2015 FESTIVAL
POSTER
ARTIST: Sherri Baker Hamilton MEET THE ARTIST: For this year’s Park Ave Summer Art Fest poster, Sherri was inspired by the timeless cover illustrations of The New Yorker magazine, utilizing loose line work and big areas of color. For subject matter, she wanted to depict 3 essential ideas—the essence of the Park Ave community, family togetherness, and blue sky in Rochester—each of which should be savored and celebrated! Sherri Hamilton is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Visual Communication Design program at Nazareth College. She teaches Graphic Design and Typography, and enjoys inspiring and mentoring future designers. For 17 years prior, Sherri worked in the professional advertising field in Rochester, and she continues working as a freelance designer and illustrator. She has been awarded local and regional honors for design and illustration projects for nonprofit organizations such as the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester, Hochstein School of Music & Dance, and Seneca Park Zoo. Located in the shady tree lined park between the Rochester Museum & Science Center and Park Avenue (286 Park Ave), families can stop by for refreshments, bounce houses, games, crafts, dancing, yoga for kids, martial arts demonstrations, and live entertainment. Gary the Happy Pirate and Miss Beth from WARM 101.3’s “Saturday Morning Car Tunes” will be broadcasting live and spinning kids tunes throughout the day. OTHER ACTIVITIES INCLUDE: • Bill Gray’s Regional Iceplex will be hosting an interactive hockey activity for kids. Get your photo next to a real Zamboni! • The Genesee Community Charter School, located on the RMSC campus, will display and sell artwork created by students, with all proceeds benefitting the “4 Cities” class trip. The GCCS is one of the highest performing schools in the nation, with enrollment open to all City of Rochester residents. They will be embarking on a year-long project related to sustainability. The artwork for sale reflects that theme with recycled and upcycled originals. • The Seneca Park Zoo presents the One Cubic Foot an important initiative replication of One Cubic Foot in the basin of the Genesee River – to assess and spotlight the health of the Genesee River – will provide a portrait of the biodiversity in its ecosystem.
Seen through an interactive 8’x8’ cube that allows folks to walk through and hold a provided iPad from the Zoo staff to see the 3D species walking through. The team will be educating the public about the project, and distributing small business card handouts to explain the initiatives events with a call to action for the community to join us at these events to learn more. ABOUT THE ACTS & DEMONSTRATIONS The yoga for children demonstrations have been organized by Lauren Seaver of Rochester Yoga Preschool. Through the use of yoga postures, movement games, dramatic play, music, creative projects, science experiments and more, Rochester Yoga Preschool engages and empowers children to learn about themselves, others and the world around them. Spotlight Theatre Arts offers musical theatre training to children, teens, and adults at their studios in Fairport. Singing, acting, dancing, plus private lessons in voice, piano, acting, and dance. Gary the Happy Pirate has been entertaining families for 25 years with his original upbeat familyfriendly songs. His travels have taken him to perform at national landmarks like the White House, Saint Jude’s Hospital, and the Mall of America to name a few. Since 1980, Matt Dorsey (8th Degree black belt) and his staff of expert instructors at Martial Arts America have been offering martial arts training to thousands of students throughout the Rochester area at their three locations. The Pirate Toy Fund supplies toys to over 70 local agencies that provide aid and comfort to children in need throughout the Greater Rochester region. Headquartered in Rochester, the Pirate Toy Fund is the only nonprofit organization of its kind in the United States. Since its inception in 1995, the organization has given away nearly 250,000 toys.
