Local Aspires to be Miss USA By Katie McFadden
Ciara Romero is hoping to be the next Miss USA. But first the local resident needs a little help to get there. On April 24, Miss New York candidate Ciara Romero will be heading to Seneca Falls, NY for orientation. By that date, she needs to raise $1,495 in order to compete in the pageant, being held June 2-4 in Niagara Falls. After going through a tough time with a cancer diagnosis last year, Romero is hoping to make it all the way to the crown so she can help pay it forward to those who helped her along the way. “Every day above ground is a true blessing. In August I was diagnosed with a rare cancer called Appendiceal Neuroendocrine tumor in my appendix. What began as appendicitis turned into two major surgeries back to back. While recovering in the hospital, I saw so much devastation that not only the pandemic was causing, but how depleting cancer can be to a person’s body. Since then, it is super important to me that I give back to those hospitals, nurses, doctors and patients that were by my side when I was very close to dying myself,” Romero said. Through her cancer battle, she spent five months going through the Northwell Health system. During her last PET scan in October, she got the good news—she was cancer free. Now Romero hopes to pay it forward to those who helped her get there. This isn’t Romero’s first time entering a pageant, but it is her last opportunity. “In 2007, I did a Miss Teen USA pageant, where I won first runner up,” she said. “This is my last year I’m able to compete in a pageant since I’m 27, which is the cutoff age. That’s why I’m really motivated to make it happen this year. It’s now or nothing.” As a candidate, Romero will be running on a platform supporting the social cause of climate change and its impact on agriculture, as well as rising sea levels. After reading many
articles on the subject, she realized the importance of raising more awareness. “I think it’s really important that we not only maintain our health as human beings, but for the planet. On the side of agriculture, we saw a shortage not only because of the pandemic, but we had shortages of vegetables and fruits in our farmers markets and it’s important for me to take a stand on this and make it known and heard,” Romero said. Staying healthy, especially in the wake of her cancer recovery, is of utmost importance to Romero. After leaving the hospital, she had a major Vitamin D deficiency. To help address it in a natural way, she discovered solar running. “It’s when you look at the solar vortex and the way the earth is angled toward the sun and the way it’s projected. It’s physically running and walking at certain times of the day, when the sun is at its peak between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., the perfect time to absorb the sun for your skin, body, hair and more. That’s how I ended up gaining and maintaining my Vitamin D,” she said. As something that also helps relieve stress, skin issues and other underlying conditions, solar running has become something that Romero actively shares with her friends, family and community.
Wanting to give back to her community is a big reason for Romero entering the pageant. The St. Camillus and Scholars’ Academy alum says, “I would love to give back to the community I was raised in.” In order to compete in the pageant, Romero must receive

Musicians Band Together to Support Dayton Towers Fire Victims By Kami-Leigh Agard
This past Sunday, January 9 at RBQ, musicians came from near and far to help the Dayton Towers fire victims in the best way they know how—through the healing power of music. The all-day music festival, orchestrated by local songstress, Patricia McCartin, known by her stage name, Patti Blue, raised $1,000, of which all proceeds (minus the cash prize for the 50/50) went towards individuals devastated by the fire, including the McFadden family. As reported in The Rockaway Times, just three days into the new year on Monday, January 3 at approximately 8:46 p.m., FDNY Engine 265, Ladder 121, Battalion 47, Engine 266, Engine 268, Ladder 137 and others responded to a call of a twoalarm blaze on the eighth floor of the 102-00 Shore Front Park-

I was told that she loves Barbie dolls, and it gave me such joy to see the smile on her face,” McCartin said. However, McCartin was desperate to do more. “I kept asking myself what more can I do. Music is a powerful symbol of love and healing, so I drummed up the idea to host a music festival as a fundraiser for the McFadden family and surrounding neighbors affected by the fire. However, besides raising money, I thought the next best gift we as musicians can give is our passion and appreciation for the power of music to heal.” In just a mere few days, McCartin contacted her fellow music artists, Chris Long, John Baxter, The Rock-A-Wades (whose uncle was impacted by the fire), Rick Eckerle of ArchAngels, Ron Bongo, Al Swirn and DJ Miltey Boyle. A Time to P I N E By Katie McFadden
Seemingly out of nowhere, a forest has grown on Rockaway Beach. After dozens of Christmas trees appeared on Beach 81st Street last week, it piqued the curiosity of many. It’s all part of P I N E, a site-specific performance installation and space for communal grieving that will include performances for the next two Saturdays. On Saturdays, January 15 and January 22, all are welcome to enjoy this performance which “explores the choreography of grief, and the enduring power of community.” In this trying time of loss over the past two years, everyone is invited to join in this communal mourning for those who are gone. The performance will feature five dancers as they “face the coastal winter elements together without reservation. The immensity of their grief is surmounted by the resolve of their will. One dancer lashes themselves to, drags, and carries a pine tree through the sand. They are not alone, however. As the four other dancers catch, recover, and bear the weight of one another, it becomes clear that there is salvation in solidarity. With this communal mourning, their loss is not permanent. Like the trees have evolved from sapling to Christmas tree, to refuse, to art, to mulch, collective love and support will transform grief to memorial. Although a loved one is lost, those who remain have the power to celebrate their memory, as long as they continue to hold one another,” a press release reads. Living in Rockaway for the past five years, m i c c a has found inspiration in the place they call home. “I’ve used this, my home, as my base for all of my artwork and showcasing all the incredible, beautiful things we have out here,” they said. Starting in October 2020, m i c c a has been self-producing large-scale works such as Sun Dae Day Daze, a dance installation involving ice cream, that some may have seen taking place at local handball courts over the summer. P I N E first began last year af-
ter the sudden death of m i c c a’s close friend, local musician and bartender, Sam Jayne, last December. “He was not the first person I’ve lost but there was something about it that broke me. It was at this time in winter during the pandemic and being overcome with grief and not knowing how to process it, not being able to connect with people and talk about it. I felt like I was spiraling in guilt and what ifs,” m i c c a said. And then they found a way to come together with others who knew Sam. “We had a memorial which was so fantastic with a bonfire on the beach, and we listened to his music, and I had a Christmas tree tied to myself and I just did an improv dance and that was the beginning of this concept. It was this beautiful way to connect with people in a pandemic in a safe way, outside, sharing stories and memories and just remembering these positive times and getting to know him more through his friends, and I just felt this shouldn’t stop. It should continue to honor this person and his creative spirit and potential.” Shortly after, m i c c a also lost another longtime friend, Jeffrey McDonagh. So P I N E will go on, for Sam and for Jeffrey, but this time in a bigger way. M i c c a is inviting all to share in their own grief as a community. From the start, P I N E has been a group effort. Tavern in Williamsburg. Lisena Garden Center, Maria Bender who sells Christmas trees near Stop and Shop and Garden Gallery of Long Island also all donated the trees they didn’t sell. With the help of NYC Parks, which will turn the trees into mulch at the end, the trees were installed in a formation on Beach 81st Street. Some others have since even added their own. “Someone planted their tree, in line with the installation. I love the detail that they did and how they made it line up with the rest of the trees. It just shows that this is for everyone,” m i c c a said. M i c c a has designed P I N E for everyone. “I want people to be able to engage in steps and process their own grief. This is like a ritual to help us all process all of this grief for the past few years, whether it’s someone you lost or all of the changes we’ve been through, like how we’ve lost our old ways of being, and that in itself is also really hard. I want to instill the belief in the power and potential of us. I’m a huge advocate for humanity, a cheerleader of community and I really believe in us and that we’re good and can do good. We can do this together and I want for this experience to make you feel more hope and connection and joy,” m i c c a said. To involve others in this process, m i c c a will provide fabric and ribbon for those who attend the performance to write dedications to those they’ve lost. For those who cannot attend in person, m i c c a is also accept-
ing dedications on their website, which they will add to the ribbons. The ribbons will be tied to the trees during the performance. The event begins at 3:30 p.m both Saturdays. All are welcome to come and make their dedications and purchase soups and hot beverages to stay warm. The performance begins at 4 p.m. and lasts for about an hour. Attendees can bring blankets or chairs or choose to move around designated areas of the installation during the performance, to take it in at different angles. The January 15 performance will also include a collective meditation by Idgy Dean, a musician, theologian, and divinity student who is finishing up her final year at Harvard Divinity School. The performances are free but RSVPs are requested to be made at micca.co. Donations are also welcome to support the performers as m i c c a is a big advocate for equitable wages for dancers. Proceeds from food and beverages purchased during the performance will also help this effort. Community Board 14 January Meeting Recap By Dan Guarino
Community Board 14 opened its first meeting of 2022 on Tuesday, January 11, promptly at 7:15 p.m. Held online via WebEx, it was attended by more than 90 people. Despite some technical glitches, the meeting moved along at a brisk pace. Speaking first, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz noted a variety of accomplishments and initiatives her office has undertaken in the two years since she became DA. She stated their approach is to provide equal justice both “for defendants and for victims.” Katz cited the case of a World War I veteran whose remains were recently found buried in a Queens backyard. Katz and her team were able to prosecute and bring to account the man’s murderer from 45 years ago. She noted success in reducing present day crime by going into areas like the Redfern Houses and “getting to the drivers of
crime out,” prosecuting them for gun violence, narcotics possession etc. She also noted that in any community “the first time they see a DA, they should not be thinking we’re coming to get them.” So she has been speaking with community leaders and program organizers and working with youth and residents to strengthen the community. The DA’s office initiatives outlined include successful gun buyback programs, creating special hate crimes, worker protection and housing protection units and a community connection division so residents can directly report, for instance, suspected cases of human trafficking Next, City Councilwoman Joann Ariola addressed the meeting. Now starting her second week in office, she announced her Rockaway office, located 114-12 Beach Channel Drive, is now up and running, and she has retained several members from former Councilman Eric Ulrich’s staff. Ariola has also set up seven district Covid testing buses, notably at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club, the Arverne YMCA, and in front of the Broad Channel Library. Another site is planned for Breezy Point. Community Board 14 District Manager Jonathan Gaska spoke next, following up on a letter to the New York State Independent Redistricting Commission recommending that Rockaway remain as one Congressional District rather than be split. The Commission’s latest plan reflects the one district idea. Gaska reminded all the deadline to apply or re-apply for board membership is February 16. Applications can be filed online at www.queensbp.org. His office is also compiling a list of young people who would be interested in shoveling snow if
needed for seniors and others in need and can receive community service credit for the effort. Those interested can contact 718-4717300. Gaska noted the Department of Sanitation is taking applications for provisional workers to clear snow from crosswalks and catch basins at $20 per hour. Chairperson Orr added especially with the extreme cold weather, anyone without heat should call 311 directly. Orr stated she has received two responses to her request to Rockaway’s federal, state and city elected officials to provide written reports on “what they’ve accomplished and what challenges they see for 2022.” A representative noted highlights from State Assemblyman Khaleel Anderson’s ten-page report. He has also co-sponsored bills for disaster preparedness, tuition assistance and mold reduction in city housing. Next, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato reported the establishment of a commission to prevent childhood drowning, the passage of Fred’s Law, which requires hospitals to allow individuals with disabilities to have a support person accompany them, and legislation to make the NYC’s Housing Preservation & Development more accountable. 2022 goals include preventing toxic dumping in Jamaica Bay and elimination of the Cross Bay Bridge toll. A representative for Congressman Gregory Meeks gave an oral summary of funding secured for New York overall. While noting it was appreciated, Chairperson Orr requested that the congress-

The majority of those scheduled for the meeting’s Public Speaking portion addressed their opposition to an alleged expansion at the Surfside buildings along Shore Front Parkway near Beach 105th Street. Though no formal plan has yet been put forward, members of the Surfside Tenant Association (SHAFT) are already fighting to keep property owner ALMA Realty from putting up additional structures in addition to the three 12-story buildings already there. Many speakers pointed out this would put additional burdens on the peninsula’s weak infrastructure, citing poor roads and rail service, sewage and storm protections and one hospital. They also gave examples of ALMA’s poor management of the current property, pointing out non-working elevators and electricity, lack of heat and hot water, security and fire safety issues and overflowing garbage. Despite numerous outreaches, residents say these issues
have not been resolved, leading them to ask how “if the current owner cannot take care of the existing property, how will they manage a large new addition?” They noted that a similar plan proposed by ALMA was shot down in 2014. The dozen or so speaking on Surfside residents’ behalf requested the Community Board to reject any future expansion plan. Next, Christine James of the Bringing Back Rockaway community group stated she was seeking help in cleaning up the area under the Rockaway Freeway from Beach 84th Street to Beach 108th. She noted many local school children walked underneath this covered area every day. Later, 100th Precinct Community Affairs Officer Victor Boamah asked to be put in touch with James as he may be able to help provide youth volunteers. Deputy Inspector Carlos Fabara, commander of the 100th Precinct, then gave a recap of the previous year. He noted, “We had a fantastic 2021. We were down in six of the seven major crime categories and actually were at the lowest level for the 100th.” Fabara reported crimes such as gun violence were down to the lowest level in a decade, with others such as petty larceny, minor assaults and domestic violence were also down. “We had 827 arrests last year, as compared to when we were up to over 2,000 in 2015-2016.” The last speaker, Chief Operating Officer Jason Pierre, advised Peninsula Preparatory Academy Charter School is now recruiting students from Pre-K though 5th Grade. The school, using the former St. Mary’s parochial school site off Beach 19th Street, is tuition free. Student applications will be picked by a lottery held in April. Peninsula Prep is seeking teachers, even skilled previous residents who have moved back into the area. Interested students and potential teachers can apply at www.peninsulaprep.org. Army Corps of Engineers Dan Falt, recently promoted to oversee all projects in the district, gave updates on Rockaway storm protection progress. Falt noted a new project manager would replace him soon. Noting, however, his nearly nine-year involvement
in the effort, and that he is also a peninsula resident, Falt stated he will still be keeping a close eye on the project. Falt reported jetties are now finished on Beach 107th Street and crews have moved on to Beach 98th Street. Work will be finishing within two weeks at Beach 102nd Street, with crews moving over to Beach 92nd Street. Falt said the construction schedule for five additional groins to be built uptown is still to be determined. Contracts have already been awarded for sand replenishment from Beach 9th to Beach 149th, as well as for crossovers for Neponsit and Belle Harbor beaches. Focus is now shifting to Jamaica Bay where building eight pumping stations, each situated on ½ acre of land, is in the preliminary stage. Once final sites are decided on, the process of acquiring the needed land can begin. Falt also fielded Board member’s questions. A motion was passed to accept CB 14’s Nominating Committee’s recommended election slate consisting of current members. The Correspondence Committee reported letters have been drafted to new Mayor Eric Adams and new school’s chancellor David Banks to request keeping Scholars’ Academy’s previous admissions policies, including giving preference to siblings of students already in the school. Chairperson Orr asked Manager Gaska to reach out to the FDNY for official comparison data on whether new speed humps along Shore Front Parkway impeded firefighters racing to the recent apartment fire at Dayton Towers. Gaska also noted that unbeknownst to the Board, the old Peninsula Hospital site has been sold to a new developer, so “we don’t know how much plans may have changed.” Inquiries are underway. A final motion was accepted to send a letter requesting the MTA to expand their outreach to the homeless during very cold winter days. It was noted that currently two to three homeless persons per car can currently be found sleeping on the A train. The meeting was finally adjourned at 9:31 p.m.

The Restaurant Etiquette Guide By Natalie Crooks and James Mallios
We’ve all been there… you’re sitting in a fancy restaurant, feeling out of your comfort zone. The row of forks is tormenting you as you sit unsure of where to begin. Fine dining restaurants can be anxiety-inducing for some, the embarrassment of not knowing how to pronounce the wine you want to order or having absolutely no idea of what to order on a menu written entirely in French. Restaurant etiquette isn’t exactly something any of us learned in school and it’s not something a lot of our parents taught us, but it’s just as important to be mindful and polite at the corner diner as it is at the five-star French restaurant. But what is the proper protocol for dining out? Trusting the server is an important part of making your
dining experience better. I always consider their suggestions and I never make any major changes to a dish, but even with small ones I always make sure to ask if removing or adding an ingredient will compromise the dish. Of course, if you have allergies or dietary restrictions, you might need to remove ingredients from a dish more often than most and that is completely acceptable! No restaurant wants to make anyone feel sick, or worse, send someone to the hospital. Letting the staff know about your dietary restrictions and allergies is very important and the restaurant will greatly appreciate your transparency. You can also help the restaurant to create a nice experience by placing your full order at once, not including dessert. Most restaurants are able to pace your meal out for you, making sure you have plenty
of time with appetizers before entrees are ready. Through my own years in hospitality, I have seen a lot of bad manners, everything from a person screaming at a host for giving up their table when they showed up forty-five minutes late to couples sneaking off into the bathroom together after a few too many drinks. Of course, most people would agree all of that is bad behavior in a restaurant, but there are also small, subtle things you can do (or not do) to make life easier for the staff and make your experience seamless. I am personally of the belief that no one knows how to have a better experience in a restaurant than the people who work there, they’ve probably tasted all the food, they know which dishes are the most popular and they understand the best pacing of service.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember when dining out is to have a great time. I recently celebrated my marriage of 29 years, and I am still amazed at the actions of my spouse once in a while. How is it that after 29 years of marriage, you can still realize something new about your spouse and it can drive you a bit crazy? It can also add humor as some incidents become running jokes. Last September, we were driving out of a medical building where I had just seen a doc-

tor. While we were exiting the parking garage, a large man was walking towards us. The man had bandages all over his face and you can tell underneath the man had to have been in a serious accident as you could see bruises around the bandages. The man to me resembled Frankenstein and actually startled me. As we drove past, I said to my husband, “Oh my God, what do you think happened to that man?” My hus-
band replied, “What man?” I was truly shocked that he did not notice this man that had walked directly past our car. So, for the past few months it has become a running joke, and I ask if he had noticed something that to me was quite obvious but to him was nothing to see. I always start with, “I am sure you did not notice that…” Another quality that I have noticed is his lack of urgency. Nothing is an emergency and he NEVER moves quickly. We started carpooling this year and this is when I noticed how slow he moves in the morning. Today, it was bitter cold, and he could not find his hat. 1. I am not sure why his hat was not with his coat and gloves from yesterday and 2. While he was looking, there was not a pep in his step at all. Of course, I was dressed and waiting as patiently as I could. We have also gotten calls that a family member has had an emergency. I am up and out the door. His response, “I need to change.” Change? Why, because if we do go to St. John’s

NYC PROPERTY ESTIMATES Every January, the NYC Department of Finance mails property owners a “Notice of Property Value” which may be inaccurate. This notice provides an estimate of your property’s market value (among other things). It values one, two, and three family homes based upon sales of “similar” properties. However, the City does not inspect your home: The City does not take into consideration the specific location of your home – beach block? Bay block? Etc. They do not enter your home. They don’t know how many bedrooms or bathrooms you have. They don’t know how much parking you have, etc. They
don’t know the house’s condition – needs work? New kitchen? Consequently, your home could be overvalued or undervalued by a substantial amount because the similar properties which the City is comparing with your home may not be similar at all. However, the market value which the City uses determines your property tax bill. If you think your property’s tax value and assessment are inaccurate you can file an “Application for Correction” with the NYC Tax Commission: nyc.gov/html and then search for property taxes on the website. Resolution: Intentions It’s hard to believe we are already into our second week of January. Some of us don’t even feel like we had the opportunity to safely celebrate bringing in 2022. In the past my New Year’s resolutions never lasted long, so this year I changed my way of thinking to a list of many intentions or seed thoughts. I thought I would share some of them with you to give you inspiration if you are feeling called to change things up in your life in a meaningful way. First, I would like to thank all my teachers in life. I hope you know who you are. If I know
you, you have taught me something important, good or bad, they are all lessons in how to live a life with purpose. Imagine the things you want to see happen in your life. Just put your wish list out there to the universe and with some effort it may transform into a reality. Committing to a small act of kindness each day will change the way your feel. Your kindness may have a great impact in our world. The ocean is made of many drops. No drop is too small. Be clear with your words and listen more than you talk. Lis-
tening is a lost art. Sometimes we half listen to someone and think about what we want to say when the other person comes up for air. Many people are lonely who are living in quarantine, having a Zoom call is a great way to connect to others. The other night we had our Book Club via Zoom, and it was such a delight to listen to one another. Each person respects the speaker and listens quietly to the reflections of the book. It is a brilliant way to connect in times of isolation. Thank you, Sarah Arikian, for leading the discussion in our Book Clubs. We are so grateful for your kindness and generosity. Sarah volunteers her skillful execution of promoting the flow of conversation and eloquently keeps us on track of important themes within the book. This year, my intention is also to continue to move, breathe and teach yoga to everybody. I am humbled and honored to bring what I have learned from other teachers to this community. Creativity comes from what you find useful and then adaptation
breathes an organic sequence that makes sense for everyone in the room. What works for your body and soul? Ocean Bliss Yoga is grateful to the Belle Harbor Yacht Club for providing a beautiful space to practice yoga in. Whether we are in the Zoom Room or in-studio, we are together as a group who supports and encourages one another during these precarious times. We have hope even when we are ready to give up. Turkey Cutlet Marsala By Sharon Feldman
Ingredients: 1 package of turkey cutlets Flour Salt and pepper 1-1/2 cup sliced mushrooms ½ cup Marsala wine 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 cloves of minced garlic 2 teaspoons corn starch 4 tablespoons water 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1 tablespoon parsley Directions: Combine flour, salt and pepper and dredge chicken breasts in the seasoned flour. Shake off excess. Fry the
chicken in a little bit of oil in a hot skillet/pan. Fry 3-4 minutes per side. Remove cutlets to plate. In same pan, add the sliced mushrooms. Cook until soft. Add the marsala wine, lemon juice, minced garlic, butter, parsley and corn starch mixture. Cook until sauce has slightly thickened. Put cutlets back in pan for a few minutes. Serve on top of pasta or rice or mashed potatoes.

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
3 New Year’s Resolutions Have you ever read an entry from your diary, or something you scribbled on paper years ago, and wondered about your mindset at the time? Six years ago, I wrote the following, and while my determination to love the entire being of my daughter has burrowed even deeper roots, much has changed. Besides the obvious that my daughter is now 13 and I am too, well-aged, albeit youthfully (lol), admittedly my outlook has evolved into being a bit darker. I realize this growing moroseness has even reflected in my writing. Please forgive me. Each day, I pledge to rise above the “woe is me” mindset and instead, utilize every second of the day to express my gratitude for still being here with my daughter, and bountifully blessed to live in Rockaway. Folks, each morning we are blessed with a crisp, blank canvas. Let’s just try to fill it with more hope and love. “I hungrily await the dawn of 2017, a year of new beginnings professionally, mentally and spiritually. Also, our “artistic” daughter is going to be nine year this year! As I warm up to sprint full speed ahead, I realize that a change of mindset is intrinsically needed to fulfill all my goals. Not just with new vocational opportunities and health aspirations, but also as a mother struggling to keep sane in the capricious world of autism.”
Here are three resolutions that I vow to keep in the next 365 days: 1- I will not be afraid of or hide your autism. One day this past Summer, we went to the beach. As you pranced up and down the shoreline, with me chasing you like track Olympian Usain Bolt, I overheard a friend explaining that you are autistic. I looked back in anger. Why did he have to say that? In bewilderment he said, “What’s the big deal?” As I reflect on this, yes, what is the big deal? Why was I hiding your autism from other people? Admittedly, I was afraid of other people judging, ostracizing and belittling you. This is why writing this column in the beginning was so challenging and frightening. I was afraid of what people would think and say. Now my attitude has evolved to feeling proud. Yes, my daughter is autistic, which equates you to being special, smart and beautiful. 2- I will not allow other people’s attitude or comments ruin our fun times together. Truth be told, I am usually reluctant to take you to a social event. You love to run, jump, and gleefully flap your hands like a bird. There are some who are enchanted by your ballerina-like movements, and others…well, who are not. For example, when I took you to your first birthday party, you pranced to your
heart’s content, then unfortunately power-washed our hosts’ floor with your pee. We made a speedy exit. I texted my friend to thank her for inviting us and to apologize for the power wash. She simply responded, “Your daughter was like a beautiful fairy.” On another occasion, we attended another friend’s birthday party. Like any child, you were quiet at first, but then got antsy and started bouncing around. I turned all colors, when my friend growled, “Control your child!” We left. When we got home, I told granny the sequence of events. All she said was, “Consider the source.” Good advice. So yes, there are some folks, who are sensitive and open enough to embrace your entire being, while others are just too obtuse to even try. 3- I am going to cease asking the question why you are autistic, and instead embrace the notion, “Why not?” After countless wasted years looking into what
caused your autism, I’m going to give you the freedom to just be. Forgive me for placing you on diets, investing in a million ‘miracle’ nutritional supplements, sensory and educational props, taking you to every kind of doctor suggested. I promise, no more. I want to see you jump, flap, prance, giggle and fly like the beguiling fairy you are! Happy New Year Rockaway Times readers! Preeclampsia is one of the most serious health problems that affect pregnant women. It is a multisystem inflammatory syndrome that is often progressive but has an unclear causation. Worldwide, it is the second most common cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. Here in the U.S., it is a complication in about 4% of pregnancies. It also accounts for 6% of preterm births and 19% of medically indicated preterm births. The primary risk factors for preeclampsia include preeclampsia in previous pregnancies, type 1 or 2 diabetes, and chronic hypertension. Other risk factors include multifetal gestation, conception using assisted reproductive technology (e.g., IVF), autoimmune disease, kidney disease, nulliparity (1st pregnancy), high maternal BMI (obesity), family history of preeclampsia, and higher

Pregnancy Concern: Preeclampsia maternal age (over 35). Preeclampsia is defined by hypertension (BP over 140/90 in the second half of the pregnancy [>20 weeks]) and proteinuria (protein in the urine). In the absence of proteinuria, preeclampsia is diagnosed as hypertension with any of the following: thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), impaired liver function, kidney insufficiency, pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs), or brain or visual dysfunction. Not only does preeclampsia increase the risk of maternal and/or fetal death, it also interferes with the growth of the infant in the womb, known as intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), causing small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants. Interventions to manage preeclampsia include antihypertensive medications, early delivery, and magnesium sulfate treatment. The definitive treatment for preeclampsia is delivery of the placenta. Delivery alone, however, does not cure the manifestations of
preeclampsia as they may last days to weeks following delivery, with some cases presenting in the postpartum period and requiring additional intervention. The key to preeclampsia is preventing it from occurring, because once it occurs, the only cure is delivery of the infant. Preventative measures include blood pressure control, blood sugar control, and weight loss for obese women. In October 2020 the FDA released a safety drug communication warning that the use of anti-inflammatory drugs (i.e., Motrin, Aleve) around 20 weeks of gestation or later may cause rare but serious kidney problems in unborn infants, resulting in low levels of amniotic fluid. An exception to this warning is the use of low dose aspirin. Aspirin has anti-inflammatory properties plus it prevents platelets from clumping together to form blood clots, making it useful in preventing heart attacks and strokes. Be-
cause of its anti-inflammatory properties, aspirin has been found to be very effective in preventing the development of preeclampsia in high-risk women. So much so that in 2014, the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommended the use of low-dose (81 mg) aspirin after 12 weeks gestation as a preventative medication in women at highrisk for preeclampsia, provided that they do not have any condition that increases the risk of bleeding. This year, the USPSTF reaffirmed that recommendation based on additional clinical trials. They concluded that there is a “substantial net benefit of low-dose aspirin use” to reduce the risk of preeclampsia, preterm birth, SGA, IUGR, and perinatal mortality in pregnant women at high risk for preeclampsia. Community Board Applications Now Open Want to be more involved in the community and have a say in what happens here? Consider joining Community Board 14. Applications are now open through Wednesday, February 16. Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. is again accepting applications from qualified and civic-minded individuals interested in serving on their local community board, which play an important advisory role in considering land use and zoning matters in their respective districts under the City’s Uniform Land Use Review Procedure. The 2022 community board application, like the previous year’s groundbreaking iteration, can be filled out online, ensuring prospective applicants can complete the process quickly and easily, again allowing for a more diverse applicant pool and safer application process in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s online application again requires neither notarization nor in-person
delivery to the Queens Borough President’s Office. “Government is more accountable when it works in close collaboration with the communities it is sworn to serve, and it is most effective when the full demographic spectrum of each and every neighborhood is justly represented,” Richards said. “I look forward to continuing the great strides we made last year in ensuring our 14 Queens community boards truly look and feel like the neighborhoods they represent, and I encourage anyone with an interest in community service to apply.” The community board application is available online at www.queensbp.org/community-boards. The deadline to submit the electronic application is Wednesday, February 16, 2022. This deadline applies to both new applicants and existing community board members seeking an additional term. For the upcoming round of appointments, the two-year term of service will begin on Friday, April 1, 2022.
Prior to Borough President Richards assuming office in December 2020, significant demographic inequalities existed within each of the 14 community boards in Queens. The Borough President worked to correct that underrepresentation, beginning with the 2021 application process. Of his 110 first-time appointees, 62.4 percent were women — a 19.1-point increase from the prior rate of female community board membership — while 74.3 percent of firsttime appointees were 45 years old or younger and 43.1 percent were no older than 35. Compared to 2020 board membership, the 2021 appointee class also had greater percentages of those who self-identify as Latinx/Hispanic (24.8%), African American/Black (24.8%), immigrant (17.4%), South Asian (14.7%), East Asian/Pacific Islander (11%) and LGBTQIA+ (8.3%). In total, the revamped application process led to a diverse pool of over 900 applicants, including
more than 700 people who were not existing members of a community board, a near-threefold increase from 2020. There are 59 community boards citywide, including 14 in Queens, and each hold monthly full membership meetings. The boards also hold hearings and issue recommendations about the City budget, municipal service delivery and numerous other matters that impact their communities. All Queens community board members are appointed by the Queens Borough President, pursuant to the City Charter, with half of the appointments nominated by the City Councilmembers representing their respective Community Districts. Each board has up to 50 unsalaried members, with each member serving a two-year term. All community board members who wish to continue serving on a board are required to reapply at the conclusion of their two-year term and are subject to review and reconsideration.

Wrestle Talk WHAT’S UP WITH WWE By Eric Jayden
So, where do I begin? The WWE has done another round of releases and this time they released Samoa Joe, Road Dogg Jesse James and William Regal plus a host of other talent. Now, it's no secret that I have made my views on the WWE setting itself up for sale by reducing its labor and operations costs, all the while the WWE keeps stating that the releases were made because of budgetary costs. An excuse coming from a company that still makes money with not one but two lucrative network deals from FOX and the USA Network which is in the billions and the company is in a position that they can command 4 to 5, possibly 6 billion dollars purchase price. Now, with that being said and the continuous releasing of talent going on, the question I raise is: Is the WWE still a viable com-
pany to work for? The WWE has openly stated it created a program to recruit college athletes opting to move away from the traditional hiring of established Journey Men/ Women Wrestlers from the Independent Wrestling Promotions. The WWE sees a better way of doing business is to recruit athletes from non-wrestling backgrounds so they can mold them
to what a WWE Superstar should look, act and perform like. In my book, it looks like this program only offers the WWE the opportunity to build robots, better yet sport entertainment robots. The good part of recruiting talent from the wrestling world is that you get talent that is dedicated and has experience in the pro wrestling business. Cutting out potential Journey Men/Women
out of the equation leaves me to wonder once again: Is the WWE a trustworthy company to work for? Many of the talent that were released left their homes and jobs to move to Florida to work for the WWE and now they are displaced because of potentially false promises made when they were signed to a contract. Imagine being offered a contract and you move your entire life to Florida and three months later they just let you go...??? Is that fair? Is that just? In my book, that is far from being fair. This is just downright wrong. I feel for many of my fellow wrestlers and friends who dream of making it to the WWE and achieving their dreams.
