Time To Get Tasty On Tuesdays! By Kami-Leigh Agard
Wondering how to make yummy tortellini soup or even bagels? Rockaway — you’re missing out — if you don’t know about these two smart and rollicking local ladies who serve up not just delicious recipes, but a belly full of laughs, live on Facebook every Tuesday afternoon. The coy masterminds of the live Facebook cooking show, Tasty On Tuesdays!, are Belle Harbor resident, Lori Eisenberg Creamer and Breezy Point’s Michelle Melendi Kourbage. After just launching their official Facebook page last Tuesday, January 9, with 1,071 members and as much as 5K viewers, these ladies are definitely popping! Besides, their expertise in demonstrating how to make cooking at home for the family easy and of course, mouthwateringly delicious, these ladies transform from stay-at-home moms to comedians on stage belting out their Southern belle accents (think Sally Fields, Dol-
ly Parton and Julia Roberts in the classic movie, Steel Magnolias) with a few provocative innuendos, “if you know what ah mean… Ever heard of a meat cramp?” Creamer said that she and Kourbage are stay-at-home moms, who have known each other for 18 years. “Call it coincidence or kismet, but Michelle and I both have three children. Both of our oldest kids are in college and our youngest are both fourth-graders at PS 114. Our littlest ones have been in school together since age 3, and

they are who brought us together, not only as friends, but as a blended family,” Creamer said. So how did this idea for Tasty On Tuesdays! begin? Kourbage said, “We both love to cook for our families and children, and as a spoof, last spring, we recorded this live Facebook video of us cooking together. People liked it to so much, we just got even more creative with each show, and began referring to each other as ‘Tast-ee.’ We experimented with accents, and received a barrel of laughs from our friends watching us. For us,
it’s not just about cooking, but entertaining our friends. We don’t have the magic of television, but through Facebook live, it’s amazing how we have captured an audience with no fancy cameras, just with our phones.” Folks from across the country are already tuning in. In their videos, instead of saying, “each other,” they say, “shother.” They do their classic spin in the kitchen, and even give a plug to friends running their own businesses. Creamer said, “We love supporting our friends and their budding creative enterprises. For us, it’s not just about cooking and goofing around, but supporting our community.” In April, they will be cooking up goodies for a fundraising event at PS 114. Whether you’re looking for food with comedy or comedy served with a side of food, these Rockaway ladies are hot and ready to shock. Tune in to Tasty On Tuesdays! every Tuesday live at noon on Facebook.

Bravery in the Face Of Fatal Fire By Katie McFadden
The heroics of New York’s bravest and finest prevented the effects of a high-rise Rockaway Beach fire from becoming worse than they were. On the morning of Friday, January 12, a blaze broke out on the 11th floor of Dayton Beach Park development, 8800 Shore Front Parkway. With all hands on deck, police and firefighters from Rockaway and beyond, came through to control the fire and bring residents to safety. At around 11:20 a.m., a fire broke out in apartment 11P of the 13-story residential co-op building. Firefighters from Engine 266 and Ladder 137, as well as police from the 100th Precinct were among the first to arrive. As firefighters worked to control the blaze and rescue residents, officers from the 100th Precinct ran into the burning building to help residents that
pitals following the fire, to be treated for smoke inhalation. As the fire raged on, more units arrived, including officers from the 101st Precinct. Among them was Officer Glenn Ziminski, whose heroic efforts were caught on camera (see the cover photo). The Rockaway Times sat down with Officer Ziminski to hear the story behind the photo of him carrying an elderly man outside of the building. “It was a pretty chaotic scene with cops and firefighters bringing people out from the building,” Officer Ziminski, a Neighborhood Coordination Officer who has been with the NYPD for 12 years, said. Among the chaos, he could hear screams from an elderly man who was standing outside of the burning building, but still in harm’s way. “The gentleman said he recently had a stroke and he

In total, 17 people were injured, including nine cops, three firefighters and five residents—most overcome with smoke inhalation. Most of the injured

were trapped. According to a Facebook post from the City of Long Beach Fire Department, 100th Precinct Police Officer Marc Pennetti, of Island Park, and his partner, Sgt. Brovakosi were among the first on scene. “Both officers were able to rescue a trapped occupant on the 12th floor and carry them down to the street. Both officers then rushed back into the building and rescued a second trapped victim on the 11th floor,” the post read. Pennetti and Brovakosi were among nine cops that were transported to hos-
was legally blind. He couldn’t go anywhere and was standing near the building as the fire department was breaking glass and debris was falling from the windows above. I said to myself, I have to get him out of here,” Ziminski, a father of three from Suffolk, recalled. Without hesitating, the officer picked up the man and carried him over to safety inside the next building. “It was just human nature. It was the right thing to do, what most cops would do,” he said. Ziminski also credited fellow 101st Precinct officer Sergeant
have since recovered. However, one victim was in critical condition as she was taken to the hospital—91-year-old Ethel Davis, who lived on the 12th floor. Tragically, Davis died on Saturday morning. The fire also left some families displaced due to smoke and water damage in surrounding apartments. By the end of the day on Friday, they were relocated to other Dayton Beach Park apartments that were vacant. “This was a horrible situation for the tenants there. My thoughts and prayers are with them and with the officers and firefighters that were injured,” Officer Ziminski said. Fire Marshals have determined the cause of the fire to be an accident caused by a halogen lamp that fell too close to combustibles. A smoke alarm was not present, according to the FDNY. According to neighbors, this was an accident that could have been prevented. Many neighbors claimed that the resident of the apartment where the fire started, was a hoarder, and conditions in
the apartment made it easy for the fire to spread and difficult to control. Neighbors claimed that the building had not undergone apartment inspections for a few years. “My apartment is destroyed from the fire,” Helen Lee, who lived next door to the apartment where the fire broke out, said. “For years, I filed complaints to management about my neighbors’ hoarding. A few years back, when called for a gas leak, FDNY couldn't even open his door because of all the debris. I can barely remember the last time my apartment was inspected, I think it was a few years after Hurricane Sandy. This all could have been prevented if the proper precautions were taken earlier.” On Sunday, a press conference was held to call out the Housing Preservation Department (HPD) for lack of oversight in providing annual apartment inspections (See Page 8 for details.) Neighbors have started to rally for those that were impacted by the tragedy. GoFundMe campaigns have been started to raise money for the family of Ethel Davis and for resident Helen Lee, who lost everything in the fire. Spout On With shithole so much in the news and this week’s Ask The Doc column about diarrhea, I figured this would be a good week to discuss Europe. Specifically, that thing you find in many European bathrooms, the bidet. It stands alone and looks like a cousin or stepchild of the toilet. They stand two or three feet next to the customary toilet and there are no instructions nearby. If you’ve found yourself alone in the loo with one, there’s a good chance you’ve asked yourself what is that, or how do you use
it? It’s one of those things you’d rather figure out on your own. By the spouts or upward facing faucet-looking things, you figure that it sprays water. There’s not a toilet seat on this thing, there’s just the rim. Do you just sit on the rim and turn it on? You don’t want to test it out because you might get shot in the face. So you’re puzzled. Are you supposed to use the toilet and then shuffle sideways with your pants at your ankles? As absurd as that sounds — take pause for a visual — I believe the answer
is yes! You shuffle for a bottom shower. For men, at least, there’s an expression, the Three S’s. Hint: it’s the steps men take before going out. And it includes showering and shaving. If bidets were a thing here, it’d be the Four S’s because you’d have to include shuffle. We know some people can’t walk and chew gum. Pause again for a visual. Imagine all the mishaps with pants and panties at the ankles of the uncoordinated shuffling toward the bidet. Down goes Aunt Martha! The bidet is one of those things that makes sense in theory but it’s ass backwards, so to speak. You know the British are the same people who have sinks with two faucets, one for hot, one for cold. Instead of figuring out the plumbing so you could have one faucet that allows you to adjust temperature and get warm not just hot, they stick with the old way because, because. You know, because. I’m guessing it’s the same with the standalone bidets. They have them because they’ve
Page 5 always had them. And because they’re so ridiculous — but they’re good in theory! — they never found a market in the USA. But, no butts about it, Boyleing Points — your go-to place for colonoscopy reminders — is here to tell you another American revolution is on the way. The in-toilet bidet. You don’t have one? You don’t know what you’re missing. The American bidet is gonna be like the cell phone. We’ll be asking how we lived without it. The only problem is demonstrating it. It’s tough to make an infomercial about this. It’s one thing to have a guy talking about flex seal but I’m not sure if showing a guy on the throne saying “Ahhhh...” really gets the point across. Of course, this is a subject I only discuss with close friends so consider yourself in the inner circle. I’m telling ya, — I’m telling ya — there’s a common refrain for those who’ve joined me in the spray revolution: it’s life-changing. Next time you’re sitting down, think about it.

Kudos to the first responders who helped people escape, contain the fire, and put their own lives at risk for their heroism at last week’s fire at 8800 Shore Front. Our condolences to the family of Ethel Davis, 91, who resided in a nearby apartment from where the fire started and lost her life due to the smoke. ***** Reports say there were no smoke detectors in the apartment in which the fire started. Somber Press Conference About DBP Fire Turns into Mud-Slinging Fest By Kami-Leigh Agard
Dayton Beach Park (DBP) is back in the spotlight, as this past Friday, January 12, a tragic fire at 8800 Shore Front Parkway, resulted in the death of 91-year-old resident, Ethel Davis, sent several residents and first responders to the hospital, and displaced six families from their homes. In response, early Sunday morning on January 14, Rockaway’s local electeds, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato and Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, together with NYC Comptroller Scott M. Stringer held a press conference calling out the NYC Housing Preservation Department (HPD) for their lack of oversight in providing annual inspections within the Mitchell-Lama Housing Development Co-op incorporating DBP buildings, 8100, 8200, 8400, 8600 and 8800 all on Shore Front Parkway. As a crowd gathered in the freezing cold at the press con-
ference on Shore Front Parkway across from 8800, the atmosphere was splintered by divisive protests with DBP board members and devastated residents. When Assemblywoman Amato was speaking, congratulating the NYPD and FDNY first responders for their hard work, and stating DBP’s board of directors and management needed “to be held accountable” for the fire that “could have been avoided” because apartment inspections hadn’t been conducted in years, a woman identified as DBP board

secretary, Elizabeth Koffer, started shouting, “You are disgusting. Shame on you Stacey! How dare you accuse the board for this?” As the rabble-rousing continued, Senator Addabbo stepped up and said, “It’s about time, we stop reacting, and start preventing. I proudly stand with my Assemblywoman, and I’m determined to make sure we move forward as one collective voice. I support Stacey proudly, and so does the community.” When The Rockaway Times contacted HPD as to what was
amiss with the apartment inspections, this was their spokesperson’s official response: “HPD takes its oversight of Mitchell-Lama developments extremely seriously. This fire was a terrible tragedy and our heart goes out to the family of the woman who lost her life. Inspections are important for the health and safety of tenants in all buildings, and at DBP, the new management company had sent out notices of inspection, slated to start today, prior to the fire. As to HPD’s oversight, residents in all Mitchell Lama Co-ops elect a board to oversee the management of the coop. The board is responsible for complying with all HPD rules and regulations. HPD works with co-op boards and management companies to make sure buildings are run in compliance with HPD rules/regulations. According to HPD, inspections at DBP were last done in 2015. At that time, the inspection was reContinued on page 23

NEW SERVICES FOR SENIORS NOW AVAILABLE Senior citizens are getting an extra helping hand, thanks to Councilman Eric Ulrich. With the help of Ulrich and the Queens Delegation, $25,000 has been allocated for Selfhelp Community Services, which provides transportation services and a Virtual Senior Center program to seniors, for free. The Selfhelp Community Services program, which began taking calls on January 2, 2018, provides transportation to any senior living in Queens for medical appointments up to two long distance trips, or four local trips per month. Rides are scheduled the day before the appointment, between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. To schedule a ride, call the Selfhelp Clearview Senior Center at (718) 224-7888. Seniors eligible for alternative medical transport programs, such as HANC or JSPOA, are encouraged to utilize those programs first, as Selfhelp Community Services is meant to supple-
ment existing services. In addition to transportation, Selfhelp Community Services provides access to a Virtual Senior Center (VSC). Eligible participants from around the borough will be able to join this platform. The VSC engages homebound seniors into the larger community by using technology to connect them with other participants in a range of activities. A cornerstone activity of the program is its interactive, real-time classes where participants can hear, see and talk with each other in an interactive session. Over 40 classes are typically offered each week, ranging from art history to current events, to museum tours to weight training, and other exercise programming. Classes are offered in English, Mandarin, Korean, and Russian, and a Spanish platform will be offered in the near future. To learn more and see if you or someone you know is eligible, call (718) 559-4460.

New HS Boasts New Vision for Academic Excellence
Local parents and students! — Are you on the hunt for a high school? Great news! Though Rockaway is not an oasis for secondary school options, there is new a kid on the block already providing promising pathways for local high school students’ passions and aspirations. Humanities IV Charter High School (Hum4), a new college and career preparatory public charter high school, located at Beach Channel Educational Complex (100-00 Beach Channel Drive), just kicked off its second term with an excited band of ninth graders. And judging from students’ gleeful reactions to their all-around experience in and out of the classroom, this diamond in the rough has already established itself as a gold mine for academic excellence. For example, ninth grader Melanie Ramnarine, who commutes from Ozone Park said, “Hum4 is so much different than any other school I’ve been to. The teachers here really push us to do well. My favorite subject here is Living Environment because I like how the teachers make it fun and give me encouragement, not just to learn, but to excel. I also love the after-school Anime club, because I get to learn a new art that I was never exposed to.” Hum4 and seven other charter schools are part of New Visions for Public Schools, an organization which has served thousands of NYC students since 1989, and has created over 130 small district high schools across the city. Today, the New Visions network supports more than 120,000 traditional district and charter school students across the city. Hum4, which just opened its doors in Rockaway this past fall, already has 86 students enrolled with 14 staff. According to Hum4 principal, Hannah Kehn, what sets the school apart from other high schools is its curriculum and approach to learning. “At Hum4, we give students the opportunity to re-define their overall high school experience, and challenge the status quo of
the bars removed from the windows. “I wanted students to feel comfortable in this space and know how special they are to attend a school where they get to gaze at the beautiful bay and marine life, while receiving a unique academic experience,” Kehn said. Hum4 is accepting applications for 2018-2019 school year, and note that applications for enrollment for the 2017-2018 school year are still open. The school accepts students through a lottery; there are no exams, essays or interviews. Also, note that Eng-
learning. We don’t micromanage their secondary academic experience. Though we are classified as an arts and humanities school, we offer enriching experiences for students also interested in science and technology. Our goal is to make students empowered to make the world a better place, and most importantly, be responsible for their learning and actions. What sets us apart from other charter schools is that we don’t control students’ behavior and how they learn. We offer a safe space, where they learn that to excel, they must be responsible for their actions and reactions, not just in the classroom, but in society-at-large. This is why our tag line is ‘We’re creating something remarkable,’ and our motto, which we also refer to as our ‘Habits,’ is CREATE: Commit, Reflect, Envision, Act, Trust,” Kehn said. The school day at Hum4 runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., split into seven periods, including lunch and an advisory period called, “ensemble.” Kehn said in ensemble, students reflect and communicate what they learned during the day. Each day of the week has a different focus including goal-setting, discussions about current events, social and emotional learning, improvisational games with role-playing — all culminating in a final weekly project where they document what they learned during the week and how they can apply it to their student habits. Kehn said, “These habits re-

flect the orientation toward learning and participation that we support our students to demonstrate in every classroom. We believe that practicing and reflecting on our habits promotes the kind of awareness, decision-making, focus, and confidence necessary to navigate the complexities of human existence.” Beyond required courses, students take classes in visual and performing arts curricula and choose an arts focus-area in the 10th grade such as dance, music, theater and visual art. By senior year, students are required to do a Capstone Senior Project, in which they apply their academic experiences and learning to address a challenge or strengthen an asset in their community. The school offers a regents diploma with advanced designation in the arts. Hum4 also offers extracurricular activities such as yoga, chess, anime and astronomy. Kehn, a 15-year veteran in the education field with a Masters in Education-school leadership from Harvard University and a Masters in Teaching-secondary English from Pace University, said that she has been working on Hum4’s school design for six years. She fell in love with the school site at Beach Channel, and upon occupancy, immediately had all the ceilings and walls re-painted and
lish language learners and special-needs students are welcome to apply. Hum4 is also actively recruiting teachers and other school personnel. Kehn said, “We are aiming to be 500 students strong, actively involved with the local community.” Hum4 is also a member of the Rockaway Business Alliance (RBA) and is a site of RBA’s new technology project, Rockaway ConneX, (see RBA column on page 24). According to Hum4 scholar, Patrick Paul, all students looking to attend the school need to be committed to envisioning the future. “If you are not ready to envision the future, you should not come to this school. My advice for any student applying here is to be open-minded, and get ready to commit to your academic success,” Paul said. For further information about Hum4, visit: new visions.org/ hum4

New Eyes Dear Editor: What a wonderful article from the Jan 11, 2018 edition, "Rockaway Boys in Blue Warm a Local Senior’s Heart." I applaud Ms. Olivia Crum for being open-minded and open-hearted when she called 911 for assistance, and the responding officers carried out their duties compassionately and with a touch of humor. (The best way to handle things!). Ms. Crum states she "was given another perspective that day- that all lives matter…" This woman said that "these two white officers responded to help an
THURSDAY, JANUARY 18, 2018 elderly black lady open her front door" and it was then that "her eyes were open to the realities of the world, that there are two sides to every story…". What an amazing woman to be willing to realize and state that! My husband served in the NYPD for 25 years, as did I for 20 years; we are extremely proud to have been a part of the NYPD. I can also say that every day, when we went out to do our jobs, we did so never ever intending to harm anyone. No police officer ever does, so when tragedy strikes, it is heartbreaking. I only hope that Ms. Crum brings her story back to her activist counterparts and asks them to try and see things through new eyes, not to just follow what the media or others say is the truth. Kimkaye Jenkusky Snow Coincidence Dear Editor: (In response to 01/11 Boyleing Points) Here's a short story about
shoveling. My little Aunt Evie loved to shovel snow. (She's a Finn.) She hadn't been doing much of it lately, not like in years past. She died suddenly recently, approaching her ninety-eighth birthday. Immediately thereafter, there was a record snowfall. You may have heard about it. Evie lived in Erie, Pa. Coincidence? Probably. Or a heck of a way to say goodbye. Maureen McNelis
Protection Still Needed Dear Editor: Following up on the beachfront construction taking place in Fort Tilden.
Page 13 Looking at the work continuing on this "Shore Road plan" I have to ask why the old failed bulkhead is being removed along with the dunes that covered it? They provide some protection where now there is none. By the way, this work is continuing west of the buildings and I assume will end at the parking lot. I have also attached a picture of the roadway on the bay side of Riis Park showing the considerable damage that was done by the recent winter storms. As far as I know, there has been no significant work performed to repair the bay bulkhead wall and the storm sewers from letting bay water back flow onto the streets that occurred after Sandy. The demo of the buildings could be justified because they may collapse and might hurt someone. Yet a reasonable priority would be to protect the only roadway to the Marine Parkway Bridge for all of the Rockaway residents east of it. Jeremiah

Citywide Ferry Service Served Nearly 3 Million Riders in 2017 How did the ferry fare in 2017? According to the operators, better than expected with nearly three million riders before the year ended. Last week, the NYC Econonomic Development Corporation and Hornblower, revealed the ridership numbers for the new citywide NYC Ferry service. The service, across the city’s current four routes, saw approximately 2,890,000 riders in 2017, which was 34 percent higher than initial 2017 projections. Based on preliminary ridership projections, NYC Ferry was anticipated to have served approximately 2.1 million riders by the end of 2017. Due to the tremendous popularity the system has experienced, NYC Ferry has exceeded that projection by nearly 800,000 additional riders. How did Rockaway’s route do? Since the service launched in May 1, the Rockaway ferry saw approximately 545,000 riders throughout 2017. The
most popular route, the East River Route, which also launched May 1, saw 1,591,000 riders, which is a 17 percent increase from the former East River Ferry Route, which saw 1,358,000 riders in 2016. The South Brooklyn Route, which launched on June 1, saw 464,000 riders and the Astoria Route, which launched on August 29, saw 290,000 riders. In response to high rider-
ship, NYC Ferry recently announced that it will be adding capacity to six new boats starting in 2018. These new vessels will be outfitted with bigger engines and with a capacity to hold 349 passengers. This year will also see the addition of two new routes, to the Lower East Side and Soundview, so ridership numbers are expected to be even higher. NYC Ferry boats also completed more than 37,000 trips in 2017, traveling more than 350,000 miles. That’s more than the distance from the earth to the moon, and enough to circle the globe fourteen times. “NYC Ferry has proven to be more popular than we could have hoped, and nearly three million riders agree it’s the best way to get around the city,” NYCEDC President and CEO James Patchett said. “Now we’re looking forward to launching two more routes in 2018, helping even more riders connect to good jobs and op-
portunities.” “Almost three million riders have chosen to work, live, play throughout New York Harbor and discover new untapped waterfront destinations across the city with NYC Ferry," Cameron Clark, Senior VP for NYC Ferry operated by Hornblower, said. “We’re excited to continue building out the system and creating new opportunities and connections for riders with the launch of our Lower East Side and Soundview routes later this year.” Some other changes to the ferry service includes new schedules, at least for the winter. Starting Friday, January 20, the weekday schedule, with ferries leaving at a quarter past the hour, will remain the same. However, the weekend service will run every hour and a half starting at 6:30 a.m. from Rockaway and 8 a.m. from Pier 11, except the last two ferries will run on the hour, at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. in both directions. Manny Fiallo Remembered With Street Renaming By Katie McFadden
“Manuel Fiallo Jr. was not a community activist. That term seems insufficient. I think of him as a community philanthropist. Manny was the type of person you could meet for five minutes and would have you feeling as if you were lifetime friends. Manny was a truly genuine person,” Police Office Kevin Campbell of the 101st Precinct said. “This was a man that had a big heart,” Councilman Donovan Richards said. Yolanda Fiallo, wife of the late Manuel “Manny” Fiallo Jr. added, “He loved what he did. It was not a nine-to-five job. It was a 24hour, seven day a week run. He gave his blood, sweat and tears. His goal was to make a better Far Rockaway community for everyone.” And that’s why on a chilly Monday afternoon, so many from the Far Rockaway community stood outside of the Mott Avenue train station on Beach 22nd Street, to remember a man who meant so much to so many, with a street renaming that will keep his name alive forever. On Monday, January 15, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a day of service, a large crowd gathered to honor Manny Fiallo, who had dedicated his life to service. On May 2, 2017, Fiallo died suddenly, leaving behind a legacy and a hole in the hearts of many in the Far Rockaway community. Many spoke of how Fiallo was never the one for accolades, but on January 15, he was memorialized with a much-deserved street renaming, made possible by Councilman Donovan Richards. “For someone who gave so much to this community, what better way to honor the legacy of Manny Fiallo Jr. than on Martin Luther King Jr. Day? For those of us that spent a lot of time with Manny, he never looked for accolades, he did what was right for this community because he wanted to do what was right,” Richards said. Despite the cold, dozens gathered for an official
ceremony to unveil a new sign that read, “Manuel ‘Manny’ Fiallo Jr. Way,” as several spoke about what the Manny Fiallo way was. “Why is this sign going outside the Mott Ave train station? We want every person in Far Rockaway who gets off the A train, who comes out here when it’s beautiful, to look back at history and not to forget those who pounded the grounds when no one wanted to be here,” Richards said. “This past weekend, I was at the Beach 41st Houses and a young man was killed over his iPhone right outside. We truly must follow in Manny’s footsteps and get active and work with young people and tell them and show them, there is another way out here. That is the Manny Fiallo way. Manny united this peninsula. He brought people from Hammels to Redfern together. He was one of the only people that could do that. When something was brewing on these streets, we’d call him. He’d literally go out to put out that fire. This is what Manny did for us.” Several guests spoke of the many roles Fiallo played and organizations and projects that he was involved with, and there were many, from the Redfern Community Center to the Beach 41st Street Community Center, Child Center of NY, Fathers Alive in the Hood Movement, the Swim Strong Foundation, to serving as Sergeant At Arms for the 101 Precinct Community Council, a NYC Continued on page 17

Parks Department community liaison, Outreach Coordinator for the Far Rockaway Police Athletic League (PAL) and a parent coordinator at the NYC Department of Education. He was also involved in the Pinkest Precinct contest, helping to decorate the 101st Precinct in pink for breast cancer month on October, National Night Out Against Crime, annual turkey drives and holiday toy drives, the Santa Sleigh Run, Hurricane Sandy recovery, the Break Every Chain lock-in event, RBI Baseball, the Stop the Violence Women’s Softball League, the Dominique Jameson Memorial fashion/ talent show, job and health fairs, and many more. One of his biggest projects was starting the Stack Bundles Stop the Violence Basketball Tournament, which brought different parts
THURSDAY, JANUARY 18, 2018 of the community together for a summer tournament that sent a message of peace. Being involved in so many different things, Fiallo touched a lot of people, and many of them came out to speak about the impact he left. “Manny was a simple brother who simply understood that it’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness. Manny understood that you can sit and cry and complain, or you can do something about it. He was not prepared to sit by idly as our youth die like flies. He realized that he might not be able to save everybody, but he was gonna
save somebody,” State Senator James Sanders said. Officer Campbell, who worked closely with Fiallo on projects that required police involvement, spoke about the first time he met Fiallo. “In the summer of ‘09 I met Manny Fiallo Jr while handing out crime prevention flyers. He was entering each store on Central Ave. I said, ‘are you following me?’ He responded, ‘no, you’re the cop, are you following me?’ From there a relationship evolved,” Campbell said, adding that he encouraged Fiallo to join the 101 Precinct Community Council. “Manny Fiallo was a charismatic man whose greatest gifts were his generosity, his passion and his soul. He was not a politician, he was not a wealthy man, but he could make events happen just with an idea and his own passion. With all that said, if I could call Pope Francis and have Manuel C. Fiallo Jr. canonized as a saint, I would. I know no one more deserving than that.” Many said that the new sign will remind them of
Page 17 everything that Fiallo stood for. “When this sign is unveiled, every day I walk down this street and pass it, I’ll remember, the three characteristics of Manny that I carry with me as I live the Manny Fiallo way. He believed in love, he believed in community and he believed in trust. He got us to trust each other in ways that I’ve never seen before,” a man known as Deep, said. Others spoke of how they’ll continue to carry on Fiallo’s legacy even though he’s not here. “Manny was the true meaning of community. He pulled this entire community together and we can’t let that fall apart because he’s not here. I used to say ‘Manny, you’re just going nonstop’ and I later leatned why he did it nonstop. He just wanted it to happen. We as a community have to come together, and do it together, no matter what it takes,” Lakia Echols said. The ceremony concluded with a closing prayer, a performance by Rock Nation, and the unveiling of the new sign that will remind those who pass it of the Manny Fiallo way.

fused in the apartment, where the fire started. The building (8800) was out of compliance with HPD inspection rules, which require annual inspections. HPD added that “the board was aware they were out of compliance and brought on a new management company to get back into compliance and improve overall conditions at the coop. Inspections by the new management company have already been scheduled to begin on Tuesday, January 16. At HPD's instruction, restarting the annual inspection process was a top priority for the new management company. The inspections, which did start on Tuesday, were scheduled before the fire took place. Residents were given notices about the upcoming inspections on January 10, just two days before the fire. The notice said that the inspections would include, “looking at the condition of the apartments, smoke detectors, windows, electrical outlets,

and general visual examination of all apartments from January 16 to January 24, 2018. However the inspection would be a few days too late with an unexpected tragedy ensuing on January 12. HPD referred to a statement from the FDNY claiming that “a halogen lamp caused the fire, but extra items in the apartment did not have impact on the cause of the fire or the firefighting operations. “While there is no indication that the occupant was a hoarder, hoarding is a health and safety violation and in extreme circumstances we have moved to evict people. We encourage buildings to work with tenants to resolve health situations first before resorting to eviction, HPD said. Meanwhile residents and board members and even some who live in the area but not in Dayton continue to squabble on Facebook, flinging accusations and insults. HPD, as of press time, still has not completed their audit of the list of voting shareholders for DBP’s still pending board of directors’ election.

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Acute diarrhea is defined as lasting less than 14 days and can cause significant illness and even death in rare cases, especially among older patients. In the U.S., there are about 179 million cases of acute diarrhea, or gastroenteritis, per year, including about 48 million cases of food-borne illness. Most adults who have not traveled abroad have no known cause identified for their acute diarrhea, although most non-food related cases are usually viral with norovirus accounting for about 26 percent of cases seen in ERs. Norovirus is often the cause of outbreaks of vomiting and diarrhea on cruise ships, and 90 percent of deaths related
to norovirus occur in people 65 and older. Bacterial infections potentially susceptible to antibiotics (Shigella, Salmonella, E coli, etc.) account for less than nine percent of cases seen in ERs. On the other hand, in traveler’s diarrhea (TD), which is food-borne, antibiotics have been shown to help shorten the duration of symptoms, although the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) advises against using antibiotics to treat mild cases of TD. TD is commonly seen in people who travel to Mexico and the Caribbean, although it can be seen in travel to most areas outside of the U.S. TD is often caused
Page 25
Runs A Risk
by bacterial contamination of food or water. Acute diarrhea including TD can be treated with probiotics (if occurring after a course of antibiotics), products containing bismuth subsalicylate (i.e. Pepto Bismol), and loperamide (i.e. Imodium). It is important to remember that taking products that contain bismuth will cause the stool to turn black. Taking antibiotics for any reason including acute diarrhea has risks and side effects. One of the largest risks occurs when the antibiotics suppress the normal gut bacteria and allow an overgrowth of more resistant, toxic bacteria such as Clostridium difficile (C diff). The antibiotics with the highest risk of C diff are fluoroquinalones (Cipro, Levaquin). C diff infections, most often seen in hospitalized patients on antibiotics, can cause severe bloody diarrhea, dehydration, shock, and death. Therefore the ACG guidelines for treating acute diarrhea take a stepwise approach depend-
ing on (1) presence of dysentery (grossly bloody stools); (2) severity of illness (moderate: forced change in activities; severe: total disability); (3) presence of fever of 101 degrees or higher; (4) travel abroad. Oral hydration is recommended for all forms of diarrhea whether mild or severe. Plus the ACG guidelines are as follows: (1) antibiotics should be avoided for routine acute diarrheal infection as it is usually viral and mild (without fever) TD; (2) probiotics or prebiotics are not recommended for treatment of acute diarrhea in adults, except in cases of post-antibiotic diarrhea; (3) disabling TD with fever should be treated with azithromycin; (4) in patients with TD being treated with antibiotics, loperamide should be added; (5) persistent diarrhea (lasting 14-30 days) should be evaluated with stool culture and (obviously) a visit to the doctor. RESTORATIVE YOGA
Today I guided a beautiful group in a two-hour restorative yoga practice. Each shows up with a different reason for being there and all leave with a sense of calm. It is permission to do nothing for two hours. To feel the breath, relax, quiet the mind — think of nothing — and just be in different forms, stimulating different healing energies inherent in our bodies. Settling in to restorative poses brings about a deep sense of comfort and relaxation. An antidote to stress. One can say it is a form of meditation. Restorative yoga uses props such as bolsters, blocks, blankets, pillows, etc. to allow the body to
surrender, to let go of any muscular tension and relax. Once that physical rest and relaxation begins to take hold, there comes a stillness, an inner quiet. Practicing restorative yoga with a group of people has an added benefit of sharing all of the peaceful energy and vibrations. If you can’t make it to a workshop, here are three poses you can do at home. Remember, whatever “pose” you find yourself in, you should feel comfortable and supported. You can modify to fit your own needs. Mountain Brook: (bolster or pillow and two blankets or large towels, eye pillow) Place the pillow on your mat (or towel) and
the towel folded in a rectangle to be under your shoulder blades. Place a blanket or towel under your head. Place your knees over the bolster or pillow, bring the palms to the sides of your body, tuck the chin in and roll down. Your shoulders should be on the mat, the rectangular towel should be positioned under your shoulder blades, providing a raising of the chest. If your chin is higher than your forehead, make a roll with the end of the towel under your head and place in the neck area. Place the eye pillow over your eyes and relax. To come out of the pose, bring the knees to the chest, gently roll to the right side, then gently roll up pressing the left hand onto the mat. Supported Child’s Pose: (bolster or pillow, several blankets or towels) Place the knees to either side of the bolster or pillow with the feet close together. Walk the hands out in front, lengthen your spine and rest your chest and head to one side on the bolster or pillow. You may place blankets or towels folded in rectangles on top of the
pillow for added height. You can place a blanket under the back of the knees. Wherever you feel discomfort, place a support in that area. Turn the head to the other side after a while. Surrender to the supports. To come out of the pose, press the palms into the mat and gently roll up, neck and head last to come up. Waterfall: (bolster or pillow, blankets or towels) Place the pillow about 3” in front of the wall with a blanket or towel behind it. Lay on your side with your hip resting on the end of the bolster. Roll onto your back and extend legs up the wall with your hips centered on the bolster. To come out of the pose, bring the knees to the chest and roll to the side or press the soles of the feet on the wall and push back off the pillow or bolster. Happy Restoring! May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace. (This was a revised version of the Feb. 8, 2015 column)

Find Your Voice
Dear Enchantress,
I feel a bit shy sharing this, but I like how you answer other people, so here I go. I don't like myself, I don't like how I look, I don't like the idea of getting older, AND I don't like how I sound, my voice annoys me. I don't even have my voice on my voicemail. My biggest secret is that I have always wanted to be a singer. So not liking my voice is horrible. When I get nervous, my voice gets really low and people are always saying, "what" to me. Sometimes I repeat, and sometimes I just wave it off and say "whatever," or "don't worry about it." I know this is a horrible way to live, and I get mad at myself for not even looking in the
mirror, and when I'm in photos I always hide behind other people. I'm not fat and I'm not skinny. I'm just an average, not really good at anything woman. I have friends, I hang out with them and do things, but inside I'm a giant mess. I constantly think people are just tolerating me. I have a couple of really close girlfriends, and we all kind of feel this way, but don't talk about it often. We honestly drink these feelings away. Ugh. Is there any help for me? I'll be 40 this year, and feel like my life is over and boring and barely have any hope. Dear Secret Singer, Goddess! I feel called to attention action. I wish with all my

being, I could get you to some workshop I'm offering, or on the phone. For now, I will reply here, and trust that it's enough. I FIRST want to celebrate you for writing. How COURAGEOUS of you to take this first step of reaching out. The next step is to begin a journal, start to get in the habit of writing these four things most nights: • One thing (can be person, place, item, situation) that you are grateful for • One thing you forgive yourself for this day (can be current or from the past) • One thing or person you forgive that day (can also be past or present, and can include strangers and people you don't know that well) • Statement about your physical and/or mental health Starting to document these four things is a great beginning to getting all the "stuff" out of your head, creating more brain space. You can always write more if you wish. Keep the journal near your bed with a pen, perhaps a pretty pen, so it's easy and doable. I'm also curious if you have some interest in going to a move-
Page 27 ment class? It can be yoga, zumba or BURLESQUE with me!!! Or anything really. Our minds are not always our friends, and can be limiting and repeat negative voices that are simply not true. Moving your body will stimulate lots of good things that help the negative voices get quieter, and not mean so much. Here is one thing I know to be true. You are unique, your voice, your thoughts matter, your presence matters to many. You, especially you, are a one of a kind. You are priceless because there is only one of you! You are not alone, and because you are allowing yourself to be seen here in this advice column, something will shift for you. I already care about you, and have a personal interest in supporting your voice to be heard, whether it's through speaking up or singing. You are not alone. Around 3 a.m. this past Sunday morning, I was awakened from a sound sleep by a furry face burrowing into my neck, accompanied by the unmistakable smell of dog breath. As I struggled to open both my eyes, I saw our family canine, Zach, wagging his tail while yipping softly. I immediately recognized Zach's behavior as his way of letting me know that if I didn't jump out of bed in the next 30 seconds, he fully intended to slink off to some hidden corner of the house and quietly make a substantial deposit, which would go unnoticed until some time later when the morning quiet of the home would be shattered by someone screaming, "What is that god-awful smell?" Struggling to rise off the bed and then stumbling out of the bedroom in the darkness, I made my way to the sliding glass door leading to the outside patio area. Opening the slider, I stood aside in order to allow Zach unimpeded access to the outside world where he could go about his business, which I would have to clean up later that morning. The outside air temperature, only 17 degrees with a 15 mph northwest wind and a wind chill of three degrees, stopped Zach dead in his tracks just short of stepping through the door. Sitting down, Zach gave me a look,

Dog Duty which could only mean, "If you think I am going out there so you can close the door behind me, leaving me out in the cold while you go back to sleep, you have another thing coming!" That left the both of us standing just inside the open door, staring at each other with the cold air pouring into a rapidly cooling house. Now Zach has been with our family as a rescue from a kill shelter for more than 12 years, and as far as he and I are concerned, we both know who the alpha male is. I reached across and turned on the outside patio light and with finger pointing outside to the deck, sternly ordered the dog to "Go!" Zach remained seated while glowering at me with a face that clearly said, "Do you really think I am that stupid?" Okay, truth be told, Cesar Millan I'm not, and the only dog whispering I managed was a sigh of silent surrender. Clad only in my Hanes briefs and a Day-Glo orange Rockaway Times t-shirt, I stepped out into the cold, muttering under my breath, "C'mon, let's get this over with!" I had to walk to the far end of the deck as Zach would not allow me to get between him and the door, while he slowly walked about in circles sniffing the deck boards to determine which spot would be perfect for his early morning constitutional. At one point, while I thought he was preoccupied, I attempted to slowly sidle along the deck fence back towards the sliding glass door and warmth, only to have Zach immediately trot the same way, letting me know in no uncertain terms that there was no way I was going to be allowed to leave him outside alone and forgotten. With a decision being made, Zach finally set about his business, causing me to rhythmically punch the air
while shouting, "It's about damn time!" Paying me absolutely no mind, Zach finished up and trotted back inside the house without so much as a thank you glance my way as he disappeared through the kitchen. As for me, now stiff from the cold, I shuffled back in the house, closing the sliding glass door behind me and headed towards the bedroom with visions of a warm bed and blankets dancing in my head, whereupon three of our four cats who had been watching this whole incident with some amusement from their warm perches on the kitchen table, decided to make the most of the situation and started yelling (yes, they yell!) for their breakfast. As much as I wanted to blow them off, I suddenly realized they are all indoor cats possessed with remarkably good litter pan habits, so I decided to accommodate them all prior to climbing back into bed. Some 15 minutes later, I quietly crept back into the bedroom so as not to disturb my belov-
Page 31 ed Grace (She who must be obeyed) only to find my side of the bed completely covered by a geriatric 70-pound mutt blissfully asleep on his back, front paws up in the air and snoring loudly. I finally gave up all hope of returning to bed, but prior to leaving the bedroom, I wanted to impress on Zach who's the alpha male in this pack. I leaned over the damn dog and whispered in his ear, "Later today you and I are going to watch ‘Cujo.’ I want you to pay particular attention to the end of the movie and how Dee Wallace deals with a big old dog that finally pissed her off!” I'm quite sure Cesar Millan would have been proud of me, but somewhere in the back of mind I could almost hear Zach thinking to himself, "You ain't no Dee Wallace!" To make matters worse, later that morning, I received a call from a neighbor across the street inquiring if everything was alright. "I was up early this morning and I saw you in your underwear disco dancing, badly I might add, on your second floor deck with your dog." Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?
Teen Fatally Shot in Edgemere A 15-year-old boy was killed last weekend. Trevor Rhudd was found dead in the staircase of his building on Beach Channel Drive and Beach 41st on Saturday, January 13. Rhudd, nicknamed Bubba, was found in the second-floor stairwell of the building around 1:30 p.m. He had gunshot wounds to his torso and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. According to the New York Daily News, Rhudd’s mother, Annie Johnson, claimed that her son was murdered while being robbed of his
phone. "My son was being robbed for his phone by his own friend,” Johnson told the Daily News. Following the shooting, a 31-year-old suspect that was seen on surveillance video, was arrested, but was not found to be connected to the murder. The incident continues to be under investigation as police search for the suspect. On Thursday, January 18, at 5 p.m., all are welcome to remember “Bubba” with a candlelight vigil, hosted by Rock Safe Streets, at 433 Beach 40th Street.

More than anything else in a given week, I get emails with pictures from Pinterest. Someone will want me to get them a faucet that they saw or a farm sink they want for their kitchen. Everyone wants to know how to make this or that, or they want their new bathroom renovation to “ look exactly like the picture.” The trouble with Pinterest is that a lot of the pictures are not from real houses. Designers create them; most of the times to advertise or promote items that are available for a relatively short amount of time. They’re not pictures from normal houses. One time a young woman sent me a picture of a 350-square foot marble palace, that a mansion in Somewhere, USA called a bathroom. Trouble was her renovation was a five by eight holding cell of a bathroom. Most people,
when doing home renovation, lack perspective or watch too much HGTV. You cannot trust a picture for reference of what you actually want your project to look like. What I recommend is using the picture as a guide, this way you have something to go on, but please do not expect it to look like that original picture in the end. Those expectations will surely leave you disappointed and you’ll drive yourself crazy trying to find the exact match. The worst thing about Pinterest is that if you somehow find the item that is in the picture and it is available, it is almost always out of the budget. Most items are custom built, one of a kind creations. There is a major market for this level of construction, but for the average weekend warrior, it’s out of their league. Pinterest overall is a great resource for IDEAS. This is how it should be
Slow Cooker Tomato Parmesan Pot Roast By Sharon Feldman

The Trouble With Pinterest used. My wife and I use Pinterest before we start on any project in our house. It saves an enormous amount of time compared to driving to individual design showrooms for inspiration. My wife has a folder for every category in our home and it serves as a great record for future use. I always wondered why Pinterest didn’t feature items that could
actually be bought direct from the site. This is what other popular design websites like Houzz do with great success. I know people who would pay anything and actually could afford to, if only they had the access to it. If anyone can make that happen, call me and we’ll make a lot of money together. As I tell my own wife, one day our house will be on Pinterest.

From the Writers’ Club of PS/MS 114 A PROMISE IS A PROMISE; WE’RE KEEPERS-HOW ABOUT YOU?
It’s about two weeks into the New Year, and these kids are sticking to their life-changing New Year’s resolutions. In their first drafts, many students wrote, "New Year’s revolutions." As I corrected, there was a growing realization of the merit in this misspelling, especially since revolution can be defined as, “a sudden complete change in something.” What can I say — sometimes out of the mouths of babes come the weirdest, wackiest, wisest and most wonderful things. Good luck with your revolutions! Joan Diehl RYAN LEVY They say not to let your mind bully your body into believing it must carry the burden of its worries, but I feel like my mind is too powerful. The thoughts swirl in my mind like a whirlpool waiting to devour anything that floats by. My brain twists into a knot and explodes into anger. The anger bursts out of my ears and hovers over my head like a cloud, following me everywhere. This feeling of stress is like a ferocious beast trying to escape my body. 2018 is coming and by then, I want this beast free! Tests, homework and school are the only words running through my mind. My head spins like a top, and shivers zoom down my back like a roadrunner. I try reading a book, but the words just appear in my mind and disappear. They fade away as if the beast consumed them. School is a blur to me. Numbers and words register in my mind, but the more that registers, the more the beast grows. Thoughts play tricks on me and the future gets me worried. It’s like my body hears faint cries of a wolf that’s trapped, so many cries that my body can’t handle it anymore. So if 2018 hears me, my only resolution is for my stress to leave me in the New Year! ELLEN ZWERLING They say no matter how far away we are, we’re always
looking at the same moon. I hope that’s true because ever since my best friends moved, my life has been like kids with no Christmas presents. So I hope we’re looking at the same moon. The happiness has been drained from my life. I’ve been lonely. I’m the Mickey with no Minnie. I need my friends, but they have to stay in their new home in San José, Costa Rica for three years. Each day feels longer as the three years get nearer, and it hasn’t even been a year yet. Every week drags slower than a dog’s tail when he is sad. If I could get the Lafflers back, it would be like winning the 20-million-dollar lottery. Like a traitor, their dad’s job disguised itself as a friend. Then it made them go away, a billion, trillion miles away. They were the only key to my happiness. We would play with each other every day like siblings. We would make up clubs, hide in closets, and act out our favorite book or movie scenes. We would walk our dogs together, wash cars together, live together. The youngest Laffler, Darcy, was my Elmo. Funny, caring, and uplifting, she poured brightness and laughter into my every day. The middle Laffler, Dermot, was my library. He had all the books I needed. The oldest Laffler, Delaney, was my mentor, one of the only people I looked up to. Mr. and Mrs. Laffler were my second parents; when I needed help they were the people I looked for. If I could keep myself busy, I wouldn’t be so sad. That is what I need to work on, so I found my perfect resolution. I’ll keep myself busy, like my mom. This would definitely be a start to help kick my sadness away, far away. GERARD GUGLIELMO “He can’t play hockey,” someone whispered. “It’s like leading a lamb to slaughter,” someone else said. And they were right. The only good thing about me being on ice is being a clown; slipping, sliding and
slumping on the ice, as the crowd laughs at my monkeyish performance. I struggle trying not to let out the Mississippi River all over my face. All of a sudden, the puck swoops past me as quick as lightning, and in a pace it runs into the goal. One of my teammates takes the puck far up near the goal, with a wicked laugh so scary it even scared himself a bit. The goalie shuts him down, and he passes the puck to me. Then I feel my face melt; I have everyone’s attention. I get my hockey stick ready and then disaster strikes. The puck starts to dance around the ice, and the blade of my ice skate gets caught in it. I go down like an avalanche. Our enemy team gets control of the puck, and scores a goal. That’s a loss for my team, and an even bigger loss for me. My New Year’s resolution is to become a better hockey player, and maybe next year I’ll be able to score my first goal! LAYLA DUGGAN It was a cool night on New Year’s Eve as I practiced my song of the month, “Mary Ann” on my flute. At that moment, Mary Whatever was not on my side, Neither was the whole idea of music. Me and music don’t work together in harmony one single bit. Me and music are like a ham sandwich and pickle juice — they don’t work together at all! If I had the choice to play a song on my flute or do a million math problems, I’d do the math problems. If I had the choice to take a halfhour lesson of music or swim with sharks, I’d swim with the sharks. My song, “Mary Ann” is supposed to sound like an early-morning canary’s chirp, but when I play, it sounds like a bus ramming into a chimpanzee. When I am having a good day, it occasionally will sound like a window shattering. At least it sounds better than a bus crash. What did I ever do to you, Music, to make you hate
me so, so much? When I try to play a low A note, it’s like the evil Invisible Music Person’s hand comes out and pushes my fingers into a different key. When I try to tongue notes by saying “tee-tee,” the evil Invisible Music Person’s mouth comes out and booms, “tootoo.” When I try to name the correct note, it seems that the evil Music Person’s brain pops into mine and thinks of the wrong note. I’m pretty good at rhythm, though; at least they haven’t made an evil Invisible Music Person for rhythm! As I thought about all of this, I decided to make getting better at music my New Year’s resolution. MARCELLO VALENTINO “I HATE YOU!” It bursts out of me like a beast breaking out of its cage. This is my reaction every time my big brother annoys me. He yells something back and my head is about to explode because I’m so angry. Then my mom stomps down the stairs with a look on her face that makes me want to crouch behind the couch like a bunny trying to camouflage in the tall grass. Judging by Mom’s expression, I’m guessing what’s coming. Now I’m grounded because of him. I am so frustrated and feel like a bear that just got poked with a stick. Like a swarm of bees after someone swats their hive, I want to go at him. Then I yell, “I WISH I HAD A DIFFERENT BROTHER!!” and sprint up the stairs, slamming the door to my room. The next day is always the worst. I’ve lost my phone privileges so I can’t text my friends or have them come over and play soccer. I am so frustrated, and I regret yelling at my brother. I always tell myself that next time, I won’t explode. I won’t let the beast break out of its cage. I try to listen to myself saying I won’t get angry with him but the words always Continued on page 36

jump off my tongue like grasshoppers before I know it. I feel disappointed because I let myself down. I want to have peace and not war. In 2018, the monster inside me will not awaken. My New Year’s resolution is to not let my brother provoke me. Hurtful words will not erupt from my mouth like a volcano. 2018 will be a year of tolerance. MEGYN HARTMAN People say everything is possible, but when it comes to roller coasters and me, nothing is possible. Roller coasters and I are like peanut butter and pickles; we don’t go together. The first time I went on a roller coaster, it was as bad as getting stung by a hundred bees. I didn’t think it would be scary, so my dad and I got into our seats and strapped in. I closed my eyes the whole time and gripped the handles
so tightly, my knuckles turned white. The minute it took off, it felt like a ghost touched my eyes. I was terrified. When I got off, I felt like I had been spinning for hours. My legs felt like jello as I ran to my mom and buried my head into her chest. A waterfall poured from my eyes. “It was playing tricks on me. It was tossing me back and forth and up and down. We stopped and suddenly it felt like my stomach had dropped to the ground. It was really scary, Mom,” I whispered to her while wiping my tears. I never went on a roller coaster again. So this year my New Year’s resolution is to be brave the next time I come face-toface with a roller coaster. “Mr. New Year, next year, please give me the courage to beat that angry beast and overpower the fire-breathing dragon. I want to be brave. I want the courage to face my fears,” I whispered. Like author Susan Gale says, “Sometimes you don’t realize your own strength until you come face-to-face with your greatest weakness."

A CALL FOR ARTISTS!
Calling all artists! The Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) is looking for your work for two upcoming shows. To mark Women’s History Month in March, for the 10th year, RAA is hosting the exhibit, Of Women to honor women and female artists. Of Women aims to recognize and highlight the remarkable women in our lives and the significant feats they have done no matter how vast or small. Of Women is open to and inclusive of all women artists, regardless of gender identity, self-identity, expression, status, dysphoria or non-conformance. All artistic mediums are welcome. The exhibit will be on display from March 10 through April 8 at RAA's sTudio 7 Gallery, Fort Tilden. The show will be juried by Angel Bellaran. Bellaran is a curator, art-historian, and educator, who has spent the last decade pursuing a passion for contemporary art and - specifically - the study of international
curatorial and artistic practices. The deadline for submissions is February 16 at 2 p.m. Visit www.rockawayartistsalliance.org/ofwomen for more details. RAA’s April exhibit will be The Mayfly. “The Mayfly is a multimedia exhibition about the transient nature of our lives; the fleeting fragments we experience against the constant pressure of permanence. The Mayfly explores the residue that the temporal leaves behind; what these brief junctures imprint on us and how we are inclined to express that. With this exhibition, we seek to share stories of ephemerality and how the briefest of moments create powerful emotions that last a lifetime,” the RAA says. The Mayfly will be on display from April 21 through May 6. The deadline for submissions is March 21 at 2 p.m. Visit www. rockawayartistsalliance.org/ themayfly for more details.
