A LOOK INTO THE POINT’S PAST By Katie McFadden
Historians, Brian Merlis and Lee A. Rosenzweig, are getting back to the Point. They’ve just published a book that reflects on the history of Breezy Point, Rockaway Point and Roxbury, through a series of old rare photos. Most residents living today aren’t old enough to remember tent cities, the construction of the Marine Parkway bridge or the original ferry to the peninsula, but Merlis and Rosenzweig’s new book, Rockaway Point, Breezy Point and Roxbury Communities gives a glimpse into that forgotten past of the beginnings of Breezy Point, Rockaway Point and Roxbury, and other trips down memory lane in the more recent history of the area. The 120-page hardcover book features more than 200 old photos, from the early 1900s to the 1970s, with captions that tell a bit about the history of this unique part of New York. “The book isn’t a historical text. Rather, it includes an introduction by local writer and historian, Mary Elizabeth Smith, a preface about the book by myself and Lee, and a series of photos are identified by the year and location and whatever else should be known by the reader,” co-author Brian Merlis said. He added that there will be some things that the authors didn’t know. “People who read this will notice things that we didn’t, like their relatives, ancestors or friends in the photos. We hope this brings back a lot of memories for people,” Merlis continued. Merlis said that the process for this book began when he and Rosenzweig started collecting photos of the area about 10 years ago and they started to put the book together about a year ago. Merlis, a longtime historian, said he was surprised about some
of his findings about the area along the way. “It was interesting to come across photos of ships that ran aground, like the Princess Anne, which some parts of it were left on the beach for like 20 years; the construction of the jetty at the point and how people sometimes get stranded there when the high tide comes in; and the Atlantic Improvement Company high rise apartments that were built and the skeleton buildings were later exploded with dynamite. We tried to make the book as interesting as we could and make it a beautiful, presentable book for the residents who may want a copy,” Merlis said. Merlis and Rosenzweig have worked together on several other historical photographic books in the past, many showcasing various Brooklyn neighborhoods, but they wanted to get a glimpse into the past of a unique area across Jamaica Bay. According to Merlis, focusing on the Point was co-author, Rosenzweig’s idea. “Lee has a lot of friends that live there and he was raised spending a lot of time in that area,” Merlis said. “We’ve done so many books on Brooklyn neighborhoods, but he said ‘let’s do something in Breezy.’ I said ‘why Breezy?’ He said it’s a really interesting place and we have some good pictures like ships that ran aground there, the volunteer fire departments and old Mardi Gras celebrations, and people should see them. So we decided to do it. This is our first book focusing on a section of Queens. We figured it was a good place to start because there’s such a tightknit community over there with a lot of pride for their hometown, so we figured we wouldn’t have a problem selling books, but we mostly did this out of a love for history.” The authors have put a few
copies up for sale on eBay, but won’t be focusing too much on online sales, but rather word of mouth, so that residents can take advantage of the limited copies. Only a thousand were printed. Locals will have a chance to pick up a copy at a book signing event this weekend. The Breezy Point Historical Society is hosting authors,

Past And Future Views The murder rate was quadrupling but we were allowed – sometimes ordered – to take the subway in the bad old days if we were past the age of ten. Oh, those parents. But I guess it was relative. Why worry about your kids meeting a homicidal psychopath or some street toughs when you’re thinking about nuclear war? Those were the days when your kids were in school practicing putting their heads under the desk to prepare for nuclear war because, you know, that was going to keep them safe.
We weren’t really sure what they were, but “fallout shelters” or at least the signs for such things were everywhere. You’d see the yellow and black signs on random apartment buildings or on some door to a windowless basement. Quick choice: die in a nuclear blast or get stuck in some room with strangers for weeks. Before you decide – ask yourself: Did these rooms have toilets? I don’t think so. Yeah, what a choice. Radiation or hard time in a fallout shelter. Food and water, saltines and spam. And
worst of all, other people. Fallout shelters and the threat of nuclear war fell out of vogue because people got to watch real war on their televisions each night as images from Vietnam were broadcast. What crazy, scary times. Kids get trophies and medals for nothing these days. If they actually had “participation” awards in the old days they’d be legit. You participated and survived the sixties and seventies? That deserves a trophy. But you know, we — us friggin’ humans — always look back with half full glasses. We call the bad old days the good old days. That’s how screwed up we are. But I guess we also call them the good old days because what’s really scary is the future. I want driverless cars. I think it’s absolutely insane that people who are 1) easily distracted, 2) sleepy, 3) generally uncoordinated, 4) dumb, and 5) all of the above can drive a four-thousand pound machine at high speed in the opposite direction of other high speed machines driven by All of The Above — separated just
Page 5 by a painted yellow line. Insane. But now somebody says terrorists might program driverless cars so they become crowd-killing weapons. Great. I want a robot house cleaner like the one on The Jetsons. But now I hear robots will be nothing more than wolves in robot clothing. Someone created a robot that would ask permission to get into a college dorm. When approached by the robot, most students said no. Then they gave the robots a box of cookies and dressed it in fun stickers from a local candy store. The robot got easy access. And then someone said, what if the robot had a bomb inside the cookie box? Man, oh, man. And the latest thing from the near future? A memory prosthesis. You can’t remember where you put your keys and this brain implant will help. Sounds good until you realize you’ll also remember all the bad stuff about people you love. I don’t want to scare you about the future. I’m just slipping into my winter mood a little early this year. Getting ready for three months in a fallout shelter.

Positive Updates at November CB Meeting
There was a packed house at the Knights of Columbus on Tuesday, November 13 for the monthly Community Board 14 meeting, as attendees heard items from a jam-packed agenda of mostly good news. Newly re-elected City Councilman Eric Ulrich thanked attendees for voting, no matter who their vote was for, and brought with him some surprising news. “I want to thank everyone who voted. Whether you voted for me or not, this community put big numbers on the board and I’m honored and humbled. My door is open to every person in this community. We are here to serve everyone,� he said. Along with making the point of serving everyone, Ulrich brought up another politician who didn’t fare so well with Rockaway vot-
ers—Mayor Bill de Blasio. Ulrich announced that he will be working closer with the mayor to meet the needs of the community. Along with this came the announcement that the mayor will be coming to Rockaway to hear residents’ needs. “I congratulated de Blasio, and this might come as a surprise, but the mayor asked what I wanted and how he could help, and I said, I think it’s time you come to Rockaway to hear from my constituents about their issues,� Ulrich said. According to Ulrich, the mayor agreed and will be coming to Rockaway for a town hall on December 5. The mayor’s office said they could not confirm that at this time, but Ulrich said the time and place would be announced sometime next week. In the first presentation, representatives from St. John’s Episcopal Hospital came to
speak about all the positive changes taking place at Rockaway’s only hospital. CEO Gerard Walsh spoke about how $10.1 million in funding is being used to upgrade and expand the hospital’s emergency department and renovate the Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) building, plus another $6 million that is being used to upgrade the hospital’s telephone and computer systems. “Those projects, worth over $16 million, are funded and taking place as we speak. Phase 1 of this project should be done by January or February,� Walsh said. He also spoke of a partnership with Ross University, which will be giving the hospital $10 million over the next nine years, part of which will go toward continuing construction on a building on Beach 19th Street. St. John’s has also expanded by opening
three primary clinics on Beach 129th, Beach 20th and the Five Towns, and two more are in the works for the new Beach 105th medical center and a clinic on Beach 34th Street. The hospital will also be renovating its lobby and starting a 340B Pharmacy Program, where patients can get medications at a discounted rate, right in the hospital. “The last two years have been very rewarding. We’re not just renovating, but we’re also bringing new policies, procedures and attitudes with us to improve the overall experience at St. John’s,� Walsh said. Other hospital staffers went into more detail about specific changes. The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) spoke about its Take Care Rockaway project. Continued from Page 6 for the peninsula, so the RWA is working on programming to address and discuss mental health issues. They are partnering with the Far Rockaway Arverne Nonprofit Coalition to develop initiatives, create a resource guide and create events to bring awareness to mental health and reduce the stigma behind it. One such event is being held Friday, November 17 at the RISE Center. It will focus on the importance of peer mentors. In May, they will be hosting a walk to raise awareness. Later in the spring or early summer, they’ll be holding a wellness symposium. There was a quick presentation from the Land Use Committee that ended in a unanimous vote to move along the process of reopening the Harbor Light restaurant. An attorney, an architect and the owner, Sean Heeran, were on hand to talk about slight changes that needed to be made to the
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2017 design of the restaurant, since it couldn’t be rebuilt in the exact same way as it was originally. They needed approval from the community before moving forward with the buildings department. Not surprisingly, every board member in attendance voted to support it. As for when the restaurant will reopen? “As soon as possible,” Heeran said. Finally, the Parks and Public Safety Committee gave some updates on capital projects and other items. They discussed a pilot program by the Rockaway Business Alliance that will bring informational beacons to 100 areas between Riis Park and Beach 43rd Street. This technology is made possible by an SBA grant. The beacons will be placed up high in public areas, like near the beach, and private areas, like near businesses, and they will provide information about the area. There was also an update on capital projects that are being funded by additional FEMA money leftover from

the boardwalk, plus another $60 million in funds. Thirteen projects have been approved by FEMA, including work on the Beach 94th Performance Space, Beach 101-102 Playground, a Beach 90th Street adventure course, a new dog park, upgrades to Bayswater Park, the Beach 77th to 81st multipurpose field, the Beach 93rd Street labyrinth, the Beach 88th Street Park, Rockaway Community Park, supplemental features for Shore Front Parkway, like benches and lighting, the Edgemere Raise Shoreline Drainage project, Thursby Basin Park, and a new Parks operational headquarters. The update also included some expected design, construction and completion dates for some projects that are already underway. The meeting also included a public speaking portion. Among some of the highlights was a woman who brought awareness about the great children’s programming available at the Bethel Mission Loving Daycare

Accident-Prone Dear Editor: (In response to Dylan Watton’s 11/09 letter about park-
ing issues) Hi Dylan, I read your letter sent into The Rockaway Times last week titled "Parking Inequality," in which the sentence that got me was "to prevent non-existent accidents." Where you were referring to is known as a high crash location: Beach 108th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. In early 2014 and again in 2016, Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office did an exhausting and fantastic job in going through hundreds of accident reports, three to five year's worth, and did an analysis of all of the accidents reported at this intersection, noting how many involved turns and how many were serious, which required an ambulance and/or a tow truck to respond. As one of Councilman Eric Ulrich's representatives said, it is the most accident-prone location in the 100th Precinct, and I fully agree with that statement. I'm sure, Dylan, if you ask the Councilman's office, they would have no problem in showing you all the work that went into their accident analysis report.

Queens Rail Idea Dear Editor: Councilman Ulrich is rightly cautious about restoring the Rockaway Beach Line (RBL),
seeking to connect it into the LIRR Atlantic Branch instead. I had lived in Richmond Hill and am all too aware of the strong opposition to having trains near homes, schools, and businesses. But there is a solution, one that is part of the fabric of New York, and used when elevated and surface routes are not or no longer practical, and that is to put the RBL underground from Atlantic or Jamaica Avenues to the LIRR at Rego Park, or to the Queens Blvd subway, where there is a bell mouth. That approach would allow for the linear neighborhood park known as Queensway to be built on top. Existing ballfields and parking would be retained. Intermediate stations can be built like at Metropolitan and Jamaica avenues or phased in as needed by the local communities. The Woodhaven Jct. station can be reopened for transfers with LIRR trains. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2017 Fine Forgiveness Dear Editor: (In response to Danny Ruscilloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inquiry to the Department of Transportation) This is a follow-up to your Nov. 3 correspondence regarding recent changes to parking regulations on Beach 108th Street between Rockaway Freeway and Rockaway Beach Blvd. as well as Beach 108th between Rockaway Beach Blvd. and Rockaway Beach Dr. Based on our discussion, some motorists may have received parking summonses while the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) was implementing a left-turn lane treatment to enhance the safety and operation of this intersection. NYC DOT removed some parking on both the north and south medians by installing new No Standing Anytime signage. This work was completed on Oct. 24, 2017. The agency also installed markings to create two new left-turn bays on Beach 108th Street. The markings were completed on
Nov. 3, 2017. These changes, which were implemented using DOT in-house resources, are based on requests from the Community Board and other stakeholders, including the local precinct. We look forward to working with you on the future capital project at this site. As you know, NYC DOT does not issue parking summonses, nor does it adjudicate them. Those roles are handled by the New York City Police Department and the New York City Department of Finance, respectively. NYC DOT is, however, required to post notice in the affected areas of the new parking regulations, which we did here by affixing a sticker to the signs to provide notification of the effective date of the new regulations. If an owner of a motor vehicle receives a violation within five days of a sign change, that person has an affirmative defense so long as they parked in compliance with the previous parking regulation.

SBS Makes Its Confusing Debut

Whether you take the bus or drive, you probably noticed the new bus lanes, different traf-
fic patterns, and general confusion from Woodhaven to Cross Bay Boulevard, all the way into Rockaway. Starting this week the MTA
launched their newest Select Bus Service (SBS) for the Q52/Q53 lines. During any major changes to your morning and evening commute, there is usually lots of confusion and frustration, but hopefully SBS will be a quicker and eventually a smoother ride for all. These changes are a part of the MTA’s expansion of their SBS system that integrates Mayor Bill de Blasio's Vision Zero safety program into what the MTA hopes to increase reliability, reduce travel times, and create safer streets. The new SBS route covers 14.7 miles, the longest ever for the service, and the corridor serves over 30,000 daily bus riders. Among some of the changes Q52/Q53 bus
riders may notice are “off board fare collections” or ticket vending machines located by the bus shelters. This means no more swiping your MetroCard on the bus itself, but at a curbside vending machine. These machines are similar to the MTA vending machines seen in every Subway station, and provide a “ticket” that allows you to use any door on the bus without showing your ticket to the driver. NYC Transit Fare inspectors randomly inspect tickets to cut down on fare evasion, and can hand out a summons up to $100. This system according to the MTA, will allow for a quicker boarding, and shortened stop times. Another change is that your usual bus stop
may no longer be there. As part of the new system, several stops were consolidated, so people may need to walk further to get to their nearest bus stop. The Q52/ Q53 lines no longer stop at Atlantic Avenue, 5th Road in Broad Channel, Beach 86th Street, Beach 69th Street, Beach 98th Street, Beach 101st Street or Beach 105th Street. Local buses still make these stops. Some new stops were added on the mainland of Queens, including 91st Avenue and 101st Avenue on Woodhaven Boulevard and Pitkin Avenue on Cross Bay Boulevard. Continued from Page 16 time, Rockaway has accordion-style buses, or “articulated buses” as part of the new SBS system. They are 60-feet long as opposed to the older 40-foot long buses. The longer buses accommodate more passengers. Reducing traffic lanes for both commercial and private vehicles, in order to free up bus lanes, seems to be a recipe to increase traffic for private vehicles, in an already congested thoroughfare. Generally any push towards increased mass transit improvements, is done with the hope of increasing ridership, thereby reducing single use private vehicles travel, and reducing overall traffic volume. Decreased ability for
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2017 speeding vehicles during peak traffic, i.e. rush hour, should decrease traffic injuries and fatalities. The NYC DOT and Vision Zero Priority intersections are designed to increase pedestrian safety to reduce pedestrian crossings accidents. The rollout of the system comes after roughly 20 community meetings that were held to garner feedback for the project. Many opposed the idea in general, but the City went full-steam ahead with implementing the new system. The newly established red Bus Lanes provide a traffic free access lane for MTA Buses that are meant to increase quicker commute time for bus ridership, and allowing for a more efficient ride. Bus lanes will be in effect curbside in residential areas from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, and curbside along Cross
Bay Boulevard from 7-10 a.m. and 4-7 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Bus lanes offset from parking lanes or in the main road will be in effect 24 hours, seven days a week, and curbside parking will be preserved. Those clear traffic lanes can be extremely enticing to any frustrated driver stuck in traffic to jump into that free lane and zoom home. Unfortunately, if you do, be aware that there are Bus Lane automated cameras that will catch you. Starting November 19, there will be a grace period of 60 days, in which you will receive by mail, a warning. Once it is in full effect, sometime in January 2018, you will be fined between $115-
$150 for violations issued against your vehicle, but not the driver, as points will not be deducted from your license. The MTA SBS Woodhaven/Cross Bay lines will be using Transit Signal Priority (TSP) to better coordinate bus arrival times with the current flow of traffic lights and reduce wait times at red lights. According to NYC DOT, this will reduce bus travel times by approximately 18 percent, though certain locations may vary. Basically the individual bus GPS tracking devices, will electronically coordinate with the Traffic Management Center, relayed through the MTA’s Bus Command Center, to adjust traffic lights in order to ease the delay at traffic lights. The signal can then either extend the green light to allow the bus time to pass through the intersection,
Page 17 or shorten the red light to clear the intersection before the bus has to stop for a red light. Pedestrian crossings, traffic volume, street width, and walk signal timing has been factored into the timing and safety of the light change. With all these changes, both major and minor, there will be confusion, frustration, and a couple of valid excuses for being late to work. The changes seem to be geared toward mass transit riders. In theory, increased use of mass transit systems would decrease single occupant vehicle usage, thereby reducing the numbers of passenger cars on the road, creating less traffic. Time will tell if it works out in practice. In the meantime, breathe deep, try to relax, and give yourself a little extra time to get used to the changes.

Little North Pole Gets TV Treatment Story and Photos by Katie McFadden
Lights, camera, action! This year’s lighting of Joe Mure’s Little North Pole was a bit different. The recording for a TV show caused the local holiday tradition to switch gears, but the many residents that came out for the early start-date, Sunday, November 12, were still entertained with special performances, food, the impressive lights of the Neponsit home, and a visit from Santa. With ABC’s The Great Christmas Light Fight on scene, the Little North Pole lighting featured delays between performances for quiet moments for filming, cameras, and about half-a-dozen takes for the lighting of Joe Mure’s home this year.
Mure announced that he was adamant about the show, which features fantastically decorated holiday homes across the country for a chance to win $50,000, not coming to the Little North Pole. He said that he told producers no, three times, but they were persistent. Mure finally agreed to the taping if the producers would allow him to speak about the main cause behind the Rockaway tradition— to raise money and awareness for those dealing with juvenile diabetes, and if they were to win the prize money, it would go directly toward the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The producers agreed to his terms and the show went on. Despite the TV show taking over the night, Mure still achieved his second goal for holding the annual tradition— “to put a smile on every kids’ face and give them a memory of Christmas that will last the rest of their lives.” Guests were treated to food from various vendors, including Whit’s End and there was a full lineup of entertainment from local school performances to USO girls, Alive

Have you ever wondered what people do all day at their jobs? I have, and that’s the basis for this column, Rockaway at Work. I wanted to find out what Sam, the manager of Belle Harbor Foods, does at his job. When I arrived, Sam was up in his office, in the loft in the back room, which is only accessible by ladder. No, I did not have to climb the ladder; he came down to see me. Sam, along with his family, Joy, Linda, Peter, Julia and Michael, has owned Belle Harbor Foods on Beach 129th Street for 14 years. Sam, a former Brooklynite, was living in Florida and owned a bakery, when he got the call to come to Rockaway. By the time Sam arrives at work every morning, he has already picked up fresh bread and bagels for the day. He sets up that display, and then takes care of one of his most important responsibilities. He checks every freezer and every refrigerator to make sure they are working, and at the proper temperature. He knows the freshness and safety of the food depends on him doing that job properly.
checking in a beer delivery, taking phone orders from customers, unpacking boxes, packing out merchandise, talking to employees, and helping customers find merchandise. I watched as he took orders over the phone from customers for home delivery, which Belle Harbor Foods is well known for. Call in an order, and it’s on your kitchen table in a few hours for only a $2 fee. He deals with 20 orders a day, Monday through Thursday, and on Friday, they deliver about 30 orders. When the New York City Health Inspector arrived the day before I was there, it was Sam’s job to show her around, taking her to every part of the store, including the food processing area, the walk-in refrigerator and walk-in freezer. Of course, they passed, not only because the store is kept spotless, but most of all, because Sam knows the rules and makes sure the store adheres to them. Sam does not use a computerized ordering system. He walks up and down the aisles every day checking for low stock. He calls in all his orders because he wants that person-to-person connection Continued on page 21

Continued from Page 20 with the companies he deals with. Produce orders arrive from the Hunters Point Market five days a week—Monday through Friday. Sam inspects the fruit and vegetables as they arrive, and sends them back if they are not up to the quality his customers are used to. The hardest part of Sam’s job is Monday, when the delivery truck arrives with 400-500 cases of merchandise. Sam, the other owners, and all the full-time workers including Luis, Lorenza, Nicholas and Mauricio, and the part-time worker, David, pitch in. It takes an hour and a half just to unload the truck. Sam is the one with the responsibility of checking in the boxes; making sure the delivery contains the correct number of boxes, and that they are correctly labeled. It takes a half hour
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2017 for everyone to carry the boxes into the store, and an additional four to five hours to open all the boxes and get the merchandise on the shelves. Sam is very personable and pleasant to talk to. I watched as he greeted the customers warmly, knowing many of their names. I saw him step in to help behind the register, packing the groceries, to help speed up the process. When they are busy, they open a second register. “We try to work quickly, to get the customers out fast. We really appreciate our customers,” says Sam. Belle Harbor Foods is open seven days a week, 365 days a year, including New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Sam works six days a week from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., 10 hours a day. Two mornings a week he arrives at 5:30 a.m., even though the store does not open until 7. It takes long hours and hard work to run a busy store. Rockaway works hard.

At the beginning of this year, The Rockaway Business Alliance (formerly the B116th Street Partnership) expanded to include businesses from Riis Park all the way to Edgemere Farm. Businesses across the Rockaway peninsula face similar challenges, and our goal in expanding our district is to provide a community support
network for all of them. In response to the recent Hurricane Sandy Year Five Year Anniversary, two of our newest members, on opposite sides of the peninsula, told us about how they were affected by the storm. Here is Aiysha Jaggassar from Bethel Mission Loving Day Care Center in Edgemere:
“Bethel Mission Loving Day Care Center (BMLDCC) was totally destroyed by the flood waters. Everything we had was destroyed, or had major water damage. It took about one month for business to be restored; renovations needed to be completed. We received FEMA assistance, but due to much-needed renovations, we are still working on the building. BMLDCC has to re-market/re-advertise our original school’s location, and we are still recruiting children. It’s a great school and we look forward to increasing our student population. We are located in a NYCHA building. As we speak, they are making many modifications such as putting a generator on top of the roof to prevent long power outages from future storms. Window shutters have been added to prevent water from entering the building and they are also building mini cement walls to stop the water from reaching the building.” Here is Anita Ruderman from Hot Yoga Rockaway Beach in Rockaway Park:

We were closed for a month (until electric was restored,) and happily re-opened Dec 1, 2012. My landlord was nice enough to forgive November’s rent and reduced the rent a bit in December. That really helped. Community Board Applications Now Open Want to get more involved in the community? Join Community Board 14. Queens Borough President Melinda Katz is currently accepting applications from qualified and community-minded individuals who would like to serve on one of the borough’s Community Boards, which play an important advisory role in considering land use and zoning matters. Community Boards also contribute to public dialogue by holding hearings and issuing recommendations about the city budget, municipal service delivery and many other matters that impact their communities. Each Board has a monthly meeting to discuss such matters, plus committee meetings. “Government works better when we have active and engaged members from whom to draw expansive knowledge and extensive life experiences,” Katz said. “Serving on a Community Board is a significant commitment, demanding in both time and energy. Civic-minded residents interested in playing a larger role in the governance of the city, helping to

ABUNDANCE “Abundance is not something we acquire, it is something we tune in to.” - Wayne Dyer Abundance is a state of being within. It is not defined by what we have but by who we are. My inner self is sometimes forgiving, sometimes accepting, most of the time loving, most of the time peaceful, half of the time non-judgmental, most of the time giving, most of the time patient, some of the time understanding. How do you feel your inner self? How do you get in tune to that place of who you are as a thinking,
feeling person? By taking the time to be aware and stop and sit with yourself, you can abound in the essence of you, your spirit. Your inner self. And find the way to fulfill the state of your abundance at this moment in time. I see abundance as the overflowing of all positive attributes. When a situation arises that would normally be combative, for example, it could be peaceful if the abundance lies in understanding and acceptance – understanding of who the person is who exhibits insecurity, righteousness to a

fault, jealousy, dislike, hoarding, judging, unfairness, selfish intention – and acceptance of the person. At the same time, showing by example that one can understand and accept. When I can tune in to this understanding and acceptance within myself, I feel full: abundant. “Acknowledging all the good that you already have in your life is the foundation of all abundance.” - Ekhart Tolle We can build on the good. Ask yourself, “what is good in my life right now?” and recognize it every day as a building block to all other positive good things. Good attracts good so like magnets we can abound in these energetic attractions. Only good rests here. Abundance leads to joy. Abundance of all positive attributes and all that is good leads to a joyful life. There is always suffering and sadness and pain – this is life – what we make prevalent in our thoughts and hearts will take hold and make a difference in how we feel.
This time of year is associated with abundance because of the full harvest moon, fall harvest, our Thanksgiving holiday. Originally, an abundance of the harvests. When you think about it, we have what we need. Imagine if we could be happy with just our basic needs met? Like food, clothing and shelter. Imagine the tribes who had traditions of all sorts and all they needed they arranged and generations went on and on and on. Simple pleasures. Abundance. Oh, but I really want that... whatever it is. What we need to fulfill ourselves and what we want are two different things. Wants do not lead to abundance in any inner form. Fulfilling our needs to a good outer life, taking care of our basic needs, and filling out our inner selves to be positive, to forgive, to accept, to love, to give, leads to a joyful existence. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Inflammation Inflammation is a wellknown cause of atherosclerosis or “hardening of the arteries” and heart disease. There are many causes of inflammation in humans including obesity, cigarette smoking, cancer, and diabetes. A few months ago, a very interesting study was published in The American Journal of Medicine. The authors looked at another potential source of inflammation, namely dental plaque and poor dental hygiene. Although the study was small, the authors di-
vided the volunteers into two groups. One group used a plaque-identifying toothpaste and the other group, a similar-looking placebo toothpaste. Over the course of the study they measured high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, or hs-CRP. Hs-CRP is a non-specific indicator of inflammation and can be elevated in many conditions including smoking, obesity, diabetes, autoimmune diseases like lupus and scleroderma, and cancer. Sure enough they found that those people with dental

plaque or poor oral hygiene had higher levels of hs-CRP. The authors concluded the article by suggesting that a larger study should be performed to assess whether poor dental hygiene was associated with heart disease. Not long ago, a similar study called the Justification for the Use of Statins in Primary Prevention: Intervention Trial Evaluating Rosuvastatin (JUPITER) was published. Recent evidence has been mounting that statins, in this case rosuvastatin or Crestor, are very helpful in preventing heart disease in those without it and preventing worsening disease in those with it. In JUPITER the authors measured hs-CRP levels in those given rosuvastatin against the control group that was given placebo. It turned out that the study was terminated early because the hs-CRP levels in the group given the statin dropped precipitously. The use of statins has been growing tremendous-
ly as almost everyone diagnosed with heart disease is placed on a statin and many doctors are giving statins to patients who have mild lipid elevations because of the statin’s protective effect in developing heart disease. It is becoming more apparent that inflammation in humans has many deleterious effects including heart disease and inflammation and is being linked to other diseases including autoimmune diseases and cancers. Reducing that inflammation, will help reduce the incidence of many diseases. It is possible that one day not too far off, a visit to the dentist will help prevent heart disease. In the interim it is important to see your dentist at least annually for a dental exam and cleaning as this promotes good oral hygiene and provides early detection of oral and mouth cancers. City Pays Up For Ticket Glitch
The City might be paying you, or rather, giving some money back. The Department of Finance is refunding or dismissing roughly $26 million worth of parking tickets due to an error on certain parking tickets. If you get a letter from the Department of Finance (DOF), saying that they owe you money, it isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a scam. The DOF found that some tickets didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t apply a change in city rules for failing to display a muni-meter receipt of having an expired muni-meter receipt. The meter parking ordinance was changed from 4-08h10 to 4-08h1. Tickets with the old number were given out between April and July,
after the new ordinance went into effect, so the tickets were technically invalid. Now the city is paying back hundreds of thousands of people their fines of either $35 of $65, depending on the location of the infraction. The city is refunding a total of $18 million to New Yorkers who have already paid roughly 400,000 tickets, while another 100,000 tickets worth $8 million are being dismissed. Former Rockaway Times reporter, Dan Guarino and current salesman Freddie Marino were among some of the local residents who recently got letters in the mail saying they would get a refund, followed by a check just a few days later.

Talking ‘Bout My Insulation By Adam Magniccari
Insulation is a part of your home that hopefully you will never see. If you know what kind of insulation is in your home, chances are you had to open a wall or ceiling to fix something. In older homes they used newspaper or nothing at all. In the 1960’s, insulation started to become a staple and fiberglass batts started to become the standard. Just because you never see it, doesn’t mean its not one of the most important parts of your home. It affects how you feel in your home every single day, yet almost all the time it is completely overlooked in a renovation or remodel. The truth is that out of everything you choose to go
into the building of your house, insulation is the single most important choice and should be at the top of the list of priorities. I was part of a new construction project that was on a brand new piece of waterfront land. I got the job through an engineer friend and when I asked him who was installing the heating system, he told me “No one.” I left it at that and got to work completing my part of the project. After the project was all done, he educated me about how such a build was possible. This house was one I’d never seen before. It was built specifically for energy efficiency. It was framed with walls three times the normal thickness to accommodate enough insula-

tion to keep every bit of heat in the house. How did the house get warm you might ask? From the oldest heating system in the universe- the sun. From this heat source alone it was able to be perfectly comfortable on even the coldest February days. This was the first time I’d ever seen such emphasis put on the details of the house that the owner would never see. The truth is that when most people do any renovation, they are willing to spend money only on the things they will see. I’ve seen countless renovations and I can tell you this is probably the biggest mistake you can make. Insulation is discounted more than any other building material mainly because to do it properly is an expensive process. Let me be the first to tell you, it’s worth every penny. You may think it’s a lot of money but its money that you will spend once. After that you can sit back and smile knowing that your boiler and air conditioning systems will come on half as much as before. So now that we’ve touched on the im-
portance of insulation, you’re probably wondering how to address these issues with the walls closed and the construction already done and here’s how. 1. Start with the outside of our home. Focus on spots around the windows and doors. Oftentimes cracked mortar or stucco can cause severe drafts that suck the heat right out of your home. Same goes for the inside of your house around the windows. 2. If your home is an older one and you’re willing to touch up some paint, there is a method of insulating in older construction called “Drill N Fill.” In this type of insulating 2” holes are drilled at the top of you walls. A liquid expanding foam is pumped in and then the hole’s replaced and painted. You don’t even notice that anything was done to your walls. This method is not inexpensive but well worth the cost. Flight 587 Tragedy Remembered 16 Years Later On Sunday, November 12, friends, families, local elected officials and residents remembered the victims who died 16 years ago in the crash of American Airlines Flight 587. Many, including Mayor Bill de Blasio, gathered at the memorial on Beach 116th Street for an annual remembrance ceremony. On November 12, 2001, Flight 587 had some issues right after taking off from JFK Airport. The plane crashed down in Belle Harbor, instantly killing the 260 people on board and five people on the ground, including Thomas and Helen Concannon, Kathy Lawler and her son, C h r i s t o p h e r, and Franco Pomponio. At the time, the proximity to the September 11th terrorist attacks stoked fears that the crash might have been deliberate, but an
FAA investigation demonstrated that the failure of Flight 587 was due to pilot error. A monument was erected on Beach 116th years later to memorialize the tragedy. “It’s important to mark such a human tragedy, and the service held on Beach 116th was beautiful,” Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, who attended the ceremony, said. “The monument itself is a fitting coda to such senseless loss. The inscription in English and Spanish: ‘Despues, No Quiero Mas Que Paz’ (‘Afterwards, I Want No More than Peace’) encapsulates our feelings, those of our residents and those of the Dominican communities impacted in New York City and the Dominican Republic. Rockaway's Reading: Doggone Good Reads By Martha Rossi
As I approached the tragic end of Marley and Me by John Grogan, I decided to go to another room so I could weep in private. After about 20 minutes, my husband stuck his head in and asked, “Is he dead yet?” I replied, near tears, “No, but he’s VERY SICK.” A good dog book can be as exciting as a game of fetch, as comforting as a belly rub, as much fun as a day at the dog park, or simply a lesson in unconditional love. You don’t have to be a dog lover to become engrossed in a good dog book, but it doesn’t hurt. Here are some exceptional books that I really enjoyed. Like Marley and Me, Merle’s Door, Lessons From A Freethinking Dog, is a memoir by nature writer, Ted Kerasote. It is a moving and funny nonfiction book about the author’s
remarkable relationship with a stray Labrador mix, whom he meets in the wild while on a kayaking trip. During their 13 years together, Merle gives the author a lesson or two in canine decision-making and independence. Kerasote’s ability to anthropomorphize Merle is what makes the book so endearing. Merle, given his own door, freely roams his hometown, and is even dubbed the “Mayor” by its inhabitants. The author includes scientific information about dog behavior that is enlightening. Merle is the author’s best friend and constant companion as they enjoy the sportsman paradise of rural Wyoming. The book is a heartwarming exploration of a special bond. Kerasote never owned Merle. Merle chose to be with him. Enzo, the narrator, of The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein is highly intelli-
gent, philosophical and funny. He also happens to be a yellow Lab mix. HEALTHY HOLIDAY EATING By Megan Casper
The holidays are a time to celebrate with friends and family and enjoy seasonal favorites. We want you to have your best holiday season yet with a handy checklist for a happy and healthy holiday. The average adult gains one pound during the holidays. While that may not seem like a lot, this weight tends to stay on. People who are already overweight usually gain about five lbs or more each holiday. The average weight gain for an adult per year is one to two pounds, so it’s safe to say that each holiday season contributes to the yearly creep up on the scale. When it comes to diet and exercise, we tend to go all or nothing. Just because you’re going to eat a bit more than usual on a holiday doesn’t mean you can’t make healthy choices throughout the rest of the day. This year, get ready to indulge and enjoy without having to loosen your belt buckle for the rest of the season. 1. Don’t skip breakfast : While saving space for the big dinner ahead may seem like a good idea, going into a meal starving will lead you to gobble down way more food than you need and can lead you to make some not as healthy choices. Look for options high in protein which can help cut cravings. 2. Get your workout in before you go: Before you head out, make sure you get in a workout. Not only will it negate a bit of the damage later, but it also reduces hunger hormone ghrelin, helping you choose proper portions and make better choices later. 3. Drink lots of water: Start your holiday off with a big ol’ glass of H20 when you wake up, and make sure to
throw back a glass or two before you start the big meal. Research has found that people who drink two glasses of water before a meal lose more weight and keep it off. This simple tip works in two ways - thirst can mask itself as hunger, causing you to eat more, and water makes you feel fuller, causing you to eat less during a meal. Water may even help bump up your metabolism - one study found that water increased metabolism by about 25 percent for an hour. 4. BYOV (Bring Your Own Vegetable): If the ‘healthy’ vegetables at your meal tend to be coated in cream and butter, offer to bring a dish. While some steamed green beans or a plate of crudités may not seem like a popular option, you never know - other guests may thank you. 5. Don’t deny yourself : Remember, being healthy doesn’t have to be all or nothing. If you deny yourself your holiday favorites, you’re much more likely to binge later and you’re missing out on something that brings you joy. While you should go forth and enjoy a dollop of mashed potatoes or some apple pie, remember to do so with a plan. Before you dive in, check out the whole spread and choose a few of your favorite dishes. Try to fill half of your plate with fruit or veggies. Not only are they lower in calories, but the fiber in produce helps keep you full and slows down sugar spikes (so you may not need that after dinner nap.) 6. Enjoy each bite: Try to eat mindfully. How many times have you jonesed for something, and then gobbled it down so quickly you barely tasted it? Instead of shoveling down a mountain of mashed potatoes, truly taste each bite. Think about

the textures and flavors. By slowly enjoying your food, you’re much more likely to eat less AND be more satisfied - without having to be rolled out of the room. Eating more slowly also allows your stomach time to catch up - it takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to realize and signal that it’s full. To slow down, cleanse your palate with a swish of water or put down your fork and chat with your neighbor between bites. 7. Get your friends and family moving: After the
meal, take a family walk, play a round of football, or cut down your own tree. Exercise helps speed up digestion and keeps your blood sugar in check, meaning you’ll feel a whole lot better than if you plop on the couch and hibernate. Have a happy, healthy holiday eating season! Dear Enchantress, Can we talk about rejection? I am always afraid of being rejected. From men, from my family, my friends, about love, money, not doing enough, doing too much. It's exhausting and I feel my heart racing from the moment I think about making a decision. I'm in my 40's so making a decision should be easy at this point. I get so wordy and I hate when other people can't make decisions. I even have a hard time deciding on where to eat, and I am always on the go with the flow, and I sense people get annoyed at me. I'm fine doing whatever they want. I think that makes me easy to be with, but then I'm slightly bitter and have resentment because I never feel like I get my way. ARGH! I don't even know what my way is. My biggest problem is my anxiety. Dear Reject, I love this inquiry. Thank you for your truth. I believe you speak for many. Rejection never feels good. And it's a part of life. Starting young at age two, when children are told "no," it's the reason for a tantrum. I bring this up because at two years old, it's "normal" to have a tantrum. As we are adults, "tantrums" look like overeating, over drinking, and most awful, letting in the rejection into our psyche that creates the belief that we are foundationally flawed, and all the other things you have said, not cool enough, not sexy enough, not thin enough, not beautiful enough, not sporty enough, etc. All of this negativity contributes to anxiety. Here is what I know. I felt the same years ago, and I've been able to sidestep all of it.
A simple way to get started is through mirror work. I know it as originated from Louise Hay, and from using mirror work myself. There are many ways to rewire the brain and the limiting beliefs. I share Hay’s work with an upcoming free confidence challenge using mirror work. Also for right now, begin to become aware of moments where you begin being hard on yourself. Notice who is around, the details of your environment. What triggers your anxiety? Journal about it, and begin to move from judging the feelings to witnessing them. For example, you might think, "oh, I notice when I am in a bar and it's midnight, I start to feel sad and anxious,” or "I notice every morning I wake up with dread." Once you have the awareness of these reoccurring times and places, you can sidestep it, by simply taking a breath, moving your body in some way or changing your environment. The truth is you are NOT flawed. You are living your life, and have more choices than you even know. Your affirmation: I love and accept myself exactly as I am right now. Gobble, Gobble! BC Turkey Trot is Tuesday
On Tuesday, November 21 the FDNY 5K Turkey Trot fun run will once again be taking place in Broad Channel. This is the longest running race event in the FDNY. All proceeds go to the New York Burn Center. Staging and sign up for the race will be at the Broad Channel Athletic Club field at the north end of town. Parking will be available.
Sign-up starts at 10 a.m. and the race goes off at 11:30 a.m. sharp. The race course runs north to the Addabbo Bridge and then back south to the field. It is a great fun day to come out and see your neighbors, and support a good cause and run off some calories before the big Thanksgiving day.

Blessed Trinity 4th Grade PS 114 Honors Veterans Boys End the Season
Last Saturday, the Blessed Trinity 4th grade boys soccer team won their second consecutive Pee Wee South division title by beating Saint Francis de Sales at Fort Tilden. The game was close throughout, but Blessed Trinity was able to break through and get the game-winning goal in the second half. Despite losing the next day in the Pee Wee championship game to Sacred Heart, the boys have a lot to be proud
of as they had their second consecutive undefeated regular season. All season long the boys worked hard and showed great sportsmanship. Special thanks to the coaches who did an excellent job all season. These gentlemen always display tremendous sportsmanship and instill proper CYO values throughout the year. Third graders at PS/MS 114 The Belle Harbor School created a collaborative project in honor of Veteran's Day. Each student from Mrs. Mac and Ms. Marecki's class, Mrs. Foley and Mr. Hickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s class, Mrs. E. Daly's class, and Mrs. Kowloski's class, traced their hands, cut them
out, and created this American Flag. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The kids were so excited to see all of their hands come together to make this. We wanted to do something where the students can work together and create something really special to show our appreciation for our Veterans,â&#x20AC;? said Mrs. Foley.

Snowflake League: Quarterfinals Week By The Commissioner’s Office
The quarterfinals of the Snowflake League finally took place as the cold weather is most definitely among us. These are best of three series, all in one night, so if the series goes three games, guys are in store for a chilly night at the sandlot. We weren't as lucky as we'd like to be because we had our first ever post-season rainout. That was unfortunate but the other three series were completed. We had two sweeps, one upset, and a partridge in a pear tree. The results follow. On Monday night, the Snowflake League had its 4 vs. 5 matchup. This was the (4) Sons of Pitches taking on (5) Rock Fam. While screenshotted text messages proved that the Sons of Pitches were
already daydreaming about their semi-final opponent, they still had to play the quarterfinals first. This did not go as planned for them as they wound up losing to Rock Fam in three games. Rock Fam took Game 1 by five. Should have been more but the Sons of Pitches put up a big rally in the final inning. Game 2 saw the bats go cold for Rock Fam and the Sons of Pitches capitalized. S.O.P. took Game 2 by a six spot. Temperatures got cold for Game 3 but the offense picked back up. Rock Fam jumped out to a 20-3 lead with the Sons of Pitches scoring some late inning runs while also completely changing their defensive alignment. Game ended with an 11 run cushion as Rock Fam advances and the Sons of Pitches were sent home until next
September. Tuesday night's action between the (2) Ruffle Bar and (7) Black Sox was rained out. Their make-up took place on Monday, November 13. Wednesday night had the (3) Cereal Killers sweeping the (7) Alchoballics. The first game wasn't close, so 'when it rains it POURS.' The game ended in 'Mercy fashion.' even though there is no mercy rule in the playoffs. In Game 2, the Cereal Killers used the strategic tactic of walking the bases loaded even with a big lead. It must have worked because the Alchoballics were held to only one run. Cereal Killers advance and the season is over for the Alchoballics. The sweeping scores were 22-2 and 13-1 in favor of the Cereal Killers. Thursday night saw the 1 vs 8 series
being much closer than expected. Both games were won by (1) Marine Park though. Sweep. First game by six, second game by one. Marine Park prevails and moves on while (8) Allstate heads home to the Wharf. Scores were 10-4 and 4-3 in favor of Marine Park. Great first week of playoffs. What a weekend of fun competitive action for the boys in the Diocesan playoffs. Saturday, November 11 at 9 a.m. was the South sectional semi final against Blessed Trinity (BT) at Fort Tilden. With the temperature below freezing, the St. Francis de Sales (SFDS) boys were bundled up, but on their game against their rivals from next door BT. Our energizer bunny whose battery never goes low, Richie Aiken scored two goals in the effort and was literally all over the field to blunt most of BT's advances. Our anchors on defense Peter McElhinney, Frank Flohr, Kieran Buonanno and Peter Murray were formidable all game long - as usual. Jackson Cintron was on his "A" game in goal with several big plays/ stops that were very important in the contest. Peter Mac and Nick Castro also added goals in the game to secure a 4-2

gate Matthew LaFroscia started the championship game with a goal to make the score 1-0 in our favor. Jackson Cintron again performed wonderfully in goal, not allowing Assisi to score in the first half despite some pressure they applied. To start the second half, Anthony Gennaro and Anthony Vento played a great midfield to frustrate the offense minded Assisi. Star forwards Richie Aiken and Nick Castro again kept putting shots on goal all second half, ultimately resulting in a Castro goal. Making it 2-0 SFDS late in the contest. Assisi managed to get a meaningless goal late to make it 2-1. Then the final whistle blew, and the SFDS 3rd Grade Boys celebrated a well-earned first Diocesan crown. More than anything, the boys demonstrated great teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership and respect for everyone - all 2017 season long. Congratulations, we are all proud of you!

Blessed Trinity Girls Win Championship
Last Sunday afternoon the Blessed Trinity 5th/6th grade girls soccer team won their third CYO championship with a 2-0 win over SFDS at Fort Tilden. The girls’ quest for a championship began with a dominant regular season that saw them finish in first place with an 8-1 record. In the championship game, the girls won behind goals from Eve Farrell and Layla Duggan. This victory was truly a team effort as every single player contributed to the championship.
All season long the girls worked extremely hard in practice as they improved their skills while having fun. The hard work paid off as they made their fourth consecutive trip to the championship game. The team would like to extend congratulations to their friends and classmates from SFDS. This was the third time the two teams have met in the championship game. As always, both teams played extremely hard and showed great sportsmanship during and after the game.
