It’s a New Year Baby! Not long after 2023 began, Rockaway natives Samaria and Raymond Rodriguez-West brought a brand-new baby into the world at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. Baby boy Noah was born at 3:03 a.m. on January 1, weighing 6 pounds 11 ounces and measuring slightly over 19 inches.
“Baby Noah is the first baby of the New Year at St. John’s Episcopal. We wish an abundance of health, joy, and happiness for the new growing family! Congratulations! And a Happy New Year to our community!” St. John’s said in its announcement.
St. John’s showered baby Noah with gifts to celebrate the mo-
mentous occasion of his arrival. Gifts, generously donated by the St. John’s ICARE Foundation and the hospital, included diapers, baby books, baby care essentials, a stroller and car seat, a diaper bag, clothing and a baby monitor, courtesy of Jzanus–a Long Island-based company and a valued business partner working with the Episcopal Health Services, Inc. team and supporting the St. John’s ICARE Foundation.
“We are very pleased with the care that we received at St. John’s,” Mr. West stated. Ms. Rodriguez echoed his sentiments by saying, “We highly recommend delivering your baby at St. John’s. It was an excellent experience.”

Broad Channel Hearing
By Michael Tubridy
A public hearing will be held Friday, January 6 at 10:00 a.m. at VFW Hall, 713 Shad Creek Road, Broad Channel.
The purpose of the hearing is to dispute New York State DEC's determination that all the lots in Broad Channel did not legally exist until 1984, when they were purchased from the City.
This determination limits the Upland lot coverage to 20% including decks, sidewalks and all structures located on the property.
Due to this determination any increase in lot coverage over 20% requires a permit from New York State DEC.
This hearing concerns my property on Shad Creek Road. I will be presenting docu-
ments and records at the hearing providing proof of the lawful existence of this lot.

FOUNDER/PUBLISHER EMERITUS
Hello!
Dear Readers,
When the idea of introducing ourselves and saying “hello” to the readers was first floated, our immediate thought was, “how the heck do you tell people that you’re replacing the founder of something?!” The simple answer, of course, is that there is no replacing Kevin. Not now, not ever.
Kevin Boyle started this endeavor in 2014 and, for over eight years, poured his heart and soul into making it, in our humble opinion, the best newspaper in Rockaway.
Luckily, our goal is not replacement. Why would we ever want to replace such a cornerstone of
the community? Rather, our goal is to continue the mission of The Rockaway Times. Our goal is to expand on the incredible work that Kevin and the entire Rockaway Times team has done for the past eight years.
It is our intention to continue to entertain and inform the people of Rockaway, on a weekly basis - First and Free!
Our new group consists of life-long locals. We know Rockaway. We know it is a special place and we know that it’s the people that make it so. The playwright, Arthur Miller, said “a good newspaper, I suppose, is a nation talking to itself.” Well, we hope to be a commu-
nity talking to itself. We hope to be the place where folks feel they can come and express their thoughts and ideas. Whether they be about how to improve local business, how to keep the boardwalk a safe place, how to clean up some under-tended-to area, or whatever it may be, we hope that this is where you come to do it.
To The Rockaway Times’ beloved advertisers, we are nothing without you. We hope that you will support this paper moving forward, just as you have done in the past, as we strive to accomplish what we have laid out here before you.
And in the same vein, we hope that our readers will continue to support our advertisers as vigorously as they have done in the past. As always folks, don’t be afraid to mention that you saw their ad in The Rockaway Times! (See, nothing has changed!)
Before we wrap up this exercise in verbosity, we would like to take a minute to say a few
words to Kevin Boyle. On behalf of the entire community, thank you. Rockaway is a better place today, in part, because of the work you’ve done. We know it’s time for you to move on to bigger and better things and, while we are excited to see what’s next, we are definitely sad to see you go. Of course, this is not “goodbye,” this is “see ya ‘round.” You know the door is always open… and if it’s not, you still have a key.
So, to make a long story short, we would just like to say, “hello!”

Special Editorial: ALMA’s Antics Arise Again
By Barbara Buffolino, President of SHAFT
It is exactly one year that the Surfside Tenant Association (SHAFT) wrote the first editorial to raise awareness of the potential Alma Development proposal. Well, it is a reality now with Alma presenting the details involved in the development proposal to small meeting groups. It is projected to engulf the current Surfside property and the homes of the 2,000+ residents by building on the property along Beach 105th Street, Rockaway Beach Blvd., up along Beach 108th Street and all the space between the existing three Surfside buildings.
It is even more enormous and dense than shown on this rendering which has been floating around since last year.
It is comprised of multi-level buildings - townhouses, towers, a new hotel, parking garages, retail and community facilities. It
includes 2,000+ housing units, which will bring an estimated 6,000 more people and their cars to the area. Of course, this is in addition to the already existing residents.
Not only will this project immediately impact the quality of life for the Surfside residents, but it will also be the demise of the existing Rockaway community.
We all know that the roadways on the peninsula are limited and already taxed. We saw what happens to the roads when a rising tide and storm meet. So commuting is generally a horror but what about during an emergency? How is everyone safely evacuating? The infrastructure is already compromised. Where is the hospital? Schools? Electric, water, sewage utilities?
Alma is trying to divide and conquer the community with small meeting groups with exclusive invites, but I say we need to Unite and Fight!
We need the Rockaway community to stand with us to oppose this development. The proposal is following the City Planning ULURP (Uniform Land Use Review Procedure) process for approval. Now is the time to voice your opposition. In the next few months, the proposal will be presented at Community Board and Land Use Committee meetings. The Rockaway community needs to show up. But for now we need you to take a moment to call or write our local electeds so they hear from the community.

Happy 2023! How’s your resolution going?
Woah, this is weird! New year, new publishers of the Rockaway Times. We hope the transition will be seamless for everyone! With the Rockaway Times’ “Dream Team” remaining intact we have very high hopes. As for us newbies, take it easy on us, will ya?!
For some, the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day can be notoriously disorienting. What day is it? Where am I? When will my next Rockaway Times be delivered? Hopefully that holiday season fog is beginning to lift, and you are settling back into your routines.
As per tradition, on Sunday
morning, hundreds across the peninsula took part in New Year’s Day Polar Plunges. Plunges were held on Beach 145th, 127th, 119th, 108th and 67th amongst others. Thankfully, this week felt almost 50 degrees warmer than the previous week! That being said, the water temperature was still a frigid 40 degrees. Some say that the warmer air actually makes the plunge worse because the drastic change in temperature is such a shock to the body. Although the logic is, who wouldn’t take 50 degrees over -10 degrees any year!? Check out some photos from a few of the plunges on pages 16, 17, 18 and 28. *****
It’s always nice getting the affirmation from our readers that we made the right decision on certain things. Keith “Bugsy” Goldberg being named the 2022 Rockaway Times Person of the Year certainly received that and more! The response was overwhelming and obviously very well deserved. As one person commented on Facebook, “the best part of Rockaway is hav-
ing Bugsy!” Not sure how we will be able to top Bugsy next year. Any suggestions? Let us know! *****

Yesterday, almost two full months after Election Day in New York, the contest for New York State’s 23rd Assembly district was finally decided. After having previously been separated by just one vote, Stacey Pheffer Amato has been declared the winner by less than 20 votes. Congratulations to Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato. The hotly contested count made its way to the courts where certain disqualified votes were reinstated. Hopefully, the new Assemblywoman’s first course of action will be to find a way to expedite this process in the future. As Sullivan quipped last month, “In the state of Georgia, 3.5 million voters have now had two elections in a month. New York State’s 23rd Assembly District of 32 thousand voters continues to drag on.” Two months is too long.

Pheffer Amato Declares Victory in AD23 Race
By Katie McFadden
Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato has won the election for Assembly District 23. On Wednesday afternoon, January 4, the final votes that were ordered to be counted in various court cases, were tallied and Pheffer Amato came out on top with 15 votes, making her the winner over Republican challenger Tom Sullivan, nearly two months after election day.
According to Pheffer Amato’s campaign, Stacey will retain the seat she’s held since 2017. As we go to press, the result still has to be certified by the NYC Board of Elections to make it official, but all votes were counted and point to Pheffer Amato as the winner by just 15 votes. And while that may seem close, after the hand
recount in mid-December, prior to the ballots that were ordered to be counted in various court cases, Pheffer Amato was leading by only a single vote.
These results, which come just two months shy of when the election was held on Tuesday, November 8, are a flip of where
things stood on Election night, after 94% of the votes were counted.
On the night of November 8, Tom Sullivan, a Breezy Point resident with 28 years in financial services, 29 years with the U.S. Army and 10 years as a small business owner, was on top by 246 votes.
However, with ballots still needing to be counted in such a close race, neither candidate was able to declare victory on election night. And so began a two-month messy process, that involved absentee and affidavit ballots, court filings and appeals, rejected ballots and recounts, to determine the winner.
After the remaining ballots were counted, by November 22, Sullivan only had a three-vote lead over Amato. But a week prior to that, Amato’s campaign had already filed a lawsuit demanding
a recount. As part of that lawsuit, another issue was brought up by Amato regarding 94 ballots that were invalidated by the NYC Board of Elections because they weren’t properly sealed in their election envelopes. In early December, Hon. Joseph Risi of the Queens Supreme Court ordered the BOE to officially count the 94 ballots that had been invalidated. Sullivan appealed this decision in the Brooklyn Appellate Court, with the hopes that this ruling would be overturned. On December 13, four judges of that court decided the 94 ballots should be considered, but in order for them to be counted, they would have to go through the curing process that the BOE failed to do originally.
Meanwhile, Pheffer Amato’s

100th Pct Community Council December Meeting Recap
By Katie McFadden
The last 100th Precinct Community Council meeting of 2022 was full of tips on how the community can stay safe going into the new year and every day.
The meeting, held on Zoom, on Wednesday, December 28, kicked off with Community Council president Kathy Heavey providing updates on the Council’s movie night with Santa, acknowledging those affected by recent flooding and making mention of a recent local newspaper article recapping the previous meeting, which said the meeting mostly focused on issues from other agencies. “The council is here to listen to all concerns and issues and that involves more than one agency,” Heavey said in response to the article's commentary.
Wednesday’s meeting was full of information from various members of the NYPD, including the 100th Precinct's Crime Prevention Officer Jason Farrell, who provided tips on how to stay safe on New
Year’s Eve. He then touched on the uptick in thefts from parked vehicles around the precinct and reminded people to keep their vehicles locked, park them in welllit areas and to not leave valuables inside them.
Detective Spencer Strauss of the 100th Precinct, who focuses on burglaries and grand larcenies, then warned about a very serious issue involving check washing.
He suggested that people who mail checks to pay bills or for other reasons, should only place this type of mail in mailboxes inside of the local post offices, as there has been an increase in people fishing through mailboxes in search of mail with checks or paperwork that includes personal information that can be used to steal identities and open things such as credit cards and even take out
various loans in someone’s name.
Local resident Scott Ruscillo responded to this saying this very thing has been happening not only to himself, but to various neighbors in the residential building he manages in Rockaway Park.
Ruscillo says a group of young men have repeatedly targeted his building, using a federal mailbox key to open the mailboxes for the entire building, and taken all of the mail in the building. As a result, Ruscillo had two checks of his that were check washed, with one check for $190 being turned into a check for $19,000 and stealing that money from him. Three of his tenants also had issues with people opening credit cards in their name and other similar incidents after their mail was stolen. “I’m assuming this is happening in other parts of Rockaway,” Ruscillo said. “This is just one example of how bad things can be when someone steals your mail.” Continued on page 11

100TH PCT COMMUNITY COUNCIL DECEMBER MEETING RECAP
Ruscillo said that while the 100th Precinct has been great about responding to the issue, the U.S. Postal Police have not contacted him or investigated this incident. Detective Strauss said he’s hopeful that the Postal Police will be cooperative in investigating this issue as they have more power in this federal crime.
In another fraud incident, Strauss informed people to be aware of their surroundings while using ATMs. There have been incidents of people looking over seniors’ shoulders while they’re at the ATM and taking note of their pin number. This information is then used to swipe their bank accounts. Since the thieves have the pin numbers, Strauss said it has been difficult for people to get their money back. “Once they have the pin to your account, banks are reluctant to hand you back the mon-
ey,” Strauss said.
Next up, 100th Precinct community partner Danny Ruscillo made mention of the increase in crimes occurring on the beach blocks from Beach 113th to Beach 117th and suggested more be done to approach this. “I know you’re doing all you can, but it’s outrageous between the knives and beatings and domestic violence. I feel it’s only getting worse,” Ruscillo said. Heavey suggested that another meeting be held with the owners of the local SROs to try to address this. Later in the meeting, 100th Precinct Deputy Inspector Carlos Fabara said he would be open to meeting with them again, although similar meetings with the SRO owners have been done before.
Fabara then provided crime stat updates for the 28-day period. “For the 28-day period, we’re down in major crime 3.8%. It’s nice to get that little win. We put those little wins together and that’s how we make it through,” Fabara said. Murders, rapes and robberies remained flat, at 0 vs 0,
1 vs 1 and 1 vs 1 respectively. Robberies were down 1 vs 2 and felony assaults were down 5 vs 11. There was an increase in grand larceny auto with 3 vs 1 and grand larceny is up 14 vs 10.
Fabara said that the precinct has improved their response time by 12%, which was the largest reduction in response time for the borough. He said two gun arrests were made, related to a shooting on Beach 90th. There were no shootings in the 28-day period, and for the year, overall, the precinct was down with 7 vs 10 shootings last year. One shots fired incident, that happened three months prior, was reported in this last 28-day period, but there were no new incidents.
Fabara also announced some personnel changes. Three new officers are coming to the precinct. There have also been some promotions and shifts. Detective Briales of the Domestic Violence unit was promoted to second grade detective. Detective Connelly from the public safety team was promoted to detective specialist. A public safety officer was
transferred to another unit and PO Laboda, an NCO for Sector Adam has been transferred and Fabara is in the process of replacing her.
Speaking more on vehicle breakins, Fabara said there have been patterns, with eight hits between Beach 90th and 101st and others.
One person doing these break-ins was arrested during a shooting/ robbery gun arrest. Fabara also made mention of the U-Haul that was recovered with packages stolen from the neighborhood. The Precinct delivered these packages on Christmas Day. No arrests have yet been made. Fabara said the precinct is continuing efforts to work with the community to improve the neighborhood overall. This includes starting to utilize the Neighbors app, operated by Ring, so the precinct can obtain Ring camera footage and information from people who utilize that service, to help solve crimes.
As the 100th Precinct Community Council goes on winter break, there will be no January meeting. The next meeting will be February 22.

PHEFFER AMATO
DECLARES VICTORY IN AD23 RACE
Continued from Page 9
team had filed another lawsuit in the Queens Supreme Court, asking that 14 more ballots that were rejected as “over-votes” because voters had bubbled in a name and then wrote in the same name, be reinstated. Hon. Risi decided on December 23, that those votes should be counted.
The ballots that needed to be cured had to be submitted to the Board of Elections by January 3 to be counted and on Wednesday, January 4, the BOE tallied in those cured ballots and others ordered to be counted in the court decisions.
According to a press release from Pheffer Amato's campaign, the counting of 74 newly-cured absentee ballots, four affidavit ballots, and 11 ballots with votes cast for the two candidates all added to Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato’s lead, securing her
re-election by a final margin of 15 votes.
“I know this has been a long and difficult process for everyone involved,” Pheffer Amato said. “The wheels of our American democracy do not always turn as quickly as we’d like, but preserving the integrity of our elections, ensuring the accuracy of the count, and defending the right of every voter’s voice to be heard is more important than expediency.
“I want to thank all of my supporters, my family and friends, and my constituents for their patience throughout this process, and I am humbled and honored to once again be selected by the voters to represent this wonderful district,” Pheffer Amato said. “We have important work to do to fight for our community and stand up for our working families. This election is over, and I look forward to continuing this work for my constituents.”
Sullivan did not release a statement regarding the results by press time.

Dear Editor:
As former residents of Surfside, and concerned citizens, a friend and I attempted to attend the presentation given by Alma Realty at the Rockaway Hotel on Wednesday, December 28, regarding the proposed development of several additional buildings on the existing Surfside property the existing Surfside property.
We were met outside the doors of the meeting room by an asso -
ciate of Alma Realty, Gijo George, who asked us if we’d received an email about the event. We stated that we hadn’t received an email but had heard about the meeting from someone who had. Mr. George stated, “We didn’t realize there would be so much interest.” He asked us to place our names and emails on a list and we would be contacted for a future presentation. There were at least 15-20 names of people on the list who had also showed up and were turned away. At least some were residents of Surfside.
I asked why, when there were 750 apartments in Surfside, were there only emails sent to select neighborhood residents (at least some of whom did not live in the complex), to attend a meeting in a room that only accommodated 30 people? And further, why did Alma think there would be little interest in a project that would have a major impact on Surfside’s thousands of residents? There were no answers given.
At that point, Mr. Nicholas Conway, in charge of the Surfside
complex for Alma Realty, poked his head out of the meeting room briefly. When we attempted to ask him if we could be let into the presentation, he said quickly to Mr George, “Take their names. Thank you for your interest,” and closed the door.
A few minutes later, we heard from someone who was in the meeting, that there were about a dozen people in attendance, with plenty of room for more.
It appears that there is an attempt to control who has access to these presentations. There are myriad issues with the existing buildings at Surfside, especially in terms of adequate heat and hot water. Rockaway should be very concerned about this seeming lack of transparency by the owners of this already troubled property.
Bernadette Maxfield Riis Frightening
Dear Editor: I know everyone focused on
Broad Channel and Far Rock after the storm but on a walk through Riis Park on Saturday, December 31, I was stunned by what a mess it is. The Feds really don’t take care of the park, I don’t see how a restaurant could ever move into that space. Here is what I saw.

Beach 145th Dips Into the New Year
There's no better way to ring in the new year in Rockaway than with a polar plunge, and with an air temperature of more than 50 degrees this New Year’s Day, Sunday, January 1, plungers came out in droves to give it a try. On Beach 145th, one of the biggest New Year’s Day plunge groups, an eager pup couldn’t wait to hit the 43-degree water, leading the charge before the noon countdown. Photos by Katie McFadden, Farley Schilling, Josh Steinberg and Brian Sullivan.

Beach 119 Takes the Plunge
The New Year’s Day Polar Plunge has become almost a rite of passage on Beach 119th. With such a large turnout, led in by a parade down the block to the beach, the Beach 119th plunge is one of the biggest yet. Just ahead of noon, one neighbor led the procession by drum as another proudly held an American flag. As the clock struck 12 p.m., the Beach 119th plungers ran into the chilly Atlantic on the 50-degree day. Photos

Dipping Around the Beach!
We put out a call for more plunge pics, as we couldn’t be everywhere at once, and boy, did you guys answer! Here are some more great pics sent to us from across the beach. From the New York Dipper Club’s big 9 a.m. dip on Beach 67th, to the Rockaway Hotel’s Beach 108th dip and Beach 127th’s annual plunge, many large groups took the dip together. But with such a big beach, the plunge can really happen everywhere. We also have dippers on Beach 121st, 128th, 134th, 137th and more here.

SUMMER EFFECTS
NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS AND STUFF
By Robin Shapiro
I’ve been writing a weekly real estate column for over 15 years. When I began the column, I was contacted by companies which write “ghost” articles for a fee. I turned them down and I write about my experiences as a broker. I try to keep the column interesting, “real,” and useful.
The summer season has mixed effects on the Rockaway real estate market. On the one hand, we are a beachfront community and the draw of the summer activities does bring people here for: beaches, swimming, cycling, running, surfing, organized teams for kids and adults (although the pandemic may crimp some of these this year; thankfully the “end” is in sight). On the other hand, some sellers are reluctant to sell during the summer because they enjoy the aforementioned activities and don’t want to give them up so fast!
pleasant weather and non-holiday periods. There are some buyers out there now for the “right” property which fits their needs. I have them as clients.
The pool of active buyers shrinks during the holidays. The cold weather makes some people hesitant to come out and view properties. Holiday travel causes some people to postpone house-hunting. Buyers during this time of year tend to be more motivated to buy (on average). They are less likely to be “curiosity” shoppers than people who house-hunt during more
It can be harder to sell real estate during the summer due to vacations by buyers and sellers alike. Summer activities can also occupy people instead of allowing them to focus on the home sale process.
Is selling your home one of your 2023 New Year’s Resolutions? If so, the proper “staging” of your home in an effort to present it in its best light can be crucial. I can help. If you need advice on tradesmen, mortgage brokers, lawyers, accountants, or clean out services, then call me.
The spring season has been generally good for our real estate market. There has been action across the board in all price categories with an emphasis on the range below $1 million (approx). Prices have firmed up within the framework of recent comparable sales and in some cases are creeping higher. Inventory levels remain very low. Call me, Love, Robin. 718-490-9463
I’d like to thank the wonderful Rockaway Times staff who do a superb job every week in helping me present my beautiful advertisement.

TERROR AT 30,000 FEET: SCREAMING KIDS ON A PLANE
By Bob Nesoff
Flying is always an adventure. Sometimes it’s great and other times even a short flight can seem like an around the world trip. One of the biggest problems on any airline is a child…or children…who scream, run around, kick the back of your seat and parents who ignore them.
Conde Nast, one of the better travel-oriented magazines just did a big piece on that problem and suggestions on how to handle the situation. Basically, there is no way. I know that from personal experience.
Some years back flying from Madrid to JFK on Spanish charter line, Spantax, we had literally eight hours of a symphony of twins taking turns letting everyone on board know that they didn’t want to be there. When one was quiet, the other began screaming. When that kid’s tonsils got raw, he quieted down and his brother took over. This went on for eight solid hours.
The flight crew did nothing to attempt to intervene. The parents pretended to be sleeping. That was akin to sleeping on a battlefield in the middle of an artillery barrage.
Then there was the time on the way back from Tahiti on Air France. All went well until we changed planes in Los Angeles and boarded an American Airlines jet. A missionary and his wife, along with several offspring, boarded. The wife and her daughter sat behind us. Apparently, the young girl wanted to test the seat back to determine how sturdy it was.
The flight attendants ignored it. I couldn’t because it was my seat back. I took it for as long as possible and eventually turned to the mother, who sat looking at the top of the cabin. She totally ignored all requests to stop the little monster.
There were no other seats
available on the flight and the little darling exercised as though she was training for the Boston Marathon. It was a test of endurance and they won.
On a flight back from the Dominican Republic, a grandmother was traveling with three of her grandkids. We were sitting in the gate area waiting to board, which was about an hour off. The grandkids, the boys about 11 or 12 and 15 or so, were tearing up the seating area. Grandma sat, doing something so that she could ignore them. The sister, about 17 or 18, was fairly quiet.
I told my wife not to worry since we were flying First Class and this classless family would, in all probability, be back in Cattle Class.
As a political reporter for a major daily newspaper, it was my job prior to elections to prognosticate the outcome. My record for picking election winners was probably about 60% at best. My prediction about where the Munster Family would be seated fell somewhere into that category.
We boarded and the girl and the older sibling sat in front of us. Grammy and her little hyper grandkid sat one row ahead on the other side. I opened the shade on the port hold and the
girl leaned over her seat and pulled it shut. I “banged” into her seat as I reopened it. She got the message.
It all quieted down as we taxied for takeoff. Quiet, that is, until we hit about 32,000 feet and the captain turned off the seat belt sign. That was the signal for the boys to get up and begin climbing on seats, banging into others (mine in particular) and running up and down the aisle. That went on for about 15 minutes before I totally lost it. The flight attendants had obviously gone totally blind and deaf.
There was only one thing to do. They left it up to me. In my best Army Staff Sergeant voice, I stood up and shouted “BASTA, enough!”
Grammy must have put in her hearing aides. Or maybe not because she could have heard me from another airplane. She got the message, and the little darlings were finally ordered to sit down and be quiet.
They glared at me, but they obviously never had their parents much less a former Green Beret Staff Sergeant glare back at them. They got the message.
OK, these are the stories. What can you do? The first thing is to attempt to speak to the adults traveling with the kids. On the
Spantax flight, we did nothing because it was obvious the parents were actually trying to quiet them. The children were young, and it was a losing battle. But at least they tried.
On the American flight, I tried to speak to the mother and was totally ignored. A request to the flight attendant was equally ignored. Something over the years we learned about the American Airlines flight attendants. But that’s for another article.
With the flight from the Dominican Republic, much the same as the American flight, the attendants ignored both the situation and the requests. That’s the time to take direct action. No cursing. No physical act that will get you in trouble. No vulgarity because then you become just as bad. But my action immediately got the message across in no uncertain terms.
After the flight, a letter to the CEO of the particular airline can bring results. No vulgarity. Just a simple retelling of what went on and what the crew did not (or did) do. That normally will bring a response and sometimes even an offering from the airline.
I hope you enjoy your next flight.

Community Board Applications Now Open
Want to help serve your community? Your chance to apply to be a member of Community Board 14 is now open. Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. is again accepting applications from qualified and civic-minded individuals interested in serving on their local community board.
As with the Borough President’s prior two iterations, the 2023 community board application can be filled out online, ensuring prospective applicants can complete the process quickly and easily, allowing for a more diverse applicant pool. The application requires neither notarization nor in-person delivery to the Queens Borough President’s Office.
“Government is at its most effective and impactful when people who come from and understand the needs of the communities it is sworn to serve are in positions of leadership. That’s what we’re actively working to create here in
Queens with our 14 community boards,” Richards said. “I look forward to building on the progress we’ve made to diversify and strengthen our boards over the last two years, and I strongly encourage anyone with an interest in public service to apply over the next six weeks.”
The application is available online at www.queensbp.org/communityboards, and the deadline to submit the form is Thursday, February 16. This deadline applies to both new applicants and existing community board members seeking an additional term. For the upcoming round of appointments, the two-year term of service will begin on Saturday, April 1, 2023.
Over the course of his administration, Borough President Richards has worked diligently to grow interest in community board membership and address numerous demographic inequities
around age, gender, background and more that have existed for years across Queens’ 14 community boards.
Combining the 2021 and 2022 community board processes, the Queens Borough President’s Office received a whopping 1,825 applications to serve on a community board, with both years shattering the pre-Richards single-year record for applications. The larger and more diverse applicant pools led to community board classes that were younger, more female and had greater percentages of members who identified as Latino/Hispanic, African American, immigrant, South Asian, East Asian/Pacific Islander and LGBTQIA+, among other characteristics.
There are 59 community boards citywide, including 14 in Queens, and each hold monthly full membership meetings. The boards play an important advisory role in
considering land use and zoning matters in their respective districts under the City’s Uniformed Land Use Review Procedure, in addition to holding hearings and issuing recommendations about the City budget, municipal service delivery and numerous other matters that impact their communities.
All Queens community board members are appointed by the Queens Borough President, pursuant to the City Charter, with half of the appointments nominated by the City Councilmembers representing their respective Community Districts. Each board has up to 50 unsalaried members, with each member serving a twoyear term.
All community board members who wish to continue serving on a board are required to reapply at the conclusion of their two-year term and are subject to review and reconsideration.

A BLISSFUL LIFE byJenniferKelleher
Blissful Life
Hello, and happy new year! My name is Jen Kelleher and I am the new owner at Ocean Bliss Yoga Studio. The new year often brings inspiration to make resolutions for a brighter future. In that spirit, let’s look at some of the key ingredients for turning good intentions into successful endeavors!
1. Heartfelt Intention: To achieve and surpass your expectations, resolutions must be backed by a heartfelt intention. Your intention is your ‘why’ and it provides the passion necessary to stay energized and on track. Why are you
wanting to take this step or make this change? As you consider the question, I invite you to continue dialing down your answer until you arrive at a feeling. What is the feeling you are wanting to gain through your change? More peace? Energy? Freedom? Confidence? Once you have your answer, you can use it as a little mantra anytime you need to recenter. Close your eyes and bring your attention to your breath in your body. Land in your heartspace and repeat your word softly to yourself on the rhythm of your breath.
2. Believe: Next comes convincing your mind that you are worthy of attaining your goals. Here is where it gets fun! Visualizing your success and getting your body to experience what it would feel like to have already arrived effectively bridges the gap between where you are and where you want to be. Let your mind observe your body having the feeling of your success. In a short time, the mind realizes that you actually already have what it was searching for. The more you do this practice, the more natural it becomes and the quicker you step into your worth and manifest your dreams.
3. Mental Focus: The mind is a powerful tool that magnifies whatever it points at. Being intentional with where and how you focus your mind’s attention gives you control over your life. Be careful to focus on abundance and not lack. Use affirmations like, “I am it, I have it, I embody it,” instead of, “I need it, I want it, I have to get it.” Daily meditation and yoga is a great way to help improve your ability to focus.
4. Presence: The final and most important part of being successful in your resolutions is presence. The only place that anything can ever happen is right here. If you are too caught up in the past or future the steps toward reaching your goal will feel like a grind and sustaining your results will prove to be very difficult. Deep and lasting transformation without the burnout is a result of meeting yourself where you are and tending to what is here with love and compassion. The future is always a reflection of our current level of presence. Remind yourself that there is nowhere to run to. You are always exactly as and where you are supposed to be and this version of you is perfect.
I invite you to join me at Ocean Bliss Yoga Studio this Friday, January 6 at 6 p.m. for a mini retreat to ring in 2023 with purpose and intention. Session includes restorative yoga, sound healing elements, cacao for heart-opening, crystals, intention setting, and journaling.

Brain Boosters
If you have read this column before then you know I am an advocate for maintaining brain activity as we age. I believe, and there is some research that backs me up, that the brain is like any muscle in the body – if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it. It is important to maintain both physical and mental activity as a means of aging well and avoiding dementia. When it comes to types of brain use, there is passive and active use. For example, watching something is a passive activity, whether it be TV shows or sports. What is preferable is choosing an activity that requires
active brain use – for example, reading, solving puzzles and games, and some non-violent video games. The more thought and analysis that is required the better. My favorites are crossword puzzles and Sudoku. That brings me to activities that do not have to wait until retirement, but for many may be lifelong and integral to who the person really is. Often, retirement allows the individual to increase time spent in these pastimes. I am speaking about hobbies. Hobbies run the gamut from indoor to outdoor activities and, in most cases, require mental planning
and input. Examples include bird watching, woodworking, knitting, and modeling to name a few. The word hobby may be a misnomer because it often describes something inconsequential to fritter away time. With most hobbies, nothing could be further from the truth however, so maybe we could call them avocations. The word “hobby” comes from the term to describe a farm horse that you ride at your leisure; or hobbyhorse, a small wooden horse large enough for only children to ride. Avocation describes something you do when not engaged in your vocation, which is the work you do to make a living. While the two words – hobby and avocation – at first might seem to be opposites, both suggest a calling having a deeper meaning or even part of your identity. Avocation might seem a bit too fancy, so I’ll stick with hobby. Studies have shown that hobbies are good for both physical and mental health. Having a hobby that requires movement like keeping a garden, hiking, yoga, or sports are a great way to stay in shape and may help lower your blood pressure, weight, waist size, and BMI. But the effect of
hobbies on mental health are even greater. These benefits include:
• Reduced stress. Hobbies are relaxing and reduce cortisol.
• Taking up a hobby challenges the brain.
• A hobby can broaden your outlook – it can stretch imagination and creativity.
• A hobby can help make new friends. Many hobbies have groups, which can help loneliness.
• A hobby can give a new sense of purpose – learning new skills, taking on challenges.
• A hobby compels you to take some time for yourself.
• It’s never too late to start a hobby. And finally, you don’t have to be good at it. Most hobbies have a learning curve, and everyone starts at the bottom. If you or someone you love are planning retirement, being active once retired is imperative. If you are thinking of taking up bread baking, ballroom dancing, gardening, oil painting, or any new hobby – good for you!

By Lou Pastina
At the end of last year, the publisher of this weekly announced that he was taking a step back from running the paper and passing the torch to the next generation. It was almost eight and a half years ago, that Kevin decided to tilt against windmills and start a business that everyone told him would fail. Of course, those are just the type of odds he likes. If you ever played against Kevin in the Graybeards, CYO or CHSAA, you know that he likes nothing better than to go in as the underdog and then drain 30-footers in your face. Then after the game, buy you a beer and tell you that you didn’t play so bad. Oh brother.
But in taking a chance and starting a paper by riding around on his bike, looking at Rockaway, and highlighting to our small neighborhood what was really going on, he invited us all to join the conversation and helped create a collective consciousness of what it means to live in Rockaway. Along the way, he invited so many different people to contribute to that cause, their articles highlighting the small-town nature that Rockaway really is, tucked neatly inside this huge city of New York. I was lucky enough to get an invitation to write a column way back then. His instructions were straight forward: you have 500 words. Topic I asked: anything you want but try to tie it to Rockaway. Pretty broad stuff.
This assignment came just after I was ending a 31-year run at work, and truly needed something to fill my imagination. So, as I rode my bike around Rockaway too, I began to see things I hadn’t really noticed, and people I didn’t give enough credit to, and appreciate the natural beauty of our peninsula. My wanderings took me all around Manhattan as well, and I reported on what I found there too. My articles, under the Lazer Speaks column, attracted the attention of more than a few, and people would ask where I come up with this stuff. One friend delighted in calling me Hemingway, but I am not sure it was meant as a compliment!
Not growing up in Rockaway, I didn’t have the network of school friends and relatives in the neighborhood that so many lifelong residents had. Participating in the Graybeards gave me entrée to a new group of friends here, but it was really Kevin’s invitation to write that made me feel like I was born and raised here. Although my mermaid will go to her watery grave claiming I am not a resident, just down for the day. She is, of course, right.
But back to Mr. Boyle and his paper, he introduced so many writers, on so many topics, created photo contests, awesome front pages, and headlines, that most people really look forward to seeing the paper every week. And he created something that can survive on its own now that
it will be in other hands. We are truly indebted to him for sharing his plucky and cranky writing style with stories about his family and mom, his phobias, that not only did we get a newspaper, but we got insight into one of Rockaway’s truly entrepreneurial spirits. Which reminds me, I am beginning to see a trend happening post-Covid, that is, people are making changes in their lives as they realize now is the time to live. Another entrepreneurial type also announced a transition, the founder of Ocean Bliss arranged for a transfer too, and into very capable hands. Transitions with businesses like these are so hard because normally their success is so tied to the personality of the founder. But in these cases, the founders built something that is so solid that it transcends the individual because it is so intrinsic to the community that they serve. You could say that is obvious, but it is not so obvious when you
start, and everyone tells you you’re nuts.
So, I think a huge thank you is owed to Mr. Boyle for having the courage, the perseverance, the tenacity, to go the distance and create a lasting good thing. His portfolio is littered with these types of start-up successes; look no further than the Graybeard basketball league, and the Graybeard organization. And now add The Rockaway Times to that list. He is like that entrepreneur from Philadelphia who also started a few newspapers in his time, Ben Franklin; Lord knows he has the hair. And I know he will hate this limelight, which makes it even more deserving, and fun to do. But seriously, from this humble columnist I extend the warmest thank you for allowing me the opportunity to grace your pages. And for sharing your thoughtful, caring adventure with us all. I am sure the next phase will be even more fun, and I hope we all get to ride with you again. It's been an honor, boss.

The answer is 11.
Multiples of 3 and 7 are possible scores. If you star t with 7 and keep adding 3, the numbers 10,13,16,19... also are possible scores. Now you have 3 numbers in a row: 12 (a multiple of 3), 13 and 14 (a multiple of 7) that are possible scores. Every number larger will then also be possible. (Keep adding 3 to each number: 12+3=15, 13+3=16,14+3=17)

Arverne is Home
By Cathy Deutsch
Arriving at The Arverne Projects in 1961 at the age of four is one of my earliest memories. Dad driving up to the office on move in day on Beach 54th Street to get the keys to our new apartment was a very exciting moment as it was all about new beginnings. New beginnings of wonders and freedom I could not have imagined which became among the best six years of my life before we moved to the just built Dayton East.
This cluster of buildings circling a huge playground felt like the protective arms of all the mothers that gathered on the surround of benches and had every opportunity for play a child could imagine. This new world also gave us an extended family of not only many relations but numerous friends whose doors were never locked. My two older cousins and my Mom's big sister and uncle lived upstairs which essentially was an extension of our own apartment. Their other grandmother, Mrs. Fingerman, lived on our floor. Her apartment always smelled like flounder and had cut glass bowls of tasty, wrapped candies in her living room which we were always invited to enjoy. But the best part was living across from the beach and gave my Dad access to do what he loved best— fishing.
Summer nights into early fall after work, he would often take his pole and reel down to the shore just to let the wind brush off the stress and dust of working in the hot grimy city. Some nights after dinner and often Sunday mornings, he would take me and my little brother with an extra pole or two, set deep into the wet sand as we scampered about chasing the feeding sandpipers. We would search out air bubbles in the wet sand that whispered from the living clams beneath which we would dig up for bait that we would watch him skillfully open with a pocketknife and put on our hooks.
He was not always an easy man.
Quick to temper, and overworked after a long commute, he didn't always have the patience or energy to play with us in traditional ways, but he always found time to engage us. We got a CB radio maybe when I was around 12 and as a family would huddle around the desk talking to truckers and listening to the police reports. When I wanted to take ballet classes, which required me to ride the bus alone downtown, Dad quelled my mother’s protests and told me to go. He showed up. Mom was nervous and always afraid of us hurting ourselves, but he pushed forward and taught us to swim, ride bikes, and climb fences, knowing we could weather a fall and achieve success. He believed in perseverance and had spunk. And so did I. He met me where I was and always challenged me to do better because he knew I could. He admired that which my Mom had no
patience for.
When I grew up and went out on my own, he always championed my choices even if they were not ones he expected. I’ve often thought of the Joni Mitchell line from “Let the Wind Carry Me,”— “Mama thinks she spoiled me, Papa knows somehow he set me free. Mama thinks she spoiled
me rotten. She blames herself But Papa he blesses me.” This held true to the end. When I acted in plays, he always rose up clapping, and when I opened a business at the age of 24, he funded me because he knew I had “the right stuff.” As he got older and mellowed, we became true friends and he always held my hand as we sat beside each other watching TV, often having deep conversations about the meaning of life, marriage, dreams and the strength it took to face death when he became ill. Now as a parent, I am faced with my fragilities and limitations and figure if he believed in me, I must be ok. My daughter will hopefully look back and find comfort in our “stories” as I have mine.
So many wonderful memories of my formative years happened while living in The Arverne Projects. Stories of family and ice cream trucks, of Wednesday night fireworks that rattled through our bodies like thunder and the scratch of sand on my sheets even after a shower. Through all my years with and without him I hear his voice always saying, “just do it.” He’d be happy to know I’m not done yet.

Man Killed on Beach 56th in Struggle With Police
By Katie McFadden
On Thursday, December 29, a 31-year-old man was shot and killed by police during a violent struggle.
According to NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell, who held a press conference after the incident, at around 8 p.m. on Thursday, members of the 101st Precinct neighborhood safety team were investigating 439 Beach 56th Street. When one sergeant and two officers approached the lobby, two males took off running. One was apprehended and arrested for narcotics. The second man was stopped at Beach 56th and Beach Channel Drive, where a “violent struggle ensued" for 20 seconds, as seen on external video. At some point during the struggle, an officer fired his weapon, striking the perpetrator, who was in possession of a loaded 40-caliber semi-automatic firearm. It is not believed that the perpe -
trator fired his gun. Chief Chell displayed a photo of the firearm that was recovered at the scene at the end of the conference on Thursday night.
After the perpetrator was hit in the torso, officers rendered lifesaving techniques before he and the officers were transported to an area hospital.
The man who was shot died of his injuries. He was later identi -

fied as 31-year-old Quayshawn Samuel.
According to the New York Daily News, it was not Samuel’s first run in with the law. In 2009, he was arrested for attempted murder during a shooting. He was then convicted of attempted murder in 2014 for a 2012 shooting. Samuel served almost eight years in a state prison following that conviction. He was released
in May and was on parole until June 2023.
On Tuesday, January 3, the New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation announced that it opened an investigation into the death of Samuel, as part of a normal procedure following an officer-involved shooting.
Spotted: Napping
On Wednesday, December 28, a three-alarm blaze broke out in a home in Arverne, leaving three families displaced before the New Year.
Roughly 30 FDNY units, including Engine 265, Ladder 121, Battalion 47, Engine 266, Engine 268 and Ladder 137 responded to the call around 1 p.m. The fire started
in the basement of the two-anda-half story home located at 327 Beach 68th Street. The fire spread to the attic. By 2:23 p.m., the fire was under control.
Fortunately, no one was injured, but three families were displaced. The cause is under investigation.

NJPW News and More
Happy New Year to all our readers! Let's get into the latest wrestling news!
Last week, we reported that former WWE Superstar Sasha Banks, now performing under her real name Mercedes Varnado, was scheduled to appeared at New Japan Pro Wrestling's (NJPW) Annual Event "Wrestle Kingdom" on January 4, 2023 in Tokyo, Japan. We now have new information that Mercedes will not be appearing alone, as we have heard, Tag Team partner former
WWE Superstar Naomi will be alongside Mercedes at the Wrestle Kingdom Event. But it doesn't end there, as we also heard reports that current WWE Superstar Bayley is also scheduled to be at the event. Now, we are not sure why Bayley is scheduled to appear, and if she will be acting in any official capacity for the WWE. But possibly seeing the three superstars coming out together in such a huge event will definitely be exciting.
Staying with New Japan Pro
Wrestling, its being reported that Will Ospreay, the current IWGP Heavyweight Champion, will not be accepting any offers from any other promotion, as his contract is scheduled to expire in another year. Will has said he is very happy working for NJPW, and he is paid very well by them. Will also enjoys living in the UK and doesn't seem like he wants to change that.
Now, still staying with NJPW, we have also reported that current WWE Superstar Karl Anderson, who is also the current NJPW "Never Open Weight Champion,” has gone on record saying that he praises WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H, for allowing him to complete in NJPW. I do feel it's a great move for Triple H to allow a contracted star to be able to work for another promotion. Hopefully, we will be seeing more of this inter-promotional work in the near future.
The Question of the Week comes from Johnny H. in Far Rockaway and he asked, "Who do you think will win between Will Ospreay and
Kenny Omega at Wrestle Kingdom?" Johnny, I'm going to say Kenny Omega beats Will Ospreay for the New Japan Pro Wrestling "IWGP Heavyweight Championship." I feel it's time for Kenny Omega to regain the crown and be champion once again. Thank you for your great question!
Keep sending those questions in to eavil183@yahoo.com and have a great weekend!
