Ariola On 100 Day Plan
In keeping with her 100 Day Plan, Councilwoman Joann Ariola met with several store owners along the Beach 129th Street business district. “It is important for me to have, in person, discussions with business owners along the peninsula,” Ariola said. “In meeting with the various store owners, I learned that they shared many concerns but also had issues that related to their specific business. Our small businesses are the economic engine that fuels the city’s economy. I will continue to be their voice in
city government to help them rebound from the pandemic.” As part of the plan in the early days of her tenure, Ariola also met with Dan Falt, Deputy Chief of Programs and Project Management Division of the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). “We discussed the on-going project to fortify our beaches with additional groins, an armored dune and sand re-nourishment.” Prompted by calls from concerned constituents, Ariola discussed the monitoring of seismic activity due to rocks being dumped on to the beach to build the groins, alternatives to the current staging area at Beach 116th Street and the proposed ADA crossover ramps. Ariola will remain in contact with the USACE as the project continues along the Peninsula.

The New York State Senate is looking to honor local high school students who display exemplary academic achievements and who volunteer to do great work in their own communities. In a press release, State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. announced his participation in this year’s New York State Senate’s Youth Leadership Recognition Awards program. The New York State Senate’s Youth Leadership Recognition Award program honors outstanding students who will become our future leaders. Teachers and staff from schools within Addabbo’s Senate district can nominate current high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors who excel not only academically, but through leadership in extracurricular and volunteer activities. Students selected to receive the New York State Senate Youth Leadership Recognition Award will receive a congratulatory personalized certificate from
Senator Addabbo. Addabbo said, “This is a great annual program that allows New York State to recognize and honor the amazing students we have across the state. Many of our students are not just stars in the classroom, but also stars in athletics, in the arts, and in their communities. I hope to see more students from my district not only nominated but winning this prestigious award.” All nominations must be submitted online at Senator Addabbo’s website by March 25, 2022, by filling out the online nomination form, attaching a recommendation letter and the student’s brief statement about their accomplishment(s). Nominations may come from teachers, administrators, counselors, or other school faculty members, and they can find the nomination page on the New York State Senate website: nysenate.gov/eform/submit/ new-york-senate-youth-leadership.

On the morning of January 9, while most were on their way to work or school, a horrific fire ripped through a Bronx highrise apartment, killing 17 people, including eight children, with the youngest just two years old. However, that fire, the thirdworst residential fire in the U.S in four decades and the deadliest fire in NYC since 1990, did not just rip through the building, leaving families broken and the Bronx community stunned. It ripped through the hearts of New Yorkers. Local principal of The Randolph Holder School for Social Justice in Far Rockaway, Phoebe Robinson, was one of those New Yorkers, and she determinedly took on the herculean task of mobilizing her fellow DOE District 75-wide school community to host a donation drive for the fire’s victims. Once given the green light to proceed by D75 Superintendent Jennifer Carreón, Robinson reached out to the entire district last Tuesday, January 11, and within one day, 22 schools got on board. Even more amazingly, in a mere two days, Robinson with her fellow D75 community members, collected and delivered the items to the Bronx with the help of the 101st Precinct’s police officers in three packed U-Haul on Friday, January 14. D75 represents NYC DOE schools in Queens South. Of the 22 D75 schools that got on board for the donation drive, seven are from Rockaway—The Bay School-P.S./M.S. 105, Scholars' Academy, Lighthouse Elementary-P.S. 106Q, The Randolph Holder School for Social Justice-27Q253, The Belle Harbor School-P.S./M.S. 114, Robert Vernam School-P.S./M.S. 42, and The Bays Water School-P.S. 104. For Robinson, the objective of the two-day donation drive called, “D.27 SCEWP's It Up & Delivers,” (SCEWP is the D27 acronym, which stands for "Self-Regulation & Student Agency, Communication/ Collaboration, Engagement &
Empathy, Work Habits/Organization, Persistence & Perseverance), was not to host an elongated drive, it was to respond to an immediate need. “The understanding was that the drive would have a quick turnaround of two days. Losing students in our schools is heartbreaking and sets off a difficult series of emotions that resurfaces at just hearing of such a horrific tragedy. I just wanted to offer our district an opportunity to lean into our colleagues in the Bronx because I know that so many of us want to do something to help, but don’t necessarily know the pathway to getting it done. My school is The Randolph Holder School for Social Justice, and this fire in the Bronx is a social justice issue as people were displaced, and there would certainly be many challenges in terms of access to quality resources and affected needs for these families. The flyers were sent out to schools last Tuesday, by Wednesday, schools signed up, and by last Friday, the donations were en route to the Bronx,” Robinson said. With an impressive 22 D75 schools on board, next on Robinson’s to-do list was securing transportation to pick up the donations and deliver them to the Bronx. The 101st Precinct’s C.O. Robinson; Det. Falero; Det. Acevedo; P.O.s Blanchette, Henry, Brand and Edwards not only volunteered to drive, but even reserved two huge U-Haul vans. P.S. 63 Ozone Park parent, Tiffany Placeres, also volunteered to drive with another U-Haul, genContinued on page 7

could do,” Welsome said. And actionable the D27 donation drive was. “It was overwhelming to see the rooms filled with donations, and to see firsthand what we gave, went directly into the hands of the families,” Principal Robinson shared. For Scholars’ 12-graders, Ehidianen A., Amanda P. and Brianna L., attending a D27
two-day drive was the power in D27’s students recognizing the strength of their voices and uniting to promote something so tremendous. Scholars’ Academy Principal Michele Smyth agreed. Smyth said, “I was blown away by the outpouring of support by Scholars’ entire school community. Though DOE’s communication system was partially paralyzed during the two days we were pushing the drive, the students, families and staff worked in tandem to quickly get the message out, collect items, and ultimately do their part to make Principal Robinson’s initiative with District 75 successful.” For P.S./M.S. 114 Principal Welsome, it was moving to witness not just the students, but the entire school community’s outpouring of love to their fellow NYC Bronx residents. “We sent out the mission to our families on Wednesday, and it was amazing to see not just the students, but the families band together to send in clothing, blankets, sheets, toiletries, and more. I truly feel that the people of the Rockaways and Breezy Point always do whatever they can to help. Often you see these type of tragedies in the news, and this drive gave people something actionable they
school really instills the ethic of always paying it forward. Ehidianen A., Student Government president, also an active member of the Borough and Chancellor's Student Advisory Council, said, “It’s important to help a community in need, whether you know them or not. I just want to keep putting myself out there to make a difference in people’s lives.” Amanda P., Key Club secretary, who also sits on the Community Executive Council as D27 Student Representative, said, “Unity was a major aspect of this initiative, and for Principal Robinson to mobilize the district so quickly, really shows how powerful D27 and NYC are as a whole.” As for Brianna L, Key Club president, amidst personal challenges in life, one should still think of others. “It makes me feel good to know that I can still help people regardless of what I’m going through,” she said. Principal Robinson, who tried to shy away from any recognition for what she and her D27 colleagues pulled together in two short days, is especially proud of her district. “I put out the call, but it was really everyone who made our initiative as successful as it was. Truly proud to be a member of D27,” Robinson said.

Girls just want to have fun and now Reid’s Studio 28 is the hottest spot in town for girls to party, feel glamorous and get a little creative. After many months of preparation ahead of hosting their first girl’s birthday party, Reids Studio 28 is ready to keep the party going. Since taking over Rocco’s Salon in May 2021, Sharon Johannesen Nicholsen has been hard at work transforming it into Re-
id’s Studio 28. From the start, the local hairdresser envisioned hosting kids’ glamour parties in the space. On Sunday, January 16, that vision finally became reality when Nicholsen held her first successful birthday for a local eight-year-old and 12 of her friends. After the salon closed up shop on Saturday, Nicholsen and her team got to work transforming the studio into the perfect parContinued on page 12

ty place for girls. With safety as priority, they put away the scissors, chemicals and hot tools and brought in the pink chair covers, party tent and carpet, glitter walls and more, and welcomed the girls to party on Sunday afternoon. The girls got to enjoy an afternoon of pampering with hair, glamour manicure and sparkly makeup stations where the girls got to add a little sparkle to their look with facial jewelry stickers. Once their look was complete, they got to don feather boas and pose for glamour photo shoots and take their model photos home with them. They also got to engage in some arts and crafts, play games, practice hairstyles on mannequins, have a disco dance party, and what would a party be without pizza and cake for the birthday girl? By the end, it had the girls telling their parents, “I don’t want to go,” showing that Reid’s Studio’s birthday parties are a big hit. “That made my heart melt,” Nicholsen said. After months of hard work building out the space and delays due to Covid, hosting that first successful party was a relief for Nicholsen. “I’m so glad the first one is out of the way. I wanted everything perfect and when it was over, it was a sigh of relief,” Nicholsen said. With everything going on with Covid, Nicholsen wasn’t sure if calls for parties would come in. But she already has two parties booked for the month. “I think parents have had it with kids not being able to do anything or have a little celebration,” she said. “It was so nice to see the kids come together. They were so excited. My goal is just to make them happy, make them feel beautiful and have fun and bring some normalcy to kids.” Offering glamour parties to girls is a longtime goal for Nicholsen. After all, the hairdresser used to own a party store. “It stemmed back from that because I liked doing the party store and now I have a salon so it’s a good fit and it’s good for the neighborhood,” Nicholsen said. “I’m looking
The Rockaway Times forward to hosting more parties going forward.” Nicholsen already has another party this weekend and has plans for future parties that may include sand art or make your own lip gloss as part of the arts and crafts, and maybe even a chocolate fountain for kids to dip pretzels and decorate them, so she’s looking forward to future bookings. And she’s offering a special. “We’re giving $100 off for the first 10 parties as long as parents sign off on consent for photos during the party that we can use for advertising. It’s a big savings and with real life photos, people can get to see the full action and what we do here with the kids having a good time,” Nicholsen said. Parties are offered Saturday nights for pre-teens, and on Sunday or after school on Mondays for the younger girls. Sunday mornings are also open for bridal parties to get ready for a wedding. Reid’s Studio 28 is located at 173 Beach 116th Street. For inquiries or to book a party, call 516-974-1953.

Team Sister Strong for LLS By Katie McFadden
On May 7, 2019, the O’Sullivan family of Rockaway got the news no parent ever wants to hear. Nine-year-old Siobhan O’Sullivan had leukemia. A year later, on May 14, 2020, another family in Broad Channel received the same news—10year-old Rocco Pisani was also diagnosed with leukemia. Despite the devastating discoveries, the O’Sullivan and Pisani families found support within one another. Now they’re teaming up to pay it forward to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), an organization that aims to find better treatments than the ones Siobhan and Rocco have endured. After seeing what her sister Siobhan had to go through, Mary Louis Academy (TMLA) sophomore, Julia O’Sullivan, is leading a mission to pay it forward to those who helped her family with Team Sister Strong. She’s running for LLS’ 2022 Students of the Year by finding creative ways to raise money for the organization. “It was really tough seeing Siobhan go through leukemia. She was 9 and I was 12, so I thought ‘how could she be going through this.’ She went through chemo, went through numerous hospital visits within weeks and it was really tough,” Julia O’Sullivan said. But by July of 2021, they got some relief. Siobhan had completed her treatments “She’s completely cancer free,” Julia O’Sullivan said. And with that, Julia is now paying it forward. “I saw how difficult it was for me and my family to go through this and I don’t want to see other people going through what we went through and having it even worse than we did,” she said. Julia’s mom, Maura Ryan O’Sullivan explained that with efforts like Students of the Year, LLS is raising funds for research to make treatments, particularly for children, better going forward. “Right now, LLS is pushing this child initiative and 80% of money raised goes towards research and helping families. They hope
Julia and her TMLA teammates.
to do research so childhood treatments can be updated because they’ve been using the same treatments for adults and they’re not really geared toward children,” Maura O’Sullivan said. So Julia is helping with that mission by running for Student of the Year. Competing among 26 other teams in New York, Julia is aiming to raise the most money, so she enlisted in the help of some of her TMLA friends, family and the Pisani family to form Team Sister Strong. After being hit with the news of Rocco’s diagnosis, his mom, Jamie Pisani connected with Siobhan’s mom, Maura. “The first time I spoke to Maura, she gave me comfort and a hope that got me through this tough time. Her daughter Siobhan was in the background, and she had just gotten home from a day at the beach. Looking at Rocco laying in his bed being pumped with chemo, it was an image I couldn’t imagine for him in a year’s time, but Maura told me we’d get there, and I believed her. It was that hope that I leaned on during the hardest of times that followed, and that dream became a reality a year later,” Jamie Pisani said. Rocco knows firsthand how rough leukemia treatments can be after running into several obstacles. He suffered from a traumatic anaphylactic reaction after being allergic to his first chemo treatment. Another

chemo inflamed his intestines, leaving him unable to eat, and later resulting in an appendectomy. He also suffered from chemo toxicity, resulting in symptoms similar to a stroke. But despite such struggles, with a positive attitude and a little help, Rocco pulled through and is now doing maintenance. Amid their treatments, a friendship formed between the two young locals going through the same tough journey. When Siobhan and Rocco had treatments at the same time, they booked beds next to each other. “It was nice to know there was someone that could tell me it was gonna be ok and what I was getting next and what it could be like,” Rocco said of Siobhan. So when Julia reached out to the Pisani family and explained she was running for Student of the Year to help LLS, they were more than willing to assist. “I thought of all the people who donated to me when I was sick and if I could give back and help people to make it not as bad as what I went through, I want to help in whatever way I can,” Rocco Pisani said. Julia and Rocco recently got together to discuss ways in which to help boost fundraising. With fundraising beginning January 13 and only seven weeks to fundraise through March 3, they’ve hit the ground running with creative ways to fundraise. Each Team Sister Strong teammate has an individual fundraising link, and online donations immediately started pouring in, including a generous sponsorship from Bungalow Bar. This Saturday, January 22, Julia’s dad, Jerry O’Sullivan will be behind the stick offering up laughs and drinks at a fundraiser at RBQ (97-20 RBB) from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., while Kevin Carlton plays some live tunes. Liz Breslin-Smith of Blue Bungalow will be helping Julia by plugging the fundraiser on her Shopping Live with Liz feature. Julia is also coordinating fundraising events with TMLA. Bungalow Bar has also
agreed to host a big raffle drawing on Friday, February 11 at 7 p.m. with a DJ starting at 9 p.m. Four hundred $100 tickets are being sold for $10,000 worth of prizes ranging from $200 to $1,000. For tickets, see Rob Pisani on Facebook (Rob Barista) or at Bagel & Barista Station on Beach 116th Street. The Pisanis have also set up donation options at Bagel & Barista for customers when they check out. The Rockaway/Breezy Point/ Broad Channel February break ski and snowboard trip to Elk Mountain is also an opportunity to fundraise. Jimmy Dowd of St. James clothing has donated the printing for t-shirts for the event and the fundraiser. Those who donate to compete in a run competition will receive a t-shirt and whoever has the most runs down the mountain will get a gift from the Elk Mountain gift shop. Students of the Year teams cannot see how each team is doing but with all of the community support, the O’Sullivans say they’re already in good shape. “Rockaway is the most unique place in the entire world. Since Siobhan was diagnosed, people gave donations and helped cook and it has always just been overwhelming. Everyone has been supportive from the start,” Maura O’Sullivan said. “It feels really nice to know how many people want to help kids and all the people who are sick. I’m really grateful,” Rocco Pisani said. While Team Sister Strong is off to a good start, every penny counts toward helping Julia become Student of the Year and LLS. In addition to the fundraising events, the easiest way to donate is online. All of the money goes towards Team Sister Strong but Julia’s link can be found at: https:// events.lls.org/nyc/nycsoy22/ josullivan and Rocco’s link is: https ://events.lls.org/nyc/ nycsoy22/rpisani Rocco will also post updates on his Instagram account: fitnessforlife07

Women for Progress
Dear Editor: I always read Kami’s articles. I have the most amazing little 6-year-old son who is also on the spectrum and she has enlightened me with her experiences and have made them so 100% relatable for me. This week’s article hit close to home as she announced her 3 new year’s resolutions regarding her daughter’s autism. I decided a long time ago that in order to have people understand my SONshine
Dear Editor: A Texas synagogue where Jewish worshippers were taken hostage was the latest incident of antisemitism in this country. The Asian American / Pacific Islander community has seen hate-motivated violence this weekend in Manhattan. Immigrants and people of color across our city face a lack of access to safe housing and working conditions, as seen in the deaths following Hurricane Ida, the recent Bronx fire, and the
struggles of essential delivery and taxi workers who kept our city running during a pandemic. Rockaway Women for Progress (RWP) deepens our commitment to speak out against all forms of oppression, racial hatred, and hate-inspired violence. We welcome all to join us in helping make Rockaway a community that stands against hate and we stand with our neighbors across the city and country fighting for a more dignified life. I think Mark Wade needs a shout-out. Reflections of P I N E By Katie McFadden
After a postponement due to brutal cold on Saturday, many came out to brave the elements on a chilly Sunday, January 16 for P I N E. For those who missed this emotional performance that welcomes all to connect in communal grief, there’s one more chance to experience it this Saturday, January 22. Despite the cold and a quick change of date, m i c c a' s P I N E drew in a crowd on Sunday. Attendees kept warm with hot beverages and soup ahead of the performance. Without heavy coats, the dancers made the cold an afterthought as they expressed the many feelings and stages of grief among the forest of Christmas trees. As four dancers in red helped the main performer m i c c a manage their grief, m i c c a found the strength to carry on past the forest, with their grief still behind them, just not as
burdensome as it once was. As m i c c a found this strength to carry on, guests who had written dedications to lost loved ones on ribbons, were invited to walk through the forest and tie their ribbons to the trees, coming together in their mourning and connecting with others going through the same feelings. M i c c a will do it all again this Saturday (Keep a lookout on The Rockaway Times social media pages for any last-minute changes. Saturday is forecasted to be 28 degrees, so bundle up!) All are welcome to join starting at 3:30 p.m. to enjoy hot soup and beverages, make donations to help support the performers and write out their dedications. The performance begins at 4 p.m. and lasts under an hour. To make reservations, head to: http://micca.co Tickets are free but donations are welcome. Photos by Theresa Racine and Katie McFadden.

"It is with pleasure, sincerity and complete honesty that I sit down to write this review on behalf of Robin Shapiro. Suffice it to say, that the house I bought would not have happened were it not for extraordinary efforts. Robin went above and beyond the title of Real Estate Broker, at times wearing the hat of a plumber, electrician, interior designer, and quite simply, a friend. Robin, was immediately responsive throughout the process and never made me feel uncomfortable, no matter how many times I contacted her. Robin is very well connected within the community that she serves. If you are looking for an honest, and brutally candid broker, you are done. Look no further." zuser20160814054915309

WE GET EMAIL Continued from Page 15 bolder, more radical words of Martin Luther King Jr. posted around Rockaway this weekend (words that did his memory justice). In a neighborhood where I hear a lot about “law and order” and “keeping the peace,” I was moved to read a message displayed on 116th street that read: “we do not need allies who are more devoted to order than to justice.” Our peninsula focuses intently on public safety and maintaining the quality of life for its residents uptown while overwhelmingly ignoring systemic inequality in the east. In our hearts, we all know that everyone deserves safety and that there’s room for all of us to feel secure. MLK taught us that it’s not the absence of tension but the presence of justice that creates peace. Confronting complicated problems is and will continue to be uncomfortable. His words “White Americans must recognize
that justice for Black people cannot be achieved without radical changes in the structure of our society” were also posted in our neighborhood but were taken down before MLK Day. If we believe that all people are created equal, there is no step too small toward changing the systems of oppression that separate us. Ignoring inequality and any resistance to the status quo doesn’t make the problem go away, it just sets us back even more. What kind of community do we want to live in? I’d like to think that my neighbors want to live in a place where we build each other up instead of tearing each other down; a place where we can think critically and rise above our own individual concerns to the broader concerns of all of humanity. This is the type of community I want to live in - one where we can speak our truth, because, as Reverend King put it, "our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." Carolyn Cryan

Special attention should be paid to pipes in attics, crawl spaces and outside walls especially if there are openings which allow cold outside air to reach the pipes. Cable, television, and telephone lines can allow cold air to reach pipes through entry points. Vulnerable pipes which are accessible can be fitted with insulation sleeves or wrapping. Cracks and holes near water pipes could be sealed with caulking. A dripping faucet during extreme cold weather can prevent a burst pipe. The open faucet may provide relief from pressure built up by the ice block-
age. Both HOT and COLD water lines can freeze – the faucet drip should come from both lines. If dripping stops while the faucet is open, then a pipe may be frozen. The line may still need pressure relief; it may be a good idea to leave the faucet open – BUT keep an eye on turning it off when temperatures rise and the water starts running. If an open faucet produces no water, then call a plumber. Adam Magniccari, owner of Solo Plumbing, is my go-to plumber: 917-589-3363. If a pipe bursts, then turn off the water at the main shut-off valve. Call me. Love, Robin

INTENTION At the turn of a new year, we talk about intentions and what we’re going to start, what we’re going to improve, what we’re going to accomplish. I have been thinking about intention in the emotional feeling world - rather than from the mind space of doing and action. Came across this today: “Focus on feeling happy and every aspect of your life will become more beautiful.” Intention is focus. Before that is awareness. So what can we intend to make us feel better? What can we intend to transform feelings that do not
serve us? What can we intend to feel so good that it becomes contagious around us? Let’s start with the good feelings. When a good feeling is present, stop, feel it and proclaim an intention. May I feel many more moments of joy from this time forward. May I feel many more moments of calm from this time forward. May I feel many more moments of inspiration from this time forward. May I feel many more moments of happiness from this time forward. May I feel many more moments of peace from this time
forward. May I feel many more moments of beauty from this time forward. May I feel many more moments of abundance from this time forward. May I feel many more moments of gratitude from this time forward. May I feel many more moments of strength from this time forward. May I feel many more moments of love from this time forward. May I feel many more moments of compassion from this time forward. How do we transform anger, bitterness, fear, disgust, sadness, weakness, resentment, frustration, anxiety, rage, loneliness to feel better? When a negative emotion arises, stop, feel it and proclaim its opposite in an intention. May I feel many more moments of pleasure from this time forward. May I feel many more moments of sweetness & contentment from this time forward. May I feel many more moments of security from this time forward. May I feel many more moments of delight from this time forward. May I feel many more moments of happiness from this time for-
ward. May I feel stronger from this time forward. May I feel forgiving & tolerant from this time forward. May I feel satisfied & content from this time forward. May I feel many more moments of assurance & peace from this time forward. May I feel many more moments of gentleness & tranquility. May I feel fulfilled & connected from this time forward. “When you’re connected to the power of intention, everywhere you go, and everyone you meet, is affected by you and the energy you radiate. As you become the power of intention, you’ll see your dreams being fulfilled almost magically, and you’ll see yourself creating huge ripples in the energy fields of others by your presence and nothing more.” - Wayne W. Dyer, The Power of Intention: Learning to Co-create Your World Your Way May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

What is Climate Change? It refers to the long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may be natural, but since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels (like coal, oil, and gas) which produces heat-trapping gases. The Effects of Climate Change? Hotter temperatures, more severe storms, increased drought, a warming, rising ocean, loss of species, not enough food, more health risks, and poverty and displacement. What are Fossil Fuels? A natural fuel such as coal, gas, or oil (most used) formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms. What is Global Warming? A gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants. How can we reduce our Carbon Footprint? There are simple ways you can start right now to reduce your carbon footprint such as the following. Walk, bike, and use public transportation more, leave the car at home; Eat less beef; Reduce energy usage in your house (e.g. turn up the thermostat on your air-conditioner, turn
down your thermostat on your heating system); If using your car, make sure you do not idle the engine. Use less air-conditioning in your car; Use shades and blinds effectively to keep your house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter; Wash your clothes with cold water; Hang dry your clothes, as much as possible. Use LED lightbulbs; Turn lights off in your house when not in use; Strategically plan your car trips to limit unnecessary travel to stores and other locations; Eliminate single use plastics; Use re-usable coffee mugs, water bottles, and utensils; Say no to additional restaurant take out materials, such as utensils, unnecessary condiments, and menus; Buy re-usable detergent and cleaner bottles (see Blue Land and Public Goods websites for more info); Fix up old furniture, bicycles, and other equipment for reuse; Recycle all materials and compost. (e.g., recycle this paper when you are finished with it); Replace grass lawns to save water, gas and to reduce the negative health effects lawns have on the environment. Instead plant native plants, flowers, and shrubs in the place of grass lawns; Stop mowing your lawn (find alternative more natural garden solutions). Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
The AIDS Epidemic The year 2021 marked the 40th anniversary of the official start of the AIDS epidemic here in the USA. On June 5, 1981, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), a publication from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC; now the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) noted that between October 1980 and May 1981, five young men, “all active homosexuals,” were treated for biopsy-confirmed Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) at three hospitals in Los Angeles. Two had already died. On the basis of those cases, the CDC hypothesized that there was “an
association between some aspect of a homosexual lifestyle or disease acquired through sexual conduct and [PCP] in this population.” This was prior to the discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV. I remember those days quite well. I was an intern at the now defunct St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Greenwich village. The hospital was located in an area with a large gay community. I remember reading that MMWR segment with my fellow interns and residents. It was quite striking for us because St. Vincent’s also had a number of cases of young men who were critical-
ly ill and dying from a type of pneumonia no one had ever seen before, and the only common denominator was that they were all gay. Even our instructors and faculty were stumped. It was a very frustrating time because these young men were very sick and dying and there was nothing we could do about it. By the end of 2019, what had become known as AIDS had taken the lives of more than 700,000 people in the US and 32 million globally. At its peak, AIDS killed 50,000 people in the U.S. in a single year, primarily gay and bisexual men and IV drug users and their sexual partners. When, after 1995, effective anti-retroviral treatment became available, an AIDS diagnosis was no longer a death sentence. By 2018, approximately 1.2 million people in this country were living with a diagnosis of HIV, but progression to full-blown AIDS is now thankfully rare. St. Vincent’s was a wonderful place to learn medicine, but the life of interns and residents back then was very difficult. One of St. Vincent’s buildings was the Seton building, which was built
The Rockaway Times around 1900. It had terra cotta tile floors, 12-foot ceilings, ward rooms that held 10 to 12 beds (for poor and uninsured patients), and no air conditioning. In those days, there were no phlebotomy teams or IV teams. The intern drew everyone’s blood, did EKGs, and was called to insert an IV when the nurse couldn’t do it, which is ironic because the nurse usually had much more experience than an intern fresh out of medical school. Interns and residents stayed at the hospital (on call) every third night and every third weekend. Weekends started Saturday morning and ended Monday night, with 3- or 4-hours sleep, if you were lucky, the whole time. There was no such thing as “postcall.” After the Libby Zion case, the life of house staff got much better, thank goodness. We did what we had to do because there was no other choice, plus we knew it wouldn’t last forever. Sort of a rite of passage, I suppose. William Joseph Fraser 3/29/1950 – 1/7/2022 William Joseph Fraser was born on March 29, 1950. He passed away after a brief illness on January 7, 2022. Bill grew up in Hell’s Kitchen before moving to Beach 93rd Street in Rockaway when he was in the seventh grade. He attended St. Camillus grammar school before going on and graduating from Power Memorial High School. He later joined the New York City Department of Correction in 1978. While with the Department, Bill served in every uniformed rank before being appointed Commissioner by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Under Bill’s leadership, inmate violence reached historic lows and he was honored by Harvard’s Kennedy School of Business. He led the Department through the 9/11 attacks and was proud of the work Corrections did at Ground Zero, the city morgue and Fresh Kills. He was a member of the Emerald Society and was honored as “Irishman of the Year” and served as Grand Marshal of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. He retired from the Department in January 2003 and went on to have a second career as Warden of Monmouth County, New Jersey. He was grateful for the cherished friendships he found over the years. In 2011, he retired to become a Pop Pop to his four adoring grandchildren and play golf with his buddies in the Rockaway Sandtraps. He was a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales. Bill is survived by his beloved wife of forty-seven and a half years, Anne (nee Carroll), his daughters, Kristin (Gus) and Casey (Mike), his beloved grandchildren Billy, Kevin, Mikey and Vivianne, his sisters and their spouses, Annemarie (Steve), Cecilia (Jack), Theresa (Joe) and Ellen (Ron), his in-laws, cousins, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Theresa. A funeral was held on January 12 at St. Francis de Sales. He was interred at St. John’s Cemetery in Middle Village. The family of William J. Fraser would like to thank everyone for their love and support- it meant the world to us. Human Trafficking Awareness Month
By Theresa M Racine
(Editor’s note: Warning—the following article may be graphic or triggering.) Human Trafficking has been around for a very long time, beginning in the 1400s, starting with European slave trading. Human trafficking is now considered modern day slavery.
The numbers of those being trafficked today is even greater than the Atlantic Slave Trade. This relatively hidden reality needs to have more exposure. Every January, we recognize and spread awareness of the many boys, girls and women subjected to horrible life situations through Human Trafficking. Kids and women are forced

to have sex with up to thirty men a day, with some even being placed in cages so they don’t escape. The daughter of one mom I know was raped by up to 20 men at one time. The pimp can be anybody—a friend, a boyfriend, etc. I have worked with a few women who were trafficked by their own husbands. Grooming begins with trust. Then the victim feels she or he has nowhere else to go. They’re faced with coercion, threats and beatings daily. They’re made numb with drugs and alcohol so that they become addicted. Human Trafficking Awareness Day is January 11th. People are asked to wear the color blue on that day. Wearing blue helps raise awareness. The blue heart represents the sadness of those who are trafficked. While reminding us of the cold-heartedness of those who buy and sell. The other day I attended a rally regarding a very high-profile trafficking case—Ghislaine Maxwell. She is looking at a very long time in prison
after being convicted on four counts. But while that case was going on, so many other cases were being heard. This is happening right in our own backyard. The supply and demand is everywhere. Many young women are going missing. They look for young homeless addicts, but the truth is no one is safe from a human trafficker. If you see something, say something. If you're turning a blind eye, you are part of the problem. I know of two girls missing right now in Queens. Share flyers like the one here. Occasionally share the 24/7 national human trafficking hotline (1-888-373-7888) on social media. Take classes to become educated on what to look for. Become part of the bigger picture by working with groups that do this type of work. I, myself, have had events where people who have been trafficked speak on their own experience. Feel free to reach out to me if you like to be a part of the solution xtrememeasure.org.

The Art Of Getting Out There Dear Enchantress, I have always been told I take amazing pictures, or photographs, whatever. I have millions of pictures, and hard drives and I don't know what to do with them. I have so many that I have stopped taking pictures because I keep running out of room on my phone and my computer. It's like I'm stuck, and I don't know what's next? I don't want to call myself a photographer. I never had any schooling on any art. I'm an office worker. But ever since I was a little kid, I have loved camer-

as. Anyway, if you have any advice or ideas of what I could do next, that would be great. Dear Phyllis The Photographer, You take photographs, therefore you are a photographer! Don't question it. And the next time someone asks; "Are you a photographer?" say YES! The next time someone says, "How are you?" reply: Good, I've been busy taking photographs. Affirm who you are and what you do any chance you get. You don't need to be educated or graduated in photography to be a photographer.
Next, is there a theme or a topic you enjoy taking photos of the most? For example, nature would be too general, but sunsets, waves, seagulls, shells would be specific. People would be general; elderly people's faces, children, or children's faces, etc. Keep all the photos you have, now, see if you can choose a theme to capture for 30 days, you will then have a collection. Some ideas of what you can do next; these ideas range from easy and doable right this moment to bigger and having more steps and more visibility. For right now, you can start an Instagram page just for your photography or change the one you already may have to "PHOTOGRAPHER," as your title, and include all the theme or topic images that you've chosen. The next step is to consider if you can print five or six images. Decide if they will be black or white, and go to coffee shops, bakeries and any other small business and see if they are looking to hang a collection of photographs. You can then
show them your Instagram and see if it's a good fit. This can be a place where you spend some money, you'll need to print them and frame them. The great news is, you can also title them and put a price on them! Of course, ask the store owner about this process! The point it NOT to sell them, but to have the courage to have them up in the world to be seen! Some other creative ideas: you can make them into greeting cards, post cards, a calendar etc. There are many print-to-order websites to have them listed for sale, or you can print some and mail them to family and friends. Lastly, if you are a social being, you can plan on having vendor space and have your art on display for sale, again it's not about the sale, more about having the courage to have them displayed and talk about them! There are many more ways but start here! Good Luck! If you have a question for the Enchantress, email here at love@enchantedembodiment. com

Wrestle Talk POTENTIAL WWE BUYERS By Eric Jayden
Last week’s column drew a lot attention and I have received a lot of emails from our readers about the WWE Talent Releases and what would be the potential future of the WWE. One main question was who would buy the WWE, so let's take this time to dive in and look at who can be a potential buyer. All Elite Wrestling (AEW) now, this name is brought up a lot. Can AEW buy the WWE? I say, yes, they can, but will they? Well in my opinion, the owners of AEW, the Khan Family have already pumped a lot of money into creating and producing AEW. At this point, I do not see them spending billions to purchase the WWE when they can continue to grow their own product which has seen a lot of success. Peacock/NBC - now, this
is the top company I predict that could and would buy the WWE. They have shown interest in purchasing the company and they have the capital to do it. Also, they already have WWE Programming as part of their Network Subscription, so owning the WWE would only be potentially profitable for them but I say potentially because they are a TV Network Production Company specializing in TV shows, dramas and movies. They do not, in my book, have the experience to run a Professional Wrestling Company and as history has
shown us in the past, when TV executives were placed in positions to run a Major Wrestling Company, it didn't always work out. If Peacock/NBC did purchase the WWE, it would be wise to keep and hire people experienced in producing wrestling content. Disney - This company next to Peacock/NBC is the only other company I see that has the capital to buy the WWE but they are in the same boat as Peacock with not having the experience in running a Professional Wrestling Company. Now, Disney would benefit from purchasing the WWE as they have their own network where WWE programming can be seen by millions of Disney
Plus subscribers. Now, Disney has always been traditionally a children's content producer but throughout the years have grown their product to be viewed by more mature audiences. My question would be, if Disney bought the WWE, would they keep the current way wrestling is produced or would they change it to meet a certain demographic...the last thing I want to see is Mickey Mouse become the WWE World Champion! In the end, time will tell and we could possibly be seeing a totally new WWE or we can be seeing the same old boring WWE programming that is on now. Thank you to Able Villamar, co-owner of A Shot Of Wrestling Podcast, for inspiring this column. Please send your questions into eavil183@yahoo.com and have a great weekend!
