Blues Rockers GA-20 Release
Their New Colemine Records Album Crackdown
By Kevin WildmanGA-20 has released their new Colemine album, Crackdown, which interesting enough the title comes from the only instrumental song on the album, “Crackdown.” Guitarist Matt Stubbs tells us that the song came to him in a dream…. No narrative, just the song itself, which he quickly demoed and then sent out to other members of the band for their input. Obviously they were impressed by it, because it became their only instrumental on the album, not to mention the title of the album.
GA-20 is Matt Stubbs - guitar, Pat Faherty - guitar, and drummer Tim Carman. The band is strictly a threepiece and different from most three-piece bands, there is no bassist, just two guitars and a drummer. Matt tells us that they can merge the bass line into their music hitting the root note on their guitar when they’re performing. No doubt this band is onto something. This band can’t be pigeonholed into any particular Blues style, they cross over with so many styles in so many ways. They have
managed to take the traditional blues sound and jazz it up a bit with a twang of rock or even something that seems like a throwback to roots rock or rockabilly in a way.
The band has been hard at it developing their own identity in the blues community since 2018 with their own resurgence in the traditional blues sound. They have their own slick combination of blues, rock, and country which blends together to create a distinct sound all their own. “We make records that we would want to listen to,” says guitarist Matt Stubbs. “It’s our take on the song-based traditional electric blues we love.”
The band is making waves on the Blues Charts particularly shooting up the Billboard Blues Chart in particular since their first album release. “Since we started the band we’ve focused on the story, the melody, and on creating a mood. Playing live as much as we do, we’re finding more and more that people are discovering how cool it all is. Traditional country, soul and funk music
have all had these massive recent revivals, but traditional blues so far has not.”
The bands previously efforts include 2019’s Lonely Soul and 2021’s Try It…You Might Like It! GA-20 Does Hound Dog Taylor. Matt tells us that the new album, Crackdown is more a continuation on the sound they were developing with Lonely Soul. Crackdown is filled with a lot of great moments. The nine original songs on this album all sound different, which is very refreshing on a blues album. No two songs are the same. They all sound distinctively different from one track to the next, so don’t try lumping these guys into a single category.
Recording on the album was done at Q Division Studios in Somerville, Massachusetts and was recorded with more of a traditional method in mind, and guitarist Matt Stubbs handled production on the project. “We set up the drums and amps all in one room, using a
continued on next page
(continued from previous page)
limited number of microphones and employing some vintage recording techniques,” explains Stubbs. “We brought in a lot of old amps and guitars and had fun exploring different amp/ guitar combinations, and took a good amount of time dialing in the drum and guitar sounds before getting down to work.”
Matt is a longtime veteran of famed bluesman Charlie Musselwhite’s touring band. He has also performed with James Cotton and John Hammond among others. After meeting guitarist Pat Faherty, they soon found out they had the same mutual love of the blues and it didn’t take long for them to start collaborating and soon after that, their first album for Colemine Records, Lonely Soul was released. Joining them on Lonely Soul was Matt’s old touring partner Charlie Musselwhite and Luther Dickinson. The album debuted at the No. 2 position on the Billboard Blues Chart. They followed that up with Tim Carman for the follow up to that album, the 2020 live EP Live Vol. I, which debuted at #1 on the charts. This led to the next release, a tribute to Chicago Blues Legend, Hound Dog Taylor, in 2021 titled Try It…You Might Like It! GA-20 Does Hound Dog Taylor.
Now the band is back with an album that is even far greater that their previous efforts, Crackdown, and the band is getting rave reviews everywhere they go. That’s no surprise for a band that spends its life living on the road. For GA-20, their home is the road. They can’t wait to get out and perform their new music for people. “We’re proud to bring this sound to a new audience,” says Stubbs. “When people hear it, they get what we’re doing and they’re into it. It’s very important to us to make a personal connection,” he continues. “Blues is meant to be played live. It’s about telling stories. We love making records but performing live is even more important to us.”
We had a chance to sit down and talk to Matt and Pat Faherty recently for a little insight into the new project and spent most of our time talking to the
band’s chief lyricist, Pat Faherty.
Music News: Hello Pat I understand that you’re primarily the lyricist of the band.
Pat Faherty: Yes, Yes. I don’t know how that happened, but I ended up being the primary lyricist for the band.
Music News: Well, let’s talk about the songs a bit. I’d interested in hearing about the stories behind them. Let’s start out with the first one on the album, “Fairweather Friend.”
Pat Faherty: Yeah, “Fairweather Friend” was about noticing how people will just come into your life and out of your life based on how well you’re doing. You’ll quickly notice a pattern. Wax and wane, so I wrote a song about it.
Music News: Fairweather friends was an expression my dad used to tell me about. He would say that some of your friends are just “Fairweather Friends. They’ll be there when your doing good and they’ll disappear when the times get harder and then they’re
back again when things look promising. I’ve seen a lot of that over the years.
Pat Faherty: Yeah, It’s a common expression. Definitely.
Music News: Evidently the next song, “Dry Run” was about a girl that was flirting with you at one point.
Pat Faherty: Yes, she was putting it on heavy and I thought she was in to me and it wasn’t like I was thinking about a serious relationship, but I noticed the attention, but I reacted to it because, I’m just human. Then I found out she was just practicing. It was not a good feeling.
Music News: Was there any retaliation on your part when you found that out?
Pat Faherty: No. Not at all. I just self-loathed and felt bad about myself.
Music News: Oh no, that’s terrible. What about “Easy On The Eyes”? Hopefully there’s a better story about
continued on next page
that one.
GA-20
(continued from previous page)
Pat Faherty: Yeah, that was just about a girl who caught my fancy in a bar one night. We had written that song after a late-night jam session after a show in Atlanta. We did a bunch of stuff and that track came out really good and I just felt inspired so I wrote about that.
Music News: It doesn’t sound like any two songs on this album sound the same. Every song has a distinctive different flavor to it.
Pat Faherty: That’s one of the reasons we feel so strongly about this album. It’s not a mesh of kind of one sound, it happens to qualify as ten different songs. Each of them are unique and stand on their own.
Music News: Exactly, there is a lot of variety on this album. You have Blues, Rock, and a couple of them sound a little on the Rockabilly side. There is definitely a big difference in transition from one song to another.
Pat Faherty: I can only assume we had the privilege of growing up when all these genres of music come together as part of the American songbook and American music history. It doesn’t surprise me that as long as we let ourselves naturally write songs, those genres are going to come out.
Music News: Let’s talk about “Just Because”. That’s an interesting song choice. I believe that it’s the only song on the album that you didn’t write. What made the band choose this one?
Pat Faherty: “Just Because” is originally by Lloyd Price. That’s a great song from the ’50s. He did “Stagger Lee.” I don’t know if you know that one.
Music News: Oh yes, I’ve heard that one plenty of times.
Pat Faherty: The great thing we have about growing up in this era is that it’s very easy to find all the songs that disappeared after they stopped being played on the radio. If you grew up in the ’70s or ’80s, maybe you could find these songs in your parent’s record collection or a record store. You’d have to really dig to find these gems. It’s really unfortunate. These are great songs. These are great singers and they might have disappeared if it hadn’t been for the Internet and YouTube. The algorithm for all these songs has a great feature where if you search for one song, all of a sudden other songs start popping up. You just go down a rabbit hole endlessly on all these great songs. That’s how I came up on “Just Because.”
Music News: Well that brings us to “By My Lonesome”. Something about this is starting to sound familiar about
your writing.
Pat Faherty: Yeah, I’m sensing a pattern in my life. I was at a bar and I just noticed the old tried and true method of trying to play up to anybody really, to try and get free drinks out of them. That’s just the theme of that song. It’s like, I’d rather be by myself than try to entertain somebody just so they can get a free drink off of me.
Music News: Does that happen a lot to you?
Pat Faherty: That’s just your standard bar night.
Music News: But you’re the musician, they should be buying you drinks.
Pat Faherty: I don’t drink, so there’s that benefit. Remember that this happened before I wrote the song.
Music News: The next song up is “I Let Someone In”. Was that a bad thing?
Pat Faherty: “I Let Someone In” was about, how do I put it…. I got involved with somebody and I started letting myself think it would develop into something, but it just fizzled out like all the rest. And then there I am. I should have known better.
Music News: Now we’re up to “Double Gettin’”. That needs a little explaining.
Pat Faherty: “Double Gettin’” is not a true experience. It’s about the worse kind of infidelity. It’s about a husband coming home and finding his wife in a compromising position and not handling it well. I’ll leave it at that.
Music News: The last song on the album is “Gone For Good.” It sounds like you’ve left someone or someone has left you.
Pat Faherty: “Gone For Good” is about already having left somebody and then seeing them years later and realizing that you’re better off for not trying to fix that or pursue it. And just noticing that, ‘I’m gone for good. I’m never going back to that.’
GA-20
(continued from previous page)
Music News: Is that from your own personal experience/
Pat Faherty: Yes, It’s almost related to the theme of “Fairweather Friend.” They want to come back into your life and…. no, no, I’m glad it ended when it did.
Music News: When you went in to record these, what came first, the lyrics or the music? How did you’re writing process evolve during the recording of these songs? Does everything happen simultaneously?
Pat Faherty: It’s really song by song. Sometime I’ll hear a little melody line and then syllables will just pop out
of nowhere and I’ll end up with a sentence and I’ll have to figure out what the hell it means. If you dig deep enough, you can find meaning and the song will write itself. Sometimes there’s a catch phrase that kind of lyrically flows, the syllables make sense rhythmically and again, the song will write itself. Sometime I’ll sit on a melody for a few months before I actually get some lyrics for it. Sometimes I’ll have the rhythmic phrasing of the lyrics down and then over time try to let the melody present itself. The real trick is to not get stuck in the ‘I have to have the lyrics first, I have to have the melody first, I have to have the guitar first mode.’ The idea is that songwriting is layering. You want to be able to start and stop at any label that you have to.
Music News: Can you give me an example of how a couple of songs came about or evolved into what they are now?
Pat Faherty: “Double Gettin’” is a good example. I was sitting at home and I’m a silly guy, so I remember hearing this kind of music pattern and then for whatever reason, the syllables took on a form and I thought, ‘what does that even mean? So, I had to think of that for a while before the words even made sense. And “Easy On The Eyes” is a catch phrase. “Fairweather Friend” is a catch phrase. It wasn’t that I thought, ‘I should write a song about a fairweather friend.’ It’s because a common phrase and well known that maybe if you’re coming up with something, it just pops out of nowhere. “Dry Run” is a good example. I saw the girl again after awhile and then I just remember thinking to myself, ‘Was that like a dry run, was that just a practice test.’ And then the word or the phrase for “Dry Run” came into my head and I actually wrote the song in the car that night on the way home in about 30

minutes, just thinking to myself.
Music News: When you sit down to do the lyrics, do they come pretty quickly or do some of these songs take weeks or months to get the lyrics down?
Pat Faherty: Sometimes you can be in a flow state and just write an album in a day. I’ve never done that. The song “No, No” is a good example. It took me about 3 to 4 months to figure out all the lyrics to it. I had a template, but I didn’t have the whole story down or I had the whole story down, but I didn’t have a good lyrical presentation of it for a couple of months.
Music News: Were any of the songs on this album really hard to write or produce to the way you want them to be?
Pat Faherty: Well, it depends man, that’s what makes a good band, right? If somebody presents you with a layer… like a drum part or a guitar part or a bass line. We don’t have bass lines, but you get my point. The writing has to imply space for the other instruments layering on top of it. I think a lot of people trying to learn music can just get stuck in their instrument. You can have a guitar player ask a singer, ‘can you write a part over this’ and the guitar part is so busy that
the singer has no idea where to start. If you’ve got a good team and everybody’s listening, it flows pretty naturally that one person can come up with one thing and it’s written or naturally created in a way that allows space for the rest of the band to come in, lyrics included.
Music News: Since you do the majority of the lyrics writing, who were you’re writing inspirations growing up? What songwriters or bands really inspired you?
Pat Faherty: I just know the bands that I knew growing up. I had such a weird smorgasbord of taste in music. I grew up listening to alternative rock. I grew up listening to punk rock, hard-core punk, and metal. I was playing a lot of jazz in high school. I was playing in some R&B groups as a kid, so the thing is though, I was more in tune to the melody itself. I knew lyrics, cause you sing along with songs. I noticed when I started writing lyrics that I was much more into what a melody would go without lyrics. I don’t know if that makes any sense. At the same time, since I do know songs with lyrics, letting the lyrics be subservient to the melody itself, I think that made it easier for me to get into lyric writing. I think a lot of people will take words and try to force it into a melody and they might have
trouble making it a lyrical musical presentation. The words just kind of feel forced. I don’t know if you ever heard anything like that when you were listening to some songs.
Music News: I know what you mean. I’ve heard songs where they just threw something in there to try to make the song flow a little better. It doesn’t really sound thought out. It’s just thrown in there to try to fix a thought.
Pat Faherty: Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. My point is that for better or worse, I was more in tune with the instrumental melody of it. It either works or it doesn’t. The lyrics have to serve the melody. The real trick of a songwriter is doing it in a way where the lyrics are meaningful and there is a story and people can sing along and enjoy it. It’s still the melody first.
Music News: Where there any songs on here where you had planned it to go one way and then the melody line changed completely around in the studio?
Pat Faherty: The only example I can think of is “Double Gettin’”. The melody was set, but the original arrangement of it was not doing good. Then Tim, our drummer, came up with the perfect drumbeat and it completely saved it. And then that changed how we did the guitar parts underneath it. The melody stayed the same, but the song became totally different.
As you can see, this band has quite a lot to offer with this new album. Our talk with Pat was very enlightening and it was a pleasure learning about the background for all the songs. In a way it helps us to understand what exactly we’re listening too and the meaning behind it. I’d like to thank Matt and Pat for taking the time out to talk to us here at Rock And Blues International and I like to recommend that our readers go out and pick up this little gem of a Blues Album. There are a lot of great moments here and the songs are all first class and very entertaining and good. It is one of the best blues albums we’ve heard this year so far. Check it out when you get a chance.

He Was Turned Down But This Show Host Did Not Give Up
Meet “Skip” Reeves the man with a plan that could not be banned...
Today Skip Reeves is a prominent voice on both American and UK radio with his own creation plus a television show as well as his own booking company. The man started out as a top shelf drummer for major groups such as The Platters, The Drifters, The Coasters, The Marvelettes and Mitch Ryder to name a few. But that was not going to hold him as he envisioned the world of funk not shrinking or going away but staying the course with radio listeners world wide. The man was right and today The Funktologist’s “A Funk Above The Rest” radio show on KPEO Denver (www.kpeo.org) and San Francisco’s KYBN (www.kybnradio.com) is airing in 160 countries. One of the most interesting observations regarding Skip’s success with radio is that he was turned down by multiple stations regarding the idea of a show dedicated to funk. Yet, he did not relent. He just knew this market was not going to ebb and as it turns out he was and remains to this day correct. But even this was not going to hold him and he went on to conquer streaming on visual mediums by partnering with Sparkx TV. His new shows (Video Vibez—The Eclectic Side & Skip’s Artist Showcase) feature artists, producers, and more. Artists if you would like your music video considered for inclusion on the show Video Vibez - The Eclectic Side send your videos to sjrmediagroup@yahoo.com. Skip Reeves has been in the music business for years so he knows the questions to ask, the interesting questions to ask. Most recently he was at the annual awards event hosted by Women Songwriters Hall Of Fame in Washington DC. There he found the opening act to be a knock out and quickly moved with her PR agent to secure a television interview in the weeks to come. The artist’s name is Evelyn Rubio and her interview runs this month (October) on Skip’s Artist Showcase on Sparkx TV which is available on Roku and Amazon Fire. Now for the cherry on top of this delicious scoop of ice cream the man also owns a booking company. He places established acts into very nice listening rooms and venues. Oh and by the way Skip Reeves is also an established author having penned “How I Became A Funktologist”. So if you have an idea, an idea that is a bit out of the ordinary, think of Skip Reeves and his highly successful radio show. Introducing discontinuous change can have its setbacks but change is what the music industry is all about and the merits of change are vital to this industry. Stay the course and make history.

songs made famous by Elmore James, Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Otis Clay and more. It concludes with “SRV,” a beautiful and personal tribute to the late Stevie Ray Vaughan. As the only original on Ace of Blues, the song celebrates their friendship, creative connection, and musical bond with one of the most heartfelt, hypnotic, and hardhitting performances on the record.
Buddy Guy calls Ace of Blues, “Tough, soulful, and sexy. My kind of blues” while Bonnie Raitt says, “Always a fan, I’m so glad Angela’s back with a new album, putting her soulful take on this collection that pays tribute to her old blues friends.” Charlie Musselwhite says, “Angela has just kept getting better. She truly loves and ‘gets’ real deal blues and what it means. It’s great to see her share her blues with us all” while Maria Muldaur offers, “Her lifelong devotion to the blues is fully realized here! This is an absolute, must-have album for any blues lover.”
Angela Strehli returns with Ace of Blues on November 18th via Antone’s/New West Records. The 12-song set is her first album in over 17 years and was co-produced by Strehli & her husband Bob Brown. For over five decades, the 76-yearold Strehli’s voice has coursed through the genre akin to blood through a heart. Her influence can be
felt in the legacy of Antone’s — the iconic Austin blues club she helped found with the late Clifford Antone and where she performed & became friends with the likes of Muddy Waters, Albert King, Otis Rush, Jimmy Reed, and countless others. Ace of Blues pays tribute to the artists who inspired her throughout her career and features renditions of
Relix Magazine premiered the album’s lead off track saying, “For over 50 years, her voice has graced the music world, sashaying through genre, leaving gentle yet permeant imprints wherever she landed — but no such mark has been left so cleanly as her mark on the blues.” Of her rendition of “Two Steps From The Blues,” they call it “... a song doused in blue light and veiled in thick white smoke. On the track, Strehli, accompanied by the glam and glimmer of a full backing band, gives tribute—to the song made famous by Bobby Bland—with sentimental vocals that drip with a musical acumen that could only come from experiencing it live, in person with absolute focus.”
Angela Strehli was born in Lubbock, TX in 1945. Shortly after graduating from the University of Texas in Austin, Strehli joined James

Polk and the Brothers, a Soul/R&B group, and went on to form Southern Feeling with W.C. Clark and Denny Freeman, which became a local favorite. Her next move was to start The Angela Strehli Band which led to five consecutive awards from the Austin Chronicle for Best Female Vocalist. The “Queen of Texas Blues” was born.
In 1975, Strehli co-founded the blues club Antone’s which became internationally famous and still exists today. The venue became home to then long neglected blues masters including Muddy Waters, Albert King, Otis Rush, and countless others, and its house band was the newly formed Fabulous Thunderbirds featuring Jimmy Vaughan & Kim Wilson. Strehli would befriend a young Stevie Ray Vaughan at Antone’s when he would come to see if Albert King or another one of his idols would walk in.
Vaughan started playing “Texas Flood,” a song Strehli would perform regularly, and it became the title track to his debut album with Double Trouble in 1983. Vaughn would then have Strehli perform with him at many of his important appearancesCarnegie Hall, the CBS Records Convention, Austin City Limits among them. Strehli would then help establish Antone’s Records & Tapes, serving as President, and releasing her debut solo album Soul Shake in 1987. Following her acclaimed Blue Highway in 2005, Strehli eased into a prolonged hiatus… until now.
Angela Strehli has also announced a limited number of 2022 performances celebrating the release of Ace of Blues. The itinerary
features two special engagements on November 15th and 16th at Antone’s in Austin, TX as well as appearances in Houston, Oakland, Santa Cruz, and her home base of Marin County, CA. Please see tour dates below.
Angela Strehli’s Ace of Blues marks the first new release for the relaunched Antone’s Records imprint through New West Records. It will be available across digital retailers & streaming platforms, compact disc, and standard black vinyl. A limited to 500 Blue Vinyl Edition will be available at Independent Retailers and is available for pre-order NOW via NEW WEST RECORDS at http:/ /newwst.com/aceofblues.

Filippo Bellavia’s Zappa in Blues: both an inspiration and a landing place
By Edoardo FassioWhen Frank Zappa formed the Mothers of Invention, the band was looked upon as a blues ensemble. Tom Wilson himself, who in 1966 produced their debut double LP, the seminal “Freak Out!”, took a while to realize that it was not exactly the case. Yet one of the lead songs, “Trouble Every Day”, was the quintessence of the genre, suitable to the times of the Watts riots. Moreover, the Mothers lined up Henry “Sunflower” Vestine, according to Zappa “one of the most imaginative blues guitarists on both coasts”. The two of them got along so well that they even shared a small apartment in L.A., right off Sunset Boulevard, west of La Brea. Just before the release of the album, disappointed that his fellows were taking another route, Sunflower left to start Canned Heat with friend Bob Hite.
Despite FZ’s artistic body making history as music per se, his compositions have been performed in classical,
pop, rock, soul, doo wop or jazz contexts. And in blues, of course, one of its main elements, often recognizable in the harmonic structure, in the solos progressions and in the lyrics themselves, mocking and provocative. It’s hardly surprising the careful re-reading of the master’s scores, known or less known but all close to the spirit if not to the letter of the genre, carried out by musician and careful researcher Filippo Bellavia with his B Street Band.
The group can be seen as a side project to the Ossi Duri (Hard Bones), of which Filippo is father / uncle / manager; a former baby-band still in business but born for fun in 1992, when Frank was still alive and Ruben and Martin, Filippo’s two sons, who already played guitar and drums, were just 6 and 8 years old; today they are established musicians, as is their cousin Monne Bellavia, bassist.
The B Street Band releases Zappa in Blues vol. II, a follow-up to the brilliant first volume of 2008 which also featured Ike Willis, the iconic vocalist at the court of Zappa in the decade 1978-88. Even with a reshuffle in the line-up - now in trio, with Filippo flawless leader on vocals, guitar and harp, Moreno Ciccardi on bass and Alex Jorio on drums - the result is charming. It passionately matches the two noble poles of its search, modernism keen to both transgression and street cred (such as in “Willie the Pimp”) and the devil’s music. There are relevant supporting musicians, too - all from the Turin area: Ossi Duri vocalist and keyboardist Alessandro Armuschio, blues harmonica player Andrea Scagliarini and jazz pianist Fabio Giachino. All ensure the success of the album and add a meaning to one of the paradoxes dear to Filippo: doesn’t Zappa’s music really represent, after all, the latest evolution of the blues?
Filippo Bellavia e Zappa in Blues: ispirazione e punto d’approdo
Come In For The CoffeeStay For The Music - Dosey Doe!
Just north of Houston Texas there is this thriving community known as The Woodlands. On their major freeway, I-45, that runs through the heart of that community sits this really cool barn. Yes, a barn. A barn that pours one of the best cups of coffee around. Dosey Doe The Big Barn is known for class A touring acts by those who have not attended but for those that go there the coffee is to die for…. It’s interesting, when you attend a music event there and you look out over the audience you notice a sea of coffee cups. Yes they have the usual choices of beverages but how often do you see a sea of coffee cups at a major music event? That’s how good it is. The structure itself is a re-construction effort that required
a barn in Kentucky to be disassembled and then reassembled in Texas. Go figure. Who does that? The result is what the state of Texas has described as possibly the best acoustically perfect music hall in the state. In fact act after act that performs there does in fact rave about the acoustics. Additionally, Dosey Doe The Big Barn only seats 410 audience members but the major stars love the place because unlike a major arena they can actually see the audience beyond the lights. That bit of intimacy is what creatives crave and a good listening room offers them the choice to get back to the neighborhood so to speak. So many times the talent buyer and the owner are complimented on the behind the scenes support but also on the acoustics and the artists ask for a bag of coffee to go. An evening out is supposed to be for those that are looking to enjoy themselves and when they leave for home they should have something nice to talk about on the drive. Just as the stars appreciate Dosey Doe so too do those that take in their events. Already the Dosey Doe Big Barn’s upcoming shows are gaining holiday reservations as their list of winter 2022 and most of the new year acts are feeling increased traffic. What a nice way to say Happy Holidays with a gift certificate to one of the upcoming events. By the way Dosey Doe is conveniently located on a major highway with major hotels, shopping, and George Bush International Airport close by. The Woodlands Texas is the chic place for sure. Then a big ole barn smack dab in the middle of all this glitz go figure but it works and it works well. If you are visiting Texas soon put Dosey Doe on your list - chances are someone you enjoy listening to will be on stage while you are in Texas. By the way they ship that coffee too.

Grammy-winning songwriter and producer Daniel Lanois has shared a new track, “Eau,” from his new album Player, Piano. The album features a series of exotic instrumental piano performances and was recorded at Lanois’ studio in Toronto with the help of co-producer Dangerous Wayne Lorenz. Player, Piano was released on September 23rd via Modern Recordings, an imprint of BMG and is currently available for order.

“Eau is the simplest melody on my piano record, it has lullaby and hymn in its spine,” writes Lanois.
“At the halfway mark, I added a little Tibetan cymbal and a dub that took the piece to an exotic place.
Lanois previously released the singles “My All”
( https://daniellanois.lnk.to/myall ) and “Inverness”
( https://daniellanois.lnk.to/inverness ) from Player, Piano.
“Making this record transported me at a time when I couldn’t go anywhere,” Lanois reflects. “I got to travel to Cuba and Mexico and Jamaica. I got to visit with the ghosts of Erik Satie and Oscar Peterson and Harold Budd. I got to go back in time to my work with Brian Eno and Kate Bush and Emmylou Harris. All without ever leaving my studio.”
In order to achieve the timelesssounding recordings on Player, Piano, Lanois and Lorenz set about transforming each of the three pianos in the studio, dampening the strings with tea towels and dulling the percussive impact of the hammers by adding small felt pads to the heads. When it came time to record, they used vintage ribbon mics and arranged them behind the instruments rather than in front in an effort to further soften the sound. “I decided that if I was going to make a piano record, I wanted it to sound like recordings from the ‘40s and ’50s, back when the piano was soft and beautiful,” explains Lanois.
As one of the most acclaimed and influential producers of the modern era, he’s helmed iconic albums for everyone from Bob Dylan and Neil Young to U2 and Peter Gabriel. As a prolific and critically acclaimed songwriter, he’s composed scores for Oscar-winning

Rolling Stone declared that his “unmistakable fingerprints are all over an entire wing of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” (think The Joshua Tree, Wrecking Ball, Time Out Of Mind), while NPR lauded him as the author of his own “brilliant albums of heartfelt songs.”
Player, Piano follows the 2021 release of Lanois’ album Heavy Sun, which received wide acclaim from outlets such as SPIN, World Cafe, No Depression and American Songwriter and more.
Each song on Player, Piano is a portal, an invitation to lose yourself in the moment and disappear into a world of imagination and memory. Melodies unfold slowly with patience and grace; ethereal arrangements drift around them like fog rolling through the mountains.
More than just an album, Player, Piano is a gateway into a cinematic sonic universe full of mystery and wonder, a place where the lines between reality and fantasy blur and deep truths and desires reveal themselves in profound and unexpected ways.

EMELI SANDÉ AND NILE RODGERS
(continued from previous page)
Internationally renowned British singer-songwriter Emeli Sandé shares her latest single, a gloriously upbeat, disco-tinged jam featuring the multiple GRAMMY®-winning composer, producer, arranger and guitarist Nile Rodgers.
Speaking on her latest collaboration, Sandé shares, “I feel greatly privileged to have created with Nile Rodgers. He’s such a legendary musician and producer, a true icon in music. His humility and passion inspired me so much in the making of the music and I feel that the excitement and positivity in the studio transmits through the song. I’m very proud of “When Someone Loves You” and I hope it brings joy to each listener.”
Rodgers added, “I’ve loved working with Emeli over the years as she is such a special talent but I’ve never seen her as happy and full of life as she is right now. She has found herself and it’s beautiful to behold”.
Earlier this year, Emeli Sandé released her critically acclaimed album ‘Let’s Say For Instance,’ available to stream and download now via Chrysalis Records. The full length has amassed an impressive 20+ million streams to date,
and features writing and production by Emeli, alongside collaborations with F A L L E N, Naughty Boy, Booker T, Ollie Green, Henri Davies, and others. ‘Let’s Say For Instance’ marks her first release on an independent label, and a brand-new era of Emeli’s expansive artistry after a decade on stage and on the airwaves. The sixteentrack album includes singles ‘There Isn’t Much’, ‘Brighter Days’, ‘Look What You’ve Done’ ‘Family’, as well as current focus single ‘Ready To Love.’
Listen to ‘Let’s Say For Instance’ here at https://emelisande.com/ lsfi/E
‘Let’s Say For Instance’ sees Emeli opening herself up to a wealth of sonic possibilities, exploring new territory through shades of classical, disco, nostalgic R&B and more. Thematically, inspiration on the album took many forms: from falling madly in love on ‘July 25th’ and ‘September 8th’, to encouraging self confidence on ‘Yes You Can’, describing the lyrics as “the light at the end of the tunnel” digging deeper beyond the often simplified portrayal of mental health and depression, to ‘Another One’, on the conversation of race equality.
With full creative control, it sees Emeli freeing herself from the expectations of others, flexing her holistic skills as a musician, songwriter, producer and vocalist in new, versatile ways. In her words: “‘an ode to resilience, rebirth, and renewal”.
Emeli Sandé is one of Britain’s most successful living songwriters. Her debut album Our Version of Events, which sold over 5.4 million copies to date, was the biggest selling album in the UK of 2012 and the second biggest selling of 2013, and is certified platinum eight times in the UK and Ireland. Emeli followed it with critically acclaimed Long Live The Angels in
2016, the Kingdom Coming EP in 2017 and Real Life which hit the top 10 in 2019. With 19 million singles sold including 3 x UK No. 1 singles, 6 million albums and four BRIT awards (including Best Female twice), Emeli received an MBE for Services to Music in 2018 and in July 2019 she became the University of Sunderland’s Chancellor. In between her own records, she has recently collaborated with UK rap and grime giants, including Bugzy Malone’s ‘Welcome to the Hood’ and Ghett’s ‘Sonya’, featured on his Mercury Prizenominated record Conflict of Interest. Other collaborations that span Emeli’s career include Kendrick Lamar, Giggs, Loski, Wretch 32, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Jools Holland, Nile Rodgers and many more.

Supreme Swedish Metal Band SHINING Signs with Napalm Records
SHINING is certainly one of the most controversial and musically brilliant bands in the scene. Mastermind Niklas Kvarforth has never made a secret of his mental illnesses and other psychological issues, thus, themes such as self-destruction, suicide and violence play an important role in the band’s music. Over the course of ten studio albums, including masterpieces such as the acclaimed V. Halmstad and Redefining Darkness, SHINING has garnered a large and loyal following who adore the musical genius and eccentric nature of Niklas Kvarforth.
It would not be appropriate to force SHINING into a musical genre. They root their main musical influences in black metal, but combine it incomparably with influences from various far-reaching genres such as classical music, jazz and progressive rock. SHINING’s music conjures grim moods, aching wounds and deep emptiness. Napalm Records welcomes one of the darkest, most sinister and original bands in the genre today to their roster.
SHINING mastermind Niklas Kvarforth on the Signing:
“Markus Rödl and I proudly announce today that we have reached an agreement with Napalm Records, who will release our upcoming 11th album in conspiracy with The Sinister Initiative in early 2023. A year in which the world will be force-fed a brand new, and for once suitable horrific stage show capable of visualizing our brand of darkness, new videos by brother Claudio Marino, as well as another thing or two which will inspire as well as disgust.”
Napalm Records A&R Sebastian Münch states:
“Napalm Records is proud and honored to partner with one of the most influential black metal bands in the world. Very few bands understand the core essence of black metal like SHINING does. I am excited to join SHINING with the new album release, to explore and push new creative boundaries.”

Multi-platinum selling, GRAMMY® Award nominated artist Tove Lo is back today with the official music video for ‘2 Die 4’, the latest single off her highly anticipated fifth studio album DIRT FEMME, out October 14th via Pretty Swede Records/ mtheory.
Speaking about the new video, Tove reveals, “We wanted to make a pop bitch y2k experience. With all the choreo, the outfits, the wetness. I think we more than delivered.”
An irresistible and undeniable club banger, ‘2 Die 4’ has both fans and press alike gushing, with PAPER hailing the track “a spectacular shot of adrenaline in pop song form,” and leading Pitchfork to laud Tove as “a brutally consistent marksman,” and NYLON to proclaim, “Tove Lo’s singlehandedly reviving Eurodance.”
The iconic track samples the equally iconic ‘Popcorn’ hook, originally released by Hot Butter in 1972, and marks Tove’s first time ever incorporating a sample. Speaking about the song, she explains, “With ‘2 Die 4’ I wanted ‘instantly iconic’ energy. I’ve never sampled anything before, and this feels like the perfect first moment. Lyrically I wanted it to be that ‘pick me up when I’m feeling down’ song. At first, it’s like a warm hug, then you shake it off, let out a scream and start dancing!”
‘2 Die 4’ serves as the follow up to ‘True Romance,’ a powerful and emotionally-wrought ballad, featuring some of her most impressive vocal work to date, with The FADER heaping on the praise, stating “Dancefloor catharsis is no longer the endgame in this gorgeous ballad,” and adding “Tove Lo delivers one of the best vocal performances of her career,” and Billboard proclaiming “with continued on next page

Tove Lo embodies every side of her own femininity in her music. She can be powerful in one breath and lusty in the next. Her cleverness will turn into introspection just before she makes herself heard again. She fights hard and loves even harder. Tove has always spoken her mind, and it’s why she’s left an ever-expanding imprint on pop. The Sweden-born and Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and artist made waves worldwide with her platinum-certified 2014 full-length debut, Queen of the Clouds, uplifted by the quintupleplatinum “Habits (Stay High)” and double-platinum “Talking Body.” Among numerous collaborations, she joined forces with Nick Jonas for the platinum “Close” and Flume on the gold-certified “Say It” in addition to anthems with Alesso, Coldplay, Martin Garrix, Charli XCX, Sean Paul, ALOK,, and Major Lazer, to name a few. In the midst of sold out shows on multiple continents, she served up Lady Wood [2016] and Blue
Lips (Lady Wood Phase II) [2017] before reaching another stratosphere on 2019’s Sunshine Kitty. It landed on year-end lists from the likes of Esquire and Idolator, while Pitchfork proclaimed, “Sunshine Kitty holds some of Tove Lo’s most vulnerable writing; it’s also her clubbiest record.” Meanwhile, she garnered her second GRAMMY® Award nomination with “Glad He’s Gone” in the category of “Best Music Video.” As a songwriter behind-the-scenes, she’s penned music for everyone from Lorde to Zara Larsson in addition to co-writing Ellie Goulding’s quintuple-platinum “Love Me Like You Do” for Fifty Shades of Grey, receiving nominations at the Golden Globe®Awards and the GRAMMY® Awards. Now, Tove realizes a new strength within femininity on a series of singles for her own Pretty Swede Records/mtheory and more to come.

British experimental electric outfit Fujiya & Miyagi shares “Slight Variations,” the title track and second single off their forthcoming LP, Slight Variations.
“Slight Variations” is a strutting piece of disco-funk-pop, featuring the backing vocals of Everything Shook. Inspired by equal parts disco and house, the track’s bassline also nods specifically to Charanjit Singh’s proto-acid classic “Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat.”
Fujiya & Miyagi - “Slight Variations” [OFFICIAL LYRIC VIDEO] Video Concept and Animation by Bob Brown
“We wanted to make a record that shows where we were, where we are, and where we will go in the future,” says David Best of Fujiya & Miyagi. “I like the idea that if someone were new to us and they played this record it would convey everything that we are about.”
To convey the almost 20-year career of the band is to take a deep dive into all forms of electronic music — from pop to house to disco to acid — along with nods to 1970s Germany, psychedelia, funk and art pop. And that’s exactly what this record does, while also capturing the duality of a band who can craft meticulously constructed studio music as seamlessly as they can lock into unpredictable yet infectious grooves on stage. “Slight Variations tries to capture the sound of both sides of the group,” says Best.
The opening “Slight Variations” is a strutting piece of disco-funk-pop, featuring the backing vocals of Everything Shook. Inspired by equal parts disco and house the track’s bassline also nods specifically to Charanjit Singh’s proto-acid classic Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat. The following “Non-Essential Worker” changes gear into a driving, propulsive and futuristic motorik rhythm, recalling Neu! If they had been given a 2022 studio to work in. “We’ve always been tied to our love of music that came out of Germany in the seventies,” says Best. “But have equally tried to keep it at arm’s length in order to become our own thing. This is a bit from column A and a bit from column B.”
Elsewhere, “New Body Language” incorporates 1970s West African funk and high life around a house music template, while “FAQ” sees the group’s first foray into playing with dub reggae, albeit filtered through the band’s typically subtle and innovative approach - resulting in a deeply unique and atmospheric piece of music. “A few years ago, I had a few epiphanies, and one was falling head over heels with reggae,” says Best. “We tried to incorporate this without it being clumsy or incongruous. It’s probably the song I’m

(continued from previous page)
most happy with on the record.” Lyrically, it’s a contemplative track about “heading down the wrong side of middle age, dribbling to the corner flag of life, wasting precious minutes until the end of what we hope will be extra time.”
This is a theme that recurs somewhat, with Best and co. seemingly taking stock of life and where the band is at. Even the album title is something that looks back on the lineage and perception of the band’s career. “There’s two meanings behind Slight Variations as a title,” says Best. “The first being how although biologically we are pretty much the same it’s the differences that tend to define us and cause friction and misunderstandings. The second is a nod to the suggestion that all our records sound similar to one another, when they all sound quite different to me. There’s a thread running through everything we do but we’ve always tried to push things forward.”
Despite the album being one that is rooted in some reflection, it’s ultimately one that has an eye firmly on the horizon, as typified by tracks such as “Oops” which, once again, is clearly breaking into new sonic territory for the band. “At first, ‘Oops’ may feel incongruous as it has a very different feel than the other songs,” Best says of the track which merges pulsing electronics, rippling guitars, and an almost sci-fi esque hue to it. “But I think it’s nice to be jolted into a new sensibility within the course of a record.”
Ultimately, this same feeling of being jolted into a new sensibility one minute while appreciating the subtle evolutions of the band the next, can be heard across the entirety of the album. “I feel this record encapsulates the essence of the group, from its beginnings to new places,” says Best.
Also, a little bit of taking stock has been beneficial for the creative output and future of the band. “There’s a strong desire to leave something good behind you when you are no longer here,” Best says. “To create things that wouldn’t have existed if you had never been born. That and wanting to make people dance, of course.”

Rina Sawayama Goes Out On Tour In Support Of Her New Album Hold That Girl
RINA SAWAYAMA SHARES NEW SINGLE “PHANTOM” •
LISTEN HERE AT rinasawayama.ffm.to/holdthegirl
PRE-ORDER/SAVE Hold The Girl At rinasawayama.ffm.to/holdthegirl
To continue building anticipation for her forthcoming sophomore album Hold The Girl due September 16th via Dirty Hit, British-Japanese pop sensation Rina Sawayama shares the new single “Phantom.” The emotive power ballad provides an additional taste of the myriad of influences Rina touches on in Hold The Girl and comes alongside a visualizer of Rina pouring her heart out through the lyrics. “Phantom” also arrives on the heels of Rina gracing the covers of V Magazine, The Guardian Film & Music, Music Week, and Who What Wear, where she discusses her rising pop stardom.
Rina shares about the meaning behind “Phantom”, “I realized as an adult that I have spent my whole life pleasing other people and not realizing it – constantly pushing my boundaries and not realizing the difference between what I wanted to do and what other people wanted from me. Through the lyrics in the verse I’m trying to tell this story and then in the choruses I’m morning the loss of my real self.”
Rina recently announced her North American headline tour set for this Novem-
ber. The 13-date run will see Rina playing iconic venues like the Great Hall at Avant Gardner in New York City, Roadrunner in Boston, The Eastern in Atlanta, and the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles. Rina’s North American tour will follow her UK and Ireland dates this October, where multiple dates are already or nearly sold out, like her O2 Brixton Academy date, marking a legendary moment in the pop star’s career. Rina will also be playing a limited capacity intimate show with Banquet Records,
photo credit Charlotte RutherfordKingston on September 14th ahead of her album release that Friday. Tickets are on sale now HERE.
Hold The Girl showcases Rina’s talent for bending huge chart influences and blockbuster melodies to her will with precision-tuned songwriting and powerful vocals. The 13-tracks of Hold The Girl will feature the previously released singles “This Hell,” which debuted with a performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, along with “Catch Me In The Air” and the title track “Hold The Girl”, which came with an Ali Kurr directed video and portrays Rina stuck in a time loop within the bounds of a 19th-century farmhouse until she finally breaks free.
Hold The Girl follows Rina’s critically acclaimed debut SAWAYAMA and will see Rina once again juxtapose intimate storytelling with arena-sized songs creating another ambitious and original album to excite fans and critics alike. Written and recorded over the last ??year and a half, Rina teamed up with long-term collaborators Clarence Clarity and Lauren Aquilina as well as enlisting help from the likes of the legendary Paul Epworth (Adele, Florence & the Machine), Stuart Price (Dua Lipa, The Killers, Madonna) and Marcus Andersson (Demi Lovato, Ashnikko) for their magic touch. The product of Rina and these collective minds coming together is an album that melds influences from across the pop spectrum and is a bold and honest statement of Rina’s personal evolution; coming to terms with her own past and the jubilation of turning to the future.
In 2020, Rina’s debut album SAWAYAMA became one of the most critically acclaimed albums that year landing on over 50 album of the year lists, including the New York Times (#2), The Guardian (#3) and Rolling Stone (#6). The last 18 months have seen Rina Sawayama achieve a magnitude of milestones including changing the Mercury Prize and BRITs eligibility rules which meant Non-British artists could apply if they have been a permanent resident in the UK for more than 5 years. In 2021 Elton John joined forces with the pop star to release a special rendition of “Chosen Family,” a powerful and emotional ode to her LGBTQ+ family. Elsewhere Rina injected new life into Lady Gaga’s instant club classic “Free Woman.” 2023 will see Rina in her film acting debut as she stars in John Wick 4 alongside Keanu Reeves.

Tony Glausi Releases Deluxe Version of Album Everything At Once Out Now via Outside in Music
“Glausi masterfully blends elements from jazz, soul, retro-pop, and hip-hop.” - Earmilk
“EVERYTHING AT ONCE is an emotional rollercoaster of sound and sentiment, one well worth the price of admission.” - American Songwriter
“[Glausi marries] his jazz influences with velveteen R&B beats and honeyed neo-soul vocals.“Under the Radar
September 2, 2022: Today, Tony Glausi released the new deluxe version of his album EVERYTHING AT ONCE. Originally released last year, EVERYTHING AT ONCE features straight-tothe-gut pop jams and R&B-influenced tunes that take inspiration from a bevy of sources. So far the album has been acclaimed by Soulbounce, Under the Radar, Sonofmarketing, NYS Music, Earmilk, American Songwriter, and Ghettoblaster, who said “Glausi evokes his vast inspiration of pop and R&B while remaining uniquely true to himself.” The deluxe version of EVERYTHING AT ONCE features three new songs — “Nuestro Amor,” and remixes of album tracks “Backseat Bump” and “Celeste Inmensidad.”
“All of the songs from Everything At Once were written and produced in 2019-2020, each one encapsulating a different chapter of my life,” explains Glausi. “This first deluxe track, ‘Nuestro Amor,’ was co-written with Nana Mendoza in January of 2020 and originally meant to be released on her then-upcoming album, which was never actually finished. The second deluxe track is my first ever remix, a dance spin-off of ‘Backseat Bump’ done by ZENG and Tompkins and featuring rhymes from the incredible Dizzy Senze. The third and final deluxe track is an avant remix of “Celeste Inmensidad” done by The Grand Mess, an artist who co-produced 4 other tracks on the original. The EVERYTHING AT ONCE story is now officially complete!”
Raised in Portland, Oregon and currently based in New York City, Tony Glausi is widely known for his accomplishments as a trumpet player — but on Everything At Once, Glausi sheds some

of his skin as an instrumentalist and firmly establishes his prowess as a bandleader, producer, songwriter, and singer.
“Writing EVERYTHING AT ONCE, I felt like the project wasn’t about me. It wasn’t about Tony, the trumpet player. I just wanted to make fucking songs,” Glausi explains. “I sing on three of them, but I just wanted to produce the music and ultimately let my collaborators shine,” he adds. Guests on EVERYTHING AT ONCE include singer/saxophonist Braxton Cook, Latin GRAMMY-nominated Nana Mendoza, Brooklyn-based singer Elysse, rapper Charlemagne the Goddess, and UK vocalist Max Milner.
EVERYTHING AT ONCE is a cinematic full-length production brimming with confidence, introducing Tony Glausi the polymath. “Coming out of high school and studying music in college, I was pretty fixated on jazz trumpet playing, and my earlier releases were heavily oriented around improvisation and swing,” Glausi explains. “But as I continue to write and explore new sounds, I feel like I get closer and closer to my true voice, one record at a time.”
EVERYTHING AT ONCE is an album of places, faces, and interactions. Quite simply, Tony Glausi has created a mixtape to his life, thanks, in part, to his willingness to try anything.
Tracklisting:

Judicator
(continued from previous page)
Two years on from their 2020 fulllength Let There Be Nothing, JUDICATOR have today returned and announced their forthcoming sixth studio album, The Majesty of Decay, set for release via Prosthetic Records on November 25. Refreshed and revitalized the US power metal group are now primed and proud to share the lead single and accompanying music video, The High Priestess, which is premiering now via Metal Injection.
Speaking on the premiere, the band comments: “The High Priestess is daring, it’s catchy, and so refreshing too! It’s our best idea of what it would look like if Tom Jones did heavy metal. We could have chosen any number of safe songs to introduce the new album, but we wanted to throw our fans a curveball. The rest of the album has plenty of speed, riffs, and prog, but only The High Priestess has a full brass section.
“This song embodies the spirit of JUDICATOR these days — fresh and fun, but incredibly sincere. We really hope you enjoy the single and music video! Pre-order The Majesty of Decay and check us out on Patreon!”
As with past releases, The Majesty of Decay is a concept album. But while most JUDICATOR albums have been based on history, this one takes an entirely different direction. The album’s story connects with At the Expense of Humanity, the band’s third album, which recounts singer John Yelland’s experiences watching his older brother die after a long, drawn out battle with cancer.
Whilst the album’s story remains somewhat shrouded in mystery, JUDICATOR utilizes compelling plot devices as a means to encourage fans to piece together the album’s metacontextual threads. What we do know, however, is that The Majesty of Decay explores the subjects of love, family, and the transformation of suffering into something meaningful. JUDICATOR invites you to step into this world and
contemplate how the story might relate to you. The album is a carefully constructed puzzle of mirrors and metaphor that cries out for JUDICATOR fans everywhere to solve it.
What began as a humble homage to their mutual love of Blind Guardian, JUDICATOR have quickly grown into something that has continually had fans begging for more, with JUDICATOR more happy to oblige. With this latest offering, JUDICATOR have delivered yet another thought provoking album that fits nicely into their discography.
With members spread across the United States, recording for The Majesty of Decay was certainly unique. Drums were engineered and recorded by Alex Bosson (Helion Prime, Lunar, Planeswalker). Brass was engineered and recorded by Michael Sasich at Man vs. Music. The album was edited by Will Salazar at Revenant Sound Studios. Reamping and mixing was completed by Carlos Alvarez at Dirty Viking Audio Production. Mastering and sequencing was completed by Brett Caldas-Lima at
Tower Studio. In addition, the album features Angel Chatzitheodorou (Angel Wolf-Black, ex-Bare Infinity), whose elegant, powerful voice soars through much of the song Judgment. The beautiful, eerie artwork by Marc Whisnant completes the package.
The ten tracks that comprise The Majesty of Decay are haunting, progressive, and command attention through their adventurous, emotionally cathartic storytelling and pervasive, dynamic atmosphere.
The Majesty of Decay tracklist:

4. Daughter of Swords
5. Ursa Minor

Patriarchy Talks About Their New Album
I fell out of my strong ritualistic routine and into a chaotic semi-relationship full of amazing sex and non-verbal interactions. An Understanding could never be reached. There was no Control. There was nothing but carnality and confusion; it became my obsession, projection, fantasy and failure. It became my Unself.
To get through the pain of projection of wanting someone I cannot have/ should not have or whatever the hell that thing the kids call “love” is... I shut myself off for a month (during quarantine which made it easy), focused on the addiction (whilst abstaining), and wrote about 30 demos about it. I worked in the studio with Matia Simovich of Inhalt (producer) and John Fryer of This Mortal Coil etc (producer/mixer). So much power came from a scheduled, daytime, organized process. I became secure in my self again. I got over the guy- through the songs! But of course, as soon as I was “strong” and alone again, someone else swooped in to pull me back down. But luckily, I was still in the studio, so I just added that dude to the album also.
This is when I realized- wow -Pain REALLY IS Pleasure. Once you realize thisand you realize that you will never know anything truly at all ... it is actually an amazing release. Yes! The ancient philosophers are partially right! There IS something to hold on to in Life - even if it is complete Nothingness. That Nothingness is Everything. That Nothingness is Love...
I was always against the word- and I still am, but now I’ve written about it. I’ve become the characters. I’m the victim and the predator in one- the pain that makes the pleasure work, the mystery of an aggressive Nature. Nature- loving and destroying you with a congratulatory confetti surprise as the blade digs up under your ribs, as the earthquake smothers, the fire illuminates and consumes. I accept The Archetypes lodged deep in the primordial brain and the bloody curls of the androgynous Dionysus. We kill for the thing which devours us. We give in to The Unself.
The guy I wrote most of the songs about, he’s heard all of them, and he loves them. He’s like, “Is this one about me? Oh wow!” In that very interaction I started to get myself back. I’ve gone to the cave and found my dragon. I’ve fucked him, I’ve loved him, and I’ve learned from him- but I did not kill him... because this is the blood of the love song. I must remove the veil behind the armor; move forward and look this thing
straight in the eyes as I fuck him. Listen to him speak as I kiss him; To see the smile of beasteal evolution through his alluring teeth...T o study him after the physical struggle; To become him through my art... To merge Into The Unself.
More About Patriarchy
Los Angeles three-piece Patriarchy explores themes of sex, power, subversion, and death. Drawing inspiration from interests in everything from Ancient Greek Mythology to 80’s slasher films, Patriarchy is a heavy dose of Mulholand Drive with a sound that is equal parts ABBA and NIN. Patriarchy is spearheaded by NSFW filmmaker Actually Huizenga and completed with fellow platinum blondes, her vampiric boy toys, “The Drummer” and “TheGuitarist”(they wish to remain anonymous to protect their families). Dazed describes Patriarchy as a “wholly disconcerting experience… in the best way possible”.

Jake Bugg Celebrates
It’s hard to believe that it’s been ten years since Jake Bugg released his extraordinary self- titled debut album. Released on October 15th, 2012, Jake introduced himself to the world and blew open the doors with an exquisite debut that rocketed to number one on the U.K. Album Chart, going on to sell over a million copies, bagging both a BRIT Award and Mercury Music Prize nomination. Since then he’s become one of the U.K.’s most prolific and established songwriters.
Fast forward ten years, with countless awards, record sales and sold out tours across the world, Jake is to celebrate the 10th Anniversary with the release of special deluxe editions of the album on 2LP black vinyl, Limited Edition 2LP, Gold Vinyl and a 3CD - out October 14th, 2022. Pre-order here at https:// jakebugg.lnk.to/JB-10
‘I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since album one,” Jake said of the anniversary. “Time has flown so fast so it’s been a real pleasure to go through the old unreleased tracks, videos and photographs and put this box set together. I love the end result and I hope you will too.”
The set comes fully remastered at Abbey Road Studios with a second LP of two rare and fourteen previously unreleased tracks from Jake’s early recording sessions from his personal archive.
The CD edition will feature the remastered album, sixteen unreleased bonus tracks including a Rick Rubin version of “Broken,” and the full performance of his concert at the Royal Albert Hall from 2014, being made available physically and digitally for the first time. All formats will feature sleeve notes from Dean Jackson (BBC Radio Nottingham), who discovered Jake, and unseen images from Jake’s photoshoot with Kevin Westenberg.

Two Shadows is as unique as it is memorable and catchy. The record thrusts, retreats, and beguiles across its melody-powered and hook-driven expanse, with earworms “The Call,” “Guilty Ones,” and “The Knowing” serving as the album’s crucial lighthouses.
Formed in Portland, Oregon, in 2020, oaxed’s initial songwriting plan casts a wide net. The breach opened up considerably as Coffel and Keo explored the outer edges of their musical influences and artistic aspirations. After fruitful songwriting sessions, the twosome self-released their eponymous four- song EP in February 2021. Signaled by the whirring, diaphanous spell of video single “Candle Master”, oaxed caught the attention of Relapse Records, who signed the outfit in 2021. As a live act, the pair has already hit the ground running, rocking the stage with Unto Others, Blackwater Holylight, and Amorphis, and hailed as an “absolute riot on stage.” (Metal Insider)

Megadeth has also unleashed their official single ”Soldier On!” from their new studio album The Sick, The Dying…And The Dead!
An instant Megadeth classic, “Soldier On!” is an example – among many – of the band’s ability to blend stylistic elements from both the metal AND rock ends of the musical spectrum. While Megadeth are rightfully regarded as the world’s ‘State of the Art Speed Metal Band’, from their earliest days some of the band’s biggest songs have arisen

when they’ve let off the gas pedal, while still maintaining the aggression. Dave Mustaine explains, “Coming to the realization that you need to walk away from a relationship that’s very toxic, and how hard it can be to start down that road. But you know you need to, and just taking that first step is the hardest part. Whatever your leaving does to them, you have to block that part out, stay the
course and do what’s right for you. It will be hard in the beginning, but you have got to live for yourself to be worth a damn to anyone else. You’ve got to Soldier On!”
Megadeth’s official single “Soldier On!” impacted Active Rock Radio on August 16 and can be listened to, here at https:// youtu.be/q5M8K2Jm2bE.
The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead! consolidates a furious return to form that began with the Grammy® winning- Dystopia, while pushing forward musically and marking Mustaine’s recent triumph over throat cancer. Reuniting visionary Megadeth leader and sonic architect Dave Mustaine with co-producer Chris Rakestraw (Danzig, Parkway Drive), who together helmed 2016’s Dystopia, the album was recorded at Mustaine’s home studio in Nashville, Tennessee, with guitarist Kiko Loureiro and drummer Dirk Verbeuren. Bassist Steve DiGiorgio temporarily stepped in to record the album–with the kick off of Megadeth’s recent tour, Megadeth-alumni James LoMenzo rejoined the Megadeth family as permanent bass player.
“For the first time in a long time, everything that we needed on this record is right in its place,” Dave Mustaine enthused. “I can’t wait for the public to get hold of this!”
Featuring some of Mustaine’s strongest songwriting while also incorporating writing from the rest of the band, The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead! brings together everything that’s exhilarating and distinctive about Megadeth. From the blistering throwback fury of “Night Stalkers” (featuring icon Ice-T) and first single “We’ll Be Back,” to the more mid-tempo and melodic “Soldier On!,” and the very personal title track, with its enthralling twists and turns.
The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead! melds the ultra-frenetic riffing, fiercely intricate solos, and adventurous spirit the quartet are known for, all laced with signature virtuosity and precision and Mustaine’s singular sardonic snarl. This album combines all the crushing musical motifs that have made Megadeth both repeat metal disruptors and revered genre flagbearers.
Megadeth have recently revealed their roadmap into the web3 space, offering expanded Cyber Army fan club experiences. The first NFT drop will be a generative collection called RATTLEHEADS, pulling from nearly 40 years of iconic Vic Rattlehead themes and imagery. Fans can join the official Megadeth Discord to stay up to date at https://discord.com/invite/megadeth.
“For the first time in a long time, everything that we needed on this record is right in its place,” mulls visionary Megadeth leader and musical architect Dave Mustaine of his band’s incendiary 16th studio album, The Sick, The Dying... And The Dead! “I can’t wait for the public to get hold of this!”
Released by UMe on September 2, 2022, The Sick, The Dying... And The Dead! further establishes Megadeth as a band that has both defined and repeatedly redefined heavy metal since formation, and which

follows up 2016’s Grammy®-winning Dystopia, which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 (Megadeth’s highest chart position since its 1992 classic Countdown to Extinction).
Megadeth has crafted a record with a visceral energy, heaviness, and sometimes paranormal pace that few would expect from such a seasoned band with so little to prove. The Sick, The Dying... And The Dead! melds the ultra-frenetic riffing, fiercely intricate guitar solos, and adventurous spirit of the quartet’s groundbreaking early output with the musicality and melodicism of its ‘90s songwriting, all laced with signature virtuosity and precision – plus, of course, Mustaine’s singular vocal snarl and wry, takeno-shit lyrical vitriol.
Both defying Mustaine’s recent battle with throat cancer and celebrating his defeat of the disease, The Sick, The Dying... And The Dead! counterintuitively thrived on delays and cancelled tours resulting from both his illness and the worldwide pandemic.
“The fact that we had so much time to work on it benefitted the songs in the end, because they kept evolving,” notes drummer Dirk Verbeuren. “Parts kept being refined; the ‘ear candy’ and the little details just kept getting better.”
After his departure from Metallica, having co-written many songs that would appear on their first two albums, the ultrahungry 21-year-old Mustaine conceived a new band, Megadeth, which would harness the cinematic songcraft of the new wave of British heavy metal to radically faster tempos, heightened technical agility, complex arrangements, and punk’s primeval aggression.
“The utmost heaviest, ultra-furious band that I could come up with at that time,” he recalls. “When we came out, there weren’t a lot of bands that were doing what we were doing. There still aren’t a lot of bands that are doing what we’re doing.”
Mustaine’s rare gift for guitar (ranked #1 in 2009 book The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists), ahead-of-his-time sonic ambi-
tions, and superhuman drive put Megadeth among the legendary pioneers of thrash metal, known as the “Big Four.” Establishing themselves immediately with the release of their legendary debut Killing Is my Business… And Business Is Good, a series of platinum-selling album soon followed, earning them household-name status. To date, Megadeth has sold over 50 million albums globally, including the double-platinum Countdown to Extinction, and received twelve Grammy® nominations. The band’s uncompromisingly fierce yet fastidious live shows have become benchmarks for heavy metal performance worldwide.
Yet even amid this lofty legacy and Megadeth’s prodigious catalog, The Sick, The Dying ... and The Dead! stands apart on multiple levels. Mustaine’s cancer was detected shortly after pre- production began, but he didn’t let that derail the recording. “He’s a fighter,” recalls guitarist Louriero. “Because besides his chemo day [each week], he was always there!” It’s also the first

Megadeth album to feature Kiko Louriero, who debuted on Dystopia, drummer Verbeuren and bassist Steve DiGiorgio (Testament), who temporarily stepped in to record the album–with the kickoff of Megadeth’s recent tour, alumni James LoMenzo rejoined the Megadeth family and is now the permanent bass player.
Mustaine once again opted to coproduce the album with Chris Rakestraw (Danzig, Parkway Drive) in Nashville, reuniting the winning team behind Dystopia, which has scanned over 440K units and scooped the 2017 Grammy® for Best Metal Performance for its title track. “Chris and I have an understanding of what a Megadeth record is supposed to sound like,” he explains. “And his work ethic is a lot like mine: we worked hard; he worked harder.”
Featuring some of Mustaine’s strongest-ever songwriting, including collabs with bandmates, The Sick, The Dying... And The Dead! brings together everything that’s exhilarating and distinctive about Megadeth. From the blistering throwback fury of “Night Stalkers” (featuring the iconic Ice-T) and first single “We’ll Be Back,” to the more mid-
tempo and melodic “Soldier On!” and the very personal title track, with its enthralling twists and turns.
As always with Megadeth, every riff is meticulously fashioned to constantly crescendo, with new harmonic elements endlessly manifesting and every detail structured for maximum musical and emotional effect. Yet, through all of the album’s moods and movements, Megadeth never loses the crucial groove that binds the band members to one another and the foursome to its audience.
The Sick, The Dying... And The Dead! is a relentlessly caffeinated, riff-fueled romp of a record in its technical prowess, ambitious arrangements, staggering guitar solos, and nihilistic yet eloquent lyricism. Acoustic intros and interludes, a sense of progressive adventure, and Mustaine’s trademark sociopolitical commentary round-out the record.
“This record could easily sit between Countdown and [1990’s] Rust in Peace,” says Mustaine. “The musicality that we started to add to Megadeth songs around Countdown to Extinction is pretty prevalent with this record,
while it still has a lot of the aggression that Rust in Peace had.”
Since those landmark albums, Megadeth has experimented with myriad sounds, songwriting styles, and riff arrangements, forever pushing the envelope of what we know as heavy metal. But with its newer members providing almost a fan’s perspective of what’s made the band so enduring, The Sick, The Dying... And The Dead! encapsulates the restless musical hydra that is Megadeth on one record like never before.
The album captures all the tribal, bonding magic of being alongside thousands of fellow fans at Megadeth concert, even when listened to at home alone or on earbuds. It’s a motivating soundtrack to our greatest achievements and the solace through our alltime lows – or simply that invigorating album you stick on during your dour commute to escape to another place altogether.
“People don’t make records the way they used to; they don’t make a whole piece of art,” Mustaine explains. “But I think the metal community wants to honor itself and have something that’s unique to ourselves –that sets us apart and rewards the people in this community for their hard work and their perseverance and their loyalty to one another.”
Released on the heels of Megadeth’s rapturously received Metal Tour of the Year alongside Lamb of God, plus numerous highprofile European festival appearances, and an upcoming North American tour with Five Finger Death Punch, The Sick, The Dying... And The Dead! cements the latest electrifying chapter in a career that has constantly challenged and surprised.
“I don’t think we’re nearing the end, not even remotely,” Mustaine concludes. “I feel more energized now that I have in decades.”
Appropriately, the album closes with “We’ll Be Back” ...
Megadeth is Dave Mustaine – lead guitar & vocals, Kiko Louriero – lead guitar, Dirk Verbeuren – drums, and James LoMenzo – bass

Beach Boy Co-founder Al
Al Jardine’s acclaimed debut solo album, A Postcard from California, is now available digitally for streaming and download worldwide via UMe, just ahead of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and legendary co-founder of The Beach Boys’ 80th birthday tomorrow, September 3rd. Originally released in 2010 on CD and again in 2012 with two bonus tracks, “Waves of Love” and “Sloop John B (A Pirate’s Tale),” the much-sought-after record hasn’t been available digitally for several years and is making its streaming debut. The album quickly sold out when released on limited edition translucent blue vinyl for Record Store Day in 2018.
“I can’t believe it’s been twelve years since Postcard came out and I thank everyone involved in the production and creation of this album to help me get my songs out there,” says Al Jardine. “Brian’s advice to aspiring young songwriters has always been ‘finish your songs’ so I took it to heart and I hope everyone who has listened to A Postcard from California feels my excitement and enthusiasm for this great land and sea of ours and our need to protect it forever. Thank you for all your support over the years, it is greatly appreciated and I will continue to dedicate Postcard to all the pets we love and who love us back!”
Recorded at Jardine’s own Red Barn Studios in Big Sur, Calif., A Postcard from California touches upon California’s history, natural beauty and other environmental issues. The 15-song collection includes several songs that speak to the relationship of man and his environment. “Don’t Fight The Sea,” “Tidepool Interlude” and “A California Saga” are songs that reflect Jardine’s deep love for the California coastline and his concern for the ecological health of the planet, which more than a decade after its initial release resonates as strongly today as ever. Jardine has always embodied that concern for the environment, and the coastline and ocean in particular. Previously, on the Beach Boys’ Surf’s Up album, he and Mike Love wrote the song, “Don’t Go Near the Water.” The track “Lookin’ Down the

Coast” is a tale of the discovery of California by the Spanish, as seen through the eyes of its natural inhabitants, the California condor, the whale, the otter and the bear.
Specially for this digital release, Jardine has included a previously unreleased, newly remastered and extended version of the bonus track “Waves of Love,” which features former Beach Boys bandmate Carl Wilson in one of his last recorded studio vocals ever.
A Postcard from California was largely penned by Jardine who enlisted a slew of his famous friends to help him bring this album to life, including Alec Baldwin, David Crosby, Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley of America, Flea, Glen Campbell, John Stamos, Neil Young, Richie Cannata, Stephen Stills, and Steve Miller. The album also served as a reunion of sorts for The Beach Boys as it brought Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Bruce Johnston, along with a lead vocal by Carl Wilson, together on the song “Don’t Fight The Sea” several years before the band would reunite for an album and tour in celebration of their 50th anniversary in 2012. Jardine’s sons, Adam and Matt Jardine, also sing on the album, which was co-produced by musicians Stevie Heger and Scott Slaughter.
“‘Don’t Fight the Sea’ started a long time ago with a Canadian friend of mine, Terry Jacks, who was kind enough to allow me to rewrite his song for a solo album that Mike Love and I were planning around an ecology theme. I asked Matt Jardine to help me with the lyrics. I always envisioned it to be the quintessential environmental song, a big statement, but I could never get all the guys together to finish it. I started with Carl, Bruce (Johnston) and myself on backgrounds, then years later Brian put on his falsetto, and just recently Mike recorded his baritone signature line. To top it all off, I added Matt and friend Scott Mathews to the track, to give additional vocal support to the core group; all this over a period of thirty-plus years. I guess persistence pays off!”
“Don’t Fight The Sea” (also released as a 7” single on white vinyl on Record Store Day 2011 to help raise funds for Japan disaster relief) is just one of the many highlights of the album that also includes inspired versions of Beach Boys’ classics “Help Me, Rhonda” and “A California Saga” and a heartfelt rendition of The Mamas & The Papas’ biggest hit, “California Dreamin’,” a duet with one-time Beach Boy Glen Campbell who famously filled in for Brian Wilson on tour from December 1964-March 1965. Campbell also lends his unmistakable voice to the ebullient album opener title track.
“Help Me, Rhonda” gets quite a blues makeover as Jardine
shares vocals with Steve Miller on the Brian Wilson-penned track that reached No. 1 on the Billboard Top 100 for the Beach Boys in 1965 on the strength of Jardine’s unforgettable lead vocal. Adding to the blues feel is harmonica by the late virtuoso Norton Buffalo. Jardine’s reworking of “A California Saga,” his song from the Beach Boys’ 1973 album, Holland, features Neil Young on co-lead vocals with Jardine and backing vocals by David Crosby and Stephen Stills along with Adam and Matt Jardine. Young also sings on “Campfire Scene” which follows Alec Baldwin’s spoken word narration of a Stephen John Kalinich poem on “Tidepool Interlude” that leads into “A California Saga.”
A Postcard from California also includes “Sloop John B (A Pirate’s Tale)” which was originally released alongside Jardine’s award-winning children’s book of the same name.
As Endless Summer Quarterly wrote in their review, “there are great moments of depth, strokes of expression, and ageless vision that could only come from a ‘Jardine musical canvas.’ Although this collection isn’t purely autobiographical; it masterfully captures the transient lifestyle of his biological family as well as the musical consciousness of The Beach Boys.”
Now, just in time for Al Jardine’s 80th birthday, his debut solo album, A Postcard from California is available once again for all to enjoy. For more info on the album, please visit http:// www.aljardine.com
The Biker, The Blues and Gettin’ Down Out Of Town
Now really how many times have you been driving along and you look into a graveyard and see what’s on the left side of this paragraph? It’s enough to make a person take a second look and wonder if those mushrooms are coming back around. Ok so here I was in early October last year it’s late in the afternoon in a place named Edinboro Pennsylvania. I was scooting along route 6N going east and as I approached this downhill slope there it was this apparition or whatever it was just standing there in a graveyard. A man should not drink regional ale at a college bar named Fat Willie’s and head east. But I was more than a little curious and so I slowed down as I approached a four corners intersection coming up turned left and made a U-turn. Back up the hill and now the graveyard was on my right. Hmm no apparition. That was odd but ok maybe it was a quick camera shoot because after all it was the second week of October. Yes that must have been what it was so I remember turning around which isn’t that easy when you are running fourteen over tubes with a forty degree rake on the neck on a one thousand plus pound Harley-Davidson. But I digress. So here I was heading east again looking for an exit that was, now get this, as told to me at Fat Willie’s, just passed the graveyard, passed the empty corn field on the right and then hang a right onto the dirt road. Well as you might guess at eighty miles per hour I flew right by the turn and then down a really big hill that ended up at a crossroads. But I was in luck because as I sat at the light there on the left hand side up the road just a bit was a log cabin bar. Cool looking place, plenty of parking named Creekside and they were open. That’s my favorite part - they were open. Found a solid piece of ground by the front door for my kickstand, set her down and went inside. It was even cooler inside as just about everything had been built in regional Pennsylvania wood and flagstone. I went to the can and left some of the last place’s beer behind and came out and ordered a PA favorite named Yuengling Beer which is actually quite good from the pretty bar maid on duty. The place was nice but boring so I did my usual pick me up routine and made my way to the jukebox and choose a Halloween favorite with some spice to it, Monster Mash. I heard a couple of groans and then some laughter so the choice wasn’t too bad. After all the graveyard experience had set the tone for the day and it really is a cool seasonal song. Written by Bobby “Boris” Pickett and released in 1962 on the Garpax Record label. Now what’s really cool is that by night Pickett performed with a band named the Cordials and one night he just uttered some Boris Karloff kind of sentences and the audience went nuts. Soon he was writing “Monster

Mash” and people loved it. Gary Paxton of Garpax Records decided to include on a Halloween compilation and the rest as they say is history. Now getting back to Creekside Bobby’s song had played and I still had four songs to go. So it was a nice afternoon and I chose Albert Collins and his “Cold Cuts” blues number with its killer bass intro. Then the horns come in with Albert’s unique rocking blues style. Foot tapping get down way cool music. The place began to get into the groove, someone even bought me a beer. We have lift off Houston! I had went back to the bar and grabbed my glass of suds and returned to the box where I just had this big time craving to punch up Lonnie Mack’s famous “Oreo Cookies Blues” and then you should have heard the conversation and seen the smiles. We be rolling now Jack. Back to the bar and I found another beer sitting there. A man could really get to liking this place but it was time to make tracks. I settled up and headed for the door. October weather in Northwestern Pennsylvania can turn quickly but not today. Perfect riding weather with the leaves on the trees slowing falling to the ground in various hues of reds, oranges, and yellows. A good day to be out and about. Oil tank was full, my gear was anchored well and so off I went headed for a small town named Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania. From Creekside you just head south on 19 and take the cutoff route 1019 and you are now in sleepy community of many bars and a grocery store. But Cambridge Springs was not where I wanted to end up. Nope, I was making tracks for a place I had been before, Sprague’s Brewery, Bar, and Kitchen. A couple named Woody and Minnie used to farm this land but farming isn’t always the best form of income. Then one day they wondered if they could grow hops and brew their own beer and soon they were out of the farming business and smack dab right in the center of attraction in a village known as Venango. The farmhouse became a one family overnight spot which visiting bands began to rent and when bands were not renting it newlyweds were taking advantage of this cool location. The silo became a huge neon outlined beer stein that could be seen for miles, especially at night. The barn became a combination brewery downstairs and a restaurant and night spot featuring live music. People would drive for up to fifty miles, some from even further like Pittsburgh and Cleveland. The attraction? The coolness of not going broke farming and figuring out a way to make use of the land and

have fun doing what you like to do. However, on this day I wasn’t there yet and would not make it. I got side tracked by a damsel looking as hot as her bike who was all smiles sitting on her dresser outside a place named The Villa. What’s more there were other motorcycles close by and a neon sign that read “Rockin Roadhouse Rockers Blues”. Now that had my attention. So I parked the shovel, smiled nicely at the young lass and went inside. Once inside I saw a sign that read “Halloween Party October 29th”. Cool, the place must be the place in Cambridge Springs. Friendly gal behind the bar, busy, but friendly. She brought a menu with her and a coaster, smiled, and before she could say anything I said I would like a local beer. She asked me to define local since they are such a small community and said something out of Pittsburgh maybe. She recommended a New York beer named Genesee. I said I would try one then she asked pilsner or cream ale? So like the smart ass I am I said both. I tasted both and whatever was in this cream ale it tasted smooth and a bit creamy. The pilsner was stout but not overwhelming in bitters. It was about five in the afternoon and the place wasn’t packed but it wasn’t full either. When the gal came back by I asked her if they sold cigars and she said no. So I was out of luck on that count but just the same the place was cool, a bit old town, little community cool. The music was hot, laying down Johnny Winter and Eric Clapton performing “Sweet Sixteen”. Look out now that is slow blues at its best and the place got quite real quick. That was cool too. These crazy cats and cool mamas knew real blues when they heard it and appreciated it you could tell instantly. The good looking gal outside on the dresser came in and walked back behind the bar. She spoke to the other gal there and then began to wash glasses and put them into the rack. The music stayed on Johnny and Friends - this time it was Johnny Winter and Billy Gibbons performing “Where Can You Be”. Definitely a small town local pub with a good following. Pretty cool to be somewhere where the biggest argument was over which local high school football could be drafted over another.
