’s long-term success in our community. This merger will help WXXI and CITY better serve our community through enhanced coverage of arts and culture, education, neighborhoods, and events. As one of our trustees said, “It’s an example of what a modern media organization should be doing.” WXXI was approached by Mary Anna and Bill Towler, co-founders and co-publishers of CITY, regarding their desire to preserve the service of the paper beyond their eventual retirement. Independent local journalism continues to be important to the vibrancy of communities nationwide, and Rochester is no exception. We believe this acquisition will preserve and expand the quality and depth of local reporting and prioritize coverage of the arts and culture in the greater Rochester area. We can envision a strong brand extension for both organizations and a sustainable future for the paper with our merged community service. So what can you expect to see and hear from this acquisition? • More local long-form news coverage with daily local talk, a state government reporter, and several enterprise and investigative staff reporters – all going after stories that make a difference in the community. • Digital content that expands reach and engagement by local talent through creative original programming and social media. • Strengthened curated entertainment experiences. Lifestyle reporting and events calendars that drive arts discovery and appreciation. • Special film screenings at the Little Theatre; Connections with Evan Dawson; CITY’s Best of Rochester, Burger Week, and other favorite events, concerts, music festivals;

Warren unveils new budget Mayor Lovely Warren’s budget proposal for the next fiscal year, which she released Friday morning, calls for a small spending increase over this year and a small increase in taxes and fees for the typical homeowner. The city had been facing a $38 million gap, which Warren said she solved with reduced expenses and additional revenue from taxes, fees, and other sources. The tax increase for homeowners is the result of a state formula that determines which portion of the city’s tax levy is paid by homeowners and which is paid by businesses. Next year, owners of some business properties will see a tax decrease. The overall property tax levy – the total collected – remains flat. City Council will vote on Warren’s budget and on the Rochester school district’s budget on June 18, and it will hold hearings on June 5, 10, and 12. Warren’s proposed $552 million budget includes $700,000 to fund a new Police Accountability Board, which City Council was expected to approve this week. While Warren

has opposed Council’s legislation, she included funding for it in her budget because, she said, “we want the budget to accurately reflect what we plan on doing.” The budget also includes money for: • Converting the former soccer stadium into a youth sports complex; • Increased support for library programs that help immigrants adjust to living in the United States; • Fifty new body-worn cameras for police officers; • La Marketa and ROC the Riverway; • Expanded service hours for the Pathways to Peace Outreach Program in city neighborhoods; • State-mandated funding for the Rochester school district; • Installation of new parking meters that accept credit cards and pay-by-phone; • A new job-training program that will teach construction skills to lower-income homeowners; • Support for training programs for manufacturing and environmental remediation jobs. The city’s fiscal year begins July 1 and runs through the end of next June.

RPD’s body-camera use gets pluses, minuses

Rochester police officers have been using body-worn cameras for nearly three years, and so far, a citizens’ group says, the program gets “generally high marks.” But city officials need to make improvements in key areas, the group says. The Rochester Police Department began using body-worn cameras in the summer of 2016. In 2017, city officials established a partnership between the Coalition for Police Reform, which had been pushing for the cameras’ use, and the Rochester Police Department, to provide continuing community input about the program. At a May 16 press conference, the Community Justice Advisory Board, a subcommittee of the Coalition, issued its first report on the cameras’ use. The report represents a milestone, said Advisory Board co-chair Lewis Stewart, because it’s the first time citizens have been given this kind of authority “working with the police in order to shed light on police policies, practices, and procedures.” The report praises the transparency of the RPD’s body-worn camera policy and process, its attention to privacy
concerns, its policies for storing the cameras’ footage, and the guidelines for releasing the footage to the public. The board also praised the RPD “for its ongoing efforts” to monitor the bodyworn camera program and to adjust policies and procedures. The availability of camera footage “appears to be significantly helpful” in dealing with civilian complaints about police conduct, the report says. Between 2014 and 2016, the Civilian Review Board – an advisory body that reviews investigations into misconduct charges – “sustained” about 20 percent of civilian complaints against RPD officers. Through the first three quarters of 2018, the rate of sustained allegations was about 50 percent, says the report. Previously, the Civilian Review Board gave a finding of “unprovable” to about half of the civilian complaints filed about officers’ conduct, the report says. “Unprovable” findings mean investigators didn’t find enough evidence to prove whether a complaint was true or not. In 2017, that figure dropped to 18 percent, and in the first three quarters of 2018, to 8 percent. continues on page 8
The Rochester Youth Climate Leaders want Monroe County to be carbon neutral by 2050 and they’ve asked the Legislature to develop a climate action plan. Two Democratic legislators are drafting legislation to get that process started, but they’ll need support from members of the Republican majority.
CLIMATE | BY JEREMY MOULE
Youth ask county for climate plan In light of federal inaction on climate change, a group of Rochester-area young people is asking the County Legislature make Monroe County carbon neutral by 2050. The Rochester Youth Climate Leaders, an interscholastic group of middle and high school students, made their request during the Legislature’s May 14 meeting. The group wants the Legislature to develop and approve a climate action plan, which would not only set the carbon neutrality goal, but would lay out specific strategies to reach it. The City of Rochester already has a climate action plan. The plan would cover broad areas such as transportation, energy, heating and cooling, and community planning. But it would also lay out strategies for county government to cut carbon emissions from its own operations, and would ideally include tactics such as investing in building energy efficiency, adding electric vehicles to the county fleet, using renewables to power more county facilities, and launching a county-wide composting program, says Liam Smith, a Brighton High School junior and one of the Youth Climate Leaders who spoke at the meeting. As a youth organization, the members see not just their own future at stake, but that
of the generations that follow, Smith says. They’re the ones who will have to live with the worst ramifications of climate change. “We’re asking them to think about the future and what they’re going to have to live with,” Smith says. The Youth Climate Leaders group, which formed around the time of the UN’s Paris climate summit, also presented legislators with a petition bearing around 1,300 signatures, Smith says. Democratic Legislators Justin Wilcox and Joe Morelle Jr. responded to the request by announcing that they’ll introduce legislation to form a Climate Action Plan Advisory Board. The legislation is still being drafted, but the board would include experts who would work with the Legislature to develop a plan and formal policies that have a lasting impact on both carbon emissions and cost savings, Wilcox says. Legislature Republicans generally align with County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo and her administration on policy and planning issues. And as its response to the Youth Climate Leaders’ request for a carbon-neutral pledge, the administration touted its existing sustainability efforts. “The county appreciates the advocacy and involvement of these
students,” including those who spoke at the start of the May 14 meeting, county spokesperson Jesse Sleezer said in an e-mail. “Fortunately, many of the priorities they shared are already being proactively addressed by Monroe County.” Dinolfo launched the county’s firstever Sustainability Team in September, he said. It focuses on facilities and infrastructure, the county’s vehicle fleet, energy, resource recovery, and education and outreach, he said. “The Sustainability Team will keep working to find new ways for the county to continue to go green while saving green through 2019 and beyond,” Sleezer wrote. He also emphasized that eight county facilities are LEED certified, a designation that means they meet strict criteria related to energy efficiency and environmental impact; that it has a Green Fleet of more than 400 vehicles; and that it does buy power from a local solar project. Wilcox agrees that the administration has done some positive things that benefit the climate. But the county doesn’t have comprehensive and coherent policies guiding those efforts, which is what a climate action plan would provide, he says.
Liam Smith is a member of Rochester Youth Climate Leaders, a group which is asking Monroe County legislators to develop and approve a climate action plan. PHOTO BY JACOB WALSH
And the Legislature would be able to put some weight behind it, since it could make policies around purchasing and other areas. For example, the Legislature could set a policy requiring the county to purchase electric or hybrid vehicles for its fleet instead of ones that run solely on gasoline, Wilcox says.

ANALYSIS | BY TIM LOUIS MACALUSO
The city school district and the change we need Ten months ago, State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia sent Distinguished Educator Jaime Aquino to Rochester. His mission, in her words, was to “help the school board and district make sure the children are well served through improved teaching and learning.” Elia has stuck to a deliberate process, having Aquino identify the school district’s problems and giving the board time to create a plan to fix them. But Aquino’s scathing report blew a hole in the hull of the district, and many people, including Mayor Lovely Warren, have been calling for a change in governance, from an elected school board to something else. There’s been no consensus, though, on what that change should be. But correcting the district’s problems has proved to be a superhuman challenge. Many people don’t want to step into this ring of fire, whether it’s to serve on the school board, teach, or even offer outside support. They don’t want to deal with the constant criticism. And the school board can sometimes be its own worst enemy. Aquino’s report was clear: The board must learn to operate as a unified body. Instead, infighting and dysfunction have reached a new high. During an outburst at a recent school board meeting, board member Beatriz LeBron launched into a highly personal attack on a parent activist in the audience. Board member Judith Davis decided not to participate in the search for a new superintendent because she didn’t like the process the board majority had chosen. Occurrences like these, at this critical time, are having an impact. Many district parents have grown numb from the years of problems and are disengaged from the district. Some have found other options for their children; roughly 6,000 district students now attend charter schools, and that number is likely to grow. The district’s problems aren’t limited to the school board, though, and some of them are problems the board can’t solve. Rochester’s child poverty rate is among the highest in the country, and it’s getting worse. Roughly 80 percent of the district’s students qualify for free or reducedcost lunches. Many district parents are single mothers. Rochester’s schools are increasingly expected to do much more than teach. All of this has adversely impacted the city and surrounding communities. The poor performance in many city schools is a major concern for area business leaders looking for fresh talent. And while many young parents like living in the city, when their children reach school age, many pack up and move to the suburbs. 6 CITY

The Rochester school board has increasingly been the brunt of criticism, as state officials watch the performance by the district and the board. FILE PHOTO
This is not the first time there’s been a clamor
for change. In response, the district has tried closing schools and reopening them. It has reconfigured grades in some schools. It has lengthened the hours of instruction in many city schools. But this time, there’s an opportunity for something bigger. Something bolder. Something that involves a change in the district’s governance structure. Warren and some community leaders have appealed to Commissioner Elia for action, but despite her own frustration, she has limited power. Elia can appoint a monitor for the district, says Jay Worona, general counsel for New York State Association of School Boards. This person would be Elia’s eyes and ears in the district to see whether Aquino’s recommendations were being implemented correctly. But the monitor wouldn’t sit on the board or vote on policy issues. The bolder changes would require action by the state legislature, Worona says. And while many people want something done soon, that may be difficult. The current legislative session ends June 19, and the next one doesn’t start until January 2020.
There are options, though, and this time, the community may be ready to take a serious look at them. Among the possibilities: Mayoral control. In this controversial form of governance, a superintendent runs the day-today operations of the school district, reporting to the mayor. Its main attraction is that it makes one person, the mayor, accountable for the schools rather than a school board. Another attractive feature: the superintendent usually reports to one person – the mayor – instead of a committee of bosses. There are different forms of mayoral control, and some have a school board – elected, appointed, or a combination of both – that provides community input. At the top, however, the mayor is in charge. Mayoral control seems to have worked in some cities and failed in others. Former Mayor Bob Duffy proposed it for Rochester in 2010, but he was met with loud community protests, and the state legislature didn’t pass bills establishing it here. City Councilmember Malik Evans, who was school board president at the time, was a strong opponent of mayoral control, and his view hasn’t
changed much. Managing the district could overwhelm all of the city’s other responsibilities, he says. So far, Warren has said she isn’t interested in mayoral control. A state takeover. State officials could place the district under the supervision of another entity or individual, such as a control board, for a temporary period of time. In the end, the district would revert to its current form of governance – or to something new. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Louisiana state government assumed control of the New Orleans school system, and most of the traditional public schools were converted into charter schools. Charters, however, remain controversial, and like traditional public schools, they can be high-performing or fail miserably. A break-up of the district. The Rochester school district, Malik Evans suggests, is too big. Three or four smaller districts would be easier to manage effectively, he says. They could operate independently, with their continues on page 8

District change

Dissolving the district. An even bolder option, Evans says, would be to get rid of the city school district and have city students attend suburban schools. Convincing city and suburban parents and residents that this is in the best interest of all children would be a challenge, however. In a recent talk hosted by the online
publication Rochester Beacon, former Newark, New Jersey, Superintendent Christopher Cerf made the point that parents don’t care whether a school is a traditional public school, a charter school or a magnet school. “They only care about works for them,” he said. And he posed this question: Can Rochester improve its schools by doing the same thing it’s been doing but doing it better, or does the district need to change? The answer seems obvious. But with no consensus on how to change the district, it’s uncertain whether anything at all will happen. Meanwhile, Commissioner Elia has given the school board until June 6 to revise its plan to improve the district. And the board has hired a new superintendent, Terry Dade, who starts work on July 1. That decision ends uncertainty about one area of the district’s leadership. But this year’s election could leave Dade with a school board that doesn’t resemble the one that hired him. Mayor Warren all but brushed aside the news of his selection, signaling that a new superintendent is not the change she had in mind. “We have switched leaders before, and I’m not confident that by switching leaders we will change the outcomes for our children,” Warren said in an interview with WXXI. “The bottom line is we have a system that is in crisis, and the system needs to change.” Maybe none of that matters, however. Maybe all the talk about change in school district governance isn’t the conversation the community should be having. Maybe it’s not just the district’s governance that needs to change. Maybe the community needs to change. The school district’s future might be the best barometer for whether Rochester will live up to its ideals or remain a racially and economically divided community for another 30 or 40 years.

Body cameras
continues from page 4
Body-worn camera usage hasn’t resulted in more final “sustained” determinations, however, since the police chief, not the Civilian Review Board, makes the official decision. And, the report says, the cameras haven’t seemed to reduce the use of force by officers. “We are hopeful,” the report says, that as the RPD gets more experience with the cameras and improves its use of them, “we will also begin seeing the results seen in many other communities: reductions in police use of force, de-escalation of police-civilian encounters, and fewer civilian complaints.” Among the improvements the coalition wants in the RPD’s body-worn camera program: • Discontinue the use of body-worn cameras in schools until a specific policy is developed related to privacy. The RPD began using body-worn cameras in Rochester schools during the current school year, which created confusion and anger, the report says. The American Civil Liberties Union recommends that the cameras not be used in schools “except when responding to an imminent threat to life or health,” the report says. • Revise the RPD’s policy about what officers are supposed to record. Currently, the policy permits exceptions for wearing the cameras when their use is not “safe and practical.” Exemptions should be rare, the coalition says, and they should be spelled out “with rigorous clarity.”
• Require officers to submit their written report about incidents before they view the footage from the body-worn cameras. Watching the footage can change officers’ memory of what happened, the report says, and can affect what officers write about an incident. • Assure that city officials’ response to Freedom of Information Law requests comply with RPD policy and state law. “We would like to see the data about why FOIL requests were denied,” the report says. Until recently, the city has also required that all footage released to civilians be blurred and that the audio in the footage be removed. “Obviously,” the report says, “this makes the viewable footage nearly useless.” As a result of a December 2018 court ruling, the city has dropped that blanket policy and is listing the reasons for redactions that are made, the report says. In a statement following the report's release, Police Chief La'Ron Singletary commended the Coalition for the report. The RPD will continue to meet with the Coalition, he said, and will continue to review the body-worn camera program. The goal, he said, is "to aid in successful prosecution of arrests and to increase community trust between our citizens and police officers.” Alex Crichton of WXXI News contributed to the reporting for this article.

Don’t fear the spice Szechuan Opera 630 PARK AVENUE MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY, 11 A.M. TO 10 P.M.; SUNDAY, NOON TO 10 P.M. 340-6133; SZECHUANOPERA.COM [ REVIEW ] BY CHRIS THOMPSON
My favorite thing to do in a big city is to find hidden gems. In New York City, I would walk through Midtown, about three blocks away from the main tourist traps and get lost in the real bustle of the city while looking for a place to eat. Then I’d find the unassuming entrance to what I think is a little bistro, only to open the door and enter a completely different, luxurious realm of food and drink. It would feel like I escaped the city through a wardrobe to a quiet new dimension. We have that now in Rochester, on Park Avenue. What was Cobbs Hill Pizza and Bistro Six30 is now Szechuan Opera. It is visually a complete departure from the previous residents of the space. A rock fountain greets you in the vestibule, and a large stone
bar stocked with wine and beer are directly to the right. Above the wine and glass racks are twelve statues that each represent an animal of the Chinese zodiac. There are classic Chinese art pieces and actual Szechuan opera masks hanging on the walls. Just past an ornate wood walkway is the dining room, with a cushy, long bench opposite a line of tables, and large U-shaped booths to the left that look like something from out of a scene from a drama I’d catch on the Independent Film Channel. And how did they make the space seem so much larger? If “My Dinner with Andre” was to have a sequel, this would be the place to film it. At the very least, the new space is large but intimate enough that I predict that Szechuan Opera will be the willing host to many marriage proposals. According to manager Peter Au, remodeling the space took nearly a year. All materials, artwork, furniture, and dishware were imported directly from China. This is why it looks like I entered a different world; I kind of did. Szechuan Opera has only been open for about a month, and customers
steadily streamed in as I spoke with Au. Szechuan Opera is not a traditional American Chinese restaurant. The food that we call Chinese in the States is not authentic Chinese food, but a marriage of some traditional dishes and American styles. This is partially because of Americans’ wariness of foreign flavors,
and partially the availability of some ingredients: bean curd (tofu) and native Asian peppers were just not readily available in the States in the late 19th century. Au explained that the chefs at Szechuan Opera patterned the menu after cuisine from China’s Sichuan province (which partially inspired the restaurant’s name). You can still get the Chinese food that most Americans are accustomed to, such as Lo Mein, scallion pancakes, and egg rolls. But if you feel a bit more adventurous, Szechuan Opera offers a menu of more traditional dishes. They tend to be spicy, but don’t let that deter you; the food is not spicy simply for the sake of being almost unbearable, Au explained. It is still bold with flavor, and the spice enhances the flavor. I ordered the spicy bean curd with fish fillet dish ($18.95) from the Classic Szechuan menu. It’s a stew that comes in a large bowl filled with huge chunks of fried fish and cubes of bean curd, speckled with red peppers and vegetables, all swimming in a thick broth. As much as I wanted to eat the whole thing, it was such a large dish that I had to take some home. Thankfully, I discovered that it is just as good the next morning, especially after my leftover rice soaked up most of the remaining broth. I also ordered the Chengdu-style mung bean noodle appetizer ($5.95) and Dan Dan noodle dish ($7.95), both on the refreshing cold appetizer menu. Those were a nice counter to the richness of the fish; the Dan Dan noodles were mildly spicy, with a mix of chili oil, peppers, and vegetables. And the mung bean noodles were completely new to me; I’d not had them before my visit to Szechuan Opera. They are thick, short noodles made from mung bean starch, they absorb the oil and spices they’re cooked in, and the flavor explodes as it hits your tongue. rochestercitynewspaper.com

Fans of folk-punk will find a stripped down grace to appreciate here, like that of artists Bright Eyes, Dawes, or Dolfish. Online, Campbell describes Aaron West as “a character study conducted through music.” And it’s commendably raw music — emotionally contemplative in composition, and earnest in execution. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Pat LaBarbera toured with the bands of Louie Bellson and Woody Herman. Singer-songwriter Amber Tracy has had a haunting effect on audiences around Rochester since 2017. On her solo project’s self-titled debut album, “Evil Hearted You,” Tracy paints a sepia-toned reflection of her deepest, darkest self by mixing elements of indie pop with roots, country, and psychedelic rock. With fervor and grace, Tracy bellows out bittersweet melodies in songs like “Oh Sweet Nothing” and “Leave” over heart-wrenching piano chords changes. “Watership Down” will take you on an ambient, psychedelic journey, while “Before I Fall” cycles through ethereal mantras that will leave you lost in a trance. The album “Evil Hearted You” is a swirling daydream that keeps the listener reeling until the very end, as if witnessing a ghostly apparition in real life. — BY KATIE HALLIGAN

Bringing the Jazz Age aesthetic back for a new generation, Lexi Weege & The Wondertwins will play Mendon 64 on Friday, May 31. PHOTO PROVIDED
Round trip to the Jazz Age Lexi Weege & The Wondertwins FRIDAY, MAY 31 MENDON 64, AT 1369 PITTSFORD MENDON ROAD, MENDON 8 P.M. | FREE | MENDON64.COM LEXIWEEGE.COM [ FEATURE ] BY KATIE HALLIGAN
A quiet gym receptionist by day and a sultry diva by night, Lexi Weege is stomping back into town at the end of the month, this time with her band The Wondertwins. Based out of Northampton, Massachusetts, Weege has a deep, jazzy voice, shreds on the keyboard, and has a sensual, female-empowering presence that demands the attention of everyone in the room. Now accompanied by identical twins Tom “Sunny D” Del Negro on guitar and AJ “Big Sal” Del Negro on 12 CITY MAY 22 - 28, 2019
bass, as well as drummer Erek “Candy Boi” Brown and guitarist Nick Ferrara, Weege delivers a powerhouse, Roaring Twentiesesque experience. Lexi Weege began as a performer when she was just eight years old, having grown up with her mother’s cabaret troupe rehearsing in the living room. It was Weege’s initial employment with the troupe that inspired a life of music and travel. “I’ve always had an adventurous spirit and I love to explore,” she says. Weege met Erek Brown and the Del Negro twins at an open mic, and has been playing with them for three years. The group recently added Telecaster twang master Ferrara, a grade school friend of the twins. A 25-year-old on a mission to play all 50 states by the time she turns 30, Lexi Weege has already taken The Wondertwins across the country in her typically rigorous touring style. But it’s not always as glamorous as it may
seem. Weege remembers back to one of their more humbling nights on the road: “Last year AJ and I ended up running out of money,” she says. “So, true to form, we had to go busk in the street to make enough money to get enough gas to go to the next gig. We smelled so bad.” As a band of vegans, staying well-fed and in a good mood on crushingly long road trips can provide its own challenges, but Weege and company find the motivation. “I just love seeing new places and I love travel,” she says. “All of us are pretty outdoorsy, so we like to climb shit and camp, and I just love meeting new people.” Currently, Weege is celebrating the release of her third studio album and first collaborative effort with The Wondertwins, “Do I Seem Weird Lately?” Just released on May 10, many of the songs on the album are centered on normalizing mental health awareness and, as Weege puts it, “Expressing the isolation one feels when they’re experiencing it.” In fact, the new album’s title track is a survivor song written by the twins in response to their own father’s suicide. “The most unexplored place artistically is the human psyche,” AJ Del Negro says, “considering there’s such a stigma in exploring mental health.” Framing mental health from a more positive angle, Weege brings a musical message of selfembrace and uninhibited expression. While the title track and “Why Can’t I Hear the Birds Anymore?” express melancholic undercurrents with heartwrenching melodies that’ll bring a tear to your eye, the album also has more upbeat hot jazz numbers like “Anxious Ass!” and “Sourpuss.” Weege has a throaty, leonine voice with soulful delivery and explosive versatility, and she peppers her melodies with trumpet-like scatting and a tasteful blend of Amy Winehouse and Billie Holiday. Exploring the duality of dark and light, silly and serious, innocent and naughty, Lexi Weege & The Wondertwins are bringing the Jazz Age back for a new generation. The band folds in classic blues chord progressions and unexpected, technical jazz motifs filled with soul and swagger. The live show is “a threering circus, ‘cause there’s so much going on,” according to Weege. Always delivering jazz-pop ingenuity with genuine intent, Weege has a straightforward goal when connecting with the audience: “I just want them to enjoy it and I hope it brings them happiness,” she says. “We’re unapologetically ourselves, all five of us, and I think that’s important, and I hope that comes across.”
Folk musician Joe Dady dies at 61 Rochester musician Joe Dady, half of the Irish folk duo The Dady Brothers, has lost his battle to leukemia. Dady died Saturday, surrounded by family. He was 61. Just last month, his brother John had donated stem cells to Joe to help in his fight. The Dady Brothers have been a treasure both here in Rochester and abroad, and Joe will be sorely missed. The Crooked North’s Ben Proctor, who had studied banjo with Joe, remembers the man fondly. “He just treated everybody like a friend,” Proctor says. “He was such a genuine, loving person.” Though his humility wouldn’t let him brag, Joe played guitar, fiddle, banjo, harmonica and pipes in The Dady Brothers. According to Proctor, Dady was less concerned with achieving perfection and more concerned about the spirit of the music. “As prolific a musician as he was,” Proctor says. “There was never any ego or anything like that. It was all about the joy of the moment.” I wrote this about The Dady Brothers a few years back: “Whether it’s a Wednesday night crowd at Johnny’s, kids clapping and singing along at a school performance, or crowds in Ireland — where the Dadys tour annually — the accessibility and appeal of their Irish folk is undeniable and immense. They have mastered Irish music’s deceptive simplicity and charm.” As they become available, details on calling hours and services can be found at rochestercitynewspaper.com. — BY FRANK DE BLASE AND DANIEL J. Art who each tackle the concept of identity in their work. “Verified” includes photo, video, and sculptural installations, and the opening reception included three performances. “The theme of the show is verification: Who gets to claim identities, who gets to deny identities? What happens to individuals when identity is taken away?” Chestnut said in an interview with CITY. Saturday’s event saw community members gather to witness and participate in performances, sustain discussions, eat tacos and drink beers, and roast marshmallows around a bonfire. Brian Murphy’s looping video of wrestlers — an unending grappling match between two men — was projected through a window in the barn’s loft, only visible after dark. Megan Joy May turned a corner of the barn into a sanctified space, and offered viewers the chance to participate in a ritual of connection and letting go. Among the portraits by Juan Madrid is a photo of his friend’s bare ass forming a vulnerable moon. Aside from the emotional weight of the work, some of the artists stepped out of other comfort zones. “Anina Major is a ceramic artist, and she brought me video,” Chestnut said. “Reb Ayşe, who is a printmaker, is showing her first sculpture. This is an experimental space, and a difficult conversation, and the artists have taken advantage of it and really put themselves artistically and emotionally on the line for this show. The following is an excerpt of an interview with Chestnut; an extended version of this story is online at rochestercitynewspaper.com. Juan Madrid says his Salvadoreño and Hudson Valley roots culminate in a fragmented photo of his father “that speaks to cultural clashing and the walls a portrait faces in telling the fullness of a person’s history.” Madrid’s work is part of “Verified,” on view at Loud Cow through June 15. And, or, butt “Verified” REVIEWED SATURDAY, MAY 18 | CONTINUES THROUGH JUNE 15, BY APPOINTMENT LOUD COW, 13 PINE HILL ROAD, SPENCERPORT FREE | FACEBOOK.COM/LOUDCOWEXHIBTIONS [ INTERVIEW ] BY REBECCA RAFFERTY
The latest group exhibit at Loud Cow — one of Rochester’s most experimental art spaces, located in a barn in Spencerport — opened 16 CITY MAY 22 - 28, 2019
on Saturday night. For this iteration of the biannual shows, Loud Cow’s founder Aaron Delahanty turned over curatorial duties to artist Amanda Chestnut, who gathered an international, diverse group of eight artists
CITY: Where did the concept for this show come from? Amanda Chestnut: “The original idea of
being “verified” came from a conversation I had with a friend online. He had a press pass to an early screening of “Black Panther.” And he couldn’t make it. And I said, “As your black friend, I think I should get this ticket.” He said I could have it, but I couldn’t make it to New York. He said something in jest about being “Black Friend Verified,” which kind of sparked an idea in me, because yes, he totally is, but usually the “I have black friends” statement is a statement made from somebody who is absolutely not black friend verified. So I think somewhere in that conversation I joked that I should make buttons to give to people who are actually black friend verified. This idea had been kind of kicking around for a while.
How did you come to choose the specific set of voices included in this show?
I very deliberately wanted to include white voices, because this isn’t just about black identity. I think in general and in the arts, when we talk about identity we do a lot of highly localized conversations; we’ll talk about Latino identity, we’ll talk about black identity, or we’ll talk about gay white male identity, or woman identity. But it’s still pretty cis-hetero. It was really important to me — and I think largely because I’m mixed — to include all of these voices in this conversation, because our identities don’t exist in a vacuum. I’m very used to having to navigate white spaces as a woman who is note quite white enough, and black spaces as a woman who is not quite black enough. And culturally we tend to speak about race very much in dichotomy. It’s an “or” situation. And for the most part, many people are “and,” but linguistically and culturally we don’t give them space to be “and.” I really wanted to include multiple voices in this, because that’s how this conversation functions the best. So there are white artists, there are black artists, there are Latino artists. There is a white-passing brown-identifying artist who is coming to terms with her own identity as a person of color. For her this show is in part about how she is recognizing herself as a person of color. That’s an important voice to have in this conversation. What are some aspects of the show that you feel accomplish what your goals were?
A lot of the works individually deal with identity, but what I’m most happy about, what I hoped to accomplish, is how they deal with identity in conversation with each other. Because you see Anina’s work, where she places this crown on her head, and looks directly at the viewer. And it’s on the same plane in the gallery as Sarah Anthony’s work, which is nine portraits of young men, many of which are also looking directly at the viewer, but in a very different way emotionally. And each piece individually is saying something very different, but when you look at the very solemn but powerful look in Anina’s piece, then look at Sarah’s piece at these men who are posed in sometimes sensuous, sometimes gentle or exposed, insecure kinds of ways, and the majority of them are white. I think the conversation that happens between those two works is the kind of thing I was hoping to achieve for this show.

ART BY LAMAR P. JACKSON
SPECIAL EVENT | ‘OPULENCE’
Rochester native and fashion designer and cosmetologist LaMar P. Jackson, or “Sir Pierre,” was one of the first male models to graduate from the Barbizon modeling program, and later landed teaching positions at Barbizon and John Robert Powers Modeling School. Jackson had his fashion debut in Chicago in 1992, and has since held fashion shows in and around Rochester. He has also designed fashion illustration work for businesses in Rochester, including a 12-foot-tall mixed media, wedding cake-themed piece for Sinful Sweets, and he is an art class instructor at Lifespan. This week, Sir Pierre will present “Opulence,” a showcase of men and women’s fashions. Saturday, May 25, 8 p.m., at RMSC’s Eisenhart Auditorium, 657 East Avenue. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at Guys & Dolls (756 East Main Street) or online at eventbrite.com. — BY REBECCA RAFFERTY
FILM | ‘ALIEN’ 40TH ANNIVERSARY SCREENING
Ridley Scott’s iconic film that spawned a franchise, as well as crossover movies, turns 40 this year. For anyone who’s been living under a rock, “Alien” follows the fate of space travelers aboard a merchant vessel who answer what they believe is a distress call. A crew member is attacked by a vicious lifeform, no one listens to the smart woman, and horrific chaos ensues. The Xenomorph is based on Swiss artist H.R. Giger’s supremely dark designs, Sigourney Weaver is a total badass, and oh, there’s a cat, too. In celebration of the film’s 40th anniversary (to the day), The Little Theatre will host a one-time screening of “Alien.” Saturday, May 25, 6:30 p.m. The Little Theatre, 240 East Avenue. Tickets are $9 general admission; discounts for members, seniors, military, and students available. 258-0400; thelittle.org. — BY REBECCA RAFFERTY

THEATER | ‘BLACK COMEDY’
British playwright Sir Peter Shaffer is best known for his Tony and Oscar-winning scripts for “Equus” and “Amadeus.” But before writing those, he penned “Black Comedy,” a one-act farce that follows broke artist Brindsley Miller’s attempt to impress his fiancée’s super rich father. But thanks to a blown fuse, Brindsley’s apartment loses power on the big night, just as his mistress decides to visit. This week Screen Plays will present the play, directed by DVC Theater’s Mario Savastano. The Rochester-based ensemble cast includes MJ Savastano as Brindsley, Kimberly Day, Gwen P. Our region has had such a wet spring that all of nature seemed to burst to life suddenly in the last week or so. Everywhere you look, Rochester is dressed in lush greens and cascading blossoms. If you didn’t get to work planting early enough, you can still bring home the floral results of other people’s labors. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Flower City Days Horticultural Sales, held annual at the Rochester Public Market. Each weekend, dozens of vendors will offer bedding plants, shrubs, vegetable plants, perennials and annuals, gardening accessories, and more for sale. And cafés on the market grounds will be open for business during the sale hours. Remaining days in the series are Sundays, May 26 and June 2 and 9, as well as Memorial Day Weekend extra days on Friday, May 24 and Monday, May 27. 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.Rochester Public Market, 280 North Union Street. Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever in “Booksmart.” PHOTO COURTESY UNITED ARTISTS RELEASING.
Girls just wanna have fun “Booksmart” (R), DIRECTED BY OLIVIA WILDE OPENS FRIDAY, MAY 24 [ PREVIEW ] BY ADAM LUBITOW
It’s little wonder that some of the best teen films center on high school graduation. There’s rich material to be mined from the forced transition, as we’re kicked from the safe familiarity of grade school into a scary new world, far from the comforts of home.
That tension between being excited for a fresh start and apprehensive of a new beginning can be the source of either pathos or humor. The immensely charming “Booksmart” is a coming-of-age high school comedy had me grinning from ear to ear every second of its running time. It doesn’t attempt to break the mold of teen flicks that have come before, but it’s a warm, wise, and uproarious feature directorial debut of actress Olivia Wilde. Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever play Molly and Amy, two overachieving best
friends about to graduate from their Los Angeles high school at the top of their class. They’ve spent four years keeping their eye on the academic prize, and their efforts have yielded results: Molly’s earned a place at Yale while Amy plans to take a gap year in order to do humanitarian work in Botswana before continuing her studies at Columbia. They have bright futures, and that knowledge has manifested in a smug sense of superiority over their classmates. So the girls are thrown for a loop when they learn their partying peers ended up getting
into those same Ivy League schools and have post-graduation plans just as impressive as theirs. The realization that not everyone had to choose between getting good grades and having a social life sends Molly in particular into a tailspin: maybe they went about this high school thing all wrong, and they’ve inadvertently let the real experience pass them by. Hoping to make up for lost time, she convinces Amy that they should crash the biggest house party in town, thrown by the most popular kid in school (Mason Gooding). Together the two girls set out on a mission to pack four years’ worth of partying into one night, their final chance to say they had some fun in high school before they graduate the next day. As Molly and Amy cut loose in ways that get themselves in over their heads, the plot of “Booksmart” follows a not unexpected trajectory, but writers Susanna Fogel, Emily Halpern, Sarah Haskins, and Katie Silberman find ways to make it feel fresh and honest. They get that singular time when high school is for all intents and purposes over, and everyone’s defensive walls seem to drop. Suddenly those self-imposed cliques don’t seem as important, and there’s an intermingling between individuals that results in some strange and unexpected connections being formed, if only temporarily. Making one of the most successful transitions behind the camera I’ve seen in a while, Wilde melds an indie sensibility to the potentially outlandish studio comedy premise. She works in some nice visual flourishes while never overdoing it on style, the way many first-time filmmakers might. And perhaps as a result of her experience in front of the camera, she’s confident enough to let her actors take center stage.
