ROCK! AWAY! Music Fest Returns Saturday

By Katie McFadden

Summer may be over but ROCK! AWAY! isn’t done yet. Event promoter Max Power’s ROCK! AWAY! Music Fest is back for round two this weekend. ROCK! AWAY! has been bringing musical talent to the peninsula for multi-day music extravaganzas since 2017. Typically a summer festival, Max Power decided to broaden the ROCK! AWAY! brand and host multiple events throughout the year. Some got a taste of it this summer with the ROCK! AWAY! Summer Fest in July at the Beach 97th Concession. Now this weekend, Power is bringing ROCK! AWAY! back with another three-day music event across three boroughs, with the big show taking place back at Rockaway Bazaar’s Beach 97th Concession on Saturday, October 16. Part of this weekend’s event is made possible by a big grant Max Power recently received. Power was recognized with a $5,000 City Artists Corps Grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. Over the course of three award cycles, more than 3,000 artists will receive $5,000 grants to engage the public with artist activities across New York City’s five boroughs this summer and fall. Artists can use the grant to create new work or a phase of a work, or re-stage preexisting creative activities across any discipline. This grant is supported by the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) as well as Queens

Theatre. Power received the grant to continue his ongoing work of bringing live music to Rockaway through the ROCK! AWAY! Music Fest. This weekend will demonstrate the fruits of his labor. ROCK! AWAY! will kick off in Manhattan on Thursday, October 14 at 7 p.m. Vic Thrill, Hastings 3000, Sex Rays and the Low Rats will be playing at Revision Lounge (219 Avenue B, Manhattan). And on Friday at 8 p.m., the fun heads to Brooklyn with The Black Widows with Hastings 3000, Sex Rays, Low Rats and special guest Wayne Sayres at Brooklyn Music Kitchen (177 Vanderbilt, Brooklyn). Tickets for both shows are $15 at the door or can be purchased in advance at www. RockawayMusicFest.com The main event will take place in Rockaway itself at the Beach 97th Concessions. This free music fest starts at noon and goes until 10 p.m. The lineup includes Butter Brain, Black Widows, Sex Rays & Low Rats, Strange Neighbors, HayBaby, Social Creatures, Karabas Barabas, Control The Sound, Shadow Monster and You Want Milk. This is a rain or shine event and in the event of rain, the venue will change to the Rockaway Brewing Company on Beach 72nd Street. No matter where the daytime music plays, the after party will take place starting at 8 p.m. on Saturday on the Rooftop of The Rockaway Hotel with DJs Brother Rich and Roland. “ROCK! AWAY! MUSIC FEST is now a yearly event to help create something strong to draw people further into the off-season of Rockaway, where the money drops off a cliff,” Power said. “I was very lucky to be awarded a grant to help pay for the event in Rockaway and that program is made possible by the New York City Artist Corps as well as some support from Rockaway Drinks and Rockaway Brewing Company, as well as the Rockaway Hotel for hosting our after party and the Rockaway Bazaar for hosting the event.” For more information about all ROCK! AWAY! related events, check out www.RockawayMusicFest.com and follow @RockawayMusicFest on Instagram for new updates.

Rockaway Hotel Leads The Hospitality Way Again The Rockaway Hotel is showing people the hospitality way. After a successful job training program in the hospitality industry in April, In Good Company Hospitality and 7G Group are doing it again. The Rockaway Hotel’s free, six-week Hospitality Way Program begins October 25. When they launched the program in April, 25 participants entered the program to learn about opportunities and receive training in the hospitality industry. Six went on to secure jobs in the hospitality industry and four are now employed through The Rockaway Hotel, including in restaurant service, front-desk administration and housekeeping. Now they’re launching the program again to give more people the opportunity to learn, starting October 25. Through hands-on training and real-life applications, participants will be equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to enter and

advance within the hospitality industry. Guest speakers and leaders of the industry will help make participants feel inspired and ready to complete the interview process and ultimately gain employment. At the end of the six-week program, The Hospitality Way will be hosting a job fair filled with local businesses looking to make new hires. The minimum age to participate is 17 and sign-ups can be found at www. thehospitalityway.com Owner/Operators of IGC, Terence Tubridy and Jeff Brosi, both know how powerful the education process can be for the hospitality industry. “For years we have been training and educating the importance of hospitality and entrepreneurship with our employees. We are now excited to help broaden that message with people who are seeking growth for their own careers. We feel education is a form of empowerment and when you add in hospitality. it leads to a recipe of success.”

Series Finale It was like I busted out of the Rockaway State Penitentiary and hurried cross country as if bloodhounds were after me. I did both diddly-squat and doodly-squat this whole pandemic so when I finally saw an opening, I hit the road. I kept looking over my shoulder like I was being trailed, that I’d be called back, forced back to Rockaway. Now, normally, I wouldn’t say anything about being forced back here but even Paradise can get a little old without a little change. Just ask Adam and Eve. They liked Paradise, they just wanted to mix things up a little bit. I get it, you can’t get much better than Rockaway in September because the crowds are gone, and the weather is usually the best of the year. But this September? I was sick of seeing friends and beautiful sunsets over Jamaica Bay. It was time to get out of Dodge. So I did. And now I’m like the guy who insists on showing you family photos and keeps saying, one more. We covered 4,816 miles and we shared the driving. I just happened to drive 4,816 of those miles. People cliff jumping into Lake Superior was cool. An odd-ball sculpture park in the Michigan woods was worth a stop. And another place, in South Dakota, had the work of a chainsaw artist which was insanely good. Did I mention Watkins Glen State Park? It’s a New York gem. Who doesn’t like waterfalls? This place has eighteen legit falls and is so eye-pleasing it made me wonder what a glen is. I’ll save you the google: there’s really no point in trying to figure the difference between a glen, a gorge, a ra-

vine, and a canyon. You could probably throw in gully and gulch, too. Basically, whoever named places got to decide. It’s like lakes. I wondered why some lakes had “lake” first and others had the name of the lake first. Lake George on one hand; Senaca Lake on the other. Lake Michigan on one hand, Crater Lake on the other. It’s not like that with other watery things. It’s the name followed by river; the name followed by bay; etcetera. These are thoughts you have when you’re out on the road. Ya know, if you’re in Rockaway, you just don’t think about glens and ravines. Unless it’s a guy named Glen and a girl named Ravine. Anyway, there were plenty of people at Watkins Glen on a Tuesday in mid-September. Which means it’s probably not a gem during the summer peak season. Don’t take my word for anything. Whether it’s a tourist attraction or an AirBnB, check out online reviews and start with negative reviews first. Added bonus: If you’re homesick, it’ll make you feel like you’re on a Facebook Rockaway page. I’d like to think nobody likes crowds but that’s obviously not true. Even off-season, a lot of places had too many people for this misanthrope. And that’s without hordes of Chinese tourists who were everywhere a couple years back. We stayed at a bunch of AirBnBs which are often better than hotels. And almost always give you more room. One place had a secret door to the bedroom and a Pac-man machine. Another had a pool and a sauna. Once back home, some people didn’t care about where

we went, they just wanted to know about license plates. Well, we spotted 46 states. Apparently, people from Mississippi, Louisiana, and Vermont don’t drive. Hawaii, the holy grail, doesn’t really count, does it? Someone else asked me if the FBI might be looking for me. There was plenty of dead gnat and bug blood on the front of my truck. He didn’t fully believe my explanation and said I better clean it off good. The North Dakota visitor center is really the only thing worth visiting in the state. If you’ve seen the movie Fargo, you know a woodchipper plays a prominent role. To its credit, North Dakota embraces the Hollywood plot point and displays the actual woodchipper in the visitor lobby. And because almost

Chainsaw art

no one goes to North Dakota unless stopping in all 50 states is a bucket list item, they give out certificates, “Saved The Best For Last” knowing people have gone to all other states first. I told the lady giving out the certificates that I had a few more states to go and she looked at me like I was serial killer freak. Maybe it was the way I said I’d come for the woodchipper...

Rockaway’s Seaside Neighbors

Best Pint Of Guinness

By Theresa Racine

For years sea life has been coming back to the Rockaways. Dolphins going from Beach 19th up to Breezy Point and back. A long-time resident seal has a baby on the bay. Sharks shutting down the beach. The most incredible sea animal to see is a humpback whale putting on a show for all those to see right from our own beaches. For the surfers, they are so close they can almost touch these amazing creatures. I was lucky

enough to catch one on camera recently. They are here to stay, I believe, as long as we promise to take care of our ocean. Let's all be reminded that this is their home. Plastic and balloons do not belong in our oceans. Garbage needs to be picked up. When you love nature, I believe nature loves you back. When you look at this amazing creature, give him an ocean he or she can live in, like the rest of the sea animals we love to connect with so much.

***** We don’t visit the Upper West Side or Park Slope often so it’s hard to find a fan of Mayor Bill de Blasio and now sports fans throughout the City have another reason to sneer at the mayor. He’s the first mayor in a hundred years to hold office and not celebrate a major championship by New York teams. Instead of embracing the team of his adopted city, he continued to cheer for the Bostin Red Sox, a tone-deaf move among many of his tone-deaf moves. (Remember he took a boat to Rockaway soon after canceling the ferry? Remember his car was caught speeding soon after talking up Vision Zero. And remember he ran for President?) ***** Wanna hear straight from some of the candidates? The

The lads of Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 21 have done it again. On Tuesday, October 12, the local charitable organization was able to start presenting some nice checks to other community organizations from the money raised from last month’s Irish Festival. On Tuesday, AOH Division 21 presented a generous $15,000 check to St. Camillus Church. Monsignor Richard Ahlemeyer agrees to let the AOH host their Irish Festival in the St. Camillus parking lot each year. In return, the AOH makes the church one of their many groups to pay it forward to with the proceeds from the festival. In a social media post after the donation, St. Camillius-St. Virgilius posted that the money will help them pay for a new roof on Springman Hall. “Thank you to the officers and members of the AOH Division 21 for your generous donation to the parish of St. Camillius-St. Virgilius from the

AOH Division 21 President Mark Edwards says they will also be donating to the VFW once they receive a contact, and to the Knights of Columbus at their next meeting. “It is with great pride that we

On Tuesday, October 12, Community Board 14 (CB14) held its monthly meeting via WebEx. The agenda included continuing Committee Reports from the September CB14 meeting, a presentation brought by NYC Dept. of Design and Construction, and Committee Reports from the Budget and Transportation Committees. The meeting began with a report from the Parks and Public Safety Committee, which was presented by Jose Velez. Velez gave an update regarding the Army Corps of Engineers’ Contract 2 with the Mayor’s Office of Resiliency and Recovery. The goal of the project is to create effective barriers and replenish sand in order to avoid erosion. This project will reinforce dunes by creating approximately 101 ADA crossovers, which will include elevated compliant ramps. A majority of the ADA crossover ramps will be molded ramps intended to make it easier for pedestrians to walk over the dunes. There will be a total of eleven vehicular access points from these ramps, and four of these access points coincide with pedestrian access points to the beach. This project is expected to begin in November. Overall, the board agreed with this project, but concerns were raised regarding the large ADA crossover ramps in the area of Belle Harbor and Neponsit. Some at the meeting suggested these large structures would wind up

in the water like the ramp on Beach 92nd Street. Some members requested that the number of ramps be reduced from the proposed four to two. After heavy discussion, a motion was passed by the board that there should only be two ADA crossover ramps installed: one on Beach 142nd and one on Beach 131st. These crossover ramps will be connected in the middle with mats by the baffle wall. No vehicles are permitted to use the mats, meaning these mats are only for pedestrians, wheelchairs, and all other disability vehicles. Betty Leon followed Velez’s report with an update from the By-Laws Membership Committee’s last meeting which was held in June. Leon stated that there has been a By-Law revision in efforts to unify all the By-Laws in Queens. Among some of the proposed changes included additions to the Executive Board, in order to encourage more involvement from community members. Another proposed revision was that members of the public who are not a part of the Community Board will be permitted to be a part of a Committee. Overall, the majority of the proposed revisions included an emphasis on technology and maintaining a social media presence. Live streaming of meetings and posting meeting agendas regularly on community board websites were two of the provisions that must be implemented as soon as possible. Continued on page 13

COMMUNITY BOARD 14 Continued from Page 12 Next, District Manager, Jonathan Gaska, stated that Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers wrote a letter to Steve Banks of the Dept. of Social Services regarding the homeless shelter at La Quinta. The last week of September, all of the families residing in La Quinta Homeless Shelter were moved out and single men began to fill the beds. In response, Brooks-Powers’ letter included that while the community recognizes the city’s resources are critical and scarce, these resources must be distributed equally throughout the city. She stated that it is unacceptable that the Dept. of Social Services continues to make decisions that impact our communities and requested an immediate cease of La Quinta Homeless Shelter. The meeting continued with an informational presentation by NYC Dept. of Design and Construction regarding the new firehouse at 116-11 Beach

Channel Drive. A member of the architectural design team, Joan Krevlin, presented on the design and current size of the site. This project would transition the former HSBC bank and now FDNY training center on Beach 116th and Beach Channel Drive to the new firehouse utilized by Engine 268/ Ladder 137. This site would allow for additional exit and entry ways for fire trucks, rather than having to back in. The building will be a brown-red brick, referencing the existing firehouse on Beach 116th. There will be a training room, as well as a stress reduction room for the firefighters to ex-

ercise. It is the intention of the architectural design team to install a green roof, but they cannot guarantee that until they receive the city’s funding. In efforts to make this building a community asset, there will be low maintenance, resilient plants and flowers outside and around the building. The new firehouse has been in discussion for a few years. CB14 originally disapproved with the plan for the location, but this was overridden during the ULURP process in 2017. However on Tuesday,, the board overwhelmingly agreed that this was a great asset for the peninsula and a new firehouse is

needed. A motion supporting the plan as presented carried with a total of 26 in favor. The city hopes to break ground on the firehouse next year with completion in 2024. Following the informational presentation, Gerald David presented on behalf of the Budget Committee. He made a motion stating that CB14 add an addition to the FY 2023 Capital and Expense Priority List. This addition would include allotting money to make improvements to the storm sewage system on Beach 36th, 37th, and 38th. This would be the 21st item on the Expense and Priority List. The motion carried. Lastly, David made another motion for the board to accept the latest budget that was submitted to the October meeting. The motion carried, and the budget was approved. Due to time constraints, the last item on the agenda, a Committee Report from the Transportation Committee, did not go forward. This item will be discussed at the November CB14 meeting.

RBNY-18 to Make the Climb in Memory of 9/11 Firefighters By Katie McFadden

On September 11, 2001, hundreds of firefighters bravely entered the World Trade Center in an attempt to traverse its 110 stories, to save whoever they could along the way. That day, 343 firefighters didn’t make it home. In honor of that heroic act, on Sunday, October 17, hundreds of people will head to Belmont Park to climb 2,200 steps, or 110 stories, as part of the National Stair Climb. As a community hard hit by loss that day, Rockaway has a big team heading to Belmont to honor the local firefighters who died on 9/11. In 2015, a group of nine locals participated in the National Stair Climb for the first time. “I was having a conversation about how I wish I could’ve done the Tunnel to Towers run but I can’t run and John Burke, the singer from Wine With Sue and a firefighter from Engine 268/ Ladder 137, mentioned to me that the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) was doing a memorial climb. I jumped at the chance,” team captain Jen Fabry said. Participants in the climb were given a random ID tag to wear in memory of a firefighter who died on 9/11. Local resident Don Sautner opened his registration packet and pulled out a picture of Firefighter John Heffernan. Heffernan was Sautner’s friend. “We got chills and knew that was a sign that we were doing something special and we’re not going to stop as long as we’re able,” Fabry said. The team of nine locals became known as RBNY-18. “We lost 18 firefighters between Rockaway and Breezy, so we thought that was a good way to memorialize them—with RBNY-18,” Fabry said. “For all of us, the people we lost were friends and neighbors—Richie Allen, John Heffernan, etc. These are guys we all grew up with or knew and this climb was a way to ensure they weren’t forgotten.”

Not only is the National Stair Climb a symbolic way to honor the fallen—it’s all for a good cause. The donations collected from the Climb fund the programs provided by the NFFF to support the families of fallen firefighters across the country and the FDNY Counseling Services Unit. “This takes care of the families of those people who have fallen,” Fabry said. “We’re just beginning to see others battle with cancer and other 9/11 related illnesses and this climb raises funds for not only the fallen but those survivors who are only now beginning their battles with 9/11-related illnesses. It’s been 20 years and we’re still losing these people every day and we can’t forget them and their sacrifice.” For firefighter and team member, John Burke, NFFF’s contributions to the FDNY Counseling Services Unit gave him personal motivation to

off to Belmont. The ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer service and then the climbers walk around the track’s stairs for the equivalent of 110 stories. Climbers can go at their own pace, but after they reach the end, everyone can ring a bell in memory of the firefighter that they’re climbing for. “There’s a lot of firefighters that come in full gear and it’s a really rewarding and emotional day. It’s something we’re all really proud to be a part of,” Fabry said. After the hard work of the climb, participants are treated to an after party featuring horse races on the track and more. Non-climbers can also attend the reception for a fee. As last year’s climb was cancelled due to Covid, RBNY-18 is hoping to make this year’s climb a big success. “They lost a lot of fundraising, so we’re hoping this year to help them make up for that loss,” Fabry said. And they’re already on their way. Out of 68 teams, RBNY-18 is the second biggest fundraising team. As we go to press, the team has already surpassed their fundraising goal of $6,000 with $6,490, but every extra dollar helps the cause. “We’ve had people from friends to colleagues to neighbors to complete strangers who have been willing to come forward and donate. Even if it’s $5, every bit helps,” Fabry said. Donations are accepted through Saturday. To donate, head to: https://nfff.akaraisin. com/ui/national/t/RBNY18 Fabry says the team is honored to do this event every year. “It’s only one small way that we can give back to the families of those who we lost and the people who are still fighting every day for their lives,” Fabry said. “They need our support, and it doesn’t seem like a big thing but this is our way of making sure those people are never forgotten.”

support the event. “When I saw that, I knew it was something we had to do. I learned firsthand how important the work they do is. When my wife Colleen was very sick, they made sure they were there for someone to talk to, and they made sure that I had the time I needed to be at the hospital with my wife instead of worrying about work. I knew it was time to give back,” Burke said. “They provide much needed services to our firefighters in need.” As word spread over the years about RBNY-18’s participation, more and more locals have joined in. “We started out with nine people in two cars. This year, we have 35 in a coach bus,” Fabry said. In total, 44 people will be climbing with RBNY-18 on Sunday. Fabry says their day starts For more information about out at Rogers, where owner Mike McMahon generously the National Stair Climb, check hosts them before they head out: nationalstairclimb.org To advertise in THE ROCKAWAY TIMES call 718-634-3030

RT’s Dear Enchantress Gets Published By Dan Guarino

When asked to described her background, Rockaway Times advice columnist ‘Enchantress Shane’ Kulman has more than a few words. “Pre-school teacher, special education therapist. (I’ve been) a stripper. I’ve taught mindfulness and theatre to incarcerated youth. I’m a transformational life coach, an artist, performer, motivational speaker, entrepreneur and…author!” She also holds a Master’s degree in Special Education, is the founder of The Awkward Academy, teaches The Courage Course, aka F*** Your Fears, runs the Relational Embodied Intimacy Facebook group, conducts live videos weekly, leads workshops in beginners burlesque and in helping people climb out of their comfort zones to reach for what they truly desire in life. For the past five years, Kulman’s taken what she has learned from all her experiences to compassionately answer readers’ most perplexing problems in her bi-weekly column, Dear Enchantress. Now she is ready to launch her brand-new book “Dear Enchantress: Letters to an Advice Columnist of the Rockaway Times.” She’ll also be hosting two colorful book signing events where people can get their own personalized copy. The first will be next Thursday, October 21, at the Avoid the Day Bookstore & Café, 99-4 Rock-

away Beach Boulevard, from 6 to 7 p.m. Then she’ll be at the Rockaway Brewing Company, 415 Beach 72nd Street, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 27. “You can also order online,” Kulman says, at www.Shanebkulman.com, and you’ll “get a love note.” Kulman’s book features some of her printed columns as well as some never-before-seen ones. All feature responses given to questions collected from online communities, clients, in person and remote, and random questions Kulman was asked while out and about. When giving advice, she says, “I come from a place of compassion. We’re human. We do things. I only give advice from what I would do. I think it’s all really advice I would give to myself.” What she imparts in her column and in the new book is much in line with how she describes

her first book, “From Anxiety to Ease…The Feminine Way,” also available online. “It’s like a friend in your ear giving you really easy, simple ways to manage anxiety and make you feel it’s possible,” she said. As Kulman explains it, it was a voice in her own ear that led to her Dear Enchantress column. “I was in a program where other women were doing things, taking risks. My coach, Abiola Abrahams, challenged us at a live conference!” At the time she took up Abrahams’ challenge, Kulman says she was feeling “stuck and this was a way to get moving, to get unstuck.” Her opportunity was picture perfect when, in 2017, organizer John Cori asked her to be one the Rockaway Times photo contest judges. Enjoying the experience, she said, “I was feeling quite bold.

I marched up to (RT publisher) Kevin Boyle and told him, ‘I want to write a column for your paper.’ “He said, ‘Okay. Have it in by Monday morning, 10 a.m.’ That was on a late Friday afternoon, and that worked out perfectly. Had Boyle said to turn it in in a month or even two weeks, it might never have happened at all. She explains, “As a procrastination princess, I had no time to think about it, overthink, overanalyze. I just got it done.” Producing an advice column, where readers write in to share what troubles them and seek answers, was a natural fit. She says the guidance she offers and what she teaches really stems from what she has learned. For one thing, “working with the kids with autism taught me everything,” she said. “That deep connection that had compassion, understanding, no judging.” In all the populations she’s worked with, whether in the classroom or on stage, “there are needs and problems to be solved. Seeing those problems unfold and the core needs of people in all different areas really showed me what works and what doesn’t. And what the human psyche gravitates towards,” she said. “And where people want to change and where they want to sit in their drama.” “Educated, uneducated, wealthy, poor, with access to support, no access … …millennials or a 14-year-old in prison on meds…I see the common denominator in all that. And the solutions that carry over and work everywhere. The advice I give is very simple, understandable and doable.” People who write in are “mostly stuck in a relationship or situation where they see no answers. Or they want to take some risks and want to know how.” Her best advice? “Just take an action in the moment. Don’t give yourself time to think about it,” Kulman said. “You’ve taken an action, you don’t know how it will turn out.” But you have ‘unstuck’ yourself and put things in motion. And as Shane Kulman has shown with her new book, “Dear Enchantress…”, that’s advice worth taking.

Sunflowers By Lou Pastina

Sunflowers are by their very definition, sunny, smiling, always reaching up toward the heavens. They are inspirational in that they grow from a tiny seed and grow quickly during the late summer months, proving that we all can grow too. Some breeds of sunflower are gigantic with multiple branches that shoot out and create their own heavenly host of flowers. And sunflowers are

full of their own seeds, so that when they get tired, and begin to bend over back toward the ground, they spread their seeds so that they will be remembered in the coming years with new sprouts. Nothing makes you smile like a field of sunflowers. A field of them is an amazing thing to see, but it only takes one to spread joy and happiness. Sunflowers seem naïve in that they think that they can withstand the elements and still rise up.

But they are not naïve at all. They are aspirational, they strive to be happy believing that a smile can make a difference. Sunflower seeds can be dispersed far and wide sometimes, growing where you least expect them, but they always seem to be where they should be when you need them. Sometimes you see them by the side of the road almost like they were haphazardly thrown about with no rhyme or reason. But there are those that believe that every single one of those sunflowers were placed strategically by God to be just where they are needed most. Sometimes it’s sad at the end of a sunflower season to think that another year has passed. But those thoughts are quickly dashed when you begin to plan out where the next generation of seeds will be planted. Sometimes people are like sunflowers, they shine brightly as if they will be here forever, and then suddenly with the ad-

vent of fall, they leave us. But the memories continue to burn brightly, and the stories continue to be told, and the smiles in the faces of the next generation continue to spread joy and happiness. The most beautiful sunflowers get their picture taken so that their memory will last. Recently Rockaway lost someone special who was a bright, smiling sunflower. She was an inspiration who spread kindness and hope to many. And she did it all armed simply with a smile. She will be missed, but her faith was firmly planted, and the next generation will carry that smile forward, and we will all cherish the memory. God speed Diane Erhard.

Two ADA Ramps Dear Editor, In community meetings, I often hear that the beaches in Belle Harbor will be required to have eight crossover ramps after the new dune is built and that the number can be dropped to four if the ramps are connected. However, that is not what the law says. According to the ABA, the required number of access points for the disabled in Belle Harbor/Neponsit is two, not four or eight. Federal guidelines require no more than one-half mile

Page 19

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2021 of shoreline between access points. Hence, we can meet that requirement with one ramp in the 140s and one ramp in the 130s. The distance to the nearest bus stop (less than ¼ mile) and the distance to public parking (1/8 mile) are non-factors. The requirement is two access points, not four or eight as is commonly stated. Does that mean someone has been lying? No. This happens all the time in government. Someone misinterprets a rule. After this “fact” is repeated and passed along several times, everyone assumes it is the law. Fair access to the beach is both a legal and moral obligation. The Belle Harbor Property Owners Association believes we can enhance accessibility at all 24 beach entrances between Beach 126th and Beach 149th. We are pleased that the government agencies are committed to working with us to refine the plan. Paul King Reasons To Vote Dear Editor –

I just read, former Chief of Transit, Joe Fox’s recent Letter to the Editor (10-7-14) regarding the importance of voting on November 2 and to VOTE for candidates who will turn our city around such as Joann Ariola (New York City Council District 32) and others like her. I’d like to add that this election is especially important as there are five New York State constitutional amendments on the ballot. Proposals 1, 3, and 4 deal with voting. BALLOT PROPOSALS: 1). AN AMENDMENT Amending the Apportionment and Redistricting Process; 2). AN AMENDMENT Right to clean air, clean water, and a helpful environment; 3). AN AMENDMENT Eliminating Ten-DayAdvance Voter Registration Requirement; 4). AN AMENDMENT Authorizing No-Excuse Absentee Ballot Voting; 5). AN AMENDMENT Increasing the Jurisdiction of the New York City civil court. I wonder why such important proposals are put on a ballot in an off-year election with

no statewide races, especially when low voter turnout is expected. Have your voice heard - Vote. Otherwise, don’t complain. Fran Stathis Change Needed Dear Editor: Every four or two years, we face a campaign season full of name calling and false information. Though the candidates that appear on the ballot may be different, they usually represent an establishment that rejects change in every form. I know it is long past due that Rockaway gets the change in leadership that it so desperately deserves. This pandemic has created problems that we have never seen before and these problems deserve new answers, not the usual answers. Franklin Roosevelt once said, “It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.” Rockaway deserves transformational answers to Continued on page 32

Getting Real with Rockaway’s Real Estate Agents MAUREEN WALSH OF WALSH PROPERTIES Story and Photos By Dan Guarino

From her office overlooking Beach 116th’s beach block, Maureen Walsh reflects that as of February 2022, she will celebrate 19 years as a real estate broker. “I’m almost at the 20-year mark,” she says, adding that she was a licensed real estate agent for six years before that. One thing she notes she’s seen in that time is that real estate changes lives. “Early in my career I had a house. It was an estate, but one of the children was really holding out on selling. He lived in it. He was shooting me daggers at the closing, because he had to move.” But that was at the closing. “Years later I ran into him. He told me, ‘You selling that house was the best thing that happened to me. There was no more living in Mom’s place. I had to get out on my own. I even met someone really nice!” Another time, she recalls, there was a woman whose mother was 70 years old and had never owned a house. With older neighbors and friends moving to Florida, her daughter asked her, ‘Are you crazy?’ when her mom announced what she wanted to do. The woman said it was a dream to own her own home. “She lived in, and loved, that Rockaway home for 25 years. Her husband lived there,” Walsh recalls. “You should always do what you want, because you never know. I started Walsh Properties in 2003. Before that I worked for a wonderful person, Geraldine Frazer.” And before that, it wasn’t a different path entirely. “Originally I was in corporate America. Then I was fortunate enough to be a stay-at-home mom for the first 17 years of my son’s life.” When it was time to go back to work, Walsh was a substitute teacher in local schools and also dabbled in real estate.

“But you really have to commit to be truly successful.” So real estate it was. Since then, she’s worked with her sister and with her daughter. “We’re out and about. Believe it or not, I get a lot of my listings while working out in my garden!” Real estate, she says, also changes neighborhoods. “One of the reasons I went into real estate was because of someone I really respect, Mary Leahy, who originally came from Ireland,” she said. Walsh describes Leahy, and local-based lawyer Ann Barbera, as forces of nature. As she tells it, Rockaway hit a steep decline in the 1990s, with numerous properties being bought up by landlords who wanted an easy profit and couldn’t care

less about the area. The home the Walshes bought on Beach 121st Street, for instance, was originally an SRO littered with crack vials and needles. “It was a crack house,” Walsh said. Even after they took it over, there was still a squatter living in two rooms packed to the ceiling with garbage and debris, and that stank of cat urine. When police were eventually called to evict him, the responding officer said, “I never saw anything this bad.” Leahy and Barbera took Rockaway’s fight right up the neglectful landlords’ doors, leading protests at their very posh homes in New Jersey and upstate New York. “They told them, ‘Clean up your slums!’ They didn’t like that.”

Leahy’s constant pressure got many to soon start cleaning up their act. Barbera’s legal actions got several more to relinquish their properties. “That’s when things began to change in Rockaway and flourish,” Walsh says. “People say, ‘Somebody should do something.’ I always say, ‘Let that somebody be you!” Walsh knows how one or two people who care can lift a neighborhood. She also knows how one house can lift up a block. “You can always tell a house that’s loved. It shows there’s life there.” That, too, she says is the difference homeowners and simply investors. “I think we are at the top of the market right now. A lot of people are getting into it. It’s very competitive. But, she says, “a local realtor will give you the straight scoop. One thing about being in your own business, you really have to distinguish yourself. Think outside the box. Sometimes you have to re-invent. And real estate is all about personal relationships. How comfortable you feel with the person.” That’s one thing that hasn’t changed. As she is out and about in Rockaway, she is ready to help her clients with whatever their needs and situations might be. “I’ve never sold a house sitting in an office,” she says. And that hasn’t changed either. Walsh Properties is located at 177 Beach 116th Street. For more info, check out www. walshpropertiesinc.com or call 718-945-2212.

SOME USEFUL LINGO, ETC. There are many abbreviations used in the real estate industry. Here are a few useful ones: WBFP = wood burning fireplace; FDR = formal dining room; EIK = eat-in kitchen; B/Y = backyard; GBFP = gas burning fireplace; FLR = formal living room (at least three walls); CHC = center hall colonial (staircase in the middle of the house); SHC = side hall colonial (staircase off to one side); Needs TLC = tender loving care (i.e., needs work); W/D = washer dryer; H/W = hardwood floors; CAC = central air conditioning; MBR = master bedroom; PVT = usu-

ally referring to private driveway. Some other thoughts: Be aware – if an advertisement does not specify that the house has a private driveway, then there is a chance that it has a shared driveway. If a house is advertised with WATER VIEWS, then there is a good chance that it has bay views and NOT ocean views. If a house is in “mint” condition, does it need an inspection before purchase? The answer is almost always “yes” – it could be the best few hundred dollars you have ever spent. Call me. Love, Robin.

A NEW ENERGY Just started getting into reading, watching interviews and offerings by Dr. Joe Dispenza. I had before but it didn’t resonate as much as it does now. And I realize I experienced one of his major illuminations over two years ago. Without realizing it, I put into practice one of his core teachings: clear intention + elevated emotions = a new energy. (From “Becoming Supernatural) At the time, I really wanted to make a change in my life for increased good health and well-being. I just couldn’t quite figure out how to turn over

that new leaf or turn the switch or however you describe it. But I had the clear intention and I imagined how I would feel and how my life would change. One evening at an event that I would not normally go to, two people “presented” themselves to me with their individual present success stories—having made the change I wanted to make. I was astonished. What were the chances? I was drawn to go to the event, and I ran into two people there who confirmed to me that I could do what I set my inten-

tion to do. So, after a couple of days, it clicked, and my intention and good feelings set toward the future allowed me to make a shift. The energy created by those things let it happen. I had the aha moment reading the above-mentioned book now. So that’s what happened! I have often said settling in before guiding yoga classes, to set intentions because energy follows intention. I experienced this many times in small ways throughout my life. When we take in little wishes into our hearts, they manifest—although it may not be in the timeframe we want and in the way we want. Dr. Joe studies this phenomenon from a scientific perspective and he and his team create countless studies to study the brain, the heart and energy fields. What I have experienced can be explained… does that matter to me? Well, yes, and the reason it does is because it has opened up a new world: the absolutely amazing world of the human body: the human brain, the human heart,

the human nervous system. There is so much more to his revelations, and as I said, I’m just getting into it. Another profound idea that he expounded upon in an interview I viewed on Gaia: affirmations alone don’t work. We can keep on saying a thought over and over again, but it is not until we embody it, that it can become a reality. What does it mean to embody something? I understand it to mean to become that something and the way for me for that to happen is to drop into my heart space letting my body affirm my wish—then my brain puts it into words. Whether you come to your “new energy” through science, spiritual study, meditation or a combination of all, the sum is oneness —we are all different, but we are all the same, and we all have the potential to live in joy, gratitude, love and peace. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

elect Felicia Singh our next City Councilor. Felicia’s Plan will bring the community and city agencies together to govern and create an integrated climate and environmental resilience plan. When Felicia thinks climate, she thinks jobs. She wants to build new infrastructure and retrofit existing structures to protect Rockaway. This will require the creation of many new, good paying, union jobs. We must also center a just transition--ensuring that the communities that have been harmed the most by climate catastrophe are the first to benefit from our new economy. To those of you who are still undecided on who to vote for, know this. Felicia Singh will fight with every muscle, with every bone, with every word to move Rockaway and District 32 forward. She is devoted to the fight of creating climate resilience and she will not stop until we get what we deserve. Let’s lead with courage and elect Felicia Singh our next representative on the city council. Jonathan Lazo

our problems. We are facing a climate threat that threatens every single person on our peninsula. If you take a walk on the boardwalk and go down to Beach 92nd, you will see the water reaching the ramp that goes down to the beach. How much longer until the water reaches over the boardwalk? How much longer until it's too late to act? A Regional Plan Association, City Lab report says by 2100 our peninsula will be underwater. This can result in 12,000 people in public housing displaced, 20% of our area's power generated capacity will be diminished, and 203,000 New Yorkers will be impacted overall. If you think because this won’t impact you in your life, you must think about the impact in the lives of your children and your future grandchildren. This decision to protect our community from the climate threat comes in November. We must elect the candidate with a plan for resilience. We must

Seeking: Winter Cuddles Dear Enchantress, I am so annoyed, I joined Tinder and I never meet anyone. I get to the point where I judge them as dumb or something, and then I tune out. I think my photos are nice, and I think I am super clear in what I want and don't want. And here is what I wrote: "I am not looking for someone who has kids, or someone that is recently divorced or out of a long-term relationship. I am young and want some-

thing that feels good, don't be too nice. “I eventually want a LTR but for now let's just meet and be friends. Also please have a car, I live far from NYC and won't travel into the city unless I know you." I have read many books on dating and listen to Youtubes, and to be honest, I feel lost, and I don't know what to do. I DO NOT want to spend another winter alone. Thanks in advance. And congrats on your book! I already ordered my copy!

Dear Woman on a Mission, WOAH! Big energy here. While I think that bold energy is always good, your writing on your profile feels super aggressive. I am excited about refining it to be assertive, there is a big difference, and many women fly on one or the other. Confusing aggressiveness and assertiveness is common! So, fear not! Enchantress Shane to the rescue. Here is an updated version. Use it and thank me later. Feel free to tweak. The biggest advice here?? Speak in terms of WHAT YOU DO WANT! It's easier to digest and the tone is way different. Right now, I read this like you want a fight! AND you may still attract someone, but most likely he'll piss you off. "I am seeking a man that enjoys traveling out to the beach and is free from past baggage that gets in the way of him traveling to the beach (where I live). I am not ready to consider being a mom just yet, so please if you have children, keep scrolling. Also, I like a man who is friendly, but not a pushover, don't be

The Rockaway Times afraid to tell me what you want. Lastly, I dream of a long-term relationship, but I am in no rush, it's more important we get along and have fun." You get the idea. What's that updated version like? Next, I hear you about looking for a cuddle partner during the winter. I say audaciously: get a local homie for that. I wish you all the best! Love, Enchantress Shane To ask Enchantress Shane your question, email her at Supp or t@enchantedeb o diment.com AND Dear Enchantress is now a published book, grab your copy or show up at a local book signing with Shane!

By Peter Galvin, MD

Cardiac Rehabilitation Cardiac rehabilitation is a carefully planned program that combines supervised physical activity, weight management, and lifestyle modification to help people with heart disease live healthier and longer lives. The goals of cardiac rehabilitation are to regain strength and improved exercise endurance, prepare for a return to work or activities of daily living, decrease symptoms (such as chest pain and shortness of breath), optimize cardiac risk factors, and help people live longer by preventing worsening of heart disease and life-threatening events, for example heart attacks.

Many patients begin cardiac rehabilitation following a hospital stay for a heart-related illness or procedure, such as a heart attack in the last 12 months, coronary angioplasty (using a catheter with a balloon to open a blocked artery) or coronary stenting (using a tube called a stent after angioplasty to keep the artery open), coronary artery bypass surgery, heart valve repair or replacement, heart or heart-lung transplant, current stable angina, stable heart failure, and peripheral arterial disease. As cardiac rehab may be unsafe for persons with certain medical conditions, a doctor’s order is required to start it.

Cardiac rehab is usually administered in three phases: • Phase 1 begins in the hospital where patients are encouraged to perform range-of-motion exercises, sit in a chair, or take walks around their room or hospital floors while still an inpatient. • Phase 2 is the early outpatient stage. After discharge from the hospital, patients can participate in supervised exercise programs where heart rhythm, heart rate, blood pressure, and symptoms are monitored. Exercise in phase 2 includes low-impact aerobic exercises such as walking, recumbent training, and cycling and strength training and typically has a five to 10 minutes warm up period, a 30-to-45-minute exercise period, and a cooldown period. Phase 2 also has educational sessions to address nutrition, smoking, blood sugar control, managing medications for blood pressure and cholesterol, and achieving and keeping a healthy weight. Screening for depression with referral for psychological care is also in-

cluded. Some medical centers offer a more intensive lifestyle program as well (intensive cardiac rehab). Medicare covers up to 36 sessions (72 for intensive rehab). Participants generally attend in-person sessions two or three times a week for 12 to 18 weeks. • Phase 3 is the late outpatient stage. After completing phase 2, patients may choose to continue with weekly exercise or educational sessions. This phase in unmonitored and generally is not covered by Medicare. Some of the potential benefits of cardiac rehab include decreased risk of death from a heart-related illness, decreased hospitalizations, decreased rates of depression, decreased symptoms such as chest pain and fatigue, and improved physical conditioning, exercise tolerance, and quality of life. These students have stayed with the training for several years, and their commitment has certainly paid off with their respective new ranks. The testing was grueling, taking three consecutive Saturdays. First was Kata (forms) with all the variations and demonstrating knowledge of 14 forms and their applications. Next was weapons component Comprising 7 weapons kata

and the fighting elements built into each weapon. This is known as Kumi(fighting). Finally, the last part, which everyone was anticipating, the sparring. This was composed of self-defense situations, judo throws and multiple attackers. Board breaking, and finally Round Robin Kumite (sparring)..All the students excelled and the parents were very proud of the students. Rinse fish in cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Lightly season with salt and pepper. Brush the top of each fillet with mustard and mayonnaise mixture (thicker is better). Place fish into breadcrumb mixture and press firmly to build a heavy crust onto the mustard mixture. Arrange fish in a baking dish with crumbled side facing up and coat liberally with vegetable oil spray. Bake until fish is golden brown 12-15 minutes or internal temperature reaches 125 degrees in center.

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard

Ableism? Autism caregivers—how many of us play our violins about how an autism diagnosis changed the “What to Expect When You are Expecting…” trajectory of our lives? Folks, ashamedly I have to put my hand up. Here is Kami, a vocal community autism advocate, admitting that no—autism does not rock—oftentimes it actually sucks! In the past few months, my nonverbal daughter with autism who is about to be 13 this Saturday!, has increasingly been stoking an uncontrollable firestorm of defiant behavior, and yes, I started to burnout in my own abyss of self-pity and isolation. (Folks, my Soa could be as destructive as Vulcan, god of crafting and fire!). However, some recent discoveries prompted me to reflect on my own chutzpah with self to instead learn from my daughter and her peers—who like the rainbow, reflects different hues that are different, but not muted. Thus, the introduction to my assertion that though sometimes autism is daunting, as parents and caregivers, most of us are not ableist. Also searching for therapies and other resources for our children—does not mean we’re trying to cure autism—we’re just exploring every possible avenue for them to live life to the fullest—wherever they are on the spectrum. What is ableism? According to academics, (Castañeda & Peters, 2000): “Ableism is a form of discrimination

or prejudice against individuals with physical, mental, or developmental disabilities that is characterized by the belief that these individuals need to be fixed or cannot function as full members of society.” Here is the question. Does exploring therapies to help your child mean that you are an ableist? For example, regarding ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis, a type of therapy focusing on improving social skills, communication, reading, and academics as well as adaptive learning skills, such as fine motor dexterity, hygiene, grooming, domestic capabilities, punctuality, and job competence)—I was particularly touched by the following from Eileen Lamb, founder of The Autism Cafe, who shared the ups and downs of raising a severely autistic child while being on the spectrum herself : “An autistic child grows up in a world comprised almost completely of neurotypical people, and they have to learn how to function within it… The biggest criticism about ABA therapy is ableism, discrimination in favor of able-bodied people. I don’t agree that ABA therapy is ableist. You can help someone without changing who they are. Charlie (her son) isn’t in ABA therapy because we want him to be normal. We want him to be safe, independent, and to learn to communicate, to decrease his, and yes, our frustration… I’m not trying

to ‘fix’ Charlie’s autism.” This made me think. Imagine growing up in a world where you were so different that you felt like you were in a fishbowl, lovingly sheltered, but misunderstood and largely ignored? Currently Soa is in a private school centered around Floortime (also known as DIRFloortime), an intervention used to promote development through play. Coming from a strict Catholic school background with some experiences in NYC’s public education system, I was of the opinion that the more discipline, the more disciplined the child. However, Soa’s dad disagreed. He feels that Soa learns better through unstructured play. The point is as parents, whether we agree or disagree, all we can do is explore every passage. We’re not trying to cure what makes our child different—but to help them independently not just manage the daily routines of life, but to excel at their

God-given purpose. And I’m not just talking about brushing one’s teeth, getting dressed and tying shoelaces. In a telling email interaction with a self-described autistic adult, I learned, “We're really only informed by disabled and autistic young people and adults.” Folks, we’re all in this together—and I’m learning from adult autistics, “O.G.” parents who’ve been there, done that and wrote the book, and my own daughter. Join Rockaway Beach Autism Families at our next meeting on Thursday, October 21st, 7p.m. at Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th Street). Plus, come costumed as your favorite super hero at our Halloween Treasure Hunt on Beach 97th on Sunday, October 31st, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. For more info, visit Rockaway Beach Autism Families on Facebook/Instagram, or email: kami@rockawaybeachautismfamilies. org

Wrestle Talk PRO WRESTLING NEWS By Eric Jayden

This week, we are following up on rumors and reports about former WWE superstar Bray Wyatt possibly joining All Elite Wrestling (AEW). In a recent interview, AEW owner Tony Khan stated that he has not been involved in direct talks with the former WWE superstar even though he knows him on a personal level. Reports are still around about IMPACT Wrestling having a very strong interest in signing Bray Wyatt whose real name is Windham Rotunda. At this point, where Bray Wyatt may end up is anyone's call but whoever signs him will have a top quality superstar on their roster. Speaking of AEW, reports are coming in that ticket sales are very low for this Friday's Rampage Show in Miami, Florida. The reason for this could be that Miami, Florida in itself

has been a very hard location to draw historically. But AEW promises to deliver a top-notch show for all the fans in attendance. On the October 11 edition of Monday Night Raw, Drew McIntyre suffered a deep cut to his forehead while in a Tag Team Match with Big E against

the USO's. Apparently the injury took place while he exchanged elbows shots with Big E. Early reports indicated that Drew will be ok and that he won't miss any scheduled shows. Drew McIntyre is scheduled to face off against Big E for the WWE Championship at the Crown Jewel PPV on

October 21, 2021. The Question of the Week comes from Alex R. in Rockaway Beach, and he asked "Is AEW going to hire every former WWE wrestler? Doesn't that make them a clone of the WWE? Hey Alex, in my opinion it doesn’t. WWE's loss is another promotion’s gain. When the WWE is releasing guys like Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman, in my book that's a major waste of talent and any other company will be lucky to quickly sign up any talent with star power that the WWE releases. If another company can sign up a major talent and properly use them, well, that's a Win-Win in my book. Thank you all for sending in all your questions into eavil183@yahoo.com. Follow me on Facebook @ericjayden, on Twitter @followthebadguy and on Instagram @badguysexiness. Have a great week!
