proud parents, and Far Rockaway residents, Rose Paul and Guypson Paul. St. John’s showered baby Gaverson with gifts to celebrate the momentous occasion of his arrival. Gifts

included diapers, baby care essentials, a stroller and car seat, a diaper bag, clothing, and a baby monitor donated by Jzanus–a Long Island-based company. “We are very pleased with

Women Survive CarSplitting Crash

Two women are lucky to be alive after a New Year’s Day car crash in Broad Channel left a car split into two. Just hours after 2022 began on January 1, at around 5:30 a.m., a 2011 Infiniti G37x was traveling southbound on Cross Bay Boulevard at a high speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle not far from the Ja-

maica Bay Wildlife Refuge, according to NYPD. The car hit a number of items including a tree and bus stop sign before splitting into two after striking a utility pole. The back of the vehicle landed about 100 feet from the front. Miraculously, as FDNY arrived, the firefighters were shocked to find the occupants alive. However, Ladder 137 had to use a hurst tool to remove the passengers from the front end of the vehicle. The 25-year-old driver from Queens Village and another passenger were transported to Jamaica Hospital. The driver was in critical condition, but the passenger had non-life threatening injuries. The crash shut down the southbound lane of Cross Bay Blvd. for a while until the pieces of the vehicle were removed later in the afternoon. Photo by NYC Fire Wire.

Redistricting Commission Keeps Rockaway United By Katie McFadden

Sometimes government agencies do listen to input. After proposed redistricting maps showed Rockaway being split into three congressional districts, the New York State Independent Redistricting Commission seemingly listened to feedback from residents to keep it under one district. On Monday, January 3, the Commission voted on new plans that keep Rockaway under one congressional district—but also loop Rockaway’s senate districts into one. The NYS Independent Redistricting Commission met Monday to vote on a map proposal to send to the State Legislature. According to Commission Chair David Imamura, “Between July and December, the Commission conducted 24 public hearings over 51 hours, both in person and online. We listened to testimony from over 630 speakers, and received over 2,100 written submissions, testimonies, and maps. After the

final public hearing, we deliberated for dozens of hours to synthesize these comments and create new maps accounting for the public’s input.” What resulted was Democrats (A) and Republicans (B) submitting separate plans, and while the hope was for the Commission to vote on one plan, the vote was split evenly among party lines, so both proposals will be sent to the State Legislature. However, for Rockaway, the plans are almost identical. Both Plan A and Plan B show Rockaway’s congressional district, District 5, continuing to oversee the entire peninsula, as is currently (see photos). However, both plans show changes for Rockaway’s senate districts, currently split between District 15 (Addabbo) and District 10 (Sand-

ers). This could pit Addabbo and Sanders against each other to oversee Rockaway and Howard Beach. Both Plan A and Plan B put the entire peninsula and Howard Beach under District 10 with Plan A putting Ozone Park and Richmond Hill in District 15, while Plan B puts much of Glendale and Maspeth in District 15. For the Assembly maps, the boundaries are almost identical and create a cleaner boundary shape than the current Assembly districts of District 23 and 31. Both maps divide the districts around Beach 108th Street, but Plan A keeps them as District 23

and 31 while Plan B renumbers them as District 24 and 30. The Assembly and Senate will have up to 10 days to approve or reject the maps. A 2/3 vote is necessary in each chamber for approval. If the legislature rejects the plans, the IRC will have up to 15 days to submit a second map (or set of competing maps) to the Legislature for approval under the same 2/3 chamber vote requirement. If the second set of maps is rejected, the legislature can develop and pass maps of their own. All maps can be viewed at: https://nyirc.gov/plans

Rockaway Rallies Around Family After Fire By Katie McFadden

One local family is starting off the new year with nothing but the clothes on their backs. After the McFadden family of 102-00 Shore Front Parkway lost everything in a fire on January 3, the community is coming together to try to turn it around for them. On Monday, January 3 at around 8:46 p.m., FDNY responded to a call of a two-alarm blaze on the eighth floor of the Dayton Towers building. With below freezing temperatures and strong winds, the flames quickly grew around Apartment 8O, creating an alarming scene for neighbors in nearby apartments and buildings. Engine 265, Ladder 121, Battalion 47, Engine 266, Engine 268, Ladder 137 and others arrived at the scene, raising ladders to the eighth floor to battle the blaze. By 9:45 p.m., the incident was under control, but the damage had been done. The apartment where the

fire began was a total loss, with surrounding apartments seeing some smoke and water damage. But miraculously, all tenants survived. According to FDNY, three civilians were transported to Nassau County Hospital, but other reports say they were treated by EMS on scene and refused further treatment. However, unfortunately a dog in the apart-

ment didn’t make it. “We weren’t home. We don’t know how it started,” Meghan McFadden-Murray, one of the occupants of Apartment 8O shared the next day. Unfortunately, their beloved dog, a Shorkie (Shih Tzu-Yorkie mix), died in the fire. And the apartment, along with all of their belongings, is a loss. “We had a big flood that destroyed the apartment in 2019, and we were just coming back from that. Now we lost everything,” she said. Yet, despite losing so much, McFadden-Murray maintained a positive outlook. “It could’ve been worse,” she said. “It’s just stuff. It can be replaced.” As an exhausted Meghan, her mother, Jodi McFadden, and her daughter, Peyton, relaxed in the community room of 10200 Shore Front Parkway after the horrific ordeal of the previous night, new stuff already started to pile up. The morning after the fire, a neighbor, Nina Soszynska, had organized a

ROCKAWAY RALLIES AROUND FAMILY AFTER FIRE Continued from Page 6 make Peyton’s day special despite such a devastating loss. And Rockaway came through. Within an hour, the McFadden family was surrounded by supplies and clothes and Peyton shared smiles as she received new toys from neighbors. And it’s just the start. As we go to press, the GoFundMe for the McFadden family has reached nearly $17,000. There are also several collection drives being done for the family. Soszynska is organizing a collection on Thursday, January 6 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the lobby of 102-00 Shore Front Parkway. They are seeking new toys, new or excellent condition items such as clothing for the little girl (size 6-7, shoe size 11), woman’s clothing (sizes medium and small), household items, furniture and money. Additionally, the Ladies Ancient Orders of Hibernians Di-

***** Eric Ulrich has landed a Senior Advisor position at City Hall under new mayor, Eric Adams. That's gotta be good for Rockaway, right? ***** Wait, can it be? Is this the end of an era? Although he has threatened to do it many times before, we hear Dan Edwards, the Fedex Man, aka Suntan Dan aka Jocko aka Jack Bauer is retiring from FedEx after 27 years serving Rockaway and Breezy Point. The legendary coach and occasional horse player (he made the cover of the RT a few years back when he earned his way into a Las Vegas extravaganza) might be stepping off the truck for the last time. This guy has delivered more than packages. He delivered good

humor and good cheer to customers and delivered from the sidelines as he coached girls soccer while on work breaks. And though mild-mannered he might be, he was also known to chase down kids who egged his truck on Halloween. If he actually does hand in his papers, this Rockaway icon will be missed, at least along the route. Sunny’s retiring but you can bet he’s just getting started. Happy trails, Suntan! And if he keeps working, if this is another false alarm, it’s because he loves his job and the friends he sees along the route. ***** Lose power on Monday? According to PSEG, “an outage occurred on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022 at 5:34 p.m. and affected 449 customers. At 6:43 p.m., an additional 2,719 customers (Newport Ave. to Rockaway Beach Blvd.) were without power for three minutes as crews repaired the issue. All customers were back in service at 6:46 p.m. The cause of the outage was likely wind-related and is being investigated.”

***** It’s not easy to get everybody to agree but it’s nice when it happens. The online reaction to Liz Hanna being named The Rockaway Times Person of the Year was met with full approval. Lots of “well-deserved!” Like The Summer Guide, The Photo Contest, and the Sandcastle Contest, The Rockaway Times has a new tradition. Wonder who will get named at the end of 2022…. ***** Did you hear about the woman on an Icelandair flight who voluntarily isolated in the plane bathroom for five hours after testing positive for Covid mid-flight? Well, for her sake, we hope she had one of the common symptoms of Covid and lost her sense of smell, at least for the duration of the flight. ***** The New York State Independent Redistricting Commission sent redistricting plans to the New York State Legislature. The allegedly bi-partisan commission

couldn’t reach agreement on the lines drawn for congress, the state assembly, and state senate so it sent two maps for each. The maps are actually fairly similar, and you’d think with such small differences they would’ve been able to send just one of each (congress, assembly, senate). In any case, both maps have all of Rockaway in one congressional district. The assembly maps split Rockaway at around Beach 108th; the senate maps make Rockaway one senate district. You can bet there will be significant changes once the NYS Legislature gets in the act. If you want a closer look at the proposed maps, go to www.nyirc.gov/plans ***** A 2-alarm fire broke out at Beach 102-Dayton towers on Monday evening. The 8th floor blaze, reported at about 8:45 p.m. and was under control within an hour. According to the FDNY, three people were transported to Nassau County Hospital, with nonlife threatening injuries.

Positive Influence Dear Editor: I read with great sorrow of the recent passing of Maxwell Mickey Cohen. Mr. Cohen was a notable member of the pantheon of great teachers we were blessed to have at the former Far Rockaway High School back in the ‘60s and ‘70s. His fantastic teaching style was instrumental in creating a true love of science through his biology teaching. He was responsible for many of his students taking advanced careers in science and medicine for which I am deeply indebted. Andrew Gewirtz MD

Positive Feedback Dear Editor: I just had to contribute to your mail bag and say—even though you may have tested positive—you are still in command of the English language and your Boyleing Points are always so entertaining—and ring true in a POSITIVE way. It makes you appreciate the things you have—and we have you and we thank God. Being "isolated" is a trial in itself. It takes away your choices (that we took for granted). Such true words... Thanks for sharing! And wishing you well! Dorothy Fraher To advertise in The Rockaway Times call 718-634-3030 · ads@RockawayTimes.com

Positive Outcome Dear Editor: Everyone should get the triple vaccine against Covid. Like Kevin Boyle, I also got Covid. Like him, I had mild symptoms and rested for two days. Like him, I stayed away from friends and family for several days. Like him I had all three vaccines. Like him, I have no underlying health conditions. Why get the shots? When I reported my case to my doctor, he said if I had not had the shots, I would be dead. Kitty Chen Dean

Positively No Dear Editor: One of my 2022 wishes is for the "no U-turn" signs on Beach 116th Street and on Beach Channel Drive near the post office be removed. Motorists consistently disregard the regulation and police rarely enforce the law. Mike Honan

The rousing show, produced through RTC’s Teen Theatre Workshop, opens on Friday, January 14, with performances on Fridays/Saturdays at 7 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m., through January 23. The last two complete RTC shows to light up their Post Theater at Fort Tilden were “Bye-Bye Birdie Jr.” and “Seussical Jr,” before Covid shutdown all productions in March 2020 Both were produced through their young performers’ workshops. Teen Theatre Workshop co-directors Susan Corning and Adele Wendt, with program director Peggy Page, couldn’t be more thrilled that their youthful actors are raising the curtain on a whole new season of live theatre once again. “It really is hard to put into words,” Corning said. “But the feeling is like coming home after being away for a very long time. These teens are absolutely amazing with their dedication and through hard work, we have found our way through.” “It feels awesome!” Wendt added, who has also taken on choreographer duties. “You can really

tell they missed being here and are so happy to be back.” The storyline of “Legally Blonde” is based on the movie, which later became a Broadway musical. A young woman, Elle Woods, follows her ex-boyfriend to law school with the hopes of winning him back. She ends up, however, finding personal growth and a talent for the law. The cast, 29 performers aged 12-17 enrolled in the program, also serve as the stage crew. “Legally Blonde” rehearsals started in September. “We meet in the morning with our younger class; then our teens during the afternoon, with twohour sessions each,” Corning said. As they get closer to opening, several more weekday rehearsals are added. These young actors/singers/ dancers Wendt said, “are basically professionals at this point. They’re focused and driven. They really don’t come to mess around, even though we have

fun. They put in the work to get the job done.” A big part of that job has been working within the theatre’s strict Covid guidelines. “The greatest challenge of rehearsing during this pandemic is keeping our students, instructors and crews safe. Having to sing and dance with a mask on at all times has been mandatory, but the students never complain because they are so happy to be back on stage performing,” Corn-

ing said. “It just takes…extra work with projection and enunciation,” Wendt said, “but they’re handling it really well.” Their “passion,” Corning said, “is performing and doing live theatre. It is a magical experience not to be missed.” Wendt agreed. “The work (they’ve) put into this show is astronomical, and I’m sure you’ll be able to see that passion and hard work pay off in their performances.” Any words for RTC audiences returning after this long two-year stretch? “Welcome back!” Corning exclaimed. Tickets are currently on sale on the theatre website: rockawaytheatrecompany.org! As for “Legally Blonde: The Musical Jr,” no doubt the verdict will come back as “Highly Entertaining.”

Water Safety Commission Bill Is a Go Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato has announced that her legislation creating the first ever Commission to Prevent Childhood Drownings in New York State was signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul on Friday, December 23. The landmark bill (A.7734) was inspired by a wave of drownings in the Rockaway Peninsula, and was supported by a broad coalition of elected officials, community organizations, and swim safety advocates. The goal of the commission is to create and launch new tactics and methods to reduce childhood drownings in New York State through obtaining data and holding hearings. Senator Tim Kennedy sponsored the bill in the New York State Senate. “We will save lives with this legislation,” Pheffer

Amato said. “We’ve sent a signal that the State of New York cares about preventing unnecessary loss of life, and that water safety is not a privilege, but a necessity. This historic Commission will use their knowledge to come up with new ways of expanding water safety in our state to protect our children. I want to thank the many swim safety advocates who fought so hard for this bill to pass, Senator Tim Kennedy for his steadfast commitment to passing this bill in the State Senate, and Governor Hochul for signing this impactful bill into law.” This legislation will create a nine-person task force with appointees from the Governor's office, and both houses of the legislature. The task force will be responsible for a report six months after their first meeting.

SHAFT Readies For Battle With ALMA By Katie McFadden

The residents of the Surfside buildings are ready to pull out all the punches against ALMA Realty. In response to reports that ALMA is planning to build even more residential buildings on top of the site of three current buildings between Beach 105th and Beach 108th Street, Surfside residents are getting ready for yet another battle in a series of many ongoing ones. No formal plan has yet been laid out, but members of SHAFT, the tenant association for the Surfside Housing buildings overseen by ALMA Realty, are ready to take on yet another fight after hearing ALMA would be presenting a proposal in the near future to build upon the land’s parking lots and pool area. A rendering discovered this summer showing new large residential buildings, retail space and even a hotel, have also been making the rounds. Now SHAFT is trying to get ahead of any possible

plan, knowing all too well that these potential plans are likely more than just rumors. After all, it is something ALMA tried to propose in 2014, but facing heavy pushback with more than 200 people coming out to fight against it at a Community Board meeting, ALMA seemingly put the plan to rest. But now they’re allegedly attempting it again. On Tuesday, January 4, in a virtual meeting, tenants met to discuss the potential plans and issues they have been dealing with for years in the existing buildings. “Our mission for tonight is to primarily get you fired up to stop ALMA from building in our backyard. And the reason you should be fighting is because he’s not even taking care of the three buildings he currently has, which bring us to all of the complaints and 14 health and safety issues that you reported on at our town hall meeting back in 2018,” SHAFT leader Barbara Buffolino said. “We’ve been at this a long, long time.”

That led into a discussion with tenants sharing the issues they’ve been dealing with over the years. In the meeting, a slide was shared listing the 14 concerns brought up in October 2018. Of these issues, only four have been resolved. The rest are ongoing and were mentioned by several tenants on Tuesday. As one tenant put it, “I don’t think that ALMA deserves to put more people at risk by building more buildings, nor continue to have us at risk for safety and health hazards that they have refused to address or are incapable of addressing. The staff onsite do their best, but the owner keeps them understaffed and under-resourced.” She went on to discuss ongoing sanitation issues in the building’s trash rooms, which has led to infestations of rats and roaches on some floors. At some point, the tenants even banded together to create recommendations for how the trash rooms can be better set up, including proper bins and

signage, but as the tenant explained, “We haven’t seen the changes that the ALMA executive rep agreed to months ago. We busted our butts to make it easy for ALMA to do the right thing and look what’s come of it.” The tenant also reminded the group that Efstathios Valiotis, the head of ALMA Realty, has made NYC’s Worst Landlord list on several occasions. “We’re people who work hard and don’t like to complain but this is a habit, and for him to build more here, what is he going to create? We’re going to be the old dumpy buildings with no capital improvement and elevators that don’t work while there are going to be shiny new residences for new people to come Continued on page 15

SHAFT READIES Continued from Page 14 in?” they said. Other tenants proceeded to share other ongoing issues. Some mentioned the lack of maintenance staff to address current problems. “You have like one guy here trying to do one entire building,” one said. Another suggested holding a rent strike to get ALMA’s attention. Others responded it has been tried in the past, but ALMA began threatening tenants with evictions and court orders. Some brought up security issues, including a newer tenant who pointed out that one of the security guards for their building is often caught sleeping. Another tenant said that security guard was also accused of following female tenants to their apartments. “He’s been reported numerous times and he was shuffled to another building and then back at 105 a few weeks later,” they said. Additionally, many tenants pointed out that the doors and gates to the build-

ings are often unsecure and left open, allowing for anyone to enter the properties. Others brought up constant issues with the elevators. One shared that they were recently stuck in an elevator and security was unable to call 911 because they didn’t have phone service. Another resident mentioned how an elevator was recently stopping six inches above the lobby floor, causing people to jump down to exit. Many also mentioned heat issues. “It’s so irregulated. Some days you’re melting and other days my mother lives with the electric heater on. I’ve called the office, called maintenance and even made 311 complaints and the next day, the manager called me asking why I called 311 instead of texting maintenance,” one tenant said. “It’s annoying we have to call constantly to ask them to put on the heat. Why do you think you should build more properties when you can’t even properly heat the place you have?” Some tenants asked if there

was any written proposal regarding the new buildings. Barbara Buffolino said, “Right now there’s no firm proposal. We were gearing up because we were told ALMA would be presenting at the community board meeting on January 11.” ALMA is currently not scheduled to present anything at the upcoming meeting, but SHAFT expects something coming down the pipeline. “We’re working off a rendering that was floating around but let’s not get fooled,” Buffolino said. “I really think part of this may have been to see what we were willing to accept so their proposal could satisfy that. But no proposal should be acceptable.” Another added that the proposal goes beyond rumor. “This is not hypothetical,” they said. “I have seen and read a proposal that had the name of Donovan Richards on it. This is floating around. There’s nothing formal but they got their ducks in a row. ALMA is acting with a Washington, D.C.-based lobbying firm who is going to fundraisers for local officials here. It

feels like they’re building something behind the scenes, and it would be smart for us to be prepared.” Part of that getting ahead is holding meetings such as Tuesday’s. The tenants also spoke of starting petitions, meeting with local civics, sending letters to local elected officials and signing up for public speaking at the upcoming Community Board meeting to let them know about the ongoing issues. SHAFT has also had discussions with new Councilwoman Joann Ariola, who has expressed concern over the issues and pending proposal. They will also do additional community outreach in hopes of gaining support from the community as a whole, as this proposal will have effects beyond Surfside. “We’re here for the beach and they’re making a Manhattan out of us,” one tenant said. No matter what ALMA may propose, SHAFT is ready to take it on. As one tenant said, “We can do this with the support of our neighbors in the larger Rockaway community.”

PEACE My “mantra” during my New Year’s day walking meditation on the beach: “om shanti, om shanti, om shanti, om shanti hum” (‘om’ peace, ‘om’ peace, ‘om’ I am peace). I begin this new year - 2022 - with hope for peace and awakening. Peace on every level: self, between and among people in our community, regions, countries, world. My hope is that peace, joy, love, compassion, gratitude, abundance replace all of the opposites (and I am not going to name them, not going to give

them any power or place in my life or in this column!). The way to peace begins with the self and ripples and flows from there. Finding the softness, kindness in our own hearts and projecting that outwards, causes that ripple effect. The way to do that (and if you read these columns you can probably answer that!) is to take a moment to sit in a comfortable place, breathe deeply and fully, and settle in to yourself. Once there, ask yourself to unwrap the “opposites” (that I refer to above) from your heart.

Recently I was reminded of the absolute kindness abounding after Sandy. During that event, I was enjoying my yoga teacher training in Baja, Mexico. When I returned home shortly after, I experienced people in our community in a different way. There were lending hands everywhere you turned. There were no “opposites,” only compassion and peace. My guess is that if there were to be a similar event, all of the discord present now would simply lift away. People come together. When something very extreme happens, the goodness surfaces. That just tells me it is how we have spun our lives that covers up that core goodness and all of the offerings - love, kindness, generosity - that spring forth from that. I watched Shane’s (Enchantress Shane) video on New Year’s Eve, and someone wrote in the comments: “Happy New Ear” as in listening to things with a new ear. (Thank you, Shane, for sharing that.) So, one on one, maybe listening with an

The Rockaway Times open heart, not ready to push back, waiting to respond, holding off on the reaction until the moment passes. It might lose steam. It might lose some of its power. We have to ask ourselves how important are the things that divide. How important are the things that exclude harmony and peace? In the whole scheme of things, that is, our lifespan, I venture to commit that they are not important at all. I ask myself what is important, and I come up with my six heart friends: peace, joy, love, compassion, gratitude, abundance. “Let's trade in all our judging for appreciating. Let’s lay down our righteousness and just be together. If you would truly bring peace to the world, identify with that place within you where you are Peace.” Ram Dass May you be happy. May you be free. May you be compassionate. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

FROM RISE: Be Heard for Community Visioning

By Daniel J. Borrero, RISE Program Manager

RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity) is hosting the second design forum for its project Community Visioning in Edgemere on Saturday, January 15, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The forum was originally scheduled to be held in person, but because of the increase in COVID-19 cases related to the Omicron variant, it will now be held via Zoom. RISE and the Collective for Community, Culture, and Environment (CCCE) cordially invite all Edgemere residents and neighbors from across the Rockaway peninsula to take

part in this important and engaging meeting. Come have a say in the development of our community; we want your voices to be heard! At Forum 1 back on November 13, 2021, participants came up with a long list of potential open-space solutions, including exercise parks, drive-in theaters, outdoor cafes, places to barbeque, solar farms, playgrounds, ice skating, and art spaces. The second forum will focus on identifying what we see as the most important onthe-ground solutions for Edgemere and determining on what vacant lots those uses should be placed. CCCE Adaptive Design Specialist Zehra Kuz will give a presentation that explores these ideas further and on looking at how other communities from across the country and the world have used their vacant lots to bring culture and economic drivers to their neighborhoods. Several activities will help participants identify the solutions that

speak to them the most. Log on to Zoom on January 15 to meet other like-minded folks, learn more about the project, and take part in designing the changes coming to Edgemere. This project cannot be a success without the people who live in the area. We hope to see you there, even if it is on the computer screen. RISE and CCCE invite all Rockaway students to join be-

cause the voices of the youth are just as important as the voices of the adults. Plus, you can receive community service for your participation. Just be sure to talk to a RISE representative before you exit the Zoom meeting. To register for Forum 2, go to the RISE website. For questions and/or comments, e-mail dborrero@riserockaway.org.

Beach 119 Plunges Into the New Year With the air temperature nearing 52 degrees and the water a nice 48, Saturday’s New Year’s Day Plunge was a breeze! This year on Beach 119th, one of the more popular plunge spots, a little rain couldn’t keep the locals away from getting even

wetter. In true Beach 119th fashion, the plungers were led in a march down the block to the beat of their own drum. More than 60 people ran into the ocean for the annual dip. Here are a few highlights provided by Kay Sullivan.

Chicken Stew By Sharon Feldman

Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 large sweet onion, quartered 6 cloves garlic, peeled 2 large carrots, peeled and cut into -2 inch chunks 1 pound chicken thighs, skin removed (I used 4) Handful thyme sprigs (or 1-1/2 tablespoons dry thyme) Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 pound red bliss potatoes, washed and quartered (or use multi colored) 1 large sweet potato, peeled and quartered 2 handfuls green

Directions: Remove skin from chicken thighs. Put in pot and sprinkle with salt. Put the thyme sprigs over the chicken. Cut the carrots and potatoes and add to them to the pot. Add about 2” cool water to cover everything (or chicken stock). Sprinkle with ground pepper. Cook on medium high. Skim the fat off the top and continue to cook for approximately 1-1/2 hours. Check to see if the chicken is soft and pliable. Remove chicken to a plate. Continue to cook the stew on medium. Once chicken is cool enough to handle, shred it and then return it back to the pot. Add the string beans the last ½ hour of cooking. I like them with a crunch, so it’s up to you how much longer to cook it. For a little kick, use some hot sauce.

Grannie Annie ANNIE LAURIE HURLEY HESLIN JUNE 30, 1927 - DECEMBER 30, 2021 My grandma had the best hats. Her favorite was red with a black satin ribbon. She used to say that was the hat she wanted to be buried in. Annie talked about her funeral like it was a party to plan. She had it all figured out. In her imagination, “Sweet Mystery of Life” would be playing while everyone talked about what a great singer she was, how she made the best Irish soda bread, and we would all admire her red hat. Annie was born in a New York City taxi cab. Her favorite dessert was Entenmann’s raspberry danish cake. She drove like a maniac (I learned from the best). She never moped and she never cried. She sang the best cover of Elvis’ “Blue Christmas.” She loved Bob Dylan and anything from “The Sound of Music.” She loved to play dress-up. She always spoke her mind and fought for the underdog. Annie was the life of the

opened up Breezy Point’s very first library in the left wing of St. Edmund’s church. Here, Annie and other well-read Breezy Pointers organized and sorted through thousands of donated books and made them available to anyone wanted them. She brought her love of poetry and literature to the neighborhood, hosting monthly poetry hours and book discussions. On Sunday mornings after Mass, friends and neighbors gathered to read poems they had written and tell their stories. I would be remiss if I did not mention Annie’s role center stage at the annual Breezy Point Parish Show where she performed Irish rebel songs and American standards alongside her late husband and fellow song-bird, Johnny. Annie was a force to be reckoned with. When Hurricane Sandy hit, she lost her house to the fire that spread throughout the peninsula. My mom and my

grandma saved each other that night. At a certain point, when the fire came close enough, they knew it was time to go. There was no time to take that last sip of tea, or pack up her treasures, and there definitely wasn’t time to grab all those hats that hung on Nannie’s wall. Not even the red one. Annie overcame more in a lifetime than anyone should have to, and she did it with grace. She was our Irish Princess. She was our sunshine. We love you, Grannie Annie. You taught us how to celebrate this precious life. You taught us how to color outside the lines. Rest in Peace and in Power, you firecracker. PS: We will celebrate Annie's life in the style she would expect with a funeral Mass and party to follow in the springtime. The dress code is tie-dye. - Laura Cryan

I have seen people secretly take themselves out of the game and believe that the good things in life are not available for them. Part of this is having a victim mentality, and part of it is lack of deservability. What do you think about deserving? What did you hear growing up about deserving? She started off as a summer dweller and moved to the Irish Riviera full time several years later. Annie brought all of her Brooklyn sass with her to the serene hamlet of Breezy Point. She got involved with the church right away and it wasn’t unusual to see Father Byrne or Father Frances sitting on her couch enjoying a cup of tea. Annie was a book worm. She

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Traditionally, doctors have kept medical records on patients as a means of tracking the patient’s health over time and as a memory aide for the doctor. The notes were handwritten and often illegible, sometimes even illegible to the person that wrote them. With technological improvements in this digital world, except for a few small offices, medical records are now kept in electronic form. Preparing and keeping electronic medical records demands much more time from the clinician as opposed to what handwritten notes used to require, however electronic records tend to be much more complex and comprehensive. Still, electronic medical records contain abbreviations, symbols, and other jargon that lay people would not be familiar with. One of the

Page 39

THURSDAY, JANUARY 6, 2022

MEDICAL RECORDS main advantages of electronic records is that they can be shared with other practitioners and specialists caring for the patient, thereby facilitating the flow of information among the clinicians caring for the patient. Medical records were never designed to be shared with patients, however, considering that legally the records are the property of the patient, not the doctor, many offices and health systems have created patient portals. These portals allow the patient to directly read and review their own medical records. In 2021, new legislation was introduced in the U.S. that required almost all notes to be shared with patients. The notes required to be shared include history and physicals, progress notes, consultations, procedure notes, discharge summaries, imaging narratives, laboratory reports, and pathology reports. The goal of record sharing is to increase transparency between

clinicians and patients. Some studies have shown that record sharing allows patients to feel more engaged in their health care, better understand their medical conditions and care plans, and improve the ability of patients to take their medications properly. Of course, information available to the patient via a portal is optional, not required, reading. Remember that the main purpose of medical notes is to facilitate communication among health care providers, not between doctors and patients. If you plan to read your notes, let the doctor know so that more patient-directed information can be placed in the notes (i.e., follow-up instruction). Remember to read the records as a patient, not as a clinician. If you identify anything that concerns you, discuss it with someone on your health care team. If you plan to read your notes, here are a few suggestions: review the care plan for

any new medications or orders by the doctor. Use this to make a “to-do” list for yourself prior to your next visit; wait for your doctor to contact you regarding any lab results, imaging studies, or other reports. These may be placed in the file electronically before the doctor has reviewed them; review your medication list for accuracy; let your healthcare team know about any major errors or missing information (like allergies); share your notes with people close to you who are involved in your medical care. Here are a few don’ts: don’t get caught up in medical jargon or terminology; don’t take any language personally; do not attempt to interpret anything without first talking to your doctor. She married John DiResta, a NYC Transit cop on 1/14/89 in Hawaii, high on the side of Diamond Head Mountain. John and Frances went on to have three lovely children, Matthew, Sabrina and Shannon. In 1998 the family moved to Hollywood, California. They were commonly known as “The Rockaway Hillbillies.” Over the next 23 years, Frances had the chance to hang out with the likes of Robert DeNiro, Sandra Bullock and Jay Leno. On that note, the Irish actor, Ed Burns, always really loved hanging out with Frances because of her Rockaway roots. She was a loving wife, a great mom, and a fantastic cook! And she was funny! She will be sorely missed by the whole world. Mass will be held at St Killian Parish in Farmingdale, NY, on Jan 24th at 9:45am. All friends and family are welcome. God Bless

SPOTTED:

Rocking In The New Year John Sattler goes for the Coney Island New Year’s Day plunge but he makes sure he’s the best dressed polar bear and reminds everyone there that there’s way better beach than Coney’s. Dan Guarino (with Sophia Skeans) made a splash before he even jumped in the ocean. He made everyone green with envy as he rocked the Rockaway Times tee on New Year’s Day. And Valerie Christopher had warmer ideas as she rocked a vintage tee in Vieques, Puerto Rico. Nice!

Team Moves Up, Takes Title

St. Francis de Sales hoopers brought their talents to Rockville Centre and rocked. This talented 6th grade team entered and won the 7th grade B Division championship at the recent St. Agnes Christmas tourney. Coaches Joe Courtney and JoJo O’Grady were understandably thrilled with the squad’s championship run. O’Grady said he was overjoyed with the victory and looks forward to the return of CYO basketball and another successful season.

Wrestle Talk WRESTLING NEWS wrestling fans outside of North America in 2019, FiteTV has announced a price increase starting on January 8, 2022. from $4.99 to $6.99 per month. Which in my opinion is still a great price to watch AEW Wrestling. The first question of the year comes from Judy M. in Rockaway Beach and she asked, "What happened to Ember Moon from the WWE?" Judy, Ember Moon was released last year in November and apparently, she is scheduled to make an appearance next month at an event in Baltimore, Maryland called "Baltimore Celebfest 3." If you want more information on this event please reach out to us here at WrestleTalk.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Let's dive into the news! As the world continues to deal with the Covid pandemic, it appears that WWE Superstar Roman Reigns has tested positive for Covid, which probably led to Brock Lesnar winning the WWE Championship. Right now, there is no scheduled comeback for Roman Reigns but reports coming from the WWE are that WWE Creative will continue the Roman Reigns/Brock Lesnar storyline. WWE Superstar Sasha may have suffered an injury during a match with Charlotte Flair at a recent event held in Fayetteville, North Carolina. According, to PWInsider "Banks suffered an apparent leg or knee injury during the match as she landed awkwardly following a backbreaker spot." We will

keep you updated on her injury. We have an update on former WWE Superstar Nia Jax who was released from the company months ago and apparently she has no plans to return back to wrestling as she has announced that she would be starting a business. What type of business it would be, she did

not state but she has also stated she plans to remain on her farmhouse and take time to deal with mental stress issues. Whether Nia chooses to return or retire from wrestling, we wish her the best on her future If you have any questions, endeavors. Fans who have subscribed please send them in to eavto AEW Plus, a service that il183@yahoo.com and have a brought AEW programming to great week!
