Sandpiper Playground Gets Official Opening On Friday, October 4, NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz and other officials came to Beach 107th Street and the boardwalk to officially cut the ribbon on the reconstruction of Sandpiper Playground. Due to damage from Super Storm Sandy, the playground underwent a full $6.9 million renovation; with $2.6 million from Mayor Bill de Blasio; $2 million from Katz; $1.2 million from Council Member Ulrich; and $1.4 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. “The restoration of this treasured shorefront playground is another step towards bringing world-class greenspaces to neighborhoods all over our city,” Silver said. “I am proud to re-open this beautiful park for the Rockaway communities to enjoy. With brand new play equipment and improved pathways, Sandpiper Playground has been renewed for generations to come.”

With nearly $7 million in upgrades, the revitalized Sandpiper Playground now features ADA accessible play equipment with safety surfacing; a restored wave shelter; water play equipment; new plantings; and fencing. In addition to the updated active amenities, there are opportunities for passive recreation with new seating areas along Shorefront Parkway. Pedestrian paths have also been replaced to provide easier access to the boardwalk. Located on Shorefront Parkway between 106th and 107th streets, Sandpiper Playground honors the sandpipers that can be found at nearby Rockaway Beach. These small birds make their way through the area during a long winter migration from their Arctic nesting sites. Former NYC Parks Commissioner Henry Stern changed the name of this playground from Beach 106th Playground to Sandpiper Playground in January 2000.

19 JETTIES ON THE WAY IN 2020 By Kevin Boyle

There’s still the matter of red tape. Project manager Daniel Falt, of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, addressed the Parks/Safety Committee of Community Board 14 at the Knights of Columbus on Tuesday evening to give an update on the Coastal Storm Risk Reduction Project, which includes the installation of jetties/groins. The project, born after Hurricane Sandy in 2012, primarily entails beach protection measures from Beach 9th to Beach 149th. It does not cover other peninsula areas of vulnerability including much of the bayside and points west including Riis Park, Fort Tilden, and Breezy Point. Falt noted it is a multi-agency effort including the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation,

the Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resiliency, and the New York City Parks Department. The coordination, Falt said, will be crucial during the coming construction period which is expected to begin in the spring of 2020. In addition to the installation of groins/jetties, Falt said funding is in place for the peninsula to get sand fill (replenishment) over the next fifty years and a dune system will be reinforced from Beach 9th to Beach 149th Street. The “erosion control” project is an ocean side endeavor and is the first step in an overall plan to enhance flood mitigation and protection for New York and other parts of the east coast. It is being done first because it is “relatively easier” than seawalls and other measures necessary on the bayside and beyond.

The design work has been underway for a year while the approval process goes on, which is “practically unheard of.” Falt said design usually must wait until all approvals are in place, so in bureaucratic terms, this project is moving quickly. The groins/jetties have been re-arranged in the current plan. The existing groin at Beach 149th will be rebuilt and then new stone groins, about every five blocks, moving eastward, will be in-

stalled, until the existing jetties in Rockaway Beach. Existing groins, including those in Edgemere, will be extended to mitigate sand erosion. Rock jetties are placed in specific ways to work most effectively. The stones weigh between five and 10 tons and are part of a “very sturdy design.” Falt said the groins will be constructed in a way to avoid “draft” which essentially robs the beach to the west Continued on page 29

Dog Dirt Dog Dirt gave dirt a bad rep. Dog shit, dog crap, I got. What the hell was dog dirt? See, even in the old days there was some politically correct ways of saying things. You’d be going out to play and your mother or some adult would say, “Watch out for the dog dirt.” You didn’t know what that was until you played football in a grass field covered with leaves. You’d learn the hard way. That’s the problem with a lot of PC language; it’s confusing. Dog dirt? I think Dog Deuce would’ve been so much better. Anyway, I was minding my own business (which is not to imply that I was doing my business). Wait, I think that was another old expression, the dog was doing his business as in the “Rover’s out in the back doing his business.” Do dogs still do business? I don’t know, ‘cause I’m not a dog owner and I’m out of touch with current canine conundrums. But I did get some insight recently as I tried to enjoy a beer at a local Oktoberfest. I tend to seek out cultivated conversation at parties. So, I was really in my element when I found myself on the listening end of two people discussing the anguish of dog owners and their duty to pick up doody. They walk their pooches in fear of the pick-up police. Neighbors hiding on porches, peering out windows are ready to bark if poop protocol is not followed. The dog owners want to be good neighbors. But it’s a dog’s world. One dog owner said his pooch plays games. The dog

squats and does nothing else. Fake out. You could hear the dog in a Scooby-Doo voice say, “Psyche.” But here’s the twisted part. There’s nothing there, yet, the dog owner bends down to act like he’s picking up something just so the neighbors who might’ve been faked out by the dog’s squat don’t yell at him. Lots of dog owners carry plastic bags as their preferred pick up tool. These are not foolproof. Some dog walkers are unaware, until it’s too late, that said plastic bag escaped from their pocket and flew away, leaving them unarmed. They want to die because there are people around, witnesses ready to pounce. They look around desperately for an alternative. They search every pocket three times hoping they’ll find a spare tissue or scrap of paper. Or even a dollar bill. They are horrified and want to look horrified because they want others to know they care. They hope it’s garbage pick-up day so they can raid a can and find something to use. Hey, I know this anxiety must be real. I had someone ring my bell and demand that I pick up after my dog. Ok, I said, as soon as I get one. Anyway, the man’s- bestfriend conversation was a magnet and soon I was surrounded by a pack of wild dog owners. One conscientious Belle Harbor dog-walker admitted to stealing a Rockaway Times off the steps of a neighbor’s house. It so happens, The Rockaway Times is delivered in

a clear plastic bag in this area. We’re glad to be of service, I said. And he didn’t miss a beat: Well, I would’ve saved the plastic bag and just used Boyleing Points if it was in the paper that week. The Plastic bag plight seems rife with potential problems. Some people re-use the bags they got at Stop And Shop (good recycling!) but sometimes these bags are swiss cheese. The owners pick up the dog deuce and then as they walk along they leave a Hansel and Gretel poop trail. And dog owners say once a dog commits, it’s nearly impossible to stop. The pooch doesn’t care if someone’s on the porch. They’re dumping here, now. For the dog owner, it’s a long, torturous process. The dog is dumping in front of somebody’s house and time can’t move fast enough. The sterling conversation then goes up a notch. Dog owner one says, I’m just praying it’s not diarrhea. What’s a plastic bag gonna do for you then? What do you say to the

Page 5 people on the porch, sorry I’ll be back with a paper towel. I was still smarting from that Boyleing Points jab so I threw some gasoline on this dumpster fire. I said that dog pee should be picked up, too. Huh? Yea, you should have to bring pee cups. Tell me the difference between an adult peeing in the street and your dog? People in the future are gonna say, god, they let dogs pee in the street back then? Jeez. I was joking but then started to think about it. Hmmm…. Dog diapers. They’re gonna be big. Maybe I’ll even get a dog. And I might need a friend after this.

Orwell 2019 When I was in high school in the late 1980s, I was assigned the George Orwell novel, 1984. I barely got through it and kept saying to myself, “This guy is crazy, he thinks the world would have been filled with cameras and the government watching us at our every move in the year 1984?” I disliked the book for many years. Skip to today and I teach the novel and my students and I love it because in 2019 many of the things Orwell had predicted have come true. Some of my best research projects were privacy based on the novel and

comparing it to today’s surveillance world. One of the reasons Orwell wrote the novel and worked tirelessly to finish it before his death was that he was afraid of a totalitarian government. He was worried about government taking away our freedom and being in charge of every facet of our lives. Over the last few months, we have had multiple drownings. One young man drowned in Jamaica Bay on a beautiful Sunday afternoon and this past week, two boys (as I write this are still missing and presumed

dead) went for a swim on a hot day when no lifeguards were present. Both incidents were tragedies and young lives were lost. But many people want to blame everyone under the sun for a myriad of reasons. When the boy drowned in Jamaica Bay, the cries were there were not enough signs or large enough signs to declare “No Swimming.” People were quoted saying that there should be barbed wire to prevent teens from entering the water. What if I wanted to use a paddle board or kayak from that area? Now because people are not accountable for their actions, the government must take control and no one can use the area? The same goes for the beaches. Most times people do drown is due to swimming in areas or times when there are no lifeguards. One person stated on social media we should have lifeguards all through September. The drownings last week actually happened on October 1, and this past September was un-

seasonably warmer than last year. Last year, it rained almost every weekend. People need to respect the ocean. Seasoned swimmers and fishermen lose their lives to the oceans. We just saw the Bahamas ravished by Hurricane Dorian. People have to know the ocean is a powerful beast. What we do not need is total government control. We do not need barbed wire to prevent me from walking the shore if it is still a pleasant day in the fall. Now, I do agree with changing the lifeguard hours. 10-6 seems silly to me as many people do not get down to the beach until the early afternoon and I think 11-7 or even 12-8 would be better hours. But we cannot have around-the-clock lifeguards. As my old co-worker Howie Schwach said on a post about the drownings last week: We could have lifeguards 23 hours a day and the teenagers would go swimming in the one hour no lifeguards were present. As a high school teacher I know he is 100% correct. Have a great week everyone.

term limits stuck to his beliefs. John Cori, president of the important Rockaway Beach Civic Association has stepped down, amicably. Bridget Klapinski, Co-Vice President with seniority in the position, assumes the role of RBCA President, effective immediately. Bridget has been under the radar sometimes but she’s nonetheless been such a positive force for Rockaway. And by the way, she’s a one-woman cleanup crew on the beach. You can see her often, many mornings, on the beach picking up stuff left behind. She does it without fanfare. The RBCA is in good hands. ***** Speaking of civics, the Belle Harbor Property Owners Association's next meeting is Tuesday, October 15, 7 p.m. at PS 114. There will be a 100th Precinct report and an update from the Army Corps regarding the groin/jetty installation and the Reformulation Plan. ***** Plum Tomatoes, now with a new owner, has not closed. We

Page 7 got some wrong info and said the place was closing for renovations. It is open for business and it’s new name will be Plum Tomatoes by La Sorrentina. Much success! The owner, John Mazzolla, owns La Sorrentina, a popular place in Brooklyn. ***** There will be a fundraiser at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club this Friday for the Dorothy Bennett Center. The Center was very important to Pat Morgan, former Rockaway Times reporter and SolShyne band member, who died recently. It’s wonderful that ongoing support is part of Pat’s legacy. ***** Bungalow Bar is hosting a one-night only pop-up dinner with acclaimed chef and restaurateur Mauro Maccioni on Friday, October 18 from 7-10 p.m. It’s a four course meal. Closure For the Drowning Victims’ Families The families of two teen boys can now have closure to a tragedy that began on Rockaway’s beach. Both bodies of the teen drowning victims from the October 1 drowning have been recovered. The families of Gabriel Rice, 16, and Adedayo Adewale, 15, are now facing the reality of the loss of their boys after they went missing in the waters off Beach 96th Street on a rare, warm October day. On early Friday afternoon, October 4, a body was discovered on the bayside of the Breezy Point tip. The person was declared deceased at around 1 p.m. By the next day, police confirmed that this was the body of one of Tuesday’s drowning victims—Adedayo Adewale. Two days later, after 5 p.m., police responded to a report of a body floating in the water off of Glass Bottle Beach, an area in Brooklyn near Dead Horse Bay and Floyd Bennett

Field. The body was recovered and brought to a nearby marina, where the person was declared dead. By the next day, this was confirmed to be the body of the second victim, Gabriel Rice. While the findings bring closure to the families, friends, and the staff and classmates at Ozone Park’s High School for Construction Trades, Engineering and Architecture, where the boys attended school, they now face the grief of their worst fears confirmed. Both families are in the process of planning funeral arrangements. For Adewale, his family is preparing to return his body to his native country of Nigeria. A classmate of the boys has started an online fundraiser to help the families cover some of the funeral costs. The families are in touch with the fundraiser’s organizer. Action: Stage Set For Rockaway’s Film Festival

Next week Rockaway will play host to the second annual Rockaway Beach Film Festival on Beach 74th Street which aims to fill the cinema void in Rockaway by presenting a collection of shortand full-length feature films. “Ever since I’ve been living in Rockaway, there was always a need for a movie theater,” Sam Fleischner said. Fleischner is a Rockaway resident of ten years, who brought the idea to

show films on the peninsula to life last October with the first festival. “It was successful, and had good energy all weekend long.” Fleishner is a filmmaker himself. His feature, Stand Clear of the Closing Doors was called a “small miracle of a film” by the New York Times and garnered honors at various film festivals in 2014. Fleischner put together last October’s festival with Courtney Muller, another filmmaker whom, he met last year. “We hit the ground running. It came together really quickly last year,” he said, discussing the somewhat complicated task of building the program, cleaning their 74th Street venue, and getting permission from filmmakers (and in a few cases, their estates) to show their work. Last year’s festival created

the opportunity for another screening in January as well as a set of three screenings over the summer outdoors at the Riis Park Bathhouse where they screened Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal, Rob Reiner’s Princess Bride, and the anime classic Spirited Away. The organizers say this year will be “Bigger,” than last year with a larger program and more conversations with filmmakers in person. Some of the program highlights Fleischner and Muller are looking forward to this year include Friday’s feature film, Blow the Man Down, which was recently acquired for distribution by Amazon Studios after its Tribeca premiere. They are also looking forward to Initials S.G, which also screened at Tribeca this year.

Fleischner hopes this year’s festival and their other screenings could someday lead to a more permanent fixture for film in Rockaway, a vacuum that has existed since the last theater in Rockaway closed in the 90s. “Hopefully it [The festival] sparks a new interest,” he said. The festival will run at the same venue as last year, 323 Beach 74th Street from October 17th through the 21st. “No matter who you are, or where you are from, people love movies,” Muller said. Lifesaving Ideas Dear Editor: After some more horrible drownings this week is there any chance you can reach out to our local politicians (Stacey Amato comes to mind because she gets stuff done) and put forth a mandatory annual water safety class through our city schools? The FDNY is the greatest Department in the world and they would love the opportunity to put a program together that could save kids’ lives! I am sure of it! That is what they do!! All five boroughs are near water and even if most kids aren’t, they still go to the beach by train or bus and most have

no water experience at all. I believe this is something all schools worldwide should consider doing. It’s that important! They can make it similar to fire drills. Rockaway parents teach their children about this their whole lives growing up but other kids do not get this extremely important lesson! If the water is rough, you don’t go in period. We have all heard that over and over again from Mom and Dad! Most kids do not know how to swim and even if they do, they do not understand how to deal with big waves, riptides and strong, swift currents. That comes with water experience! Just ask any surfer! They are at the age where, even if they’re scared and their friends jump into the water, they jump in, too, so they won’t be teased and the outcome is fatal. Every year this happens and many times more than once and we have to do a better job to avoid it. Everyone in Rockaway knows the scenario. First you hear the sirens and then

the helicopters and you know it’s another water rescue that rarely ends well! My good friend FF Timmy Smith L134 had an incredible water rescue a while back where he saved a life but you do not hear about too many of them because the ocean usually wins. There is also the danger to all the first responders who enter the water to rescue and to search for a victim. Sitting through a safety class once a year with video and some interviews with families that have lost their children would hopefully teach the kids what not to do when they are at the beach! Late August/September is when the water has a greater chance of being much more rough and dangerous due to the storms coming from down south and also a time to increase public safety on our beaches especially when you have a warm autumn like the one we have had. These steps need to be taken. Another situation where some people get in trouble is on the rock jetties. I truly believe that they don’t think about what could happen to them when they take a walk out on them. This is especially true with all the visitors that Rockaway gets nowadays. We all know how fast and powerful the water can become in just a few minutes, but a lot of people do not! How would they know the difference between high and low tide? The waves come in and knock people over and this makes for another very dangerous situation. Besides maybe getting swept out to sea, you have a great chance to bash your head off the rocks and then getting swept out to sea! Not fun! With the ferry bringing so many people to Rockaway, I feel some additional precautions need to be put in place so the safety of everyone is increased! Maybe hand out some water safety literature on the ferry? The people have about an hour on the boat, so if one person read about the dangers that the Rockaway waters can present and was extra cautious and didn’t drown, wouldn’t that have been worth it? In Long Beach they have

Rockaway should do the same thing to reduce any chance of anyone getting swept off their feet and seriously hurt or worse! I am the proud father of two super Rockaway girls and the thought that I didn’t do all I could to teach and protect them would drive me nuts! We should do that for all kids! Road Rage Dear Editor: Are you kidding me? No seriously, NYC, is this a joke? The driving situation in Rockaway has become atrocious. Traffic jams were a non-entity in Rockaway just a few short years ago, now they are every day. Shore Front Parkway used to have three lanes and was practically light-free when I was younger. Now there is (incredibly) a light every twenty feet even though there is no cross traffic. There is construction everywhere. What exactly are they doing? Who knows? I’m not sure they know. After weeks of work by the abandoned bank, what is better? Drive down Rockaway Beach Boulevard lately? Hope you don’t wear dentures. Bus lanes that pop up overnight, moronic bike lanes a block from the boardwalk, red light cameras, a new speeding camera, the new plastic stick barrier? (seriously?) in the middle of the street on Beach 105th Street. Let’s not forget our bridges under constant construction, the tolls themselves and the state troopers which are a fairly new shakedown by the State. Where are our elected officials? Or should I say local elected officials, you know, the ones who claim to represent us and our interests? Just three weeks short of the seventh anniversary of the storm that changed everything, word came from the Buildings Department that the Harbor Light will shine again. A Temporary Certificate of Occupancy (TCO) was granted on Tuesday, October 2, setting the table for the muchloved, much-missed pub/restaurant to begin anew. The original building burned to the ground on the night of Hurricane Sandy, October 29, 2012 and that was just the beginning of the troubles and challenges faced by the Heeran family, and Chef William Whelan, long-time owners of the iconic Belle Harbor establishment. In the September 19 issue of The Rockaway Times, Katie McFadden reported that the Harbor Light had passed all Building Department requirements but owners, Sean and Billy Heeran, were waiting for one last approval, the signoff for the handicap lift in front of the building. Two weeks later, the crucial approval was in hand. The long road back from the destructive fire was full of obstacles. Financing, insurance, construction, architectural issues, and most notably, bureaucracy, were just some of the challenges. Public support was steady and strong through the

years. Letters were written, petitions were signed, public meetings were packed. The support, however, was mostly cold comfort as the calendar flipped to another year after another year. The Heerans were generally quiet about their frustration and resisted airing their complaints for fear of backlash from various city agencies. They appealed to every elected official and most pledged support but results were hard to detect. The bar restaurant has sat ready to open for years. But finally — finally — the doors will open for business. As for opening day, Friday, October 18, the plans are to open the bar at noon. The restaurant will likely open by the end of the month. Although the facility was ready as soon as the Department of Building issued the TCO, the Heerans must establish accounts with liquor and beer distributors, ready a new computer system, arrange staffing and make general preparations for what will be a busy, busy place of business. NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver joined City Council Member Donovan Richards and local community members to break ground on the total reconstruction of Almeda Playground through the Community Parks Initiative (CPI). The project was funded by an $8.1 million allocation from Mayor Bill de Blasio and is expected to be completed by fall 2020. “We are thrilled to break ground on the Arverne community’s vision for a dynamic recreational space,” Silver said. “Thanks to the Community Parks Initiative, Almeda Playground will undergo a huge transformation that will enhance this vital greenspace to better serve the students of P.S. 42 and the entire neighborhood for generations to come.” Almeda Playground, located on the Rockaway peninsula, is named for nearby Almeda Avenue. The area was spotted

by Henry Hudson in 1609 and served as home to a small tribe of Canarsie Indians. The playground opened in 1965 and was originally named P.S. 42 Playground before being renamed by Parks in 1985. Almeda Playground serves as an excellent recreational space for the students of P.S. 42 and the surrounding neighborhoods. Richards said, “Every community deserves easy access to quality. I’m proud to say this $8.1 million investment will deliver a fully reconstructed park shaped by and for the community.” Parks held a public input meeting in October 2016 where community members presented their ideas for a reimagined park. The reconstructed playground, which reflects the community’s input, will include a new play area, spray showers, an adult fitness area, basketball and handball courts, shaded seating areas and more.

The Trickster Treating If it's early October then we all know that Halloween is just around the proverbial corner. Speaking quite honestly, Halloween was never a big deal holiday celebration when I was a kid. Even as a child, I always thought the whole getting dressed up in a costume thingy was a tad silly but I was enough of a pragmatist to weigh the embarrassment of wearing an outlandish outfit against the windfall of sugary delights that inevitably accompanied the rounds of extortion (aka" "trick or treat") to the houses and apartments of my neighbors. Surely there was nothing scary or frightening about the holiday. During the late 1950s, as I grew a little older, each year during October, I found myself eschewing costumes in favor of celebrating Halloween by viewing the (now) old Universal Pictures horror movie classics (Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, the Werewolf, the Creature from the Black Lagoon and of course, Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein) on John Zacherly's Shock Theater which was always attended by Zacherly's wife referred to only as

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2019 "My Dear" who remained unseen and not uttering a word while safely ensconced in her casket during the entire show. I always tell my beloved Grace ("she who must be obeyed") that the Zacherlys truly had a marriage made in heaven. Although these pictures were not actually frightening, I must admit that I found the scene in the original Frankenstein where the monster unintentionally drowns the little girl he has met by the lake rather disturbing. Yeah, the big guy's babysitting skills were somewhat lacking. After a period of time, Halloween once again faded from interest as a holiday of note until around 1980 when a young lady named Cassandra Peterson introduced her late night monster movie mash up of B movies flicks along with her character of Elvira. Replete with her tight-fitting, low-cut, cleavage-displaying black gown, her show was an American comedy television series that aired B-grade horror movies, occasionally interrupted by risque comments from the hostess, Elvira. In some episodes during intermission, Elvira would get an unexpected phone call from a character called "The Breather" who would only call and tell Elvira weird jokes. In hindsight, I believe the only people who were frightened by this show were the producers who I am sure spent each show scared witless Cassandra's Elvira dress would have an on-air wardrobe malfunction. Much to the dismay of her younger male audience, Elvira was no Janet Jackson. I mention all of the above simply to point out that I have never found Halloween to be scary or otherwise frightening and I tell my family just that each and every year the holiday approaches. That all changed just recently. My younger sister Margie, who is a classical music aficionado, toured Europe last year with her husband George and she recently told me the following story about her trip. Continued on page 24

Local Powerhouse Trio Says, “Thank You!” to Beach 116th with New Cafe By Kami-Leigh Agard

While milling around Beach 116th Street, next to Rogoff ’s, you may have noticed the nondescript storefront sign, “Thank You Cafe.” Well, let your curiosity lead you in because once you open the door, your visual and olfactory organs will immediately be fixated on the eclectic display of food and scents wafting from the kitchen. From the variety of traditional breakfast, ciabatta and Japanese sandwiches, frittatas, Vietnamese style chimichurri brisket, kale salad, smoked king salmon, sardines with piquillo peppers, and charred grapefruit served with coconut yogurt—ooh la la!—and more, you definitely will be wooed and exclaim, “Thank you!” Who are the curators of this much-welcomed addition to the commercial block? None other than Maribel Araujo of Caracas Beach 106th Boardwalk Concession, Andrew Field of Tacoway and Chef Donata Orsi, locally known for her Beaches food stand at the Beach 97th Street Concession. For Araujo, to open an allyear foodie establishment was always a goal, and to do this on Beach 116th Street, a Rockaway commercial street landmark, is a blessing. “We relished the opportunity, and our landlord is an amazing human being. He really wanted to do something special on Beach 116th Street to make it a better destination for the whole community to come down and enjoy a cup of coffee or a plate of food. (Note that drinks are served up by head barista, Jadel Biteng, a Rockaway local). Plus, we are happy to be in a landmark area that has been a commercial corridor since the 1930s,” Araujo said. Araujo, is quite humble, considering that she opened the wildly popular Caracas Arepa Bar in Rockaway in 2011 and stayed the course, even after Hurricane Sandy. Plus, she also was named a “Mil-

lion Dollar Woman” in a CBS special series about women on the move. Her partner, Andrew Field, is just as shy, but he also has had much to crow about as he is the mastermind behind Tacoway, which was first located on Beach 96th Street, re-located to the Rockaway Beach Surf Club, and even opened another location at the Rockaway Brewing Company. He’s got quite a following, but if you mention it, he will probably just bow his head in thanks. Araujo was firm in making sure that Chef Orsi received all the applause for the food customers have already been raving about. “A lot of people feel that I am the one behind the kitchen, but it’s really our fantastic chef, Donata Orsi, who’s originally from Italy, and has worked in well-renowned restaurants across NYC. She’s been living in Rockaway for the last three years, and fell in love with the community, and she’s so excited to be a part of Thank You Cafe, offering her love for food to a place she calls, home,” Araujo said. Orsi has quite the quite culinary resume. Born and raised in Tuscany, Italy, she has worked for a bevy of impressive food establishments, including Ottolenghi in London, the Grammery Tavern and Two Hands Cafe, and even owned her own catering business in NYC. Her hands have been immersed in cuisines from Mediterranean, Asian/Japanese fusion, and American standard fare. How-

ever, though she has been a chef in NYC’s most prestigious restaurants, Orsi shared that her love is cooking for a fun, friendly counter-style atmosphere. “I’ve specialized in this type of food for years, and I love it because I really get to connect with the customers. And at Thank You Cafe, from the very first day, I’m so happy to hear our customers’ reviews. They love it. I live in Rockaway, and see there are so many food options, but it’s such a pleasure to bring something new for the community to enjoy. The menu is a smorgasbord of so many cultural flavors. I’m just excited to present something different in an unpretentious way. I love when families come and enjoy our little cafe. This is just our soft opening, and we will have lots more to come!” Orsi said. Thank You Cafe just had its soft opening this past week. As of now, Thank You is open for breakfast and lunch, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. They offer food options for every palate, whether you are looking for gluten-free, vegan or just standard fare. According to Araujo, in the next few weeks, the cafe will be extending their opening hours to include dinner. “We will be an all-day cafe,

offering deliveries and we are already set up for both dine-in and take out. As for now, we are literally a bare bones set up, super excited to be part of Beach 116th Street. The entire team is happy to have an allyear operation in Rockaway, but we are taking it one step at a time,” Araujo said. Thank You Cafe has a warm and welcoming dine-in area, and possesses a vibe that spells, not just, “Thank You!” but “Welcome home.” The cafe currently seats approximately 20 people, and is in the midst of expanding the back area for more seating. Orangetheory Fitness Coming to Beach 116th

The Marcal Group has signed its first commercial tenant to One Sixteen, the new condo development quickly going up on Beach 116th Street. Orangetheory Fitness will take over 3,100 square feet and is expected to be the first major fitness brand to open in the Rockaways. Matthew Long, a Rockaway resident, will own and operate the One Sixteen location. He currently owns two other Orangetheory studios in Connecticut. Long, a former NYC firefighter, who suffered severe injuries while bike riding to work during a transit strike in 2005, has since run marathons and been a fitness guru to many. "When I saw that Mark Caller and The Marcal Group were invested in trying to improve

our community with a luxury Beach 116th development, it seemed a perfect location for Orangetheory,” Long said. “Orangetheory will be the very first brand of its stature to take advantage of the growing Rockaway community. I’m excited to be a part of this, as my passion has always been to help others, from the FDNY to Orangetheory, changing lives one heartbeat at a time!” One Sixteen has a total of 14,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor, and will have 86 condominiums, including eight duplex residences with private outdoor space. According to reps of the Marcal Group, early sales at One Sixteen have been strong, with nearly 30% of the residences already in contract.

Last Halloween, while in Vienna, she was passing Vienna's Zentralfriedhof graveyard on October 31. All of a sudden, she heard some music. No one is around, so she started searching for the source. If anything, the MTA is known for its delays, and its release of the Rockaway Branch Feasilbility Study was no different. The study, announced in April 2016, was supposed to be completed by June 30, 2017. On Tuesday, October 8, almost two and half years late, the 78-page report was released. The study considered all things involved in reactivating the Rockaway Beach Branch, an abandoned rail line, for the Long Island Railroad or the New York City Transit subway system. The study considered different routes, new station constructions, tunnels for various stretches, real estate acquisition, line capacity, among other things. The study concluded that “there is no single ‘fatal flaw’ that would disqualify either of the LIRR or NYCT alternatives from being constructed and operated.” The study cautioned,

“However, both options have a number of impacts associated with reactivating the proposed services that are presented for consideration with each of the alternatives.” The Long Island Rail Road alternative had capital costs estimates of more $6 billion and the New York City Transit option rang in at more than $8 billion. The dollar estimates are likely to be used by both sides of the argument. Those against will cite the high costs; those in favor will insist that this is a vital investment in Queens and that delaying the implementation will result in higher costs (money, traffic, pollution). Implantable cardiac devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators are very common these days, but these life-saving devices are very different as are the indications for their use. The heart has its own pacemaker, called the SA node, located in the upper chamber, or atrium. It generates an electrical impulse that causes the atrium, then the ventricle, or lower chamber, to contract, thereby generating a heartbeat. For reasons that are still not clear, the SA node may fail to generate an impulse, or that impulse may be blocked somewhere along the electrical pathway. This causes a slow heart rate, or bradyarrhythmia. The patient may feel very fatigued. Once the problem is diagnosed by an EKG, a pacemaker may be inserted to correct the heart rate. Usually inserted under the skin in the upper left chest,

a wire called a lead is threaded through a main vein into the right ventricle, where it is anchored. Occasionally, wires must be threaded into both ventricles. This scenario uses a bivent(ricular) pacemaker. Implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICDs) are used for shocking the heart in the same manner as defibrillator paddles that are used externally. If you watch medical shows, you’ve seen this simulated many times. Patients who have had heart attacks or who have other problems that cause the heart to enlarge and pump blood poorly have a condition called a cardiomyopathy. When the ejection fraction (EF), a measurement of the heart’s pumping efficiency, falls below 20 percent (normal EF is 60 to 65 percent), the risk of fatal arrhythmias like ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation rises dramatically. For this reason and others, an ICD may be implanted. The method of implantation is similar to a pace-

maker, but an ICD has 2 leads, or wires. ICDs are implanted in the upper chest or left side. The electrical jolt from an ICD ranges from barely noticeable to a strong shock that may knock a person off their feet. A condition where an ICD is giving repeated shocks is called an ICD storm and immediate medical attention is a must. First described in 1968, a condition that causes pacemaker or ICD failure is called Twiddler’s, or Fiddler’s, syndrome. It is rare, seen in up to 7 percent of pacemaker and ICD failures, and usually within one year of implantation. It is most commonly seen in elderly ladies who have impaired cognition, or dementia. Older women tend to have looseness or laxity of the subcutaneous tissues like muscles. They may consciously or unconsciously fiddle with the device, often twirling it around under the skin. This causes the leads to be displaced and coil up. Depending on where the leads wind up, symptoms may

vary. Symptoms may include dizziness, fatigue, syncope (loss of consciousness), slow heart rate, involuntary muscle twitching in the upper abdomen or left arm, hiccups, of involuntary respiratory spasms (due to stimulation of the diaphragm). Twiddler’s can be easily diagnosed by EKG and chest X Ray, which can show the coiled and displaced wires. The cure is either replacement of the device or re-anchoring of both the device and the leads. Lastly, pacemakers and ICDs are programmed by using magnets. Therefore, any device that creates a magnetic field, for example a cellphone, should always be placed more than 6 inches from the implanted device. This includes metal detectors and metal-detecting wands. They can cause the device to malfunction. If you have one of these devices, ask for a manual pat-down instead. Duct Tape Invitational Makes Waves By Nicole Taylor-Lang

Surf’s up in Rockaway Beach! This past weekend professional surfer and surf idol Joel Tudor brought the Vans Duct Tape Invitational to the shores of our beautiful beach town of Rockaway. Tudor, who is a former longboard world champion, started this event to showcase both male and female longboarders. The first event in 2010 was actually held in our great state of New York, but in Montauk. “New York City is the battery pack for America, so for these kids to get a slight bit of that energy before they go to the beach is the goal and plus they get a better culture,” Tudor said. “The city life is different from California.” The event took place in a span of four days from October 3 to October 6 on Beach 91st Street and the ocean. This was not only a surf competition but it also included film festivals, skating jams and more. The surfers won prize purses while showing off

their talents and tricks on the board. This attracted local surfers, skaters and beach enthusiasts bringing our community together with other like-minded individuals. “These events are really nice and it’s cool to see the local community come out and see what’s happening in the surf world,” Karina Rozunko, 23, of San Clemente, California, said. The majority of surf competitions are shortboard-based and it was always a dream of Tudor’s and Vans’ to create an event that would focus on longboarding. “After our first event, we got a lot of attention for making longboarding look different,” Tudor

said. “The way it was perceived prior was kinda of a misinterpretation. It was seen as more sporty as opposed to the style. So all the things that were overlooked, we focused on.” The weekend was busy not just with surf but with many events for the community to enjoy. Friday at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club, film projects by pro surfers Karina Rozunko, Ainara Aymat, Le-Ann Curren and Hanna Scott premiered. The next night at the Rockaway Brewing Company, a short film by Alex Knost called, “Tan Madonna” was presented. After that, there was live music and entertainment at the brewery. Also, at the tents on the boardwalk were board shapers and artists designing boards. Pro surfer, Pat Schmidt, who currently resides in Montauk, was among the board shapers there. New to board shaping, this was his first time shaping demo boards at this event. “You don’t realize how much work goes into making them,” Schmidt

said. “It really gave me a new found appreciation for board shapers and surfing.”

On Sunday, surfers Pat Schmidt, Karina Rozunko, Alex Knost and pro skater Andrew Allen presented their own handshaped custom surf boards. The boards were available to rent to the public. They will be donated to Bunger, a local New York surf shop. It was an eventful weekend in Rockaway for all who attended. Tudor is grateful for all who came out and showed support. “We try to create environments like this where everyone is together,” Tudor said. “That’s the ultimate goal.”

With the number of jetties, scheduling around piping plover nesting season, the length of the bid process and the uncertainties that follow, it will be about three years before Rockaway has a full field of rock jetties. The current plan awaits final approval in Washington. It was signed off by the Army Corps on August 22 and sent to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, R.D. James, a civilian and political appointee, with a background in farming. By statute, he has 120 days to officially authorize, or not, so there remains some degree of doubt over the project and its construction phase. Falt said he expects the green light to happen in December.

Hudson Yards

I know you’ve probably been asking, “Where’s Lazer been?” At least I hope you have! Been busy with the band this summer as we transitioned from the Grayriders to the Graytrippers. I know you probably are saying “Really, Lazer?” Also been involved in this wedding thing coming up in a week or so, but truth be told, my wife and daughter have been the chief architects there, I’m really just eye candy for that one. No, the truth is that I haven’t had a decent idea, nothing good to share, no interest-

wanted to have an Olympic Stadium built and then when that fell through, wanted to build a new stadium for the Jets. Given the current “war” on cars by New York politicians, it’s a good thing neither of those things happened. It’s hard to find a main thoroughfare that hasn’t been artificially narrowed by a bus lane, a bike lane, and parking lane one lane away from the curb. It’s really insane. But I digress. Hudson Yards is a $25 billion project that spans about seven or eight buildings along

most attention are two weird buildings that set the whole area apart: The Vessel and The Shed. The Vessel is a shell that has stairs that you can climb or an elevator you can take to the top and walk down. You get a free ticket that has a time frame to go in from a kiosk next to it. You use your phone to register your ticket. Believe it not, people line up to go in it. The Shed is an entertainment venue and it’s huge. It sits on gigantic rollers, and I guess at times it will be rolled back to allow for larger audiences. It’s very cool to

the west side just south of the Javits Center. A piece of brilliant planning puts the Hudson Yards right at the northern end of the High Line. That’s right. You can now get on the High Line at the Whitney Museum in the Meat Packing District (there is no more meat packing there anymore) and walk to Hudson Yards; and, it is also now at the end of the newly extended # 7 Train. And let me tell you that station is a thing of beauty, too. The area is bounded by 10th and 12th Avenues and runs between 30th and 34th Streets. So, it’s a large swath of the city. The buildings are very creatively designed and different than anywhere else in Manhattan. The main building houses some pretty cool restaurants and all the high-end retail stores. So, if you want to do some fun Christmas shopping, this is definitely a destination for that. But what has gotten the

The scale is massive, and it is almost a self-contained city within a city, which makes it fun to visit and be a visitor within our own city. I am amazed by the vision, the planning, the commitment to such a project. It just proves that our city is really the greatest city in the world, because nowhere else do cities build on this scale. This project is built over the train depot! And talk about providing jobs for the construction industry, wow! The best way to get there would be to take the ferry in to Manhattan, then walk up to the # 2 train at Wall & William to 42nd, switch to the # 7 one stop to Hudson Yards. Or take the # 1 from Rector Street to 23rd Street and walk west to the High Line ending at Hudson Yards, a great way to spend a Fall day in New York City. Enjoy!

IMPERMANENCE One of our yoga teachers settled us in on our mats with a reading about impermanence from a pocket book by Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist monk and peace activist. The concept of impermanence is one of the most difficult to live by. We spend our lives making connections with people on different levels—getting close, sharing experiences, being attached, reliant, familiar—and then one day a huge change: separation, change of heart, or death. It floors us. When I was doing my yoga

teacher training immersed in the full yoga traditional teachings, we were invited on Sunday mornings to a dharma talk in the nearby town. An elderly enlightened being guided the talks and meditations sitting atop a mountain of blankets joking that with each year another blanket added! He talked about losing a dear friend in the community and although he has led talks many times on the precept of impermanence as propagated in the Buddhist teachings, he was absolutely “human” in

his reaction to this loss. And he shared his feelings of sadness and grief and of those of his friend’s immediate family. What this told me is: while we read the teachings and say we have to get to that place of acceptance of life and what happens, it doesn’t mean that we do not feel and go through the process of feeling the suffering of loss. Being sentient beings, we are constantly thinking and feeling, reacting to people and to our environment. So I take the precept of impermanence to be a comfort in that—ok, this very sad thing happened which caused me suffering, but knowing that life is constant change, we may be able to at some point come to some peace with that. More at ease, not closing off the heart because of the pain. When something happens: “what am I going to do?” Realizing that this is life—a hard one to swallow—and everything changes or will change, opens the path to ease some of the pain resulting from a life occurrence. For me

Page 37 this goes in line with practicing “santosha”—contentment—in the yogic tradition. Being content with where we are at this moment in time, in health, mental and emotional states of being creates space to let it just be, rather than “why is this so” and “if only” and, and, and... We are in this space at this moment in time because of where we were, did, whatever, and accepting that place can bring some peace and open the way for feeling better and healing. “Understanding impermanence can give us confidence, peace, and joy. Impermanence does not necessarily lead to suffering... Impermanence teaches us to respect and value every moment and all of the precious things around us and inside of us. When we practice mindfulness of impermanence, we become fresher and more loving.”—“The Pocket Thich Nhat Hanh” May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. A CURE

A family 5k Walk/Run On the morning of Sunday, September 29th, the weather was beautiful on the boardwalk at Beach 102nd Street with over 300 runners, walkers, scooters, and baby stroller pushers assembled for the start of the Third Annual “Catch a Cure” 5K Family Walk/Run fundraiser for Cancer Awareness. This event raises money to help benefit families in our community touched by cancer. All the money raised was donated to the Rockaway Wish, a local non-profit organization that recognizes the needs of the community, and volunteers their time and talents to assist our neighbors during difficult times. The day was about our local communities being UNITED as ONE! We were not individually Breezy Point, Rockaway Beach, or Broad Channel. On this day we were a FAMILY. Julia Courtney kicked it off with her amazing voice singing National Anthem followed by Our Father Jim Cunningham of St. Francis de Sales offered a prayer before the race. Following the race, everyone gathered at the Community House for the results, awards, drinks, food, and to enjoy great company and offered special recognition of certain people. Catch a Cure will always honor and remember a person from each of our local communities. Special thanks to the families who allowed us to be their extended family. Let’s Go Far Rock! Let’s go Seahorses! The Far Rockaway Educational Campus’ football season is in full swing and Far Rockaway has some exciting games in the lineup. On Friday, October 11 at 3:30 p.m., the Seahorses take on Long Island City at the Far Rockaway campus (821 Bay 25th Street) field. The following Friday, October 18, they’ll be in the Bronx, playing against Mott Haven High School at 7 p.m. On Saturday, October 26, the Seahorses are back on home turf at the Far Rockaway campus to take on John Adams at 11 a.m. All are welcome to come out to the games to show their support.

Keeping in the spirit of showing support, the Far Rockaway Educational Campus will also be holding a blood drive on October 17. The blood drive will take place in the auditorium between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Anyone is welcome to donate. Be sure to bring ID.
