AUTO DEALER CONTINUES SANDY RELIEF EFFORTS BY PROVIDING $1,000.00 VOUCHERS. Marquis Auto Of Queens Continues To Support Our Community By Providing Discounts To Those Affected By Superstorm Sandy.

O

ctober marks the three-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy. Our neighborhoods were devastated. Most of us were left with damage to our homes and significant collateral damage which became apparent in the days and weeks that followed. One local business owner Joseph DiBenedetto continues to support all communities affected by Sandy. Queens resident, Joseph DiBenedetto, is a prominent attorney and owner of Marquis Auto of Queens – one of the largest leasing companies in New York with over 20 years of experience in the automotive industry. On this 3-year anniversary, DiBenedetto pledges to continue to provide support to our community by issuing a one thousand dollar ($1,000.00) voucher redeemable against any vehicle lease, fi nance or purchase. The Queens location has been open a little over two years and DiBenedetto attributes Sandy as a main reason for its formation. “Like many others, I and most of our staff lived through Sandy. I had four feet of water in my home and I lost two automobiles. My story isn’t unique. All of my neighbors were in the same position as me. We all wanted a sense of normalcy and tried to piece our lives together as quickly as possible. Most

rushed to purchase or lease automobiles out of necessity and in the process overpaid. It was upsetting to see a community in need taken advantage of and so I decided to open a Queens-based office.” “These terrible leases are set to expire in the upcoming months and my office is dedicated to providing exceptional service and pricing to all of our customers. Our voucher of $1,000.00 marks our continued commitment to rebuilding all communities damaged by Sandy. Redeeming the voucher is simple. During your initial call or visit to our office, simply inform us that you wish to redeem your voucher and we will apply a $1,000.00 credit. It’s that easy.” Marquis Auto of Queens offers all makes and models for less than dealerships and their competitors. They have built a reputation on exceptional service and pricing. Like your trusted stock broker and real estate agent, Marquis Auto of Queens brokers the best deal on the automobile of your choice. They purchase automobiles directly from a manufacturer’s fleet department, bypassing dealerships, and pass the savings on to their customers. Given their vast network of fleet departments, Marquis Auto of Queens has the ability to locate hard-to-fi nd automobiles. They also specialize in helping customers get out of their bad leases. Their white-glove service also includes free delivery to your home or business.

Ferry, Parks & Gripes at Community Board By Katie McFadden

The Economic Development Corporation was invited to Tuesday’s Community Board 14 meeting to provide updates on the citywide ferry service, but left without providing much new information. Despite pleas for a quicker arrival, James Wong, Director of Ferries for the EDC, said the Rockaway ferry still isn’t coming until Spring 2017. “We want to make sure we have a safe ferry system. We’re trying to move quickly, but we’re not cutting corners,” Wong said. He explained that the City was able to establish the emergency ferry service after Sandy quickly since the emergency status didn’t require environmental review, community feedback and permitting that is necessary for the large-scale citywide ferry service that will include routes from Rockaway, South Brooklyn and Astoria in 2017 and Soundview and the Lower East Side in 2018, in addition to the current East River ferry service. The service would run seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wong said the Rockaway ferry landing will return to Beach 108th Street during its 2017 launch.

“We’re going back to 108 because we know we can do it in the short run. The fastest thing to do is to go where we were,” he said, adding that the EDC is in positive discussions with National Grid to utilize the parking area at Beach 108th. However, the Beach 108th landing isn’t accessible to everyone. To address this, the EDC has included a requirement for bus shuttle service from operators. To ensure that travel times are worthwhile, the current shuttle bus plan would extend to Jacob Riis Park on the west end and Beach 67th Street on the east end, with a few pickups on the north to include a larger radius at Beach 67th Street. Several board members expressed dismay at the fact that the current plan ignores the east end and Broad Channel. Wong said the current shuttle plans are conceptual. “We will try to work more with the community to see where the shuttle routes should be going,” he said, but added that a ferry may not be the best solution for the east. “We’re excited for this service, but we don’t want to sell a 150 passenger ferry as a solution for all problems. It’s not the kind of service that can serve all of Rockaway’s transportation

problems,” he said. The ferry will cost $2.75 per ride; however, it won’t be part of the Metrocard system. “We talked with the MTA and the Metrocard system is over 20 years old and is being phased out. It was recommended that we don’t invest in a system that may be obsolete in three-to-five years,” Wong said. For those who utilize the ferry, that means commuters will have to pay an additional fare to transfer to a bus or train if going anywhere besides Pier 11 or 34th Street. The $55 million citywide ferry project will include 21 landings across the system, with 10 new, five reconfigured and the six already in place. The ferry landings will be on a barge and Wong says they’ll be nicer than the temporary facility used for the emergency ferry service. “The landings will have new shelters with canopies, a windscreen, glass enclosures and all customer amenities like ticketing will take place on the barge in areas that are protected by the elements.” Wong announced that the $15 million earmarked by Anthony Weiner for ferry service about a decade ago will finally be go-

ing to use. “With the $15 million, we’ll look at alternative ferry facility possibilities like at Beach 84th Street. We’ll conduct a planning study that will lead to further construction,” Wong said, adding that much of that study would focus on areas west of the A train bridge, as it was determined that the height of the bridge presents limitations and safety concerns, preventing a service from going further east. EDC is currently at the stage of selecting a ferry operator, which Wong said they’ll select at the end of the year or early next year. Public comments for the environmental review of the system were closed on October 8, but Wong says the public will have an opportunity to comment before a final Environmental Impact Statement is made. In the meantime, the EDC is holding meetings across the city to gather community feedback throughout the process. See NYCEDC.com/ferry-info for information on meetings, the process and review documents. Local politicians like Senator James Sanders and Councilman Eric Ulrich were on hand to provide updates. Sanders said he is fighting to make sure Rockaway Continued on page 18

To celebrate its 100th anniversary, St. Virgilius Church in Broad Channel has a couple of special events planned. Roberta Nobleman, an author and actress, has written a short play on the person of St. Virgilius. The first part will deal with the Irish roots of the saint then his Benedictine experience and his ministry as Bishop. The final part will deal with the church of St. Virgilius in Broad Channel. Nobleman will perform in St. Virgilius Church following the 4 p.m. Mass on Saturday, October 17 and the 10 a.m. Mass on Sunday, October 18. The homily will be shortened so as not to run too long. This production is free and all are invited. Following the Mass on Sunday there will be a reception in the American Legion Hall. Tickets are $35.00 per person and may be purchased at the St. Camillus Rectory during office hours. At the reception a video history of St. Virgilius prepared by Sister Ann will be shown. During November, the video will be screened in the church.

Rumble Columbus Day passed and it was good to see everyone acknowledging St. Brendan’s discovery of America. Although some parade in the city focused on that other guy. All because the Irish like to downplay accomplishments, you know. Historians know it went like this: someone asked St. Brendan if he discovered America and it was like asking a fireman if he made a rescue. He’d say nah, I didn’t do anything – you should talk to some other guy. And that guy would say it was somebody else, go talk to

him. Pretty soon a thousand years would go by and someone would say it was that Italian guy, Chris Columbus - who was only too eager to take the credit. hey, paisans, I’m only kidding. The Irish and Italian stuff was part of growing up in Brooklyn. Paul Moses, a Nazareth grad and a professor at Brooklyn College, has written a book, An Unlikely Union: The Love-Hate Story of New York’s Irish and Italians (Hey Paul, thanks, the Irish get top billing!). It’s a historical and often colorful account of how the two groups came to

America only to become rivals “in the Catholic church, on the waterfront, at construction sites, and in the streets.” It’s not often you come across a book with Mother Cabrini and Frank Sinatra. And there’s Bing Crosby, Tammany Hall and Mayors LaGuardia and Jimmy Walker, too. Immigration is a hot button issue these days and I’m not sure if our melting pot will boil over but the Irish and Italians eventually worked things out so maybe there’s hope. It’s gone now as far as I can tell but if you grew up in the 60s or 70s vestiges of the old rivalry still existed. Moses starts his book by recalling how when kids were walking home from school somebody would yell out “rumble” (usually around St. Patrick’s Day). And then the Irish and Italian kids would go at it. It was mostly play wrestling, certainly nothing that would’ve earned more than 10 views on YouTube. As I write, I realize the melting pot wasn’t quite a full-fledged stew. In Brooklyn (and I’m sure elsewhere) we were far more segregated than we ever knew. To my mind, everyone was either Irish or Italian. Kids with last names like Von Sauers and Florkowski had to pick a side, Irish or Italian. We’d ride to my grandmother’s

house in Greenpoint down Rogers Avenue so I knew there were black neighborhoods. And I saw the Hasidim in Williamsburg. But I had no idea Brooklyn was home to so many Jews. I think Brooklyn had more Jews than Israel for a while. But we had no clue. That’s how it was. You went to school with families of similar backgrounds and there were so many kids on your block there was no point in going beyond the neighborhood boundaries. I think I knew a total of one other kid who was a “Protestant.” (I didn’t know what denomination). He was quite exotic. There were all these other people and still I thought you had to be Irish or Italian or at least “half and half” which could be stretched a bit. Half and half could mean you had a great grandmother who was onefourth one or the other. That was then. Now, I gotta go get a bagel from Muhammad’s and then pick up some kielbasa at the Polish place on the Boulevard. Come to think of it, I’ve got a whole list. I’ve gotta get milk from the Korean’s and meet a friend for lunch at the Japanese place on 116th. And then it’s either Thai or Uzbek for dinner. Or BBQ. It’s hard to start a rumble these days.

Well, we never saw anybody ever go in there. Sleepy’s mattress store on Beach 116th and Beach Channel Drive will be closing its doors in November. The landlord has placed a “For Rent” sign on the 5,000 square foot space. ***** The government-sponsored mortgage company, Freddie Mac, makes capital available to lenders to increase liquidity and make home buying easier. Freddie also forecloses and then sells houses as well. They’ve got a “home finder” search on their website. If you type in a zip code you’ll be given a list of available homes. Just don’t type in 11693 (Rockaway Beach and Broad Channel) unless you want to buy something in Spain. The Freddie Mac search engine zooms in on Seville, Spain. At the current time, there are no listings in Seville. Thanks to Lauren Tara LaCapra, a financial editor at Fusion, for the tip. ***** Patrick McGovern tells us we

shouldn’t have given him credit for the St. Virgilius 100th Anniversary article in last week’s paper. He said he just compiled a lot of the stuff from online sources and that Father Richard Ahlemeyer was a main contributor as well. Well, good job, to all! As a reminder, the anniversary is being celebrated with a mass at noon on October 18 at St. Virgilius in Broad Channel followed by a reception at the American Legion Hall. Call 718-634-8229 for tickets and info. ***** Congratulations to the 2015 “Hibernian of the Year” Brendan Jones of Division 21 Rockaway Beach/ Breezy Point, NY. Brendan will be honored Saturday night at the Silver Gull. ***** We got a sneak peek at the Rockaway Beach Golf Club which should open within a couple of weeks on Beach 100th Street. And all we can say is: wow. The place has three virtual golf simulators, which allow

golfers to use full swings with real clubs and golf balls. The big screens depict actual golf courses from around the globe. There’s a beautiful lounge area and bar as well. We think golfers and school groups will eat this place up. The Stathis boys (Steve and son, Christian) who run Boarders Surf Shop and Pat Hayden are the guys behind this fun idea. ***** October means getting in a little shape before the holidays. And you can lose weight and gain some goodies. Gliders at 114-04 Beach Channel and CROM at Beach 92nd are offering specials. Gliders is having a Biggest Loser competition involving teams. You can lose pounds and gain some money with cash prizes. At CROM you can win free classes or a facial at Nicole Frontera Beauty. ***** You might soon see a lot of new cars around Rockaway. A lot of people had to lease cars after Sandy and those three-year lease deals will be expiring. If you’re in the market, keep our car advertisers in mind. ***** A football game between Far Rockaway and Bryant High School was declared over when gunshots rang out during halftime. The shots were fired on nearby Cornaga Avenue, not on school grounds. Concerned for everyone’s safety, coaches wisely called the game at halftime with

Bryant getting a 16-0 win. ***** A big congrats goes out to Team Kevin, a group formed to raise money for pancreatic cancer research. Named in honor of the late and much loved Kevin Kearney, the group has raised more than $35,000. Members will run in the upcoming NYC Marathon. ***** Geoff Rawling, one of the artists who helped make Fort Tilden such a scary treat on Halloween, is putting his touch on Playland Motel. There’ll be a kids-friendly set up followed by adult fun. We’ll have a write-up on it soon. With Halloween on a Saturday this year, there should be lots of spooky fun around town. ***** Former City Councilman Tom Ognibene died Monday at the age of 71. In 2014, there were rumors that Ognibene would challenge Joe Addabbo for his NY State Senate seat. He never did. Upon the news of his death, Eric Ulrich released a statement: “Tom Ognibene was like a 2nd father to me and I am deeply saddened by his passing. He was my pillar of strength and most trusted friend. Undoubtedly, I would not have been elected to public office had it not been for Tom’s constant encouragement, help and guidance.”

Indie Living MAC DEMARCO’S HOUSE BY THE WATER By Dylan Watton

Mac DeMarco discovered Rockaway the way so many others since 1977 have. “Probably from the Ramones song, I think,” he said. DeMarco is a star in the indie-rock scene and prior to the recording of his most recent album Another One, he began looking for a new home base. “I was in Bushwick for a little bit but I didn’t even know there was a beach in NY,” he said. “I have some friends that live even further down on Beach 25th Street. They live in this house called the Red Light District and they do shows there. And they were like, ‘We live in Rockaway and it’s cheap to live down there.’ I was looking up houses last fall and I looked on Craigslist. I just wanted to rent straight from an owner. I wanted a house so I could play drums and stuff. Honestly the house that I’m living in now, I feel right at home.” DeMarco moved in to the house last fall. As any Rockaway resident can relate to, he began to feel the doldrums of winter in a beachfront community. So on the last track of Another One entitled “My House by the Water,” the sound of soft

rushing water bumping up against rocks on Jamaica Bay is combined with a lush, dreamlike, somewhatout-of-tune guitar melody. At the end of the track, a seemingly disembodied voice says “6802 Bayfield Ave. Arverne, NY. Stop on by. I’ll make you a cup of coffee. See you later.” “I think I did that because I recorded the album before the summertime,” DeMarco explained regarding his decision to put his address at the end of a commercially released album. “And Rockaway in the winter is very lonely, so I had this nobody-ever-comes-andvisits-me feeling. Summer comes

and everybody goes to the beach like all the time!” In short order, DeMarco had scores of young people coming to his front door looking for a cup of coffee, to talk to a musician to admire, or just going on an adventure. “I don’t re-

ally know what I was thinking,” he said retrospectively. “When I do albums I’m in a very personal, meditative, very alone-time style space. I wasn’t really thinking about how there’s a lot of people that listen Continued on next page

to my music. So I put it on as this nice little thing but then the press picked it up and it got a little out of hand.” With Another One debuting at Number 25 on the Billboard charts, it’s no wonder that things got out of hand. DeMarco was raised in Edmonton, Alberta in a “pretty standard, small city kind of upbringing.” He began getting into the music scene at his high school and moved to Vancouver in 2008 before heading to Montreal in 2011. In 2012, he released an EP entitled Rock and Roll Night Club, which was swiftly followed by the full-length LP 2. 2014’s Salad Days came next before earlier this year he released Another One and its instrumental counterpart Some Other Ones. All the while he has kept up a busy touring schedule. “I love the Yellow Magic Orchestra, they’re like the Beatles of Japan,” he said of his influences. “I love all of their offshoots and all of their styles. Ambient, orchestral, haven’t found anything I’m not intrigued by from them.” He also cited Steely Dan, Harry Nilsson, The Kinks, and Jonathan Richmond. His music typically combines his mellow, mid-range voice with a bright and airy “interweaving” guitar tone. “I used to be a no-effects, crank the amp up and play guy,” he said of his unique tone. “It’s partially the crappy guitars I always play. Now I have nicer guitars but I used to play a real hunk of s--t. It

has no name on the headstock, but I love that guitar.” He records all of the instruments himself and has a backing band play on stage with him. DeMarco is currently out on a North American tour, which will go down the Eastern seaboard before heading south and west and ending in Canada. He is unsure of his next musical step but has a rough idea of what he wants to do. “I’ve been buying a lot of keyboards,” he said. “I’ve done enough strict electric guitar albums to last for a little while. Some days I’ll wake up and want to make an album that’s down tempo, ambient, and keyboardy and then other days I’ll wake up and want to make a Ramones album, and then a Michael Jackson-dance album. I’m gonna try and record another record after Christmas I think.” He is also unsure of what his living situation will be deep into the future, but said for the next few months he will certainly stay in Rockaway. He’s become familiar with the entire peninsula, citing Cuisine by Claudette, the Rockaway Beach Surf Club, and Thai Rock as favorite places of his. “I’m getting to the point where I’m gearing into buying my first house. The houses down here are still semi-affordable considering it’s in New York City. I’ve been looking at some houses upstate and stuff but I’m like well ‘I’m used to living in my neighborhood now, why would I try this new city out?’”

Skin Deep: Permanent Art By Katie McFadden

When you walk into Rockaway Beach Ink for your next tattoo, you can be confident that artist Jonny Vega, better known as Jonny Metropolis, is going to do a great job on your permanent piece. Knowing the nightmare of amateur work by wannabe artists, Jonny Metropolis sticks to his mottos of “Say No to Bootleg Tattoos” and “Quality, Not Speed.” He backs this up with several years of professional experience from living the life of an ink master. Metropolis, 33, grew up in the bungalows of Beach 25th Street and lived in Rockaway for most of his young life, but has seen the world through his art. Receiving recogni-

tion for his expertise in calligraphy, he was requested by Raymond Hernandez to join the Ink Masters Tattoo Show team, giving him the opportunity to travel the world to different conventions. He’s tattooed in 36 states and 12 countries. “We went everywhere from state to state, taking airplanes, taxis, living in hotels. It was almost like being a rock star, minus the guitars and drums,” Metropolis said. Through his travels, he made a name for himself. Many tattoo artists put their trust in Metropolis, allowing him to tattoo their heads and faces. “I became known as a tattoo artist for the tattoo artists,” he said. Metropolis utilized social media like Instagram to get his work out there. “I hashtagged my way around the world,” he said. LaQuan Williams, wide receiver for the Baltimore Ravens, was one of those who noticed Metropolis’ hashtags. Williams requested him to fix a tattoo during a private session at his home, not long before the Super Bowl. As a favor, Metropolis asked Williams if he could appear at a tattoo convention in Baltimore shortly after the Ravens won the big game. Respecting Metropolis’ work, Williams allowed him to tattoo him at the convention, which gave Metropolis even more recognition. “That circulated my name around

a lot,” Metropolis said. Through his travels and use of social media, it wasn’t long before the artist was recognized across the world, especially in Europe. Metropolis was asked to work in Belgium by the president of the tattoo union there. Wanting to establish himself in the Netherlands, Metropolis was going to open a tattoo shop in Holland, which was a bit more liberal than Belgium, but he found that it wasn’t as liberal as he hoped. “I left America. I sold my car, got rid of my apartment and I headed to Europe on a mission. I was really determined to make it happen, but immigration is tricky,” Metropolis said. He was in the process of becoming a Dutch citizen and opening a business, but

was stopped short. “I got a lease for a building. I put money into renovating the building. I had to come up with a business plan and show the projections, but it didn’t reach their revenue expectation of half a million Euro a year. I had to leave because I couldn’t get a residency visa. I think it was more of a prejudiced decision because I was American. I lost almost 20,000 euros there,” he said. When one door closes, another one opens. For Metropolis, that was the space at 91-02 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. After returning to the U.S. , his uncle convinced him to open his own studio in his hometown. “Having to leave Europe was disappointing, but it was a great opening door Continued on page 41

I’m recommending that people impacted by this flawed legislation, and those who sympathize with those who have, need to email their federal senators and congressional representatives. You need to ask them what actions have they taken to amend the Stafford Act and what continued action they plan to take to successfully correct the problem with this legislation? Simply stated the email should ask: What action have you taken to amend the Stafford Act to eliminate factoring in SBA loans when calculating grants? What future steps are you taking to correct this problem? By Hank Iori The Stafford Act is a flawed piece of legislation that was enacted by Congress to help victims of disasters throughout our country. The bill is flawed; it offers SBA loans to individuals then counts the loan against them when they apply for a grant. Residents impacted by Hurricane Sandy were told by their elected officials to apply for an SBA loan to get money to repair their homes. Many people took that advice. In New York City alone, some 2,279 people that took out an SBA loan found out that it was being held against them in the amount of $76,791,756. The reason is that the Stafford Act considers it double dipping if a person takes out a loan and then asks for a grant. The loan amount is deducted from their grant calculation. This is why the Stafford Act needs to be amended to allow grants to be calculated without deducting SBA loans. In a community like Breezy Point, some 211 homeowners had money deducted from their grant in the total amount of $12,794,110. Belle Harbor, 176 homeowners were denied a total of $6,727,561. The list of homeowners in various Queens’s communities denied grant money because of SBA loans goes on (see information below). Our leadership in Congress is so caught up in issues like voting in a new house speaker and preparing for the next candidate debate, that they have lost sight of their mandate to serve the communities they represent. This flawed legislation will now be rolled out to help the flood victims in South Carolina. This just indicates that Congress has no problem repeating the same mistake over and

By Lou Pastina

October 12 was Columbus Day and in America, Italians celebrate their Italian heritage with parades to salute the famous gentleman from Genoa who sailed this way in 1492 courtesy of the Spanish government. I am one of those half-breeds so famous in America, the result of the mixing of two cultural heritages into one. In my case it’s Italian and Irish. Growing up in the all-Italian home of my grandfather in Brooklyn, I naturally identified more with my mother, the lone Irish in the building. It didn’t help when movies like The Godfather came out and everyone in Brooklyn immediately thought they were the Don and had to speak with their mouths stuffed like Marlon Brando. Other movies helped to cement this image like Goodfellas. My image of what it meant to be Italian, or from Italy was shaped by the American media. Our family never talked about where they came from or why they came to America. It was all left to the imagination.

I just recently returned from a trip to Italy and it has completely revamped what my conception of being Italian is all about. I started in Rome but made my way down south to Naples, Capri, and the Amalfi Coast. I was stunned by the utter beauty of the Mediterranean Sea and the vast mountain range that runs down the spine of Italy. I was amazed at the olive and lemon trees, the vineyards which sprout up everywhere. The terraced landscapes where every piece of land is put to productive use. I didn’t meet any gangsters or wiseguys, instead I met really friendly people who liked to talk, eat and drink, and enjoy the “sweet life.” I was on a tour for the first part of the trip, which is a story in itself since the tour guide became mentally unable to continue as the tour guide. I hadn’t planned on being the temporary tour director for a group of 41 but my training from my days running the NYSE kicked in. I was more than happy when the replacement showed up. The tour took me a mere 30 miles from where my father’s family came from, and supposedly there

are still relatives there. Being on the tour prevented me from getting any closer. But if the replacement hadn’t arrived I was game to take the 41 to my family’s home grounds! Isle of Capri is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. The Emperor Tiberius ruled from the island rather than Rome, and I can’t blame him. I got the opportunity to swim in the sea, asking the new tour guide if there were

The Rockaway Times sharks in the Mediterranean. The reply was no, no sharks. A check of Google upon my return found that there were scores of species of sharks in the sea. Sometimes it’s better not to know! Did you know that Sirens (mermaids!) tempted Jason (of the Argonauts) right near Positano? Seems the area was full of mermaids at the time. The only mermaid I saw was the one I Continued on page 13

Author of Sandy-Inspired Novel to Appear at St. John’s An author who wrote a book about Hurricane Sandy will be appearing at a book signing at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. Susan Walberg wrote the novel Finding Maslow, set primarily in Far Rockaway and Long Beach which “takes the reader from a Rockaway Peninsula hospital in disaster-mode to glittering Manhattan, from decimated neighborhoods in New York to earthquake-ravaged Mexico

City.” Walberg, born in Seattle, is a healthcare consultant whose full-time work took her to working at St. John’s in the year preceding Hurricane Sandy. Walberg will meet and sign books in the lobby at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital on October 29th, the anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, at 11 a.m.-12 p.m. and 2 p.m.-3 p.m. A donation will go to the hospital from the proceeds.

October Waves: Photography by Sandra Gottlieb at Hall of Science EXTENDED THROUGH NOVEMBER 10 From The New York Hall Of Science: The New York Hall of Science announced October Waves, an exhibition of thirty large-scale seascapes by Sandra Gottlieb, will run from September 1, 2015 – October 31, 2015 in the museum’s LeCroy and Ramp Galleries. The museum is located at 47-01 111th Street, Queens. (The Museum hours are: Mon – Fri, 9:30 am – 5 pm; Sat & Sun, 10 am – 6 pm). October Waves is a photographic exploration by Gottlieb, a remarkably inventive and prolific artist, and is her sixth series of seascapes photographed in Rockaway in the last 15 years. This most recent series is a documentation of the 2013 hurricane season when the sea and swells were caught up in a rough and tumble drama. “Sandra Gottlieb’s camera confronts the cascading waves with results as profound as they are beautiful and compelling. Creating meditations in time, her lens

dissects a temporal curve, catching the waves with each frame as they play like actors upon a stage. Her interests envelop both the conceptual and the romantic in a wondrous duality . . . Her mastery of the medium allows her vision to reverberate between the two, making her photographs rich material for consideration while simultaneously offering the oceanic images up to the viewer’s simple and sensual enjoyment,” Phil Tarley said. Critic Dominique Nahas observes, “Gottlieb immerses herself and her viewers into what might be called the dramaturgy of the Wave, its Sturm und Drang. October Waves gives us not only the local color, so to speak, of Rockaway Beach, it also offers the viewer what appears to be thirty different character studies or individual portraits of waves.” Gottlieb’s solo exhibitions include the Alden B. Dow Museum of Art and Science, Midland, MI; Krasl Art Center, St. Joseph’s, MI;

Cedarhurst Center for the Arts, Mount Vernon, IL; The Ormond Memorial Art Museum, Ormond Beach, FL; Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Atlanta, GA; Robert Ferst Center for the Arts, Atlanta, GA; Danville Museum of Fine Art & History, Danville, VA; Ashtabula Arts Center, Ashtabula, OH; an upcoming exhibition at the

Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, Tampa, FL in January 2016; and the Chicago Academy of Sciences’ Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (to be announced). Sandra can be reached at sandragottliebinfo@me.com. Her website is: www.sandragottlieb.com ADVERTISEMENT

Between the Bridges in Broad Channel By Peter J. Mahon

Penny For Your Thoughts? This Saturday, October 17, the guys and gals up at the Broad Channel VFW will be holding a Penny Social and everyone is invited! Admission is $10 with doors opening at 6 p.m. and raffle calling starts one hour later at 7 p.m. There will be early bird specials, a door prize and a 50/50. There’s a 50” flat screen television, several brand new bicycles, tickets to attend network television shows like the View, the Chew, Live with Kelly and Michael, a Porter-Cable compressor combo kit, Christmas decorations, toys, kitchen tools, a myriad of tchotchkes, gift baskets galore and

much, much more! All proceeds of this event will go towards the VFW Post’s annual Thanksgiving Dinner and other programs and activities for the disabled veterans residing at St. Albans Hospital. Everyone is welcome so stop by Saturday evening for a few hours with your family, friends and neighbors. You are guaranteed to have a good time. Refreshments will be served. Last weekend’s Chili Cook Off and Music Festival benefit for the New York Families for Autistic Children (NYFAC) at the VFW was a great success. Despite Friday evening’s thunderstorm and heavy

rain, which kept many of the registered contestants from making long trips from New Jersey and Pennsylvania, there were still several local chili heads on hand to make the afternoon interesting. Congratulations to Bill Bowden, a local Channel Chili Head, who walked away with the best tasting chili trophy! Once the chili cook off finished, the VFW Post began to resonate with the sounds of live music and song provided by several bands, all of which were, in addition to being loud, spectacular. The VFW’s hall, canteen and backyard were rocking with the more than 130 guests who stopped by to support the NYFAC cause. This week I am going to let our neighbor Dorothy from West 14th Street close out the column for me. “For months, in the middle of my canal, there has been a large yellow glass bowl filled with water. I always wondered how it got there as I have the same kind of bowls. Recently I spotted a horseshoe crab inside the large bowl and turned over with its tail sticking out and its claw trying to overturn itself. The tide had already receded from the bowl. I mentioned to Sean (a young BC guy enrolled in training to be an EMT) the article I had recently read explaining about horseshoe crabs and how you weren’t supposed to pick them up by their tail but everyone usually does and that one

was stuck and that he was moving -- and lamented “what a shame the tide is out -- he will probably die.” Or maybe that was the crab’s intent I thought. In any event, a little while later I see Sean’s shoes and feet wet. When I questioned him, he admitted he went through the mud to the bowl and took the horseshoe out of the bowl and put it in the mud. It dug itself in to the mud as the tide was out. When I checked the next day I did not see it and the bowl floated away. A young kid with a good heart -- and he wants to be an EMT - Amazing Only in Broad Channel – Dorothy West 14th Road.”

Dear Editor: After Superstorm Sandy and now the near miss from Hurricane Joaquin, why must the residents of the Rockaway Peninsula every year have to worry and stress over each approaching storm season when there could be a remedy? We all know that sand can be pumped to our shores but we also know the ocean always winds up taking it back. If the Army Corps of Engineers along with any other agency involved would just install jetties in the RIGHT LOCATIONS and DO IT CORRECTELY we could have the ultimate in protection. Many different places here in the United States plus other countries use them because they work. Also other types of protection called barriers should be part of the thought process. Some examples are rolling gates, flap gates, swing gates etc. Yes I do understand all these methods are costly but I guess we put money in front of saving lives and our property. How very sad. Danny Ruscillo

To The Rock With Love Dear Editor: Lou Pastina’s column on September 10 made our hearts swell with glorious Rockaway memories. Lou is one of the special ones who adds so much to the community. From the Memorial Day kickoff of the wonderful Grayriders band at the Bungalow Bar through a Labor Day goodbye to a beloved woman at Saint Francis de Sales church, friends in Rockaway make for a life of love and happiness. Moira and Frank Tolan

Cheers For Fest Dear Editor: What a great time we had at the Beach 116th Street Fall Festival! Awesome day, lots of fun, lots of terrific food and entertainment. The kids climbed the rock wall, and hot buttered corn on the cob never tasted so good! Thank you Beach 116th Street merchants, and thank you Rockaway! Matt Whalen

The Rockaway Times

It’s Right There Dear Editor: Coastal cities around the world use ferry systems to move people and freight. Ferries have been around from the time of Pharaoh. Here in NYC, Fulton revolutionized over-the-water transport, and Cornelius Vanderbilt built his first fortune providing New Yorkers with ferry links to jersey. Today, sadly, NYC is woefully behind the times, as people here in Rockaway constantly remind our mayor, our City Council members and our governor. So, where are you, the “expert” thinkers, on city transport, other than demanding more money, more money, and more money? How about a creative use of what we have; that is, creatively use the “roadbed” so to speak supplied to New York 10,000 years ago by the retreating great glacier? And specifically, a Rockaway ferry, a Queens ferry, a Brooklyn ferry, a South Bronx ferry, ferries to our awesome JFK Airport & LaGuardia, and of course to Citi Field! Peter J. Stubben

Didn’t Have The Heart Dear Editor: Hurricane Joaquin was an eye opener for sure. I thought I was strong enough to deal with a storm and its aftermath but I was fooling myself. I was ready. I had cash (after Sandy plastic was useless), I had batteries for flashlights, a plan to move some of the new furniture from the first floor to the second floor, plans to move our cars, etc. What I didn’t have was the heart to do it all again. Fran McCabe

Belle Harbor Dear Editor: (Re: Dylan Watton’s Neighborhood Profile) Grew up in the ‘50s in Belle Harbor with so many friends, CYO, afternoons after school in “the hall,” summers spent beaching it, and summer nights rehearsing for Summer CYO Show. No place better to grow up in! Miss the old days. Sheila McLean

Addabbo To Be In Broad Channel This Thursday State Senator Joseph Addabbo will be holding mobile office hours on Thursday, October 15 in Broad Channel. Addabbo will be at the Broad Channel library, located on Cross Bay Boulevard, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. “As an elected official, making sure I interact with the people I represent is one of my top priorities,” Addabbo said. “I have always urged my constituents to contact me if I can help them in any way, but it is not always easy for some

people to do that during normal business hours. These extended office hours, held at night in various neighborhoods throughout my district, are an excellent way to make sure I am not only reaching as many residents as possible, but also making it more convenient by coming to them.” Addabbo plans to visit every library in his 15th Senate district to meet with constituents. For more information, contact his Howard Beach office at 718-738-1111.

is included in the plans for the renovation of LaGuardia Airport. A board member requested that Sanders arrange an inspection of the hotel coming to Beach 44th Street. There is a high concern that the hotel may be used as a homeless shelter. Sanders said he would look into it. Councilman Ulrich announced that the Rockaway Rockies will hold an official opening ceremony for the hockey rink on Saturday at 7 p.m. The hockey rink unofficially opened a few weeks ago. Ulrich also brought up another hotel plan in the works, saying he supports the Tubridys’ plan to bring a boutique hotel to Beach 109th Street, but he does not support the City’s planning proposal to extend the C2 commercial overlay zoning to include all of Rockaway Beach Boulevard. “I don’t trust the City of New York and I work for them. If we allow development on Rockaway Beach Boulevard and someone else wants to build a hotel and they make money in the summer and not in the off season, you can’t blame them for taking the city’s offer of $250 a night to house sex offenders, homeless or

con-artists. I will support Tubridy, but I will not support C2 zoning. I think it will result in irresponsible development in the long run,” Ulrich said, receiving applause from the audience. During public speaking sessions, several topics were brought up. Several discussed the concerns over the La Quinta Hotel on Beach 44th Street and called for investigation. Jeffrey Williams, a former member of the Rockaway Youth Task Force, brought up personal issues with the youth group and its leader Milan Taylor, while resident Catherine Graham and RYTF member Khalil Anderson suggested that the group’s community garden should be expanded. A councilman from New Orleans advised people to reopen their flood insurance claims by the October 15 deadline if they haven’t already. Transportation activists like Phil McManus brought up issues against the city’s Select Bus Service plan. Carol Palacio of Relay for Life is reaching out to the community for a space to host next year’s American Cancer Society event, which was held a BCAC last year. Call 212-492-8416 or email carol.palacio@cancer.org with suggestions. A neighbor re-

quested that issues with garbage disposal by Playland Motel be addressed. During the committee reports, the Draft Fiscal Year 2017 Capital & Expense budget was briefly discussed for the second time. The board voted unanimously to approve the budget. Jose Velez gave a Parks Committee report that included several updates. Parks is moving forward with the design for the Beach 91st Skate Park. Parks has added a Phase 6 to the boardwalk project which will include five new ADA ramps between Beach 122nd and Beach 149th. Plans were discussed for the Sandpiper Playground along Shore Front Parkway from Beach 106th to Beach 108th Street. Funding for the $3.6 million project has been made available from FEMA, the Queens Borough President and City Council. It will have three sections; one for ages 4 and under, one for ages 5-12 and a waterpark, divided by four-foot fencing. The playground will be larger than the one destroyed by Sandy and will encompass the wave bus shelter on the sidewalk. It will have grandstand seating, shade structures and will be wheelchair

accessible. The waterpark section will have tall sprinkler posts and a whale structure that will spray water to go with the nautical theme of the park. It will have 35 benches and seats and slated shade areas like those by the boardwalk concessions. Discussions were also held regarding beach access in Arverne. Many of the beaches there have been closed for years. There are hopes to resolve the issue before the 2016 beach season. Parks said more beaches will be opened to swimming in that area, as long as lifeguards are available. Surfers are hoping to add more surfing beaches in this area. As a compromise, Bill Zlada and Chris Tedesco of the civic associations in Arverne brought up a proposal that would designate Beach 58th to Beach 63rd Street as swimming beaches, Beach 63rd to 65th as recreational surfing beaches, Beach 65th to 71st as swimming beaches to accommodate crowds coming from the A train, Beach 71st to 73rd as surfing beaches and 73rd to 75th as swimming beaches. No motions have been made in response to this proposal as of yet.

Churches To March For Unity On Saturday Several churches based in Rockaway will band together for the Second Annual Community March of Witness on Saturday, October 17th. The march will last from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m., going from Beach 86th St. and Rockaway Beach Boulevard to the pavilion at O’Donohue Park on Beach 17th Street. Among the churches taking part in the march are the Battalion Pentecostal Assembly, Full Gospel Tabernacle, Glory Light Tabernacle, Love and Grace Church, Reheboth Church, Rockaway Revival Center, St. Mary’s Star of The Sea, and Redeemed Christian Church. More churches may be added as the date draws near and some churches may even join the day of the march. “The goal of this march is to bring a revival in the Rockaway community by reminding people that Jesus loves them,” Keisha Kellman, one of the organizers of the event, said. “We also want to rec-

ognize the third anniversary of Hurricane Sandy and remind our community leaders that be that there are many people in the Rockaways that are still recovering from the storms damage to their homes and lives three years later.” There are a number of activities planned once the march reaches its destination. “We will have a concert once the march arrives at the park, involving many of the participating churches’ worship department,” Kellman explained. “There will be a basketball tournament [and] activities for children involving face painting, decoration of leaves, board games, and rock climbing. There will also be refreshments provided to attendees for free, prayer stations set up for those in need of prayer and other activities.” For more information on the march, call 718-634-7172 or email info@bpraock.org.

Local Business Helped Out By RDRC And SBDC NYC Daylighting was one of many business in Rockaway devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Located on Beach 119th St. and owned by locals Michael and Susan Shea, it’s a family operation which installs Solatube, solar-powered lighting panels that run without electricity. With assistance from the Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation (RDRC) and the New York State Small Business Development Center (SBDC), the business secured a loan from the state’s Excelsior Growth Fund, a nonprofit corporation which promotes the expansion and growth of new and existing businesses. SBDC had previously assisted the Sheas in receiving a $35,000 SBA loan and in May 2014 helped

them to draft a budget for the NYC RISE grant competition. The RISE competition was designed to identify and deploy creative new technologies and solutions to make city businesses more resilient to the impacts of future storms, sea level rise and other effects of climate change. NYC Daylighting was awarded a RISE grant to install Solatube systems in 36 businesses throughout the Rockaways that were impacted by Sandy. Rockaway Neighborhoods: Rockaway Park By Dylan Watton

This is the second in a series of articles about the neighborhoods of Rockaway. In an effort to profile these areas, we’ve talked to residents and business owners about their little slice of the peninsula. This week is Rockaway Park. On a bright warm Sunday in October there was a gaggle of kids rock-climbing on Beach 116th Street. Further down the block a large stage had been set-up, where bands played original jams and fan-favorite covers from the likes of Blondie, Jimmy Cliff, and Crosby, Stills, and Nash. In the municipal parking lot, jerk chicken and Italian sausage were sold by the pound while the kids (presumably done with rock climbing) ate hand-spun cotton candy as moms and dads drank Buds and Bordeaux. Up and down the street local vendors sold soaps, gave out “the best caramel in town,” and let even more kids decorate their mini-pumpkins in time for Halloween. The Second Annual Beach 116th St. Fall Festival brought out residents from all across the peninsula and visitors from the city, New Jersey, and more. All of these guests were in the heart of the neighborhood that is Rockaway Park. This

area stretches from approximately Beach 125th Street to around Beach 108th Street, but can expand depending on who you ask. Beach 116th St. and its immediate surrounding area make up the commercial lifeblood of the western end of the peninsula. From Dalton’s to Rogers, open since 1919, to the headquarters of this very paper, the commercial area of Rockaway Park is simultaneously in constant flux but a consistent mainstay in the lives of Rockaway residents. “This is the only shopping strip on the peninsula that goes up to the beach and boardwalks,” Tom Hughes, owner of Station Liquors and chairman of the Beach 116th St. Partnership (which organized the festival), said. Hughes’ business has been in operation since 1977 and in a reminder of the aforementioned flux has been in four different locations on the street. It’s been directly across the street from the firehouse for seven years. “It’s a perfect shopping block because it’s not a thru-traffic block. It is by far the best for pedestrian traffic.” Rockaway Park serves as “transit hub” of the peninsula, according to Hughes. The A train’s western terminus is on Beach 116th

Street, connecting uptown residents to midtown Manhattan via one of the three shuttle trains in the city’s subway system (and if you’re lucky the occasional A train in the morning or evening rush hours). The north end of the block at the corner of Newport Avenue serves as the first stop for the Q35, which runs up the beginning of Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn all the way up to Nostrand Avenue and the 2 and 5 trains. Just outside Pickles & Pies (the site of many a late-night inebriated meal for the youth of Rockaway) and Rogoff’s is the Q53, which while providing

an often-hellacious ride up Woodhaven Boulevard nonetheless connects Rockaway to the borough of which it is nominally part. And since these three major buses and trains end on this block, Rockaway Park is often the neighborhood where the majority of DFDs congregate during the summer months. Despite being a commercial area for most of its boundaries, Rockaway Park is indeed home to many houses and apartment buildings. Noreen Ellis is a memContinued on next page

ber of the Rockaway Civic Association and has lived on Beach 122nd Street since 2003, following in the footsteps of many of her Brooklyn transplant friends. “I love the small town aspect that you know your neighbor, she said. “We’re in close proximity to Beach 129th and Beach 116th Street. I love grabbing the paper and a bagel and walking around the neighborhood. In Rockaway Park, Ellis has also found a diversity of neighbors and residences that are unique. “We are one of the sections that has multi-story buildings without being inundated like in Manhattan. Co-ops and condos are side-byside with single-story dwellings. Everybody works very cohesively, she said. Bobby Zimmer’s parents moved from the Bronx to Beach 119th Street in 1950, the year he was born. Describing himself as “the only Jewish guy on the Irish Riviera, he still lives in the house he grew up in during the fall and winter and in summer lives in a bungalow on Beach 109th Street. “It was the best place to grow up, he says of Rockaway Park. “We would play skelly in the streets, and the Good Humor ice cream man’s name was Harry. It was a melting pot of people, Irish, Italians, Jews. On Wednesday nights we’d go up and see the fireworks on the boardwalk and there’d be hundreds of people watching. Zimmer was a lifeguard in his teen years and while he did move away for a few years, he ultimately decided to come back and live in his childhood home. He somewhat laments the way he has seen the neighborhood change despite still loving the area. “Rockaway became the place where everyone wanted to join the natural amenities and bring their fami-

lies, he said. “When they needed a place to put older people Rockaway became a place to build nursing homes and tall buildings. The mom-and-pop delis disappeared. You used to buy a toothbrush at Rexall’s but now they call it Duane Reade. Maureen Walsh runs Walsh Properties, based on Beach 116th Street. “We have been on the block for 13 years and I’ve been in this office [on the second floor above Station Liquors] for six more, she said. “Most of the people who shop around here live in the area. Having an office here is very convenient if people want to stop by. She has noticed a positive change in Rockaway Park over the past decade or so. “It’s been a 180-degree turn, she said. “The [singleroom occupancies] were owned by slumlords and now it’s a much nicer area than it was 15 or 16 years ago. The gangs have been chased out and it’s become very beautiful. As the Rockaway Renaissance continues in the years to come, Rockaway Park will be at the forefront of change due to its location and importance to both visitors and residents. With the boardwalk scheduled to open all the way up to Beach 126th Street by next Memorial Day, the neighborhood will only continue to improve. “I have to say that [Rockaway Park] is definitely keeping the positive shift towards change, Ellis said. “The city is reawakening to the jewel that is Rockaway. We will continue to feature different Rockaway neighborhoods in the coming weeks. If you’d like to talk about your neighborhood and what makes it special to you, contact the author at dylan@rockawaytimes.com.

ROCKAWAY BEACH. APARTMENTS AVAILABLE. INQUIRE WITHIN.

After we inquired about the now exposed wooden jetties (this shot is at Beach 100th or so) an Army Corps of Engineers spokesperson told us: “The beach appeared to hold up very well, with relatively limited scarping. There is currently no detailed estimate of how much sand has moved out of the beach system. When there is a good storm or wave event, sand moves off the beach berm and forms an offshore

sandbar. When you get a period of low wave activity, much of the sand can move back to the beach berm. ‘Sticks’ will appear and disappear as this sand moves around. Of course, sand is also lost out of the system both offshore and to the west. In the erosion hot-spots, we still believe that sufficient sand will be in place for an average of 4-5 years, and it looks like we are on track for that.

Ideas for

Privatize the Department of Transportation By Rick Horan I’m sorry to say that I did not receive any suggestions about how to fix the NYC Department of Transportation following last week’s column on my top 10 reasons for hating them. I can’t really say I’m surprised. Most people are resigned to the reality that DOT is nothing more than a slow, bloated government agency that has neither the ability nor motivation to do a better job. Besides, who has the time to fight City Hall? But let’s try to dream in color for a moment. Couldn’t we just replace this dysfunctional group with a totally different group? It may be theoretically possible but routing out bureaucrats is next to impossible. Besides, we would still be stuck with a secretive, public monopoly under the control of a dysfunctional mayor. We deserve better, much better. The answer is not to simply shuffle around the players and keep the

DOT political structure the same. It’s that system that gave us our deteriorating infrastructure and stupid policy decisions. If we want different results we’re going to have to do things differently, much differently. The sad fact is that the Department of Transportation is broken beyond repair and needs to go. My idea is to replace it with a public – private partnership called “Transportation Works.â€? Here’s what it might look like‌. The mayor has proven that he is incapable of leading the DOT and making sound transportation policy, so we will replace him with a Transportation Works Committee consisting of representatives that are elected from each City Council district based on their own local transportation requirements. The Committee will be charged with setting policy, determining short and long-term budgets and hiring the private company that will provide administration services.

Celebrating 38 Years Of Serving The Community

Transportation Works Administration duties will be bid out to private companies with a proven record of managing large, urban transportation systems. The Committee’s performance will be measured against targets such as infrastructure condition, maintenance, safety, reducing commuting time and staying within budget. Committee members are elected every four years. Committees that underperform are disbanded early. Members can only serve one term. Construction, repair and maintenance will be bid out to private companies and reviewed for competitiveness. Unlike DOT, Transportation Works will be totally transparent. Its meetings, policies, goals, performance results, finances and reports will be readily available on their website. It’s a simple idea really, use public oversight of private companies that are skilled in moving people in urban areas to give us what DOT has failed to, a transportation system better than the one we had 100 years

ago. Privatization is hardly a new idea. Companies competing for business are the foundation of this country. It has also been used successfully in other places... Allen Consulting and the University of Melbourne looked at 54 large infrastructure projects in Australia in 2007 and found that the privately financed ones had smaller cost overruns and were more likely to be finished on schedule than those financed through traditional publicsector methods. In 2004 the Virginia Department of Transportation wanted to relieve congestion on the I-495 Capital Beltway. But the state’s preferred plan cost $3 billion. Two private companies, Fluor-TransUrban, figured out a way to relieve the congestion for less than half that and even raised the money to build it. What do you think about privatizing NYC DOT and put transportation decision-making and oversight back in the hands of the people? Or what’s your idea? Write to me at: RickHoran@SmarterStreets.org.

Diary Of A Fat Man: Stuff That Works By Bruce Bernfeld What is it that has helped me n losing 54 pounds and feeling so much better and stronger and less tired? There are some nutritional supplements and other healthy products that I have that incorporated into my healthy living lifestyle that I’d like to share with you. First, I want to give a shout out to my Rockaway peeps Jane Borak, Dr. Roseanne Schnoll and Lola Star and my left coast friend Blair Slavin for recommending some of these great products. APPLE CIDER VINEGAR : awful but has many benefits ; BRAGG AMINO ACIDS: great soy sauce substitute; CHIA SEEDS Loaded with Omega-3 , anti-oxidants and fiber. COD LIVER OIL again Omega-3 oil Cod liver oil is used for high cholesterol, high triglycerides, kidney disease in people with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, osteoarthritis, depression, an autoimmune disease called systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), glaucoma, and middle ear infections (otitis media). NUTRITIONAL YEAST: Has strong flavor that is described as nutty, cheesy, or creamy, which makes it popular as an ingredient in cheese substitutes. It can be used in many recipes in

place of cheese, such as a topping on broccoli and cauliflower and atop scrambled eggs Speaking of CAULIFLOWER I can’t stop singing its praises (not a thought one hears too often!). Puréed and mixed with fried onions it mimics mashed potatoes and Vitamixed it replaces dough as a crust for pizza. Drop me a note at bbernfeld@gmail.com and I’ll send you the recipes CACAO POWDER: Antioxidents and cardiovascular benefits... And it’s CHOCOLATE!! Great in smoothies The FARMIGO service: GREAT place to get farm fresh organic fruits and veggies and other foodstuffs Experiment with SPICES! There are some great ones! DIGESTIVE BITTERS : Haven’t tried them yet. Curbs sugar cravings and relieves heartburn among other things. Will let you know my experience with them. Also: Coconut Oil, Steel Cut Oatmeal, Protein Powder, Black Beans, Pure Protein Shakes( 35 g. of protein in each can. I’m nener too far from a can of seltzer. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate (great before a meal to begin to fill you up) I also want to give kudos to my Vitamix!! Thanks, buddy! Okay, now for the lowdown as I see it.

Facts You Probably Don’t Need (Submitted by Sean McVeigh. We take his facts at face value). ☛☛☛ ☛Poland’s Boy Scouting association was transformed into an armed resistance force during World War II. They fought in the Warsaw Uprising, assassinated SS officials and liberated a concentration camp. ☛The Iliad and the Odyssey are just two parts of an eight-part epic but the other six parts have been almost entirely lost to history. ☛Chocolate milk was invented by an Irishman visiting Jamaica in the 1680s. Locals mixed cocoa with water which Hans Sloane found nauseating. So he mixed it with milk, which he found more pleasant. He brought the recipe back to England where he sold it to pharmacies as medicine. ☛Strawberry generation is the Chinese term for anyone who

All of the above are great aids for a healthy lifestyle but if you need to lose weight the BEST advice I can give you is: EAT LESS, EAT ONLY WHEN YOU’RE HUNGRY AND DON’T EAT ANYTHING THAT YOU KNOW YOU SHOULDN’T (I know you’ve heard these many, many times in your lives but guess what, they are spot on and that’s probably why we always hear them!!) And one more thing. Tell anyone who will listen to you that you are on a diet! You won’t want them to know you failed!

☛The Roman Pantheon which was built in 118 A.D. is still the largest unreinforced concert dome in the world. ☛Life existed on Earth for 80 percent of its existence and was present for almost the moment the Earth cooled. ☛Daddy Longlegs have been around for at least 400 million years barely changing and predate the dinosaurs.

HAPPINESS There is no doubt that feeling happy has a positive impact on every part of our beings. Life is life, however, and there are events that cause us pain, suffering and sadness. And, sometimes we cannot shake the feeling. Taking a proactive attitude towards being happy helps to put you in that space by mindfully focusing on flipping the sadness to happiness. What makes you happy? Big question. Take the time to think about this and write down all of the things that make you happy. The items on your page can be far-fetched and day-to-day practi-

cal. What is important is that each “happy wish is an inside feeling and not just a check mark on a bucket list. The idea is to make every moment in every day happy so that it is not a “bucket list before I die kind of thing. Once you know what makes you happy, you will be able to call upon those things when you are not so happy. For example, if taking a walk down to the shore makes you happy, feeling the sand beneath the soles of your feet and opening your heart to the sun that is right overhead in mid-day, then when there is sadness, suffering or pain, you can experience it that day or conjure up that image, thereby

pinesses and keep conjuring them up whenever other things come up that compromise your balance and strength. We can choose to strive to bring happy things in to our minds and bodies or we can choose to let the sadness, suffering and pain take over. Sounds simple. It is not. Sometimes it’s a huge effort to overcome, but with practice, doable, and well worth it. If you are going through something really tough, and it is hard to find the strength to overcome, reach out to someone and tell him/her that you want to conjure up happiness. Chances are that person will give you a boost. We are not alone. Ever. May you be happy, may you be free, may you let go of things that do not serve you, may you have inner peace.

lessening the negative impact of your pain or suffering. Know what makes you happy and bring those things into your life very often. Do you like key lime pie? I’m not saying to eat one whole key lime pie a day, but wouldn’t it bring a smile to your face to make a key lime pie once in a while, have a slice and share with others? Simple happy pleasures that dilute hard life happenings bring us to a more balanced, happy place. Do you like to talk to your mom? Your friend so and so? Whoever? Ring them up. Take the time to make you happy by sharing some exchange and lighting the spark of good feeling within you. There are countless “happinesses in our lives. Sometimes we just don’t stop and focus and think “that is happy. Do it. Zero in on the hap-

By Emil R. Lucev, Sr. & Daughter, Katie Lucev “Oh, how sweet it was!â€? In Atlantic City, back in the ol’ days, one could ride a bike they rented until their heart’s content without question! In the Rockaways, back in the ol’ days, one could ride his or her bike, rented or not without question! That is‌until the self-proclaimed pharaoh, Robert Moses got his hooks into the NYC Parks Department and issued his “Rules of Engagementâ€? for our boardwalks! At the top of his list was, NO BICYCLES ALLOWED, period!!! In more contemporary times my Grandson and I did ride our bikes from Bch. 9th Street in Far Rockaway, to Bch. 122nd Street and the rock jetty at the point. Our route was as follows: s /N THE BOARDS FROM "CH 9th St. to Bch. 126th St. Then to the Blvd. s /N THE "LVD FROM "CH 126th St. to Riis Park.

s 2IIS 0ARK TO "CH TH 3T and the State Road at Fort Tilden. s 3TATE 2OAD PAST 4ILDEN TO the Point entrance, or through Tilden to the Point via Bch. 193rd St.. s 4HEN 3TATE 2OAD 0OINT Blvd. to the beach at the end of the rock jetty or Reid Ave. South to Ocean Ave. to Breezy Point Blvd. via Pelham Walk. Now that is a PHYSICAL BIKE ROUTE, and not one dreamed up by a computer whiz kid sitting behind a desk! Let’s recycle the bicycle routes of Ol’ Rockaway Beach so that we may, once again, enjoy our spectacular sights and shores.

Parmesan 1 cup ketchup, divided ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

Directions:

Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees Heat the oil in a large sauté pan over high heat. Add the zucchini, peppers, garlic paste, ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes, and salt and pepper, to taste. Cook until almost soft, 5-8 minutes. Set aside to cool. Whisk together the eggs and herbs in a large bowl. Add the meat, bread crumbs, cheese, ½ cup of the ketchup, 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar, and the cooled vegetables and mix until just combined. Mold the meatloaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Whisk together the remaining ketchup, balsamic vinegar, and red pepper flakes in a small bowl. Brush the mixture over the entire meatloaf. Bake the meatloaf for 1 hour 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and let rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

Glues and Adhesives By Artie Wallace

Glue and adhesives is kind of a sticky subject (pardon the pun). Everyone you ask has their own experiences and preferences, and no one answer is right. Although gluing may sound too simple to focus an article on, sometimes it’s the simplest things that need the most focus. There are many different glues and adhesives on the market today and almost as many ways to apply them. No matter if you’re doing a small craft project or a large home repair project, using the right glue or adhesive for the job is very important. As an example, Liquid Nail comes in over a dozen varieties. Using the wrong type of Liquid Nail to glue up a tub surround will end up with a reaction that will eventually cause the Liquid Nail to eat its way through the surround. Another example is epoxies. Not all epoxies will adhere to all materials. The material you’re trying to glue, temperature, moisture, and condition of surfaces are only a few factors that determine what type of glue to use for a project. As a general rule, when gluing

two things together both surfaces should be clean and dust free, there should be minimal moisture in the surfaces, and items should be left undisturbed until glue is 100 percent dry (always allow a little more drying time then instructions recommend). Most of all, make sure you’re using the right glue for the surfaces you’re trying to adhere. Another thing to keep in mind, different adhesives require different methods for cleanup. Some clean with water, some with mineral spirits, etc. So always prepare to have the necessary materials available for cleanup. As simple as it may seem to glue to items together, take a few minutes and google the gluing process (example: how to glue fabric to wood). You may find that to do it properly it takes a few more steps than you thought. You can also email me at the address below for a glue reference chart. With the cooler temperatures getting close, next week we will cover maintaining your heating system. Tell me what you would like to read about in future DIYer articles. RBSA Holds 3rd Event for NYC Youth Surfers Colder conditions greeted us early, but the day warmed up to be a cracker of a day with extremely clean wind and wave conditions for our little contestants. We had some newer kids sign up for the RBSA 2015 NYC Youth Surfing Championships, which is always great to see, taking us over the 40 competitors mark. A great achievement for the first time running an event like this. In each of the finals we saw some great rivalries surface, such as Aaron Gershkovich and Rockaway local Giancarlo Acosta battling newcomer in Owen Conti who took out the win.

The points for this division are going to make it a tight race for who will be NYC Champion! Same goes for the 14 & Under division, a super tight race between Pat Murphy and the Caracciolo brothers in Kyle & Drew. Going to be exciting to watch! The contest sponsor for this event was St James Clothing and Jimmy Dowd took this series to a whole other level! Not only did Jimmy bring down some seriously impressive schwag, such as a skateboard, volley balls, snorkel kits, DVDs and kites to give away to contestants, but in the end he gave each division winner $20 for their efforts, not to mention all the free water, soda and pizza for contestants and their families. You the man Jimmy! As for the 16 & Under for boys and girls, this is anyone’s to take! Here are the winners and updated points for all contestants going into contest #4, sponsored by Gotham Surf Club on Sunday October 25. And remember, you gotta be in it to win it!: 10& Under Girls 1 Jenna Ferraro; 2 Maya Karl; 3 Kathleen Conti 10&Under Boys 1 Owen Conti; 2 Giancarlo Acosta; 3 Aaron Gershkovich; 4 Noah Avallone; 5 Parker Karinsky 12&Under Girls 1 Reilly Nichtern; 2 Rosalyn de Castro; 3 Mia Naim 12&Under Boys 1 Sandon Karinsky; 2 Daniel Monte; 14&Under Girls 1 Summer Ejnes; 2 Rourke Andrews 14&Under Boys 1 Kyle Caraciolo; 2 Pat Murphy; 3 Drew Caraciolo; 4 Tim McGuinness

NYPD PINK By: Katie McFadden Pink is the new blue, at least for the month of October. In an effort to show support for breast cancer survivors and raise awareness, the NYPD is conducting a month-long contest among the department to determine the “Pinkest Precinct.” Each precinct has from October 1 to October 30 to show off their best pink and share it on social media, using the hashtag #NYPDBlueGoesPink. Rockaway’s own 100th and 101st Precinct have shown strong enthusiasm towards the cause, turning everything from their badges to their uniforms to their cars and even buildings different shades of pink. The 100th Precinct has posted several photos to their Twitter account of officers showing their supportive spirit including officers with pink socks, pink badges, pink shirts and cars with pink stripes. They also decorated their precinct with banners and pink wrapping around the outside lights. The 101st Precinct is giving the 100th stiff competition. Officer Lomangino was credited for changing all of the outside precinct lights from white to pink, so the entire Mott Avenue building appears to be pink at night. On Saturday, October 10, the precinct held a breast

cancer awareness event for the community, which included activities for kids and refreshments. The precinct also turned the blue stripes and NYPD logo pink on one of its vehicles. (Photos by Doug MacLeod and the 100th and 101st Precincts).

for another opportunity, he said. “This storefront was empty. It was perfect timing. Within two weeks, Metropolis renovated the building and opened Rockaway Beach Ink in July. Metropolis does all of the tattooing himself, but he’s joined by fellow artist Ariel Colon who does airbrush work specializing in realism. “He’s a phenomenal artist and he’s apprenticing with me. We’re working together and trying to make this happen, Metropolis said. “With ink shows on television, the craft is being devalued. There are so many people trying to become tattoo artists now and people aren’t taking it as seriously. I think of myself as a surgeon because I make alterations to people’s bodies. I know all about blood borne pathogens, the dermis, the epidermis and all of these things that you’re supposed to educate yourself on when you get into this trade, which people don’t do these days. I put two years into just learning the craft before I bought a tattoo machine. Now you have people buying machines off eBay and Wal-Mart. You have topnotch green berets in the tattoo industry and then you have a bunch of inexperienced infantrymen who are getting killed. They’re all expendable, but nobody cares because people

Page 41

want quick tattoos for $25, he said. Metropolis puts pride into his work. “We’re here to bring honor back to our trade and show people we have quality work. Now that I’m back in America, it’s time to build on this foundation and create something bigger. Metropolis said the shop has been successful so far. He takes walk-ins and appointments and will cater to almost all requests, no matter how unique. “The other day, I had two girls get pizza infinity signs on their butts, which was pretty weird, but they wanted it, he said. There are some points where he draws the line, though. “I won’t tattoo penises, he said. Metropolis also refuses to do tattoos that may jeopardize careers. “I won’t do hands or faces of individuals with specific careers or those who haven’t figured out their career path. I ask people what they do and try to steer them in the right direction if I feel like what they want might jeopardize their life, he said. Some may have seen Metropolis and Colon at the Beach 116th Street Fall Festival last weekend, doing airbrush work. They hope to do even more events and collaborate with other local artists in the future. “We’re looking to work with the Rockaway Artists Alliance. Ariel might do art seminars and we’d like to do large

murals around the neighborhood. As Rockaway is being restored, artwork is starting to be incorporated more and we want to be a part of that, Metropolis said. For now, you can visit Metropolis and Colon at Rockaway Beach Ink on the corner of Beach 91st and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Hours vary, but they’re generally open from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays, 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Saturdays and from “2:17 p.m. to 7:07 p.m on Sundays. Call 347-926-4164 or stop by to make an appointment and follow Rockawaybeach.ink on Instagram to see their work.

AHOY ROCKAWAY! Water temperature 66* FBroad Channel (Goose Pond Marsh) Hello anglers (and non-anglers), welcome to this week’s fishing report. We have lots of exciting news for you this week. With the threat of Hurricane Joaquin removed, the Rockaway peninsula collectively let go a sigh of relief and had a much more relaxed weekend. We enjoyed great weather with lots of warm sunshine and cool air temperatures. As you know (because you read the Rockaway Times), the water temperature has dropped significantly and suddenly (seven to

Page 43

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2015

eight degrees) in the last 14 days. This is the kickoff for the “Fall Run” fishing season in Rockaway. Mother nature has given the hint to migratory fish that the summer vacation is over and it’s time to move out. That’s right anglers, it’s “ON” right now so don’t lose any fishing time. Large Blue fish and some large Striped bass have been haunting the North Channel Bridge area on the prowl for bunker (Atlantic Menhaden). These are the fish that are so big that when you see them in the water you get a little bit scared. The ones that put that thought in your mind of “I had no idea fish that large were in the bay.” These big fish are coming in close to shore, REALLY close, so you have

a good chance of catching one just from fishing off a pier, bridge, or even from a dock. You don’t need a boat. Don’t be afraid to use that really big swimming or popping lure that you don’t think the fish will hit on. They will strike on it at this time of year. For those anglers that are less skilled at presenting an artificial bait (lure), a nice juicy chunk of Bunker offered up on a hook will work just as well (remember, they’re chasing Bunker). Keeping a fresh chunk of bunker with you at all times is hard. Keeping a lure with you is not. Speaking of black fish (Tog), they are here, and they are getting bigger and showing up in larger numbers. This is typical for this time of the season. This is excellent fishing weather for black fish as the air is cool and the sun is strong. The October morning chill often gives way to a nice warm day (just like this weekend) and you’ll be taking the sweatshirt off by 10 A.M.. Black fish like to hang around the rock jetties on the outside (ocean) beaches. On the inside (bay) they like to hang around submerged structures such as bridges and docks, underwater wrecks, between those two poles out there, pilings, and piles of broken off concrete chunks just dumped in the water. Black fish love to eat Fiddler crabs. An angler looking to catch larger black fish might want to use “Green” crabs (cut into 1/4’s and put on the hook through the leg holes). The black fish really

go crazy when they see that bait being offered. Black fish must be 16” in length and a limit of four fish per angler per day. Striped bass must be 28” in length with a limit of one fish a day per angler. Blue fish limit is 15 fish (10 of which can’t be less than 12”). Possession of Whale sharks (60-feet long) is prohibited (we just wanted to see who’s paying attention). We checked in with our local stations and here’s what they had to report. Big Ron’s Fishing Station in Howard Beach: We called and spoke to John at Big Ron’s who tells us that the Black fish are in and doing well. Large Blue fish have found their way into the shallower areas off of the channels where the boats are moored. The Blue fish are chasing and eating the bunker schools. Large Striped bass have moved into the bay as well. Tom’s Wave Service Station/ Bait & Tackle in Rockaway Park: Tom reports that the fishing action has definitely picked up after the stormy weather of last week. The Black fish are everywhere and hitting hard on Green crabs. Tom also reports “bass on the beach.” The Surf dogs are getting them (nobody ever will say exactly where though). The bass are hitting mostly on clams, but large popping plugs are also producing results as well. Well, that’s it anglers, the FALL RUN has begun in Rockaway, so get out there. This is when it ALL happens, until next week...

Congratulations Jack! Jack Fanning of World Champions Karate Center achieved his 100th star this week. This translates to 300 successfully completed Karate classes. Fanning started his Karate training at two-and-ahalf years old in the Pre-K program at The World Champions Karate Center. He transitioned into the regular five-year old program at the age of four. Always ahead of himself, Fanning was the youngest Blue belt(soon to Green belt) at the Dojo. He celebrated at the award ceremony with his proud parents, fellow students and Sensei Bruce Hodes after receiving the specially designed three-foot trophy for his accomplishment.

Locals Hold Paddleball Tournament By Bill Swensen

Rockaway held a local tournament for all the regular paddleball players who come down every week to the courts on Beach 81st Street and play. We had another beautiful Rockaway day to play this event, which just made the day even better. The organization that went on behind the scenes to make this tournament a success was fantastic as well. Everything ran smoothly and on schedule. Anything you needed was provided, with plenty of food and drink for everyone. The tournament had a great atmosphere since everybody in the tournament knew each other. This led to most of the crowd giving the players on the court a hard time, and a lot of ribbing along the way (all in good fun). This good-natured ribbing and the fact that everyone involved knew each other created a tournament environment that was really enjoyable. Don’t get me wrong though, when it came to the games everyone got pretty serious and were trying to do their best to win bragging rights for Rockaway. Everyone got to play four games. Each game was played with a differ-

ent, random partner. At the end of the four rounds the eight players with the highest scores made it to the semi-finals. The semi-finals included: Theresa McConnon, Kevin Zwolinski, Cavel Samuels, Angel Mal, Scott Parker, Mike Millner, Dave Morgan, and Bill Swensen. Special thanks need to go to Theresa McConnon for being the main organizer of the event, and to Kenny Swan who did all the heavy lifting in order to get the courts ready. Also a final thank you to Robert Intelisano for running the tournament on game day. As you can see paddleball is still a big part of the culture of our town. Hopefully paddleball will live on forever in Rockaway.

Keeping Track

Locals Turning In Top Times It was a beautiful day as nearly 10,000 high school athletes, and an equal amount of spectators, descended on Van Cortlandt Park for the largest cross country meet in the nation, the Manhattan College Invitational. Once again, a strong contingent of runners from Rockaway fared well. Tessie Gallagher, taking inspiration from sister Kerri’s participation on the United States team at the World Track and Field Championships in Beijing, set a new standard for Bishop Kearney HS with a 15:57 time in the 4K. Sister Jackie Gallagher hit 16:21 and cousin Collen Gallagher 16:34. In between the Gallagher sisters was Jackie Thompson of Notre Dame Academy in 16:15 while Kaleigh Gilroy led the charge for Archbishop Molloy. On the boys side, Alex Goldberg paced Molloy with a season best 13:47 following a 17:31 on the state championship course at Bowdoin. Christian Lanzetta notched 15:44. Aidan Donohue of Xavier did his best VCP time of 14:29 previously and also hit 16:37 at the McQuaid Invitational. Carolyn Crocker was not available for Manhattan but has Molloy’s best VCP time so far. Deven Rodriguez of Christ the King and James Lunny of Xavier have also contributed to the success of their teams. An outstanding group of freshmen has been led by Anthony Markle of Xaverian on the boys’ side and Olivia Murray of Marymount on the girls’ side. Markle went 6:49 for 2K at Manhattan followed by teammates Terence Mullin in 7:39 and Brendan Glynn in 8:12. Terence Moriarty went 7:41 and Dylan Abernethy 7:46 for Xavier. Matt McDade ran 7:34 and brother Jack McDade 7:49 for Molloy. Kennedy Kirk was not at Manhattan but is also doing well for the Molloy frosh. Olivia Murray opened the season with a strong 10:03 for 2400M at the Jim Smith Invitational and has already moved up to the varsity circuit highlighted by 17:53 at VCP for

the NYC Mayor’s Cup. Paige McDade posted a solid 9:12 for Molloy at the Manhattan Invitational. League and state championships are coming up in November. On the college courses, the Gallagher family success continues with Conor and Liam Gallagher running for Molloy College. Senior Conor took 1st in the LIU Post Invitational in a blistering 26:08 and then bested that at NJIT with a 25:27 time good for 2nd place. Sophomore Liam hit a season best 29:03 at NJIT. Patrick Goldberg of The College of Mount Saint Vincent took 1st at the Baruch Invitational and then was first among Division 3 runners and 25th overall at the Fordham Fiasco, right behind his neighbor and good friend Conor Gallagher. After an injury at LIU Post, he returned to action this weekend with a 10th place finish at the CCNY Invitational. Devin Rocks of Fordham also ran well in the Fiasco and again at the recent Metropolitan Championships. Jimmy Buckley of Scranton has been the Royals leader going 20:39 for 6k Kat Vassar and 27:46 at Misericordia for 8K. Kathleen Woods has been the first runner for Fairfield in every race this season, running season bests of 19:17 for 5K at Marist and 22:57 for 6K at Lehigh. Conference championships finish up October before the NCAA Regionals and Championships in November. CYO is the breeding ground for these runners and the CYO season is at the halfway point with St. Francis de Sales and Blessed Trinity among those who will be vying for the Diocesan Championships on October 25. And for those who have completed their high school and college careers, the Rockaway Gliders keeps everyone running. John Edwards’ Gliders are gearing up to participate in the NYC Marathon as Team Kevin, honoring Kevin Kearney. All in all, Rockaway runners are having a great impact on the running scene. Stay tuned.
