Jamaica Bay Gets the Seal of Approval By Katie McFadden
Seals have always drawn attention when they’ve hauled out onto the beach over the past few winters, but it seems they’ve found a new hot spot this season—Jamaica Bay. On Sunday, December 30, Dan Mundy, Jr. of the Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers, was out on a boat, exploring the bay, when he came across a rare sight—a pair of adorable harbor seals hauled out on Yellow Bar wetlands island, just west of Broad Channel. Seals aren’t exactly uncommon in local waters. Over the past few winters, a few have been seen hauling themselves out onto the beach to relax. They’re so common now that American Princess Cruises has operated a seal watching tour in the winter for several years. The tour usually heads to Swinburne Island near Staten Island, where dozens of seals can be seen sunbathing on the rocks or swimming around nearby. However, spotting them in Jamaica Bay itself is more of a rarity and according to Mundy, it’s a great sign for the bay. “This is a great thing going on in the bay. The seals are probably chasing herring here this time of year. It’s definitely a good sign for the bay,” Mundy said, who spotted the seals midday on Sunday. “I spotted them on Yellow Bar Island, which the Army Corps of Engineers restored a big portion of about 10 years ago. That island is doing very well now. Sometimes we’ll run into birds worth noting like snowy owls, and now we’re seeing more
seals. Seeing seals around here used to be very rare, but over the last 10 years or so, we’ve started to see them more often. You’re not going to see them every time, but it’s more on a regular basis now that you’ll see them throughout the whole bay, from the tip of Breezy Point on in,” he said. Mundy says a big contributing factor to seeing more seals is the unique depths of Jamaica Bay. “Jamaica Bay isn’t like the Long Island Sound with shallow waters. We have some areas that are 60 feet deep and
these areas support this massive amount of bio-life like herring and large mammals that come into the area like seals. This is a great indicator for the bay and the health of the water, but it’s also possible because of the deep areas,” Mundy said. However Mundy added that there has been an ongoing battle to keep it that way as various government agencies and scientists have fre-
quently proposed filling in the deep portions. “We’re trying to make scientists and agencies more aware of the critical importance of the deep areas of the bay. These deep areas were dug out by man, but our local organizations and fishermen that have a pulse on the area realize that it was a great thing. If the whole bay was 10feet deep, you’d never have the amount of fish or marine mammals that we have here,” Mundy said. “There’s a lack of understanding when it comes
to agencies and scientists. Sometimes they’ll suggest that it be refilled, which is horrifying to us. Some scientists mean well and some agencies listen, but some love the idea of making the bay more shallow, which would be a very bad idea. Seeing those seals on Sunday just highlights how well the bay is doing because the water is deep enough for those mammals to come and feed and relax here. It really is a great sign.” Photos by Dan Mundy, Jr.

BOYLEING POINTS
Line Up When you travel, you learn that people actually do like to wait on lines. Not all people, but by the looks of things, most. I’ll never get the hipster thing about getting on a line for a taco or a kale sandwich in Rockaway when you could get the same thing with no line in Brooklyn. But what do you do when you travel? What do you do if you hate friggin’ lines and you fly halfway around the world to see some stuff? You’ve gotta see the inside of that amazing piece of architecture or you’ve gotta
have a meal at a place that is world famous. Ya know, part of the reason you made the trek in the first place. You don’t want to be a Debbie Downer (sorry to the happy Debbies everywhere!) but you arrive in a weakened state. The last thing you want is another line. You’ve already been put through the airport ringer. The security line is just a crush of tense, simmering, frustrated folk hoping they’re not the ones picked for the body search. You
Page 5
get through the metal detector without setting off alarms, but your shoes are stuck in the x-ray machine. The guy in front of you had a tube of moisturizer and now the TSA agent is all Dick Tracy on the guy, checking every item in his shaving kit. My shoes are full of radiation by now. I feel for the moisturizer guy because you know he can’t even roll his eyes or he’ll be sent to a private room. Finally, Dick Tracy allows the guy to move on. I put on my shoes wondering if I’m slipping into a couple of carcinogens. We worry about a flight delay but we win the lottery and the flight takes off on time. We land, all good. But then we’re sent to a long line to have our passports checked. I don’t like the way the humorless guy looks at my passport picture then at me. I’m smart enough not to mutter my curse word until I’m a few feet out of his view. You can probably guess which one I used. That might be another column, what’s your go-to curse word? I know, de-
pends on the situation. Well, what about this one? Begins with an “a”? Now we wait for luggage. Then we wait for a cab. We get to our place but we’ve to wait a little to check in. We hear the best chocolate churro in the world is sold at a place just a couple of blocks away. Let’s go. There’s a line around the corner. You’ve flown half way around the world to get on a line? And that’s the big dilemma. If you don’t wait on that line and you don’t have the taste of a lifetime, was it worth the halfway around the world trip? Is it worth seeing the Sistine Chapel from the outside? Or The Louvre? Do you kill half the trip on a line? I think people who like lines are nuts but maybe they’re on to something. I saw a friend on a long line at the Post Office and he was smiling. When I asked what the hell was wrong with him, he said he was traveling vicariously. “I just tell myself this is the line for Space Mountain.”

***** Congrats to Sean and EunChong (EJ) Thorsen, the proud parents of a baby boy who was the first Rockaway baby of 2019. They’re still deciding on a name. The young lad was actually born on January 2. In other years, newborns have arrived just minutes after the ball drops in Times Square. ***** Maybe it’s time to hoard some Forever stamps (not that they’ll be available!) Stamps are going up a nickel as of January 27. A nickel sounded like a lot and sure enough it’s the biggest hike since 1991. The cost of a stamp will be a double-nickel, 55 cents. ***** As we’ve noted, Eric Ulrich is running for Public Advocate. And so is a couple of
dozen others. But if all the Democrats split the vote, maybe the lone Republican (we think he’s the only one to announce) will find himself as the winner. If he does win, there’ll have to be a special election for his City Council seat. We’re thinking a lot of would-be candidates are eyeing that possibility. ***** Look at the bright side. Resolutions are worth it even if you can’t stick with them. If you promised to diet for the whole year and you gave up after a day at least you got one good day in. ***** The free stuff we give away can turn pretty darn valuable. We’ve been giving away St. John’s basketball tickets and now they’re the hottest team in town. The Johnnies knocked off 16th-ranked Marquette the other night to improve to 12-1 on the season. And how hot are the tickets now? Famous front-runner John McEnroe was spotted courtside at Tuesday’s game. (McEnroe rooted
for the Knicks when they were good, and then rooted for the Lakers and now is on the Red Storm bandwagon). We’ve got four tickets for Saturday, January 12. Send an email to Mail@ Rockawaytimes.com and we’ll put your name in the hat. ***** Got a little ham in you? The Rockaway Theatre Company is holding auditions for Ken Ludwig’s A Comedy of Tenors on Sunday, January 6 from 4-7 p.m. and Tuesday, January 8 from 7-9 p.m. These are the only audition dates for this production. There will be no individual appointments or alternate audition dates. Auditions and Callbacks (if needed) will be held at the Post Theater, Bldg T4. Performance Dates: March 29, 30, 31 April 5,6,7,12,13,14. All cast members must be available for every performance. For more info, visit RockawayTheatreCompany.org ***** 234 Beach 102nd Street, the Sands Point building, is in contract to be sold. We don’t
Page 7 have a number but the listing price was north of $11 million. ***** The Parks Department says, “Put on your boots and haul your tree to a Mulchfest location — we'll chip your tree into wood chips that we'll use to nourish trees and make NYC even greener.” You can drop off your tree at Beach 94th Street and Shore Front Parkway or at the Far Rockaway Skate Park parking lot at Beach 11th Street and Seagirt Boulevard. Sanitation will do curbside pickup through January 12. Call 311 if you need more info. ***** Some readers got mixed up because we came out on the Friday of Christmas week (and this week). Sorry, but we did tell you! F Troop back to normal next week. ***** The next Community Board 14 meeting is Tuesday, January 8. Note that it will be at Bayswater Jewish Center (2355 Healy Ave) instead of the Knights.

Harbor Bakery’s Babka Cake Recipe The good ol’ Harbor Bake Shop, or known more simply as the Harbor Bakery, hasn’t been around in about 15 years, however the craving for their baked goods still remains. Dear Editor: Re: the New Year's Boyleing Points column, Mr. Bartlett's most famous quote is, "Hey, buddy, can I quote that in my book?" I've noted, over the decades, that most things that are quoted are, as stated by you, from Anonymous. Add to that, Shakespeare and the Bible. A select few are from "Joe, in accounting." Shop 116 Dear Editor: Beach 116th may have a brighter future ahead with the development of One Sixteen and other residential buildings, but our local businesses are struggling to stay afloat in the meantime and it shows with the closure of Blue Bungalow, Paninico and Dunkin' Donuts late last year. Even though winter is the slow season, rent still needs to be paid. Gift shop Lola Star could soon be another empty storefront. Lets prevent another closure. Shop local and support your local stores all year-round! Jen Brown

Rockaway Locals…You Tell Us! Get Your Voice Heard! In this feature, reporter, Kami-Leigh Agard pounds the streets to give locals a voice on what’s happening and relevant for residents of the Rockaway metropolis. Your Voice…Your Community…Your Platform This week’s topic: Millions of people from all walks of life rang in the New Year, reflecting on the past 12 months, and how they can be even better in the New Year. The Rockaway Times asked four owners of new local businesses that just opened their doors in 2018, about their thoughts on 2019 — plus resolutions and any plans they wanted to share with the community concerning the new year.

Local Movers & Shakers Review 2018 & Express Hopes for 2019 By Kami-Leigh Agard
Rockaway is a little town that could, with movers and shakers, who behind the scenes, dedicatedly work hard on not just demanding, but getting what their beloved waterside community needs. In this Rockaway Times three-part series, from various civic associations, nonprofits, and the business community — these shapers give a review of 2018, and what they hope for in 2019. In this second installment, we spoke to the Rockaway Theatre Company (RTC). Yes! — Rockaway has its own theatre company, and 2019 marks 22 years, the RTC has been showcasing high quality Broadway-esque theater, right here on the peninsula. This team of dedicated theater lovers has definitely not waited in the wings to show what the peninsula has to offer. They’ve been through hell and back but still manage to majestically strut their stuff, bringing Broadway theater for all ages to Rockaway. According to longtime RTC producer, Susan Jasper, RTC
ADVANCED HEARING AID TECHNOLOGY
began with a humble start with artistic director, John Gilleece, who, like Jasper, a 30-plus-year retired schoolteacher in NYC’s school system and a lover of theater, wanted to bring his passion for the performing arts to Rockaway. “John and I worked together as fellow teachers. When he retired, he invited me to join in with his mission with the RTC. I promised that once I retired, I would. He simply wanted to bring the performing arts to Rockaway. Two years later, I joined the RTC, and I’ve never stopped working towards John’s
dream and ultimately the RTC’s mission,” Jasper said. According to Jasper, RTC, along with the Rockaway Artist Alliance (RAA), began its pioneering beginnings at the Park Place Seaport Theatre in a nondescript building on the beach end of Beach 116th Street. Both the RTC and RAA showcased their art, however, the venue was suddenly shut down in September of 1997. However, though this was a crushing blow for both organizations, this setback presented an opportunity for a larger and per-
manent space that became the crown jewel at Fort Tilden. “Twenty years ago, the National Park Service (NPS) —Gateway National Recreational Area in Fort Tilden had all these old dilapidated buildings from WWII that had been left vacant after the war. When the military pulled out, the buildings were empty and deemed condemned because they were falling apart. At the time, both the RAA with Geoff Rawling, and RTC were working out of the Beach 116th Street location. However, once we lost our home and got word from Gateway that these buildings were vacant, though inhabitable, we immediately seized the opportunity. Gateway gave us permission to use a building in exchange for restoration and renovation. With permission from our new partners, RTC began working on what would become one of our most critical expansions, the move to the Post Theatre (Building T-4) at Fort Tilden. Continued on page 15

For Less Than $200
How can a hearing aid that costs less than $200 be every bit as good as one that sells for $2,250 or more? The answer: Although tremendous strides have been made in Advanced Hearing Aid Technology, those cost reductions have not been passed on to you. Until now... MDHearingAid® uses the same kind of Advanced Hearing Aid Technology incorporated into hearing aids that cost thousands more at a small fraction of the price. Over 300,000 satisfied MDHearingAid customers agree: High-quality, FDA-registered hearing aids don’t have to cost a fortune. The fact is, you don’t need to spend thousands for a hearing aid. MDHearingAid is a medical-grade hearing aid offering sophistication and high performance, and works right out of the box with no time-consuming “adjustment” appointments. You can contact a licensed hearing specialist conveniently online or by phone — even after your purchase at no cost. No other company provides such extensive support. Now that you know...why pay more?
Can a Hearing Aid Delay or Prevent Alzheimer’s and Dementia? A study by the National Institute on Aging suggests older individuals with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop Alzheimer’s and dementia over time than those who retain their hearing. They suggest that an intervention — such as a hearing aid — could delay or prevent this by improving hearing!

LOCAL MOVERS & SHAKERS REVIEW 2018
Continued from Page 13
“The building’s conditions were horrendous. There was no running water, working bathrooms, heat or air conditioning — but the community came out to help us. The Post Theatre building at Building T-149 boasted a raised stage, limited wing space and a large seating area, but can you imagine the conditions? But we made it work,” Jasper said. The Post Theatre was once a movie theater on the Fort Tilden Army Base and since its closure had long gone unused. The RTC entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Gateway, granting the RTC permission to perform live theatre in exchange for restoring and renovating the building. Over the next nineteen years, renovations to the Post Theatre would include removing seats that were damaged beyond repair, cleaning and refurbishing all 234 seats in the house, extending the movie theatre stage to make
FRIDAY, JANUARY 4, 2019 room for actors, installation of curtains, a proscenium arch, installation of modern theatrical lighting and sound systems, a complete overhaul of the dressing room, a roof replacement, installation of commercial heating and air conditioning, and a complete renovation of the restrooms and lobby. “Guys from the Graybeards, local tradesmen — everyone came out to help renovate for RTC and RAA. Our first production at the RTC’s new Fort Tilden location was in 1998. The conditions were awful, but like they say in theater, ‘the show must go on,’ and it did. After tireless years of volunteers’ efforts, we got a beautiful theater completed with dressing rooms, refurbished stage space and more, including heat; and for the surrounding communities, RTC became known for producing high quality theater in a community that is not just strong, by resilient,” Jasper said. But then in 2012, the storm that made Rockaway a major headline in the news hit. Hurricane Sandy served Rockaway a major dose of setbacks and horror, and
Page 15
the RTC was not spared, but like the rest of the community, with a stoic band of volunteers, they resurrected. “Hurricane Sandy was just another brick that helped us build into the special organization we are today. We are very fortunate as being one of the few theater companies in the five boroughs, that have our own home base — a theater we can rehearse in, that is solely ours.” Jasper said. Today, RTC has won numerous accolades, including Queens Best of Borough’s Best Local Live Theater and a special commendation from the Breezy Point Cooperative Business Association. RTC also hosts a children’s (12 and under) and teens’ (ages 13 to 18) theater program. “Every year, our youth program does amazing shows. People continually rave to us, ‘I can’t believe this is a children’s theater group.’ One of our kids, Andrew Barth Feldman, hot on the heels of winning the 2018 National High School Musical Theatre Award, will make his Broadway debut in the Tony-winning hit, ‘Dear Evan Hansen.’ He’s the youngest actor
taking on the title role. Another one of our alums, Hayden Signoretti, got casted for a Broadway show, “Finding Neverland.” Our youth are so amazing, I encourage all parents to give their children a chance to see if they like theater, whether it’s performing on stage or just appreciating the art,” Jasper said. For 2019, RTC has five major productions in the works including: A Comedy of Five Tenors, Doubt, Newsies, The Great Gatsby and Spelling Bee. For Jasper, she just wants people who love theater, performing and/or singing, to audition for the plays. “People love coming to our shows, and love our regular performers. However, I think it would be nice to see new faces. RTC is a nurturing space, and we sincerely want to see our theatrical community grow. None of us get paid for the work we do. This is all for love of not just theater, but our community. We all are getting up there in age, and we want a younger wave to come in and continue our legacy as a mainstay for theater right here in Rockaway.”

Beach 119th Street Dip With the air temperature nearing 60 degrees and the water a brisk 45, Tuesday’s New Year’s Day Plunge was a huge improvement from last year’s dip in the teens. This year on Beach 119th, the great weather made for some big smiles as residents and neighbors marched down the
block to the beat of drums as they got ready to plunge. More than 150 people ran into the ocean and ran out just as fast, but stuck around to take a few snaps, providing proof of their participation in this longtime tradition to ring in the New Year. Here are a few highlights.

Haym Salomon was a Polish-born, American Jew during the Revolutionary War. Among his many other contributions to the colonies, Salomon subscribed heavily to government loans, endorsed notes, gave generously to soldiers, and equipped several military units with his own money. In addition, he made private loans to prominent statesmen such as
James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe, from whom he would not take interest. According to some reports, the government owed Salomon more than $600,000, though the exact amount is unknown. At the time of his death in 1785, Salomon was penniless.

You Have So Many Beautiful Reasons to be Happy! Love life and all that it has to offer. When you begin to awaken from your sleep, silently say thank you God for another day. Try your best to fill it with good intentions and positive thoughts. Some days are better than others, but remain confident that each day is a precious gift. My dearest neighbor Joan Morrs always has the greatest mantras. Speaking to her one evening, she said, “You can either choose to exist or live.” In spite of having much loss her in life, she chooses to live. Joan is a woman who lives life well and
will have no regrets when she sets off into the sunset. Thank you, Joan, for your inspiration and friendship. You are a bright star for so many. Keep shining your light. “Life is available only in the present moment.” Thich Nhat Hanh. What are your present moments? Surfing the internet, viewing social media, watching TV, going for a leisurely walk, taking a yoga class, going to the gym, visiting a friend or relative and spending some quality moments with that person. Alexander Brown Timlin, taught me how to be present each day with the ones I love and enjoy the good times along with the bad times. We all change. Nothing stays the same but we can choose to be happy in this journey. Strive to be content. Each day is an opportunity to learn and create. The simple act of being friendly to a stranger can ignite an unexpected conversation that fills one with happiness. With each new day it is helpful to approach challenges and experiences with an open mind. We are all capable of being happy. Stepping outside our comfort zone to be uncomfortable is what allows us to grow and be proud of ourselves. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is a book helping to guide us in life to live with compassion and love for all beings. Book One, Sutra #33 is my favorite one. The four keys to happiness are as follows: By cultivating attitudes of friendliness towards the happy, compassion for the unhappy, delight in the virtuous, and disregard toward the wicked, the mind-stuff retains its undisturbed calmness.
The Rockaway Times Desire to have serenity of mind and happiness is sought out by so many. Keep these four keys close to your heart and when you need them, you will have the proper key to open the lock. The following was sent to me by a very dear friend. “Hello, welcome to Flight #2019. We are prepared to take off into the New Year. Please make sure your Attitude and Blessings are secured and locked in an upright position. All self-destructive devices should be turned off at this time. All negativity, hurt and discouragement should be put away. Should we lose Altitude under pressure, during the flight, reach up and pull down a Prayer. Prayers will automatically be activated by Faith. Once your Faith is activated, you can assist other passengers. There will be NO BAGGAGE allowed on this flight. The Captain (GOD) has cleared us for takeoff. Destination GREATNESS.” Happy 2019! “And so, may a slow wind work these words of love around you, an invisible cloak to mind your life.” John O’Donohue

Medical History
There are echoes of the past in medicine as well as in society. American history is full of regrettable occurrences and actions, for example slavery, the Civil War, segregation and Jim Crow, and internment of Japanese Americans following the attack on Pearl Harbor, just to name a few. Likewise, medicine has had its own share of tragedies. Let’s take the case of Dr. J. Marion Sims. Dr. Sims was born in South Carolina in the early nineteenth century. He became a physician and a surgeon. In the 1840s, he operated on sick slave women. Even though ether had been invented, it was very scarce, so he did
not use anesthesia. He operated on some women as many as 30 times over a four-year period. This was a common occurrence in the antebellum South. Sick slaves were of no use to their owners and therefore of no value either. The owners would enter into a contract with a doctor who would treat the sick slaves. Slaves obviously didn’t consent to their living conditions, nor did they consent to any surgery. With the winds of civil war swirling in the South, in 1854 Dr. Sims moved to New York. He made no secret of his work with slave women, in fact he praised their courage and their contributions to medical knowledge. Here

in New York, he founded the New York Women’s Hospital and established an international reputation. He founded the American Society of Gynecology and is regarded as the father of modern gynecology. He also served as president of the American Medical Association. After his death in 1883, statues to him were erected in Columbia, South Carolina, Birmingham, Alabama, and here in NYC in 1894. Except for a brief period in the 1930s, his statue stood in Bryant Park until very recently when the powers that be in the City moved it to Green-Wood cemetery, his final resting place. Philosopher George Santayana said that “those who can’t remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” William Faulkner once wrote, “the past is never dead, it isn’t even past.” There is often talk of removing statues of those whose history is now considered, at least by some, to be offensive. For example, Robert E. Lee. Those who clamor for the removal of statues remembering him probably aren’t aware of the fact that he owned no slaves (although his
wife did) and considered slavery offensive. In the time before the Civil War, many held more allegiance to their state than to the small federal government, which is why when Virginia seceded, he chose to follow his state. There is no disputing the fact that he was a brilliant general and a respectable gentleman. As for Dr. Sims, which Dr. Sims do we choose to remember – the one who operated on sick slaves or the world-renowned surgeon? NYC chose the former. By the way, his statues in Columbia and Birmingham still stand today. My reference to echoes of the past in is reference to a deeply disturbing study released a few years ago. A leading institution took a survey of their medical students and found that many held notions that the blood of black people clotted at a different rate than white people, black people’s skin is thicker, and black people have a lower sensitivity to pain. All ghosts of bygone racism. Sad. Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com

The Literary Chick Review: Bird Box by Josh Malerman Something horrifying – By Marilyn Macron, beyond horEsq. aka rifying. A Maria Cowhey glimpse and your mind unhinges. You attack, rabidly, indiscriminately, destroying everything, even those you once loved. And in your uncontrollable frenzy, you will finish the job on yourself. That is the horror in Josh Malerman’s Bird Box. But first, there is the woman, gaunt, standing in the kitchen, thinking. She peers through her window at the heavy fog outside. Will it give her and her two young children the cover they need to escape the abandoned house they have lived in, alone, for four years? Will the fog last? They need the cover to go 20 miles downriver in a rowboat to find safety. And even in the fog, they must go blindfolded to escape the thing that is following them, the thing they should not – must not – see.
Bird Box deftly snaps between present and past to tell this tale of survival against psychological and physical terror. It flashes back to when Malorie, pregnant with her first child, and Malorie’s sister hear the initial reports of these occurrences, originally termed as The Russia Report due to sightings there, begin being reported. Cut to a man, driving. The passenger, his friend, asks him to pull over, and when the car has stopped, he rips the driver’s lips off with his fingernails. Cut to a woman dispassionately burying her children – alive – before slitting her wrist with shards of broken dishes. Two elderly sisters out on a leisurely walk start biting people. They mutilate a friend who tries to stop them. Before every terrifying turn, the attackers had seen something that seems to have set them off. But what? A national curfew is ordered. People are instructed to blacken
their windows, lock their doors, stay inside. But a siege is a siege, and there are cracks in the barricades. Malorie’s sister is found dead in the bathtub, eyes wide open, a scissors sticking out of her chest. Pregnant Malorie runs and comes across a house, already occupied by Tom, a kindly former teacher, Jules, seemingly second-in-charge, Felix, a shivering remnant of a man, Cheryl, a hard as nails survivor, and Don, an ambivalent presence. They agree to let her live with them. Supplies of food and water are stored in the basement, but these are finite, and blindfolds must be worn when they go out to forage. They are joined by two more people looking for safety, sweet Olympia, who is also pregnant, and Gary. Gary tells the story of having fled the safe house he was in after one of his housemates, a man named Frank, decided that all the killings were simply psy-
chosomatic reactions and tore down the curtains. Malorie is safe with this band. But is there evidence that not everyone is who they seem to be? Josh Malerman is a singer/ songwriter for the Detroit band High Strung. His Bird Box was recently made into a film starring Sandra Bullock and John Malkovich that is available on Netflix. Paintings by artist Lily Morris, who was recently interviewed by The Literary Chick, will be featured in the film. The Literary Chick’s Holy Trinity of Books, Music, and Art are all here for this one, how can you go wrong?

The Broad Channel Shamrocks Pee Wee Division may have fell one game short of the Super Bowl, but they still had a great season that was both rewarding and worthy of reward. And that reward was to see the big guys play in the NFL at a recent NY Jets game. According to defensive coach, Edwin Williams, “Early in the season when we had a losing streak and I saw these sad young faces, I had a chat
with them. I told them if they play hard and give me 100 percent, win lose or draw, Coach Keith Matone and I will take them to an NFL game. The "killer bees" kept their promise and I kept mine. We went to see the NY Jets vs. the Houston Texans and had a great time. I would like to thank Gerry Romski of Benjamin Beechwood and Congressman Gregory Meeks for making this possible.”
