Building Towards Cleaner Water Clean water is important to all of us. From recreational activities such as fishing and water skiing to everyday uses including bathing and drinking, we all need water. Each of us has a responsibility to do what we can to keep our water resources clean for future generations. Are you doing everything you can at your construction sites to protect our water by preventing litter? Each year during the Help Make Rochester A Litter Bit Better! event, litter from construction sites is reported by volunteers throughout the city. Let this be the year you make a commitment to keeping your site litter-free each and every day. Use this checklist as a reminder of what you can do to “build towards cleaner water.”  Place litter collection containers in convenient locations around the site for ease of disposal.  Keep dumpsters, roll-offs, and other containers covered at all times to prevent litter from escaping.  Check these containers regularly to make sure they are not overfilled. Order additional dumpsters or request more frequent collection if overfilling is an issue.  Bag and tie up loose items before throwing them in a container.  Use snow fencing around construction or demolition sites to prevent debris from blowing into other areas.  Use a tarp or net when hauling materials in an open pickup truck or trailer. This prevents safety hazards as well roadside litter.  Smokers should use an ashtray, receptacle or a portable pocket ashtray to prevent “butt” litter … the #1 littered item in the U.S.  Routinely walk the site and collect loose items and debris that may have escaped.  Communicate with your staff, vendors, and subcontractors about their personal responsibility for a clean and safe working environment. Discuss proper disposal methods and locations of disposal areas.

ABOUT CUSTOM ALARM Security Minded... Locally Monitored... Community-Focused... Since 1968

WHAT’S ON THE MIND OF CUSTOM ALARM? How long have you been in business?

We were founded by L.J. Johnson in the basement of his home in 1968, now 49 years later we have over 60 employees and a successful, growing business.

Why are you a member of RAB?

It is important, to us, as we support and believe in the work that the RAB does both locally, as well as leveraging a voice at the state level. The RAB is a respected and recognized organization in Rochester as one that advocates for its members and has a seat at the table of change. RAB and John Eischen run a great organization and care about their members and genuinely support the local businesses. It helps us leverage our relationships with builders, contractors, and other associate members that we continue to do business with residential and commercial industries. It is a testament to the RAB as a great organization by the number of volunteers that commit their time away from their businesses whether it is on a committee, planning an event or attending educational or networking events. There are many ways that businesses and their employees can engage and make a difference.

What excites you about the expected growth of Rochester?

There are many new opportunities for us to engage with new homeowners and new business owners. The growth in Rochester is good for the overall economy of Rochester and the surrounding areas as we see more visitors and more new residents moving to the area as well as new businesses. This is a great time to be in an industry that has anything to do with new construction.

What makes your company special?

We are a full-service security company; we design, install, and monitor all systems that we sell. We have the only UL Listed local Monitoring Response Center in the Rochester area and we have earned the five diamond CSAA certification and are very proud to have been recognized with the prestigious industry award Police Dispatch Quality (PDQ) award in 2011, which highlights our commitment to security, safety, minimizing false dispatches,

and a strong working relationship with local law enforcement We are a certified Women Owned Business. As a local, family owned, small business we pride ourselves on providing our employees with a flexible and fun work environment. The staff at Custom Alarm is passionate about customer service, taking care of the customer, and ensuring our customers have peace of mind.

What is one thing not even RAB knows about your company?

We are the only local security company to provide Video Verification, which means that when your alarm goes off, a video clip is sent to our dispatchers who can visually verify if there is a person present in the area or not. This aids in a more timely response by law enforcement, since the alarm is verified and if nothing is there it can minimize the need to run down to meet law enforcement if a person doesn’t appear to be causing the alarm. This is a new service offering we launched this spring! Additionally, we have a new video doorbell allowing customers to see and respond to people at their front door from anywhere they have access to the Internet.

What changes are on the horizon in your industry?

The security industry is creating more and more technology solutions for connected homes and connected businesses. The ability to manage your home or business and know what is going on with people coming and going, with environmental risks, as well as the overall safety of your home or business is changing. There are more and more ways to integrate various aspects of the home and business into one solution and control it from one app. We are all busy people and who wouldn’t want an easier way to manage all the aspects of our lives without having to physically run all over the place to do so? That is the beauty of what we see in the changes happening to our industry, manufacturers are creatively looking at ways to not necessarily invent new things, but leverage technology and help people feel safer and more in control of their lives! IP, wireless, megapixel cameras, integrated apps, these are all evolving technologies that are key to our industry growing and evolving.

What changes are on the horizon for your company?

watch this video about Custom Alarm>> 1661 Greenview Dr SW Rochester MN 55902 Phone: 507-288-5522 Fax: 507-287-0757 www.RochesterAreaBuilders.com

Video verification is here now and excitement is growing around this as more people learn about how it can change their lives, for the better. Home automation and the connected home is growing with improvements made in how homeowners can control thermostats, lights, overhead garage doors, visitors to home through IP doorbell camera, and wireless door locks. Custom Alarm leads the way in security solutions for homeowners and business owners. Educating customers and potential customers on all the ways we can help make their lives easier is a focus for us because we are so passionate about our community and helping people find Peace of Mind. Doesn’t everyone want that?

safe. secured. protected.

Decent but Nothing R e m a r k a b l e ++++++++++++

Elliot Eisenberg, Ph.D. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + Despite GDP again slowing in Q1, as has been the case for the past few years, the economic recovery that began in July 2009 remains intact. The poor performance of the US economy from January through March was almost expected, and the incoming employment, housing, and service sector data all point to a modest economic pickup. GDP growth the rest of the year should average 2.2%, with growth in Q2 closer to 2.75% as the economy rebounds from a tough Q1. The combination of continued wage growth and increased residential construction activity suggests that 2016 will probably improve as it progresses. Despite weak energy prices, a continued strong dollar that has hurt manufacturing by making US exports costly and imports cheaper, and a struggling agricultural sector, the rest of the economy is OK. As long as the service sector and construction continue to expand and wages rise, the US economy will continue to grow despite the headwinds it faces. Importantly, the labor market continues to strengthen, voluntary quit rates are rising and are almost back to where they were before the Great Recession, the number of involuntary terminations keeps falling, and job creation, while down from last year, remains strong. At this rate, there will be little slack in the labor market 12 months from today. Lastly, passage of the FY 2016 budget package has boosted economic activity as it extended some tax breaks and eased spending caps on domestic and military spending, making fiscal policy pleasantly expansionary. A definite economic bright spot in 2016 has been housing, and that is due to rising household formation. After averaging well over 1.2 million annually from 1983 through 2006, household formation plummeted to just 600,000 in 2014. Since then, it has been rising by about 1.2 million a year. Add to this slightly improved access to credit,

and housing starts should reach an annualized average rate of 1.19 million during the second half of 2016, their best level since late 2007, with new single-family construction contributing at a pace of 810,000 units and multifamily adding 380,000. Despite being severely constrained by a lack of inventory, pending home sales are strengthening and existing home sales should rise by 3% annually, while home prices should rise by 5% annually. As for inflation, it remains benign but shows signs of slowly rising from its current level. The dollar is likely to strengthen slightly in the latter part of the year and oil prices appear to be rising, thus the two trends that have exerted strong deflationary pressures on imports and energy respectively should dissipate. Moreover, as the unemployment rate continues falling, labor shortages are becoming increasingly widespread. This pushes up wage growth, which is definitely rising, albeit modestly, and thereby boosts household spending. However, rising prices and wages will push the Fed to raise short-term rates by one-quarter-of-one percent as early as July, and certainly by November or December. Long-term rates have bottomed and 10-yr Treasuries will end the year at close to 2% as the economy strengthens. In short, the economy continues to grow modestly. Short-term interest rates are likely to start rising, wages are rising, and residential construction activity looks to continue to slowly strengthen as we go into 2017. Most critically, continued solid job creation will keep consumer spending up and the likelihood of a recession during the next six months, close to zero.
