A New Home for the New Year By Barbara Daniels

We’ve all heard there is no place like home for the holidays. Late last year, after waiting and praying for ten years, I finally got to spend the holidays in a safe, warm home in the Rockaways. But for many seniors like me, housing is not a given. The conversation around New York’s housing crisis is making many headlines lately, and with good reason. I know from personal experience how being without a home impacts one’s personal dignity, health and family life. I am 75 years old and a mother of five children. I retired in 2003 after working for the Board of Education for over 35 years. I have beat cancer twice. Suddenly, I had to apply for Section 8, which was not where I expected to be at that stage of my life. Finding the right home when you’re older is difficult. Seniors like me want to live independently as much as possible.

We want to be in a community that’s friendly, safe and engaging. We want a place that is warm in the winter. And we want some level of security against natural disasters. For 35 years, I lived in Arverne. In 2007, after my children moved out, I moved into a small one-bedroom apartment where the heat ran on electricity and was very costly. I was on the ground floor and lost everything when Hurricane Sandy hit, except for my hope and faith.

Late last year, things took a turn for the better. I moved into a spacious apartment at Beach Channel Senior Residence in Far Rockaway. When the leasing office team took me up to the apartment for the first time, the door opened, and I was full of joy. My apartment has a wellequipped kitchen, which is extremely convenient for people my age, who don’t always have the strength to work with outdated kitchenware. When the weather gets cold, I just have to

Learn About Property Tax Exemptions and Utility Bill Reduction You might have a chance to save some money on your property taxes or utility bills, and Senator James Sanders’ office is here to help. On Friday, January 18, Sanders will be hosting part three of a four-part event series to provide his constituents with property tax exemptions and utility bill reduction assistance. The event will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Batallion Pentecostal Assembly Inc., (454 Beach 67th Street) in Arverne. There will be several offices and agencies on hand to explain how you can save. The Department of Finance will be enrolling homeowners in the property tax exemption program (households save over $300). The Office of the

NYS Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli will offer unclaimed funds lookup services and the ability to register for refunds. The Department of Environmental Protection will assist with delinquent water bills and educate homeowners on how to conserve water. Neighborhood Housing Services of Jamaica will counsel and assist homeowners with lean sale and foreclosure issues. Margert Community Corporation will assist homeowners and tenants with application for conserving gas and heat in household (lowers utility bills), plus more. As this is expected to be a popular event, everyone must RSVP by calling Senator Sanders’ office at 718-5233069 or 718-327-7017.

push a button. No painful electricity bills just for heating my home. With many security cameras throughout the building, I feel constantly protected. And given my unfortunate experience with Sandy, the building’s storm-resilient measures make all the difference in the world. I feel safe and independent, in a community I love. I have a beautiful apartment that I can call home in the same neighborhood where I raised my children. And most importantly, I can invite my grandchildren and the rest of the family over, not just for the holidays but all year long. A special thanks to caring people like Council Member Donovan Richards, a champion for affordable housing, city leaders who helped fund this project, and the Arker Companies, who built Beach Channel Senior Residence and tailored its units to the needs of vulnerable seniors. I pray that all seniors who struggle to find a home someday receive the same life-changing gift.

COMMUNITY BOARD APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN Want to have more of a say in what goes on in your community? Now is your chance to apply to be a member on Community Board 14. Queens Borough President Melinda Katz is accepting applications from qualified and civic-minded individuals who are interested in serving on Community Boards across the borough. Community Boards play an important advisory role in considering land use and zoning matters in their respective districts. The Boards also hold hearings and issue recommendations about the city budget, municipal service delivery and numerous other matters that impact their communities. “Our borough is stronger when residents from across Queens who care deeply about their neighborhood make their voices heard by joining their local community board,” said Borough President Katz. “Serving on a community board can be demanding in both time and energy, but our government is more effective and account-

able when it can draw upon the knowledge and expertise of active, engaged community members.” The Community Board membership application is available online at www.queensbp.org/ community-boards. The deadline for prospective and current Community Board members to submit completed, signed and notarized applications to the Borough President’s office is Friday, February 8, 2019. The two-year term of service will begin on Monday, April 1, 2019. All Queens Community Board members are appointed by Borough President Katz, pursuant to the City Charter, with half of her appointments nominated by the City Councilmembers representing their respective Community Districts. Each Board has up to 50 unsalaried members, with each member serving a two-year term. All Community Board members who wish to continue serving on a Board are required to re-apply at the conclusion of their two-year term and are subject to review and reconsideration.

***** Queens Park Commissioner, Dorothy “Dottie” Lewandowski is retiring. A Queens native, Dottie was with Parks for almost 40 years. She was a regular visitor to Rockaway, had her critics here for sure, but we thought she cared and was accessible. We wish her the best in retirement. ***** Nate Tabor from Far Rockaway announced that he’ll be playing basketball for St. John’s next year, according to the New York Post. He plays for a high school in Connecticut and was recruited by a number of top schools. He told 24/7 Sports that he picked St. John’s because “it’s close to home and everything, family and friends.” He also mentioned the coaching staff

THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 2019 headed by Chris Mullin as a top reason for his choice. ***** Speaking of St. John’s… and we seem to every week. We had a lot of requests for the January 12 game but we only had 4 to give away. Richie Mikell was the name we pulled out of the hat. Congrats, Richie. Enjoy! We’ll have other games to offer soon. We hope the Johnnies keep rolling. It’s weird to have a top New York team this time of year. ***** Our condolences go out to the friends and family of Firefighter Steven Pollard. Pollard died on Sunday night after falling between a barrier on the Mill Basin Bridge, while trying to rescue people from a car. Although from Marine Park, Pollard was a friend to some locals and we know this is a tough hit for the FDNY community. ***** Governor Cuomo says he doesn’t run the MTA and that the subway is New York City’s

business (hence it’s the mayor’s fault). So, if he’s not in charge, who is he to say the L line won’t have to be fully closed down, as he did last week. Might as well ask, Governor, you have anything to do with the Cross Bay Bridge toll? ***** One of Rockaway’s signature events is the Poseidon Parade. Some great volunteers make this happen each September. The Poseidon Prom, almost as much fun as the parade, will take place at the Knights of Columbus on Saturday evening, February 9. It’s a prom but you don’t need a date – just a sea-themed outfit to dance in. There are costs in running a parade and this is not only fun, but it’s a fundraiser. Keep an eye out for more details. ***** Susan Zirinsky, a Neponsit native, has just been named the President of CBS news after a long stint producing the TV magazine show, “48 Hours.” She’s the first wom-

Page 7 an to hold the top job at the network. In an old NY Post article, Zirinsky talks about hearing gunshots on Beach 147th Street of all places. Two men were rubbed out, gangstyle. Later that day, she and friends went to watch “Lady and The Tramp” at the theater on Beach 116th Street. ***** We have to give a salute to readers who continue to send in great photos to our Local Color feature. Week in and week out, we get some beauties and are happy to print (when space allows). Keep us in mind when wondering who to share your great photo with. Send to Mail@Rockawaytimes.com. And please, remember, two per week is the limit. ***** Are you 21+ and need your GED? P.S./M.S. 183 (245 Beach 79th Street) is offering GED Courses from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday through June. Be on time! For more info, call 718-634-9459.

PSEG Long Island is more than just a utility company. Employee volunteers Patricia Miles of Valley Stream, and Christine Orgera of Howard Beach recently became “book fairies” when they visited PS 253 in Far Rockaway. Miles and Orgera helped to distribute an assortment of books to students, thanks to The Book Fairies program, a not-for-profit organization that builds literacy in high-need areas where students don’t have regular access to books to read. Based in Freeport, The Book Fairies collects and distributes reading materials for children of

all ages throughout the metropolitan area. Providing kids with new and gently used books fosters literacy and academic success. “It was such a pleasure seeing how much the teachers and students appreciated the gift of these wonderful books,” Miles said. “I loved reading as a child, so being able to assist this organization in fostering that joy in a new generation of kids is very rewarding.” For more information about PSEG Long Island’s Community Partnership Program, visit https://www.psegliny.com/page. cfm/Community.

South Queens Ball to Bring Area Bands Together For a Good Cause By Katie McFadden

Friday is going to be a ball. On January 11, the South Queens Ball at the American Legion in Broad Channel, will bring together some of South Queens’ best bands under one roof to raise some money, while camera crews film live to shed light on how the area bounced back after Hurricane Sandy, and how more work still needs to be done. It’s gonna be a rockin’ time on Friday night as Sasha Dobson, Hop City Hellcats, Walker and his bands, Brotherhood of the Grape and Q-South, Indaculture, Wine With Sue, and others come together for a good cause. The bands are donating their time to raise money and give back to a place that has served the community in positive ways—American Legion Hall Post 1404. Meanwhile, the whole thing is going to be filmed by Queens Public

Television (QPTV) for the second part of their award-winning documentary on the music of South Queens Sandy recovery. South Queens, including Rockaway, Broad Channel and Howard Beach, was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy, but it didn’t take long before the area proved that it was determined to bounce back. The summer after Sandy, Walker Hornung, Jimmy Dowd and Boarders hosted the annual Rockstock and Barrels festival on the beach to show that Rockaway keeps rocking no matter what’s thrown at it. Parts of the festival were filmed by Joe Valva of QPTV and it was made into a short documentary that went on to win an award. Now more than

six years later, QPTV hopes to shed light on where the area stands now since the storm, showing the progress and

bringing attention to how some are still not back home. So they’ll be filming some

of the same musicians that rocked the post-Sandy Rockstock at a can’t-miss music festival on Friday, while local online radio station, Rockaway Beach Broadcasting Company, will broadcast the whole thing live. Walker Hornung, who has organized the sweet lineup for the show, said the pieces for the South Queens Ball fell together. “I’d been in touch with QPTV and Joe said he wanted to do a follow up to the last documentary, showing how the area has rebounded and how everyone made out after the storm, whether they had a good experience or a poor one. He’s going to interview people that weren’t happy with how things turned out after Sandy, and people who are pleased,” he said. Continued on page 11

SOUTH QUEENS BALL

Continued from Page 10

Around this time of year, Hornung and his bands perform at B.B. Kings in Manhattan, but after the venue shut down last year, he was looking for a backup plan. “They offered me the Cutting Room and the new Sony Theater, but I figured we might as well stay local and raise money for those at home,” he said. Hornung reached out to the Broad Channel VFW, where he often performs at local fundraisers for friends in need, but those at the VFW directed him to another venue that could use some help—American Legion Post 1404. With the bands donating their time, the $20 admission to the show will go right back to the American Legion. Hornung says Jimmy Smallman of the American Legion has been a big help in making the show possible. Plus, the arrangement wound up working out well as the Legion offers a bigger space for more people to enjoy a big show such as this, plus its own

stage, which will make filming easier. “We’re really killing 10 birds with one stone by hosting this show locally, filming the show, having local bands volunteer their time and making money for the American Legion,” Hornung said. The lineup is full of some great performers that will offer a little something for everyone during their 45-mintue sets. Almost all of the performers are based in South Queens, and all of them either were themselves or know someone that was personally impacted by Hurricane Sandy. The Hop City Hellcats hail from Oneonta, but are no strangers to Queens stages and they’ll be kicking off the music at 6:45 p.m. Sasha Dobson of Norah Jones’ band will be performing her own tunes starting at 7:45 p.m. Walker and The Brotherhood of the Grape will be performing some songs from Walker’s Q-South Days, his Kings Heartbeat reggae days and their own songs, starting at 8:45 p.m. Local original favorite Indaculture

Page 11

will kick off at 9:45 p.m. and Wine With Sue will be playing their classic party covers to end the night starting at 10:45 p.m. Kooly Chat will be handling the sound and BMWA of the Kings Heartbeat will also be stopping by for a special performance. Throughout the show, QPTV will be filming the concert, in between interviewing those who were impacted by Hurricane Sandy in different ways. Hornung hopes that the follow-up documentary will be a good reminder to politicians and various agencies that Hurricane Sandy’s effects are still lingering. “I hope that people who haven’t gotten everything fixed already are able to get it fixed. We can’t all contribute financially but it seems like people got lost in the shuffle and lost in paperwork and if we can get bring them out of that by bringing attention to what still needs to be done, it could be a big help. I was fortunate to come back after a year, but there are people who are still not

ADVANCED MATH & SCIENCE IV

in their houses yet and it’s insane,” Hornung, of Howard Beach, said. “It feels like tragedies happen so frequently now and everyone moves on to the next thing, so if the people in South Queens don’t take of each other, then no one would. Politicians come in for photo ops, but if we film a TV show that brings light to what’s still going on and air it a few times, we might attract attention that will bring help to those that still need it. It’s embarrassing to see that this is still going on, and it seems like the most action is done when officials are embarrassed by something or it’s in their face. So hopefully something good comes from this.” The South Queens Ball kicks off at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion at 209 Cross Bay Blvd. Admission is $20, which goes right back to the American Legion. A cash bar will be available. If you can’t make the show, RBBC Radio has you covered. They’ll be broadcasting the show live on www. RBBCRadio.com.

New Year, But Old Problems Discussed at CB 14 By Kami-Leigh Agard

At the onset of Community Board 14’s first meeting for 2019 this past Tuesday, January 8 at Bayswater Jewish Center, folks cordially greeted each other “Happy New Year!” However, once the evening kicked off, tensions ran high. From worries about yet another new mixed-income housing development with the proposed Beach 21st Street site, homeless shelters, and lack of infrastructure with parking and schools included for the Downtown Far Rock’s Revitalization; lack of progress with Arverne East’s development; status of Peninsula Hospital’s former site, and worries about Rockaway Beach — not just beach erosion, but the safety and challenges already witnessed in the winter months — folks were not just silently despondent, they were mad, and wanted answers. First up was CB14 Chairwoman Dolores Orr commenting on her disappointment with NY Rising, (a participatory recovery and resiliency initiative estab-

lished to provide assistance to communities severely damaged by Superstorm Sandy, federally allotted with more than $700 million). “We are hoping to receive their most recent report, which we have been promised to get by next week,” Orr said. CB14 District Manager Jonathan Gaska announced two committee meetings both happening next week at Knights of Columbus at 7 p.m. On Tuesday, January 15, is CB14’s Youth Services/Education Committee meeting, and the Transportation Committee’s meeting is on Wednesday, January 16. CB14 board member and Rockaway Beach Civic Association (RBCA) president John Cori brought up the lack of development for Arverne East. “I would like to hear from all the agencies involved. I feel that even after the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was announced by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), all the focus has been on downtown Far Rock. Why isn’t CB14 becoming

bigger players on Arverne East’s future?” In attendance was Councilman Donovan Richards, who responded, “Mayor Alicia Glen will be meeting with folks who were part of the project. However, keep in mind that the infrastructure costs for Arverne East are astronomical. This project dates back to the Bloomberg administration. The current administration wants less density in the plan. I believe the current vision is for it to be less residential, and more commercial. The focus is on homeownership, small homes that are affordable, and shrinking the density of the area. ” Gaska added, “The original version of the plan was market rate with the developers paying for the infrastructure. However, as soon as you add ‘affordability’ to the equation, the infrastructure costs, like Donovan said, are astronomical.” During the public speaking period, Lisa George from Senator James Sanders’ office an-

nounced two critical meetings: Next Friday, January 18, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Battalion Pentecostal Assembly Inc. (454 Beach 67th Street), Sanders is hosting an event to provide his constituents with property tax exemptions and utility bill reduction assistance. On Saturday, February 2, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Black Spectrum Theatre (inside Roy Wilkins Park: 177-01 Baisley Blvd., Jamaica), get ready for a hot debate on marijuana legalization. To RSVP, contact Sanders’ office at 718-523-3069 or 718-327-7017. District Leader Lew Simon announced a Public Advocate Forum on Thursday, January 24, 7 p.m. at Martin De Porres HS (140 B 112 Street, where all candidates will participate. Simon also voiced concerns about something that was on many minds—the rising water level on the peninsula and Broad Channel. “With the continual rains, flooding has been rampant and our sand is almost gone in some Continued on page 13

NEW YEAR

Continued from Page 12 areas. What’s going to happen this summer with our prime beaches and bay,” Simon said. RBCA’s Bridget Klapinski, Clare Hilger and Jeremy Jones expressed their worries about the health and safety of Rockaway Beach. “With all the flooding and continual tides — from wire, wood, garbage — there is so much hazardous debris collecting on the beach. We are less than five months before Memorial Weekend. Unless something is done, the beaches are going to be shut down again, which is a big letdown, not just for residents, but visitors. Forget swimming, people already can’t walk on the beach. And also, beach? What beach, it’s gone! We want the Parks Department to not just drive by this strip, but walk. The decayed wooden sticks from the groins are a huge safety hazard. Please remove these sticks!,” the group said. Councilman Richards then reported on quite a few highlights in all the multi-million-dollar construction projects underway

THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 2019 for Downtown Far Rock’s revitalization. Namely: The reconstruction of the abandoned Thriftway Mall is starting; also revamping existing schools with new facilities and equipment; tackling the flooding issues in Arverne and Edgemere and downtown Far Rock; rebuilding the Far Rockaway library, expanding the Arverne library; funding the new maternity ward at St. John’s and expanding the Addabbo Health Center’s facilities and services; expanding sanitation pickup in Mott Avenue (Beach Channel Drive to Cornaga Avenue); building affordable housing at Beach Dunes II; senior affordable housing on Beach 34th Street; and the most recent jewel, the Beach 21st Street site, which boasts 224 affordable housing units with retail space, community playground and garden and parking spots, and the list goes on. One important mention, regarding flooding, Richards advised that if you see catch basins clogged, call 311 immediately, as clogged basins add to flooding. Though many at CB14’s meeting were elated by the downtown

Sorrentino’s

Page 13

improvements, there were many questions. Bayswater Civic Association President Enid Glabman had a question regarding schools. “With all this new housing and people coming in, I don’t hear you discussing plans for new schools. Especially for children on the elementary school level. Many parents like knowing they can walk their children to school, instead of bussing them,” Glabman said. Richards responded, “As you see, many schools in the plan are going to be upgraded and totally improved. Most middle class people don’t send their children in this area to the local schools, due to lack of educational quality or safety. However, these schools are going to be upgraded to an elevated field, where parents will feel encouraged.” Richards also announced that his office will be hosting a meeting regarding the future of Peninsula Hospital’s site on Tuesday, January 22, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at PS/MS 105 Bay School (420 Beach 51st Street). To RSVP, email: dbrown@council.nyc.gov

or phone 718-471-7014. As for Community Builders presentation about the Beach 21st Street (behind Mott Avenue) that boasts 224 apartments, green-equipped affordable housing units with solar energy, 24K square-feet of ground floor retail space, a fitness center, community garden and playground and over 470 construction jobs — those in attendance were not impressed. Cori asked, “Forget about adding more housing with no schools or parking. To whom are these construction jobs going to? They should be kept local and union.” To which the Builders’ team responded, “We don’t have control over that, especially because of the nature of the project, we’re not sure who’s going to be hired, and if they will be paid union rates.” A vote was then called as for whether CB14 would endorse the Beach 21st project. With a majority vote of 19, Community Builders got the support they needed to present their plan to the Queens Borough President’s Office this coming Monday.

Holiday Bruise

As I strive to move through the initial days of the New Year, I find my house is clean and empty. Sterile, even. The tree, though still up, lacks its pre-holiday luster. Mixed emotions collide and cloud my vision. Was it the best day of the year, or the worst? Did I find the true spirit of Christmas and recapture child-like wonder? Or did I lose another piece of

my innocence to the cynicism of adulthood? I think back to the days prior to Christmas that now seems so far away, so utterly unapproachable. I feasted and laughed, but still wished for more. I waited and waited. I even sang festive holiday tunes and yet still, I waited more. I waited for Christmas morning when I could briefly become a child again. But shortly after it arrived, I looked around and contemplated the festive, yet crumpled wrapping paper and stray tinsel littering the floor like confetti and the absence of the 24-hour sounds of Christmas carols on the radio. The living room looks like a circus and, to be honest, it kind of was. Bringing with it an end to anticipation, it still felt like I was waiting. Maybe I was. I shared my post-holiday melancholia with my beloved Grace ("she who must be obeyed"), and told her that I still yearned for that one special holiday

¡

memory that could help to carry me through to our next Christmas season, to assist me in keeping myself mindful of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and his indefatigable optimism and abundance of Christmas spirit. In her infinite wisdom, "she who must be obeyed" sat me down and told me that I should not depend on Rudolph to assist me in dealing with my post-holiday doldrums, as he actually does not exist. According to my beloved and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring. Therefore, according to every historical rendition depicting Santa’s reindeer replete with splendid antlers, every single

one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen, had to be a girl. "She who must be obeyed" ended with the caveat that my sexist ass should simply accept the fact that, clearly, only females would be capable of chauffeuring a morbidly obese man in a red velvet suit who has not shaved in years, all around the world in one night, stopping whenever necessary to ask directions, and returning him home safe and not get lost in the process! All I could think of was that Gene Autry is turning over in his grave somewhere out west! Enough with the post-holiday blahs! Shortly after the New Year, myself and Grace partook of a brunch at a local eating establishment and while perusing the menu, my attention was drawn to a gentleman seated alone at the bar having a grand old time by himself laughing loudly at nothing in particular. Continued from Page 20 As he finished a drink, he would wave to the bartender for another and then proceed to start laughing once again. I couldn't help but stare until "she who must be obeyed" tugged at my sleeve and asked, "Don't you recognize who that is?" Not having a clue, I simply shook my head. My beloved responded, "It has been more than thirty years ago we dated

and he proposed to me but I turned him down. What do you think of that?" All I could think to say was that 30+ years have passed since his marriage proposal was declined and here he is today, still celebrating! In closing, my physician has assured me that X-rays have ruled out a concussion but in the future I should remain keenly aware that some things are left better unsaid! GETTING THROUGH THE WINTER For years and years, I suffered in the winter. I suffered from the lack of light and the cold - my mood was low and I struggled to be ok. I didn’t have the mind strength to think ahead and I didn’t know what to do. My friends would tell me to buy the “sun-stimulating light” and sit in front of it for periods during the day when I could. My “light” came when I accepted the seasons - not liking but accepting. And when I used my mind to serve me rather than

letting it dictate my experience especially in winter. Any sign of sun, I am sitting in it and thanking it for warming my heart. I try to plan to study something or whatever if I’m going to be home on a long Sunday. I try to make a choice to rejuvenate rather than let the lack of light take the “light” out of me. I come back to what my father used to say when I asked him if he was cold when we were outside and he didn’t have his hat or gloves. He would say, “I

tell myself I’m warm and I get warm.” I try to tell myself to be happy and while I am not jumping up for joy in the winter, I am ok with maybe going within and thinking that today is today and tomorrow is tomorrow and if I am lucky enough I will arrive at the time when I will open the windows and let the fresh air come in. But for the time being, it is a time to explore the inside. Maybe intimate time with family and friends. Learning something new. Making something. Planning something like the summer garden or an upcoming memorable event. All in all, being conscious about using the time to be present and happy, rather than letting the affected-by-winter body call the shots. It is a physiological thing, from what I have read - shorter light days real physical body effects which I have felt and endured. But it could be a very different experience. We can be sad or we can be not sad, by using a few tools. When you start thinking how sad you are, think of something funny.

The Rockaway Times When you start thinking about the daunting tasks you have to do now or in the future, imagine being plucked up and away and dropped in a beautiful place. When you are sitting like a lump on a log feeling sorry for yourself, go to a mirror, look into your own eyes and ask yourself, “What do I have to feel sorry for?” And move. There are many forms the body can take to promote good feeling. Movement of the spine in different directions is energizing - bending to each side, twisting to each side, folding forward. Stretching the arms to the side and up overhead and tilting back a little into a gentle backbend is great for a bad mood because the spine elongates and energy rises. In the winter, think positive, move and turn the corners of your mouth up. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Watching TV, Not That TV Tinea (or pityriasis) versicolor (TV) is a common fungal skin infection that causes the skin to turn a variety of colors (therefore “versicolor”). It is caused by Malassezia yeasts that live on human skin. Sebaceous skin glands release a fatty, oily substance that is called sebum through hair follicles. Sebum provides nutrients that are necessary for the yeasts to survive on the skin. Living in a hot, humid climate, sweating excessively, or having a weakened immune system allows the fungus to flourish. Tinea

versicolor is most commonly seen in adolescents and young adults and can affect some families more than others, however it is not contagious. Because the fungus interferes with the function of melanocytes (skin cells that produce skin pigment), it can cause the affected skin areas to be lighter in shade than the surrounding unaffected skin. This is often more visible in the summer months due to sun exposure as sunlight stimulates melanocytes to make skin pigment (otherwise known as tanning). Typically, the chest

and back are most affected by TV as those skin areas have the highest number of sebaceous glands, however TV can also occur on the upper arms, neck, and face. Skin infected by TV will have a blotchy, mottled appearance. Scales, or skin flakes, can also be seen with TV. Otherwise, the only other symptom of TV may be mild itchiness. TV may be diagnosed by scraping the affected area of the skin and examining it under a microscope. The yeast cells have a round and long, narrow form often resembling, and therefore called, “spaghetti and meatballs.” Alternatively, scraping or stretching the skin may cause more flakes to form. This is called the evoked scale sign. Microscopic examination or looking for the evoked scale sign is often unnecessary as the appearance of the skin is usually enough to make the diagnosis. TV is notoriously difficult to treat, and relapses are common. Treatment usually starts with selenium sulfide shampoo (aka dandruff shampoo) as this causes the outermost por-

Page 23 tion of the skin to shed, thereby removing the fungus. This treatment is done daily for one week, however repeated treatment is often necessary. Topical antifungals like ketoconazole and zinc pyrithione are other common treatment options. Rarely, if the skin infection is widespread or resistant to other treatments, oral antifungals may be used, however, due to the risk to toxicity with oral antifungals, this is almost never advised. It is important to remember that it may take months for the skin to return to normal appearance after successful treatment. Often, the persistence of a blotchy skin pattern may be mistaken for failed treatment. Summertime relapses are common and, for those with frequent recurrences, monthly treatments may be necessary. SLICE OF LIFE By Beth Hanning

THAT TIME OF YEAR New Year’s Resolutions. We all make them and many break them. I asked my husband for his New Year’s resolution to be to stop using the word “we” when he refers to asking me to do something. He always says, “You know what ‘we’ should do?” It is not something he would ever do; it is something he wants me to do for him. He told me that he is not going to stop using that term and I should

worry about my own resolutions. Of course, mine is the same every year: to go to the gym more and to eat healthier. Some people on social media are leaving Facebook, Instagram or Twitter for a “break.” They are going to do something more worthwhile with their time and I applaud that. One person took a picture of a television and stated that he was going to stop

watching television for a bit. That is something I could never do. First of all, television is educational. I learn many things from television. Not just from documentaries or news programs like “60 Minutes” or “CBS Sunday Morning.” I enjoy my Saturday morning “Wild Countdown with Jack Hanna” and love learning about different animals from around the world. I also have learned many interesting things that could save me from dangerous situations from all of the “Law and Order” shows. When the internet was new, I learned not to give out personal information over email and also became aware of how pedophiles use the internet and I was able to monitor my children. After recently watching the Netflix series “You” I changed all of my settings and passwords. However, there is a guilty pleasure aspect of television. I am not going to lie. I watch some television that is considered a guilty pleasure.

The Rockaway Times Over the years, I have watched some of the Real Housewives shows, and many hours of “Below Deck,” (which could be deemed as educational due to the various geographical locations the yacht sails out of each season.) I dare you to sit down and see an episode of “Below Deck” on a marathon and change the channel. I bet you will not. You will lose hours of your life. Currently on my DVR is six hours of “Surviving R. Kelly” and I cannot wait to watch it. I am waiting for a block of time where I can binge watch and also for some friends to watch with me, because watching that alone would not be any fun. It needs to be commentated. So, to everyone out there: good luck with whatever resolution you have made. I hope you are all successful in your endeavors. Have a great week. I would love to hear your resolutions and guilty pleasures. Email me at beth81772@aol.com.

Medical Marijuana for Autism?

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard

Recently, a parent shared an article about a Puerto Rican autistic boy who gained the ability to speak just after two doses of cannabis oil (CBD). At first I balked. The medical community is actually prescribing weed for autism? I incredulously pictured my daughter smoking a blunt, like a pint-sized Cheech and Chong. It seemed a little avant-garde for the conservative in me, but I was intrigued. According to the article, the boy’s parents tried various schools and therapies, and eventually stumbled upon a mystery treatment: CBD oil. Through a fundraising program, they were able to receive a tiny bottle of the oil. He was given oral doses twice a day. Within just two days, he was finally able to speak. The mom said, “Kalel surprised us in school by saying the vowels, A-E-I-O-U. It was the first time ever. You can’t imagine the

emotion we had, hearing his voice for the first time. The teacher recorded him…and we said well, the only different thing we have been doing is using CBD.” I got emotional just reading the story because I too, want to hear my daughter speak. I scoured the internet and found out that there are hundreds of parents in the U.S. and internationally administering CBD to their autistic children. There is even a nonprofit organization, Mothers Advocating Medical Marijuana for Autism (MAMMA), co-founded by Thalia Michelle, a self-described conservative Christian mother from Texas. In a Tonic.Vice.com article, “There’s a Movement to Legalize Weed Extracts for Kids With Autism,” Michelle said, “My life was hell. I didn’t sleep…I did everything (for him) short of any hardcore pharmaceuticals. The difference CBD oil made for Lance was almost immediate.” What is cannabis oil? Simply put, cannabis oil is the concentrated liquid extract of the marijuana plant, Cannabis sativa. Sim-

ilar to other herbal extracts, the chemicals in cannabis oils vary depending on how the extract is made and what chemicals were in the plant to begin with. There are several cannabinoids, but the two that are most well-known among consumers are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). THC is the primary psychoactive compound in marijuana and it is what people are searching for when they want a product that gives them a "high." Unlike THC, CBD isn't known to cause psychoactive effects, and is therefore attractive to those who want to avoid the high but who believe there are other benefits of CBD. The Food and Drug Administration doesn’t endorse CBD or any form of cannabis for the treatment of autism. The journal, “Global Pediatric Health” notes, “CBD and similar products remain a promising yet unproven intervention in the treatment of children with autism.” But another team of Israeli researchers have found promising results. Israel is the medical mari-

juana research capital of the world and has conducted an impressive amount of research on cannabis and autism. NYS legalized medical marijuana in 2014, but only 10 conditions make patients eligible. Namely: Cancer, HIV infection or AIDS, Multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury with spasticity, Epilepsy, Inflammatory bowel disease, Neuropathy, Huntington’s disease, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Parkinson’s disease. However, I found there are NYS parents of autistic children, who are paying out-of-pocket for CBD. I’m still on the fence with CBD. More to come on this topic. The Rockaway Times

By Shane Kulman

Drop The Doubt Dear Enchantress, I want to change. I doubt myself ALL the time. I stay awake every night riddled with self-doubting thoughts, replaying old things that have passed. I create stories that are not true and then live in inner pain and turmoil. I read your column here a lot, and it's a big deal for me to reach out, so I hope my letter gets answered. I am kind of out of shape. I will begin to work out again this year, but I feel pretty much hopeless that I can change. Can I? I know you don't have the specific answers for me,

but I am desperate, and cannot live the next 40 or more years like this. I want to have fun, relax and enjoy the moments I spend with my family and friends.... Dear Debbie Doubter, I have so much love for you already, I know that selfdoubt voice well. I've always had it, which is why I'm so passionate about helping others to train that self doubt voice. We all have programing that has taught us to question what we naturally think. Your intuitive voice can be fine tuned, that is the antidote to the self doubt,

Page 29

and the news about listening to your intuition AND trusting that it's right can be uncomfortable and confronting. BUT once you build a track record for listening and following your intuition, you can "keep score" and slow down to make choices that FEEL better for you. When you begin to make choices for you, and choose to ignore the self-doubt, it will make others uncomfortable, and your job is to get comfortable with other people's discomfort. The best advice here is — don't be alone in this area, self-doubt voices will get louder when you begin to believe in yourself, and it can be a pit fall or a boobie trap, to get you to go deeper into the rabbit hole of old beliefs... An old belief for you might be, "If I make choices for myself, others will think I'm a b*tch, or mean or they will leave me." This belief is a common one, I wonder if it resonates for you. I recommend you writing these mo-

ments down, so you can read and reflect moments of your changing your mindset. People pleasing is a rampant disease of many women, and it cripples our intuitive muscles, so to speak. So, find a group or a supportive, willing friend to be with you on this journey. If you have no one, come to The Awkward Enchanted Coven on Facebook, you will find like-minded women who are trained to support you on this part of your journey! Much Love, Enchantress Shane

During the winter of 1917, German and Russian soldiers in World War I briefly joined forces to fight the wolves that were stalking them in the Russian woods. While we were dropping the ball for 2019, Ethiopia was welcoming in 2012...The main calendar they use, heavily influenced by the traditional calendar of the Coptic Orthodox Church, predates the Gregorian one used by most countries today and is seven years behind. Shortly before his death in 1966, Walt Disney wrote "Kurt Russell" on a piece of paper that was later found on his desk. According to Disney historian, Dave Smith, the notes were among Disney's last few written words. At the time of Disney's death, Russell was a largely unknown child actor working for the studio.
