Game On For Super Specials By Katie McFadden

Sunday’s the day! The annual Patriots Bowl! At least, that’s what it might be considered in recent years. While some may be reluctant to watch the New England Patriots in yet another Super Bowl, at least it’s a good excuse to eat junk food and drink. Rockaway is here for those who want to get into the spirit of the game and celebrate. The big game will kick off at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 3 and will be broadcast on CBS. This year, the Patriots will take on the Los Angeles Rams. Besides the game, there will be commercials galore, a halftime performance by Maroon 5, and plenty of snack breaks, whether eating at home or out and about. Still need some grub for that game day party at home? Local caterers have got you covered. Boardwalk Pizzeria is running game day specials for two large plain pies or one large pie and 20 wings for $30.99. You can also order three-foot heroes. Board-

walk offers free delivery around town, including to Breezy Point, so they can bring the party to you. Call 347-619-8002 to place your orders. Want something a little more for a bigger party? RBQ’s has part packages like $199 for ribs, wings, chicken, brisket, mac and cheese, salad and corn bread, which feeds 1015 people. They also have threefoot ($100) and six-foot ($200) hero packages that come with wings and slaw. Call 718-3187427 to place your order. Cuisine By Claudette has catering packages including a Game Day

They also have options available a la carte. Call 718-945-5511 to place your orders. There may also still be time to order from Pico, which is having catering specials on honey chipotle, cumin ginger vinaigrette or hot wings by the half or full tray. Email picorbny. events@gmail.com to inquire. MeatUp Grill in Riis Park is taking orders for their MeatUp Towers stocked with mouthwatering burgers, loaded fries and onion rings, plus their full menu. They’ll deliver by kickoff. Call 708-632-8871 to order. Want to get out for the day? Plenty of local bars and restaurants are holding specials during the game. In Breezy Point, the BayHouse will have $3 domestic beers and $4 imports, 50 cent wings and plenty of other cheap party eats to keep you full as you cheer on your team.

The Hot Shot Get $200 off the O-Shot! Only $1,000

In Rockaway, head to RBQ’s on Beach 98th for their Big Game Party. For $55, you get unlimited canned beer, appetizers and a pig roast starting at 6 p.m. and through the game. For $50 per person, Community House will have an unlimited buffet and beer special from 6 p.m. until the end of the game. Jameson’s Pub will be running their typical football Sunday special of half-priced drinks and appetizers during the game. The Belle Harbor Yacht Club is hosting its annual Big Game party in the member’s lounge. There will be food, drinks and 100/ 50 pool action. Bad Bets and Good I think a couple of dear friends were trying to torture me recently. Ya see, scratch-off lottery tickets are such a good idea to give to people. But if you are the recipient do not, do not, bother doing any scratching. You will lose and then end up annoyed that you’ve got nothing but lottery ticket dust. You’ll curse your lousy luck and then grumble about how hard the cards are to read or figure out. Wait, match what? What are those symbols? Is that a loaf of bread or a gold brick? I need how many matches? Give me a magnifying glass. Some games require a 12thgrade reading level while making you feel like you’ve just eked your way out of fifth. Nothing makes you feel dumber than re-reading the instructions on a scratch-off card. Well, except for re-reading it a third and fourth time. You’re bound to get more than a little annoyed at the whole rigged New York State Lottery. I even have to fight the urge to be a little annoyed at the gift-givers — what are they giving me these bad luck things for? They trying to make me feel dumb — and unlucky? Of course, I sometimes give lottery scratch-offs as gifts but I don’t mean it as torture. I figure my luck’s so bad the only way my tickets can win is if I give them to someone else. I figure every time a friend has changed their phone number or moved, it’s because I gave them a winning lottery ticket.

Although I’m getting so old, my odds are getting better. I’d swear they rig the thing so Win For Life really means Win For Months. And speaking of old, one thing I never win is the Graybeards Pot o’ Gold raffle, but I’m gonna keep trying. We hear about how the state lottery money is supposed to help education. Yeah, right. But the Graybeards run a raffle and raise money so they can turn around and give to those in need. The organization is almost twenty years old, having started after 9/11. The Graybeards, I’m happy to say, are homegrown and still vigorous. At the annual dinner dance last Saturday night, the group’s president, Joe Keenan, read a list of those the Graybeards helped in the past year. It was pretty awesome. Because the event is fun and a great chance to meet old friends and make some new ones, it’s easy to forget why you’re there, which is to help fund the group and its efforts. A scholarship, money to tide someone over, an emergency cash gift. These things can make all the difference for people. Now, I might get a little jealous of who wins the big pot, but I know the bigger the pot, the better it is for people in need. So, here’s a big tip of the hat to the guys (and ladies) who make the big night happen. I’m no gambler but The Graybeards? They’re people you can bet on. And I’m lucky to know them.

ROCKAWAY RALLIES AROUND ELDERLY DEMENTIA PATIENT By Katie McFadden

Can you spare some time? On Tuesday, January 29, a woman named Jennifer Ferrando reached out to Rockaway residents and put out a request on the Friends of Rockaway Beach Facebook page for volunteers to visit her mother, Barbara Ferrando, in Rockaway’s Promenade Nursing Facility. As Jennifer Ferrando is currently living in Poland, without the means to make trips back to Rockaway, she turned to locals, asking them to consider paying her mother a visit, as her mother is 82, alone, and living with dementia. Ferrando’s concerns for her mother’s well-being grew after her father, who was living in Promenade with her mother for the last three years, recently died, leaving her mother with no one nearby. The family had lived in a one-bedroom apartment in Bay Ridge for several decades, but the conditions of the apartment led to Ferrando’s parents being placed in Promenade in 2015.

Ferrando explained some of her mother’s other struggles over the years, including being diagnosed with cancer at age 42 and having a double colorectal and bladder operation. As dementia set in, her father’s despair grew. “I don’t think he could take much more,” she said. “Now she’s in this home with no friends, no family. Life isn’t fair, but I am trying to find her some happiness. I was her happiness, but now I’m not here for

her, which has made me terribly depressed. I wish I had the funds to hire a companion but I don’t,” Jennifer said, explaining that she moved to Poland with her husband when he got a job, and she needs to take out loans to afford the flight to New York. Due to her situation, Ferrando put out a request for others to keep her mother company. “She is all alone with no visits. I live in Poland and cannot visit much. She is a very sweet lady who loves old music played to her and a lollipop. Any help would be greatly appreciated!” she said. After Ferrando’s initial post, Rockaway quickly rallied and the support came through strong. Dozens of people offered to visit, including some who already have family members at Promenade, local nurses and other neighbors. Local car salesman Jerry Rea even offered to give people a ride to and from the nursing facility if they want to visit. (Rea can be reached at 718-318-1200.) Ferrando was blown away by

the response. “I just want to again express my blessings to each and every one of you and your loved ones. It has showed me how wonderful the Rockaway community is! The overwhelming responses were hard to believe, such generous people,” Jennifer said. “I posted the same message in Bay Ridge Friends where I grew up and where my parents grew up, and I got maybe a few responses, but Rockaway, God bless this beautiful community. I realize everyone on here has their own problems, I am not the only one who has a sad story. I know many of you may also have, but you all have eased my anxiety a little and made me wake up, for once, being grateful that I decided to post this feed. I never thought people cared so much!” If any others are willing to visit, Barbara Ferrando can be found on the fourth floor of Promenade (140 Beach 114th Street). The facility can be reached at 718-9454600. Jennifer Ferrando can be reached through her husband’s Facebook page: Tim Bishop.

***** The brutal cold on Thursday forced us to hold off on some deliveries until Friday. The email version, however, went out as usual on Thursday morning. Please sign up at RockawayTimes. com (just click on Subscribe) or send a request to Mail@Rockaway-Times.com. It’s free! And nobody gets frostbite! ***** It’s not just Rockaway. Restaurants and bars are dead all over. According to Grubstreet. com, Dry January is a thing all over. One Queens bartender said, “Things are dead. Like dead-dead.” But the article emphasized that no matter how bleak, business always bounces back. Hmmm… we wonder if Dry January is the reason the Super Bowl moved to February?

***** By the way, this is probably best left to Sean McVeigh (the factologist), not the coach in the Super Bowl who goes by Sean McVay, but did you know….The Super Bowl was played in January for the first 35 years. The game has been played in February since 2002. And also by the way, flip through our pages for catering and restaurant specials this Sunday. ***** The City is looking to further reduce childhood exposure to lead. The Mayor announced LeadFreeNYC, which will target “every apartment, every lead source” within 24 months. For the first time, rented one- and two-family homes will be required to get inspections annually. It requires landlords to have the annual inspections done in any apartment that houses a child younger than six years old. We will provide more specific information as it becomes available. ***** The Mayor said he expects to “have an important announcement quite soon” regarding a stopgap beach replenishment

that will go a long way in avoiding beach closures like last summer. We believe such an announcement will be in the next week or two. ***** Longtime Brooklyn DA Joe Hynes who lived in Breezy Point died on Tuesday at the age of 83. Hynes was the special prosecutor in the New Park Pizza - Howard Beach case and other high profile trials. ***** Here’s another reminder that the annual Rockaway Times Photo Contest will be bigger than ever in 2019. Start sorting through your great shots now (and keep an eye out for photo opportunities!) ***** It rained like crazy last week and we were blessed with a double rainbow. We hate to be a spoiler but such rainbows are not considered rare. HowStuffWorks, a science-based website, says they occur often but adds: "This doesn't mean that double rainbows aren't double cool, or double pretty or double awe-inspiring.”

Page 7 ***** Assemblywoman Stacey Amato presented the Rockaway Beach Broadcasting Company (RBBC) with a NYS Assembly Citation honoring them as her 2019 January Small Business of the Month. RBBC launched on August 1, 2018 and was founded by Bryan Doremus, Matt Preis (aka Max Power), Caitlin Moss, and Frisco Granda. RBBC has a “mission to promote everything local; musicians and artists of all kinds, small businesses, events around town, and anything else that contributes to our community in a positive way.” ***** Ten candidates have qualified for the First Official Debate for the 2019 Public Advocate Special Election to be televised on NY1 and on their website, Wednesday, February 6 at 7 p.m. City Councilman Eric Ulrich cracked the top 10 and will be joined by Melissa-Mark Viverito, Daniel O’Donnell, Jumaane Williams and others, who met a fundraising and spending benchmark and other criteria under the Campaign Finance Act.

Page 8 Ulrich Will Win & Lose Dear Editor: The field of 23 candidates for NYC Public Advocate is now effectively down to 10 who qualified for matching funds and an invitation to the TV debates. Seven others who may appear on the ballot will not have the resources to compete. Nine of the 10 candidates are registered Democrats. Councilman Eric Ulrich is the only registered Republican to be part of the contest. Although this is a nonpartisan election, we can assume that most voters will be aware of the party affiliation. In previous elections for Public Advocate, the Democratic vote far exceeded the Republican vote. In 2009, Bill de Blasio defeated Alex T. Zablocki 679,366 to 164,090. In 2017, Letitia James defeated Juan Carlos Polanco 752,475 to 162,781. Each Democratic victory was more than four to one. In 2001, 2005 and 2013, the Republicans didn't even put up a candidate for Public Advo-

cate. With nine active and well financed Democrats running in the special election on February 26, dividing the vote, it will be difficult for Eric Ulrich to lose. As the results of the special election are counted on February 26, the leading Democratic candidates will begin a primary campaign to choose one Democratic candidate for the November election. If the Democrats choose a candidate worthy of the support of most Democratic voters, that candidate should win the two-year remainder of Tish James’ term as Public Advocate. In the next few months, the national Republican leadership will have to decide how long to blindly follow the erratic behavior of Donald Trump. Will we have another shutdown of government services or involvement in an unwanted foreign war? Will we break with our traditional allies and support dictators around the world? Will respected Republicans come forward, and as Senator Barry Goldwater carried the message

to Richard Nixon, tell Donald Trump it is time to go? As Public Advocate, Eric Ulrich will be responsible for monitoring city services. As the highest elected Republican in New York City and the only elected Republican outside of Staten Island, he will be asked about the growing crisis in Washington. Will he answer, “I am an American before I am a Republican,” or will he silently follow the lead of a President he never supported? Will he join with such leaders as John Kasich, James Mattis, Bob Corker and Mitt Romney if they try to restore a system with two respected political parties? As voters, we can ask our elected officials to act with courage, not just to get reelected, but to help make America great again. Norman Silverman

Peninsula Proposal Dear Editor: Two items, if I may. First, may I reproduce the excellent editorial (with proper credit) by Glenn DiResto about the Peninsula Hospital site on

The Rockaway Times the Bayswater Civic website, as well as my own site (SolutionsNY. NYC)? (Editor’s Note: Of Course!) Also, below are my quick questions on the plans for the site (no particular order): • Parking. Should be the same ratio of parking spots to apartments as in Rockaway as a whole. Probably something like two parking spaces per apartment. • There should be food shopping (supermarket) before any apartments are occupied. • Can St. John’s Hospital handle the additional residents of Downtown Far Rockaway and this site? By this, I mean as a hospital, not various outpatient facilities and offices. • What is the impact on NYPD and FDNY? (including EMS). • Will actual schools be built along with the housing, or only “in the future” as was promised with Arverne By the Sea and never built? • What is the effect of the population increase (20 percent?) on emergency evacuation Continued on page 9

food. Also, many Pakistani girls would come to school without “We make a living by what underwear. I was horrified! we get; we make a life by what How are we going to sit togethwe give,” Winston Churchill er cross-legged in a classroom, once said, and local Carlotta Peters-Bulzomi embodies that sentiment, as she’s started her own Pay It Forward group in Rockaway. Her spirited Facebook posts have obviously hit the right nerve, as she already has five local ladies on board with her mission, plus scores of others who join in her efforts to simply help others — by paying it forward. Peters-Bulzomi, a self-described, “Brooklyn girl,” has lived with her husband, Michael; and daughter, Gigi, in Neponsit for the last 16 years. The former Head Start teacher, now local school crossing guard, makes it her mission to not just help locals in need, but has galvanized quite a following in the community. not just lose our home, but my husband, who owns Sea Traveler's Marina in Brooklyn, was basically brought back to square one. The school, where I worked, was destroyed. My daughter’s school here in Rockaway was destroyed. However, like everyone, we worked hard, not to just resurrect life as we know it, but we were determined to do the same for others,” Peters-Bulzomi said. One poignant example of how Peters-Bulzomi’s huge heart spurred on Rockaway to pay it forward was with Ceasar Bates, the gregarious and talented piano player, who is usually perched in front Stop And Shop on Beach Channel Drive. She said that she fell in love with the man’s talent and spirit, and after speaking with him, realized that he was in need, and wanted to help. “We started talking and he was very honest about his story. He said that in his heyday, he was in a Motown band that played at the Apollo, every-

THURSDAY, JANUARY 31, 2019 where! The way he plays, his personality, his voice, he’s the real deal! However, he related that hard knocks took the form of drugs for not just him, but most of the band members, and well, most of us know where that usually lands addicts. “I wanted to help him get back on his feet. I asked him where he lived, and what he needed. To be honest, he was really taken aback, but I was determined. He lived in a tiny windowless, closet-size apartment with no heat or any basic amenities like a fridge. I put out a post on Facebook, and the response was astronomical,” Peters-Bulzomi said. She told folks that Ceasar needed a fridge, kitchenware like a blender and microwave, a mattress, a keyboard, blankets, a jacket, and other items. “The response I got was overwhelming! Everyone knew about this black elderly, polite gentleman who played amazing music in front of Stop and Shop. Everyone jumped in to donate, and even helped

Page 11

me deliver the items. I always stress that the items don’t have to be new, just something you don’t need anymore. As long as it’s in good condition, that’s great. That’s how to pay it forward. Gifting someone something you may no longer need or even have never used,” she said. Peters-Bulzomi was even featured on a NY1’s Around The Boroughs segment about her pay it forward initiative with Bates. “I was so shocked! Never expected that, but, if it inspired others to help someone in their community, that was the ultimate reward. I was just so happy when I invited Ceasar to play at my family’s Christmas Eve party. Now that video went viral!” But Peters-Bulzomi’s efforts extend beyond Bates. Last October, the local woman was able to raise over $3,000 for the Maimonides Breast Cancer Center, which was inspired by her cousin, Meredith Tomassi, who was fighting the disease. “I do this event selling everything imaginable, including furni-

ture I refurbish myself. Even Ciro’s and Beach Bagel donate food. The entire community really comes out with items, of which all sale proceeds go towards the fund. The local Reinhardt family told me about Maimonides, and I was so honored to fundraise for their breast cancer research efforts,” Peters-Bulzomi said. Peters-Bulzomi is not only inspiring locals, but setting good examples for her family. After seeing the NY1 segment, her daughter, Gigi, shared her thoughts on her mother’s efforts on Facebook, saying, “Well mom, you didn’t get on your dream show, Flea Market Flip or Shark Tank with some crazy invention. But u made someone else’s dream come true. I am so proud of my mom. She is the kindest person in the world. I love u. By the way your Brooklyn accent was toned down a bit. LOL!” For more info on how you too can join Peters-Bulzomi’s Pay It Forward group, inbox her through Facebook Messenger @ Carlotta Peters.

How Blac Rabbit Hopped Into the Spotlight By Ryan Schwach

Rahiem and Amiri Taylor, two parts of the increasingly popular band, Blac Rabbit, are not what comes to mind when imagining the background of a psychedelic rock band that has earned its fame from Beatles covers in the platforms of the New York City subway system, but that hasn’t stopped their rise from buskers working for a plane ticket, to viral video stars and guests on daytime television. The Taylor twins, identical and 24 years old, did little but sing and do musical theater in terms of music as kids growing up in the Bed-Stuy section of Brooklyn, whose previous contributions to the music industry have been the likes of hip-hop royalty, Biggie and Jay-Z. When the Taylors were teenagers, their grandparents bought them a copy of The Beatles: Rock band video game for Christmas, which allows players to mimic the prolific four-piece’s songs using plastic instruments.

“We just fell in love with the Beatles” Amiri said, “and just their love for music.” From a video game in their teens, the stone kept on rolling. For their 16th birthday, they bought their first instruments from Guitar Center, a bass for Rahiem, also known as simply Rah, in the vein of Paul McCartney, and a guitar for Amiri, mimicking John Lennon. They started to learn Beatles tunes and various other psychedelic-like rock groups, and even began dabbling into original song writing. Amiri talked about a joke song he wrote called, “Trinket Man” about a man who has toys and trinkets around the outside of his home, then Rah remembered he wrote a song around the same time called, “Crazy Man.” “Maybe we’ll revive those,” Amiri joked. The idea for the name “Blac Rabbit” came from a small doll their uncle got while touring Russia as a jazz musician, and thought it as a good play on words from a favorite song of theirs; Jefferson Airplane’s

“White Rabbit,” as for the missing letter “K”, Rah likes to joke that it’s copyrighted. Their first busking experience came working to raise money for plane tickets to visit their mother who was staying in Puerto Rico. They played The Beatles of course, as well as Radiohead and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. “In like three days we had the money,” said Rah. In their teens, not long after they first began playing music, they moved to Far Rockaway. As they got older, they began to look into regular jobs, applying to trade schools, figuring they’d just wind up being broke, and applying to work at a supermarket. “After a while, we started busking because we were sick of working there.” Rah said In January of 2018, they caught the eye of filmmaker Nicolas Heller, otherwise known as New York Nico, who is the self-proclaimed, “Unofficial talent scout of New York City,” who shot a video of them busking on the L train and uploaded it to his In-

stagram account. “The first day it was at a few thousand views, and we were like a few thousand views...cool,” they said. In the next few days the video would hit viral status, with people tagging Jimmy Fallon and Ellen DeGeneres in the comments. Soon, they were contacted by Ellen’s staff to come on the show. “They really wanted bubbly personalities, we didn't even think we were gonna make it on,” Amiri said, “We’re not bubbly TV personality like guys.” But they agreed. So in March of last year, they flew out to Los Angeles and appeared on The Ellen Show, were interviewed by the host and played The Beatles tune “8 Days a Week.” Although they explained that the experience was a blast, they admitted how nerve wracking it was going from smaller shows to a big stage. “Even though Ellen was an amazing experience, you feel this pressure of perfectionism, like is my shirt on properly?” Continued on page 13

Amiri said. “It’s one of the scariest things I ever did,” added Rah. Looking past Ellen, Blac Rabbit has toured parts of the United States, and last summer toured parts of Europe, including Liverpool and the famous Cavern Club, where The Beatles themselves played in their early years. “That was incredible,” Amiri said. “It was probably one of the most historic things we have ever done,” added Rah. They even got the opportunity to recreate the famous Abbey Road album cover. “We got a lot of cools stays in Europe, they know how to treat a band,” Amiri said. “Overall, even though Europe was a blast, I think I like touring America better, it’s a little easier, you just get in the van and you’re good,” said Rah. “Flying has never been something I really enjoy, I don’t think anybody does.” In between treading The Beatles’ European footsteps and playing daytime television, Blac Rabbit still plays small Rock-

THURSDAY, JANUARY 31, 2019 away venues including the boardwalk and PICO on 129th Street. “It’s so much more personable and intimate. I’m glad we are at a point where we break it up between big shows and playing PICO,” Rah said. The brothers moved to Rockaway in their teenage years, and have been here ever since. “I really like being in Rockaway, there is a sense of community and a sense of family you don’t get anywhere else,” Amiri said. “The vibe is really laid back here, and it really rubbed off on me.” Of course, Blac Rabbit is a lot more than two guys playing Beatles covers. They play with drummer, Patrick Jones, who they have been with for years, Josh Lugo on bass, and sometimes guitar, and newcomer multi-instrumentalist, Justin Jagbir. Outside of Beatles covers, Blac Rabbit has released several pieces of original music, “It’s definitely more what we want to push,” Amiri says about the music, adding that they’re mostly going for the psychedelic dream pop genre, akin to that of

Page 13

Tame Impala and MGMT. Their self-titled EP has six tracks and was released last year. The track “All Good” has 25,600 listens on Soundcloud. As for their writing process, they say they both have subtle differences to their process and work, but they have similar enough tastes that the songs mesh together. “He’ll throw a song into the pot, then I’ll throw a song into the pot,” explains Amiri. “I’ve sat on ideas for almost a year before I could think of a perfect lyric for the perfect vocal melody.” They also said

that most of the original stuff they have now, they have been working on since high school. Going forward, the group is currently working on their first studio album called, “Interstella,” which is set for release in the spring. Want to catch them live? Blac Rabbit is headlining the next Bugalou Music Series show at St. Camillus Springman Hall. The show kicks off at 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 9. winter event. With plenty of raffles, art, music, dancing, food, drinks and fun, this is an event you won’t want to fish miss. Each winter, the Rockaway Mermaid Brigade, the masterminds behind the new hit parade that ends the summer season on the boardwalk in late September, hosts a prom as a way to fundraise for the parade. With An Army of Fun being this year’s theme, this year’s party will have a military vibe, so think sergeant siren, a Navy captain, a Marine mammal, or even come dressed as a torpedo. However, any creative nautical garb is welcome, or perhaps dust off the old prom dress or suit, or simply come as yourself, but make sure to wear your dancing shoes. No matter what your costume choice is for the night, you’re bound to be dressed with a smile at this fun-filled event. While the parade is open to all, the Prom is when the

older mermaids come out to play as it is a 21 and over event. Each $40 ticket gets you four hours of an open bar, light bites, DJ Paddy Tubz and live music by Indaculture to dance to, a silent auction full of art pieces from local artists, and raffles galore, with chances to win amazing prizes generously donated from nearby businesses. The prizes are piling up, but so far, donations have been made by Pico, Whit’s End, Bungalow Bar, Gina A ., who donated a massage, an express facial and eyebrow shaping package, a month of free yoga from Yoga Vida, a Brooklyn Born Chocolate collection and much more. From The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance RWA LIVING CLASSROOM WORKSHOPS By Sydney Randall, RWA Living Classroom Educator

During the 2018-2019 school year, the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) has been teaming up with Lawrence Woodmere Academy (LWA), a private school in Long Island, to discuss marine science and environmental conservation. Students ranging from kindergarten to eighth grade invited RWA educators into their classrooms to learn about various topics through experiential-and task-based projects. The students began with a crash course in marine science, complete with an upclose look at oysters from Jamaica Bay. After some initial trepidation, the students were excited to observe the oysters and learn how they are used as natural water filters in New York Harbor, gaining a new appreciation for these seden-

tary organisms. Springing from this marine science base, the students took a critical look at the harmful side effects of big agriculture and polluted runoff by defining and examining the ecologic and economic effects of algal blooms in the U.S. The students left with a deeper understanding of the challenges that face marine environments all over the world.

Meanwhile, K-3 students spent their time learning about the pounds of plastic floating in their oceans and what they can do to stop plastic pollution, while helping to protect the many creatures that make the oceans their home. These students drew colorful pictures depicting their concern for the oceans to send to New York policy makers, proving that you are

never too young to advocate for your community and environment. Finishing up the sessions, they each made a reusable tote bag from old T-shirts to use in lieu of plastic bags at the store. Most recently, the LWA students have learned about wind and solar energy, creating a mock wind turbine, and a functional solar water purifier, while debating the functionality and practicality of the two energy forms. As the weather warms, the students will begin venturing outside to learn about sustainable gardening and horticulture. These lessons give crucial context to students as our environment continues to change, giving them the tools and skillset to be advocates and environmentalists. For more information regarding the workshops with LWA and with the Living Classroom program at RWA, please contact Program Coordinator Juli Schroeger at programs@rwalliance.org.

SLICE OF LIFE By Beth Hanning Slow Down In January of 2017, I wrote a column about the outrage of the State Police patrolling Cross Bay Boulevard in Broad Channel and parts of the Rockaways. People were furious that the State Police were here and ticketing people. I clearly stated that if you drive within the speed limit, you should not have a problem. I have been guilty of driving too fast when in a rush, but something changed for me in October of 2016. I was driving to school and when I was about to turn left off of Cross Bay Boulevard, I

saw one of my students lying in the street. After being taken to Jamaica Hospital, she was pronounced dead. Since then, I have been on a bit of a crusade about speeding. And my crusade has spread to my family as well. My father has given up driving because every time he drove, he claimed he felt uncomfortable with people driving too close to him and honking when he did not proceed fast enough. My daughter works on Beach Channel Drive at the Prudential office and last week when the stoplight was out on Beach

Channel Drive and Beach 116th Street by Duane Reade, she was unsure how she was going to get home because the cars were driving by so fast and she could not get across the street. Another horrible accident happened last week and the young man, who attends Scholars’ Academy, was attempting to exit his yellow school bus when a car went around the bus on the RIGHT side, yes you heard that right, the side where the children exit. He was hit by the car and broke his leg in two places and is in a cast from his ankle to his hip. When are people going to slow down? This young man is lucky to be alive. If it were possibly a difference in a second, he may have been killed. Now Cross Bay Boulevard is not the only place I see people driving haphazardly. My favorite is at least once a week, a car goes around me in the left lane and I assume they are making a U-turn. Nope, they are going through the

red light and going through the turning lane to get around the people who follow the rules of driving. Newport Avenue, as I have said many times, is also the practice for the Indy 500. Without many streetlights, people use it to speed as quickly as possible to get to and from Beach 116th Street. So, I am begging you all to please leave a few minutes early and slow down. I know some people will not be happy with this, but we need more tickets to be distributed from the State Police and the 100th Precinct. The day after the young boy was hit, a squad car sat by the accident spot. I doubt the exact incident is going to happen again. Actively patrol. I know you can sit on Newport and Beach 129th and get offenders all day long, who do not stop at the stop signs. Try to drive everywhere as if your children were playing in the streets and/or exiting school buses. Have a great week everyone and SLOW DOWN.

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Surgery? PT? One of the most common orthopedic surgeries is arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM), more commonly known as a knee scope. In 2014, it was estimated that 516,800 APMs were performed in the United States, and in 2006, it was estimated that the global cost of this procedure was $44 billion. The meniscus is the cartilaginous pad that is in the middle of every joint in the body. The meniscus prevents bone-on-bone contact in the joint which causes pain, inflammation, and deformation. Tearing of the meniscus may occur as part of the normal degenerative (osteoar-

thritic) process of the knee and occurs in up to 60 percent of those over age 50, who have not had prior knee pain or injury. The meniscus has no blood supply and so, once torn, it cannot repair itself. Because physical therapy (PT) has positive short-term effects on knee pain and function, the benefit of surgical removal of the torn meniscus as compared to PT has remained unclear. Several smaller studies have been published comparing APM to PT or sham surgery (like a placebo, the scope enters the knee, but no cartilage is removed) and they found no difference in benefit of pain

and function between the two groups. A few months ago, a larger study from Amsterdam was published that compared PT to APM for improvement in joint pain and function. The study looked at over 300 participants with non-obstructive meniscal tears of the knee. Non-obstructive refers to a meniscal tear where the torn part of the meniscus does not enter the knee joint. If a piece of the meniscus enters the joint, it may physically interfere with the function and flexion of the joint. If this occurs, then surgery is required to remove the torn piece. The participants were randomized into two groups and followed for 24 months. After 24 months, the participants self-reported knee function using a standardized form called the International Knee Documentation Committee Subjective Knee Form. Using the patient-reported knee function information, the study found no difference in knee pain and function between the group randomized

Page 27 to PT versus the group randomized to surgery. However, 29 percent of the PT group did have delayed surgery, demonstrating that not all patients randomized to the PT group were satisfied with their results. The results of the study do lend credence to the growing opinion that older individuals with degenerative meniscal tears may be able to use PT alone to improve their knee pain and function and avoid, or at least delay, surgery. It is important to remember that these results apply only to those individuals with small meniscal tears. Those with larger tears, bucket-handle tears (the cartilage is flipped over on itself ), and obstructing tears most likely will require surgical correction. Waking Up to This Day Some days are easier to wake up to than other days. Recently, I took my yearly trip down to Rincon, Puerto Rico and I must tell you, it is really easy to wake up on a warm, beautiful tropical island surrounded by water. Everyone is so laid back and easy going. The tranquil environment allows you to be stress-free without a care in the world. Dwelling in the present moment comes without difficulty. Counting your blessings is organic. Most certainly makes you think twice about living on a tropical island.

That being said, there is no place like home. Yes, there are more responsibilities and things to do, but the truth is if you surround yourself with loving people and create a comfortable space to live, you will be just as happy, or almost as content as the person living on an island. On my vacation I read a powerful book, “Waking Up to This Day” by Paula D’Arcy. Many times, I had to put it down because the content touched my heart and I needed to absorb it slowly. In fact, I have had this

book for years but couldn’t read it. D'Arcy teaches us how to wake up to this day and all that life has to offer us. There is so much suffering in one’s life and yet, we are encouraged to move on because this is all part of life. “Our function is not to live forever but to live in this moment.” -Joko Beck. Why is it that so many of us cannot live in the present moment but live from the past and the future? D'Arcy writes this book after losing her husband and 22-month-old baby girl named Sarah in a car accident caused by a drunk driver. She is obviously devastated by her losses and does not want to live but somehow, she manages to break through her sorrow and move on. She never forgets but says it is the love from her past that carried her on. She begins a new career writing books and speaking nationwide to large groups of people about waking up to this day. She is an inspirational writer and speaker who has turned a negative into a positive, teaching

The Rockaway Times people how to work from a place of love. Delving deep into my family history and all the losses I have experienced in life, I realize it was the tremendous love that supported my will to live happily in this life. I grew up in a loving, compassionate home. This would be the glue that kept me together during times of loss. Sadness never fully leaves you, but you learn to live life one day at a time. Whatever you are doing and whoever you choose to spend your time with, is life itself. There is much suffering in life but do not attach yourself to your grief, instead perhaps find a way to live a life worth living. “We are the night ocean filled with glints of light. We are the space between the fish and the moon, while we sit here together.” ~Rumi. I am in love with life. The birds, the ocean, the mountains, the lakes, the rivers, the people, my family. I hope if and when you suffer from loss, you learn to heal by living in the present moment, listening to the birds singing and seeing life with all its beauty.

PHEFFER AMATO HONORS LOCAL RADIO CO. AS ‘SMALL BUSINESS OF THE MONTH’

This week, Rockaway Beach Broadcasting Company (RBBC) was awarded a NYS Assembly Citation by Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, honoring the local radio station as her 2019 January Small Business of the Month. RBBC launched on August 1, 2018 and was founded by Bryan Doremus, Matt Preis (aka Max Power), Caitlin Moss, and Frisco Granda. RBBC’s mission is to promote everything local; musicians and artists of all kinds, small businesses, events around town, and anything else that positively contributes to the community. “RBBC is a vehicle for exporting the cultural and artistic talent in the Rockaway peninsula to areas outside, providing people a glimpse into what make us so special,” said Pheffer Amato. “For each artist, small business, or organization, RBBC promotes

our thriving culture, and we’re grateful that this outlet exists, and are proud to have RBBC in our community!” “We at RBBC are so honored to have been chosen for this month’s small business award. We’ve always been motivated by promoting positivity in our community through the arts and events that we promote and share, and to receive recognition for that means a lot to us and will drive us to continue to grow,” Granda said. The Literary Chick Review: What Matters Most Is How Well You Walk Through The Fire By Marilyn Macron, Esq. aka Maria Cowhey

Marble cold, red-lipped Fate, like Swinburne’s Delores, has never ached with a heart. Sometimes words of advice and encouragement are needed. The Literary Chick has her Go-To Self Help Books for when she’s a Chick In The Dumps. We’ve mentioned The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius (see The Rockaway Times, October 18, 2018). Another is What Matters Most Is How Well You Walk Through the Fire by Charles Bukowski. Born Heinrich Karl Bukowski in Andernach, Germany, Bukowski grew up in California with a frequently unemployed, violent father and a sorrowful and ineffectual mother. Schoolmates ridiculed him for his German ancestry and his extreme case of acne. As an adult, he became a raging alcoholic and gambler, and also either a ladies’ man or a misogynist, depending on whom you spoke to. And all along he wrote – prose, poetry, essays, mostly about the type of people who frequent bars and racetracks. He made himself the bard of society’s margins, and in doing so became a cult hero. Mickey Rourke played Bukowski in the 1987 movie Barfly. What Matters Most Is How Well You Walk Through the Fire is a posthumous collection of Bukowski’s poetry. Bukowski is among the more accessible poets, in that his poems border on prose, and that was deliberate. In Christmas Poem To A Man In Jail he writes, “I don’t like poetry for example,

so I write mine the way I like to read it”. The poems range from actual stories drawn from experience of his childhood and of betting parlors, of poetry readings and of benders. Dissipation became part of his image (his publicist warned him not to let his readers know when he stopped drinking), but few poets can match him for economy and precision. This is not to say he romanticized the hard life he mostly chose – the drinking, the gambling, or the writing. In Combat Primer, after listing the trials faced by a slew of famous literary names, he writes, “it’s that kind of war: creation kills, many go mad, Some lose their way and can’t do it anymore, a few make it to old age, a few make money, some starve (like Vallejo), it’s that kind of war: casualties everywhere.” Bukowski worked long mind-numbing hours as a postal worker, detailed in his book, Post Office, before walking out one day to Godknows-what he would find. In Wasted, he warns against dying with regret, “too often the people complain that they have done nothing with their lives and then they wait for somebody to tell them that this isn’t so. look, you’ve done this and that and you’ve done that and that’s something you really think so? of course. but

As a youngster growing up in the 1950s in the small Irish enclave of Woodside, Queens, I can remember my father taking me in tow, at least once a month, and walking down Skillman Avenue to "Paul's" barbershop for a haircut. The shop had its own unique smell, as well with the smell of cherry, wintergreen,

apple, and butternut-flavored pipe and tobacco smoke mixed with the scent of hair tonics, pomades, oils, and neck powders. The moment a man stepped inside, he was enveloped in the warm and welcoming familiarity. Even as a young child, I could sense that a barbershop was a cool hangout for men and their sons. In retrospect, I now realize that our monthly trips to the barbershop had, over time, become a family tradition. Many men have been going to the same barber all their life and have introduced their sons to the same chair and the same barber. It was "a Guy's Place." No appointments at the barbershop. First come, first served, everyone else takes a chair and waits. Unlike Mom, Dad did not hover around me, inspecting and critiquing each and every snip of the barber's scissors. Dad simply grunted, "Make

sure you get the hair out of his eyes!" and then returned to his chair to read that day's newspaper. Of particular interest to me were the framed pictures of supposedly available haircut styles that hung on the wall featuring movie stars sporting various hairstyles. I remember once pointing to a picture of Elvis Presley having his hair cut upon entrance to the U.S. Army in 1958, and telling my father that's who I wanted to look like. My father almost doubled over laughing and telling me, "Paul is a Barber and cuts your hair. He's not a plastic surgeon and can't do a damn thing about your face!" As I grew older, "Paul" ultimately retired and his shop closed and I found myself getting haircuts by stylists at unisex chain salons, but the problem’s been that many of the people who work at salons are not trained barbers. They’re cosmetologists. The difference between the two can spell the difference between a dopey-looking haircut and a great one. A barber is trained to cut with clippers, the main tool in cutting a man’s hair. Cosmetologists, on the other hand, are trained to use scissors. Their training is also geared towards catering to women’s hair. They become experts in styling, coloring, and perming — things a man has no need for. Well, that's not exactly true. Back in the 1980s, my brain synapses must have been misfiring because I did go to a Supercuts salon to have my hair permed on a dare. I won the bet ($50,) but I spent the next six months walking around with a hat 24 hours a day in a failed attempt to avoid looking like a bad imitation of Mike Brady, the father from the Brady Bunch television series. That ended my experimentation with "stylists." Barbers, on the other hand, are interesting guys with interesting stories to tell. There is conversation about politics, cars, sports, and family. Guys read the newspaper and

comment on current events. In between the banter, jokes are told and laughs are had. And everyone is involved: the barbers, the customers getting their haircuts, and the customers waiting to get their haircut. Adding to the enjoyment is that a variety of men take part in the conversation; young, old, and middle-aged join in the mix. The problem I have stems from the fact that although my local barber, "Dino," has been cutting my hair for many years now, he didn't work out of a barber shop, but simply rented chair space in the various Broad Channel hair and nail salons through the years. Unfortunately, just over a year ago, Dino lost the rental space when Ella and David's Beauty Salon closed. Not ready to admit defeat, Dino managed to rent space nearby in a shop on Cross Bay Boulevard, where he set up his single barber chair, clippers, combs and other accoutrements of his trade. Did I mention that Dino's new space is located in the "Perfect Pet Spa," a dog grooming service? I still have to make sure I arrive to the shop early for a haircut because, as before, the locals start arriving at the shop right around 9 a.m. to have their hair washed, brushed and dried or simply to have their nails cut. It's not really as weird as it appears, but I am really getting annoyed with my beloved Grace's insistence that I start wearing a flea collar. Broad Channel. Why would you live anywhere else?
