Harbor Light Clears Major Hurdle HEERAN HOPES FOR HOLIDAY OPENING

The Harbor Light just passed a major hurdle and is on its way to seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. On October 11, the New York City Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA) finally granted a necessary variance for the rebuilt Harbor Light restaurant to open soon. The owners of the Harbor Light have been on an uphill battle to reopen ever since the beloved Belle Harbor res-

taurant burned down during Hurricane Sandy. Many would think that was the hardest part, but with nearly six years since the storm and the doors of the newly rebuilt restaurant still closed, its been clear that the battle to come back has been anything but easy. But on October 11, the Harbor Light got some good news to give the hope that the Light will shine again—and soon. The owners of the Harbor Light have spent three years

trying to clear the hurdle with the BSA alone, and last Thursday, they were finally granted the variance they needed. “It’s been a long road, no doubt,” owner Sean Heeran said. “It was a big thing for us to be able to get this, as it’s been going on for three years, just with the BSA. But at the end of the day, the BSA worked hard and wanted to help us. They didn’t make it easy, but they helped us get it done and it feels great because we wanted to build the place in a way that was necessary.” Heeran had a lot of support along the way from local elected officials and a community that so dearly wants their neighborhood restaurant back. “We had a lot of support from politicians like Councilman Eric Ulrich and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato,

plus friends that knew people. It was a group effort by a lot of people,” he said. Over the summer, the owners put out a request for neighbors to help plead their case with the BSA by writing letters of support and signing a petition, which Heeran also believes helped. “With our situation, there was not one person against it. While dealing with the BSA, I got to see a lot of other cases in this process and there was a ton of opposition from people not wanting certain projects in their neighborhood, but when they saw all those letters and the three-thousand plus signatures on the petition for us to re-open, they figured, ‘wow, these people really want this.’ It helped them realize that this is very important,” Heeran Continued on page 6

Rev Run Visits Local School to Rap About Why ‘Health is Wealth’ By Kami-Leigh Agard

Who’s running the mic across the country for diabetes awareness? It’s none other than pioneering new-school 80s era, rap virtuoso, now popular TV personality and Netflix series actor, Rev Run Simmons of rap group, Run-DMC fame, and his wife, Justine. And this past Friday, October 12, after Rev Run and his wife made their case for why kids need to make healthy lifestyle choices, he got stiff competition from the fourth- and fifth-grade students of PS 104Q The Bays Water School in Far Rockaway, who cleverly spat out lyrics at an epic “Health is Wealth” rap battle. One student had her lyrics bumping in the crowd with “When I say candy, you say, no!” Then the packed auditorium with students, teachers, school personnel, and Rev Run and Justine responded, “No!” Then she continued, “When I say, fruit, you say, yes!” The crowded gleefully chanted, “Yes!” Numerous classes came to the stage to perform, and though Ms. Connick’s class won, earning a gilded microphone trophy, presented by Rev Run and Justine; Principal Katie Grady emphasized that everyone who performed were winners. “We are so grateful for Rev Run, Justine, the folks at Novo Nordisk, who came here to share a positive message and support our students in their journey for healthy living. Last year, we also received a $10K grant from Novo Nordisk to build an outdoor classroom, where our students can continue learning about healthy living. Nordisk really believes in a healthy tomorrow for children today,” Grady said. And as an added treat, together with Nordisk, Rev Run and Justine treated the entire school to a pizza party. Rev Run and Justine partnered up with the Novo Nordisk’s AskScreenKnow.com campaign, and have been touring the coun-

try since 2014, raising awareness about the risk factors of type 2 diabetes and the need for early screening; why the African American community needs to take special attention as they are twice as likely to develop diabetes; speaking out on why adults and children alike need to make healthy choices; and how together as a family they made some serious renovations on their food choices and physical activity. “As kids growing up on the streets of Hollis, Queens, we spent a lot of time moving. We played on the streets. Movement was our everything. We played outside after school, until our parents called us in for dinner. We weren’t told to go outside and play because it’s the healthy thing to do, we wanted to play. For today’s youth, it’s different. They’d rather be indoors playing video games or on their smartphones. Plus, I guess because of fear of what’s happening in the streets, parents feel more secure knowing their children are inside,” Rev Run said. For Justine, who grew up in Hempstead, Long Island, it was

wake-up call started once they saw how diabetes was running rampant in their immediate family. Both Rev Run and Justine have a paternal history of type 2 diabetes. Rev Run said, “My father, who passed away, was diabetic. Justine’s father is also diabetic, as are many other members of her immediate family. African-Americans have a much higher risk of developing the disease. My manager’s dad also had diabetes. He told me about Novo Nordisk's campaign, Ask. Screen. Know, and it clicked. I love my family, and wanted right away to start on a new journey of healthy living.” Novo Nordisk is a global health care company with decades of innovation and leadership in diabetes care. and are constantly watching us, especially our son, Dickey. “He monitors what we are eating. I call him the ‘food police.’ Sometimes he could be a bit much, but I know he has good intentions and wants us here living healthy and happy as a family,” Rev Run said. Justine laughingly added, “Dickey is something else. I could literally have a french fry in my mouth, and he’ll try to take it out.” Justine also spoke about how she’s seeing a changing tide of food options even with the fast food industry. “McDonald’s is now including yogurt and apple slices with their Happy Meal for kids. I even noticed the portions are getting smaller. I don’t believe in denying myself or my children a french fry. I’m a firm believer that everything in moderation is good. As long as you also make sure to get a good daily fill of vegetables and fruit,” she said. The Simmons’ also emphasized what you’re around is what you’re likely to copy and do. “For us, eating healthy and exercising has become a family affair. We all help each other to stick to our goals,” Justine said. At the event, the school children designed “Health & Wealth” posters, which were awarded with prizes. Next up was the rap battle, which even had Rev Run and Bays Water School Principal Katie Grady bumping their heads to the beat, which some students improvised with beat boxing (a form of vocal percussion primarily involving the art of mimicking drum machines, using one's mouth, lips, tongue, and voice). At the closing of the event, Principal Grady said, “This month is about respect. Every time you make a healthy choice. You are stating, ‘I matter. I respect myself and I love myself.’”

MAYOR’S EAST END TOWN HALL SET FOR OCTOBER 24

In December of last year, Mayor Bill de Blasio visited the west end of the peninsula for a public town hall for the first time. At the town hall organized by Councilman Eric Ulrich, the public was able to engage in an organized, open discussion with the mayor, with everyone bringing up issues that affect the peninsula most from beach protection to transportation and more. Many called the meeting a success. Now he’s coming back again for a town hall near the east end of the peninsula.

Councilman Donovan Richards has invited the mayor for a public town hall on Wednesday, October 24 at P.S./M.S. 42- Robert Vernam School (488 Beach 66th Street). Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and close at 7 p.m., but the town hall officially starts at 6:30 p.m. As space is limited, those interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP by 5 p.m. on October 23. PS 256Q To Get a New Building

PS 256Q in Belle Harbor is officially getting a new building. On Friday, October 12, local elected officials joined with the New York City School Construction Authority for the official groundbreaking ceremony. PS 256Q at Temple Beth-El, a school for children with special needs, is getting a much-needed upgrade, with a brand new facility. The school’s current building was damaged by Hurricane Sandy and was due for vast renovations, which would have cost more than starting from scratch.

On Friday, Councilman Eric Ulrich, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, Senator Joe Addabbo, Principal Robert Lopez, SCA President Lorraine Grillo, project managers and others gathered at the site at 445 Beach 135th Street for the official groundbreaking of the new state-of-the-art, three-story facility, made possible by a $31 million investment. said. Proving just how important it was for the Harbor Light to reopen was the biggest hurdle with the BSA, according to Heeran. “They wanted us to explain what was so unique about our property. We thought what happened to us was enough but they said that burning down and wanting to rebuild wasn’t a unique situation. So we had to explain how the soil in Rockaway is different from other places and how we had to put 60 pilings in just to hold the weight of the building, which was a strenuous financial situation. To get back what we had before, spacewise, it was very expensive and we had to take an unbelievable risk to build what we needed in order to operate properly. We had to deal with four different building codes over the time of building, and we had to make hallways bigger and staircases wider and my lawyers had to explain why that stuff needed

to be done,” he said. At the end of the day, the owners proved that their situation truly was unique and the BSA finally granted the variance that was needed. While clearing the hurdle with the BSA was a major win, the battle isn’t quite over yet. “Now basically all the paperwork has to be transferred to the Department of Buildings and they have to go through everything. It’s a process to get a Certificate of Occupancy and it’s not easy. Everything on the plan has to match what’s built and they can run into problems. We’re looking to have this done ASAP but ASAP could be four to six weeks. In the meantime, we have to tighten up the building and move the equipment in and get our utilities turned on, so we’re doing out part to get the building completely ready while the DOB does their part with the paperwork,” Heeran said, adding that he doesn’t expect there to be any problems. quite done with the BS. Another issue that the owners have to address is replacing the sidewalk in front of the building, plus adding five to seven trees. “Each tree costs $1,500 bucks. It’s crazy, but at this point, I’m so immune to all the BS. We just do what we have to do,” Heeran said. Despite the smaller hurdles ahead, Heeran believes that there is an end in sight. Heeran says they’re doing what they

can to expedite the process to open, whether than means obtaining a temporary C of O or just opening the bar portion of the restaurant initially. While the restaurant won’t be open by the sixth anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, Heeran is hopeful that Rockaway will have a nice gift for the holidays. “We’re really shooting for Christmas time right now,” he said. And yes, chicken in a basket will be on the menu.

Broadway And Hollywood Come To Rockaway: THE JEWISH CONNECTION Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, Richard Rodgers, and Ira Gershwin, are just a few Jewish names that became synonymous with Broadway and Hollywood during the last century. A twopart program on the Jewish connection to American theatre and films will take place at Temple Beth-El and Congregation Ohab Zedek on the last two Tuesday nights in October. The entire Rockaway peninsula and the Five Towns are invited to hear about these special people who created our most unforgettable music over the last one hundred years. There is no charge and the public is welcome. You might say it started with a young boy, Israel Balin, who came to this country with his parents from Europe, and became the toast of the country as Irving Berlin. This patriotic immigrant gave us, among many others, the beautiful song, "God Bless America."

Ever wonder about the music and lyrics that Dorothy sang in "The Wizard of Oz?" Just look up the names of Harold Arlen for the music and Yip Harburg for the lyrics and you will have your answer. Rockaway Film Fest Debuts This Weekend By Katie McFadden

Rockaway doesn’t have a movie theater anymore, but that doesn’t mean one can’t come here. This weekend, Rockaway will get to experience what having a movie theater in town could be like once again. The first-ever Rockaway Film Festival is October 18 through October 21. This weekend, instead of heading off the peninsula to check out the latest blockbuster on the big screen, stick around town and check out the big screen in your own backyard. However these aren’t your regular films that you can see in theaters or on your TV in a few months. Many of these films are ones that are well-deserving of a mass audience, but are only released in limited venues, such as other film festivals, or have never been seen by a wide audience before. Lucky for Rockaway, a variety of these films, from full-length movies to shorts,

Sam Fleischner, a filmmaker who lives part time in Rockaway Beach, has long had the idea of bringing a film festival to this movie desert. “I’ve wanted to have a movie theater in the Rockaways for a long time. There are micro cinemas in different parts of the world that are nice models of what a cinema space can evolve into. A place for people that really love movies and enjoy having

a place to get together and have snacks and discuss movies, and not just see the new blockbuster, but old films, cult classics and rare films. That’s the kind of stuff I get really excited about,â€? Fleischner said. “I’ve imagined how something like that can work in Rockaway and figured a place that can serve as a little movie theater, but also a multipurpose space for things besides showing films, would work. I was looking at spaces like this a few years ago, but didn’t pursue it.â€? However, over the summer, a perfect opportunity arose when David Selig, who has made a splash in Rockaway over the past few years with projects like starting Rockaway Taco, to now owning The Castle on Beach 117th Street, made a proposal that Fleischner couldn’t refuse. “This summer, David reached out to me and said ‌’there should be a Rockaway Film Festival,’â€? Fleischner said.

Selig insists Fleischner originally had the idea to bring a film festival to Rockaway many years ago, but now the timing felt right. It also helped that Selig has a great space for such an event. Over the past few months, Selig, Fleischner and a hardworking crew have transformed a warehouse space in Arverne into a cultural hub that could be utilized for various purposes, including a movie theater. “Sam suggested doing a film festival at the handball courts almost a decade ago. It never happened, but since that time, I’ve been realizing every year, how Rockaway has developed into a place that would be welcoming to something like that. The timing made it happen this year with this space being here and ready to be used,� Selig said. There are so many incredible movies that no one has ever seen before,� Fleischner said. As a special addition, many of the film’s directors, producers and even actors will be on hand to introduce or discuss the films, so the audience will have an interactive experience. For instance, the ticket for Friday night’s feature, Diamantino, a Cannes award-winning film that just screened at the New York

Film Festival, will also include a dinner by Sarah Owens and drinks at The Castle after the film. The ticket for Saturday night’s feature, Medium Cool, a film that questions the role and responsibilities of television and its newscasts through a news reporter who finds himself becoming personally involved in the violence that erupts around the 1968 Democratic National Convention, includes admission to a special after-party at Rockaway Brewing Company, just two blocks away. Tickets include two Tacobay tacos and two beers at the brewery and admission to the dance party that will feature DJ’s Andrew Vanwyngarden, who some may know from MGMT, and Taka. Ticket prices for each film experience vary, with some being free like Saturday morning’s feature, The Little Fugitive, and the Saturday afternoon feature, Motherland. Other programs cost about $10, while the screen-

Page 13 ing of Diamantino and the after-party costs $25, and the screening of Medium Cool plus the Sarah Owens dinner costs $60. There are also day passes available and a fourday shell pass for $150 that includes the party, the dinner, plus admission to all of the film programs throughout the weekend. Fleischner hopes that the inaugural Rockaway Film Festival is a success so that there can be more film programming in the future. “My dream is to turn this into a regularly programmed cinema and this will really get the ball rolling. If people want to have a cinema in Rockaway, it’s important to show up this weekend because this is how we’re going to gauge what interest there is from the community and whether or not something like this is viable here,� he said.

Bill Directing Army Corps to Hurry Up Passes An important bill that includes a provision for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to quickly complete the Rockaway Reformulation Project recently passed the House and Senate. On Tuesday, October 16, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced that the America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2018 passed both the Senate and the House of Representatives and will soon head to the president’s desk for signature. The act contains many provisions, but one is of particular interest to Rockaway as it includes a provision to direct USACE to quickly complete its coastal protection project for Rockaway. The bill authorizes the Army Corps to proceed directly to preconstruction planning, engineering and design if the Secretary of the Army determines if the project is justified when the re-

port is complete. “The residents of the Rockaways and Jamaica Bay have waited far too long for the completion of this project. This provision will build on the agreement I struck with Army Corps Colonel Asbery to speed up the Rockaway Reformulation Project so this community can finally benefit from the hundreds of millions of dollars that I worked hard to secure through the Sandy Relief bill. Now, it’s time for the Army Corps to listen carefully to feedback from local residents as they work to build a truly resilient future for Rockaway and Jamaica Bay,” Senator Schumer said, according to a press release. “We are seeing stronger storms hitting our coastlines, and we need to make sure that New York communities have the infrastructure and necessary plans in place to protect their homes and businesses,” said Senator Gil-

librand, member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. “With this provision, the Rockaway peninsula will be one step closer to having a comprehensive, coordinated plan to manage future storm damage. The devastation caused by Superstorm Sandy was a wakeup call for the urgent need to protect our shorelines. I was proud to include the provision to expedite the Rockaway Reformulation Project in America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2018 and I am pleased that this legislation will soon be signed into law. I will always work with my colleagues in the Senate to make sure New York has the resources necessary to protect our local waterways and coastal areas.” The Rockaway Beach shoreline has experienced numerous severe hurricanes and northeasters over the last forty years, causing substantial damage to commercial

and residential properties on the Rockaway peninsula. Once complete, the Rockaway Reformulation feasibility study would help create a much-needed comprehensive plan to manage potential future storm damage and prevent loss of life in the region when the next major storm comes. The bipartisan America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2018 authorizes studies and projects carried out by the USACE for the primary purposes of navigation, flood protection, and aquatic ecosystem restoration. USACE has been repeatedly told about the urgency to complete the study, which it is well on its way to doing. Public comments are currently being accepted for the study through October 22. USACE hopes to move the study up to headquarters for approval by the end of the year, with the hope that construction can begin in 2019.

Army Corps Comments Dear Editor: (In response to the 10/10 Army Corps Meeting) Ms. Mazey, Thank you for your presentation this evening at the Cedarhurst Village Hall. Two observations before my comments. It would have been helpful if the paper with

Also, in view of the length of the website address, it would be helpful for those of us who are rotten typists, if the project used a web address shortener such as goo.gl or TinyURL or Bitly. Flooding issues. Brookville Boulevard regularly floods between Rockaway Boulevard / NY 878 and 147 Avenue, particularly at Lat. 40.643868, Long. -73.744375. The problem could be alleviated by placing one to two feet of crushed rock over the existing roadway and repaving it at the low spot – a distance of perhaps one hundred feet. This would be an important convenience for motorists when the road is flooded, as well as an important life safety feature since southbound traffic is faced with a relatively sharp left turn at the flood location. The NYC DOT has had plans to rebuild the roadway for many years, but nothing

Residents of the Bayswater section of Far Rockaway would have significant benefits from raising Norton Drive between Coldspring Road and Westbourne Avenue, and Westbourne Avenue between Norton Drive and Dunbar Street. This would prevent high tides and storm surges from infiltrating the low-lying areas of Bayswater. Finally, all Rockaway residents would benefit from raising Beach Channel Drive from where it drops after the Horton Avenue / Hassock Street intersection to just past the Nassau County line. This is a short distance (50 feet), but the street often becomes impassible if there is a drizzle during high tide. This can be a critical safety matter because Beach Channel Drive is the primary through street in the Rockaways. It is the only street that runs from Nassau County to past the Marine Parkway Bridge. Pols Put Pressure on Alma Realty to Get Work Done By Kami-Leigh Agard

Last Saturday, October 13, grey skies and chilly temperatures did not deter scores of residents living in Surfside buildings, 107-10, 106-20 Shore Front Parkway and One Beach 105 Street, from coming out in earnest to hear what their elected officials plan to do to push Alma Realty into finally correcting chronic health, safety and security issues in the buildings. Queens League for United Tenants representatives, Florence Fisher and Penny LaForest, set the tone for the meeting when they bluntly stated, “These are living conditions that you’ve been residing in, and have still been paying your rent. Rent is more than heat and hot water, and if the rent is only giving you heat and hot water, let’s prorate it, and we’ll do our own repairs. “Your tenant association has done everything in the world they could possibly do by law and nothing has gone forward.

We need a schedule from the landlord indicating when these repairs will be done, and make sure they stick to that schedule. You’re paying rent. It’s money you’re paying for services and accommodations you’re entitled to. We’re getting little trinkets of fixings to look like they’re doing the right thing, but that’s just to keep us quiet.” S.H.A.F.T. (Surfside Housing for Tenants) sent elected officials and housing advocates a list consisting of 13 points highlighting health and safety issues in the building, and implored them to write Alma Realty, indicating that they will be putting pressure on the management company to address residents’ concerns. The 13 points highlighted include: chronic malfunction of elevators; poor laundry room facilities; malfunctioning fire doors; poor building ventilation system; longstanding water pipe issues; filthy building exits; loose scaffolding outside the buildings; unsafe playground area with broken tables

and benches; insufficient signage and lack of speed control in parking lots; poor building security; insufficient lighting; poor recycling; building intercom malfunctions and unsecure doors and gates leading into the buildings; and more. The consensus at the meeting was that if residents want change, pressure must be placed on city and state housing and building agencies; and also Alma must be given a deadline as to when all the improvements must be made. Senator Joseph Addabbo said, “If we do nothing, nothing happens. The fact that you are here shows that you want to effectuate some change. Of the 13 points S.H.A.F.T. says need to be addressed, six of them are serious safety issues. However, things do happen when you put pressure on city agencies like NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and the Department of Buildings (DOB). “With these Surfside build-

ings, I’ll certainly put pressure on HPD and see if we can also get the state to get involved. If we give Alma a timeframe of about 30 days, and if by that time, certain items on the list are not done, then we should have a strategic meeting to determine a game plan with the city agencies, the mayor, the governor, anybody we could put under this tent to move your demands forward, whether it’s through legal action, or even QCC’s recommendation of not paying the rent,” Addabbo said. Representatives from the NYC Public Advocate Office were on board with Addabbo’s recommendation to give Alma a deadline. Outreach Coordinator Stacey Eliuk said, “A timeline must be given to Alma to make sure all the repairs are happening in a timely basis. Little bits trickling done, here and there, does not equate to a safe living environment. So we’ll be looking closely with all the local elected officials and S.H.A.F.T. to make Continued on page 17

sure these repairs are done by the deadline, and if not, we’re here the next day.” Constituent Services Associate Christopher Donald added, “We are working with S.H.A.F.T. leader, Karen Nevirs, on the 13 points that were sent to us, and have done a walkthrough in the buildings and saw firsthand how troubling residents’ issues are. We wrote a letter to Alma, and Alma in turn responded with a letter just yesterday, claiming to have dealt or are dealing with the issues. We do have to hold them accountable for what they are expected to do. We also have to hold HPD and DOB accountable to make sure they do the inspections, issue penalties for any violations and even possibly take the landlord to court.” Queens Borough President’s Office Rockaway Liaison Dan Brown said that after their office took S.H.A.F.T.’s list of concerns to HPD and DOB, building inspections were done and violations were immediately issued. “Upon receiving S.H.A.F.T.’s

packet listing all of residents’ concerns, the borough president went directly to the city agencies, and asked them what are they going to do about it. Within days, DOB issued an elevator violation and later HPD came down, inspected and issued 14 other violations. Alma is a private landlord, but you can hold the city agencies accountable for what’s going on in these buildings, and the borough president is happy to have a meeting with S.H.A.F.T, residents and Alma to move forward and make change happen,” Brown said. A term covering everything from owls to eagles, it is helpful to know a few key features of this type of bird. First and foremost, the name “raptor” comes from a Latin term meaning “to seize or grasp,” referencing how these birds swoop down on live prey to feed themselves. All raptors will have a hooked beak and sharp talons; both useful in capturing, carrying and tearing apart their catch. If you have ever heard the term, “Eagle eyes,” it should come as no surprise that all raptors possess amazing eyesight, in fact, some species can spot their next meal as far as a mile away! As the peninsula adjusts to the autumnal chill, Jamaica Bay becomes a hotspot to see all varieties of these fascinating creatures. In the past week alone, we have had reports of Merlin, Cooper's Hawks, Peregrine Falcons, Northern Harriers, Osprey and Sharp-shinned hawks all seen in the local area! You don’t have to go far to find a great spot to do a little hawk-watching yourself. Both the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and Fort Tilden provide great places for fresh air and nature explorations. Gratitude and Joy The following was taken from Yoga Journal and truly resonated with me. Hope it helps you to find joy and ease in your life. A practice for welcoming joy is to spend time experiencing gratitude moments—welcoming feelings of gratitude and joy into body and mind. You do this by taking time to recall that which you’re thankful for. Research shows that people who regularly practice gratitude moments are more joyful and experience less depression than those who don’t. The following meditation

Illicit drug use is among the top 10 preventable risk factors for years of healthy life lost in developed countries. In the U.S., approximately 10 percent of the population 12 years of age and older reported the use of illicit substances in 2015. One third of teenagers younger than 14 who initiate substance use will go on to develop substance use disorder in their lifetimes. Despite the fact that use of these illegal substances will lead to sickness and early death, research has found that primary care physicians fail to diagnose substance abuse disorder in up to 43 percent of their patients. Although many professional societies recommend screening adolescents, adults, and pregnant women for illicit drug use, such screening is not often done. Parents and relatives need to be aware of their children’s use of these

substances and need to advise their physician about their suspicions. Many young people are simply unaware of how harmful these drugs can be. Let’s look at some of these drugs and their dangers: Cocaine – comes in two forms, namely base and salt. Base is processed to make rock crystal, aka crack cocaine. Cocaine salt is a fine white powder that vaporizes when heated. It may be snorted, injected, or smoked. It acts on neurotransmitters in the brain. Its immediate effects are increased energy and alertness, euphoria, appetite suppression, and decreased need for sleep. About 80 percent of those with cocaine use disorder have psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and paranoia. Cocaine use accounts for about 25 percent of heart attacks in those under 45. Long-term use can cause heart failure, memory loss, movement disorders, and perforated nasal septums. Methamphetamine – legally prescribed for ADHD, it is

made in much higher dosages by illegal labs. Also known as crystal meth, it can be taken orally, smoked, injected, or snorted. Like cocaine, it works on chemicals in the brain. Also, like cocaine, it causes a euphoric feeling. Long-term use can cause structural changes in the part of the brain responsible for emotions and memory. These changes can be detected on brain scans. Long-term use can also cause serious tooth decay, known as “meth mouth.” MDMA – chemically 3,4-meth ylenedioxymethamphetamine, known on the street as ecstasy, it works on the same brain chemicals as the other drugs above. Usually taken in pill form, but it can be snorted or swallowed as a liquid. It acts as a stimulant and psychedelic. It has been associated with cardiac arrest and death. Its other side effects have not yet been well studied. Synthetic cannabinoids – i.e. K2 and Spice. Because they contain much higher levels of THC, the active ingredient in

marijuana, their use is associated with acute intoxication and can cause severe cardiac, respiratory, and seizure complications. An outbreak of the use of these substances in Mississippi in 2015 caused more than two dozen deaths. They are highly addictive, and withdrawal can cause headaches, anxiety, depression, and irritability. Bath salts – chemically synthetic cathinones, they are related to the khat plant of Eastern Africa and South Asia. A white or brown crystal-like powder, it may be smoked, snorted, swallowed, or injected. Causes increased sociability and libido and its effects on the brain are 10 times more powerful than cocaine. They are addictive, and intoxication often results in death. It is unclear as to whether Aurelius was writing for posterity or to clear his own thinking, but his tome is the Mother of All Self-Help Books. EW Howell Construction Group, said in a release, that the New York City Department of Design and Construction has awarded the firm the general contract to build the new Far Rockaway Branch of the Queens Public Library. The two-story, 17,500-square-foot project will replace the existing 8,000-squarefoot building at 1637 Central Avenue in Far Rockaway, NY and double the area of library space offered to patrons. Completion is expected in Fall 2020. Designed by Snøhetta, the international architecture and design firm based in Olso, Norway and New York City, the new Far Rockaway Branch Library will be clad in fritted glass, colored in a light shade that will offer calm contrast to the hustle and bustle of the surrounding retail and pedestrian areas. The fritting will provide a combination of transparency and translucency that will give passersby a sense of the activity within the library, while giving a degree of privacy for library occupants. The library’s entryway features a tall transparent glass pyramidal opening at the corner of Mott and Central avenues.

Catch a Cure 2018 By Jean Condon

On the morning of Sunday, September 30, the weather was beautiful on the boardwalk at Beach 102nd Street with almost 300 runners, walkers, scooters, and baby stroller pushers assembled for the start of the Second Annual “Catch a Cure” 5K Family Walk/Run fundraiser for Cancer Awareness. This event raises money to help benefit families in our community touched by cancer. All the money raised was donated to Rockaway WISH, a local non-profit organization that recognizes the needs of the community, and volunteers their time and talents to assist our neighbors during difficult times. The day was about our local communities being UNITED as ONE! We were not individually Breezy Point, Rockaway Beach or Broad Channel. On this day we were FAMILY. Father Jim Cunningham of St. Francis de Sales spoke a few words and offered a prayer before the race.

The race was a tremendous success with participants and spectators having a truly fantastic morning on the boardwalk. Following the race, everyone gathered at the Community House for the results, awards, drinks, food, and to enjoy great company and offer special recognition of certain people. Catch a Cure will always honor and remember a person from each of our local communities. Special thanks to the families who allowed us to be their extended family. We remembered Kevin Gill of Broad Channel, Tom Maher of Rockaway Beach, and Tim and Claudia Leary of Breezy Point. The honorees of this day were Donna Reardon of Broad Channel, Kelly Kelley of Rockaway Beach and Joan Crowley of Breezy Point. They all had a special place in everyone’s heart that day. The Catch a Cure event could not have been such a tremendous success without the hard work of the Core 4: Robin Hoffman, Linda Humphrey, Jean

Condon, and Megan Rochelle. BC Shamrock Midgets Score The Play of The Week By Kami-Leigh Agard

Don’t let their name fool you. Judging from the amazing win the Broad Channel Shamrock Midgets scooped up last Sunday, October 14 against the Glen Cove Cardinals, these nine- and 10-year-old boys aren’t just giants, they’re football titans living up to the Broad Channel Athletic Club’s (BCAC) rich football legacy. In the fourth quarter, the Cardinals were ahead 25-19, but then with just three minutes left to the game, Shamrock Captain Petey Franchock upset the Cardinals’ advance by shrewdly dropping back to pass, avoided the rush, scrambled to his right, then to his left, and scored a touchdown that won the game with a nail-biting 26-25. It was an artful dance that had the Cardinals running, but not fast enough. Plus with TD Thomas Dreizen coming into the picture at the 16-second mark, he totally spooked the #13 Cardinal runner. Classic! Head coach Brad Palisi was beyond stoked, he was stunned. “Every time I play back the video from those last three minutes of the game, I’m beyond impressed. These boys really executed an offensive run that is so advanced for their age. This is a smart group of boys, who really think on their feet. We had a rough start to the season, but our boys did not let that damper their spirits nor determination. Plus our four captains, Petey, Craig Palisi, Jack Leary and Christian Borhi, consistently worked hard to pull the team together,” Palisi. Assistant Coach Alex Lubianka agreed. “These kids really worked. This is one of the best

football games I’ve ever seen them play. Lubianka, at just age 16, coaches the team even though he recently had to put his own high school football ambitions with St. Francis Prep on hold because he hurt his back. He said his love for the sport and the Shamrocks keeps him motivated. “I played with the Shamrocks in various divisions for a couple of years. This is one of the greatest youth football teams in the city that really teaches you not just the fundamentals of football, but the value of teamwork and discipline; and this season’s Midget team really reflects the Shamrock spirit.” The BCAC, founded in 1961, has engaged youth in Broad Channel, the peninsula and beyond in a variety of sports, including football. According to their mission statement, “The BCAC promotes sportsmanship, self-esteem and the development of life skills through engaging our youth in sports while providing a safe, healthy and positive environment. The skills are developed through the fundamentals of athletics.” And Coach Palisi, who has coached Shamrock football for six years, is a firm believer that the BCAC does that and more

for sports-driven youth. “The BCAC is privately-owned and funded through donations and fundraising. While Rockaway is known for basketball, Broad Channel has always been big for football. Local Jack Conneely is one of the first Shamrock players to be inducted into the BCAC Football Hall of Fame. The Shamrocks wouldn’t still be here, if it wasn’t for guys like him, and Jack still continuously comes to the field to support these boys. “These kids grow together from the Peanuts to the Pee

Wees, the Midgets and the Ponies. You see them grow not just in age and size, but with the discipline, professionalism and team spirit they bring to the field. The Midgets have three head coaches, Tim Leary, Darren Franchock and myself. We’ve volunteered for years coaching these kids, and we love it. It’s not just about winning games, but seeing how these kids mature into fine team players and human beings,” Palisi said. Franchock said he’s really pleased with the team. “We lost the first four games, but this last game’s victory shows how strong and determined our Midgets are. We only have a rotation of 14 players, much less than the other teams in the Nassau Suffolk Football League. Our players continually work hard,” he said. Shamrock Midget Captain Craig Palisi summed it up succinctly with this: “We played good. We played hard, and as a team, we didn’t give up.”
