Local 2020 Election Results By Katie McFadden

The votes are in! Well, mostly. With absentee ballots still to be counted in New York, official results are still up in the air for local races, but several candidates have taken early leads and are projected to win their seats. Here are the local results as of Wednesday, November 4. In the race for Queens Borough President, with a large lead, current Councilman Do-

Donovan Richards is the projected winner for Queens Borough President.

novan Richards is the likely winner. The Associated Press and other media outlets have projected Richards as the winner. As we go to press, according to the New York City Board of Elections, with nearly 96% of scanners reported, Democrat Richards has 67.24% of the vote to Republican challenger Joann Ariola’s 30.59%. Richards has 380,449 votes and Ariola has 173,056. Dao Yin of the “Red Dragon” party has 11,696 and there are 565 write in candidates. On Election Night, Richards shared the news of his projected win from local news outlet, Spectrum News, saying “Yes we can.” He also shared the news about one special vote. Richards’ father, who recently became a U.S. Citizen, was able to vote for the first time this year. He proudly cast his ballot for his son. On the ballot for Congress in District 5, Congressman Gregory Meeks ran unopposed and write-in candidates were barely

a blip. With more than 97% of precincts reported, Meeks has 99.29% of the vote with 159,032 votes. Less than 1%, or 1,135 votes were for write-ins. Also running unopposed for State Senate in District 10, James Sanders Jr. earned 99.69% of the vote, or 76,302 votes, with only 241 write-in choices in his race. The State Senate race for District 15 offered more of a choice, but current Senator Joe Addabbo Jr. holds the lead over Republican challenger Tom Sullivan. As we go to press, Addabbo has 53.68% of the vote with 49,382 votes and Sullivan has 46.24% with 42,536 votes. On Wednesday morning, Addabbo took to social media to say, “Thank you. I want to thank my supporters for giving me the privilege and honor of serving all the residents throughout my district. My team and I look forward to working with you as we navigate through the COVID pandemic and address any

issue that confronts us. Thanks again.” In the race for Assembly in District 31, Khaleel Anderson’s win is clear. With 88.63% or 28,048 votes, Anderson takes the win over Republican chalContinued on page 6

The Rockaway Times

Make Do We weren’t poor, we were inventive. We’ve gone from make-do to just get another one. I was watching Intelligence on Netflix, a pretty good mob/government conspiracy series and there’s a cliffhanger at the end of Season 2. I do the quick search with the remote and I don’t see Season 3. I ask the friend who recommended it and he says, yeah, there’s no Season 3, that’s it. First, I’m annoyed. How can you recommend something that

just goes away, and isn’t resolved? And he shrugs, that’s the way life is, dude. Is it coming back? I ask. Doubt it, he says, they’re using flip phones. Oh... Well, proves I’m no Jessica Fletcher or even Barney Fife. I didn’t even notice. Jeez, flip phones. I do the Google and see the show was canceled in 2008. Only twelve years ago. Funny thing is, styles and haircuts haven’t changed much since then, but flip phones? Yeah, they’re

basically the Pinto of mobile devices. Not that they’re going to blow up but they’ve become pretty obsolete. But there are die-hards out there. And when I made a wisecrack to a guy using one, he said, he makes do with it. Makes do. That brought me back. We used to always make do. Now, we just get another one, no matter what it is. Phones, shoes, cars, whatever. Things don’t really wear out, we just get tired of them. I was thinking that about my TV. It’s fine and it’ll be fine until I want another for no reason. Not like the old days when you had to make do. You weren’t getting a new TV just because the antenna broke and the coat hanger you used for a replacement never quite got the reception right. In the old days, you

Page 5

had to get up to change the channel. Can you imagine? The effort, sheesh. And say you were watching Channel 11 and you wanted to change to Channel 2. You’d twist the dial as fast as you could, flying past the other channels. But those were the days when things did wear out. All that channel changing stripped the metal or plastic spindle that held the dial. Pretty soon you’d have a dial but it didn’t catch on the spindle threads and it’d be good for nothing. But you had to make do. You yanked off the dial and got a pliers to turn the spindle to get to your channel. Classy. There was a TV with no dial, a coat hanger in the antenna hole, and resting on top were the pliers. By the way, using pliers was no easy task. Grabbing the spindle with the pliers teeth

to turn the thing took some patience and skill. Half the time, you’d just say forget it, I’m watching Channel 9 or whatever. Now? It’s the end of the world if the batteries on the remote don’t work. Then again, it’s just as bad as having a worn out spindle. I don’t think I can change the channel without a remote. Do TVs let you do that anymore? I wouldn’t know how to make do. Back then, making do was what was done. You needed a ball to play stickball or asses up, you’d get the same hanger from the TV set and twist it so you could fish a ball out of a sewer or storm drain. With a little patience, you’d have yourself a smelly ball. Those were the days. Nobody said just get another.

LOCAL 2020 ELECTION RESULTS Continued from Page 3 lenger Joseph Cullina, who had 11.27% of the vote, or 3,567 votes. At 24 years old, Anderson will be the youngest currently serving New York State Assemblyman and the youngest African American to ever be elected to the position. Even Anderson was humbled by the news as reality set in on Wednesday. He took to social media saying, “I’m literally 24 years old and a state legislator‌Wow. The youngest Black person in New York state history!â€? On election night, Anderson said, “To the communities of Assembly District 31: I am HONORED to be your next Assemblymember! THANK YOU for your continued support of our New Fight Together. I am ready to bring my spirit of activism, advocacy, and leadership to Albany!â€? In the race for Assembly in District 23, with 99% of scanners reported, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato looks likely

Khaleel Anderson wins the Assembly District 31 race.

to keep her seat with 58.25% of the vote or 22,727 votes. Republican challenger Peter Hatzipetros took 41.65% of the vote or 16,251 votes. As we go to press, neither candidate has released a statement regarding the results. In the race for Justice of the Supreme Court 11th Judicial District, mostly Democrat judges swept the competition. With the option to select nine candidates for a seat, Tracy A. Catapano-Fox, who ran on the Democrat, Republican

The Rockaway Times

and Conservative tickets, took 12.20% of the vote with 443,405 votes. Evelyn L. Braun, also on all three tickets, won 11.33% of the vote or 411,786 votes. Kevin J. Kerrigan, also on all three tickets, won 10.95% of the vote or 397,915 votes. Leonard Livote, also on all three tickets, won 10.72% of the vote or 389,565 votes. Democrat Michelle A. Johnson won 8.71% of the vote or 316,647 votes. Democrat Karina Alomar won 7.86% of the vote or 285,633 votes. Democrat Mojgan Cohanim Lancman won with 7.62% of the vote, or 276,826 votes. Democrat Lance P. Evans won with 7.38% of the vote, or 268,270 votes. Republican Joseph Kasper, who had served as a District Leader for

Assembly District 31 in Rockaway, and Republican John C. Spataro, who resides in Broad Channel, were both knocked out of the race, trailing behind with 3.65% of the vote and 3.47% of the vote respectively. Note that these numbers will change, but the projected winners will likely remain the same. Across New York City, there are more than 1.1 million absentee ballots that are yet to be counted. As we go to press, the borough/ district breakdown of this number is unclear. These votes will not start to be counted until Monday, November 9, so official count results will have to wait. Congratulations to all candidates and all projected winners!

***** No rest for the weary. It’s Thursday, November 5. The mayoral election is now on the clock. Happy thought of the day: term limits. ***** The huge voter turnout really underscores the value of early voting and mail-in ballots. Not everyone can get to the polls on a Tuesday in November. If you voted by Absentee Ballot, you can check online to track its status: go to nycabsentee.com/ tracking/track-by-voter-info ***** Well, we’re not sure how today is but according to a recent survey, more than half of Americans believed November 3 would be the most stressful day of their lives. The same poll said 67% of respondents just want 2020 to end already. We’re wondering what those other 33% are

***** You’ve probably seen “Hotel Impossible” on the Travel Channel which is hosted by local Anthony Melchiorri. Although the show no longer airs, Melchiorri filmed a rave for The Rockaway Hotel. You can find it on his Facebook page. And while you’re at it, check out his podcast, No Vacancy Live. ***** Just a heads up, if you missed this: Under a new law, all car passengers in New York state must wear seat belts while riding in the back seat. Even adults. And even in Ubers. ***** The New York City Police Department appointed its first female Chief of Patrol Thursday, Juanita Holmes, last week. Holmes began her career in 1987 at the 101st Precinct and later worked in the 100th as well. Her sister, Janice Holmes, was the Commanding Officer at the 100th just a few years ago. ***** Nassau County hasn’t had any kind of worrisome Covid

The Rockaway Times Don’t have your dinner spoiled. According to District Attorney Melinda Katz, there has been an increase in jumpin vehicle thefts in Queens County. Cars left running or unattended are most at risk, especially during food pick-ups. ***** The Show Will Go On. We don’t know what kind of festivities there will be but we know The Little North Pole will brighten the neighborhood. Joe Mure and some very helpful elves will be hard at work putting up the amazing display this weekend. ***** Lew Simon and Jeanette Garramone are collecting Stop and Shop gift card donations to purchase hams and turkeys for seniors and the disabled this Thanksgiving. If you’d like to contribute, call 718-945-1216. ***** Our Instagram account is nearing 10,000 followers and we’re closing in on 20,000 Facebook likes. spike even though restaurants have been allowed 50 percent capacity for months. In New York City, where infection rates remain low, restaurants are still forced to abide by a 25 percent capacity. Cuomo indicated November 1 as a target date to increase capacity but that came and went. The small businesses need to plan and workers need work. ***** Former HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan is running for Mayor and got on an introductory zoom call last week with cross section of Rockaway folks. He’s a smart, engaging guy but he’s currently got thirteen other declared candidates (so far!) to contend with. ***** It’s a shame St. Camillus School and others closed pre-Covid because enrollment has shot up at many Catholic schools as parents frustrated with the way NYC is handling remote learning and other matters have looked to Catholic and private school as options. *****

Covid-19 Halloween Candy Chutes A Covid-19 Halloween made the holiday look a bit different this year. With coronavirus still a concern, some locals across Rockaway got a little creative with how they distributed candy this year. To keep a safe distance from trick-or-treaters, some homes and even the Belle Harbor Yacht Club created candy chutes, to send candy down to kiddos in costumes. Kudos on the creativity! Boyfriend Indicted for Alleged Murder of Local Woman By Katie McFadden

A local woman’s last moments may have been more tragic than originally thought. A local man, Shmuel Levine, has been indicted on murder charges for allegedly beating his girlfriend to death on Monday, October 26. Danielle Marrano of Rockaway Park was 37. According to DCPI, at around 2:40 p.m. on Monday, October 26, police from the 100th Precinct responded to a call at 117-12 Ocean Promenade, known as the Hampton House. Police encountered Marrano, who was laying on the pavement, unconscious and unresponsive. EMS transported Marrano to Jamaica Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Marrano, whose body was found below her 6th floor window, was originally thought to have jumped in a possible suicide attempt. However, a medical examiner determined that she had four fractures to

her skull, at least two of which were not consistent with injuries by a fall from an elevated height. The medical examiner determined that her death was a homicide. A further investigation revealed more details. According to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, inside Marrano’s apartment, police found hair that appeared to match Ms. Marrano’s and also observed a large dent in the wall. According to the charges, Marrano’s boyfriend, Shmuel Levine of Beach 135th Street, allegedly got into a verbal argument with her over cheating and was attempting to take her phone. The dispute escalated into a physical confrontation, with Levine allegedly putting Marrano in a chokehold. It is not immediately clear how Marrano wound up on the pavement below the apartment. Shmuel was initially arrested and charged with robbery and assault. However, on Monday, November 2, a Queens County

grand jury indicted Levine on charges of murder in the second degree. Levine is expected to be arraigned next week before Queens Supreme Court Justice Richard L. Buchter. “This woman’s last moments of life were brutal,” Katz said. “The defendant allegedly resorted to vicious, physical violence to resolve a quarrel. The defendant has been charged accordingly and is in custody.” If convicted, Levine faces up to 25 years-to-life in prison. Marrano is survived by her parents, Dominick Sr. and Karen Marrano, and her brother, Dominick. Marrano had worked as a dental hygienist at Advanced Gentle Dentistry of Park Slope. “My daughter was a beautiful bright shining star,”

Marrano’s mother, Karen Marrano, told the New York Daily News. “She loved her family and her friends and her brother very much. She loved to dance and travel.” A wake was held for Marrano on Sunday, November 1 at a funeral home in Brooklyn, followed by a funeral Mass on Monday, November 2 at Saints Simon & Jude Roman Catholic Church.

Now That’s a Hot Rod On Monday, November 2, a massive vehicle fire broke out near Beach 74th Street and Rockaway Beach Blvd. Three FDNY units responded after getting the call just after 8 a.m. on Monday. Just after 10 a.m., the situation was under control. No one was in the white Audi

SUV at the time and there were no injuries. It is suspected that fallen live wires caused the fire. Some residents in the surrounding area saw power outages and PSEGLI responded to the scene. Neighbor Tim Moriarty caught these incredible photos of the dramatic scene.

Running the Marathon for Rockaway By Katie McFadden

The New York City Marathon may have been canceled this year, but that couldn’t stop the running spirit in Brendan Lally. While he may have missed Manhattan, Staten Island and the Bronx, the Belle Harbor resident took to the local streets on what would have been marathon day, to clock in the 26.2 miles, while raising some money for local charities along the way. When Lally learned this year’s NYC Marathon had been canceled due to coronavirus concerns, disappointed was an understatement. After all, it would have been his fourth marathon and the 2020 race was set to be a milestone event in its 50th year. Not to mention, Lally had already spent a lot of time training. “The New York City marathon wasn’t canceled until other races around the world started being shut down. We were holding out hope and

eventually they shut it down. They had to. But I had stayed training all the way through, just for my sanity,” Lally said. He decided to keep running. When the marathon organizers announced that they would host a virtual marathon instead, Lally decided to give it a go. “It was something to focus on while everything else was going on,” he said. In the past,

Lally had raised money for Community Access in Manhattan, but having to stick to the local streets for this year’s run, he decided to run for some local causes in the neighborhood he’s lived in for just two years. “I inquired with my friend, Joe Courtney, if he knew any local charities that I could run for and he told me about the Graybeards and Rockaway WISH. So I contacted both and asked if they’d mind if I ran for them. They said that would be great,” Lally said. Lally soon started a GoFundMe campaign for his charitable run and between donations from suppliers for his fire alarm system company, IRL Systems, locals, and friends, Lally was able to raise $4,140. He plans to split the funds between the Graybeards and WISH equally, donating $2,070 to each local organization. All that was left to do was run. On Sunday, November 1, what would have been marathon

RUNNING THE MARATHON Continued from Page 22 Belt Parkway to finish the 16mile loop. While it was technically a solo marathon for Lally, he was never alone. With Sean Tubridy, Jonathan Waters, Patricia Boyd and Aiden Conlon all following on bikes, and his wife, Sinead and two kids, Claire and Finn, cheering him on from their car, Lally was in good company. And that company came in handy when like most cars, Lally hit a slowdown on the Belt. “Somewhere around mile 16 on the Belt, my legs started to spasm with cramps. I had never experienced anything like this. It was like aliens bursting out of my legs. My coach, Patty was with us and said we needed to get salt, but there was nowhere around to get it, Lally said. Calls started being made. Lally’s crew got in touch with friend, Mike Balfe, who made a quick trip to a Popeye’s on Flatbush Ave-

nue to grab some salt packets. Tubridy met Balfe and caught up with Lally to deliver the salt. “They poured four packets of salt into my mouth, which was horrible, but it worked like a miracle for the cramps. I was able to get running again and the cramps came on again, but I had three more packets of salt and kept going. We nursed it home around Flatbush and the Marine Parkway Bridge, Lally said. He gained some extra motivation as he passed the firehouse along Riis Park to cheers from New York City’s Bravest, and his wife began to blast the Rocky theme song as he made his way back toward home in the last mile. Despite the salty setback, Lally ended with a sweet finish. He completed the marathon in 3:18:31, a whole four minutes faster than his personal record. To make it even sweeter, he came home to a big celebration with friends. “Keith Sullivan had arranged for people to come over and it was an amazing finish to the

race. A few of the boys were there and Keith got two local singers to play and we had food for about two hours after the race. It was really an amazing day, Lally said. The party even included a cake, made by Helen Corr-Endall, a secretary at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy, who included every detail in the icing, down to the 2020 medal, which NYC Marathoners receive after completing the run.

Page 23 And while the icing medal didn’t last long, Lally will eventually receive the real deal for competing in the NYC Marathon’s virtual race. “I’m looking forward to that because it’s going to say 2020 on it, which I think is cool, Lally said. While running the marathon solo was a different experience, Lally says he was happy to have the local support throughout. “I had my own support team, which you wouldn’t have during the real marathon. You have to wait for each mile to see people out there supporting you. Here, I felt special, like I could put out my hand they were there to help me. That was amazing. I felt safe, he said. Lally says that local support has been felt since he moved to Rockaway. “We only moved to Rockaway two years ago and we were very apprehensive about moving from Bay Ridge after 22 years, but Rockaway has turned out to be an amazing place and we absolutely love it. We love the people and we love the area, he said. “I’m really blessed to be here.

New Paltz & Sleepy Hollow! By Lou Pastina

I figured a quick trip upstate before winter settles in and the third wave hits us was the cureall needed. So, the mermaid and I packed a few bags and hit the highway. She booked an Airbnb just outside of town. My kids have used Airbnb, but

I never did, preferring the safety of big hotel chains, but the mermaid picked the perfect location overlooking the Shawangunk ridge and the tower at Mohonk. The one room accommodation had an outdoor hot tub, and it stopped raining just enough for a dip in the soothing waters overlooking the valley

and ridge beyond. I ordered a hot tub in July of this year and am still waiting on delivery, so this was a nice reminder as to what I have in store for me once it’s delivered. My kids think I already have it set up and have just been delaying telling them about it. Would I do that? Never! New Paltz is a cute, hippie-themed college town. People wear masks there, and I was happy to see that. We ate at the brewery in town, and I have to say I have never been there, but I enjoyed it, even in a pandemic. We had dinner at a beautiful place called Garvan’s run by an Irishman from Donegal and the food and atmosphere was terrific. We once again toured Huguenot Street, with homes from the late 1600s from the escapees from religious persecution in Europe. The mermaid had a surprise for me on this trip. She booked a hike with llamas and alpacas. That’s right, llamas and alpacas! This farm in Hyde Park has about thirty of them and many more sheep. In fact, the llamas act as guardians for the sheep.

My llama’s name was Prince Caspian, and we got along very well. Apparently, the stories about them spitting are true, but only if they feel threatened. I made sure not to threaten the Prince! We hiked through the farmlands, and we learned the difference between the two animals: llamas are bigger, have bigger ears, although alpacas have fatter faces (don’t Continued on page 25

THE LAZER SPEAKS Continued from Page 24 say that to them, they are self-conscious); alpacas are bred for their fiber; while llamas are pack animals; but don’t be fooled, llamas are much more independent than alpacas. So, when Prince Caspian wanted to stop for a bite to eat, who was I to argue with the 400-pound Prince! All in all, it was a fun thing to do, even in the rain!! Our next stop was more to my liking: a cemetery! It being the week of Halloween, I thought it appropriate to stop at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. If you have never been, it’s literally right off the Thruway just before the Mario Cuomo Bridge (Tappan Zee for you old-timers!). We stayed overnight at the Tarrytown Estate which is an old mansion used as a conference center. Because it was pouring rain, we had the cemetery all to ourselves. We visited the Old Dutch Church and of course, Mr. Washington Irving him-

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2020 self. You’ll be happy to know that he is not alone there, as his family plot includes about thirty others in an enclosed portion of the cemetery. Many other famous people are interred there including Andrew Carnegie, Elizabeth Arden, a Rockefeller or two and many more. It is a spooky place that is filled with atmosphere, and the rain made it feel even spookier. When we got up for our return trip to Rockaway, we were greeted with snow! It was a stark reminder that summer is officially over, and it’s time to get out the winter coats. It was also a reminder that we have been living in a pandemic for about eight months now. New York has just recently put in restrictions coming back into the state if you travel. But you are ok if you stay in state. While traveling is generally discouraged by government officials, if you stay in state, you won’t have as many restrictions, and you can refresh your soul before the real cold comes!

CHARLIE BRADY 1948-2020 Charles Patrick Brady died on October 25, 2020 at the age of 72. He was a loving father and truly enjoyed being a father and encouraging the youth of Rockaway. He coached junior varsity baseball for Christ the King High School for close to twenty years, and was also known as the founding father of the original Rockaway Sharks Baseball traveling team. Charlie was also best known for coaching the Angels organized girls traveling AAU Basketball team. He was loved and respected by many and his memory will live on through the hearts of all that played for him. Charlie also served as a Union Delegate for Local Union 584 and was a Vice President. The funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis de Sales Church this Saturday, November 7, 2020 at 10 a.m.

Saving Grace No matter what happens, we must dissolve the uncivil division, unkindness and hatred and replace them with unity to agree to disagree, kindness and love. If not, life as we know it will not be good and happy. I know that is a huge statement, but I do think our way of life will change drastically. When once we could feel safe and sure, more and more that seems less of the case. We each have to ask ourselves, “is that what we want?” I observe that some people do

not stop and think of consequences before saying something or doing something detrimental. If we all just paused. . . We’re possibly on the brink of another lockdown, too. And we witness more and more impatience and lashing out. We feel compassion for those who have lost family members or friends, and for those who were hit with it, but, there is division there too about simple things like wearing a mask or not congregating. It is so uncertain,

no one sees what is going to happen, but pausing to think a minute about what to do for the short term could bring better long-term results. When someone’s loved one passes, or someone becomes ill, each of us, no matter what, feels it in the heart space for that person. That is our common ground. That is our humanity surfacing. That is our saving grace. If we can approach whatever happens in this light, we can agree to disagree and maybe somehow put aside the ugly feelings and reactions, and moderate to what could be good. We disagree on what is good. So, then we have to accept each point of view and look for ways to be on the same track for at least one thing. Then maybe another. Let’s try not to judge although it may be hard. And I, for one, struggle with this. But, unless we do not judge, we will never be able to agree to disagree and move forward. So, no matter what happens, let’s find the saving

The Rockaway Times grace in it, humanity: human nature of kindness and compassion. It will be a tough road ahead so let’s be kinder to each other. When we’re in the yoga room, we are all the same. That is our saving grace. It is a respite from the restlessness and feelings arising from uncertainty. It is a centering process, the practice of yoga. Perhaps you have that in a different place. So maybe start from there - start from that wholesome place where no one judges; there is no politics, there is no religion, there is nothing that is divisive, only cohesive and whole. A feeling based on humanity and a belief based on conscious thinking. Let’s calm down! Simply slowing down the breath, being conscious of it and repeating “I am peace, peace is in me” is a good start. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be compassionate. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Flu Shots Reminder I hope that the experts are correct about their predictions regarding this year’s flu season. I say this because these same experts’ predictions on COVID-19, especially early on in the disease process, turned out to be totally wrong. After reading in February or March that their predictions were that this virus would not be severe, I passed their predictions on to you, the readers of this column (recall that early on, even Dr. Fauci said that masks did not help). Unfortunately for a lot of people, those predictions were incorrect. They now predict that this year’s flu season will be both not as severe as a

usual flu season (normally, seasonal flu accounts for 34-61,000 deaths every year) and will have a later start, perhaps December or January. These predictions make sense as they are based on the fact that we are still staying home, social distancing, and wearing masks to protect us from COVID-19, thus protecting us from influenza as well. Be that as it may, it is still imperative that everyone gets a flu shot as well as a coronavirus vaccine, when it becomes available. There are three types of influenza vaccine: inactivated (the virus is “dead” [since a virus is not a living organism, just a

They count on you...

string of protein surrounded by a shell, it cannot be either alive nor dead]), recombinant, and live-attenuated (the virus is weakened). The recommended type of vaccine depends on the patient’s age and health. This season, the inactivated vaccine, given by injection, will contain inactive components of four different viruses (quadrivalent). This vaccine is approved for those aged six months and older. A higher-dose inactive vaccine is available as an option for those 65 and older. The recombinant vaccine, made without eggs or influenza virus, is available for those 18 and older, especially if they have any egg allergies. The live-attenuated vaccine, given as a nasal spray, is approved for those aged two to 49 with normal-functioning immune systems. Normally, immunity from influenza vaccine appears about three to four weeks after it is given and lasts about six months. It is recommended that the vaccine be given by the end of October, but it can be administered at any time during flu season, which is usually from late Octo-

Page 29 ber to early May. The effectiveness of the vaccine varies from year to year and is based upon the types of viruses in circulation, the match between the vaccine and the virus type, and the age and health of the patient. In 2017 – 2018, flu vaccine administration is estimated to have prevented 7.1 million illnesses, 109,000 hospitalizations, and 8000 deaths. All three vaccine types are considered very safe. The most common side-effect of injected vaccines is soreness at the injection site. Side-effects from the nasal spray vaccine can be nasal congestion, headache, and sore throat. In certain flu seasons, the inactivated vaccine has been associated with a slightly higher risk of a rare neurological condition called Guillain-Barre syndrome. The live vaccine should be used carefully in people with asthma because of a possible increased risk of wheeze. Mount Sinai South Nassau Poll: More than 50% Polled Do Not Plan to Get COVID-19 Vaccine Nine months into a worldwide pandemic, less than half of metro area residents plan to get a COVID vaccine when it becomes available, according to the latest Mount Sinai South Nassau public health poll, sponsored by Bethpage. The poll’s findings underscore concerns about the vaccine’s development and lack of trust in the FDA’s regulatory process to ensure its safety and effectiveness. On a positive note, most area residents believe the reopening of local schools has gone well, the poll showed. Forty-one percent of those polled have school age children and about one-half of these respondents said their child returned to school at least part-time. More than 90% of these parents gave schools high marks for suc-

cessfully reopening. And mask wearing in public has gained widespread acceptance, according to the poll. Another key finding of the poll: respondents reported high job loss due to COVID among minorities in our area as compared to whites. And only half of those over 65 who were employed before COVID are still working at the same job. Only 46 percent of respondents to the poll said they would get a COVID vaccine. Among those who said they would not get it, two-thirds said they believe the vaccine is being rushed and they question its safety. Only a slim majority, 54% of 600 metro area residents polled, trust the FDA to impartially determine that a COVID vaccine is safe and effective to release.

Captain & Katz Provide Updates at 100th Precinct Meeting By Katie McFadden

At the October 100th Precinct Community Council meeting, Captain Carlos Fabara caught up participants on the latest crime stats and Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz gave updates on her first 10 months in office. On Wednesday, October 28, a few dozen people joined the Community Council on Zoom for the latest updates in the 100th Precinct. President Kathy Heavey kicked off the meeting with some updates including letting people know about an upcoming Thanksgiving Food Drive on Saturday, November 14. The 100th Precinct Community Council will be in front of the Rockaway Park Stop and Shop from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. to collect food donations, which will go to the First Congregational Church’s food pantry in time for Thanksgiving. Heavey then introduced Officer Maurice Moore who presented some Covid-19 Halloween safety tips ahead of the holiday. Captain Carlos Fabara then presented the recent crime statistics in the precinct for the 28-day period of September 28 to October 25. “We are even in crime. We did not see an increase or decrease in overall major crimes,” he announced. “We had no murders to speak of and no rapes. Our robberies were up somewhat. We had three vs. one, so there was an increase of two robberies. Our felony assaults went down. We had 10 felony assaults in the Precinct vs 12, so that’s a decrease of two. We did see a spike in burglaries. We had eight in a 28-day period vs. zero in a period for 2019. All are being investigated and we do have several arrests in some of those, but it is something we’re working on. We saw a decrease in grand larcenies. We have nine vs 15, so that’s a decrease of six and that’s good news. And we had one grand larceny auto versus three, so we saw a decrease of two. We saw one shooting in the Hammels. A man was shot one time

in the left leg in the hip. He is in stable condition and has been released from the hospital. The investigation is ongoing.” Queens District Attorney Katz then talked about some of the ongoing during her first 10 months in office. She announced that she has brought Dan Brown on board to her staff. “I always thought he was a great liaison to the Rockaway community and I’m excited to have him as part of the team,” she said. Katz said that in her time as DA, the bail laws have changed twice, as well as discovery laws. Her time in office has coincided with the breakout of the coronavirus pandemic, which has forced her office to go 100% virtual. This also comes as a time when the nation has been questioning how policing should look across the country. “It’s been an amazing experience,” she said. Katz said that throughout, she has tried to be fair in her decision. “The one thing I’ve tried to bring to this office is to bring a steady hand,” she said. Giving examples, Katz said she did not prosecute social distancing or curfew infractions and she doesn’t prosecute small levels of marijuana. “But if you’re going to bring guns into my borough and you’re going to sell them to our kids in our borough, I’m coming after you, I’m prosecuting you and we will get a conviction from it. If you’re caught with a loaded weapon outside of your home, we are going to prosecute

you. It is a balance I think this office has tried to achieve.” Trying to achieve this balance, Katz said her office has been working with both the NYPD as well as community organizations. “I think there’s too many folks taking one side or another. I think there needs to be a

lot less taking sides and a lot more listening and answering questions,” she said. She said in the wake up an uptick in shootings across the borough, there has been a combination of factors that have made gun violence a difficult problem to deal with between people wearing masks, less people on the street to serve at witnesses, and a high number of resignations in the police department, leaving the NYPD understaffed. “All of these things are coming together, and shootings have increased, and it’s been one of the major issues we’ve been dealing with. But I have not deferred one prosecution because of Covid.” Due to Thanksgiving, next month’s 100th Precinct Community Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 18 at 7 p.m. on Zoom. Sarina Deeb defeated Layla Hirsch. Shawn Spears defeated VSK. Kenny Omega defeated Penta El Zero M. The Match of the Night was Eddie Kingston vs. Matt Sydal. This was the typical Good vs Bad but with a very good story told by both men inside the ring. Eddie Kingston portrays a great bad guy and never fails to entertain. This was a good solid match to watch. Now, we have spoken a lot about what it takes to become a professional wrestler but in this week’s column, we will talk about

how much a professional wrestler makes for a salary. A young wrestler starting off in the Independent Wrestling Scene (which are smaller promotions located throughout the United States) can make anywhere from $20 to $30 per match, and sometimes earning a little more if he or she helps out with the show. I know of areas where wrestlers starting off making $10 to $15 per match. As the wrestler starts to gain more popularity, they can make anywhere from $30 to $50 per match. If the wrestler has merchandise such as t-shirts and photographs, this is a secondary source of revenue. Once the wrestler has established himself and has started touring in other states, they can earn $100 to $150 per match plus travel and lodging expenses if they are negotiated in advance. If the wrestler gains an opportunity to work for a major promotion, under contract they can make anywhere from $80,000 to

$120,000 per year with additional revenue streams coming from merchandise sales and special appearances. In order to continue to increase their salary, "tenure" plays an important part in a wrestler’s career and as he or she continues to grow in popularity, the wrestler can re-negotiate their contract for a higher salary and concessions. You have some popular wrestlers who at the end of their contract, leave to other major wrestling promotions for more money. In closing, there are three factors that play into a wrestler having financial success tenure, popularity and proper investment of their money. The question of the week comes from Ronald P. in Belle Harbor and he asked, "Why is Jim Cor-

nette so hard on the AEW brand? I like AEW and find them very entertaining." Excellent question, Ronald, and you have to understand where a man like Jim Cornette comes from. He comes from a time when "Kayfabe" was alive and well, and protecting the business was the number one priority. During his time, wrestlers were not as acrobatic as wrestlers of today. Wrestling was simple and the focus was mainly on telling a story between good vs. bad and wrestlers never revealed the secrets of the business. Jim Cornette is very into the old style of wrestling, which is not to say he does not understand the newer styles of wrestling, but he is a wrestling purist who is not afraid to state his opinion on the current wrestling product. Keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com. You can follow me on Facebook @ ericjayden and on Twitter @followthebadguy. Have a great week!
