Ferry Frozen! Winter Brings New Obstacle to Rockaway Route By Katie McFadden

The ferry is operating! The ferry isn’t operating! Nevermind, it’s back up again! That was the scenario on Tuesday, January 2 as the NYC Ferry faced a new obstacle for the new year—an icy Jamaica Bay. As temperatures continued to reach below freezing, Jamaica Bay started to succumb to the effects with icy patches forming throughout. The Rockaway ferry started the day off operating as normal, but by late Tuesday morning, the ice has surrounded the waters by the ferry landing at Beach 108th Street and NYC Ferry announced that the service would be suspended until further notice. Following the service disruption., NYC Ferry reached out to The Rockaway Times (RT) to provide an update. “Because of significant ice conditions around the Rockaway ferry landing, NYC Ferry service to and from Rockaway was temporarily suspended as

of 11:30am today,” a spokesperson said. “In response, NYC Ferry has deployed a tug boat to attempt to break the ice. If NYC Ferry determines that conditions are safe, ferry service will resume.” The Rockaway Times observed the ferry dock to see the tugboat going to work to clear the ice around the landing and by 2 p.m., NYC Ferry issued another update saying the ferry would resume normal operations with the 2:15 p.m. ferry leaving from Pier 11 in Manhattan. Normal service continued throughout the day. NYC Ferry says they are doing what they can to keep riders informed about such changes. “If service is ever changed or suspended, our dispatch team will make announcements at the landings being affected and a service alert will be posted on our website, app and social media platforms. If there is no change in our service and you see no alert has been issued, you can rest assured we are

operating normally on either a weekday or weekend schedule,” a spokesperson told The Rockaway Times. We inquired about how the city knows about the conditions at the Rockaway landing to determine if schedule changes need to occur. “Our crew can send us pictures of the landings and also, we work closely with the U.S. Coast Guard and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) to monitor the conditions. We use cameras as well that help us determine whether it is safe to continue to operate at the landing.” The Rockaway ferry wasn’t the only route affected by the deep freeze. Starting on New Year’s Day, Seastreak ferry, operating between Highlands, NJ and Manhattan, announced that service was suspended due to icy conditions. With the below freezing temperatures expected to continue into the weekend, ferry riders all around should brace themselves for further

disruptions due to ice. “Keep in mind, because this is a natural inconvenience, there is very little we can do about it other than to keep the safety of our riders in mind when dealing with the situation,” an NYC Ferry spokesperson said. “We appreciate everyone’s patience moving forward.” NYC Ferry seems to be doing the best it can with the circumstances. Before the RT went to press, the Rockaway ferry was spotted being led by a tugboat breaking through the ice ahead as the ferry continued its regular schedule on Wednesday morning. THE TIPPING POINT

Glad that’s over. The whole holiday gift-giving and what you’re supposed to tip so-and-so are traditions I can do without. Let’s start with tipping. The mailman, or letter carrier (which used to be the mailman), is easy. If they’re reliable and take care of your mail (and they don’t leave somebody else’s mail in your box on a regular basis), you’d be doing the right thing by giving them a card with a few bucks. That might be the easiest tip all year. You don’t have to tip the mailman who comes at 5:30 p.m. and leaves a bunch of mail for the guy

around the corner. But you got somebody good? A few bucks is the least you can do. Most people, with an ounce of awareness, know their regular letter carrier. Even if you work Monday through Friday, you’ll see your regular carrier on a Saturday from time to time. You know who to give a card to. But UPS and FedEx? I don’t know. Sanitation is tough. You might never see the men and women in green who take your trash away. And even if you do, you might not get to know a regular crew

and with recycling it gets even tougher. With a letter carrier you might even leave a card in your mailbox. But you can’t scotch tape a card with some cash in it to the top of your garbage can hoping the sanitation guys will find it. I know some you of tightwads and humbugs say you shouldn’t tip federal and city workers, but you’re really just looking for a reason to be cheap. If you were hauling trash in 20-degree weather, you’d be okay with taking a tip once in a while. Honest to God, a few decades ago, they’d ring your bell and hand you a Christmas card expecting you to give them a card back — albeit a slightly heavier one. But what about hairdressers or barbers, or any personal grooming types? Are we supposed to tip them? I know it’s fairly customary to give some extra dough for the holidays to those who make us nice and shiny, but shouldn’t they be the ones giving out the gifts? We give them business (i.e. money) all year. We’re the clients. Maybe we’ve got this backwards. They should be giving us the

Page 5 fruitcake. Though, I guess, it’d be pretty shameful getting out of the barber chair and putting your hand out for a gift. Imagine a guy in suit: Hey, shoeshine boy, great job. Got anything for me? Of course, there’s a couple of people in the neighborhood I can imagine doing that. And forget about the professional exchanges. What if a neighbor, co-worker, or friendly acquaintance shocks you with a gift? You didn’t get them anything. You never would have. But next year rolls around. You buy a just-in-case gift. You don’t really want to give them something, but if they hand something to you, this time you’ll be ready. You don’t want that same old awkward feeling. But it can still get weird. This time around they don’t give you anything. Which is fine. But then you start thinking, I wonder if they’re mad I didn’t get them anything last year. It’s an emotional tight wire, I tell ya. I’d like a tip—a tip about how and who to tip. Even tipping experts sometimes give you a “it depends.� I don’t need no stinkin’ depends. Glad it’s over.

***** We don’t know if congratulations or psychiatric care is in order for those who jumped in the ocean on New Year’s Day. It was brutally cold and a very low tide required running a long distance to be able to dive under (the official way to do it). It was so cold we even admire the fully-dressed photographers. Officially, the high for the day was 18 degrees. Last year’s high was 52! ***** Speaking of the cold (who isn’t?), the ferry is subject to service suspension because of ice in the bay. Tug boats have been used to assist. If you’re looking for service updates, download the NYC Ferry app and get email updates (and check your spam folder). Oh, and another cold fact: it was so cold in Canada, a zoo brought their penguins inside!

***** From the MTA: The Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge will be closed to traffic in both directions during overnight hours on weekdays from Tuesday, January 2, through Saturday morning, January 13. There will be no closures on weekend nights. During this time, all traffic will be detoured to the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., including the Q35 bus. The closures are necessary for upgrade work on the lift mechanism. ***** What weather? On Tuesday, we saw construction crews working on the coming medical center on Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 105th Street, and the condos on Beach 116th Street. tate hub, listed some predictions for the 2018 market. Among the things they cite: Transportation Changes Will Drive New Demand (people fed up with the subway look for other means). Rents Will Fall and Concessions Will Rise (uh, we’re pretty sure they mean Manhattan). Homes Under $1 Million Will See Heightened Competition (that’s happening on Rockaway’s west end). ***** Well, snowbirds don’t count and people are moving to Rockaway, but the rest of New York is another matter. The state is seeing an exodus of people. New York comes in third behind Illinois and New Jersey as states losing the most residents. Lots of people are heading to the Pacific northwest and plenty to the southeast. Vermont is the lone northeastern state with more people moving in than moving out. ***** Look at the bright side. It’s 58 days until the Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the unofficial start of spring.

Big Plan Needed Dear Editor: The New York Times did a story on the need for the City and State to invest maybe $100 billion into the subway

system. The story points out that the subway is basically why New York became one of the world’s great cities. For too long, the MTA has applied Band-Aids when full-scale operations were needed. Other countries and other cities are building and rebuilding their systems, which will leave New York in the dust. It’s been too easy for too long to kick things down the road. Governor Cuomo (who is really the one in charge) must spearhead a comprehensive plan for the overhaul of the New York subway system. Yes, the Rockaway Branch Line should be activated but that should just be one item in a complete, transformative modernization of the entire system. There is no time to waste. M. Cioffi

Again? Passengers Rescued From Rockaway Ferry In Another Stranding By Katie McFadden

Just one month after a Rockaway ferry got stuck after taking off from Pier 11, the service once again found itself in hot—or rather—cold water again. On a chilly December evening, more than two dozen passengers were stranded when a Manhattan-bound ferry on the Rockaway route got caught on a sandbar. Jake Nicholson, Noah Nicholson and Anthony Scotto were on the 5:15 p.m. ferry to Manhattan on Wednesday, December 27, to see the New York Rangers take

on the Washington Capitols that evening. However, they never made it to the game. At 5:48 p.m., Jake Nicholson reached out to The Rockaway Times via Facebook. “I am currently on the 5:15 Rockaway Ferry headed for Manhattan. We have hit a sandbar in between Breezy Point and Coney Island. The boat stopped on a dime and sent everyone flying. They have told us there has been a mechanical failure, but I don’t believe it,” his initial message read. And so began an ordeal for Nicholson and 26 other people on board, that would continue for several hours, with air temperatures reaching below 20 degrees that night. The Rockaway Times reached out to NYC Ferry for further confirmation of the incident, but it wasn’t until after 8 p.m. that the agency publicly acknowledged

the incident via social media. “A 5:15 departure from Rockaway ran aground on a sandbar. Emergency responders are on the scene. All passengers are safe. No injuries reported. All other NYC Ferry service operating without interruption,” NYC Ferry tweeted. Meanwhile, Nicholson provided updates while onboard. He confirmed that everyone on board was okay and was wearing life jackets. There was also an open bar, with passengers being treated to free beverages. However, another passenger on board, Kevin Fitzgerald, said this opportunity was later cut off. “They cut us off of any drinks,” Fitzgerald said during a live broadcast on Fox 5, “Maybe because everyone took advantage.” Fitzgerald continued to provide live updates, noting that everyone on board was okay, but intermittent shut offs of electricity and heat on board made the situation more uncomfortable. But help was on the way. The FDNY, NYPD and U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene to figure out the best way to rescue the passengers on board the boat called the Flyer, which was stuck in roughly two feet of water. Not able to get a large rescue vessel close enough without itself getting stuck, the FDNY used a small raft to transport people, two at a time, to larger rescue vessels. At nearly 11:30 p.m., the FDNY reported that the rescue mission was a success. “We devised a shuttle operation to remove 27 people from the ferry, onto a smaller fireboat, onto the medium-sized fireboat, and eventually onto our 140’ fireboat, the Fireboat 343,” FDNY Chief of Special Operations John Esposito said. “It was difficult because they had to climb down a 12’ straight ladder, down the back of the ferry, onto our boat, then transferred onto several different boats. NYPD, FDNY, and the United States Coast Guard were out there dealing with the elements. The passengers are now out of the elements, we have no reported injuries.” This incident occurred just one month after a Rockaway bound ferry got stuck on a submerged object just after leaving Pier 11

in Manhattan, leaving roughly 114 passengers stranded. Being close to the pier, those passengers were transported to safety within a short time. With the December 27 event being the second stranding incident within a month, local elected officials like State Senator Joe Addabbo, Jr., are calling for NYC Ferry to do better. “We are glad that no one was seriously injured during this incident,” Addabbo said. “HowContinued on page 24

Thirty-seven percent (unsurprisingly) pledged to eat better and exercise more to lose weight. However, according to local gym, Burn Fitness co-owner, David Riley, why wait for January 1 to hurriedly join the gym and burn out before even Valentine’s Day arrives. “From my perspective, I believe people put themselves under this self-inflicted pressure to join the gym once the new year rolls in. I believe folks who make these ‘do or die’ resolutions are setting themselves up for failure. After all the holiday feasting, they gain a few pounds

Amtrak Repair Work at Penn Station Will Affect Some LIRR Customers Starting January 8 Here’s what the MTA is doing to help Beginning Monday, January 8, 2018, Amtrak will be conducting repair work at Penn Station that requires changes to Long Island Rail Road scheduled service. To help minimize the impact this construction will have on our customers, the LIRR is making changes that will allow us to maintain capacity into Penn Station. Bayswater Brothers Bring Hope Back to the Homeless By Katie McFadden

“We can’t change the whole world, but one step at a time, we can change one person’s world,” Nochum Russell said, and that’s just what he and his brother, Shmulie, have set out to do. These Bayswater brothers are bringing hope back to humanity by helping humans in need. As temperatures plummet below freezing, the Russells are warming the spirits of the homeless population across New York City by providing individuals with care packages. With a little help, they’re hoping to broaden their mission on a much larger scale. On Saturday night, Nochum and Shmulie Russell spent their evening making their way around the city, delivering roughly 45 packages with warm blankets, scarves, earmuffs, gloves, socks, plus basic toiletries, snacks and water, to homeless individuals living

on the streets. They also offer something that can’t be put in a bag—hugs. “Often we go up to people and offer them these items and then ask if they want a hug, and many will say yes. Multiple people have said, ‘I needed that.’ Some people just need that human contact,” Shmulie said. “I once started talking to a guy on a corner for two minutes and he said nobody had even said hello

to him in months. There are little things that we can all do to raise people up and make them feel like a person again,” Nochum said. Yet it’s not just the homeless they’re helping. “It was close to midnight and I had work on Sunday, but we had a couple more blankets to give out,” Nochum said. “We weren’t going home until we were done,” Shmulie chimed in. That night, the brothers say they encountered a car crash near the Holland Tunnel, and they gave the last of their blankets to the shocked and shivering victims. “While our main priority may be to help the homeless, we’re out here for anyone that needs help,” Nochum said. Last Saturday’s trip wasn’t the first. While both work fulltime jobs, the brothers find time after work to buy supplies, organize them into bags at their homes and deliver them each Saturday to those in need. But they’ve been doing so for at least five years,

and that spirit of giving back is something they grew up around. “We were fortunate to grow up in a home with a lot of giving,” Nochum said. “Our mom used to tell us when she was young, her father would pick up one or two homeless people and have them join them for lunch, and this had a lasting impression on her. When we would go in to the city on the A train and a homeless person came on begging, my mother would pull out a yogurt or whatever we had from our lunch and would give it to the person. And that stuck with us. It’s almost in our genes. We knew that we had to continue this,” Nochum said. While the brothers have been helping homeless individuals under the radar for more than five years, they’ve decided to take their movement public in the hopes of doing something even bigger, and the ball is already rolling. Continued from Page 16 weeks, they started explaining their mission to local businesses, many of which have been more than happy to help by offering discounts or donating supplies, and the Russells have launched an online movement to collect money so that they can buy more. “We’ve been getting discounts which is great because we’re doing this out of pocket, but our pockets can only go so deep before we’re the ones that will need a blanket,” Nochum said. Last week, the brothers set up a Paypal account to accept online donations and raised about $1,200, which helped them to buy supplies for last weekend’s giveaway, but the pressure is on to raise even more. “I’m a chaplain for the New York State Chaplain Task Force (NYSCTF), and they’ve been very generous in helping us,” Shmulie said. “They gave us 100 blankets for free, and as a

THURSDAY, JANUARY 4, 2018 chaplain, I only have to pay to offset the shipping so the organization doesn’t pay for it. But we called and said we’re going to need a lot more, since we’re doing this every Saturday night.” The NYSCTF pulled through, offering the Russells 6,000 blankets. The only catch is that they’re being shipped in a shipping container, which comes at a high price. The brothers are hoping to raise $7,500 to offset the shipping costs and to buy more supplies for care packages in bulk. With New York frozen in the dead of winter and blanket supplies running low, they’re hoping to raise the money quickly. They have set up a GoFundMe account for their #humans4humans movement. Donations, in the form of good condition blankets, jackets, gloves, hats, sweaters, and scarves, as well as brand new socks, and cash can be dropped off anytime from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 910 Railroad Avenue in Woodmere. The brothers have been very transparent in their efforts by documenting almost every step of the process on their Facebook pages (Nochum Russell and Shmulie Russell), from photos of them preparing the care packages, to videos of them handing donations to those in need, with many individuals expressing their ap-

Page 17 preciation and offering words of hope. “Never give up. The struggle is real, but things can always get better. As many negatives there are, there’s always that many positives. Keep your head up and never stop trying,” Brian, a homeless man in Jamaica, Queens said in one video. The Russells also hope to never stop trying. “Our vision is huge,” Shmulie said. The brothers have an ultimate goal of having their own center where they can organize donations and a kitchen where warm meals can be made. As both men have experience working in special needs communities, they also hope to use this hub so those with special needs can help put together the care packages and cook meals. “They’re another part of society that’s overlooked and this would be a great way for them to feel like they’re part of this community that’s doing something good,” Nochum said. “With the public’s help, we know we can do this.”

Imagine not having working heat this week? Residents in Redfern unfortunately know it all too well. Since almost a week ago, residents at the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Redfern Houses complex in Far Rockaway had no heat or hot water, but NYCHA may have finally offered some relief by Wednesday. On Wednesday morning, resident, Teresa Scott, told The Rockaway Times that she and her neighbors had been suffering since Thursday, December 28. “It feels colder inside my apartment than outside. Everyone is coughing. To keep warm, many of us are turning on our ovens to get some heat. I personally live on a fixed income, and can’t afford to buy a heater. Many seniors and children are coughing, and are getting seriously ill. I have high blood pressure, and just this morning it spiked to 182, and a nurse

advised me to go to the hospital. I don’t understand. Just because we live in public housing doesn’t mean that we have to be treated this way. We are people too. Now I know how homeless people feel when they are sleeping on the streets in the freezing cold,” Scott said. According to Councilman Dovovan Richards’ press spokesperson, over the weekend the Councilman was in touch with NYCHA, and was informed that there were people working on the heating issue with temporary boilers/condensation tank. However, Redfern Tenant Association President Glenn Collins, personally checked the area, and did not find anyone working on the boilers or the condensation. As of Wednesday morning, many residents were all over Facebook complaining that they still had no heat. In October 2017, NYCHA announced that they were starting a $123 million recovery and re-

siliency project at the Redfern Houses, which included adding new heat and hot water systems and a boiler building. Yet that project is not slated to be complete until summer 2019. Scott said, “I’ve sent in multiple tickets with complaints to NYCHA. Last night they claimed it was fixed, but now today, here we are all freezing again. Supposedly a few years ago, they got money from FEMA to install new boilers in all the buildings, so what happened? They have not done anything or even tried to exercise preventative measures to make sure the pipes do not freeze over.”

Late evening on Tuesday, January 2, Councilman Richards set up an emergency community meeting with the NYCHA officials and frustrated residents. At this meeting, the residents were reassured that the issue was due to an overflowing condensation tank and it was being dealt with. They were reassured that when they got back to their apartments, they would have heat. As The RT was going to press, some residents were still complaining of no heat, but a last-minute statement from NYCHA on Wednesday afternoon said the problem was finally fixed. “Heat has been restored to the development since it went out this morning. There have been intermittent outages since last week. Staff is launching a 24 hour watch tonight to ensure no additional outages occur and to provide residents the safe, warm homes they deserve,” a NYCHA spokesperson said.

Medications and Adverse Effects Medications can cause a wide variety of signs, symptoms, and medical conditions, some of which are direct adverse effects (AEs) of a medication and others that are the result of a drug-drug interaction. Today I would like to discuss some of these AEs and interactions. The most common cause for ER visits for AEs in the U.S. is bleeding, and the majority of these cases are related to Coumadin, generically called warfarin. Warfarin has serious drug interactions with many other medications and these interactions can raise the INR (a measurement of blood clotting time), thereby causing bleeding. Among the medications with severe interactions are Bactrim, erythromycin, amiodarone, metronidazole (Flagyl), and antifungals like fluconazole. The

INR is also raised by acetaminophen (Tylenol) and prednisone. Selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs i.e. Zoloft), used to treat depression and chronic pain, most commonly can cause sexual dysfunction (occurs in about 17 percent of those taking them). But two other serious AEs with these medications are gastrointestinal bleeding and hyponatremia (low sodium). These two AEs are more common in older persons taking the drugs and if a person is taking an SSRI they should avoid diuretics, particularly hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), which can make the hyponatremia worse. Fluoroquinalones (Cipro, Levaquin) are commonly prescribed antibiotics for diseases like urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and bronchitis. In July 2016, the FDA changed the labeling of these drugs due to severe, disabling AEs associated with them. Among the AEs with these drugs are neuropathy (numbness, tingling, or weakness), which may be perma-

nent, and tendonitis and tendon rupture. Recently, several studies have suggested a new and very dangerous AE associated with fluoroquinalones, namely aortic aneurysm and aneurysm rupture (dissection), which can be life-threatening. Cholinesterase inhibitors (i.e. Aricept), used to treat dementia, have a high incidence of AEs related to the gastrointestinal tract including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss. Urinary incontinence may also occur and is often incorrectly attributed to the underlying dementia. A more serious AE associated with these drugs is syncope, or sudden loss of consciousness, which can result in hip fractures. Hip fractures can be a devastating complication in elderly patients. Given the modest, if any, benefit seen in dementia and the serious nature of their potential side effects, they should be used with great care. Bactrim (trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole or TMP-SMX), a sulfa-containing antibiotic, was mentioned above for its serious interaction with warfarin. But

Page 27 it can also cause hyperkalemia (high potassium) in elderly patients and those with kidney disease. The hyperkalemia can be enhanced if the patient is on an ACE inhibitor (i.e. lisinopril) or an ARB (i.e. losartan). TMPSMX has been linked to an increased risk of sudden cardiac death, which can be caused by hyperkalemia, in those taking an ACE or ARB. Lastly, NSAIDS (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil, Aleve, etc.) are well-known causes of GI bleeding and kidney injury. The risk of kidney injury and failure is increased in those also taking an ACE inhibitor or ARB, and a diuretic. In addition, the use of an NSAID makes ACE inhibitors and ARBs less effective at lowering blood pressure. Also NSAID or COX-2 (i.e. Celebrex, Mobic) use in those with heart disease increases the risk of a heart attack or admission for heart failure. Depending on how much of the path we have walked and the years that have past, we look at our lives, a culmination of every decision, every thought, word and deed, and sometimes ask, “would I have done things differently?” Some of the choices we make are made from a reactive mind, which tend to come from a source of fear and denial. of those reactive decisions bring pain and suffering. Instinctual reactions though can be lifesaving, like reacting to a fire, grabbing a child in danger, saving a choking person. Our reflexes kick in and we react with survival instinct. Many a hero are born from running towards a fearful situation. We are surrounded by them every day. But sometimes we’d rather run towards that burning building than face the seed of suffering we carry in our hearts. No matter where we run, it is there and keeps showing up until we listen, reflect and perhaps surrender to it with resolve. This can come through prayer, loving kindness, tenderness and compassion for ourselves. We cannot rush our pain, but try to walk through the storm until we find ourselves on friendly shores. The dark emotions that fuel our sometimes discursive, meandering, reactive mind such as fear, shame, anger, denial, grief and despair are thought of as negative or bad which brings a kind of intolerance to our human condition of suffering. Ever hear some say, “get over it” or wish that a loved one would move on already. But these so-called dark emotions are a natural and inevitable response to life and our existence here on this rock — Earth. In other words, it’s a part of life. Buddha, as he sat under that

infamous Bodhi tree, formulated a path to enlightenment that began with the Four Noble Truths starting with, life is suffering, and gave teachings to a path to end suffering or enlightenment. This path is sought through right action, right thought, right speech and right mindfulness. Another path is to give our suffering meaning; it doesn’t eliminate it, but it loosens the tendrils of our heart long enough for us to breath. Much good and light are born from such darkness and suffering. Without the darkness, there is no light. It is only when we stay in the darkness, holding onto it, that we lose sight of our path, we lose our way. This is the discursive, punishing mind that holds us hostage. Unchain yourself from the prison of your darkness and know that you are not alone, your suffering has meaning and can give birth to light, love and forgiveness. You have the key, pick it up, and keep walking your path. The dark will give way to the light, just as night gives way to dawn. “Between stimulus and response there is a space. Rockaway Teen Dreams of Becoming Miss New York Teen USA By Nicole Taylor-Lang

Having young role models for our Rockaway youth is significant for the growth of our community. Rockaway’s very own Danielle Guglielmo, age 17, is just that. A senior at Scholars’ Academy and now a contestant for Miss New York Teen USA. “Confidently Beautiful” is the main message of the pageant being held later this month in Purchase, NY. “They are advocating for feeling positive and happy in your own skin,” Guglielmo says. Being in a pageant is not something the Rockaway Park teen was expecting to do. “I always thought about modeling or being in pageants, but I did not think I had the body type. I am only 5’2 and have a more muscular body,” says Guglielmo. But after seeing an ad on Instagram and thinking to herself, “why not try,” she applied and got the call back for Miss New York Teen USA. “Some people are actually surprised that I am in the pageant. Their response is ‘but you’re not tall or rail thin’ and I respond back with 'things are different now,’” she says with a big smile. Instead of a swimsuit competition, the pageant will be having fitness wear competition. This is one of her favorite parts about the pageant, as they are advocating for fitness and well-being, instead of having the ideal model body. The pageant will also include an interview portion and an evening gown category. “This pageant is one way Danielle again proves that if you want something bad enough, you go out and get it,” Linda Guglielmo, Danielle’s mother, said. “My husband and I couldn’t be more proud.” Being part of Miss New York Teen USA has also helped Danielle to break out of her shell. “This pageant has allowed her to step out of her comfort zone and really put herself out there,” says her mother. “I am shy, unless it is someone I know or I’m comfortable with,

but being part of this helped me with that,” Gugliemo said. From practicing for interviews, public speaking and asking for sponsorships, she says she has gained more confidence in herself. “I had to go around asking businesses for sponsorships and was afraid to ask people for money,” she said. However, she worked up the courage though and was able to get sponsorships from many local businesses that were happy to support her. Businesses like Elegante Pizzeria, Harbor Optics, Bungalow Bar and Assemblywoman Stacey Amato are just a few of her many local supporters. A resident of Rockaway Park since the age of 11, Guglielmo has been keeping busy with her education, working, and her athletic activities — gymnastics and cheerleading. However, after tearing a ligament in her ankle sophomore year, she had to put cheerleading and gymnastics on hold. “After I got better, I made the decision to focus more on school,” Guglielmo said. Still wanting to be involved with the team, her coach soon offered her a position, which she happily accepted. She now volunteers to help coach cheerleading, from high school freshmen to seniors. On top of everything, Gugliemlo is also focusing on her college applications and her job at Marine Park Veterinary Group in Brooklyn. “I love working with animals and I want to be a veterinarian,” she said. “I applied to colleges with the top vet programs, such as Cornell.” She is waiting to hear back from her top choices and will soon make the tough choice of where to continue her education. Guglielmo says that after her cat died, she knew she wanted to get involved in the veterinary business and help sick animals. “My vet offered me a volunteer position at the office and a month later they offered me a job,” she said. She has been working there since December

2016 and says she’s grateful for the opportunity to be helping animals. She also has animals of her own that she cares for, including two Pomeranian dogs, Lola and Kylie, and a Persian cat named Bentley that that she loves dearly. Animal rights and welfare are among her top interests, which is why she’ll be advocating for these issues at the pageant. “I want to help no kill shelters and promote spaying and neutering animals,” she says. Dr. Peter Montella, Veterinary physician at Marine Park Veterinary Group said, “Danielle has continuously proven herself to be an important asset to our team. I can vouch for her character and drive, and have no doubt she will continue to be successful in her endeavors.” Oddly enough, from working with animals and learning about illnesses, she was able to apply her knowledge to saving someone close to her heart—her father. “One day at work, a dog came in and the side of his face looked droopy. We soon found out that the dog had a stroke,” Guglielmo said. Later that evening, she was telling her parents about the dog that came into the office. That’s when she noticed something odd about one of her father’s eyes. “His eye looked like it was sagging a

little bit and reminded me of what I just saw at work,” she said. It didn't seem so alarming at first, so her father did not get it checked out right away. As time passed, they noticed it progressively getting worse and she advised her father to get it checked out immediately. He soon found out it was a brain aneurysm and had to undergo brain surgery. She took that incident as a sign to keep pursuing her career and as a blessing for her father. “He is doing a lot better now,” Guglielmo says. “He is one of my biggest supporters, he always says, ‘Oh I can see you being on television or being in commercials one day’,” she said cheerfully. In less than two weeks, Guglielmo will be competing in the pageant. It will be held from January 12-14 at The Purchase College Performing Arts Center in Purchase, NY. Guglielmo says she is grateful for all the support her family, friends and community has shown her. “Sometimes I think to myself, ‘Is this real?’” she says with a laugh. “This community has given so much support and I would like to thank all of them for their generous donations,” Linda Guglielmo said. “I know one thing for sure, whatever Danielle sets her mind on she will achieve.” “There is nothing but greatness ahead for Danielle,” says her godfather, Glenn Schaeffer. “My daughter, Gabriella, has always looked up to her as an older sister,” he added. The winner of the Miss New York Teen USA will go on to represent the state of New York in the 2018 Miss Teen USA pageant and will spend a year as a teen ambassador. Guglielmo and her family are excited for the future, no matter what happens with the pageant. “It’s not about the winning, it’s about the journey and we couldn’t be more proud to watch her discover, and grow as an individual,” Linda Guglielmo said.

Push and Pull Dear Enchantress, I am needing advice on this man I've been dating forever on and off. He looks exactly as I wish he would. I’m so attracted to him and he has amazing qualities. The problem is he often pushes me away, and then I get hurt and want him even more. I feel myself being a typical woman who gets crazy when ignored. I have a strong feeling to end this, but I can't, he always comes back and is amazing, but it seems to be on a time limit. I start to get nervous when things get too good, and then I start blaming myself for pushing him away. ARGH, it's so annoying and frustrating. When we are together everything is great, when we go on

When he is "pushing" you away it also sounds like you lose touch with reality and go into rescue mode, and I imagine this might cause anxiety and puts you in fight or flight mode. The good news is, because it's a pattern, you can be the one to put a PAUSE as soon as you begin to notice signs of him pulling away. Become a witness to the small signs of when this is happening. If you can share what you notice in real time, when it is happening, step back and remind yourself: this is what happens, and take secret notes, so you can stay curious. The most efficient answer to your question: when he is pushing you away or you are feeling his absence, ride that wave, or pull back, get busy, do things that are creative, force yourself to get physically active in a healthy way. It sounds like you get, or rather your ego gets triggered by the "rejection" of him, and you are normal! So

New High School Planned For Far Rockaway

With the Department of Education (DOE) recently announcing that two Far Rockaway schools are slated to close at the end of the school year, the neighborhood’s education system is taking a hit, but a new school could offer some hope. Legacy Academy, a new charter school, may be coming to town. Legacy Academy announced its plan to open a comprehensive high school in downtown Far Rockaway starting in Fall 2019. Far Rockaway native, Regina Glover Johnson, is the lead founder and proposed CEO of charter school, Legacy Academy. Johnson says it will be more than just a high school. Legacy is expected to be a hub for the Rockaway community that fosters authentic academic growth for students, access to quality public spaces, and develops the capacity of its community members through free classes, resources, and family health services. The announcement of this new school coincides with the complete revitalization of Downtown Far Rockaway in years to come. The Legacy model was also inspired by the academic successes of High Tech High, the community-wide progress seen through the Harlem Children’s Zone, and the revitalization efforts of the Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation. Legacy Academy hopes to revitalize education in Far Rockaway, a neighborhood with schools that once produced people like world-renowned scientist, Burton

Richter and billionaires like Carl Icahn. Over the past five decades, the quality of educational success has declined, with Far Rockaway’s two high schools reporting graduation rates of 60 percent. Also, in December, the DOE announced that two Far Rockaway public schools, PS 42 and MS 53, are slated to close due to failing test scores, attendance, enrollment and teacher retention. “Our education system is failing our community horribly, and it has little to do with test scores. We have to develop thinkers and leaders who will perpetuate generational leadership skills, academic excellence, and self-pride. What good is education if it is constantly reactive? We can no longer be dependent on endless outside investment,” Johnson said. Legacy Academy hopes to make some improvements by being a different type of school. “The mission of Legacy Academy is to cultivate a thriving, self-sustaining community through the development of academically rounded, civically-invested, and progressive young adults. Legacy Academy will be a project-based school where classes are interdisciplinary and combine subject matter with actual careers. (i.e Geometry/Carpentry, U.S. History/Lobbyist, Physics/ Mechanical Engineer, English/Investigative Journalist). Students build relationships with professionals in the community and create pipelines for future collaboration and internships,” CEO Johnson said. “The culmination of

learning is always real work, and not an artificial measure of student learning. Students present their learning through collaboratively created largescale projects that contribute to the development of the Rockaways. Our goal is that students are the driving force behind work that makes an immediate and visible change in our community, and also that they are invested in the progress of their community and will return to continue their work, raise their families and reinvest their resources into it.” Queens has historically been one of the most anti-charter school boroughs, but Johnson says that authentic, culturally responsive education is the most valuable tool in the revitalization of the Rockaway community. “Education is so much more than math and reading. Students spend eight to 10 hours in school every day, and if they are being treated like blank copies who only gain value from silently awaiting input from rigid millionaire-created systems, then what else can we expect but weakened communities without leaders who have the personal skills to take action?” Johnson said. “Local issues, culture, artistic expression, and experiences are elements that must be incorporated into student’s academic plan, and any education system that ignores the need for cultural responsiveness is a detriment not only to student’s academic progress, but to the progress of a whole community. Success is a word that should be reserved for the long term. It comes through self-actualization, tenacity, and zeal, and you learn this by being empowered, not by being told that it looks like everything other than what you are. Our education system is failing our community horribly, and it has little to do with test

scores. We have to develop independent thinkers who will perpetuate generational leadership skills, academic excellence, and self-pride.” In 2012, Johnson began working on building a structure that would foster long term sustainable progress for Far Rockaway. In another interview, she stated that she is guided by the research from her thesis on culturally responsive pedagogy and her current research on equitable school creation at High Tech High Graduate School of Education, another well-respected charter school system. The organization has been praised by Oprah Winfrey for their innovative project-based model and backed by Bill and Melinda Gates with over 100 million dollars in donations. They believe that Johnson is the best candidate to bring High Tech High’s equity work to New York City. The view on charter schools tends to be mixed, but they are increasingly gaining money and political power, according to Johnson. The development of Legacy Academy is a proactive step in community ownership of their educational options. The founding team welcomes unlimited community involvement in the founding of the organization and polishing of the model. The exact location for Legacy Academy has not yet been determined. According to Johnson, “The proposed school will be a newly built building in downtown Far Rockaway. This week’s article is more of a public service announcement than anything else. It is fitting of course with the weather we’ve been having this past week and I’ve received too many calls and emails to write about anything else. At least one third of Rockaway had a frozen pipe this week. Talk to your neighbors and you’ll see that is no exaggeration. It was record-breaking cold and with that kind of weather always comes the busiest weeks of any plumber’s year. People have many misconceptions about frozen pipes. Some people operate under the notion that if their pipes haven’t froze in 15 years, it won’t ever happen. Every year that you’ve never had an issue, take it as luck as much as anything else. The wind is really what makes the pipes freeze; not the temperature outside. The only difference is that when the wind blows when it’s 10 degrees out, it’s a -5 degree wind chill. That will freeze your pipes in a hurry. A few years back, everyone ran out and bought heat wraps without having the knowledge of installing them. Most people assumed that wrapping the pipes with the wiring and plugging it into an outlet were all you had to do. A few years went by with mild winters and then “pop.” It’s the only time they’ll realize that the heat wraps aren’t doing anything. The average homeowner just doesn’t realize what they are up against. If you have gotten away with it so far this winter, here are the only ways to prevent a freeze up this winter season. 1. The classic drip. The single best tried-and-true method of preventing freezing wa-

ter that even Mother Nature can’t seem to get around. In kindergarten we were all taught why the oceans can never freeze and the water moving through those pipes in your house is no different. Eat the water bill and drip every faucet and your shower on days that are colder than 20 degrees. If the wind is blowing off the ocean or the bay, leave them dripping through the night. 2. Wrapping your water lines. Like everything else, there is a professional way of doing this. First you need to by the proper insulation. Armor flex split insulation is preferred and works best. Make sure to cut pieces a little longer than the pipe and duct tape the seams. If you ignore even one inch of the pipe you are covering, it is like doing nothing at all in the first place. 3. Leave all doors open in your home to get the best airflow into every cabinet. Open cabinet doors underneath the kitchen and bathroom sinks. If by some chance you were away or forgot to do these things and your pipes did freeze, leave your faucets in the open position, turn on that electric heater and hope for the best. Make sure you know where your main water shut off is so that if you see water falling from the ceiling, you can quickly get the water turned off and prevent any major water damage. Hopefully the rest of the season isn’t as bad as these last few days. Happy 2018 and if you need a plumber for any reason, I recommend calling as soon as you think you might have a problem. As I tell all my clients, phone calls are free and sometimes can save you a lot of money.

How did 2017 fare for local real estate? Records show that homes went for home pretty hefty prices. When houses are sold the selling price becomes public record. What prices don’t necessarily reflect are the effects of family deals (mom sells to son at a deep discount off the market rate) or if there are private mortgages held in addition to a main mortgage. For example, the records say Mary and Tom bought a house for $400,000 and took out a mortgage from a bank. But the real price of the house might have been $600,000. In this case, the seller agreed to hold a second mortgage of $200,000 making the real selling price $600,000. The true sales price listed on public records, therefore, often do not include private mortgages as in

the case of Tom and Mary. According to public records, 232 Beach 147th Street sold for $900,000; 160 Beach 139th fetched $740,000; and 145 Beach 145th sold for $2,435,000. All these sales were in November. In 11693, recent sales included 8416 Beach Channel Drive which sold for $660,000; 311 Beach 85th Street closed for $495,000 and 303 Beach 90th sold for $450,000. Also in 11693, 305 Beach 68 St sold for $530,000; 72-30 Burchell Avenue sold for $456,000 and 72-16 Almeda Ave sold for $410,000. Additional public records show the following recent sales in zip codes 11694, 11693, 11692, and 11691. 133-17 Newport Avenue sold for $770,000; 135-11 Cronston had a selling price of $578,000; and 182 Beach

128th sold for $800,000. In 11693 recent sales included 96-13 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, which sold for $650,000. 316 Beach 92nd Street sold for $345,000 and 155 Beach 92nd Street sold for $554,947. The zip code 11692 showed the following: 69-50 DeCosta Avenue went for $160,000; 70-10 Coral Reef Way sold for $821,000 and 6518 DeCosta Avenue sold for $572,500. Recent sales in 11691 include: 448 Beach 44th Street, which sold for $334,000. 491 Beach 44th sold for $471,450 and 531 Beach 43rd sold for $273,000. In some other interesting real estate news, in November, NYC Housing Preservation and Development announced a list of Broad Channel homes that have been bought out by the City after being destroyed by Hur-

ricane Sandy. These properties include 20-14 Demerest Road, 325 Bert Road, 12 West 12th Road, 12-04 Church Road, 10-11 Cross Bay Boulevard, 13 East 10th Road, 1416 Cross Bay Boulevard, 10 West 12th Road, 56 West 18th Road, 610 Walton Road, 506 Cross Bay Boulevard, 112 Noel Road, 18 East 6th Road, 101 East 7th Road, 115 East 6th Road, 9 Noel Road, 540 Cross Bay Boulevard, 206 East 6th Road and 11 East 9th Road.
