REFLECTIONS FROM LEADERSHIP FROM THE BOARD CHAIR AND PRESIDENT & CEO For the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the 2015–16 season was a transitional year that set the baseline for our path to fiscal stability. In order to achieve a sustained balanced budget, the Board approved a five-year financial plan. This plan will ensure that our world-class orchestra will continue to inspire, educate, and engage our community through the art of music for years to come.
Despite positive trends in increasing subscription and ticketing revenue, the RPO still faced an expected deficit. During fiscal 16 we faced unanticipated challenges, resulting in a $634K deficit. The RPO funded cash flow shortages through additional draws from the internal endowment. Without these additional draws, and the effect of some write-offs, the operating deficit would have been $2.2 million.
We opened in September 2015 with much fanfare, celebrating Music Director Ward Stare’s first full season as music director with a formal gala and a red carpet opening night event. CITY Newspaper remarked that the opening weekend concerts demonstrated a fluidity between Orchestra and conductor as “the collective musical energy was irrepressible.” CITY also took note of Stare’s impact on the community, writing that “it seems that the RPO’s patrons would be receptive to just about any piece that Stare opts to perform.”
The principal contributing factor was a shortfall in fundraising as a result of changes in leadership of the RPO and the development department. To offset the shortfalls, we concentrated on increasing our efforts at raising major gifts, and major gifts actually outperformed the budget. As a result of the increased advanced sales for the 2016–17 season, the RPO did not increase its long-term debt to cover the deficits.
As Maestro Stare continues to resonate with Rochester audiences, the RPO saw record-breaking ticket sales and total earned revenue growth for the second consecutive season. We also reported the first year of subscription revenue and package growth since the 2007–08 season, reversing a multi-year decline for the RPO mirrored by orchestras nationwide. For the 2015–16 season, subscription revenue grew by four percent over 2014–15, and subscriber retention rates were the highest in six seasons. Success can be attributed to several factors, including an increase in product that was well-received by our audiences. In FY16, Stare expanded our flagship Philharmonics Series from 12 to 14 concerts. We also continued to experiment with different types of programming designed to bring in new and diverse audiences, such as Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy and Home Alone with the RPO, which together generated $160,000 in single ticket revenue. We are also pleased to report that single ticket sales continued to grow year over year.

As of the time of this publication, sales for the 2016-17 season are strong. Driven by a strategic five-year plan, subscription revenue is up 10 percent over FY16. Single ticket sales are up 28 percent to-date. Fueled by an increase in the number of performances and the addition of blockbuster programming like Yo-Yo Ma, the RPO sold out more concerts in the first five months of FY17 than in all of FY16. Under the musical leadership of Ward Stare, we are confident that the RPO is on an upward trajectory. Thank you for your support of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Your support has sustained us for 93 years, and we hope we can count on your support to ensure that the RPO is part of the cultural fabric of Rochester for another 100 years and counting.

FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR Dear RPO Supporters: In September of 2015, I was interviewed by the Democrat and Chronicle. The reporter was eager to know how I perceived the future of the Orchestra as I embarked on my first full season as music director. I said that I wanted the RPO to be a guiding light for other orchestras. I wanted to see us connect with our audience and the community at large in new and innovative ways. A fine example of this is our annual free season preview concert. In February, we announced the 2016–17 season in Kodak Hall with the full orchestra onstage. We encouraged audience participation by taking questions throughout the evening via social media. I believe that opportunities like this allow our listeners to enhance the experience of what they hear onstage. We will continue to create new ways to get closer to our audience in the future! 2015–16 was the first season that I was responsible for programming. We expanded our Philharmonics Series from 12 to 14 concerts and gave skilled performances of new works by contemporary composers such as Aaron Jay Kernis, Stephanie Berg, and Patrick Harlin, plus a world premiere by our own Jeff Tyzik. Our orchestra showed its depth and tremendous range in performances of classical masterpieces like Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4, Tchaikovsky’s “Pathétique,” Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben, and Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances. Showcasing our world-class orchestra was a top priority for me in our 15/16 season, and I am extremely proud of how they excelled in every single program. Our success together in 15/16 is a mere glimpse of the amazing things we can do together in the future—and I’m very excited!
I want to thank our many sponsors and supporters— corporate, local, state, and federal funders as well as thousands of generous individuals—for sharing your love of music with the community through your generosity. It’s because of you that we can present more than 100 concerts each season, including free education and community events that bring live symphonic music to all members of our community. OPENING WEEKEND
On September 17 and 19, Ward Stare kicked off his first full season as music director with an evening of orchestral showstoppers featuring Respighi’s breathtaking Pines of Rome. CITY Newspaper remarked Stare’s “consummate control of the orchestral sound could not be overlooked.”

THE YEAR IN PICTURES:
THE SEASON In May, Jeff Tyzik and Co. returned to the sounds of the Roaring Twenties in “A Night at the Cotton Club II.” Trumpeter Byron Stripling paid tribute to Louis Armstrong— among other jazz legends— alongside vocalist Miche Braden and tap dancer Ted Louis Levy.
Megan Hilty, the “new princess of Broadway” (TIME), made her RPO debut at the Pops Season Opener. Known for her roles on NBC’s Smash and Broadway’s Wicked and 9 to 5, Hilty performed from her starmaking roles as well as other favorites.
Ward Stare led the RPO in Mozart’s powerful 40th symphony, along with works by Schubert and Prokofiev, on the Sunday Matinee Series at Hochstein Performance Hall in April.
Heard weekly on NPR, From the Top is the premiere showcase for classically trained young musicians. Pianist Raymond Feng, 13 of Pittsford, joined several young musicians from other regions for the unique broadcast/ live concert experience with host/pianist Christopher O’Riley, Ward Stare, and the RPO.
Video game music returned to the RPO for the second season with Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy, also featuring a talkback with industry professionals organized by The Strong’s International Center for the History of Electronic Games® (ICHEG).

In January, legendary Tonight Show bandleader and trumpeter Doc Severinsen returned to the RPO as conductor and soloist. This marked the first time in 10 years that Severinsen conducted the RPO.
Rochester City Ballet premiered choreography to Piazzolla’s Tangazo on a Latin-themed program that also featured the premiere of Jeff Tyzik’s Jazz Concerto, written for Concertmaster Juliana Athayde. CITY Newspaper called Athayde’s “exquisite expressiveness on the violin tailor-made for Tyzik’s mercurial music—and vice versa.”
International phenomenon Yuja Wang made her RPO debut in April, performing Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 1 on Thursday and No. 3 at the Saturday night performance. The Democrat and Chronicle called her performance “scintillating.”
Acrobats, jugglers, dancers, and more took to the stage in Cirque Musica, accompanied by the orchestral colors of the RPO led by Jeff Tyzik.

“The Heifetz of the flute” (Gramophone), Marina Piccinini, made her RPO debut in the New York premiere of Aaron Jay Kernis’ Flute Concerto, an RPO cocommission.
A Rochester tradition—Gala Holiday Pops—returned in December with a 200-voice Festival High School Chorale, a Community Children’s Chorus, and performances by RPO musicians Herb Smith and the Kellogg family (Mark Kellogg, trombone, The Austin E. Hildebrandt Chair, Joanna Bassett, flute, and son Rob).
Following his smash debut at the RPO last season, pianist Vadym Kholodenko returned to perform the piece that earned him the gold medal at the Van Cliburn Competition— Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2
18-year-old prodigy Simone Porter performed Barber’s Violin Concerto on a program also featuring the Eastman-Rochester Chorus singing Wagner and Vaughan Williams.
The 2015-16 season concluded in June with Rochester favorite Olga Kern performing Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. CITY called Kern a “powerhouse virtuoso.”

EDUCATION AT THE RPO
The RPO is one of the largest providers of music education in Rochester, offering children and adults in our community a multitude of ways to be inspired by the magic of live symphonic music. Now in his 16th season, Michael Butterman holds the title of Principal Conductor for Education and Community Engagement, the first position of its kind in the United States.

These Sunday afternoon concerts held at Hochstein Performance Hall are designed to introduce children to live symphonic music, featuring free pre-concert activities and fun and interactive performances. In 2015-16, the RPO collaborated with the Rochester Museum and Science Center to present “Blast off to Space;” Saint-Saëns “Carnival of Animals” came to life with dancers and actors from SUNY Brockport; music accompanied a theatrical reading of Dr. Seuss’ The Sneetches, and animated shorts played on the big screen with live soundtrack for “The Magic of Animation.”
PRIMARY CONCERTS
This series provides live orchestral performances in Kodak Hall for first-through third-grade students in the Rochester City School District and surrounding suburbs. In February 2016, Music Director Ward Stare led these concerts for the first time, teaching young people about the instruments of the orchestra and how they work together.

INTERMEDIATE CONCERTS
These one-hour concerts in Kodak Hall for fourth-through-sixth graders are designed to tie music to school curriculum. Michael Butterman, principal conductor for education and community engagement, led four days of programming in March entitled Cheers, Tears, and Fears! Music Expressing Emotions. Prior to the concert, students listened to the music and created poems and artwork in reaction, several of which were projected on the big screen during the concert.
TINY TOTS CONCERTS
These 40-minute concerts for preschoolers and kindergarteners are presented at schools, houses of worship, and other public venues. In Alien Encounter in May 2016, little ones were delighted by a silly extraterrestrial interested in learning about the instruments of the orchestra, played by a costumed James Van Demark, renowned double bass virtuoso and Eastman School of Music professor.
ROCHESTER PHILHARMONIC YOUTH ORCHESTRA Nearly 100 advanced-level students participate in this symphony orchestra, made up of middle- and high-school musicians from nearly 30 schools in the greater Rochester area, plus home-schooled students. The RPYO presents three concerts each year, including a Side-by-Side with the RPO in Kodak Hall. Founded in 1970, the RPYO is part of the RPO’s Education Program, and notable alums include current RPO Music Director Ward Stare.The 2015-16 season saw a change in leadership as James Mick, assistant professor of music education at Ithaca College, became the Orchestra’s fourth music director, succeeding David Harman who retired after 21 years of service.

In October 2015, 13 year-old Pittsford resident Raymond Feng earned the opportunity to play piano with the RPO. Feng performed the first movement of Grieg’s Piano Concerto at three Around the Town community concerts, under the baton of Principal Conductor for Education and Community Engagement Michael Butterman.
12 individuals and one community partner were honored for their volunteer work with the RPO at the 24th Annual Volunteer Recognition Awards at Hochstein Performance Hall on May 16. More than 600 people give of their time to the RPO every year. They serve as theatre ushers, box office concierge, administrative and event support, as well as many other valuable roles.
Student musicians from the ROCmusic Collaborative performed three concerts Sideby-Side with the RPO at the spring Around the Town community concerts, held at two city rec centers and Franklin High School. The concert also featured a performance by ROCdrummers, led by former RPO percussionist Bill Cahn. The RPO is an educational partner for ROCmusic Collaborative, which offers strings instruction and performance opportunities for at-risk youth ages 6-18 who live in the city of Rochester.

Four local music educators were honored by RPO Musicians for their dedication to their students and commitment to the arts at the 28th annual “Music Educators’ Night at the RPO” in April. Educators were nominated by administrators and their peers and received an award onstage during the RPO concert featuring pianist Yuja Wang.
In July, RPO Ensembles played weekly outdoor concerts in city neighborhoods. These performances were sponsored by the City of Rochester.
