Steve Belson Swim & Music Fest is Saturday This weekend, Steve Belson, a longtime lifeguard and firefighter, who lost his life on 9/11, will be remembered. The 16th Annual Steve Belson Memorial Ocean Swim and Music Festival is Saturday, August 5. Belson was a lifeguard for 10 years, a son, a brother, a friend, and a firefighter who made the ultimate sacrifice while trying to save lives in the World Trade Center. On Saturday, on Beach 92nd Street, at what is now called Bell’s Beach, all are welcome to join in an ocean swim in his honor. There will be a one-mile competitive swim at 8 a.m. and a half-mile leisure swim at 10 a.m. There will also be a ceremony to announce the winners of this year’s Steve Belson Memorial Scholarship.

A Time of Hope In The Midst Of Evil
To pay homage to Belson’s days as a lifeguard, a few lifeguards who work in Rockaway are awarded a $1,000 scholarship towards college. The lifeguards are chosen through an application process. How many awards are given, depends on how much money is raised at the after party. Each year, on the evening of the event, a music festival is held where people pay a small fee for admission, which goes toward the scholarships for the next year. This year, the after party is at Bungalow Bar. Starting at 7 p.m., there will be live music by Squid and Bill Kirchen, plus special guests. ***** Cuisine by Claudette, the popular catering and dining spot on Beach 116th Street has had a presence at Riis Park the last couple of summers. Their presence just got more prominent as they have taken over the spot vacated by Slice O’ Whit at Bay 9. As for Whit’s next stop, we haven’t heard but our ears are straining. ***** It’s already been five years since the City put out an RFP seeking ideas for the Rockaway Courthouse on Beach 91st and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. In 2013, a group headed by Uri Kaufman got the historic building for $50,000. The plan was to pour some $10 million into the place and turn it into a medical center. The plan fell apart and the developer considered other uses but so far,
THURSDAY, AUGUST 3, 2017 nothing. Rockaway no longer needs such a medical center (a brand new state of the art building is going up at Beach 105th Street). With Rockaway enjoying new found status, we bet lots of great proposals would be submitted if a new RFP was issued. ***** A couple of weeks ago, Lisa Colangelo (formerly of the Daily News), now with amNewYork reported that a survey by the Citizens Budget Commission revealed that people who live in Community Board 14 (that’s you Rockaway!) are some of the most dissatisfied, least happy people in the City. Funny, we’ve never heard anyone, ever, complain about anything in Rockaway. ***** The Broad Channel Athletic Club (BCAC) has a fun event planned for Friday, August 11 at 7 p.m. at 17th Road Park. They’re planning the First Annual 100th Precinct Cops Vs. Kids Basketball Game. The Shamrocks from the Summer Youth Basketball League will

If you’re waiting in Brooklyn we know that’s not much comfort). ***** Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican candidate for mayor, took a stroll along Beach 116th Street on Monday and posted a video of her observations on her Facebook page. She noted the abandoned buildings and remarked about the panhandling plague. She said the area “needs some TLC,” and that businesses could use some incentives from City Hall. Someone sent us another video of her taking notice of The Rockaway Times news rack outside the 116th subway stop!

The Arverne By The Sea (ABTS) developers announced that they recently broke ground on Phase I of The Tides, the latest development along the ocean in the Beach 60’s. Designed by Urbahn Architects, The Tides, a 214unit market-rate rental community, will consist of two mid-rise buildings offering a mix of commercial-retail and parking on the ground floor, and luxury apartments on the upper levels. According to ABTS officials, units ranging from studios to three bedrooms will feature contemporary upscale finishes including wood floors, quartz countertops in the kitchen and bathrooms, glass backsplashes and stainless steel appliances in the kitchens. Many of the apartments will offer balconies and direct ocean views. The first building of Phase I is already 25 percent completed and will feature 126 units with ground floor retail space.

116th Eyesores Still Sore OWNER SAYS NEGOTIATIONS UNDERWAY By Kevin Boyle
Is it déjà vu all over again or might something actually happen with the former Sand Bar and string of vacant stores that run from the new boardwalk down Beach 116th Street? Local resident Esther Konig, one of the principals of Seawave Realty, the group that has owned the property and the next-door Park Inn Nursing Home since 1978, says they “are in serious negotiations with interested developers.” In August 2016 Konig came before a group of merchants and residents and told the crowd that that she “wants to see good things happen” at the site and would have an answer about its development within “three months.” When the three months lapsed, Konig told The Rockaway Times,
“Things are taking longer than I expected. When there is news to tell, I will let you know. Patience, patience. Good things come to those who wait.”
Waiting is wearing a little thin on residents and nearby storeowners who see the dilapidated stores – vacant since Hurricane Sandy in 2012 – as a
drag on the street’s economy and atmosphere. Marc Caller, who is developing the old Beach Club property across the street, says the eyesores are “the biggest obstacle to Beach 116th Street reaching its great potential. Sadly, people in the neighborhood have known that a lot longer than I.” Konig said on Wednesday that although “serious negotiations” are underway, she “does not have a time frame at this point” as to when a sale might occur. She also said, "There are several options being discussed” and was talking with more than one developer but is “bound by confidentiality agreements” preventing her from providing more details. At last year’s public appearance and in 2015, in a phone interview with NY1 cable news, Konig said the future of the Sand Bar and adjacent stores was tied in with the future of the Park Inn Nursing Home. The adult care business leases space in the Park Inn building. That lease was soon up for renewal, Konig said, and its status would affect other business decisions including the future of the Sand Bar. According to Konig, the lease negotiations are still ongoing and are bound by a confidentiality agreement as well. Presumably, such negotiations will still have an impact upon what happens with the Sand Bar. Of the Sand Bar and vacant stores, Konig has said, “We want it to be something beautiful to attract people from the neighborhood and people from beyond. I understand the complexities of the neigh-
THURSDAY, AUGUST 3, 2017 borhood, and I really care about the neighborhood." Her stated care is not necessarily shared by partners in Seawave Realty. Any decision on the transfer of the property is subject to a consensus of partners most of whom reside outside the area. Looming right next to the string of vacant stores is the decaying Park Theater owned by Michael Konig. That building, save for a brief time in the 1990’s, has been vacant for more than thirty years. In August, 2014 there were reports that Konig was set to renovate the building as an Urgent Care center. He hired a project manager and architects to get the project started. Those plans were seemingly halted when news broke that a medical center was being built at Beach 105th Street. On Tuesday, Konig said plans were being worked on for a new project but offered no more specifics. He said development of the property was expected to start in “spring of 2018.”

Fun Times at Night Out
Night Out Against Crime was a fun time on both ends of the peninsula. The community came out to the 100th Precinct’s event on Beach 94th and the 101st Precinct’s event at O’Donohue Park for a night of activity and bonding between community members and the precincts. A Jane Doe was found in Jamaica Bay this week. On Monday, July 31, at around 11:20 a.m., the United States Park Police (USPP) Marine Unit was doing their routine patrol when the officers spotted a body floating in the water in the middle of the channel near the Cross Bay Bridge, according to USPP spokesperson, Sergeant David Somma. The Marine Unit officers, Thomas Blaney, Timothy Cosgro and Christopher Pickel, retrieved the body and brought it back to the Marine Unit office at Riis Landing near the Marine Parkway Bridge, where they were met by the 100 Precinct Detective Squad and representatives from the Medical Examiner’s Office. The officers who responded

determined that there was no foul play involved. The victim was a white female, approximately 50 years old. She had no identifying scars, marks or tattoos and there was no identification on the body. By press time, the victim was indentified as a woman from Rockaway Park, who suffered from depression and Aspergers. Out of respect to the family, the name is being withheld.

Glamping Coming to Fort Tilden By Katie McFadden
Glamping is coming to New York City, with a pilot program right in Fort Tilden this month. With glamping being a new thing for the city, some may not be familiar with the term meaning “glamorous camping.” Turn in your tent pitching skills and unrolling a sleeping bag for rolling into a fully-made queen-size bed in a 12’ x 14’ tent. And don’t worry about mucking it or making nature’s call in the woods. Hot showers and bathrooms are included. Add in side tables, decorative rugs, mirrors, seating and a lounge, and it’ll just be like staying in a hotel, except you’re outdoors and there’s no TV or WiFi. However, there will be s’mores. It’ll all be happening in Fort Tilden starting August 11 with Terra Glamping’s luxury camping pop-up, in conjunction with the National Park Service (NPS). Earlier this year, NPS put out a Request for Proposals for an overnight camping pilot. “It wasn’t specifically for glamping, but Terra Glamping had the best proposal to match our requirements,” NPS spokesperson, Daphne Yun said. NPS began camping programs in Gateway National Recreation Area in 2012. “We have camping sites at Floyd Bennett Field, Fort Wadsworth and Sandy Hook, but it’s more traditional camping. We’ve been wanting to expand camping in a lot of different ways, so people who aren’t necessarily comfortable camping in a tent can try it out. We have programs that teach people how to camp and wanted more programs where people didn’t have to really bring anything. Terra Glamping was chosen based on their compatibility for proposed use,” Yun said. Glamping may be a new concept for New York, but Terra Glamping isn’t new. CEO Rebecca Martin and COO Da-
vid Levine started offering glamping around the country, but decided to focus on more permanent campsites in 2015, when they formed Terra Glamping. Their first site was at Woodstock, NY until they set up a permanent camping site in Sonoma County, California. After being awarded the pilot from NPS, Terra Glamping is ready to give New York another taste of upscale camping. “We’re incredibly excited. Fort Tilden is an amazing location. The site is a 90 second walk to the beach and people will be able to hear the roar of the ocean at night from their tents. I don’t think people think of glamping when they think of New York City, but now they can,” Martin said. Tents start at $200 a night, with higher prices on weekends. Guests will have access to a two-person tent with a queen bed, plus a continental breakfast in the morning, a nightly campfire with s’mores, a grilling area, plus towels, robes and toiletries in the bathroom facility. There will only be five tents at the site and the pilot program only runs until September 24. Martin says tents have already started to be booked. We have this incredible National Park in the backyard of New York City, but there’s so many people in New York that don’t know it exists. The extra incentives served as great motivation for participants to do their best work, and they sure did. Participants had two hours to create their masterpieces before judges had the tough decision of picking the best ones. Casey Brouder, founder of Poseidon’s Parade, Alex Zablocki, Executive Director of the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy and Sophia Skeans, Vice President of the Rockaway Artists Alliance Board, were giv-
en the task of judging and with so many impressive pieces, it wasn’t easy. In the 8 and Under category, Tim and Tommy Nichtern, and Connor and Owen Hayden, made an interactive skeeball game out of the sand, which viewers could actually play, earning them first place. Zain and Rayaan Qureshi’s turtle earned them second and Bella and Beldon Mai’s beetle took third place. There was some tough competition in the 9 to 15 age category with 16 different groups in the running. However Trevor Benjamin, Jason and Xiceate Calvache, Sylvia Mastros and Diana Rivera paid homage to the popular new toy, the fidget spinner, earning them first place. Rockaway mermaids Lauren Ueira, Tessa and Finnian Sullivan, and Elizabeth Werther made a mermaid of their own, which took second place. Madison and Andrew Shamloo and Danny Fleming’s starfish earned them third. The adult category, 16 and up, was also a tough one to judge with so

Taner Seyt and Emil Seitmouratov took inspiration from the humpback whale that washed up on the beach back in April and recreated it, making them this year’s first place winners in the adult category. Christine McFarlane, with the help of Clover, Saige and Harmony, created a beautiful, detailed mermaid, which took home second place. Last but not least, Jessica McMilleon’s octopus earned her third place in the adult category. Thanks to everyone who came out and made this a great event! All of the participants put in hard work. Special thanks also goes out to Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office for donating the funding for buckets and shovels, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato for coming out to show her support, the Rockaway Business Alliance and most importantly, Portia Dyrenforth, Rockaway Administrator for the Department of Parks and Recreation, and all of the Parks Staff that helped make this event possible. FERRY GUY FUMES Dear Editor: (This letter was sent to the NYCEDC): Since its launch, the 2017 Rockaway ferry has been a huge success as far as ridership numbers (even more than I expected) but that is clearly still no excuse for leaving commuters at the dock in Rockaway or Manhattan. The ridership of the Rockaway ferry to Manhattan during off commuting times and on the weekends during the summer has been a great bonus to the city's tourist econ-
omy. Furthermore, the Rockaway ferry has attracted riders from Southern Queens, Brooklyn and parts of Nassau County. Great ridership numbers on the ferry does not make up for poor planning when at meeting after meeting, residents throughout the city said the boats are too small for the commuters traveling to and from work. The facts below should have been taken into consideration when planning the ferry and choosing the operator: Seastreak used the same size ferry boat as the Citywide Ferry for the Rockaway route after Hurricane Sandy (149 passengers), and after two months of use, it was determined that the ferry was too small for the commuter runs. Seastreak then used a 250-passenger ferry and no one was left at the dock in Manhattan, Rockaway or the BAT Pier. After the storm, the morning ferry route was 5:40-6:30 a.m. and 7:40-8:15 a.m. Since most people have to be at

work before 9 a.m., there were only three commuter runs to Manhattan and the 149-passenger ferry was too small, so Seastreak had to use the 250-passenger ferry. When the Seastreak ferry was in service, the population of Rockaway was reduced by 10-15 percent at least due to storm's dislocation. I would estimate that once the ferry service was reintroduced, three years later and the population was back to normal, the number of ferry riders should increase by 10-15 percent or on a good day putting the ridership at about 1,400 passengers per day. The best daily ridership during the summer was 1,200 passengers (after Hurricane Sandy), but there were factors that were not taken into consideration in planning the new ferry route such as the last departure to Rockaway from Manhattan in the morning during the summer was 8:35 a.m, so very few if any beachgoers went to Rockaway beach by ferry. The second summer
of ferry service, the beach replenishment took place and large sections of the beach were closed to swimmers. Beach 108th Street, closest to the ferry dock, was closed for most of July in 2014. The boardwalk was not fully restored ‘til a month before the 2017 ferry started and as a result, that has turned into an attraction for city residents. The cost of a ferry ride went from $3.50 to $2.75, a 20 percent reduction in cost and that has also increased ridership. Interconnecting the Rockaway ferry with the Citywide ferry system has also resulted in increased ridership to and from Rockaway. Rockaway is getting beachgoers traveling on the ferry from Staten Island and Jersey City, NJ and that wasn't factored in. I still cannot believe that a ferry contract was awarded from a picture of a ferry and there was no test run. The current ferry has only 118 Continued on page 37

Downtown Far Rock Rezoning Plans Sounds Good, But What Do Locals Need? By Kami-Leigh Agard

which a zoning change becomes law. The proposal includes the redevelopment of downtown’s long-abandoned shopping mall and some adjacent properties through the creation of an Urban Renewal Area. That means the city would use eminent domain or negotiations to take ownership of those properties, redesign the street grid, and work with private developers to build new housing, commercial and community facilities. The proposal also includes a rezoning of that area, the nearby streets and two public sites in the area. Altogether the proposal is expected to lead to an increase of 3,123 units of hous-

Local resident, Jeffrey Williams-Maisonet gave a telling testimony about what Far Rockaway youth need with this Rezoning. “Growing up to almost nothing, messed up side streets and sidewalks, a neighborhood that was very challenged and violent, and no opportunity for youth whatsoever, we need to hear and see more about this Rezoning plan,� Williams-Maisonet said. He then shared a nine-yearold’s diary entry about why he has no desire to live in the area: ‘I don’t want to own my parent’s home in this neighborhood because there’s nothing here for kids to do, no good places to eat, and no fun places for us kids.’ Williams-Maisonet ended by saying, “This is just another example of how young people feel in Far Rockaway, and why this plan is so cru-
cial to the community. There’s no point in building all these fabulous developments if we are not offering opportunities for those already living in the struggle. People do not change, when the neighborhood appears to be well, they change, when they see hope. We need a community space, more public schools, more job opportunities that could put people back on their feet and hope in the community again. So when we go outside to the city and tell people we are from Far Rockaway, we can be proud about it.� Many local residents and business owners in the area agreed that something needs to be done, but all with the aim of boosting the people already living in the area. St. John’s hospital also submitted a testimony in support of the plan. The subcommittee will likely take a final vote on the proposal on Monday, August 21 at 9:30 a.m. at 250 Broadway, the 16th floor Committee Room. That will be followed by a vote by the Land Use Committee, then a final vote by City Council.

The Reluctant Vegan

I am like most red-blooded American men in that I like a good steak, a hot dog, a hamburger, chicken and most meat products. I don’t like to think about how those items came to me, or what the process was, or even if any of that stuff is any good for me; if it tastes good, that’s good enough for me. Sometimes it’s just the memory of something tasting good, because not every steak is a good one. So I was in for a bit
of shock when I came home to the announcement by the mermaid that she was embarking on a three-week vegan diet and how would I like to join her! To say I felt ambushed is to put it bluntly; I mean I had never given any thought to being vegan, while my flippered mate had been considering this move in silence for quite some time. Thinking quickly on my feet, I queried whether that meant she would be preparing only vegan meals? The answer was equally swift: “duh!”
The name of the vegan diet is “Crazy, Sexy You” by Kris Carr. Since the first meal was upon us, I considered my options, and decided to try the first meal. I mean, maybe this diet would turn me into crazy, sexy me? And so I watched with trepidation as my Irish trained chef worked furiously in the kitchen, with a passion I had never seen for food before. There was much chopping, blending, and mixing. There were nuts of all kind, purees, pastes, and greens, oh yes, plenty of greens all mixed together. The first meal was very colorful, and I am a sucker for colors, and to my surprise it tasted very good. As I closed my eyes that night, I thought perhaps this might work. Well, after three weeks I can tell you that I abso-
lutely loved it. My soul mate developed cooking skills I never knew existed, and while I did not become one bit more sexy, my mind and body felt much better. I may have even lost a pound or two, but that is unconfirmed at this point. And I felt very comfortable looking at my animal friends without any latent guilt. Now I may have had some fish during this three week episode, and I might have had a hamburger that got lost and found its way into my tummy, but for the most part I stayed the course, even drinking some foul looking, but good tasting green stuff. Am I a changed man? Well, the answer there is a definite “maybe.” I still like eating hamburgers and hot dogs, and steak and sausage, but can I go with-
out that stuff for a day or two or more – it turns out the answer is yes! Is it better for you? Well again, if you listen to the experts, one of whom happens to live with me, the answer seems to be yes. Of course, you want to make sure that you’re not the healthy guy who could live to 100 but unfortunately has a house fall on you, and end everything prematurely. So if you see me on the boards drinking some salad with some quinoa on the side, know that I am still American. And if you drive by my house at night and you see me dunking an Oreo, please don’t tell the vegan community on me, I would hate to be ostracized, because despite the lack of meat, I have found that some vegans can get violent quickly! Who knew?

AF Part 2 Last week I discussed atrial fibrillation (AF), its causes, risk factors, and the use of blood thinners to prevent strokes, the most common problem caused by AF. Today I would like to review treatment of AF. The first way to prevent the development of AF and to make the return of a normal heart rhythm, or sinus rhythm, more likely is to lessen or improve the risk factors for AF. They are hypertension, diabetes, obesity, sleep apnea, alcohol abuse, and congestive heart failure. As mentioned last week, blood clots can form in the upper heart chambers, or atria, and are the cause of
strokes associated with AF. Using blood thinners to prevent clots from forming decreases the risk of stroke. There are several types of blood thinners – Coumadin (warfarin), which interferes with Vitamin K in the series of steps known as the clotting cascade which causes blood to clot, agents that poison platelets and prevent them from sticking together and forming a clot like aspirin and Plavix, and agents that act on other proteins in the clotting cascade like Xarelto, Pradaxa, and Brilinta. Treatment of AF focuses on two areas, namely rhythm and

rate control. When initially diagnosed, a patient with AF is first placed on a medication to keep the heart rate controlled. The target heart rate is between 80 and 100. Medications like B-blockers (metoprolol), calcium channel blockers (diltiazem), and sometimes digitalis block the rapid electrical pulses from getting to the lower heart chambers, or ventricles. Once the heart rate is adequately controlled the next decision is whether or not to attempt to restore sinus rhythm. A number of factors are considered in deciding whether or not to attempt to restore normal heart rhythm and these include the patient’s age, other medical conditions, presence or absence of symptoms, and the patient’s preference. Converting AF back to sinus rhythm can be done in a number of ways. Methods include medications like sotalol and amiodarone, electrical cardioversion (using a defibrillator to administer an electrical shock to the heart while the patient is anesthetized), and catheter ablation where a catheter is threaded into the heart, which
uses radiofrequency energy to burn the source of the abnormal electrical pulses. Before attempting to convert the patient back to sinus rhythm, it is important to ensure that no clots have formed in the heart. This is done with both an echocardiogram and a trans-esophageal echocardiogram (TEE) where a scope is passed into the esophagus to look for clots. Converting a patient with a clot in the heart back to sinus rhythm will almost always result in a stroke. Newer procedures are coming forward like surgical removal or clipping of the atrial appendage (remember the pyramidal shape of the atrium), which will prevent clots from forming, thereby removing the need for blood thinners. New medications and procedures for treating AF are appearing frequently and although the number of people with AF is expected to at least triple the present number, hopefully treatment for these individuals will greatly improve. Far Rockaway student, Jayda Crenshaw, 10, sold a whopping 1,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies this year, winning the title of top cookie seller in all of Queens County. The 2016-2017 cookie selling season marked the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts first selling cookies, and this season, Girl Scouts throughout the city sold 1,444,797 boxes of Girl Scout cookies. There were more than 10,000 Queens Girl Scouts competing for the top spot during the 2016-2017 sales year. Proceeds
from Girl Scout Cookie sales go towards raising money for each girlâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s scout troop, which gets used for enrichment activities and community service. LOCAL SCHOOLS TO GET SING FOR HOPE PIANOS Two local public schools have been selected to receive pianos this fall. Village Academy in Far Rockaway and P.S./M.S. 42 Robert Vernam School in Arverne are two of 50 city schools chosen to receive pianos through the Sing for Hope Pianos program. Last month, some may have seen a piano on the boardwalk near the Beach 86th Street Concession. The Sing For Hope Piano was on the boardwalk for three weeks. Now that instrument, along with the others from the program, will be donated to public schools across the city starting in September. However, the delivery, maintenance, and associated programming for each piano is estimated to cost $100,000 and the program has not yet been fully funded. The 50 schools were chosen through an application process from among the hundreds of NYC public schools without a working piano. Within the past decade, funding for the arts has
decreased by 47 percent. Sing for Hope looks to combat this by increasing direct access to the arts and placing pianos in underserved schools and communities. When transported to a school, each piano is delivered with great fanfare, complete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebratory concerts from Sing for Hope Artist Partners and students within the schools. Sing for Hope must raise $100,000 to cover the costs associated with bringing the pianos and a year of programming to New York City schools. The funds raised will be used for repair, rehabilitation, delivery, and maintenance of the 50 pianos; dynamic arts programming, including inspiring concerts and workshops; and educational tools, including online and printed music education resources, which are provided with each Sing for Hope Piano. For more than 20 years, Donald Ritter has been helping locals ride the waves of Breezy Point as owner of the Breezy Point Surf Shop. Now he can use a wave of support. In April 2017, Ritter was diagnosed with Stage 3B nonsmall cell lung cancer, which which is inoperable at this time. The diagnosis has not only been an emotional and physical struggle for Ritter and his wife, Casey, and their kids, Colton, 3, and Dawson, 1, but also a financial burden with medical expenses. Ritter has been undergoing chemo and radiation therapy, five days a week, which leaves him in constant pain and with very swollen feet, making working difficult. Ritter has always been active in Breezy Point. He has owned the Surf Shop for 26 years and has always been one to donate to causes in
need. He was also a volunteer EMT/Ambulance driver for many years with the Rockaway Point Volunteer Fire Department & Ambulance Corps. Now Ritter and his family could use some help. Angle Up for the Best Fishing Holes in The Rock & BC By Kami-Leigh Agard
The Rockaway Times cast a wide net to catch the who’s who of local fishermen/women to find out about the best fishing spots on the peninsula and Broad Channel. Get your rods ready, as our local fabulous king fish serve up all that is delish and special about fishing on our shores. According to Far Rockaway resident, Luis Love, Beach 17th to the first jetty on Beach 30th offers the best catch due to the inlet between Atlantic Beach and the east end of the peninsula. “I’ve been fishing since I was five years old. My dad and I used to take old beer cans, find an old hook in the sand and tie them up with dirty string to go fishing. I’ve fished in Broad Channel and other parts of the peninsula, but in my opinion, Far Rock is the best. “Over here we catch albacore, especially at this time because they like the warmer water. Also snappers, which are baby blue fish, which mature into snappers after they grow over 12 inches and are referred to as cocktails. Then after they grow over 20 inches, they become blue fish. Towards October to November, we get the big stripers. They come in to feed on the
bait because winter is coming, and they are looking for warm water. I have caught stripers here 53in long. At night, you have people coming out looking to catch sharks. September is when you see all the fishermen with their poles lining the shore,” Love said. Love said he prefers surf fishing, which is the sport of catching fish standing on the shoreline or wading in the surf. “It’s more of a fight compared to fishing on a boat, which I think is easier. To catch fish from the shore, we use metal jigs and poppers as bait. The poppers bounce up and down, mimicking a fish, and the big fish come in and attack it, and we reel them in. The jigs mimic the baby bunker because they shine in the water, which the big fish go after.” Tom McNicholas of Rockaway's oldest bait shop, Tom’s Bait and Tackle on Beach Channel Drive, is the source of everything fishing in Rockaway. Whether you're coming in to talk about the weather, get gas for your boat, grab some bait, fishing advice or a cup of joe, McNicolas serves up great service and even better conversation. According to McNicholas, around this time you can catch good-size por-
gies. “It’s been the best porgies I have seen in years. Also fluke and flounder, especially in the spring months of April and May. Boat fishing on the Bay is great,” McNicholas said. As a customer walked in inquiring about how to get a fishing license, he warned, “Get it now! Don’t let the cops catch you fishing without one. If you catch a fish that’s out of season or too small, they will fine you with a hefty ticket." Robert Ostacio and a group of friends, hailing from Brooklyn, were fishing on the bay wall near Tom’s since 6:30 a.m. that day. Unfortunately, all they caught after three hours were two medium-sized porgies. “I have been fishing here at this location for over 50 years, and this summer has been the worst. It could be because of the warmer water temperatures, which lowers the oxygen level in the water, or the wakes caused by the Ferry. But anyway, I love fishing in Rockaway,” Ostacio said. Seasoned sea dog, Jennifer O’Brien, fishing from her boat in Long Island and Rockaway since 1980, agreed. “Fishing in Rockaway is great, but I think the fish are being depleted because of the draggers (commercial fishing vessels). Also contributing to the slow down in catch is global climate change, plastic bags, which choke the fish and the rising acidity in the water. Also warmer temps in the water are changing the currents, also there is less marshland to filter the water.” Broad Channel bay man, Kenny Monahan, disagrees. “I have been fishing in the bay since I was three years old. The fishing this year has been great. It’s either because the water got cleaner or the fish got more adaptable,” Monahan said. He coins BC as the Irish Keys. “My family has been living and fishing here for over a century. The average depth of the water in the bay is 31 feet, which is fertile ground to catch black fish and fluke. Sharks spawn
in the bay. Fishing is second nature for my family. My mom used to take us out at night to jack for crabs, which we used to sell. We either fished or caught crabs for our dinner, or to sell to support the family.” Monahan’s eyes started to tear as he talked about his love for BC and the bay. “I’m a Pisces man. We are known for being emotional. But I love where I live, and my family’s history here. Turning people on to how beautiful our bay is and the great fishing here, gives me an awesome feeling. Every year, the fishing changes. However, the bait comes back, the big fish come back and the people come back,” Monahan said. Eddy Pastore of Rockaway Beach said his biggest draw to moving to Rockaway was the fishing in Breezy Point. However note that in Breezy, you have to get a permit to fish there, and they only issue 750 permits a year. Pastore said, “From the beginning of October, everyone knows that’s my fishing time. My trophy fish is striped bass. I love fishing in Breezy because you feel that you are not in NYC. It's like you're in a different world, where you have tranquility. It’s just you and the fish.” So locals, grab your poles and snag the catch of the day!

WEISS’ RESTAURANT – BROAD CHANNEL – 1930

Meyer Weiss opened his famous eatery in Broad Channel for the season of 1930. Although times were bad because the Great Depression was just beginning, Weiss’ survived. The only time operations ceased was during WWII. No gas, no cars running, no people coming down to the beaches or to eat at
a roadside restaurant. Weiss’ took a chance, reopened in the cold months of the 1943 season and stayed open all year round, 24/7 from that moment on. Gasoline rationing began easing up a bit. This week’s large photo is actually an old matchbook cover in full color. The small photo is an actual post card marked 1944 and was going to San Francisco, CA. The year 1949 saw a great improvement when remodeling
was done. A two hundred foot service counter was built. Weiss’ now had 750 seats available to dine and had 650 parking spots. A few years later, more parking spots were available on the other side of Cross Bay Boulevard. Anything from a hotdog to a prime rib dinner could be ordered. A favorite of many folks was chow mein on a hamburger roll with all the trimmings and French fries.
Weiss’ was once described as “The place where the elite meet to eat, for a meal or treat”, and the tip was bigger than the bridge toll. Weiss’ closed its doors in the mid 1970’s. A victim of changing times. The land was cleared by demolition. Today, the Broad Channel Library and a Playground occupy Weiss’ ol’ location. Weiss’ was sorely missed in the years to follow, and a great memory for many folks.

Hobby Tools for the DIYer By Artie Wallace
Each week I write an article for the DIYer’s. Most weeks they are geared towards larger projects. But there is a whole other group of DIYer’s out there, those that are focused primarily on small projects or hobbies. There is a whole other line of tools for the hobbyist. This week I would like to tell you a little about them. Hobby tools are tools that have a lot less power, smaller blades (on saws), etc, and are designed to only do the small projects. A good example would be a “Hobby miter box” verse a “standard use miter Box.” A standard use miter box has (on average) a 7¼” to 10” blade, a 15 amp motor, etc. A Hobby miter box has (on average) a 2” blade and a 7800 RPM motor. As you can see in the photo, there is a major difference. In addition to miter boxes, there is an entire line of tools geared towards the hobbyist. They including (but not limited to) lathes, drill press, planes, etc. To find these tools online, search for “hobby miter box,” “hobby drill press,” etc. or you can email me at the address below for direct links. Tools for the hobbyist are (on average) a lot less expensive than tools for larger projects. They are small-
er in size (so they are easier to store), but they are also limited to the smaller projects. They allow you to work with smaller things that you couldn’t do with the larger tools. If your focus is on crafts and/ or smaller hobby projects, I highly recommend considering investing in hobby tools. In future articles, I will be covering more hobby (smaller) projects. In conclusion, since the end of ferry service in 2014 to the start of ferry service in 2017 I have been to at least thirty ferry meetings in the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island and Brooklyn, and the one common theme that was brought up at these meetings by residents was taking the new ferry to Rockaway in the summer time and the passenger capacity during commuter times. So, for NYCEDC to say that large ridership of the Rockaway Ferry was totally unexpected is just not a true statement. If the ferry operator is going to use the same capacity ferry (149 passenger) on the East River as the Rockaway ferry route, of course there will be commuters left at the dock. The simple fact is that most of the Citywide Ferry System is on the 20-minute
schedule while the Rockaway ferry is on the hour. NYCEDC has only two choices — put the Rockaway ferry on the 20-minute schedule during commuting times or use larger ferries with the present schedule. The most important customers for the ferry system are the commuters going to work or school and they cannot be left at the dock. I have ended most of my letters on the Rockaway ferry with the statement, "The ferry service to Rockaway is the biggest investment in Rockaway that any Mayor has made in the last forty years." The statement is still true, and there should have been proper planning. No doubt, someone should be held accountable for this management and planning failure. Joe Hartigan

Along with his service to the American Legion, he is remembered for his charitable works for numerous programs to assist the needy as well as his many years dedicated to working with the Boy Scouts of America. You KNOW you should read your labels, but when you’re weaving through the supermarket aisles in a rush, it’s much easier to just grab a familiar product or a label that looks good and get out of there. They say not to judge a book by its cover, and the same goes with food packaging. While marketers splash claims on the front, the real dirt is on the back on the nutrition label. With just a few tips from this nutrition label cheat sheet, your cart will be filled with nutritious food and you’ll be out the door in no time! The ingredients list : First things first! Don't fall for claims like: "Made with real fruit," "100 percent Daily Value of Vitamin C," "Made with Whole Grains," "Natural," "Sugar Free," "Fat Free," "Cholesterol Free" and "Gluten Free." Fun Times at the Graybeards Family Fun Run
The 15th edition of the Graybeards Family Fun Run once again defied dire early weather predictions, producing a fabulous night with 500 runners participating in at least one race. Spectators more than doubled race attendance, cheering the runners of all ages from one to 86, and then convening in the Fr. Grogan Memorial Schoolyard at St. Francis de Sales (SFDS), to celebrate with food and beverages, music from Gearth, Wind & Fireman, games and children’s rides, raffles and awards. This year’s race was very special, honoring the memory of SFDS parishioner Eileen M. Lavin, and everyone was true to the theme to Always Run with your Heart. The children’s races kicked things off at 6:30 p.m. with waves of kids pouring down Rockaway Beach Blvd to receive their ribbons after completing their trek. Rockaway’s Special Athletes followed, drawing a tremendous response from the crowd. The 1 Mile set off at 7 p.m. and Sean Mulvihill took the trophy in 5:15. Anthony Markle, Joseph Alessandro, Kiernan Smith, and Christopher Reilly completed the top five. Hanna Mills was female champion followed by Corinne Connelly, Emily Thompson, Noelle Po-
lanco, and Nancy McDade. This year’s 5k raced once again featured segments along the Boardwalk, Rockaway Beach Boulevard, and Neponsit Avenue. Patrick Goldberg reclaimed his title in 18:45 trailed by Fred Murgida, Tom Patchett, Alex Goldberg, and John Conroy. Caroline Gifford won the female plate in 24:17. Meghan Murphy came in 2nd, Kerry Brady 3rd, Siobhan Fitzgerald 4th and Kiera Price 5th. Tom Patchett posted the best combined time in the Family Run, the Kevin Kearney Rockapulco Run, and the BCAC Shamrock Shuffle/ Dawn’s Fun Run, to capture the Rockaway Triple Crown. Caroline Gifford retained the crown on the female side. Special thanks to Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato and Councilman Eric Ulrich for their support of the Triple Crown series. Mother Nature played nice and held off the rain as we had some great games played this past weekend. At 9:30 a.m. on Field 1, the Mudsharks locked up a playoff spot as they swept the short-handed Misfits, 4-0 and 11-4. With the two losses, the Misfits dropped from 2nd down to 4th. Field 2 had Morning Wood beat up on the Orioles, 13-1 and 11-3. A big bet was on the line on Field 3 and Pete Torres cannot play the rest of the year as Old Head lost both to The Army, 6-5 and 15-5. Our “Game of the Week” was a battle and a half as both games went to extra innings. The Kings won 9-8 and then the Moneyballs won 3-2. The Knights of Columbus kept their hot streak going as they swept the Chuggernauts. Then the Member Berries swept the No-Shows, 11-6 and 8-2. The three teams in the West are set for the playoffs as the Moneyballs, Kings and Mudsharks clinched. As for the East, Morning Wood, KOC, The Army and Misfits are battling
