completely mocks his work and his legacy, diminishing his name to “Freddy D” like he was some pop star. If your business thinks this is O.K., than you need a better marketing department and a better conscience. What’s next, Susan B. Anthony lip gloss?
That’s cold
Like many Bernie Sanders supporters, I’ve done a lot of reflecting after recent primaries and caucuses. While I’m still a Bernie supporter through and through, I’m grounded enough to accept reality. Unless something massive happens before the convention, we’re not going to swing enough superdelegates to clinch the nomination, and that’s O.K. This primary season has taught me a lot. I got involved, I got informed, and I learned that my voice counts. I learned that there is hope for our country and our political system. There are politicians out there who put the people before themselves. In an open letter to Senator Sanders, Robert Reich summed it up best, “At the start they labeled you a ‘fringe’ candidate — a 74-year-old, political Independent, Jewish, selfdescribed democratic socialist, who stood zero chance against the Democratic political establishment, the mainstream media, and the moneyed interests. Then you won 22 states.” I know that at the moment, Bernie is still my candidate. I’ll still drive proudly around the Flower City with my Bernie bumper sticker. There’s a bit of time between now and the convention, and as we’ve learned in this election cycle, you never know what will happen next. Thank you, Bernie, for all you’ve done and for changing the political landscape.
About Three Head Brewing’s plan to sell a Freddy D lager in honor of Frederick Douglass:
With all due respect to the hero Mr. Douglass was and always will be, when I read his quote: “In order to make a man a slave, it is necessary to silence or drown his mind,” I wasn’t sure if he was talking alcohol or religion. Me, I’m tipping back a cold, frosty brew. I know what side I’m on in this debate. JUDY CLAY
I am very glad that the owners of Three Heads are proud Rochesterians and want to honor the city with naming beers after all things Rochester. I applaud that. I was born and raised here and I am a proud Rochesterian, too. I am a beer drinker and think that Prohibition was wrong. But whether Frederick Douglass was rightly or wrongly against Prohibition is, I think, a moot point. He personally was a recovering alcoholic who opposed drinking alcohol for himself. And regardless of his possible views about Prohibition, he didn’t drink. So to then “honor” that man by putting his name on a bottle of alcohol seems in bad taste to me. ESCHREPPEL
Really disappointing. I love wine, beer, and all spirits, but the sheer ignorance of this boggles me. Why on earth would you use a social activist who believed that alcohol was used to hurt and silence slaves to endorse alcohol? It 2 CITY

The Orlando tragedy and our struggle against hate Once again, we grieve over the victims of a mass shooting – this time, more than a hundred dead and wounded, people who were simply having a good time together in Orlando, dancing, enjoying being with friends. The site of Sunday’s tragedy was a gay nightclub and resource center, so this massacre was likely a hate crime as well as a terrorist attack. And in this presidential election year in this deeply divided nation, the tragedy will be a potent campaign topic. Within hours of the shooting, some members of Congress were linking the tragedy with their own concerns about ISIS-inspired terrorism and gun control, and I don’t think that does any disservice to the dead and wounded. Federal officials say that the man who wielded those guns, 29-year-old Omar Mateen, phoned 911 and pledged his allegiance to ISIS during a lull in the attack. It is fact that some Americans, for whatever reason, are attracted to groups like ISIS, and that some of them have attacked other Americans. And it would be dangerously irresponsible for the federal government not to try to prevent more attacks. It is also fact that guns killed and maimed innocent people in the nightclub in Orlando. Guns were involved in the San Bernadino attack, and they’ve been involved in many other horrific tragedies. And it is dangerously irresponsible for this country not to enact stronger guncontrol laws. So yes indeed: during this presidential election campaign, let’s talk about ISISinspired terrorism and gun control. Let’s talk, too, about how we protect our constitutional rights in the face of terrorist threats. This country does not have a good record in that area, and public officials have been able to capitalize on Americans’ fears to do some really awful things. And let’s talk about US military and foreign policy. Barack Obama has been cautious about military commitments in conflicts in other countries, in part because he knows that our actions abroad can cause or inspire more violence, in other countries and, yes, at home. But we also need to talk about the hatred exploding in this country: hatred of people of other sexual orientation, other ethnicities, other religions. In his statement about Orlando on Sunday afternoon, President Obama said
Yes, we need to talk about gun control and ISISinspired terrorism. But we also have to talk about hate.” that “no act of hate or terror will ever change who we are or the values that make us Americans.” I wish I had his faith in “who we are” and in the strength of our values. Because the hatred that erupted in Orlando has been thriving in this country for a long time. In fact, some of the politicians now expressing sympathy for the victims in Orlando have been vocal in their attacks on LGBTQ people. Nor has the LGBTQ community been alone in suffering from hatred and prejudice. African Americans, Hispanics, Muslims… all have been targets. And hatred has been alive and well, and very, very loud in this presidential campaign, coming most vocally from Donald Trump. It took almost no time for Trump to use the Orlando tragedy to launch more vicious attacks on Muslims, insisting that “the Muslim communities” know who and where the terrorists are and won’t “turn them in.” Trump has brought hatred out into the open, spewed it proudly, made hate a rallying cry from one end of this country to the other. Made it not only respectable but a badge of honor. His pronouncements can serve as inspiration for his followers. And it’s immoral – and against everything this country stands for – for so many Republicans to embrace him. “In the face of hate and violence,” President Obama insisted on Sunday, “we will love one another. We will not give in to fear or turn against each other.” I hope and I pray that he’s right. But based on what I’ve been seeing in this year’s campaign, I’m very afraid that he is not. rochestercitynewspaper.com

Two vie for rights Rivera release to Midtown site approved The City of Rochester has two proposals for a vacant downtown parcel at Midtown. One is for a casino-performing arts center run by the Seneca Nation of Indians. The other is an offer to create 400 jobs and a promise to facilitate a downtown theater. The second was submitted by Wilmorite, which would undoubtedly like to stop a Rochester casino to protect its Lago casino in Seneca County.

Tyquan Rivera will be released from prison next month. In 2009, a then 14-year-old Rivera shot Rochester Police Officer Anthony DiPonzio in the head, causing grievous injuries. DiPonzio eventually returned to work. Rivera, now 21, has been approved for conditional release.

The FBI says that Chili teenager Brittanee Drexel, who went missing from Myrtle Beach in 2009, is dead. The agency says that Drexel was likely taken to McClellanville, South Carolina, and held against her will for a time before she was killed.
I am tired. I am so tired and yet I can’t sleep. I’m tired of the hate and rancor toward members of the LGBT community. I’m tired of people who use their religious beliefs to justify horrific actions against others. I’m tired of those who exploit our differences instead of celebrating our common humanity. I’m tired of seeing loved ones grieve over the lives of those lost to the senseless and preventable gun violence in this country.

‘70’s. Almost every institution we hold dear is under intense public scrutiny. Our values, freedoms, and lifestyle are being tested both abroad and at home. We often don’t trust those who don’t look or speak or love like us over there and next door. It’s as if our national psyche is undergoing some kind of transition, and we don’t know where we’re headed or what we really want. It’s a bit scary. While watching the news coverage about the mass shooting Saturday night at the gay night club in Orlando, my thoughts focused on the raw fear and horror those men and women in the club must have felt. I could imagine them begging for their lives. continues on page 6

And most of all, I’m tired of politicians who make empty statements about prayers and condolences for the families of victims. Their words incense me, and then I start to feel myself become hateful. Like so many Americans, I thought the events of September 11 would lead to a re-evaluation of our policies concerning the Middle East. I thought the election of our first black president would change our attitudes about race. And I thought after the mass shooting in Sandy Hook Elementary School we would surely address senseless gun violence in this country. But the changes I anticipated didn’t occur. America is at a crossroads much like it was in the late 1960’s and early

Ithaca super reportedly tapped for Rochester Several sources say that Luvelle Brown has been picked to be the next superintendent of the Rochester City School District. He would replace Bolgen Vargas, who left in December 2015. Linda Cimusz is Rochester’s interim superintendent. Brown is currently superintendent of the Ithaca City School District. The Rochester school district would not confirm Brown’s selection at the time of this writing. Brown earned his doctorate in education at the University of Virginia, and his career includes classroom teaching as well as administrative and supervisory experience. He was included in the National School Boards Association’s “20-to-Watch” in 2014, and that same year, he was invited to the White House to participate in an education summit. The search process for superintendent has been closed, despite early comments from board president Van White that it would be transparent and would include opportunities for public input. White and other board members say that they were swayed by advice from their professional search firm, which said that many high-caliber candidates wouldn’t apply for the job unless their application
was kept confidential. The Ithaca school board renewed Brown’s contract last year for five more years, with a salary of $185,711, according to an article in the Ithaca Journal. In the same article, Ithaca’s school board credited Brown with improving the graduation rate, increasing gradelevel reading skills, and narrowing the achievement gap for minority and special education students. The New York State Education Department’s Report Card for Ithaca showed that in 2014, 44 percent of students scored proficient on ELA scores in grades 3-8, and 47 percent in math. Scores climbed in 2015 with 46 percent proficient in ELA and 54 percent proficient in math. But Ithaca is not only a much smaller district than Rochester’s with just over 5,000 students — the Rochester school district has about 30,000 students — but the enrollment is almost the reverse of Rochester’s in demographic terms. Only 9 percent of Ithaca’s students are African American, 5 percent are Hispanic, and 66 percent are white. Less than 40 percent are economically disadvantaged and just 5 percent are English language learners.
Brown, in most respects, would be making an upward career move. The Rochester school district, the third largest in the state, is one of Monroe County’s largest employers, with an annual budget that is closing in on $1 billion. But the district also faces some of the most serious and deeply entrenched academic and managerial challenges in the country. It has: the lowest four-year graduation rate of New York’s big five school districts; one of the lowest graduation rates for black males in the country; a culture of instability and racial inequities; and a sizable list of schools tagged by the state as low performing. In Rochester, Brown would need to grapple with a student population that is largely black and Latino, and a teaching staff that is largely white. And Rochester’s childhood poverty rate puts it on par with cities such as Detroit and New Orleans. Brown would report to a school board that is decidedly hands-on in its supervision: an issue that proved untenable for former superintendent Vargas. He’ll need to negotiate with a notoriously strong leader of the teachers union, and he’ll have to work with Mayor Lovely Warren, who

isn’t always keen on collaboration with the city school district. Last April, for instance, Warren proposed putting the most troubled schools into a separate district that would be managed by a company or organization that she helped choose. The New York State Education Department told Warren that her plan isn’t permitted by state law.

For several hours I watched the blinking red-and-blue lights and the images of people embraced in sadness outside of the club. I watched the alleged shooter’s father speak about his son’s actions, his ex-wife recall his propensity for violence, and the crawl across the bottom of the screen saying that Donald Trump thinks that President Obama should step down. I thought of my husband, Daryl, and the life we’ve had together, and all the changes we’ve seen in our lifetime: the end of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and the Supreme Court’s decision on marriage equality. And then I thought of Walt Whitman and the first lines to his epic poem “Leaves of Grass.” “I celebrate myself, and sing myself, And what I assume you shall assume, For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.” Whitman was an enigma to me. He experienced such deep rejection and he witnessed the unimaginable horrors of the Civil War. He sat with soldiers dying of disease and injuries and wrote letters home to their loved ones for them. Still, I always hear optimism and hope in Whitman’s words. He believed in the human spirit and he had hope for America. As tired as I find myself today, I have hope. As I told my editor, Chris Fien, I believe we’ll someday find cures for cancer and AIDS. One day we’ll even figure out how to live on the moon and deep in the ocean. And I still hope we can find a way to love each other and live peacefully, without prejudice or hate. If we lose hope, we lose everything.

The ole watering hole [ CHOW HOUND ] BY KATIE LIBBY
The neighborhood watering hole has been immortalized in books, television, and film over and over again, from “Cheers” to “Trees Lounge.” The pub serves as a sort of community center: a place for neighbors to meet and talk about everything from local politics to how Aunt Helen got through her bypass surgery. The building at 2001 East Main Street has housed a few of these watering holes, including Stirlings and The Flipside. And now Stout has recently opened with the goal of keeping that neighborhood bar feel, while also becoming one of Rochester’s destinations for craft beer. “Every time I go into the bar, I hear, ‘I live around the corner,’” says Jim Speedy, who co-owns Stout with John Diamantopoulos. The two aimed to open the pub in 2014 — evidence can be found on the awning to the building which boldly states “Est. 2014” — but it took two years to open the doors due to renovation delays and the common challenges that come with setting up a bar. “The awning
is kind of a joke now,” Speedy says. “We’re going to leave it up.” Stout features 24 rotating draft lines with an emphasis on craft beer, carefully curated by manager Nick Galante. The circular bar is brand new and built to efficiently utilize the space. The food menu is small, but unique, with items like the Naan Quesadilla ($7.99) which uses Chihuahua cheese (a soft, white cheese originating in Mexico), and choice of meat. Currently, Stout offers four different panini (ranging from $8.99 to $9.99), including the meatball panini with San Marzano tomatoes, fresh Mozzarella, and Asiago. The Stout pastrami panini uses pastrami, Gruyere, pickles, coleslaw, and remoulade. And vegetarians can get down with the Buffalo tofu Bibb lettuce wraps ($5.99). Stout is located at 2001 East Main Street and is open Monday through Sunday, 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. (Food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.) The building has a large outdoor patio and parking next to the building. 622-9475. roots-reggae band around, John Brown’s Body serves up a deep, deep groove. The horns are amazing as they switch off between rhythm and melody. It’ll twirl your skirt. And as far as the best: they’re good, but they’ll be sharing the stage with Thunderbody. So, better step high. — BY FRANK DE BLASE
Anyone who has paid attention to the jazz scene over the past several decades knows that the great American art form has spread around the world, and not just in terms of listening. Israel has an active jazz scene as evidenced by all of the excellent players who make their way to New York before launching their careers. Ari Erev, a pianist, composer, and arranger with a lyrical touch reminiscent of Bill Evans, has remained in Israel. His lush new album, “Flow,” was recorded in Tel Aviv with top Israeli musicians: Yuval Cohen, soprano sax; Eli Magen, double bass; Ron Almog, drums; and Gilad Dobrecky, percussion. But the global village aspect of the music on “Flow” goes beyond North American jazz and the Israeli scene. The album was inspired by the work of Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and the music of Latin America, by way of Africa in terms of the rhythms. Cohen solos beautifully on Erev’s tunes with titles like “Treasures in Havana” and “Latin Currents.” Erev solos gorgeously on every tune, including “Domingo,” by Brazilian composer Debora Gurgel, and Fred Hersch’s “Endless Stars.” — BY RON NETSKY
Matt Geraghty Project “Trade Winds: Cuba” Self-released mattgeraghty.com
Bassist Matt Geraghty takes the concept of world music literally. Over his career, he has traveled to four continents, exploring the music of diverse cultures in his recordings. For his latest CD, “Trade Winds: Cuba,” he traveled to Cuba and spent 21 days recording 21 improvisations with a wildly eclectic variety of musicians, ranging from top recording artists to street players. (The trip was filmed by Laura Newman and all of the footage is on YouTube.) Geraghty’s key partner in this endeavor was producer, recording and mixing engineer, and superb saxophonist and flutist Zé Luis Oliveira. The variety of instruments, arrangements, rhythms, and moods from track to track take the listener on a wonderfully evocative musical journey. From drum circles to Cuban raps to straight-ahead Afro-Cuban jazz, every one of the improvisations is engaging. Still, some cuts rise above the excellent standard. Highlights include the infectious vocals and flute on “Cactus Flower,” the horn-section-driven “Dry Storm,” and “Cracking the Code,” a tune on which Geraghty displays his prowess on the electric bass. — BY RON NETSKY

The electro-soul project midnight will release its second EP, “0:00,” on July 1. PHOTO BY ERIC NGUYEN
Full gradient Midnight YOU CAN FIND THE MUSIC AT FACEBOOK.COM/ ITSMDNT AND SOUNDCLOUD.COM/ITSMDNT [ PROFILE ] BY JAKE CLAPP
The music can speak for itself. That’s what Rochester-based singer Rey hopes for with his electro-soul music project, midnight: a way for listeners to drop any expectations at the door and come to recognize their own vulnerabilities. “I want people to build upon the narrative I create” through music, he says. “I recognize the beauty and burden of a unique perspective and expect listeners to apply theirs to my music.” Last fall, midnight released the intriguing “XII Labors” EP in a genuine display of soul-baring vocals and smooth, downtempo electronics. It’s a skillfully crafted package, but on midnight’s upcoming second EP, “0:00,” out July 1, Rey has honed in on the raw emotions of “XII Labors” for something even more determined. Rey doesn’t want to publically disclose his last name, and he only lightly touches on his background when he is interviewed. He grew up in Pittsford, became involved in musical theater, and was cast in a couple of touring productions. 12 CITY JUNE 15-21, 2016
An artist management agency took notice of his singing and songwriting and flew him out to Los Angeles, where, he says, he “wrote 60 songs in around 60 days, most of which no one will hear.” But he became disillusioned by the hit-obsessed studio process — and the boxes producers tried to put him into — and moved back to Rochester. He’s warm and excited as he talks at length about his music, but Rey expresses his past frustrations at being “typecast” — when as a man of color he was expected to sing or express his emotions in a certain way. Rather, midnight is a way for Rey to convey who he is at the core. He keeps himself obscured and hazy in the background, but lets it all bleed out through the music. Rey left LA dissatisfied, and shortly afterward started working on material that would become midnight. It was a way for him to exorcise his own struggles. “Rage, depression, and insomnia have always been demons of mine,” Rey says. “It’s plagued me and is a struggle every day when I wake and attempt unsuccessfully to go to sleep. I created midnight as a way to dissipate what was becoming an insurmountable amount of internalized rage.”
Midnight has evolved into a voice for Rey’s darker, more passionately unforgiving parts, he says. It’s both a release and an enabler. But the context of where midnight comes from is only part of understanding the music itself. It is an extension of Rey, but it’s also an extension of the listener. The debut midnight EP, “XII Labors,” was released last September, and the follow-up, the four-track “0:00,” is planned as the first in a one-two punch — “a continuation in sound and aggression,” Rey says — with “0:01,” out in the early fall. The “0:00” track “Native America,” which features Grammy-nominated hip-hop band The Internet, premiered on BBC Radio 1 earlier this month. Midnight is aptly named. Rey’s vocals float around deep bass and shimmering, dynamic beats and synths — for “XII Labors,” midnight worked with producers YLXR, Craves, Nick Leng, Jailo, Obey City, and Su Na; YLXR (out of Buffalo) returns for “0:00” — with a breathy falsetto that’s straight-up seduction. Yes, midnight drips lust, but the beauty of “XII Labors” and “0:00” is how it captures the full range of emotions that creep out of the late-night hours: romantic vulnerability, unease, danger, anger, even sadness. Rey is showcasing his own fears and shortcomings, but throughout the entire production — from the way his vocals might fall back into the mix to the more ambiguous aspects of his personal image — midnight is also creating a space for the listener. “I want to stray away from holding the person’s hand and guiding their narrative,” Rey says. “It might feel good, but you also have moments of dissonance that create an uncomfortable feeling; I just want people to not be comfortable, to not feel settled. It’s supposed to be a ride through the night in full gradient.” Rey hasn’t performed a live midnight set, yet. But since launching “XII Labors” last September, he’s picked up an impressive online following. And while his time in LA taught him a lot that he could use to push midnight, Rey wants to stay grounded in Rochester and build collaborations with area musicians. He was proud when the BBC Radio 1 DJ premiered “Native America” and she announced, “Representing Rochester, United States,” because, he says, “I had been told so many times that you need to say you’re from Brooklyn; you have to say you’re from this place or that place. And don’t get me wrong; I don’t have a rosy-eyed vision of Rochester. I’m highly aware of the problems, and how behind we are, but I see it as an opportunity.”

CAJUN | PINE LEAF BOYS
GOSPEL | KIRK FRANKLIN
If you wanna split hairs, Cajun music is a little more reserved and less wild than its rowdy swamp cousin, zydeco. Cajun is more waltz-based whereas zydeco is a diatonic blast of four on the floor rockin’ rhythm. That’s not to say Cajun musicians can’t kick out the jams. Take for instance four-time Grammy nominees from southwest Louisiana, The Pine Leaf Boys. The band kicks up serious dance floor dust without forsaking the waltz.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been two decades since the dynamic Kirk Franklin broke onto the gospel music scene and started turning heads with the Grammy-winning album “Whatcha Lookin’ 4.” Since then, the singer-songwriter and choir leader has been a Christian crossover artist with staying power, injecting the fiery passion of a preacher and an irrepressible hope into a soulful fusion of R&B, hip-hop, and gospel choruses. This Friday, Franklin will bring his “20 Years in One Night” tour to Rochester, with a career-spanning set including early hits like “Stomp” and “Revolution” and cuts from his latest studio album, “Losing My Religion.”
The Pine Leaf Boys will perform Wednesday, June 15, the George Eastman Museum, 900 East Avenue, as part of the Garden Vibes series. 6 p.m. $5 students; $6 members; $10 general. 271-3361; eastman.org; pineleafboys.com. — BY FRANK DE BLASE

Dance Dancing summer nights Dances at MuCCC TUESDAY, JUNE 21, THROUGH SATURDAY, JUNE 25 MUCCC, 142 ATLANTIC AVENUE 8 P.M. | $8-$10 | MUCCC.ORG [ PREVIEW ] BY CASEY CARLSEN
Summer in Rochester usually offers audiences little in the way of dance. However, for the third summer in a row, the Multi-Use Community Cultural Center will host a contemporary dance festival. Dances at MuCCC 2016, a festival of contemporary dance, runs from Tuesday, June 21, through Saturday, June 25, and will pull from a wide array of work from 21 choreographers as well as four poets. The festival features contributions from local companies, such as Biodance and Hanlon Dance and Compnay, and Rochester-based choreographers, like Rosalie Jones of Daystar Dance, as well as performances by visiting artists from Toronto, Brazil, and across the United States. There are three different evenings of programs, two of which will repeat. Laurie MacFarlane and Ruben Ornelas created and coordinated the festival, and chose MuCCC as their venue because of its openness to dance. “We developed a relationship with MuCCC because they have been interested
in having more contemporary dance on their stage,” MacFarlane says. “We could help make that happen while showing people the diversity of contemporary dance in Rochester.” The dance program is all contemporary or modern dance, “but within that framework there are some improvisational pieces and some more formal abstract works. Also some dance theater,” MacFarlane says. Hanlon Dance and Company can be seen during the program on Thursday and Saturday. Hanlon and local dancer and choreographer Alaina Olivieri will perform a 10-minute duet they choreographed, a premiere that is part of a larger, developing dance theater work entitled “Through the Roof of Your Mouth.” The work — which “explores sexuality and violence as creative mechanisms for movement,” Hanlon says — stems from his recent digital image gallery exhibit, “Void,” at Nu Movement as well as from his work as a visiting artist at Nazareth College this year. Biodance, headed by artistic director Missy Pfohl Smith, also performs on Thursday and Saturday. The company will preview a new piece analyzing prescription drug use, “Possible Side Effects,” choreographed by Jeanne Schickler Compisi, as part of its ongoing “BIO/DANCE & Social Justice” series. The festival opens on Tuesday with a dance and spoken word program that will include local poets Eddie Swayze, Audrey Sowell, Justin Rielly, and Isabel Almeida.

Art Prints inspired by prints “Echoes of the Past” THROUGH AUGUST 12 UNIVERSITY GALLERY, ROCHESTER INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, 166 LOMB MEMORIAL DRIVE MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY, 10 A.M. TO 4 P.M. FREE | 475-2866; RIT.EDU/FA/GALLERY [ REVIEW ] BY REBECCA RAFFERTY
In the tradition of creating artwork “after” existent artwork, the Print Club of Rochester’s 85th anniversary members’ juried exhibition, “Echoes of the Past,” presented participating artists with the opportunity to create a new work in response to prints collected in the club’s archives. The resultant show of 30 prints is currently on display in RIT’s University Gallery. “Echoes of the Past” reflects the ongoing efforts of the Print Club of Rochester to recognize a paradigm shift in how prints are considered, says artist and club president Adam Werth, who also has work in the show. “From the beginning, this show was going to be a fun surprise for me because none of the prints had been created yet,” says Ellen Heck, a North Carolina artist and the show’s curator. “I didn’t even know which images the selected artists would choose from the archive. With so many unknowns, I looked at the candidate pool, which was strong across the board, and tried to find consistency within individuals’ work and
themes arising from the group as a whole.” Heck says she chose the 15 artists by a common, subtle sense of narrative, interest and care in composition and borders, and the visibility of the artist’s hand, “all of which has carried into this show.” The participants in this exhibition “have employed a variety of techniques in order to create a dialogue between the concrete historical past and a new image that represents a hybridized re-contextualization of the image in the present,” Werth says. “The past is a constant reflection of the future and the present is where the two intersect.” Founded in 1930, the Print Club of Rochester is one of the longest continually running print clubs in the US. Each year, the club presents an exhibition print from a working artist, and this archive provided the selected members with a wealth of inspiration. The influence each new work drew from an older print is more visually overt in some pieces than others. Dale Klein’s monoprint “Charlotte Pier” — a dreamy departure from her industrial and portraiture subject matter that I’m more familiar with — keeps the lake-side theme from her inspiration, Paul Resika’s 1999 etching and aquatint “Boathouse with Mast.” Klein retains not only the forms, but the cool moonlit quality in the former print. Allen Lewis’s 1947 engraving “Design with Tree and Horse” is a simple scene with a grazing equine in the shelter of a storm torn tree, with a series of lines darkening half the page and birds
hurtling in the sky to indicate an oncoming storm. From this work, Elizabeth King Durand created “Tree and Horse,” using ImageOn intaglio, stencil, chine-colle, and trace monotype techniques to create an icy, densely atmospheric take on the former print in three phrases. The allusion to Thomas Bewick’s diminutive 1959 diptych engraving, “The Cur-Dog” in Werth’s largescale digital print “Quadrupeds” is smartly subtle but beautifully Barbara McPhail’s monoprint, “Fire and Ice,” was inspired by Karen effective. ART | “OCULUS”
COMEDY | DARIO PARTY 2
SPECIAL EVENT | WAR OF 1812 CELEBRATION
Rochester sculptor Kyle Blalock has installed his exhibition, “Oculus,” in Maker’s Gallery for the month of June. Cast bronze and iron are commonly used in Blalock’s sculptures, but he also ventures away with materials like leather, walnut, railroad ties, and water. An oculus is known as a round, eye-like opening or design, and the exhibit features many sculptures that play into that theme, including “Liminal,” a chandelier with a limestone oval head. Some of Blalock’s older works from his Rochester Institute of Technology graduate thesis exhibition, “Prometheus,” will also be on view.
Dario Joseph, a Rochester native, is back in town Saturday to throw Dario Party: Part 2. During the quick visit from his new home in New York City, Dario is getting together with comedians Zane Golia and Michael Colon for a night of comedy. Dario’s local recognition spread after his 2014 mediabased, “140 characters or less,” show at the Rochester Fringe Fest was a hit, and he has performed with comedians Charlie Murphy, Jamie Kennedy, Brian Posehn, and more.
The Genesee Country Village & Museum will revisit the War of 1812 for this weekend. GCV will bring the era of the “forgotten war” to life through re-enactors portraying common characters of the time, such as shopkeepers and merchants, and war-related rolls that will speak about the conflict and its impact on Upstate New York. The weekend will host era-correct activities, like music and dance, and cannon and musket shootings. This will also be the Jane Austen Weekend, with a focus on the fashions and customs of the Regency era in which the writer lived. A Jane Austen fashion show will be put on each day at noon along with musical numbers by Old Fort Niagara, and performances by the Country Dancers of Rochester.
“Oculus” is on display through Thursday, June 23, at Maker’s Galley and Studio, 34 Elton Street, 3rd floor. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. For more information, visit makersgalleyandstudio.com. — BY BIANCA NOLT

A frightful delight “The Conjuring 2”
(R), DIRECTED BY JAMES WAN NOW PLAYING [ REVIEW ] BY ADAM LUBITOW
I missed “The Conjuring” when it was released in theaters back in 2013, but caught up with it later once it hit the home market. It’s a testament to the strength of director James Wan’s vision and skill that even watching it in broad daylight, in the middle of the afternoon, it still made me leap off the couch on more than one occasion. Wan’s follow-up, “The Conjuring 2,” doesn’t quite reach those same

levels, but he’s such an impeccable technician that his film still satisfies as a pulpy, oldfashioned haunted house thrill ride. Based on another case from the files of paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren (Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson), “The Conjuring 2” picks up several years after the events of the first film. Once again, things start off with a prologue, this time the Warrens are in the midst of their investigation into the Amityville murders, the case in which the pair really made a name for themselves. The case takes a toll, though, and after Lorraine sees a vision of her husband’s death, she becomes hesitant to continue on with their work. The fact that she’s also started to be haunted by a terrifying demon in a nun’s habit doesn’t exactly help matters. But of course another case arises, and she reluctantly agrees to travel with Ed to the North London borough of Enfield, where a single mother (Frances O’Connor) seeks help after strange things occur in her

home. Soon after, her youngest daughter, Janet (Madison Wolfe), begins to exhibit signs of demonic possession. The case gained notoriety and considerable media attention at the time, and became known as England’s Amityville. While the original “The Conjuring” was a marvelous example of elegant, streamlined storytelling, the new film can sometimes feel overstuffed. With multiple supernatural entities jockeying for attention, the scares don’t flow as organically this time around. Each spook is frightening in its own right, but they often seem to have little connection to one another. That splintered tone might also be the result of the film having a story credited to four different writers. “The Conjuring” also distinguished itself with characters who weren’t simply ciphers, giving them enough depth that they always felt like real, extremely frightened people. O’Connor is excellent, though her character can’t help feeling a little thin compared to Lili Taylor’s sympathetic matriarch in the first film. But it’s the Warrens’ relationship that’s the heart of the franchise, and thanks to the committed performances of Farmiga and Wilson, it remains an effective one. Wan made a name for himself in horror, directing the first “Saw” film and the “Insidious” movies, before making a detour into action filmmaking with “Furious 7” last year. There’s a precision to his direction that’s

a joy to watch, no matter what the genre. Working with cinematographer Don Burgess, Wan’s fluid camera movements make us feel as though we’re seeing through the eyes of something unnatural. The camerawork may be showy, but it serves a purpose, giving us the idea that the camera is an entity unto itself. Wan’s once again demonstrates his command over horror movie tropes; he’s nothing if not an expert at audience manipulation. Here he makes a little more use of the type of jump scares which the original kept to a minimum. Wan uses framing and sense of space to great effect, as characters constantly peer around corners and we shrink down in our seat, waiting for the inevitable scary faces to come flying out of the dark, accompanied by a crash on the soundtrack. It works, but maybe it’s the sheer number of exorcism films we’ve gotten over the years — with each following the relatively same pattern — that it starts to feel familiar, and there’s a sense we’ve seeing the same old scares all over again. Though there aren’t any moments here as instantly iconic as the first film’s brilliant hide-and-clap sequence, there is a wonderfully tense scene involving a painting that comes awfully close. With enough expertly orchestrated chills to please fans, “The Conjuring 2” is a worthy enough follow up to the original that I wouldn’t mind at all if Wan decides to dust off another in the Warren’s long line of spooky case files.

Located on a quiet, one-way street in Swillburg, the house at 30 Asbury Street has a Queen Anne style asymmetrical façade, with stick-work decoration and a medallion high in the front gable. Underneath, the broad front porch is an inviting place to pass pleasant summer evenings. The foyer is large enough for a table and lamp in the crook of the stairs. The chunky white newel post and stair railings hint at the true age of the house, which has recently undergone six years of remodeling. Modest in size, the living room has one big window; it adjoins the painted, wood-paneled dining room. The interior is freshly painted, mostly in grey, and carpeted throughout. The new kitchen has attractive cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, and warm-colored flooring. Over the stove, a brick chimney adds character. A nice little powder room off the kitchen has a stacked washer and dryer – no need to do laundry in the basement! Beyond the kitchen is a generous bonus room with cupboards, currently set up as a workshop. A side door leads to the driveway, and has a built-in dog ramp to the fenced backyard. This spacious, shady yard, with its built-in fire pit, offers a blank slate for the creative gardener. Upstairs there are four bedrooms. The two small front rooms look into trees over the porch. Neither have built-in closets, although
one boasts a bay window and window seat. All have slightly angled ceilings. The third bedroom has a closet, and there is a full bathroom off the hall. My personal favorite is the spacious, well-lit master bedroom at the back. It has windows on all sides, and a generous closet. An old brick chimney rises through the center of the room. There is a plethora of ethnic eateries right around the corner on South Clinton Avenue: Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Ethiopian, in addition to the Highland Park Diner and the Cinema Theater. At the other end of Asbury Street, children can walk to Pinnacle School #35. Swillburg has an active neighborhood association. Their website (www.swillburg. com) announces an upcoming neighborhood potluck dinner, an annual dinner night out, and a newsletter. High-speed fiber internet access is currently being installed in the area. With some additional love and care, this house could be a nice family home or a rental property. This 1,628 square foot home is listed for $129,900, with annual taxes of $3,113. There will be an open house on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 19, from 2-3:30 p.m. For more information, contact Rome Celli at 585-756-7425. by Rebecca Webb Rebecca is a Landmark Society member, who enjoys living in walkable urban neighborhoods.

Fun [ NEWS OF THE WEIRD ] BY CHUCK SHEPHERD
Who’s a Good Boy?
Life is good now for British men who “identify” as dogs and puppies, as evidenced by a BBC documentary (“Secret Life of the Human Pups”) showing men in body outfits (one a Lycra-suited Dalmatian, “Spot”), exhibiting “sexual” expressions (stomach-rubbing, ear-tickling, and nuzzling their “handlers”), eating out of bowls, gnawing on chew toys, wearing collars (so as not to be a “stray”), and jumping in the air for “treats.” (However, decency demands that a Pup must only feign urinating against a lamppost.) Said Spot (aka Tom), “It’s about being given license to behave in a way that feels natural, even primal.” Added “Bootbrush,” “(We) are trying to grasp the positive elements of the archetype of the dog.”
New World Order
— As an alternative to the more costly in vitro fertilization, researchers at a Dresden, Germany, institute announced (in the recent Nano Letters journal) that they had developed a motorized device tiny enough to fit around a sperm’s tail and which could be commanded to propel it to “swim” faster toward the target egg, increasing the chances of fertilization. A prototype is still in the works. — The Internet pornography behemoth PornHub recently added to the glut of physical fitness “apps” with one designed to help users tone up sexual muscles. The BangFit’s routines include the “squat and thrust,” the “missionary press,” and other ways to practice what the company describes as the “one ac-
tivity people are always motivated to do and (for) which they are never too busy.” (Imagine, for example, wrote Mashable. com, “quantify(ing) your dry humps.”)
The Continuing Crisis
As Libya’s central bank struggles to stabilize a halting economy, it could surely use the estimated $184 million in gold and silver coins that Moammar Gadhafi minted but left buried in an underground vault in the coastal city of Beyda, but the treasure is inaccessible because central bank officials don’t know the lock’s combination (as The Wall Street Journal reported in May). The latest plan is to have a locksmith squeeze through a 16-by-16-inch hole in the outer vault’s concrete wall and once inside to try his hand. If unsuccessful, the government’s bureaucrats likely cannot get paid, but even if successful, various antigovernment factions may go to extremes to snatch the coins.
Bright Ideas
Argentina’s TV channels have many of the same taboos as U.S. broadcasting, including restrictions on women’s handson demonstration of how precisely to examine themselves for breast cancer. However, as AdWeek reported in March, the agency David Buenos Aires apparently solved the problem with an explicit TV public service announcement featuring a model (facing the camera, topless) showing exactly how such an exam should go, e.g., where to press down, where to squeeze. The secret? The model was an overweight man with generous-sized “manboobs.”
[ LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION ON PAGE 22 ]
[ LOVESCOPE ] BY EUGENIA LAST ARIES (March 21-April 19): You will attract charismatic individuals offering all sorts of excitement if you get out and participate in activities that are high-spirited. Don’t back away from someone just because you don’t live in the same vicinity. Explore outside your normal stomping grounds, and see what life has to offer. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Getting involved in groups or organizations that are unique or deal with cultures different from your own will promote an encounter with someone you find mesmerizing. An open heart and mind will encourage you to follow through and share what you can offer in a
long-term relationship. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Looking for love in all the wrong places and for the wrong reason will not lead to an everlasting commitment. You may feel the urge to settle down, but the partners you attract will not live up to the image portrayed, helping you to move along. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Take part in an event that mixes business with pleasure, and you will meet someone interesting. Make the first move and be aggressive, and you will quickly turn a fast-growing friendship into a long-term romance. Your candid approach to what’s important to you in a relation-
ship will add to your appeal. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): By helping others, you will stand out and be noticed by someone impressed by your generosity, compassion and ability to solve problems. Step into the spotlight and humbly accept this person’s compliments, and the rest will be history. An improvement in your domestic life is fast approaching. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Be careful with whom you get involved. Falling for someone you work with will not bode well for your position or your reputation. Attend a singles’ event, and you’ll meet someone who finds it just as difficult as you to meet a
compatible partner who shares similar interests. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): It doesn’t matter where you go -- you will attract interest. Your charm and intellect will be difficult to match, and your ability to mix in well with any group you encounter will be a huge selling feature for someone looking for the perfect partner. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Don’t settle for anyone who cannot match your uniqueness and desire for the unusual. Test any potential partner you meet with activities and pastimes that aren’t for the run-of-themill individual. If your partner does not agree with what’s
entertaining and what isn’t, your relationship isn’t likely to last. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You need a challenge in your life when it comes to love. The partner who offers excitement and can keep you on your toes will hold your interest. You may feel compelled to settle down, but that’s no reason to make a commitment to someone you will grow tired of quickly. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Take your time when it comes to love. Don’t shy away from someone different. You’ll do best with older and younger candidates. Avoid anyone looking for a free ride. If you have to take care of someone, it’s difficult to find
the equality you need in a relationship to be happy. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You’ve got all the right moves when it comes to attracting someone special. Be prepared for a fast-paced courtship and a long-term commitment. Don’t let jealousy cause a rift. Once you both feel secure, you’ll have years of happiness together. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Problems will evolve if you cannot make up your mind or you choose to be with someone who is fickle. Be careful handling affairs of the heart. Take it slow, and look for any signs that might lead to infidelity. Don’t let your heart rule your head.
