Dear Friends, Happy holidays from the RPO! Nothing makes spirits bright quite like music, and this season we have a full schedule of festive favorites. From the gorgeous spectacle of The Nutcracker to the rollicking Gala Holiday Pops, there are so many ways to celebrate.

Welcome

from the President & CEO

In November and December, we return to some of our most treasured holiday traditions. Rochester’s longest-running production of The Nutcracker kicks off the holiday season on Thanksgiving weekend, as the Orchestra teams up with the Rochester City Ballet and the Bach Children’s Chorus to deliver a magical display of sight and sound. Tchaikovsky’s unmistakable melodies are sure to put you in the mood to celebrate! Families will be pleased to see the return of our popular OrKIDStra Holiday Special on December 10. Join us for the afternoon as we screen two animated winter classics—The Snowman and The Bear—with the RPO and the Genesee Valley Children’s Choir providing a live soundtrack. Later the same week, Concertmaster Juliana Athayde shines in Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, a vivid musical expression of the changing seasons just in time for the winter solstice. Also featured is music from Corelli’s “Christmas” Concerto and Handel’s Messiah. Finally, Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik leads our lively Gala Holiday Pops, featuring vocalist Denzal Sinclaire and more than 200 local high school singers. Whether you like classic carols or jazzy Christmas jingles, you’ll definitely catch the holiday spirit.

At this time of year, when we give thanks and count our blessings, we hope you’ll spare a moment to think about what music—and the RPO—means to you. If the RPO has become part of your own holiday traditions, please consider making an end-of-year gift to our annual fund. Revenue from ticket sales cover just 40% of our total expenses—the remainder comes from dedicated patrons just like you. Your contributions help us to fund our upcoming winter concerts for students of the Rochester City School District, allows us to spread musical cheer to patients and staff at Wilmot Cancer Institute through our annual free Brass Quintet concert, and so much more. To learn more about how your tax-deductible gift can support the RPO and the music you love, contact our Development Office at 585-399-3649. Warmest wishes for a joyous holiday season and a happy New Year,

Curt Long President & CEO

This season at the RPO, Stare will collaborate with Itzhak Perlman and returning favorite pianists Olga Kern and Misha Dichter. Stare will also lead a Beethoven Festival, Bizet’s Carmen in Concert, and two world premieres by celebrated composers Allen Shawn and Jennifer Higdon. 2016–17 season highlights included collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma and Grammy-winning violinist James Ehnes. Stare also led a three-weekend salute to the music of American composers, as well as Puccini’s La Bohème in Concert, and a world-concert premiere by AcademyAward winning composer Eliot Goldenthal.

2017–18 Season

Our Conductors

Appointed the 12th music director of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in July 2014, Rochester native Ward Stare has been described as “inspiring musicians to impressive heights” by The New York Times, and “a dynamic music director” by Rochester CITY Newspaper. This December, Stare will make his debut at the Metropolitan Opera for nine performances of Franz Lehár’s The Merry Widow, with Grammy-winning mezzo-soprano Susan Graham in the title role.

Stare’s recent seasons have seen a number of highly anticipated debuts with orchestras around the world, including performances with the Baltimore Symphony, Sydney Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Toronto Symphony, and the Calgary Philharmonic. Last season he made his debut with the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra followed by his return to the St. Louis Symphony in December. Stare’s frequent collaboration with the Lyric Opera of Chicago began with his debut in 2012 conducting performances of Hansel and Gretel; he returned in 2013 to lead Die Fledermaus, and again in November 2014 to lead Porgy and Bess to rave reviews. He made his debut with the Washington National Opera conducting Donizetti’s comic opera L’Elisir d’amore in 2014.

SUZY GORMAN

Stare served as resident conductor of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra from 2008 to 2012. In 2009, he made his highly successful Carnegie Hall debut with the orchestra, stepping in at the last minute to lead H. K. Gruber’s Frankenstein! The 2013–14 season saw his return to the Atlanta and Detroit symphony orchestras, as well as his debuts with the Syracuse Symphoria, the Jacksonville Symphony, and the Naples Philharmonic with Lang Lang as soloist.

14

Stare was trained as a trombonist at The Juilliard School in Manhattan. At 18, he was appointed principal trombonist of the Lyric Opera of Chicago and has performed as an orchestral musician with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, among others. As a soloist, he has concertized in both the U.S. and Europe. wardstare.com

About The Nutcracker

Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) was commissioned to write the music for The Nutcracker in 1891. Originally based on the E.T.A. Hoffman novel The Nutcracker and the King of Mice, The Nutcracker ballet debuted in St. Petersburg on December 17, 1892 and has gone on to become one of the most popular holiday spectacles. ACT I It is Christmas Eve and Dr. and Frau Stahlbaum hold a large party. Their children, Clara and Fritz, await their friends’ arrival. Mysterious Uncle Drosselmeyer arrives and interrupts the festivities with the “Spirit of Christmas” and other magical gifts, including a toy Nutcracker for Clara. Later that night, Clara returns to the drawing room to fetch her Nutcracker and soon falls asleep with it beside her. Suddenly, the room is invaded by mice. Clara’s toy soldiers come to life and the Nutcracker turns into a soldier who battles the mice. Victorious with Clara’s help, the Nutcracker transforms into a prince who invites Clara to the Kingdom of Sweets. During the journey, they pass through a snow-covered forest. ACT II In the Kingdom of Sweets, Clara and her Prince are welcomed by the Sugar Plum Fairy who presents a grand celebration in Clara’s honor. The sweets of many nations entertain them: Spanish Chocolate, Chinese Tea, Arabian Coffee, and French Mints. The celebration culminates with the Sugar Plum Fairy’s romantic pas de deux with her Cavalier. Following a reprise, Clara and her Prince must go. Amid wistful goodbyes, they leave the magical land. About Rochester City Ballet

Artistic Director David Palmer leads Rochester City Ballet. David joined RCB in November of 2015. Since retiring as a principal dancer, Palmer has created more than 40 ballets, operas, and musicals performed by leading ballet and theater companies around the world. His arrival at RCB has sparked a renewed energy and creative era for the company that was established in 1987 by its founding artistic director Timothy M. Draper. The company performs at the Nazareth College Arts Center, Canandaigua Academy, and Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre. In July 2010, RCB presented its first New York City season. In July 2013, RCB was selected to perform in the Inside/Out performance series at the prestigious Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in Massachusetts. Since the company offered its first professional contract in 2003, Jamey Leverett served as artistic director. During her tenure, Leverett choreographed more than 20 new works including Images, a commission from the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra to music by Jeff Tyzik, and the critically acclaimed full-length ballet The Blood Countess. Leverett announced in Spring 2015 she would step down to focus on choreography and training students in her role as Artistic Director of RCB’s partner school, the Timothy Draper Center for Dance Education. The board launched a national search and Palmer joined the company in November that same year. RCB is committed to enriching the quality of life in the greater Rochester community. In May 2015, it held its first annual sensory-friendly performance for children on the autism spectrum. For numerous years, the company has performed for the entire second grade of the Rochester City School District, as well as taking dance into the schools through interactive performances and creative problem-solving workshops. RCB donates thousands of tickets to underserved youth. Additionally, RCB conducts outreach throughout the region. RCB’s InStudio Series has exposed community members to an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at the creative process and an opportunity to experience dance at a very low cost.

r Jamey Leverett, choreographer Jamey Leverett served as artistic director of Rochester City Ballet (RCB) from 2003-2015, succeeding the founding director, Timothy M. Draper. She brings a collaborative perspective and a commitment to technical excellence to her work. Leverett is a prolific contemporary ballet choreographer. In the past eight years, she has created more than 20 works including Bravo! Colorado, LumaVoce, Peter & the Wolf, and 4Play, as well as her critically acclaimed fulllength ballet The Blood Countess.

JAMEY LEVERETT

Leverett also serves as the artistic director for the Timothy M. Draper Center for Dance Education, the official training school of RCB. She teaches master classes throughout the country and has been a lecturer in the Dance Department at SUNY Brockport.

Timothy M. Draper, founder (1954-2003) Timothy Draper began his training under the tutelage of Olive McCue and Kathleen Crofton, and appeared with the Mercury Ballet. He left Rochester to continue his training in New York City with the Joffrey School of Ballet, Harkness House of Ballet Arts, and Steps. Draper performed with the Israel Ballet, the Puerto Rican Dance Theater in New York City, Fusion Dance Company in South Florida, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, and the Garden State Ballet. He then turned his attention to teaching with credits including co-director of the Fort Lauderdale Ballet, ballet master of Dance TIMOTHY DRAPER Miami and Ballet Etudes, as well as guest teacher in New York City for Nancy Bielski at Harkness House, Hebrew Arts, and Steps. Draper served as ballet master for Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo for five years. With all of his travel, his heart was always in Rochester. The Mercury Ballet that gave him his start was no longer together. His passionate desire was for Rochester and Western New York to have a permanent ballet company. In 1987, Draper established the Timothy Draper Dance Theatre. Under his guidance, world-class ballet instruction and performances were brought to Rochester. Timothy Draper’s dream in 1987 evolved into the Rochester City Ballet (RCB) of today. With his guidance and expertise, RCB grew from modest beginnings to now delighting thousands of viewers at their annual collaboration with the RPO of The Nutcracker, and has presented performances throughout central and western New York.

sing-a-long HOLIDAY SING-A-LONG (arr. Grant Cooper)

The Christmas Song Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose, Yuletide carols being sung by a choir and folks dressed up like eskimos; Ev’ry body knows a turkey and some mistletoe, help to make the season bright. Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow, will find it hard to sleep tonight. They know that Santa’s on his way, He’s loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh, and ev’ry mother’s child is gonna spy, to see if reindeer really know how to fly. And so I’m offering this simple phrase, to kids from one to ninety-two: Although it’s been said, many times, many ways; Merry Christmas to you.

Go Tell It on the Mountain Go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills and ev’rywhere, Go, tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born. Go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills and ev’rywhere, Go, tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born. While shepherds kept their watching, o’er silent flocks by night, Behold throughout the heavens, there shone a holy light, Go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills and ev’rywhere, Go tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born.

Jingle Bells Dashing through the snow, in a one horse open sleigh, O’er the fields we go, laughing all the way. Bells on bobtails ring, making spirits bright, Oh, what fun it is to sing, a sleighing song tonight, OH! Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle all the way. Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh. (Repeat) (Repeat from beginning) 38

GIOVANNI GABRIELI

Canzon per sonar septimi toni a 8 The public squares and churches of Baroque-period Venice regularly witnessed elaborate festivals, rituals, and ceremonies. Two of the most important composers who enhanced these activities with appropriately majestic music were relatives: Andrea Gabrieli and his nephew, Giovanni. Each wrote pieces to be played in the imposing, gilded interior of Venice’s primary cathedral, St. Mark’s. Giovanni Gabrieli made important contributions to the newly emerging genre of purely instrumental music. The piece you will hear at this concert is a choice example.

b. Venice, Italy c. 1554-7 d. Venice August, 1612 This is the first performance by the RPO

ANTONIO VIVALDI The Four Seasons

Vivaldi’s busy and highly productive career as composer, violinist and teacher drew its due share of acclaim. He played a major role in several significant musical developments, the rise of the concerto above all. His 500-plus concertos—he holds the record for the highest number—feature a wide variety of soloists.

b. Venice, Italy March 4, 1678 d. Vienna, Austria July 28, 1741 First performed by the RPO March 3, 1988 Pinchas Zukerman, conductor

During the two centuries following his death, virtually the only piece to receive regular Last performed by the RPO December 15, 2012 performances was the set of four violin concertos JoAnn Falleta, conductor that he entitled The Four Seasons. It was Juliana Athayde, violin published in 1725, as the opening third of a set of 12 concertos bearing the overall title The Contest Between Harmony and Invention. Its enduring popularity has been based to great degree on its nature as descriptive or program music, an area in whose orchestral division Vivaldi was a major practitioner. He didn’t stop at simply attaching an overall title. The original edition features quite elaborate explanations of the music’s content, including four descriptive poems, one for each concerto. Storms and other blustery weather recur throughout the score, blowing through gustily in spring, summer, and winter. The spring and autumn concertos wrap up with festive rustic dances.

ALESSANDRO SCARLATTI Glory of Spring Overture

b. Palermo, Italy This Scarlatti, the father of the now more famous composer Domenico May 2, 1660 (he of the 500-plus keyboard sonatas) was one of the most vital and influential composers of the day. His prodigious output included d. Naples, Italy October 22, 1725 approximately 115 full-length operas, 14 oratorios, 200 masses, and 800 cantatas, plus smaller but still substantial amounts of instrumental music. This is the first performance His talent and popularity led to his receiving the support of such notable by the RPO aristocrats as Prince Ferdinando de’ Medici of Florence. It also won him several prestigious positions, such as music director at the S. Maria Maggiore church in Rome, and at the royal chapel of Naples. The instrumental piece you will hear at this concert introduced an elaborate serenata/opera that he composed in 1716, to celebrate the birth of the heir to the Holy Roman Empire.

GEORGE FREDERIC HANDEL

b. Halle, Germany February 23, 1685

Pastoral Symphony (Pifa) from Messiah Handel’s beloved oratorio Messiah premiered in Dublin, Ireland in 1742 and has retained its widespread popularity ever since. This gentle interlude for strings depicts shepherds guarding their flocks, on the night of Christ’s nativity.

d. London, England April 14, 1759 Last performed by the RPO December 11, 2016 Christopher Warren-Green, guest conductor

ARCANGELO CORELLI

“Christmas” Concerto in G Minor, Op. 6 No. 8 Corelli’s reputation and influence extended through much of Europe. He was one of the leading violin soloists of the Baroque era, as well as a composer of music that is both appealing and historically significant. He played a crucial role in the development of the concerto grosso (grand concerto), one of the Baroque era’s most popular forms. It is founded on the interplay between two bodies of strings, one of them larger than the other.

b. Fusignano, Italy February 17, 1653 d. Rome, Italy January 8, 1713 Last performed by the RPO December 10, 2011 Kazem Abdullah, guest conductor

Corelli’s Op. 6 (1714), his final published work, is a set of 12 concerti grossi. No. 8 has long been the best-known of the set. All of the movements except the last present the array of brief sections in contrasting moods and tempos that was typical of the concerto grosso. It is only the soothing, almost lullaby-like concluding pastorale that has specific associations with Christmas.

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART

Symphony No. 41 in C Major, K. 551 “Jupiter” Mozart could not have known that the three symphonies he composed from June 26 to August 10, 1788 would be his last. It is entirely fitting that his career as a symphonist should end with three such masterpieces. They are quite different from each other: No. 39 in E-flat Major is one of his most elegant creations, its successor in G Minor perhaps his most pathetic. And appropriately, No. 41 is the grandest and most joyous of all his symphonies. He completed it in Vienna on August 10, 1788.

b. Salzburg, Austria January 27, 1756 d. Vienna, Austria December 5, 1791 First performed by the RPO October 31, 1923 Eugene Goossens, conductor Last performed by the RPO November 15, 2014

A number of mysteries surround these final symphonies. No commission José Luis Gomez, conductor that would have inspired their creation has come down to us, for example, and uncertainty exists as to whether or not they were performed during his lifetime. The source of No. 41’s nickname, “Jupiter,” is also unknown. Johann Peter Salomon, the German-born violinist and impresario who brought Joseph Haydn to London, is one possibility, but linking this piece with the most powerful god of ancient Rome does seem appropriate. Mozart plunges us immediately into the joyous energy with which the opening movement abounds. For all its trumpet-and-drums brilliance, it still retains an unforced elegance. He drops the trumpets and drums for the slow movement. His tempo indication, cantabile (“singing”), describes this restful idyll perfectly. The minuet is truly symphonic in scale and bearing, with a quieter trio section at its heart. The finale looks not only to the future—by increasing its expressive weight beyond the norms of the era—but also the past, specifically to the Baroque world of Bach and Handel, by incorporating elements of fugal writing. Learnedness and joy here join hands to conclude Mozart’s career as a symphonist in a burst of creative brilliance. © 2017 Don Anderson. All rights reserved.

THE NANCE FAMILY

Wes and Shannon Nance represent a combined 56 years of performing with the RPO, Wes joining in 1986 and Shannon in 1993. The couple met at the Eastman School of Music in 1988, and were married in 1991. They have both enjoyed multi-faceted musical careers in Rochester, where they are active chamber musicians, soloists, and between them teach at the Eastman School, Eastman Community Music School, Hochstein School of Music, and the Charles Finney School in Penfield, N.Y., where Wes oversees the music program. The Nance household has been an energetic whirlwind for the past 26 years as Shannon and Wes raised their four children: Brooke, Brandon, Brianna, and Bridget, all of whom have been involved performing with the RPO at some point. Wes and Shannon are thrilled to be joined onstage today by their youngest daughters, Brianna and Bridget. Brianna, 17, has studied flute since 4th grade with Anne Harrow, and has also enjoyed many other activities including soccer, sailing, and theater. She is a senior at Charles Finney, where she serves as student body president. When not working at the East Avenue Wegmans, she plays in both the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Krusenstjerna Scholarship Flute Choir. Brianna, a past recipient of the RPO Youth Volunteer of the Year Award, spent ten days last summer working at Upendo Children’s Village in Malawi, Africa. She looks forward to attending college in the fall of 2018. Bridget, 15, dreamed of playing the oboe since she was 4 years old, but agreed to pass the time with violin, piano, and even trumpet, until she had her first lesson with Erik Behr at the age of 11. Currently a student of Anna Steltenpohl, Bridget plays in the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and has been an RPO youth volunteer (helping with pre-concert activities before Orkidstra concerts). A sophomore at Charles Finney, Bridget plays volleyball, serves on Student Council, and enjoys brush lettering and reading in her spare time.

Currently in its 95th year, the RPO is dedicated to maintaining its high standard of artistic excellence, unique tradition of musical versatility, and deep commitment to education and community engagement. Today, the RPO presents up to 120 concerts per year, serving nearly 170,000 people through ticketed events, education and community engagement activities, and concerts in schools and community centers throughout the region. Nearly one-third of all RPO performances are educational or community-related. In addition, WXXI 91.5 FM rebroadcasts approximately 30 RPO concerts each year. For more information, visit rpo.org.
