How to Discard Your Christmas Tree Still need to get rid of your Christmas tree? The Department of Sanitation and the Parks Department are here to help. DSNY is holding curbside pickups of discarded Christmas tree until Friday, January 15. Be sure to remove all tree stands, tinsel, lights and ornaments from trees before they are put out for collection. Clean, non-bagged Christmas trees that left on the curb between now and January 15 will be chipped, mixed with leaves, and recycled into rich compost for the city’s parks, institutions, and community gardens. The Department of Sanitation collected more than 213,000 Christmas trees for “tree-cycling” after Christmas 2014. “Recycling gives Christmas trees new life,” Commissioner Kathryn Gar-

cia said. “The tree in our homes now will be chipped and reused as mulch in parks and community gardens throughout the city and enjoyed for the months to come.” The Parks Department is also holding a collection and special event called MulchFest. MulchFest will be held Saturday and Sunday, January 9 and 10, 2016 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 30 chipping sites. NYC Parks’ 48 drop-off sites will be accepting trees through January 10. All of the Rockaway locations are drop-off sites only. You can drop off your trees at the old Neponsit Nursing Home parking lot near Beach 149th Street, Beach 94th Street and Shore Front Parkway or the parking lot at Beach 11th Street. All lights, ornaments, decorations and netting

Law Enforcement Appreciation Day is Saturday

must be removed from trees prior to drop-off. The trees will be chipped and turned into mulch at the events. Those who attend a MulchFest event can have their tree chipped and can take home their own bag of mulch. The nearest chipping locations will be at Marine Park (East 33rd and Avenue U), Forest Park (Forest Park Drive and Woodhaven Boulevard) and Brookville Park (Brookville Boulevard / Caney Road / 144th Avenue). Bring your tree to one of these locations between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on January 9 or 10, to have your tree chipped and receive mulch. For more information on Christmas tree collection and recycling or MulchFest, visit nyc.gov/dsny, nyc.gov/parks or call 311.

The widow of an NYPD officer killed in the line of duty and her organization are holding a Law Enforcement Appreciation DAY (LEAD) on Saturday, January 9. Leslyn Stewart, whose husband Dillon Stewart was shot while attempting to pull over a car in November 2005, is president of the New York City chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS), a nonprofit supporting the families of fallen police officers. COPS is asking for the public to show their support for all law enforcement personnel in a variety of ways, including flying blue ribbons on cars and mailboxes, wearing blue clothing, shining blue light bulbs, making thank you cards for local precincts, and simply thanking a police officer if you see them. LEAD T-shirts and pins are available on the organization’s website copsshop.com. The NYPD’s Community Affairs Bureau is promoting the day of appreciation by sending out flyers and sharing information on social media.

ROAD BLOCK Stretch Of BCD Closed Until ??? By Dylan Watton

Rockaway motorists got a New Year’s surprise on Thursday, December 31 as a significant stretch of Beach Channel Drive was closed to all traffic due to imminently perilous road conditions. Bright orange barrels sectioned off the east-west thoroughfare from Beach 108th Street to the western terminus of the Rockaway Freeway, next to the Mobil station. A Department of Transportation (DOT) press release showed a diagram of the closure and said that the agency has “cre-

The company is aware of the road closure and is coordinating closely with NYC DOT as they evaluate the condition of the roadway. More information for that site can be found at http:// rockawayparkmgpsite.com/. “DEC’s role at this site is oversight of the remedial work, a DEC spokesperson said. “This installation [of the barrier] was initiated after the city installed

Local politicians called on the City and State to conduct thorough investigations into why Beach Channel Drive deteriorated and how to improve the bulkhead on the bay to prevent future storm-related damage. “The closure of Beach Channel Drive at Beach 108th Street to inspect possible structural issues underscores the need for comprehensive repairs to our infrastructure here in Rockaway,â€? Additionally the concrete median is split and raised in some areas. The deterioration of the road comes after years of erosion to the bulkhead on Jamaica Bay, which was severely exacerbated post-Hurricane Sandy. The road also abuts the site of a National Grid Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) site which is being overseen by New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation. “National Grid is completing the last phase of remediation at the Rockaway Park former MGP site, a spokesperson

BUDS TO BLOSSOMS MOMMY AND ME

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month. With more than 1,000 children falling victim to human trafficking each year in New York, it is a important issue that often goes overlooked. According to a 2014 DNAInfo report, Queens, especially Roosevelt Avenue in Jackson Heights, is “a mecca of human trafficking.” Learn more about this important issue by attending a screening of Not My Life, followed by a discussion at 12 p.m. on Saturday, January 16. Filmed on five continents, in a dozen countries, Not My Life reveals a world where millions of children are exploited through practices including forced labor, domestic servitude, begging, sex tourism, sexual violence, and child soldiering. The screening is free and meant to spread awareness. It will take place at Farm Rockaway (444 Beach 58th Street). Everyone is welcome, but teenagers are encouraged. For more information, or if you’re a teacher that wants to bring a group, call 347-246-6358 or email xtrememeasureactivist@gmail.com.

Patronizing This newspaper thing is brutal. Brutal as in trying to maintain a weight somewhat under a boardwalk lifeguard shack. It’s not all about sitting at a keyboard and banging out some words hoping they make sense to my fans at the Sea Breeze- Golden Age club. No, no, no, having a newspaper means you’ve got to get out there. You’ve got to meet the people (except for those you’ve got to avoid like the plague or White Castle), you’ve got to breathe the air (except in the vicinity of the sewage treatment plant), and you’ve got to shop local. The least I can do is try to support my advertisers. I need a bike, I’m going to Paul’s. I need tile, I’m going to Classic Tile. We’ve got a couple of cars so one goes to Bulloch’s and one to Channel Drive Shell. Oh, those cars are leased from advertisers. After that, it gets tricky. I can’t patronize every advertiser as much as I’d like to. I feel guilty when I don’t though. Catholic high schools advertise so I go to their Open Houses dressed as an eighth grader. It’s a good thing none of the 4,000 Rockaway nail salons advertise – I wouldn’t know what to do. Though I guess I’d just do what I do now -- bite my nails. And it’s a good thing funeral parlors haven’t advertised yet. How would I support them? Hey, don’t be a wise guy. It’s a different kind of challenge for food and drink. In dedication to my craft I’ve made sure to patronize every bar and restaurant that’s advertised in the paper. This is Rockaway so that ain’t easy. And with places opening

or re-opening it’s only gonna get tougher. And by the way, you might catch me out drinking a beer or eating a delicious meal but don’t be fooled, I’m doing field work. It’s Journalism 101. I’ve got to research and build a file. I’m not out having fun. I’m developing sources. Some might say that’s getting sauced for sources (Sauced for Sources -- hmmm, sounds like a non-profit). When I’m feeling antisocial (and that’s about five nights a week) I don’t abandon my advertisers, I order in. And this allows me to make a confession: I used to eat frozen pizza. I can now say I haven’t had any godforsaken frozen pizza since I started publishing. Elegante and Boardwalk pizza delivery guys can get to my house blindfolded by now. And Rocco’s in Broad Channel? I’m tellin ya’ – try the Grandma pie. And I’ve got to patronize all these places in just eleven months. Because January is off the table. I’m not buying anything I read in Diary of a Fat Man, who says diet is a dirty word and getting healthy means a lifestyle change. Phooey – I’m not changing anything. I’ve got to get this over with in a hurry and January’s a good month to starve and make a couple of half-hearted attempts at getting healthy. Hmmm… now I’ve gotta pick a gym. Gliders, CROM, the Y. Good choices. Maybe 2016’s the year I try yoga. Gotta stick to my advertisers. But first, I’ve gotta go get a healthy smoothie from Local Liquids and think about it. And if I’m gonna cheat in January, I’ll head over to Coastal Frozen Yogurt.

Weekend of Fundraisers By Katie McFadden

Two important fundraisers for locals in need are being held this weekend. On Friday, January 8, the Fight Like a Girl Raffle Night will take place to raise money for Mrs. Elaine. Elaine Freeburg, owner of Mrs. Elaine’s School of Dance in Rockaway Park, was diagnosed with Stage IV invasive breast cancer in the fall. Freeburg and her husband John have two little girls. Ella, 3 and Jessie, who was just born in July. Members of the community and the dance school have been doing what they can to help Mrs. Elaine and her family during this difficult time. Friday’s fundraiser dinner and raffle party at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus is already sold out, but there are still ways to help. Tickets for the grand prize raffle can still be purchased. The grand prize is a vacation to any destination, valued at $1,500. Tickets are $10 each or buy two, get one free. They can be purchased at Mrs.

Elaine

Elaine’s School of Dance (112-20 Beach Channel Drive) or email elainesFUNdraiser@gmail.com for more info. The winners will be announced at Friday’s fundraiser, but winners do not need to be present. Donations can also be made to help cover Mrs. Elaine’s medical expenses at www.YouCaring. com. People can also register to make a meal for Freeburg and her family at FoodTidings.com.

Search “Elaine Freeburg” for the fundraiser and meal schedule on these sites. For future fundraiser information, follow Mrs. Elaine’s School of Dance on Facebook. On Saturday, January 9, all are welcome to attend a fundraiser for Minerva Horan in Broad Channel. Thirty-year-old Minerva, or Minnie, was diagnosed with a rare form of fibromatosis. This leaves her highly likely to develop tumors throughout her body. On top of this she has recently been diagnosed with Stage III sarcoma of the peripheral nerve. She has undergone at least two surgeries to remove tumors, one of which required a double blood transfusion during recovery to save her life. Following a second surgery, she developed two blood clots and is on blood thinners. Her friends and family are hoping to provide her with services at a good hospital that will increase her chances of a long, happy life, but her insurance doesn’t cover all of the expenses.

Delivery Now Available Including Breezy

Minnie

On Saturday, from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. at the VFW Post 260 (713 Shad Creek Road, Broad Channel), there will be a fundraiser for Minnie featuring some great bands. The Solshyne Trio will perform at 8 p.m., followed by Indaculture at 9 p.m., Walker and the Brotherhood of the Grape at 10 p.m. and The Poor House at 11 p.m. For fun, guests are encouraged to dress in their favorite hippie gear, but it is optional. The event is $10 at the door. You can bring your own food or snacks and there is a cash bar at the VFW. There will also be raffles. If you can’t attend the event, but want to help Minnie, donations can be made at www.gofundme.com/ minnieweloveyou.

***** Arverne By The Sea will be expanding. A seven-story, 126 unit building will be going up at Beach 69th and Rockaway Beach Boulevard, right across from the stores. Plans also include a restaurant and other retail spaces. ***** The Broad Channel VFW will host a “Friend in Need benefit for Minnie Horan on January 9 from 8 p.m.-midnight. ***** You cannot park a commercial vehicle on a public street overnight or on residential property. It is illegal to park an unlicensed or unregistered car or boat on your property. It is illegal to put your garbage out before 5 p.m. the night before pick up. When it snows, you must shovel your sidewalk within four hours after the snow has

THURSDAY, JANUARY 7, 2016 stopped falling or by 11 a.m. if the snow stopped after 9 p.m. Those are tidbits we found on the Community Board 14 site. ***** Maybe, just maybe it’s a coincidence, but in our We Get Email section Mr. John Crozier wrote: “I would like to let people know that Beach Channel Drive across from the National Grid site going westbound around Beach 109th street, the road is buckling and it is like driving over a bag of asphalt potato chips. I hope by putting this in the paper the Department of Transportation is put on notice and gets around to fixing this sooner rather than later. Sooner it was! We went to press Wednesday night and a crew was there Thursday. The road is closed “until further notice. ***** In last week’s issue we published a wedding photo from an album that had been placed on our doorstep. Someone had found it after Sandy, forgot about it, then came across it again and figured The Rockaway Times would be a good

Page 7

place to start to find the rightful owners. We also posted the photo on Facebook and Alexa Marchese, daughter of Lawrence and Mindy, recognized her parents. Larry called us and said he’s be coming by to get the photo album. ***** E-ZPass is wonderful except it’s easy to assume they are billing you correctly. Well, Rockaway residents, check your E-ZPass statements. We’ve gotten reports about people not getting rebates for Cross Bay Bridge crossings recently. ***** We’re not sure if “cheesing is a term born in Rockaway but when you smile hard and are over the top with joy, you are definitely cheesing. We know Phil Goldfeder was cheesing when he was named on some list that appeared in The New York Post as one of the Top Dressed Politicians. ***** Love your block? Have something of interest you’d like to share about where you live? Contact Dylan Watton at Dy-

lan@RockawayTimes.com and maybe your block will get a profile in The Rockaway Times. ***** It’s 2016. Calling Chuck Schumer, calling Army Corps of Engineers: Where are the jetties? And while we’re asking, what’s happening with the extra $200 million for the boardwalk? If Parks is looking for an idea, they could widen at the concessions to where there’s less of a bottleneck on crowded summer days. ***** If you’re not reading this while on a treadmill perhaps you better have a look on pages 9-13 for some great local options for a healthy new year. ***** Got the acting bug? The Rockaway Theatre Company is holding auditions for its production of the Sunshine Boys Son January 31 from 6-8 p.m. and Monday, February 1 from 7-9 p.m. Check out rockawaytheatrecompany.org for more info. Hot Yoga: Magical and Moving January 8, 2010 seems like just a few weeks ago, so I can’t believe tomorrow is the 6th Anniversary of Hot Yoga Rockaway Beach! A gigantic THANK YOU to our dedicated students who have embraced the practice and give it their all, and to the fabulous teachers I’m so lucky to have. The Studio is a melting pot of students ranging in ages from 12-80+ years, with varying degrees of fitness, flexibility and injury so I am reminded every single day why I love teaching hot yoga so much. It brings the teachers and me tremendous joy and satisfaction when we see how the students progress with each class compared to their first day in the hot room. They arrive as a beginner (some never took a yoga class, let alone a hot one)

Come

detox that comes along with sweating profusely gives you a glow from head to toe! From our yogis mouths... Hot Yoga is great because it’s physically and mentally challenging, yet so accepting of where you are at any given moment. There is always something to learn and some way to grow. It gives you that time to focus on nothing else but what is going on for you, on your mat, in that moment. And you just feel so amazing after! - Victoria I like Hot Yoga because every time I walk into the studio I’m greeted by a new challenge and experience where I’m constantly discovering new things about my body. It’s an awesome workout and after each class I feel invigorated, energized, relaxed, healthy, balanced and aligned mentally and physically. And if that’s not enough, I get to hang out with and learn from really

great people! - Denise I love Hot Yoga because for those 60 or 75 minutes, you are in control; in control of your body, your mind, your life. It’s the part of your day that belongs only to you!! How often do you get that? Really? - Therese I love Hot Yoga because it allows me to take a couple of hours to “get out of my head” so to speak, while still challenging myself physically. Henry Hot Yoga is great because I feel better every time I come. - Jennifer So please come experience the greatest feeling of euphoric exhaustion for yourself. No expectations. No judgments. No fear. You’ll see the profound changes in your body and mind after only a few classes. Call 718945-YOGA (9642) or visit the website: HotYogaRockawayBeach.com. Namaste.

All Seasons Has It All All Seasons Retreat is a mindbody fitness studio with Yoga, Pilates, Meditation, Zumba and Kickboxing. We also have Mommy and Me Yoga, and Yoga for kids and teens. In addition we host dance events like Country Line Dancing, Salsa and Hustle/Disco lessons. We want fitness to be something everyone can engage in and we also want people to find their path to fitness as a fun lifestyle, not another item on their ToDo List. Our Yoga and Pilates classes have a therapeutic focus, stressing alignment and form. Pilates was designed as physical therapy, and can help treat and prevent back pain, improve posture and strengthen the core. These exercises heal the body and help you move your joints with ease. Some of our Pilates classes work with a foam roller, to help stretch and rehydrate the body’s connec-

tive tissue, which enhances the therapeutic effects. Both Yoga and Pilates work to develop posture, good breathing and a sense of ease in movement. Both are great for all ages and fitness levels. Every month, we also have a special Restorative Yoga class, with essential oils and hands on healing, where you can experience deep rest and relaxation. For a more intense workout we offer Zumba five times a week including Zumba Burst, a high intensity interval workout. We also have Kickboxing, which is an interval cardio/ strength class that also happens to be a lot of fun! For all the latest news and events please go to www.retreatandspa.com/news Our hope at All Seasons Retreat is to create a community where our service brings health, fitness and happiness to students and teachers!

Women of Rockaway: Mary Edwards of Rockaway Gliders By Katie McFadden

Who runs the peninsula? Women. A large number of local businesses and organizations are owned and operated by females, or female co-owners. And they deserve recognition. As part of an ongoing series, the Rockaway Times is profiling local female entrepreneurs each week. This week is Mary Edwards, owner of Rockaway Gliders At 26 years old, lifelong Rockaway resident Mary Edwards opened her own fitness studio, Rockaway Gliders in May 2013. The gym at 114-04 Beach Channel Drive offers members a series of unique group classes such as spinning, TRX, kettle bells, Pilates, boot camp and nutritional advice. Having experienced the intimidating atmosphere of corporate gyms, Edwards wanted to bring a fitness studio to her hometown where people could feel comfortable working out. Prior to opening Rockaway Gliders, Edwards worked at a corporate gym for four years in Washington, D.C., where she had graduated from college. She then moved back to New York and worked for another big gym in Manhattan, but it wasn’t for her. “My goal with Gliders has always been to provide a sense of community instead of a sense of intimidation. When I worked for the corporate gyms, I felt for the people who would come in and felt uncomfortable working out. I didn’t want that in my own studio. A feeling of community and belonging is lacking in big gyms and it can be intimidating to the average person. Fitness shouldn’t be about judgment. I support fitness for everyone who feels capable of doing the workouts that we provide,” Edwards said. Edwards wasn’t on a fitness career path until she realized how important it was to her own well-being. “I was on a law school route in college, but

Mary Edwards of Gliders

I went to college to run track and I quit sophomore year because I didn’t have the drive anymore. I didn’t realize at the time but I was going through a sophomore slump and I wasn’t as happy and energized because I wasn’t exercising or living a healthy lifestyle anymore,” Edwards said. “In junior year, I got back into it. Just integrating a few workouts into my week and not eating cheeseburgers and French fries at every meal made a huge difference. I was less stressed and happier and I realized that I no longer wanted to pursue law school. I realized how much better my life was by being healthy and I thought it would be great to teach other people the benefits. I had already taken the LSATs, but I started to look into a career in the fitness industry instead and I’m very happy I didn’t go the lawyer route. That conversation didn’t go well with my parents, but eventually they got on board and became my biggest supporters.” After graduating college, Edwards worked for her father, John Edwards, while studying to become a personal trainer. After obtaining certification, she moved back to Washington, D.C. and worked in a corporate gym for a few years until moving back to New York. When she realized she wanted to open her own studio, her father, who has many years of business experience, backed her with advice and financial

support. “My dad has been a huge help. We argue a lot about the execution of the studio but he’s been great and supportive and he helps me financially when I’m in a bind. He has a much better business sense than I do. I think mine has improved over the past three years, but I was really naïve when I started. I didn’t want to charge people because you know everyone in Rockaway and I wanted to pay my trainers well and at the end of the day, you have to learn to be more shrewd. You have to pay rent and stay open and there has to be a balance between making enough money while trying to give back,” Edwards said. Edwards found being a young business owner to be a challenge at the start. “In the beginning, I felt that people would see how young I was and they would try to get one over on me. That was tough but I think that’s gone away and I’ve proven my worth,” she said. Being a female has also presented some challenges. “I’ve found it hard to tap into the male following. I think it may be because men don’t like group instruction and maybe it’s because I’m a female. I could be wrong, but we don’t get a lot of men in class,” Edwards said. Keeping consistent business has been an ongoing challenge. “We have a loyal following, but the fitness world has its highs and lows. We’ll get a lot of business in January for

resolution time, but then people start to fall off. You have to figure out how to make it work,” she said. Working in a fitness atmosphere can be beneficial when it comes to facing those challenges. “Even though there are stressors involved in this business, stress relief is built into my job because I’m always exercising,” Edwards said. Providing people with a place to relieve their own stresses has also been rewarding for Edwards. “It feels good to see people transform their bodies and their lives for the better. People’s demeanors change with every class. They walk in and you can see them wearing the stress of the day and after, they walk out smiling and laughing. Just one hour of exercise can change someone’s day and knowing that what we’re doing here is impacting people’s lives in a positive way makes my work meaningful,” she said. To help support her business, Edwards comes up with innovative ways to keep it growing. She recently launched a website called FoodandFitnessByMary. com. Through the professional website, Edwards brings workouts into the home. “I sell workouts that you can do at home without equipment and meal plans with clean recipes using all natural foods. This is meant for the person like the stay-athome mom or the guy that commutes to Manhattan every day and doesn’t have time to get to the gym. You can do the workouts in the privacy of your own home,” she said about the website which launched in December. “This will serve as another way to generate income for the business and it’s a way to expand the health/ fitness and food community to people that can’t come to the studio,” she said. Rockaway Gliders offers classes seven days a week. January Boardwalk Update We’ve finally reached 2016, the year when the Parks Department promises that we’ll have a full, continuous boardwalk by Memorial Day. Parks recently released its monthly update on boardwalk progress and what will take place in the month of January. Phase 1 and 2, from Beach 86th to Beach 107th Street is complete and open. The remaining plantings and the land and beachside of the boardwalk are also complete. You may occasionally see small work crews in these areas while the contractor completes “punch-list” items. A lot of action will be taking place in Phase 3, 4, and 5 this month. In Phase 3, from Beach 108th to Beach 126th Street, pipe and h-pile driving will be completed this month, with the exception of construction access locations which will be completed at a later date. You may see extended work hours Monday through Friday (until 5:30pm) as well as Satur-

day work for remaining pile driving activities and pre-cast cap installation. Installation of sand retaining wall panels and boardwalk pile caps will continue as well as utility installation and sand fill under the boardwalk. Boardwalk plank erection at the east end of Phase 3 (near B106th island) and installation of access structures pile caps and planks will commence in January. In Phase 4A, from Beach 73rd

to Beach 86th Street, pipe and H pile driving, installation of the sand retaining walls, precast pile caps, sand fill under the boardwalk, electrical and plumbing utilities for new boardwalk and beach access structures, pre-cast plank installation and grouting, and placing concrete access structures are substantially complete. Boardwalk railing installation as well as RPL decking and furniture installation will continue in January. Beach grass planting and sand fence installation will continue. In Phase 4B from Beach 60th to Beach 73rd Street, installation of the pre-cast pile caps, sand fill under the boardwalk, electrical and plumbing utilities, and pre-cast plank installation for the new boardwalk is substantially complete. Boardwalk railing, pre-cast plank joint grouting, as well as beach access structure construction, will continue this month. In Phase 5A, from Beach 39th to Beach 60th Street, remov-

al of the existing boardwalk, chain link fence installation, clearing and grubbing, and Hpile and pipe pile driving are substantially complete. Sand retaining wall panel and pile cap installation, as well as utility installation and sand fill under the boardwalk, will continue in January. Pre-cast plank installation will continue in January. Boardwalk railing installation and access structure pile cap and plank installation will also commence in January. Beach access will continue to be limited during construction. In Phase 3, access will only be available at Beach 108th and Beach 116th Streets until spring 2016. In Phase 4, access is only open at Beach 73rd and Beach 86th Street until spring. In Phase 5A, there is no beach access until spring 2016. Work Hours are between 7AM—4PM, Monday—Friday. Extended work hours are between 4PM and 6PM. The Lazer Speaks: The Studio By Lou Pastina

The band I play for uses the winter to rehearse and build new set lists for the upcoming year. We are excited to be playing Thai Rock and Community House in January and February. But to prepare, we need a place to play for several hours, to work out the kinks, experiment with new songs and practice the old ones. Occasionally we use one of our houses, but mermaids can only take the sound of mermen so long. So we have to play at a studio. Studios are great because they have soundproof rooms, some great equipment, knowledgeable staff that know how to set up sound equipment and in general when you split the cost across seven people it’s very economical. The problem is that there are no studios in Rockaway. I know it’s hard to believe because there

are so many talented musicians and bands on the peninsula. At one time the Grayriders used an artist’s studio on Rockaway Beach Boulevard. That was fun because the Fecund Clown, as it was known then, had sculptures and paintings throughout and we would play in the storefront window on Sunday nights to the delights of those cruising the “dirty boulevard,” as it was then known. But alas, Sandy in her infinite wisdom put an end to the Fecund Clown. But now a brave entrepreneur has opened a new studio in Rockaway called AB Studios on Rockaway Beach Boulevard, not far from the old Clown, but on the other side of the street. It has only one room, but perhaps can grow. It’s a start, and we will be using it in the coming months. But since Sandy took away the Fecundity, we have been venturing into Brooklyn on Flat-

The Rockaway Times

bush Avenue for the last three years. And what a treat that has been. You see, a studio caters to anyone who is willing to pay the fee. And this particular studio has four separate rooms, each sound proofed, each outfitted with equipment and staffed by really nice people. But to get into the studio you have to navigate a few things first, like parking. Flatbush Avenue just north of Kings Highway is populated with Chinese food places, Caribbean food places, and dollar vans, which all mean it is virtually impossible to park. But once you do, you then need to press the buzzer to get past the cameras at the door. Security is taken seriously. Then up a very narrow set of steep stairs leading to the second floor. There are multiple no smoking signs that greet you upon arriving at the studio, but it is difficult to see them through the smoke. There is a fish tank that appears to have no fish in it, but we are told they are behind the rocks. The fish are smart on Flatbush Avenue. The clientele however are as

ROCKAWAY’S FIRST SELF-SERVE FROZEN YOGURT SHOP

eclectic as they come. In one studio there is usually a drummer all by himself, that drums for literally hours. He is very good, but have you heard the term “drums to the beat of a different drummer?” This is the guy. In one of the other studios is a group I can only describe as Hassidic, and they rock like there is no tomorrow. I wonder sometimes if they know something we don’t. Usually in one of the other studios there is a group that is comprised of about fourteen players of all races, ages and hairstyles. I don’t know what they do in the studio because we have seven players and on some nights can literally wake the dead, they have double the number and I don’t hear anything coming out of the room! I am slightly suspicious of them, although apparently they have never seen the no-smoking sign either, much to the delight of some in our band. I read this weekend that there is a terrible problem with rac-

I think they may have deposited a few skunks in the studio, how else could I describe the aroma emanating from certain studio rooms. All of this makes for a creative mix when in the studio, with the seven of us working out beginnings and end-

Well, maybe the fish suffer a bit. Do fish have ears? Anyway, here is hoping that the new studio grows, adds a diverse roster of musicians, allows a skunk or two to visit, and puts up no smoking signs. A fish tank wouldn’t hurt either. Could the Chinese restaurant be far behind?

The Rockaway Times The City Council recently proposed railroad fares be lowered to the subway fare without considering the economics. Unnecessarily high railroad fares result in making longer, more indirect and time-consuming trips to save money. Similarly, it should not cost double fare to use a bus, subway and another bus, or three buses. This causes longer, indirect two bus trips resulting in having to provide more unnecessary expensive bus service, since providing rail service costs less per passenger. Unlimited rides for trips where all transfers can be made within two hours is fairer than a system allowing for unlimited use of trains, but only two buses or a bus/train combination. Watch for Part 2 next week where Allan will focus on more ideas! Allan Rosen is a former Director of Bus Planning for MTA NYCT and a member of the Queens Public Transit Committee Got an idea to improve transportation in the City or Rockaway? Send your 500 word article to RickHoran@SmarterStreets.org.

Mass Transit Ideas for the New Year – Part I By Allan Rosen

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and its scaled down version, Select Bus Service (SBS), have been painted as the panaceas to improving mass transit in this city. The entire New York City Council and a variety of transportation improvement groups have gotten on the bandwagon. The exceptions are those council members who have not taken a position and Daneek Miller, a former bus driver, who supports the concept but is opposed to how it is being implemented. That mirrors my view. A press conference was held recently in front of City Hall in support of the Woodhaven/Cross Bay BRT. Mayor de Blasio’s goal is to institute another 12 SBS routes by the end of his first term. He in-

tends to jam this down the throats of New Yorkers without adequate community input and study by spreading incomplete and misinformation. Unfortunately, too many are falling into the trap of believing the SBS BS. This goal is as unobtainable as Vision Zero, which is designed to slow transportation in the name of making our streets safer. I previously wrote a column for “Ideas” expressing my opposition to the Woodhaven/Cross Bay plan mentioning an idea I have for a simple change in the law, which would speed buses much more than SBS or BRT, and without the expense. The truth is there is no panacea to improving mass transit. One size does not fit all. Solutions must be tailored to solve different problems through a

multi-faceted approach. However, the politicians are more interested in getting their pictures in the paper and going on record for something that does not cost them any money. The Feds will be footing the bill for much of SBS/BRT which is easy to get behind. Most of the real solutions are not obvious. The obvious ones are adequate maintenance and capital expansion, both of which require adequate funding. Another is rationalization of intra-city LIRR fares so that they at least be less expensive than express bus fares which should not exceed twice the regular fare. (Express bus fares also need to be lowered to no more than twice the subway fare and offer off-peak discounts to encourage ridership on underutilized buses.)

Blocks Of The Rock: Beach 119th Street By Dylan Watton

What’s in a block? Rockaway, like the majority of the city, is mostly laid out as a grid with intersecting north/south and east/west streets, avenues, and boulevards. But while the layout may seem cookie-cutter, the makeup of each individual block varies greatly from end to end, even within the same neighborhoods. Every street in Rockaway is unique, reflective of its own architecture, landscaping, location, and most importantly people. The middle block of Beach 119th Street, located between Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Newport Avenue, typifies this idea. “There’s a difference between the 200 block and the beach block on 119th Street,” Mike Honan said. Mike and his wife Fran have lived on this block for 33 years. “I initially bought this home as an invest-

ment in 1977 or ’78,” Mike said. “It was a legal three-family at the time. This house has been very adaptable to our ever-changing needs. It’s still a place our daughters come back to even though they’ve moved away.” Bobby Zimmer’s family moved to Beach 119th just before he was born in 1950. “It was just the sense of community on this block that made it great,” he said. “Then you had a broom, you swept a little in front of your house and the kids played skelly in the street. You didn’t need a lot of money to have fun in the street outside. A refrigerator box could entertain kids all day long.” The houses on this block are often towering with steep roofs and wide bottoms while also being located on slightly higher ground than the counterparts south on the beach block. “We had six feet of water in the basement, but on the beach block they suffered the

wrath of the nature more so than we did,” Mike said. “They had bulldozers and backhoes digging out huge dunes of sand.” Fran Honan noted that their block has a variety of housing and people not found in other parts of Rockaway. “We’re a mixed block, not just Irish-Catholic. We have Section 8 housing here. There’s a lot of middle-class civil servants who’ve been priced out of Belle Harbor, firefighters, police officers, teachers. Everyone is always neighborly.” Another longtime resident is Tom Pulkoski, who has lived

here for 31 years. “I love the people. They’re all hard-working. They’re active, and as a community everybody sticks together. We try to get things done together and we’re always trying to help a neighbor out.” Several years ago, Pulkoski started a tradition that continues on to this day, the New Year’s Day polar plunge. “Me, my children, my niece, and a friend of mine up the block just wanted to jump in many years ago and we just did it.” He seemed somewhat unsure of how it be-

came such an anticipated annual event. “I didn’t convince anybody to come! Somebody would say are you going are you going and I would say I’m going January 1 at 12:00. Every year I see somebody different. People just walking by jump in sometimes. It’s kind of comical. They just stripped down to their underwear and jumped in with us.” Pulkoski and his wife Laura have made it something that everybody on the block and around Rockaway can look for-

ward to. “She comes from a tradition of having family friends on New Year’s Day, so we mixed it together. People come over to the house. Now that our children got older their friends come and participate, too.” For many years Beach 119th Street was home to a block party as well, including the two years post-Sandy (though not in 2015). “We ran the parties for several years,” Fran said. “There have always been people more financially able than others, so we devised a plan. On Saturdays we would run a 50-50 raffle where we’d put some of the leftover money in

a fund. We did that for a couple of months until we had enough money for the permits and everything.” This method created a sense of community and belonging on the block, according to Fran. “Everybody felt welcome. Even if they only contributed once or twice to the fund they still felt they had done something to make it happen. Kids from other blocks could always come as long as they behaved themselves.” One more thing that brought the block together was the installation of a flag pole at the beach. “One time we had an idea to do something patriotic,” Zimmer said. “Mike Honan was the steward behind running a 50-50 to install a 30-foot flagpole at the end of the block. We were able to improve the garden in front of the property and Parks granted us the property to build it. The flags really brought us together in the summertime. One day I hope we can get a flagpole back and renew it.” Honan added “Residents from the senior home up the block would maintain the area around the home. People from bay to beach contributed to it.”

Page 21 Things have not remained static on Beach 119th Street. “It’s gotten better over the years,” Jim Warren, a 20-year resident, said. “There were a lot of run-down houses when I first moved here. Everybody is taking pride in their houses more than before.” Pulkoski noted “I’ve seen the older people [sell] and move away then younger families came with their children. It’s nice to see younger kids. I felt like I was the young person on the block when I moved here and now I’m like the older person on the block.” Zimmer said that large buildings have taken the place of smaller houses and some characteristics have changed. “It used to be one car in the driveway and three bikes on the lawn. Now its two cars on the lawn and a bike in the driveway.” Nobody on the block expressed a need to live anywhere else, especially Mike Honan. “I have no desire to move. They’ll end up carrying me out of this house.” We’ll continue to feature other blocks throughout the year. If you’d like to talk about what makes your block special, contact the author at dylan@rockawaytimes.com.

Dear Editor: After Hurricane Sandy, the eastbound lane on Shore Front Parkway was divided into two lanes. One for drivers, and the other for joggers, bikers, Parks Department vehicles, and Skanska vehicles. The westbound lane, has parked vehicles on the right side, and just enough room for one-lane driving. Many residents & non- residents (that don’t know the terrain) are forcing drivers over to the right side of the road , as they create a dangerous left lane. and exceeding the 25 mph speed limit. Large SUVs and trucks are the main culprits. The DOT (Department of Transportation) needs to put up signs

Dear Editor: (For Peter Mahon, “Between The Bridges) Although I am a 40+ year resident of Belle Harbor I eagerly look forward every week to reading your column. This week I did find one glaring mistake when you quoted yourself as being “an ex-Marine! There is no such thing as an ex-Marine! You should know that from the day you graduate “boot camp until the day you die you are a Marine. Andrew Rohman (Sgt..-USMC-1963-’69)

There is an area in the middle of the Pacific Ocean where no longer needed spacecrafts are and have been deposited. It is known as the "Spacecraft Cemetery." The phrase "to turn a blind eye" comes from British Vice Admiral Nelson, who was blind in one eye. In one battle, when he was signaled to stop firing at Danish ships, he held up a telescope to his blind eye and said, "I really do not see the signal," and attacked anyway. Vending machines kill more people every year than sharks. Vending machines kill an average of 13 people per year and sharks only 5.

Japan and Russia still have not signed a peace treaty to end World War II due to the Kuril Island dispute. Of all the countries that celebrate an Independence Day, 58 are independent of the U.K., 26 of France, 21 of Russia, and 21 of Spain. The U.S.A. is the only country that does not dip its flag to the host country during opening ceremonies at the Olympics. When the U.S. flag holder was asked to do so for King Edward VII at the 1908 London games, he supposedly responded, "This flag dips to no earthly king." The current emergency closure on Beach

Channel Drive demonstrates the need for an immediate inspection of the entire stretch along Jamaica Bay to ensure that no other areas are in a dangerous state.” DOT has not given an estimate on how long the road will be closed. The Rockaway Times

reached out to the agency asking for a timetable and received a response from a spokesperson saying only “NYC DOT and other City agencies are still in the process of conducting inspections of the one-block segment. The roadway closure will be in effect until further notice. Motorists are advised of a detour in place.” Tom McNicholas owns The Wave gas station on Beach Channel Drive across from the entrance to Rockaway Freeway. “I was very surprised when they shut [the road] down. I was never given a heads up or someone telling me ‘You might be interested in knowing they’re closing it down.’” When asked if business has changed since the closure McNicholas said “1000 percent, yes. Eighty percent of traffic came through Beach Channel Drive. Now they come flying off that turn [from the Freeway] like it’s the Indianapolis 500. Business has been affected tremendously.” He is hoping for more information from the DOT soon. “I come in the morning and drive on it every day and didn’t notice anything. I’d really be interested in knowing what the prognosis is.”

Rockaway Playland Tied To Assassination By Emil R. Lucev, Sr. & Daughter, Katie Lucev

Lamarcus Adna Thompson, the inventor of the Roller-Coaster in 1884 was running his Midway full of amusements at the Pan-American Exposition of 1901 held at Buffalo, New York. President William Mc Kinley was shot in the Temple of Music and died a few days later. As a result of the

assassination, attendance at the Expo fell drastically causing Thompson’s to lose revenue. His good friend, George C. Tilyou, who ran Steeplechase Parks in Coney Island and in Rockaway Beach – persuaded Thompson to move his midway to the east side of Tilyou’s Steeplechase in Rockaway Beach (between Bch. 97th and

A. Thompson Amusement Park on the property. Thompsons Park thrived and was rebuilt in 1924 with a giant roller coaster some 700 feet long. During the late 1920’s the park was sold to a local group

known as Geist Associates and was rebuilt again, then reopened as ROCKAWAY’S PLAYLAND! Under the expert management of the Geist Family, Rockaway’s Playland survived the destruction of Seaside Amusements by Robert Moses in the late 1930’s. Playland finally closed up in 1985, a victim of the day and outlasted Coney Island’s Great Steeplechase Park by 20 years!!! The park was torn down in 1987 and replaced by housing. R.I.P.

about non-existent. Remember, the good news is that you can reset your resolutions on January 14th (Orthodox New Year) and again on February 8th (Chinese New Year). After that, even I can’t help you. In any event, may all your troubles last only as long as your quickly discarded New Year’s resolutions. This Saturday, January 9, the Broad Channel VFW will be hosting a “Friend in Need” fundraiser from 8 p.m. to midnight with a $10 donation at the door. There will be three bands, door prizes, raffles and 50/50’s. The fundraiser is to assist Minnie Horan, a member of the Broad Channel Horan family, in dealing with some serious and expensive medical problems. Since we are now fully one week into 2016 I have to ask, how’s all those New Year’s resolutions going for all of you out there? As for me, my 2016 resolution is a fairly attainable one - not to go up in flames while attempting to balance myself on a hoverboard! As my recently broken right foot attests to the fact that I have difficulty maintaining my balance with both of my feet planted directly on terra firma, you can bet the odds of me climbing aboard one of those contraptions are just

ahead of the curve on this one as can be attested to the fact that the canteen at the Broad Channel VFW was packed New Year’s Day with many Broad Channel residents enjoying the copious food and libations on hand. Don’t just take my word for it, Broad Channel’s former and famous postal delivery woman, Kathleen Reardon Savino, remarked “Stayed in New Year’s Eve but spent a great day with…friends at the VFW New Year’s Day… We had delicious food, snacks and of course lots of fun!” As Kevin pointed out in his Boyleing Points almost three years ago, afternoon dining with a side of drinking can help you maintain the wild and crazy reputation you worked so hard to achieve in your younger days. You can still appear really decadent and devilmay-care and no one has to know you’re planning to be in bed by 9. To those who chafe at such goings and

The Real Diehl Think Small, Baby Steps By MJ Diehl

THINK SMALL - BABY STEPS TO A BETTER YOU IN THE NEW YEAR. I hate to break it to you, but chances are you’re NOT going to be featured on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition this year. You won’t grab the gold in the 2016 Summer Olympics. And, statistically speaking, you’re more likely to become President than Powerball your way to financial freedom (Go for it- you’re definitely more qualified than Trump). Nevertheless, there are New Year’s goals you can actually set and achieve—as long as you think resolution, rather than revolution. Unless you’re among the 16 percent of us whose only resolution is not to make any resolutions, we’ve all been victim of ERS (Extreme Resolution Syndrome). The ball drops and so does our ability to think rationally. Christ-

mas visions of sugarplum fairies are irreverently replaced with insanely unattainable fantasies of our “Super Selves.” Things we haven’t achieved in a lifetime, we resolve to achieve in a year and typically give up at the sixmonth mark. In fact, fewer people are able to keep NYE resolutions than find legal parking on 129th Street—a mere 8 percent actually achieve their New Year’s goals according to the University of Scranton Journal of Clinical Psychology. Smoking, sugar, sample sales— we’ll resolve to quit anything, except lying to ourselves. No worries though, I’m here to keep you honest, or at least prevent you from facing that soul-crushing sense of disappointment that comes with another year of unrealized resolutions. Believe it or not, experts say that people who make realistic resolutions are much more likely to commit to change than

those who just randomly try to change. So, go ahead make those resolutions, set some goals, but keep in mind your resolutions may need a makeover more than you do. Think small. Take baby steps. And, with that in mind, here’s a few revamped suggestions from the resolution hot-list, to set you on the path to success: • QUIT SMOKING: If you can’t give up cigarettes, give up other people’s cigarettes. This way, you’ve baby-stepped yourself to an achievable limit, and helped both yourself and your friends with that money-saving resolution in the bargain. • GET FIT: Choose an exercise plan that does not involve a remote, an emoticon or a selfie-stick—your other body parts need to work out as much as your fingers. Take a walk on the beach; wean your ten-year-old dog off the wee-wee pads. Download a militant app that shames you into your ideal shape. I love Sworkit, Myfitnesspal and the scientifically proven seven-minute-workout. Added

The Rockaway Times

bonus: you’ll burn at least two calories during the download process. EAT HEALTHY. Take Plum Tomatoes off speed dial or, at least, order pizza with veggies. Eliminate soda/diet sodacontrary to popular belief, it does not “cancel out” fat calories and health-wise, it’s carbonated Satan. SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT: Accept that global warming is real and recycle things other than jokes and yesterday’s socks. SPEND QUALITY TIME WITH FAMILY that doesn’t involve a court order, a monetary bribe, or a goodie-bag worthy of the Oscars’ suite. MEET NEW PEOPLE: Spend less time posting pics of your cats and kids on Facebook, and more face-to-face time with people who have cats and kids. STOP PROCRASTINATION: Stop reading this article and start your New Year right!

Military Dogs Getting What’s Needed By Payson Parmenter

While the devotion of military personnel to their working dogs is indisputable, that love has not always had the needed support to ensure the well-being of military dogs upon their retirement. The formal training of dogs for military service began during World War 2. William Putney, a veterinarian and marine in that war, played a big part in forming the Marine War Dog Corps, and then after the war retrained the dogs and had them adopted, but throughout the ensuing years, retired military dogs, classified as equipment, were routinely euthanized (in the case of the Vietnam War, they were euthanized or abandoned when the troops were leaving) until the passing of Robbie’s law in 2000. The National Defense Authorization Act of 2013 included an amendment called the

Canine Members of the Armed Forces Act. It was admirably ambitious, and was introduced by Senator Richard Blumenthal and Congressman Walter Jones. Its purpose was to have retired military dogs brought back to the United States, continue to receive veterinary care, and be classified as canine members of the Armed Forces instead of as equipment. The House passed the whole bill, but the Senate took out the part about reclassifying the dogs, veterinary care was not authorized, and by the time the bill became law, it only allowed but did not require the transport of the dogs to the United States. Veterans, wanting to adopt the dog they had worked so closely with while overseas, still faced the daunting tasks of transporting the dog at their own expense - sometimes first having to locate it - and in some cases having to fight for years to be

reunited with the dog. The 2016 NDAA, just signed by the President in November, requires that the dogs be brought back. They “shall” be brought back to the U.S., not “may” be brought back, and the dogs’ latest handler was given first right of adoption. The American Humane Association was a driving force behind this, with Senator Claire McCaskill and Congressman Frank LoBiondo introducing the bill with the all-important change in wording. That is the good news. The even better news would be the change in the dogs’ classification from equipment to canine members of the Armed Forces. Post-military career veterinary care can run in the tens of thousands of dollars, and would only be covered if the dogs were considered members of the Armed Forces. Many dogs are retired when they are

3 or 4 years old, but this is after having been deployed over and over again until they are not useable. They retire with such disorders as PTSD, seizure disorders from having suffered heat stroke, damaged paws from the terrain in the Middle East (even military-issued soldiers’ boots do not fare well in that heat) and many other serious problems. Their care can be so expensive that not all handlers (or well-qualified civilian adopters) wanting to adopt them can afford to do so. Surprisingly, some military housing does not allow retired military dogs, and so handlers who are lifelong military and live on base may have that second obstacle to adoption. Senator Blumenthal has said that he will continue to pursue the change in military dog status, and the wonderful U.S. War Dog Association is always in the arena, so time will tell.

Volleyball isn’t just for the summer anymore. Get set. The West End Temple Volleyball Center is here to serve. The Rockaway Beach Volleyball League has proven popular with hundreds heading to Riis Park each summer for some friendly yet fierce competition. Now with West End Temple opening its brand new gymnasium to volleyball enthusiasts, you can work on your skills indoors. Marie McGoldrick-Raico has teamed up with West End Temple to bring an indoor Volleyball Center to Neponsit and they’re looking for players. On Sunday, January 10, there will be an open house at the new facility at 147-02 Newport Avenue from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. People will get a chance to check out the new gym and register for teams or clinics. “Basketball is king around here, but the people of the Temple have helped me get a space dedicated to volleyball and now we’re trying to get these leagues up and running,” Raico said. Hoping to keep the thrill of the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League going, Raico is providing an outlet for an indoor adult league. “We can have up to 12 teams, with about 12 peo-

ple per team. We already have some team spots filled and registration will be open until the slots are filled,” Raico said. She hopes to start the adult league games on January 19. The adults will play on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Raico hopes to make it a fun night out for men and women. She’s planning to partner with local restaurants and bars to offer after-game deals on Tuesdays and Thursdays. She is also looking to start a boys’ volleyball clinic for middle school and high school boys. “There’s no place for boys to really play. Volleyball is seen as a girl-dominated sport, but more boys are starting to play so we’re trying to offer more training opportunities for the boys here,” Raico said. The boys’ clinic will be held on Monday evenings starting January 25. She will also a hold high school girl’s league on Sunday afternoons and there may be opportunities for open gym time by reservation. Raico, a professional volleyball coach, brings many years of experience to the court. Over the past year, she has begun a league for young girls, starting with about eight mem-

Continued from Page 35 bers playing on the beach and growing it to more than 50 girls from Rockaway Park to Breezy Point. The girls, mostly sixthto-eighth graders, have continued training at the new indoor facility since early December. Raico has not only developed a strong team and community atmosphere among her players, but she also encourages them to give back. During their holiday party in mid-December, the girls were encouraged to donate new pajamas for the homeless children of the Abraham House in Harlem. The girls were able to collect about 70 pairs. “Sometimes kids don’t realize how good they have it, so we’re not only trying to build up a team, but we’re teaching them how to give back. Some kids don’t even have pajamas, so at our holiday party, I asked them if they’d be interested in using their babysitting money and buying a pair of pajamas for a homeless kid around their age,” Raico said. “They

did it with such enthusiasm, it made me so happy. Some kids brought five or six pairs and it was so moving to see that. Sometimes I don’t think we give kids enough opportunities to give back to others and these girls came through with full force. It was overwhelming.” The collection was held in conjunction with Rockaway WISH. “Some of the ladies from WISH were there to encourage the girls who could be the next generation of WISHers,” Raico said. After the pajamas were collected, they were given to Sister Mary of the Abraham House and were distributed to children in need. The girls’ league may collaborate with Abraham House and other charities in the future. Raico believes that providing an outlet for local kids to play

volleyball year-round is also good for their futures. “Volleyball is such a big part of the culture of the community and until now, you’ve had to go over the bridge to play in the winter. This is a convenient place for people to hone their skills. You can’t just play in July and August and put the ball down until spring. Beach volleyball is starting to become a Division I sport in colleges. If we can get our kids to start playing early and making it fun for them, it could be beneficial for their future and lead to scholarship opportunities in college. The Temple has allowed us another opportunity to nurture a love of the game in our younger generations and to continue the love for adults,” she said. Those interested in signing up for the adult leagues or middle school to high school kids who are interested in the clinics can find out more at the open house on Sunday. However, those who can’t attend can get more information by contacting Marie McGoldrick-Raico at memesetter@

The Rockaway Times aol.com or call the West End Temple office at 718-634-0301. Incorporating volleyball into the mix is part of West End Temple’s mission to become more of a community center, which is open to all. The Temple took a beating during Hurricane Sandy and has had a long road leading to recovery, with more still to be done. The Temple cannot use FEMA funds to repair the religious aspects of the building, but opening its building and brand-new gym to community use can help them. “The women at the Temple are looking to maximize this space. They’re still struggling to come back and I feel for them. They’re looking to use this as an opportunity to continue to rebuild. They’re also very community oriented. They see the vision of what the community needs as a whole and not just the Jewish community,” Raico said. In addition to volleyball, West End Temple hopes to rent out the gym for parties and other community events. Call the office for more information regarding rentals.

Diary Of A Fat Man There’s Gonna Be A Resolution By Bruce Bernfeld

“He who breaks a resolution is a weakling; He who makes one is a fool. — F.M. Knowles. I thought I’d share some of my 2016 resolutions with you, being that it is my first column of 2016: One through nine are: Exercise. Number 10 is to come up with nine excuses for why I didn’t exercise. Here are some weight loss resolutions I hope you guys didn’t make. They almost always backfire. “I want to lose 20 pounds. Dropping 20 pounds is a great long-term goal, but you tend to fall off track when they have such a lofty resolution. “I’m going to try the ________ diet. Fill in the blank with any fad diet and you’re doomed for failure. A typical diet-of-the-moment

requires cutting out one or more major food groups, like fruits, grains, or meats. That’s simply unhealthy! “I’m going to eat 900 calories a day until I lose the weight. Sure, severely restricting your calorie intake will spur weight loss, but you’ll gain it all back as soon as you start eating normally again (not to mention that starving yourself is dangerous). “I’m going on a juice cleanse. After a holiday binge, a detox may seem like a good idea, but an all-ornothing approach to weight loss will fail. “I’m going to cut calories by skipping breakfast. Research shows that skipping a morning meal will put you on the fast track to weight gain, not loss. A better idea is to stop trying to overhaul your entire

diet in a day! Resolve to think small and you can reach any diet goal -- one focused step at a time. Why not start with these simple steps: 2016 Diet Resolution No. 1 : Go Slow. Resolving to get more fiber in your diet this year? Maybe more fish or fresh fruit? Any diet change is easier if you take slow, small steps. For example: Vow to add a piece of produce to your brown bag lunch. 2016 Diet Resolution No 2: Drink Water. A lot of water. (I drink seltzer...by the case! Just as good). Water is cheap (well it used to be cheap) fat-free, and gives your body a quenching boost. And we are lucky to live in NYC were the water is delicious! Find the idea of eight cups a day daunting? Think small: Resolve to drink one more cup of water today than you had

yesterday. And forget what Mommy used to say, drink water before, DURING and after your meals. It goes a long way in helping to fill you up! (Soup, at the beginning of a meal does the same thing!! A good habit to get into, especially since it is bound to get cold here in Rockaway someday!) 2016 Diet Resolution No. 3: Go for the Gold ... and Red ... and Purple. Colorful produce is packed with disease-fighting plant compounds, so when you shop, reach for a rainbow. Designate a colora-day. Maybe Mondays are yellow, with grapefruit or golden apples, while Tuesdays are purple with plum and eggplant. Try to stay away from anything WHITE!! (Bread, flour, sugar, rice, po-

By Artie Wallace

With this being the first article of the New Year, I would like to start off wishing everyone the best for 2016. This is a great idea for a kid’s room. Most of us have an old picture frame around the house, if not you can pick up a cheap one at any discount store. Then all you need is crayons, glue, a little paint and some creativity. Start off painting the frame a color that will go good with your kid’s room. You can glue a piece of oak tag or colored paper to the backing for additional color effect (be sure to apply a thin layer of glue over the entire surface evenly). Draw a rough outline of the letter (or design) you want to create with the crayons.

Blueberry-Dijon Chicken By Sharon Feldman

Blueberries and chicken may seem like a strange combination, but prepare to be pleasantly surprised. I add a sprinkling of minced fresh basil as the finishing touch. Serves: 4 4 boneless skinless chicken breast halves (6 ounces each) ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon butter ½ cup blueberry preserves 1/3 cup raspberry vinegar 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard

Page 39

Minced fresh basil or tarragon, optional Sprinkle chicken with salt and pepper. In a large skillet, cook chicken in butter over medium heat for 6-8 minutes on each side on until thermometer reads 120 degrees. Remove and keep warm. In the same skillet, combine the preserves, vinegar, blueberries and mustard, stirring to loosen browned bits from pan. Bring to a boil. Cook and stir until thickened. Serve chicken with basil or thyme if desired.

Using glue (most craft glue will work), lay out the crayons to create your letter or design. You may need to cut some crayons to fit as needed. Allow to dry. If you want to get a little more creative and decorative, once the glue is dry here is an additional step that would make this project more unique.

Using a standard hair dryer on high setting. Heat the crayons till they start to melt and the colors start to run. If you rotate the frame while doing this, it will create an effect of the colors all flaring out from the letter (or your design). Once done, most kids would love to have this hanging in their room. There are much more creative things to do with crayon art that would look great in other rooms of the house (hallways, bathrooms even the living room). If you would like me to get into more advanced projects with crayon art, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail. com and I will gladly include these in future articles. Tell me what you would like to read about in future DIYer articles, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail.com

Be Well Be Happy RESOLVING TO GIVE By Sarah Arikian

So now it is January, and I am still mulling over December highlights. One of the best things about December is giving, and whatever your faith or traditions, a lot of us spend the month of December thinking about others. At home there is excitement about wrapping and sending off gifts to family living abroad, and of course figuring out ways to please my kids differently but equally and fairly. Some years we have taken gifts to a shelter or a daycare or left unwrapped goodies at the church. This year my daughter told me about a wonderful organization called New York Cares. Registration is easy: create a profile on www.newyorkcares. org and attend an orientation. There are dozens of orientation venues all over New York City, including Arverne

Library; I chose the digital version. The rep, Patrick, was great - warm and passionate about the benefits of helping fellow New Yorkers. You can pick and choose projects and try several before committing to any one longer term one. There are more than 1,500 flexibly scheduled volunteer projects each month that address a huge variety of community needs. He was really inspiring so as soon as the online session wrapped up I did an online search and signed up for a few projects in December. I quickly found myself at Visions, a center for the visually impaired in Chelsea, surrounded by a group of fun, young volunteers dishing up vegetable lasagna for a holiday meal, helping the guests with their finicky plastic cutlery, trying hard not to pet the lovely working service dogs and singing along to some boisterous and rather excruci-

ating holiday songs on a rickety piano. I remembered at the last minute to whip off the hairnet before diving into the subway a couple of hours later. Then later on that week, I found myself in a Greenwich Village library basement with 20 other women - several from Scotland, so we had a good chat about haggis and turnips as we knitted squares for patchwork blankets for babies. This was a project called Blankets of Love and it was so special that I signed up for subsequent Wednesdays going into the new year. So I am really looking forward to spending a bit of time this year helping to make my city an even better place, and meeting some caring, interesting people along the way. Another way of giving that I really believe in is giving yourself the gift of a regular yoga practice. Yoga really does

bring about better health and well-being, greater awareness of ourselves and others, improved sleep, less fatigue, and healthier body weight. And I know that thinking small is good, toofive minutes of sitting quietly and still or standing up tall in front of a sunrise or lying down as the sun sets and breathing calmly weaves its magic throughout our body and into the world that we share. Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as ever you can.” ~ John Wesley Sarah Arikian was born in London and has lived in Rockaway for 30 years with her husband and three children. She teaches yoga at Ocean Bliss Yoga Studio.
