A quick glance at this issue verifies again our continued commitment to publish the best Rock n Roll Magazine of the highest standards that’s devoted exclusively to you nationwide. It is said that sex, drugs and rock n roll go together, and a couple of experiences I have had recently really have confirmed this, when the joys of whisky, music and friends come together in perfect harmony. My partner and I attended a show at a nudist colony “I guess you can say, I’m very outgoing” it’s an experience to say the least. I know it’s not for everyone, but if you ever get a chance to experience such an event I believe everyone should try it at least once in a lifetime. After a few drinks, some good music, and everyone dancing and having a good time it becomes a little easier to get with the mainstream and drop those drawers, very respectable I must add with a great atmosphere to be - you! (Sorry no feature available as cameras were not allowed in, this is one show you will just have to experiance for yourself!) This is a great month for new music, (check out our reviews in this issue) FFDP and Iron Maiden both came out with new albums

kicking off the season with a bang! We also had a chance to spend some time in Vegas where we arranged three different shows including 311, Armored Saint and Death division. Mandalay Bay is an experience for sure with 311 playing in the middle of the pool as the fans stand in the water, it’s a great way to stay cool in the hot desert, Armored Saint & Death Division played the famous Count Vamp’d. Summer’s almost over, but we’re not quite finished yet folks RNR is heading to the Bahamas for a fun-filled adventure aboard the Motörboat with headlining bands that include Slayer, Motörhead, Exodus, Huntress and many more. The adventure starts right here in the heart of LA were we rented a RV from a company called Jucy. We also got to cover Disneyland the worlds most magical place, of course we’ve all heard of it and most of us have already been there, but for those of you who haven’t been in a while, the 60th anniversary they have really stepped things up. Highlight of my trip of course, had to be the parade followed up with fireworks.

Dave Lombardo’s Rhythm Mysterium Art Gallery By Enrique Nunez

What’s the website again?

We’re at Forgotten Saints on Melrose Ave for the gallery opening of Dave Lombardo’s Rhythm Mysterium. Did you have a good time creating this art? I had a great time creating the art, but I’m having even more of a good time presenting it to the public, and you know, telling them a little bit about it. We heard that you plan on taking it to a couple of cities, right? Other than LA? New York and Paris, In New York we’re going to be there, the end of August, and we’re going to present it in one of the art galleries. One of the Avant Garde Galleries there, and Philm is going to perform at the Stone; so, we’re going to do some shows and we’re going to present the art gallery. Then I’m off to Europe and Philm is touring Europe, I’m going to end the tour with me presenting the artwork at one of the art galleries there. Probably, hopefully near the Louvre- amazing art gallery there. Where can we obtain information to acquire any of your pieces? 12 Rock N Roll Industries Magazine

DaveLombardoArt.com Well, Dave thanks a lot. I know you have kept busy with Philm, Phantomas, and you’re just all over the place. For our Spanish-speaking audience and fans. Dave speaks in Spanish so I have to say it: “Oyeme, chico!” (Cuban slang for “hey man!”) Do you still ever use or say that? Si, yo soy (Yeah I am), well... You’re going to need subtitles for this. We’ll caption it. (In Spanish) I am Cuban, I was born there and I came to the US when I was 2 years old and since then I grew up in in South East LA, South Gate, Huntington Park, Downey. You know... I’ve been living here forever so... Dave never ceases to amaze you, guys. After this, I guess Dave has to go, but I’m going sit on that drum set and teach him maybe a couple of grooves, maybe there’s something he’s never learned before. Let’s give it a shot. (*both laugh out loud) Thanks a lot, Dave. Congrats on this again, and we hope to catch you on the road again soon.

Enrique Nunez

When the godfather of double bass pedal and ex-Slayer drummer, Philm’s own Dave Lombardo sits down and in a dark room and rocks out while playing along with glow-in-the-dark drum sticks and photography long exposures, what do you get? Well, Rhythm Mysterium is born. A mix of art and music where the rhythm is imprinted in a new way.

Nicole Macias

by Enrique Nunez

When and why did you start playing guitar? I started playing the guitar at the age of 14. I played piano, sang, and wrote songs prior to that. My grandpa had a guitar that I always wanted to play as a baby, my uncle had guitars that I would always sneak and go dabble, and my cousin got a guitar when I was 13 that I would play around with whenever I’d visit her. I told my parents that I wanted a guitar, so when I was fourteen, my parents got my sister and I an electric guitar to share for Christmas, but it soon became my sole property, being that I enjoyed it more, and my sister soon got a drum set, instead. How many guitars do you own? Models? I have an 8-string Schecter Damien Platinum electric guitar, a regular 6-string Schecter C-1 classic Diamond Series electric guitar, a Daisy Rock Rock Candy Classic 6-string electric guitar, a Gibson Les Paul Studio Custom 6-string electric guitar, I have a Custom outer space 6-string electric guitar being currently built by my guitar sponsor, Hare Guitars.

you play an 8-stringed guitar? What do you like about them or why do you incorporate them into your art? I play 6 string guitars, and I play an 8 string guitar. I don’t think that any guys should find the fact that I express my soul on a variety of strings placed on a piece of wood intimidating, and if they do, they play music for all the wrong reasons. It’s not a competition or a bragging right of expertise. It’s an expression of the soul, such as any art form. A 6-string guitar is standard for any guitar. I started becoming interested in playing the 8-string guitar when I joined a progressive metal band as co-writer, lead vocalist, and on and off guitarist. Some of the songs only could be played with a 7 or 8-string guitar, so I bought an 8-string guitar and fell in love. I like the fact that the 8-string guitar adds so much more depth and dimension to music, as well as more chord opportunities. Who were your first/major influences and what song was the first you learned to play? To be honest, my first major vocal influences were the Disney Princesses. When I was a baby, I’d watch the Disney Movies. I noticed that all the princesses sang, and I thought I was a princess, therefore I needed to sing. As for guitar, the first song I learned to play was an Alanis Morisette song on vocals and guitar. My first major guitar influences were Carlos Santana, Zach Wylde, Kirk Hammett, and Dave Mustaine. Do you know how to play other instruments? Yes. I play the piano, a little bit of drums, and a little bit of bass. I like all of them because they all compliment each other well, or could be used separately to express emotion or portray a message. My favorite thing to do though is to sing.

I’ve also dabbled in writing a novel, and television series ideas, but I never followed through. I also have always had a fascination with science because I love the mysteries of life that still need to be figured out. I look at the stars in the sky, and the ocean, and they make me wonder and open my mind, and think of all of the things that humanity still doesn’t know, and isn’t capable of knowing. It makes me want to figure it all out. I’m also very interested in Astrobiology and Microbiology. I’m always so curious about the building blocks of life, and what it means to exist. I understand you have traveled to other countries to share your art. Please do share with us those experiences. I have only been around the United States and Japan. I’ve toured to varies places around the United States, and I lived in Osaka Japan for 4-6 months playing guitar and singing for Universal Studios Japan. So far in your musical career, what has been the most rewarding aspect of being a musician? I would say that my opportunities to travel while sharing my art have made me a more cultured and understanding individual, and caused me to see the world and humanity through new eyes. This new way of looking at life after being molded through these experiences is the most rewarding accomplishment I could have ever wished for.

If you could do one thing or have one power to change the world for good, what would it be? I would take over and change the media. The media has the power to influence the minds of the mass majority. I would use it to promote I have an Art N Lutherie, by Godin 6-string steel If you were not a musician/guitar player, What understanding, morals, and compassion, rather string acoustic electric guitar, an Aria 6-string than selling ignorance to make money and would you like to be? steel string acoustic electric guitar. I have my grandpa’s old (it doesn’t have a brand name on I would definitely be a philosopher, a writer, and devolve humanity back into hominids, like a lot it) nylon string classical acoustic guitar, I have a a scientist. I think very philosophically, naturally, of the programs do today. They become a part of you, be careful what you store. and it helps me with writing my songs. Not Carvin 4 string bass guitarI have 9 guitars. only do I write songs, but I also write poetry, Do you think some guys find intimidating that philosophies, stories, theories, and hypotheses. 14 Rock N Roll Industries Magazine

When I first heard about Nicole Macias through a friend who had been to a show of hers with an old project in Las Vegas, there was no doubt that she was someone who stood out. Either because of her signature tongue-showing faces, her finger-lickin’ riffs or just her good looks. Well, whatever it is, Nicole is an advocate of talent and prefers to be known for her talent, dedication and hard work rather than looks alone. In an era where many female-fronted bands or solo projects are abundant, How do you stand out from the crowd? We’ll let her do the talking, it may be (or not) what you expected from a “rockin’ gal”.

First and foremost how are you? You have to be tired from all the shows you’ve packed into a summer? I’m actually energized! The more shows I do, the more motivated I become. I get new ideas and a new passion for performing live. I like to constantly change my shows up and that keeps the wheels in my brain constantly turning. I am also surrounded by creative people with new ideas. I’d do a photo shoot, video shoot, build stage props, or record new songs every single day if I could afford to! Your ability to always sound and look amazing...how the Hell do you do it? Hahahahaha. I answered that first question thinking....”He knows better than that”, and now you got me. I get tired occasionally, but it’s never for long. I’m powered by the sun...and my determination to create! You’re a long way from south Dakota, do you miss home?

We started out a “Power Trio” and continue that way to this day. Zach Ballard is our current drummer, he’s been with me for 3 years. He is the current winner of the Evans Drums “Heavyweight Tournament” and is the official Heaviest Hitter in the World. That snare sounds like a gunshot. Benjamin Johnson is our guitarist and is by far the most versatile player I’ve ever worked with. He’s been with me for about a year now. I’m the primary bass player and vocalist for the band, of course. I’ve been the Music City Mayhem “Female Rock Vocalist of the Year” for the last 4 years consecutively. Occasionally, Kevin Bebout (Full Devil Jacket/A New Rebel) takes over the bass for me, which gives me the freedom to just front the band and get crazy. How was your recent trip to Germany?

Recently we were honored by the NIMA Association in Nashville for Best Alternative Rock Band for our latest album “White Noise”. NIMA stands for Nashville Industry Music Association. We were nominated several months ago and it’s fan-voted. It was a complete surprise to me that we won because the bands we were up against are so incredible. I love them all. Our fans really pulled us through on that one, and we are so grateful for their undying support. If we ever make it to the top, it will be completely because they never gave up on us. They believe in us so much, it keeps us going. It always has, and always will.

This was my 2nd trip to Germany, both in support of Warwick’s very unique and successful Bass Camp. For an entire week, students of young and old come together to learn from the “professors”. They bring in some of the greatest bassists in the world like Lee Skylar, Divinity Roxx, and Steve Bailey. They teach everything from technique, to marketing yourself, to learning how to play on different sides of the beat to change the pocket. It’s a student’s dream to learn from these greats. After an entire week of classes, Hans-Peter (Founder of Warwick) throws the biggest party on Saturday that he calls Reeveland Festival. He includes about 10 bands on stage during the day and features 150 famous bass players that he’s personally flown in for meet & greet autograph signings. People show up with pictures they took from last year, or albums, or basses, jackets..... everything for these fabulous players to sign. In the meantime, all 150 of us are treated like kings and queens while be lodged at one of the most beautiful resorts you’ve ever seen and special catering provided twice daily with an elegant dinner party on the evening of the last day. Fantastic food and drinks are followed up by an intense fireworks display that would put most cities in the US to shame on the 4th of July. After my 3 days in Markneukirchen, I went to Berlin, where I got to meet with Napalm Records. They were very welcoming and I’m hoping to work with them on some projects in the future.

What is your current Band lineup?

We finished out our trip in Frankfurt, which is

I miss home sometimes, but I get to visit for about a month at a time during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. I always take a week after the event is over to visit my family on our cattle ranch in Opal, South Dakota. My parents are always happy to see me, and this year I got to see all of my brothers at the same time. It’s fun when we all get together, because we’re all hilarious. Plus, it’s fun to see my mom and dad with a smile on their face. It’s such a peaceful place. You’ve recently won a few awards I heard through the grapevine, how was winning all the awards ?

16 Rock N Roll Industries Magazine

where we flew in and out of. Berlin was the most interesting part of the trip because I got to see all the places my Grandfather talked about while he was stationed there during the war. I could picture him being there. He said even though it was hell at the time, he always loved Germany and always wanted to go back, but never made it back there before he passed away. Now I share his love for Germany as well. You have several videos out now any personal favorite of your Videos? Highway Prophet has been kind of my signature music video, but truthfully I don’t think I’ve made my personal favorite video yet. I think my most important video that I’ve done was for “Fade”. That live footage from Fallujah was intense and it told a story of one Marine. It was a story that took him a long time to be okay to tell. He suffers from PTSD and just couldn’t bring himself to revisit what had happened to his brothers until we did that video. It was important to him and it became his tribute to them. For that reason, it was important to me. It’s the least I can do for someone that fought so hard for me. What is your latest CD? We released our latest album “White Noise” on July 24th of this year, my birthday. What makes it special to me are all the guest appearances on the album including: Charlie Parra (Kobra and the Lotus), Gerry Finn (Killer Dwarfs), Jeff LaBar (Cinderella), and also Ralph Saenz better known as Michael Starr (Steel

Panther). Everyone did an amazing job and the songs are the best yet. I have some really hardcore and long time fans that have every album and even though it’s hard to get them off of that first album “The Inside” because it meant so much to us all, pretty much everyone agrees that this is our best album yet.

What’s next? I’m ready to tour in Europe. I think we would do really well over there. The more time I spend there, the more I’m convinced that we need to get into that market. I’m also looking forward to getting more involved in the festivals here in the US. But as always, I’ll continue to rock the motorcycle events across the country and beyond as long as they’ll have me. I love my brothers and sisters. If you could play with anyone, alive, or passed..who would it be? I’d want to jam once with Dimebag...just because he was such a cool fucking dude. It wouldn’t have mattered what he was playing, it would be fun. He was so full of joy and life and he loved playing music. Plus, he was just hilarious. I’m sure it would’ve been the coolest thing that had ever happened to me. He touched so many people, whether he met them or not. You felt an instant love for him when you saw that smile on his face. Advice for women around the world that want to be like you? I’d say, “Go for it”. I wish people would stop beating each other up over shit and start supporting them. So many people give up because of the shit somebody says to break them down. They listen to it and it gets in their heads and they start to believe it. The truth is, you can be anything you want to be. Set your mind to it, get a plan, and go for it. Don’t let the lobsters drag you back down to the bottom of the bucket. Can you share some dates with our readers? Dates? Like show dates? Or like.... this one time I dated a guy who picked me up wearing a snorkel and ski boots in a thong? All of my show dates are listed on our website at www. jasminecain.com. If you want the stories about snorkel man, you’ll have to wait for my book to come out. -Micheal G Clark

Sascha Konietzko AKA Käpt’n K from KMFDM by Evlin Lake

most of all, loyal fans of any band I’ve ever known or heard of. Thank you !! Tell us about your bandmates? Well, there’s Lucia the cat, she’s been with KMFDM since 2001. I met her and began working with her in 1999, we did MDFMK together and then reformed KMFDM. In 2002, Jules, Andy, and Steve joined the line-up. All three hail from the UK and have been working together for many years before they joined ranks with Lucia and myself. Best friends, best mates, it’s like we’re family. We all used to live together in Seattle and besides making music there was a sheer unbelievable amount of bbq-ing, drinking and partying going on every day of every week in years.

she interested in music? She’s been touring with us since she was born, learned how to walk on a moving turbos. She’s got more than a 100,000 bus miles on her back already, been to 20+ countries in her life so far and is fluid in english and german. She’s very interested in music, has a somewhat eclectic taste and also is a passionate painter, she’s sold several of her pieces at the merch booth during this past tour.

The reason we didn’t join the afterparty, nor hardly any afterparty ever, is that at the end of the day, when the show is over and the crew is loading out of the venue, there’s a short window of time when the bus is empty except for some that are fast asleep. It’s the time of day when our work is done and it’s time to sit down, have a reheated meal of What or who inspired your last album, “Our sorts, a nightcap, pass the events of day revue Time Will Come?” The Salvation EP? and get ready for another hard day of intense work Inspiration happens all by itself and it’s best if you and challenge. It’s not that we don’t appreciate the don’t even think about it, just keep it comin’. It is love our fans extend to us, but after parties tend inspiring to walk through life with your eyes and to deplete ones’ energy further plus the partaking ears peeled, it’s inspiring to read a good book, in more or less substance abuse of sorts after an watch a movie worth watching or even listen to already intense day, does not lend itself to retain the noise in your own head. As with all releases, your stamina day after day. The energy spent durthere’s never a period of gathering thoughts, ing a show equals a massive 2-hour workout and developing concepts and strategies, it all just hap- we have to do 29 shows in a row, all in the span of pens... only 33 days this time around. How did you celebrate KMFDM’s big 30th Anniversary last year? Ready for 30 more years? Ready for whatever may come my way. Didn’t really celebrate per se, just saw it coming and going, now we’re 31.5 years into KMFDM and soon it’ll be another round anniversary, I’m pretty sure. To me it’s not really an achievement to have been active and around for all these years, it’s a call to get better, time and time again, perfect our “art” and anniversaries are merely mile-markers on the highway to wherever. I don’t mean that there’s a goal at the end of the road, the road is the way and as long as I can walk, I’ll be on that path that only ends when the grim reaper decides so.

Anything you’d have done any different? Regrets? Proudest moments? Future plans? No regrets, I’d certainly do everything the same way again. I’ve always weighed decisions carefully and acted as I saw best for KMFDM. The hardest part in the life of KMFDM was to make wise decisions in order to keep KMFDM away from shortlived mainstream success; you know- fly high and crash hard and fast. Avoiding the so- called success and its’ inevitably negative consequences, was always the toughest moments in my “career”. Very early on I decided on a DIY approach and to me, that’s the only way to maintain oneself for long periods of time.

How often do you rehearse? You live in Seattle right now? Do you all live in different states? Is it difficult to get all of you together for rehearsals? We only rehearse for 3-4 days before we head out on tour. Andy lives in Florida, Jules and Steve in Seattle and Lucia and myself are in Germany nowadays. We only see each other during tourseason.

It’s fascinating that KMFDM opened for Ministry for your first American tour. Any stories we haven’t heard yet? There are lots and lots of stories, of course. Let’s just say that the opportunity I was given by Al completely changed my life, it put KMFDM on the map, we suddenly played in front of a ready and hungry audience of tens of thousands, instead of doing shows in stinky squatted houses in front of 10-15 people. The welcome we received in the USA was You married your enchanting wife, and KMFDM so absolute overwhelming and intense, I’ll never keyboardist, Lucia Cifarelli in 2005? Did you forget that! We have 2 or 3 songs so far. With so much time between Anthrax albums, was it difficult to find your groove with the band? You know, it’s pretty easy for me to go through that same process. I am so familiar with it. Me and Jay Ruston (mixing) have an easy rapport together and no tension. We work fast, nice and easy. It is not hard, it’s still so natural.

No. This this will be our third time. We did last years Motorboat and we did one of those ShipRock cruises. They are quite similar, just different boats and different line-ups.

I love N.F.L. football, I love the Minnesota Vikings. I like baseball and hockey, but do not follow it everyday. Football is cool, I can watch it even when I’m playing in the band. When I was young, I saw the Vikings on T.V. , liked them a never stopped. A real fan of the Vikings, I’ve never switched.

Were there any challenges performing on a moving vessel ? You get the swaying a little bit, but its not like Oh My God I can’t do this. It is noticeable, but it did not affect anybody in our clan. Musically it was not a problem, In fact we got around pretty good. The first Motorboat we hit some pretty nasty weather, the wind was extra hot, that kinda fuckin’ sucked! You guys have toured a lot with Slayer over the years. Are they like brothers at this point? We have business ways of being around each other, you know, everybody is content with what they do and how they do it. We travel well together, we get along, and the music fits together. It’s a great bill and we have been doing bigger shows, obviously The Big 4 and stuff. We are all part of the genre, friends, and all grew up touring together. Tell us about your new music. The new stuff is like a fine tuned car, rolling, same look, but got some dif-

Is it true that you are huge fan of Steve Perry of Journey ? Was he an influence on you ? I liked Journey way before Steve Perry came, I loved all that instrumental stuff. Then when Steve came, it was like, Wow, this is cool. That guy is ripping over that stuff. I liked Yes and Kansas. Anything that was fusiony, more riffy rock. I liked most classic rock, like Foreigner, Bad Company, Whitesnake, Zeppelin and Rush. I loved all that bluesy stuff and still do. Are you a fan of any of the newer metal music ? Like Shadows Fall or Killswitch Engage ? Sure. I love all those guys. We have toured together, both of them. I like Sevendust, I am a huge fan- I love their style. As a musician I cannot get enough music. I always listened to everything as a kid. Jethro Tull, Aerosmith and even Joni Mitchell. I listened to a wide range of music. I am still influenced by all that older stuff. I love harmony and melody. I like good jam stuff. -Norco Arthur

Steve “Zetro” Souza

Metal legend, Exodus, released their Tofhrash latest album, “Blood in Blood Out” in October 2014. Fans will recognize a familiar voice

behind the vocals on this album. It’s the first release with returning vocalist, Steve “Zetro” Souza, since 2004’s “Tempo of the Damned”. Released on Nuclear Blast Records. “Blood in Blood Out”, peaked at #38 on Billboard 200 gaining Exodus’s highest chart position. The album has guest appearances by Kirt Hammett of Metallica, Dan the Automator, and Chuck Billy of Testament. As only Exodus can deliver, the entire album is angry, thrashy, rage fueled, in your face, and balls to the wall from the lyrics to the riffs. Our Assistant Editor, Dea Meeks, recently interviewed Zetro to see what he had to say about his return to Exodus and recent Exodus news. Exodus has been around for 30 years and is one of the founding bands of Thrash MetalWhat do you think has made Exodus this successful for this long?

“I think that the band has always stayed hungry. I think that the band has always stayed fresh in the genre. When you’re the innovator of a sound and one of the pioneers, bands always seem to look to you as the ones to find their direction. I don’t think anyone in our genre (Thrash Metal) puts out that material. If you were to go through maybe the top thirteen Thrash bands that you could think of and that goes anywhere from Metallica to Death Angel. I don’t think anyone has put out a bad record. I think that’s why our fans keep coming back. Exodus has released an album that was 22 Rock N Roll Industries Magazine

released October 2014, that was our highest rating since 89. So that just goes to show that the fans are still there. You just gotta deliver and you gotta deliver live and I think our band has always done that.” Let’s talk about the new album “Blood in Blood Out”. It’s the first release with you as the singer since 2004’s “Tempo of the Damned.” I read that you didn’t have a lot of time to get the songs on that record down, how did that feel? I’m always in tune, I always have my voice in tune. So it wasn’t like, Oh shit! I gotta go record this record now. I was ready for it. I’ve been in Exodus and it’s like even when you’re not “in the band” you’re still in the band, you’re always in the band. When people saw me on the street or at a concert they’re like, “Hey! There’s Steve Souza from Exodus.” That’s what I’m known for. The world found out on June 6, 2014 that I was back in. I started recording the new record on the 9th, all I did was cram, I go into a room, I don’t watch TV, I isolate. I have lyrics and I have music and I just keep going over it and over it. I don’t worry about scores on TV, I don’t worry about what’s going on…what I’m gonna eat, I just concentrate on music. That’s basically what I had to do. Being back with Exodus, does it sort of feel like a homecoming? I think that that is a good analogy of that. I think it’s good to say, “He’s home where he’s supposed to be. Also he had a lot to do with why he wasn’t there.” A lot of it was my attitude

and how I carried myself. Who wants to be in a band with a guy who’s miserable? So let’s just say, especially this time, I really appreciate it. I’m very fortunate that the fans and all the people are still behind me and still promote Exodus and love to see the band. We only see the crowds getting bigger and bigger as the band’s getting older which is awesome. I think it’s all working out really well. The mentality of the guys in the band is really well and crew as well. This is the final line-up right here. We’ve even discussed it in extent. Everybody’s full on, I’m 51 years old. This is what I do. Everyone’s come to grips with that and I think it creates a solid atmosphere for us. When you see us live, it’s just (especially with me back in the band) it’s definitely a unified thing. What’s different in this new album than those you have collaborated on with Exodus in the past? Everybody’s musicianship is on a ten scale. I think everyone coming into this record was like, Wow! We’re 30 years into this business. This is our tenth fucking record. We know how to do this. I think what everybody got was everybody in Exodus’s best performance that they have given on any record before. I only wrote one song lyrically on the album, “Body Harvest.” Everything had a good rockin heavy feel to it…just the riffs and music even before the lyrics. It’s in your face, it’s got great hills and valleys on it, but it’s still brutal from top to bottom. You know, I’ve been in Exodus for 30 years, the way you look at it (in or out) I know how to sing against those songs. I know what

exodus

You Can Always Go Home Gary’s writing. I know the lead work. I know the changes. I know where he’s coming from. Tom Hunting was there from the beginning. Lee Altus’s been listening to Exodus since he got to San Francisco from Russia. Jack’s been the longest standing tenured member next to Gary. He’s been in the band since 98 solidly. He’s an awesome Bass player. If you go listen to earlier Exodus records, you don’t hear a lot of Bass on those albums. And now you hear it…God, Jack rumbles right through it. It’s a good blend of everybody’s best musicianship on anything they’ve ever done (in my eyes). How did it feel working on “Fabulous Disaster” which gained the bands attention from major record labels? That one came fast, “Bonded” in 85. Then the band hit a record label snag there. They were on a label called Torrid. Torrid didn’t have the money to put out the next record that Exodus wanted to do because “Bonded by Blood” was so successful. Labels didn’t want to take that on. So they wrote a record that stayed stagnant. Here comes a new singer in June of 86, it’s like, ‘Wait a minute! What the fuck are these guys doing?!’ The album doesn’t come out until almost a whole other year almost in 87. Then we did the tour for Pleasures, by the time we got into Fabulous it was like, ‘Oh! We gotta go to work!’ I remember coming home from Pleasures of the Flesh, we were home for two weeks then we scheduled practices for ourselves, every day they started at 11AM and they went to like 5 or 6. We worked like you worked a job. We worked on Saturday,

but we took Sunday off. We basically wrote the record in June, July, and August of 88, we actually went there every day. When we wrote “Toxic Waltz”, Gary had the rhythm down and all that. You know how like 50’s dance parody songs use to say what you do? I played off of that. All I did was write these lyrics like that… it was a joke! So I brought them to practice and Gary looks at me and goes, “Dude! These are brilliant!” “Toxic Waltz” is Exodus’s biggest fucking thing and it was made by an accident. Nobody got my joke. We play “Toxic Waltz” and “Bonded by Blood” every night, it’s just part of it. Tell me about the upcoming cruise, Motorhead’s Motorboat that you guys are a part of. “We leave on the 27th of September, for 5 days leaving from Miami going to Nassau in the Bahamas. Shit, it’s Anthrax, Slayer, Motorhead, Corrosion of Conformity, Hatebreed, Suicidal Tendencies, Kyng, Fire Ball Ministry, Motor Sister, and Phil Campbell’s All Starrs. There’s a tons of bands on there, man! If you wanted to get next to your heroes, especially if you’re into really the 80s Thrash, there’s great bands on this one . There’s Suicidal, Exodus, Anthrax, Slayer…that’s like you’re talking The Big Four right there, very very good cruise.” Tell me about the upcoming tour with King Diamond. We’re home (after the cruise) for 3 and half weeks and then we start in Denver on the 27th of October with King Diamond. That tour is

going to be a blast. I love King Diamond. I love Mercyful Fate. To be six weeks with the King is gonna be great. You’ve been a part of other amazing bands outside of Exodus, how does it feel to get up stage and see a huge crowd of generations of Thrash Metal fans head banging and being entertained by you? The crowd has changed, there’s new fans there. I see 17, 18, 22, 23 year olds. We were just in Europe. The show in Moscow, I swear there was nobody over 21 or 22…a couple of people…for the most part the crowd was a younger crowd, I love it. That’s why I keep doing it. The fans drive it. Is there anything that you’d like to tell your fans? They know that I thank them in every interview especially when I’m given the forum to do so. They’re the reason we are alive in 2015. The reason we’ve been able to have the longevity of 30 years as a band and as a (I guess) very famous legendary Heavy Metal band…whatever they write and I read. It’s very hard to look at yourself as that, Jesse James is a legend, right? Isn’t Billy the Kid a legend? How the hell am I a legend? We are very, very fortunate and it’s the fans that have made it all possible and people like yourself (the press) that are still hungry for the answer so, thank you as well. -Dea Meeks

How is it going Eddie? Edddie: Hola, not much. Just writing some tunes and trying to change the world You guys are working on the new album as far as I know. When are you aiming at sharing that with us? Eddie: We’re trying to be in the Studio October-

24 Rock N Roll Industries Magazine

November. We’re just trying to get a good release date and trying to get everyone excited and write some good music so everyone can snap to and open their eyes to Kyng. Are you guys excited about jumping on board on this year’s Motorboat? Eddie: (Sarcastic) Not really, not excited. (sarcastic) You may be sharing the stage with some decent bands. I think some band by the name of Kyng is playing, you guys might be overshadowed. Eddie: Who are they? I’m not sure. The headliners? Eddie: I doubt it, that name is on the last names. Ha ha ha ha. No, seriously, we are super stoked to be in it. We wanted to be there last year, but things didn’t go as planned, but we are happy. Pepe: (In the background) Also playing, Motorhead, Slayer, Exodus, Suicidal Tendencies... Eddie: Yeah, all those great bands. Are you guys Motorhead fans? Jump in just in case Lemmy isn’t feelin’ well?

Eddie: I guess any of just can just at least play “Ace of Spades” Who are you the most excited to share the stage with? Eddie: Corrosion of Conformity and of course Slayer. Ever played together? Or you guys play the main stage and they play the second stage? ( ha ha) Eddie: We usually play the parking lots hoping someone will check us out. We just plug into the generator and jam, ha ha! Fireball Ministry, Crobot, all those dudes, all our buds. I mean, that’s the bonus of jammin’ but the best is to get to see all our buddies. Do you guys have an idea of how many tracks you will have for the next album. Eddie: Right now we are just writing and writing and writing and we have about 5 great ideas and aiming at having at least 15 songs and see if get into the studio with 13 different tracks. It’s just been so grueling. Pepe moved back to Mexico with his family, Tony doesn’t really live close to the studio so we just need to work as a well-oiled machine and be close knit.

urn The Serum” was one of the most wellreceived albums of 2014, the trio known as KYNG is responsible for such a good album. If you have not heard of this band, you have probably been living under a rock, heck, probably not even in this planet. Many will “label” this band as one of the most exciting and “revivalists” of hard rock and metal notes. If you know about them then you have read the comparisons. Even I have my take on that on how their sounds reminds me of certain old-school bands, I always wanted to say that, but I don’t want to focus on who they sound like, rather, I would like to share why this band is one heck of a trio, amazingly proving that great music can be created with just the three basic rock n roll instruments. With a new follow up album in the works and with Kyng’s participation in the 2015 edition of Motorboat, I cannot wait to see what new material they have to share with us next year.

Isn’t a good thing that you don’t see each other as often so when you see each other you are happy to see each other? Eddie: Not in this working scenario; not when making an album, especially with the time crunch- that limited time frame. It’s not the same to send each other ideas through email, it’s not the same magic. You want to be in the studio with the dudes and if an idea pops up we just jammed. Maybe after studio time if they ask me “Hey, let’s go have lunch” I’m like “nah, see ya later”.

Tony: The list is endless and at times it’s just who pops in your mind at the moment. David Bowie, like Eddie said, Black Sabbath is a huge influence for all of us. Pantera, Megadeth, I like Queens Of The Stone Age as well. Is there a specific moment or band that you have been or were super excited to share the stage with? Tony: For me, definitely Megadeth. To tour with one of your favorite bands and now him (Dave Muscatine) being our fan is amazing.

How about your gear? What are your weapons of choice?

Did you teach him a couple of words yourself?

Eddie: I’m a Dean player, Superchargers, Orange amps with Mesa Boogie heads.

Tony: I call him “Sir”, he calls me “Gardener” Ha ha.

How about you Tony? I bet you usually don’t get a lot of mic time. I bet Eddie hogs all the action. Do you like the mic and interviews or dread them?

Let’s turn the mic over here to introduce last, but not least... What do you call the guys that hang out with the band?

Tony: Yeah, well, not sure if I like the mic, but it’s cool to do interviews. Kinda used to them. Sometimes I go off the rail and ramble. I just saw you guys on tour with Papa Roach. How did such travels treat you? Tony: Every tour is memorable and different, but this last one was the first time we got to tour the US in a tour bus, not a van, that was cool. Same question for you, Who are some of your musical influences?

Eddie: (In the background) An asshole!!! They usually call them the drummer. Ha ha, Right? Excited for Motorboat?

it, but looking into fixing the situation. Certain circumstances took me there so I am working on it. The obvious question: Your influences growing up? Pepe: Metallica, the one I listened the most probably. Plus the ones they already mentioned. I was mostly influenced by trash metal. Then as I started growing older I got into Sabbath, Corrosion of Conformity, Zeppelin, I started getting more into rock. I remember this one pic that James Hetfield took with his phone or was it Jose’s (Mangin)? And they’re taking a “Selfie” and you guys are in the back playing Orion fest. Metallica, Jose and you guys. How did you meet Mr. Mangin. I know he’s a good friend of yours and a great supporter of your band. Pepe: Tony and I used to play in a band called Ankla and Jose was a fan. After a radio interview Tony and him stayed in touch and then every time we went to the NY area we stayed at his house. He’s been a great supporter, probably the biggest one.

Pepe: I am more excited than them (Tony begins doing Jumping Jacks and makes Pepe laugh). The process has been reeling since last year, really good and excited about this one.

What about your gear?

How is the tedious traveling between Ciudad Juarez (Mex) and LA?

Well, stay tuned for more news on the mighty KYNG, catch them on Motorboat and Knotfest this year, plus their anticipated album release next year! Peace! -Enrique Nunez

Pepe: It’s horrible! It’s a 14 hr bus ride, I hate

Pepe: Meinl cymbals, DDrum Drums, ProMark sticks, Trick Pedals.

ey, how’s it going? Welcome to L.A. guys, Hishing bet you guys are sad and happy to be finthe tour on this beautiful club Nokia. So, how are you guys doing?

Archie- Doin’ great, dude. I’m Archie, I’m the lead singer and guitar player. I know you guys are finishing, today, this tour. How is it treating you? A: It’s been awesome, man. We’re all over the States, and you know, this venue is awesome, all the old amphitheaters where we’ve played are beautiful, and we got a lot of fans here and a good crowd, it’s just been awesome, you know, see around San Francisco and Las Vegas, all those places.

Santa Cruz. It was fitting and as soon as I met him (Johnny) I told him, ‘Dude, our band needs to be called Santa Cruz’, and here we are.

got some, fresh sounds to it, as well. It’s like, “Slave to the Grind”, you know Skid Row’s first. It’s heavier and it’s more aggressive.

So, you guys have a couple of albums under the belt, What’s next for Santa Cruz?

How old were you guys when you picked up your first instrument? When you first got your first guitar?

J: I think a shitload of touring, hopefully be again in the States in fall, then probably do like a headline tour next year, probably release a new single. Let’s see what happens.

J: I used to play, piano first. I played trumpet and then I got my first guitar when I was seven and I fell in love. I play the drums a lot, as well.

A: We don’t want to jack any stress for that ‘cause we don’t want to work on the songs, and you know, play them with the boys, before we could record them. So, we will just, you know, take it easy on that, but we are going to tour a lot, now.

So now you got competition, who takes the drums? A drum off today on stage...

You guys are going to be pretty busy. I know, a lot of, I would say, magazines and other outlets, consider you guys like a comeback of the ‘80s, is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Do you guys ever mess around with each other’s instruments or gear, play pranks? What keeps you sane on the road?

Johnny: (Sarcastic) We were NOT in a bar, yesterday.

A: To me, it’s a great thing. Why not? I don’t want people to think of us as a retro band, but, you know, ‘80s had all the best bands and of the best, you know, good times. So, that is fucking great.

A: No, hell no. Totally not, but the instruments are no-go: it’s like your hair, you don’t touch the fucking hair or the guitars.

A: No. We did NOT get drunk and I definitely did NOT puke all over the floor.

What would be some of those major bands that influenced you growing up?

Make sure you check out Santa Cruz; they’ll be back soon because L.A. loves them, California loves them, and you guys have to come to Santa Cruz.

You did not puke on anyone? Good job! (laughing)

J: Skid Row, Guns N Roses, Motley Crue.

We’ll be back. Stay cute, bitches.

A: Guitar- Van Halen, Motley, Guns, Def Leppard, Ozzy Osbourne, Zakk Wylde and all those made me want to play guitar.... All the best that have balls, you know. The things that are missing today in rock’s music.

E: Make sure you check them out. What’s the official website?

To any of our readers and friends in Santa Cruz, make sure you guys welcome “Santa Cruz” there, and maybe some introduce them to some cool bars. Do you guys like hanging out at bars? What would you guys like to do? A: (sarcastic) No, we never hang at bars.

So, how did you guys start the band? How were you guys inspired? I mean we all kind of know where the name came from (City of Santa Cruz, California); but tell us how you chose the name. A: Yea, you know, the sound to it. It sounded cool, and you know and good times of the name 26 Rock N Roll Industries Magazine

So tell us about your new record. A: Yea, the new album, is a bit more heavy. It’s

A: We always do that. Whenever our drummer goes take a shit, we’re like running to the drum set- who gets there first.

J: Drinking!!!

No Words

How old were you when you started playing and what made you want to play guitar? Nik- I was 9 years old when I started to play the guitar, and nothing in particular made me want to play the guitar. I just saw a guitar one day and thought it would be cool to try out. Tell us what it was like to travel to Germany and play Wacken? Nik-Waken Open Air Festival was the most amazing experience I have had, playing was incredible! We got an encore in German and didn’t even know it. Shane-Germany is beautiful and inspiring. The people are passionate and open minded, as are the fans. Our welcoming was surreal and the show was engaging, energetic, and truly symbolic. The crowd responded loudly and positively. To see the authenticity in the vast group of metal fans was incredible and reaffirmed my love for the genre. Tony-Germany was pretty mind blowing. I’ve never traveled to Europe before, I’ve never had anyone pay for me to to travel, and I’ve never played in front of more than a couple hundred people. I knocked all those birds out in one trip. Wacken was messy, loud and full of energy! I found a new piece of me out there and I’ll never forget what it was like to stare at an ocean of people as I performed with every thing that I had. Drew-Germany was truly amazing. It was my first time in Europe and I couldn’t think of a more fitting debut a.k.a lose my musical European virginity than by serenading and making sweet metal love to the crazy awesome crowd at Wacken Festival. All the fans were so energetic and showed nothing but love for us. I can’t wait to do it all over again. You have a new album coming that you’re currently in the studio with, tell us a little about the process? Nik you’re doing more then playing right? Nik-The process of recording an album is easy, it’s just time consuming. I engineer all the recordings. From vocals to guitars, bass, drums, etc. But like I said previously, it can take a while to write/record a full length and make it perfect to the bands ears. Tell us what brands you play? Nik-I play Gibson/Epiphone guitars, Marshall amplification, EMG pickups, Dunlop strings, Dunlop picks, Dunlop pedals. Aleks- Epiphone, Ampeg, Dunlop, & Dean Markley strings Drew-Westone In Ears Monitors Is this the first time you are going on a cruise? Are you excited to play the motorhead motorboat? Which bands on the motorboat are you the most excited about seeing/playing with? Nik-This is the first cruise I will be attending. I’m very excited to play the Motörboat! I’m excited to play with Slayer, Motörhead and all the other bands on the boat to be honest. To have the invitation to play this is honoring.

Shane-Motorboat is an absolute staple and I am blessed to be able to play and share the stage with the performing legendary talent. Motörhead and the other featured headliners are all bands that have inspired me in the metal genre for years and I am anxiously awaiting the opportunity to watch them all. Aleks- yeah this is my first cruise, so I don’t really know what to expect. It’s gonna be wild though! I’m stoked & extremely grateful to be a part of Motorboat. I mean I grew up listening to all these guys, so to be able to share the stage with them is just like a dream. Tony-I’m beyond excited about MotorBöat! This is my first legit American debut! It’s time to show the world what we can do and what we’re all about! I am super stoked to see every single band because to me, they’re all idols. I just love watching other bands who have been where I’ve been and gone further than I could have ever imagined and knowing I’m gonna be right there rocking the same stage as them. It’s all truly a blessing. Drew-This will be my first time on a floating death trap. I’m most excited about being in international waters because I need to take care of some business that’s not exactly legal in America. It will be an honor to play with such legendary bands. I’m excited to be apart of it and can’t wait to play. Who inspires you? Nik-I have different inspirations for different aspects of music, but to stay in a general area. Synyster Gates, Randy Rhoads, Dimebag Darrell, etc.. Were do you see the band in 5 years? Nik-Hopefully playing around the world, selling out shows. Recording more records. Shane-I see the band providing an influential role to other up and coming bands as they become excited to share the stage with us. Aleks- I see us doing the same thing we’ve been doing, kicking ass, doing what we love no matter what the world has to throw at us Tony-I think we will all be in prison or rehab! Hahah, just kidding. It’s hard to say where this band could be in 5 months let alone 5 years. But I do have high hopes we will be in your face, loud as fuck, making a difference and changing the world in some badass ways! Music has always helped me through some crazy shit and if our music could wake up someone else’s soul to go out there and never give up and truly kick ass, then I’d be happy. Drew-I see us with a couple successful albums under our belts and on huge world tours with our favorite bands. Unfortunately, I will be watching all this from beyond the grave because I will more than likely be super dead in 5 years. I’m guessing from massive heart failure or from being viscously beaten to death by a pack of third graders. What I’m doing around a pack of third graders I have no idea. Who knows what my future self will do, only time will tell. Nik what do you want to tell young musicians? Nik-Just to keep at music if this is what you truly want. Stay dedicated and remember the “Secret” lies within itself. Rock N Roll Industries Magazine 27

huntress ou looked and sounded amazing at Loaded in Hollywood along with Holy Grail and Art of Shock, how was your first show after Yyour surgery?

They can expect to have their minds blown! Our last video “Zenith” was directed by Phil Mucci. He’s an artistic genius. We put so much time and money into “Sorrow,” it will be part of our legacy forever.

Thanks! The show at Loaded was fun, the band is tighter than ever and my voice is the strongest it’s ever been live. I can’t just stand in one place and sing, I’m very active during performances. My doctor’s wanted me to wait, but I needed to get on that stage. Of course, they were right and I do need more time to heal from a hysterectomy. I’m now cancer-free and ready for full beast mode again.

What was it like working with Producer Paul Fig?

I was told you can do back flips…. Hollywood rumor? Or truth?

You grew up in the theater singing Opera, which explains your strong, pitch prefect, voice and brilliant costumes, do you hope for bigger, better outfits and stage design in the future?

Ha! Yes, I can do back flips. What motivated me to learn was the movie Batman Returns and the way Catwoman would do all these crazy stunts. I was obsessed with Michelle Pfeiffer in high school, I even made a Catwoman body suit and would run around my small town at night, doing back flips down Main Street in the snow. Obviously there wasn’t much to do in Oneonta, NY in the winter.

That is the goal, more elaborate, over the top stage design. I’m a theatre nerd, and I can’t shed it. So I embrace it. I’d love to work with an incredible modern designer who wants to create spectacular costumes with me.

Is it a tradition for you to motorboat a chick? How does one go about getting this part?

I was also told you are a MAC makeup user…. Hollywood Rumour? Or Truth?

When women stand in the front row of a Huntress show and have big breasts, I cannot focus! I’m like a horny dude when it comes to big ol’ titties. I started jumping off stage to motorboat these fan girls. I guess I’m a natural at it.

Truth! I’ve had a partnership with MAC Cosmetics since 2009. It’s the only make-up I wear.

Your new album “Static” came out September 25 on Napalm Records and you’ve been working on the music video for “Sorrow”, what can your fans expect?

I want to be King Diamond for a day! His vocals are so unique, and I feel I could do him justice.

th

Who’s shoes would you fill for a day and why?

Miranda Panda

Paul Fig is the calmest and most focused producer/engineer I’ve worked with. He and Jim Rota as co-producers put their heart and soul into Static. It’s so important for me to work with level, solid, somewhat unemotional men because I’m a maniac.

You funded the video “Eight of Swords” because of a Tarot card reading you did and this was the song that got you signed; have the rest of the band started practicing witchcraft? The band tolerates my weird occult ways. I’ve made them see things they can’t deny, real magic. They just let me do my thing and support it. Obviously we’ve had some success because of witchcraft. Other than yourself are there any woman in rock that you feel are making waves? I often talk about wanting to abolish the stigma of female fronted bands, I’m not here to change the world, I can only live for my purpose. But I do strive to “unsex” my voice. I have always been inspired by Ann Wilson of Heart, but I’m not really a fan of female musicians. Even I annoy myself! So many people are fighting every day, what advice can you give to someone who feels alone and where do you recommend finding help. I’m still figuring it out! I’ve got my tricks, but what works for me is being on medication, exercising and staying sober. I’m not a purist; I enjoy a shot of Jägermeister after shows and smoke weed for anxiety. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has also been a good way to cope. Finding help has never been easy for me, especially without health insurance for many years. Now there are many online resources. 1-800-SUICIDE is a good source to find help too. Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead wrote the lyrics to “I Want To Fuck You To Death”, he’s such a charming man. How did this collabora-

tion come about? Lemmy is a dear friend. I asked him if he’d write me lyrics for a Huntress song while we were having drinks at the Rainbow. Two weeks later we met up at his recording studio in Hollywood and he handed me two pieces of notebook paper with the lyrics to “I Want To Fuck You To Death.” He’s so romantic! Tell me how great it is to be part of the Jager family? It is awesome! The Jäger Music family is so much fun and truly supports their bands. We’ve been partnered with Jägermeister since 2012 and every year it brings more opportunities. How much fun did you have on tour with Amon Amarth, didn’t you get to pretend to be Johan Hegg for a night? I did cover for Johan in Plymouth, England when he blew out his voice. I hosted the show with the rest of the band and I was kinda worried a bunch of angry viking metal fans would kill me on stage. But they loved it and we had a blast! It was a magical night. You have spent a lot of time across the pond, you played my Mother’s hometown in England and more importantly Download festival, I know Europeans love metal! How are you treated and do you have future tour plans for there or here in the US? Europe and the UK are very important to Huntress. We’ve built a solid fan base over there and will continue to tour overseas as much as possible. More coming in 2016! -Miranda Panda

ecent concerns have risen about Lemmy's health. It is no secret that he has been a constant rock n' roll machine active for the last 50 years. Fans have posted their concern all over social media, good and bad comments. I would like to stick with the supportive ones because only God and Lemmy himself know what he has been enduring all these years of activity and certain tastes for the pleasures of the flesh, with that I mean, alcohol and cigarettes. A lung infection was diagnosed and has been taken care of. Promising to finish the tour and jump straight into Motorboat, Motorhead is assuring us they are here to finish what they started. With 40 years of rocking our faces with his band and 22 albums later. How do you introduce the inspiration and legend to the legends? How do you make justice to the power of the 4 strings? Last time I checked I was in my living room, but we must definitely be at Mount Olympus, because it is said that Lemmy is GOD! Are you ready for this second edition of Motorboat? Is this like the Disneyland cruise of Rock and Metal for metal heads? I like to call it rock n roll, yeah. We usually get judged or labeled by the long hair, but I don’t like to do that. Just like last year, the 2015 edition has an amazing lineup. My buddy Pepe Clarke from KYNG said he was pretty excited about joining this year’s Motorboat. Specially sharing the stage with you and Slayer and also seeing their friends Crobot and Fireball Ministry. Now, everyone and their mommas were talking about last years cruise. Will this year be any crazier? Will there be enough booze? Kerry King said he would be in charge this time and make sure there is enough.

I know you are all kinds of busy and getting ready for the release of “Black Magic”, I still wonder how you manage to juggle with all these duties. How do you feel about this album?

Ha ha ha! Yes, last time we ran out, I gotta make sure this doesn’t happen again, believe me.

Who influenced Lemmy as a young man? Everybody... you know. Everybody I’ve ever heard, because even if they didn’t influence me to play that way, they still influenced me.

32 Rock N Roll Industries Magazine

There’s a long list of my favorite performers like Mertallica, Slash, Steve Vai, etc., etc., all these “legends”, you are a legend yourself, that consider you one of their major influences. How does that feel? It’s nice when people say that, I don’t always consider myself an influence, I don’t necessarily hear it in their playing but I guess they do what they like and are just themselves. It’s good to have friends like that and guests in your music productions or else it gets old, you know.

What are Lemmy’s essentials? Cigs? Jack? My favorite is sleep a lot! I’m old! It gets more difficult as you get old. I go out here and there. Not much as I used to. It is well known that you did some roadwork for Jimmy Hendrix and other bands. Did that strike a need to pursue a music career? It inspired me to give up guitar and pick up the bass. Ha ha

Alex Kluft

(Chuckles) Fantastic! I bet you were expecting me to tell you that, but I feel proud of it myself. Brian May collaborates in one song and we have a “Sympathy for the devil” cover. We’ll play a couple of the new songs during the cruise.

Other than “Ace of Spades” what other song would you like to be known or remembered for? Is there another specific album or song you really feel super proud of composing? I’m very proud of Ace of Spades. We are lucky we got a good song and opened many doors. I’m guessing this is a popular “fan” question. In the movie “Airheads”, which is one of my favorite mov-

ies, you have a short cameo and state “I was editor of the school magazine!”. I’ve always wondered, were you involved in any school clubs or activities? No I wasn’t, those were not around in my time. We had no such activities at my school. Those were different times. People say: “Do you have any advice for young bands?” And I say “No” because we have different experiences and the times are different.

How did winning a Grammy performing a Metallica song process in your brain? One of the bands you influenced helped you score it, per se. What did they say? Did you get feedback? Not for that one, not much. I feel much more happy remembering when they played my birthday at the Roxy and they played for like 45 mins, all Motorhead songs. They wore the wigs, shades, etc.

What do you like to do in your spare time? If you have any... What spare time? I’m always on the go. From one thing to another. I don’t have time to spare. I don’t really like spare time. If I do, I just tend to lie on the couch. What is it about the “Rainbow Bar” you like so much? I’ve seen you there a few times and it is well known it is almost like a second home to you. You cannot think of the Rainbow without Lemmy. It’s just down the street for me, you see, It’s my local bar. I go there quite often, watch a game on the screen. What’s your favorite thing there? I would like to play China, India and Africa. If this was your last interview, do you feel you have something else to accomplish? I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve done, we’ve had a good chart positioning over the years. Well, next time I see you at the bow, I will definitely need to have a shot and a cigarette with you. It’s an item in my bucket list.

Please remind me of such next time you see me there.

Thank you Lemmy for your time and your art. Have fun at Motorboat and congrats on the release of the new album. We’re looking forward to it and please... make sure there’s enough booze! (Lemmy bursts in laughter). You got it, thank you. -Enrique Nunez

LOG kicks it off with the sizzling hot “Walk with Me In Hell.” This is the DVD title track. Over 20 years of history are represented in this tour without pretentiousness or commercialism. Randy Blythe loves Toronto and the rest of Canada for being the first and only country to award the band with 2 gold records. The founders keep the backline real. John Campbell – bass guitar, Chris Adler – drums, solidify the foundation. Mark Morton too, save for the short “Master’s Degree” break in the action. Willie Adler is obviously at home with his role on rhythm guitar since the band changed from “Burn The Priest” to “Lamb of God” in 1999.

The set-list spanned through the years with “Now You’ve Got Something To Die For”, Lamb of God kicks ass and hypnotizes. Fans feel their messages of anti-fear, hate, power, abuse and ruin. Anti-war movies and memorials for the fallen, were moving. So, if you’re easily brainwashed, you’ll need something mind-numbing. Alternate solution: MOSH! Slash said, “Lamb of God is not a house-

hold name...but they’re one of the biggest heavy metal bands around” in Lamb of God’s documentary: As The Palaces Burn. Into the beef of their set LoG thrashes through “Still Echoes” and “512”. “Ghost Walking” was marked by Mark Morton’s heavy mental guitar solo. By this time the waves of moshers were of Tsunami proportion. Wild cheers as “Ruin” begins and the mad excitement continues for “Hourglass” and the iTunes bonus track “Vigil”. “Laid To Rest” with sizzling energy highlighted by the highly relevant Randy, pouncing off the drum riser into the thick, hot air. Soaking wet head shakes frozen in time; momentum tearing into the encore, Blythe belted out comments about us all, at times resembling the fan favorite, “Redneck”. For those that have never experienced Slipknot, it’s a phenomenon similar to your worst nightmare set to powerful progressive polyrhythms with a heaping helping of pyrotechnical pollution. Take KISS, Black Sabbath, NIN and throw them in a dumpster for a couple of weeks. Then take what emerges and force it to work in a quarry in the desert. Killpop is their latest release and the video already has 8 million views on YouTube. Survival in a suicidal psycho-social scene detonates and dives behind oil drums at curtain call. There’s no time to waste. The directive in “XIX” solidifies this status as the premier occult cult. “Walk with me - Don’t let this symbolism kill your heart”. This tour is in support of “The Gray Chapter” as the show begins with the releases intro and opening number. Logically, leading into sicker songs like “Sarcastrophe”, “The Heretic Anthem” and the infamous “Psychosocial”, the engine starts to glow. Charismatic Corey Taylor crushes the crowd ego immediately. The mob does not rule; this man does. His disguise is a disfigured neoFrankenstein in a mechanic’s monkey suit. He commands the massive stage circus. and the menagerie of maggot lovers. Meanwhile down below the mosh pit gets intense. There’s no more Joey Jordison drum solo on an elevating pivot of a pentacle and no more Gray on bass but “.5: The Gray Chapter” is now open at page one. Where do they go from here? Six years since “All Hope Is Gone” and obviously grieving; Perhaps regressing into a collective state of existence drawn from a history that included these life forces, some say the new music sounds like earlier iterations. “The Devil in I” and “AOV,” perhaps paying homage to the lost. The controversial “Frail Limb Nursery/ Purity” is played next and then songs, old and new that use melodic choruses: “Wait and Bleed,” “Killpop,” “Before I Forget,” “The Blister Exists,” and “Duality.” On cherry-picker industrial percussion platforms decorated with severed ram heads, Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan looms ominous - master of all maggots below - opposite Chris Fehn “#3” onwards and upwards. Sid Wilson, “Ratboy, DJ Starscream, #0” and Craig Jones aka “133 (or 133 MHz), The Silent One, The Killer, #5,” on keys and these 4 round out the purgatory part of the stage neither at the top

or bottom but altering their level by industrial hydraulics, gravity or sheer climbing strength. The dangers are real as a couple of heels have been broken while jumping in the past. Only a few days prior to this tour crashing the Amphitheatre party, Alex’s health forced him off this hell’s kitchenesque stage and day by day worked his way back into the glowing ember limelight. “Alessandro Venturella - FANS” (Facebook page) Corey Taylor wrote, “We are very, very happy to say Alex is not onstage, but he’s back, behind the fuckin’ set.” Well, he was back for the whole 17 song 100 minute shebang, sharing the floor of the stage with Jim Root “#4” and Mick Thomson “seven” on guitars. Corey talked a lot about the connection between himself; his band; the fans; and the strangers around us all. He called everyone his family and each other’s family. It’s a metal family. It can be said that this sentiment is a product of pain. The authenticity is there. This band from Des Moines, Iowa, will be celebrating their 20th anniversary in September. After “The Negative One” Taylor bisects the crowd with the question of

who has been to a Slipknot show before. Of course, a mass of maggot cheers rise to deafening levels. The subsequent question for those experiencing the freak show for the first time created a similar din, but indicated substantially less newbies than experienced maggots. Every freaky fan went wild for “Spit It Out” especially after waiting on the ground for the command to “Jump the fuck up!” Then, once again, the old sound emerges in the new song “Custer”; “Listener Aggression Is Advised”. It’s not just the mosh pit on their feet and banging bodies. The whole amphitheater is shaking. Slipknot was faced with the fact that their previous recording “All Hope Is Gone,” was their most influential work. It carried them to the top Genius and self-fulfilling prophecy. How do you follow your best? “.5: The Gray Chapter” is under the influence of absent creative contributors from the earlier releases: “Iowa” and “Vol.3: (The Subliminal Verses)” most notably. And you follow greatness with greatness. Just the way the encore follows that sick show: “742617000027,” “(sic),” “People = Shit,” “Surfacing.” The finale is the emotional “’Til We Die.” ...Carry on... b!||yzee

ast night was a sad night in Hollywood for Steel Panther fans as it was the band’s last show to play the legendary venue on Sunset. Before House Of Blues Steel Panther was known as Metal Skool playing the Key Club which is now a 1OAK. Over a year ago it was announced the House Of Blues would be torn down for a hotel and the venue would relocate, however there is no new location yet for the House Of Blues. Steel Panther had played every Monday night until going on a world tour and these last 3 weeks they played their final shows at the House Of Blues. As always the band had to make fun of what was around them and Satchel made a few references about “Bulldozing it down,” to bring light about a venue we will miss. Satchel also joked about playing until 6 A.M. and free alcohol for everyone. The opener was their classic song “Eyes of The Panther,” which they usually opened House of Blues shows up with. All three of these shows sold out quickly. Steel Panther may very well be the last residency band of the last decade on the Sunset Strip to have reached the success they have from playing small clubs weekly to major music festivals in the UK and Europe. Of course the crowd knew every song as there’s usually many regulars there. There were no special guests for this show, but they did throw 2 covers in which were the Scorpions “Rock You Like A Hurricane,” and their infamous rendition of Whitesnake’s “Hear I Go Again,” adding parts of “The Joker,” (Steve Miller), “All Star,” (Smash Mouth) “Beverly Hills,” and “Sweater Song” (Weezer), and saying how those songs ripped off Whitesnake as Satchel played the same chords. For a song the band brought up anyone in the audience

who had been in their music videos. “Party All Day,” was the song they brought girls up on stage to take their tops off which is a Steel Panther tradition. Steel Panther brought their stage antics, vulgarness, humor, solos, and kick ass heavy metal. For “Community Property,” the audience sang the first verse. The final song was “Death To All But Metal,” which was the perfect song to close with. Well it was definitely a historic night as Steel Panther’s final House of Blues Sunset show, and what is possibly the last rock show there as well. Steel Panther is here to stay and hopefully will find a new home soon since for the last decade, people have come out weekly over and over again to see them, and their even become a tourist attraction for people visiting Hollywood. -Alex Kluft Setlist

at HOB Sunset

To celebrate the House of Blues in Los Angeles before It closes, a week of farewell concerts including 2 nights of Social Distortion and Anthrax took place. And to play the final metal show there Anthrax was the perfect choice. Anthrax’s 2 hour show consisted of songs spanning their 30+ career with fan favorites and throw backs that hadn’t been performed in over 10 years. At 9 P.M. Anthrax took the stage to a wild crowd. They practically tore the place down with their music and the crowd behavior. The opening song was “A.I.R.” followed by “Lone Justice,” which had not been performed in 10 years. When “Madhouse,” followed the House Of Blues, became a madhouse with all the moshing and crowd surfers. Even a Stormtroopers of Death song was thrown in. “Across The River,” was performed for the first time since 1989. Anthrax played all the classics like “Caught in a Mosh,” “Indians,” “Among The Living,” “Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.), and Ronnie James Dio led Black Sabbath “Neon Knights.” The biggest surprise was that Anthrax played “I’m The Man,” which rarely gets played live. Best of all Public Enemy’s Chuck D. came out for “Bring The Noize.” This metal show was the real deal where the audience was engaged the whole time. Scott Ian (Rhythm Guitar), Frank Bello (Bass), Joey Belladonna (Vocals), Charlie Benante (Drums), and Jon Donais (Guitar) all rocked the House of Blues one last time. -Alex Kluft

Review and photos by Miranda Panda I lived in Alaska for ten years and had the pleasure of getting to know local band 36 Crazyfists, named after the Jackie Chan movie “Jackie Chan and the 36 Crazy Fists”, they are an Alterative metal band. The band formed in 1994 after local musicians came together for a benefit show for Duana Monsen a local drummer who was murdered after a show at a venue in Anchorage, AK. He was 27 years old and all the boys grew up together. Singer Brock Lindow, guitar player Steve Holt, drummer Thomas Noonan and bass player JD Stuart felt they were a great fit and went for it! They released the first EP “Boss Buckle” in 95 on cassette. Unfortunately in June of 96 tragedy struck the band when JD died in a car collision, he was only 23 years old, he had amazing showmanship and will always be missed. The remaining members found Mick Whitney to continue on bass and relocated to Seattle, releasing seven studio albums including “Rest Inside the Flames,” which was released across Europe in 2006 debuting at

No.7 on the UK album charts and reached No.2 on the BBC’s rock album chart, also selling 1,858 copies in the US in the first week of release. Thomas Noonan left the band in 2012 and was replaced by drummer Kyle Baltus, 36CF has a current album called “Time and Trauma” by Spinefarm Records. Since moving to Cali I have missed Alaska and was excited to hear local band 36 Crazyfists scheduled to play at The Whiskey A Go Go on Sunset Blvd, CA. Being a part of the music scene in the AK I have gotten to seen 36CF many times, they headline Meltdown festival (AK Soul Productions) and the best Halloween party ever, ZombieFest (AK Soul Productions) hosted by KWHL 106.5fm. However to see them again was brilliant! A few Alaskan fans came out and it felt like home. They always put on a face melting show and bring the metal in full force. Kyle is somewhat new to 36CF, he has been around the band for years making them good friends already and it shows in their performance, always interacting with each other and having fun. Brock is an amazing front man who loves his fans and is a crowd pleaser; he has a clean, clear singing voice to go along with massive screams. Steve Holt’s impressive with his riff work, Kyle has fast hitting beats and Mike Whitney grinds the bass like he was born with it; makes for an entertaining sounding show for any metal head!

able her covering “The Bitch Is Back” and B.C. Rich can’t fight that nickname neither. Classic punky metal riffs keep everyone smiling, cheering and partying! Gearheads will appreciate the Marshall love she has and a minimalist pedal board. Straight ahead rock and roll sound is her favorite and she’s not afraid to go direct, bypassing the effects. She’s aware that her fans are savvy and she’s loved because she rocks them all! Next year her book hits the stands. “Living Like A Runaway” will bring to light that life as the Metal Queen is honestly dramatic. She carries on this high-powered set with the song of the same title off the CD with the same title. One which was inspired by Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon. In a nutshell, it’s about the journey - Legging

out around the world, from UK to LA and around and around. Her band was also wicked and could be described as Warlocks. Marty O’Brien on bass and Bobby Rock on drums, had that solid impeccable timing and oomph. Patrick Kennison on guitar was swapping solos with our rock goddess and texturing some layers of his own. Lita let our photographer on stage to capture the intensity and passion of these gents. It was sizzling! Climaxing now with The Runaways mouth-watering, iconic hit, “Cherry Bomb” which is still being re-recorded and re-released. Even Miley Cyrus paid homage to the Punk Rock/ Hard Rock hit on a recent tour. “Black Leather” by The Professionals showed her passion for Punk and her love of LA.

The “Lita” album also features “Close My Eyes Forever”, her biggest hit as it’s her duet with Ozzy Osbourne. The ‘other’ massive hit “Kiss Me Deadly”, rounded out the show as she left with a bang. These two peaked at numbers eight and twelve respectively on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. To quote her from an interview published recently in this mag, “I love you! I’ve missed you. It’s good to see you and good to be back!” Passionate and courageous may describe her personal life, but wicked only begins to describe her career. Her milestones are still accumulating; her mass appeal, intact. She makes eye-contact and smiles. You melt! You have no choice - she owns it! b!||yzee

Singer/guiartist Melissa Brooks and The Aquadolls played to a rabid all-ages crowd, evident by the crush within the front rows (especially if you were lucky enough to be up front) on May 9- at the Constellation Room inside the Observatory. From what I heard, it was a sold out night. With the Aquadolls’ first full length “Stoked On You” in the can for almost 2 years, the band has since garnered a sizeable following, as can be seen of the typical outpouring in fan responses to Brooks’ endearing and playful online presence. The music in general has an almost ethereal feel, a laidback surf vibe to their brand of rock. Make no mistake in assuming that the general feel of the band’s recordings is what you will get at a live show. Brooks in person is an electrifying performer. Not only is she great in her interactions with fans offstage, but onstage as well. The continuous rounds of crowd surfing combined with Brooks’ and the band’s energy, it made for memorably fun night for all involved. Along with currently working on a solo album, Melissa Brooks embarked on her first headlining tour in July.

Valora is an Electronic Rock band from Los Angeles, CA. Formed in 2007 by front woman Syd Duran, Syd’s sister Taelor Duran joined the band in 2009 adding keyboard and back up vocals. Current members also include Brian Dropkin on drums, Mike Kindel on guitar with guest DJ Mot & Krid. Syd is the featured vocalist on David Garrett’s remix of “Bring Me To Life” produced by grammy-winning DJ and producer, Stonebridge. You can also find Syd’s vocals featured on Breaking Benjamin’s single off their greatest hits album “Blow Me Away” which landed the number five spot on active rock charts. In 2013 Valora teamed up with EDM artist/ producer Mot & Krid creating songs “React”, “Let’s Be Bad” and their latest single “Electric Angel” just to name a few off of the Album “React”. March 8th at House Of Blues in Anaheim, CA is where we set the stage with the band Valora with guest DJ Mot & Krid. Rock meets electronic sounds to create magic along with vocalist Syd Duran’s captivating looks and the way she moves, you can’t help, but to be drawn in. Syd’s sister Taelor on keyboard is amazing also adding sultry back up vocals, complimenting Syd’s powerful voice.

DJ Mot & Krid is a great DJ with a ton of energy! He’s back there jumping up and down the whole time, he is also a good drummer backing up sick beats from Brian Dropkin. Along with Mike Kindel with the reefs, Valora’s sound is different and a fresh take on rock. Overall the band has great chemistry and stage performance, I highly recommend going to their next show (I will be there with bells on) and check out their album “React” available on ITunes. Hit up YouTube while you’re at it and check out their music video “I Waited For You,” directed by Lance Drake.

First to hit the I Heart Radio Stage was Cincinnati based pop rock band, Let It Happen. The band played a short energetic set, giving shout outs to local fans in the crowd throughout the show. The next band I caught on the I Heart stage was, Machine Heart (hailing from Los Angeles, California),

who just released their newest EP, In Your Dreams. Chart topping rapper Ludacris, who flew straight in from his Luda Day Weekend charity events in Atlanta (and was headed straight back right after the set), was perhaps one of the most anticipated acts from festival goers over the weekend. Luda hit the stage with lifelong friend and fellow rapper Lil Fate for a set full of mash-ups and classic tracks spanning his entire career. Columbus based rockers; O.A.R graced the Stella Main Stage Saturday night, drawing a huge crowd of local fans. Teen Choice Awards nominee, Rachel Platten, who’s single “Fight Song” has gone 2x Platinum, took the I Heart Radio Stage late after numerous sound issues for an impressive and unfortunately shortened set full of tracks off of her new EP, Fight Song, as well as debuts of a new single. Up last on the I Heart Radio Stage was blues/pop infused, Hollywood Records recording artist, ZZ Ward, who put on by far the most impressive show of the night, with a set list full of songs off of ZZ’s newest album, Love And War, “Love 3x” and older fan favorites, “Charlie Ain’t Home”, “365 Days” and more, getting the crowd psyched and ready for headliner Young The Giant on the Stella Main Stage. Young The Giant took Columbus by storm and had everyone dancing and singing along to their biggest hits all night long, proving to be the perfect closing act for the first day of Fashion Meets Music Festival 2015. Overall, Fashion Meets Music Festival seems to be the newest premier summer arts event in the Central Ohio area, creating the perfect blend of music and fashion with something for everyone to enjoy. by Alison “MetalBabe” Cohen Former ‘Headbanger’s Ball’ host Riki Rachtman deserves a lot of credit for bringing us all together for a major event for fans of 80’s rock, hair metal, and everyone who remembers the days of the Cathouse (Rock n’ Roll ‘Playground’ owned by Riki Rachtman and Taime Downe from 1986 to 1993) at Irvine Meadows on Saturday, August 15th, 2015. There was a heat advisory in effect that day, with temperatures ranging from 95 to 105 degrees, but that didn’t slow any of us down! Twenty-four bands played on two stages from 2pm until 11:30pm including: Extreme, Tom Kiefer, Dokken, Gilby Clarke, Sebastian Bach, Tracii Guns, Stephen Pearcy, Faster Pussycat, Enuff Z’ Nuff, Dangerous Toys, Jetboy, LA Guns, Bang Tango, Saigon Kick, Junkyard, Pretty Boy Floyd, Autograph, Little Caesar, Black N’ Blue, Tuff, Trixter, and Bullet Boys. Battle for the Cathouse Bands Swamphammer and The Aviators opened the show, and the night was rounded out by a collection of seasoned musicians in Gilby Clarke’s All Star Band. Musicians who played the festival throughout the day made their way to the stage that night, including Taime Down, Chip Z’Nuff, Sebastian Bach, Gilby Clarke, Evan Seinfeld, Michael Starr, Nuno Bettencourt, and Phil Lewis. Even Riki Rachtman himself sang onstage, and Ace Frehley from Kiss made an appearance at the jam. Some of the songs they played were: “Deuce,” “Mr. Brownstone,” “Search and Destroy,” “Shock Me,” and “The Jean Genie.” There was a vendor village where Metal Babe Mayhem had a variety of clothing, jewelry, and accessories, and featured the unveiling of the brand new Rock N Roll Industries bikini, had a wall of Al Bane for Leather guitar straps, and several designs from Beltatude. Metal Babe Mayhem also had a photo booth where several of the performing musicians stopped by, including Chip Z’Nuff, Troy Patrick Farrell, PJ Farley and Steve Brown from Trixter, Michael Grant, (LA Guns) and Stevie Rachelle and Todd Chaisson from Tuff. (Sending a big thank you to everyone who came by the booth to show their support!) I hardly had a chance to leave the booth and only caught a few songs from bands here and there. But, what I saw and heard (from a distance) was truly a blast from the past, bringing me right back to when I first fell in love with most of the bands performing. It was great to reminisce and share the experience with so many like-minded people. Overall, Cathouse Live felt like ‘home’ that day and I am truly thankful to have been part of it all.

back to Europe then the U.S again. Starting with Floor Jansen being the bands current lead vocalist, she has highly complimented the band, not only because her voice can reach such drastic pitches, but because her humble personality makes her stage presence enjoyable to watch and connect to. As she would sing duets with Marco Hietala, their expressions would lighten the audience. Fans would cheer and sing along, even though many had seats, fans preferred to stand up and cheer along to their songs. The band all-together, deserve all the love and attention. Their music is powerful, and it can be felt in the lyrics as well as their love for their fans. Simply because they don’t stay and party with us, doesn’t mean they don’t make the time to do meet and greets or sneak away to meet some of their fans.

If there is one band that is perfect to be seen at the Greek Theatre, I would have to suggest it to be- Nightwish. The theatre has kept its vintage architecture look even though it has been remodeled due to earthquakes. A few months ago on a perfect full moon, with stars so bright that they gave the stage a perfect glow, symphonic metal band - Nightwish headlined the show. If you haven’t seen a Nightwish show, you’re truly missing out. Not only do they sound just as amazing live, but their performance takes you to another level. Their stage presence is truly deeply passionate. Whether they sing or speak, at times it feels like a lullaby. What made the Greek Theatre such a perfect venue was that their seating is outdoors. Your view in front, is the stage, and when you look up, is the sky. Even if it had been pouring rain, I don’t think the fans would have minded at all. If anything it would have made their performance so much more poetic. At this moment, they are touring in South America ending their tour in October in Mexico. Their dates are locked until 2016 going

t isn’t very often that you get a chance to see a band like Armored Saint in a intimate venue like Vamp’d Vegas. So it was no surprise that the show sold out before they hit the stage, but for those lucky enough to make it in; were in for a great show, featuring songs from their new album: Win Hands Down to all the way back to their hits from the 80’s! It was a amazing night and for those of you that haven’t yet, pick up the new album with the sound of Armored Saint that you have always loved. Red, White and BLUE Album! By Travis Janssen and Kayli Crawford

What’s the color of your energy? It was a beautiful “SUNSET IN JULY” this passed INDEPENDENCE DAY when the ever so awesome 311 played at Mandalay Bay Resort in beautiful Las Vegas as a part of their BEACH CONCERT SERIES. Epic! They did not disappoint as they played all the tracks from the 1995 release of their self-titled ALBUM “311” also known as the blue album. As well as many of their newer songs. 311 rocked the stage as us

Excitable Ones grooved in the waist high water in the pool and the beach below to the usual herby scent of a 311 show. This weekend also marked the release of 311’s Amber Ale. Amazing aroma and rich flavor, must go out and get yourself some now. You won’t regret it. The show ended on an even higher note with an amazing fireworks display. The UNITY was strong as we all gradually exited the venue chanting “3…..11……3,3……11.”

What can I say to the masses about Thelonious Monkey? What a crazy ass show at the Baked Potato, Lankershim. Chris “Drummer of the Century” Wabich, the beautiful Jenny Ing on keys, vocals, and sax (modern day Karen Carpenter, Minnie Ripperton) playing the 2016- not 2015 versions of future jazz. Alternative rock jazz and blues; my potato had to wait.. Paid $15.00 for the thing to sit, while I was amazed of the sound I was hearing. Jenny, Chris and the band were so terrific and off the Canada tour, when I last heard them. Theo Monkey music is so obscure, clear founded. Yoko and Lennon I know for fact would be sitting in my chair, at edge of their seat. Terrific is an understatement, catch their next gig; find them on: creativedefensemusic.com. -Adria Hight

“80’s In the Park” Rocks On despite Mother Nature being a total Bitch By Missie Tong

2015’s 80’s in the Park Festival was determined to happen despite all the bad luck and bad weather that hurled its way. This was the third year for this festival, which was held at the Melbourne Auditorium in Melbourne, FL on August 28-August 30th, and the first year for the outside Retrospect Records Stage, hosted by Retrospect Records founder and president, Adrian Samuels. The festival consisted of two stages, one inside, which was the main stage, and the Retrospect Records stage outside, various vendors scattered around the festival grounds. The festival started on the evening of Thursday, August 28th with bands on the Retrospect Records stage. Burning Heat, Mystery and Bullet Boys kicked off the festivities that night. That seemed to be

the end of the party for Bullet Boys’ singer Marq Torien, who reportedly got pinched in Tampa after the show for nonpayment of child support…. again I guess it just isn’t a rock n roll show without a rock star getting arrested….how very 80’s!!!

Firehouse, Slaughter, Kip Winger, Kix, LA Guns, Femme Fatale, Autograph and Lita Ford took everyone back to the days we all know, love, and wish would never end…80’s in the Park. Plans are now underway for 2016’s festivities so visit www.80sinthepark.com to stay updated on dates, locations and bands being booked for next year’s festival.

Cincinnati, Ohio band, The Mighty Swine, got the party started on Friday and that seemed to be the end of the Retrospect Records stage for the rest of the festival. Mother Nature decided to put the screws to the whole outside operation and forced the cancellation of bands both Saturday and Sunday. The cancellation decision was made by the city of Melbourne due to the dangerous winds and lightening. Mother Nature’s bitch-fit didn’t stop the rockin in the auditorium though. Epicenter Epicenter took place for the first time ever in Los Angeles,CA and was hosted at the Forum. With a lineup of Korn, Limp Bizkit, House Of Pain, P.O.D., Suicidal Tendencies, and Hopsin, the show was guaranteed to be very intense. Of the 80’s, Suicidal Tendencies was the essential thrash metal/ hardcore punk band. For the 90’s Korn, Limp Bizkit, and P.O.D. were the kings of nu metal/ alternative metal, while House Of Pain was one of the biggest rap groups to come out of the 90’s. Lastly, Hopsin a rising star of the 00’s opened the show. To fit so many acts and to finish before midnight the show had to start early. Doors opened at 4:30 P.M. with Hopsin taking the stage at 5:20 P.M. Each set up until Limp Bizkit was 35 minutes long. As the night went on, the crowd began to fill in until all the seats were taken and the GA floor was covered. The next group was Suicidal Tendencies, who took over the Forum with metal legends Exodus and Slayer last November. Suicidal Tendencies opened with “You Can’t Bring Down” as usual to really get the crowd going at the beginning of their set, followed with classics like “Go Skate,” “I Saw Your Mommy,” and “Institutionalized.” Of all the bands that night, Suicidal Tendencies ran around the stage the most. Up next was P.O.D. who throws down like nobody else. P.O.D.’s set included their biggest songs

58 Rock N Roll Industries Magazine

“Boom,” and “Alive,” which the audience knew all the words to, even front-man, Sonny Sandoval came to the barricade to be as close to the audience as possible. For 21 years P.O.D. has had their key lineup with. P.O.D. and Suicidal Tendencies were tough acts to follow. House Of Pain came next and a few songs in started getting their groove. The song of the night that had the crowd dancing around the most was their anthem “Jump Around.” This was House Of Pain’s only Southern California performance of the year. House of Pain’s Dj Lethal was also a long term member of Limp Bizkit. Limp Bizkit may have been the heaviest band of the night with Wes Borland’s guitar on overdrive. Fred Durst sported a Suicidal Tendencies button down shirt. Bassist Sam Rivers had a bass with led lights, John Otto could hardly be seen between his huge drumset, and Borland known for his crazy looks was had kabuki makeup, big yellow sunglasses, pencil drawn mustache, straw hat, and a big coat with tigers printed. Limp Bizkit also had the loudest set. While the the sets before were 35 minutes, Limp Bizkit played a 55 minute set. They opened with Ministry’s “Thieves,” followed by “Hot Dog” with bits of Metallica’s “Master Of Puppets,” one of their biggest hits “My Generation,” “Livin’ It Up,” another huge hit “My Way.” Their set also included a cover of Rage

Against the Machine’s “Killing In The Name,” their biggest song “Rollin’ (Air Raid Vehicle) which had 2 people that appeared to be audience members but were actually breakdancers, “Take a Look Around,” and finished with “Break Stuff.” Limp Bizkit definitely set the bar high. Also, this year marks their 20th anniversary. Around 10:30 there was just one band left which was none other than Korn. Since Korn’s debut album in 1994 they have created their own style of music. With guitarist Brian “Head” Welch back in the group, it has made their live sound so much better. The only non original member is drummer Ray Luzier who joined in 2007 and since then has been a huge part of the band’s sound. Korn’s set included “Falling Away From Me,” “ Helmet In The Bush,” “Daddy,” and “Freak On A Leash.” Korn was the perfect headliner to have such an incredible lineup. Although the 90’s ended 15 years ago, all groups are as good as ever and still putting out new music. The show came to an end at 12:30 am and is bound to be one of the biggest shows of the year. One thing all the bands had in

common besides their heavy sound was they haven’t aged a bit in sound or appearance. -Alex Kluft

Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival 2015 By Angelica Ulloa

Back to the stage we went to catch, Hell Yeah play and of course, as expected the stage was filled. People were calling out for them before they even started. Gladly, it was still daylight, which meant that images of every single member could be caught in action. Because action was what each member gave us, from Vinnie and his fast drumming to Chad Gray’s high pitch! If you haven’t seen a live performance from these guy’s, you’re in for a treat, they don’t just perform, they move. There’s so much energy and passion, it makes sense- why the audience could be seen ecstatic.

Angelica Ulloa

If only all Mayhem Festival dates could have such an amazing weather as this years was. We started off the day with a very gloomy weather, making the heat tolerable. If you haven’t attended Mayhem Festival in San Bernardino, usually some fans pass out from dehydration and because the weather is so hot it makes you sweat any liquid straight out of your skin within seconds. It must be hard for the artists themselves to perform in full attire, especially for those who go the extra mile to dress in uniform. This year it wasn’t just the weather that seemed to be different, so was the crowd. The festival was not as packed, as it usually is known to be, was it that the headliners weren’t like the previous times and one as big as the other? The music scene in California is known to be a hard one, but if there’s one thing that is certain

is that if a musician is as humble as their popularity may be, then their fans will follow them and support them wherever they may be. As for this instance we had Slayer, King Diamond, Hell Yeah and Devil Wears Prada headlining. Devil Wears Prada, were amazing to watch live. Their performance could be felt from one musician to another. Their stage presence was equally strong-felt. They didn’t care how many people they were rocking out to, they performed like the stage was filled with a million fans. We took a break, and ran to the Coldcock Whiskey booth to check on Adam Grayer. Surely enough, he was running around making sure the booth was organized and coordinated for Kerry King to sign autographs and meet fans. As if that was enough, they started a BBQ as well. Free Rockstar drinks, and Coldcock shots to go with the amazing burgers that were being grilled.

We took another break to explore, and went into the VIP area. VIP area meant amazing taco truck, and delicious FREE icecream from the one and only Archie’s! Archie’s Ice Cream, is more than just ice cream, currently located in Tustin- they have a few Ice Cream trucks, where they travel to festivals to connect and be a part of them for an amazing cause. All donations that they make, goes straight into what they do in their actual location; which is to support and create a place for children that want to sing and perform live. They provide their place, and encourage the arts. It’s beautiful when people give back rather than take all the time, and this Ice Cream store is just that- a way to teach and give back. In fact this was one of my personal highlights, I was able to send off the owner - Shant Keuilian to finally leave his truck to watch even a bit of the show, while I took over. I can say that I met amazing people this time at the Mayhem Festival, and maybe it was because it wasn’t so packed and rushed like the previous year. There was room for us all to connect, laugh and make new memories. King Diamond was up and screams could be heard. From the pit view, the best part of it is, how close you’re to the artist, and when you turn around, how close you are to the fans. Some of the fans faces were painted with crosses, and this is one band that I am glad the weather wasn’t as hot as

it usually would have been. Their gothic setup was intense, from there being gargoyles to the stage looking like a castle, it went so well with their gothic wardrobe, and best of all- the music. Whether you have your eyes open or closed, that mesmerizing voice pitch will take you to other worlds. The band all together compliments each other so well, it makes their live performance something you want to see again. Finally, the last band that so many can be said that traveled for was next. As soon as Slayer stepped up on stage, the whole fans pumped their fists up on the air and chanted the name Slayer. Regardless of Slayer being known to be one of the hardest bands to shoot, because of their red lighting, it was well worth for many to get that experience. Being so close as a fan, and having the privilege to take pictures of them to tell a story, is what our magazine is about. Kerry King is a hardcore shredder, whenever he had a solo moment, the audience got wild. They played the song Repentless off their new album that just got released a few days ago. There’s a lot of mixed emotions and heart put into that song, and from what we have heard a bit of- the album as well. If you’re a Slayer fan, you may want to get a hold of the new album and let your heard and ears do the judging. It is now available on digital, vinyl, and cd.

Michael- For me personally is the interaction with all the bands on our day. It’s so fun to catch up with everyone and watch shows I may have never seen before. Plus while some of the bands where on stage we were able to raid their dressing rooms. You guys played in 4 different states at Soundwave which was your favorite and why? Michael-Australia as a whole is one of my favorite countries to play. I had a GREAT time in every state. For us we usually only see the airport hotel and the Soundwave site. I guess I just love the people. The girls are hot! Steel Panther has a huge Australian fan base, did you guys realize how massive you are in Australia? Michael-No, however I figured it out when I got free Starbucks coffee in 68 68 Rock RockNNRoll RollIndustries IndustriesMagazine Magazine

Grand Opening

I had the distinct honor of recently attending good friend Chad Lee‘s new photography studio open house. The studio is now officially open to the public but this night was an invite-only event and it was great to be among those invited. If you don’t already know, Chad Lee has earned a solid reputation as a rock/metal photographer for over 15 years. Shooting legendary artists in concert and in studio, Chad’s images have graced hundreds of press and promotional items. His incredible photography and dedication to his craft and the music that we all love was very apparent on opening night as well as the love being reciprocated by everyone in attendance; including some of the aforementioned artists. The evening got off to a cool start before I even walked in the door as Mark Slaughter was on his way out as I entered. We talked for a few moments and made plans to communicate again soon on the show. If you didn’t know, Chad Lee has photographed Mark many times over the years including the photoshoot for Mark’s new solo album ‘Reflections in a Rearview Mirror.’ The rock n’ roll scene in Nashville is very much a family these days and lots of family was on hand to help Chad celebrate. Artists and friends were everywhere to be seen including Rex Brown (Pantera), Ryan Cook (Hair of the Dog, The Big Rock Show), Jeremy Asbrock (John Corabi, The Big Rock Show), Hannah Fairlight, Deano Workingman (The Big Rock Show), Rachel Bolan (Skid Row), Christopher Williams & Peter Baltes(ACCEPT), Luc Carl (Sirius/XM Satellite Radio), and Nick Bowcott (Grim Reaper) who was on hand to perform a blistering tribute to Dimebag Darrell right there in the studio. The studio is housed in the same building as Nashville Sign and Graphics. Owner Cynthia Ryan is also Chad’s partner in the business. Combining their creative talents, it was clear that this is a one-of-a-kind unique space that celebrates rock and metal music in the best way. It not only has the highest quality equipment but it’s got a great rock and metal vibe from the lounge area to the amazing collection of framed images from Chad’s career to the album cover covered section of the floor. As if shooting iconic rock/metal images wasn’t enough, Chad heads up the Nashville chapter of Ride for Dime. Ride for Dime Nashville 2015 is coming soon! This year promises to be amazing with tons of special guests rounded out by a great bill of Wireless Soul, The F**king Pantera Cover band from Atlanta The Big Rock Show, andSlaughter. by Randy Blythe You would not think for a second that you are about to laugh when all you expect is to “hear” Randy’s dark memories as you read this book. Funny at moments and dramatic reminiscing stages of the challenge that fate bestowed on Randy. Accused of manslaughter in a foreign land and arrested as he landed, the one thought that lingered in his head was “You’re screwed,” for this was not just another petty arrest, this was possibility of many years in prison, far away from home. To face the monster or run away, that was the question. Randy tells us how those days in prison and what he witnessed there have re-shaped his life, they are memoirs of Dark Days. With so many different roles in the music business it is hard for any one person to have the time to learn them all, along with staying healthy, selling your act, posting on social media sites, oh and play music! That is why this book is prefect for your busy life of becoming a rockstar. Being a risk to people that invest money into your band is just not cool anymore and some investors may ask you to take a physical and maybe a drug screen, forget the drugs, drinking and getting crazy on show days you have a job to do. Loren recommends healthy, clean living with diet and exercise and takes you through tracking your life style. Don’t worry you still get to have fun as Loren breaks down being in a band from start to finish, giving tips on finding, naming and writing music for your band. The importance of standing out in a crowd in today’s fast past and over crowed music world is imperative! Read how to get things right from the start instead of making mistakes that will waste your time and funds, unless you have lots of those things? Then by all means…… But

money will not buy you fans. Very rarely do things go as planned all the time. Let Loren teach you some basic steps to ensure you plan for the worst and have a back plan, such as fill in musicians if one of you should fall ill, although hard for a front person. The show must go!! The music industry can be a scary place with so many fakes and con artists out there, learn how to recognize these people from the start and a avoid them. Over all Loren Weisman has written you bible of how to be a well around musician so you take your band to the top and a “Dummy” can read it. -Miranda Panda

Music City

SmashingByPumpkins Parker Minor line-up of shows in August for 2015, which truly defines the term ‘Music City’. This intimate outdoor setting makes this venue one of the most exclusive outdoor music venues in the country. With a cap of 6,500 maximum people, the amphitheater was nearly sold-out as the first rock show to be welcomed to the new Nashville venue was none other than The Smashing Pumpkins! Along with the Pumpkins were Marilyn Manson and his band co-headlining ‘The End Times’ Tour at the new outdoor concert venue. Corgan & the Pumpkins headlined the co-toured show in Nashville, as it was their last show with the tour, ending in the Music City. With the near ending summer and the southern fall season drawing closer in Nashville, this exclusive alternative show set the mood outdoors for the inviting autumn weather with an evening of leaf fallen lawn seats, hoodies, & live music!

performance with Corgan and the band for fans. Being a fan of the band for years myself, it was exhilarating to walk away from such an inspiring event with such an icon of the 90’s Alternative/Rock era, legend Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins.

As an On-Air Personality for Nashville’s Rock Radio Station, I was very fortunate to have had the opportunity to be part of an exclusive VIP acoustic 3-song set, and question answering session, backstage with Billy Corgan before the show. It was such a rare experience to be a part of! Smashing Pumpkins fans exchanging questions and answers with Corgan, some in a sarcastic sense, was quite an amusing half hour of my life, and a realization that Corgan was actually a kick to be around despite some of the critic’s opinions. After the amusing session, a formal meet & greet and pictures followed the acoustic

hat’s up guitar players out there, today we’re going to work on something I get asked about a lot. It seems every few days a student of mine will ask how can I use the pentatonic scale if I’m not starting out on the low E string, it’s very simple...

The pattern that you’re very familiar with now, the minor pentatonic scale usually moves up or down on any fret, as we know from prior Lessons, you change the fret, you change the key. Now if you happen to step up to the A string.... Let’s say you’re playing a bar chord on the 5th fret which would be in the key of D, now imagine that the A string is the E string and do the minor pentatonic scale the same shape you know, except for the last two strings. This would make the fingering first finger 4th, 1st 3rd, 1st 3rd, 1st 3rd, of course when you reach your B string you will have to alter your fingering. Now the same thing would apply on any fret of the A string, go ahead and give it a try, play the minor pentatonic scale in B which of course we know is at the 7th fret, play the minor pentatonic scale and then move to the A string. On the second fret, play the exact same scale there, now wasn’t that simple? There are many, many examples of this that will work on any scale, any mode- simply by moving them up one string! Another question I’ve been receiving a lot through my emails here at Rock N Roll

76 Rock N Roll Industries Magazine

Industries, is people asking what kind of plectrum to use , should it be thick, thin, large, small, triangle, or shaped like a carrot? For all I care the answer to this question is very simple, if you play what feels comfortable to you, you will be more at ease to learn things. The simplicity of holding a pick correctly is something that a lot of people can’t do. Many struggle with holding the pic too tightly, some can’t hold onto it enough, some people use their fingers, it is entirely up to you! Personally, I only use Sinister guitar picks, because they rock! I will say that if you are performing sweep picking or arpeggios, then you need to have the pick very relaxed in your hand so that it can sweep across the strings, perhaps next lesson we can go over some of the techniques that encompass sweep picking, for now keep working that over and over- remember to change key often, so you are comfortable in any key soloing. Don’t forget to keep your strings clean, your licks mean, and always check out Rock N Roll Industries for the greatest lessons, and interviews with today’s biggest rock stars - Michael G out!

Drum

Corner “The Power of the Ghost”

Welcome to lesson #3 of The Drum Corner...brought to you buy the fine folks at Rock-n-Roll Industries Magazine! I am Sulli...your host...and we are going to dig right in!

I have titled this lesson “The Power of the Ghost”. That’s right - we are going to introduce ghost notes to your grooves! We are taking this from the beginning so that as you progress in your playing you can introduce this technique with amazing results! A “ghost note” is exactly what it states - a note played that is sometimes heard and sometimes not heard, but they are always FELT! A ghost note played properly will add a whole new dimension to your playing and it will increase the pocket you create on stage with your fellow band-mates. As I have stated in the previous lessons/videos, I am a strong supporter of giving the space between the notes room to breath. That freedom of space will open up the groove and add more personality. However, there are times when filling up those spaces between the beats can make the groove move along and work nicely. When first adding ghost notes to your playing, it’s important to have a clear idea of what dynamics are and how they fit in your particular style of playing. A simple definition would be a “Up Stroke” being a full-on hit and a “Tap Stroke” being a lighter hit. Doesn’t matter if you are hitting a drum, a cymbal or any other percussion instrument, it’s either a light hit (Tap Stroke) or a harder hit (Up Stroke). Another important, but basic, point to remember is a Tap Stroke has a smaller range of motion between the stick and drum and a Up Stroke will have a greater range of motion between the stick and drum when played. A ghost note is the Tap Stroke that occurs between the Up Stroke. I like thinking of ghost notes as notes that dance in and around the groove! A quick reminder...when counting a 4/4 bar of drum music...the basic foundation looks like this (16th notes): 1 - E - & - A / 2 - E - & - A / 3 - E - & - A / 4 - E - & - A In a standard bar of 4/4 music, we have your kick on 1 and 3, your snare on 2 and 4 and the hi hat or ride cymbal doing 8th notes on top essentially hitting on every note displayed. This is what I referred to as “The Money Groove” in our first lesson, please refer to that video for a refresher (minus the ghost notes). So, in this simple pattern, we add the ghost note on the “E” of 1, the “E” of 3 and then the “A” of 2 and “A” of 4. Once you are comfortable with this, add another kick drum in on the “&” of 3. Brightens the groove right up!! As always, be sure to use a metronome when practicing, start at a slower tempo and increase as you become more comfortable! Simply adding these four additional snare notes in a Tap Stroke format will immediately change the feel and sound of this simple groove, however - for this idea to truly come alive, you must have complete control over the lighter strokes versus the heavier strokes-again, dynamics. Also, precision is key - executing precise ghost notes is essential. Sloppy ghost notes will produce a sloppy groove! The cool thing about this exercise is that you can rearrange the groove in any combination you like. I personally keep the snare on 2 and 4 but will move the kick drum around to different points and thus landing the ghost notes in more challenging spots. I also like having the Up Strokes hit right in the middle of the snare head and the Tap Strokes hit more on the side or top of the snare head...this simple change will add another cool vibe! Please

check out the accompanying video to see me work through some variations of this exercise - it’s a great practice tool, a solid workout for the snare hand and will ultimately become a prized possession in your bag of tricks! Our “Practice Pad in 5” this lesson is a rudiment that I work daily on the pad and will increase your single stroke roll in ways you didn’t think possible...The Accented Triplet. This pattern is performed one hand at a time in a triplet fashion and looks like this: 1 - & - A / 2 - & - A / 3 - & - A A triplet is simply a pattern composed of 3 notes played in a 3/4 time signature. To execute, the numbers (1, 2, 3) are accented with a heavier hit and the & and A are played with a lighter hit. Start slow and build up to faster tempos. I like to set a number of times per hand - say 20 complete patterns with each hand at a certain tempo...then increase the speed and do 15 complete patterns per hand and so on. It›s a great endurance builder, works the weaker hand, emphasizes dynamics and just overall produces more confidence in stick control! Check out the video to see my daily practice pad routine utilizing this rudiment. Finally, our “Drum Fill of the Lesson” is a really cool kick drum/snare drum pattern that I like to call “The Question and Answer”. In a standard bar of 4/4...the kick hits on “1” and “E”....the snare hits on “&” and “A”. Essentially, the kick drum speaks and the snare drum answers. It’s very effective when played properly and has a concussive effect. I routinely use variations of this pattern so again, please check out the video and see what the “The Question and Answer” is all about! I sincerely appreciate everyone checking in on Lesson #3. I had a blast putting this together and hope that you will have fun working on these ideas. As always, we love hearing from you. Email me at with any specific questions, thoughts, ideas, etc...and be sure to check out Rock n Roll Industries on the web. Until next time...stay focused, work at it everyday and hit them hard!! Follow the Revolution Attitude - One word that describes exactly what you need to accomplish to make your point in this business. As a guitar player, I was trained that it’s not what you say, but rather how you say it. In previous columns I’ve touched on things such as scales and exercises that are designed to help you discover your potential in terms of speed, dexterity and mental strength. This month is no different, but you’re going to notice that it’s not just notes or tab that I’m giving you but rather an inside look into what you should be thinking as you employ certain aspects into your music. First, pick a key and decide how to make a statement right off the bat. I’m going to pick a G chord in an open position and let it rip. I like to play my G (GBD) down GBDGDG or root, third, fifth, root, fifth, root. From there we’ll make a statement with a series of rolling harmonics with descending triplets B, A back to G with a rapid pull off motion on the 3rd string from the 4th fret to the 2nd back to open G. While doing this, try dragging your right palm up from the pickups toward the neck resulting in an artificial harmonic that sounds like breaking glass. This technique can be difficult to grasp if you’re using the wrong pickup, so be sure to use the one closest to the bridge for optimum results. If you can keep the momentum up with your left hand, try moving the right hand palm as slow as possible to see if you can distinguish all the sweet spots. You won’t need to understand nodes to do this, but if you do then it’ll make sense and you’ll have an advantage when it comes to the pinch harmonics later. To finish off this technique, let’s bail out and give it one more open G to let everyone know you’re serious.

and the ring for the hammer on and pull off. Once your fingers get tired from this, switch to the ring finger for the bend and use the index and pinkie for the hammer on and pull off. Now that you have the listener’s attention, it’s time to melt their brains. In our previous lessons we’ve taken the idea of descending in 3 note groupings using a triplet feel in major scale positions. While this works for the pentatonic as well, you are going to avoid being predictable by adding in the major 6th, the flat 5th and the major 3rd to give you a [root, b3, 3, 4, #4, 5, 6 and b7]. I’m sure you could call this a hybrid scale like Dorian this or Hexatonic that, but really I just want you to focus on the quality of the interval. Starting on the 6th fret of the b string and descending back 3 notes at a time F E D, E D C# (6th fret G) D C# C, C# C Bb, C Bb G (5th fret D), C Bb G now roll it back C to B adding a pinched harmonic on the B using the fleshy part of your thumb over the right nodal point between pickups as you pick and simultaneously vibrato the B. Try making this section as fluid or legato as possible until it feels natural. This will keep it from sounding premeditated.

Finally, we can bring this piece home by descending the G hexatonic blues scale from the first octave in box 1 position using every note backwards as fast as possible using your choice of either a pinched harmonic over every tone or a palm mute if you would like to deepen your tone and add the pinch at the end to create a sense of climax. The G blues scale moving backwards would be G F (5th fret, 3rd fret) on the D, D Db C ( 5th fret, 4th fret, 3rd fret) on the A and Bb G (6th fret, 3rd fret on the E) executing a pinched harmonic vibrato back on the octave (5th Using the G chord creates a setting fret on the D). If you’ve got it moving fast where you can use the Gm pentatonic (G enough, show you’ve got some moves by Bb C D and F) [root, b3, 4, 5, and b7] to taking it up an octave repeating the same create a series of lightning fast licks that message. Now bring it back down to the are almost as fundamental to guitar as same position and descend it one last you can get. Let’s get going first by pick- time, only this time let’s avoid hitting the ing the C (5th fret) on string 3 bending up octave and instead add in a fun little trick slightly to come close to sounding the b5 with a bend on the F# (2nd fret E) so that (blue note) then with one more pick com- it slowly reaches up and reaches the note ing down to the 2nd string sounding the D G and let’s everyone know that you’re a (3rd fret) hammering on and pulling off the guitar master and that you have the atF on the same string (6th fret) repeating titude that it takes to win over any crowd. for a measure or two before moving on. Feel free to check out my Take Lessons It’s a pretty blistering lick if you can get it profile at www.takelessons.com/with/ up to speed, so practice this as often as Jason-M to ask me a question or book possible. I’m going to suggest the middle lessons with me yourself! Until next time finger for the initial bend and the index ! - Jason

“The Personality of Scales” by Skye Delamey

The art of songwriting is anything, but mundane. A variety of keys, or scales, tempos, and genres, are some of the most compelling factors in helping to create the mood of the story line of the song you are composing. At it’s basic core, in writing your music, define your song’s purpose, the intent of the song. From there, pick the appropriate key, or scale. Allow yourself to understand the “personality scales.” There was a time in my life where I owned a music instruction business, and I used to ask children I was teaching to define the personality, or character of each key, or scale. Responses would vary from: “Key of F sounds calm and peaceful,” to “Key of B sounds playful and more hyper.” Indeed, each key has it’s unique characteristics, so, in writing music, it helps tremendously to speak the musical language, and understand music theory in relation to key signatures. For example, if the purpose of your song is to be happy and upbeat, you may choose not to put it in the key of A minor. Likewise, if you are writing a sentimental ballad, you may choose not to put it in the brassier toned key of F# major. Understanding key signatures helps you to get an idea of the framework of a song, and also allows you to better assess your options. In addition, songs can be transposed into different appropriate keys. If you are a vocalist, you may find that you are a better singer in certain keys, and that is perfectly normal. A common vocal technique is singing scales using a piano or keyboard. Singing vowels in various keys, aka “scale exercises,” can help a vocalist sing better. Understanding the language of keys also trains your musician’s ear. So much of playing music, or singing comes from listening. The art of listening, in the end plays a great part in the songwriting process. In the end, how do you want it to sound? In being the best songwriter you can be, educate yourself with not only the keys of the major and minor scales, but also with how they sound, and their unique characteristics, as they will play a big part in the song you compose!

Book of Souls

Considering the circumstances and (at some point) doubtful return of Bruce Dickinson after his battle against cancer, Iron Maiden delivers an In-Your-Face 92 minutes-long comeback. With a couple of long tracks in the 12, 13 and even 18 minutes long, many will think “Ain’t nobody got time for that!” But to have the opportunity to embark in this new Maiden journey and experience, all they have to share in this album is something I am glad I got to enjoy and being one of the first in the US to review. Expect their “traditional” sounds and style, but in this album add the “Mystical” and acoustic

In her album, “Cello Metal”, Tina brings us 11 tracks, 5 covers such as “Iron Man”, “Sanitarium”, The Trooper” Raining Blood” and “Cowboys From Hell”. and 5 originals “Child Of Genesis”, “The

Now celebrating the 40 years anniversary we can enjoy the newly released complete soundtrack produced by Richard Hertley, ODE Records. I’m ready to do the “Time Warp”! I’m an 80’s child and grew up dancing to the song at weddings and such, never knowing where it came from or the amazing history behind the song. It wasn’t till I was in my early 20’s some friends took me to the show and I was blown away! Still not knowing much about production, I finally watched the movie and was in ah. This brilliant cult classic will stay with me forever and the sound track is just fun! Put it on in the car with your friends for a road trip and be taken back to a time with sweet transvestites, a mad surgeon and glitter. If you haven’t seen the show or the movie you should add it to your bucket list and embrace this work of art.
