Photo Contest Being Planned This is a little like putting up Christmas lights before Thanksgiving but we figured we’d give you a heads up because, well, there's still time to take great photos. The Fifth Annual Rockaway Times Photo Contest will happen again and this year we’re expecting it to be back in all its glory with few or no restrictions. The City Parks Department has confirmed it’s a go and with their blessing we’re shooting for an official contest launch date in February. If things go according to plan, we’ll chose a Top 30 sometime in late April or early May and have those photos blown up to poster size so they can adorn the boardwalk railings by Memorial Day, May 31. At this point, we have not decided upon categories (and maybe this year will be no categories at all!). One thing is for sure, the photos you sub-
mit must be of high resolution. If it’s the least bit grainy, we won’t be able to consider it because the quality suffers when photos are enlarged. So, make sure your phone or camera is set to take high quality photos. Note that The Rockaway Times assumes the right to use any photo contest entries as they see fit. Mostly this means your photo may also have a chance to be in the paper or even grace the cover of The Rockaway Times’ Summer Guide. Photo credit will be given, but no other compensation will be offered. Photos that are submitted to Local Color can also be submitted into the contest. Stay tuned for updates and details. In the meantime, get snapping! And please keep sending photos for our Local Color page –plenty of those are contest worthy!

A local surveyor was hired in 2020 to undertake a survey of the park boundary in the Neponsit and Broad Channel areas of the park. The survey identified some areas of concern, which are now under investigation. In general, after an investigation is completed, the park works with the landowners to address next steps if encroachments are confirmed.

Want to have a say in what happens in the community? Consider becoming a member of Community Board 14. Applications are now open and being accepted through February 19. Queens Borough President Donovan Richards is now accepting applications from qualified and civic-minded individuals interested in serving on one of the borough’s 14 Community Boards, which play an important advisory role in considering land use and zoning matters in their respective districts. The 2021 community board application has been digitized to ensure the process can be completed much quicker and easier, allowing for a more diverse applicant pool and a safer application process in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s electronic application must be completed and submitted online, requiring neither notarization nor in-person delivery to the Queens Borough President’s Office. “Government is more effective and accountable not only when it works hand-in-hand with the
communities it is sworn to serve, but when the full tapestry of each and every neighborhood is justly represented within that government,” Richards said. The Community Board membership application is available online at www.queensbp.org/ community-boards. The deadline for prospective and current Community Board members to submit the electronic application is Friday, February 19. For the upcoming round of appointments, the two-year term of service will begin on Thursday, April 1, 2021. Community Boards hold monthly full membership meetings. The Boards also hold hearings and issue recommendations about the City budget, municipal service delivery and numerous other matters that impact their communities. All Queens Community Board members are appointed by the Queens Borough President, pursuant to the City Charter, with half of the appointments nominated by City Councilmembers. Each Board has up to 50 unsalaried members, with each member serving a two-year term.

In Search of Vietnam Tom By Katie McFadden
Following up with our recent story about a letter being reunited with U.S. Marine Thomas Johnston, another reader passed along a letter from someone trying to locate another fellow veteran Tom. Thomas Greene, of Rockaway, recently received a letter at his home that was meant for a Thomas A. Green. A veteran named Don Ringwood is on a search for a fellow Vietnam Veteran who supposedly has connections to Rockaway. Don Ringwood’s letter read: “This is Tom Green in 1971. We are at Long Binh, Vietnam. We are waiting for our plane ride Home. We got in country the same day and are going home the same day. We were in the 240th Assault Helicopter Company and were both on Night Crew. I have been trying to find the 240th Night Crew. I have found Joe Troyer, Bob Kelley, Bob Fink, Bob Holste,
Richard Gallegos and myself. Kelley is outside Boston and Fink in upstate NY are not too far from Tom. “Tom would talk about Rockaway, Far Rockaway and Rockaway Beach. So that is where I am looking. I have been look-
ing on and off now for a number of years. I have sent a number of e-mails and texts out to e-mail addresses and cell numbers that I got off the internet. “What I have is Thomas A Green, last four of his SS# xx78. I think he was a little younger
than me. I'm 72, born in May of 1948. I think I picked up a picture of Tom in a year of Arlington, Virginia Washington-Lee Days High School 1966. He was a sophomore. But could not find him in the ‘67 or ‘68 yearbooks. I think that is when the family moved to Rockaway. That would make Tom 69 or 70, I think. “I last saw Tom in the San Francisco Airport just before Easter 1971. I am Don Ringwood. My address is 45503 State Route 23 E. Sprague, Washington 99032. My cell 509- 994-6934 call or text. My e-mail dwr1948@hotmail.com. Any help to get us in touch with Tom or news would be appreciated. My army paperwork shows Thomas A. Green #xx78. -Don Ringwood. If anyone has any information about Thomas Green, feel free to reach out to us (718-6463030 or editor@rockawaytimes. com), or to Don Ringwood directly at the contact information listed above.

***** Sure seems like 2020 will be at least 14 months long. ***** Mike Scala, a Democrat who ran for City Council in 2017 opposing Eric Ulrich, is running again. He won’t be facing an incumbent this time around but there will be a lot of others in the race. Scala lives in Howard Beach but he’s in Rockaway often enough to be an almost local. He’s a lawyer who helped fight against the proposed homeless shelter on Beach 101st Street and has been a vocal advocate for QueensRail and expanded ferry service. ***** Jazmine Outlaw is the new Executive Director of the Rockaway Youth Task Force. We wish her and the group the very best as they move past the Milan Taylor era.
***** Beach Channel High School has been designated as a vaccine site. ***** That’s not the ticket. Recently The RT reported that the Rockaway Theatre Company, though closed due COVID, is alive and well with online workshops and performances and planned renovations. According to RTC though they still have not been paid by Brown Paper Tickets for the 3-4 shows they staged before the pandemic. In fact, a November article in The San Francisco Chronicle states the online Seattle-based vendor owes $6.75 million to arts groups, event producers, venues and theatre companies all across the country for tickets sold through its service. ***** Well, it’s not lawyer-speak. And he’s not a magician. The man who allegedly stole the Speaker of the House’s lectern during last week’s riot at the Capitol was arrested. His lawyer addressed the media and said: “You have a photograph of our client in a
building, unauthorized to be there, with what appears to be a podium or a lectern, I’m not exactly sure which one it is called. But that’s what we have.” When a reporter says, “Obviously, that’s a problem for you as a defense attorney.” The lawyer responds: “Yes. I’m not a magician. We’ve got a photograph of our client in what appears to be inside a federal building or inside the Capitol with federal property.” No one asked if the client would be taking the stand. ***** There are just a few days left until Joe Biden is inaugurated as President. We hope a peaceful transition of power occurs. A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family of Officer Brian Sicknick, the Capitol Policeman who died after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol last week. Another officer is managing the fund. If you’d like to donate, go to: gofundme.com/f/95xqrr-officer-brian-d-sicknick-memorial ***** There was good news from Washington recently. The latest
The Rockaway Times stimulus bill included funds for the continuing sand replenishment of Rockaway beaches. The next round of sand will come via the Sandy relief bill but the next 50 years is covered by the stimulus bill that was just signed. Rep. Gregory Meeks said: I’m proud that we were able to secure funds for decades of sand replenishment which will help protect our community against hurricanes and storms. I will continue working to provide the Army Corps of Engineers with the resources necessary to make our shore resilient, including during the next appropriations process.” ***** Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato was appointed as the Assistant Majority Whip to the New York State Assembly Majority Conference by Assembly Speaker Carl. E. Heastie (D-Bronx). The appointment puts Pheffer Amato in a leadership position within the Democratic conference, as she begins her third term after winning re-election last November.

Community Board 14 January Meeting Recap By Katie McFadden
The first Community Board 14 meeting of 2021 was full of information, updates, concerns and information from the recent Parks Committee meeting. The meeting, held virtually on Zoom on Tuesday, January 13, and attended by nearly 80 people, opened with District Manager Jonathan Gaska advising the community of an upcoming street disruption starting January 15 between Beach 102nd Street and Beach 105th Street along Rockaway Freeway. The westbound lane will be closed on weeknights from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. and weekends from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., for five weeks, as PSEG will be making upgrades along the Freeway. Gaska then spoke of some land use issues that the board will be seeing in the future. Among these will be an affordable housing building with up to 84 units on Beach 67th Street, north of Beach Channel Drive; a storage facility at 106-02 Rockaway Beach Blvd; a development at 25-46 Rockaway Beach Blvd.; another self-storage facility at 350 Beach 70th Street; a rezoning at 133 Beach 116th Street to allow for a gym; and highrise buildings and townhouses planned near Beach 62nd Street. “We will be busy this year,” Gaska said. In her report, Chairwoman Dolores Orr spoke about the upcoming special election for City Council District 31 as former councilman Donovan Richards is now the Queens Borough President. The election will take place for those in District 31 on February 23, but early voting will be open from February 13 through 21. This election will be somewhat of a test as it will be the first time Rockaway will experience ranked-choice voting. Orr also spoke about a recent City Planning Coastal Resiliency meeting and advised the Board that all of the changes that they recommended during City Planning’s visit to CB14 were mostly ignored, so Orr voted against their plan. Lastly, she advised everyone that Community Board 14 applications are now open and those interested in applying must do so online.
Elected official representatives then provided some updates from their various offices. Robby Schwach of Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office let the community know about the free coronavirus testing being offered at their office on Mondays and Tuesdays this month. More than 750 people have taken advantage of this so far. He also said that on Friday, Beach Channel High School will open as a local Covid vaccine distribution site. Those in categories 1A and 1B are eligible to make appointments. A rep from Senator James Sanders’ office said on January 21 at 6 p.m., he is holding a faith-based conversation about the vaccine. The senator is also working on legislation including on stock transfer tax, public banking and no knock warrants. She also provided a statement from Sanders condemning last week’s attacks on the U.S. Capitol. Representatives from Senator Addabbo, Borough President Richards, Assembly member Stacey Pheffer Amato, District Attorney Melinda Katz and NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer’s office were also on hand. The meeting was then open to public speaking, which included four speakers. Democratic District Leader Lew Simon spoke the work he’s done with fellow District Leader Jeannette Garramone to distribute groceries to seniors and the disabled from Beach 62nd to Neponsit and Broad Channel. The Good Government Democratic Club will be having virtual meetings with candidates that will be running for citywide offices this year. Simon also provided his phone number for those who need assistance: 718-945-1216. Matt Walker, the community outreach representative for JFK Airport said they are pre-screening for job opportunities at the airport including warehouse agents, security guards, snow removal drivers, supervisory positions in catering, warehouse and stock, a senior accountant, and they will be having job fairs in the future. If anyone is interested, contact Matt at mwalker@ caony.com or 347-562-2075. Maribel Araujo spoke on behalf of the Rockaway Beach Club

and the recent decision by the Parks Department to award competitors Rockaway Beach Bazaar the new contract for the boardwalk concessions. She thanked the community for the support they received during a recent hearing on the matter. Jennifer Jones, a local artist, spoke about a book she will be publishing through a grant she received and she’s looking for contributors. For info, email Rockawaydreamexchange@gmail.com Next up was the report from the Parks and Public Safety Committee on two recently discussed items including Thursby Basin Park, a new community park proposed for Beach 62nd63rd Streets on Thursby Avenue, and a mini soccer pitch on the grounds of Scholars’ Academy. Before discussing, Jose Velez provided some updates from the Army Corps of Engineers, who said jetties will be placed every five blocks instead of every three, that they’re working on the contract for the reinforced dune and sand replenishment, which they hope to award in the fall, as well as a plan for Jamaica Bay protection features, which they will give an update on next month. Thursby Basin Park is a capital project funded by $12.5 million. It will include new sidewalks and curbs, multiple entrances, natural features, a walking trail, drinking fountains, shower sprays, game tables, a ping pong table, multiple seating areas, a ramp to the shoreline for kayaking, new plantings, 90 trees, children play areas, a water play area, a picnic area, shaded seating areas and an overlook. A meeting was held regarding this park in March 2020 and all elements were requested by the community. After discussion, a motion was made to support the project as presented and it received a unanimous vote of support from the Board. Anticipated construction date start is 2023. Next was the discussion of bringing a mini soccer field to 302 Beach 104th Street as part of the New York City Soccer Initiative from private funding through various soccer associations. The field is tiny and
will occupy a space about the size of a basketball court. The field will be closed to the public during school hours. Its anticipated use will be three days a week with programming and gear provided by the U.S. Soccer Foundation. Installation takes about six to eight weeks. After school hours, children from the community will be able to use the field. The project is fully supported by the school administration. As this initiative aims to bring 50 such fields to New York City, the Board requested additional locations in Rockaway, but most locations are already determined. Several questions followed but most agreed it should be approved since it has support from Scholars’ Academy. A motion was made to send a letter of support for the project. One board member abstained, but the rest approved the support letter. Outside of the agenda items, questions were brought up regarding the status of various Parks projects that are in the works along Shore Front Parkway and Bay Breeze Park. The committee had requested Parks to send regular updates about each project. Issues were also brought up about emergency sand replenishment, but Parks reiterated that these projects require a 24-month procurement. The committee urged Parks to stay on top of this so the community doesn’t find out at the last minute that beaches will be closed. The committee also asked Parks if community input was taken into consideration during their selection of the boardwalk concession contractor. Parks said it was, and Rockaway Beach Club scored high on community input, but there were five deciding factors and they did not score as high in these other factors. Lola Star still maintains the contract for retail carts along the boardwalk and has another year, but it is unlikely she will reapply for the contract since closing her Beach 116th location. The meeting continued with new and old business. Much of this conversation included the Arverne East Project.

Concessions Hearing Gets Heated By Katie McFadden
A Franchise and Concession Review Committee hearing on Monday, January 11, may have set a record for public comment. After all, it was regarding a contract that has garnered mass interest after the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation announced its intent to award Rockaway Beach Bazaar a 15-year contract for the Rockaway boardwalk concessions, over former concessionaires, Rockaway Beach Club. On December 23, NYC Parks informed those who in late 2019, applied for a competitive Request for Proposals for contractors to operate the three boardwalk cafes and 20 satellite sites along the boardwalk, of their final decision. Parks selected Rockaway Beach Bazaar, owned by Aaron Broudo and Belvy Klein, who since 2015, have operated the concessions at Riis Park. On Monday, January 11, the Mayor’s Office of Contract Services (MOCS) held a public hearing to collect feedback on the Parks Department’s decision. What they might not have anticipated was how much interest this subject would garner. It started to become clear when a few days prior, those who support Rockaway Beach Club, the former concessionaires, rallied on social media to send written testimony to MOCS ahead of the meeting stating their support for Rockaway Beach Club, and then joined Monday’s meeting which was held by phone. According to MOCS, in Fiscal Year 2020, MOCS held 23 contract hearings, which resulted in 325 people attending those hearings for the entire year. Monday’s hearing regarding the Rockaway concessions had more than 200 people on the call, and more than 2,000 emails of written testimony had been sent regarding the subject ahead of the hearing. Due to time constraints, only a few dozen callers were called upon to state their case, and those who spoke, spoke overwhelmingly about their disagreement with Parks’ decision and why they believe Rockaway
Beach Club should continue to keep the party going at the concessions. Ahead of public speaking, Alan Swisher of the Queens Borough President’s office spoke, saying their office had reviewed some of the written testimony and urged the Parks Department to take it seriously and to work with the Borough President’s office to ensure they’re doing what they can to support local businesses. “I hope the Parks Department can and will respond to some of the valid concerns that folks have raised about the selection process and potential impact of this agreement on existing vendors,” Swisher said. This was followed up by a representative from the Parks Department, who did not identify himself, but did speak about the selection process. “In soliciting, Parks received several proposals. It was a highly competitive solicitation. In this case, Rockaway Beach Bazaar LLC had the highest rated proposal. Rockaway Beach Bazaar currently operates at nearby Jacob Riis Beach under an agreement with the National Park Service and has been there for five years. This proposal includes several improvements and enhancements planned for this concession including a year-round service at Beach 97th street, free WIFI on the boardwalk and the addition of new locations that have been requested by residents and visitors alike. For example, stakeholders had requested an inclusion of new food concessions in the Arverne neighborhood of the Rockaways and this is one location where our new concessionaire plans to expand. Rockaway Beach Bazaar is committed to inviting and has already extended invitations for the sublicensees from the prior season to return in order to maintain the existing ambiance,” the Parks rep said. “In evaluating the proposals, the selection committee used the following criteria which was defined in the RFP: 1) the proposed capital improvement investment and design. 2) the planned operations 3) Operating experience 4) the fee of-

fer, and 5) managing capability. While the solicitation was competitive, when considering all of this criteria, Rockaway Beach Bazaar had the superior proposal. NYC Parks looks forward to partnering with our concessionaire to continue to provide high quality of services to the public at Rockaway Beach.” The first caller had a different bone to pick than many that followed. Frank Raffaele, a partner for Rockaway Glow, another company that applied for the proposal, stated that he believed the selection process was biased. “Had it not been for the personal bias of two of the three members making up a full 66.67 percent of the selection committee, and if we were the highest rated proposal, we would have provided an extra $3 million to the city of New York and would have kept local operators directly in this concession,” Raffaele said. “The overwhelming majority of the selection committee had an irrefutable and undeniable bias against Rockaway Glow and there was no way that a fair process could have been carried through.” Raffaele went on to explain that as a former concessionaire who has done business with Parks, that his proposal was not fairly considered due to a legal matter that concerns two of the members who were allegedly on the selection committee. Due to this, Raffaele requested that the RFP be reissued and reviewed without bias, or this issue may be addressed in court. Later in the call, Yarden Flatow, of Cuisine by Claudette’s, also a partner in Rockaway Glow, reiterated this, saying “The whole interview process was inherently biased and self-serving to the department.” Much of the remaining calls
came from Rockaway residents, Rockaway Beach Club concession employees, visitors from Brooklyn and mainland Queens and even a caller from San Francisco, who voiced their concerns over the contract being awarded to Rockaway Beach Bazaar. Several spoke on behalf of the Rockaway Beach Club and the work that they did to revitalize the boardwalk concessions and “putting Rockaway on the map” since they took over in 2011, despite facing many challenges including Hurricane Irene, Hurricane Sandy, beach closures and the latest challenge of the coronavirus pandemic. One caller cited the latter as a reason they believe Parks selected Rockaway Beach Bazaar’s offer starting at $300,000+ a year, as opposed to Rockaway Beach Club, which had been paying a little over $100,000 at the end of their contract. “We are aware there’s a Covid related budget shortfall the city is suffering, and this feels like an attempt to make up a small portion of that shortfall on the back of working-class New Yorkers,” Martha Woolever said. Rockaway Beach Bazaar’s proposed fee was a subject of many concerns from callers. Some said they believe the $300,000+ a year is not feasible. “The current proposal $300,000 for rent is unrealistic given the Rockaway concessions are five or six month businesses. Many busy Manhattan restaurants don’t meet this revenue,” Billy Barlow said. Many said this increased fee may fall back on the vendors, saying they would have to pay higher rents and charge higher prices for food items to make up the difference. Among those to express this concern were those who have experience running the boardwalk concessions including Maribel Araujo and Andrew Day Field of Rockaway Beach Club. In a joint statement read by Araujo, Field and Michael Perzy Powers, the general manager of Low Tide Bar, the group expressed how they helped Continued on page 15
The Rockaway Times
CONCESSIONS HEARING Continued from Page 14 transform the former concessions from “poorly run snack bars selling high processed junk food into a destination that offers diverse food and beverage options and live entertainment that have attracted people of all walks and races to Rockaway Beach. Araujo spoke of how many businesses that got their start under Rockaway Beach Club have gone on to open year-round businesses in the Rockaway community, like Super Burrito. They said that those invested in Rockaway Beach Club are now local residents. Field spoke of Bazaar’s proposal saying, “The notable differences have to do with money—a figure so high, we don’t see how it will be paid without massive retail price increases and higher vendor subrents he said. Powers spoke of the community support Rockaway Beach Club has received, adding, “Why are we not being allowed to continue our work?
THURSDAY, JANUARY 14, 2021 Others argued that they didn’t believe it was fair that Rockaway Beach Bazaar would have a monopoly over a majority of the beachfront concessions on the peninsula, if their contract in Riis Park continues. Others, including Jordan Wolf, a concessionaire on Beach 97th Street said they don’t even want to consider doing business with Rockaway Beach Bazaar. “I do not wish to work with the new company, Wolf said. Belvy Klein and Aaron Broudo of Rockaway Beach Bazaar were called upon late in the call to provide testimony. “We appreciate the opportunity and look forward to working together with the NYC Parks Department and the Rockaway community, Broudo said. They spoke of their 11-year track record in the business, including running Riis since 2015, and how they plan to continue what they’ve done on the boardwalk. Adressing their fee proposal, Broudo said, “Anyone had the opportunity to put in offers. There were higher
bids than ours, and lower bids and when we submitted our bid, we went with the numbers that we thought would be competitive for a 15-year-lease for a NYC Public Park. Broudo was interrupted by someone shouting, “except you don’t know anything and you don’t know how to run a business! As a result, Broudo’s statement was paused as the meeting reps were forced to mute all other callers. Broudo continued saying, “We’re big fans of what the Rockaway Beach Club has done. We want to retain as many of the previous vendors as possible. Nobody here is looking to displace anybody, he said. Following his statement, someone else shouted, “Lying devil, we know where you sleep! The call ended with a statement from Mr. Katsor of the NYC Comptroller’s office, who expressed concern over the testimonies. “We find a great deal of the testimony expressed by everyone today against the reward very disconcerting. Before Parks moves
Page 15 forward with finalizing this award, we strongly urge the agency to carefully consider and satisfactorily address all testimony presented here today. We would like to make it clear the comptroller’s office will be following up with Parks on various aspects of this testimony and we will be reviewing any contract submitted to this office closely, including the process used to award the concession, he said. As the meeting was called to an end, those who were not called on to testify began shouting over the call. One man said, “I testify that Aaron Broudo can burn in hell! As we go to press, a final decision about the contract has not been made. The Rockaway Times reached out to the Parks Department to ask if the testimony would be considered in their final decision. A spokesperson replied, “Yes—we will take all testimony into consideration—including that made in person during the hearing and that were submitted in writing.

My Rescue Story: When Animal Advocates Save Humans Too By Roberta Klein
My name is Roberta Klein. I am 67 years young and have late-stage esophageal cancer. I am presently receiving home hospice care in the home I grew up in, in my beloved Belle Harbor. You may have seen me around town over the years on my salmon-colored bicycle with large baskets, doing my local shopping. I am also affectionately known as the "Cat Lady." Over a decade ago, I found a small, adorable kitten hiding under a bush in my front yard ... and that is how it all began. After taking care of Thomasina for six months, I noticed that she was pregnant. After a couple of litters, I was overwhelmed with many cats. I knew that I had to do something before she became pregnant again. I was directed by 311 to call The Mayor's Alliance for Animals, who referred me to a rescuer named Raquel Battle in mainland Queens. She arrived with nine traps to TNR (trap/neuter/return) my beloved cat family and arranged for a mobile clinic to perform the surgeries right outside of my door. I had never seen anything like it! My cats, albeit terrified, were all humanely trapped and recovered before being released to their home on my property. That was March 9, 2009. Many years later, Raquel would become one of several people instrumental in assisting me to care for my cats in the midst of an urgent situation. I spent many years enjoying my healthy, spayed and neutered cat family, along with mourning the loss of several of them over time. Several would
still be with me after 10 years, healthy and thriving, and living peacefully in my home. But things dramatically changed for me on April 5, 2018, when I received the heartbreaking news that I had cancer. My immediate concern was not for myself, but for my cats. For the past couple of years, my health has steadily declined, and I no longer have the strength to take care of my cat's daily needs. I knew that my fur children, who I loved and adored, needed to be placed with loving families before I would leave this world. I called several animal rescue groups and shelters for help, but they all declined to help me. "Sorry, but we're not taking cats at this time," was the response I got used to hearing. I heard that during the lockdowns many New Yorkers were fostering and adopting at record rates, so I was hopeful that I would get the help I needed, but I kept on getting turned down. I then reached back out to Raquel, who had since started her own rescue organization called Fur Real NYC, Inc., along with Rockaway-based Noah's Ark Animal Rescue NY, Inc. In early January 2021, Scott Ruscillo, Community Outreach Coordinator of Noah's Ark, and Laura Kiburis of the Noah's Ark team, responded

with empathy and care, and swiftly mobilized to pick up and transport my cats to Fur Real NYC, Inc., who had them examined and treated at their vet. Through further collaboration with yet another local rescue group, Brooklyn-based Lincoln Terrace Park Cats, my cats were lovingly placed into foster homes as they wait for adopters who are sympathetic to the plight of senior cats. Although I was unable to pay for their services, I was treated with the utmost respect, understanding, and love by all parties involved. I'd like to utilize this opportunity to express my appreciation for all of them. Please consider helping local animal rescue groups that support New York City pet parents in their time of need. I can
now focus on my health knowing that my fur kids are safe and cared for in loving hands. People who help animals are often the very ones to offer extensive help to their fellow humans as well. Through volunteering, adopting, fostering, and donating, we can show these life savers our appreciation and gratitude. Get Your Queens Library To-Go By Dan Guarino
Looking for a good book, movie, CD, free WIFI spot, online programs for adults, kids and the family? The Queens Library has you covered. The pandemic may have closed many Queens Public Library (QPL) branches, but as we all are, they have adapted to changed times. They’ve been offering select “To-Go” services at numerous branches, including Peninsula, 92-25 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, and Arverne, 312 Beach 54th Street, for several months now. How does it work? First go to QueensLibrary.org. If you already have a library account, you can search through the millions of items in their catalogue. Select what you’d like, click “Request” then click Peninsula or Arverne under Location. Your items will be sent to that branch. You’ll even get an email when it’s ready for pick up. They will hold items for 15 days for
you. Don’t have an online account? You can sign up for one online. Don’t have a library card? Apply online. You can also request materials on the QPL mobile app or by calling Telephone Reference at 718-990-0728 or 718-990-0714. About 35 branches are now open for return and pick-up services only. You will have to wear a mask and observe social distancing when heading to the library. Staff are observing health protocols and each library is closed for one hour each day for cleaning. Hours at all branches are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., closed 1-2 p.m. Tuesday 1-5 p.m. Thursday 12-7 p.m., closed 3-4 p.m. Closed Sundays. Even though you can’t browse through the stacks, sit for hours inside or attend library events, there is still plenty you can do right from home. With QPLAnywhere, the QPL
says, “You are always connected to the library. Our digital media, including books, music, and more, is available 24/7 and our virtual programs can be accessed anywhere.” Like what? Their digital media offers access to all types of e-content including e-books, e-audiobooks, magazines, music, newspapers and courses. Their on-demand videos feature movies, concerts, courses, tutorials and more. There is also e-learning, the Queens history audio and video collection, Ask-A-Librarian services and even online volunteering. Miss those library meeting room programs? Check the QPL calendar. Faster than you can say ‘Zoom,’ you will find virtual choices like Watercolors for Beginners, the Moms On The Move—Supporting Each Other discussion group, a Creative Aging art series, the Great Stories Club and the Funny Poetry
Show, to name a few. Free WIFI services are also available up to 150 feet outside Arverne, Peninsula and the still closed Broad Channel branch. By the way, there will be no fines on any library materials until July 1, 2021 at the earliest. Plus all blocks on library cards with fees of $15 have been lifted until further notice. Why wait? Fire up your computer, app or tablet, head to QueensLibrary.org, whip out that yellow-gold library card and let the book, music, video, workshop and program enjoyment begin! Photo by Dan Guarino

Gateway Issues RFEI for Beach Clubs Gateway National Recreation Area (Gateway) is releasing a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) in connection with the Silver Gull Beach Club and the Breezy Point Surf Club currently managed under contracts which expire December 31, 2021. The RFEI was developed to gather information from the public and potential operators about how the park might add additional services to improve the visitor experience at Silver Gull Beach Club and Breezy Point Surf Club in the National Parks Services’ (NPS) Jamaica Bay Unit.
Going forward, the Beach Clubs will continue to offer the services park visitors have come to enjoy throughout the many years of operations. This RFEI is intended to collect information about how Gateway might improve visitors Beach Club experiences. This RFEI is not a formal offering for the award of any legal authorization and will aid NPS in developing a competitive solicitation in the future. Some of the concepts the park is exploring, as envisioned in the park’s General Management Plan, include providing a multi-day experience, offering
camping and overnight opportunities for park visitors, and expanding the availability of sports programs, which may include relocating the Fort Tilden sports fields. Additionally, the park welcomes feedback from the public about how we might improve your Beach Club experience. The RFEI (www.nps.gov/gate) was published on January 11, 2021. Gateway seeks public engagement regarding the following questions: Should Gateway incorporate all organized sports fields from Fort Tilden to the Beach cubs? Should Gateway incorporate camping at either
Silver Gull Beach Club or Breezy Point Surf Club? Should Gateway authorize any overnight use (such as conversion of a limited number of cabanas) at either the Silver Gull Beach Club or Breezy Point Surf Club? What additional services would you like to see at the Beach Clubs? Please send feedback and any comments to Gateway_Feedback@nps.gov on or before March 12, 2021, 1 p.m. Interested respondents can submit questions and arrange site visits by emailing Gateway_BMD@nps. gov.

MAKE EVERY DAY COUNT As I write this, it is day 10 of 365. Somewhere around day three, I started bringing “make every day count to my morning contemplations. Time seems to be flying and I felt a need to name things that I do rather than the days being blurry falling one into the next. I realized that asking the question in the morning, “what can I do today that will nourish my wellbeing and fulfill this intention to make every day count? was a way to get there. Manifesting that something
and then acknowledging it at the end of the day or before sleep makes our lives count. It can be actions very small or very large (in your own judgment), like acts of kindness, research for something you have been wanting to do, writing letters, connecting with people, creating art, music, food, baked goods, making something, meditating, practicing yoga, taking a walk, etc. So, you see I’m not talking about anything of paramount importance, just everyday things. We may do all of these things

on a regular basis but the key for me is knowing in my mind and feeling in my heart that they are fulfilling my life somehow and making my life have meaning - whatever that is for me. The personal acknowledgement of the good deed or course of study or sharing a meal or whatever it is, creates feelings which feed our parasympathetic nervous system to simply make us feel good. So it is kind of a mix of intention and physical manifestation. I say and have often said in this column, “what we think, say, feel, do become a part of us making lasting imprints in our psyche (conscious and unconscious). So the more we do what is good for us, the better our overall health - in mind, body and heart - will be. Another part of this is letting go of things that do not serve us. Just like a plant releases leaves so that new growth can come forth, letting go of what doesn’t serve us releases the energy we expend for it so that our energy can be used for nourishment
Page 25 and fulfillment. This morning, one of my contemplations was to write about this so I could share something positive with all of the readers of this column in the hope that it sparks something in you to make your life fuller. This evening I will mark it, say it to myself and most likely feel content. We have this power to create contentment in our lives even with small things. It doesn’t take much. Cultivating positives and acknowledging them equals a day to be counted! So “make every day count or as my good friend says at the end of her voicemail message “make it a great day! “Peace, equality, justice, love, compassion, purpose, call it all in. Call in these powerful vibrations and allow them to be birthed inside of you for yourself and for all of humanity. Forever Conscious May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Rockin’ and Stockin’ STREAMING AND STOCKS By JP Stathis
Long gone are the days of making plans to head to the record store to buy new albums when they are released or browsing the store to add to your collection. Now we all have the luxury of downloading music straight to our devices as soon as it is available. I can remember my old man saying countless times he wasn’t crazy about an album, but it had a few really good tracks that he liked. Back then, you had no choice but to buy the entire album. I also remember as a kid listening to the radio and trying to tape songs when they came on. That was challenging but also rewarding. Today, music is instant. We have the option to either pay a monthly streaming subscription (via Spotify or Apple Music) or purchasing individual songs and entire albums (via iTunes). From what I have seen, the younger generation streams their music and the older generations prefer to own their music. I still prefer the latter. Streaming services are similar to a car lease, you pay a monthly fee ($9.99) to access their entire music catalog which is enticing, but at the end of the contract you own nothing. The other option offers a free service which plays ads in between every few songs, but the catch is you can’t pick individual songs. On the other hand, once you buy a song or album (usually .99 or $9.99),
you own that for life. An interesting stat that I found while researching is that artists earn somewhere around $.005 per stream, so they only make $5 for every 1,000 streams. However, many artists will make .60 -.70 per song or $6-7 per album sold on iTunes, so clearly it benefits them for fans to buy their music rather than renting it, so buyer beware if you are streaming. I anticipate a flood of new material to be released in 2021 since there was no touring in 2020 and music lovers are itching for something to get excited about. I would assume a lot of artists spent their downtime getting creative, recording some new songs and groovy covers. I actually read an article in The Rockaway Times recently where my friend Walker Hornung said that’s exactly what he has been doing! Okay, enough Rockin’ let’s get down to Stockin’. Looking back at 2020, it was an extremely volatile year for the U.S. stock markets. After record sell-offs in March, the DOW finished the year with a gain of 7.2%, S&P 500 was up 16.3% and the NASDAQ soared 43.6%! To put that in perspective, for every $1K you invested in those indexes you made $72, $163 and $436! Referencing my previous article, you would have only made $5 of interest in a savings account. March was a dark time and there was the fear of the unknown, but for those in the stock game who were opti-

mistic for the future, it provided a buying opportunity which comes along maybe once in a decade. Out of any crisis, new ideas are born, and from COVID we had the birth of DDTG, Davey Day Trader Global. Dave Portnoy, who is the founder of Barstool Sports, posts daily Pizza reviews around the country and recently created the Barstool Fund which has raised over $20 million in just one month to help keep small businesses alive. Portnoy decided to use his downtime during the pandemic to become a day trader and livestreams daily his stock plays to his hundreds of thousands of followers. He was even featured in Bloomberg, “Barstool Sports Portnoy is Leading an Army of Day Traders.” Portnoy has shown that trading and investing in the stock market is for everyone, not just the suits. The irony of it all
is Portnoy has stated he knows nothing about stocks. His disclaimer is right below his Twitter handle “El Presidente/3 time Bee Sting survivor. I own a ton of PENN stock. I’m not a financial advisor. Don’t trust anything I say about stocks or my gambling picks.” Portnoy has the right attitude during these times and I think is a tremendous role model for society. If everyone spent their downtime more efficiently and made time to help others, the world would be a much better place. Looking ahead to 2021, there should be no shortage of new ideas to come and the sooner we start returning to some type of normalcy, the better the world will be. So listen to music, stay optimistic, remember to laugh, help those in need and invest wisely. But buyer beware, stocks don’t always go up!

About Fish Oil
Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Omega-3 fatty acids, also known as fish oil, have been around for years. Last month, the Journal of the American Medical Association published the results of the STRENGTH trial, which looked at whether omega-3 fatty acids were helpful at preventing heart disease and stroke. The trial was huge with tens of thousands of participants in countries in North and South America and Asia. While the results of the trial were disappointing (they failed to show a reduction in risk of heart disease with omega-3 acids), there were some interesting tidbits of information that came out of the trial. Omega-3 fatty acids are thought to lower triglyceride levels, slightly raise HDL (“good” cholesterol) levels, and slightly lower blood pressure. Omega-3s cannot be
made in the body and help with cell growth, muscle activity, and have anti-inflammatory properties. They are derived from fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and trout and shellfish including mussels, oysters, and crabs. Some nuts and seeds contain a different omega-3, alpha linolenic acid (ALA). There are different types of omega-3 fish oils and they have different properties. These types include docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and a derivative of EPA called icosapent ethyl (IPE). While it is known that people who eat dietary sources of fish oils have a lower risk of dying from heart disease, most research so far has shown that fish oils have little to no benefit in preventing heart disease. Research is ongoing to explain that apparent contradiction. While there seems to be no direct harms from taking fish oil supple-
ments, side effects do include a fishy aftertaste, bad breath, a rash, and heartburn, nausea, or diarrhea. Also, they may interact with some medications increasing the risk of bleeding if on blood thinners, low blood pressure if on blood pressure meds, and may interfere with the functioning of contraceptives. So far, some studies, such as the STRENGTH study, have shown no benefit from taking fish oils, while other studies, for example REDUCE-IT, have shown a positive benefit. What is becoming clearer is that the fish oil being studied is important to the possible outcome. For example, studies that used EPA and DHA had different results from others that studied IPE or ALA. Another factor in determining the outcome may be the type of placebo that is used in the study. Since most fish oils are liquids, the studies have used either liquid-filled capsules or the liquid itself
and used either mineral oil or corn oil as the placebo. Extended use of either of these oils can have its own effects on health, thereby potentially altering the outcomes of the study. The importance of the specific omega-3 formulation in achieving a beneficial reduction in heart disease risk and the degree to which the placebo may have affected the outcomes remains unresolved, accounting for seemingly opposite outcomes from similar studies. Someone once said that science can be cloudy before it becomes clear (I think it was Yogi Berra ;). Obviously, more study and research are needed, but meanwhile if you do take a fish oil supplement you can be comforted by the fact that while it may not help you, it may give you bad breath but probably won’t harm you. NEW ELEVATORS COMING TO BEACH 67TH STATION Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato announced her support of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority accessibility project of 17 new elevators that will be built at eight stations across New York City, including two new elevators at the Beach 67th Street station in Arverne. The station will now be the third ADA accessible station on the A-train line, the only train that serves the Rockaway peninsula. “I applaud the MTA for starting accessibility upgrades that are needed throughout the entire subway system,” Pheffer Amato said. “In a transportation desert like Rockaway, it is crucial that everyone has the ability to access the subway. In a time when so many development projects have been stalled due to COVID-19, I am thrilled that the MTA is able to move forward with this project and provide increased accessibility to our residents.” “Providing ADA accommo-

dations to the Rockaway community, and customers who use one of the busiest and longest lines in the system, is necessary to reach our goal of a more accessible system,” Janno Lieber, President of MTA Construction & Development said. “Despite the MTA's difficult financial situation, Construction & Development continues its commitment to better deliver projects faster and more efficiently. Packaging multiple ADA stations into more efficient bundles is a great example of those efforts." The MTA Accessibility Project is being funded by federal grant money already received by the MTA and highlights their ongoing commitment to system-wide accessibility. In its $54.8 billion 2020-2024 Capital Plan, the MTA had designated funding for 70 ADA projects in the subway system and the Staten Island railway.
Happy Birthday Brother Love Always & Miss You So Much, Patty & Bobby To Those Whom I Love & Those Who Love Me When I am gone, release me, let me go. I have so many things to see and do, You mustn't tie yourself to me with too many tears, But be thankful we had so many good years. I gave you my love, and you can only guess How much you've given me in happiness. I thank you for the love that you have shown, But now it is time I traveled on alone. So grieve for me a while, if grieve you must, Then let your grief be comforted by trust. It is only for a while that we must part, So treasure the memories within your heart. I won't be far away for life goes on. And if you need me, call and I will come. Though you can't see or touch me, I will be near. And if you listen with your heart, you'll hear, All my love around you soft and clear. And then, when you come this way alone, I'll greet you with a smile and a 'Welcome Home'.
