Local Photographer Joe Lupo Captures Beach Life By Kami-Leigh Agard

There’s a saying, “A walk on the beach is worth a thousand words,” and local Joe Lupo is not just a mere lensman, but a documentarian, who meaningfully captures the ethereal mystery and beauty of Rockaway Beach with his captivating shots. From breathtaking sunrises, sunsets, ocean, sand, nature, wildlife and surf, Lupo’s photos make you dream in colors borrowed from the sea;

and if you haven’t seen his work already, you’ll soon have a chance. The beach gazer will be debuting his first one-man photo exhibit showcasing 26 of his beautifully wood-framed images at Community House this Sunday, January 20. Brooklyn-born, New Jersey-bred Lupo is a renaissance man of sorts, who over his 50 plus years has worn many hats with the vocations he pursued, and according to him, has always marched to the beat of his own drum. He explained, “After I finished school, for seventeen years I was a buyer for an electronic distribution company, catering to the military, aircraft and shipping industry. Then I purchased an Italian specialty delicatessen, which I ran for nine years. When I turned 50, I decided to go to cosmetology school, and for the last ten years of my professional career,

I was a hairdresser at a salon in Manhattan.” So how did Lupo fall into photography? “From my teens, I was a shutterbug, when in the 70s, it was film photography. My dad was a shutterbug himself, and as a young boy I spent many hours in the dark room watching him develop photos, but I’ve never developed film myself. However, I loved taking photos, but didn’t wholly dive into it until I landed in Rockaway.” For Lupo, winding up in Rockaway was his destiny. “When I was 30 years old, I went to visit my grandmother, and she presented an old camera that even had the accordion bellows, which belonged to my grandfather. I opened it and saw there was an old exposed roll of film. I took it to be developed, and when I saw the photos, my jaw dropped. There were 12 black and white photos

of me when I was a year old in a stroller on Riis Park Beach. At that moment, I truly felt that it was a message from my grandfather with a clue to my future. Ultimately the full circle of being born in Brooklyn, where here I am a happy baby on the beach, and an intimation that when I retire, I am going to be a happy old man on the beach. And sure enough, here I am today — a happy old man on the beach,” Lupo laughed. Continued on page 3

Lupo moved to Rockaway in October of 2015, and that was when his passion and prowess for photography skyrocketed. “I am a beach person. I’m not necessarily a zodiac believer, but my sign is a water sign, and I do feel a very strong draw to the ocean. Not just during the summer, but all seasons. I find the beach to be therapeutic and spiritual, especiallya a snow-covered beach. Even if the snow is falling, that spiritual connection that comes with the solitude, nature and ocean sounds, is profound. Of course in the summertime, there are other components like the sand between your toes and the warmth of the sun. However, sunrises and sunsets in the winter are just as meaningful as in the summer,� Lupo said. The beach aficionado said the significance of the name of his photography business, JLupoWolf, is connected to the

moon. “Lupo, translated from Italian to English, means wolf, which I guess brings another aspect into my photography because if you look at my collection, you’ll see like the wolf, I am very drawn to the moon,� he said. Lupo posts his latest gems daily on Facebook page: The Better Friends of Rockaway Beach. With his trusty Nikon Coolpix P90 digital camera, whether it’s in blazing sun or a winter blizzard, day or night, Lupo says that in one session, he easily takes 300 photographs, and then meticulously goes through each to find the keepers, which he loves sharing with his fellow beach enthusiasts. Lupo said he finally mustered up the courage to officially exhibit his work when a finalist at The Rockaway Times Photo Contest, of which he was one of the appointed judges, encouraged him to showcase at The Rockaway Artists Alliance’s ArtSplash 2018. “I never thought that I was at that level, but I took the chance,

auditioned and I was able to exhibit two of my photos. What an amazing experience! I got to meet other artists, who told me about the upcoming local holiday markets, where I could actually sell my work. I had no idea how to even price my photos. To me they are priceless, but I never thought to even try to sell them,� Lupo said. Lupo’s first market was at Community House (CH), and he did so well that he was happily overwhelmed. He then went on to participate in eight other markets, with the grand finale of the season being at CH. “It all came full circle. CH was where I started and where I got to not just end a terrific season, but then I was blessed with an unexpected offer,� he exclaimed. CH’s manager Deirdre Galvin Sorocki loved his work so much, she introduced Lupo to the owner Kelley Brooke, who not just bought some pieces, but invited him to do his own one-man exhibit. “I was blown away,� Lupo said. All of my photographs

from 2018 — Sunsets and Sunrises, the Jetty Collection, Merlot Mornings, poignant photos showing Rockaway’s increasing beach erosion and a special one from 2019 will not just be on display, but up for sale at really affordable prices. Sorocki couldn’t be happier. “Joe’s art represents the quintessential beauty of our beaches, and as a community business, we are so proud to support an amazing local artist like Joe. We welcome everyone to come and enjoy his stunning photos,� she said. To kickoff Lupo’s one-man photo exhibit, on Sunday, January 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Community House (located at 101-19 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) is hosting a special bottomless brunch menu along with two-for-one brunch cocktails. Lupo’s exhibit will be on display through the end of February. “I just want people to come and appreciate the beauty of our Rockaway Beach,� Lupo said.

On The Road Louie Pastina, who writes The Lazer Speaks column in this paper, is our unofficial travel writer. He offers wonderful detail when taking us to hidden or forgotten New York. He’s able to transport us to other places as well. His rich descriptions of Colorado, Italy, Canada, among other places, make you feel like you saved on air travel but got to those places yourself. Take it easy, Lazer, the compliments end there. I fell asleep during a Lazer recap of a yoga retreat. Maybe that’s a little harsh. I did

breathe heavily and was quite relaxed two paragraphs in. I’ve been on the road the past couple of weeks and realize I’m no Lazer. My descriptive powers are pretty much limited to “cool” and “great.” When I go negative or neutral, I’m limited to variations of suck. The lines at the airport sucked. But the line coming home didn’t suck. Barcelona and Madrid were cool and great. The high-speed train between the two cities didn’t suck. I mean, it was kinda cool but the passing scenery

wasn’t a blur. I don’t want to get too excited about something that I could only compare to the A Train. You think Build-it-Back is bad? You think the courthouse is a never-ending project? Rockaway’s got nothing on Barcelona. They’re still building a Catholic church, a basilica, that they started in 1882. Even unfinished, the Sagrada Familia is cool and great and makes you say, “Holy Sh-t,” which a church really shouldn’t make you do. But Holy Sh-t, the thing’s unreal. The outside resembles a huge sand castle rolling down Bourbon Street as a Mardi Gras float. It’s eye-popping and spectacular (more than cool and great) but you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. The inside is worth the price of admission and more. Which is probably why the church isn’t finished yet. They’re making way more than any Sunday Mass collection ever could. As it is, Mass is only offered a few times a year. Anyway, it’s about $30 to go inside and look around. Ten thou-

Page 5 sand people a day visit. It’s a tidy business and none of the 10,000 come away thinking they’ve overpaid. And ha ha, wiseacres, no, I didn’t get hit by lightning upon entering. Though I was struck by awe. Soaring towers on the outside only hint at the amazing upward view from the inside. The place makes St. Patrick’s Cathedral look like a roadside chapel. When the place is finished, although it’ll never be, the central tower will reach more than 550 feet. Cool, great. Worth the trip to Barcelona. That’s right, I’m telling you what my mother told me: go to church. (At least one with 18 towers). I’m running out of room and I never got to say that Madrid was also cool and great. The vermouth didn’t suck. And during the second leg of my recent travels, I ended up in rural South Carolina getting chased by a big, angry dog. That kinda sucked but it was kinda cool how I escaped on my electric bike. Lazer, move over.

***** Two colorful personalities, John Lenihan and Owen Baxter, died within days of each other last week. John was an active member in the Rockaway Park Homeowners and Residents Association and Owen ran the Beautiful Palm Gardens pub and the short-lived Irish Circle on The Boulevard (no relation to the well-known place on Beach 102nd Street). They’ll be missed by many. ***** What a nice gesture by Elegante Pizzeria. The popular eatery offered free pizza to furloughed Federal workers on Tuesday. The Elegante family wanted to show their appreciation for the hard work of the government employees. ***** Well now it’s confirmed: it was a bad idea (and thankfully, unlikely to happen in Rockaway, though you never know). A Paris

restaurant, O’naturel, has closed because it couldn’t draw enough customers. Maybe it wasn’t the food. Maybe it was the idea that you were supposed to dine in the nude. Yep, that was the, uh, attraction. It was said that hot soup was a hazard. Well, at least no one had to loosen their belt after the meal. ***** It was pretty much a foregone conclusion, but Queens District Attorney Richard Brown made it official and won’t seek re-election after 27 years in office. Current Borough President Melinda Katz, and City Councilman Rory Lancman are among those who’ve already announced they’re running for the job. ***** We’d like to welcome Gille Ann Rabbin to our list of stellar columnists. She’ll address consumer protection and privacy issues. She’s a top attorney with deep Rockaway roots and even better, a terrific writer. They asked: “Do you agree that people around your neighborhood are willing to help their neighbors?” Not surprisingly, the Rockaway – Broad Channel community had among the highest percentage of people who agreed. ***** The Mayor announced an expansion of the City’s ferry system which will now include Staten Island (giving commuters a chance to get to Midtown West) and Coney Island. The more entrenched the ferry system is, the better for Rockaway. Now, if they’d figure out how to incorporate a stop at JFK….

***** Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato will join the New York City Department of Finance to bring a Notice of Property Value Session to Rockaway in February. Residents are invited to take part in the session on Friday, February 15 at the Knights of Columbus located at 333 Beach 90th Street from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. You’ll be able to get one-on-one assistance regarding property taxes. Uhm, that’s great Stacey, but maybe a weeknight or weekend for working homeowners? ***** As far as crime in Queens goes, the 100th Precinct had some of the lowest crime rates last year. According to 2018 NYPD stats, the 100th Precinct saw the lowest number of rapes, burglaries, grand larceny and auto thefts in the borough, with five rapes, 59 burglaries, 161 incidents of grand larceny and 18 car thefts. ***** News we missed. Elegante Gifts a Slice Of Love to Furloughed Federal Workers By Kami-Leigh Agard

This past Tuesday, January 15, on day 25 of the government shutdown, longtime Rockaway Beach pizzeria, Elegante Restaurant, didn’t just offer local furloughed federal workers a free slice, but a whole pie to make them smile. In response to the ongoing government shutdown announced on December 22, the popular pizza spot pulled a class act by offering a whole pizza pie pro gratis to federal workers, who aren’t receiving paychecks, due the shutdown. Nearly 50 people from around the peninsula and Broad Channel took Elegante up on the offer on Tuesday and left not only with a pie, but a big smile. To Elegante’s Amato brothers, Tony and Frank, the people of Rockaway are like family, and when they heard about the government shutdown and how it was affecting local families, they immediately wanted to help. “The idea first came about when my wife, Jo Ann Shapiro, Second Deputy Clerk at Queens County Court, spoke about several workers she personally knew and/or heard about who were not getting paid since the shutdown. My brother, Frank, and I thought about locals in Rockaway and Broad Channel, suffering with the uncertainty of when they will receive their paycheck. We have been here 37 years and consider not just our regular customers, but the entire community, family. We knew we had to do something to help ease their stress and bring a smile to these families’ faces. From the time we opened almost four decades ago to Hurricane Sandy in 2012, and today, we solidly support the community and the community continues to support us. So for us to do this, it was a no-brainer,” Tony Amato said. The restaurant posted a message to its Facebook page that on January 15, they would offer free pies to furloughed federal workers with ID and the response was overwhelming. While both sides haggle, most furloughed federal workers can not report to work, and are not getting paid. Breezy Point resident, Todd Rosenhaus, said he was really touched when he heard about what Elegante was offering to families such as his. “Some friends called to inform me about it, and I was really excited, knowing that my kids and wife would be so happy. We are a family of five, and with me not receiving a paycheck, it’s been quite challenging to keep things afloat. I have worked for the National Parks Service (NPS) for the last 25 years, and this is the third time I have endured a government shutdown, but this one has been

the longest. It’s just a waiting game. Watching the news, and anxiously waiting and praying for that telephone call, letting me know I could finally return to work. I mean as this drags on, besides worrying about incoming bills, I am also worried about our health insurance. I have three boys, and my family can’t afford to lose our health benefits. But anyway, today, I am just grateful for this pizza, knowing that my boys are going to happily devour it,” Rosenhaus said. Broad Channel resident, Kevin O’Connor, who also has been an employee of NPS for two plus decades, is also feeling the effects of the shutdown. “The bills are coming in, but the paychecks aren’t. I guess everyone is just holding their breath, waiting and hoping for this to be over. I believe the President wants to make a deal, but the other side doesn’t want to budge. What we need in this situation is a good mediator, but that remains to be seen. On a more positive note, I’ve been coming to Elegante for years,

and love the food. What they’re doing for us is a tremendously generous gesture, and we are all so grateful. Rockaway and Broad Channel are strong communities and we always stand up to help each other,” O’Connor said. A Rockaway Park resident who works for the Department of Homeland Security, and preferred to remain unnamed, said he is grateful for the pizza, and though he’s worried, knows that his family is better off than most. “I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m worried, I have two children, and need my paycheck, but I know of a lot of families who are worse off. I live in a wonderful neighborhood, where a local restaurant is offering a whole free pizza pie to all of us locals affected. It’s a blessing, and again, I am grateful,” he said. Some furloughed workers, like one Rockaway Beach resident, who works for the Department of Justice and preferred to remain anonymous, is deemed an essential employee and still has to report despite not getting a paycheck. She said, “This really sucks. I still have to report to work without pay, and because of my position in the department, I’m not allowed to even try to make money on the side, while I have two toddlers to provide for. However, when my husband and I heard about what Elegante was offering, we were so happy. We come here all the time. Their kindness really means a lot.” Frank Amato said that a pizzeria in Ozone Park heard about what they were doing, and reached out to see if they could join in. Also, Mara Valentino of Uncle Louie G donated tubs of ices and ice cream to their mission. “People are really catching on. It’s really a good thing,” Amato said. “We’ve personally been in situations like this, such as with Hurricane Sandy, when you had no idea what was going to happen, and we are so grateful for the help and support we received from our Rockaway community. One hand has to clap the other. It’s all about being good and caring neighbors.”

QLA Offers Youth Court Experience Are you a middle or high school student that wants to learn more about the justice system? Consider joining the Youth Justice Court. Every Thursday at 4 p.m., Queens Law Associates and Queens Library hosts the Youth Justice Court. Youth Justice Court (YJC) is a court run by young adults in the community. Members are empowered to help their community while learning about the law. The program is offered around Queens, but locally, it is held at the Queens Library For Teens (2002 Cornaga Ave) in Far Rockaway. YJC is a training program preparing all members to advocate within the Youth Court model. Once training is completed, cases come to YJC and members will learn how to prepare a case for trial. YJC holds a hearing to investigate the circumstances and determine

what sanction is necessary. Sanctions range from: writing an apology letter, community service at a designated location, or counseling sessions with a QLA social worker. According to QLA’s Angela Williams, YJC is “a free program for young people. Students will take trips to the court house. They can complete their internship or community service hours simply by joining the program. Our vision behind this program is to have students leave the program becoming critical thinkers. Students Get A Taste Of The Big Apple By Matthew Garcia

My name is Matthew Garcia and this past holiday season my friend Caleb and I stayed with our buddy in Rockaway Beach. I am originally from Westchester County and lived there until I was about 10. I’ve lived in North Carolina ever since and will soon graduate from college. Caleb is North Carolina, through and through, born and bred, and had never been to the Big Apple. Watching him experience New York for the first time was nothing short of hilarious. His eyes seemed to be in a constant state of awe and surprise. Although it was cold, rainy weather, we walked more than 30 miles in the city over the few days that we were there during school’s holiday break. We saw all the sites from

the MET, Central Park, Time Square, and the Brooklyn Bridge. Let me tell you, those bikers on the Brooklyn Bridge do not mess around when they are flying across. We spent the next day in Rockaway, exploring the Fort Tilden bunkers and walking the beaches. Here in Wilmington, North Carolina, I live only 15 minutes from the beach. Being able to see the beach right from our window in Rockaway put a whole new meaning to the phrase, “live close to the beach.” The view was great, and yet, the best part of the trip had to be the food. Nothing here can compare to the options and styles New York has. I ate Japanese food, Mediterranean food, and pizza all in one day. Much to our surprise, a Philly

cheesesteak bought from a bodega looked nothing like the sandwich on the board, but it was more deli cious than I could have imagined. After spending only a few days in the city, I could see why the starting wage is $13.50. New York is not a cheap place to be; a single Bud Light was eight dollars! Back here, I could buy a burger, two sides, AND a drink for that price. While the food and drinks might have been expensive, the memories I made with my friends are priceless. New York City is truly like no other, with the food, views, and people. I was in shock when we were stuck on the subway for an hour due to “two unruly passengers fighting in the next train car ahead.” While we waited

for the police to handle the situation, we met the people sitting around us. The conversations we had were pretty typical, but I loved how strangers from all different walks of life, related to one another from a single conversation. The diversity in the city is incredible, not just in the sense of color, but age, gender, and nationality as well. When we were in the MET, I heard every other language except English. New York is a world of its own and in only a few days we were able to see and experience this amazing city and the millions of people that call it home. Thank you, New York, for reminding me of my roots and being a great host. Until next time.

Bugalou Rocks On & Raises Funds Bugalou Productions kicked off 2019 at St. Camillus Academy Auditorium with a double bill that rocked the house and raised the roof for the Rockaway Artist Alliance (RAA). 3 Sheets to the Wind took the stage shortly after 7 p.m. on January 5 and turned heads with a 60-minute set of their great renditions from the classic rock catalog. The audience then was primed for Lex Grey and the Urban Pioneers, who did not disappoint as her voice was as big as her personality, and the Pioneers aptly supported her with great musicianship. They showed why they have earned their reputation as one of the best live acts to appear regularly in Rockaway. A great time was had by all in attendance and, even better, $1,000 was raised toward the reconstruction of the roof at Ft. Tilden Building T-7, which is the home of RAA's gallery and event space, as well as the base for their educational programs.

There are still plenty of great acts in store for the 2019 Bugalou lineup. Next up is Blac Rabbit, plus Gerald Bair and Friends on February 9 at St. Camillus Academy Auditorium. Blac Rabbit brings some out-of-this world covers of The

Beatles’ music, which have earned them appearances on the Ellen Degeneres show, and Gerald Bair is a longtime area favorite, bringing original tunes and Irish classics. The March 9 show will also be in St. Camillus Academy Auditorium with Aztec TwoStep performing their tribute show to Simon & Garfunkel and the Everly Brothers that was developed with longtime WNEW/WFUV deejay and Rockaway resident Pete Fornatale. They will also perform their own acclaimed songs within the show. April 6 moves over to Springman Hall at St. Camillus. Wine With Sue will begin the night followed by Damn the Torpedoes, the premier Tom Petty tribute band in the country. Bugalou Season 2 will wind up at St. Francis de Sales gym on May 11 with the highlight of the year, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Felix Cavaliere's Rascals.

Sorrentino’s Meats Gets Ready to Serve Rockaway By Katie McFadden

A taste of Italy is coming to Rockaway. Mouthwatering cuts of meat, fresh cheese, Italian delicacies and what some call the best sausage around will be found right in the neighborhood with the addition of Sorrentino’s Meat Market. The Howard Beach favorite is expected to open up shop near Beach 100th Street at the end of the month. Locals have long made the trip to Howard Beach or parts of Brooklyn to pick up unique Italian delicacies, but you can soon save the toll. It’s coming right here. Sorrentino’s Meat Market, a favorite butcher in Howard Beach, closed up shop earlier this month begin making the move to its new location at 9920 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Vincent Sorrentino has mastered the art of good meat. After all, he has been working in butcher shops since the age of 12 and before he even turned 18, he owned his very own shop, N & V Meat Market, in Glendale. Sorrentino had the Glendale store for about 33 years before he opened up a second shop, Sorrentino’s Meat Market in Howard Beach, just a few weeks before Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The shop made a quick comeback after the storm and proved to be an instant hit. Despite plenty of competition in town, Sorrentino’s customer base quickly grew from locals in Howard Beach, to those from Rockaway to Breezy Point making the trip down Cross Bay Boulevard for specialties like dry aged steaks, stuffed chicken breasts, ready-to-heat chicken cutlets or meatballs in sauce, braciole, a selection of homemade sausages, including their popular broccoli rabe sausage, plus fresh cheeses, prepared antipasti and more. Despite offering so much, Sorrentino says he was limited in what he could offer at the Howard Beach shop. “The shop is in a shopping center near Sapienza’s that sells cold cuts, so we can’t sell cold cuts and the store is very small,” Sorrentino said. Wanting to expand, the wheels started turning and Rockaway

was calling his name. “I get a lot more people from Rockaway than from Howard Beach. Rockaway and Broad Channel make up about 65 percent of my customer base and everyone would come in and say, ‘you should open up a place in Rockaway,’”

Sorrentino said. So when he came across a location for rent that was three times the size of his Howard Beach store, for lower cost, it was a no brainer. Sorrentino’s is taking over the old Bryan’s Auto space near Beach 100th and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. The large space will allow Sorrentino to sell all of his favorites, plus now he’ll be able to expand by offering cold cuts. “It’s going to be more like a market than what we had before,” he said. The space will also offer parking for about six or seven cars in the back. Despite Curran’s Superior Meats on Beach 116th Street being a longtime staple as Rockaway’s butcher, Sorrentino says with his shop focusing more on Italian specialties and prepared meals, their differences will give shoppers more variety to choose from. Locals agree and they’re looking forward to having the option in town. “I’m thrilled that Sorrentino’s is coming here,” Maureen Blum Del Vecchio

said. “Currans will and should remain a Rockaway staple, but ‘downtown’ is becoming a vital consumer base and it’s great to offer a little variety.” Del Vecchio is one of the many residents who are already Sorrentino’s customers and has been making the trip to Howard Beach. “I’ve shopped there about half a dozen times. It’s great for Italian specialties like sausage, braciole, and cheeses, as well as the usual butcher shop fare. Plus their sales are really great and the staff is old-school and friendly,” she said. Local Diana Rossi is also a longtime Sorrentino’s custom-

er. “I’ve been there quite a bit and it was definitely worth the trip,” Rossi said, adding that she was one of the many customers that encouraged Sorrentino to make the move to Rockaway. “I’m so happy that they will be opening up here finally. Rockaway was in need of a quality Italian-style meat market that offers great quality and good prices.” Kosta Makrides, another longtime local Sorrentino’s customer, believes the new shop will be a popular addition to the peninsula. “I love them. I’ve been going to Sorrentino’s ever since they opened in Howard Beach and I suggested they come to Rockaway, so I’m extremely happy that they actually are now,” Makrides said. “They have a great selection of meat, homemade Italian specialties and they make these prepared products like antipasti. Their stuff is really good and I know they’re going to be a bit hit in this community.” As for Sorrentino, he’s looking forward to serving the community. “At the end of the day, it’s going to be better for us because we’ll have a bigger and better place and we have a customer base out here. CLIMATE CHANGE WORKSHOP AT RWA LIVING CLASSROOM By Sydney Randall, Living Classroom Educator

Throughout the month of December, Rockaway Waterfront Alliance’s (RWA) Living Classroom program focused on the issue of climate change with local school groups. Children ages six to 16 came to the Rockaway Institute for a Sustainable Environment (RISE) to learn about the effects and costs of climate change, as well as learn about and brainstorm potential solutions. Through these workshops, students learned about the human impact on climate change as well as participated in a hands-on solution based activity. After a discussion on the causes and background of climate change, the students were tasked with the job of an urban planner. They designed and created futuristic homes, buildings and shorelines for a world affected by climate

change using cardboard, bottle caps, pipe cleaners and anything else they could get their hands on. They were tasked with designing adaptive strategies that would help keep future buildings and homes safe from sea level rise, more severe storms, and other outcomes of climate change. Their creativity was astounding: they came up with clever and unique solu-

tions to problems that many areas of the world (including Rockaway) will be facing in the not-so-distant future. The lesson ended with a discussion on advocacy and the proper way to contact elected officials in order to make their voices heard. The students were given a pre-fabricated letter discussing what they learned about climate change as well as

a sheet of contact information for New York State officials. The students were encouraged to write their own letters, draw their own pictures and peacefully protest to demand action from their officials. As the earth continues to warm, we will see more severe weather and storms as well as desertification and drought. It is more important than ever to spread knowledge to young people. This program allows the students to attack climate change from a solution minded standpoint, giving them the tools and information to be informed citizens of the world. RWA will continue to host monthly workshops for Pre-K-12 students during the school year. Pheffer Amato Secures Cornaga Ave Crossing Guard Cornaga Avenue is about to get a bit safer. On Tuesday, January 15, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato announced that, following a walkthrough and in response to a letter by her office, NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill has officially placed a crossing guard at the intersection of Cornaga Avenue and Beach 9th in Far Rockaway, which is crossed by hundreds of students and parents every day on their way to schools.

The Literary Chick Review: The Prisoner “Who is Number 1?” “You, are Number 6.” Anyone familiar with the Delphic philosophical sixties’ television show The Prisoner, will no doubt light up upon hearing or seeing this exchange. Thunder cracks the sky. An unnamed secret agent speeds to his office in his black and yellow Lotus, where he throws open the doors and resigns angrily. He storms out and goes back to his London flat, where he forcefully packs for what seems to be a trip. A gentleman in a top hat methodically gets out of his car and inserts a cannister of gas through the keyhole. The agent passes out and somewhat groggily awakens later to find himself in an idyllic village. Or is the charmingly marzipan village, known By Marilyn Macron, Esq. aka Maria Cowhey

only as The Village, actually a prison? The Prisoner was the brainchild of actor Patrick McGoohan, best known for his role in Secret Agent Man. McGoohan created, produced, and co-wrote some of the scripts of this groundbreaking series that dealt with the theme of governmental tyranny over the individual. McGoohan was a strict individualist and rebelled against anything that he felt infringed upon that. This series was his warning and his rebellion. The agent, now to be known only as Number 6, is brought to The Village to be interrogated as to the reasons for his resignation. His captors will not disclose which side they are on. Everyone is known by a number, and it is unclear who are the captors and who the captives. Cat and mouse

games abound on both sides. Attempts at escape are cruelly thwarted both mentally and physically by various set-ups designed to break his spirit a la de L’Isle-Adam’s The Torture of Hope, where Number 6 is allowed to escape up until the very moment he takes his first breath only to have it ripped from him by a giant, gelatinous sphere known as Rover. McGoohan has said in an interview that The Village was trying to destroy the individual by any means possible so that he will accept that he is not an individual by only a number, in his character’s case, Number 6. Number 6 rejects this and in unwavering in his thundering, “I’m not a number, I am a free man!” which is followed by raucous laugher by the current Number 2 (they change for every episode, being replaced when

they fail to break Number 6 by the episode’s end). The captor’s thoughts behind this is that once an individual is broken, or reduced to merely a number, they are malleable and can be led in the herd. An individual, like Number 6, cannot be. The Prisoner by Thomas M. Disch is based on the iconic TV show. It opens with an elegant repartee between an unnamed man, later to be known as Number 6, and a dark and mysterious looking woman. The book mirrors the plot of the TV show to a large extent, including the presence of a mute, dwarf butler, dream tampering, insertion of false memories, post hypnotic suggestion, a doppelgänger, behavior therapy (read: torture), and bareknuckle fights, which Number 6 wins handily. THURSDAY, JANUARY 17, 2019 expecting from him it would not be that.” There is a play within a play so to speak, with the characters staging a Village production of Shakespeare’s darkest comedy of spying and hypocrisy, Measure for Measure, culminating in the escape of Number 6’s love interest, or rather, sparring partner with sexual tension, as opposed to his other sparring partners. Even here, she systematically deceived him while protesting that her friendship was real. Her actions were dictated by her personal necessity of escape. No hard feelings, my love. References abound in this novel, everything from Shakespeare, to Tales of Hoffmann, to Occam’s Razor, to Pirandello, not in a way to put the reader off, but encouraging him to expand his points of reference. Number 6 is promoted to Number 2 in the novel, and the book culminates when he is granted an audience with Number 1. But who is Number 1?

Working with Limitations Learning to respect and work with injuries is a journey that we take when our bodies or minds do not cooperate and tell us something is not working properly. It means we must slow down and learn to adjust the way we do things. It doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t do what you want to do, it just means you must compromise and make changes to your routine. Learning from our limitations and being able to modify

allow us to go with the flow of life and all its curve balls. Our limitations humble us and give us strength to move on. When one is sick or injured, it is a very difficult place to be. The old saying, “You don’t know how a person feels until you walk in their shoes,” is spot on. We really don’t know how we would respond if we lost the use of our legs, hands, arms, voice, etc. Movement is helpful in moving stagnate energy

in our bodies, but it can also be done by using subtle energies within your body. Our cells are full of energy and we can imagine moving through them with our breath and consciousness. It is a hard thing to explain because it is subtle, but it is a powerful tool to learn when one becomes ill or injured and can’t use the body the way she/ he used to. Saying you can’t do something means you are not willing to try or perhaps you are afraid of the unknown and you don’t want to make the necessary changes to do what you once loved to do. We choose to be safe and comfortable in our lives, so taking chances will bring us out of our comfort zone. I believe it is important to take the leap and try new things to keep your body and mind fresh. Make adjustments along the way and be mindful in whatever you are doing. The practice of yoga is always teaching us how to be mindful. Yoga is for everyone regardless of your conditions. Yes, there are dif-

Merkel Cell Carcinoma The subject of today’s column was suggested by a reader. To that person, I say thank you. I realize your request was several months ago but please understand that my columns are written well in advance, often two to three months before they run. I hate being under a deadline. Skin cancers are among the most common types of cancer. Skin cancers are usually linked to sun exposure, even childhood sun exposure, as sun exposure is cumulative. The most common skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma. This cancer does not spread and is removed by skin surgery. Melanoma is

much less common thankfully, however melanoma can spread, and treatment often includes surgical removal, sentinel node biopsy, and chemotherapy and/or radiation. Sentinel node biopsy is a procedure to determine whether the tumor has spread to the lymph nodes. In this procedure, dye is injected near the cancer. The dye then flows through the lymph system. The first lymph node the dye reaches is called the sentinel node. This node is removed and examined for cancer cells. Much rarer than melanoma is Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), also known as neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin. Merkel

cells are found at the base of the outermost skin layer (the epidermis). Merkel cells are connected to nerve endings and are responsible for the sense of touch. MCC usually appears as a flesh-colored or bluish-red nodule, often on the face, head, or neck. It is most commonly seen in older individuals with long-term sun exposure. The first sign of an MCC is usually a fast-growing, painless nodule on the skin. Although they are most commonly seen above the base of the neck, they may appear anywhere on the body, even in areas with little to no history of sun exposure. Like melanomas, MCCs grow rapidly and spread to other parts of the body. Although it is linked to sun exposure, recent research has linked MCC to a common skin virus called Merkel cell polyomavirus. How the virus causes MCC is not well understood yet. In addition, although the presence of this skin virus is very common, MCC is quite rare. This discrepancy has yet to be explained. Risk factors for MCC include exposure to

Page 23 sunlight and UV light (tanning beds), a weakened immune system (infections like HIV and medications used to treat cancers like leukemia), history of other skin cancers, older age (over 50), and light skin color. Because it grows rapidly and spreads, MCC must be diagnosed and treated quickly. Once MCC is diagnosed by skin biopsy, like melanoma, the lesion is removed, usually by using the Mohs technique which ensures that the tumor is fully removed. Also, like melanoma, a sentinel node biopsy is then performed to see if it has spread. Imaging tests like CAT scans, MRIs, or PET scans are helpful to determine whether the tumor has spread. If the tumor has spread, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are employed to fight the disease. To prevent the development of these skin cancers, it is important to avoid unprotected sun exposure and never, ever, use a tanning bed. I often write about social media because it is such a major part of our lives. I first joined Facebook over ten years ago to monitor my daughter’s social media activity. I am an avid Law and Order: SVU and Dateline fan and was worried about online predators. Little did I know that I would begin to enjoy this medium of socializing. I truly enjoy seeing pictures of former students and their

successes. I hate to admit, but some of my former students are even married with their own children. It is so nice when I comment on their pictures and they reply back with either a comment or a personal message. Another thing I enjoy is seeing pictures of my parents that the wonderful Betsy Lograno has found and added. The earliest picture I had previously seen of my father was his picture when he was drafted into the Vietnam War. Another thing that is great is keeping up with relatives that

live across the country. I have never even met some of my cousin’s children and it is nice to see their accomplishments in sports and school. However, some of those relatives have been un-friended because of their polar opposite beliefs than mine and their rudeness and inappropriateness. We are a family with many police officers and one relative was just anti-law enforcement. So, I will not be following him anymore. Which is the point of today’s article: you are not going to change my mind with your political posts and I know I am not going to change your mind. I have posted a few political opinions and I am going to stop the posts and keep it social. I am a conservative person who believes what she believes: 1. I believe that people should follow the law. So I am against illegal immigration. My relatives went to the Irish Embassy and filled out all of the proper documentation and came here legally. My friend’s father came here on

I believe that people should have to work for things. People who receive free everything do not appreciate it. I come from a family where my grandmother refused to accept any government handouts. All of her children appreciated everything in their lives and all had a strong work ethic. Many years ago, I asked a student how the SAT was because I knew he was scheduled to take it the previous Saturday for free because I helped him sign up using his voucher. He told me, “Oh I didn’t take it, something came up.” I will bet everything I have that if he had paid for that exam he would have made it to the exam. I could go on and on but you get the point. So let’s keep to the old mantra: Keep your age, weight and political views to yourself.

For many people, the holiday season is the season for increased spending. While this time of year provides an opportunity to show others how much they mean to us, in the process of holiday spending, much personal information changes hands and can be exposed. This can create increased opportunities for accidental data leakage and for identity thieves to steal our information. Checking your credit report regularly is advisable and an important personal finance management tool. It’s especially important to check your report post-holiday season. Your credit report contains your credit history. It reports information including how much debt you’ve incurred and what type, your debt payment history, loan balances, repossessions or foreclosures, liens, judgments,

and bankruptcies. It contains a list of every credit account you’ve opened, and your payment history. Credit history is used to formulate your credit score, which is used to determine eligibility for all types of credit from obtaining a mortgage, getting a car loan and renting a home to qualifying for an advantageous loan interest or insurance rate. Credit reports are compiled and maintained by credit reporting agencies. The three major ones are Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. Each agency maintains a report on you; the reports are similar but not identical. Businesses you have credit with report your payment information to the credit reporting agencies on varying schedules, generally on a monthly basis. Erroneous information can be contained in your credit report when, for example, a business mistakenly reports a payment as delinquent when in fact it isn’t.

Fraud stemming from offline and online identity theft can also result in inaccurate reporting. Identity thieves steal valuable pieces of consumers’ information, like home addresses, telephone numbers, credit card and bank account numbers, and use the information to set up credit accounts in victims’ names. According to a 2018 report, credit card thieves stole almost $17 billion in 2017. These new lines of fraudulent credit appear on your credit report and can signify that you are an identity theft victim. You can check your credit report from each of the three major bureaus for free once a year, for a total of three reports annually. The free credit reports are required pursuant to the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a federal law enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). You can obtain the free reports through AnnualCreditReport. com or by mailing a request to

Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281. You can also call 877-322-8228 to get them. Checking your credit report will not affect your credit. Since each of the three agencies’ reports can vary, and you can check your credit report three times a year for free, take advantage of this opportunity and check your report three times annually. Every four months, order a report from a different agency through AnnualCreditReport.com. If you are an identity theft victim or your information has been compromised, you may want to consider checking your credit reports frequently. If your credit report contains inaccuracies, the report, which contains contact info for your local area, provides instructions for addressing disputes. The FTC’s website has extensive information to help identity theft victims.

Darryl C. Madison is a Special Education teacher at PS/ MS 105. When he’s not teaching his students about math and science, he’s teaching them how to play better chess. Each Thursday afternoon, Coach Madison is teaching several of his students how to improve their chess game. “The game of chess is over 1,500 years old. It helps children develop better focusing skills, it helps them with their concentration, and it helps build self-esteem. These are important qualities that students can use to help them

with their academics in school,” Coach Madison said. Coach Madison is the founder/creator of the No Limits For Youth (NLFY) chess program. This program teaches chess to children and adults across the city. During the course of the year, NLFY sponsors several chess tournaments and events.
