The holidays are over, and despite the winter being on the mild side thus far, it's cold outside! It’s quite difficult to imagine galivanting through town with no shoes, no shirt, and no plan, since our carefree summer personas have been thinly veiled for several months now. For many, this is the perfect opportunity to give our brains and livers a break and settle into a brief hibernation. It’s a great time to step away from the high-octane insanity that defines this infamous beach town. Many others fly south in an attempt to keep their summer selves alive through the winter months. This can be both a bold and a dangerous endeavor. Whatever your survival methods may be, it’s time to put them on hold for one enchanted evening and let it all hang out at Poseidon’s Prom! For those of you who live both on the rock and under one,

Poseidon’s Prom is the yearly fundraiser for Poseidon’s Parade, Rockaway’s famous art parade. In keeping with ancient Greek tradition, the prom always falls on the Saturday after

the Super Bowl at the Knights of Columbus. That makes this year’s prom date February 8, 2020! I checked in with Rockaway’s favorite actor, comedian, DJ and glitter enthusiast, Paddy Tubz. I spotted him on the ferry ride to YEMSG to catch his 100th Phish show during their yearly New Year’s Run. He told me that he has been preparing his DJ set since last year’s event. “You can never be too prepared!" He shouted with conviction. “A good set list will make or break a show. You can’t just get up there and jam for 40 minutes. There

has to be a plan. You have to keep the people moving. The energy is the most important thing. You can’t let it die with a set-killing boring song. People are paying good money to be entertained!” The interview suddenly ended in a puff of glitter as he disappeared into the late December fog. In a quest for more information, I descended into Poseidon’s Cave, which is in its early phases of construction, to meet with Casey and Geoff. Casey told me that “The Prom theme is ‘Homecoming."' When I asked Geoff for clarification, he shouted, “It’s a Prom-Themed Prom. Make sure to close the gate when you leave.” As I quickly scurried away, I wondered if the spray paint and other aggressively scented fumes in the poorly ventilated basement cave were beginning to get to their heads. I believe my journalistic instincts were once again on point.

Giddy Up When I last checked in, I was a night removed from the Dixie Motel, the place that scared Norman Bates away. Our next stop was horse country in Ocala, Florida, where we had reserved a motorhome for the night. We had planned the trip (from Mount Pleasant to Clearwater) figuring we’d bike about 50 miles a day. Sometimes the best option was a fleabag, sometimes an Airbnb. And with Airbnb, sometimes your only choice is a motorhome or trailer. We had thought about bringing camping equipment and it was only at the last minute did we ask ourselves, what are we nuts? Fifty miles a day through the backwoods of Georgia and backswamps of Florida was nutty enough. Anyway, Ocala was pretty as a picture and the soft, rolling hills were a nice change of terrain. There was very little traffic and who doesn’t like to see horses as you pass down a country road? It was a pleasant enough ride that I almost forgot about my butt that was still grumbling. But since I bundled up, wearing two pairs of padded bike underpants (sorry for the visual), I could barely hear my cheeks saying, hey buddy, give it a rest. We’re

hurting down here. There was one horse ranch after another. A couple of them struck us as odd as their front gates seemed overly protective, like they were CIA horse training facilities. I won’t be surprised when horses start to talk (and spy). They will have been bred here. You don’t have to believe me, but in mid-afternoon we passed by a racetrack named, Bubba’s Speedway. Bubba’s, yep. On a lark, we turned in hoping we could get our bikes on the track for a couple of runs but it turned out to be a dirt track, which was being prepped for that night’s races. They have speeding races and Demolition Derby and that sort of stuff here. We met a young lady who was going to be driving her dad’s suped-up speedster at over 100 mph that evening. Her name is Morgan Johnson, so if she hits it big, we can say we knew her when, y’all. There were some characters around getting ready. One guy drove an old T-Bird that was outfitted with a rooster on back, a rooster that could shoot water out his mouth like a hose. Others were busy putting together weird hybrid vehicles that would later be demolished in the der-

by. It would have been a great thing to see but the racing started at 7 p.m. and we still had 16 miles to go. We pedaled along until we had to turn down a long dirt road. We passed horses who looked down with great curiosity at Rick on his recumbent bike. Finally, we turned in and down another long road and came upon our 40-foot motorhome. Ready to live large. We were met by 10-year old Heather who said her mom was running errands and would be back shortly. It was a little strange that this 10-year-old and her two younger siblings were left here to meet us, but I guess the mom figured two old guys on bikes (one who needs two pairs of padded underwear) and had just pedaled 50 miles were gonna be harmless. It was only five minutes before mom, Sue Ann, showed up and gave us the tour of the motorhome. It had a very adequate shower, a master bedroom for me, and a pull-out for the Rickster. (I won odds or evens). After that tour, a better one was ahead. Sue Ann is a professional stagecoach driver. No, I didn’t know there was such a thing either. She and her dad drive (they don’t ride it) their stagecoach at rodeos and state fairs and cor-

Page 5 porate events. Their stagecoach is from the 1800s and is cool as any John Ford western. Her dad is a kinda famous stagecoach driver who once took a stagecoach across the country—10 miles a day. Took him 16 months. It was called the Reminisce Hitch. Sue Ann was a little disappointed I’d never heard of it. But I have heard of Wells Fargo and her dad is also the official driver of the Wells Fargo stagecoach, which is the bank’s logo. Sue Ann hopped up on the stagecoach and showed us a few moves of what it takes to drive. She then asked if we wanted to go for a ride in the jeep. The horses need regular workouts and get pulled along on runs around the ranch. I said sure, but that was before I found out 10-year-old Heather was the one who’d be driving the jeep. They do things differently out here. Two minutes into the drive, I realized Heather will be over at Bubba’s Speedway in a couple of years. I’d hire her at Belle Rock right now. It was a great, great day. But the next ride comes quickly. Early the next morning, we were headed for a place called Homosassa, not there’s anything wrong with it.

The judge signaled he knew how important this case was and sought to have that decision within the next few weeks. Scala said, “In the meantime, the facility should stay locked

up and individuals should not be entering it.� ***** The Super Bowl isn’t the only thing happening on Sunday. As I left the cave, I wandered onto the boardwalk to find many people taking advantage of the 45-degree sunny weather. One such person was esteemed Knight and Rockaway internet persona, Bill Gehlhaus. “Have you seen the nutcracker man? I haven’t seen him since September!” he frantically asked before recognizing me in my hideous winter form. After pleasantries were properly exchanged, he told me that The Knights are ready for Rockaway Mermaid Brigade’s yearly invasion of their space, and that tickets cost $40 and include an open bar and passed apps. As usual, the ceremony will include the crowning of the prom king and queen, who will lead next year’s parade. In addition to prom king and queen, everyone’s favorite phallic trophy will be formally presented to a distinguished brigade member. Rumor has it that “Melvin James and the Home-

Making it to the Super Bowl is a pretty big deal, but how many people can say they spent Super Bowl weekend taking a dar-

ing plunge into the ocean in the middle of winter? In Rockaway, some may have already done so, and for those who haven’t, now’s your chance. With not one, but two plunge events this weekend, both for a good cause, there’s plenty of reason to take the dip. On Saturday, February 1, is the final Rockaway Plunge for cystic fibrosis. For the past 20 years, Rockaway and Breezy Point have come together to take the plunge on behalf of Annie McMahon, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at a very young age. A few months ago, McMahon’s battle came to an end. Annie died on July 25, 2019 at the age of 22. However, the event held every year for her will live on one more time to help others who continue to live with cystic fibrosis. The event will take place on the bay near the Colony Theater in Breezy Point (500 Bayside). Registration starts at the Colony at 1 p.m. Swimmers who donate $75 will be given a goodie bag and access to the after-party at the Colony Theater, featuring food, an open bar, raffles and DJ music by James Tubridy. Those who aren’t brave enough to take the plunge, but who still want to join the party, can for a $50 donation. All of the proceeds will go toward Help Hope Live to help defray uninsured costs for Cystic Fibrosis patients go-

Continued from Page 12 restaurant relocated to Manhattan. The realization of a lack of options coincided with an idea for his next move. As he nears retirement age, Lima, a chef for more than 30 years, wanted to do something for himself. The idea was encouraged by his business partner and sous chef, Levi Veliz, who he’s worked with for about 14 years. “He said, ‘Chef, why don’t you and I open something?’” Lima recalled. The idea stuck and the search for a location began. Wanting to bring something to his new hometown, Lima began looking for storefronts in Rockaway and soon came across the space that formerly housed Paninico. Originally, Lima considered opening a small café, but seeing a need for something different, he and Veliz decided it was time to give Rockaway a little something more. In this joint venture, Lima and Veliz decided to bring the best of both of their worlds. With

Lima being from Brazil and Veliz from Mexico, both know what’s behind authentic Latin cuisine, and they decided to share it with others. They came up with the simple concept of BrazMex, a restaurant with a menu offering the best of what Brazil and Mexico has to bring to the table. In July, they officially rented out the location and took the time to build it out, completing the décor with artwork from both of their native lands and clocks that display the times in America, Brazil and Mexico, making guests feel connected to the places that inspire the cuisine that tantalizes their taste buds. And the food already has people coming back for more.

Since opening on January 14, Brazmex has already expanded its hours and has repeat customers. “People started coming. They want to try new stuff, new flavors, and they like it, they really like it,” Lima said. “Everyone is coming back. When we first opened, we were open for five days and now we’re open six and will soon be open seven days.” With fresh ingredients and plenty of flavor, it’s no wonder Brazmex has customers returning. “It’s something different, something new here,” Veliz said. “It’s exciting.” Brazmex is just getting started. While they currently offer lunch and dinner, Lima says they’ll soon add brunch to the mix on Sundays, offering a pre-fixe, three-course menu with plenty of options. They also have big plans for summer. “I think we’re going to be really busy in the summer,” Lima said. With quick bites like tacos and light summer dishes like the Rio tropical salad and a grilled shrimp salad, Brazmex will be a go to on and

off the beach. And to make it easier, the food will come to beachgoers who don’t want to brush off the sand and put on shoes to grab a bite. “We’re going to deliver to people right on the beach,” Lima said. The restaurant doesn’t offer alcohol yet, but Lima says they may apply for a beer and wine license in the future. However, they do offer a selection of water, soda, coffee and tea, and even Brazilian and Mexican sodas to go with your meal. Lima and Veliz are hopeful for Brazmex Café’s future. “Levi and I put a lot of energy and love into this place. We want people to come in and sit here and simply enjoy the food. It’s already happening, and we hope to see a lot more of it,” Lima said. Brazmex Café, located at 241 Beach 116th Street, offers dine in, take out and free delivery. Turning The Page — Avoid The Day Bookstore/ Cafe Open Its Doors This Saturday! By Kami-Leigh Agard

After two years of hosting several Avoid The Day bookstore/café pop-ups at various venues on the peninsula, local husband and wife, Jianna and Jason Heuer, are a shining example of what can blossom from perseverance and faith in your dreams. This Saturday, February 1, the Heuers will jubilantly swing open the doors to Rockaway’s first-ever bookstore/cafe. They signed the lease to ATD’s new home on November 1, and lost no time in getting to work on the much-needed renovations to create the space they dreamt of. “We had to cosmetically strip, repaint and fix everything to turn out the space into the vision that we had,” Jason Heuer said. “Note, we did this for months, while still working at our day jobs. It was a lot of long

nights and weekends. We did most of the work ourselves with the exception of some work that definitely required a more professional skill set. Also, thankfully, we received so much help from friends in the community. So building our store was a community effort. It was just re-

ally heartening to not just have people in the community support the bookstore, but so many people coming out to help us build.” It was that community support during the couple’s last pop-up over the summer that convinced them to go full throttle and open a brick-and-mortar bookstore/café. “The sixweek pop-up over the summer was our real test,” Jianna Heuer said. “And we were so encouraged by the support with people saying a brick-and-mortar bookstore would work here and they really wanted it. At that pop-up, we sold more books than we thought we were going to, and it was really encouraging. We felt that we filled a void in the community that wanted a bookstore and could support it. So of course, signing a lease and finally opening three months later is all very exciting because it’s our dream.”

ATD’s official opening kicks off this Saturday at 10 a.m. Attendees will all receive a ticket at the door for the free raffle. The bookstore will also be giving away samples of pastries from Fat Cardinal Bakery, Rockaway Beach Bakery and Allie's Gluten Free Goodies, (an award-winning bakery based in Hickville, L.I., that sells gluten-free, nut-free, legume-free, dairy-free and kosher treats). In addition, the Heuers will be gifting a free cup of tea to those who purchase a book. However, one of the most exciting presentations will be the unveiling of ATD’s own blend of coffee called, “Bookish Blend.” The Heuers are beyond stoked. “The distributor is from my old hometown town in upstate NY. As of now, the Heuers have already stocked more than 3,000 books in the bookstore. “When we did the summer popup last year, I joined the American Booksellers Association, and learned a lot about what really sells in independent bookstores. We still have a Beach Reads section, Jason’s section, a very large children’s section, where now there is even a play area and a teepee with toys they can play with, fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks, self-care (rather than self-help), local authors, short stories, memoirs/biographies, mysteries/thrillers, classics/poetry, home and garden, and DIY,” Jianna said. Jason added, “Plus we have two new sections, the owners’ day jobs section. For Jianna, it’s the psychology section and for me, it’s a graphic design and art

section.” “For the month of February, we are going to keep building our stock, fine tuning it to what our customers like and maybe want to see more of. We’re even going to have a suggestion box because again, we really want to serve the community. We don’t want to force our personal tastes on our customers. So our inventory is constantly going to be evolving. For example, if a book or pastry seems to be more popular, or if the coffee is too strong or too weak, or even if we work on other coffee blends named after a famous author, we are going to always keep in tune with what our community and customers want. Also you have to consider that it’s almost like we are opening two businesses at once, the bookstore, and the

As for when they will be serving wine, the Heuers are in the process of applying for the NYC tavern wine license. Jianna Heuer said, “However in the interim, we will be only be serving nonalcoholic beverages with the exception of special events, such as on Independent Bookstore Day (April 25) and over the Memorial Day weekend. We only have three special event permits where we could sell wine, so we want to use them wisely, until our official Tavern Wine License comes through.” Jason Heuer added, “We plan on being around for a long time. So once we get our Tavern License, it’ll be just part of our constant evolving as a business.” After a three-year endeavor and finally seeing their dreams come true, Jianna says, “To put it mildly, it’s crazy. After spending three months of building the space out, I’m extremely excited for the opening. I’m just so hap-

However, I think once we open the doors and people start coming in and walking around inside, the reality will really start to sink in. “Five years ago, we moved to Rockaway, which was a dream within itself, and now opening our very own bookstore is a double-dream that came true,” he said. Doc’s Advice Dear Editor: I would like to comment on the recent media hysteria about the coronavirus, which originated in China. As usual, the media (but not The Rockaway Times, of course) exaggerates a threat in order to, as William Randolph Hearst said, sell "newspapers." Remember the avian flu, among other "dire" threats? The coronavirus is less deadly, and less contagious, than influenza. It is passed from person to person much like the flu, or common cold, is. You can contract it by inhaling aerosolized droplets that an infected person coughs into the air. To put this in perspective, on average, 80,000 people die of the flu and its complications in this country every year. There have not been, and probably won't be, any deaths from corona in this country, unless someone drinks too much Corona beer. There is no need to worry about this most recent "threat," nor is there any reason to wear a surgical mask while reporting in front of a camera. If it's a natural part of the wall, won't that leave Far Rockaway exposed at the Reynolds Channel/East Rockaway Inlet? For those who don't know, that's the area by the Atlantic Beach Bridge. I've seen the water in the channel almost overrun the beach at Beach 9th Street, with the high tides that are caused by lunar gravitational pull at new and full moons, in addition to storms coming in from the ocean. It's a low point on our beach, and prior to Sandy, caused me to wonder why several new buildings had been built with the garages below the level of the street, at Beach 9th Street by Seagirt Boulevard. Outside of our peninsula, comes the second question. In the Netherlands, the floodwaters would come, overall, from one side: the eastern Atlantic Ocean. As far as I know, there are no major rivers flowing into the area "behind" their wall. Won't "our" wall hold back water traveling naturally "downhill" from upstate, to the ocean from the Hudson River, or from the Long Island Sound via the East River, driven by the storm our wall would be raised against? This surge would affect City Island in the Bronx, as well as the beaches on Staten Island, Coney Island, and us in the Rockaways. Water behind a dam usually rises, doesn't it? What answers does the United States Army Corps of Engineers have? If paid

Pheffer-Amato Appointed to Mitchell-Lama Working Group Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato was appointed to a New York State Assembly working group by Speaker Carl E. Heastie. The group, led by Assembly Housing Committee Chair Steven Cymbrowitz, will identify and propose solutions on the most pressing issues affecting limited profit housing companies, known as and referred to as Mitchell-Lama housing developments. The Mitchell-Lama program, which began in 1955, provides affordable rental and cooperative housing to moderate- and middle-income families. There are both city- and state-supervised Mitchell-Lama developments, totaling more than 110,000 units. While some are operated as rentals, most are operated as resident-owned cooperatives, with a board of directors elected by shareholders responsible for policy and financial decisions.

“Within my district alone there are over 2,800 units of resident-owned Mitchell-Lama cooperatives and for years my office has been inundated with thousands of complaints and concerns relating to this housing," Pheffer Amato said. “When the people speak, it is our job as elected officials to listen. Rockaway Locals ‘March for Life’ By Marina Cregan

This past Friday, January 24, a group of Rockaway residents took a bus from St. Francis de Sales in Belle Harbor to Washington D.C., in order to join the Annual March for Life Rally. Founded by Nellie Gray, this march has taken place every year since January 1974. The March for Life Education and Defense Fund organizes the rally in Washington D.C. annually on the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision of Roe V. Wade. This year’s rally stood out for several reasons. One of them being, 2020 marks the centennial of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. According to the March for Life Education and Defense Fund, this year’s theme is "Life Empowers: Pro-Life is Pro-Woman.” Last week’s march was also significant due to President Donald Trump being the first president in history to ever at-

tend the event. When speaking at the rally, Trump said, “One life changes the world, and I am fighting for you.” Trump spoke about the importance of family. On the same day, Vice President Pence spent the day in the Vatican at a meeting with Pope Francis discussing the pro-life movement in the U.S. Rockaway locals stood alongside tens of thousands of people in the crowd participating in this year’s March for Life. The

group of approximately 40 attendees, was comprised of residents from all the parishes on the peninsula, and was organized by SFDS parish member, Rita Hayden. Rally attendees were both young and old, even some current junior high students from St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy were in attendance. The students attended this rally to protect human life on the feast day of the school’s patron. St. Francis de Sales wrote, “Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing is as gentle as real strength.” These words resonate with the message of the rally itself. When discussing the rally with Mrs. Diane Erhard, an

SFDS parish member and rally attendee, she too spoke of strength. She said she encouraged her grandchildren to attend so that future generations of Catholics would use their strength to fight for life, particularly for those who cannot fight for themselves. “When I looked at all the people in the crowd, I was inspired," Erhard said. “That is why I brought my grandkids, so they too could be inspired.” Event organizer, Hayden, was pleased with the positive energy from the marchers. She commented on the spirit of the crowd, adding that she didn’t see any negative protest signs. Hayden said, “Freedom of speech, everybody’s happy— no problems. It’s a great day, all about pro-life.” The bus had departed SFDS at 6 a.m., and did not return until 10:30 p.m. However, the long day does not keep attendees like Erhard from marching year after year. “I put it all in God’s hands,” Erhard said.

Lactose intolerance refers to the clinical syndrome in which symptoms of bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea arise following the consumption of lactose-containing foods. Lactose is a sugar found in dairy products. It is a disaccharide, meaning it is made of two monosaccharides (simple sugars), namely glucose and galactose. As an aside, the third monosaccharide is fructose, or fruit sugar. Fructose, when combined with glucose, forms the disaccharide sucrose, known as table sugar. In order for it to be absorbed into the body, lactose must be broken down in the gut by the enzyme lactase into glucose and galactose. Failure to break down lactose in the gut creates the symptoms of lactose intolerance. Simple sugars are absorbed at the tips of the microscopic ridges and valleys of the small intestine. These tiny ridges and valleys look

like hairs under a microscope and are called villi. In addition, bacteria found in the gut also help to breakdown lactose. Altering the bacterial makeup of the intestines, known as the gut microbiome, may decrease the ability to break down lactose. Most babies are born with enough lactase to break down milk they are fed. Congenital lactose intolerance, which is rare, causes the baby to begin to have abdominal pain and diarrhea several days after birth. After about three months of age, the levels of lactase in some infants begins to drop, causing symptoms of lactose intolerance. Lactase levels are determined by a person’s genetic background. A minority of humans retain persistently high lactase levels into adulthood. These people usually have a northern European or Scandinavian heritage. The current theory for this is that their ancestors domesticated cattle centuries before other peoples did and therefore consumed diets rich in dairy products. Those

While primary lactose intolerance is genetically determined, secondary lactose intolerance may occur. Diseases that destroy the villi in the intestines, like Crohn’s disease and celiac disease, may cause secondary lactose intolerance, as may diseases or conditions that alter the gut microbiome, for example intestinal infections, radiation/ chemotherapy enteritis, and prolonged antibiotic treatment. Lactose intolerance can usually be diagnosed by symptoms and dietary history alone, but there are confirmatory tests. There is the lactose tolerance test, in which the patient ingests a 50gram dose of lactose and serial fingerstick glucose samples are taken. If the glucose level rises 20 mg/dl or more as compared to baseline, the patient has sufficient lactase to breakdown the lactose into glucose, therefore the patient is not lactose intoler-

ant. There is also a lactose breath test, which measures the level of hydrogen in the breath following a 25-gram lactose challenge. Lactase deficient people will have the lactose they consumed remain in the gut unabsorbed where it is fermented by gut bacteria, creating hydrogen gas. Treatment is simple—avoidance of lactose containing foods. However, because most dietary calcium and vitamin D come from dairy products, those avoiding dairy must get these nutrients from other foods. Lactose intolerant people can consume up to about one cup of whole milk without causing an increase in symptoms. Alternatively, some people take a pill containing lactase before a meal containing dairy. This helps to prevent symptoms as well. A Prince of Rockaway

A Prince has many great and noble qualities. First and foremost, a Prince is a gentleman in the oldest and truest sense of the word. They have an air of chivalry about them, they are generally the one who will lay their jacket across a puddle for a lady to be able to walk across. They hold doors, they say please and thank you. They never overstay their welcome, although they are always the first to be there when you need a hand. They give up their seat to a person older or in need of a seat. They never speak foully, even when it is most definitely called for, and they always speak well of people, or they

say nothing at all. There are very few Princes in real life. In my view, being a Prince has nothing to do with some hereditary or King given right, nor does it have much to do with one’s economic standing in life. But it does have everything to do with how one lives their life. Being Princely has an almost spiritual quality about one, because someone who acts in this way strives always to do what is right. Princes do small things with great meaning. They are “present,” less concerned with themselves and always seeming to run around doing one thing or another for others. Be it a cup of coffee to one who needs it, a trip to the store for one who can’t get out, a smile, a laugh, a look that says, “don’t worry, everything will be ok.” Princes have kingdoms, for they cast a huge shadow over

the hearts that they permeate. Their kingdoms are not always physical palaces, but somehow, they make you feel special and noble along with them, so it feels like you are living in a palace. A kingdom can be a block, tavern, a home, a state of mind. Some kingdoms are adorned with flags. Some of those flags get hung up mysteriously every spring by the Prince and his assistant (I like to refer to the assistant as the Duke, not because of any nobility thing, but because he is a lot like John Wayne!), so when you look up, you are taken by surprise that the entire block is adorned with flags. Princes act in strange and mysterious ways sometimes, their one moment, retiring at an early hour, the next moment, and sometimes predictably so. Anyone frequenting a certain porch would know this for sure. Machiavelli’s Prince was practiced at the art of deception, intrigue and manipula-

tion. That’s not the Prince we are talking about here. Disney’s Princes are usually on a white horse and have long flowing blond hair, muscles, and battle witches; again, definitely not what we are talking about here. Our Prince is just an everyday, low-key kinda guy, born and raised in his hometown, happy to stay within a five-block radius of his castle. When a Prince leaves us, it seems like a dark time, and for a while it will be. But how lucky were we to have been in the presence of a Prince. What a great example of how to act and live a life. We need more princes in the world, more noble qualities. In short, we need more people like Dick Roberts, the Prince of 130th Street., we will miss him dearly. We can take some solace that although our Prince has left us and our Duke has moved, we still have a King on the block. Thank goodness for that!

Your Triggers Are Your Teacher By Kristen Kilgallen

If I told you that nothing is inherently good or bad, the voice inside your head would immediately pipe up with many objections. “So, you’re saying it’s not bad to commit a crime” or “You think, it’s not good to care for my mother.” This is the nature of the mind, it likes to label and categorize things; avoid the bad, chase

after the good, and anyone who disagrees is the adversary. But language is simply a tool we have to externalize our perception about what is going on in and around us. If we didn’t automatically label our experience in light of the culturally conditioned and accepted patterns of what is good and what is bad, we would be more open to see-

ing what our body is telling us, what knowledge or guidance we are receiving from our experience and what inner knowing we have about it; the only universally agreed upon aspect about our experience, is that it’s temporary, always shifting, with different highs and lows. We have been conditioned by the external world to believe that the cause of our good or bad feelings is outside of ourselves, and our inner world is simply reacting to that which is around us. We then think that the only way to avoid negative emotion is to fix what is going on outside of us, to tell that triggering person what they said is wrong, or to avoid that thing that causes us to feel negative emotion. But evasion of what triggers is what keeps that emotion trapped inside, resurfacing again and again, as we try to wrestle anything or anyone to the ground who activates something in us in this way. This is the root of human’s desire for control, which manifests in unhealthy

The Rockaway Times ways—addiction, perfectionism, eating disorders—we all want to control our external reality, when really all we can control is what is going on inside of us. Our triggers are simply alerting us to what already exists inside. It’s not the person. It’s not the words. It’s an emotion we have harbored inside, and as we continue to relate to our triggers with anger, or sadness, or frustration; rather than compassion and curiosity, the more we will manifest experiences in our life that will continue to alert us of these emotions that are trying to escape and teach us of our true nature, our true nature beyond what our mind believes we are, but the unconditional love and light that underlies all beings. This is not meant to excuse other people’s hurtful behavior, not at all. Experiencing your triggers and learning about what they are teaching you will allow you to take your Continued on page 27

own inner power back and understand that no one outside of you can control the inner peace and love that is within you. Showing these things you hate compassion will not make them grow, but will prove that you aren’t the thing you are releasing. If someone you love is sick, and you feel triggered by their state of health, learn to love that fear, that fear that is teaching you about your own fear of death, or fear of being alone, or attachment to the past, and love that this fear is not who you are, but is allowing you to grow and expand. Instead of saying, “I’m scared,” you can say, “I am experiencing fear,” and relate to the experience in a new, open way. We can live unconsciously, and believe that “time heals all wounds," but really it just gives us time for our emotions and beliefs to grow and develop a home in our bodies, lying dormant until a sudden person or comment pokes it

After following the rules of rational and logical thinking for years, we’ve become non-responsive to that which is the guidance from our intuition, our inner knowing. Our triggers awaken us to the strong inner guidance inside of us that is pulling at us to heal the parts of ourselves we still haven’t learned to accept. The problem is never what is going on outside of ourselves, but the things we won’t face inside of ourselves. We don’t have to be afraid of experiencing these negative things, they are simply our teachers and invitation to respond in a new way.

SFDS Makes School Security #1 Priority

Due to the recent horrific anti-religious attacks and the rash of mass shootings, the call for safety within schools is urgent, especially for nonpublic schools that operate on much smaller budgets. Although the New York State Legislature has historically allocated $15 million annually for Nonpublic School Safety through the NPSE Grant, Assembly Members, Daniel Rosenthal and Stacey Pheffer Amato, are proposing that NYS double its allocation. Due to the dangers associated with these recent attacks, it is necessary to take precautionary measures to ensure safety and protect our children. While this proposal will go to all nonpublic schools within the area,

this sense of urgency comes from the specific anti-Semitic attacks within our Jewish communities. Amato says, “I feel strongly that this funding is critical to take a stand against the recent spike in anti-Semitic hate crimes, which, unfortunately, show no sign of decelerating.” While the assembly members wait for NYS’ response, St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy (SFDSCA) has already taken steps in the right direction. It is being proactive regarding school security and safety measures. On Friday, January 17, the Brooklyn Diocese arranged an active shooter response training at SFDSCA, where the faculty and staff participated in a roughly four-hour training and simulation. The training began with a brief presentation, where the faculty learned the “Four L’s�: Locate, Lockdown, Leave, and Live. The “Four L’s� are the actions which the faculty must take if an active shooter was to ever enter the school facility. The faculty must locate where and what the actual situation is, lockdown the classrooms, leave the area (if possible), and finally, the ultimate goal of living, or surviving the situation. During this presentation, the faculty were also taught how to use everyday classroom objects in order to create barricades, keeping the active shooter out of the classroom. After the presentation, the faculty were put to the test

The entire staff was expected to implement what they learned and apply the “Four L’s� to various scenarios, as if a shooter was really in the building. There were different types of simulations, some being in the actual classrooms and others in the hallways, small hall, and the gym. By creating different types of simulations, it allowed the faculty to learn about the many different possible scenarios that could occur, ensuring utmost preparedness for any future circumstances. such high-profile, anti-religious crimes lately, it is important to add other security measures to the school. “We want to be better prepared, God forbid we had a security breach within the school, but most importantly is student and faculty safety,� Scharbach said. The teachers were appreciative of their newly acquired knowledge. They discussed how interesting it was to actually practice barricading the doors and to build scaffolding that would block an intruder’s entry. Plans were created as to who would call 911 and what classroom items could actually be used for self-defense. The teachers even practiced how to lock and block all different types of doors depending on which way the door opens and learned to use rope quickly. Second-grade teacher, Trish O’Malley, said, “It was probably the most informative professional development I have ever attended. I

am glad to have learned some strategies to keep the children safe in such a horrifying circumstance. Although, I pray that I never have to use what I learned.� Second-grade teacher, Margaret Cronin, added, “The training was very thorough and gave the faculty a lot to think about in regard to safety and safeguarding our students.� During a time of increased school shootings and anti-religious crimes, it is especially important to protect those who are most vulnerable, the children. With SFDSCA proving to be proactive by taking necessary precautionary safety measures already, hopefully it will encourage the NYS legislature when deciding whether they will double its allocation for the NPSE Grant. Like Junior High science teacher, Maureen Gigliello, says, “Our day was well spent. It was an investment in safety and security. There is nothing more important than that.�

Chicken Cutlets with Mushrooms and Peas By Sharon Feldman

Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 pound skinless, thin-sliced chicken cutlets 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons olive oil Salt and pepper 1- 8 ounce package Portobello mushrooms, sliced thin 4-5 cloves garlic, minced 1/3 cup chicken broth 1 cup frozen peas Directions: Salt and pepper the cutlets. In a large dish, add flour and coat the chicken. In a 12-inch nonstick skillet, heat the oil and add the

cutlets. Cook on medium high heat, 3-5 minutes per side, until browned. Remove to a plate. Add the mushrooms and garlic and cook approximately 3-4 minutes, stirring often. Sprinkle remaining flour from the dish. Cook about 30 seconds. Stir in the broth and deglaze, scraping up any browned bits. Add the peas. Add the chicken back and reduce heat to medium. Cover the skillet and cook 3-5 minutes until chicken is cooked through and peas are done.

From Writers At St. Francis de Sales Nancy Re, writing teacher at SFDS, wanted to share students’ writing with The Rockaway Times. The students in grades six and seven were competing to get their work published in The Tablet. Students were required to write about local people and organizations that exemplified the theme of SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP. (The Rockaway Times is pleased to present two now and two pieces more next week). “Have I Done Enough?” (A memorial tribute to my Grandfather) By Julia Turchiano, Grade 7

Patrick Morgan

A man of service and leadership who has been known throughout the Rockaway community is Patrick Morgan. As the oldest son of five, loving husband, father of two, and grandfather to five girls, he always set a good example in his Roman Catholic family. As his brother, John, once said, “He was a tough act to follow,” and all that knew Morgan would agree. When Morgan was younger, he always convinced his brothers and sisters to go to their local parish and help clean up. Mr. Patrick Morgan went through many hardships in his life including his mother passing away at a young age, getting diagnosed with leukemia after his first grand-

daughter was born, and having to carry around an oxygen tank with him in order to breathe as he traveled throughout the neighborhood. Patrick Morgan put on a brave face, didn’t complain, and put others first, no matter what he was facing. As an adult, Morgan continued to lead his own service projects, even while battling cancer, to fundraise money for the less fortunate. Morgan contributed his time and service to the Sisters of Mercy at the Dorothy Bennett Center and the Catholic Church. Before he got sick, he worked a full-time job and volunteered helping adult immigrants learn English with his limited spare time at the center. Even when Morgan became ill, he continued to dedicate his time to the Sisters of Mercy, but mostly over the phone and on the computer. Eventually, the Sisters of Mercy elected Morgan as their leader and chairperson to help develop the center further. He was able to get air conditioning, new paint, up-to-date computers and other equipment for the center. After 13 years of volunteering, he passed away and the Sisters of Mercy dedicated a room to him as a tribute to his service and leadership. The life Morgan lived left an impact on others, such as his family members, the community, and even his friend, Jim Cunningham, a St. Francis de Sales reverend. Morgan was comforted when Cunningham came to visit him to talk, laugh and pray together when he was very sick. They discussed the many times in Morgan’s life when he was able to find time for others and reflect on the impact of his work. At Morgan’s funeral Mass, Reverend Cunningham shared a little about their talks. He shared that at one point, Pat Morgan looked up and asked, “Have I done enough?” Reverend Cunningham stated that he told Morgan that he was humbled by the question because most people, including himself, have not contributed half as much to society as Pat

did before his passing. “Have I done enough?” left the church assembly and the family to reflect on their contributions to society. It was up to them to learn from Pat Morgan’s service and look for ways to give back to the community. As a young person, you may ask yourself, “What can I do to make a difference?” In your community, there are many ways to help. You can help your community by cleaning up in the environment, participating in Mass, doing random acts of kindness, and always finding ways to make a difference in someone’s life. You can talk to your local parish and ask about teen groups and community service opportunities. It is time to give back and find ways that you can lead and influence others to help out in your community. It is time to ask yourself, "Have you done enough?" A Tribute to Herman Schmitt By Ce Ce Franchock, Grade 6

When I think of a leader, I think about someone who leads by example. Someone who gives his or her time and service back to one’s community. We recently lost a lifelong member of our parish, Mr. Herman Schmitt, who comes to mind as a great example of service and leadership. A memorial Mass was held on Friday, January 3 for Herman Michael Schmitt at St. Francis de Sales parish in Belle Harbor, Queens. Herman Schmitt was born on June 14, 1933 and passed away on December 28, 2019. Herman was 86 years old when he passed away at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Eileen, four children: Therese, Kathleen, Michael & William and 13 grandchildren. Schmitt was a retired NYC school teacher, as well as a lifelong organist at St. Francis de Sales parish. As a teacher, Herman encouraged his students

to learn and grow. He always continued to support the arts and music. He was committed to his role as a professional teacher in the Board of Education. Another role Schmitt had was developing the music program at St. Francis de Sales. He and his wife, Eileen, had a significant role overseeing the music ministry at our parish. Mrs. Schmitt was a substitute teacher at SFDS for decades and she and her husband played and sang at hundreds of weddings, funerals, and weekly Masses. Mr. Schmitt’s gift of music was his ministry and for that he will always be remembered as a devout servant of our parish and academy. Schmitt spent several decades dedicated as the parish organist at St. Francis de Sales. He later moved to St. Camillus parish to help assist with their music program. These two jobs (teacher and organist) demonstrate Schmitt’s service and commitment to our parish and community. This beloved father and grandfather will be missed by all and remembered forever. After reading the pamphlet from Mr. Schmitt’s memorial Mass, I wanted to share the beautiful poem chosen by his family to celebrate his life. A Beautiful Life A beautiful life That came to an end, He died as he lived, Everyone’s friend. In our hearts a memory Will always be kept, Of one we loved, and Will never forget. Thank you for your service, musical talent and dedication to St. Francis de Sales Parish! Rest in peace ~ Herman Michael Schmitt June 14, 1933 - December 28, 2019

A Great Week at the World Champions Karate Center Two rank promotions took place this week at The World Champions Karate Center. The PRE-K students couldn’t wait to show their techniques, knowledge of Karate, and their ability to focus. They moved up and down the mat in synch, executing various punching, blocking and kicking combinations. Their efforts were rewarded with Pre-K ranks of yellow through purple belt.

In addition, the older students fulfilled their requirements of Karate Knowledge, Kihon (basic and advanced techniques), and Kata (Forms). This promotion graded students from Yellow through Green Karate ranks. The students and parents were very excited with their progress. Check out the program at WCKC, 114-04 Beach Channel Drive.
