COMMUNITY BOARD APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN

Want to become more active in the community? Consider applying to be a Community Board 14 member. The Queens Borough President’s office is now accepting applications through January 31. Acting Borough President Sharon Lee is accepting applications from qualified and civic-minded individuals interested in serving on one of the borough’s 14 Community Boards, which play an important advisory role in considering land use and zoning matters in their respective districts. “Civic engagement is a hallmark of our borough and city governance is only strengthened by the residents across Queens who make their voices heard and represent their neighborhoods and communities,” Borough President Lee said. “Government is more effective and accountable when it works in close partnership with active, dedicated residents and relies on them for their insights and broad expertise.”
The Community Board membership application is available online at www.queensbp. org/community-boards. The deadline to submit completed, signed and notarized applications to the Borough President’s office is Friday, January 31, 2020. Two-year terms of service will begin on Monday, April 1, 2020. Community Boards hold monthly full membership meetings. All Queens Community Board members are appointed by the Queens Borough President, pursuant to the City Charter, with half of the appointments nominated by NYC councilmembers representing their respective Community Districts. Each Board has up to 50 unsalaried members, with each member serving a twoyear term. All Community Board members who wish to continue serving on a Board are required to re-apply at the conclusion of their two-year term and are subject to review and reconsideration.

The Dropout Goes All Out for Down Under By Katie McFadden
The Dropout is going all out to help those Down Under. Rockaway knows how it feels when disaster strikes, which is why the community is paying it forward to a place going through its own disaster—Australia. On Saturday, January 18, from
1 p.m. to 7 p.m., The Dropout at Bay 9 in Riis Park is hosting the Rockaway Strong: Australia Bushfire Relief Fundraiser, and everyone is welcome to show their support. When Julia Steinberg, owner of The Dropout, saw the death and destruction caused
by mass bushfires in Australia, she wanted to do more than watch the terror unfold on the news. “I was feeling so bad for these people and it reminded me of how we were all feeling really hopeless after Hurricane Sandy. Then I started to remember the feeling of when people from everywhere were helping me and my family and most of the donations came from people who don’t live in Rockaway. It meant so much to know that other people cared,” Steinberg said. “I think everyone can agree that we couldn’t have rebuilt the way we did without the help of so many people and I feel that this community is willing to give back and this is a great opportunity to show what we can do to help other people.” So she came up with an idea to host a fundraiser to help those in Australia, and what started as a small effort, has blossomed into a strong community effort that will make for a fun local event on Saturday.
From gift baskets with gift cards donated by Whit’s End and Bungalow Bar, a plethora of gift cards and prizes donated by Cuisine by Claudette, Thank You café, Last Stop, Curran’s, Boardwalk Pizza, Pico, Batesy’s, Harbor Light, Thai Rock, Rockaway Beach Bakery, Zingara Vintage, Nicole Frontera Beauty, Locals Surf School, Ocean Bliss Yoga,
Spa Rockaway, NurtureU Wellness, and other shops in Brooklyn, swag donated by FarRock Shop and SUPERARE and much more, the prizes are endless for the Chinese Auction that will help raise money. The Dropout itself will be serving up brunch early on and then concesContinued on page 7

BOYLEING POINTS
Piece Of Cake I think I mentioned that I’m riding my bike from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina to Tampa, Florida but I can’t be sure after getting pelted with rain and hail on the second day of this 500-mile trip. One thing is for sure and that is, it'll be longer than 500. GPS or Google Maps knows how to get you lost sometimes. Plus you add miles when you forget stuff back at the hotel or go on missions of mercy. I’m biking with Rick Horan and both our bikes have batteries which help a great deal when your bike is packed and looks like an RV. But batteries die. And they do when you’re miles from anywhere and it starts to rain. Rick began having mechanical difficulties after going a little fast before hitting a bump. His tail light flew off and slid under my tire as I was behind him. But I hit the light at an angle. Like a pee-wee from March of the Wooden Soldiers (remember Stanley hitting those things?) it flew into the air off the wooden bridge we were on and…into a muddy creek. Gone. It was funny but was also the beginning of fender problems for the Rickster. Which we didn’t appreciate until day two. We rode 34 miles that first day, not wanting to do too much because 63 awaited us on day two. And on the big day, we were a solid seven miles in before Rick’s fender started rubbing against his tire which caused the battery to overwork. So, by mile 25, give or take, his bike died. He tried old-fashioned pedaling but it was draining. The gas station we had stopped at was three miles back and the next one was 10 miles ahead. And did I mention
it was raining? I biked back to the gas station with his battery and charger. There was no way he could pedal his bike without battery assistance. I left poor Rick on the side of the road and told him I’d be back as soon as I got his battery charged, or at least partially charged. At one point, I called him to check on him and actually woke him up. He was exhausted from the pedaling he did after the battery died. I finally got what I thought was enough juice in his battery and hustled back to where I’d left him. It was quite the scene. The bike was there and so was what looked like a trash bag— but there was no sign of Rick, until the trash bag moved. He had brought a tarp with him, so he covered himself as the rain poured down and then stayed there until I returned. (See the photo). We got pedaling again and got to see some cool sights, including a green swamp. Green swamps don’t sound cool, but this one was. Lots of people waved at us, both in cars and from front porches. One lady waved at us from so far away we thought she might be waving to someone else—but then we realized we were going down some road that few humans had ever tried. A black muscular dog scared us when we turned down some dirt road and it came around a corner, but he was as polite as most Southerners. And then Rick’s battery died again. And it was near dark. The hotel was 10 miles away. But it had stopped raining, so I wasn’t too afraid of him electrocuting himself when he
Page 5
plugged his charger into a light pole. And the frigging thing actually worked. With back-and-forths and more than a few wrong turns, the 63-mile trip clocked in at 76. The hotel was just outside Beaufort, SC and everything was closed. I didn’t think I’d eat Papa John’s unless there was a gun to my head, but I can say it was one of the greatest meals of my life (which followed one of the greatest warm showers of my life). But this is what we signed up
for. We’re heading for Florida and it’s not like a quick ride to the concessions. Gotta expect the unexpected. The next day was a beauty and we sailed into Savannah, Georgia, completing a 51-mile day. I’ve learned Rick is a slow eater. Oh, it’ll be a whole column one day. And I’ve learned the butt pain is real and the importance of padded underwear. Want to follow the journey? Go to YouTube and search: “Rockaway Times.” Next stop: nowhere, Georgia.

Not For Us We’ve decided to turn down advertisements from a law firm seeking to find victims of clergy abuse for the purpose of filing lawsuits before a New York State court deadline. To be clear, we fully acknowledge the reality of the abuse and the pain it caused countless victims. And if possible, legal recourse should be an option. If allegations are false, well, that’s what courts are for. And if victims want to have a say in court, and haven’t yet done so, it’s their right. The advertisements in question want to let
victims know they have rights and options. We take no issue with that. But it’s understandable that the ads themselves were upsetting to some. There was another set of ads we’ve run recently regarding elder abuse. These ads showed old people with marks on the face, depicting violence. These ads were placed by NYC Department for the Aging. Again, elder abuse is a real matter and if people need to be made aware that help is out there, then we see the value in advertising the issue.
The Rockaway Times
The clergy and the elder abuse ads were not subtle. Advertisers sometimes seek shock value to provoke a response but sometimes it cuts both ways: they reach their audience but upset others in the process. It’s a balance between calling attention and going too far. The clergy ads were not only graphic but, in effect, cast a cloud over local parishes. The Rockaway Times is advertiser-supported, and we are in a deadline business and sometimes there’s just
not that much time to consider the possible impacts such ads might have. The Rockaway Times is a community newspaper, first and foremost, and we promote the positive, the good people here. We’ve had a great relationship with local parishes, and we value that relationship. These ads are at odds with what we do. Thanks for your understanding. -Kevin Boyle Publisher, The Rockaway Times

THE DROPOUT Continued from Page 3 sion-type food for the remainder of the event and will donate 50% of the food profits toward the cause. A true Rockaway fundraiser wouldn’t be complete without live music, and there will be plenty of it on Saturday. Shannon Dinerman, the Beasy band, Justine Grove, Mike & Miley, The Porretto Brothers, Kyle Wade, Chris Solo and Tiffany Lyons, and Wine With Sue are all on the lineup. The gift donations and stacked music lineup are the result of a mass community effort, which Steinberg says she was surprised to see for an event planned on such short notice. “It’s been incredible. I thought we’d be hosting a small fundraiser with a few bands and raffles, but everyone has been so generous and its grown and taken on a life of its own. This is the entire community coming together to do this. But Rockaway loves a good fundraiser. I’m surprised at how fast this was able to grow, but
I’m not surprised by the generosity of the people here, Steinberg said. In addition to her own efforts of making the rounds to local businesses to seek donations, Steinberg says she had a lot of help to make this event possible. She credits her best friend, Michelle Murray, for helping to coordinate the event, Chris Long for helping to coordinate the music and Catherin Yeager-McQuaid for seeking donations from local wellness businesses and professionals. “By no means am I doing this alone, Steinberg said. All of the fun will take place under a special tent that will be posted outside of The Dropout on Saturday. The event is free to attend, but any donations are welcome. Cash is encouraged to purchase tickets to be used for the Chinese Auction. There will also be special event t-shirts and koozies available for purchase. For any updates, check out the “ROCKAWAY STRONG: AUSTRALIA BUSHFIRE RELIEF FUNDRAISER! event on Facebook.

***** Brion McManus alerted us to an item in The Irish Post, which is quite a humdinger (a word we don’t use often, but should!). It seems there is a little-known fact that President John F. Kennedy was a painter or watercolorist in his day. In 1960, while campaigning for president, he did a painting and gifted it to a friend, so it has remained unknown until now as it is going up for auction. What makes it a humdinger is that the painting is of the Marine Park Bridge. He inscribes the painting with “Marine Bridge from Sheepshead Bay JFK ’60.” We’re not sure if the painting is a masterpiece but it’s pretty neat.

in photos to Local Color. We have to say the photos we get each week are better than ever. We hope some of you will include them in the annual photo contest. That’s right, if you send photos to Local Color you can also submit them in the upcoming photo contest. So get out there and shoot and send them in to: Mail@Rockawaytimes. com ***** The Marcal Group, currently transforming the beach blocks of Beach 116th Street with condos and commercial spaces, bought the Community House on Beach 102nd Street several months back. They seem to be wasting no time there as well. A green construction fence is up, and demolition will soon commence. The principals say they will build market-rate housing and they “believe in Rockaway.” ***** Rockaway native John P. McGonigal Jr. was killed in the Vietnam War in 1968. (Katie McFadden did a story in May 2018 about John and a ceremony organized by Dee McClean in
John’s honor). We were alerted by John’s brother, Tom, that after a delay, they will be adding John’s name to the Vietnam War Memorial in downtown Manhattan in March. Tom will be playing with the FDNY Pipe Band for this occasion. ***** The red tape baloney continues. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has the Reformulation Study (the jetties and other beach protection plans) and are supposed to be reviewing it before they send it back to the Army for Civil Works Assistant Secretary, who does the final sign off. Frustrating. And really potentially dangerous. ***** Plunges ahead: On Saturday, February 1, The Final Plunge, in honor of Annie McMahon will take place on the bay in Breezy. (See Page 17 for more details. And the next day, February 2, the Rockaway Business Alliance wants you to join in the Polar Plunge on Beach 67th. It’s a fun time and they hope to raise funds for the Arverne by the Bay Community Center.

Local Support for PR Puerto Rico, a popular winter retreat for many Rockaway locals, has been rocked by a series of earthquakes over the last few weeks. With the largest being a 6.4 magnitude quake on January 7, and several strong aftershocks, the island, particularly the southwestern portion, has taken a beating. The quakes caused power outages, damaged homes resulting in people sleeping in shelters or outside, and at least one death. In true Rockaway fashion, locals are responding. An early support effort is being led by surf shop, Station RBNY. They are currently holding a raffle for a six-foot Station RBNY Hollingsworth surfboard, a single fin signed by legendary board shapers and poster and surf wax signed by Ben Gravy. Each raffle tick-
et is just $5 and can be purchased in-store or online at bit.ly/supportPRraffle Even if you don’t win, every ticket is also worth 10% off at Station RBNY (91-08 B Rockaway Beach Blvd.) All proceeds from the raffle go to those on the ground in Puerto Rico who are collecting supplies to bring to those in need. Winners will be selected on Saturday, January 18. Yogi Brenda Kittle is also teaming up with Ocean Bliss Yoga to present a donation-based Vinyasa Flow yoga class at 12 p.m. on February 1 at Ocean Bliss (Third floor of BHYC—533 Beach 126th Street). There is a $25 minimum donation being collected for the class. All levels are welcome. Donations will go toward a supply drive organized by Rockaway and Rincon surfer, Jeff Anthony.

This past Monday, January 13, NYC Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza hosted his first Community Education Council District 27 town hall meeting in Rockaway. The auditorium at Goldie Maple Academy in Arverne was packed with parents, teachers, school administrators and students expectantly waiting for the Department of Education chief to answer their questions about his plans of action to improve Rockaway children’s education. Carranza addressed concerns about gifted and talented programs, increasing student performance on standardized state tests, development of new schools on the peninsula, improving schools’ infrastructure, violence prevention and gun control, swim safety, and more. However, surprisingly one hot button issue was not discussed—the proposed men’s homeless shelter on Beach 101st, in an area teeming with thousands of students. The other surprising element of the town hall meeting was the format. Attendees had to submit their questions on a card upon entrance to the auditorium. No verbal questions were invited. Instead, Carranza and his team read out questions stated on the cards, to which he answered. Attendees were emphatically told that no outbursts would be tolerated, and if their questions were not addressed that evening, they would be answered via email. Carranza, flanked by D.O.E.’s Executive Superintendent Andre Spencer and Elementary and Middle School Superintendent Jennifer Carreón Ambert—both representing Queens South, and other education representatives, kicked off the meeting stating, “I tried to spend a lot of time in what I call, ‘historically underserved communities.’ These are com-
munities that have some significant challenges, some they can’t control. Who could’ve controlled Hurricane Sandy? However, with these challenges there hasn’t always been commensurate support from the organization we call the D.O.E. “As of two weeks ago, over 1.1 million students attend NYC public schools. Eighty-three percent of those students are Asian, Black and Latinos. And as we dive into these questions, our community is always about asking and answering the tough questions.” One tough question presented was: “What plan of action will be implemented to help students in District 27 increase performance on state exams.” Carranza responded, “We give our schools a lot of latitude to decide what their curriculum is going to be and what methods are going to be used. I’m not advocating state testing, but we need to know where our students are. NYS decides what the standards are, but what NYC gets to decide is what the curriculum is going to be to meet those standards. Instead of having 14 different assessments to measure our students at their grade level, we’re going to narrow it to down to three, and the curriculum schools use must be culturally-relevant, pedagogically-relevant and aligned to the state’s standards. Next year, the state’s standards will be changing, so we are working with schools to make sure our students meet those standards.” Continued on page 14

Revered Teacher, Mrs. Todes, Forever Remembered at Scholars’ By Ryan Schwach
Former students, colleagues and friends convened at Scholars’ Academy to dedicate a portion of the library to AnnMarie Todes, a revered former teacher who passed away in 2018. “Walking into Mrs. Todes' classroom was a sanctuary. Even at the tender age of 10, I knew I was in a special place. I fell in love with learning. She made everything fun and engaging, which made children excited to come to school each day. She lit up any room she entered,” Rebecca Circo, a former student of Mrs. Todes, who later became her colleague at Scholars’, said at the dedication of the AnnMarie Todes Readers’

The readers’ retreat is intended to be a haven for students to enjoy reading and learning, specifically with some of the books Mrs. Todes loved the most—the works of William Shakespeare, who she taught to her class every year through readings and having students perform some of The Bard’s greatest scenes. “This is what she wanted,” said an emotional Kim Barget, a colleague and close friend of Mrs. Todes, who added that all the

Mrs. Todes spent nearly 50 years in the New York public education system, with a large portion of that time in Rockaway at both P.S. 114 and Scholars’ Academy. She taught so long in Rockaway, that children of former students also became students.

Together, Jake and Drew Schwartz cut the ribbon on Wednesday, officially opening the AnnMarie Todes Readers’ Retreat to all current and future Scholars’ students, forever commemorating the life and teachings of a beloved “If you lived in Rockaway in teacher who had a lasting imthe 70s, 80s, 90s, having Mrs. pact. When I decided to become an educator, it was her words, her lessons and her dedication that inspired me,” she said. In regards to establishing more gifted and talented programs on the peninsula, Carranza, who last year received a lot of backlash about his desire to “reform” and even eliminate these programs, as he deems they are too exacting and exclude the majority of Latino and African American students, at the town hall, the D.O.E. chief was remarkably moderate. Though he emphasized that the department is not planning to eliminate the programs, Carranza said the department is “in the process of exploring other options.” Upon saying, “Gifted and talented in NYC is a myth. Gifted and talented is just segregation,” he received a resounding round of applause across the auditorium. He continued, “People get really upset when I tell them the truth, but I’ve got 1.1 million kids and those are my constituents. I want these programs to be about research-based proven strategies to give truly intellectually-gifted children what they need to succeed, not about the myth that some kids are gifted, and others aren’t. So we are in the process of exploring better options. And note, Rockaway is number one on the list of where we are going to put these specialized programs that currently do not exist.” One attendee posed a question about what the D.O.E. is doing to improve school safety and enforce gun control. Carranza said, “Student safety is paramount. What we are excited about is that we have a very good working relationship with the NYPD. When we think about what is happening in the world, our world is usually a microcosm of our neighborhoods. A perfect example is the recent military action in Iraq. An hour after that happened, my phone was going off with all my NYPD contacts talking about counterterrorism, doing sweeps in schools and adding additional officers. That same action happens when there is an incident in our schools. Our question was how could we
The Rockaway Times respond to make sure our kids are safe. We added over 100 crisis counselors and social workers to deploy when an incident happens. We looked at the data to see where there is the highest need, including schools in Rockaway, and the data shows that incidences are down.” The conversation shifted to a very Rockaway-centric issue—the large housing/retail development currently underway in Far Rockaway and how the D.O.E. plans to coordinate school needs with the Department of City Planning to serve the growing population. After giving Councilman Donovan Richards a pat on the back for spearheading Downtown Far Rock’s rezoning and development, Carranza said, “Councilmember Richards has been an incredible partner with us to assess what developments are inline and what school seats need to look like. When you look at overcrowding that is happening in Queens and some parts in Rockaway, it is the most overcrowded in NYC. In the $16 billion fiveyear capital plan we just had approved this past school year, there is funding for 54,000 new seats in new schools and almost half of them are already in Rockaway.” Another Rockaway-centric question was about introducing swim safety in the schools: “Too many of our students are drowning. How can the D.O.E. fix our pools at Beach Channel and Far Rockaway H.S. campuses to implement swim safety and rip current education to save lives.” Carranza stated, “Yes, this is much needed as Rockaway is right on the water. We are going to assess which schools have pool facilities to teach swimming and water safety, plus also work with the local YMCA to see how we can organize a program for local students.” The town hall meeting ended promptly a feather over an hour. And as folks slowly dispersed, some murmured to each other about the lack of mention of the proposed homeless shelter on Beach 101st.

Rockaway, Meet the Queens By Katie McFadden
Rockaway, the queens have arrived. Over the past few months, drag queens have started to become a highlight of local nightlife, from ringing in the New Year with fabulous song and dance performances, to putting a blazing new twist on bingo and even promoting local businesses, Rockaway’s Queens have made it known that they’re here, and with one duo, the Rockaway Babes, kicking off a new residency at Whit’s End, they’ve made it clear that they’re here to stay. When the man behind the voluptuous, sassy, yet sweet queen, Ginger Ladd, moved to Rockaway about six years, he had dabbled with drag in his past, and it wasn’t until he found local inspiration that he thought maybe he, and Rockaway, were ready to let Ginger Ladd free. “The person that I have to
credit in Rockaway for giving me a sign that it would be okay—was Miss Colombia,” Ginger Ladd said. “I had met her a couple times and though we didn’t have a close relationship, I would see her living her truth and after she passed away and seeing the subsequent reaction to her loss by Rockaway, I realized there was a lot more love than I thought out here. I thought maybe it was time.” Soon the perfect opportunity presented itself with an event that celebrates everything a drag queen represents—creativity, art, performance and diversity. Ginger Ladd decided to make her debut at last year’s Poseidon’s Parade. “What better time than a parade that was celebrating diversity and love like Poseidon’s Parade to come out,” she said. When Ginger Ladd gained the support of her new neighbors in Arverne By The Sea, who had coordinated as a sea of jellyfish to surround Ginger Ladd with colorful choreography, the decision was made even easier. And it was the response to the voluptuous woman in a sparkly green dress and a pink wig during the parade, that gave her the reassurance that Rockaway was not only ready for drag, but supportive. “I felt like I was flying. It was incredibly wonderful after all this time thinking about it, to finally feel this rush of performance and the love from the people that enjoy it,” Ginger

Ladd said. Her husband, Mister Ladd, noticed it too. “I was blown away by Poseidon’s Parade. People were lining up, you had parents bringing their kids over, older women wanting to see her, biker guys in their 40s wanting pictures—it was across the board. Everyone was laughing and smiling, and it was like walking around with Mickey Mouse. There was this universal response of joy and it’s been like that every time,” Mister Ladd said. Not only did Ginger Ladd and her group of jellies earn an award for best block at the parade, but Ginger Ladd was given the gift of knowing that she could be her true self in her hometown. Ginger Ladd slowly started making more appearances, from participating in Blaze It Bingo at the Rockaway Brewing Company to even promoting local businesses like Vino by the Sea. Ginger Ladd’s presence was also starting to get noticed. By November, Cuisine by Claudette had created a cookie inspired by the drag queen herself and added it to the regular menu. According to Mister Ladd, it sells out so frequently that even he has
trouble finding them in stock. Having a cookie made to her likeness was a clear sign that Rockaway had embraced Ginger Ladd. “I kept getting these signs—the cookie, being invited to host events—it was clear that they wanted drag here. The Rockaways have surpassed any of my expectations for the joy they’ve received and returned,” Ginger Ladd said. It wasn’t long before Ginger Ladd realized that she was in good company and that she wasn’t the only queen in town. “I met Dreama Belle at the Rockaway Brewing Company and I felt this instant connection to her. She was frank and open and honest, and I was really attracted to that beautiful spirit,” Ginger Ladd said, immediately becoming inspired by this other queen who although new to Rockaway, had been doing drag professionally for about six years. On Halloween, both Ginger Ladd and Dreama Belle performed among other drag queens at a special event at the Brewery and realized it could be the start of something big to come. Together, they went on to make more appearances, from Continued on page 37

Sen. Sanders To Celebrate MLK’s Legacy Monday, January 20 is the 25th Anniversary of the MLK Day of Service, which empowers individuals, strengthens communities, creates solutions to social problems, and moves communities closer to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of a harmonious society. In honor of this day, Senator James Sanders Jr.’s office is hosting Blueprint For Success, a STEM/Tech event, where attendees will engage in banking and green workshops, hear panel discussions geared towards exposure to future opportunities in aviation and learn about the impact of STEM Education on emerging job fields. As an added treat, there will be lunch, music, dance and fun for the entire family. “The goal of this tech event is to promote economic growth, job creation, and provide career transitions that benefit all of southeast Queens,” Sanders’ office said. Observed each year on the
third Monday in January as “a day on, not a day off,” MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. “The example set by Dr. King is one that all New Yorkers, young and old, should emulate,” Sander said. “His values and goals still ring true today and can be realized through recommitting ourselves to justice and equality, community service and helping those who need our assistance and deserve our respect. As Dr. King famously said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?" Sanders’ M.L.K. Senator Sanders Invites You to Send a Valentine to an Elderly Veteran
NYS Senator James Sanders Jr., a Marine Corps veteran, invites the community to bring a little bit of happiness to an elderly veteran this Valentine's Day. About nine percent of the U.S. population are veterans of the U.S. military, and a large and growing proportion of this veteran population is composed of those age 55 and over, older Americans. So, why not show them some love for honorably serving our country by paying
it forward with a valentine! “On this holiday, when we celebrate the love and affection we have for the special people in our lives, it seems only fitting that we include those who have served our country,” Sanders said. Sanders is collecting greeting cards as well as new clothing items such as hats, gloves, scarves or socks, which he will present to elderly veterans in honor of Valentine's Day. Please drop off donations by Monday, February 3 to Senator Sanders' District Satellite Office at 1931 Mott Avenue, Suite 305 or at his main office at 142-01 Rockaway Boulevard in South Ozone Park. For questions or more info, contact Senator Sanders' Office at 718-327-7017 or 718-5233069.

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Ah, The Mediterranean If you are a reader of this column, then you know that I have written previously about the healthy effects of the Mediterranean diet. This diet, initially thought to be a fad diet when first introduced in the 1970s, is a healthy way to live and eat, especially when combined with moderate exercise and weight control. The main staple of the diet is olive oil, although most people who live in the Mediterranean basin use olive oil on salads and cook with lard and butter. The other ingredients of the diet include legumes (alfalfa, beans, peas, chickpeas, lentils, soybeans, and peanuts), unrefined cereals (aka whole
grains), fresh fruits, vegetables (including green leafy ones), fish, dairy (mostly cheese and yogurt), and red wine. There are very little non-fish meats, processed meats (hot dogs, sausage, bologna), eggs, and sweets in the diet. There is a paradox regarding those who live in the Mediterranean basin, akin to the French paradox. The paradox is that even though their diet is high in fat (and wine for the French), the rates of cardiovascular disease are much lower than most other western countries, including the U.S. The disease burden from obesity has increased rapidly during the past three decades in close

association with excess caloric intake and poor nutritional quality. Evaluations of lifestyle interventions to decrease obesity are among the top priorities in public health. Good adherence to the Mediterranean diet has been associated with reduced all-cause mortality, nonfatal cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and its long-term complications, and overweight/obesity. Studies have also shown reduced rates of metabolic syndrome, which is a combination of diabetes, elevated cholesterol, and hypertension. Not long ago, the results of a clinical study done in Spain, called the PREDIMED-Plus trial, were published. This study took the Mediterranean diet a step further. They looked at the effects of an energy-reduced Mediterranean diet vs. a standard Mediterranean diet. The control group ate the traditional Mediterranean diet, while the study group ate the energy-reduced one, which consisted of more restrictive limits on red and processed meats, butter, margarine and cream, and carbonated sweetened beverages. In addition, the study group did
The Rockaway Times not add sugar to beverages and limited consumption of white bread and refined cereals, while they increased their consumption of whole grains. The study group also had more dietary counseling sessions and physical activity. Both groups were provided with one liter per month of extra-virgin olive oil, 125 grams per month of almonds, and 500 grams per month of mixed nuts. Not surprisingly, the study group had much better adherence to the diet than the control group, plus better diet quality, energy intake, and lower cardiovascular disease risk. The study group also lost more weight and had a more reduced waist size than the control group. While these are just the preliminary results, it is anticipated that the study group will have even more reductions in diabetes and heart disease, as well as mortality rate, over time. If you haven’t already done so, look up the Mediterranean diet. After all, any diet that includes wine can’t be all that bad. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes. com.

The Rockaway Times
Disconnecting I became part of an environment with three kids, ages three, five and seven, where electronics were just a way of life. It was a common practice for us to hand them the iPad if they were bored, if we needed a minute to get something done, or if we were traveling anywhere further than a block. It wasn’t until a year ago when we were headin g out the door and the youngest yelled, “How could you forget to charge my iPad?” At that moment, we were done with their expectations on
electronics. We were being trained by children to always provide a stimulant and ensure they were charged and ready to go. The next day, we called a family meeting. We let them know that the only time they were going to be allowed to use their iPad was when we would be at the gym. Max time: one hour per day. The first 30 days were the hardest. They were going through withdrawals; we didn’t know how to occupy their attention or their time. We quickly realized how hard
it was—however we couldn’t go back. They wouldn’t believe anything we said if we went back on our word. So, we dug deep. We listened to the whining, the complaining, the temper tantrums. We have never been told so many times how terrible we were. After about two months, everything started to change. They stopped asking. We started with a deck of cards and board games. Then puzzles, hide and seek, bike rides, and capture the flag. The summers are the easiest. We can get on bikes and go down the boardwalk. We stop at all the parks and before we know it, we’ve spent six hours outside. The winters can get a bit challenging because we didn’t allow our lack of iPads to be replaced with spending money on entertainment. We have advanced to camping in the woods for two weeks in the summer, and a conversation jar to learn more about each other. Of course, we watch MasterChef Junior, however we
Page 27 keep our TV time to under five hours per week. And for the past six months, the iPads have been replaced with books at the gym. Now, we begin and end each day with mood meters, and our dinners involve compliment circles. Not all days are pretty, and sometimes they don’t want to participate. They do fight more without the distraction of a screen—yet we also never seen them play so much with one another. Just by listening to them, we learned they love to cook. The oldest has us participate in any sport imaginable. And the youngest loves puzzles. Our goal is to take it one day at a time. We know cell phones are on our horizon. For now, we are going to enjoy them being little and not worry about social media. We will cross that bridge when we get there. Community Board 14 January Meeting Recap By Marina Cregan
The first meeting of the new year for Community Board 14 (CB14) took place on Tuesday, January 14. The Knights of Columbus was packed with Rockaway residents all eager to hear CB14’s plans for the year ahead. CB14 altered the agenda, by opening with the new Commander of the 101st Precinct, Captain Eric Robinson, officially introducing himself to the Rockaway community. Robinson was assigned to the 101st Pct. back in November. Working in the borough of Queens for almost seven years now, Robinson is, “beyond thrilled that [he] is here in the 101st part of the Rockaways,” because of the peninsula’s “sound philosophy of it’s ‘us vs. them’, an island amongst ourselves, which I am very much here to embrace.” Robinson discussed the new changes within the justice system, regarding bail reform and new discovery laws. Understanding the many justifiable
concerns he has heard from the community, he assured the people that "we, as a community, will get through it.” Although it is a new challenge, Robinson expressed that our elected officials, such as Councilman Donovan Richards, Assemblywoman Stacey Pfeffer Amato, and Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr., have sworn to work with the NYPD by staying in tune with what is going on within the community and expressing the communities’ concerns with the precinct. Captain Robinson also addressed an important issue, Far Rockaway faces, which is the infrastructure and traffic problems caused by streets being torn up. The NYPD got together with traffic experts and

drove around Far Rockaway, pointing out all the problems, and assured everyone in the room that some of them will be fixed in the future. Robinson concluded by encouraging community members to come into the precinct to express any concerns they might have to him, as well as his staff, some of whom have been working in the 101st Pct. for 10+ years now and are knowledgeable of the issues the peninsula faces day to day.
As the meeting moved forward, CB14 greeted Acting Borough President Sharon Lee, who came to introduce herself briefly, before hearing reports from the chair, Dolores Orr. During her report, Orr expressed her wishes for the Army Corps Engineers to follow what has happened in terms of barges and transportation for materials. Orr went to the Port Authority last week, where they assured her that Continued on page 29

COMMUNITY BOARD Continued from Page 28 all debris around JFK will be leaving by barge. Because of the Port Authorities’ plans to transport by barge, she hopes the Army Corps will follow this example in the development of rock jetties, to ensure no additional damage will be caused to our roadways. As the floor opened up for public speaking, half of the 10 people who signed up to speak, spoke about the MTA’s bus redesign plan of discontinuing the Q53 and realigning the stops on the Q22, making its last stop on Beach 116th. Assembly District Leader Lew Simon described the MTA’s redesign plan as a “disaster in the making.” He concluded his speech by urging community members to attend two upcoming meetings to fight against this change. The first meeting is at Rockaway’s RISE on February 5, followed by another meeting at the Rockaway YMCA on February 6. The public speaking portion of the meeting concluded with
THURSDAY, JANUARY 16, 2020 the Department of Sanitation’s Community Affairs officer, Chris Velez, who informed the people of New York State’s new law regarding the ban on plastic bags in grocery stores and other commercial establishments. While the new law will go into effect on March 1, 2020, Velez urged the people to start the transition from plastic bags to paper bags. In efforts to begin this transition, Velez even gifted people who attended the meeting free NYC Dept. of Sanitation paper bags. Next, the NYC Department of Design and Construction presented their plans for the Arverne Public Library Expansion, located on Beach 54th. Coordinator of Government Affairs, Jomo Blackman, began the presentation by expressing how important libraries are for after-school programs and how they are pinnacles of the community. When elaborating on design plans for the expansion, the design team expressed that the floor of the new expansion will be created 4.5 ft. above the street in order to protect from
future floods. With this expansion, there will be about 4600 square footage of space added to the existing library. The new expansion will have three separate areas, which will include a community/multi-purpose room, a room designated for children, and a common room. They also incorporated an environmentally friendly Greenwall, which will have water plots where children can water and nurture plants on their own, making it interactive for the kids. Although the design plan seemed great on paper, community members proposed alternative ideas for the new expansion, such as adding a second and third floor to the existing library, rather than an extension. The design team reiterated that, because the library is in a flood zone, the existing infrastructure cannot handle the load of additional floors. After addressing questions brought up by community members, the design team predicted that construction on the library should begin in 2022, and will hopefully be open by
Page 29 Summer 2023 the latest. The presentation concluded with Orr asking them to provide the square footage of the existing library, so the community board could take a closer look at what can be moved into the new expansion to give the existing library more space. Wrapping up the meeting, District Manager Jon Gaska agreed to write two letters. The first letter will be written to the Department Of Education’s District 27 Superintendent Jennifer Ambert, in regards to the selection of the Scholars’ Academy’s new principal. Gaska will ask Ambert to include the SLT and PTA in the selection process, because the community deserves to be involved in knowing who will be in charge of educating their children. The second letter will request a meeting with first Deputy Commissioner of the NYC Dept. of Parks & Recreation, Liam Kavanagh, to discuss what beaches will be open this summer, as well as possibly increasing the number of lifeguards stationed on each beach.

Dear Editor: I am married to a NYC EMT... what does this mean for our family? I assume that you expect to hear tales of missed holidays, no sleep, long hours and thankless situations, and while all of this rings true, it's not the hardest part of my husband's career. The toughest part for him (and our family) is payday. Yes, payday because on that day, it's decision time. Do we pay rent or our other bills (because Lord knows there's not enough for both)? Do groceries have to wait a few days until I make some money, or can we shop? Heaven forbid we have an event coming up, a medical necessity, or unforeseen car trouble, as his income doesn't allow for the added bill of a car note, which would provide us with a reliable vehicle. So you see, along with carrying the weight of seeing some of the most awful situations that people have to endure, maybe it's a child being pulled from an abusive home (or worse, not being taken from one) or maybe trying unsuccessfully to revive an elderly person in front of their loved ones, he has to walk through our door with the defeat of not only the day, but also of not being even close to properly compensated for it. You see, in NY, EMTs make about half of what their firefighter, or police counterparts make, with less opportunities for advancement, less support from their union and the same expectations. Now that being said, the fact remains that when a cop is shot, or a fireman is pulled
The Rockaway Times from a burning building, do you know who they call? My husband! He is there, when the worst happens, he is rushing his cohorts to the hospital, praying with, and for them... then coming home to the stress of a house we don't own, sharing a single car, mountains of unpaid bills and not much support from his "higher-ups." This is another fact of his job, while cops and firemen have wonderful brotherhoods, ripe with comradery, history, and deep respect ; being paid an insulting salary, leaves EMT houses full of drama, backbiting, and a climate of "every man for himself." So you may ask why he does it, why he continues with this career. Well... he loves it. He has seen babies born, revived people having heart attacks, comforted scared children with broken bones, and yes, HE HAS SAVED LIVES!! He always says, "trust me, if you call 911, you want the response to be by someone who loves the job," and the sad reality is that so many of these men and women don't. The discouraging nature of being deemed unworthy of a comparable wage leaves many of them frustrated, insulted, and angry. Every few weeks the debate starts again. Can we make it this month, do we move, does he switch careers? So many people respect what he does but don't truly understand it, it's most definitely more of a calling for him. He also works in the same neighborhood where we live, so on multiple occasions we have encountered people who have a family member (or maybe they themselves) who he has helped. It's always the same... "oh my God you saved my dad, can I buy you a drink?" or "hi aren't you the guy who picked me up last month? THANK YOU!" or "my grandma is still here because of you." He's helped these people on their worst days, yet we struggle, and the struggle is scary and real for so many doing this job, but why? Why can't our city figContinued on page 31

Achieving Fame Dear Editor: My name is Mia Capasso and you published my work one week ago on January 2. I am one of the students in the Creative Writing Club at PS/ MS114. Once I saw my creative writing teacher, Mrs. Diehl, walk into my writing classroom I was giddy, because I saw tucked into the crook of her arm, the latest edition of The Rockaway Times. She looked over at me with a grin. "You did it," she exclaimed, pulling me over

towards a desk in the front of the room. She flipped hastily through the pages as my fellow classmates gathered around to see what the commotion was about. Finally, she took her hands away from the paper and my jaw dropped. There in the upper corner was my name, Mia Capasso, in bold. I felt overjoyed as I squealed like a little kid on Christmas morning, "Yay,Yay,YAY!" I started jumping up and down and continued until my thighs were sore. Mrs. Diehl had a huge smile and asked if she could get a hug. I hugged her and skipped back to my seat with the biggest grin plastered across my face. It stretched like a rubber band from ear to ear. I felt amazing and for that I thank you all for giving up pages of the newspaper for free to publish the students’ work at PS/MS114 and making me and many other students feel special. The joy I felt when seeing my name in the newspaper couldn't compare to anything else. That paper made my year!

the theater company is able to reinvest money earned from ticket sales into improving the theater, keeping each production refreshing and up to date with the newest lighting techniques, sound, and computer systems. After 20 years of her involvement with the RTC, producer Susan Jasper, says, “Seeing the idea for a show being proposed, how a director can get a cast together and rehearse it, organize the sets, and make their vision come out to an excellent production is what makes all of my time and dedication to the theater worthwhile.” The RTC utilizes all of their resources into producing productions that Jasper feels are, “just as good as Broadway.” Want to see what makes the RTC the “Best of the Boro?” See one of their many upcoming shows. Story and Photos by Katie McFadden
So two priests walk into a bar… That isn’t the start of a joke, but it sure was a fun time. On Friday, January 11, Father Jim Cunningham and Father Bill Sweeney of St. Francis de Sales, were behind the taps, keeping customers in a jam-packed Belle Harbor Yacht Club (BHYC), “spiritually fulfilled.” The second Holy Happy Hour, to raise funds for the parish, was yet another hit. The BHYC and its bartenders generously donated their time and tips as the priests joined them to serve customers. With thirsty churchgoers demanding more, those of the BHYC even decided to extend it an extra hour, continuing to
donate tips toward the cause, but it was last call for the priests who confessed that they may be better at prayers than pours. As customers waited for their drinks, Fr. Jim kept them entertained. “The other bartenders are running circles around you,” one patron joked. Fr. Jim shrugged, saying, “I’m better at other things.” During another instance, when counting out a customer’s change, he quipped, “Math wasn’t my best subject. It was more like Religion.” With live music by Anthem Acoustic, 50/50s, t-shirt sales and the celebrity bartenders being the biggest draw, the parish was able to raise a few thousand dollars. Cheers to Fr. Jim and Fr. Bill on a job well done!

ROCKAWAY, MEET THE QUEENS Continued from Page 16 doing more bingo events, to doing a surprise pop-up at Vino by the Sea’s anniversary party at Whit’s End in December, and the positive response made them realize maybe there was something more to this. “Dreama is a beauty and she’s smart, courageous and one of the biggest businesswomen that I know,” Ginger Ladd said. “We went out to eat and said we would work together in some capacity and Dreama came up with this concept of becoming a unit and bringing quality drag to the Rockaways.” The concept of Rockaway Babes was born. Receiving such a warm reception from Whitney Aycock of Whit’s End, the duo thought it would be a good idea to team up with him to help support his business, while having a venue to provide regular, quality entertainment. Dreama Belle came up with a professional business proposal for Rockaway Babes and presented it to Aycock, who was immediately open to the idea. “I walked in the door and sat down with him and 60 seconds later, he said, ‘alright, what date do you want?’ He was on board without even looking at the full proposal,” Dreama Belle said. “Whit is a gentleman and a professional and full of love and he recognized that we could be an asset to him. We will have a residency and will regularly perform our shows there. It’s incredibly rare to have someone treat you that well and immediately be an ally,” Ginger Ladd said about Aycock. That kindness was also extended by Mikal Hameed, owner of Rustwoods, located behind Whit’s End, who offered the Rockaway Babes their own space to set up as a dressing room to prepare for their shows. On Friday, January 17, the Rockaway Babes will make their official residency debut at Whit’s End, where they hope to perform monthly. The night will begin at 6 p.m. with a family-friendly show, appropriate
THURSDAY, JANUARY 16, 2020 for all ages, until 8 p.m. Starting at 9 p.m., the show will get a little more “spicy,” according to the Rockaway Babes. In a rare occurrence, Whit’s End is taking reservations for tables for the event. (Call 718-945-4100). However, those who just want to come watch either show can for just a $5 cover. Without giving too much away, the Rockaway Babes say Friday’s show will include production numbers, duets, story numbers, Disney tributes, incredible costuming and incredible production value. “I’m aiming to make it as close to a Vegas-quality performance level as I can,” Ginger Ladd said, adding that she’ll be pulling out all the stops beyond just fabulous costumes and wigs. The show will also include guest queen, Tina Twirler, a known contortionist in the New York drag scene. By the end of the night, the Rockaway Babes hope their audience mirrors what they reflect. “You’re going to feel good about yourself. You’re going to feel joy and laugh, and you might even get to know your neighbors,” she said. For those who can’t make it, don’t fret. The Rockaway Babes say they’re just getting started. In addition to their residency at Whit’s, where they plan to perform regularly at least once a month, plus holiday shows at the Rockaway Brewing Company and popups at other local businesses, the Rockaway Babes say they have big plans for the summer and may make frequent appearances on the boardwalk and at the concessions. “We’re in Rockaway because there’s a need for it. We’re filling a void that needed to be filled and we’re doing a service that a lot of folks in Rockaway want,” Dreama Bell said. “It’s something many in Rockaway didn’t know they wanted,” Ginger Ladd added. With drag shows being a relatively new phenomenon for Rockaway, the Rockaway Babes explained what drag is, and what is isn’t, for those who may not have experienced it before. “Drag is the art of transformation in its barest form. And it’s the art of
theater. For folks that aren’t as liberal in their thinking, if you can convey it in a way that this is a theater performance, a lot more people are willing to experience it,” Dreama Belle said. “We are not strippers. We are not doing sex work. We’re not burlesque dancers. We’re just giving a fun show.” “What it is, is a good time,” Ginger Ladd said. “It’s something to break the mundane. It’s not watching Netflix or simply going to the bar to get drunk—it’s having an experience that you haven’t had before. It’s very exciting to watch.” For those experiencing a show for the first time, it should be known that tips are encouraged. The Rockaway Babes advise that audience members respect their performance space, but if you’re enjoying the show, hold out a bill, and they’ll come to you. The Rockaway Babes believe there are good things ahead for the future of drag in Rockaway.
Page 37 “I think that the Rockaways are going to be heaven for drag,” Ginger Ladd said. “This started with just marching in a parade with my neighbors and all of a sudden, there’s been this sea of change in this community, which I think values our entertainment.” “We are truly here to stay. We are here for this community, we’re going to be relevant here and help build this community and we’re going to continue the positive flow of what we’ve been doing,” Dreama Belle said. “We’ve had a lot of great support and it makes it a lot easier when you have people supporting you.” If you’d like to find out the Rockaway Babes’ next steps, be sure to follow them on Instagram at @DreamaBelleOfficial, @TheGingerLadd and @RockawayBabes. Note: Out of respect to the privacy of the Queens, only their drag names were used.
NEARLY 800 AFFORDABLE HOMES COMING TO FAR ROCK The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) announced on Wednesday, January 15, financing for 793 new affordable homes in Downtown Far Rockaway. These homes add to the 590 new construction units financed in the area since the New York City Council voted in favor of a neighborhood rezoning in Far Rockaway in September 2017. The newly financed affordable housing units will be spread across three projects – RadRoc, Beach 21, and Rockaway Village Phase II. Upon completion, the units will be affordable to households earning a wide range of incomes, including the formerly homeless, extremely low- to moderate-income New Yorkers. The RadRoc development will be constructed on a private site and will include a total of 253 new affordable apartments across two 10-story buildings in Downtown Far Rockaway. Financed through the Extremely Low- and Low-income Affordability (ELLA) program, 10
percent of these units will be set-aside for formerly homeless households. 133 units will be affordable permanently. The 224-unit Beach 21 development was financed through the Multi-family Mix and Match program and includes 102 permanently affordable housing units that will serve a wide range of extremely low- to moderate-incomes, with 10 percent of the units to be set aside for formerly homeless households. The 10-story building will have space for the New Little Branches Inc./Lanza Learning Center for early childhood education and the Xposure Schools afterschool program. The second phase of Rockaway Village will include the construction of two new multi-family buildings with a combined total of 316 residential units, 224 of which will be affordable permanently. The development will include approximately 13,000 square feet of commercial space, public plazas, and other infrastructure improvements.
