Joe Butler, just 7 years old, was close to shore but also close to something else, a humpback whale who came up for some air off Beach 129th Street on Tuesday afternoon. The boy’s father, Jay, says the youngest wasn’t scared a bit.

A Rockaway Angel

‘Had a Lot of Love to Give’ only reason I can surmise for her untimely death was that Heaven needed a lot more love. She had a lot of love to give.” In June, Emily had graduated from the Laboure School, a program for special needs children. She spent some of her weekends volunteering at the CYO games at St. Francis de Sales. And she had a particular affinity for chicken fingers. Emily’s aunt, Kristin Hutton, said Emily gave hugs to everyone she met and would pay them compliments. Emily was always very positive, she said. Hutton said that the Bungalow Bar family saw Emily as a vital member of the team, for which their family is grateful. “It’s easy for a business to give a person with a disability a job that segregates them from everyone else,” Hutton said. “What’s different about Emily’s time at the Bungalow Bar is that they included her in the family of the people who worked there. They made her feel important even though her job may not have been one of the biggest jobs there was.” Tubridy insists that Emily was just as important to the Bungalow

Bar family as they were to her. He said she had the ability to bring about a soothing calm to the place, even during busy Saturday afternoons. Hutton said Emily’s family appreciates how loved she was by the community. “She loved being

part of the community – everyone was welcoming to her despite her differences,” she said. “It’s not the same for everybody growing up who might have some kind of challenge. She was really accepted and loved just as much as she loved everyone else.”

By Bianca Fortis Emily Hutton had a special way of letting people know how much she cared about them. She would motion for them to come near her and then she’d whisper “I love you” in their ear. “It’d melt your heart,” Sean Tubridy said. “You’d just fall to your knees.” Emily died last week at the age of 21 of apparent cardiac arrest. Her funeral was attended by hundreds of people, a testament to how loved she was by the Rockaway community. Tubridy, one of the owners of the Bungalow Bar, met Emily when he volunteered at the Special Olympics in 2000, during which Emily participated as an athlete. Several years later, Emily asked Tubridy for a job. She started at the Bungalow Bar later that week. She tended to various tasks around the restaurant, including wiping down the salt and pepper shakers, wiping down the menus and setting silverware and napkins. She took great care and pride in her work, Tubridy said. “I guess they call people with Down Syndrome angels,” he said. “The

Indian Summer Descends on Rockaway By Bianca Fortis Labor Day may have passed, but the summer is not quite over for one Rockaway resident. During the month of September, Rockaway will play host to the Indian Summer Festival, a food and drink tour of Rockaway organized by Belle Harbor native Matthew Alessi. The idea behind the festival is to extend Rockaway’s summer business boom past Labor Day, when tourism usually dies down. “After Labor Day there’s seems to be such a large fall off in business here,” Alessi said. “But in my opinion, September is honestly the most beautiful time to be in Rockaway.” The event takes place during the period of time between Labor Day – the unofficial end of summer for many New Yorkers – and the autumnal equinox, the astronomical beginning of the fall season. Alessi, 23, describes the festival as part bar crawl, part food tour of the peninsula. “But instead of me giving you a time and a place to go to each different business, you come pick up a bracelet and a map of Rockaway and do it on your

own,” he said. Wristbands cost $20 each when ordered online by the Friday before each weekend, and $25 when purchased at the event. The bracelets grant the wearer deals at 20 different Rockaway food and drink establishments. There are currently 500 bracelets available for each weekend. Most of the proceeds will go to local charities, Alessi said, including the Rockaway Artist Alliance, the Rockaway Little League, the Rockaway Youth Task Force and Arts in Parts. He said he wanted to give back to organizations that empower youth through art, sports and volunteerism. Claudette Flatow, of Cuisine by Claudette, said she is participating in the festival because she likes to be involved with anything and everything in the neighborhood. She said any attention the Rockaway community gets can help it recover after Hurricane Sandy. “We’ll do whatever we can just to put the neighborhood back together and make it better than it was,” she said. Her business will offer a free

espresso drink with the purchase of any latte. Newer businesses get a chance to participate too: Christopher Andrew, of Holland Helado, said he found out about the Indian Summer Festival through the social networking app Instagram, and wanted in. Christopher is offering his homemade artisanal ice cream sandwiches for $5 each. He’ll be previewing a new fall menu at the event as well. Christopher said he thinks it’s a great that Alessi, a young Rockaway native, wants to be involved in bettering the community. “I do think it’s a fantastic idea,” he said. “He’s a local young person trying to do something really fun with other small businesses that

will make an impact on the community. It’s a sweet deal for everybody.” Other specials include extended happy hour specials at Jameson’s Pub, $5 pulled pork sandwiches at Breezy’s BBQ and $3 off any arepa at Caraca’s. For more information about the festival, visit www.indiansummernyc.com. To purchase a wristband, go to indiansummerfestival. eventbrite.com.

Partly Kosher By Kevin Boyle Some people swear by the Farmer’s Almanac – others swear by the Jewish holidays. I’m probably putting the whammy on it but here goes. With Rosh Hashana, Yom Kipur, and Sukkot on the calendar, good weather’s on the way. Which reminds me. Rockaway might be known as the Irish Riviera but at the risk of being a real schlemiel I want to say The Riviera is more than partly kosher. We talk about the schlep into the City while noshing on bagels. (Forget for a second that you

buy bagels from a guy named Mohammad). And the mayor walking away from the ferry rally? That took some chutzpah. There’s definitely a Rockaway lingo but it’s often sprinkled with good old-fashioned Yiddish. Lord knows, I’ve been called a yutz, a putz and klutz. Especially when trying to schmooze. Before going any further here’s my warning label. I understand that some words aren’t to be used in polite company so if you’re polite, turn the page. I’m just a Joe Schmoe and I don’t

know bupkis. Although I do know that I felt like a schmuck for futzing around with my bike when I could have been at the beach. Some guy with a big schnoz was kibitzing the entire time, telling me to do this and that. Oy. You never know when some beach Yiddish will occur. I remember a guy with a slight Irish brogue say, “I shvitz like a pig in July and freeze my tuchis off the rest of the year.” Sometimes you might not use a word but when you hear it you can’t help but appreciate its use. “He’s such a schnorrer … first he borrows twenty dollars from me, then he has the chutzpah to ask for another twenty before paying me back.” You don’t hear schnorrer all that much but you do hear nudge (pronounced nooj). Sometimes a person who is a pain in the ass is called a nudge. After they pester

and pester somebody’s gonna say, “he’s such a nudge.” Sometimes words are perfectly descriptive. He’s a nice enough guy but he’s a bit of a schlub. Rockaway has its share of people who get all schmaltzy, as in excessively sentimental, when over-imbibing. Other people are identified by their schtick or signature behavior. I’ll kvetch about how I misused some of the words here. You try to be a mensch and you wind up being a nudnik. Mazel Tov. Boyleing Over: Oh, boy I got my McLeans mixed up. In last week’s column about surfing on ironing boards I said Dee McLean was the first Rockaway surfer to win an endorsement contract (from Hobie) but it was Dennis who was the king of the waves and nabbed the honor.

The High Tide A little of this and that We hate to steal his thunder but we’ve got to highlight another classic from Peter Mahon’s Between The Bridges column. As usual, the classic line comes from his now-97 year old mother. He writes about Hillebrand’s, “While visiting her grandchildren in Broad Channel she was always intrigued with the funeral home’s corner building on E14th with the big “Dead End” sign on the corner. Every time she passed it she would remark, “Now that’s truth in advertising.” *** Another columnist, Alex Karinsky, deserves some kudos. His story on the boogie board ban was the most viewed story ever on rockawaytimes. com topping the Anthony Weiner story about him looking to open a kitchen in Rockaway. We got comments on the boogie board ban from far and wide, including Australia. *** There is a primary race on Tuesday. State Senator James Sanders faces a challenger, Everly Brown of Rosedale. Brown’s campaign website says he is an active member in the

Rosedale community, not much else. *** A man remains missing after going in the water at Beach 9th Street late Sunday night. It was dark and the ocean was rough causing some to speculate that it was suicide attempt. *** The Gulf Station which closed in the middle of the night a few weeks ago will reopen. Don’t look for the Subway sandwich shop or Krispy Kremes. They won’t be back. At least not yet. *** When visitors head home late at night or early morning they are often surprised to see so many people on bicycles. The Rockaway bars – from the Sugar Bowl to the Rockaway Beach Club – have full bike racks almost every summer night. Made us wonder if Rockaway is unique in this way. Where else is there a 5 mile span where bikes are used for bar hopping? *** September is chock full of things to do. The 10th Annual Richie Allen

Memorial Surf Classic is Saturday, September 7th at Beach 97th Street in front of the concessions. Signup is at 8 a.m. for surfers entering the contest. The “paddle out” to remember Richie who gave his life on 9/11 takes place at 3 p.m. The day is not just for surfers. It’s magnet for seeing old friends and making new ones. *** Restaurant Row on the Boulevard looks to be blossoming further. A coffee shop, Rockaway Roasters, is opening and a sign for a Chinese Restaurant (a sit down place) is posted in a window off Beach 92nd Street. *** Ferry advocates have been amazing. We’re foolishly optimistic enough to believe the ferry will get extended somehow. But what’s with Seastreak the company that runs the ferry? They do a great job on the water but they could have done some advocating as well. They never even put up a sign at Beach 108th Street. Never put up a sign at Pier 11 either. Can’t understand why Seastreak did its best to keep the ferry a secret.

*** The de Blasio administration issued a press release about its great progress with Build It Back. Many other elected officials were quoted offering their praise. But not Phil Goldfeder. In a separate article, our assemblyman said “There are over 7,000 Build it Back applications throughout my assembly district and if (all we’re at) is 500 that doesn’t even scratch the surface of helping enough families recover,” he said. *** A couple of new additions are in this week’s Rockaway Times Sharon Fein-Feldman is the first to offer a Recipe Swap. Want to swap? Send yours to news@rockawaytimes.com. And we’ve got a Rockaway Word Search. Can you find the secret name we’ve hidden? *** Art and Surf get ink but what about music in Rockaway? Bike Riders Advisory

Dear Editor: The Bloomberg administration, in its misguided quest to increase bicycle access in NYC, made Rockaway’s main roads one lane in each direction. This increased traffic issues in Rockaway and also, given the City’s snail-like response to rebuilding boardwalks, forced bikes and cars to share the same road. This is a recipe for disaster. I was driving east on Beach road, the Arverne-by-the-sea extension of SFP about 2 months ago when a bicycle rider, ear phones in place, turned left onto Bch 67 St directly in my path. That I missed him is a miracle. He was totally oblivious to my presence. Every day I see young people riding bikes while texting or chatting and again are oblivious to their situation. Parents of these youngsters need to impress upon

them the need to be aware of their environment. Idle chatter can wait. It is not worth your life. Peter Galvin

of course, thanks also to all of the other ferry activists mentioned, whose involvement in this issue predates our own, including Linda and Danny, and Joe, and to all of the pubic officials who have also showed their support. Dear Editor: They say “you can’t fight City Fellow ferry riders all you need Hall” - but we sure as hell are goto do to keep the ferry service op- ing to try. erating is call the great Reverend KEEP CALM - AND FERRY ON! Al. Our alleged Mayor is really Paul Deckelman Big Al’s genie and grants him all his wishes. Poof, the ferry stays in Rockaway. no political clout or they are very ineffective. Or maybe it’s all bull. I think they are allowed to look as if they are at odds with the mayor yet, are not allowed to seek payback. By that I mean withdrawing their support for programs he wants. Fighting on issues that are important to him, making public statements about his failures. They need to call in their political chips. Did any of them tell him they would not support his reelection, not support his needs in Albany? They will continue to do what they are told by the powers that be in this one party state. This very much reminds me of when every democrat in NYC voted to eliminate the NYC commuter tax and did so. Why ? Because if they didn’t do as they are told, they would come home with empty bags. Voting Booths Will Be Open Next Tuesday is Primary Day at the election booths. Sadly, there won’t be a challenger for Michele Titus or Absent-titus as she’s sometimes called. The assemblywoman who is supposed to represent a good chunk of the east end earns the absent tag because she is a rare sight other than when it’s election. That’s when she calls upon the Queens democratic machine to grease the way for her return to Albany. Her no-show policy was particularly egregious in the months after Sandy when so many people were in need of representation. Felicia Johnson of Community Board 14 attempted a grassroots, zero budget battle but was knocked off the ballot after signatures were challenged by the Titus team. Besides that legal deftness, Titus has demonstrated one thing – that term limits are needed on the state level. It’s true that voters or non-voters get what they deserve but incumbents such as Titus enjoy too much of an advantage. Once in office they become entrenched. They can spend more time and effort on currying favors, engaging in patronage and building coalitions that make challenges rare and usually futile. The system is rigged. Getting on a ballot and raising significant funds to mount a credible campaign is harder than ever. Michele Titus will win in November but the rest of us will lose. State Senator James Sanders is getting a challenge from Everly Brown of Rosedale. Sanders is rather opposite of Titus as he is a regular at local events and meetings. He’s approachable and responsive. We don’t know Everly Brown and we

doubt he knows Rockaway. And if you don’t know Rockaway you don’t get a vote. Statewide Andrew Cuomo is getting a challenge from Zephyr Teachout. Cuomo is the guy who put the toll back on the bridge a month after Sandy. Cuomo is the governor who didn’t set foot in our disaster area after November 21, 2012. He said Breezy Point would be better than ever in a year. It took him almost two years two announce that federal funds were available to “support technical and feasibility analyses” for flood protection. That’s another way of saying there’s money for a study. Another study. And, of course, Cuomo disbanded the Moreland Commission which was established to investigate corruption on the state level. Makes us wonder. We can’t encourage anyone to vote for Cuomo.

gers at management. They say their living conditions are dangerous and potentially hazardous to their health. The five buildings that make up the Dayton Beach Park co-ops comprise 1,144 units and span 10 blocks. The co-op, which just marked 50 years in operation, is part of the city’s Mitchell-Lama program, which provides affordable housing to middle-income families. The 98 developments that are part of the program usually have very long waiting lists. The developments are supervised by the state and by the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development as well as the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. Residents of Dayton Beach Park, who asked to remain anonymous, say there are no longer security guards present in the buildings. And some of the exit doors in the buildings do not lock, also a security concern for residents. These are issues that have been going on for years, they said. One building recently suffered two fires within eight days, according to residents. Although the fires were selfcontained, other apartments and the hallways suffered smoke and water damage, they said. “It’s like living in a tenement,” one resident said. There is exposed wiring throughout the buildings. Hurricane Irene left cracks in the walls, according to residents. Never repaired, those cracks have continued to grow, especially after Hurricane Sandy. Another complaint is that management chooses to focus on nonessential, luxury amenities – a brand new barbecue pit, for exam-

ple – rather than necessities, such as a functioning laundry room. Several of the laundry rooms have recently reopened, after being closed for about five months. The pool has not been usable for several years as well and residents say it has become a hotbed for mosquitoes. A temporary boiler that had been installed has sat for several months and does not work reliably, they said. Finally, residents say they have not been receiving their financial statements, leaving them in the dark about the financial status of the co-op. Tenants are unsure of how to handle the situation because they fear repercussions from management and the board, they said. Some have considered suing the co-op, but that would essentially mean suing themselves. A spokesperson for First Service Residential, the company that manages the property, said she was not given authorization to comment on the situation by Jennifer Grady, the co-op board’s president. When reached by telephone, Grady hung up the phone and later declined to comment when contacted via text message.

Rockaway By Fabiola H. Arellano

Dog Fun is Just Beginning The summer has officially ended, but for the furry residents of the Rockaways, the fun is just beginning. Hans, my chocolate Labrador retriever and best friend of six years, is thrilled that Labor Day weekend has passed. Hans loves to swim in the ocean, and enthusiastically retrieves his favorite yellow doggie frisbee over and over without tiring. But because dogs are banned from the beach during the summer, he spends his summer days indoors and bored. Hans, loves to swim every day, and doesn’t understand why once the weather starts getting nice I stop taking him to the beach. During the summer months I tried exercising him by running with him, but the heat, humidity, and his thick heavy fur caused him to overheat. I tried taking him for a walk on what’s left of our boardwalk, but I was approached by two police officers and told that Hans is not allowed on the boardwalk.

Unless I get up very early in the morning (hard after a fun summer party) to take him to the beach to swim, before the parks enforcement chases us down with their motor scooters, and threatens us with tickets, Hans gets no exercise. I wonder, why can’t the Rockaways have a small separate section where dogs are allowed to enjoy the beach and the cool water during the hot summer months? They are residents of the Rockaways and live here all year long, they don’t just come to visit during the summer. They should not be banned from the water during the

hottest months of the year. Why can’t we be like Chicago; they have Montrose dog beach, a separate fenced section where you can pay/ donate one dollar and take your dog off leash to the beach on Lake Michigan. I went to Montrose a few years ago, and the beach was clean, vibrant, and bursting with energy. I saw all breeds, and sizes running around doing what dogs love to do, play. I had more fun at the beach with Hans, that day in Chicago, then all the times I have gone to the beach alone or with friends.

Civics Corner By Hank Iori

View From Belle Harbor (and the ferry)

The Rockaway Ferry Rocks!! The Belle Harbor Property Owners Association’s meeting on August 28th aboard the Rockaway Ferry was a resounding success. All agreed that the ferry service is an essential part of the overall economic revitalization plan for Rockaway. Our city is one that has never stood still and is continually redefining itself. The Rockaway Riviera has tremendous potential to become a great tourist attraction and contribute to the economic engine of our city. Expanding ferry service from Kennedy Airport to a ferry terminal/hub in the Rocka-

ways and ultimately to Manhattan would increase ferry ridership. The challenge, as a community, is how we get our city leaders to share this vision with us and develop a working relationship to making this a reality. We are urging that the civic associations across the Rockaways join us on September 18th at Beach 108th street at 4:30PM to ride the ferry and stand up in support of making the ferry a permanent transportation option for our community. We are one Rockaway!

sions like Caracas, Low Tide Bar and Rippers, have given bands even more opportunities to share their talents. When asked about their favorite local bands, many of those business owners mentioned Indaculture. Indaculture may be comprised of relatively young musicians from Rockaway and Breezy Point, but according to guitarist and vocalist Danny Mulvanerty, they’ve been around for about 14 years. Whether they’re playing at Connolly’s or the concessions, Indaculture often draws a large crowd, which Mulvanerty says they’ve been able to do because they give the crowd what they want. “We adapt to the crowd. We can tell how the crowd is reacting to us and so we try to play off of that.” Indaculture plays a range of originals and puts twists on songs that they Continued on page 26

We’re like their grandfathers and the other bands treat us like that. It’s really cool.” “Live music has grown over the last couple of years. Anywhere on a Friday or Saturday night, especially in the summer, there’s always three or four bands playing around and that’s cool. That’s a testament to the owners that have created the space down here where we can create music,” Matty Lyons of the popular Americana band, BreezyGrass said. Community to Mark 13th Anniversary of 9/11 Attacks day, Sept. 11. It begins at 8:30 a.m. and will last two hours, marking the times at which American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the towers and when the towers fell. A second ceremony will take place in the evening at 6:30 p.m. The names of each Rockaway resident lost will be read at both events. Dolores Orr, the chair of Community Board 14, said the memorial is an opportunity for the community to come together. It’s also

a way for families who lost loved ones to see that their community still supports them. “It’s a day we should never forget,” she said. “The park pays tribute and it gives us that reminder. It’s a place for peace and reflection.” The location of the 9/11 Tribute Park was chosen because it was the spot at which many individuals watched the scene unfold, as it provides a clear view of lower Manhattan. People have continued to congregate at the site every year, and it was transformed into a

park in 2005. Bernie Warnock, the president of the Friends of Tribute Park, said the ceremony is significant for two reasons: because so many people, including firefighters and civilians, were lost and because Rockaway offered a clear view of the tragedy. “The fact that we could see the World Trade Center collapse, it’s an intricate part of Rockaway,” he said. “We can’t forget it. By Bianca Fortis Nearly 13 years ago, residents from throughout the Rockaway peninsula gathered along the bay wall as they watched in horror as the Twin Towers came crashing down. And every year since then, residents have gathered on the anniversary of September 11 to commemorate the dozens of Rockaway individuals who perished that day. This year the September 11 Memorial Ceremony will take place at the Rockaway Tribute Park on Thurs-

Another beautiful summer in Rockapulco! My first column was written Memorial Day Weekend, opening day of the beaches. This past week we just closed the beaches Labor Day Weekend and here I am writing again. It has been a long, beautiful summer with so many great beach days. There were dolphins in the beginning of the summer and they are back giving us a show once again. They are so beautiful. Yes, it is always sad to say goodbye to our relaxing days on the beach. School can be a real bummer for some. Not the college kids, they will continue to have lots of fun between classes. My two sons are off again and yes I am so thankful they are back at college. It was a long summer in my house with three teenage children living the good life.

I remember well. God bless my Mom and Dad. We have so much to be thankful for in our lives. There are a few things going viral on Facebook, one being the ice bucket challenge to raise money for ALS. It has been great. I thought I escaped but my sister Margaret just challenged me so I will be participating later on today. Another great challenge, the positive thought, for 5 or 7 days you write down 3 things you are grateful for in your life. Yes, I was tagged on this one too. I normally try to stay away from these things but I felt I had to do the right thing. Well it turns out having to write three grateful thoughts every day makes you feel really good. Some of us are so blessed to have all that we have, I am so grateful for all the people in my life, family, friends,

Nancy J. Brady, R.N., Esq. Linda Faith Marshak, Esq. Alexander Sam Bader, Esq. Dierdre Maeve Baker, Esq.

community, etc. So if you are feeling sorry for yourself, stop and think of 3 things you are grateful for. You will most certainly have more than three. Positive thinking has been proven to improve one’s health. Replace the negative with a positive. You will be a ball of positive energy. Help people to realize all that they have. Happiness is a quality that exists in each and every one of us. Complaining doesn’t do anything but turn people away. If you are not happy then change the situation you are in. Perhaps you are unable to get out of a situation then you must use your tools. Yes, you

have to take a few deep breaths, let go of what is bringing you down and start fresh. Don’t let the negative thoughts take up room in your head. Be happy now. Smile and think of something in your life you are grateful for. There has to be one thing if not many. I am so thankful for this beautiful summer, thankful to teach yoga to the masses on 108th Street beach every summer for the Parks Department and so very grateful to Mrs. Elaine’s Dance Studio for sharing their beautiful space with me to teach yoga in the Rockaways, my home sweet home. Can you take the positive thought challenge?

The demanding “INDOC” training prepares the new recruit for life in the Maritime Regiment and aboard the school’s training Ship for those in the license program. Welcome home to Sophia DeVirgilio and her daughter Louise of W12thRd. The Broad Channel mother-daughter team just returned from visiting family in Greece. Sophia said she spent many a happy afternoon visiting the myriad Greek caféneons on the Islands of Crete and Lesbos imbibing ouzo and noshing on mezedes. Personally I think there was more imbibing than noshing as Sophia is still raving about the one afternoon she met and spent the afternoon with the famous Greek actor and star of Zorba the Greek, Anthony Quinn. I didn’t have the heart to tell her that Quinn, born in Mexico in 1915 to parents of Mexican/Irish descent became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1947 and passed away back in 2001. Dr. Kathleen “Kit” Uvino, PhD, one of Broad Channel’s own, who recently finished up her summer scientific research work at her base camp in Churchill, Canada has been awarded a professorship at the University of Jamestown in North Dakota where she is teaching biology. Kit still maintains her primary summer residence here in Broad Channel and I think she will need it after wintering over the school year in North Dakota where the average winter temperatures range from a high of 19 degrees (F) to a low of 0 degrees (F). My youngest daughter, Vickie, has wanted to get a tattoo since she was 13 years old. The rule was “no ink until you turn 18!” Vicki promised to abide by the rule as long as I promised to get a tattoo when she got hers after she turned 18 and, God forgive me, I agreed. That was 5 years ago. Vickie, now 18, sports Peter Pan’s visage on her leg and reminds me every day “C’mon Dad, you always said a promise made is a promise kept!” I told her I need some time to think about a tattoo that won’t cause the staff at Hillerbrand’s Broad Channel Funeral Home to suffer laughing fits when they host the final appearance of my farewell tour of life. After much thought, I am leaning toward a simple script on my arm which says…”If found, drop in any mailbox.” Speaking of our local funeral home, when my father passed away in 2003, my mother, who was in her 80’s at the time, had him waked out of Hillerbrand’s. While visiting her grandchildren in Broad Channel she was always intrigued with the funeral home’s corner building on E14th with the big “Dead End” sign on the corner. Every time she passed it she would remark, “Now that’s truth in advertising!” Thus far this season, three named tropical storms (Arthur, Bertha and Cristobal) have all strengthened to Category 1 hurricanes while moving up the east coast but, thankfully, they all tracked far enough offshore to avoid any significant impact to our Broad Channel area. Keep in mind that the 2014 hurricane season doesn’t officially end until November 30th. Of course, then, on December 1st, we can all start looking forward to winter nor’easters! A Powerfully Felt Need To Know By Leo J. Fahey Formal education, I said last column, must be personalized rather than uniform. Such schooling relies on Intrinsic Motivationa powerfully felt need to know-to drive learning. The following autobiographical story demonstrates, although I could have selected any of a great number from my classrooms. I love the water! I love it in a swimming pool, a river, a lake, a

bay, an ocean. When a child, my mother had to sternly advise me to get out of the bathtub less my pruned skin stay that way. My favorite picture books were on water craft, especially on “the helper boats”: tug boats, barges and the like. My life-long friend and I played tugboat in the kiddy pool of St. Finbar’s Day Nursery School through many hours. A dutiful son and student, I went along with what I was told to do in

elementary school but was much unsettled, until I got into the water at the Ninth Street YMCA, first with my father supervising and later in swim classes. Then, at age thirteen at Camp Alvernia, Centerport, L.I., Brother Andrea introduced me to scuba diving. It was love at first underwater breath: whatever I was to do in life should be done underwater. In the fall of that year, as a freshman at LaSalle Academy, I could only tolerate the school subjects, consequently earning mediocre grades. However, I sank myself into the college level study of gas laws, buoyancy, water pressure, human biochemistry and physiology underwater, etc., as I trained in scuba skills. Underwater passion during the high school years led me to a membership in the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, the nomination to Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy and the acceptance into SUNY Maritime College. I was not yet the academic I would become, and my underwater passions were unavailable at Maritime, so while I did marginally well in Seamanship and Naval Science, I bombed in all the scholarly classes. The mediocrity in academics and the self-destruction at Maritime College and not working underwater until 1994 (as an instructor) haunts me even today. The point: Healthy personal

The Rockaway Times and academic growth from pre-k though graduate school emerges within each youngster according to his/her Intrinsic Motivation to learn and not from the pressure, force or coercion of parents, teachers, national, state, district or school officials or by the structure of schooling itself. Under parental, teacher and school demands to continually comply with uniform academic requirements excluding my passions denying any intrinsic motivation toward almost all study, I continued to be a mediocre student finally self-destructing during my first year at college and struggling from then on to work through the self-loathing generated by these deep disappointments. The powerfully felt need to know of a personalized approach draws students toward individually attractive aspects of knowledge without the unintended negative psychological impacts of forced learning. And in the 21st century and beyond mentally healthy citizens are needed to leverage their good health in which ever way they discern is in their best interest and in the best interest of family, community, country and civilization. Rockaway Lifts Up Its Own By Bianca Fortis An outpouring of love and support from the Rockaway community has left one local family believing in miracles. Kristine Caruso, 22, will have a brand new wheelchair lift installed in her home after a gofundme.com compaign was successful. At the age of 17, Kristine was diagnosed with Spinocerebellar Ataxia II, a rare genetic, progressive disease that is associated with decreased coordination. Symptoms include trouble with balance and difficulty walking and slurred speech. Kristine’s brother Joseph, 25, has also been diagnosed with the disease, but his symptoms haven’t progressed as far. Recently Kristine, her mother Linda Caruso and her friend Vanessa Ramos, had a conversation about the success of the Ice Bucket Challenge, an activity that involves dumping a bucket of ice water on one’s head to promote awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The challenge had gone viral on the internet last month and helped raise more than $100 million for the ALS Association. They were amazed by the way people around the world had connected over the internet. “I’m kind of shy on Facebook, but I like social media because you can reach the masses,” Linda said. That conversation led to Ramos, 21, starting a campaign on gofundme.com to raise money to install a wheelchair lift. When she was first diagnosed, Kristine only walked off balance, but because the disease is progressive, she now uses a walker or wheelchair to move around. Kristine lives in the basement of the house, which was built out into a complete apartment so she could maintain some of the independence she lost when she had to leave school because of the disease. Climbing down the stairs of the family’s home is difficult, and even dangerous for her, necessitating the wheelchair lift. After a few hours, the online campaign had raised $2,000. The campaign reached its goal of $10,000 within four days. And as of Wednesday night this week, it had reached $11,420. The family and Caruso were stunned. “For anybody not to believe in miracles, you have to be crazy,” Linda said. “God doesn’t always give you what you want, but what you need.” Both Caruso and Linda attribute the success of the campaign to Kristine herself. Many individuals diagnosed with the disease also

Kristine Caruso, center, sits with friend Vanessa Ramos, left, and her mother, Linda Caruso. suffer from depression because of it. But that’s not the case with Kristine. Linda said Kristine has such a bubbly personality because she likes people. “She makes them feel special about themselves,” she said. Ramos said Kristine always has a smile and is very outgoing. “Five minutes of talking to her makes you never want to complain about anything again,” Ramos said. Kristine said she has always been outgoing and that she won’t let the disease stop her from living life the way she wants to. “Would I rather live life to the fullest or be a hermit?” she said. Kristine’s doctor says that the reason the disease isn’t well known or funded is because no one famous has been diagnosed with it, according to Linda. There are more local fundraisers planned for Kristine as well as to support research for finding a cure for the disease. “Obviously none of us are famous, so we’re going to have to do something ourselves,” Linda said. The campaign for Kristine is online at http://www.gofundme. com/df1f74.

cover, such as their song “Rockaway State of Mind.” Another local favorite is Solshyne. The five-piece Rockaway band has gained a big following in their six years together due to their covers of classic rock hits. Business owners called Solshyne “professional” and “good at what they do.” For bass player Dan Klohe, playing live is a spiritual experience. “We clearly do this for the love of playing music. We all click musically. It’s like you’re in another world and you’re talking through your instruments and then you look out and see fans dancing and singing to the music. It’s for those moments,” Klohe said. Rockaway’s 3 Sheets to the Wind has been playing classic rock and blues for 11 years. For Rockaway

Park resident Tim Farrell, who sings and plays bass, one of the best parts of being a musician in Rockaway is the beach. “Playing out on the beach on a beautiful night with all of my friends is a rush. It doesn’t get any better than that. I live for it.” Michael Powers, building manager of the Beach 97th St concession, says Farrell’s energy shines through when he performs. “It’s like when you first start a band and rock and roll feels like it does when you’re a kid. Tim still carries that enthusiasm. He’s having the most fun up there.” Caracas owner Maribel Araujo’s personal favorite is Squid, led by Rockaway Beach resident, Guy Nevirs. Squid can range from a solo act to a group of 10 musicians depending on who is free for a gig. “I

have a rolodex of musicians,” Nevirs said. Depending on which musicians are available, Squid has a range from acoustic performances to a “funky New Orleans sound” or “rock that has a little funk to it,” Nevirs added. Another favorite at the concessions is newcomer Bad Sign. The three piece classic rock and blues band started playing three years ago and has made their name known at Caracas and Low Tide, which is a convenient commute for bass player and Rockaway Beach resident Mike Stefanello. “When we play at Caracas, we have a more laid back vibe and when we’re at Low Tide we do a little more rock,” Stefanello said. For him, the boardwalk music scene is ideal. “How can you beat standing on the boardwalk, playing music in Rockaway?” The Grayriders are often found opening for fundraisers, which is not surprising considering they stem from the local nonprofit group, the Graybeards. However the rock and roll band with eight official members has played in just about every bar in Rockaway and Breezy Point and they bring in a big crowd wherever they go. Sean Sheridan, owner of the Bayhouse in Breezy Point, recognized some of the most popular bands around the tip of the peninsula, like BreezyGrass. This four piece band has been playing for six years together after meeting at a Rockaway Artist Alliance open mic event. With members from Breezy Point, Broad Channel, Rockaway and Brooklyn, BreezyGrass has quickly developed a following all around the area with their unique sound that incorporates less known instruments like the mandolin and the upright bass. Together, they play original music and covers ranging from country to folk to bluegrass and rock. Some other Breezy Point favor-

ites like Hell or High Water and the Kerry Kearney band have gained more widespread fame. Kerry Kearney, of Breezy Point, has been playing with his band for about 25 years. Together they’ve played international venues and have toured with the Allman brothers, but Kearney doesn’t forget about his hometown and can be found playing blues around Rockaway and Breezy Point, including at last weekend’s Mardi Gras. Also playing for 25 years, the Americana band Hell or High Water has gained popularity all across New York City, but they can often be found rocking out at the Bayhouse in Breezy Point, where some of the band members are from. With members coming from Broad Channel, bands such as Rattrap Bumpkin and Grim Pickens have made their names known on both sides of the bridge in recent years with their unique sounds. Rattrap Bumpkin describes their sound as surf punk blues, but others say it’s more like “pirate music,” which is appropriate considering they often play on the Dragonboat, the artsy watercraft owned by Geoff Rawling. Grim Pickens has drawn in fans with their hip hop, rap and rock music and often play at large music festivals such as Rockstock and Barrels and the Two Bridges Music Festival. Whether in Rockaway, Broad Channel or Breezy Point, live music is no longer hard to come by and the local music scene continues to grow with new artists making their debut at locals bars and open mics. Lyons of BreezyGrass says he’s honored to be a part of such a scene. “This is a warm, welcoming community of people that love music and that’s a great situation to be a part of. It’s a very simple thing. We play, the community loves it and everyone has a good time.”

It Was A Happy Labor Day bays. This observation was made by our Rockaway Times contributor “Bernie Matzen.” Bernie lives on the water and studies the subtle environmental changes that affect fishing and the bay. We then pass that information on to you. You can use this information for fishing (or mention it around the water cooler the next day at work so it sounds like you’re really smart). The fluke fishing is still producing fish, and yes there still are many short fish that are caught but, due to the weather this weekend, not too many people got out fishing.

end between rain drops and it did pay off. Bernie went out fishing for fluke with Eric Albreck, and his son “Kenny” (8 yrs old). Drifting “Deb’s Inlet” west of the Atlantic beach bridge, the trio managed to still find some nice sized fluke for dinner. They were using “Berkley” B- 20th St.: Gulp lures and a spearing/squid Bernie Matzen did manage to combo. Bernie said that they were get out for a little while this week- catching more fish with the bait

(spearing squid combo.) than the lures. The guys caught three nice fluke drifting near the Atlantic beach bridge. The fluke were measured at 22” (Bernie’), 19” (Kenny), and 19” (Eric). We’d like to wish “Pauly T.” ( R.T. fishing report contributor ) a speedy recovery. Paul injured his right shoulder and can’t go fishing on his boat.

It looks like summer has returned with the hot and humid weather that we had been without all of July and August of this year. Saturday was threatening showers in the afternoon. Sunday was a wash with everything from “spotty” showers to full blow downpours depending on where you live (more severe weather north and west of NYC). The fluke fishing is still “off the hook,” literally ! Amazingly the fluke still are hanging around in the back bays. This is extraordinary as the bait fish just keep hanging around. One of the reasons that the bite is still on is because, the bait fish were (and still are) very small this year in the back

Matt Damon’s noteworthy performance of a seemingly relatable post grad student turned poker pro, gave a young accountant named Chris Moneymaker the push to accomplish what “only happens in the movies.” In what has been called “The Moneymaker Effect”, his win at the World Series of Poker put the game

of Texas Hold’em on the map and the movie ‘Rounders’ started it all. Since his win, no “professional” has ever won the WSOP. Much to the chagrin of pros like Phil Helmuth, who berate amateurs for their style of play, the game itself would not attain the popularity without an ordinary person such as Moneymaker accomplishing this feat. The Rockaway Times

It’s That Time Of Year Even though our beach season got off to an extremely ROCKY start, I have to say this has probably been the best summer I’ve ever had living here on the Rockaway Peninsula in all of my 51 years! The weather was fine, the wa-

ter was fine and the food was fine. It seems like every weekend had perfect weather, or at least started or ended that way. I especially don’t recall a summer where we had little to no jellyfish or seaweed issues, but this summer for some reason it was like the water

was always perfect. Since I live in the heart of Rockaway Beach, I am surrounded by some of the best places to eat on the peninsula. Even the beach and “Boardwalk“ got a boost! After months of delays over this past winter even Weeks Marine was able to finish up the sand replenishment on the most frequently used sections of our beaches. They gave us nice wide beaches to enjoy for a better part of the summer. Now our “boardwalk” is in full swing with the pile driving for the new concrete walk is completed for phase one (B86B98). Most of the “H” piles for the sand retaining walls have been driven in for first phase as well. Things are moving along nicely, slowly, but nicely! It still boggles my mind why each phase is not being done simultaneously.

In the past, I have mentioned meetings. As we all know there is a meeting for this and a meeting for that. Well, it’s that time of year again! September begins the first Community Board 14 meeting of the season and many civic association meetings will be starting up again as well. I suggest if you have one question, one concern or even one suggestion that you come down and have your voice heard at any one of these meetings. Remember if you give up your right to be heard, you give up your right to complain! September’s Community Board14 meeting will be held on September 9th at The Knight of Columbus Hall at 333 Beach 90th street Rockaway Beach, At 7:15 pm. Get there early to sign up for public speaking.

Emergency Care in the Rockaways: Traffic Light Preemption Could Save Lives

By Dennis Graham PhD RN NP & Catherine Graham RN MSN Many lives could be saved in the Rockaways and Broad Channel if ambulances and fire vehicles had traffic light preemption devices installed. These devices would allow emergency vehicles to change traffic lights red to green shortening the time to transport critically injured and heart attach victims to the nearest hospital. The closure of Peninsula Hospital in 2012 left the Rockaways with only one hospital that does not have advanced trauma care or emergency interventional cardiac catheter care. The NYC Mortality 2010 data reported the Rockaways had the highest cardiac death rate in NYC of 398/100,000 as compared to 138/100,000 in Queens Village. Advanced emergency care is best provided by Level I Trauma Centers (LITC) and by hospitals with emergency interventional cardiac care. For Rockaway and Broad Channel residents the nearest LITC or emergency heart attach treatment is in Jamaica Hospital. The Center Studying Health Care Delivery (CSHD) research found that average time for Rockaway residents to get to Jamaica Hospital is 45-55 minutes in rush hour traffic and 25-30 minutes at other times. For serious trauma cases and patients with life threatening heart attach symptoms they need immediate treatment within 60-90 minutes. To improve access, the CSHD proposes a pilot project for the Rockaways that each ambulance would have a GPS device (phone or tablet) that would when approaching an intersection turn red light green for EMS Level 1-2 priority patients. Our proposed traffic light preemption system would work using the updated traffic light control devices already installed by the Department of Transportation (DOT) after Hurricane Sandy covering the Rockaway Peninsula Crossbay Boulevard to the Belt Parkway. The remaining traffic light control devices would need to be updated to the shortest route to Jamaica Hospital. CSHD has reported this lack of ready access to standard emergency care for this com-

munity in local newspapers, at national public fice have all been supportive of this proposed Travel Time in Minutes to Jamaica and Brookdale Hospital LITC health meetings and with every elected leader initiative. for Rockaway Areas during Rushof Hour The future healthcare in the Rockaways for this community. We have met with the CEO

of St John’s Episcopal who told use that LITC was not possible because of expense and the attempt to get interventional cardiac catheter care appears to be stalled. The CSHD is seeking support from the NYC Department of Transportation to develop a pilot project to implement traffic light preemption for the Rockaways and Broad Channel. Much of the 14 miles to Jamaica Hospital is already capable of having a traffic light preemption system implemented. Eric Ulrich and his staff has set up a meeting with the DOT in September and Phil Goldfeder, Joe Addabbo, Michelle Titus and the Borough Presidents Of-

A community of 125,000 people that has no advanced emergency or emergency interventional cardiac care available needs more than traffic light preemption to insure the health of the residents of Rockaway and Broad channel. “Where you live should not determine whether you live.” *Center of Studying Healthcare Delivery is a Rockaway based heath policy and research group working to improve the delivery of health care for all New Yorkers. e-mail: HCDtechnology@gmail.com

Mobile Boutique Rolls Through Town By Bianca Fortis

and decided to pursue the idea for the boutique, they said. “Once we got the truck we thought, ‘Well, this is really going to happen,’” Waytowich said. As the two explain on their website, the name of the store comes from Rockaway Beach being located at the end of the A Train subway line. “Some may say it’s actually the beginning, but that all depends on your destination, doesn’t it?” they write. They themselves painted the outside of the truck its lavender purple color and designed its interior, which McKiernan described as being like “someone’s walk-in closet.” “It’s nice – sometimes people

just want to hang out in here,” she said. McKiernan worked at a wholesale accessories company in Manhattan where, she said, she sat in a cubicle all day and had no view of the outside. “So to have the view of the ocean now on a daily basis, I could cry,” she said. “Life is good.” They opened for business during Memorial Day weekend. Now they are usually out from Wednesday through Sunday, from about 12 to 6 p.m. Once they pick a location, they send out alerts through their social media pages. While they could have just opened up an online store, Waytowich said she likes the human

interaction that having an actual store affords her. “It’s nice to be out and talk to everyone and see everybody,” she said. Now the duo is working on their post-summer plans for the store. They have plans to sell at the LIC flea and Hester Street in the fall. They’re also hoping to open up a pop-up shop during the wintertime. But they’re looking forward to next summer when they’ll be back on the streets of Rockaway. “I’ve had such a great summer and I don’t want it to end,” Waytowich said. For more information about End of the A, and to find out where they’re located, visit http://www. endofthea.com.

Two Rockaway natives have found a new way to roll through town in style. This summer Beth Waytowich and Tara McKiernan opened up their shop, End of the A, which offers clothing, accessories and beauty products. All contained within a truck. McKiernan, who has a background in fashion merchandising, had wanted to open up her own boutique – there very few places to shop for clothing on the peninsula, she said – but opening up an actual brick and mortar store was out of her budget. That’s when the idea of a starting mobile boutique popped into her head. It was about a year ago when she reached out to Waytowich, with whom she’d been friends since their freshman year of high school, and approached her with the idea. Waytowich was immediately on board, and the two, both 30, got to work on a business plan. Over the course of the winter they spotted the truck, previously owned by a pool cleaning and maintenance company, which was for sale in Howard Beach. Once they determined it was in good shape, they got a good deal for it
