Edgar Wood Academy

A warm welcome Welcome to the new Edgar Wood Academy, a school committed to working with the Middleton and Heywood communities. Helping our students realise their potential lies at the heart of everything we do. As Headteacher of Edgar Wood Academy I am very proud to have the opportunity to work with my colleagues to support every student to develop, both personally and academically. We will ensure that our students have the knowledge and skills to improve the communities that they live in, to enrich the society that they are part of and to make a positive contribution. In our first year we are based in a temporary site on the grounds of Hopwood Hall College, Middleton campus whilst the new school is completed. Students at Edgar Wood Academy from September 2022 will be the first to experience our new school building with its stateof-the-art facilities designed to allow them to flourish academically, culturally and artistically. Throughout this prospectus I hope our passion and commitment to ensuring our students’ potential through high-quality teaching, in a safe and caring environment, shines through. However, it is by meeting our staff and students that you can develop a sense of what life at Edgar Wood Academy is like, and I strongly encourage you to join one of our open day events or arrange a tour of the school. Yours sincerely,

Edgar Wood Academy

Academic life Edgar Wood Academy’s key focus is to provide all students with the support and challenge to ensure excellence in their learning, progress and academic outcomes. Students benefit from a well-rounded, inclusive education from the beginning. They embrace our values to build resilience, learning to respect and show compassion for others, understanding how to use their initiative and build independence. Our Key Stage 3 (KS3) curriculum is broad and balanced which captures students’ interests, provokes serious thinking, and develops their intellectual curiosity. We develop each child’s communication skills so that they have the ability and confidence to acquire and apply their knowledge both inside and outside of school. The curriculum is culturally relevant to our students and serves to develop social attitudes and behaviours, to celebrate British values and to ensure that students have an inclusive approach to their local and global communities. The progress of individual students is monitored rigorously against target levels. Target grades are challenging and represent a student’s potential attainment if they are working to the best of their ability. We also develop students’ independent learning skills by setting frequent homework and teaching students how to prepare and revise for assessments.
