Thai Rock Gets Seal of Approval By Katie McFadden

A little seal heard about the great seafood Pad Thai at Thai Rock, so he decided to pay them a visit before the restaurant closes for a break for the month of February. On Saturday, January 19, the animal, which Thai Rock owner Robert Kaskel was later told was a yearling harp seal, hauled out onto his dock that serves Rockaway Jetski in the summer. “It looked like he was tired. He was just sleeping. It looked like he was having a dream and quivering like a dog would do while it’s dreaming. I didn’t know if that was normal, so I called 311 and they said there were no animal protection services open on weekends and they wanted to put me through to 911. I didn’t

want to make a 911 call for a seal. But I contacted the precinct and had police come over and they’re all like, ‘that’s so cute.’ Even the harbor unit came over and said there are a lot of seals in the bay right now. They see them all over the marshlands and this one just found my dock and decided to rest.” Kaskel says the Riverhead Foundation, which often deals with distressed marine mammals in the area, told him that the seal was perfectly healthy and its behavior was normal. They referred to the seal’s “banana position,” in which it is curved, as being a great sign. After a good nap, the seal went on its way. “By the time we closed for the night, he returned to the sea,” Kaskel said.

Local Small Businesses Feel the Brunt of Government Mandates By Katie McFadden “We’re focusing on trying to keep our f***ing doors open,” Terence Tubridy, owner/managing partner of In Good Company Hospitality said, as he and other small business owners across the state and city are trying to work through the complexity of new government mandates on businesses, like increased minimum wage and paid time off. In 2014, the City of New York enacted mandatory paid sick leave for employees, up to five days. At the beginning of 2019, New York State mandated yet another increase for minimum wage to $13.50 for businesses with 10 or fewer employees, or $15 for businesses with 11 or more employees. Then recently, Mayor Bill de Blasio proposed making New York City the first in the country to offer mandatory paid vacation, up to 10 days. That proposal will have to make its way through the legislative process before being enacted, but with all of the other recent legislation now in place, mandating businesses to provide things that were once considered bonuses or incentives in the workforce, small businesses are paying the price and feeling the impacts. On January 9, de Blasio announced that he’d be pushing for mandatory Paid Personal Time, which would require businesses with five employees or more, to offer 10 days of paid time off for any purpose, such as vacation. The announcement was applauded by various organizations and elected officials, including local Senator Joe Addabbo, who said, “I believe this city proposal deserves strong consideration. Offering paid personal time off for workers across New York City holds great potential for increasing employee satisfaction, loyalty, and productivity – all of which will benefit our overall economy.”

Yet opponents quickly shot back, such as the NYC Hospitality Alliance, which advocates for restaurant and hospitality businesses. The organization released a statement saying, “Workers in New York City already earn up to a week of paid time off via the paid sick leave law. And, while giving an additional two weeks paid vacation sounds like a nice idea, it has a significant cost for businesses, especially at a time when vacant storefronts plague our city streets and employment growth at city restaurants has gone flat, due in large part to other government mandates." This consistent increase in government mandates, while beneficial for employees, is taking its toll on businesses, especially small ones, and local business owners say they’re feeling the effects and are already taking action to stay afloat. Tubridy, whose In Good Company Hospitality, incorporates 11 bars/restaurants, including local Bungalow Bar, says he sees the good intent behind some of the mandates, but believes the government isn’t taking the effects on small mom and pop businesses into consideration. “These are all good, progressive things, but there’s going to be a counter reaction to this. It’s starting to look like it’s not worth it for business owners to invest in the city anymore. The city’s counter argument is that business has never been as good, but I don’t think they’re differentiating between small mom and pop restaurants and larger chains like your Shake Shacks and Dunkin Donuts. You see a ton of Dunkin Donuts’ and Shake Shacks opening, but on the other side, you see diners closing, and other small restaurants and businesses struggling to keep up with the pace,” Tubridy said. BOYLEING POINTS

Joy of Others I gotta admit, I’m kinda like that comedian who says he enjoys looking at people to get annoyed. His wife asks, you’re gonna end up annoyed, so why do it? Because I don’t want to deprive myself of the enjoyment, he answers. When I drive into a big parking lot, I park the car away from others, in a spot a million miles from other cars. When I come out of the store, my car is surrounded by other friggin’ cars. And it’s not because other spots were taken. No, these people had to park near another car, near me. They can’t help themselves. You go into a restaurant that’s almost empty and the waitperson or hostess seats you right next to the only other people in the place. ESP obviously didn’t work since the moment you glanced over the near-empty place you were sending signals, pleading for appropriate spacing. But no. They want to sit you shoulder to shoulder with someone who probably wanted a little space themselves. Then I gotta be rude and say I don’t want to sit there. I’m sure sitting strangers near each other would save the waiter a couple extra steps, but c’mon. You just want some space, which was on my mind, on my recent trip down south. I was thinking about living in the middle of nowhere while I was in the middle of nowhere. There are a lot of choices. Once you’re off the interstates, you turn down any road and the dogs outnumber people. These dogs, by the way, are

kinda like me. They enjoy getting annoyed by people. At least that seems to be the effect I had on them. I was minding my own business, just biking through the middle of nowhere. But they didn’t see it that way. I guess the dogs were chilling out, basking in the quiet day, content to be alone. And then some moron on a bike has the nerve to pass by. Well, they weren’t gonna stand for it. They came after me to give me a piece of their mind or take a piece out of me. Sometimes there were two or three of them. They’d come barking and yelping in plain English, telling me to get the hell away. Fortunately, they were stopped by a fence. That’s when I got brave and stuck out my tongue. I passed a trailer and then a quarter-mile later, a ranch home, and then it was a half-mile to the next house. I was just forming the thought, what the hell do you do if you live out here, not in the middle but on the outskirts of nowhere, when I heard the first bark. I looked for the fence. There was no fence. But there were two dogs in hot pursuit. The first one was no bigger than a rabbit but he had attitude. He was a German Shepherd in a Chihuahua body. Or maybe he was brave because his buddy was a black, overgrown wolf who snacked on old guys on bikes. Big dog was in full killer sprint. At this point I needed two things I’ve written about: a bidet and an electric bike. Not necessarily in that order. To be continued…

Continued from Page 4 As a small business owner of Thai Rock and Rockaway Jetski, Robert Kaskel believes the mandates go against what the country was built on—capitalism. “This type of behavior is anti-capitalist and the government is chipping away at the cornerstone of what our country is founded on with the right to prosper. Government is becoming more stifling and the impositions they place on businesses in general is hurting small businesses. Large businesses can more easily adapt and change with this increasingly complex bureaucratic system. Many large businesses are already providing many of these things, but when you’re forcing smaller businesses to provide higher pay or more vacation or paid time off, these things negatively impact small businesses. Large businesses are the ones to become more successful because small business is being driven out,” Kaskel said. He went on to add that he feels these changes requested by Mayor de Blasio are being done for personal political gain for a potential votes in a future presidential run, but small businesses are the ones suffering in the meantime. “From my view of how NY government is treating us, I feel that small mom and pop businesses have become the sacrificial lamb for this administration,” Kaskel said. Matt Mazzone, who owns the Rockaway Mazzone Ace Hardware store and two others in Brooklyn, believes that the mandates are ultimately going to have a negative effect. “This situation is unfortunate. It’s being enacted by people that have never run a business before and I think they’re going to wind up hurting many of the people that they’re trying to help. They want to help the uneducated or people who grew up in poor families or even youth looking to help their families, but how are these people supposed to get a job and get ahead in life? How are you going to give a 16-year-old high school kid who’s just starting out, $15

minimum wage and paid sick leave and personal time? It’s hard to justify that for someone sweeping and cleaning around the store. It’s a great way to introduce people to the workforce and teach them about work ethics and hopefully they go on to move up and command the highest salary, but if you’re already paying such a high salary, you have to start hiring people that already have skills. Who’s going to want to take a chance on that kid when you can hire someone with real experience?” Mazzone said. Tubridy agreed that the mandates could impact that longtime community tradition of hiring local kids for entry-level jobs. “Most of these jobs are starting off points for people. It’s entry-level and it’s up to the individual to take it from there. We love that people have made careers out of our businesses. The biggest thing we’re proud of is seeing kids from Rockaway or Broad Channel grow up and see them choose this as a successful career path. Our responsibility as owners is to them, it’s not about maintaining profitability, but maintaining growth, and it’s scary to think we might lose that,” he said. To make up for having to pay higher minimum wages, employers now have to cut back on the hours for employees. “Every single employee has had a reduction in hours, so now we have to do more with a little bit less,” Kaskel said. “It’s unfortunate because we had to cut hours on some of the staff and had to cut on overtime. Payroll has to be a certain percentage

of the business and with those costs getting too high, we had to cut down,” Mazzone said. “This isn’t just an increase to $15 an hour. What many people don’t realize is that businesses also have to pay a payroll tax. So you’re really paying about $17 an hour. The last thing a business owner wants to do is lose good people, so instead you start cutting back on hours,” Tubridy said. The owners say the changes may also impact customers, as prices may need to go up. “I don’t think this was very well thought out because at the end of the day, it’s going to cause inflation. The economy is strong right now and unemployment is low, but the quickest way to stifle growth is with regulations and little by little, you’ll see it slow down and you’ll start to see inflation," Mazzone said. "If labor costs go up, you have to start increasing prices. Vendors are already starting to hit us with higher prices to make up for their labor cost and we have to pass those increases along. We have no choice but to raise prices on some things. I’m all for giving people a fair wage, but that dollar isn’t going to go as far because of inflation.” Kaskel and Tubridy are trying to make raising prices a last resort. “What happens to businesses like mine, when I’m now forced to pay two weeks of vacation time? That alone will add a $25,000 cost to my bottom line if it passes. How do I add $25,000 to my costs without adding cost to my services? I already get people complaining about the prices, so what happens when I raise it fur-

People say, ‘Oh, it’s just noodles, how expensive can it be?’ but I need people to make those noodles and purchase them for me and prep the food for that dish and wash the dishes after. So that’s why I’ve had to cut back on hours and ask my workers to do more. I’m doing everything I can without having to ask my customers to pay more,” Kaskel said. “This will eventually impact customers but our policy is that the last thing we try to do is raise prices, so you figure out what other things you can come up with to save some money,” Tubridy said. As the minimum wage has doubled over the course of a few years, Bungalow Bar has already made small changes to try to keep up, such as switching from rolled up linen napkins, to instead leaving paper napkins in the middle of the table for people to use as needed. “That was a huge cost savings just doing that, so now we’re looking at other ways to save,” Tubridy said. Although trying to overcome them, Tubridy says the government mandates have been nothing short of a challenge. “We want to be able to give our employees pay raises, but there’s no real answer for any of this and we can’t focus on any of the answers because we’re focusing on trying to keep our f***ing doors open,” Tubridy said. Now focusing on opening the Rockaway Beach Hotel, Tubridy says he’s having second thoughts on building out his brand beyond the hotel. “It’s giving us second and third thoughts about building other businesses in New York City for sure,” he said. Mazzone also says he’s now hesitant to expand. “This has become very disheartening. We were looking at different locations and now I don’t think I’d do it in the city. I don’t think it pays anymore,” Mazzone said. For Kaskel, he’s just focusing on trying to keep Thai Rock and Rockaway Jetski afloat. “I love what I’m doing and I don’t want it to go away, so I’m going to work as hard as I can to keep my doors open, but these are not nice things that the government is doing,” Kaskel said.

More Local Restaurants Offer Help to Federal Employees

Last week, Elegante spearheaded a movement to lend a helping hand to federal workers that are feeling the effects of the government shutdown. More than 800,000 federal workers across the country are impacted and not receiving paychecks due to the shutdown that has now lasted more than 30 days. To take off some of the pressure, Elegante offered up a free pizza pie on January 15 to federal workers with ID, and they did it again on January 22. Now other businesses are doing their part to help their federal employee customers. Seven days a week, Jamesons on Beach 129th, is offering free lunch to federal employees until the shut-

down ends. They’re offering a limited menu for this deal. Ciro’s on Beach 116th is also offering a free pizza pie, seven days a week, but federal employees are limited to one pie per week. Thai Rock on Beach 92nd Street is offering a free beer to federal employees, with the purchase of anything at the restaurant or bar. RBQ on Beach 98th Street and Last Stop on Beach 116th Street are both offering 50 percent off bills for federal workers. Broad Channel Celebrates the Life and Legacy of John Schmitt By Kami-Leigh Agard

Though the Broad Channel community, and many near and far are mourning the loss of John Schmitt, the local bay man’s selfless contributions to the community has many celebrating his life and the blazing legacy he leaves behind. John M. Schmitt also known as “Big John,” was born May 4, 1951 to Adam and Ernie (Himpler) Schmitt. He grew

up in Broad Channel with his four siblings, Buster, Barbara, Richard and Billy. He graduated from Far Rockaway High School in 1969 and studied criminal justice at John Jay College. Schmitt was a renaissance man of sorts, as he had numerous occupations including draftsman, electrician, a runner on Wall Street, a mechanic, sand hog, NYPD police officer, farmer, and most notably, the third-generation owner/operator of Channel Marine boat yard in Broad Channel. He also worked at Buster’s Marina and Marina 59. Besides his beloved bay, Schmitt also had a passion for music, especially the guitar, and played in the band, “The Flatlanders,” in Colorado. He enjoyed building things, working on boats, teaching others how things work, politics, and spending time with family and friends. He liked gardening and

enjoyed the challenge of learning Russian. He was a good friend to all, great father, and loving grandfather. For local Eric Witkowski, Schmitt was a legend. Witkowski reached out to The Rockaway Times because he felt, “John’s story needed to be told.” Witkowski said, “John was so selfless. He gave everything he had in his entire life to treating others, better than he treated himself. He loved teaching the kids about boating and Jamaica Bay. With a fork lift, he would move three containers with 20 jet skis to pick up my kids, and take them out not just to enjoy, but learn about the bay.” Witkowski also emphasized Schmitt’s dedication to the marina, Channel Marine boat yard, which he inherited from his grandfather, and his affinity for Jamaica Bay that he loved to share with the Broad Channel community’s children. “John’s grandpa started the marina, and John ran it his whole life. He would send the kids out with a rod, a pail and a killy trap. He loved making people happy and teaching, and the obvious exposure to Jamaica Bay, which we should all be so fortunate to have at our doorstep,” Witkowski said. There’s a sentiment that often the most memorable part of a loved one’s passing – and the most comforting for family and friends – are the stories. And judging from the love flow-

ing in from Schmitt’s family and friends, peppered with laughs and tears, Schmitt has left behind a legacy that no one will ever forget. Schmitt is preceded in death by his mother, Ernie Schmitt; brother-in-law, Mickey Orr; nephew, Michael Orr; and his first wife, Dorothy Wilmarth. He is survived by his son, John Schmitt Jr., and grandson, Danny; daughters, Stephanie Wood and children, Connor and Sarah; Veronica Schmitt; his father Adam (Betty) Schmitt; his siblings, Buster (Carol) Schmitt, Barbara Orr, Richard (Joanne) Schmitt, Billy (Beth Ann) Schmitt; numerous nieces and nephews; former wife, Stacie May; his closest friends, who were more like family, including Ed Wilmarth II, Ed Wilmarth III, and children, Autumn and Ed Wilmarth IV and Rosie Wilmarth. The crematory service will be held at Hillebrand Funeral Home, 63-17 Woodhaven Blvd, Rego Park on January 24 at 9:15 a.m. Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Broad Channel VFW Post #260 located at 713 Shad Creek Road, Broad Channel, on January 24 at 11:30 a.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. John M. Schmitt’s light and legacy will continue to shine in the community and bay that he loved and selflessly served.

The McMahon family’s 19th Annual Take The Plunge event to benefit the New York Lung Transplant Fund takes place on Saturday, February 2, and this year, the McMahons are also dedicating the event to commemorate the life of beloved local Jim Mullen. Annie McMahon, who has Breezy roots, suffers from cystic fibrosis, an incurable disease that causes thick, sticky mucus to form in the lungs and pancreas, triggering chronic infections. According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, over 30,000 people in the U.S. live with the disease. McMahon has had two lung

transplants, and though its not been an easy road for the young woman, much less her family, the McMahons annually hosts the Annual Take The Plunge event to benefit the New York Lung Transplant Fund with the aim of helping others like Annie with the expenses associated with lung transplants. In years past, the plunge has raised funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This is the second year the money will go toward Help Hope Live. The McMahons chose the organization because it assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility to the full extent allowed by law for donors. Donors can be sure that funds donated will be used only to pay for or reimburse medical expenses.

Special Editorial: The Future of the Peninsula Hospital Site By Glenn DiResto

On Tuesday, January 22, a visioning meeting was held regarding the plan for the future of the Peninsula Hospital site, which calls a massive amount of residential units. Glenn DiResto shares his thoughts: The City Planning Commission is considering rezoning and text changes to the former Peninsula Hospital site to allow for up to 2,200 units of affordable housing on ONLY 10 acres of land. Myself, along with many local residents, are in opposition of the plan as currently proposed for the following reasons. Density & Building Size We all know that a project of this scale is too much housing for this area of our small peninsula, without the resources and infrastructure to handle a large-scale development of this size that would have roughly 5,000 new residents. The density of this development will have a negative impact on the quality of life for all current AND future residents

throughout the community. Let's put this proposed large-scale development into perspective, compared to other local largescale developments, to get a better understanding. • NYCHA Ocean Bay Houses: 1,395 units and about 4,000 residents on about 35 acres • Arverne View Apartments: 1,093 units and about 3,500 residents on 14 acres. • Nordac Coop Building: 342 units and about 1,000 residents on around 7.5 acres • Beach 41st Street Houses: 712 units and about 1,800 residents •The Arverne by the Sea Development: Also 2,200 units of housing but on 120 acres NOT 10 acres. Currently the city is involved in the development of a couple other large-scale projects throughout the city and they are better planned out to ensure the communities do not become too densely populated or the area becomes too highly populated with only low-income residents. These are just two of the current

large-scale developments and you can see it is much less populated and mixes incomes. Spofford Redevelopment in the Bronx This project will include 700 units of affordable housing, ground-floor retail, light industrial manufacturing space and other amenities on five acres. Hunter's Point South This prime waterfront property in Long Island City will have up to 5,000 housing units on 30 acres of which only 60 percent will be affordable to low/moderate income. As you can see, compared to the current housing in the Arverne/ Edgemere area mentioned above and the other proposed housing in other areas of the city, this largescale development proposed on the Peninsula Hospital Site would be much more densely populated. Additionally, the size and heights (15 stories) of the proposed buildings are out of character with the beach community and overall neighborhood. Affordable Housing We all know rents have jumped

throughout the city and there is no doubt a need for affordable housing. However, the Rockaways has always bore the brunt of affordable housing and to make this large-scale development 100 percent affordable housing is NOT the answer. Has the city not learned from past failures that it is very important to have a large range of a mixed-income, affordable and market-rate housing to balance out incomes and ensure the neighborhood becomes viable to live, work and play? According to a report by the New York City Planning Commission from November 3, 2003/ Calendar No. 2 C 030509 HUQ, half of the subsidized housing in Queens was located on the Rockaway Peninsula, and construction of additional low and moderate-income housing in Arverne would only increase the proportion. of Environmental Remediation, the following facts apply to the Rockaways. • Edgemere, Arverne, and Hammels are now home to a fairly dense community with a high proportion of low-income residents. • At 16 percent, the unemployment rate of the Hammels-Arverne-Edgemere NTA is more than five percent higher than the rest of the peninsula, Queens (9.6 percent) and New York City (10.2 percent). • Approximately 30 percent of residents in the Hammels-Arverne-Edgemere are living in poverty. This represents a much greater share of residents living in poverty than the rest of the peninsula and New York City (20 percent). • The median household income of residents of the Hammels-Ar verne-Edgemere NTA is $39,373. This is significantly less than the median incomes of residents of the Rockaway Peninsula ($48,171), Queens ($56,780) and New York City as a whole

($51,865). According to the city’s own studies and facts, this section of the Rockaways, where this largescale development is planned, is already one of the poorest in the city, and to continue to bring more lower income families to an isolated peninsula, which lacks the infrastructure and services is NOT the answer. There is a need for mixed housing with higher AMI amounts to ensure residents have safe affordable places to live, as well as residents with disposable income to support the retail that is planned as part of the development. Environmental Study The proposed large-scale development is on the old Peninsula Hospital site. This site was part of the surrounding area of the original Arverne/Edgemere Urban Renewal Plan. During the original Arverne Urban Renewal Area Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) the site was a medical facility and provided medical care for the existing residents of the Rockaways, in addition to all the new residents what would be moving to the Rock-

aways with the development of the Arverne Urban Renewal Area, (Arverne by the Sea & Arverne East). Now that the hospital is closed, which was part of the original Arverne Urban Renewal EIS, and the current proposed plan to build 2,200 units of housing was NOT part of the original EIS, the current DRAFT Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) will not comply with the original EIS. These areas must be studied together to fully understand the impact it would have on the community. You cannot separately study the Peninsula Hospital Site and separate it from the remaining Arverne East area that is to be developed. It needs to be studied together to get a true understanding of the impact 2,200 units of affordable housing would have on the surrounding neighborhood. Not studying the areas together is a clear segmentation and any analysis would be flawed. The Peninsula Hospital site is also in close proximity to NYC beaches that are NOT open to the public due to endangered species that use the shoreline for nesting purposes. The Peninsula

Dear Editor: I would like to share with you a story that has haunted me since I heard it on New Year’s Day. When I asked my neighbor how her Christmas was she started to cry. Tears filled her eyes as she said their Christmas was filled with emptiness and sadness. She told me she hasn’t seen her granddaughter in months and they all miss her, especially her son who is heartbroken. Her son used to have his little girl every weekend, but no longer. His exwife filed false allegations against him, thus causing

The Rockaway Times their child/children’s lives! The scales of justice need to be re-adjusted. Our family court system should be revamped. Our courts have to stop penalizing fathers for wanting to be involved in their child’s life. This story haunts me because my son experienced the same abusive heartbreaking treatment years ago. He hired and paid a lawyer who advised him and us right before the court hearing that “the courts never give custody to a father.” When we entered the courtroom, my son stood before a judge that constantly ridiculed him during the proceedings. After about ten minutes of verbal assault, we all realized the lawyer was obviously right. My husband and I were in total disbelief when the judge laughingly criticized our son for crying! He pointed to him and remarked, “Oh look, the big man is crying”! My son

the court to strip him of all his parental rights. She even had a court order of protection served against him and had him arrested! This young man who I have known all his life is absolutely devastated and heartbroken. The little girl that he loves has been stolen from his life. He has had no contact with her at all in months. No phone call, letters or supervised visitation because of her erroneous allegations. No Christmas with his daughter that he loves and no joyous holidays for his entire family. I personally know this man and his family. He is a good young man who is liked by all that have the pleasure to know him. He deserves to be in his daughter's life. He, like so many others, has been unjustly treated by a family court system that needs to be re-evaluated. We have all heard about Deadbeat Dads, but what about the Heartbroken Dads who want to be in

The judge hit his gavel and ordered us all outside the courtroom to discuss the arrangements with the lawyers. It was only then after being threatened by the prospects of an investigation that his ex agreed to giving him joint custody. If my son listened to his lawyer and didn’t demand custody of his daughter, the end result would have been heartbreaking. He would have been just like so many

Perhaps there wouldn’t be so many deadbeat dads if they weren’t subjected to a court system that is so biased toward men. Our family court should encourage couples to compromise and make alliances to provide each child with two loving parents. Even if the mother and father are separated from each other, a loving parent should not be excluded from their child’s life. Not all men are Deadbeat Dads, some are just Beat–Down by the courts. Starting Monday, January 21, Addabbo’s offices in Howard Beach (159-53 102nd Street) and Middle Village (66-85 73rd Place), as well as the Queens County Savings Bank locations at 15602 Crossbay Boulevard and 156-32 Crossbay Boulevard (inside the Stop & Shop parking lot) started being utilized as drop-off locations for food and toiletries that anyone is willing to donate to help federal workers that are not receiving a paycheck due to the shutdown.

“It is a shame that these hardworking federal employees are caught up in this political back-and-forth,” Addabbo said. “Whether or not President Trump’s wall should be funded, these people — who have families they need to feed and bills that need to be paid — should not be held hostage.” In order to help the furloughed workers, the dropoff locations will be accepting non-perishable food items like canned goods, pastas, cereals, and others, as well as toiletries such as soaps and detergents, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, and more. The supplies will be distributed out of Our Lady of Grace Church, located at 10005 159th Avenue in Howard Beach and the Sacred Heart food pantry located at 83-17 78th Avenue on Glendale.

These sites can also be used as drop-off locations. In order to collect needed supplies at the drop-off locations, federal workers will have to display their federal ID. “I hope that any federal employees who are not receiving a paycheck due to the partial government shutdown come to one of our drop-off locations and help themselves to anything that they need during this difficult time,” Addabbo said. “I appreciate the efforts from Queens County Savings Bank, Sacred Heart, Our Lady of Grace for their efforts in this endeavor, as well as everyone who makes a donation.” For more information on this drive, call Addabbo’s Howard Beach office at 718738-1111. Senator Sanders is also collecting donations of non-perishable food, toiletries along

with baby formula, diapers, and other childcare items for federal workers. Items can be dropped off at Senator Sanders’ District Office, located at 142-01 Rockaway Boulevard in South Ozone Park, Monday – Friday, between 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Those seeking to receive items must present a valid, current, federal ID from one of the agencies affected by the government shutdown. While Senator Sanders is collecting items, anyone with immediate needs can visit the Rosedale-Laurelton American Legion Post 483, which operates a food pantry on Wednesdays from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. It is located at 240-08 135th Avenue in Rosedale, Queens. JUUL E-Cigarettes One of the most important public health advances in the last 50 years has been the reduction in smoking. Among children and adolescents, this progress has been particularly encouraging, with smoking rates declining among eighth-, 10th-, and 12th-grade students from 28.3 percent in 1997 to 5.4 percent in 2017. These positive trends suggest that the powerful appeal of tobacco and nicotine has been reduced in the younger generations. Unfortunately, this may be undone by emerging high-tech e-cigarettes like JUUL. These products are capable of delivering nicotine at levels comparable to combustible

cigarettes. While e-cigarettes do not contain the toxins and carcinogens found in combustible cigarettes, it is becoming clearer that they are just as capable of creating nicotine addiction in those who use them. Many experts believe, and many studies have confirmed, that the use of these products and the creation of nicotine addiction leads eventually to the use of more harmful combustible cigarettes. Unfortunately, e-cigarettes are not regulated to the degree that cigarettes are. For example, the FDA forbids the use of any flavoring except menthol in cigarettes (although that may soon change. The FDA is

considering banning menthol cigarettes). There is no such rule regarding e-cigarettes, which come in many flavors like fruit medley, cool mint, and mango. JUUL Labs, like the manufacturers of other e-cigarettes, claims that their products are not targeted towards children, but rather to adult smokers giving them a “healthier� alternative to smoking standard cigarettes. Left unsaid, of course, is the fact that in a poorly regulated market, even products intended for adults have the potential to attract younger users. The potent nicotine delivery of these products means that along with the potential for harm reduction in adult smokers is the concern of use among young people. Introduced in 2015, JUUL devices quickly overtook the e-cigarette market and accounted for 65 percent of e-cigarette sales by last June. Sales were estimated to be more than $650 million in the first six months of 2018. One study of adolescents and young adults found that 25 percent recog-

The Rockaway Times nized JUUL devices and 10 percent had tried them. The device is small and narrow, resembling a USB flash drive. It fits easily in the palm of the hand and can be easily concealed. The manufacturer claims that taking a puff on the device will result in similar nicotine blood levels as a regular cigarette. As I noted above, it comes in many flavors that would be attractive to young users. (At the time this was written, NY State was considering banning flavored e-cigarettes). Although JUUL specifically claims that it targets only adult smokers, there is no doubt that they would welcome the additional revenue from teens and children. It is time that the FDA and the federal government got serious in regulating these products, such as requiring age verification for internet sales and brick-andmortar sales. What Would You Do If Today Was Your Last Day? The other day I was in a local place and read the sign: “Dance like no one is watching, sing like no one is listening, live each day like it’s your last.” I have read that many times, but on this day, I began to think what would I do if I knew that at midnight, that would be it. Would I go about that day in my normal way? Would I call everyone I know to talk? Would I visit close family and friends? Would I tell anyone? Would I get in the car and take a drive to a beautiful country place? It is kind of jarring to think about it and I really don’t know what I would do. Do you know what you would do if today was your last day? Just got into thinking about the reality of it, which brought me to: I know that the idea behind the saying is to live fully, completely, preciously, by doing things to feel good, nourish the mind, fulfill the inner self. Because we do not know how long we have, we do not know how healthy we will be, we don’t know. Starts to make you think. What is important for me in my life? All food for contemplation. Just like bringing into daily life the gift of gratitude - “actfully” being grateful by thanking out loud the food we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink that create our “prana” - life force energy - and everything that brings us joy, peace, fun, etc.... another beneficial practice is to find meaning or significance in the everyday small things that

come into our lives and that we create on a day-to-day basis. It is remarkable, for example, that we have a meaningful conversation with a friend on a topic that we care about and by acknowledging that, we actually get a heightened sense of fulfillment. Stopping to acknowledge the pattern of the dewdrops as they glisten brings a heightened awareness of nature. So enhancing our daily lives by paying attention and acknowledging is a good way of making life meaningful. The other thought is not putting things off. If you’ve been thinking of going somewhere, or visiting someone, or whatever, just do it. It will make you feel good. If you cannot do something you really want to for financial reasons or family obligations or whatever right now, perhaps researching and planning and spending positive energy on thinking about it will manifest into it actually happening. So “living each day like it’s your last” is really about affecting what is in our control and feeling good about every day: being present and acting on giving, experiencing, making a difference in someone’s life, creating, planning, seeking knowledge - stimulating the heart and mind to actualize a happy life. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Get Unstuck Dear Enchantress, I am beyond frustrated. I am desperately wanting to start things. I want to start painting, I want to start dating, I want to start redecorating my apartment. I am stuck everywhere! I'm impressed I'm actually writing this, I wanted to write to you a year ago. I talk about so many ideas, and never do anything. I'm sure everyone talks bad about me. I judge myself as a loser, lazy and am shocked that I get myself to work every day. I like everything you do, and you get so much done, so much accomplished. It's so impressive

and almost intimidating. I not only want to start, but I want to enjoy it and finish. I'm overwhelmed with all I want to do, and it's already the middle of January, I thought this was going to be a better year. Help? Dear Stuck Starter, Thank you for seeing me as accomplished. I recognize your pattern, there are many things I haven't done or completed or started. I share that with you, so you know that you are not alone. I see women get stuck in three places: In the start; In the stand; In the success.

Instead of figuring out why you are stuck in the start, let me ask you a couple of questions, and give you some tips. What are three things you see that others have done that seems the most fun? Which of the things you've shared in your letter do you have all the materials for? The process I want to give you has five parts for starting projects. And let's call all your ideas, "projects." Let's use the redecorating your apartment. Can you get excited about redecorating a corner space that you can enjoy? Breaking down the project into tiny parts will give you the feeling of success and motivate you to take more small steps. The second part of starting or doing and completing any project is accountability to get the small things done. Overwhelm takes over when you look at a grandiose picture of success. The third part is for you decide what your success looks like. Getting help might be your first success, and voila!!! You've

The Rockaway Times done that! You've asked me! So, well done. Fourth step, be nice to yourself along the way. Fifth and last step, put a date or dates in your calendar (not to be ignored) so you do it and have it on your calendar and not floating in your head, as fuel to beat yourself up with. It is a very interesting algorithm for the high school students that is not based on whether the student passes the exam, but how well they have advanced since the middle school English and Language Arts exams. So, for example, if a student has a four on the eighth-grade exam, they should be getting a score of at least 90 percent. No one takes into account

that the student may have become indifferent or something may have happened in their life that school is not the main point in their life. Maybe they have a job to help support their family and they often miss school or some classes each day. They are adolescents and UNPREDICTABLE. Since this system has been in place, I have been graded on how well the juniors perform on the New York State

English Regents. However, I have taught ninth-grade the last few years and felt confident that the 11th-grade teacher would get us some points. This is the first year I have my own junior class and I will be graded on how well my own students perform. Many people say: well, if you are a good teacher, then your students will do fine. In reality that sounds correct, but not really. If a student is absent all year and does zero work for you to practice for the exam, they can show up and take the exam and be on my data. Students can transfer into a school from another school or another country and be sitting taking the exam, sometimes in a language they do not speak, and come up on our data. I once had a physical education teacher complain to me about being graded on how good students perform on regents exams. I suggested in today’s day of many children being overweight that we weigh the students on the

Page 27 first day of school and record their BMI and then look at the improvement in June. The physical education teacher’s response: “I can’t control what they do at home.” I said: “EXACTLY.” Some people say that we as teachers need to be accountable for our paycheck. Well to quote one of my friends (and I have seen this comparison in a few teacher publications): let’s grade the cardiac doctor on his patients. He will tell his clients to eat healthier, drink in moderation, exercise each day and quit smoking. If and when that client does not listen and has extreme medical issues, we should grade that doctor ineffective. Have a great week everyone. Stay warm.

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard

Medical Marijuana for Autism — Part II Two weeks ago, I wrote about the possibility of medical marijuana giving my nonverbal daughter with autism the gift of speech. On social media, I received quite a bit of feedback. Some folks responded by saying how the “miracle” drug can be addictive and even evoke psychoactive reactions such as hallucinations and give an undesired “high.” Others had different opinions like, “Why not try it. Doctors prescribe far more dangerous drugs for autism that have unbelievable side effects.” This is expressly why I write this column and started the Rockaway Beach Autism Families support group. I’m not an expert, just a mom selfishly searching and hoping to hear my daughter’s words, and of course, to connect with other parents in the same boat. Autism is a spectrum. I’ve seen and appreciated the entire spectrum. From those that talk, others who have amazing artistic and musical skills, some like my daughter, who are super athletic, and more! Our local amazing band of X-Men all have abilities that would stupefy and amaze the average Joe-Flo. While writing this column, on the news it was reported that “CBS rejects Super Bowl ad for medical marijuana.” Wow, now, I’m thinking, why? Is it because it’s deemed bad or just some

political antics? While researching on the topic, I found an interesting article on marijuanadoctors. com, titled, “Medical Marijuana and Autism/Aspergers.” The site gave an interesting tidbit about autism. The article stated: “The word autism derives from the Greek word “autos,” meaning “self.” The condition was first described by Dr. John Langdon Down in 1887 as “developmental retardation.” In 1943, American Leo Kanner researched people with emotional and social limitations and withdrawn behavior. In 1944, Austrian doctor Johann “Hans” Friedrich Karl Asperger did similar research. Early names for the condition included Kanner’s syndrome and, later, Early Infantile Autism. Asperger later termed it Asperger syndrome. The symptoms of both conditions were similar but not identical in many ways. People with Asperger syndrome had difficulty interacting socially. However, their language ability was stronger, and their understanding of sometimes highly technical subjects was above average. In 1964, Bernard Rimland, who had a son with autism, came up with the first solid argument that it’s a biological condition. Rimland went on to found the Autism Society of America. In 1980, autism was added as “infantile

autism” to the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders — Third Edition (DSM-lll).” This was then replaced by the term “autistic disorder” in 1987. The federal government made autism a special education category in 1991. In 2013, the diagnosis shifted to autism spectrum disorder (ASD).” These are all facts, however, the site really was not useful for me to find a doctor who specializes in prescribing CBD oil for autism within 25 miles of my Rockaway Beach zip code. I’m curious, but not willing to experiment on my daughter. As stated in my previous column, in NYS, only 10 conditions are legalized for prescribing medical marijuana, namely: Cancer, HIV infection or AIDS, Multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury with spasticity, Epilepsy, Inflammatory bowel disease, Neuropathy, Huntington’s disease, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Parkinson’s disease.

Page 31 Folks, what to do? I’m sure I can find a side road where I can get it, but at what cost? I rather my daughter be the healthy, spunky, super energetic girl she is, rather than just drifting on a high for the cost of speech. I could be wrong, but please, reach out if you have had a personal experience or some exceptional information you want to share! Again, more to come on this topic. Fast Fox First State Qualifier for Scholars’ Academy! behind the block getting everyone hyped, then off they went! Fox was quick from the start, out to an early lead, and it was clear he was going for it. Each stroke seemed to bring him closer to his goal. He hit the first turn and came off the wall the clear leader. By the halfway point, there was no question he would win the race, but would he make the cut time? Stroke by stroke, breath by breath, the audience drew quiet as he came in the last five yards. With his head down, Fox took his last three powerful strokes and hit the wall. HE DID IT!! 53.67 seconds, a personal best and a state championship qualifying time! Ben Fox will be the first swimmer to represent Scholars’ Academy in New York State Public High School Swimming and Diving Championships. States will be held at Eisenhower Park in Long Island March 1st through 3rd. Congratulations and good luck to Ben Fox at states! (This article was submitted by Scholars’ Academy.)

Benjamin Fox joined the Varsity Swim Team at Scholars’ Academy two years ago as a freshman, making a splash from day one. Fox has always been a team player. Whether it is helping teammates with their flip turns or breaking down their stroke technique, the team always looked up to him for advice. No stranger to hard work, Fox gives one hundred percent in and out of the water; he is a true scholar athlete, who also competes for a club swim team. Over the last two years, Fox has repeatedly led the Scholars’ Academy team to victories, but has really brought it to a new level this year. Fox was trying to make his first state cut in the 100 yard butterfly, and he did not disappoint. With the stands packed and both teams at attention, all eyes were on Fox. Would he do it? Was this the moment? He has come through every time the team has counted on him, but would the same swimmer persevere when he was racing against the clock? Fox looked ready; his usual pre-race ritual
