Locals Earn Major Win in Shelter Battle By Katie McFadden
Those from Rockaway Solutions Not Shelters (RSNS) have proven that they’re not standing down in the shelter fight. On Friday, January 17, the organization had a major win in the shelter battle, when a New York State Supreme Court justice decided to issue a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the shelter. “It’s as if it’s frozen in time,” Torey Schnupp, lead activist behind RSNS said, recalling the words of the judge after the TRO was issued. The TRO means no one is supposed to enter the building for any reason, effectively putting all work on halt and preventing anyone from moving in to the building at 226 Beach 101st Street. "The ruling is significant," Schnupp said. "While we want to see the male homeless population helped back to their feet, we have limitations as a peninsula that is already in-

undated with people in need and still recovering from Hurricane Sandy." At Friday’s hearing at the Queens Supreme Court, attorney Mike Scala faced off with New York City lawyers representing the Department of Homeless Services (DHS).
Scala raised numerous legal issues during the hearing, including that DHS' environmental review was improper, the shelter would constitute a residence for the mentally disabled in violation of state law and there was evidence of financial impropriety with the not-for-profit service provider, Black Veterans for Social Justice. Opposing counsel contended there was no imminent harm, claiming the shelter would not open until February—but the judge was unpersuaded by their defense. After the decision on Friday morning, Scala and Schnupp, along with a group of officers from the 100th Precinct, went to the proposed shelter to present the court order to workers at the building. The workers were then given the opportunity to enter the building to grab what they needed, before having to shut down all operations and vacate the premises. The TRO will last at least until Monday, January 27, when
Scala and Schnupp will once again face off with representatives from DHS for another hearing. While just a temporary measure, Scala says it carries a heavy message. "This win is meaningful for the Rockaway community," Scala said. "It means we've established a likelihood that the city is breaking the law. It's only the first step in the case, but it's certainly one in the right direction. Residents have felt helpless throughout the whole process and this is a measure of vindication." However, it wasn’t long before the court order was allegedly violated. According to Schnupp, eagle-eyed neighbors noticed someone enter the building on Monday, January 20. Schnupp responded to the building as 911 was called. The foreman for the project and another man were on site. As police were informed this is a civil matter, there was al-

BOYLEING POINTS
Whistling Dixie If you missed the last couple of weeks of Boyleing Points, I’m on some 500+-mile bike odyssey. You can get up to date at Rockawaytimes.com or on The Rockaway Times YouTube channel. Anyway, you think you had it tough with 24-degree weather? Add nine to that number and that’s how much I paid for the Dixie Motel where Georgia and Florida are the same thing. And I overpaid. The shower was like the visiting team’s locker room in a public school. If you’ve never seen one, your imagination should do. I thought the bed spread had hair on it but, thankfully, it was only the threads coming apart. I dumped the clothes out of my laundry bag and slid my legs in for extra protection through the night. A tube TV, the kind you put at the sidewalk that no one picks up, was the entertainment option. Well, it was an option until I turned it on. I got some fuzzy picture like I was watching wrestling on a UHF antenna. The internet was in and out, as were some of the hotel guests. I slept with one eye open, two legs in a laundry bag, and three baseball bats. Well, the first two are true. I didn’t have baseball bats handy but I did wedge my bike against the door. No, I did not look around to see if you could a put quarter in to make the bed vibrate. I was too distracted by the guy I could hear through the wall. I think he was trying to cough up a carton of Lucky Strikes. The night dragged on and we skedaddled at first morning light. We, as in Rick Horan (last seen under a tarp by the side of the road), and me. The next
stop, 50 miles ahead, was the Budget Inn in Lawtey, Florida. Lawtey, Lawtey, Lawtey, population 730. The Budget Inn, run by a husband and wife originally from Jackson Heights, was a big step up in class as it should have been. I mean $49 a night got me a working TV and decent internet. Oh, that reminds me. We stayed in Eulonia, Georgia at the Country Inn motel and the owner there was an Indian guy who used to drive a yellow taxi in New York and had lived in South Ozone Park. The guy was 83 and was doing this motel thing “to keep busy.” In Eulonia. Through Georgia we were able to find quiet backroads full of interesting places, like the Smallest Church in America. Along the way, the bike GPS sent us down long dirt roads which were kind of spooky. We didn’t know if good ol’ boys in pick-up trucks would try and have fun with us. We had to film a couple of basketball courts I found in tucked away places. And there was a great looking building next to an antique shop that was just a façade. The inside of the building was overgrown with weeds. And see the accompanying photo of Rick. He spotted these buried cars on a backroad in Nowhere, Georgia. In Florida, the only place to get something to eat in Lawtey was a Subway sandwich place which, surprisingly, wasn’t run by a guy from Queens. Our next stop was Gainesville, a mere 45 miles. I think we’d done about 400 miles by this point. I may butcher the exact wording, but I think it was author Bill Bryson who said about hiking the Appalachian Trail, the first
10 miles are wonderful and how you can see doing this forever. The next 10 miles you start asking yourself, didn’t I see that already? And the next 10 after that, you’re asking yourself if you’re out of your mind, for doing this hellish thing. It’s not that much different on a bike, especially when your butt starts complaining about mile 30 into a 50-mile ride. The ride to Gainesville was along a highway with trucks and cars whizzing past at 65 and 70.
Page 5 We were biking on a wide shoulder so we felt safe enough. Best thing, though, was a tail wind, which pushed us along so that for the entire ride I was thinking I could do this forever. Gainesville is home to the University of Florida, a large and pretty campus. The place was buzzing with students and activity and after being in downtown Lawtey, population 730, it was a good change of pace. Oh, and the Comfort Inn we stayed at: an absolute palace.

But Schnupp says with evidence in hand to present to the judge at the upcoming hearing on Monday, showing that the court order was violated, the judge may not take it lightly. “Hopefully the judge will decide to extend it because of a blatant disregard for the TRO,” Schnupp said, adding that neighbors are continuing to stay vigilant to see if anyone else enters the building this week. According to Schnupp, DHS had intended to open the shelter sometime between February 1 and 15, but with the TRO in place and no one legally permitted to enter the building, that potential opening date is at the very least, pushed further back. But RSNS’ fight isn’t over yet. With this being the first of many steps RSNS has planned to fight the shelter, now is an important time to gain com-

"The city needs to reevaluate its plan to move forward with more shelters and start offering real solutions, starting with in-patient mental health services and substance abuse rehabilitation," concluded Schnupp. "Men in need don't need to be placed on cots amidst the highest unemployment rate in Queens, poor public transit and 4,000 students a block away." Locals Impacted by House Fires Last weekend, several neighbors were impacted by house fires. Now the community is rallying to help. At around 1:30 a.m. on Friday, January 17, the FDNY responded to a 2nd alarm fire at 132-14 Cronston Ave. Despite cold temperatures and high winds, the FDNY was able to keep the fire from spreading and had it under control by 3:30 a.m. All of those within the home made it out safely but were left with nothing but their clothes on their backs. To help them, the Graybeards are holding a gift card collection so the residents can buy what they need. All gift cards can be dropped off at 129-04 Newport Ave. A neighbor has also started a GoFundMe for the victims. To donate, head to www.gofundme.com/f/devet-fire-victims Then on Saturday, January 18, around 9:38 p.m., FDNY responded to another fire in the
basement of a home located at 414 Beach 118th Street. No one is believed to be in the home at the time, and FDNY had the fire under control by 9:56 p.m. However, the homeowner lost everything. We have newspaper delivery challenges all the time. Of course, we’re happy we can get The Rockaway Times delivered to you in the first place, but we often get calls and emails about missed deliveries or too few papers (hello, Breezy Point). It’s frustrating for all of us! The company we use delivers circulars and other publications in the metro area. So, that explains a mix-up last week and it was a beaut. Apparently, they mixed up some bags and didn’t realize they were delivering Gay City News instead of The Rockaway Times to some households. Sometimes, you just have to laugh. ***** Lime Bikes are leaving Rockaway, first reported in The Wave. And the company is leaving a bunch of other cities. The green bikes that were much loved and somewhat loathed won’t be available as the company announced that it is focusing on e-scooters (in other markets). Boston, Seattle, Charlotte and San Diego are just a few of the places Lime is leaving. We’ll see if another dockless bike-sharing company will take its place.

Graybeards to Honor Bill Dunn, Gail Allen at 19th Annual Dinner Dance By Katie McFadden
It’s that time of year again. After a successful year of helping neighbors in the community, the Graybeards will be celebrating those accomplishments, while fundraising to continue their efforts in the year ahead at the 19th Annual Graybeards Dinner Dance. On Saturday, January 25, more than 300 people will gather at El Caribe in Mill Basin for the annual event, which serves as the Graybeards’ main fundraiser for the year. Between ticket sales, raffles and a major 50/50, the event raises funds to help the Graybeards, a nonprofit organization of community-minded men, continue their mission. The event also serves as an opportunity to recognize some community members or groups that have gone above and beyond. This year’s honorees—William Dunn and
Gail Allen— exemplify all that the Graybeards strive to achieve, by giving back to their c o m mu n i ty. Bill Dunn This year’s Don “DH� Hart Memorial Award will be given to William “Bill� Dunn. Each year, the Graybeards give out this award in memory of a fellow Graybeard, Don Hart, who was one to always rise to a challenge, no matter how big or small. From assisting those in Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina, to volunteering for spring spruce ups and other projects, Hart was always at the ready with his tool bag in hand. Hart passed away in 2008 and the award is given in his name, to a special community member that also
rises to meet any challenge. Bill Dunn was selected as this year’s Don Hart award recipient for a number of reasons. The local resident and Graybeard has not only worked a more than 31-year career with New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development, helping find some of New York’s neediest safe and affordable housing—he also volunteers his time in the community. He has been very active in the local CYO program. Having been involved with CYO sports since the 1980s, Dunn has served as a basketball and soccer coach, and has been the Parish Athletic Representative at St. Francis de Sales since 2009. As a mentor and role model to local youth, Dunn has always stepped up to the plate for the community. This year’s Tom Ryan Me-

GRAYBEARDS Continued from Page 12 parish. This award was named in Tom Ryan’s honor after he passed in 2017 and is usually given to a local organization that strives to better the community. This year, that award goes to Gail Allen on behalf of the work of the Richie Allen Foundation. Gail Allen is the mother of the late Richie Allen, a firefighter who made the supreme sacrifice at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. In 2004, the Allen family began the Richie Allen Memorial Surf Classic to remember Richie through his biggest passion—surfing, and giving kids an opportunity to compete in a local surf contest. Money raised from the event has allowed the family to pay it forward by providing financial support to neighbors going through a hardship. Another highlight of Saturday’s event will be the presentation of a substantial check to a wounded warrior. Over the holidays, Graybeard
Eugene Brennan spearheaded the Stockings for a Cause event, raising money for Queens resident, Sergeant Kristian Cedeno, who was seriously injured during his second tour in Afghanistan. The money raised from this successful effort will officially be presented to Cedeno at the dinner dance. The fun will kick off at 6:30 p.m. with a cocktail hour, followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. at El Caribe (5495 Strickland Ave, Brooklyn). There will be an open bar for five hours, tunes to dance to by DJs@Work, plus plenty of fun throughout the night. Raffle and 50/50 tickets will be sold throughout the event by “The "Rafflettes," a group of young women who volunteer their time to make sure all of the raffles run smoothly. Raffle prizes are made possible through the support of local businesses who support the event through journal ads. If interested in attending, reservations are required. As the Graybeards’ biggest fundraiser, the dinner dance helps support the Graybeards’ efforts throughout the year, and their efforts are aplenty. Last year, 2019, was a big one for the Graybeards, with new president, Tom Morgan, becoming the third president to oversee the organization in its almost 19 years of operation. “It’s been very rewarding and very busy,” Morgan said of his new role. “It’s also an honor to be associated with such a fine group of men.” With Morgan at the helm, in 2019, the Graybeards continued their hard work, serving the community. Quarterly newsletters sent to members to keep them in the loop, sum up some of the organization’s accomplishments. From hosting events like the Harlem Magic Master Basketball game and kids’ shootout, the Family Fun Run, annual blood drives, food drives and more, the
Graybeards have kept busy in 2019. They also put the money raised towards some great causes to assist neighbors with funeral expenses, cancer treatments, medical bills, house repairs, helping those whose homes were impacted by fires, the Hope for the Warriors breakfast, AmpSurf programs, scholarships, sending soldiers and their families on trips to Disney, and even helping to install a handicapped ramp on the home of a Breezy Point resident in need. “Most of the time, we are helping out complete strangers that can be from Breezy Point to Far Rockaway to Broad Channel and it’s a very humbling experience when you see the gratitude expressed when we are able to provide the assistance,” Morgan said. P.S. 253 Makes MLK Day ‘A Day On, Not a Day Off ’ By Kami-Leigh Agard
This past Monday, Far Rockaway Kappa VI High School student, Jenisse Garcia, chose to spend her break from school on Martin Luther King Jr. Day by bringing her band of friends to her old stomping grounds, P.S. 253, to make the holiday a “day on,” rather than a “day off ” by participating in the school’s Second Annual Day of Service. While Garcia and her friends were creating works of art with positive messages like “You Got This,” NY Cares volunteer, Jeffrey Pagliaro, a civil engineer hailing from Manhattan, was busy at work with his own crew creating “Welcome Packages” for incoming students now entering schools at various times throughout the academic year. The school’s cafeteria was buzzing with activity as scores of volunteers of all ages were at various stations creating pillows for transient students, care packages with hygiene supplies for the
homeless, writing down their dreams, and creating inspirational artwork for senior citizens. Regardless of their age or what project they were engaged in, if you asked a volunteer why
they were here, the answer was a resounding, “To give back, like M.L.K. did.” The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday celebrated on Jan. 20, 2020, marked the 25th anniversary of the day of service that celebrates the civil rights leader’s life and legacy. Observed each year on the third Monday in January as “a day on, not a day off,” MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Amer-
icans to volunteer to improve their communities. When asked what inspired the school’s annual event, Principal Phoebe Robinson said, “This is an effort that we’ve coordinated to bring the community out, so we can emphasize the true essence of what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. worked for in terms of service. At P.S. 253, we are really focused on building civic engagement and empowering our students to understand that their voices have tremendous power. Their actions, as small as they are, can reach the lives of so many, and this is an initiative that allows us to do just that. Our social worker, Teneisha Bailey, has led the effort to work closely with NY Cares for the last two years to establish a solid group of volunteers. We have about 15 to 20 volunteers from NY Cares. Overall, the most symbolic takeaway is that we want our children in the community to know that we believe in the impact of Continued on page 18

Bye Bye Birdie, Jr. Says Hello to the RTC Stage By Marina Cregan
The Rockaway Theater Company (RTC) opened its first show for the 2020 season on Friday, January 17, with a production performed by their very own Young People’s Theatre Workshop. After five months of extensive rehearsals and preparation, the children performed the Young Performer’s Edition of “Bye Bye Birdie Jr.” this past weekend. Under the direction of John Gilleece, Peggy Page Press, Jodee Timpone, Richard Louis-Pierre, and Gabrielle Mangano, the production proved to be a success, highlighting not only all of the children’s talents, but their knowledge of what it takes to put on a musical production. The musical, “Bye Bye Birdie,” written by Michael Stewart, is based on the famous artist, Elvis Presley, and how his career was put on hold due to being drafted into the Army in 1957. The character, Conrad Birdie, represents Presley, and is expected to perform his hit song, “One Last Kiss,” on the famous Ed Sullivan Show before going into the Army. At the end of the performance, Birdie is supposed to kiss one lucky girl, Kim MacAfee, from the small town of Sweet Apple,

the Jr. version, which was used by the RTC workshop. However, as an audience member, you cannot tell by the level of talent these children possess! The musical opened with members of the “Conrad Birdie Fan Club” entering through the back of the theater, singing, “We Love You Conrad,” up and down the aisles. Right from the start, the actors got the audience’s attention by interacting with them, transforming the theater back in time to the 1950s in Sweet Apple. Dressed in big, colorful swing skirts, the Fan Club set the scene by fully portraying typical teenage girls from the time period. After the girls set the theme of the show, Thomas Daudelin and Anisa Utilla, kept the audience’s attention with their hilarious portrayal of the characters, Albert Peterson and Rosie Alvarez. er,” the audience was in awe of her talent. Utilla’s strong voice captivated the entire theater. As the show continued, the level of talent possessed by the entire cast, continued to impress. The teen ensemble’s performance of “The Telephone Hour,” was absolutely outstanding, highlighting the numerous different harmonies all sung on perfect pitch. Being
with her strong vocals, certainly mirrored that of Broadway’s, Ann-Margaret Olsson, who played this role. As for Walker, his portrayal of Conrad Birdie had the audience laughing every time he stepped foot on the stage. Dressed in a ‘50s style leather jacket, Walker channeled his inner Elvis and rock star persona, by not only delivering hilarious lines, but also by his impressive dance skills. The most iconic scene of the musical was by far the Ed Sullivan Show, which makes you feel like you’re a part of the legendary program. Mimicking the 1950s style TV camera, the RTC brings a camera on stage to actually “film” the scene right in front of the audience. able to stay on pitch while the person next to you sings in a completely different key can be very tricky, especially for a children’s workshop. However, the ensemble made this practice of harmonies seem effortless, bringing sweet music to the audience’s ears. All of the group numbers performed by the teen ensemble highlighted their impeccable singing and dancing abilities. Choreographer, Gabrielle Mangano, once again created amazing dance numbers that showcased the talents of the cast. While the entire cast clearly possessed outstanding performing arts skills, Kristen McQuaid and James Walker’s portrayals of the main characters, Kim MacAfee and Conrad Birdie, truly stood out. McQuaid’s sweet personality, combined

This was a great addition to the scene, because as the camera zoomed in on the actors’ faces, the audience was able to fully grasp their expressions. Walker’s expressions as shown through the black-and-white TV screens really brought the scene together. “Bye Bye Birdie Jr.’s” opening weekend was a hit, and it isn’t over. This is what we want to communicate to our children and the people that we serve here in Far Rockaway, and other parts of Queens.” For example, with the pillow-making project, which the school started last year, gifts brightly decorated pillows to transitional centers, where children receive pillows and keep with them throughout their living transitions as a keepsake. “P.S. 253 serves the transient community, meaning children who are continually moving from shelter to shelter, and have to transfer to different schools. One shelter maybe in Far Rockaway and another shelter maybe in the Bronx, so they may have to transfer schools; or they may be “doubled-up,” which in NYC is considered shelter status, where a family may live in an apartment with two other families. So transient for these children is consistent moving.
As far as this project goes, we led a drive in the school, where parents, teachers and community members brought in items to donate towards the care packages, and gifting these pillows to transient status children, who hold on to them as a keepsake and a reminder that someone cares, wherever they go,” Robinson said. Other examples were the art project, which was focused on warming the hearts of senior citizens at the home adjacent to the school building; and the dream project, where volunteers were all given cards and asked to write down— “What’s your dream for your community?” “What’s your dream for yourself?” Robinson said, “The purpose of the dream project was to create a sense of self-consciousness and awareness that like Dr. King, we do have dreams as well, and there are opportunities for us to allow those dreams to come to fruition. It’s all about spending time thinking about it, and knowing you are a part of what’s going to make your dreams happen.
“What led us as a school to start this day of service with all these activities is our faith in the power that individuals have to make a difference and to create change. The questions that arose were 'How?' and ‘Where are the opportunities?’ And we saw MLK Day as a gift to initiate the work, and the ideas just kept flowing. We want to keep the spark and fire burning even in a mode of inquiry, where our students are asking questions

Parents—Late In Registering Your Child For School? DON’T STRESS! HERE’S THE ABCs ON WHAT TO DO! By Kami-Leigh Agard
For many families, sending their child off to kindergarten or transitioning to middle and high school are all major milestones. However, being late in registering your child not only casts a cloud on what could be a joyous time laying out the yellow brick road to a promising future but could even slap parents with a fine or jail time if they do not send their children to school. However, hiccups do happen, and The Rockaway Times, after listening to bewildered parents, reached out to the NYC Department of Education (DOE) for the 411 on how to recoup precious time in getting your child registered for school. NYC DOE public schools lo-
cated on the Rockaway peninsula and Broad Channel are all zoned in Community School District 27. According to DOE press officer Katie O’Hanlon, “The kindergarten application deadline was just extended to January 26, 2020, and the middle and high school application deadline was extended from December 2, 2019 to December 6, 2019 to give families more time to apply. Families who did not submit their application by the deadline for any reason, can contact the DOE, and we will work with them to ensure they have a school placement. If a parent and their child is interested in a particular school, the school will send you directly to the DOE to work on the process. The department also has translators who can work
with families with language barriers. “All families, including English as a Second Language and undocumented students, are guaranteed placement in elementary, middle and high school, even if they miss the deadline. Families who do not apply by the kindergarten deadline can add themselves to waitlists online using the MySchools portal (www.myschools.nyc/en/schools/) or in-person by visiting a Family Welcome Center. Families who have not applied by the middle and high school deadline, can add themselves to waitlists after offer letters go out in March, also using the MySchools portal, or in-person by visiting a Family Welcome Center. MySchools is available in 10 differ-
ent languages and translation and interpretation services are available at Family Welcome Centers (FWC).” Note that if you’re registering your child in a zoned school, you have to show: that you live and intend to remain in the school district. Also, you have to show your child’s age. Here are your rights as a parent: Your child must be enrolled within one day of your request. Children and youth can get a free public education, even if they are undocumented or are not citizens. There are many different ways to show residency. Schools must give you choices and cannot only ask for a lease or a deed. (If the school district decides your child can’t go to school in the district because he or she is not a resident, the district must give you a letter within two business days explaining its decision and how to appeal the decision). Your child can be enrolled in school even if you don’t have his or her birth certificate. Also, youth may enroll in school under certain circumstances, even if they are not living with their parents. Children and youth in temporary housing, such as living in a shelter or sharing the home of a relative or a friend because they lost their home or were evicted, can enroll in school without the documents normally needed to enroll.

Yeast Rising Yeasts, aka fungi, can infect people, and one of the common types of yeast is called Candida. This species of yeast causes mostly skin infections, especially in moist areas of the body where there is skinto-skin contact, like the armpits and groin. These skin infections are more common in those with impaired immune systems, for example diabetics, but can usually be successfully treated with topical creams and lotions. Rarely, yeasts may cause systemic (bloodstream) infections in severely ill, hospitalized patients. These infections are much more resistant to treatment and often may
cause septic shock and death. Many genetically unrelated forms of yeasts emerge worldwide for reasons that are as yet unknown. It is thought that the use of antifungal medications in people and animals or fungicides in agriculture may play a role in the emergence of new species of yeasts and fungi. In 2009, a new yeast species called Candida auris (C auris) was discovered. This yeast has caused outbreaks of infection in hospitals and nursing homes. Unlike other yeasts that originate in human bodies and are passed from person to person, C auris can be

acquired from the healthcare environment and spread from patient to patient. It can cause serious infections of the bloodstream, gut, wounds, and other sites. It is resistant to all current antifungal drugs and does not usually respond to treatment; death rates from this infection can reach 60%. Some patients may have C auris on their skin or in their rectum, wounds, or mouth, but they feel well and have no symptoms of infection. This is called asymptomatic colonization and treatment with antifungals will not eliminate it. Those who get C auris infections are usually very sick, have many illnesses, and tend to remain in healthcare facilities for a long time. They have impaired immunity and often have feeding tubes, catheters, or intravenous lines. With rare exceptions, healthy people do not become colonized or infected with C auris, therefore routine screening of contacts of patients with it is usually not performed. Detection of C auris is difficult in most hospi-
tals so, if infection with C auris is suspected, the sample must be sent out to a specialty lab. When being admitted to a hospital or healthcare facility, patients (or their families) should alert physicians if they have been diagnosed with a C auris infection or stayed at a facility where it was present. If there is concern that a patient has been exposed to C auris, they must be placed in isolation as a precaution until the diagnosis has been confirmed. Isolation for C auris requires placing patients in private rooms or placing patients diagnosed with it together. All staff must use gowns and gloves, and frequent hand washing is imperative. The room must be cleaned frequently with special disinfectants. Cultures of C auris may grow for up to three months after it is first detected. Grow Your Gray Matter Being in a state of good health, mental clarity and a peaceful heart is a good start for defining a good life. Living is complicated, could be stressful, and this basic state of being can easily be uprooted to a regular state of chaos. That is, if we let everything take over and if we let our minds think whatever it wants to and if we act on all of that. The alternative is to practice mindful living, which could mean a whole lot of things to different people. This week, a friend shared this article which is backup in the form of a scientific study: “Science
Review Confirms Yoga Benefits Your Brain,” (fitness.mercola. com). The author reports studies that show better brain health as a result of not only yoga poses but breath practice (pranayama) and meditation. “...Yoga—which is suitable for most people, regardless of age or fitness level—has been shown to support healthy brain function and stave off neurological decline. Through modern imaging technology, researchers have been able to objectively confirm that yoga impacts the brain in beneficial ways… Reg-
ular yoga practice has also been shown to lower stress, reduce body image dissatisfaction and anxiety, and much more. Yoga practitioners have thicker vortexes and greater gray matter volume and density in several brain regions… It appears to be the unique combination of physical movement, breath work and meditation that confers these beneficial brain benefits.” Mindful breath practice can be incorporated into any part of our days. While specific breath practices are usually part of a yoga class, taking mindful breathing off the yoga mat and into your day will add to the benefits above and also bring you to a calm state. “Conscious breathing,” as described by Thich Nhat Hanh, is a centering, focused breath practice that can be done anytime, anywhere. “Breathing in, I know I am breathing in; breathing out, I know I am breathing out.” By acknowledging the “knowing,” or the control of the mind over the breath, the body and mind align, which has an inner effect. After a while, as he says, you can come to just saying to yourself “In” on the
Page 27 in breath, and “Out” on the out breath. I do really like, however, to repeat the whole phrase. Expanding this “conscious breathing” to a meditation practice, further helps to grow our gray matter! Finding your “meditation” is a process, one that most likely will take time. I can share that a shift in inner energy definitely occurs by bringing this into your life. I can describe what that is for me, but it is a unique experience. Using the conscious breath practice is a great way of beginning to meditate or practice one-pointed concentration. The focus on the breath helps to stop the thinking, even though thoughts may be pinging all the while. Be comfortable in your seat, whether it be on a cushion or blanket on your mat, or on a chair with feet planted on the floor. And, turn the corners of your mouth upward in a gentle smile. “Our smile affirms our awareness and determination to live in peace and joy.” - Thich Nhat Hanh May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Although there are photos from space that seem to show the Great Wall and old school books perpetuate the myth, Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei disputed that. In fact, about the only man-made structures that can be seen from space are the Egyptian pyramids...if you squint and look hard enough. The beginnings of China opening its door to the Western world came about during the
1971 World Table Tennis Tournament in Japan. A 19-year-old Glen Cowan, member of the U.S. team, jumped onto a bus carrying the Chinese players and the dialogue began. Cowan exchanged souvenirs with Zhuang Zedong, China’s best player. The closed country’s chairman, Mao Zedong, then invited the Americans to an all-expense paid visit to China. Nixon, the politician that he was, happily took credit for opening the door. But beware, China may seem to be a free and open country, but it is very tightly controlled from its press to its government. If you have a computer with you, don’t expect to be able to access Google or some other web services. They are totally blocked in the People's Republic of China (PRC). One way to see as much as possible of the country on a two-week tour is through an American company that has ties to travel packagers in China.

While there are companies that will take care of it for you at a hefty fee, if you have the time, read the detailed instructions on the form (available online), and do it yourself. They nit-pick the details, so you must be exact or you can come back several times before being approved. Also, your passport must be valid for a minimum of six months from your date of arrival. Tiananmen Square is arguably the heart of Beijing. It’s a huge open area that can hold literally tens of thousands of people and is often used for parades and to impress visiting dignitaries. In June of 1984, nearly one million students began protesting for a more open and free government. The Communists sent in troops and
opened fire on the demonstrators, killing an undetermined number. The most poignant image that came out of this was that of a student staring down a tank as it rolled toward him. He stopped the tank, but according to some Chinese, he simply disappeared without a trace after the demonstration. It is difficult for a Westerner to stand in the Square and not have that picture in mind. Overlooking the Square is a huge portrait of Mao seemingly keeping an eye on all those in attendance. Nearby is the entrance to the “Forbidden
City,” once the home of China’s emperors. Take the time to visit there. While you may not be able to see the Great Wall from space, it is an amazing thing to behold in person. In the middle of the entry square before the first steps is a soldier on a platform watching every move of every person. These young soldiers stand ramrod straight for their entire shift, only their eyes darting around and are stationed at virtually all tourist destinations. The Terracotta Army in Xi’an is best seen from close up. To
Page 29 see the thousands of reconstructed soldiers standing in ranks, interspersed by horses and, in some cases wagons, will remain with most visitors long after their return home. The army was crafted some 2,000 years ago to guard China’s first emperor, Ying Zheng, first ruler of the Qin (pronounced “Chin”) Dynasty. To date, some 8,000 have been excavated. More are constantly being worked on. When they were found by farmers, all had not only been buried under thousands of years of dust and earth, but they had been smashed to bits. The Chinese government, with full respect and reverence, developed special glue and began painstakingly putting each one back together, much like a gigantic jigsaw puzzle. The army is today protected from the elements by a giant hangar-like room. Walk to the back and you can see students and archeologists piecing together more soldiers. Nearby is the inevitable souvenir shop. Bring home miniature soldiers for an experience that will be remembered for a lifetime.

On The Move Dear Enchantress, So, I'm thinking about relocating to a city, which is definitely more affordable. Although I usually don’t have trouble meeting new people, the vibe is more laid back, and everything moves at a slower pace. How can I be sure that is something I truly want to consider? Thank you in advance! Dear Moving Mary, What a simple and nice question that can also feel big and heavy. Moving to cities is a tremendous decision to make. Rockaway is the perfect place for many because of its small nature. NYC is one of the most
expensive cities in the world. I'm not sure where you live, but here are some pointers to figure out if a town is right for you. We are lucky to have the internet and do proper research before a big move. Here are some simple sites and suggestions to use in preparation for a new town. First, write out your important values. It sounds like cost and community are important to you. What are three more? Is diversity important? Cultural events? Near nature, a park or ocean? Write out up to 10 dream must-haves for you to live near, and then choose five that are non-negotiable.

Then you can look at a map, and with pure fun, see where you are genuinely drawn to, it might be the name of a town, it might be as whimsical as it reminds you of a story you read as a child, etc. Then go on meetup.com and see what current meetups go on consistently that you could find your tribe at. Also, find the biggest groups on Facebook for that area, and start asking questions. Don't hold back. Then begin witnessing and noticing how people respond to your outreach. I always love advising to go to the library and take out books on the city/town. The books can be fiction or non-fiction. Then pay attention to how you feel when you read about it. You cannot mess up where you live, when you do your prep work and pay attention to your feelings. You may still notice fears or self-doubt, and that's why it's important to do the research and keep checking in on how you feel while researching. Pay attention to
physical sensations, as well as thoughts and stories. Lastly, if you can, go take a weekend or a week trip to the new city of your choice! Narrow it down to three cities and take a good neutral friend with you or go alone. Get to the coffee shop, the library and maybe a bar/restaurant. Again, see how you feel, and talk to people. The security of NY consumers’ private information is about to get a boost. The recently passed SHIELD Act (Stop Hacks and Improve Electronic Data Security) has expanded the scope of protection required of persons or businesses handling NY consumers’ data. Starting in late March of 2020, NYS will require companies in all sectors to exercise data security to secure private information of NY consumers. Effective March 21, NY will require persons or businesses that own or license private information about individuals to develop, implement, and maintain a data security program with “reasonable safeguards� designed to protect the information. An example of the type of information required to be protected is an individual’s name along with a driver’s license number. The reasonable safeguards requirement will typically be

The new law’s requirements apply to any person or entity regardless of size, including small businesses (as defined in the law). Compliance requirements are more limited for small businesses; while a small business must still set up a data security program, it is compliant if the program “contains reasonable administrative, technical and physical safeguards that are appropriate for the size and complexity of the small business, the nature and scope of the small business' activities, and the sensitivity of the personal information the small business collects from or about consumers.â€? The NYS Attorney General can sue for civil penalties for a failure to comply with the law’s data security requirements, which is deemed a violation of NY’s prohibition on deceptive acts and
practices. The new law does not create a private right of action, meaning that consumers are not legally entitled to enforce rights provided by the law. Businesses that are not yet in compliance should take steps to put into place an appropriate data security program. And while the SHIELD Act aims to protect consumers' private information and impose accountability on companies that do business within NYS, consumers should still exercise sound judgment and discretion when it comes to their personal information. Before sharing their information, consumers should find out why their data is being collected, whether and why it will be retained, who will have access to it, whether it will be shared or sold, and how securely it will be kept. Consumers should ask questions and read consumer privacy disclosures to get as much information as possible about how their privacy will be handled, and not proceed until they’re fully informed.

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
Building Your Autism Network Parenting a child on the autism spectrum can sometimes feel like being marooned on a ship in the middle of the ocean, where you feel abandoned or isolated with little hope of ready rescue or escape. Your immediate family and your special child are the only people who are your “buoys” to keep your heart and faith afloat, amidst the menacing waters. Those waters could be the general public, the school system, various government bureaucracies, medical practitioners and even your closest friends. I endured these sinking feelings of isolation when I started the journey in parenting my daughter with autism. However, four years ago, after penning this column and founding Rockaway Beach Autism Families (RBAF), I discovered other “buoys,” and learned the importance of building an autism network. And folks, once I discovered that network, those menacing waters became calmer, less threatening and even to my greatest surprise, welcoming. In the book, “Thinking Person’s Guide to Autism,” the chapter, “Getting to Know Your New Neighborhood: Reaching Out and Building A Network,” gives a great synopsis of why building a network is vital not just for your child, but you as a parent or caregiver. Two keys takeaways for me were: 1) Building a Strong Network of Experienced Parents. Since founding Rockaway Beach Autism Families, I have not just
met parents from all walks of life, but even count them today as friends. These special people made me feel like I’m not alone and have been such shores of support. At our monthly support group meetings, we share information about new diagnosis support, managing challenging behaviors, picking eating, special education services, school placement and IEP support, bussing, ABA and other therapies, accessing state benefits, medications, doctors and financial planning. Some parents have “been there, done that, wrote the book,” and are so willing to share their experiences and what they learned in their journey parenting their child. So, I encourage anyone caring for an individual with autism to attend even just one support group meeting or attend a special event. It may be daunting to share or ask questions to a room of strangers, but you never know what you’ll learn or the new friend you’ll make. I can’t emphasize how much being with other parents has empowered and kept me on the course navigating the system to get the best services for my daughter. 2) The Art of Self-Protection. There was a period when I dreaded bringing my daughter to gatherings hosted by friends or family. I’ve endured many experiences when I felt that my daughter was almost treated like a dog unwelcome in their house. Everyone would ooh and aah

about how pretty she was, but then there were the comments, “Why does she walk on her toes,” “Why isn’t she talking? Is she deaf?” and the worst, when she would run around, “Control your child!” Then there were others who would restrain their children from getting too close to her, as though autism was contagious. I used to feel the heat rising inside of me, biting my tongue from cussing everyone out. Then I learned the art of self-protection by simply putting certain costly relationships on hold. As stated by the chapter’s author, “Your child’s diagnosis may change your relationship with your existing friends, and it is something you cannot prepare for or prevent. Friends who invariably cause pain can drag you down. Protect yourself and place friendships on hold if they are hurting your mental health.” Once I did that, holidays and birthdays got lighter because I was able to enjoy my daughter in settings that I knew she would
The Rockaway Times shine, and most importantly, be herself. To conclude, don’t underestimate the importance of surrounding yourself with like-minded people, who understand the world of autism. Mind you, over the years, certain family and friends will come around, and slowly, you’ll let them in. As empowered parents on a united front, we can shift society’s view of autism from "disabled" to “divinely gifted." Slow Cooker Beef Stew By Sharon Feldman
For a cold winter night, nothing better than stew Serves: 6-8 Ingredients: 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 2 pounds of chuck roast, cut into bite-size pieces 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon pepper 4-5 medium red potatoes, chopped (approx. one pound) 4 medium carrots, peeled and sliced 4 stalks celery, sliced (1/4”1/2”) 1 large onion, chopped 6 cloves garlic, minced Bay leaf Beef Gravy Sauce: 1-14-ounce can crushed tomatoes 1 can beef consommé 1 can low sodium beef broth 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1/3 cup of all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons beef bouillon
1-1/2 teaspoons brown sugar ½ teaspoon EACH ground cumin, paprika, dried oregano, dried thyme Directions: Toss the bite-size pieces of meat with salt and pepper. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add half the meat and cook for 2 minutes until seared, then turn and cook another 2 minutes. Repeat until all meat is cooked and transfer to slow cooker. Add all the vegetables and garlic to the slow cooker, and toss with the beef. Add all the Beef Gravy Broth Sauce ingredients to the skillet. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer until thickened. Add to the slow cooker and mix until combined. Cook on high 4-6 hours or low 8-10 hours. Discard bay leaf. Season with salt and pepper, if needed.

More Than $9K Raised for Down Under at The Dropout The Dropout will be dropping donations Down Under after a successful fundraiser at the Riis Park restaurant. Despite the snow, the Rockway Strong: Australia Bushfire Relief Fundraiser on Saturday, January 18, was a huge big hit. With donated prizes from more than 60 local businesses or individuals, plus live music by Shannon Dinerman, Jus-
tine Grove, Mike & Miley, The Porretto Brothers, Kyle Wade, Chris Long and Tiffany Lyons, food served by The Dropout and beverages served by Riis Point, there was plenty of reason for people to head up to Riis Park on the snowy Saturday. Most of the event, organized at the last-minute by The Dropout’s Julia Steinberg, took place in a tent outside of the restaurant, but with weather leading to some technical difficulties, last acts, The BEasy Band and Wine With Sue had to skip their sets as the event moved indoors. However, the fundraiser had already completed its mission of raising money for the cause. In total, the event raised $9,150, which will be split evenly between wildlife charity—WIRES, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which is helping the people impacted by the fires in Australia. Golden Age Opportunities By Marina Cregan
There are many new opportunities available for senior citizens that they may not be aware of. From programs to benefits and even affordable housing, there are many options available to those of the golden age. Rockaway resident and Director of Senior Programs at Kingsborough Community College (KCC), Susan Lavin, has organized educational and fitness programs specifically designed for senior citizens. Located at KCC, the My Turn Program, is free for seniors ages 60 and over. The My Turn Program, which has been at the college for almost 40 years now, allows seniors to enroll in over 400 different college credit classes. The courses vary from art, music, history, computers, health education, literature, as well as many other categories. In this program, seniors will be taking courses with other college students, and will have full access to the campus’ facilities, including the library, gym, pool, tennis courts, and even a private beach. In the past, about 300 students have participated in this program, including many Rockaway locals. Another program offered is the Live Well- Do Well- Age Well Program, which is designed to offer participants, ages 50 and over, the skills and tools needed to reap the benefits of this wellness program. In this program, seniors will be taught how to navigate longer lives, sleep, exercise, healthy eating and hydration, financial fitness, and medication management. Specifically designed for seniors, this specialized workshop focuses on the importance of movement, such as stretching and alignment, nutrition, and medication. This program is offered at three locations, KCC being one of them, Bay Ridge Neighborhood NORC Connect, and is currently looking for a local space to extend this program right here in the Rockaways. Being a Rockaway local herself, Lavin is particularly excited about the addition of a Rockaway location, which is being

created with the help of Councilman Eric Ulrich. He will be allocating the funding for this free program for seniors. As Director of Senior Programs at KCC for almost 20 years now, Lavin says one of her main goals through organizing these workshops is bringing people together. These programs are a way for seniors to meet new people similar in age and exercise their brain. “I believe that when we enhance peoples’ connections and social networks, we help improve the quality of peoples’ lives,” says Lavin. Additional efforts on behalf of senior citizens are being taken by Assemblywoman, Stacey Pheffer Amato, regarding transportation benefits. Amato has organized an MTA Outreach on Friday, January 31, at the First Congressional Church (340 Beach 94 Street) with the sole purpose of advocating for reduced fares on Metro Cards for seniors, as well as people with disabilities. Of course, JASA continues to serve the community with its two senior centers, the Rockaway Park Senior Center and the Roy Reuther Senior Center in Far Rockaway. The Rockaway Park Senior Center, located at 106-20 Shorefront Parkway, is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and offers a plethora of programs for seniors including exercise classes, arts, computer classes, games, daily lunches and more.

Seniors also have access to affordable housing. On January 9, Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens declared that there will soon become 135 affordable apartments for low-income
seniors. As already one of the largest providers in the nation with over 4,300 units, Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens will offer even more affordable housing to those in need. Due to severe infrastructure damage, Our Lady of Loreto Church in Brooklyn, will be torn down and replaced with the new housing. Named after the church, the complex will be called the Loreto Apartments, and will ensure safety for its residents by providing 24hour security. The building will also have a fitness room. CEO of Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens, Monsignor Alfred LoPinto, says that this new affordable housing complex will be, “senior housing, a community center, and it will again provide those very needed services,” for seniors. Construction will take two years. From affordable housing, to educational and inspirational programs, to proposed transportation benefits, the opportunities are increasing for people in their Golden Years!
Pheffer Amato Calls for More Nonpublic School Security Funding After a hike in anti-Semitic crimes aimed at Jewish individuals in NYC and across the country, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato and her colleague, Assemblyman Daniel Rosenthal, have called upon the NYS Legislature to substantially increase security funding for nonpublic schools in the state’s budget. Historically, the Legislature allocated $15 million annually for the Nonpublic School Safety Equipment (NPSE) Grant. This translates into approximately $37 per child. In response to recent events, New Jersey increased its allocation to $150 per child for security, doubling its previous rate. Pheffer Amato and Rosenthal propose New York double its allocation to $30 million, to protect children against the dangers caused by rising anti-Semitism. “Currently, a sense of urgency is felt to safeguard Jewish communities, especially our young-
est and most vulnerable citizens. Therefore, I feel strongly that this funding is critical to take a stand against the recent spike in anti-Semitic hate crimes which, unfortunately, show no sign of decelerating,” Pheffer Amato said. “I am hopeful that this funding will be granted so that a measure of peace can be felt by those who may be targeted, and so that we join together to demonstrate our stand against hate.” Aside from recent high-profile attacks, there have been almost daily incidents of knockdowns, rock throwing, cursing, spitting, and other forms of abuse aimed at visibly Jewish individuals. In the past year, NYC has seen a 20% increase in hate crimes and a 26% increase in anti-Semitic attacks, which comprise 55% of all hate crimes. The NPSE Grant is a streamlined, noncompetitive grant available to nearly all nonpublic K-12 schools, regardless of size.
