Pols Call For Safety Measures Following Cyclist Death in Broad Channel

On Sunday, October 13, 65-year-old Bogdan Darmetko, an avid cyclist from Corona, was out enjoying a ride along a regular route—Cross Bay Boulevard—when he was tragically hit by an SUV and killed in Broad Channel. Now local elected officials are calling for action.

In late September, Cross Bay Boulevard was milled from Howard Beach to Broad Channel, and has sat unpaved since, leaving rough road conditions, that are even more difficult to navigate without traffic lanes along the strip. Darmetko was riding northbound on a milled portion of the road when he was struck by an SUV traveling in the same direction around East 4th on Sunday afternoon. As Darmetko was riding, he made a left into the path of the car and was struck by the front driver side of the vehicle.

mained on the scene and is not expected to be charged. Darmetko is the 25th cyclist to be killed by a driver in New York City this year.

The Rockaway Times reached out to the Department of Transportation on Tuesday, October 15, to ask when the road will be repaved. According to a spokesperson, the DOT is currently in the process of repaving the road in Howard Beach, but the section in Broad Channel won’t be repaved for another two weeks.

Beyond the general repaving, local elected officials are calling on the DOT to do more. On Tuesday, Councilman Eric Ulrich, State Sen. Joseph P. Addabbo and Assembly Member Stacey Pheffer Amato wrote a letter to DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg, asking the agency to "take the appropriate steps to keep cyclists, pedestrians and motorists safe." Among their requests are protected bike lanes on Cross Bay Boulevard, between Broad Channel and Howard Beach; as well as a stoplight near the vicinity where Darmetko was killed.

"This particular area in Broad Channel has long been a hotspot for speeding, and it is crucial DOT takes the appropriate steps to keep cyclists, pedestrians and motorists safe," the letter reads. "While we can never take away the pain and suffering felt by those affected by Darmetko's untimely death, we can prevent another tragedy from occurring along this notoriously dangerous

roadway."

Besides this latest death, the officials cited several other recent incidents along Cross Bay Blvd. to explain why more needs to be done. According to the letter, since January 2016, there have been 273 crashes along the road, injuring eight cyclists, four pedestrians and 82 motorists.

Last year alone, there were 68 crashes, injuring three cyclists and 22 motorists. In December, a 74-year-old woman was killed in the crosswalk at 159th Avenue and Cross Bay Boulevard.

"This roadway is well known in the community as a hotspot for speeding and is notoriously dangerous. DOT must evaluate these hazards immediately," Councilman Eric Ulrich said.

"My thoughts and prayers go out to Darmetko's family and friends during this difficult time. While we can never give back what was taken from you, we vow to do everything in our power to ensure Bogdan did not die in vain."

Last week’s waves were not for the faint of heart. As nor’easter-turned-subtropical storm Melissa churned way off the coast of the mid-Atlantic and northeast, she provided what some called an unprecedented swell for Rockaway, making for some of the best waves seen in years.

With swell predictions over six feet, few were brave enough to take on the first of the powerful waves that churned up on Thursday, October 10. Some

who did take on the challenge wound up learning a tough lesson from Mother Nature.

There were plenty of wipeouts and it was reported that a local surf shop that rents boards, saw more than 10 broken in the big surf. However, as the weekend went on and conditions calmed down, making for more ideal October surf that locals dream of, surfers showed up in full force to enjoy the action.

wait eleven months. But, it was for good news.

I cast my curse on the airwaves: I'm putting a curse on them. The Dodgers will never win the World Series again!

I don't know what came over me.... maybe it was that they had sued us personally, that they had abandoned Brooklyn, that their arrogance was colossal to the end... but for that one

Post script: The Brooklyn Dodger Sports Bar has gone the way of Ebbets Field. Ron Russo is still practicing law and remains a great friend. And the Los Angeles Dodgers play under a curse. Oh, and I’ll lift it.

But it’ll come at a price. Until then, up yours, LA.

The Dodgers Are Cursed I owned a bar once. If you ever get the urge to do the same, I’ll do my best to talk you out of it.

Anyway, with the Yankees and playoff baseball underway, it’s that time of year for me to celebrate another year of Los Angeles Dodgers heartbreak. The LA Dodgers haven’t won the World Series in almost three decades, despite being an odds-makers’ favorite several times.

They can have the best pitching and hit the most homeruns but they can’t get by the hex, the whammy, the evil eye, the curse of The Brooklyn Dodger—which, was my doing.

And there’s proof. It’s on tape.

A million years ago, my brother and I were trying to run a gin mill in Brooklyn. Which was a handful enough. We had a couple of coke heads for employees, who were different than a couple of committed thieves on staff. You’d never know what calamity awaited. Like the time the toilet got backed up. Oh, that was a regular thing but not the time we had to fish a full set of teeth out of the toilet in the ladies’ room. (No one ever claimed them). We ran out of beer on St. Patrick’s Day. Another time we were in danger of having the place dismantled by the crowd when a faulty TV connection almost didn’t air a Mike Tyson fight. The usual bar stuff.

And then, on a windy day, our 25-foot sign blew right off the front of the building and sailed half a block down Third Avenue in Bay Ridge. We chased it down, this flying carpet with royal blue lettering, people on the sidewalk laughing the whole time. What a couple of maroons, we were.

And just as the sign company finished putting the damn thing back on the storefront, the process server arrived with a Cease and Desist order. Some law firm was telling us we couldn’t use the name on our sign: THE BROOKLYN DODGER. We had done trademark searches and believed we were fully within our rights to use the name, especially since the Dodgers baseball team had abandoned Brooklyn in 1957.

That didn’t stop Major League Baseball and the team in Los Angeles from flexing their muscles and telling us we had to change the name of our bar.

Change the name in a week or we’re suing.

We were either too young, too dumb, or had the kind of Brooklyn cajones that makes you say Up Yours before you have time to think, because we didn’t cave. We went to the media and politicians. We got great support (except from that rat Mario Cuomo, who, guess what — went to work for the law firm that sued us).

We were crushing them on the public relations side but they were taking their swings at us with fat wallets and more lawyers than a baseball roster.

They hired investigators to find dirt on us; they sued us personally. The best we could do was put up an attorney who called us out of the blue to work pro bono (that’s free).

We refused to cave and the case went to trial. It was a complete mismatch. Ron Russo, our guy, kicked their ass.

The trial ended after four days with a thud, though. The judge said she'd render a verdict when she felt like it. We had to

***** We’re all flooded with news so sometimes things slip by or don’t get the attention they deserve. It was front page news when British athlete and neurologist Sir Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute mile (a feat thought impossible) in 1954. Similarly, many thought breaking two hours in a marathon was beyond current human capabilities. Eliud Kipchoge, from Kenya, made history Saturday, becoming the first person to complete a marathon in under two hours at an event in Vienna, Austria.

He clocked in at one hour, 59 minutes and 40 seconds. The course was designed to give him the best chance (including having pacesetters, also known as rabbits to speed the pace) but that doesn’t diminish the amazing feat.

***** We mentioned Artie Minson a few weeks back. He’s the new CEO of WeWork who has Rockaway ties. We incorrectly stated that he attended Loyola High School but a St. Francis de Sales and Regis High School grad, living in Singapore, wrote to tell us that Minson is a Regis guy. Sorry for the Jesuit mix-up! ***** The waves were huge last week, the biggest in years. On Thursday around 5 p.m. there was one, just one surfer in the water at Beach 88th. And he was not surfing. He was sitting on his board well beyond the wave break, probably wondering how he was going to get in.

Funding the Future RICHARDS ALLOCATES MORE THAN $21M FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS

Several Rockaway and other southeast Queens schools are getting a big pick-me-up due to funding allocated by Councilman Donovan Richards. On Tuesday, October 15, Richards paid a visit to the Beach Channel Educational Campus to announce more than $21.5 million in funding for more than 29 schools in District 31.

In front of an audience that included principals and other representatives from area schools that received funding, students and other officials, Councilman Richards proudly discussed an accomplishment that will positively impact all of them.

Richards has been able to allocate $21.505 million in capital funding grants for area schools, made possible by an additional $10 million from the Downtown Far Rockaway rezoning negotiations.

“This is one of the most enjoyable parts of the job. When you can come back and invest in the future, and when I say the future, that is our young people who are here. You look at historically, how a lot of our schools have been underfunded, how the resources have not reached every part of the city, but in particular, in parts of Queens and parts of the Rockaways,� Richards said. “Our zip codes should not determine the quality of education, should not determine whether

our schools have computers or not, whether you have a better facility or not. Everybody deserves to have a good, quality education and quality infrastructure in their schools and quality technologies. We made a commitment, that whatever we see is not right, we’re going to try to fix it.�

Many local schools received funding averaging at about $250K, mainly for technology upgrades. However, other schools and campuses, many with innovative ideas for how to

use the funding, received much more. Among schools receiving grants were Village Academy in Far Rockaway, which received $2.9 million for a greenhouse and technology upgrades; $2.65 million for a woodshop, a robotics program and complete library upgrades at the Far Rockaway Educational Campus; $1.5 million to P.S. 104 for technology and park upgrades; and $2.5 million for the Beach Channel Educational Campus for a new weight room, air conditioning for the cafeterias and technology upgrades.

Both cafeterias were unairconditioned, and with these funds, we will be able to ensure that both cafeterias will have A/C. In addition, there’s also other funding that will be appropriated for the weight room and various technology.

It is very much needed. Our students will be able to have stateof-the-art facilities and compete with other schools that have different levels of facilities. It’s often said that in Rockaway, we’re often forgotten, but I want to say because of Councilman Richards, we haven’t been forgotten.”

A senior student and football player from the Beach Channel campus spoke about how the upgrades will benefit future classes and teams. “We often talk about how we want to leave the program better than it was when we came in. When we came here, we didn’t really have anything, the weight room

Principal William Johnson, of the Academy of Medical Technology on the Far Rockaway campus said, “‘Far’ is in our name, but Councilman, we’re never too far away for you and we appreciate that you always find your way to us. Over time, we’ve been basically reconstructing our building, which was built in 1929. With the councilman’s help, we’ve been able to rebuild parts of the building basically brick by brick.”

Upon sharing the good news of the funding, Richards told the crowd that he’s going to continue to fight for more and urged the school representatives to continue to collaborate and determine which projects they may want funded going forward.

“We’re not done yet. We’re just getting started. I have a feeling we will come back for more announcements pretty soon,” Richards said.

Help Rockaway RISE With Sandy Anniversary Planting For the anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) is bringing people of all ages together to create a natural protective buffer for the Rockaway community on Saturday, October 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The start location will be Beach 44th Street and the beach/ boardwalk.

As we learned from the storm, the natural vegetation and dunes that exist off our shores served as a protective buffer to the homes and businesses that exist in these areas. Many of these dunes were compromised by the storm and need to be replenished to be effective.

Families and people of all ages are welcome to participate in this dune restoration project. Students can receive community service hours. No

registration is required. This event is rain or shine, so please dress accordingly.

The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance is now also known as RISE, (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity) and is headquartered at 58-03 Beach Channel Drive, a former firehouse. The RISE center “celebrates the creative, cultural, and environmental health of the Rockaway peninsula.”

Amanda Christianson of Only You By Amanda RT: You mentioned that you moved to Rockaway three years ago. Why? AC: I moved here from Long Beach because of the community’s urban beach scene, and my love for the ocean and nature the community is surrounded by. It really inspires me.

Rockaway Park resident Amanda Christianson is known on the local art scene for her amazing talent as a multi-faceted artist. She even won the Rockaway Artists Alliance Viewer’s Choice Award for her work.

However, what is even more endearing about Christianson,

who is also an art teacher children, including those with special-needs, is her passion for art education, despite having dyslexia (a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words). In the following Q&A, Christianson reveals how her passion for the ocean, nature and teaching children fuels the fire in her creations.

RT: How long have you been creating art?

AC: I’ve been drawing since I was a baby. I grew up with the learning disability, dyslexia, so my stress release came from creating art. Finding the hook of art really saved me, and my experiences as a child with a disability led me to become an art teacher for children, including those with special needs. At the school that I teach, I even run a special-needs art club for kids to have an outlet.

AC: I will draw on anything. At one point, I started doodling on shoes in high school because I was bored, and from there, friends asked me to do work and it took off. Then through college, I was doing all kinds of work on clothes for people, and it turned into this side business.

I like the challenge because I love making items uniquely personal for people. For example, at the markets that I vend, I would have general sizes of the items, and take custom orders from folks who are, for example, interested in customizing a particular sneaker like a pair of Vans or Air Force Ones, or a jacket. However, I am a fine artist, so my sculptures and paintings are what I present in exhibitions, such as with the Rockaway Artists Alliance,

AC: I graduated from Hofstra University with a Bachelor of Science in art education. Right after graduation, I got a job teaching at a high school. From there I got my master’s degree in studio art with concentrations in painting and color theory from Long Island University. I presently teach at Hofstra as an adjunct professor in Art Education.

No one knew that I was dyslexic at that point, so school was very rough for me in the beginning. I felt very awkward until I was finally diagnosed with dyslexia. However, my saving grace was art because I so good at it. I guess it’s because of the way I perceive things in a tactile sense. I was fortunate to have teachers who brushed aside the fact that I was not good in other subjects like math and instead, recognized and nurtured my potential for art. They focused on my strengths, not my weaknesses, which built my self-esteem as a student, and I guess they inspired me to want to return that favor to other children. Plus creating art has a therapeutic quality. I view it as a holistic type of education.

National Grid Ordered To Connect Some Customers Held Up by Moratorium

Check. On October 11, Governor Andrew Cuomo and the Public Service Commission made a major move in National Grid’s chess game of holding customers hostage until the new Williams natural gas pipeline is built.

The utility company faces millions of dollars in penalties for failing to connect existing residential customers with natural gas as required by the Public Service Law and was directed to immediately connect more than 1,100 customers that were previously denied service.

Additionally, the Department of Public Service (DPS) is expanding its investigation to examine whether the company properly planned for reliably meeting the needs of its customers given that the utility faces supply constraints this winter. In May, after Williams’

Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) project was rejected by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, National Grid announced that it could no longer process new or expanded applications for natural gas in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island. However, Cuomo argued that even if the pipeline were built, it would not be in service until December 2020 anyway. “There are alternative forms of gas delivery beyond pipelines; their failure to adequately anticipate this issue and provide for it will immediately be under review,” a press release from Cuomo’s office read.

"It is the fundamental responsibility of our utilities to provide reliable service," Governor Cuomo said in a press release.

"National Grid has acted in bad faith throughout this process— first by denying over 1,100 eligible customers with service and

now by failing to fulfill its core responsibility. Today, National Grid is being ordered to immediately connect those 1,100 customers, and I have directed DPS to expand their ongoing investigation to include potential negligence in not preparing for the months ahead. Make no mistake, New York will hold National Grid accountable."

Upon the preliminary conclusion of the Public Service Commission's investigation, PSC Chairman John Rhodes issued an order to show cause directing National Grid to immediately connect 1,157 residential and small commercial customers, and to implement an alternative supply and demand reduction plan to ensure the safety and reliability of the gas system.

The order also commences a penalty proceeding against the utility for alleged violations of the Public Service Law. "With the winter heating sea-

son beginning, the Department of Public Service has determined that immediate action is warranted to address the customer hardships created by National Grid's unwarranted denial of service for 1,157 of its customers in New York City and Long Island,” John Rhodes, Chair of the Public Service Commission said. “The law requires utilities to provide gas service without unreasonable qualifications or lengthy delay when sufficient gas supply exists, which the order alleges is the case for these previously existing customers of National Grid who found themselves suddenly cut off from gas without adequate warning and preparation."

However, National Grid insists the pipeline is still necessary. “With the current regional natural gas capacity constraints, long-term guaranteed supplies are still needed to connect customers and to maintain the safety and reliability of the gas system for all customers.”

By Monday, October 14, National Grid announced that they were following through with the order for now. ”We’ve begun the process of contacting and re-connecting natural gas service to residential customers in Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties who were previously disconnected from our system more than two years

ago, no longer accounted for in our supply portfolio and denied re-connection under our current connection restriction guidelines,” National Grid New York’s president John Bruckner said.

While more than 1,100 customers will likely get their gas hookups, there are still more than 2,600 potential new customers being left in the cold as a result of the ongoing moratorium. Those ordered to receive connections were customers who either moved or turned off service while performing renovations and were then denied when they tried to reconnect service.

Meanwhile, anti-pipeline activists such as Sane Energy Group are continuing the fight by asking the Public Service Commission to help New York residents get off the grid. On Thursday, October 17, they’ll be attending PSC’s monthly meeting to thank the Commission for its latest order against National Grid and to demand that they expand funding for all residents to have affordable access to renewable heating and cooling, and energy efficiency.

Lou Gehrig’s Disease - ALS I have been a (long-suffering) Mets' fan since the team began.

But unlike most Yankees' fans who hate the Mets, I don’t hate the Yankees, I just don’t watch them. But as a baseball fan, I do marvel at the rich history of the Yankees' teams and their great players like Ruth, Maris, Mantle, and Jackson. And of course, the colorful characters like Billy Martin. One of their greatest was “The Iron Man,” Lou Gehrig, who played his last game 80 years ago. He played 2,130 consecutive games from 1925 to 1939. He took himself out on May 2, 1939 because he had developed progressive leg and arm weakness.

He stumbled over curbstones

and dropped objects he was holding. He sought medical care at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. It was there that he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. He died two years later, and ALS has also been called Lou Gehrig’s disease since.

The term ALS was coined in 1874 by the French neurologist Jean-Marie Charcot. It’s also been called Charcot’s disease.

The name comes from the Greek words a, meaning “no,” myo, meaning “muscle,” and trophia, meaning “nourishment.” Sclerosis refers to “hardening” and “scarring” of the spinal cord due to the death of neurons. The

symptoms were first described in 1824 by Charles Bell. The disease kills neurons, or nerve cells, that control voluntary muscles. Early symptoms are muscle stiffness and weakness, twitching, and atrophy (muscle wasting). Later symptoms include inability to speak, swallow, and eventually breathe without assistance. The cause is unknown in about 90% of cases and five to 10% are inherited from parents (familial ALS).

Over 20 genes linked to familial ALS have been discovered. Risk factors include smoking, contact sports, and head injuries. Age of onset is about 50 in inherited cases and 60 in other, non-familial cases, although it does occur in younger people, even teenagers.

There is no cure for ALS. There are medications that may extend life, but usually only for a few months. As the disease progresses, wheelchairs, ventilators, and feeding tubes become necessary.

Average survival is two to four years, although in some cases it can be considerably longer, as it was for Stephen Hawking. Death is usually due to respiratory failure or pneumonia.

The Rockaway Times Lou Gehrig’s tragic story has an important lesson for all of us.

The lesson comes not from his diagnosis and treatment, but rather from the grace and dignity he showed while facing a fatal illness. This was most evident on July 4, 1939 at Yankee Stadium on “Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day.” The stadium was packed with over 61,000 fans, and he received honor and recognition from his teammates and manager.

Babe Ruth was present, as was Lou’s wife and his parents. In his speech to the fans, he said, “Fans, for the past two weeks, you have been reading about a bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.”

His speech focused on the positive and not the negative. He focused on things that give life meaning and value. If you’ve never seen “Pride of the Yankees,” an old movie that tells his life story, I recommend that you watch it. It’s a wonderful film, although a bit of a tear-jerker.

Gratitude is Attitude Sunday is a day of rest, relaxation and renewal in my house. It is a day I try not to work, except if you call writing this column work. I am grateful for this column because it encourages me to reflect on what helps someone become happy and content. When speaking to my daughter, who is a very positive and grateful person, she said, “gratitude is attitude.” With this statement, I became inspired to write once again about how important it is to have gratitude in your life. It improves the qual-

ity of your thoughts and actions. "Thank you" is a powerful mantra.

Often you will meet someone who has difficulty finding gratitude in their life, and so their attitude becomes one of bitterness and negativity. It is hard for them to get out of their own way to see the sun shining through on a gray day.

I often wonder what if they were to wake up each day with an intention to be grateful?

What if this were their last day on earth? Would they regret all the times they didn’t know

how to live in the moment of gratitude for the now?

Feeling blessed when you have lost someone can seem impossible and unattainable. Especially, if it is an untimely death. Perhaps, at this time, you are disheartened and so sad. Allowing yourself time to grieve, cry and be sad is something that may help. I have heard of much loss in the past few weeks and it breaks my heart. The only thing I can offer is prayers and offer my sincere condolences. There is much sadness, and maybe those of us who are grateful can help lift the ones who are in a bad place at this moment.

I don’t know how one moves on, but I do know it is necessary to accept, forgive and carry on with life. You are a warrior and can help others in the future. Sometimes a hardship can turn into a blessing. At least this is what I have been told when I experienced loss and it turned out to be true.

Breathing with ease and letting go of any anxieties or worries will help you find

Page 29 gratitude. Close your eyes for a few moments and be with your breath. Let it breathe your body, mind and spirit.

Feel it, listen to it and know you are never alone. Think of one thing you are grateful for and stay there for a few moments. You will find great comfort and ease in your life by connecting to your breath and a positive mantra. Breathe in, thank you, breathe out, grateful.

I am grateful for all my teachers in life. My parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, husband, children, friends, neighbors, colleagues, students, neighbors, strangers and spiritual leaders. It is a blessing to share space with each and every one of you. I am forever grateful for the lessons in life.

May you be blessed with good friends and a close family. Life is short. It can be beautiful.

Find one thing every morning to be thankful for and then increase your gratitude list.

May you be happy, peaceful, healthy and free of suffering.

Rockaway Learns About Renewables Before Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that National Grid would have to restore natural gas service to more than 1,100 customers impacted by its moratorium in response to the Williams NESE pipeline being rejected in May, those from Sane Energy Group held an event to tell people how to get off the grid by utilizing other renewable energy sources.

On Thursday, October 10, at Bungalow Bar, Sane Energy Project brought experts in renewable heating and cooling of homes and businesses to address a full house of Rockaway residents seeking information on gaining energy independence.

The evening began with introductions by Sane Energy Project followed by remarks from local elected officials, Senator Joseph P. Addabbo and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, as well as Brooklyn Assemblyman William Colton, who spoke in support of the ground-breaking Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act signed

into law by Governor Cuomo earlier this year.

Speakers included John Franceschina, Senior Manager of Lockheed Martin’s Energy Efficiency and Demand Response program for PSEG Long Island, who provided attendees with tips on reducing energy costs and improving efficiency and offered free energy audits upon request, as well as opportunities for rebates for used appliances and toward EnergyStar replacements, The second presentation was

By Sharon Feldman SERVES: 12 INGREDIENTS: 3 eggs 1/2 cup milk 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoon melted butter Nonstick cooking spray SAUCE: 2 pints blueberries 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 1/2 cup sugar 2 teaspoons cornstarch FILLING: 1 package farmer's cheese 1 1/2 cups 4% cottage cheese 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar 1 egg yolk 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour Zest of 1 lemon DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 300 de-

grees. To make blintzes: Puree ingredients (except cooking spray) in a blender until smooth. Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes.

Coat an 8-inch nonstick pan with cooking spray; place over medium heat. Pour in about 2 tablespoons batter; swirl pan so batter covers bottom.

Replace pan on burner and cook until batter is just set and underside is lightly browned. Transfer to a plate. Repeat with remaining batter, stacking blintzes as you go.

To make sauce: Combine ingredients in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Cook until berries release juices and sauce just boils, 3 to 4 minutes; set aside.

To make filling: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Mix ingredients in a medium bowl. Spoon 2 tablespoons filling on 1/4 of each blintz, leaving a 1/4-inch border along the edge. Fold in half, then in half again; transfer to baking sheet. Cover loosely with foil and bake until filling is set, 12 to 15 minutes.

Place 2 blintzes on each of 6 plates, and top with blueberry sauce before serving.

SHEA BREAKS GROUND 1961

Construction began October 1961 and Shea Stadium opened April 1964. There were 55k seats and it cost $28.5M to build.

Named after William Shea, a lawyer, brought back MLB to New York after the Dodgers and NY Giants left for California in 1957.

The NY Mets started in 1962. The first concert at Shea was the Beatles, on August 15, 1965. Rockaway residents will remember using an LIRR connection to the 7 train (platform on the left) to get to a game.

It sucks and I feel like everyone is always going out to dinner and drinks and going on vacations and I'm stuck.

I have no credit cards, my parents have freaked me out about going into debt. So I have no debt. I'm a Catholic school teacher, so my income feels small, but I love what I do. I definitely want more money, and I want to stop being jealous of my friends. I'm so curious about what you'll say. Thank you.

Dear Broke Betty, You, my dear, are so genius to ask me what to do. I love talking abundance, and I love talking cash and money!

I would place a good $20 bet that your friends have pretty big credit card debt. I challenge you to ask them (with grace) how they make their lives work. Don't feel shy.

Also it's ok to tell them you're curious because you've been secretly comparing yourself to them, and you don’t want to do that anymore. It's ok to be human!

Once you've taken care of the jealousy, by simply asking your friends how they do it, take a moment and take a breath. You have no debt.

Congratulations. I would also bet that even if you get a credit card now, you will be mega responsible with using it!

And because you are a teacher, there are several and actually many ways to make extra money to add to your

current income! Tutoring is one, a more fun opportunity would be doing birthday parties, babysitting or nannying for a short amount of time per week. All this extra money can be dedicated to having fun! Making fun a priority is quite enchanting.

Lastly, do your fun research! Look up vacations you would want to take, see what restaurants you would choose to go to, find what shows you would like to see.

Many people get stuck in complaining mode, and focusing on what doesn't feel good. Start focusing on what you want to do, instead of what you don't. It's a bad habit and you are in total control of what you think about it. The more aware you are of your thoughts, the more power you have.

The betrothed were celebrating one week before the grand ceremony with their wedding party and family, and it was a wonderful afternoon!

The next day, fresh off a Yankees win, and prior to a painful Yankees loss, the bride’s parents walked down Literary Walk in Central Park thinking to themselves how they got here. Literary Walk is lined with statues of the world’s great authors and also lined with majestic elm trees. The elm in America was ravished earlier last century by a beetle that ate right through them. Elms in mid-October are a beautiful tree. As we walked by them, we noticed that one great big elm had been chopped down completely. The Central Park Conservancy knows that to protect all the other elms, that any sign of disease must be treated aggressively, so they chop it down.

Late afternoon in mid-October is a wonderful time to wander through Central Park, especially as the great big trees breathe their last sighs of being green, and gently be-

gin the process of turning to red and gold, silently releasing their leaves to the ground.

The affect is stunning as the late afternoon air cools off the remaining sun as it sets. Midpark adjacent to the Sheep Meadow is a Le Pain Quotidien, where they now serve drinks. And it is a lovely place to sit and nosh on a salad and sip a glass of wine, watching the dogs play in the meadow beyond.

A walk along 72nd Street out of the park to Madison Avenue brings you to St. James' Church on the east side of Madison. As we walked by, we noticed that the doors were open and that candles were lit inside.

We peeked in, but not being Episcopalian, we entered gingerly. We were greeted at the door by a kindly-looking woman who welcomed us in.

We sat in the back and were amazed at the candle-lined aisle and the candle-lit alter in the darkened church.

The minister came out and welcomed everyone to the service as the piano played an Irish melody. The Reverend Brenda Husson, the first female Rector of St. James', spoke of the invitation by her church to all who were interested in a deeper relationship with God. We felt as we were meant to be there, drawn from the deep recesses of Central Park to the mystical candles of the century-old church, whose community was established in the early 1800s. If you are

From The QueensRail Coalition: It’s A Go

The Coalition for QueensRail is pleased that the long-awaited Rockaway Beach Branch (RBB) study has finally been released. While disappointed it was withheld from the public for over a year, we look forward to beginning to discuss the details of the plan, which had been on hold until now.

We were happy to see

that the MTA study considered connections from Howard Beach using both the LIRR and NYCT. It was not surprising that estimated daily ridership on the subway was more than four times that of the LIRR (47,000 vs 11,200). So, this is the connection we will continue to support.

Another thing we support is the study’s con-

clusion that park land can coexist with a rail line. We believe that this narrow, 3.5-mile ribbon of land can serve both the transportation and recreation needs of a borough that is home to 2.3 million people. From this point forward, we will refer to this dual-purpose goal as “QueensLink.”

Once built, QueensLink will be a tremendous public asset. It will dramatically reduce commute time for people living in a “transportation desert” by bringing lower income and working-class communities closer to education, employment, recreation and affordable housing.

Reactivating RBB as an extension of the subway opens-up new connections and new opportunities for thousands of New Yorkers currently faced with long, down-

town Manhattan-only commutes.

Southern Queens commuters face some of the longest commutes in the entire nation. For the sake of transit equity, we must try harder to find affordable solutions.

But there are other benefits than saving time and money. Forty-seven thousand daily subway riders mean that motorists will finally have a viable option to Woodhaven Blvd. and Van Wyck Expressway. Less congestion means safer roads, fewer pedestrian and bicyclist deaths and less pollution. NYC cannot combat climate change or reduce our dependence on cars without extending transit deeper into the outer boroughs.

QueensLink will also take pressure off other parts of the subway system. For instance, riders

traveling between south and central Queens will be able to avoid Manhattan entirely, thereby reducing subway crowding for Brooklyn and Manhattan straphangers.

The release of this study represents the first major step towards reconnecting south Queens with the rest of the borough and City. But QueensLink and other projects like it will never be realized without transparent transit agencies, vision from elected officials, and a willingness to consider much more efficient ways of building them.

We look forward to working with all stakeholders on all these details to ensure that QueenLink becomes a reality.

Travels with Bob and Sandy A LOOK INTO THE PAST OF QUEENS

It’s not often that a non-fiction book can evoke fond memories that become saddened by the ravages of time. Richard Panchyk’s book, “Abandoned Queens” does exactly that.

The book, only 95 pages and heavily laced with color photos, brought back memories to this writer of his time in the Rockaways and when he was stationed at the now abandoned military installation, Fort Tilden, at the eastern end of the peninsula.

Most of the wooden buildings that once populated Fort Tilden have since gone the way of dust and only a few of the solid brick buildings remain.

Some of the ancient wartime gun emplacements and ammunition bunkers remain along the shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean. One memory that immediately came to the fore when as a staff sergeant stationed there, the writer went looking for several soldiers who were supposed to be working on a project but had gone missing. They were found relaxing in a bunker and said: “Sarge, how the hell did you find us here?”

The writer smiled and responded: “I was a private here and hid in places you haven’t found yet.”

Active since WWI, the fort was to be a defense against enemy ships coming in over the Atlantic. No shots were ever fired in anger. In later years, a portion of the facility was fenced off and housed a missile battery that was guarded 24/7 by armed soldiers. Even those stationed at Fort Tilden with no reason to enter that section were never permitted near it.

The old chapel, the commandant’s house and several other brick buildings stand today.

Now part of a park, the base is used for recreational purposes and the occasional concert.

Also focusing on the Rockaways is a chapter called, “The Lost Neighborhood of Edgemere.” Through its history,

Edgemere was a cluster of small one-family homes and bungalows where everyone virtually knew every other resident.

Panchyk’s photos of the neighborhood present a sad view of streets leveled with no houses still standing and lots strewn with debris. If there’s a negative to the book, he expends too much space and color photos of construction debris and just plain garbage where homes once stood and children played in the streets.

Arverne, once the home of this writer, is given short shrift with pictures of abandonment, although the neighborhood is enjoying a renaissance with residential structures filling the vacant lots in what should be prime real estate.

North of the Rockaway peninsula, he zeroes in on what was once Flushing Airport. Although he makes mention of this, he fails to note that there was also, once upon a time, Rockaway Airport that was forced to close as encroaching development presented a hazard to aircraft landing and taking off.

There are some excellent photos of the Long Island Motor Parkway that now offers people looking for a ground level version of Manhattan’s High Line. Begun in 1908, the abandoned motorway reaching from Queens to Suffolk County in its heyday was the brainchild of William Vanderbilt Jr. and was originally called the “Vanderbilt Parkway.” It ran through Fresh Meadows, Queens Village, and Glen Oaks.

When the Grand Central Parkway/Northern State Parkway came into being, Vanderbilt’s dream became obsolete. Today it accommodates walkers, bicyclists and those looking for a bit of pristine and quiet comfort.

Long Island City is given some mention with its industrial buildings and remnants of rail lines and the heavy traffic congestion that populates that section today.

Other neighborhoods fea-

tured include the abandoned psychiatric facility that once housed literally thousands of patients at Creedmoor, Dagnon Terminal and another former major military facility at Fort Totten.

The book, published by Arcadia Publishing and The History Press, is not inexpensive (listing at $23.99) for a 96page publication but that is the normal case with any book replete with photos, especially color pictures. But for anyone who lives/lived in most book is a terrific trek through any section of Queens, the memory lane.

Life With Our “Artistic” Child

Self-Direction Services for Kids With Special Needs As parents of special-needs children, we can agree that affording therapies and recreational activities for our loved ones is a frustrating financial challenge. Plus what about those of you with older children, whom after graduating high school have less resources and services? Good news!

Through NYS Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), there is a program called Self-Direction Services (SDS) that offers parents funding for services of their own choosing. Fred Rodriguez, a local parent of nine-year-old Connor, who has Down Syndrome, has vast experience as a SDS Broker, and in the below Q&A, gives the ins and outs on why SDS is the way to go.

KLA: Why do you say SDS was one of the best things you did for Connor?

FR: The program was one of the best things we did for our son because it allowed us to afford activities for him that we couldn’t before. For example, swimming, horseback-riding, soccer and piano lessons and camp cost a lot of money. We knew that all of these activities would help toward his future and growth.

Before SDS, we couldn’t afford it, however with the program, now we can.

This assessment is also used to determine your maximum budget amount, also known as the Personal Resource Allocation (PRA). Through a series of questions, it deciphers your child’s budget annually. KLA: How does the reimbursement process work?

FR: You submit your receipts once a month. You have from the first to the tenth of the month to submit your receipts for the past month.

And then it takes from 30 to 45 days for them to reimburse you. The only issue we’ve had is that we haven’t been able to spend all of the annual budget. The residual money you don’t spend, you lose. So basically, it’s use it or lose it.

KLA: You mentioned that SDS could be especially useful for parents with older special-needs adults. Why? FR: If a parent wants their adult child to start learning how to live independently, SDS would pay for the child’s rent and a live-in caretaker. Stop & Shop Helps Launch Food Pantry for Local School In an effort to reduce hunger among students in the communities it serves, Stop & Shop has donated $10,000 to help launch an in-school food pantry at P.S./ M.S 105, The Bay School in Far Rockaway.

Almost 80% of the students who attend P.S./ M.S 105 are classified as living below the poverty level. School officials say about 70 families are new to the school and are either living with extended family, friends or in family shelters and need food and personal hygiene products.

“We have established a food pantry in the school building that will give families in need access to the assistance they require,” said Benham (Kevin) Nadjmabadi, the Student and Temporary Housing Coordinator at P.S./M.S. 105. “Through Stop & Shop’s generosi-

ty, we will be able to provide families in need with canned foods, dry goods, non-perishables and microwavable foods, since those living in family shelters do not have access to stoves. For families with refrigerators, we will be able to offer milk and eggs. We will also be able to provide them with soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, shampoo and sanitary items.”

Stop & Shop has provided the school with $10,000 worth of gift cards so they can shop for the specific products that families have identified they need most. Nadjmabadi and other school personnel will use the gift cards to purchase the products at area Stop & Shop stores to stock the school’s food pantry.

This has an effect on each and every student who cannot get enough nourishment to sustain their health, nutrition, and their ability to focus,” said Willie A. P.S./ M.S.105 marks the first Stop & Shop School Food Pantry in New York.

The company hopes to work with more schools in the future.
