Rockaway Hosts Half and Full Marathon Rockapulco Run sponsored a Marathon and Half Marathon on Sunday, October 11. Hundreds competed in the races that were on the boardwalk from Beach 126th to approximately Beach 60th. (Some of the boardwalk was considered to be in a “red zone” with an uptick in Covid cases so with an abundance of caution, the race course was modified). Organizer John Edwards said runners came from all over and “there was a great
showing by our local Rockaway Gliders including Pat Goldberg, Conor Gallagher, Dan Mazzuchini, Kerri Gallagher, Sean Cahill, Rory Cahill, Kelly McNoble, Katie Scotko, Mary Edwards, Steve Gifford and Meaghan King.” Jerry Faulkner won the Half on the Men’s side and Ivette Mejia led the Women’s. In the Marathon, Oz Pearlman topped all with a time 2:34:14 and Erica Green was the fastest female at 2:59:37. Photos by Rick Horan

A Massive Mural for The Big Yard By Katie McFadden
What better blank canvas to utilize than an entire schoolyard? This past weekend, Seaside Playground got a fresh new makeover with a huge painted mural by artist Shantell Martin. To celebrate the debut of the piece, kids from around the community were invited to partake by learning how to use Martin’s unique style of interconnected line painting to create their own masterpieces, which were hung around the yard at the Waterside School on Beach 109th Street. After a call for artists, Shantell Martin, best known for her dynamic, category-defying, larger-than-life black and white drawings, was selected by Friends of Seaside Playground (FOSP) to take on the task of bringing “The Big Yard” at Seaside Playground to life. Martin’s work has previously been seen at Governors Island, the Oculus and
Lincoln Center. This past weekend, she put her brush to the asphalt, transforming the 16,000 square foot outdoor recreational space with her 360-degree mural comprised of signature lines, iconic shapes, and primarily monochromatic black and white imagery to reflect the vibrancy of
Rockaway’s community and urban beach landscape. On Sunday, October 11, the mural made its debut at a community event. "Through the wonder, movement, and layers of details embedded in her canvases, Shantell Martin's work naturally engages the collective imagination and brings people together," says Laura Frank and Carolina Cisneros of FOSP. On Sunday, kids were able to learn about Martin’s unique art style during a socially distant workshop and created their very own line drawing pieces, which were hung up around the fencing of the schoolyard. Members of the Jamaica Bay Rockaway Parks Conservancy were on hand to show support and provide masks and sanitizer to participants. This mural was made possible by funding from The Continued on page 4

A MASSIVE MURAL Continued from Page 3 Rockaway Hotel, 7|G Foundation, and Citizens Committee for New York City. Parts of the mural can be viewed from ground level around the schoolyard, but the best views, to take in the whole piece, are from above. Being right across the street from the brand-new Rockaway Hotel, the mural can best be viewed in full, from one of the hotel’s many publicly accessible rooftop spaces, and balconies for guests staying the night. Those coming from and arriving to New York via JFK airport may also get a glimpse of the full piece from the skies.

Sorry to Barge In
What’s up with those long-neglected, sunken barges on the bayside in Arverne? Nobody would like to know the answer more than the new property owner of 75-00 Amstel Blvd, Smiley Works, Inc. After all, the barges are blocking the water rights of a property they hope to develop with bayside marina views. The barges and cranes

After reaching out to city, state and federal agencies and even the barges’ previous owners, without any action taking place, Smiley is anything but happy. Thank You NYPD Makes Rockaway Stop By Katie McFadden
On Tuesday afternoon, October 13, Maria Dziergowski, Tatyanna Timoshenko and Sonia Cunningham stood before the NYPD officers of Transit District 23 on Beach 116th Street to share the message that they have their back. After all, these women know firsthand the importance of supporting the NYPD. They all had an NYPD officer in their life who died in the line of duty. In recent weeks, through the connection of retired NYPD Transit Chief and local resident Joe Fox, these family members have joined in the effort of those behind the Thank You NYPD Facebook page to lift the spirits of officers at a time when morale is low. Retired NYPD Transit Chief turned life coach, Joe Fox, spoke about some of the obstacles the NYPD has had to endure in recent months and the reason for Tuesday’s event. “The greatest reason why we’re
what you believe, you say what you believe and you care about people and put your lives on the line for people you don’t know and you still do that in spite of being vilified by so many,” Fox said. “We have to get through this, but we will. People can attack us, they can take their respect and gratitude away, but there’s one thing no one can take from us and that’s the mission. The only way you lose that is by giving it up or forgetting it and if you ever forget it and ever want to know
here, as crime and shootings and homicides go up, remember before 2020, whenever a police officer was attacked or shot at or God forbid murdered, every single elected official used this language: ‘an attack on a police officer, is an attack on each of us.’ Has anyone heard anybody say that in the last six months? I haven’t. Not once. Shame on them,” Fox said. He then reminded the officers of their purpose. “You believe in what you do, you do
what that mission is, go find that letter that somebody wrote to you for the impact you made on them when you recovered their phone or made an arrest or saved them.” Fox then introduced Anna and Anthony Delfaus, who in 2014, launched the Thank You NYPD Facebook page to show support for NYPD officers at a time when negative sentiment against the NYPD was rampant across the nation following the death of Eric Garner in Staten Island and then Michael Brown in Ferguson. Despite receiving death threats, they kept the page going. “I’m not going to be silenced,” Anna Delfaus said. The page, which grew a following of more than 121,000 people, would become even more important in 2020 when protests and anti-police sentiment arose again following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. However, Delfaus Continued on page 9

***** With the news that the MTA is desperate for a federal bailout and New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli saying “unheard of” service cuts will happen, more people will be forced to drive cars. As it is, plenty of people are opting for cars even before service cuts because mass transit is an unappealing option in the age of Covid. Used cars are fetching higher prices than ever. Some are calling the additional wheels on the road, Carmegeddon. ***** But fear not. Because we’re all about trying to stay hip (ha) and make you hip (ha) we have to introduce you to the word micromobility and how that trend might stave off Carmegeddon. Micromobility devices include bicycles, e-bikes, electric scooters, and electric skateboards.

While greater Queens had declines, Rockaway saw a 17% jump in prices and a 36% jump in closings from the previous quarter. Fresh ocean air and less density makes Rockaway the place to be. THANK YOU NYPD MAKES ROCKAWAY STOP Continued from Page 7 wanted to take their show of support beyond posting positive messages. “While everyone was screaming defund the police, I started a GoFundMe to refuel the police, she told the officers on Tuesday. “So far we’ve raised over $27,000. With that funding, Delfaus decided to use the Thank You NYPD movement to provide food for officers at every precinct across New York City. Tuesday’s visit to Transit District 23 was stop 35. “There is no New York City without the NYPD. So please stay safe out there and know you have tons of support. There are a lot more people out there that support you than don’t, Delfaus told the officers. Chief Fox came across the page after they shared a video in early summer of Tatyanna Timoshenko speaking to a counter protestor at a pro-police rally in Brooklyn. Fox re-
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2020 called the video in which a black man was confronting Timoshenko in an intense scene, but the man’s demeanor changed and softened after Timoshenko explained that her 23-year-old son, Russel Timoshenko, was killed on the job in 2007. Inspired by the video’s hopeful message, Fox reached out to those behind the Facebook page and asked how he could assist them. At the time, Thank You NYPD had made 15 visits to refuel officers at precincts across the city. When Fox got involved, he reached out to other family members of officers killed in the line of duty, who were more than willing to come out to show support during the stops at each precinct, and make them even more meaningful with something more than a meal. Sonia Cunningham, who came all the way from Texas, knows firsthand the importance of supporting police. Her son, Sgt. Keith Ferguson, died in the line of duty in January 2004. Cunningham spoke

of how the NYPD never forgot her, and how she wanted to pay it forward to them. “I want you to look at the color of my face, the black woman said. “There are a lot of us that support NYPD. I have a large family and we’re all about NYPD. Please do not feel discouraged or disrespected by the yahoos who are behaving poorly and encouraged by politicians. You have our support. More importantly, people of color are those who need the most support from NYPD. So please understand we are grateful, we are appreciative. Do not be deterred, keep doing what you’re doing. I will be out there along with others thanking you every single day because I was able to get through the loss of my son because NYPD, for 16 years, they never, ever, let me out of their sight. Maria Dziergowski, whose husband, Matthew, was killed in the line of duty in 1999, spoke on behalf of fallen officers. “We’re here on behalf of our loved ones that can’t speak
anymore to tell you how proud we are of you. If you’re watching the news, I know it can get to you. All of the naysayers and talking heads have something negative to say about the NYPD, but we’re representing the average New Yorker to tell you how much you’re loved, and we appreciate you, Dziergowski said. Timoshenko, the woman featured in the video that touched Chief Fox, was also there to share a few words of encouragement. “Thank you for everything that you do. You’re very important to me. I know a lot of people appreciate you. I’m your back, I’m your shoulders. I will always protect you. Please stay safe, I love you all, Timoshenko said. Asked how long Fox will continue to join in these stops with Thank You NYPD, he said, “Until police officers get the respect and the support that they deserve, we’ll continue to do these visits. To follow the Thank You NYPD page, head to www.facebook.com/Thankyounypd.fb

Rockaway Film Festival Returns – Remotely Rockaway Film Festival returns for its third year this October, starting Wednesday, October 21. Things, as you might guess, will be a bit different this year. According to founder Sam Fleischner and festival organizers, “the pandemic has forced us to reconsider how cinema spaces can take shape, and we have embraced the internet’s capacity for remote connection.” The entire program is free, and for five days starting October 21, the festival will broadcast a sequence of films online “guided by isolation and escapism, representing where our attention has been directed and redirected in 2020.” The films will be streamed
live via Twitch, which will be embedded on the festivals website, rockawayfilmfestival. com And on the website, you can check out this year's lineup and more details about the live-stream.

Red Truck With a Message Accidentally Set Ablaze On Thursday, October 8, a vehicle burst into flames on Rockaway Beach Boulevard between Beach 116th and Beach 115th Street at around 11:30 a.m. Traffic was shut down along the boulevard, but within a short time, FDNY arrived and got the fire under control. The red Ford vehicle was left completely damaged. According to the driver, John, the fire started due to a smoking incident. The man dropped a match after lighting a cigarette in the vehicle, which set a paper towel on fire. The driver suffered minor burns to his hands but was otherwise unharmed. Ac-
cording to the driver, this was not the first time he accidentally set a vehicle ablaze. The vehicle may look familiar as it was hard to miss being covered in anti-mask messages, among others. The driver utilized the vehicle to send political messages and recorded videos for his “Red Truck Series” on YouTube. Photo by Katie McFadden.

Community Board 14 October Meeting Recap By Marina Cregan
On Tuesday, October 13, Community Board 14 (CB14), convened for their October meeting via Zoom. With a total of 76 participants, community members were eager to hear the presentation provided by the Parks and Public Safety Committee, regarding the Arverne East Nature Preserve Project. The meeting began with a brief report from Chairwoman Dolores Orr. Orr relayed a message from Assemblywoman Stacy Pfeffer Amato, stating that anyone who has requested an absentee ballot may track their ballot from the time it has been mailed out, to when it has been received by the Board of Elections. Tracking of absentee ballots can be checked at nycabsentee.com. Orr also informed the board that early voting in Rockaway begins on Saturday, October 24, and will continue until Sunday, November 1, at the Rockaway YMCA.
Following Orr’s report, District Manager Jonathan Gaska spoke about the virtual meeting he attended regarding the city’s reevaluation plan for COVID-19 hot spots. Gaska reported that the number of positive test results for COVID-19 across the peninsula has increased. He stated that he has personally seen less community members wearing masks on and around the boardwalk, as well as much bigger crowds of

people together. If these numbers do not decrease, then the peninsula should expect much stricter citywide regulations regarding masks and social distancing laws. Gaska concluded his report by stating that since March, the City has spent a little over $4 billion in response to COVID-19. The meeting continued with Gaska reporting on behalf of CB14’s Budget Committee. Gaska reported on the Fiscal
Year 2020 Capital and Expense Priorities List. During CB14’s September meeting, the board proposed additions to be added to the Capital and Expense Report. Gaska stated that the request of planting trees along Beach Channel Drive from Beach 99th Street to Beach 113th Street was added to the list. He also stated that he added a request to fund and redesign the ferry pier on Beach 108th St. This will include slips for parking, as well as an addition of creating bathrooms at the pier. The final item added to the expense report was that there be a request to study and locate a tier 2 or tier 3 trauma center on the Rockaway peninsula. The motion to approve the Capital and Expense Budget as presented was approved unanimously by CB14. It should be noted that while these requests are made, not every item receives funding. The final presentation came Continued on page 14

COMMUNITY BOARD 14 Continued from Page 12 from the Parks and Public Safety Committee regarding the Arverne East Nature Preserve. The proposed Arverne East Nature Preserve will be located adjacent to the boardwalk from Beach 44th Street to Beach 56th Place, and will cover approximately 35 acres of land. On behalf of the Parks Dept. Landscape and Architecture Team, Kristin Reardon presented an overview of the nature preserve, as well as the preserve’s purpose. The goal of the project is to create 35 acres of new parkland for the benefit of the community, including a nature preserve. She stated that they want to preserve and enhance the native habitat that exists, improve access to the Rockaway boardwalk, and program the public space for community use. On Beach 44th Street there will be a multipurpose building, which will include a restroom and comfort station for community members, but mainly serve as a basis for operation
of the Parks Dept. staff. This site has been funded to provide two year-round staff members, as well as an additional two seasonal staff employees. The main purpose for this site is to connect all existing natural areas that have been damaged due to the dumping of debris, as well as refill those areas with different planting types to create this continuous habitat throughout the preserve. Additionally, they want to provide circulation and program use throughout the site. There will be a sidewalk perimeter surrounding the preserve which will connect to the boardwalk, allowing community members to walk from the boardwalk to the nature preserve. The intention of the walkway perimeter is to allow educational programs for community members to enjoy the different types of vegetation occurring within the preserve. Along these pathways, there will be a variety of seating, with the installment of educational notes on benches, which will provide information about the different plant
The Rockaway Times
types within the preserve, as well as a history regarding the site’s natural habitat. Reardon added that these pathways will be made of concrete and RPL pavement, as a way to prevent future flood damage, and will include lighting fixtures. There are many plans for how this space will be utilized. There will be ranger walks through and around the preserve for both school groups and community groups, as well as wildlife engagement activities for these groups. There will also be designated quiet walking pathways away from cars and bikes, for people who do not wish to walk on the boardwalk. Yoga and fitness classes are also envisioned for this space and will take place on the boardwalk on Beach 44th Street. In order for this proposal to commence, CB14 had to provide a letter of support to the Parks Department. However, CB14 members did not agree. While there were many objections expressed by CB14 members to the Arverne East Nature Preserve Project, the lack of
lighting to be provided on the site, the lack of parking, safety and security measures, and the assuredness of full time maintenance for the preserve were the most apparent concerns. Board members expressed that although this site is intended for day usage, that will not stop individuals from going to the preserve after hours. The necessity for more lighting is one of utmost importance. Additionally, with the lack of lighting and no guarantee for security cameras, there is no way for members to ensure the safety of children who could be potentially harmed while on the preserve. The meeting concluded with CB14 members voting against writing a letter in support of the Arverne East Nature Preserve Project. Board members asked Parks to consider their many suggestions regarding how to improve this site, and come back to present this proposal again, in hopes to see changes made to ensure the safety of Rockaway’s community members.

Oktoberfest Raffle Still Brewing
This time last year, St. Francis de Sales held its inaugural Oktoberfest event – one of the best parties of the year, if not the decade! More than 650 parishioners and members of the community attended the event, and everyone was looking forward to how the planning committee was going to top last year’s party! Well, by now we know that pandemics and parties don’t fare well together, and St. Francis was forced to cancel this year’s event, losing tens of thousands of dollars in planned fundraising revenue.

But the committee wouldn’t settle for defeat and decided to carry on with the Oktoberfest Raffle. Last year’s prize was huge (think brand-newcar-huge!) and this year’s prize is expected to be even larger! Tickets can be purchased for $100 each through the rectory (718-634-6464). All proceeds will allow St. Francis to continue to provide much needed services to our community. The drawing will take place from the Rectory porch at 3pm on Halloween. Thank you for your support!

Maintaining Equilibrium Chances are nowadays, you may be feeling out of whack. We are not in our comfort zones even if we are safe and healthy. Too much uncertainty. I would like to share some learnings from the kind and compassionate Buddhist nun, Pema Chödrön which could give us some help to living right now and maintaining equilibrium. First one is a practice she calls “compassionate abiding.” I guided this in yoga class this morning and got great feedback. This practice uses the medium of the breath. We bring
forth many breath practices in this column, because breathing in different ways really supports our health in body, mind and heart. It goes like this: sit and check in with yourself— what is the negative feeling that is there, whether it be right up front or a little hidden? Fear? Anxiety? A feeling of being on edge? Loneliness? Just identify one at this time as it is certainly possible that there are more than one nowadays! Close your eyes. Begin to tune in to your natural breath, the rhythm of your natural breath,
then begin to elongate the inhales and exhales so you are breathing deeply and fully. Then call up that negative feeling. Say to yourself: breathing in fear (or whatever it is), breathing out relief. Breathing in fear, breathing out relief. Repeat many rounds of this breath, feeling your body rise as you breathe in the difficult feeling, and gently fall as you breathe out relief. Then come back to your natural breath. Another Pema teaching is “collaborating with the world,” instead of resisting what is happening, especially now. So much going on in the world, and in our United States. And these occurrences trigger difficult feelings like the ones mentioned above. So rather than resisting and not acknowledging them, holding the difficult feelings without panicking is her method, in a way, of collaborating with the world. It is OK to have difficult feelings. She asks us to allow that whole part of human experience and not try to shift away from the difficult parts. This way of think-
Page 17 ing is a powerful tool during these times. As she says, we are in a challenge zone. It is what it is. So why not hold the feelings, expand and then use the breath practice above for relief. The relief is comforting and consoling but may not be permanent. That is why we could accept Pema’s urging to allow ourselves to hold the difficult feelings, be with them and release through the breath. This reminds me one of the Niyamas in our yoga philosophy "santosha,” which translated means “contentment.” It is really about acceptance and embracing whatever our feelings and state of being are at this moment in time. That’s where the word “contentment” comes in. When we allow what is in our feeling body, a softening happens, and we get some relief. So, these are different ways of maintaining our equilibrium - a calmer state of mind. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be compassionate. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

ROCKAWAY MUSIC & ARTS COUNCIL DISTRIBUTES FUNDS By Sharon Gabriel
One of the first creative organizations in Rockaway, The Rockaway Music & Arts Council which began in the 1950s, when humorist Sam Levenson was one of the founding fathers (Sam lived on Beach 147th St.), closed its doors a few years ago when it was no longer feasible to continue due to the high cost needed to provide our Summer Picnic Concerts, and our wellknown Fall Festival at Riis Park and Ft. Tilden became prohibitable. While we did have funds for backup, the Board of the RMAC decided, after 50 some years, to make gifts of our funds to local music and arts organizations as well as organizations in the surrounding area. One of the organizations we chose was The Friends of the 59th Street Playground Association. We were in touch with
Florence Ferguson and Sharon Gabriel .
Florence Ferguson, President of the Playground Association and presented her with a financial gift from the RMAC to further the work they are doing
to help upgrade and improve the playground for the children. While there are several new playgrounds in Rockaway, the playground at 59th
Street needs more work and the children need a safe place to meet and play. The City is in the process of upgrading the park, but funds are scarce and so the RMAC decided to step in to help. Over the past several months, funds have been distributed to the following arts organizations: Rockaway Artists Alliance, Rockaway Theatre Company and the Brooklyn Watercolor Society. Additional gifts were made to The Rise Center on Beach 58th and Rockaway Beach Boulevard, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (Joseph Mure's Little North Pole) and Angels for Mistreated Animals. The President of the RMAC, Stephen Yaeger, and the officers want to thank the Rockaway community for their generosity and support over the many years we were in existence.

Trauma
Being involved in a trauma event means having an injury that requires prompt medical attention, which includes medical examination, testing, and treatment. Trauma can be caused by many types of injuries, whether intentional or unintentional, and may include an emotionally distressing experience or physical injury. Firearm injuries, motor vehicle accidents, and falls are among the most common types of trauma. Young children are more likely to be affected by drowning, while elderly patients are more likely to have ground-level falls (falls while sitting or standing). Trauma can be a frightening and overwhelming experience and
can range from minor injuries to life-threatening conditions. Major hospitals and university hospitals are more likely to have trauma teams. For example, the nearest trauma center to the Rockaways is Jamaica Hospital. Trauma teams are expensive to maintain and must have on-site dedicated teams made up of specialized physicians, surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. EMS personnel and paramedics may activate a trauma team from the field or hospital emergency staff may do so upon arrival at the facility. Trauma team activation causes the team members to assemble at the trauma bay of the emergency depart-
ment in anticipation of providing immediate care to the injured person(s) upon arrival at the hospital. Injured patients are typically transported by ambulance or helicopter to the nearest appropriate trauma center. In the early moments after a traumatic injury, before a patient reaches the hospital, bystanders are often the first responders. The best way to initially help is to call 911. If there is significant bleeding, direct pressure can be applied to the area until help arrives. If an extremity is bleeding, a tourniquet may be employed. Commercial tourniquets and training on their use are available through Stop the Bleed courses approved by the American College of Surgeons (www.stopthebleed.org). Bystanders who are trained in CPR or advanced life support can assist the patient until EMS personnel arrive. EMS personnel evaluate the patient’s blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, and severity of injuries, and address any life-threatening injuries, such as the inability to breathe or bleeding, at the scene before transport. Sometimes an oxygen
The Rockaway Times mask or breathing tube may be required. A pelvic binder may be placed if a broken pelvis is suspected. Likewise, a cervical collar and a long backboard is often used to stabilize potential spine injuries. Often, EMS personnel may place an intravenous (IV) line for fluid support before or during transport. The patient is strapped to a rigid plastic backboard for transport to the hospital where the trauma team takes over. Heart, oxygen, and blood pressure monitors are used by EMS during transport. At the hospital, it is imperative to learn as much about the patient’s medical history as possible. Often, the patient may be unconscious, which is why anyone who has any medical condition(s) and/or takes any regular medication(s) needs to have that information with them at all times. Wearing a medical alert bracelet or tag is also helpful, as is carrying information on family, caregivers, or both. Focus on Elder Law: MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT: IS IT TIME TO CHANGE PLANS? By Nancy J. Brady, RN, Esq., Partner, Brady & Bader LLP, Attorneys at Law
Medicare's Open Enrollment Period, during which you can freely enroll in or switch plans, runs from October 15 to December 7. If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to start shopping around to see whether your current choices are still the best ones for you. During this period, you may enroll in a Medicare Part D (prescription drug) plan or, if you currently have a plan, you may change plans. During this seven-week period if you so choose, you can return to traditional Medicare (Parts A and B) from a Medicare Advantage (Part C, managed care) plan, enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, or change Advantage plans. Beneficiaries can go to www.medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-
633-4227) to make changes in their Medicare prescription drug and health plan coverage. According to the New York Times, few Medicare beneficiaries take advantage of Open Enrollment, but of those who do, nearly half cut their premiums by at least five percent. Even beneficiaries who have been satisfied with their plans in 2020 should review their choices for 2021, as both premiums and plan coverage can fluctuate from year to year. Are the doctors you use still part of your Medicare Advantage plan’s provider network? Have any of the prescriptions you take been dropped from your prescription plan’s list of covered drugs (the “formulary”)? Could you save money with the same by switching to a different plan? For answers to questions like these, carefully look over the plan's "Annual Notice of
Change" letter you received from Medicare. Prescription drug plans can change their premiums, deductibles, the list of drugs they cover, and their plan rules for covered drugs, exceptions, and appeals. Medicare Advantage plans can change their benefit packages, as well as their provider networks. Remember that fraud perpetrators will inevitably use the Open Enrollment Period to try to gain access to individuals' personal financial information. Medicare beneficiaries should never give their personal information out to anyone making unsolicited phone calls selling Medicare-related products or services or showing up on their doorstep uninvited. If you think you've been a victim of fraud or identity theft, contact Medicare. Here are more resources for navigating the Open Enroll-
ment Period: Medicare Plan Finder, which helps you find a plan to match your needs: medicare.gov/find-a-plan; Medicare coverage options: medicare.gov/medicarecoverageoptions The 2020 Medicare & You handbook, which all Medicare beneficiaries should have received. The reason for the run was up to the runner. Participants had the opportunity to run for whatever cause was important to them.

Covid-19 has wreaked havoc on everything from businesses to schools and even organizations fighting causes. Everything we do has to include Covid-19 protocols. Many organizations have started to think out of the box just to keep up with the Covid-19 requirements and to still remain diligent in the fight to eradicate crimes and disease. The month of October has many organizations out there doing just that and a recent run/walk strived to bring awareness to several issues. Domestic Violence Awareness, Breast Cancer Awareness, and Mental Health Awareness are just some of the issues people try to highlight in October. Domestic violence is on the uprise but according to reports, the amount reported is on the decline. Statistics from NYPD (DCPI) reveal that yearto-date as of Sunday, October 11, the seven major Domestic
Queen Esther is an active community coordinator. Her work in the community is to stop violence. She is also the CEO/President of Queens Royal Priest Hood with Roselyn Mason being the vice president/ director. On Saturday, Queen Esther ran for Domestic Violence Awareness. Queen Esther knows about violence firsthand. She was born premature a month before her mom’s due date. Her dad caused her mother to go into labor after he beat her. The abuse Queen Esther endured was physical, and involved verbal mental and sexual abuse as a child. Both she and her brother were very violent towards one another due to atmosphere they grew up in. Fast forward, after Queen Esther found God, they both recognized they needed to make a change in this pattern of violence. She helped herself first and now she is a force to be

RUN/WALK Continued from Page 28 reckoned with. She is a survivor. Queen Esther has been making a change in the community that she lives in and beyond. Her organization reaches from NYC to Maryland, Washington, and Virginia. The Humanities IV School, which was also a sponsor of the run/walk, walked for Mental Health Awareness. The school’s curriculum includes regular advisement and offers art and dance movement therapy as well. Community partnership and mentorship is important to Hannah Khen, the Principal at Humanities in the Rockaways. By having community partnership, they are able to work with others that can provide what they might not be able to. If you would like to learn more on their efforts and the school please emai:l create4hum@charternevisions. org When it comes to Domestic Violence, if it affects one, it
should affect all of us. Everyone who has been through it in their own lives knows we have to continue to help the voiceless. Without your help, their voices may never be heard, and tragedy will be the outcome. Domestic Violence is a silent crime because of isolation and fear. Queen Esther said it best, “Just because you heard someone got killed by someone because of domestic violence, it does not mean the suspect was not a victim first.” I say to the abuser, get yourself some help, it is out there just for the asking. Lastly, how can one begin to help in the midst of Covid-19? Check on those you know are most vulnerable. Attend classes online to learn how to identify abuse and have resources for those who need to get out. Join your local groups and get involved in an event using the Covid-19 protocols. Call 911 or the abuse hotline 1-800-621-Hope. Your response can save a life. Be a part of the solution to create a better world.

SBS Offers New Podcast The NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) announced a new limited series podcast, WE NYC & VCs off the Record, focusing on supporting women entrepreneurs of color by elevating their stories and offering practical information to start and grow a business in a post-COVID era. “Women of color have historically been overlooked and left out of the entrepreneurship ecosystem,” Jonnel Doris, Commissioner of the NYC Department of Small Business Services, said. “We’ve partnered with VCs off the Record, powered by WOCstar Fund, to highlight women’s voices and provide them with a unique opportunity to access the critical tools they need to succeed.” The eight-part podcast takes listeners directly to female founders of color as they share their journey toward grow-
ing a successful business enterprise. From venture capitalists to CEOs, these women are leaders in their industries and will provide first-hand accounts of how they reached their goals. Host Gayle Jennings-O’Byrne brings these one-on-one conversations directly to aspiring women entrepreneurs, covering funding options, an entrepreneur's capability to attract capital and more. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, WE NYC & VCs off the Record will kick off the podcast launch with the Co-Founder of Eight Sleep, Alexandra Zatarain, who will talk about entering the tech field as an outsider and how her company solved a problem in her own home. New episodes will be released every Wednesday, beginning October 28, for free on Spotify and Anchor.fm.

Wrestle Talk WRESTLING TERMS By Eric Jayden
Results from the AEW Dynamite Show on October 7, 2020 from Daily's Place in Jacksonville, Florida: Brian Cage defeated Will Hobbs. FTR defeated TH2. Cody defeated Mr. Brodie Lee to capture the TNT Championship. Big Swole defeated Serena Deebs. Chris Jericho/Jake Hager defeated Chaos Project. The Match of the Night was Cody vs Mr. Brodie Lee for the TNT Championship. I actually enjoyed this match which had some solid wrestling and good back and forth action. I'm always impressed with Cody's wrestling abilities and how he works a crowd. In the end, Cody defeated Mr. Brodie Lee to capture the TNT Championship. This is a question that I receive constantly in my email inbox, "What do wrestling terms or language mean?" So, in today's edition we take a look into the lan-
guage of wrestling. Professional wrestling has its roots going back to the early days of traveling carnivals and circuses. In an effort the keep wrestling secrets concealed, wrestlers created their own language, often referred to as "Carny Language or Speaking Carny" to communicate with each other during matches. As wrestling progressed throughout the years, wrestlers continued to protect the business by evolving the wrestling language. In recent years, widespread discussion on the internet has popularized many wrestling terms. Here are some of the most popular terms: Kayfabe - stands for the presentation of professional wrestling being entirely legitimate and unscripted. This term is used frequently to protect the secrets of the wrestling business. Heel(s) - a person(s) who is considered a villain and are hated by the wrestling fans. Babyface(s) - a person(s) who is
considered heroic and are cheered by the wrestling fans. A baby face can also be referred as "The Face." Blading - is when a wrestler intentionally cuts themselves to provoke bleeding during a match. This is done to highlight the legitimacy of the match. Also referred to as juicing, gigging and getting color. Booker - is the person in charge a setting up the wrestling matches and storylines. Angle - a term used for a storyline that is the driving force behind pro wrestling. Bump - is a term referring to the act of a wrestler hitting the ground or mat. Gimmick - is a character that is played by the wrestler which defines the way he acts, how he dresses and whether he wrestles as a Heel or Babyface. This term is also used to refer to wrestling props use on a show. All these terms were created in an effort not only to keep the excitement of professional wrestling alive
but also the "Suspension of Disbelief." When you watch a professional wrestling match, you want to believe in the good guy or you might want to believe in the bad guy and that's what makes wrestling exciting. You can lose yourself in the fight of Good vs Evil or Evil versus Evil, whichever you decide just remember to have fun. The question of the week comes from Darryl H. in Rockaway Park he asked, "When do you see pro wrestling shows coming back to the big arenas?" That's a great question Darryl and unfortunately, we might not see live wrestling events again in big arenas until this pandemic passes over. With no clear end to this pandemic, I can only hope live pro wrestling returns to the big arenas by the middle of 2021. We're just going to have to wait and see. Keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com. You can follow me on Facebook @ericjayden and on Twitter @followthebadguy. Have a great week!
