Holiday Guide 2010

Page 1

[ INTRODUCTION ] BY ERIC REZSNYAK

We need a little Christmas This past weekend I saw Pittsford Musicals’ very good production of “Annie.” Although the play is set in the 1930’s, parts of it sound an awful lot like 2010. The country is suffering through a severe economic depression. Millions are out of work. A Democratic president is being pressured to miraculously fix the destructive policies of the preceding Republican administration. Sound familiar? The play’s characters sing about the sorry state of the country in the face of the impending holidays (“The windows are minus the dressing / The children don’t grin / The Santas are thin”), but there’s still a happy ending, and everyone has a merry Christmas. Granted, it’s a musical, and the titular orphan gets adopted by a billionaire, which is not likely to happen to you or me. But you don’t need Daddy Warbucks’ cavernous pockets to have a happy holiday. You just need to be a little more creative when it comes to spreading the holiday cheer. The good news: the Rochester area has many opportunities for getting into the holiday spirit, and a bunch of them are dirt cheap, or free. You can listen to hundreds of tubas blast out carols during Merry TubaChristmas. Or go ice skating after the lighting of the Liberty Pole. Or smell chestnuts roasting on an open fire during the Park Ave Open House. These are just a few of the dozens of events in our holiday events calendar; check out page 16 for more. Read on for local food and drink gift ideas for the foodie in your life (page 8), and how the big, bad internet can help you find and support the work of some amazing Rochester-area crafters and artists (page 4). Oh, and don’t forget about Krampus (page 12). City

HOLIDAY GUIDE 2010

The endless sea of consumer goods that fill shopping malls each year can leave holiday shoppers gasping for air. There is a more financially and environmentally responsible alternative: shop local. Keep your dollars in the Rochester economy by buying goods from local businesses or vendors. When it comes to buying arts and crafts, you can even cut out the middleman and go straight to the source. However, finding the right artist can be tough, especially if you don’t know what you’re looking for. And although there are many craft fairs in the area during November and December (see sidebar on page 7), they can still be a crapshoot. Don’t fret, because there’s an easy way to find locally made items for holiday gifts, and ironically enough, it involves shopping online. Etsy.com is an online store where artists and crafters open their own “shops” and sell handmade or vintage items and craft supplies. Etsy is a huge international site, but its “Shop Local” feature can guide you in the right direction. A quick search for Rochester covers a good chunk of the Western New York region with dozens of artists represented. Listed here are just a few of the Rochester artisans offering unique crafts to add to your virtual shopping list. So go ahead, support the local economy, promote product diversity, and help build an artful community, all without leaving the comfort of your fireplace and fuzzy slippers (which were hopefully handmade locally).

Quilted House

Michelle Wescott has been quilting for about 10 years, and started to sell her wares with an Etsy shop about a year ago. She quilts mostly small, personal-use items, like wallets, bags, and journal covers, and also housewares, like hot pads and placemats. Her items are bright and colorful, usually featuring bold floral, paisley, or geometric patterns. Prices run from $6 for a keychain to $69 for a large tote bag, with many mid-range items in between. Wescott (and the other sellers mentioned in this article) also offers free local item pickup or drop-off to Rochester buyers. Wescott sees it as an opportunity to go green by saving on packaging and fuel, while also saving you on postage. You can find her items at etsy. com/shop/TheQuiltedHouse.

Lisa Barbero Art Prints

“When life gives you lemons… slice those suckers up and find some tequila.” That’s one of the quirky phrases you’ll find on handmade art prints by Lisa Barbero. Another, “Make love… and bake cookies,” is a playful way to say happy holidays to your favorite baker. Her prints range from $12 to $18. Barbero’s art is light, cheerful, and fun, and she knows why. Cliché as it may sound, who can argue with a story like hers: “I fell in love and my art became what I wanted it to be,” she says. After being on Etsy only a few weeks, Etsy’s blog (etsy.com/storque) featured

Barbero’s prints. Now she makes a sale nearly every day and has been contacted to illustrate books and web banners. Forget the tequila; sounds like she found herself a glass of lemonade. For more about Barbero and her work visit etsy.com/shop/LisaBarbero.

Second Seed in Stitches

Being the handmade-gift type, Nancy Topolski crafted stuffed rabbits to give to her family for Easter 2009. That summer she started selling the rabbits and other animal toys that she calls “Foundlings” on Etsy. “They’re called Foundlings because they’re made out of found materials,” Topolski says. She uses sweaters, shirts, and pants from secondhand stores or hand-me-downs to create what she hopes will become family heirlooms. “I don’t want to be part of the consumerism that’s filling the landfills,” she says. Her owl, dog-eared, and mouse-eared foundlings are pillow-shaped animals crafted of mismatched colors and patterns. Their large, bugged-out eyes give them a mischievous look. Each founding costs about $50. Topolski also knits fingerless gloves, which she sells in a separate Etsy shop called Secondseed, priced at $38. A sign language interpreter recently told Topolski that these gloves are perfect for her occupation. For more on Topolski’s work visit etsy.com/shop/SecondSeedInStitches or etsy.com/shop/SecondSeed.

Jason Tennant

Jason Tennant’s sculptures might be the perfect gift for the nature-inclined person in your life. His masks and motifs of native plants and animals are carved using only domestic woods, which Tennant himself often collects. Intricately carved wolves, doves, owls, and other birds are currently available for sale through his Etsy store. The animals look wild, yet some, like his coyote mask, have humanistic expressions, grinning ear to ear. Running $125 for an American chestnut hanging vase to $4,800 for a surveying hawk, these items require you to reach a little further down in your trusty corduroy pockets this winter, but many agree that his work is worth the investment. Tennant said that his past customers include Robert Kalin, the founder and CEO of Etsy, who purchased one of his peace doves. Tennant sells both ready-made and custom items. Because of the labor each item requires, get your orders in early; if you get caught up in the holidays and wait too long, Tennant can offer item gift certificates, too. Check out his store at etsy.com/shop/ JasonTennant.

Pistachio Press

Rachael Hetzel has been making letterpress cards, calendars, art prints, and invitations since the summer of 2007. She took to letterpress art in grad school and began creating custom items

for her friends. Now she has a master’s degree in printmaking and sells her work on Etsy to reach a wider audience. “Without having used Etsy I couldn’t have reached the same amount of people,” Hetzel says. She usually sells about 200 to 300 wall calendars per year. You can help her reach 301 for $35; her cards range from $4 to $15. Hetzel has a minimalist aesthetic, which results in more design-based and less traditional items. She offers a holiday card with letterpressed snowflakes and the simple text of “season’s greetings.” For a holiday chuckle, purchase the “carrot envy” card, which features two snowmen comparing lengths of their carrot noses. Everything Hetzel creates is hand pulled on the press, one color at a time. She explains, “If there’s something that’s three colors, that piece of paper runs through the press three times.” Find Hetzel’s items at etsy. com/shop/PistachioPress.

Duncan Creative

Like many kids, Karen Duncan’s children grew up having fun with plastic play food. When Duncan wanted something softer for her kids to throw around, she took matters – or yarn, rather – into her own hands. Now she crochets unique and even gourmet play food for kids, including falafel-filled pitas, chocolate silk pie, and continues on page 6 rochestercitynewspaper.com

sushi. Duncan also crafts children’s hats that make the wearer look like an owl, monkey, or about 20 years older with a full beard and mustache. Most food items are under $10, with combos priced upwards of $20. Hats run from $12 for the baby to $42 for adult or more detailed hats. For Duncan, Etsy is more convenient than craft fairs. “It’s easier to fit into my schedule,” she says. She also reaches people who have never stepped foot in Rochester. “My first 10 orders were out of the United States,” Duncan says. To check out her work visit etsy.com/shop/ KarenSwimmer.

Jackbear Stamps

John Ballou became involved in letterboxing in 2003. Letterboxing is similar to geocaching, but does not use GPS devices, and requires each participant to keep a book, like a passport, filled with stamps from the various spaces they explore. In addition, City

HOLIDAY GUIDE 2010

each letterboxer then marks the log at each location with his or her own stamp. Some letterboxers begin with commercial stamps, but after time original works are expected. When Ballou couldn’t find a bear-paw stamp, he bought an eraser and carved his own. Soon, other letterboxers were requesting stamps from Ballou, which he continues to make and sell through Etsy. Ballou enjoys the dual purpose of his chosen art form. “Stamps are artistic and utilitarian,” he says. His stamps are usually made with a foam mount, which results in a cleaner print. His stamps range from $3 for many of his nature- or holiday-themed items, to $35 for custom orders. See his work at etsy.com/shop/Jackbear and let his stamp be the first in your holiday passport.

HOLIDAY GUIDE 2010

Your friend may casually mention that the pumpkin-spice coffee you’re drinking is her favorite, or maybe you notice that your boyfriend is always ordering the same dish at his favorite Indian restaurant because he “can’t get enough of those spices.” Absorb these hints like a sponge and use them to your advantage this holiday season. Finding thoughtful gifts can be tough in the consumer age, but here’s one thing everyone has in common: we all have to eat and drink. And by keeping track of your loved ones’ culinary likes and dislikes, you can come up with a present sure to please. It’s easy to find tasty, unusual gifts in Rochester’s diverse local shops that will show off your creativity while allowing you awaken the inner-foodie in your friends and family. After all, the holidays are all about indulging, right? This list of locally made foodie gifts is far from comprehensive, but is a good place to start. Did we miss some of your favorite local foods or food shops? Tell us all about them by commenting on this article at rochestercitynewspaper.com.

Wine country: more than just wine

Many Rochesterians venture to the Finger Lakes for an impromptu weekend getaway, or casual day trip spent visiting its many wineries. But the distinguished wine country, home to many fabulous tasting sites, also has other intoxicating draws. Distilleries are popping up throughout the region, and with the varieties in signature liquors being produced, the Finger Lakes are becoming a good place to ditch the Johnny Walker or Grey Goose and deliver an unusual local gift. Consider Finger Lakes Distilling (4676 NYS Route 414, Burdett; 607-546-5510;

fingerlakesdistilling.com). This distillery, located on the east side of Seneca Lake, is known for its McKenzie bourbon whiskey and Glen Thunder corn whiskey. It also produces grappa, a grapebased brandy popular in Italy, in three varieties: Gewurtztraminer, Riesling, and Muscat. The Seneca Drums Gin, a dry gin, is like Hendricks in the way that it hits on notes of cucumbers with citrus peel, juniper, clove, and light licorice. The distillery’s Vintner’s Vodka has a bit of grape character, too. Other liqueurs offered include Maplejack, made from New York apples, and Cassis, made with local black currants, as well as other varieties like blueberry, raspberry, and cherry. Hidden Marsh Distillery (part of Montezuma Winery, 2981 Auburn Road in Seneca Falls; 315-568-8190; beevodka.com) uses honey in a number of its liquors. The star of its collection, BEE Vodka, is made from regional Finger Lakes honey, and has undertones of caramel, but isn’t sweet. Also available is the award-winning apple brandy and Queen’s Flight honey brandy, which is aged in charred oak and has a caramel and vanilla aroma. The distillery’s maple liqueur is made from New York State maple syrup. Knapp Winery (2770 County Road 128, Romulus; 800-869-9271; knappwine.com) produces limoncello, a lemony and sweet liqueur traditionally served after meals in Italy, and offers a twist on the classic with its Limencello. Knapp’s brandy delivers hints of butterscotch, vanilla, and caramel. The winery also has a selection of ports, cordials, and grappa. Six Mile Creek Vineyards (1551 Slaterville Road, Ithaca; 607-272-9463; sixmilecreek. com) launched its “Spirits by Battistella” liquor line, including vodka, gin, grappa, and limoncello. The vodka is distilled from a

Spread ‘em: oils, vinegars, spreads, and sauces

Rochester is home to many culinary creations, especially when you consider the number of condiments it brings to the table. Maybe some of these locally made products can spice up a stocking. Availability differs for each product, so check the websites for retail locations. Geulah’s Spicy Tomato Spread (geulahs. com) is sweet and fresh with a kick – but not too spicy. The blend of red garlic, salt, and cumin enhance the tomato taste, while the added cayenne pepper helps boost metabolism. It’s a good alternative to the typical sandwich spreads, especially when mixed with hummus. Zweigle’s Hot Dog Sauce (zweigles.com) is a good alternative to putting the famous local sausages under the tree. At least you can deliver the Rochester flavor in the form of the company’s nearly as-famous sauce, which blends ketchup, relish, onions, and garlic with a hit of cayenne pepper. It’s also gluten free. For your Jewish friends, the kosher Boss Sauce (bosssauce.com) has been a Rochester legend since the 80’s. It leaves any kind of meat, poultry, or veggie with a spicy sweet finish and touch of vinegar flavor. For a savory treat, try Nunda Mustard (nundamustard.com). You’d think you were shopping for beer with the amount of obscure-flavored mustards this local company offers. Honey brew, smoky maple, and cracked peppercorn are just a few of the varieties. These unexpected

flavors definitely gives the mustard a reason to leave the sandwich and morph into dipping sauces, spreads, and marinades. Great for dipping pretzels. For something a little more upscale, check out the Cosimano e Ferrari Olive Oil Company (cfoliveoil.vpweb.com). This fairly new vendor at the Rochester Public Market sells oils and vinegars infused with different fruits or herbs, like the peach vinegar or basil-infused olive oil. They can be used in cooking, as salad dressings, or bread dips, and can enhance any foodie’s pantry.

Home sweet home: chocolate and candy

Candy or chocolate is a fool-proof gift – everybody has a sweet tooth around the holidays – but a Whitman’s Sampler can be a little clichéd. But no worries – many local candy shops around Rochester have thrown imaginative twists on even the most basic sweets. Stever’s Candies (623 Park Ave; 473-2098; steverscandy.com) has been a Rochester classic for more than 60 years. The shop is known for its bestselling sleeves of non pareils (those thin chocolate wafers covered in tiny candy sprinkles), but for a bit of fun throw some “black coal” into stockings. And since not everyone likes or can eat chocolate, check out Stever’s creamy, fruity sherbet squares, peanut brittle, or caramels. Hedonist Artisan Chocolates (674 South Ave; 461-2815; hedonistchocolates. com) offers an unusual goat-cheese chocolate collection, but the shop’s holiday sampler might make a more appropriate continues on page 10

Affaire de Chocolat (1769 Penfield Road in Penfield; 387-9111; affairedechocolat.com) specializes in chocolates that come in a plethora of comical, classic, and personal shapes. Pick up house-made chocolates cast to look like fingers, rats, a tool kit, high heels, snowmobiles, golf clubs, or cell phones; whatever matches the personality of the person on your list. And don’t forget the chocolate-covered Twinkies. Besides the huge chocolate platters and gift baskets created by Encore Chocolates (147 Pattonwood Dr.; 266-2970; encorechocolates.com) the signature “Lotus Bowl” stands apart. The bowl – a thin chocolate shell hand rolled on location -- looks like it is made out of feathers. It comes in four sizes, and can be

Whether it’s a grilling gift basket for your man, or a jumble of spices for your friends with adventurous taste buds, putting something together for someone shows a lot of thought. Niblack Foods (900 Jefferson Road; 292-0790; niblackfoods.com) is an ingredient warehouse, and possibly one of the best-kept secrets in town. Although it often sells in bulk for restaurants, the store carries a surplus of spices from all around the world, as well as a large collection of locally produced name-brand sauces.

[ ESSAY ] BY ERIC REZSNYAK

Last holiday season, my family entered the danger zone. My 9year-old nephew, a video-game addict whose bottom must surely be fusing to the couch by now, was asked to feed the dogs. An hour went by, and the bowls went unfilled. Someone made a vague reference to a watchful Santa, and without pausing his game he threw a side-eyed glance and muttered something like, “You don’t really expect me to fall for that one anymore, do you?” More troubling: the 3-year-old niece had a nasty habit of getting out of bed and sneaking into her parents’ bedroom to watch cartoons. I was on the phone with her mother when she detected the distinct sounds of “Phineas & Ferb” emanating upstairs. Mom reminded her precocious daughter that she if she kept misbehaving, Santa would take all of her presents and give them to other children. The response, verbatim: “Mommy! Santa better not give any of my toys to other kids!” And just like that, The Santa Threat no longer worked. The 9-year-old is understandable; that’s about the age kids figure out that the elves probably aren’t pumping out Nintendo DSes and iPads along with rocking horses and dollies. But a 3-year-old no longer cowed by the idea of Santa skipping her stocking? I can remember sobbing as a 5-, 6-, 7-year-old, my parents bellowing that Christmas would be cancelled if my brothers and I didn’t clean up our disaster area of a bedroom. Were my parents more

terrifying than parents today? Are modern kids tougher? And if we give up on The Santa Sanction, what hope do the parents of this nation have in keeping their hyped-up kids in line during the holiday season? The answer may lie in the distant past. Shortly after the niece’s cartoon tantrum, my roommate introduced me to Krampus, an archaic Eastern European holiday icon he heard about via his hairdresser. (It’s always the hairdressers.) According to folklore, Krampus — a terrifying goat-man hybrid that looks like, well, Satan — used to pal around with St. Nicholas during the holiday season. While St. Nick gave presents to the good kids, Krampus would threaten and punish the bad ones. Sometimes he would beat them with birch rods. Other times he’d throw them in a sack and drag them to the pits of Hell. Krampus did not mess around. continues on page 14 Forget The Grinch; Krampus and other malevolent holiday icons might prove helpful in encouraging your kids to behave this holiday season. illustration by phil mcandrew

of sick person advocates terrorizing little kids? But the truth is, humanity has a long, rich tradition of scaring the bejeezus out of children for their own good. Consider fairy tales. “Hansel and Gretel” teaches kids not to be greedy. “Pinocchio” warns about what happens when you behave like an ass. “The Three Little Pigs” imparts important lessons about sound mason work. You get the picture. Most of the classics have been cleaned up for modern audiences — they used to be much more graphic in the old days — but the moral lessons remain. Be good, lest you get eaten by wolves or some other terrible creature. It’s no different with Krampus, or any of his creepy holiday brethren. That’s right: there’s a whole bunch of antiSantas who allegedly tormented naughty children in various regions of Europe for centuries. My favorites include: • Knecht Ruprecht, typically associated with 17th- century Germany. Legend says that he was an old man who would test children about whether or not they could pray. Those who could pray got nuts, gingerbread, and fruit; those who couldn’t were given crappy presents like stick or stones. Or he simply beat them with a bag full of ashes. • La Pere Fouettard, or “The Whipping Father,” from 12th-century France. He dispensed lumps of coal and floggings to the naughty children while St. Nicholas handed out gifts to the well behaved. • Black Peter, from the Netherlands. Peter is tough to describe. There are some uncomfortable racial associations, and in modern times he apparently has been recast as some kind of jester. But here’s something that might spook the kids: Pete apparently used to snatch up bad children, throw them into a giant dufflebag, and smuggle them off to Spain. Although honestly, who’s going to turn down a free trip to Spain, kidnapped or not? There are others, but I’m sticking with

Krampus. For one thing, he’s the scariest and most effective. And also, there’s an

underground pop-culture movement to bring the big guy back. He was referenced recently on “The Venture Bros.” cartoon and by Stephen Colbert in his 2009 holiday special. There are YouTube videos of young Eastern European guys holding festivals in his honor, where they make Krampus costumes and chase and beat passersby with huge sticks. Last year, I even found Krampus beer in the fancy international beer section in Wegmans. He’s a rising star, and I am totally riding on his evil coattails. This year I started introducing Krampus to the kids during our Halloween pumpkin-carving party. They were barking out demands and grabbing equipment with nary a please or thank you in the mix. I brought up that Christmas is coming, and that this year, Santa might bring a friend with him. That friend, Krampus, doesn’t like kids who don’t use their manners, or don’t listen to their parents. In fact, he takes bad kids, puts them in a sack, and whacks them with sticks. And he watches them all the time, just like Santa. Suddenly the “pleases” entered the conversation. The whining stopped. My sister-in-law said that apropos of nothing, last week the now-4-year-old asked about Krampus. She’s not necessarily scared, but she seems wary, perplexed. The experiment is working. I’m planning to kick things up a notch by handing out Krampus dossiers for the Thanksgiving road trip to grandma’s house. (I’m leaving out the pits-of-hell part, at least for a few more years. Baby steps.) A few friends have reacted in horror to the plan, and truthfully I get their point: it is mean to deliberately scare children. I love my nieces and nephews dearly, I really do. But they can be insufferable when the mood takes them, and if these cautionary tales worked on our great- great- great-grandparents, why not use them now? The carrot no longer works, because at least in our family, the kids know they’re going to get presents under the tree, no matter how obnoxious they are. So now we’re trying the stick. And if those YouTube videos and folk tales are to be believed, nobody works a stick like my man Krampus.
