Preparing for Joaquin A Cone of Uncertainty has the east coast on its toes. The hurricane season has given the area a break since the wrath of Hurricane Sandy, but that may soon change with Hurricane Joaquin. As of Wednesday afternoon, Joaquin’s projected path was still unclear, but some forecasts suggested it might be heading our way. On Wednesday morning, Tropical Storm Joaquin reached above 75 mph winds as it churned around the Bahamas, making it a Category 1 Hurricane and the third Hurricane of the season. Experts said the storm was expected to strengthen. According to weather. com, the American GFS model showed Joaquin making a northwestward turn slamming it into the Mideast or further north. The European ECMWF model suggested that the storm would head out to sea and wouldn’t make landfall. If the storm heads in our direction,

it could make landfall late in the weekend or early next week. Even if the storm doesn’t make direct landfall, coastal towns may still experience some beach erosion, coastal flooding, inland flooding from heavy rain and stiff winds. With such a possible threat, the Parks Department is taking measures to prepare. “In Rockaway, we will install flood logs, aluminum panels that fit into the openings of the baffle wall at each street end, from Beach 127th Street to Beach 149th Street. We expect this installation to occur on Friday or Saturday, depending on conditions,” a Parks spokesperson said. On Wednesday morning, the Parks Department performed a drill to practice the installation of these flood logs. “The flood logs will essentially close access to the beach in this area. More beaches may close as the forecast is updated,” Parks added. On Thursday, the Parks De-

A Wee Story Ok, it’s not going in the history books and it’s not clean enough for Reader’s Digest but I gotta share a little story. Wait, is Reader’s Digest still published? It’s hard to tell. If you’re in a doctor’s office (waiting and waiting and slowly I turn) you might come across an old Reader’s Digest. Or it might just look old. The little magazine could’ve been sitting there since the 1960s or arrived last week. It never changes. Or if it has, I haven’t noticed. Reader’s Digest was a good place for little stories and quick humor. Now, such things, of course, go online –and in most cases, are never

to be found. It’s kinda like the tree falling in the forest and whether it makes a sound or not. The reason we all know that question is because it really can be debated. So don’t tell me you have the right answer. Of course, the question is so familiar it’s given birth to a lame joke or two: If a man speaks in a forest and there is no woman around, is he still wrong? Anyway, unless things are written down, in some place where people can find them, good little stories become the tree that didn’t make a sound. I’m twisting that

old philosophical question into a pretzel of a metaphor so maybe I just better get to my slightly offcolor true story. In polite western society men stand side by side at public urinals. It’s the way it is. And because that’s the way it is, it’s ok to talk about them in this column, right? Like urinals, this is a public space. More often than not you’re shoulder to shoulder with somebody you’ve never met and are unlikely to ever meet again. There are no Robert’s Rules; no handbook of proper etiquette. Do you exchange pleasantries? How ‘bout them Mets? Or do you stare straight ahead and not say boo? The size of the men’s room has a lot to do with the conversational flow, so to speak. If you’re in a big room with a bank of urinals, like at a stadium, you don’t say anything. You get in; get out. But if you’re in a tiny room with, say, two urinals, it gets a little tricky. There’s only one rule: don’t get too friendly. Really, there’s not much to say but we’re pretty much trained to acknowledge another human that we could literally rub shoulders with. If a guy next to you says, How ‘bout them Mets? It’s no time to tell the guy you like the Yankees or start a discussion. You say one or two words or three – Ya Gotta Believe-- and then zip and leave.

Page 5 Three men I know, one older than the other two, happened to be in a men’s room with three urinals. Because they knew each other the conversation had to be better than How ‘bout them Mets? One guy ---ok, it was my brother ---- decided it was a perfect time for a philosophical debate. What size bill would it have to be for you to fish it out of the urinal? “I think it’d have to be at least a fifty,” one guy says. My brother says it’d have to be a full hundred-dollar bill. The last guy says, “I grew up in the Great Depression, I’d go in for a quarter.” You won’t find that in The Greatest Generation or in Reader’s Digest but now it’s written down, maybe with the chance to live on in history. And hey, if no one responds, I’ll know it didn’t make a sound in the forest.

Rain Or Shine:

Beach 116th Fall Festival Returns By Katie McFadden The beach is closed, the air is brisk and fall is starting to set in, but that doesn’t mean the fun is over. The second annual Beach 116th Street Fall Festival is set for Sunday. From noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, all are welcome to join in for some family fun on Beach 116th Street. There will be plenty to do for all ages at the event, which is sponsored by the Beach 116th Street Partnership. “This is really an opportunity for people to come back to Beach 116th Street again for great shopping in our stores and we’ll be highlighting a lot of local artists as well,” Linda Humphrey, Executive Director of the Beach 116th Street Partnership, said. For those who remember and miss the Rockaway Music and Art Council’s Fall Festival that used to be held in Riis Park, Beach 116th Street’s fall festival aims to bring some of those traditions back. “ Years ago, you could go to Riis Park where they had this fall event highlighting artists, photographers and other crafters and that’s no longer happening. We’re looking to bring in more local art-

ists to this festival. There are a lot of good shops on Beach 116th Street throughout the year and this also serves as an opportunity to showcase some of the artists that may not have storefronts,” Humphrey said. The event will also showcase some who share their art through

music. “We have local bands coming and a huge sound system and a great stage,” Humphrey said. Among those bands are local favorite Solshyne, which often covers Grateful Dead and other rock tunes. Newcomer Chelsea Soto will sing reggae with her band Side 7. There will also be various jazz musicians. Kids will get to enjoy things like a rock climbing wall and bouncy castles. The FDNY will also be on hand with their fire education trailer to teach people about the

The Rockaway Times importance of fire safety. For the older kids, or those 21 and over, there will be a beer garden in the parking lot of Station Liquors. If you get hungry, feel free to dine at any of the restaurants on the block, or try out some of the other food vendors that will have set ups, including Goody’s BBQ, Cuisine By Claudette, Ciro’s Bakery and more. In the spirit of fall, there will be a pumpkin patch area that will feature a mural painted by artist Geoff Rawling, which families will be able to put their face in and take fun, festive photos. “People should come out on Sunday because it’s a local Rockaway event and there’s plenty of fun to be had and great music to be heard and everyone can see what else is going on on Beach 116th Street. We have these amazing local merchants here year round. Come revisit the block and have a fun day with the family,” Humphrey said. The festival will take place between Newport Avenue and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Parking will be available on the beach block of Beach 116th and surrounding blocks. As we go to press, the weather forecast for Sunday calls for rain, but Humphrey says the event will go on rain or shine. “Hopefully the weather cooperates and Rockaway can come out for this seasonal fall festival,” she said.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2015 the place taking over the indoor space at Bay 9. An Oktoberfest is scheduled for October 10-11th. ***** It’s that time of year to start thinking about next year. High Schools are holding open houses for parents and eighth graders. Please see pages 34-38 for school info and open house dates.

As we went to press a “cone of uncertainty” surrounded the path of Hurricane Joaquin. Please check your flashlights, generators, and water supplies. And have a plan. ***** Keep an eye out for a new documentary: Everything Is Different Now: Rockaway After the Storm. The film, by Jennifer Callahan who produced the outstanding The Bungalows of Rockaway documents the first summer and fall after the storm. In late October, the documentary will debut on THIRTEEN/WNET and WLIW/ Channel 21. ***** The Graybeards are holding their annual blood drive on Sunday, October 4 at St. Francis de Sales on Beach 129th Street. Stop by and donate between 7:30 am and 1:30 pm. ***** And now we pause for a word for our sponsors. We love the compliments but the very best way you can help The Rockaway Times is by letting our

advertisers know you saw their ad. When you call them or pay at the register just let them know you saw their ad. They’ll keep advertising and you’ll keep enjoying the Rockaway Times. Thanks! ***** The holidays will be here before you know it. So maybe it’s time for a fall fix it. Pages 10-13 have helpful hints articles and our advertisers offer what you’ll need! ***** Great Caesar’s Ghost! What kind of newspaper would we be if we didn’t mention the passing of Jack Larson last week. Larson played cub reporter, Jimmy Olson, in the iconic Superman TV series. ***** Who says Rockaway is just a summer place? After a successful summer season, the folks who brought you Riis Park Beach Bazaar, will partner with Wildfeast, one of their vendors, to open an off-season seafood bar-restaurant. Riis Point will be the name of

***** Rick Horan, aka Citizen Rick, writes the column Ideas for Smarter Transportation. It’s an important column because transportation is such a vexing challenge for Rockaway. This week, he takes the Department of Transportation (DOT) to task. He submitted questions to DOT and got back such nonsensical answers that you’re left knowing there’s no hope! ***** Speaking of columns in the Rockaway Times, one might be on its way to oblivion or at least a name change. Bruce Bernfeld started writing Diary of a Fat Man a few months ago and has since lost 50 pounds! ***** One of our favorite reporters, Katie Honan of DNAinfo, reports that the refurbished hockey rink at Beach 108th street has a blue surface to fake out the seagulls. Seagulls like to drop shells on hard surfaces so they can get at the food inside. The blue surface looks like the nearby ocean so the birds look for other surfaces.

***** The car shuffle is over. Parking restrictions have ended for the season. ***** FROM THE MTA: The Brooklynbound (north) side of the Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge will be closed to traffic during overnight hours from Monday night through Friday morning, Oct. 1-8 to allow for setting of the steel on the new Rockaway Point Boulevard overpass. All north-bound traffic will be detoured to the Cross Island Veterans Memorial Bridge between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. nightly with the exception of the Q35 bus, which will continue to operate along its normal route. ***** Facebook can be extremely annoying so for you people not on it, you’re not missing much. This week a hoax made the rounds: “Now it’s official! It has been published in the media. Facebook has just released the entry price: $5.99 to keep the subscription of your status to be set to ‘private.’” Many, many people posted it, presumably for the benefit of all their friends. It wasn’t true. Another mass of people posted jokes or riffs on the scam. It all got very tiresome. By the way, Bill Gates will not pay you $24,000 to forward an email. ***** Last we heard: The 116th Street Fall Fest is Sunday: rain or shine!

Building Back Rockaway Using Nature As A Guide By Dylan Watton

As a young man, Walter Meyer found himself in the middle of the ocean. Not by chance, of course—along with five adults and ten cousins, Meyer traversed the seas in a Jules Verne-esque journey from South Florida to Portugal, sailing in a boat hand built by his father and his uncles. For days, he was surrounded by a cerulean paradise, miles and miles of open ocean. On the tenth day, they reached what Meyer called “…the doldrums of the Atlantic. There’s no wind, and anything that floats just ends up right in the center of the ocean.” In this case, what was floating was a pile of garbage the size of Rhode Island, by Meyer’s estimation. “All the mistakes of man in one space,” he described it as. “It was heartbreaking and stuck with me.” Meyer’s deep connection to the coast, his travel experiences, and his family background have all lead to his current place in life as an urban designer at Local Office Landscape Architecture (LOLA), which he founded in 2006 with Harvard classmate Jennifer Bolstad. Meyer comes from a multigenerational tree-farming family and counts noted Boston architect

Maurice Childs as a family member as well. After working at various architecture firms, he sought to fuse his interests in urban design with his love for the environment. “We [he and Jennifer] work together to deliver ecological urbanism, integrating nature with neighborhoods,” he said. “Nature has these rules that if you don’t follow them you end up rebuilding. We build safer by learning from nature.”

Meyer’s work in Rockaway has been threefold. In addition to his work at his LOLA, Meyer teaches at the Parson’s New School for Design and has frequently taken his classes to Rockaway for various projects. “You can’t teach students about coastal resiliency in New York City unless you’re talking about Rockaway,” he said. His professional work in Rockaway is directly centered on this idea of coastal resiliency, highlighted by

LOLA’s efforts in designing a pilot project called the Double Dune Forest and the proposed Rockaway East Resiliency Preserve (RERP). The former project utilized computer designs to create “a system of vegetated dunes, oriented to dissipate wave energy and protect the beach blocks from storm damage,” according to LOLA’s website. How to Conduct a DIY Home Energy Audit This fall, why not consider making needed improvements in your home to help increase energy efficiency and save big in the long run? Here is a short checklist for a DIY home energy audit. Seal Air Leaks According to the U.S. Department of Energy, sealing air leaks around the house can save up to 30 percent of energy costs annually. To find leaks, conduct a thorough visual inspection for gaps and cracks by baseboards, where the walls and ceiling meet, around door frames, and near cable and phone line wall plates. Spot a gap? Caulk it. Use painter’s tape for a cleaner job. Hold the caulking gun at an angle for best results, and apply in a continuous stream. Improve insulation around windows and doors with weatherstripping. Measure the gap you need to fill to identify the width of weather-stripping needed and determine whether you should apply it from the inside or outside.

Before starting, read the package instructions to ensure you’re using the right materials. Cut to size and install. Lastly, check if your fireplace flue is open. If so, close it when not in use for additional savings. Make Smart Upgrades One quick way to check your windows for inefficiencies is to look for condensation, frost and other moisture. The Department of Energy also recommends closing your windows on a dollar bill. If you can easily pull the bill out, the window might be losing substantial energy and may require repair or replacement. Additionally, ENERGY STAR reports that homeowners who choose windows that have earned the ENERGY STAR save an average $101$538 a year when replacing singlepane windows. If it’s time for an upgrade, look for ENERGY STAR qualified windows that offer innovative technologies and improve energy efficiency. Exterior remodeling companies

like Window World, an ENERGY STAR partner, offer more highperformance options featuring technologies like a Warm-Edge Spacer System, which blocks escaping heat between glass layers. Additionally, the company sells windows made with high-performance Low Emissivity Glass, featuring a microscopic silver coating that actively blocks heat gain during the summer and heat loss during the winter. To further improve efficiency, Window World’s replacement windows also contain argon gas between their glass layers. Because Argon is denser than air, it acts as an ideal insulator. Change Behavior

Page 11 Do an audit of not only your home’s features, but of the occupants as well. Are lights left on in empty rooms? Is the television on when no one is watching it? From switching to cold water laundry cycles to taking advantage of sunlight for warmth and light -- modifications of energy and cost-saving resources don’t need to be a sacrifice. To save energy, improve the comfort of your home and do your part to be more environmentally conscientious, conduct a do-ityourself energy audit. You’ll likely discover many areas in your home that should be improved. (StatePoint)

1- Give your laminate countertop a new look. Rust-Oleum Counter Transformation will give that old countertop a new look. For about $200 you can transform the average size countertop and make it look like new again. 2- First impressions. Walking up to your home, the main entrance gives the first impression. A fresh coat of paint on the front door and updating the entrance lighting can drastically improve on first impressions. 3- Kitchen cleanup. Adding some pull out shelves to your kitchen cabinets can drastically improve on your storage and reduces cluttered counter space. 4- Closet organizers. Looking to remove some of that clutter in the bedrooms? Closet organizers will give you more storage with easier access to your things. 5- Re-grout. No matter if it is in the kitchen or bathroom, re-grouting gives tile a fresh look. Changing the grout color can give it a new look as well. 6- Picture perfect. Update photos in the living room or family room, change the way they’re laid out. Change the frames to give the

7- Mirrors. Adding a mirror or two can make any room look a little bigger. Buy inexpensive mirrors and paint the frame to match your wall (or to accent your wall) to give it a personal touch. 8- Half paint. Give a room the appearance of being taller and bigger by painting the walls at half height. This would also give you the opportunity to add color to a room, giving it a new look with half the work of painting the entire room. 9- Chair molding. Adding a molding around the perimeter of a dining room at the height of the top of the chairs will add character to a room while giving it a very different look at minimal cost. 10- Wood accent wall. I’ve noticed a lot of people getting back into the wood look these days. Simply laminate a wall, half or full height, with 1 by 4’s and stain or paint to your liking. This will give a different look to any room. (I will cover this more in next week’s article). Tell me what you would like to read about in future DIYer articles, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail. com

Building Back Rockaway Using Nature As A Guide Continued from page 9

ment project, would stretch from Beaches 32nd and 56th Street and similarly create a dune system designed to protect the development from another Sandy-type disaster. “From 32nd St. to 56th we’d be creating a park from the flatlands and raising it and sinking it strategically, with the goal of creating positive drainage,” Meyer explained. “In Rockaway the ocean side is on higher ground, the bay side is medium, but around Rockaway Beach Boulevard is low. A light sunshower creates ponding there. Our goal would be to drain water away from the street and into the preserve.” Much of Meyer’s research and design has focused on the use of tree roots, particularly pitch pines, and how they help prevent rushing storm water from destroying buildings. “Nature taught us a lot about resiliency after Sandy,” Meyer said. “It’s important those lessons don’t get lost.” Meyer said that he is still waiting on city approval for the Arvene East project, and said that in order to maintain the affordability of the homes it would require a 20 percent subsidy from the government. “Even if the development doesn’t go through,” he added, “the preserve should still be built

for the thousands of Rockaway residents.” Meyer’s third tier of work in Rockaway has been philanthropic. He has worked closely with the Coastal Marine Resource Center, which has participated in cleanups of Rockaway Beach and Jamaica Bay. In April 2013, Meyer and Bolstad received the White House’s “Champions of Change” Award for their work in providing solar power to devastated areas of Rockaway following Hurricane Sandy. Through the CMRC, he helped create Power Rockaways Resilience, which seeks to install solar panels on critical businesses throughout Rockaway. Though he grew up in South Florida and currently lives in Brooklyn, Meyer said that Rockaway is his “spiritual home now.” He frequently comes to the peninsula to surf, and owns a bungalow on Beach 43rd Street that’s still being fixed post-Sandy. He has found a spot in New York City where nature is integral to everyday life. “We have to find 21st century solutions to our problems by bringing together art and design and science. Plenty of people like me looking at these global problems and finding local solutions. It’s only new way to think for a while.”

NOW Delivering To Breezy Point & Broad Channel

By Dylan Watton This past summer saw a reinvention of historic but stagnant Riis Park as the Riis Park Beach Bazaar (RPBB) came in and transformed the area. Throughout the season locals and visitors were treated to gourmet food not typically found on the peninsula, boutiques ranging from sunglasses to artists’ workshops, and a steady dose of live music and DJs. Belvy Klein, one of the owners of RPBB’s forbearer, the Brooklyn Night Bazaar, and the director of RPBB, said that the successful summer took everyone by surprise. “I think the summer exceeded everyone’s expectations by a lot, Klein said. “The National Parks Service told us repeatedly that Riis hadn’t seen numbers like this in 25 years. In July and August the weather was great but I really think the programming and food really attracted people to come here. At first it was a curiosity thing but then people came consistently from the city and from [Rockaway] as well. RPBB was so successful, in fact, that it was extended past its initial Labor Day finish date until the last weekend in September. “During this time I got to thinking, Klein said. “We have these yearlong leases at this awesome, beautiful space—why don’t we give it a shot in the fall and winter too? I ran it by a lot of regulars from Breezy, Neponsit, Belle Harbor, and they were all very responsive to the idea. Working with one of the vendors that was a hit during the summer months, RPBB will be open year round with Wildfeast at Riis and Riis Point, a restaurant/bar collaboration. Wildfeast sources all of their fish and game locally, with all of their vegetables coming from their own one-acre farm on the Peconic Land Trust in North Fork, Long Island. Among the menu items that will be returning from summer are short rib sliders, North Fork lamb, and clam chowder. Riis Point will feature craft cocktails and beers and will have flat screen TVs lining the areas so that patrons can watch football, hockey, and more—that is, if they

get tired of looking at the beach. For Wildfeast at Riis’ opening weekend on October 10 and October 11, the area will turn into a Bavarian bazaar as the new establishment celebrates Oktoberfest. The menu will include German classics such as bratwurst, schnitzel, and hendl (German-style roast chicken), with house-baked jumbo pretzels and charcuterie being served at the bar. Additionally, the bar will have a special beer menu consisting of Oktoberfest favorites such as traditional pilsners and Sam Adams Oktoberfest. It is being billed as “the first and only oceanfront Oktoberfest in New York City. Looking past the Munich munchfest, Klein said that a number of one-off programming events are being planned. “Rockaway is such a dog town, so we’re working on a Halloween dog costume party thing, he said. Among the other activities being discussed are harvest fairs, farmers markets, pumpkin carving around Thanksgiving, and a crab boil. “We’re looking for a lot of different activities that families can come and enjoy, Klein added. While Riis Park does offer magnificent views of the ocean and its famous architecture, it can also be a challenging place for an offseason restaurant due to swirling winds and biting cold. But Klein and his partners are prepared for that challenge. “It’s the Atlantic in the winter, he said matter-of-factly. “We don’t have huge expectations for it right now. But word of mouth has been extremely positive and we have a strong social media presence. He also stressed that the Bay 9 doors do go down while still offering views of the ocean and that the space inside will be heated. Wildfeast at Riis’s initial hours will be 3 p.m.-10 p.m. on Monday, Thursday, and Friday with 10 a.m. brunches on Saturday and Sunday featuring a traditional Irish breakfast. In a change from the summer, parking will be free. “Looking back, this summer has been rad, Klein said. “The next season should be even better.

Scrawl Was A Ball

Praise For Portia

Dear Editor: Thanks again for your support this year. We had a good Scrawl with a lot of great feedback. Everyone had a good time and no one got out of hand (it’s not designed to be a crazy bar crawl). I met one woman from Manhattan, Kitty, who said she had been here every weekend but stuck to only a few places and was really excited that the Scrawl made her aware of so much more in Rockaway and to find out Rockaway was still open throughout the year! That alone made the Scrawl worth it to me. I think one thing I did not emphasize enough about the Scrawl is that it truly is an event created to promote and support local businesses. The businesses offer great deals to reward the locals and regulars while also enticing others to Scrawl around and discover new things. I will be working every year to refine and improve the Scrawl for Rockaway so stay tuned for next year’s new and improved Rockaway Scrawl! Next year we will be simplifying it even more and possibly adding bonus Sunday for the restaurants and bars as well. I am open to any suggestions or critiques anyone has to offer. Our Winners this year (the WOMEN have it!): 1st PLACE: Janine DaSilva; 2nd PLACE: Marni Sugar; 3rd PLACE: Michelle Henrichsen Special shout outs to Tommy Burke and Finbar Devine for a valiant effort! Max Power

Dear Editor: I wanted to give a special thanks to Ms. Portia Dyrenforth the Chief Parks Dept. Administrator in the Rockaways. I had a problem with one of the parks in Rockaway and went to Ms. Dyrenforth asking for help. She not only handled the problem but exceeded what I had asked for. Her willingness to help was so greatly appreciated. It’s so nice to know we have someone of Ms. Dyrenforth’s caliber at the helm of running our parks! Mike Feldman (Letters posted to our website – in response to Ideas For Smarter Transportation)

SBS Slammed Dear Editor: The issue is not really Select Bus (SBS). The Transit Authority has implemented SBS on the major midtown Manhattan crosstown streets without any reserved bus lanes. SBS is simply an excuse to create reserved bus lanes. There is no reason, no evidence, that demonstrates that there is any net benefit to SBS in an area such as Woodhaven Boulevard. The whole purpose of reserved bus lanes is to prevent, or at least decrease driving. Otherwise, what rational person would propose a roadway modification (I can’t call it an improvement) that might possibly help fewer than 30,000 people per day and would significantly inconvenience, if not actually harm, upwards of 100,000 people per day? And, when we are trying to reduce pollution, what rational person would take an action that would increase pollution? Certainly having 64,000 rush hour vehicles spend more time idling in traffic will significantly increase air pollution on Woodhaven Boulevard. In fact, since we know that pollution kills, why haven’t the police arrested the Transportation Commissioner and charged her with attempted murder, because that is certainly the result of deliberate air pollution. And a good project evaluation, as required by federal law, requires evaluation of both the “do nothing” alternative as well as other possibilities — such as QueensRail. Even a cursory look would show that the rail solution is far superior to SBS. Cost estimates for the rail solution range from about $350 million to just under a billion dollars while the chosen SBS solution will cost upwards of a quarter of a billion dollars. A far superior solution that will decrease air pollution, result in a MUCH quicker trip, and only cost about $600,000 million more. The real Queens question is, why was it worth spending $2 billion to extend the #7 line to the far west side for 32,000 commuters but it isn’t worth less than half of that for upwards of 30,000 Queens commuters? Eugene Falik

Real Estate Is Real Reason Dear Editor: The #7 line was not extended to benefit commuters at all. It was extended to increase real estate values so the developers who are all friends of Bloomberg would make a killing and profit more. Nothing is done to help commuters. There is always a hidden agenda. De Blasio’s fixation on getting rid of the

Central Park horse carriages which he is painting as an animal rights issue, has nothing to do with animals. It is payback to his campaign contributors so the real estate the stables occupy can be converted to condos. Don’t believe anything the city tells you. All the proposed SBS benefits are alleged. Nothing has been proven. That’s why DOT and the MTA have refused to answer any questions or share results from their models. Because they have no proof SBS will work. They can only make allegations. We must educate the public. It is irresponsible to route cars and trucks down a narrow residential street, Trotting Course Lane, who residents have no idea what the city is planning or their street. DOT has already created unsafe conditions with their bus lane and the right turn Ito Yellowstone Blvd and unclear and misleading signage where the words “right turns” are in too small a print to be read by vehicles traveling over 10 mph, and some signs merely say buses only, not even mentioning that right turns are permitted from tHe bus lane.. If DOT can’t properly implement a simple bus lane, how can we trust them with SBS on Woodhaven? Allan Rosen

We Need Both (Regarding the new medical facility coming to Beach 105th street) Dear Editor: We need both this new Medical Facility which is on the way and St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. There are many residents to be served when it comes to so many different medical problems and of course emergency’s that people may have. I’m sure and I hope many would agree with me on this especially since this growing Community lost Peninsula Hospital. Danny Ruscillo

OCTOBER BOARDWALK UPDATE With the beach season officially over, the Parks Department has released its October 2015 boardwalk update with information about the next steps and a timeline for completion of the project. The boardwalk is “substantially complete” in both Phases 1 and 2, from Beach 86th to Beach 97th Street and Beach 97th to Beach 107th Streets, respectively; all that remains in those areas are the construction of more access ramps and the remaining planting on the land and beach side of the boardwalk. Both areas will remain open to the public throughout this process. In Phase 3, Beach 108th to Beach 126th Street, water main relocation will commence including some temporary shut downs with the DEP, with pipe and h-pile driving following that. The installation of the chain linked fencing will continue in parallel with the water main relocation. Installation of sand retaining wall panels and boardwalk pile caps will begin, as well. During this process, beach access in this phase will only be at Beach 108th Street and Beach

116th Street. In Phase 4A, removals are a complete and H-pile driving, sand retaining wall installation, pipe pile driving, and pre-cast plank installation are almost all complete. Precast plank installation & grouting will continue, with boardwalk railing installation will commence in October. In Phase 4B, from Beach 73rd to Beach 86th Street and Beach 60th to Beach 73rd Street, boardwalk pipe pile, H-pile driving, and sand retaining wall and boardwalk pile cap installation are substantially complete, with installation of the pre-cast pile caps, sand fill under the boardwalk, electrical and plumbing utilities, and pre-cast plank installation for the new boardwalk continuing. Beach 73rd Street and Beach 86th Street entrances will remain open to the public. In Phase 5, Beach 39th to Beach 60th Street, removal of existing boardwalk, chain link fence installation, and clearing & grubbing will continue. H-pile and pipe pile driving, as well as sand retaining wall panel installation, will begin in October. No beach access will

Between the Bridges in Broad Channel By Peter J. Mahon

Chill or Be Chilled The summer of 2015 is now but a fond memory as the crisp, cool air of autumn envelops our community on the bay. Inevitably, as the temperatures cool down, people turn to food and drink to provide a little warmth and comfort. Fortunately, for all of us here in Broad Channel we don’t have far to travel to find that warmth and comfort because on Saturday, October 10, the Broad Channel VFW will be hosting a Chili Cook-Off and music festival with 10 bands on behalf of New York Families for Autistic Children (NYFAC) between the hours of noon and 10 p.m. I have to admit that I am not a “chili head but several people I have spoken with are adamant in their belief that chili cook-offs have become major events in our area over the past several years and in their own words, “the hotter the better! My limited experience with “hot chili came when our neighbor, Gloria Tubridy (a selfadmitted chili head) from West 11th Road, once served me a bowl of her chili that left me thinking I had placed a hot coal in mouth, pepper and pepper sprayed my eyes while snorting Drano! These days when I see a bowl of chili (hot or otherwise) a little voice goes off in my head saying “Danger Will Robinson, Danger! There’s no obvious biological reason why humans should tolerate painfully hot food, let alone seek it out and enjoy it. After all, healthy, sane humans do not stick their tongues in a lit candle flame and bathe their eyes in lemon juice so I find it difficult to understand why some people love to assault one of the most sensitive organs in the human body, the tongue, with

what amounts to chemical warfare. In any event, whether you are an avid “chili headâ€? or simply someone who enjoys an enjoyable day out, mark your calendar for October 10 and stop by the VFW’s Chili Cook-Off and Music festival. You are guaranteed to have a great time. Something to think about‌ In 476 A.D. Romulus, the last of the Roman emperors in the west, was overthrown by the Germanic leader Odoacer, who became the first Barbarian to rule in Rome. The order that the Roman Empire had brought to Western Europe for 1000 years was no more. The fall of Rome was a culmination of several external and internal factors one of which was unchecked immigration. Illegal immigrants poured unchecked across the Roman borders, Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Franks, Anglos, Saxons, Alemanni, Thuringians, Rugians, Jutes, Burgundians, Lombards, Alans, Vandals as well as African Berbers and Arab raiders. Will and Ariel Durant wrote in Volume 3 of their Story of Civilization ‌ “If Rome had not engulfed so many men of alien blood in so brief a time, if she had passed all these newcomers through her schools instead of her slums, if she had treated them as men with a hundred potential excellences, if she had occasionally closed her gates to let assimilation catch up with infiltration, she might have gained new vitality from the infusion, and might have remained a Roman Rome, the voice and citadel of the West.â€? Two From “Four to the Bar” Reunite for Rare Performance On Sunday, October 4, the Kerry Hills Pub on Rockaway Beach Boulevard at 115th Street will host a reunion performance of two members of Four to the Bar, an influential and wildly popular Irish band from the 1990s. When David Yeates and Patrick Clifford step up to the microphones, it will be the first public collaboration of any of the four band members in almost 20 years. The duo will be accompanied on fiddle by Paul Morrissett of the Grammy Award-winning Klezmatics. From 1991 to 1995, Four to the Bar rose from relative obscurity in Woodside to become one of the premier Irish bands in the five boroughs. The band has been cited as an influence by many of today’s favorite Irish artists, including Shilelagh Law and the Narrowbacks, each of which currently boasts a huge following in Rockaway. The reunion performance was spurred by Yeates’ first visit to New York since returning to Ireland in 1996. “Among my favorite memories of being in Four to the Bar were our performances at the Rockaway Irish Festival,” the lead vocalist says. “The Rockaway community has a spirit and love for the mu-

sic that’s just contagious. And we would always follow our appearance at the festival with a gig at the Kerry Hills, so I was thrilled to hear that Carmel [O’Sullivan, owner of the Kerry Hills] is still in business, keeping the tradition alive.” The show is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Admission is free, but seating is limited and first-come, first-served. About Four to the Bar: Active from 1991 through 1995, Four to

the Bar released two albums, Craic on the Road: Live at Sam Maguire’s, and Another Son; they also opened for Sharon Shannon and served as a backing band for Pete Seeger; and toured from Key West to Chicago, Boston to St. Louis. New York’s Irish Voice newspaper calls Four to the Bar “a well-loved and well-respected quartet,” and calls Craic on the Road an “all-time favorite live recording… of an Irish band.” For more information, visit

FourToTheBar.com About the Kerry Hills Irish Pub: Located at 115-10 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, the Kerry Hills has been operating in Rockaway Park NY for over 25 years. Owner Carmel O’Sullivan was born in County Kerry, Ireland; emigrated to the U.S. in the early 1960s; and has been a Rockaway resident since the early 1990s. Community House Comedy

Top Tier Talent To Bring Laughs To Rockaway

Continued from page 8

of the Community House thanks to event planner Bobby Joseph. “I wanted to do something during the offseason when there’s not a lot going on in Rockaway. I’m a huge fan of comedy and so are my friends and I really wanted to have a show in our backyard that is comparable to what you see in the city. It’s hard for people to travel to the Village or places like Caroline’s or Comedy Cellar during the weekdays, Joseph said. Joseph has followed Normand and List and thought he’d take a chance on them. “They’re my favorite comedians at the moment and they aren’t completely unattainable like Louis C.K., but they’re on their way up there. I still thought it was a shot in the dark to get them. I didn’t think I’d get any response given their current stature, Joseph said. He took a chance anyway and contacted Normand and List through social media and was soon able to set something up through their manager and lock the duo in for a night of laughs at the new gastropub.

There will be $15 general admission to the Community House and anyone who wants to sit and eat or drink outside are encouraged to make reservations. Most tables seat four people or more. “The staff is hoping to start seating people at 7 p.m. so people can sit and order food before the show, so there aren’t too many distractions going on, Joseph advised. While it may be a little chilly in late October, he says the Community House is in the process of installing space heaters. “We’ll make sure everyone is comfortable out there, he said. “This is a rare opportunity to see two really hot, up-and-coming comedians that I think are well on their way up to being the biggest guys in comedy, Joseph said. If all goes well, this won’t be the only chance to see quality comedy locally. “If this one is successful, I have a plug into the NYC comedy scene and I’m hoping to make this a monthly showcase. To reserve a table at the Community House for the evening, call (347) 6199417.

Ideas for

NYC Department of Transportation – Stuck in Reverse By Rick Horan Full disclosure: I hate the Department of Transportation and from what I can tell, I am not alone. DOT is widely considered to be one of the most dysfunctional of all City agencies, but why? What makes us loathe them so much? I sup≠pose it’s because we have to deal with DOT’s incompetence every time we hit the road. Every time we get behind the wheel we are tortured by lowered speed limits, deplorable road surfaces, narrower thoroughfares and unnecessary traffic lights, but what is the reason behind this situation; is it simply gross incompetence or the result of some diabolical socialized transportation policy that seeks to make driving so slow and miserable that we either shoot ourselves in the head, sell our cars or move out of town?

To try and get to the bottom of this mystery we sent eight challenging questions to DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg back in mid-August. After several broken promises, spokesperson Scott Gastel finally sent DOT’s official answers: 1. Why are there still no school signs more than a year after the sewer plant speed camera was installed? DOT – No Response 2. Why doesn’t DOT make traffic studies public? DOT – No Response 3. Why doesn’t DOT make their photo enforcement records public? DOT – No Response 4. Why does DOT continue to remove lanes from Rockaway roads? DOT – No Response 5. Why not use more traffic signal

WERE YOU UNABLE TO APPLY FOR THE

2012 SUPER STORM SANDY DISASTER

actuators instead of timers at appropriate intersections? DOT – No Response 6. Is anyone at DOT responsible for helping motorists get from point A to point B faster? DOT – No Response 7. Why are the roads in such horrible shape? DOT – No Response 8. What is your agency currently doing to improve transportation to the Rockaways? DOT’s response… *Ongoing post-Sandy recovery work such as replacement of the traffic signals and street lighting, road resurfacing, sewer work and bulkhead repairs. RH: Why not install more modern traffic signals that will help move traffic faster instead of the same old timed lights? *Select Bus Service for Woodhaven and Cross Bay Boulevards, highlighting safety improvements along the corridor and improving bus speeds for riders by 25-35 percent. RH: What about the negative effect on motorist’s drive time due to the loss of lanes and reduced speed limits? *Expanding Jamaica Bay Greenway

The Rockaway Times RH: Good to hear but no details or time frames provided. *Safety Improvements and a Capital reconstruction on Rockaway Beach Boulevard, from Beach 73rd to Beach 88th Streets. RH: This is DOT speak for removing yet more valuable lanes. *Ongoing discussions about safety and better street design needs in commercial corridors, transit and school areas, such as Downtown Far Rockaway. RH: C’mon we don’t need more meetings about how to improve transportation in Rockaway, we need more lanes and fewer traffic lights. It’s not rocket science. Unfortunately history has proven that DOT is either unwilling or unable to accomplish this simple goal. Perhaps I’m stating the obvious here but I think it’s time for a new Mayor and DOT Commissioner. Note: Ironically letters to Polly Trottenberg, Scott Gastel and other DOT managers regarding the press office’s non-responsiveness remain unanswered. Next week: My top 10 reasons for hating the DOT. SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM BECAUSE OF A DISABILITY? NOW YOU CAN! In 2012, NYC operated a one-time food assistance benefit program for residents impacted by Super Storm Sandy called the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP). NYC is re-running the program from October 3 through 25, 2015 for those who qualified but could not apply in 2012 due to a disability.

Can I apply? AND did not receive regular SNAP benefits between October 27, 2012 and November 25, 2012

Scholars’ Academy’s PSAL girls soccer team is off to a scintillating start to their season! In their first season in the B division, the Lady Seawolves are 5-0 so far, defeating their opponents by a combined score of 29-2 with one forfeit. Among the team leaders are Erin McDermott with nine goals, Jessica Buckley with eight goals and five assists, Kelsey Flynn with four goals and five assists, Aleksandra Neckahuptysiows with two goals and seven assists, and goalkeeper Kalyn Marrero, who

has allowed just two goals on the season. “The team has great chemistry and tremendous talent,” Coach Melissa Pascarella said. “This team could undoubtedly take it all the way.” The team’s next game is this Thursday, October 1, against Queens High School Complex in Flushing, with their next home game at Fort Tilden taking place on October 8 against the Academy of American Studies. Diary Of A Fat Man: Food Tunes Those of you who know me, know that I am obsessed with music. I must go to more than 40 concerts a year and my tastes run the gamut from Bob Dylan to Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Phish and The Dead..... so let’s have some fun this week and check out some lyrics from songs that have something to do with my journey. If you want to sing along I created a YouTube playlist of these songs: y o u t u b e . c o m / p l a y l i s t ? l i s t = P L j X o P M 8 Id V _ K2PvI9qpIQplV0fYRlvHnD ........... First up is a little ditty by They Might Be Giants called... Dinner Bell. I don’t want a pizza, I don’t want a piece of peanut brittle. I don’t want a pear. I don’t want a bagel. I don’t want a bean. I wouldn’t like a bag of beef or a beer or a cup of chowder, corn, cake, or creamed cauliflower. Cuz I’m waiting for the dinner bell to do the bell thing. Dinner bell dinner bell ring. I’m sure you all know The Beatles famous song about candy: Savoy Truffle. Creme tangerine and montelimat. A ginger sling with a pineapple heart. A coffee dessert, yes, you know it’s good news, But you’ll have to have them all pulled out After the Savoy truffle. Cool cherry cream and a nice apple tart. I feel your taste all the time we’re apart. Coconut fudge really blows down those blues, But you’ll have to have them all pulled out After the Savoy truffle. And of course... The Fat Boyz and their big hit: All You Can Eat $3.99 for all you can eat? Well, I’m a stuff my face to a funki beat!

We’re gonna walk inside, and guess what’s up: Put some food in my plate, and some Coke in my cup. Give me some chicken, franks, and fries And you can pass me a lettuce. I’m a pass it by. So keep shoveling, (Ha!) onto my plate. Give me some sweets and lots of cake. Give me some hot Macaroni and Cheese! Give me, some more food PLEASE!!!! Give me some bologna, salami, and ham. Toast with butter and strawberry jam. I love it whether the food is cold or hot. Put a burger on the plate, and it’ll hit the spot. We’ll eat everything. An incredible feat $3.99 for all you can eat! I can’t leave you folks with all this gluttony on your minds, so...do not fret. I found a song that really sings the praises of healthy living by Ben Sands of the famous Sands family of folk singers from Newry, County Down, Ireland: BACK ON THE DIET ON MONDAY I’m going back on the diet on Monday, No more French Fries, chocolate or gin; Right after midnight on Sunday, It’s back on the diet, I’ve just got to try it, It’s back on the diet again. Last week I went to the doctor - in with a pain in my toe, He looked at me over his glasses then spoke in a voice grave and low; Just step up on the scales there, dear me just as I feared - If you don’t lose some pounds you won’t still be around by the time next Christmas is here. Going next day to a party, thought I’d try on some new gear; selected the usual sizes but the problem was soon very clear; In spite of straining and stretching, buttons flew off left and right; I couldn’t fit in a thing as the zippers went ping and even the tie was too tight. Sat-

Preparing for Joaquin Continued from page 3

partment began filling gaps in the dunes. “We will fill four cuts in the berm (at Beach 44th, 86th, 97th, and 106th Streets) beginning Thursday. Sand was displaced from these entrances during beach season, with approval from the USACE, to ensure access for beach goers in these areas,” Parks said. On Wednesday afternoon, the city released an alert, saying “New York City Emergency Management is continuing to monitor Hurricane Joaquin. The City is holding multiple daily calls with the National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center. The City is actively engaged with partner agencies at all levels of government and the private sector in preparation should the storm arrive. The City encourages the public and visitors to stay informed by signing up for Notify NYC, the City’s official source for emergency informa-

tion, and identify their hurricane evacuation zone by visiting http:// gis.nyc.gov/oem/he/index.html or calling 311. NYC Emergency Management continues to monitor the hurricane and keep the public updated as it develops.” With the impact of Hurricane Joaquin still undetermined, be sure to pay close attention to weather alerts and the forecast, and be prepared just in case. Make sure you have supplies like batteries, flashlights, blankets, nonperishable food and bottled water. Charge your cell phones and electronic devices. Have cash available. Fill up your car’s fuel tank. Bring in any unsecured objects or furniture from outside. Have a list of emergency phone numbers. Discuss a safety and possible evacuation plan with your family. In the event of an evacuation, the nearest evacuation center is John Adams High School in South Ozone Park.

urday night to the Tavern, just for a whisky or three, came back home around midnight, found I’d forgotten my key; Tried to get in through the window - got myself stuck half-way in: Hind-quarters out with hailstones about, shoulders and head in the bin. So farewell fry in the morning, so long whiskey and beer, bye-bye battered cod and chips - your days are numbered I fear; Hello bran and cornflakes, cottage cheese and black tay, Fruit by the bagful, nuts by the mouthful, tomatoes and lettuce pray.

Waking up to life each day with a positive attitude is not always so easy. We all know life has its ups and downs. It is rare you meet a person who has not struggled with loss, sadness, or unhappiness. We are human and this is life. Of course, we have choices and how we respond to these difficult times will make all the difference. Recently, I went to a yoga teachers’ workshop with Jennifer Brilliant from Park Slope. If you ever get a chance to meet this amazing teacher you would no doubt fall in love with her energy and knowledge. She speaks from the heart and is a pure delight. Her discussion was based on what inspires you to teach. How can you keep your teaching fresh and yourself motivated? Jennifer totally inspired me to continue teaching from the heart, be authentic and don’t be afraid to try new things. Every day is a brand new day and there is always something that inspires my teaching at Ocean Bliss Yoga. This week Pope Francis was my greatest inspiration. He brought great joy and spirit to New York. What a gift to have the presence of his grace in this lifetime. His message is strong and clear. Pope Francis is not a man who fears others. He is totally a people person and I am grateful to learn from his teachings. All week I read a poem from St. Francis of Assisi in honor of Pope Francis’s presence. He inspires me to do good for others. Be humble and drop the ego. What an amazing role model for New Yorkers.

One of my students announced she was going to Madison Square Garden and will bring back a full report on her experience. It doesn’t get better than this for New York. May he bring peace to all of us. Take a deep breath in and let it out. This could be the last time in my lifetime that a Pope comes to New York. My inspiration to teach comes from God and all that he has created on the earth. I love the water, it speaks to me and I find such peace in my soul when I am near it. Teaching at Ocean Bliss Yoga overlooking Jamaica Bay is no doubt a gift from God. Our space is really special and I am thankful to my dance studio owner, Elaine Freeburg, she is a woman of integrity and generosity. Without Elaine I never would have been able to teach yoga in the Rockaways. So grateful and blessed to have this opportunity to teach from the heart. I am inspired by all the students and their transformations. This practice of yoga is life changing and we will always have this in our life. Each and every one of my teachers inspires me. I learn from everyone. Thank you Denise Lee, Diana Treglia, Ann Buckley Reen, Valerie Nichols, Christine Cruz, Carla Strangenberg, Ramit Kreitner, Anita Ruderman, Christine Walker, Paulette Mancuso, Sarah Arikian, Cecilia Rudden, Lisa Fernandez, Lori Dinneny, Bridget Scala, Sally Kempton and Jennifer Brilliant. It is truly an honor and pleasure to teach in the Rockaways. Thank you to all who have made it possible for me to live my dream.

Re Recreational Beach Access – A joint proposal from the Dunes at Arverne by the Sea (Beach 62nd – Beach 67th Streets) and Water’s Edge Condominiums at Arverne (Beach 59th – Beach 62nd Streets). Goal To provide recreational access to the ocean within the western portion of the Arverne Urban Renewal Area. Background A significant portion of the shoreline between Beach 60th Street and Beach 73rd Street is currently undesignated, with the exception of a designated surfing beach between Beach 67th and Beach 69th Streets. There are currently no lifeguarded beaches open for recreational swimming between Beach 60th Street and Beach 73rd Street, which encompasses five bay areas. The following proposal is an inclusive compromise to accommodate recreational swimming and recreational surfing interests, and reflects the majority opinion of residents at Water’s Edge and The Dunes at ABTS. We are asking for a letter of support for this proposal from Community Board 14 to be sent to the Parks Department. Notes Bay 1 (58th - 60th Street) and Bay 7 (73rd - 77th Street) are currently lifeguarded/open beaches and would remain unchanged.

By Katie McFadden Today’s Assignment: Play in the Sand. On Tuesday, September 15, 10 Masters students from Walter Meyer and Jennifer Bolstad’s Design Studio class at Parsons The New School, were told to do just that as part of a topology workshop. This semester, Meyer and Bolstad’s architecture students are working on simulated projects related to the upcoming Arverne East development project. “The studio process is intended as a condensed simulation of professional collaboration on a largescale urban intervention,” Meyer said. The students have to analyze the site, come up with a master plan, and garner real input and critique from interested parties such as local residents and leaders, as well as city agencies and developers of the Arverne East project. One of the first assignments of the new semester included a trip to the Arverne East site, followed by a topology workshop on the beach, in which students put their architectural models, featuring dunes and other protective measures, to the test against the seaside elements in a simulated experiment. “Each student will design an urban block, including a minimum of 12 buildings, and a protective sand topology for dissipating, scattering, and redirecting wave energy,” the assignment read. The students gathered near the shore and had an hour to build their designs in a 10x10 space, while recording the process by video camera, to show how their designs stood up to the waves as the tide came in. “After the project, they’ll present what they learned, like which shapes and dunes lasted longest. All of the lessons learned show a mini version of what it’s like to live on the coast,” Meyer said. “This project is a primer for their plans for the Arverne East site.” The project, called “Beauty & Brawn,” judged the students on

just that. Those with the most aesthetically pleasing project got points for beauty, while those whose projects lasted the longest against the tide, got credit for “brawn.” The beauty portion was critiqued by curious beachgoers who happened to stumble upon the project and some who were invited to watch the process. Each student’s design was vastly unique. The winner of the “brawn” was student Jack Dinning, as his model was the last one standing. “There was a tie for the ‘Beauty’, the beach going judges were torn between the fractal elegance of Jillian Blakely’s sculpture, and the multi-scalar dunes and swales designed by Simon Shulz,” Meyer said. “A close runner up to Jillian and Simon was Eric Romeo whose design redirected wave energy in one direction, and bent the backwash in another. Interestingly, Jillian almost beat Jack, nearly sweeping both Beauty and Brawn.” One of those on hand to critique the work was Dan Falt of the Army Corps of Engineers who “noted how Jack’s movement of the highest volume of sand was a factor in his win.” The other students who participated in the project included Abraham Chandler, Pedro Sandi Dal Molin, Pam Anantrungroj, Hayley Reiter, Dani Al-Edani and Berna Yilmaz. Meyer’s students come from all different backgrounds, both culturally and educationally. He has students from Thailand, Brazil, Turkey and Iraq and some come from architecture backgrounds, others from social sciences and another who previously studied biology. The sand topology workshop was a way for the students to “build something for the community and interact with them in an informal way,” Meyer said. As the semester goes on and the students develop their simulated master plans for Arverne East, they’ll meet with community groups and various agencies formally.

Raising Cancer Awareness Through a Positive Outlet By Katie McFadden

September was Childhood Cancer Awareness month. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Every day, millions across the globe are affected by cancers, whether within themselves or a loved one. This fall, a Far Rockaway softball league is raising awareness and creating a supportive outlet for women who may be impacted by the disease in some way. The “All Women Rock” Cancer Awareness Softball League started last weekend and is empowering women and those who may be dealing with cancers in their lives. The cancer league is a new extension of the Stop the Violence Softball League, which played over the spring and summer in Far Rockaway. The season may have ended, but some from the women’s league weren’t quite ready for it to be over. Lakia Echols, Taiesha Crump, and some of the other ladies from the league decided to keep it going, but are putting focus on another important cause. “I know a lot of ladies who have gone through cancer. This league helps with women empowerment. A lot of these women were part of the summer Stop the Violence Softball League and they needed something to keep them busy and out of the

house,” Crump, a two-time cancer survivor herself, said. “Taiesha said she wanted to start up a new league, so I said, you want to do something? You’re a cancer survivor, let’s do cancer awareness,” Echols said. So, four teams were formed, each representing a different cancer or disease that hits close to home for some of the players. “The captains of each team are people who are going through or dealing with someone who has the disease they represent,” Echols said. The teams have ordered jerseys the color of the awareness ribbons that represent each illness. The teams include Breast Cancer, which will wear pink jerseys, Children’s Cancer, which will wear gold, Lupus, which will wear purple and Ovarian Cancer, which will wear teal.

Each team has about ten women of all ages, but more are encouraged to join. Cancer hits close to home for several members. “We have a lot of ladies who are taking care of family members who are sick. Miriam is taking care of her mother. Charlene has a father going through cancer. We have three ladies that have had scares and a couple who had cancer and have been in remission. We have one lady who is taking care of her son, Jacob, who has been fighting Stage 4 cancer for over a year. She still gets up and comes out and dedicates herself every Sunday and plays in these games,” Crump said. The league holds special meaning to Crump. In 2009 she was diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas. She went

into remission for the cancer in 2009, but in 2013, she was diagnosed with a second cancer, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which she also beat. “I’ve been cancer free for nearly three years,” Crump said. She has had some motivation to help her through her illnesses. “I keep fighting because after the first diagnosis, I was blessed with my son. I had him after my surgery and he’s been healthy since day one. He’s my savior. I don’t know where I’d be without him. He keeps me going and reminds me that there’s another day that I have something to live for,” she said. In 2012, her son’s father passed away, leaving Crump as a single mother. After dealing with four months of radiation in her neck for her second cancer, Crump found another motivator to continue. The Stop the Violence Softball League formed in 2013 and Crump started playing with the men’s teams. “I was depressed and it helped me get out of the house. Someone invited me to play and I’ve been there ever since,” Crump said. When the women’s league formed in 2014, Crump put together her own team and dedicated it to her son’s late father. The women’s league grew from five teams in 2014 to eight teams this past season. “Softball has been my outlet since my second cancer. It’s Continued on next page

something to keep you motivated and it gives you something to do. I love softball,” she said. She credits her mentor Mose Far Rock for helping her start her own team and putting together the new league. “He’s a great coach, a great person and he gave me the motivation to put this all together,” she said. Crump hopes she can inspire others through the newly formed cancer awareness league. “I try to motivate others and tell them that life isn’t over. A lot of people look at cancer as a killer, but with early detection

and knowing your body and knowing when something is wrong, you can catch it as soon as possible. I like to send the message of never giving up and knowing that if you believe you have a purpose in life, you have to go for it and keep fighting. I hadn’t played softball since my high school years, but it’s what kept me motivated through my second cancer. The first time, my motivation was my son,” she said. “You wonder if this is going to happen a third time and you go into a state of shock and you’re always thinking, am I going to live? You always have to find something to live for. Softball was the thing that I clung onto and it gave me that drive. I want people to know that there’s more to life than feeling sorry for yourself. Cancer is something you can be cured of, but the stress and depression will kill you if you let it. You have to keep physically and mentally fit and softball has done that for me.” “We want this league to bring awareness to the women in our community that suffer from these diseases and let people know that at the end of the day, just because you’re suffering from it, it doesn’t mean that life is over. Softball is a fun way to distract the mind and we want these women to know that we support one another and you have this family that is willing to be there with you,” Echols said.

Crump and Echols says the league also serves as a way to empower women in general and creates strong friendships. “A lot of us know each other from the summer league, but we wanted everyone to be comfortable playing with each other, so when we formed teams, we just picked names out of a bag. Everyone was excited for whatever team they were on. The friendships form and this is how we grow,” Echols said. “Some of these women don’t have friends or sisters, but we start talking and playing with each other and become the best of friends,” Crump said. “You start to run into these people around the neighborhood and these friendships reflect positively on the community, which is on its way back up.” The Cancer Awareness League

plays games at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Sundays at Beach 17th Street. The league will run for about five weeks, with a possibility for an extension. Fees are $20. “People can still join. The more, the merrier,” Echols said. “There’s no age limit or minimum. That’s what makes it fun. We have some people on the team in their 50s and boy, they can hit that ball.” Those who may want to watch, but not play, are also encouraged to come out and support the teams. If interested in joining, call Lakia at 646-373-9683, Taiesha at 917600-3144, check out the “All Women Rock” Softball Cancer Awareness League on Facebook, or head down to the Beach 17th Street field on Sundays with your gear and join in.

With extremely trying conditions, even for talented surfers, the kids took to the water in 4-5’ faced waves, powerful easterly winds and a lowering tide which meant the waves were detonating on the shallow sand bar. But they took the challenge and there were some smoking rides! What was great to see was even more kids signing up for the RBSA’s NYC Youth Surfing Championships. The 10&Under division for both boys and girls saw the best turnout yet making the semifinal heats a great clash of talent. S t a n d o u t s were Aaron Gershkovich and Rockaway local Giancarlo Acosta who came first and second respectively. The Sportsmanship Trophy, if we had one, would surely go to Giancarlo for helping fellow 10&Under competitor Parker Karinsky haul his dad’s big ass board against the gusting winds towards the jetty for the paddle back out due to the heinous current. Other standouts for the contest were winners Reilly Nichtern, Maya Karl, Sandon Karinsky, Kyle Caraciolo and Billy McDonnell. Once again the contest was run extremely efficiently with the help of surf contest veteran Rick Anthony and head judge Jeff Anthony. But none of this would be manageable if it wasn’t for the contest sponsors who really stepped it up and pushed this series to a new level, the two Mike’s of Locals Surf School put together some great “schwag” for the division winners as well as great tro-

By Emil R. Lucev, Sr. & Daughter, Katie Lucev Back in 1961, the New York City Commissioner of everything, Robert Moses, finished his total destruction of the old Seaside Amusement area in Rockaway Beach. Shortly after, with the de-mapping of certain streets and boulevards, plus re-routing of others, the area ocean to bay between

Bch. 102nd and Bch. 108th Streets was saturated with hi-rise housing on the beach side. A new school and a sewage plant had already been constructed on the bay side. Retail stores, eating locations and a cinema soon followed. See if you can visualize the changes and additions to the Seaside area and other sections east and west.

Priority # 1: Storm Protection By Hank Iori

As we approach the third anniversary of Hurricane Sandy many positive things have happened in the Rockaways. Rockaway is being rediscovered! Just consider the numbers of people who visited the beaches of Riis Park and the 20 completed blocks of the boardwalk. Many homes have been rebuilt or repaired from Breezy Point to Far Rockaway. Many new eateries and stores have opened up across the peninsula. The economic outlook for the Rockaways is improving every day. The City has promised ferry service to the Rockaways by 2017. The North/South Queens Rail is still being fought for by many Queens residents. There is no doubt if the railway were approved it would greatly enhance the north – south transportation in Queens and reduce commuting time into the city. As the city’s population grows, the greater the need for mass transit is obvious. Clearly we have many positive things happening. That said, protection of our community from devastating future storms still remains the #1 priority. Addressing this priority has been a very slow process. After Hurricane Sandy hit the Rockaways everyone agreed protection from future storms is priority #1. So how far have we gotten to meet this goal?

Ocean Side

On the ocean side of the Peninsula, a Barrier/Boardwalk from Beach 9th Street to 126th Street is under construction. The project is slow, with just 20 of the 117 blocks complete. Questions have also come up about the lower elevation and lack of sand under the three islands developed by the completed boardwalk. Everyone wishes the project would move faster, that said, when the total boardwalk project is completed and certain weak link issues are addressed, it will stand as a formidable barrier. The areas from Beach 127th to 149th Streets have received some improvements. A baffle wall is up that is rated to stop blowing sand only, deteriorating sandbags run along the baffle wall and a 16-foot sand berm (which no longer is the original height when constructed due to blowing sand and compression) runs along the beach. The combination of these elements is not sufficient. The homes in this area would sustain the same amount of damage or more if a storm like Sandy returned. Riis Park/Fort Tilden is very problematic. There does not seem to be any plan to stop a storm surge. It is wide open. Homes to its east and west side would be vulnerable to flooding. This isn’t a weak link, the chain is broken in this case. Breezy Point is a lesson in how successful a community can be when the community plans and takes direct action. Breezy started early, constructing a double dune system on their beaches. When they are completed it will serve as an ample protection from ocean surges.

Bay Side A LOOK UNDER THE BOARDWALK BY ONE OF THE ISLANDS – NO SAND PACKED UNDER THE BOARDWALK.

The bay side of the peninsula is very problematic. Stretches are owned by various agencies and private individuals. The storm walls do not exist in certain loca-

BREEZY POINT BERM tions. Many sections of the storm walls are in dire need of repair or replacement. The height of the existing walls was breached by the waters of Hurricane Sandy. Considering the simple logistics of repairing, straighten and elevating, the storm walls would be a nightmare. Even with that, it would not help our neighbors, Broad Channel, Howard Beach and JFK. The Army Corps of Engineers are working on a solution. A gate from the tip of Breezy Point to Brooklyn is one potential solution. This would protect Rockaway, Broad Channel, Howard Beach and JFK, The other and even more ambitious would be a gate from the tip of Breezy Point to Sandy Hook, NJ. This would protect all of the above including Staten Island and Manhattan. Whichever project, the cost is in the billions of dollars with a timeframe of five to 10 years once started. Now New Orleans just marked their 10th anniversary since Hurricane Katrina. They still have much work to be done to build back their community and make it safe from disastrous storm events. What this teaches us as a community is the need to be vigilant in our insistence on the Federal,

State and City level to work harder to find solutions to our #1 Priority so our community is not forgotten. Our elected officials need to continue the pressure on all Federal, State and City participants in promoting safety. We cannot afford to be complacent, we need to be diligent and continue to press for solutions. (Hank Iori is President of the Belle Harbor Property Owners Association and a member of Community Board 14).

Celebration of Culture at the Great Irish Fair By Katie McFadden We may be halfway to St. Patrick’s Day, but that doesn’t mean the celebration can’t start early. Thousands gathered in Coney Island last weekend to celebrate the 34th Annual Great Irish Fair. The annual Brooklyn event

started in 1982 by the Brooklyn Ancient Order of Hibernians who ran it until the torch was passed on to the Irish American Building Society in 2007. The weekendlong festival, always held in September, showcases some of the best aspects of Irish culture from Irish bands, bagpipers, Irish dancers, food, gifts and more. According to one of the festival organizers, Kevin Conlon, this year’s festival was a success. “There were at least 2,500 to 3,000 people on Saturday and throughout the weekend, there were about 5,000 people,” he said.

The event, held in the parking lot of the Cyclones stadium, MCU Park, featured bands like Derek Warfield and the Young Wolfetones, Broken Banjo Strings, Unforgettable Fire, the McLean Avenue Band, The Sporting Paddies, The Narrowbacks, and The

Canny Brothers. FDNY Bagpipes and Drums entertained crowds on Saturday while the NYPD Pipes and Drums performed on Sunday. There were Irish dance performances by Buckley’s School of Irish Dance on Saturday and the O’Malley Irish Dance Academy throughout the weekend. Besides attendees from the local area, Rockaway was highly represented among those who were honored. “Margaret Kingsley, one of the founders, usually has a list of honorees that we choose from and she usually picks the Father Judge Memorial Award,” Conlon said. This year, that award went to Monsignor

Martin Geraghty, the former pastor of St. Francis de Sales church in Rockaway. “Tara Stackpole, wife of Captain Timothy Stackpole, chooses the recipient of the Captain Timothy Stackpole Memorial Award,” he said. This year, Patrick Nash, chairman of the Stackpole Foundation, received that award. “That was really special,” Conlon said. The Celtic Cross award went to Martin McManus “because of his leadership and track record with the diocese,” Conlon said. The Patrolman Edward Byrne Memorial Award went to Chief Kevin

carry of the tradition of the Great Irish Fair as, “Over the years, hundreds of thousands, both young and old, have attended the Great Irish Fair and this fair is one of the best cultural events in New York City.” It’s also important to pass on and celebrate Irish culture. “When I was a kid and I would go down to the Great Irish Fair, I didn’t really appreciate the music back then, but once I got an appreciation for the culture and the music, I saw how important this event was to people. When you see the smiling faces of the people who attend over

Ward for his “leadership with the police department as Chief of Staff for the NYPD.” Other winners, not from Rockaway, included Ken Daly, Grace Sullivan, James Halpin, Sister Caroline Tweedy, Mary O’Donoghue, Sean Fitzpatrick and James McHugh. The winners were announced on Saturday by Jim O’Dey, who has been the MC of the event since 2007. Conlon attributed some of the success of the fair to the event being back at the MCU Parking Lot as opposed to West 21st Street, with permission from the Brooklyn Cyclones. “Also, the weather was beautiful all weekend and we had a solid group of honorees that brought big groups of people into the fair,” he said. Conlon says it’s important to

the weekend, you know that we have to keep this going so people can enjoy it year after year,” Conlon said. “This is kind of like a big neighborhood reunion for people. They come down to the fair and it’s kind of like the first big party after the summer.” Conlon credits many for making this year’s fair possible. “I’d like to thank the community, the entertainment, our corporate sponsors, and most importantly, our honorees,” he said. Planning has already started for next year’s event. “The organizers start planning for next year the Tuesday after the fair,” Conlon said. A date hasn’t been set, but next year’s Great Irish Fair will likely be held in late September in 2016.

AHOY ROCKAWAY! Water Temperature: 73*F at B-102 St. Ahoy anglers (and non-anglers)! Welcome to Autumn 2015! Cooler and drier air has moved into Rockaway and Broad Channel over the past week to give us more seasonable temperatures. Plenty of sunshine with cool air made for a nice weekend. Some clouds and veering winds on Sunday were observed while water samples were being taken at Beach 102nd Street. The moon tides over the past weekend made the surf rough and the currents ran stronger, even in the bay. That didn’t stop the salty crew from fishing the sea wall on Beach

Channel Drive as it was a very popular spot over the weekend. The porgy action is non-stop there and it seems like everyone knows this (probably by reading the R.T.). The “surf dogs (surf casters) were on the beach fighting the wind to get their lines out there and giving each other plenty of room. If you surf cast on the beach it’s courteous to give the surf angler fishing next to you plenty of room, like 75 yards of room. These guys DON’T like crowds. Remember to be respectful of the law, the land and your fellow angler. It’s that time of year, a little cold snap and the fishing instantly gets better, and that’s O.K. by us! This is the best

time of year for good fishing as cooler temperatures and shorter daylight hours are Mother Nature’s signal that “You better get on the move now if you migrate. Birds start to head south and fish start to feed, colorful Monarch Butterflies suddenly appear to start their long journey south flying just a few feet above the ocean. The tops of the trees start to turn to red and orange as if an R.A.A. artist just painted their brush across the tops of them. Trees start to turn colors as they sense that less sunlight is available. Birds know when to migrate when there is less sunlight entering their eyes (after fall equinox). Fish start to get more active and feed just before migrating as the water temperature drops. How do you know when the water temperature drops? Well, we take that mystery out of life, because we post the water temperature every week at the top of the fishing report. We checked in with our local stations and here’s what they had to say. Big Ron’s Fishing Station in Howard Beach: We spoke with Gary from Big Ron’s and he had some good news. Night blues are being taken on bunker (menhaden), just off the “Rockaway wall on the inside (bay). There have been reports of striped bass being taken in the area (bay) on bunker as well. The

ProHealth Excellence Urgent Care Convenience

blue claw crabs are still doing well. The porgies are all over the place and anglers are cashing in on them. Snappers are still around and growing. All the porgy action has been on bloodworms. Tom’s Wave Service Station/ Bait and Tackle on B.C.D. in Rockaway Park: We called Tom and he informs us that the action on the beach is starting to pick up. Two nice sized striped bass were taken out of the suds on the beach by a father and son team. Both fish measured 33 inches in length and were taken by using clam bellies for bait! Snappers are still around and are getting bigger. Porgy action is off the hook (it’s your job to get them ON the hook). The porgy action is GREAT and so far the bait of bloodworms is holding up. Well that’s it anglers, until next week !
