PLEASE CALL TO SCHEDULE YOUR APPOINTMENT Most people don’t realize it but raptors (birds of prey) migrate in good numbers along the Rockaway peninsula this time of year. On Sunday, October 17, more than 120 people attended the popular annual Raptorama Festival at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Bobby Horvath, a fireman who rescues and rehabilitates
raptors and other wildlife, brought 20 disabled raptors to show them ‘up close and personal’ to the delight of children (of all ages) in the crowd. Attending birds included a Bald Eagle, Golden Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Barn Owl, Kestrel, and Augie, the very tame and beautiful Eurasian Eagle Owl. Continued on page 4

cently, so many people have said if there’s anything they can do, I should just let them know. I’ve spent almost two weeks thinking about what can be done for me. Without going into the gory details, an accident sidelined a family member and as word got out, numerous friends and good acquaintances reached out by phone, email and text, and I think everyone signed off by saying if there’s anything you
need, if there’s anything they can do, I shouldn’t hesitate. Someone left a message like that even though they live in South Carolina. Which then makes my life harder because now I’m thinking what can they do from there? They can’t send over a casserole. My laundry was piling up, what was I gonna do? Ask them to throw a load on? Yes, it’s occurred to you by now that the accident and injuries are all about me. I’ve hijacked the event. Healing and recovery are going well but I’m stuck on all those offers of help. Do all these kind people really want to do something? Am I being rude, am I leaving them hanging? Let me know if there’s anything I can do. Well, I'm out of milk. You using that time share in Cabo? It’s like Christmas. All these people asking what I want but I don’t want or need anything. Or I’ll think of something, but it’ll be too late. You can’t ask for a Christmas present at the end of Janu-

ary. Anyway, as I said, the patient is doing great (thanks for asking and nope, I don’t need anything, it hurts me to say). I’m not sure if this will make you pause next time you want to say, if you need anything just let me know. But I avoid a certain line of inquiry thanks to a friend who registers expressions and words as I do. Years ago, I was at a wake for this friend’s mother. Realizing that individuals in such moments can carry a burden not fully appreciated by all, I asked my buddy, so how are YOU doing? A big emphasis on the YOU so I’d be clear that I was trying to reach him through the fog of general sadness. He replied, you know how many people have asked me that question? With a slight mimic, he said, how are YOU feeling. I was devastated (because it’s all about me) and I remain haunted. I wish I’d said, if there’s anything I can do…

Local Swimmer Tess Howley Brings Home the Gold By Katie McFadden
Rockaway’s swim star Tess Howley continues to impress. The 16-year-old Neponsit resident recently returned from Europe where she participated as part of Team USA in the FINA Swimming World Cup. Howley came home with some new accolades to her name including a few broken records, a couple medals, including gold, and a new title as the fastest teenager in the world this year in the 200m butterfly.

Howley made waves this summer when she returned home to a big Rockaway-style welcome parade in June after competing in the 2020 Summer Olympic trials. While the 16-year-old Sacred Heart Academy student and Long Island Athletic Club (LIAC) swimmer didn’t make it to the Olympics this year, she made her hometown proud. And she hasn’t stopped. Howley and LIAC teammate Cavan Gormsen were recent-
Howley swam a 2:06.09 200m butterfly. The win earned her a gold medal at the FINA World Cup. She also beat her own preliminary swim time of 2:08.02 and set a Short Course Meter (SCM) 18 & under USA National Record, beating out Mary Mohler’s 2002 record time of 2:06.17. With such a record under her belt, Howley joins the likes of fellow SCM American junior record holders, Michael Phelps and Missy Franklin. In another impressive event, Howley participated in the mixed 4x50 medley relay on Sunday, October 3 in Berlin with a co-ed team of Quintin McCarty, Zhier Fan and Kristina Paegle. McCarty led off in 24.81, Fan went 26.79, Howley was 26.26 and Paegle closed in 23.69, for an overall time of 1:41.55. That put them second place behind Germany’s 1:39.17, earning them a silver medal. However, their time took down the previous world junior record set by Team USA

LOCAL SWIMMER TESS HOWLEY Continued from Page 6 with a 1:41.91 at the 2017 Singapore World Cup, making Howley and her team the new world junior record holders for the mixed 4×50 medley relay. As the competition continued on to Budapest, Howley continued to shine. Participating yet again in the 200m butterfly, Howley came in third place with a time of 2:06.67. However, at 16, Howley was the youngest in the competition. The first and second place winners, from Sweden and Hungary, were both 32 years old. As a junior, with her time in this race and her time for the 200m in Berlin, Howley has posted the two fastest 200m butterfly swims in the world this year by a teenager. When Howley came home on October 10, she brought home gold, silver and bronze medals, a new world record, a new national record and a title as the fastest teenage 200m butterfly swimmer in the world. How-
ley’s LIAC teammate, Gormsen also had great success, bringing home two golds and two silvers, making that seven combined medals for LIAC’s swimmers at this year’s FINA World Cup. Howley’s parents couldn’t join their daughter at this competition, as it is designed to give the swimmers a sense of independence, and they would have had to stay in separate hotels. However, they eagerly watched at home on Eurovision. “I had to give it up to God this time. I was just praying she would be safe, and the team would be safe. It was hard, but they did so good,” Howley’s
mother, Mary McDermott said. “I’m very proud of her. I’m proud of her every day. She’s living her dream and we’re supporting her, doing whatever we can for her. That’s what parents do.” When Howley came home on October 10, there was no firetruck-led parade this time, but rather a more subdued welcome. She did come home to her house being covered in red, white and blue Team USA balloons and a small get together with her family. However, by Monday, October 11, a day where most school kids have off, it was back to work for Howley as the junior had
to catch up on schoolwork she missed. And back to the pool the next day. “She won’t take a day off,” McDermott said. Howley’s impressive talents in swimming comes at the cost of hard work and dedication. “She practices six days a week, eight times with five night practices and three mornings,” McDermott said. McDermott says Howley is now looking forward. On Monday, October 18, it was announced that Howley is officially one of the 79 swimmers named to the 2021-22 U.S. National Junior Team. On Wednesday, October 13 at around 6:35 p.m., a woman was struck by a vehicle in a hit and run near Duane Reade. Police responded to a 911 call around Beach 116th Street and Beach Channel Drive last Wednesday. According to an NYPD spokesperson, a Nissan Maxima was traveling westbound on Beach Channel Drive at Beach 116th Street when it struck a 20-year-old female pedestrian traveling south to north over Beach Channel Drive. The
driver then fled from the scene. EMS responded and transported the victim to Jamaica Hospital in critical condition. According to FDNY, she had serious, life-threatening injuries. The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is investigating. As we go to press, it is not clear if the driver was apprehended or what the victim’s condition is at this time. The 100th Precinct was near the site in the last few days, handing out flyers on pedestrian safety.

WRONGFULLY CONVICTED FAR ROCK MAN GOES FREE A Far Rockaway man wrongfully convicted of an armed robbery in 1995, is finally free. On Friday, October 15, Queens County District Attorney Melinda Katz filed a joint motion with the defense to vacate defendant Chad Breland’s conviction and 15-year sentence for a November 27, 1995, armed robbery in Far Rockaway. The Hon. Michelle Johnson granted the joint motion and dismissed the indictment. The motion cited newly discovered evidence uncovered by the Queens County District Attorney’s Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) that both implicates another man in the crime and undermines the identifications relied on at trial to convict Breland. The CIU’s investigation stemmed from the discovery of an April 2000 fingerprint report connecting another man to the crime scene. Other evidence further implicated this other man in the crime. Although the April 2000 fingerprint report was forwarded to the 101st Precinct and
other NYPD officials at the time, the Queens County District Attorney’s Office was never notified of the fingerprint identification. DA Katz said, “The discovery of new forensic evidence has raised serious questions about the conviction of Mr. Breland more than two decades ago. The fingerprint report at issue did not exist at the time of Mr. Breland’s trial and was never forwarded to the District Attorney’s office. In light of the new evidence, justice requires vacating Breland’s conviction.” Breland was serving a 30-year sentence. At a consolidated trial in September 1997, Breland was also convicted of a second robbery under a separate indictment number. He was sentenced to a consecutive 15-year term for the second robbery under that indictment which is not the subject of the joint motion. Because Breland has completed his 15year term on the remaining indictment, he was released from prison on Friday.
RBNY-18 Reaches For the Top Way to go RBNY-18! The huge consort of locals who participated in the National Stair Climb in honor of fallen 9/11 firefighters, reached for the top! The local group surpassed their fundraising goal by $5,000, raising more than $11,000 for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. The big group met up at Rogers and hopped a coach bus to Belmont Park on Sunday, October 17. Firefighter and Wine With Sue singer John Burke was given the honor of singing the National Anthem to kick off the event. Then the group joined hundreds of other participants to climb 2,200 steps, or 110 stories around Belmont. With a boost of local support, the group was able to almost
double their fundraising goal for the cause. “These donations provide services for the families of the fallen, and for those whose battles with cancer and other 9/11 related illnesses have just begun. So, from the bottom of our hearts, our team thanks all of you for your generosity,” team captain Jen Fabry said in a social media post. City Council Candidates Make Their Case By Katie McFadden
Election Day is around the corner and to help residents of District 32 learn more about the candidates, the Belle Harbor Property Owners Association recently utilized their monthly meeting at P.S. 114 to hold a candidates’ forum. The meeting turned into an informative session with District 32 City Council candidates Joann Ariola and Felicia Singh, who both answered questions on issues that concern the community. The BHPOA and the Neponsit Homeowners Association worked together to make sure the forum was a success. Having dealt with previous sound issues, the civic hired DJs@Work to run the sound system for the night. Sarina Roffe moderated the event, asking the questions and keeping the peace. Republican Mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa, who had previously confirmed his attendance, was a no-show on Tuesday as he had to prepare for Wednesday’s de-
bate with Democrat mayoral candidate Eric Adams. However, that meant there was more time to focus on the candidates running for a position that will directly impact residents from Breezy Point to Rockaway to Broad Channel and the rest of District 32. Overall, the forum was a productive, informational and well-organized opportunity for voters to get to know who they’ll be choosing as their next City councilwoman. Roffe laid out the ground rules, asking that everyone treat
each other with respect and that people hold off on heckling and applause as the BHPOA had limited time in the auditorium and such disruptions would delay the forum. The questions that were asked were submitted by members of the community, so they reflected on issues that concern those living in District 32. They ranged in topics from social services to transportation, public safety, public health, land use, education and more. Introducing the candidates, Roffe described Singh as an ed-
ucator who comes from a family of immigrants. She is a lifelong resident of District 32, living in Ozone Park. She has dedicated her life to “empowering communities” through service, including two years as a volunteer with the Peace Corps in China, spearheading voter registration drives and community service projects with the Ozone Park Civic Association, and serving as Queens’ borough director of Amplify Her. She was elected to serve as a member of Assembly District 23’s County Committee and worked with the Census Bureau. She is running on a platform that includes fully funding schools, supporting small businesses and climate and environmental justice. Roffe described Ariola as someone born to working class parents, who is a parent herself and a grandmother. She was born in Ozone Park, raised in Howard Beach and educated in Rockaway at Stella Maris. Continued on page 14

She’s been a community advocate for 20 years and has worked for two mayors and members of city council as the director of intergovernmental affairs for Medisys, where she secures funding for noteworthy projects throughout the network and serves as a liaison between the hospital network and community boards, houses of worship and other groups. She was a member of the Queen Borough President’s hurricane task force following Sandy and, on an NY Rising committee to help develop climate resilient projects. She has been President of the Howard Beach Lindenwood Civic Association and a member of the 106th Community Council and Community Board 10. After a coin toss, Singh was given first opportunity to speak. She added that she is a workers’ rights advocate. As her father

Issues impacting community members, students and climate resilience in District 32,” she said. During her turn, Ariola noted, “there is such a tremendous contrast between the candidates running here.” She added, “public service is not just a job, it’s a calling. The fact that I’ve been active for 30 years shows you the commitment to that calling and my commitment to serve you.” Roffe then began questions, the first concerning personal safety and security. On the closing of Rikers Island, Ariola said, “I do not believe Rikers Island should close. I believe they should revert resources being used to open community prisons to restore, renovate and make Rikers a livable facility. We have to put money into it because the conditions are horrific.” Singh took an opposite stance. “85% of occupants in Rikers are awaiting trial. They haven’t been found

guilty or not guilty and it costs $1,000 a day for one person to await trial. I’m a proponent of closing Rikers, but I’m not a proponent of community jails either. The answer is not using tax dollars you paid to house people at Rikers, and community jails don’t work either.” On the civil unrest during the summer of 2020 and defunding the police, Singh said, “The civil unrest in summer 2020 was because of police brutality.” She said she doesn’t support abolishing the police, but rather defunding, meaning reallocating funds from the law enforcement budget to other services such as infrastructure and resiliency. “Law enforcement is not working the way it should in 2021,” Singh said. Ariola said the civil unrest last summer was a result of a peaceful protest being hijacked by looting and violence. “I’m of the opinion that what stands between us and chaos is the blue line that is called the NYPD,” Ariola said. “We cannot take away the police force. NYPD was the gold standard. There are way more good cops than there
The Rockaway Times are bad cops.” On rising crime like grand larceny and police being short staffed, the candidates were asked what they would do to make sure the 100th Precinct has additional resources. Ariola said, “I would not be in favor of further defunding the police another $1 billion because that would take more police off the streets. Public urination, panhandling, we don’t have to look anywhere beyond 116th Street to see what’s happening. I want to make sure our police department has all the tools they need to make sure they can address all those concerns.” Singh attributed the grand larceny to reports saying people left their cars unattended or not locking their doors. She then pointed to a rise in domestic violence reports in the precinct. “What it tells me is that the 100th Precinct needs help responding to domestic violence,” she said, adding that there needs to be more funding for programs that support domestic violence victims. CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATES Continued from Page 14 Regarding social services, the candidates were asked about De Blasio’s $3.5 billion spent on homeless services, while the homeless population is rising, and how they would address it. Singh said “It’s disappointing to see de Blasio promised affordable housing and not do it. There’s a lot about de Blasio that has failed the unhoused population,” she said. She said many don’t want to turn to shelters as they’re unsafe so there needs to be more of a move toward “truly affordable housing and job training for the unhoused population,” and suggested that a proposed bill, Intro 146, be signed into law to expand the Section 8 voucher program. Ariola said, "$3.5 billion spent on homeless and yet de Blasio and City Hall have seriously failed the population.” She suggested there be more healthcare and treatment programs available for the homeless population, as some suffer from mental health

Each were then asked how they would address the increase in quality of life issues and petty crimes since the shelter opened on Beach 101st. Ariola said, “We cannot warehouse people in shelters in communities. People being brought back there have criminal records. We need to give the NYPD back the authority to make those arrests. The way we have it structured now, where the police are handcuffed and everyone else runs wild, it’s only going to get worse until someone says no.” Singh reiterated supporting Intro 146 to help lower shelter capacities and increase the voucher system. “The bill exists but the mayor is not pushing it and that’s a travesty,” she said. As the economy took a hit due to Covid, the candidates were asked what they would do to bring back tourism. Singh said, “In the fiscal budget, the city allocated $10 million to tourism. These are tangible things we need to see here to support our small businesses,”
she said, adding that with pandemic assistance, Queens only saw 17% of funding, which was disproportionate compared to other boroughs. “We need to advocate for a trickle down to south Queens,” Singh said. Ariola said that since businesses struggled, there needs to be more done to support them, like helping small businesses fill out paperwork for funding. She also said addressing public safety is a big factor when it comes to boosting tourism. On education, each were asked whether or not specialized high school programs should be funded and supported. “Yes, I do think specialized high schools and gifted and talented programs should be funded. It needs to be made better and more inclusive, but keep it because it’s necessary,” Ariola said. Singh said after the pandemic, there are bigger issues than specialized high schools. As an educator, Singh supports fully funding all schools. On the topic of dedicating more resources to charter schools, Singh said while she worked for a charter school in
Coney Island, she is determined to fund all schools equitably and take care of neighborhood schools, so students don’t have to go far for quality education. Ariola said she believes people should have a choice of what type of school they go to and there should be tax breaks for those who may choose to not send their kids to public schools. On transportation, each were asked what they would change or keep from de Blasio’s Vision Zero plan. Ariola said she supports the ferry and wants to add more stops to it. She said there’s now more bus and bike lanes, but they’re not cohabitating with vehicle traffic. She also pointed out that people are being ticketed more with cameras. “I want to advocate for safer streets and safe ways to commute and make sure bicyclists are held to the same standard vehicles are so we can cohabitate,” Ariola said. Up until 1998, twice a year, Parks, in partnership with Sanitation, would maintain our beaches. In summer, workers from Parks and Sanitation pooled men and heavy machinery scaling the sand height from the back of our beaches down to the tide line following markings on measured bamboo poles they implanted. In autumn, sand height was lowered to make way for snow fences on angles to keep sand on the beach. In spring, our beach maintenance was repeated. In 1999, Parks performed the useless log drag and used the feckless beach rakes to give the appearance of maintenance. But that was all. What used to be twelve steps down from the boardwalk to the sand became two, sand piling up under the boardwalk and in the backs of beaches from Beach 126th east. Our beaches were smaller and higher but didn’t have to be. The reason was the city gave up on Rockaway beaches much like the feds have abandoned Riis Park. In 1997, Parks ‘experimented’ with dunes on Beach 140th and five neighboring blocks. They were constructed by Parks on weekends using heavy machinery they repeatedly said wasn’t available calling it an ‘experiment.’ The truth was, however, these six ocean front homeowners grew so sick of beach goers using their sea wall areas as latrines and party central, they chipped in $1,000 each for newly created property extensions; protections against
people rather than flooding. From that experiment, the unkempt Rockaway Dunes were born composed of sand that could have been used to replenish our beaches. Since Sandy, navigating the dune mats has denied access to our beaches for elderly and handicapped. No one cares. Locals are being fed the tripe that the Great Wall and ramps are instruments for making the beach handicapped accessible: ridiculous. Many handicapped can barely walk a few steps to their cars or wheelchairs let alone with baggage. So, stop the baloney. Our wall, a wall across our beaches: 14 feet of concrete topped with two feet of sand with an accompanying baffle-front walkway from Beach 126-149 is a game-changer for the community property values and all. Moreover, we can expect our baffle front walkways to be inundated with sand, unmaintained. Is the Great Wall of Rockaway the only way to stave off another hundred-year storm? Is it impenetrable against the tremendous pounding of a surging ocean? What if the wall collapses, carrying wall projectiles down beach blocks? Locals are being misled to believe ramps are instruments for making the beach handicapped accessible. Many handicapped can barely walk a few steps to their cars or wheelchairs. They can neither access the ramps nor wheel a chair on the angles warranted. What happens when they reach the base of the ramps? Wheelchairs don’t work in sand. Our natural beaches were once considered pristine, the quality of our sand the envy of beach communities the world over. Unless we abort the Great Wall of Rockaway, our reputation as a beach community will cease to exist. Future generations will suffer; and it will be our fault. Breezy Co-op opted out of the Wall because they refuse to sacrifice nature for concrete with no guarantees. Get active. Speak up. Stop the insanity, please. Joan Mettler

Chair of the Queens Republican Party, Joann Ariola, is running as the successor to her ‘good friend’ Councilman Eric Ulrich. Although the banners and signs you’ve likely seen all over the peninsula do not list her party, she has proclaimed herself the “commonsense candidate” and it is with the utmost sense of urgency that we refute that hyperbolic claim. According to the front page of the NY Daily News, Ariola has chosen to keep insurrectionist Philip Grillo in a position of power within her party (see Daily News front page article “Riot Guy Deleted” 9/24/21). According to a recent expose in NY1, she is implicated in the corruption scandal at the Board of Elections (NY1’s “Ballot Blunders: Looking at Patronage and Nepotism at NYC Board of Elections). Ariola also endorsed Donald Trump’s reelection in 2020, after four agonizing years of political scandal, embarrassment on the world stage, two impeachments, countless racist policies, and a botched response to the COVID pandemic. Asked about concerns regarding electric bikes and scooters, Singh said some are turning to these options since they don’t have cars and they’re faster than public transportation. She advocated for problem solving to figure out ways to deter people from using electric bikes and scooters on places like the boardwalk. Ariola said some who utilize these electric vehicles do so recklessly, and not just on the boardwalk, and applauded the NYPD’s efforts to confiscate some vehicles that are being used recklessly. On land use, each were asked about the December 2020 “Planning Together” proposal that would change the city land use process to ensure equitable growth. Ariola said Planning Together would take away input from community boards and said City Hall shouldn’t be able to dictate what’s best for communities on land use issues. “We want to see development but don’t want to see projects we don’t have a say in,” Ariola said. Singh said Planning Together doesn’t allow for any community input until Phase 3 and that city agencies need to work with community members on day one when it comes to planning. “We want to support community boards, change the red tape and make sure you have a say in your community,” Singh said. With one hospital on the peninsula, each were asked what they would do to improve healthcare here. “We need to have a trauma center and specialists on the peninsula,” Singh said, adding there needs to be more services for women. Ariola said, “We have St. John’s, and we have to do better by them. I would commit to funding that hospital to make sure they have what they need to serve this community and see more expansion of healthcare facilities affiliated with a hospital, further west on the peninsula." When asked if ID should be required to vote, the candidates took opposing positions. Ariola said, “Yes because it would dispel

Singh said, “Voting is a fundamental right that we cannot go backwards on. I would never support showing ID to vote.” Each candidate was then given time to make closing statements while answering a specific question. Singh said that in knocking on doors, she found most people want improved quality of life, including “trees trimmed, potholes filled, less garbage on the street and better schools. The issue that you have with my policies is not that I have plans, it’s that I support the expansion of what public safety looks like. You know what’s so beautiful about Belle Harbor when I knock on doors here? I see children playing basketball, they’re on their bikes, they’re playing with their parents, running across the street. I totally get why you want to preserve that. Your privilege is that you will have that no matter what but that is just not true of other parts of this district where someone stands outside and gets shot. While we will preserve your safety because you have it based on where you live, based on your socio-economic income, based on your race, you have that and that’s amazing. I want to make sure we expand what that looks like for the rest of this district.” Ariola said, “as part of the Queens delegation, there is equity in the dispersing of discretionary money. As far as capital money, I think because of the relationships I’ve garnered and working with people across the aisle and learning to negotiate with people who are not from the same party, because once we get to city hall, it is not about the party anymore. It is about providing what’s best for the community. It’s not about flipping the seat from red to blue because this seat has been blue and it has been red, but it’s always been well represented and that’s what you’ll get with me.” Election Day is Tuesday, November 2 at your designated polling location. He showed up to work only 67% of the time, ranking 46 out of 50 for worst attendance among his colleagues. He is also the only elected official of note to have endorsed Joann Ariola. This is not good enough. The participatory budgeting process is another metric for how our community has lost out. The councilperson has chosen to opt out of this process in recent years. From 2018 onwards, the 1-2 million dollars available for projects proposed by members of the public was left on the table. Neighboring district 31 prioritized the participatory budgeting process and was able to fund a myriad of school infrastructure projects. The Rockaway Times city council members is (and what they should be held accountable for), and how the participatory budgeting system works. Participants left with knowledge that can be turned into real powerwhat kind of money is available to communities like ours, how regular people can propose projects and gather support so they have a good chance of being funded through participatory budgeting. Knowledge is power, and Ms. Singh, a teacher, is acutely aware of this. Driving Etiquette Driving in New York City is a video game. It reminds me of the old video game Pole Position and the newer one Grand Theft Auto. My nephew, Tyler, plays a game where he drives like a lunatic and laughs. He runs things over, crashes and then can hop into a new car. It seems these games are becoming more real. People in New York City, especially Rockaway and Broad Channel, need to learn how to drive. What people also need to do is to learn simple driver’s etiquette. PS: I really only drive from Rockaway to Ozone Park, as I truly dislike driving. One law that is often violated in our town is the stop sign. I am unsure why people do not feel the need to stop. As I have mentioned many times, I live on Newport and it is the “Newport 500” with cars speeding, and then on the cross streets people do not stop for the stop signs which is a recipe for disaster. Each student who leaves my house after tutoring is told “Please be careful on Newport.” I saw an accident on Beach 121st Street and Newport last Friday afternoon. I am sure one person was speeding and/or the other person glided through the stop sign. FYI I hate the new stop sign heading onto Beach Channel Drive from Newport at Beach 116th. That will cause accidents. It was a yield sign for as long as I can remember, and I never saw an accident there. Red Lights. Please people, stop at the red lights. Do not speed up when you see the
“don’t walk” sign blinking. I see people run through the red light at Duane Reade and Beach Channel Drive each day and last week a young lady was struck by a car and is still in the hospital with a long recovery ahead. This is an area I have seen many accidents and have requested a red light camera there and was told we have too many in the area. While I agree there are a lot, I feel the one on Beach Channel Drive is needed as a deterrent. Speeding. I know this is a hot topic, especially with the lowering of the speed limit, on Cross Bay Boulevard it is 25 miles per hour. I get it, I had to place a post-it on my dashboard to remember that when driving home from work southbound on Cross Bay Boulevard, there is a new speed camera. One of my friend says that at night “that camera lights up like a Christmas tree.” The first week of school, I received a ticket, as did my daughter. Now I am driving much slower. PS: I am obsessed with the lawlessness on Cross Bay Boulevard as I drive through each morning. It is dark and people go in the left hand turning lane and go through red lights. Please, parents, tell your children the walk sign does not always mean walk. Not during rush hour. Kids, keep your eyes open. I used to be one of these speeders. But since I have seen so many fatalities and near fatalities recently, I have definitely slowed down.

IMPROVE OR UPGRADE? I often meet buyers and/or sellers contemplating the same dilemma: they need more space in their home for growing families. Should they put a lot of money into an existing home (or a potential purchase), or should they buy a bigger, more expensive house which doesn’t need a lot of work? years gone by. I’d try to avoid building permits, architects, and construction workers in our current environment. On the other hand, I have a comprehensive list of tradesmen if you want to seriously consider construction: this includes plumbers, roofers, masons, carpenters, architects, general contractors, etc. and even handymen. Of course, my suggestion to sell rather than upgrade is dependent upon obtaining an acceptable price for the existing home and buying the new home at a fair price. I can help. Living from a Spiritual Heart Before sitting down to write the column, I decided to clean our windows. Truthfully, because we will be sitting inside as the cooler weather arrives and you can’t help but see the accumulation of dirt. There is nothing like sparkling clean windows. This simply task brought back memories of my dear Mom cleaning all thirteen windows in Brooklyn on our 2nd floor apartment, sitting on the ledge! She took pride in her beautiful home while raising seven children in a five-bedroom apartment. We thought
we lived in paradise with love, happiness and a strong faith. Mom and Dad were powerful spiritual beings who believed in helping the poor. This simple task of cleaning windows also brought me to the theme for today’s column, Polishing the Mirror of our spiritual heart! Ram Dass wrote a beautiful book all about being here now with our spiritual being. “Polishing the mirror, this process of reflecting on ourselves by witnessing and by bringing our external life into harmony with our
true being, resolves when we identify full with our soul.” Life is better with a strong spirituality, physical presence and community. Walking the beach with my beautiful daughter she shares this insight from her good friend. What is a life without community, spirituality and physical well- being? How can we help others who don’t have what we possess? Isn’t the point to share what you make in life? So often we close off to the people around us to protect what is ours when the point is to give what we can. Charity begins in the home. “The game of enlightenment starts from exactly where you are in your life at this moment.” Where are you in life at this time? Can you be present with what is here now or do you seek more? Offering it up to God is what my mom always instilled in our family. We were blessed to have devotion and joy in our lives. Humor was always displayed in our home sometimes at the expense of one another. Of course, we ac-
cepted this as building character and strength. Truly, it made us feel seen and loved. We still have lots of laughter whenever we get together at family parties. There is always love and affection for one another. As I scrubbed my windows, I thought to myself, life is about shedding the layers that build up within our heart’s space. Each day is an opportunity to release what builds up in the body and mind. Perhaps taking time to do the ordinary tasks will lead to thoughts of deeper understanding of what in your life needs to be polished. It’s not exactly an external job but rather deeply internal. It will take time. Go slow. We have only this moment. May you find contentment in your life and reach out to those who feel empty in spirit. “How did the rose ever open its heart and give to this world all its beauty? Prediabetes and diabetes type 2 are common, estimated to affect about 34% and 13% of all U.S. adults in 2018, respectively. Prevalence of diabetes increases with age and was higher among American Indian/Native Alaskan, Hispanic, non-Hispanic Asian, and non-Hispanic Black persons than among non-Hispanic White persons. Diabetes was estimated to be the third leading cause of years lived with disability in 2016 and the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. in 2017, accounting for more than 80,000 deaths per year. Morbidity (illness) from diabetes is due to macrovascular disease (atherosclerosis), microvascular disease (retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy), and acute complications of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. Diabetes was the leading cause of kidney failure, lower-limb amputations, and

Prediabetes - Diabetes new cases of blindness among U.S. adults. Risk factors associated with the development of diabetes in adults include older age, family history, overweight and obesity, dietary and lifestyle factors, environmental exposure, and others. Three tests can be used to identify diabetes and prediabetes: hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), fasting plasma glucose level, or oral glucose tolerance test. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has set criteria for the diagnosis of both diabetes and prediabetes. For diabetes, the criteria are a HbA1c greater than or equal to 6.5%, fasting plasma glucose greater than or equal to 126, or oral glucose tolerance test glucose levels of greater than or equal to 200. For prediabetes, the criteria are HbA1c 5.7% to 6.4%, fasting plasma glucose between 100 and 125, and glucose tolerance test glucose levels between 140 and 199. In 2015, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommended screening for
abnormal blood glucose levels as part of cardiovascular risk assessment in adults aged 40 to 70 years who were overweight or obese. In addition, it recommended that clinicians offer or refer patients with abnormal blood glucose levels to intensive behavioral counseling sessions to promote a healthful diet and physical activity. This year, the USPSTF updated that recommendation to include all non-pregnant adults aged 35 to 70 years who are overweight or obese and who do not have symptoms of diabetes. While prediabetes is usually asymptomatic, symptoms of diabetes may include excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, blurred vision, and tiredness. The goal of screening for prediabetes and diabetes is to identify and treat these conditions earlier rather than later to prevent progression of disease and adverse outcomes including heart attacks, kidney disease, impaired vision, and death.
While there is little evidence that screening for prediabetes and diabetes by itself improves health outcomes, there is good direct evidence that interventions for newly diagnosed diabetes can have a positive effect on all-cause mortality, diabetes-related mortality, and the risk of heart attack after 10 to 20 years of intervention. In addition, there is good evidence that lifestyle interventions such as proper diet and exercise in those with prediabetes can reduce progression to type 2 diabetes. So, if you or someone you know is overweight or obese, not pregnant, and between the ages of 35 to 70 years, it is important to get screened for prediabetes and diabetes, especially if you have any relatives who have type 2 diabetes. The Foodie Report: O’SAKE JAPANESE RESTAURANT By Scott Ruscillo
If someone asked me to go out for sushi with them eight years ago, I would respond saying absolutely not. However, my girlfriend Karolina practically force-fed me some sushi at a sushi joint and it was actually delicious. I now enjoy sushi at least once every couple weeks. Sushi is popular from young teens to older adults. Many people can’t get enough of that delicious fresh seafood taste, with such a huge variety of options to choose from. I would say it’s a bit of an acquired taste for some, but I feel that there is a sushi choice for anyone. If you try one roll or dish and don’t like it, make sure to try a few other options until you find the one you love. This is what I did and I feel as if I struck gold once I ate that dressed up crunchy spicy salmon roll that tasted so damn good eight years ago. O’Sake Japanese Restaurant has been operating since 2006 with hundreds of regular customers like myself and thousands of orders each year. O’Sake prides itself on excellent service and only the freshest sushi. You can certainly tell that each dish is prepared with care because they are always consistent. There are times I may order dinner late, right before they close, and the dish I order is the same as if I placed an order much earlier. The proprietors, husband and wife duo Danny and Joyce Tung, work tirelessly and have always been supportive of their community. Every time I visit the restaurant, Joyce always greets me with a big smile and makes sure to ask how my myself and my father are doing. One of my favorite sushi rolls at O’Sake would be the Dynamic roll which consists of spicy tuna, crunch, scallion, avocado and caviar on top. I find such ingredients are a perfect fit with fresh tuna and hits the palate with a shocking great taste. Keep in mind, O’Sake has a hefty list of sushi options available, and you can always create your own if you would like to be a
bit imaginative. I find the roll options they have on their menu are perfect for beginner to advanced. You have options of various seafood choices and so many toppings to choose from. Spicy, raw, deep fried, cooked and sashimi which I will speak about shortly. Another favorite of mine would be the simple, yet delicious Hanada roll. This beginner type of roll consists of salmon and cucumber with salmon and avocado on top. It’s great for a beginner and you can always add anything else to it if you would like. I usually ask for some spicy mayo and crunch because what’s tastier than a little kick and some crunch? For the beginners, “crunch” or “crunchies” are light, crispy Japanese panko breadcrumbs. These unique bread crumbs are shaped more like flakes than crumbs, which gives them their unique texture. These are used as a crunchy topping or coating in sushi rolls and more. The menu at O’Sake has many other options besides for sushi. Sashimi is something that I enjoy with soy sauce or even some spicy mayo to dip it in. If you’re not sure the difference between sushi and sashimi, sushi is often made with fish and other types of seafood. It is also sometimes made with egg or vegetables like cucumber and

avocado then wrapped in a roll typically covered in rice. Sashimi refers to a delicacy of super fresh thinly sliced fish. Sashimi-grade fish is some of the highest quality seafood. These thin slices of fish pair great with either soy sauce, wasabi, or ginger. I would say that sashimi would be for more of an advanced palate but I started enjoying tuna sashimi right away. Other than excellent service and food, I find O’Sake to be a godsend due to their late hours. When I am pulling long work hours and need a good meal, I can count on O’Sake since they are open until 10:30 p.m. each night. Overall, O’Sake Japanese restaurant has a delicious option for anyone. Even if you may not be interested in sushi or sashimi, you can indulge in one of the many other appetizers or entrees
that they offer. O’Sake is located at 263 Beach 116th Street in Rockaway Park. Their number is 718945-8888. After years of hearing about the outcomes, during the school week, three local teachers, Mrs. Hayes, Mrs. Foti, and Mrs. Gigliello, came to cheer the girls on. Both teams played hard and competed until the end, but Blessed Trinity pulled away in the second half, and left with a hard earned 5-2 victory. Wrestle Talk WWE NEWS By Eric Jayden
This week we start off with news from the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). As reported by the Wrestling Observer Podcast, the WWE has announced that they are canceling their annual Tables, Ladders and Chairs (TLC) Pay Per View originally scheduled for December 19, 2021. As of now there will be no WWE PPV's scheduled for the month of December. The next scheduled PPV will be held on January 1, 2022, called "WWE Day 1" which was an event apparently created and spearheaded by Nick Khan of the WWE. This will most likely disappoint WWE Fans as this is one of the top favorite PPV's they look forward too. Matches, are contested under extreme rules with the use of tables, ladders and chairs all legal.
We have an update on the ongoing Bray Wyatt situation and these reports so far have been rumors on the reasons behind his release from the WWE. It has been rumored that Bray Wyatt may had been difficult to deal with as there were reported performance issues with his in-ring work
Bray Wyatt about him coming to AEW. We will continue to keep you posted on this developing story.
