New Year’s New Baby Just after the new year began, Rockaway residents Molly Casiano and Vincent John became parents for the first time when they welcomed Kenzo Ezekiel John to the world at 12:14 a.m. on New Year’s Day, making him St. John’s Episcopal Hospital’s first baby of the year. Baby Kenzo entered the world at 4 lbs., 13 ounces, 18 inches long. Born shy of fullterm and jaundice, baby Kenzo is thriving through the use of a Giraffe Incubator Carestation and a GE Healthcare Bilisoft Phototheraphy System that helps alleviate jaundice. Last year, the hospital raised $20,000 to purchase a second Giraffe Incubator and is currently fundraising to purchase additional Bilisoft Phototheraphy systems. The hospital showered the family with gifts to celebrate the momentous occasion including a stroller, clothing, a baby care kit, and a baby bouncer. The family also received a baby

monitor courtesy of Jzanus—a Long Island-based company who is generously donating baby monitors to each baby born at SJEH in the month of January. “As a first-time mom I knew nothing about jaundice and was nervous,” Casiano said. “The fact that he (baby Enzo) is able to be in the incubator, use the Bilisoft, and stay in my

room with me at the same time makes me feel comfortable. He’s comfortable, and it’s like he’s lying on a beach.” “The Bilisoft is what makes his skin go from yellowish pigment to normal,” John said. “It’s perfect that the community contributed to fundraising for this equipment just for the little ones because, at the end of the day, babies are our

legacy.” The Rockaways have a higher percentage of preterm births than New York City overall at 11.3% compared to 8.7%, a fact that has driven SJEH’s fundraising efforts for life-saving equipment for babies. And we’re gonna film it and I’m gonna write about it—God knows, I need the material. If you want to see how this test run goes, you might as well

TWO FOR THE ROAD I was looking around the house for waterproof socks and padded underwear. And just for the record, I don’t mean padded socks and waterproof underwear. Anyway, it seems, I wasn’t the only one getting prepared for my upcoming trip. In my search for these essentials, I came across a box of party supplies under a blanket in a back closet. I didn’t even have time to scratch my head before the doorbell rang. There was a beer and liquor delivery man at the door. He gave me a big smile and a hey buddy hello. Ok, if I drop this stuff off a couple days early? I thought there might be a mistake but he said, nope, says right here, deliver to the wife who will remain nameless. And, he says with a shrug, somebody wrote “woo-hoo!” on the order. Can’t blame her. I’m not exactly a human disco ball in January. So, rather than subject her to my seasonal funk and funless face, I’m hitting the road. I’m getting on my bike with the plan to ride from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina to Tampa, Florida. It’s a 500-mile test run. I’ve got a cross-country trip on the bucket list. But first things first. Now, I’m seasonally boring, but not completely stupid. I’m not doing this 500mile trek alone. I’ll be riding with Rick Horan who rides one of those recumbent bikes. He looks like he’s in a chaise lounge, going 15 miles an hour. And, yea, I know. There’s something weird

about guys who ride those things. I mean, I’ve known Rick for years but not well enough to state unequivocally if he’s a serial killer or not, so we’re getting separate tents. And separate fleabag motel rooms, the whole way. If we can stand each other on this ride, we’ll map out the cross-country journey in early spring. I’ll do anything to avoid March in Rockaway. Anyway, I’m bringing a basketball with me, hoping to make friends. But it’ll be like looking for Dr. Livingston, I presume, because my new friends have to be over sixty. Golden age guys still playing hoops are hard to find though you can usually smell them before seeing them. Bengay and Atomic Balm are not only introductory signs but gateway anesthetics for the guys still lacing them up. The potbelly at the end of this 500-mile rainbow is an event called The Tampa Bay Masters. It’s a tournament with age brackets beginning at 40+. Organizers tell me they’ve got guys in their 80s still playing! Wow. Though that reminds me, it’s Florida. I’d rather see them driving to the basket than driving on the sidewalk. Maybe I’ll be a ringer and try to pass as an 80-year old so I can dominate. My sidekick Rick, who can’t play basketball for shinola, is always on the lookout for the next big idea. He’ll be talking to strangers asking them if they have thousand-dollar ideas—he knows they’re not giving him their million-dollar ones. My idea is AARP, Advil, Ace

MTA’s Proposed Queens Bus Redesign Could Give the Q53 the Axe By Kami-Leigh Agard

On New Year’s Eve, while most were celebrating the upcoming New Year, the MTA released a sweeping 432-page draft bus plan that would overhaul the entire borough of Queens’ bus systems, and the Q53-SBS bus, which serves the western end of the Rockaway peninsula, may potentially be going under the guillotine, leaving many residents concerned. Several locals took to Facebook expressing their dismay about losing a bus they heavily depend on to get to work and children to school. The bus redesign may be the first major one in Queens in over a century, but some argue it will negatively overhaul locals’ commute. On Facebook, one frustrated local stated, “The Q52 bus runs half empty most of the time! The Q53 brings in beachgoers. The buses are packed in the summer. The shuttle is completely unreliable. I live

near the Q52 but walk the extra couple of blocks because it (the Q53) comes more often.” Another outraged local said, “The bus ‘REDESIGN’ is supposed to be better service. However, it’s a back doorway for service cuts! The Q53 is a good bus with frequent service that goes to Elmhurst, Jackson Heights and Woodside from Beach 116th. NYCTBUS will ‘modify’ service and the Q53 will no longer exist!! That’s an example of a drastic cut. It will be a blow to the people and businesses, especially to Beach 116th. We have to make sure this doesn’t happen.” Under the proposed bus draft redesign, the Q53 bus will be eliminated and replaced by the QT52 which will run from Arverne/Beach 54th Street to Elmhurst/Woodhaven Blvd Station. Riders on the west end of Rockaway (Rockaway Park, Belle Harbor, Neponsit, Roxbury and Breezy Point) would need to take the modified QT35 route on Rockaway Beach Blvd

to Beach 108th, transfer to the new Q22T, and take that to Beach 90th, and change again to the QT52 to get to Cross Bay Boulevard and Woodhaven Boulevard. The “old” Q22 would no longer run west of Beach 116th. Riders will need to take the new Q35T route along RBB to Beach 116th or at Beach 108th, and switch to the “new” QT22 to go further east toward Arverne and Far Rockaway. The QT22 will exclusively operate between Cedarhurst/Falcaros Plaza and Rockaway Park/Beach 116th Street. The new QT35—Brooklyn College-Rockaway Park route—will operate between Rockaway Park/Beach 116th Street and Brooklyn College/ Flatbush Ave Station. According to the MTA, the draft plan, which is part of the MTA's Fast Forward plan, a sweeping initiative launched in May 2018 to overhaul the city's subway and bus systems, had several goals: to develop a plan to provide more frequent and

reliable bus service that better satisfies the needs of the borough and address the problems in the borough’s current bus network, which has not substantially changed in decades despite the many changed dynamics of Queens. ceived input from residents on how Queens bus service can best be improved. The Rockaway Times reached out to the MTA press office for some clarification, and to express locals’ concerns. Press officer Amanda Kwan stated: “The Queens bus redesign is the most dramatic one we are doing. Concerned residents should know that this is just a draft. The ‘T’ designation on the proposed new bus routes just indicate ‘temporary.’ The plan may not look the same in the final version. We are redoing the entire Queens bus network to expressly serve residents by streamlining and creating shorter bus routes. This draft is not a done deal. For Rockaway residents concerned about the summer traffic, we have already taken in consideration a seasonal variant for the QT52 route to serve Belle Harbor, Neponsit, and Jacob Riis Park during summer months. “We are excited by the feedback we’ve received so far on our draft plan to dramatically reimagine the Queens bus network, because the redesign is an interactive, customer-led process that will result in better service for hundreds of thousands of customers. What we have proposed is a draft that will change as we get more public input, and everyone will have the opportunity to share feedback. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to give Queens residents the bus service they deserve.” The RT also reached out to local pols to see where they stand on the new MTA bus redesign for Rockaway. Councilman Eric Ulrich stated: “I vehemently oppose the MTA’s proposal to eliminate and alter crucial bus routes in Rockaway, including the Q53 in its entirety, as well as stops along the Q22. The Q53 is a major north/south mode of public transportation along the peninsula. And the proposed changes along the Q22 route would require several hundred students and others to transfer to another bus—sometimes

THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 2020 two—to reach the same destination. Rockaway is already a transportation desert with few options. Instead of expanding alternatives for residents, the MTA is proposing to eliminate them. I urge my constituents in Rockaway to vocalize their concerns by submitting feedback and attending next month’s public session.” Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato agreed: “It's no secret that south Queens, especially Rockaway, has extremely limited transit options. The proposed draft redesign has aspects that will benefit this community, however the plan also proposes the removal of the Q53 which is not welcome in the slightest. That’s why I encourage all folks, especially everyday commuters and students, to come to the RISE Center on February 5 to tell the MTA exactly what they think about these proposals and how they will affect their daily lives, and to leave feedback on the MTA's proposed bus redesign map. This is the first step of many, and we must make sure that we keep what we like and advocate relentlessly for what we need.” Senator Joseph Addabbo is also not a fan of the plan. “I share the concerns that my constituents have expressed to me about the proposed termination of the Q53-SBS route. This route is one of Rockaway’s main transportation options, on a peninsula that for years has witnessed the dire need for more transportation measures, certainly not less. I have reached out to the MTA, and they assured me that there will be no changes as of yet; these are only proposals. We said it last week and we’ll say it again: it’s a scandal! The Department of Design and Construction, the agency allegedly in charge of repairs on this job, should be (should be!) embarrassed and investigate the shoddy work. There are deep potholes and loose gravel which can cause car skidding. It’s outrageous. Councilman Ulrich, we await your reaction. ***** Speaking of City Council members, Donovan Richards, is looking more and more like the next Queens Borough President. He got the backing of the Queens Dem party machine and has announced a couple of big unions support his bid as well. Everyone who runs for office talks a good game when it comes to Rockaway, but Richards has actually represented

The special election is March 24. ***** We got a report of a fire at 150 Beach 110th on Wednesday (you might have heard if you get Citizen Alerts) but it was quickly extinguished. ***** The theater on Beach 116th Street has now been completely razed. The skyline (for now) is open blue sky and it’s a strange sight, not seeing the hulking, crumbling theater hanging over the street. Local Leaders Vow to Continue to Fight for Jamaica Bay Protections By Katie McFadden

Local officials are going to continue to fight to keep Jamaica Bay clean. Senator Joe Addabbo, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato and a number of other activists who keep a watch over the bay, made that message clear during a press conference in front of the body of water they were fighting for. The press conference comes after Governor Cuomo recently vetoed a bill that would protect the bay from being used to dump potentially contaminated dredging material. On Tuesday, January 7, Addabbo, Pheffer Amato and even Brooklyn Assemblywoman Jaime Williams, joined Dan Mundy of the Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers, Don Riepe of the American Littoral Society, civic leaders and others who care deeply about protecting Jamaica Bay, to announce that the fight isn’t over after Cuomo’s veto last month. Both

Pheffer Amato and Addabbo had sponsored the bill, which unanimously passed the assembly and senate, but was shot down when it landed on Cuomo’s desk. During Tuesday’s press conference, both leaders announced that they will be reintroducing legislation. Mundy further explained what the bill intended to do. “Basically, it said that you cannot bring any type of dredge material and put it into Jamaica Bay unless it meets EPA clean standards. We thought it was a no brainer given the fact that after 30 years of work, Jamaica Bay is the cleanest we’ve ever seen,” Mundy said. He added that

the bill would’ve required dredge material to pass federal standards rather than current NYS Department of Environmental Conservation standards. It would also put more permanent protections in place. Cuomo’s veto came as a surprise as he has been supportive of other environmental issues. Some were there to address this, such as activist, John Cori. “The most important thing is that Governor Cuomo needs to realize that he can’t be a part-time environmentalist,” he said. Addabbo spoke about how the bill intended to keep Jamaica Bay protected for years to come. “We padded a bill in 2014. We did it again in 2016. We did it again in 2019 and now it’s going to expire in 2022. So what this bill was going to do was eliminate the sunset clause forever. Let’s do it forever so that we create a legacy of our protected bay for generations to enjoy,” he said. “We move forward, we don’t stop.

We’re going to reintroduce the bill and we’re going to sit down with the DEC again and we’re going to iron this out because the life that surrounds Jamaica Bay depends on this bill and that’s what we’re all about.” Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato announced that this bill will be a big priority this year. “The veto was very disappointing. We’re going to dust ourselves off and we’re going to take that road map and work with the DEC to get a compromise. The legislative session starts tomorrow and it’s the number one priority on my plate,” Pheffer Amato said. Not only will they be introducing legislation, but Mundy also announced that an online petition will circulate to show support for the desire to keep contaminated dredge materials out of the bay, and there will be a heavy social media push to garner more support to send a strong message to Governor Cuomo this year.

On Monday, December 23, and Friday, January 3, Woods had the youth group join St. Dominic’s Outreach in Brooklyn, to help the homeless throughout New York City in what they call, “Midnight Runs.” On these Midnight Runs, students and some parents, as well as former St. Francis de Sales’ Associate Pastor, Fr. Jomar, distributed food, clothing, and toiletries to the homeless. By getting the R.O.C.K involved with St. Dominic’s Outreach, Woods taught her students the importance of neighboring parishes coming together to give to those in need. The R.O.C.K has joined St. Dominic’s Outreach on a Midnight Run in the past, but these two runs were incredibly successful because Woods was able to gain the most support from teens, as well as their parents, than ever before. St. Dominic’s Outreach organized the places and routes

She expresses her gratitude for St. Dominic’s Outreach for letting the R.O.C.K join in their Midnight Runs. “We were so blessed to be a part of their mission and we are looking forward to helping them in the future.” Woods says their participation also served as a reminder to her students to keep “Christ” in Christmas. Although the program focuses on distributing items to those less fortunate, the students who attended the Midnight Runs made an effort to speak to the homeless, spreading holiday cheer. Some even joined along singing Christmas carols when one man started to sing. Fr. Jomar was touched by the youth effort to show the best of humanity, claiming, “The generosity of the kids and their sense of humility to be able to serve people whom they never met before was truly touching to witness.” Continued on page 17

R.O.C.K’S MIDNIGHT RUNS A SUCCESS

The R.O.C.K youth organization is a program dedicated to service, prayer, and leadership. These Midnight Runs are not the only events Woods has organized. She actively looks for different service projects and activities in order to continuously keep her students involved throughout the community. As well as organizing various events throughout the peninsula, she runs prayer and discussion groups during the week, where students can pray for someone special to them, or feel free to talk about whatever is important to them within their lives. With this youth program, Woods strives to create a space where teens can share and express their faith with one another. The R.O.C.K is open to all St. Francis de Sales parishioners in grades seven and eight. Woods highly encourages more teens to come and

join the R.O.C.K. “We’re all called to serve others and I believe it’s vital for our teens to live their faith through action,” Woods said. She teaches her teens, not just through the activities she organizes with the R.O.C.K, but by being a leader by example. You can find her at St. Francis de Sales where she serves as a Eucharistic Minister, as well as often volunteering at church events, such as helping out with the CCD religious education program. The Midnight Runs on December 23 and January 3 proved to be successful in not only helping those in need, but as well as teaching teens within the Rockaway community the importance of giving back to others. And they aren’t finished. “We’re planning to do more Midnight Runs in the future, and we’d love for parishioners to take part in this incredible event,” Woods said.

On Monday, December 30, Giving the Gift of Love Inc. spread the love to local seniors. The organization spent an afternoon at Peninsula Extended Care and Rehab Center, entertaining seniors with music, magic, poetry and more. Broad Channel resident, Dan Guarino, was among the entertainers. He brought out his guitar and sang a few tunes to the residents. “Our seniors at the nursing home were so happy,” Victor Boamah, the head of Giving the Gift of Love Inc., said. Tribute Park Mosaic’s Future in Question By Katie McFadden

About 15 years ago, family members of local 9/11 victims gathered in stained-glass artist, Patrick Clark’s studio, to participate in an almost spiritual effort to help prepare elements of some of the main art pieces that would fill Tribute Park, in memory of their loved ones and all of those who died on September 11, 2001. About a week after 9/11, an FDNY firefighter had collected some stone remnants of the World Trade Center from Ground Zero. When Clark won a contest to create some of Tribute Park’s central art pieces, the firefighter asked Clark if he would like to incorporate the stone into his work. Clark graciously accepted. However, the stone pieces were still covered in some of the dust from Ground Zero. As the dust may have contained remains of those who died on 9/11, Clark tasked local family members of the victims to help him save it. About 15 family members gathered at his studio and with brushes in gloved hands, they carefully brushed the dust off of each piece of stone and saved it. The stone pieces were used to create the outer ring of Clark’s mosaic for Tribute Park, the central piece featuring a navigator star made up of more than 40,000 pieces of glass, which points to the site of the World Trade Center. When the piece was completed and installed in 2005, family members were once again asked to help spread the saved ash from the stones, throughout the flower bed surrounding the mosaic. Each year, around 9/11, the phrase “Never Forget” is often shared, reminding people to never let the tragedy of 9/11 become a lost memory. However, almost 15 years after it was completed, Clark fears the mosaic itself may have been forgotten. Over the past few years, when the community gathers on September 11 for a ceremony at the park, and locals place roses around the mosaic as names of lost loved ones are read out, the central piece has shown in-

creasing signs of severe wear and tear. The last recorded attempt to restore the mosaic was in 2015, when Rockaway native, Michael Solomon, replaced some of its missing pieces. However, when a wood covering meant to protect the piece from damage during recent major renovations of the park, was removed in early December, it was evident that the mosaic is in desperate need of its own restoration. After the memorial ceremony in September 2018, the Friends of Tribute Park (FoTB), a volunteer organization that partners with the Parks Department to maintain the park, announced that the park would be closed for about two years to undergo a major renovation. The more than $2.7 million project was set to “reconstruct Tribute Park due to damage from Hurricane Sandy,” according to the Parks Department. However, the money allocated for that renovation, was mostly dedicated to new electrical and irrigation systems and a new protective shoreline. The art pieces— Clark’s mosaic, the glass dome and Firefighter’s Rock, were not included in this funding. The pieces were covered during the renovations to avoid further damage to them, but when scaffolding was removed, it was evident that time and Hurricane Sandy’s destruction, have taken their toll on the pieces— particularly the mosaic, which is noticeably missing pieces of stone and glass, leaving openings for rain to seep in and do more harm.

Upon seeing the piece, Clark reached out to The Rockaway Times to express his fears that the mosaic’s deterioration and neglect may lead to a severe outcome—being discarded completely. “The Park is undergoing a $2.7 million restoration, but somehow the FoTB did not ask to include any funds for restoration of the mosaic, which was under sea water in Hurricane Sandy. Over the last year of renovations, the seawater penetration caught up with the mosaic and accelerated deterioration. The concern is that the FoTB or the Parks Department might think it’s easier and quicker to throw it in a dumpster while nobody is watching, instead of having it restored,” Clark said. “I don’t think that’s what the community wants.” After Clark expressed his concerns to The Rockaway Times in mid-December, we reached out to both the Parks Department and FoTB to ask if there was any plan in place to address the deteriorating mosaic. A spokesperson from the Parks Department responded, saying, “The mosaic at Tribute Park has deteriorated since its initial installation and requires a skilled artisan to repair. We will reach out to the FoTB to discuss the potential to make repairs to the mosaic.” Bernie Warnock, president of FoTB, then returned a phone call to the RT on December 17, saying, “We’re working on it. The deterioration is to the point where I don’t know if its recoverable,” Warnock said.

“The way it was built, it really wasn’t meant to last this long. If salvageable, we’d love to save it because it’s an earmark of the park. If it’s deteriorated too badly, we’ll have to find other options.” Warnock explained that a meeting was scheduled to be held before the end of 2019 to discuss the mosaic and its future, ahead of the planned spring re-opening of the newly-renovated park. On December 30, the RT reached out to Warnock to follow up and left a message to ask if a meeting was held, and if there was any outcome, but as of press time, the RT did not receive a response. Since then, Clark also sent a letter to the FoTB, expressing his concerns. Clark says they did not respond to him directly. The letter was also printed in The Wave newspaper, to which FoTB wrote a reply, also printed in The Wave. “The board has never discussed or contemplated removing or destroying the mosaic,” the letter said. There was no mention of a plan to restore the mosaic. However, FoTB is now taking measures to protect it. The mosaic was recently shrink-wrapped to prevent further damage from weather events. Clark says whether he or another artist is selected to do the repair work, more needs to be done by the FoTB to ensure the park’s pieces are never forgotten. “I think this organization is supposed to be the steward of the community. The pieces belong to the 9/11 families and the community, and they’re supposed to be taken care of.”

As anyone who has had shingles knows, it is a painful and often debilitating infection that may last for weeks or months. A particularly troubling type of this infection is herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO), or shingles of the eye. It may lead to serious eye problems including blindness and is considered an ophthalmologic emergency. Researchers have been concerned about the rising incidence of shingles and HZO. HZO increased from 10 cases per 100,000 population in 2004 to 30 cases per 100,000 in 2016. No other disease has tripled in incidence in 12 years. Initially, researchers chalked up the rising incidence to the aging of the population, but that does not really explain the huge jump in numbers of cases. In addition, the increase in cases is seen most-

ly in white women and not in white men, blacks, Asians and Latinos. This too cannot be explained. Recently, an interesting theory was proposed. Shingles is caused by the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. Almost all adults over 40 have immunity to the virus because they had chickenpox or were exposed to it. This immunity wanes over time, however. In 1995, the varicella vaccine was introduced and the number of chickenpox cases in the U.S. dropped dramatically. It is important to note, however, that immunity from vaccination is usually weaker than immunity from disease. One theory is that because the number of chickenpox cases has dropped so dramatically, immunity in adults has also dropped. In other words, when children get sick, they are cared for by their parents. Because of this, disease exposure in adults causes an im-

mune system boost. In short, the parents caring for their sick children got an immune system boost from exposure to their child’s disease. But since childhood chickenpox is now rare, the parents’ immune systems don’t get that boost anymore. Another factor in the rising rates of shingles and HZO is the low rate of adult shingles vaccination. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported in 2016 that only about 33 percent of adults over 50 had been vaccinated with Zostavax. Zostavax was licensed in 2006 for use in adults over 50 (although most insurance plans will not cover it until age 60). Shingrix, a more effective vaccine for shingles, was licensed in 2017 and is approved for adults over 50, although it requires two doses and is usually more expensive than Zostavax. Many primary care providers do not stock either vaccine because they are

so expensive. Patients are given a prescription for the vaccine and sent to a pharmacy. The CDC estimates that each year about one million Americans develop shingles and the rate is rising. In 1945 through 1949, the incidence of shingles was 0.76 cases per 1000 person-years, and from 2000 through 2007 the rate was 3.15 per 1000, a four-fold increase. About 20 percent of persons with shingles will develop HZO. In addition, post-herpetic neuralgia, a painful condition that may follow a shingles infection and can last for years, occurs in 10 to 30 percent of those with HZO as opposed to less than 13 percent of those with shingles in other body areas. TEMPLE BETH-EL HOLDS SHABBAT DINNER By Sharon Gabriel

On Friday evening, December 13, Temple Beth-El of Rockaway Park held their second Shabbat dinner. With more than 80 in attendance including children and grandparents and the new Temple Beth-El rabbi, Matt Carl, the event was a big success.

The evening started in the main Sanctuary with a Shabbat Service where the children participated. From there, everyone was invited to the Social Hall where the children participated in the Blessing over the Challah. A four-course dinner followed along with fresh fruit and pastries at the end. The

dinners have been so successful that they will continue, with the next one in the spring of this year. The dinner was the first time many of the Beth-El members met Rabbi Carl who comes to Beth-El by way of Long Beach, California. Previous to leading the congregation at Beth-El, Rabbi Carl was the rabbi at the East Midwood Jewish Center in Brooklyn. Rabbi Carl, with his

youthful enthusiasm, has many ideas for bringing the younger generation to Temple BethEl with many new and special programs, many of which will begin in the spring as soon as the weather warms up. Well, it’s that time of year— back to school—again! With the holiday season ending, the Peninsula and Seaside branches of Queens Public Library are eager to help students get back in the swing of things and assist them in their learning. To kick off the new year, both libraries are offering new programs that don’t just involve the children, but some involve the whole family as well. According to Associate Director of Peninsula Queens Public Library, Matthew Allison, these newly-implemented programs are incredibly important because they are “community based.” In such a small, tight-knit community, Allison and the Peninsula staff feel it is important to create an environment where children and teens can come with their families and not only learn but be given a chance to interact with their peers.

Programs vary for children of all ages. At the Seaside Library (116-15 Rockaway Beach Blvd.), every Wednesday and Friday at 10:30 a.m., parents and caregivers are encouraged to bring their babies and toddlers to “Babies ‘n’ Books” and “Toddler Story Time.” During this program, Associate Director and Children’s Librarian Jaika Williamson organizes various activities for families, such as story time, finger-painting, and music sessions. As for the Peninsula Library (92-25 Rockaway Beach Blvd.), Head Children’s Librarian Sarah Hennig expressed her excitement about the library’s addition of the Early Childhood Space. “Socializing,” and “bonding,” were the terms Hennig exclaimed repeatedly as just two of her primary goals for this space. STACKS is a free enrichment program that allows a safe and nurturing environment for children to receive the help they need by qualified STACKS' teachers. Following Allisonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s idea of community-based programs and taking note of teensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; interests, Dondero is hosting an Anime Anthropologist event on January 15 at 3:30 p.m. This anime program will incorporate specific creatures from Japanese anime, such as PokĂŠmon, and relate it to real life. Dondero hopes for a great turnout and encourages all high school teens interested to join in the event. The Peninsula and Seaside Queens Public Libraries are continuously trying to create new programs for students of all ages, in order to establish a fun and safe environment for them to learn. With some programs even involving parents alongside their children, these libraries have established a place for families throughout the community to bond and get to know one another, making them excellent learning environments for children of all ages. A Hero Remembered Dear Editor: On December 23, we lost another Rockaway hero. Those who knew him, knew him. Those who didn’t, will never know. His braveness on the night of Superstorm Sandy, for he walked around like everything was dandy. I met Mike on the Q35 bus after the devastation, still in disbelief of what I went through. For months, I never knew that I was talking to a hero. A man who loved life. He never said much about his battles, his strive. I learned through time what he did that night. I learned through time his sufferings, his pain. Together, Mike McDonnell and Dylan Smith, our other Rockaway hero, saved their neighbors when raging fires succumbed their houses, one by one. With a makeshift rope and a surfboard, a link between these two people forever. Dylan lost his life two months after Sandy, while surfing in Puerto Rico. Exactly seven years to the day our young local hero handed Mike the rope and pulled him to peace. Mike never gave up hope. I saw him only a few days before he passed and he said he is still fighting, it’s not over, For Dylan Smith and Michael McDonnell, their journey on Earth came to an end. Always remember our dear friends. As we ring in the New Year of 2020, let us pray for peace on Earth, good will towards all. When someone is in need of help, please answer the call as they did. Rest in Peace, Mike and Dylan, and all of our own fam-

There must be a huge public outcry from the public, local businesses, every elected official and every affected institution. A lawsuit alleging discrimination against the disabled is also necessary to prevent elimination of more than half the Queens bus stops. Crossed Cables Dear Editor: Regarding your entry in last week's column: "This Week in History." I believe the first commercial trans-Atlantic cable came ashore here in Rockaway. There were previous cables between Canada and England, but the Rockaway cable was the first commercial one. My father pointed this out to me when a big storm (I think it was Hurricane Donna) eroded the beach so much that the cable was exposed at 85th Street in front of the Parks Department building. Soldiers or Coast Guard personnel (I don't remember which) were called in to protect it. I quote from "The Rockaways" by Emil Lucev, Sr.: "Western Union transatlantic cables came ashore in Hammels, and the old Commercial Cable Company under-ocean cables landed in Far Rockaway." I believe the terminus was the Bell Telephone building at 85th and RBB. A trade periodical of the time, "Telephone and Telephone Age," also gives mention to this cable in its 5/16/1917 issue that : "Guardsmen are now protecting the cable stations of the Commercial Cable Company and of the Western Union Telegraph Company at Rockaway Beach, LI." It would seem that Rockaway has more than its share of history. Shaun Reen

EARTHQUAKE! LIVE REPORT FROM RINCÓN By John Sica

It was before 5 a.m. and I was lying awake in bed as I usually am at that time. The air stopped blowing on the air conditioner which made me look up at it. Then the light on the digital read out went off. Damn, I instantly thought a power outage. It happens regularly in Puerto Rico, but in my section of Rincón, it rarely happens. Amazing how the brain works, I clearly remember all of those thoughts in the second before the event. Now in total darkness, the bed starting shaking. A loud rumble, you could tell the walls and floor were shaking. I slapped my wife, Rita’s thigh and screamed, “Earthquake!” We jumped out of bed and ran to the living room door to exit the house. I screamed up to my guests, “Earthquake!” My sister, Pat, came running down. My buddy, Tony, didn’t. He was out partying late so we decided to leave him alone. Outside, I stood in my underwear. It didn’t matter, Puerto Rico was in total darkness. Neighbors were all coming out of their houses talking in Spanish that I don’t understand. Some got in their cars to head to higher ground in fear of a tsunami. Our town has a tsunami warning system, but who knows if it works? Does it need electricity? Dogs were howling. I noticed the stars and thought to myself how beautiful the night sky was. It wasn’t until later when I thought about it, that without the town's lights, I could see more stars than ever. My neighbor shouted over the fence to see if we were all right. We waited 20 minutes and went back in the house. My sister, Pat’s husband, Vito, was due to land at 4:30. She was worried about him when he finally called. He said they had just landed and the plane was stopped, waiting to unload when it started shaking like a boat in turbulent seas. He looked at the stewardess who said she had never experienced anything like it. Was it the engines doing something? He got to the car rental which was closed due to lack of power. I decided to drive to the airport and get him. I figured it would be best to drive before the panic set in and the streets were chaos. I knew it would

be dark and no traffic lights, but the roads would be empty. My car has been overheating lately so I took my buddy’s car who slept through the whole thing. My sister took the ride with me. We passed cars idling on the side of the road on high ground, I guess fearing the tsunami. My house is 100 yards from the ocean with nothing in front of it, but I trusted the silent warning system. I’m an eternal optimist. I noticed my buddy has less than a quarter of a tank in the car, so I was lucky to find a gas station that was open using a generator for power. There was a short line for gas, but it was worth the wait. I also brought a bag of ice which I know is in short supply during power outages like the one after Hurricane Maria devasted the island two years ago. Our refrigerator would slowly become useless if this went on for an extended period. We gassed up and started back towards the airport when my sister got a call from her husband that the car rental guy was going to drive him somewhere to get him a car. We headed home and I went back to bed. But not for long. I was in bed for thirty minutes and it started all over again. The bed, the walls, the dogs, etc. I shook my wife and headed out again. Tony kept sleeping. My sister and her husband weren’t around. There was an earthquake the night before, apparently not as bad as this one and I slept through it. I got texts throughout the day of people asking if I was okay. Since I slept through it, it was no big deal. I remembered after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and Mississippi, it was big news for a few days, but life

went on everywhere else and you forget about it. Then when we lived through Super Storm Sandy, it affected our lives for years to come. I thought back to Katrina during those first weeks and months after the storm. Anyway, with the earthquake that I had slept through on Monday morning, we discussed during the day about the tsunami warning system and my wife downloaded an app that alarms you when there is an earthquake in your area and also a tsunami warning. Another useless app on your phone I thought.

Tuesday morning, the phone was going off every 10 minutes, warning us of smaller earthquakes in our area. There were over 30 at last count, most between 4 and 5 on the Richter scale. The big ones we felt this morning were over 6.5. Pat and Vito went for a ride to get supplies, but 98% of the stores were closed. The supermarket had a giant line of people standing outside and they were letting in two people at a time. Lines for gasoline are blocks long, like when Jimmy Carter was president. I am writing this on Tuesday morning, January 7, six hours after the last big earthquake and am planning on going to the beach. It is 85 degrees and sunny. There are no businesses open and no power. By the time this gets printed, I hope I will have power and be able to read it on my computer lugged into the wall. But anything can happen. (The Rockaway Times received this via text message from John Sica. As we went to press, last we heard was that Tony was still sleeping).

Beach 119th Takes the Plunge

As the tradition goes, Rockaway rang in the New Year with a dip in the chilly Atlantic. Beach 119th is one of the big ones, with a parade leading down the block to the beach before more than 100 neighbors jump in together. With the air temperature in the high ‘30s and the ocean not much warmer, in the high 40s, this year’s plunge was a cold one, but it didn’t stop everyone from braving the chill to have a good time.

Life With Our “Artistic” Child Oh Autism! How I Both Love and Hate You New Year’s Eve was the first time I actually felt physically and emotionally hurt by my daughter’s autism. On that eventful afternoon, she and I met with her daughter’s dad in Manhattan to go shopping for a dress for her. The commute in was seamless. We caught the Q53 bus in Rockaway and then transferred to the QM15 Queens-Manhattan bus in Howard Beach. She loves riding the bus and gave intermittent squeals of delight during our ride into the city. However, folks once we arrived on 34th Street, the trip went haywire. She refused to get off the bus, and after finally getting her up, she jumped on my back, and we almost collided headfirst onto the sidewalk. Thank God for a good Samaritan, who saw what was happening and pushed me back. However, I immediately felt my heart palpitating, cursing myself for choosing New Year’s Eve of all days to take her into Manhattan. There were hundreds of people swarming around, congregating for the ball drop. I held onto her for dear life as I worried about her sprinting away. And for those of you who know my daughter or regularly read this column, you know how strong she is. I felt like an ox being dragged. My stomach started to hurt, and my eyes welled with tears due to the

One of the essential parts of RISE’s Shore Corps program is to make sure students are college ready. We not only teach our students college access by utilizing a curriculum called CARA, but we also take them to visit different colleges and universities as well. The annual Yale Splash event enables our students to start thinking about the possibility of schools and careers that may be of interest to them. This day-long event is a mock version of what an actual college day looks like; therefore, our students had a jam-packed day meeting new people and learning new things. Steps To An Exciting 2020 Dear Enchanted Ones who en- 2020, focused, fun and playful while being productive. Are you joy this column: in? Get 2020 going with clarity, If you're more in, here are ease and joy! So many folks are excited your five steps. Step one: Write about 2020, and if I feel curious, down five words that describe I ask why. And so many folks how you want to feel most days have no idea really why they are in 2020. Then pick three that so excited. So, let's unpack this are your version of rock star, and open up this idea of being amazingness. Step four: Get feeling good, and optimistic. If that feels impossible, get interested in something. It can be a book, an inspirational video from someone you honor, or by creating some art, (not to be shared.) If nothing gets you feeling interested, take a nap and wake up and start over with step three. Step five: Write down your big focus, big vision or something that is a dream that you keep trying to shoo away and it keeps coming back. It can be an event, a show, a focus on health/fitness/wellness/a business, or anything that may have been "too big" in the past. Then write this down, write down all the bells and whistles and details as far as you know it. Do not what is realistic. And don't get stuck in

Page 41 the how. This is not the time. Write as if you can create the ideal situation with no limitations, really dream and play big here, you don't have to show this to anyone. These ideas and non-realistic ideals shall be written on the back of the game board and the front is a magical path you create to get to your goals/big idea/focus. If you start worrying or getting overwhelmed, stop and get back to number four. Those are your five steps. They are simple and not necessarily easy. The next option is to make a blueprint, a game board so to speak, of what you have created. It's something that you will look at and get inspired with. Far Rockaway Man Indicted in Fatal Shooting A Far Rockaway man that shot and killed another in front of a Deli on December 18, has been indicted for murder. On Tuesday, January 7, new Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that a Queens County grand jury has indicted Michael Hall, 33, of Far Rockaway, for murder in the shooting death of 45-year-old Dion Gumby, a week before Christmas. The defendant is alleged to have shot the victim several times on December 18, 2019, shortly after 6 p.m. in front of a deli at 87-18 Rockaway Beach Blvd. The defendant, Hall, was arraigned Friday on a 6-count indictment charging him with sec-

the welfare of a child. Queens Supreme Court Justice Richard L. Buchter remanded the

defendant when his defense lawyer reserved a bail application for a later date. Justice Buchter ordered the defendant to return to court on April 9, 2020. If convicted, Hall faces up to 25 years to life in prison. According to the charges, shortly after 6 p.m. on December 18, 2019, the defendant was allegedly observed on video surveillance having a brief conversation with Gumby. As the 45-year-old victim walked away, the defendant allegedly drew a handgun, cocked it and fired several times at the victim. The man was struck in his arm, chest and abdomen and died from those injuries. The defendant fired the weapon in front of a

number of people, some of whom were children. Assistant District Attorney Courtney Finnerty of the Homicide Trials Bureau, with the assistance of Kaitlyn M. Gaskin, of the Homicide Investigations Bureau, are prosecuting the case under the supervision of Assistant District Attorneys Brad A. Leventhal, Bureau Chief of the Homicide Trials Bureau, John W. Kosinski, Deputy Bureau Chief, and under the overall supervision of Executive Assistant District Attorney for Major Crimes Daniel A. Saunders. It should be noted that an indictment is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
