Broad Channel To Get First Postal Unit Since Sandy For the first time since Hurricane Sandy, Broad Channel will once again have a functioning location that will provide postal services to the community. Following efforts from Senator Chuck Schumer and Assemblyman Philip Goldfeder, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) agreed to install a new contract postal unit (CPU) in All American Deli. A CPU is an independent retailer under contract with the U.S. Postal Service that, while not considered a full post office, provides many of the same services and products. They are used by the Postal Service to give customers access to services when existing post offices are overcrowded or far from customers. CPUs may provide stamps, stamped envelopes, priority mail, certified mail, USPS tracking, and more. Prior to the storm, another CPU was stationed at the Baygull store, but following Sandy, the bagel shop and consequently the CPU closed down. In 2014, the Broad Channel Civic Association (BCCA) was informed by the Postal Service that their ap-
plication for a new CPU had been denied, citing a lack of need for a location in Broad channel despite years of having one prior to Sandy. Schumer and Goldfeder then intervened, writing letters to the Postmaster General, Patrick R. Donohoe, and working with the USPS at multiple levels. “Since Superstorm Sandy, seniors, families and other Broad Channel residents had been without access to essential postal services, making things even more difficult for this hard-hit community,” Schumer said. “While it took far too long, I am pleased that the USPS heeded our call and that the location for a new postal unit has been signed, sealed and will soon to be delivered to Broad Channel.” “In the last two years the BCCA has been fighting to have their local post offices reopen,” Dan Mundy, Jr., president of the BCCA, said. “Now, thankfully due to the assistance of Senator Schumer and Assemblyman Goldfeder, we have had success.”
Far Rockaway Street Renamed For Hero Cop A hero New York City police officer who lost his life responding to a Brooklyn fire last year was honored on Saturday, September 19 by having the Far Rockaway street near his house renamed in his honor. Dennis E. Guerra was responding to an intentionally-lit mattress fire by teenager Marcell Dockery in a Coney Island housing project when he inhaled toxic fumes while trying to save resi-
dents of the building. He tragically passed away three days later, leaving behind a wife, Cathy, and four children. Detective Dennis E. Guerra Way is on Grenada Place near Faber Terrace, close to Bayswater Point State Park. “I know he is watching over us right now in amazement,” Cathy said at the ceremony. “Dennis was a humble, loving and caring person that always tried to do what was right.”
Following Rebirth, Church Looks To Rebuild The House on the Rock Church, located on Beach 91st St., went through three consecutive tragedies in just a short time three years ago. Its founder and senior pastor passed away on October 18, 2012. Then on October 26 the founder’s son and assistant pastor, Garry Patrylo, was severely injured in a house fire. And as all of Rockaway knows, just days after that Hurricane Sandy ravaged the peninsula, destroying the church. Now, three years later, Pastor Patrylo and his family have recovered, but the church remains
unbuilt, and they are currently worshipping out of a small tent on a plot of land that they own. Inspired by his experiences, the pastor allocated $100,000, formerly from his retirement fund, to help build a new, permanent structure for House of the Rock Church. The church has also set up a GoFundMe campaign to accept donations from those looking to help rebuild. The fund currently has $100,045 in it and is looking to reach a goal of $520,000. If you are interested in donating, visit https://www.gofundme.com/riseupandbuild.

By Lou Pastina With October slowly approaching, Halloween will be right around the corner, and all the kids will be trick or treating, granted it might be a 90 degree day when that happens. With the fall sneaking over the horizon, I get to do one of my favorite things, and that is to visit cemeteries. I visit them during the rest of the year too, to pay my respects to various family members and friends who have left us. But I also like to visit really old cemeteries and look at the headstones, they tell fascinating stories. Some date back to the 1700s like the ones out east or the ones upstate. Then there are the ones in New York City like Trinity at Wall Street with Alexander Hamilton and Robert Fulton; or those at St. Paul’s on Broadway. Most of the cemeteries in Manhattan have been moved off the island to make room for progress, whatever that is. The boroughs were the lucky recipients of all those relocated from Manhattan. Brooklyn has Greenwood Cemetery, which is an amazing place not just because it has Leonard Bernstein, Boss Tweed and Charles Ebbet, and many other famous people, but also because it is where the Battle of Long Island at the start of the Revolutionary War took place. In addition it is part of the Civil War discovery trail. As you walk through that place you get a sense of what Brooklyn was like back in the 1600 and 1700s it’s so bucolic! Well worth the trip even if you don’t know anyone there. If you go through Cavalry in Queens you get a sense of the size of the place. The trees are amazing, its quiet, for obvious reasons, and secluded, and well, rather nice. It’s just that the price of admittance is rather high! The headstones are always interesting to read. When I visit relatives who have passed I learn that the names I knew my uncles as were not their real names. Uncle Tommy was really Carmine, Sammy was Savino, and Sal was Rosario...who knew this when they were alive? I certainly didn’t! Some have just simple head-
stones, others have pyramids or crosses or statues. Others have small brick houses for their families. All Faiths Cemetery in Queens dates back to the early 1800s. It’s filled with obelisks! You know just like the Washington Monument only much smaller. Apparently at one point that was the in thing. Also as you move through the cemeteries you can see the demographics of New York City, the waves of those who settled here, the Dutch, Germans, Irish, Italians, Chinese, etc. As in life and so in death, people reside in virtual neighborhoods. There is an old Jewish cemetery on the edge of Chinatown, known as Shearith Israel Cemetery, and it is one of my favorites because it is so old and it is literally in a backyard. Did you know it is the oldest Jewish cemetery anywhere in the United States? I have not been to the cemeteries lining the Jackie Robinson Parkway, but I am told they are amazing with a pond that was once part of the NYC water system and up high on a hill that gives a tremendous view of New York. Along that stretch the Jewish and Christian cemeteries border each other. I have visited cemeteries in Ireland and Italy and there is nothing like a foreign cemetery. There is one outside Rome and it’s called the Non-Catholic Cemetery! In that cemetery are the remains of John Keats, Percy Shelly, and Gregory Corso, the beat generation poet from America. That cemetery has cats roaming all through it and has a huge pyramid at its entrance. Cleopatra is not buried there but her influence was felt. I’d like to get to Sleepy Hollow and visit that cemetery one day. There is at least one cemetery in Rockaway that I know of, the Cornell Family Cemetery in Far Rockaway. That is the Cornell family of Cornell University and the cemetery has Revolutionary War and War of 1812 veterans buried there alongside a Native American. Hey October is coming, why not get a head start, you would be surprised how beautiful a NY cemetery can be on a fall day! It may be better than watching the NY Giants play!

The Wait Of the World When I was my son’s age – we’re coming to him in a second – I rang a doorbell and nobody answered. I waited a few beats and hit the bell again. When the door opened, some Zen-soaked guy said, “Patience is a virtue.” That little nugget stayed with me. At least the words did. Decades later, I’m still not virtuous. I was reminded of this shortcoming by my son. Now, it wasn’t the most profound thing my son has ever said. Come to think of it, profound hasn’t happened yet. He’s still a teenager, so the profound stuff is a ways off. At least
until he does what Jeb Bush did 40 years ago (for those who missed the last candidates’ debate: Jeb smoked the devil’s lettuce in a college dorm room). Anyway, my son said the equivalent of the sky is blue. He said, Dad, you hate to wait. No shitski, Sherlock, I said. Introduce me to someone who does. No, but you really hate it. I’m sure this exchange came after I left a doctor’s office before actually seeing the doctor or got off the line at the Post Office. My son would rather endure a long wait than feel the eyes of others as they
fall upon us on our way out. For him, it’s real simple. Those other people waiting are gonna think we’re jerks if we just leave. I try to tell him the people behind us won’t think we’re jerks. They’ll think we did them a favor. I know otherwise though. Just because the line got shorter, doesn’t mean the wait did. See, there are two types of people: those who shift lanes in clogged traffic to get in the fastest moving lane and those who wait patiently in the lane they’re already in. I shift lanes. I’m not saying shifting is the sure fire way to go. Plenty of times I’ve swung into a lane only to see the lane I just moved from open up. In those cases, I usually blame myself for misreading the traffic flow or just my bad luck place in the universe. Forget virtue. I just want to rip the steering wheel off. Sometimes you’re forced into a dead end, like when you find yourself in Sears. Is there a worse place to get on line? You just need a shirt or belt and you see the dreaded line. I start thinking maybe I don’t need a shirt; maybe I could use the car’s jumper cables for a belt. Of course, some doctors are no better than Sears. They’ve got waiting rooms that look like the Van Wyck on Friday rush hour. We had some emergencies; a lot of people came in sick, they’ll tell
me at the desk. Then I wait and stew and resent the doctor. When I get in the room – I can’t decide if I want to ask fifty questions and get my fair share of time or hurry it up and do right by the people waiting. It’s not just the wait at the doctor’s. I know when I leave I’ll be getting caught at every red light. Full red lights. The kind just turning red as you get there so you have to wait out the entire sequence. I hate Mayor de Blasio for this. He hired the Department of Transportation Commissioner who is in charge of traffic lights. She’s either doing a lousy job or is doing what the mayor wants. I hate de Blasio in either case. Of course, because I lack the patience virtue I look too happy and downright goofy sometimes. Recently I walked into the Post Office and there was nobody on line, I mean nobody. I looked around for a hidden camera. There’s a prank coming and they’re filming it. This just can’t be true. I walked, I glided, up to the window. Sorry, our computers are down. You’re gonna have to wait. Now I wish there were other people there so I could roll my eyes and shake my head and share the pain. So, the question is, what’s the rush? I have no idea and I’m in no hurry to find out.

Big thumbs up to the Q and A event held at CROM (the gym at Beach 92nd street) last Thursday. Anthony Melchiorri (star of the TV show “Hotel Impossible”) interviewed former Muay Thai champion Chris Romulo in front of a crowd of at least 50 people (and seen by many more through Periscopes, a streaming service). Open to the public, the CROM venue was perfect. If you enjoy Inside The Actor’s Studio, Centerstage, or other oneon-one interview shows, this is for you. Here’s hoping the folks at CROM schedule more of these. ***** The Irish Fair is this weekend in Coney Island and it will have a big Rockaway imprint. Belle Harbor’s Marty McManus is the recipient of the Celtic Cross Award. Former pastor of St. Francis de Sales, Monsignor Geraghty will receive the Father Mychal Judge Memorial Award. NYPD Chief Kevin Ward, also of Belle Harbor, will be honored with the Police Officer Edward Byrne Memorial Award. And FDNY fire
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2015
fighter Patrick Nash will be honored with the Timothy Stackpole Memorial Award. ***** The Pope’s visit inspired those from Blessed Trinity Parish to create lifesize and life-like posters of the Pontiff. We saw photos of a smiling Pope with students and teachers. We saw one of him wearing a Mets hat. ***** Calling men over 50 who still have a few shots left in them. The YMCA is starting an over-50 basketball run. It’s NOT a league. It’s just plain old pick-up basketball with “gentleman’s rules” for the over the hill gang. The “50 & Over Basketball Legends” pick up program officially kicks off Sunday, October 4. You don’t have to be a member of the Y to start. Check in between 7:30-10 am. Bring a picture ID with date of birth. No ringers allowed! ***** Huge kudos to those who spearheaded the inaugural Poseidon’s Parade
including Portia Dyrenforth and the Parks Department. You never know how the first-of-anything will be and there were plenty of people who expected a dud. Well, it was a huge -did we say huge?—success. (Glad we gave it front page love!) The unofficial start of spring is the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Poseidon’s Parade might signal the unofficial end of summer. It was one of those great events that have people already looking forward to next year. Look for entire blocks and organizations to organize and build floats. ***** Just a short note on the new medical center to be built at the old Key Food site at Beach 105th street. Dr. Gelwan expects South Nassau to be a major partner but a little clarification is needed: FEMA funds designated for Long Beach will not be part of the Rockaway project. Should South Nassau come on board, Rockaway will be funded by private investment through the hospital and the development team. ***** The fun in Rockaway just won’t stop! “Celebrate, Rockaway!” is Saturday, September 26 from 12-5pm on the boardwalk at Beach 94th. Arts and crafts, CROM exhibition fights, music, and food by local vendors will be available. This event comes via The Rockaway Union, a not-for-profit organization hosted by the Queens
Page 7 Chamber of Commerce, comprised of the businesses, organizations, and residents between Beach 59th Street and 114th Street, dedicated to helping businesses succeed. ***** There will be a Free Tree Giveaway at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club on Sunday, October. This event is sponsored by the Rockaway Civic Association and is open to all residents of the Rockaway community. ***** What hurricane? A mere three years after Sandy, an oceanfront home has sold for more than $3 million. As far as we can tell, that’s the top price since the storm. Congrats to Lisa Jackson and Rockaway Properties, our centerfold real estate advertiser, who closed the deal on Monday. ***** It won’t happen again for another 32 years so you might want to take a look outside on Sunday night to see a supermoon. Starting at 10:11 pm and lasting a little more than an hour, the supermoon occurs for three reasons: the moon is full, closer to the earth than usual, and the earth casts a shadow on the moon. Weather permitting you should be able to see a big reddish ball in the sky. It’s safe to observe directly unlike a solar eclipse. Expect unusually high tides as well.

Scrawl Back To Us: Fun Event Makes Rockaway Return
By Dylan Watton
Rockaway is widely known by locals and guests alike as New York City’s ultimate summer destination. This was highlighted in summer 2015 as Rockaway had an estimated 7.7 million visitors, according to the Parks Department and outlined in last week’s Rockaway Times. As the sun winds down its schedule and the weather gets cooler, Rockaway often goes back to being a strictly locals town, and a sleepy one at that. Not if Max Power has anything to say about it. For the second consecutive year, Power has organized the Rockaway Scrawl, a neighborhood-wide bar, restaurant, and shopping event designed to shine a light on some of Rockaway’s finest local businesses. It will take place all day Saturday, September 26, with hours varying by location, from stores and shops ranging from Beach 129th Street to Beach 90th Street. The peninsula is not even the first place in the city where Power has run the event. “I developed the Scrawl for Myrtle Avenue in Brooklyn when it was just starting to grow and add more businesses (shops, bars, restaurants) much like Rockaway is do-
ing lately,” Power said via email. Myrtle Avenue is one of Brooklyn and Queens’ major throughways, stretching through neighborhoods that, like Rockaway, have undergone remarkable transformations over the past few years, such as Bushwick, Clinton Hill, and Fort Greene. In fact, it is in one of these neighborhoods where Power first implemented his Scrawl idea. “A friend of mine who had just opened The Emerson Bar at 561 Myrtle Avenue in Clinton Hill wanted me to come up with a bar crawl for Myrtle Avenue,” he said. “As a friend and patron of many of the businesses old and new I felt with the varying sizes and clientele of the establishments on Myrtle it would be better to crowd source and create a choose-your-own-adventure bar/restaurant crawl.” The goal, in Power’s eyes, was to show locals and visitors what the new establishments were offering to the area in a fun and inventive method that lasted all day long. “Now we are doing that in Rockaway in hopes of proving to outsiders that Rockaway is still open after Labor Day and to let the locals know how much is still going on all year long while also rewarding them with a day of
awesome deals and a chance to win prizes,” he added. By visiting as many restaurants, bars, and shops as possible, Scrawl participants increase their chances to win prizes by answering trivia questions, getting their cards stamped, and more. This year, the grand prize for having the best Scrawl Card is $495 in gift certificates. Among the businesses participating in the Scrawl are Pico, Jameson’s, The Wharf, Kerry Hills, Bungalow Bar, Caracas, Community House, Playland Motel, Uma’s, Zingara Vintage and Lola Star. In total, over 20 local businesses will be joining in on the Scrawl. Each participating business is offering special deals to those with Scrawl cards. There are a limited number of Scrawl cards, so those interested in taking part are encouraged to buy their cards beforehand at any of the participating businesses. Buying the card in advance also allows the benefit of studying the cards for trivia and bonuses as well as planning out the route that works best. And as a special hint, you may want to make Local Liquids your first stop on Saturday. See http://maxpowerscrawl.com/ for more info.
Safety and the DIYer By Artie Wallace Each week I try to cover something a little different, this week I would like to put the focus on safety. On the average, one-fourth of the DIYers get injured each year (some minor injuries and some not so minor). Some of the faults lie with thinking, “I am only changing an outlet,” “It will only take a minute,” or “I saw the contractor doing it like this.” There are no shortcuts when it comes to safety. Remember the old slogan, “we are professionals, don’t try this at home.” Someone that works on home projects every day has a lot more experience than the average homeowner, so they will do things a lot differently. As a DIYer, here are a few safety rules you should always follow without exception. Always make sure the power is off before working with electric. Always make sure Continued on page 18

The Rockaway Artists Alliance: A History, 20 Years Later By Dylan Watton
Art is a language anyone can speak. It connects people young and old, black and white, rich and poor in the name of creativity, imagination, and spirituality. In a community like Rockaway, which is diverse in age, race, and class, art serves as a bond between otherwise disparate populations, connecting uptown to downtown in a way that few other mediums can. From Whalemina to Riis Park, art lines the beaches and buildings of the peninsula. And in a postHurricane Sandy world, art serves as a healer for Rockaway, brightening the streets like the summer solstice. For twenty years, art has been at the forefront in this community thanks to the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA). Founded first as a meeting place for local artists looking to connect, the organization has experienced rapid growth over the past two decades, establishing itself as an indelible part of Rockaway’s identity. RAA’s many works can be found in local schools, major commercial centers like Beach 116th Street (where it’s headquarters remain), and of course Fort Tilden, where it has led a revitalization of the previously dormant former army base. “I was reading The Wave and some kind of community activist wrote a
letter saying Rockaway could be the new Cape May and that it was time to invite artists to come to Rockaway,” Patrick Clark, the founder and first president of the RAA and owner of Suntiles Stained Glass, said. “That was Harold Cornell. At that time there was the Rockaway Music and Arts Council (RMAC) that did festivals and stuff. I got together six or seven artists and we got together at my house on Beach Channel Drive.” John and Esther Grillo, both retired schoolteachers and longtime artists (Esther being responsible for the bus stop murals lining Shore Front Parkway) were among the first artists involved in the RAA. “We had support from RMAC but it wasn’t what we wanted,” Esther said. “They had been on the peninsula for a very long time and often had concerts in people’s homes. They were very successful but then the board aged out and there was no one to take the helm.” That first meeting at Clark’s house took place in March 1994. Several months later, in October, the organization held their first exhibition at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club. “We put together a committee to create the bylaws,” Clark said. “The process took such a long time! The whole group was crazily passionate about it. We
talked about different approaches we could take—is it an organization for anybody who is interested or strictly for established artists?” In March 1995, the RAA filed for official incorporation. Sometime after, Clark decided to leave the organization. After a brief tenure as president by former Beach Channel High School teacher Steve Yeager, Geoff Rawling, an artist hailing from England who had been in Rockaway since 1989, took over as president. It began a nearly 15-year tenure for him. “My vision was much more about having an arts center that everybody would come to,” Rawling said. The RAA had found a temporary home at the former Park Theater on Beach 116th Street, across from the
old Beach Club, where they housed exhibitions and galleries. But it was not serving the needs of the RAA or the community in the way Rawling envisioned. “The Department of Youth had just come out with a study that determined that Rockaway was the most underserved population in the city. But the nice thing about Rockaway is that it’s a concentrated area with a diverse crowd of people. Lots of different nationalities and ages. The one thing that unites us is geography. We just needed that new space.” Marina Callahan, the RAA’s current program director, had run special events for the National Park Service and had become friendly with some Continued on page 30

St. Rose of Lima Welcomes Pope in Top Way By Katie McFadden Welcome Pope Francis! The pope may not be stopping in Rockaway during his trip to the east coast of the United States, but St. Rose of Lima Catholic Academy may stick out to him as he flies over Rockaway and into JFK Airport. The school painted a giant welcome sign on the roof of the school building this week. When Pope Francis arrives at John F. Kennedy Airport on Thursday evening, he’ll get a big surprise if he looks down over Rockaway, before landing at the airport. “Santa Rose de Lima <3 Papa Francisco,” the painted tribute reads on top of the building. When the staff of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Academy at Beach 84th Street heard that the pope was coming, they wanted to wel-
come him in a big way. Tuition Secretary Linda Kittle suggested that they do something that the school did back in April 2008 when Pope Benedict XVI came to New York: paint a welcome sign on the roof. “We did this when the last pope came, so as soon as we saw that this pope was coming, we decided that we were going to do it again and try to tweet him to look down when he flies over, because he’s on Twitter,” Principal Theresa Andersen said. “We did it the last time and it was so nice and the kids got so excited,” Kittle said. “Although he’s not coming to our school, we can still welcome him from our school.” The school’s volunteer art teacher, Gina Todd, was recruited to take on the rooftop canvas. “It was Linda’s idea and she said, ‘we

have a project for you.’ I never say no,” Todd said. On Monday, September 21, Kittle and Todd took to the roof of the building and spent the day painting the rooftop with the large message in white paint. “We see all these planes fly overhead and you know they can see the roof,” Principal Andersen said. The school photographed the rooftop display by drone on Tuesday and took to social media site, Twitter, to send the photo to the pope and added a message, saying, “Welcome to New York from St. Rose of Lima Catholic Academy – look for us on your arrival to JFK.” As we go to press, Pope Francis had not responded. While St. Rose of Lima may not be on the schedule for Pope Francis’ quick 40-hour stop in New York, one lucky student from the Rockaway Beach school has the chance to go to him. Brianna Wood, a 9-year-old student at St. Rose will be among five lucky Catholic school children who will get to greet the pope at JFK airport when he arrives at around 5 p.m. on Thursday. St. Rose of Lima is also one of the many Catholic schools in Brooklyn and Queens that received Pope Francis plush dolls from Catholic Telemedia Network
of the DeSales Media Group. Each doll was blessed by Msgr. Kieran Harrington, president of DeSales Media at a ceremony at St. Joseph’s Co-Cathedral, before they were sent to the schools. Each student received a doll and will be able to participate in a contest by taking photos with the doll, while participating in various school activities. “The more creative you are, the better,” Andersen said. ‘This is as creative as you can get,” Todd said, before snapping a photo of the doll standing on the rooftop mural. DeSales Media Group also supplied the schools with a video and other information about the pope. “There might be some kids who don’t know him,” Andersen said, “so these tools will help them learn more.” The staff had kind words to say about Pope Francis and his upcoming visit. “He’s truly someone who walks in the footsteps of Jesus. He’s a humble, humble man who speaks from the heart and truly embodies who Christ was when he walked the earth,” Andersen said. “I think him coming to the US shows exactly what his priorities are. He’s going to the UN here and is meeting the president in Washington D.C. and Continued on page 36

When 30 Days in Rockaway Turns Into 365 By Sarah L. Knapp This July I decided to temporarily move to Rockaway Beach and write “30 Days in the Rockaways,” a blog series to chronicle my daily explorations on and around the Rockaway Peninsula. The impetus behind this was not a special attraction to Rockaway but an interest in challenging myself to fully commit to an outdoor adventure lifestyle within an urban environment. The rules of the challenge were straightforward: each day for 30 consecutive days, I must find and participate in a new outdoor adventure from yoga to kayaking to biking. For me, the months preceding the summer are the most challeng-
ing professionally as I plan June’s annual outdoor recreation festival OutdoorFest. As this time is often defined by long hours indoors, post-festival I felt like it was time to take back my identity as an urban outdoorswoman in the most complete way possible. I suppose I could have done a similar challenge to commit to outdoor living while continuing to reside in Brooklyn. Yet, after six years running through Brooklyn Bridge Park or cycling over the George Washington Bridge on a Saturday morning, downtown Brooklyn just didn’t hold the same excitement (or challenge) as uprooting myself and settling in a completely new place. Along with actual defined adventure like hiking and paddling
part of this personal adventure was discovery of new streets, parks, beaches and bridges. Rockaway is only a few miles from where I’d been living for years but wholly unexplored and unknown to me. When I arrived and started surfing, running on the beaches and boardwalks, and biking to national recreation areas I was exposing myself to an entirely new side of New York City. About two weeks in, I started to drift, more interested in returning to an awesome yoga class or a delicious farm-based dinner than trying something completely new as the challenge outlined. My blog missed three days of “new” activities in favor of me settling into my new routine. For the sake of the blog and my personal challenge to myself, I quickly pulled myself out of this lure of routine and continued to attempt to find something new daily. While I enjoyed this period of discovery, I couldn’t wait for July 31st, when the challenge would be over and I could settle into routine. Yet, after the month ended, I didn’t return to my normal life in Brooklyn, I realized I wanted to give in to this pull of the routine of Rockaway life. Thus, what was supposed to be a 30-day gander in adventur-
ous living proved to be a fortuitous induction into the beauty of living in a community-minded place near the ocean. And last week, two months after the 30-day challenge ended, I signed a yearlong lease, anxious yet excited for the continued adventure that is living in Rockaway. The original blog series “30 Days in the Rockaways” can be found at www.outdoorfest.com/30days. Sarah L. Knapp is a (recent) Queens-based adventure enthusiast, travel writer, and the founder of 10-day outdoor adventure festival OutdoorFest which launched in NYC in the summer of 2014.

Double Dose of Art in Fort Tilden By Katie McFadden The RAA is making a splash with not one, but two new exhibits this month. Save yourself the trip to a fancy art gallery in Manhattan and head to Fort Tilden to check out RAA’s biggest exhibit of the year, ArtSplash, and a brand new addition, Double Vision: Two Photographers- Two Perspectives. There was a steady flow of traffic through the T6 and T7 buildings on Sunday, September 20, as the Rockaway Artists Alliance held the opening receptions for its two new features this month. In its 15th Year, ArtSplash is the RAA’s largest exhibit and features submissions of mixed mediums from artists near and far. The exhibit contains more than 80 pieces from 50 different artists. “This show always has more submissions. The artists can submit anything. There’s no theme and that’s what makes it so special,” exhibit chairperson Renee Radenberg said. “This year is very diverse. We have mixed media, oil paintings, watercolor, sculptures, quilting, photography in different modes and more. Artists from all over submitted work. About half of the artists are from Rockaway, but we have submissions Brooklyn, Pennsylvania and even Florida.” During the opening reception, there was music by John Simonelli and Guy and Karen Nevirs and several of the artists were on hand to show and discuss their pieces. “I’m a lighthouse nut,” photographer Jessica Schulman said as she showed off two of her pieces, both which feature lighthouses on Staten Island and another near Perth Amboy. Sculptor Carmen Frank was eager to show off her two metal

pieces. “A Mother’s Love” features a female figure embracing a child. Frank says she made the piece, which took a year to complete, by dripping hot steel, drop by drop. “I put so much energy into my work. A friend said to me, ‘You should make a flower for yourself,’” which led her to create her floral piece, made from melting and hammering metal. “I have a lot of fun making these,” Frank said. Leonid Goldberg often works with stained glass, but his ArtSplash submissions include two mosaic plates that show off something he’s been experimenting with. “This is my first try with glass mosaics on terra cotta plates,” Goldberg said, but you would never guess it, from the professional and precise details put into the pieces that feature various fruits and another with chess pieces. ArtSplash is the only RAA show where the artists are given awards. Several artists received ribbons in different categories. Best in Show went to Hami Obur Bingol for his modern stereography piece, “Roman Temple & Mosque.” John Huntington’s photo of a “Churning Breezy Point Sunset” earned him the Best Photography award. Best Painting went to Sheila Curran for her piece, “Gathering Mussels.” Jacqueline Amick’s “Fragments of the Tides” won Best Mixed Media. Mary Meade’s painting “Yesterday” won Best Watercolor. Best Watercolor went to Katherine Singh for her untitled piece. “Venetian,” a digital print by Victoria Barber, won Best Design. A metallic print photo, “Red Hook Harbor,” earned Jeff Watts the award for Best Conceptual. Best Sculpture went to Richard Klotz for his welded steel figure. The Viewer’s Choice award

End Of The A Starts On 129th By Lizzie Hurley-Wright The A has made its way “uptown” but this version doesn’t have wheels. You’ve probably seen The End Of The A truck setting up shop at various locations throughout Rockaway but now the boutique is establishing a set location at 437 Beach 129th Street, a spot vacant since Sandy. Owners Beth Waytowich and Tara McKiernan will unveil all the hard work that went into the store at the grand opening on Saturday, September 26 from 11 am to 8 pm. (Beach Bagels is very excited for their new neighbors to be opened and will be graciously providing bagels at the shop, while Beth and Tara know the importance of pairing a mimosa with your bagel!). Tara’s boyfriend Frank Wlazlowski can take just about any recycled material and turn it into a shelf or restore a battered display case. Tara and Frank traveled to different states picking up items from flea markets to decorate the interior of the store as well. In addition to handmade accessories, clothing for the entire family, jewelry and home goods, the boutique is also selling gluten

free, vegan treats like cookies and granola from Balanced Bella creator and another Rockaway local, Jaime Witkowski Hausler. Many have also been curious about the fate of the End of the A truck which made its debut Memorial Day Weekend 2014. Beth and Tara say, rest assured, the community has not seen the last of the “pink” truck. It will roll again from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend. This summer the truck spent most of its time at the Riis Park Beach Bazaar on weekends while work was being done in their store on 129th during the week. Many local businesses have been in contact with End of the A looking to do “pop-ups” in front
of their locations. End of the A is looking forward to collaborating during Summer 2016. Tara reflectively says, “I’m so thankful for the community. They know the importance of a small business and keeping the Rockaway economy vibrant. Other businesses want to share and celebrate your success. This is something you can only get in a small town like Rockaway with a community that is like a family.” Speaking of Rockaway being “a family,” over the course of the winter many loyal followers of the End of the A shop have noticed that something was missing from the truck. One of the owners, Beth, had become very sick with complications due to her battle with cystic fibrosis. Unfortunately, Beth was unable to be a physical presence on the truck and during the construction of their store. Over the summer, Beth was given not only a new lease on the store, but
a new lease on life with a double lung transplant. She says the store is something that has really helped her push through recovery and has given her something to be very excited for. When both Tara and Beth were asked about how their partnership has grown since the opening of the truck, Beth was very eager to answer, “We have both grown to be independent and to be confident in one another’s decisions. When I was sick, I was amazed at how well Tara took charge. I couldn’t and wouldn’t have done a better job on that store. She did extremely well. We work great together and have complete trust in one another.” Beth’s health continues to improve every day and Tara is wonderful partner and friend. The ladies are thrilled to share the store with the community that they love so much. Beth says they were humbled by the response of the soft opening held last weekend and are excited for the official grand opening. Store hours will be flexible during the first few weeks, but as they have in the past, they will rely on social media outlets such as Facebook and Instagram to post their hours. Expected operating hours will be 11 a.m.-7 p.m. daily. The End of The A looks like the beginning of something great!

Sour Grapes Indeed
Dear Editor: Lou Pastina’s article, about vineyards for Rockaway, really got my attention. As an idea, it is something that I would fully endorse. But sadly as a reality, it cannot happen. The seemingly available land down in Edgemere is no longer available. So, very unfortunately for Rockaway, the powers that be are allowing developers to fill every last square inch of City controlled land, with yet more housing. As though we need to add to our already dangerously over populated tiny strip of a shifting, barrier sand bar. However, that area of Edgemere, did at one time support a once thriving vineyard. It wasn’t the kind of formal vineyard, that are found all over the East End of L.I. in The Hamptons or on the North Fork. But it was indeed a vineyard that turned out small batches of pretty decent wines, made from Italian grapes. In the 1920’s my grandparents, new to America, wanted to escape the tyrannical hold, that the Cosa Nostra had over Italian/American business people in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. So they chose to live in Rockaway, and bought some property in Edgemere and also established a branch or two of their shoe repair shops here. In Italy, both of my grandparents, respective families owned vineyards, just as many of the other merchant class Italian families also did. My grandfather, whose name was Saverio Laino, went about planting his grape vines and other assorted fruit trees on any neighbor’s little patch of sandy loam, who would allow him to do so. In the fall he would harvest, press and begin the fermentation process that would eventually lead to his “small batch wines. He would then bottle and store in our wine cellar, that was nothing more than an ancient looking space with HOT & FRESH MAKES US BEST!
beach sand that still contained sea shells and other sandy finds. But this very rustic cellar was able to naturally maintain a nearly constant temperature all year round. So as you can see, a vineyard in Rockaway, would have been a very doable endeavor. And so with very sour grapes, I say, instead of the charm of a vineyard, we ‘ll just be getting more traffic congestion. Cristine Mastros
Diehl Overdoes It Again
Dear Editor: During the school year, it’s a mad dash to my doorstep on Thursdays for The Rockaway Times, and as I lunge for the paper it’s primarily to see if you published the creative writing of my students. Well, I thought that was my primary reason. But, when I continued the lunge after June 26th, I was actually looking for Boyleing Points. I perused the paper all summer long, wondering if you were hiding somewhere in a new spot or suspecting that my copy was a sheet or two short. Disappointed, I realized how much I had enjoyed Boyleing Points. Scanning The Rockaway Times each week, I found many other enjoyable features and columns like Facts You Probably Don’t Need To Know; Recipe Swap, and This Week In History- but, my search for Boyleing Points continued. Kevin, I know that you shy away from inordinate praise, so I’m not going to say your column is a witty and nostalgic, out-of-the-box piece which creates a sense of intimacy or friendship between reader and writer. I’ll just say I celebrated the return of Boyleing Points with friends and family this past Thursday. There’s nothing like it in any other newspaper. Welcome Back! Take a Break By Paulette Mancuso Pretty much every day I have off from work I try to really limit my time on the computer, texting and on the phone. I think there is great benefit in checking out from the electronic world for a bit and just be with yourself, your family, friends, people around you and see what happens. We are so so prodded by incoming texts, emails, calls – we think it is necessary to answer or respond right away, thereby having all of those on the other end managing our time and space. Of course the instant communication we have nowadays is valuable in times of emergency, for keeping track of children, but there is value in stopping it all. Our minds, often so engaged by the “incoming,” rarely have the opportunity to be inspired, be creative, think differently, just stopping and letting thoughts come in and out, let feelings arise, being calm and listening to the mind, the heart (emotions) and the physical body. “Being” in that space for a time could be enlightening. Often we work out problems, or suddenly an answer comes that we’ve been seeking. When we’re constantly bombarded by the phone, texts, email, etc., there is no time to stop and think and feel and be peaceful. Constantly checking the phone for texts and emails becomes a habit. Ask yourself: how far
Safety and the DIYer
can your phone be from you at any given time? Do you ever put it on silent? Do you ever leave it at home? Making the choice to receive “incoming” is far better than being at the mercy of whoever is at the other end. Take control of your electronic devices. Don’t allow them to rule you. Think – feel – be – outside of the electronics realm every once in a while knowing that it will all be there when you get back to it. Take note of how you feel after a little while– not right away because there may be a sense of panic! You may find that you feel a certain inner centeredness – a feeling inside – rather than constant outward communication. Perhaps a certain peace arises from this feeling of being within for a time thinking, feeling, being. Building that foundation within that you can fall back on whenever you need it. Painting that inner beautiful landscape that you can fall back on whenever you need it. Displaying that inner smile on your face and in your eyes giving good feelings to those around you. Take the time to stop all of the outside stimulation, go within, spend quality time with friends and family and allow that inner smile to radiate. No hurrying. All we have is time. When you can, choose how you experience time. May you be happy, may you be free, may you let go of things that do not serve you, may you have inner peace.

your work area is clear of debris (a little debris can cause a piece of wood to move while cutting or a ladder to slip). Always wear safety glasses. When working with power tools, always keep loose clothing tucked in or even use a little tape around sleeves. Gloves are great, but not for everything (sometimes you need a firmer grip on a tool than gloves will allow). Use face masks (contractors get accustomed to breathing in a lot of things that would get the average person sick), always use earplugs or protection (a circular saw operates at about 115 decibels. Even a lawnmower runs at about 110 which can be damaging after about 20 minutes) and always make sure ladders have firm footing before getting on them. A trip to the doctor or hospital can cost a lot more than hiring someone for the job, so if you’re going to do it yourself, be sure to do it safely. If you have any questions about safety on a project you’re working on, you can always Google the project with the word “safely” (installing shelves safely) or email me and I will do my best to answer your questions. So keep those DIY projects going, but keep them safe. Tell me what you would like to read about in future DIYer articles, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail.com

STOKED FOR SUCCESS IN 100TH PRECINCT ANNOUNCES ONLINE FORUM ROCKAWAY BEACH By Desiree Melendez What drives you? What gets you stoked? Is it the anticipation of a new phone being released, a movie premiere, or the next late night party? City life seems to be driven around consumption, but for so many of us here in Rockaway, it’s a die-hard commitment to the ocean. There’s no feeling more empowering than riding down the face of a wave, accomplishing something you’ve never done before, and realizing your potential is limitless. That’s why STOKED Mentoring is bringing young adults from all over the city to surf in Rockaway. STOKED is an organization that believes action sports can teach teens essential skills for success. As income inequality continues to widen the opportunity gap, STOKED is determined to change the fact that a child’s family income is now the greatest predictor of how successful that child will be as an adult. STOKED pairs professionals who are passionate about action sports with an underserved community of youth. Most importantly, it creates a nurturing environment where kids learn to believe in themselves despite the challenges they face. Beach 67th Street is a surf break punctuated by brightly colored tents and umbrellas that mark the many surf schools in the area. Weaving my way through the businesses, I arrived at a unique camp advertising nothing other than the simple yet powerful declaration, STOKED. Our program manager, Hannah Tall, had a lot in store for us. We all introduced ourselves by sharing one thing we’ve learned from the STOKED community. “Try new things. “Don’t let your fear stop you. “How to be more social. Those were just a few of the answers that resounded from the overwhelmingly positive atmosphere. The sparkle of a small set in the distance rolled under the lid of my baseball cap into my periphery. But before we could head into the surf, it was time to pay for our waves. Hannah called a boy into the circle and announced, “Harry wants to go to the Street League Skateboarding Competition. So,
how are you going to earn your ticket and pay for your waves today, Harry? I was impressed when he spoke up to say he was going to stand up on his board at least once to earn a spot. I immediately recognized the genius of setting small but meaningful goals as a crucial element to success in surfing and in life. Harry then joined the rest of us in picking up trash to pay for our waves, just because it was the right thing to do. One spotless beach later and it was time for land practice before jumping in the water. “It’s such a great opportunity for me to get to do things like this for free. The words my mentee nonchalantly shared caught me off guard. There was something simultaneously so right and so wrong about them. Surf lessons typically range from $65-$100 for around a 90-minute to a 2-hour session. Yet, thanks to STOKED, a new opportunity emerged for my mentee. Not only did she stand up on her very first wave, she succeeded at paddling into her own. By the end of the two-hours, she had achieved what takes some students months. “How did you find out about STOKED? My mentee replied, “I saw a poster at school of someone snowboarding and it said ‘this could be you.’ STOKED believes in changing kid’s perspectives. It’s a four-year program that in addition to surfing includes snowboarding sessions, skating curriculum where kids also learn to build their own skateboards, and more. At the closing ceremony Harry proclaimed, “I stood up on 13 waves! The circle exploded with kudos. “I want to give kudos to Jasper for having patience. “Thank you Hannah for always feeding me. “Congratulations Grace on starting college. One of the volunteers summed it up nicely, “I haven’t seen that many smiles in a long time! It may mean the end of summer but I can’t wait to see the same kids continue to succeed at snowboarding and in the classroom, the way they killed it on the beach that day. What are you stoked for? To get involved, visit www.stoked. org.

Between the Bridges in Broad Channel By Peter J. Mahon
Peter Principle At Work Shortly after Sandy’s storm surge, which left Rob McCarthy’s home on West 12th Road uninhabitable, the line to the water meter on the property froze and burst. The broken line was cut and capped that same day by a helpful neighbor, which eliminated the serious water waste, but unfortunately, over the next several years, Rob continually received quarterly water bills from DEP estimating his usage bill at $250 despite the fact that his property’s water usage was zero! Repeated requests by Rob to the DEP to meet with him at the property in order to sort out this billing problem went unheeded until only last week
when a DEP staff member finally arrived on the block to survey the problem. The DEP representative listened attentively to Rob’s factual explanation as to what had been transpiring for the past several years with his “quarterly $250 estimated bill,” and after surveying the property, called his supervisor and explained that this was a longstanding Sandy related issue and requested guidance as to how to proceed. Unfortunately, that was when this entire issue took a very unexpected detour into the Twilight Zone. The DEP supervisor’s sole response to his field technician was that “Sandy happened three years ago….” fol-
lowed by explicit directions to issue a violation to the property owner for an “unauthorized disconnect from the water meter.” DEP’s response to this homeowner’s problem brings to mind the words of Laurence J. Peter, author of the Peter Principle who stated...“Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it.” Personally, I go with the second option! On Sunday, September 13, members of the Broad Channel VFW PrinceWynn Post #260 family woke up early, packed several cars with food and other supplies and then headed out to St. Albans Hospital to provide a BBQ and other activities for the disabled veterans who are residents at the hospital. Today, because less than one percent of our population serves in the military, too many of us are not attuned to the everyday needs of our nation’s veterans. Thankfully, our small town of Broad Channel has long been a community possessed with a much greater concern for and understanding of the sacrifices made by service members and their families who are members of our families, our neighbors, our friends, our fellow citizens. The men and women of our local VFW are a shining example of that concern and understanding. Speaking of the VFW, stop by the Broad Channel VFW Flea Market this weekend (Sat and Sun) between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and explore
The Rockaway Times the many tables filled with all manner of wonderful and eclectic items you never knew you needed! Don’t forget this coming Sunday evening (September 27) our town will have a front row seat to a rare supermoon lunar eclipse combo. The last time we got to experience such a phenomenon was in 1982 and this one will be clearly visible from our area in Broad Channel providing it is not a cloudy night. This rare celestial event will start right around the time of Sunday evening’s 8:30 p.m. high tide. Keep in mind that if you miss this one, you won’t get another chance until 2033! Broad Channel – Why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Facts You Probably Don’t Need (Special correspondent Sean McVeigh has returned to college but his fact finding continues. When taking a break from his studies he scours the internet for facts you might find interesting. We don’t spend time verifying said facts). ☛☛☛
☛It is illegal in many countries to perform surgical procedures on an octopus without anesthesia due to their intelligence. ☛Mark Haub, a professor at Kansas State University, went on a “convenience store diet,” which mainly consisted of Twinkies, Oreos, and Doritos to demonstrate that counting calories is what matter most in weight loss, not the nutritional value of the food. He lost 27 pounds in only 2 months. ☛City birds have learned to line their nests with cigarette butts in order to ward off parasites, as burnt nicotine works as an insecticide to ward off mites, lice, and fleas. ☛In 2005 the Italian Prime Minister, Berlusconi, insulted Finnish cuisine and joked that Finns ate “marinated reindeer.” In 2008, Finland won an international pizza contest, beating Italy. The name of the winning pizza was “Pizza Berlusconi,” which was made of smoked reindeer. ☛Student loans have hit a record high of $12 trillion in the United States. ☛During the 2003 invasion of Iraq, British sniper Matt Hughes managed to kill an enemy with
a half-mile sniper shot, during which the bullet curved 56 feet in the air before hitting the target. He aimed the shot 56 feet to the left and 38 feet high from the target. ☛The doctor who claimed that there was a link between autism and vaccines had his medical license removed when he was found to have fabricated evidence. ☛When Samuel Adams received a female slave as a wedding gift, he insisted that “a slave cannot live in my house; if she comes she must be free.” He was able to free her after years of writing emancipation papers, and treated her as an equal family member throughout that time. ☛Dumping golf balls into the sea is outlawed because the plastic does not break down. A professor at the University of Maine used ground up lobster shells and other materials to develop biodegradable golf balls. These balls are intended for use on cruise ships or driving ranges by the ocean. ☛Pimps wear lots of gold jewelry bought at pawn shops to “repawn” for bail money since cash is confiscated upon arrest but jewelry is not.

With the third anniversary of Sandy just ahead it appears some are putting the event well behind them, if real estate prices are any gauge. Buyers have plunked down a cool $3 million ($3,075,000) for an oceanfront home on Beach 135th Street. The house at 126 Beach 135th, listed for $3.2 million by Rockaway Properties, was refurbished after Sandy. It was listed for sale in March and went into contract in July. The all brick home has five bedrooms and an in-ground pool. Lisa Jackson, owner of Rocka-
way Properties, said, “Superstorm Sandy did not have lasting effects on the real estate market like many long time residents in Rockaway feared it might. The Peninsula has built back and is becoming even stronger than before. The real estate market has been steadily increasing in value and there are no limits to where we can go from here. Rockaway Properties has sold over 180 properties since the storm and I can say with confidence, we are back! Currently, a vacant oceanfront lot has an asking price of $1,850.000.

The Core Four
KENNEDY'S "UFFET "RUNCH %VERY 3UNDAY from 11:30 to 2:00.

Earlier this summer when I heard rumors about a Coney Island-style mermaid parade along the Rockaway Beach boardwalk, called “Poseidon’s Parade,” I thought to myself, that would be pretty cool! I always loved watching the Mermaid Parade over in Coney Island, where there is always a real magic that is felt during the event. Last week I wrote that I would do a better job in putting names to the great events that occur on our little slice of heaven. Well here is my shout out to four incredible women, forever to be known as “The Core Four” of Rockaway Poseidon Parade! Together these women put together, by far, one of the most enjoyable and memorable days I’ve ever had in all my days on the Rockaway peninsula. I know that anyone who participated, or was a spectator, will agree that Katie Honan, Casey Brouder, Dolores Orr and Portia Dyrenforth, have collectively created for us an instant Rockaway tradition that will surely be with us for decades to come! I have to admit that last Saturday morning as we dragged our big Beach 92nd Street “Riders of the Storm” float up the boardwalk along with my friend Ian to the starting line of the parade route, I didn’t really know what to expect.
I honestly thought that there would be a few floats and a bunch of brave people who just wanted to have a fun time prancing down the boardwalk as mermaids and Poseidon or just a fantasy of sea creatures with a few people on the boardwalk wondering what the heck was going on. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect cheering crowds, in some places 10 deep, along the entire length of the parade route from Beach 106th to Beach 94th. The energy by the people along the boardwalk of Rockaway Beach was truly electric, with all of Rockaway having one huge smile! The NY Yankees “core four” brought Yankee fans many parades over the years and now our very own Rockaway Core Four have brought us our own World Seriesstyle Rockaway Poseidon’s Parade! Poseidon would be proud!!! While up here on my soapbox, here is another shout out to my sister Deirdre O’Donoghue, who along with Ian Macaulay and other friends, helped make the Beach 92nd Street “Riders of the Storm” float come alive! Of course a big thanks to our lead mermaid Kat Raynor and our amazing Poseidon Chris Romulo of CROM. And a super special mention to Mia and her crew of mini mermaids - Great job guys!!!

DOC By Peter Galvin, MD
By Peter Galvin, MD Melanoma is a significant public health concern. Ever year 75,000 people are diagnosed with it and 10,000 die from it. The cause of melanoma is known, namely DNA damage caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVA) from the sun or other sources like tanning beds. Damage from UVA is cumulative, meaning that it often takes years of exposure to cause skin cancer. Prevention is easy – avoidance of both direct and indirect sunlight and the use of sunscreens. In 2012 the FDA determined that sunscreens that blocked UVA could be marketed as reducing the risk of skin cancer, provided that the sun protection factor (SPF) was 15 or higher. Sunscreens with an SPF of lower than 15 may prevent a sunburn but do not prevent skin cancer development. Most sunscreens marketed in the USA contain oxybenzone or avobenzone. Since 1999 the FDA has approved only one additional UVA blocker – ecamsule. Recently the FDA failed to approve eight new sunscreen ingredients, stating that more data was required. In Europe, sunscreens are regulated as cosmetics. Last year the FDA approved 41 new prescription products, but when it comes to over-the-counter (OTC) products the FDA moves much slower. OTC products are usually approved under the standard of “generally recognized as safe and effective.” Also, OTC products require economic analysis plus approval by the Department of Health and Human Services and the White House Office of Management and Budget. All this governmental red tape means that new OTC products get

Government Should Move On Skin Care to the market much more slowly than prescription products, which seems almost counter-intuitive. Topical products like sunscreens are rarely, if ever, harmful and one would think that a product deemed “generally safe and effective” should be approved quickly, particularly if it is an improvement over what is currently available. Unfortunately that is not the case.
Many of the new sunscreen products awaiting government approval are improvements over current products. The problem with current sunscreens is that they require frequent re-application. They wash off the skin easily with sweat or immersion in water. Plus sunscreens with SPF lower that 15 are still sold and many buyers are not aware that they offer no protection against skin cancer. The days of suntan lotions (remember the Coppertone ad?) and a “healthy” tan are gone forever and skin cancer rates including melanoma are skyrocketing. The government needs to get off its duff and approve new products,
Page 27 remove the red tape or change the regulation of OTC skin products to the European model. Meanwhile stay in the shade and apply and re-apply your sunscreen. As skin damage is cumulative, this is especially important for children. Lastly, be aware that darker skin tone does not protect a person’s skin from sun damage and skin cancer. Diary Of A Fat Man: 202 Virtual High Fives! I posted before and after pictures on Facebook last week when I hit 47 pounds lost and the 202 likes and comments I received make it so much easier to keep this going and lose another 47 pounds! How come? Reams of studies prove that support from other people can keep you motivated to lose weight. There is a growing body of evidence showing that people who make a public commitment (tell their friends and family) are much more likely to follow through with their goals.
The support from friends is a great help but so too is the embarrassment of failing in front if of them. Start telling people about your weight loss efforts and make Facebook or Twitter statuses telling everyone about your goals. If you’re feeling extra confident and want to up the stakes, use the website StickK, created by a professor of economics at Yale. StickK allows you design a goal, input your bank account details and choose a friend to hold you financially accountable to your progress. Either you’ll lose weight or your

And while an overload of selfies may evoke an eye roll, when it comes to achieving your weight loss goals, you shouldn’t dismiss the power of social media so quickly. “These tools are extremely helpful for not only tracking purposes, but for accountability as well, said John Rowley, a certified personal trainer, best-selling author and director of wellness for the International Sports Sciences Association. “Part of losing weight and keeping it off is monitoring yourself after you reach your goals so that you can nip any weight gain in the bud. Posting or journaling your stats on a regular basis can keep you from ignoring weight gain and doing something about it. Luckily I haven’t had too many plateaus or gains over these past three-plus months, but if I did, you know I would be open with you! The use of social sharing is great. Our networks serve as a soundboard for positive encouragement and body acceptance. These core elements are simple for us to understand, but when used strategically, can have a profound effect on goal achievement. According to the ACE Health Coach Manual, “Social support from family and friends is an important predictor of physical-activity behavior. It is difficult for an individual to maintain a lifestyle-modification program if he or she does not have support at home or at work. The use of online social media broadens this concept and enables users to reach hundreds of friends instantaneously. It takes the idea of making yourself accountable to a friend by scheduling a morning walk and multiplies
it a hundredfold. It’s about accountability. I have friends who post daily like I do and I make a point of ‘liking’ any fitness-related post. It’s a simple way of acknowledging their efforts. It’s a “virtual high five. Sharing your successes publicly may sound a bit narcissistic, (God knows, I have been accused of that a few times in my life.... like a few times every day.) But don’t let that stop you. There’s a good reason I boast about my achievements. A recent weight loss research study showed people who posted progress photos documenting their weight loss lost 1.2 pounds per week, compared to 0.27 pounds lost when they didn’t use the sharing platform. Strong social circles are seen as very effective in combatting obesity. You now have an answer for your friends who say you are wasting your time on Facebook. You know...the ones that always make fun of you and claim they would never be part of sharing nonsense! So, if any of you readers want to assist me in my journey, please send me a friend request on Facebook at Bruce Bernfeld. It would be a great help and I can use any High Five I can get!! (BTW, David Dworetsky of Belle Harbor knew that 84 percent of the weight you lose leaves your body in the carbon dioxide you exhale when breathing!!)

Scrawl Back To Us:
Fun Event Makes Rockaway Return By Dylan Watton
“I developed the Scrawl for Myrtle Avenue in Brooklyn when it was just starting to grow and add more businesses (shops, bars, restaurants) much like Rockaway is doing lately,” Power said via email. “As a friend and patron of many of the business-
es old and new I felt with the varying sizes and clientele of the establishments on Myrtle it would be better to crowd source and create a chooseyour-own-adventure bar/restaurant crawl.” The goal, in Power’s eyes, was to show locals and visitors what the new establishments were offering to the area in a fun and inventive method that lasted all day long. “Now we are doing that in Rockaway in hopes of proving to outsiders that Rockaway is still open after Labor Day and to let the locals know how much is still going on all year long while also rewarding them with a day of awesome deals and a chance to win prizes,” he added. See http://maxpowerscrawl. com/ for more info.

of the administrators at Gateway and Fort Tilden. “They had these two buildings, called T6 and T7, which were in shambles,” she recalled. “We were told that it would require a lot of grunt-work to rebuild them but if we could do it, the buildings were ours. It was the quickest ‘yes’ I ever said.” Rawling put together a few laborers who could help refurbish the former army buildings, and work could begin to get done. But first, funding was needed. “There were always a lot of sports programs in Rockaway, but if you weren’t interested in sports there was nothing for kids like my daughter to do,” Chris Jorge said. Jorge’s prior experiences had led her to become familiar with the administrative aspects of forming an organization. “In order for us to start receiving state and federal funds, we needed a 501(c)(3) to make us a nonprofit,” Rawling said. “Youth and kids have always been very important as far as nurturing the kids to come up and have creative, positive outlets and a program that was not competitive,” Jorge added. An effective education program would go miles in helping the RAA receive the nonprofit certification, so as her 1996 Mitsubishi was getting its tires replaced, Jorge wrote the outline for what became kidsmART, the RAA’s free after-school program based on the principles of kindness, imagination, dependability, sensitivity, motivation, acceptance, respect and tolerance. “KidsmART is an addition to community that is very beneficial,” Callahan said. “It bridges both ends of the community. We offer homework assistance and STEM. We have shows that the kids participate in. We’ve built incredible relationships with the schools, the kids and the families. Many of the families really need the services we provide.” Through kidsmART, Jorge was able to secure the first contracts for the RAA, including ones from the Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation, the Department of Youth
and Community Development, the Department of Education. With funding and certification secured, the RAA found a permanent home at Fort Tilden to hold exhibitions, classes, and more, and through kidsmART found a way to easily connect youth and artists at both ends of the peninsula (the program runs out of both PS114 and PS104). Esther Grillo started the RAA Apprenticeship Program, exposing young artists to “the profession of art. Mentoring is so important, you can see the art being transferred to real life. What I showed them was the reality of the hard work and the setbacks they may face,” Grillo said. Following the crash of Flight 587 in Belle Harbor, Jorge helped start an art therapy program in PS114. Throughout the 2000s, through the leadership of Rawling, Callahan, and the many other board members, the RAA expanded their partnerships to renowned museums such as MOMA, the Met, and the Museum of Natural History, as well as growing their exhibitions in scope and bringing in artists from all around the world to exhibit and teach in Rockaway, including Patti Smith and Klaus Biesenbach.
In October 2012, Hurricane Sandy hit Rockaway, destroying much of the community. The RAA was not spared. “At Fort Tilden our T-7 gallery and T-149 education building suffered frozen burst pipes,” current RAA president Dan Guarino said. “Supplies froze. Our big heating/ventilation units for T-7 and the T-6 gallery were hit with salt water. Our T-6 gallery was flooded. The exhibition that was up was saved, but the walls had to [be] chopped out to prevent mold from growing. When Fort Tilden was closed, we lost our home. At the time we didn’t know for how long.” Marina added, “We had to shut down the building from October until the next June. But thankfully our program at PS104 stayed open.” Sandy indeed set the organization back significantly and like the rest of Rockaway

it is still recovering from the storm. But there was a silver lining to it. “In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, there was nothing that said we had to put things back exactly as they were. This was, and still is, our opportunity to put our imagination and hard work into building RAA back bigger and better than it’s ever been.” Twenty years after its incorporation, the RAA continues to be a gateway to art and opportunity for Rockaway’s youth, artists, and more. On October 10, they will be holding their 20th Anniversary Gala at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club. Tickets can be purchased on their website, www.rockawayartistsalliance.org. For many of the people instrumental in the formation and success of the RAA, the anniversary serves as a reminder of what the group means to Rockaway and what they look for in the future. “RAA has been growing and evolving for 20 years,” Guarino said. “It has always been becoming more. I see us continuing to support and promote all the arts in Rockaway, both homegrown native talent and all the new artists coming to the peninsula. I see us partnering with others in new ways to take the arts in new directions. We did this with this summer’s peninsula wide arts festival, Rockaway ArtWave.” Callahan spoke on the impact of kidsmART, saying that it created “an emotional intelligence that is paramount and very keen” in Rockaway’s youth. “We really put Rockaway on the map as a creative destination,” Rawling said. “We broke that barrier and we took the art to the street.”
Turkey Cutlets until cooked through, turning once (about 2-3 minutes per side). Remove the cutlets from the pan and place on a platter. Cover with aluminum foil to keep warm. Add the onions to the skillet and cook for about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for one more minute. Deglaze the pan with the balsamic vinegar, scraping up all the bits from the bottom of the pan. Add the broth, apples, and thyme. Reduce the heat to low and cover. Simmer until apples are tender, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the skillet from the heat and add arugula. Toss to coat the arugula with the balsamic apple mixture. Place the cutlets on top of the arugula. Squeeze lemon on top and serve.

By Emil R. Lucev, Sr. & Daughter, Katie Lucev It was a sad day in 1987 when the wrecker ball visited the old Playland area in Rockaway Beach. Rockaway’s Famous Amusement Park, only 85 years old, was demolished and the land cleared for housing. The area between Bch. 97th Street and Bch. 99th Street, from Rockaway Beach Boulevard to the Shorefront Parkway was affected. The memory of the Amusement Park will remain in the hearts of many, BUT one place of entertainment in the Playland area stood above the rest. John O’Gara’s Bar & Grill on Bch. 98th Street across from Playland supplied dining & dancing…and the Greatest Show on the Rockaway Peninsula. It was The Elvis Presley Impersonation and show by Eddy Williamson & the Second Effort Band. The bar was always packed for the great show. You had to arrive early to get a table otherwise it was standing room only! Eddy’s impersonation of the KING was remarkable to say the least and

For Your Home, Business, Condo, Coop the band played popular songs and requests which kept the crowd hopping. I can still hear the echoes of the song “Rockaway” and the other favorite which was called “Under the Boardwalk”. The most called for song during the Elvis Show was the popular, “My Way”. The show closed with the famous “Trilogy Set”, with the dramatic fog on stage. I recall the unforgettable comedy performance of songs by “Teen-Angel” running out on the floor with the steering wheel around his neck. We have two pictures appearing today. The first is one of the last pictures of the O’Gara building in that faithful year of 1987. The second is of John O’Gara and is sister Farish who is smiling because the photo was taken at a happier time.

Ideas for
State Senator Joe Addabbo on the Record By Rick Horan
This is the third in a series of responses by elected officials or agency heads on important transportation issues in Rockaway and New York City. Here are Senator Joe Addabbo’s opinions on…
Marshal Stephen W. Biegel 109 W. 38th Street, Suite 200 New York, NY 10018 Office: (212) MARSHAL (627-7425) Fax: (212) 398-2000 NYC@marshalbiegel.com www.NewYorkCityMarshal.com
1. Select Bus Service (SBS) on Woodhaven Blvd and Cross Bay Blvd. JA: While I agree we need to improve bus service throughout Rockaway and the SBS plan addresses that issue, I am against the current proposal selected by the NYC DOT and have been encouraging the agency to hear the concerns of my constituents and re-evaluate the proposal. When working on such a long term SBS plan, the interests of the core five categories or factors, as I have referred to them, namely – bus riders, car drivers, pedestrians, local businesses and the side streets of the surrounding community must be considered. RH: I’ve heard you tell the MTA / DOT that they will build SBS and leave while we will have to live with the ramifications for a long, long time. Good point! 2. QueensRail (Old Rockaway Beach Line). JA: I understand that reactivating the Old Rockaway Beach Line would improve train service in Rockaway. Unfortunately, after numerous meetings, conversations and negotiations with the MTA, including its Chairman and CEO, Tom Prendergast, to my belief, the MTA has no interest in ever taking measures to open the line. Therefore when it comes to improving transportation in Rockaway, I have diverted the majority of my attention to those impacts that are more attainable and immediate, like a permanent, full-time ferry service. RH: Although not high on your priority list, can advocates for QueensRail count on you as a supporter? JA:. Until even a remote possibility exists for the QueensRail, I have not really examined the full pros and cons of its impact. RH: Given your opinion that QueensRail would improve train service in Rockaway I hope you will decide to fight for this im-
portant transportation option, after all, nothing important is ever easy. 3. Vision Zero and 25 MPH City Speed limit JA: I believe when government takes steps to make our roadways safer, it’s a step in the right direction. I approved the lower speed limit in the vicinity of our schools and will consider future proposals of Vision Zero. RH: Did you approve the lower speed limit for the entire City? JA: Yes, I voted for it. 4. Traffic Calming (removing lanes, etc.) JA: Like most proposals or changes to address traffic conditions, such as removing lanes, it has been my experience when dealing with this issue in the past that we must look at not only the immediate area being changed, but the surrounding blocks and lanes. I once again refer to the core five factors or categories I mentioned earlier and that their interests be considered. RH: Do you think that all the lane reductions Rockaway has seen in recent years has helped or hurt transportation? JA: All lane reductions, such as those on Shorefront and the Freeway in the past, must consider both short and long term ramifications. While there were constituent concerns at the time of the lane changes, the vast majority of residents have grown accustomed to the alterations. RH: Maybe some of us. 5. The use of Speed Cameras in unmarked School Zones JA: When voting on school zone speed cameras in Albany, I urged that said cameras must come with signage notifying the motorists. Since signage was negotiated as part of the initial legislation, I will continue to advocate for the notification. RH: Is signage accompanying speed cameras required by the legislation you voted for? JA: According to the legislative language I voted on, signage is required and it’s my understanding the city will eventually install such notification. RH: I think Joe is right and the DOT has been acting illegally with Continued on page 34

putting speed cameras in unmarked school zones. Hmmm… 6. Rockaway Ferry – how can we prevent this from being a political football? JA: Since my days in the City Council, when I funded a Rockaway ferry during harsh fiscal times in the city, I have been an ardent supporter of a permanent, sevenday ferry in Rockaway. I believe that we should have a ferry before its scheduled appearance in 2017 and will continue to impress upon the Mayor and his administration the need for an earlier start date. It should not have to become a political football when all that is needed are the facts as to why a ferry in Rockaway is rationally long overdue. 7. Cross Bay Bridge Tolls – Why are they still there? JA: The Cross Bay Bridge tolls are still unfairly in existence because of the MTA’s desire for money. I will continue to advocate for the tolls’ total removal or to be minimally eliminated from Labor Day to Memorial Day in order to better relieve the unacceptable burden to those who want to work, do business or enjoy amenities in the Rockaways. 8. Proposed East River Crossing Tolls and Congestion Pricing in NYC JA: In the past I have voted against the proposal to create tolls on the East River crossings and Congestion Pricing. I will continue to oppose these ill-conceived plans.

9. Does the Mayor have too much power regarding transportation policy and funding? JA: I have been a supporter of taking more transportation authority and operations away from the MTA and making it more a part of the city’s jurisdiction, in order to create a more transparent and accountable service for my constituents. RH: Do you really feel that MTA should follow the current DOT model relative to accountability and transparency? JA: I believe that when an entity provides such a critical public service, using governmen-
tal funds, like the MTA does, it should be held to the highest standard of accountability and transparency. RH: Agreed, but certainly it must be held to higher standards than the DOT! 10. How should the MTA capital budget gap be closed? JA: I have stated in the past that in order to address the MTA capital budget deficiency and because it provides a critical public service, the agency itself must prove to the government, of which it seeks additional monies, and more importantly its riders, which it seeks to continually hurt by raising fares, that it has done all it can to address its extremely large overhead costs and establish a more efficient MTA. The agency should first explain its reluctance to sell certain assets or to implement corporate sponsorships for station and other improvements. When all necessary internal changes and measures have been completed, then the MTA can negotiate funding from the different levels of government. 11. What transportation improvement for Rockaway are you most proud of? JA: As mentioned, I was extremely proud to have worked on and provided a ferry operation in Rockaway during my tenure in the City Council. 12. What is your big idea to improve Rockaway transportation going forward? JA: Because of Rockaway’s unique geographic location, I will continue to strongly advocate for a permanent, full-time ferry, working towards multiple ferries from multiple docks throughout the peninsula. The initial ferry is immediately attainable and would credibly improve transportation upon its implementation. I am always available to further discuss my ideas for improving transportation in Rockaway with my constituents. Thank you Joe! Next week we will hear from the DOT, maybe. 18 Groups Get Pipeline Grants Williams, the company behind the Rockaway Lateral Project, or the Rockaway Pipeline, recently announced the recipients of the Rockaway Community Grant Program, awarding more than $114,000 to 18 organizations that reside in and/or provide services to the Rockaway area. Williams awarded more than $120,000 last fall, bringing the total announced awards to $460,000 since 2014. The mission of the Williams Rockaway Community Grant Program is to assist in the development of projects that directly benefit communities surrounding Williams’ Rockaway Delivery Lateral pipeline, which was placed into service earlier this year. Grants up to $15,000 per funding cycle are awarded based on community need and can be used to provide environmental benefit or economic development, or to support emergency services, youth and senior programs, or education programs. Community organizations can complete and submit the electronic application found online at www.williams.com/rockawaygrant.

Iconic Brand Files For Bankruptcy Yep, completely greedy and mismanaged Quiksilver has filed for bankruptcy! “After careful consideration, we have taken this difficult but necessary step to secure a bright future for Quiksilver, Pierre Agnes, Quiksilver’s chief executive, told the Wall Street Journal. After inching their way into markets they didn’t really understand and buying up the companies that did know the market, like Dynastar in the skiing/snowboard market, only to sell it for half of what they bought it for, has now completely crippled the brand. Earlier this week it was trading below 50 cents, and was sus-
pended from the New York Stock Exchange. Far Rock Teen Finds Success At National Pageant By Dylan Watton Toni Edwards thought the letter was a scam. Emblazoned with a blue crown, with big red block letters reading “NAM” below it, she thought it was sent to her house by accident. Surely, the National American Miss pageant wouldn’t be looking for an ordinary girl from Far Rockaway. But indeed they were, and Edwards decided to attend the auditions, which the letter invited her to. “They wanted to make sure that I was a good student,” Edwards, 18, said. “They also asked me questions like ‘If you were you President what issues would you focus on’ and ‘Who do you look up to in your life?’ After that, they called me two weeks later and told me that I was invited back for the state finals!” Edwards, who is a senior at Frederick Douglass Academy at the former Far Rockaway High School campus, began gathering sponsors to raise funds for the two competitions that she would be participating in at the pageant— the casual wear modeling portion and the spokesmodel portion. This included going to places like her dentist and other local businesses,
as well as support from her best friends and peers in her school. Her father living in the Cayman Islands (where Edwards also lived for some time) also raised money in his home country and sent it up to his daughter. National America Miss differs from other pageants in that it is not as centered on the “beauty” aspect of the events. “There were no bathing suit parts and there weren’t any girls wearing heavy makeup,” Edwards said. Edwards was supposed to take part in the acting portion but had a change of heart at the last minute. “I was in my hotel room and I couldn’t remember any of my lines!” she ex-
plained. “I was able to act it really good in practice but when I woke up I just forgot them. So I did the casual wear instead.” The competition took place on Saturday, August 22 and Sunday, August 23 at the Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Edwards came with several members of her family. “We all stayed in the same room because we couldn’t afford to get more than one,” she explained. Immediately upon arriving, Edwards felt out of place. “A lot of the other contestants said things about Far Rockaway, that they didn’t expect a girl from there to be at the competition,” Edwards said. Some of the pageant judges also made remarks about Edwards’ hometown. “One said ‘You’re very respectable for a female from Far Rockaway,’” Edwards said. Despite the perceptions about Edwards and Far Rockaway, she persevered and sought to change the opinions that had been expressed. Early Sunday morning, Edwards had to jump into her spokesmodel segment of the show. “We did a class forum on mental issues, so I decided to speak about that,” Edwards said. “I suffer from anxiety myself, and last year I was diagnosed with depression and bipolar disorder. We have to adjust as a society to help and understand people with these issues.” Later in the day, Edwards participated in
the casual wear portion. “I wore a summer flower dress with white tennis sneakers,” Edwards said. In both of the segments Edwards took part in, she won first runnerup. “I wanted to cry!” she said. “I wasn’t expecting it. There were a lot of girls there who have been doing things like this their entire lives. They have coaches to help train them. So when they called me my heart just started thumping.” As first runner-up, Edwards has been invited to the National American Miss national finals in California over Thanksgiving weekend, receiving a “golden ticket” in addition to two trophies for her efforts. “I’m in the middle of getting sponsorships for that as well,” Edwards said. Potential sponsors interested in contacting Edwards can email her at miss_toni97@aol.com. Edwards views her experience over the summer as extremely positive. “My confidence boost is extremely high,” she said. “No matter how many people would tell me I was beautiful I wouldn’t believe them. I don’t realize but my mom says my posture has improved, too. I’m able to give speeches in front of my class without my palms sweating and or my heart beating.” Her past fears and doubts about attending the pageant are long since gone. “I walked away with so much confidence, empowerment and the drive to make more changes.”

New Season Begins Breezy Point Bowling League The Breezy Point Bowling League opened up the 2015-16 season on Saturday September 12th occupying all 34 lanes at Strike Ten Lanes on Strickland Avenue in Mill Basin. Steve Mastrandrea (238-216181; 635 series) and John Perrota (218-176) provided the fire power for “Got Balls?” to overcome a big push by Jimmy Ryan (199-179) and Katie Casale (178 game, 434
series) of “Spare Parts” and walk away with a 5-2 win. “Roxbury Bookmarks” used Dan Reid’s 201 to grab a 5-2 victory from “Livin on a Spare”. John Conroy (191) and Terry Crossan (181) led “Winter Bockers”. “No Alternates” welcomed Kathleen Henry back from a six month “retirement” then followed the lead of Ray Henry (182) defeating “Misfits” 5-2. Riveters Prepared to Drop Locals Shine At Hoban Run the Puck on Inaugural Season With Special Events Over the summer the Rockaway Times reported about the founding of the National Women’s Hockey League. Spearheaded by former Northeastern University player Dani Rylan, the new league will feature four teams—the New York Riveters, Boston Pride, Buffalo Beauts, and Connecticut Whale. The hometown team, the Riveters, will play their games at nearby Aviator Sports at Floyd Bennett Field. With that in mind, the Riveters have some exciting events coming up in advance of their season opener on October 11th in Stamford, CT (their home opener is the following week, October 18th, against Boston). In a preseason matchup, the Riveters will take on the FDNY on September 27th at 3:30 p.m. at Aviator. Tickets can be purchases at the door or online.
On October 1, the NWHL Foundation, which seeks to support the long-term growth of the league as well as fostering the growth of women’s hockey nationwide, will be holding a VIP fundraiser called Skates and Plates at the Manhattan Penthouse, located on 80 Fifth Avenue, from 7 p.m.-11 p.m. The dinner will feature current NWHL players and representatives and other special guests such as Patrick Burke, one of the directors of the You Can Play Project. Finally, in addition to the preseason game against FDNY, the Riveters will play one more game prior to the start of the season against the Minnesota Whitecaps at Chelsea Piers. Tickets can be purchased at nwhl.co/buy-tickets and will only be $5.

Poseidon’s Parade Makes Big Debut Splash By Katie McFadden Last Saturday’s parade was fit for a “God of the Seas.” Poseidon’s Parade made its debut—and it was big one. Several days later, the rave reviews are continuing to pour in. Poseidon’s Parade, Rockaway’s spin off of Coney Island’s Mermaid Parade, was a huge hit. Mermaids,
As a member of the Rockaway Mermaid Brigade, the Rockaway troupe that has participated in Coney Island’s Mermaid Parade over the past decade, Brouder knew now was the time for Rockaway to have its own creative, nautical, tribute to the ocean. “Poseidon’s Parade is an art parade. It is a celebration of the ocean and artistic
sea monsters, sailors, crustaceans and more took over the newly built boardwalk to pay homage to end of summer on Saturday, September 19. Even the parade’s founder, Casey Brouder aka Queen Mermaid, wasn’t quite sure how the day would turn out, but was overwhelmed to see the results of months of planning and hard work. “At first I thought it would be a few floats and some marchers. When I saw the tremendous turnout, not only from participants but from spectators lining the boardwalk, I was brought to tears,” Brouder said. “I think it was a total success. The floats were amazing, the costumes were creative, and the air was filled with true Rockaway spirit.”
expression. Watching the Mermaid Brigade grow, from a few quirky artists and musicians, into a complete empire over this past decade made it apparent that we were destined to share this magical experience with our hometown,” Brouder said. “Rockaway is filled with creative people just waiting for an excuse to wear a costume and roll the summer out in style.” While the Mermaid Brigade marches together under one theme in Coney Island’s parade, members of the troupe broke off into their own groups and floats during Rockaway’s event, to add more substance and diversity to the event. Several members spearheaded their own groups and recruited other friends to join in, like the Lifeguards, Healy’s Irish Mer-
maids, the Recycled Sea Creatures and more. Brouder says roughly 114 people and 12 floats participated in the inaugural event, and many of them went home with awards for their creative efforts. The Best Individual Child award went to “Kid’s Whalemina” and “Catch of a Lifetime” won Best Individual Adult. The Best Kid’s Group went to the “Sunken Treasure” float and Healy’s Irish Mermaids took home Best Adult Group. Best overall float went to Poseidon. Best Wagon/ Baby Carriage was the “Scary Pirate Ship.” The Best Bike award went to the Seahorses. The Recycled Sea Creatures took home an award for Best Recycled Float. The Best Pet award was for a cat donned in a lobster costume. The Best Theme award went to the Lifeguards, or the “Guardians of the Atlantic.” Last, but not least, the Sexcamaids Dance Troupe took home the Best in Show award for their choreographed performances throughout the parade.
ment was a pleasure to work with. She is an advocate for the arts and I look forward to working with the both of them again,” Brouder said. “Alex Cannon was a huge help creating the website and making registration possible. Thank you to Katie Honan, my creative partner since the third grade. Thanks to Deidre Maeve’s of Breezy Point for donating water and thanks to Kuff Daddy Dollars. Thanks to the entire Mermaid Brigade for breaking off and creating their own artistic visions, and taking great pride in everything they brought to this event. Thank you to Materials for the Arts for donating materials and thank you to everyone that volunteered, this would not be possible without you.” Poseidon’s Parade was such a success that talks about next year have already begun. “I could hear people from the sidelines talking about what they were going to make for next year,” Brouder recalled. “I will be meeting with the team this week to debrief.
Sitting in decorated lifeguard chairs at Beach 95th Street, five qualified judges, rated the participants. Among them were Whitney Aycock of Whit’s End, interior designer Leslie Buttera, actress/ comedian Mary Ann Hedderson, engineer and Navy man Michael Byrnes and painter/artist John Hedderson. Categories were judged by creativity, enthusiasm, and originality. While Poseidon’s Parade may be the brainchild of Brouder, she credits many others for helping make the event possible. “Dolores Orr from Community Board 14 was very helpful in getting things done through this whole process. Portia Dyrenforth from the Parks Depart-
There were some minor issues as were expected being our first year.” The Mermaid Brigade will meet on Thursday to discuss any issues and some of the plans for 2016. The date and route for next year are among some of the talking points. “We would like to keep the Parade around the autumnal equinox ending the summer. I’m sure the route will expand being that it had such a great turn out,” Brouder said. Poseidon’s energy may be sparked in the offseason as well. “There have been talks of a possible Poseidon’s Prom in the winter,” she added. Photos by John Cori, Dan Brown, Paul Lurrie, Nick Bruzzese

AHOY ROCKAWAY! Water Temperature: 73*F Coney Island Lunar Eclipse- September 27, 2015 (Super Moon) Expect tides to be higher and lower than normal for a few days before and after this moon. Fluke season ended on September 21, 2015 AHOY Anglers (and non-Anglers), autumn has finally arrived in Rockaway and Broad Channel and the “cooler weather couldn’t be more welcomed. Summer ran a bit longer than it should have, as most of us know by turning the A/C on way into September. The cooler, drier air that is settling in around the area is much more comfortable as fall temperatures finally arrive. The Harvest Moon will be over Rockaway and don’t forget to view the Lunar Eclipse on September 27. If the weather is clear you should have a great view of the Moon turning red, pink and brown in color as it slips behind the Earth’s shadow. The longer light waves of orange, yellow and red from the Sun’s light reflecting off the moon get filtered through Earth’s atmo-

sphere to give it that ghostly reddish (sometimes really red) appearance. It is also Perigee, the point where the moon is closest to the Earth, so close that it looks like you could hit it if you threw a rock at it. It’s a good night to go out to any of the great restaurants in Rockaway, grab a bite, and then watch the celestial show. Be alert for local flooding for a few days before and after this moon. Tides will higher and lower than normal and currents will be running stronger in both the bay (inside), and in the ocean (outside). Moonrise over Rockaway is at 6:36 P.M. on September 27. Fluke season was over September 21 and it was a strange one (compared to last year’s bonanza). Fluke fishing was great until the end of July to early August this season. Warmer (inside) water temperatures sent the tasty flatties to the cooler surf (outside) for a while before lining up for their migration (the surfcasters did well with them this year). The local “scuttlebutt whispered in the back of dimly lit tackle shops at 5 a.m. between coffee sips is that there has been an increase in sharks in the area this season. Tigers, and other local species. It is important to note that NOT all local anglers (or tackle shops) put any stock into this “shark theory for the lower fluke numbers this season. They are instead blaming poor regulations from past seasons and warmer water temperatures. The “shark theory sure is fun (and scary at 5 a.m.), and I rate it “as good as any other fish story out there. Local anglers did catch quite a few sharks this season, I’ll say that, and leave it there! Fish species are cyclical and populations will rise and fall according to conditions, regulations, sportsmanship, and predators. A Rockaway sportsman always plays by the rules, even when nobody is looking. Only keep what you will eat, and if its size/ species is unknown or questionable release the fish gently back into the water. Be respectful of other people and dogs that use the waterfront area. Always clean up; never leave any mono-filament line or hooks or trash behind where you fish. We checked in with our local stations to find out where the fish are, and what bait/lures they are chasing. Now would be a good time to throw a 1 oz. “Kastmaster with a buck tail and a sand worm on it out into the surf around the rocks to see what’s on the bite. Big Ron’s fishing station in Howard Beach: We spoke with Big Ron and he tells us that the change of season action is definitely improv-

ing and larger bluefish are starting to move through the back bays on the prowl for bunker (bait fish). Ron tells us that some striped bass were taken on the inside over at the M.T.A. Rail Road Bridge. Porgies are all over the place in strong numbers, especially at the bridges. Tom’s Wave Service Station/ bait & tackle on B.C.D. in Rockaway Park: We called Tom and he informs us that the porgies are everywhere and all along the sea wall. The best bet is to use worms, but they are also hitting on an offering of clams. There are some small blue fish in the surf on the beach side, and we expect the size and numbers to increase. Tom also told us that there are bluefish being caught at Beach 118th on the inside (bay). Some small Weakfish are around, but everyone is throwing them back because they are under-sized (under 16 in length). Well that’s the scoop anglers, good luck on your fishing, and be aware of the tides, until next week.
