!
the mission of St. John’s is to provide care for the community “and that’s our bottom line,” adding that he expects the hospital to “move forward without the constant rhetoric about closing.” (See Page 16)

Let’s Go Mets You Gotta Believe! How ‘bout them Mets? The usual underdogs of New York baseball are living up to their nickname, The Amazins, lately, making their way up through the postseason. The Mets played a tight five-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series, but they took the win with a 3-2 defeat in the final game on Thursday, October 15. Following the big win, Rockaway Times reporter Katie McFadden took to the beach to honor the team by creating a sand sculpture of the Mets logo. She used orange and blue hairspray to decorate the display. We posted a photo of her creation on the Rockaway Times Facebook page, and it quickly made the rounds. The photo was viewed by more than 15,000 people, received nearly 560
“Likes” and was shared 117 times. The Mets have continued to impress throughout the National League Championship Series against the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs, who haven’t won a World Series since 1908, showed determination throughout the NLDS, sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals, but the Mets have taken control of the broom in the NLDS, winning the first three games of the series. As we go to press, the Mets are just one game away from advancing to the World Series, which they haven’t won since 1986. The winner of the NLCS will face the either the Toronto Blue Jays or the Kansas City Royals, who are currently leading the ALCS with three wins. Let’s Go Mets! Yankee fans? Wait ‘til next year!

Downside Mets Mania Mets fans, take it easy. You know what might come with a World Series win? Have you thought about the consequences? I even find myself cheering for them and it’s reckless. I mean, I used to hate the Mets. Annoying Mets fans might still make me change my mind but for now I gotta, sorta, root for them. Rooting for them against the Dodgers was easy. I don’t care if the great Don Mattingly (he might be fired by the time I finish this sentence) was at the helm. It’s LA. If you’re from New York, you don’t
root for Los Angeles Anything. With me, it’s personal. I used to own a bar in Brooklyn called The Brooklyn Dodger. The Los Angeles Dodgers sued my partners and me for trademark infringement. Long story short, fat story thin: We went to court and won and were able to keep the name. But I was a sore winner. After our victory in federal court, we were media darlings for 15 minutes, getting in all the papers and on TV and radio. When interviewed by Howie Rose on WFAN radio I put a hex on the Dodgers.
I said, for suing this little Brooklyn business, the Dodgers would never win the World Series again. Well, presto! My evil-eye, hairy eyeball spell seems to have worked. They haven’t even gotten to the World Series since. Twenty-seven years and counting – the longest World Series drought in Dodger history. The tape of my interview with Howie was washed away in Sandy but I guess WFAN must have it in their archives. If die-hard Dodger fans want to get back and win a World Series they ‘ve got to get the Curse of The Brooklyn Dodger lifted. I can definitely be bought. Oh, but it’ll cost them. Meanwhile, I root for the Mets because they’ve been bad for so long. I root for them as a sympathy case. Met fans are like guys who over-celebrate in the end zone after a touchdown. Great players act like they’ve been there before. Like Jim Brown (like Yankee fans). I remember watching TV with a Mets fan when a commercial showing Babe Ruth came on. She said, without irony, hey look, he’s wearing Number 3, the same number as Rafael Santana. I guess the Cubs are even more of a sympathy case because they haven’t won since 1908 but they’ve got a tradition and legacy. Why mess with that? Met fans need love. Basically every Mets fan looks like Steve Bartman, the head-
Page 5 phones-wearing nerd blamed unfairly for helping the Cubs lose a playoff game a dozen years ago. But I can’t go all in on the Mets. Nobody should. Consider the consequences. If the Mets win it all, there will be a ticker tape parade. And you know what that means, right? Your favorite mayor, Bill de Blasio, will be leading the parade in the Canyon of Heroes. So if you get your heart broken, Mets fans, look at the huge silver lining: at least you won’t have a Boston Red Sox fan acting like he grew up in Shea Stadium.

Not Down with ADA Ramps By Katie McFadden The Belle Harbor Property Owner’s Association met for the first time on Tuesday evening after a summer hiatus to discuss some hot issues taking place in the neighborhood. Lots of vital information was provided by various agencies, but when the discussion turned to beach ADA ramps, the conversation took a downward slope. Residents want to nix Phase 6. Phase 6 is a recent addition to the boardwalk project by the Parks Department to add five Americans with Disabilities Act compatible ramps along the beach in Belle Harbor and Neponsit, something that sounds like a good idea with 16-foot high dunes now lining the beaches. Kylie Murphy, a project manager for the Capital Division of the Parks Department, along with Queens Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski, joined the meeting to present more details on the plan, and it wasn’t quite what people were expecting. The ramps would be located at about every five blocks, with proposed locations at Beach 128th, 132nd, 137th, 142nd and 147th Streets. The plan also calls for the creation of two vehicular access
dunes. On Tuesday, Murphy presented two design options that the Economic Development Corporation presented. The designs are nothing like the mats that Parks has used as temporary access ramps in recent years. The two designs, which would be permanent structures, look similar with a wishbone shape. They contain guard rails and hand rails and would end on the same beach they start on, with mobimats laid in a T-shape at the exit, allowing people to go to either side of the beach. The diagrams of the plans show that the ramps would cover a large portion of the beach. When asked how large they would be, Murphy explained that the entire ramp would be 353 feet long, and would take up about 180 feet of the beach. The plans were immediately met with backlash once they became clearer, and much of that backlash came from residents who are wheelchair bound or have family members that are. Some residents pointed out that despite the Army Corps’ attempt to add more sand to the beach, the beach is already smaller than usual, and the ramps would take away even more beach space. Another resident asked if they would have the option of avoiding
FROM THE SLIDESHOW points at approximately Beach 136th and 146th, in addition to the one that has existed at Beach 126th. Parks has been consulting with other agencies to come up with a design of the ramp that would comply with ADA standards and the Department of Environmental Conservation’s regulations of the
the ramp and entering the beach through a direct entrance. Murphy revealed that those on the blocks with these ramps would have no choice but to use the ramp to get down to the beach. “I spoke to DEC about this and we went back and forth and they told us they wouldn’t add additional access to Continued on page 28

Time Travel at Grassy Point By Katie McFadden
It looks like a house and functions as a bar, but Grassy Point Bar & Grill could very well be a museum. The longtime Broad Channel staple is a treasure trove of antiques and bar owner John McCambridge is its curator. With a wide liquor selection and huge flatscreen TVs showing the latest games, Grassy’s might look like your everyday bar, but stepping into Grassy’s is like going through a time machine. The owner, McCambridge, has been a longtime antiques collector, and when he bought the bar in 1971, he had the perfect décor. His wife also had a say in that decision. “My wife told me I couldn’t bring my collection home,” McCambridge joked over a pint at the bar. McCambridge had been brought up to appreciate classic treasures. “My mother collected antiques, so I grew up with it. I didn’t know what to do with the bar when I bought it, so I just started putting up stuff that I thought people might find interesting. It also gave me and my wife something to do. We used to go to auctions and garage sales and would go antiquing with the mindset of what we thought people would
find interesting and we decorated the place with it,” he said. Grassy Point has its own fair share of history. McCambridge has a collection of old journals with advertisements for the old Grassy Point Hotel dating back to 1912. According to McCambridge, the old building, which was located where the North Channel Yacht Club stands, was owned by the Hubbs and burnt down in 1939 after a Christmas tree fire. It wasn’t long before Grassy Point moved to its current location at 18-03 Cross Bay Boulevard. It continued as a hotel, until demand dwindled and the upstairs rooms were turned into apartments. McCambridge bought it in 1971. “At the time, I was working at Playland and I ran the games there for four years, but I got tired of dealing with people, so I said I’d like to do something on my own. The woman who owned the bar was looking to get rid of it, so I saved my money and bought the place,” McCambridge said. McCambridge has filled much of the bar with pieces of the community’s history. Towards the back is a large selection of old Broad Channel photos and postcards, which McCambridge says aren’t easy to find. “I go to postcard shows to
try to find Broad Channel scenes, but they’re so hard to come by, so I started collecting Rockaway postcards as well. I probably have 400500 Rockaway postcards and I’m lucky if I can find 50 from Broad Channel, but they’re still out there,” he said. Broad Channel items are a rarity and can come at a pretty penny. “A couple of shows back, I found a guy who had a Broad Channel postcard that I didn’t have. He wanted $75 for it. I couldn’t get myself to pay that price, but that just goes to show how rare these are,” he said. He also has Broad Channel artifacts like soda barrels from Weiss’ restaurant, a massive scale from O’Sullivan’s Pharmacy and another one from Harvey’s restau-
rant, all big parts of Broad Channel’s history. McCambride’s collection doesn’t just revolve around Broad Channel, though. He has some Rockaway memorabilia, including from Playland, where he had worked, but not as much as he hoped for. “I was always mad at myself because I didn’t get stuff out of Playland when it closed. I have some friends with items, but they won’t part with their stuff. They were smart enough to realize it should have been collected,” he said. You’ll also find a large collection of Coca Cola items throughout the bar like signs, bottles and even an old vending machine that Continued on page 10

asks for nickels and dimes. “I collected Coke because it was collectible and it seemed like there was so much of it that you could find it easily. I find some of the artwork attractive and I can appreciate it, McCambridge said. Although not antiques, some of McCambridge’s favorite pieces are models of classic cars. Opposite the postcard collection is a wall full of scaled down versions of old automobiles, with even more decorating the back of some of the booths in the bar. “I like cars and I can’t afford the originals, so this suffices, McCambridge said of the mini models, which he has labeled with the year and make. His most favorite is the 1955 Bel Air, which is much like his first car from ’56. The bar is decorated with plenty of other odds and ends like old ice cream makers, pinball machines, cigarette packs, train sets that doubled as liquor bottles, model boats, hundreds of tin signs, Cadet, Navy and Boy Scout uniforms and even an old, used straightjacket. Some of the items make you wonder, “how did you get that? Much like the Texaco gas pump, an old traffic light and even a massive post office wall, complete with dozens of PO boxes. “Some things are new, some things are old. Some things, I don’t even know I have. I’m shocked myself to find some of the stuff in here, McCambridge said as he acted as a tour guide around the bar. The artifacts cover almost every inch of the walls. You’ll even find surprises inside the bathrooms. Some may think of shows like the “Antiques Road Show or “American Pickers when walking through Grassy’s, which McCambridge is a fan of. In fact he has seen others sell similar items he has for a few thousand dollars on the “Antiques Road Show and “American Pickers once reached out to him. “Someone had written about me to them and they came down here with a scout and took
some photos and told me I might hear from them in the future, he said, but that was before Hurricane Sandy. McCambridge said his collection used to be larger, until Sandy. “I had six feet of water in the basement and lost everything down there. I had a 40-year-old collection of neon signs, which was probably the most valuable. I had a collection of comic books. I had antique holiday decorations and God knows what else. I put up a mental block of what I lost because it got to a point where I had a missionary group come in and clean it out for me. I had to walk away and let them do it because it was too depressing, he recalled. After 45 years in the business, McCambridge says he’s looking to retire and possibly sell the bar if the right offer comes along. “I’m at the stage in my life where I’m thinking of moving on and having some fresh blood and new ideas in here, the 71-year-old said. However he plans to continue collecting. “I don’t collect as much as I used to but I still look for stuff. I’m not going out and buying things like mailboxes anymore because I’m limited on space, but I still look, he said. McCambridge is also open to donations from anyone who wants to add to the collection.

The Lazer Speaks Friends: Silver & Gold
By Lou Pastina
Do you remember that old poem: “Make new friends, but keep the old; Those are silver, these are gold?” I used to read that poem to the kids when they were young, and always enjoyed it, and now that I seem to be closer to one end than the other, I appreciate the words of the poet even more. I recently had the opportunity to join a group of friends on a trip out east under the false premise of “fishing in Montauk.” These are guys I grew up with from grammar school days. Many years ago, one of the better of the group came up with the idea of getting the guys together for a trip that would include card playing, name calling, occasional imbibing (ok, also false), and the hopes of actually catching fish. The real mission was to get friends together. He was brilliant; unfortunately God recognized that brilliance and called him to greater projects. However he left us with this trip, which has grown over the years to include even more old timers. The group does not see each other every day; some don’t see each other until the trip itself. But once they arrive, some hobbling, some infirmed, we all spring back to the days when we grew up, as if the years in between were but seconds on a clock. It is a beautiful thing. I am sure you have experienced this phenomenon too. I see it in Rockaway all the time. Friends from grammar school days, both from those who lived here their whole lives and transplants from Brooklyn and Queens who arrived with their own. With friends like that, you never have to define yourself through who you are, what you do, what you know: they just love you for you. You are simply the friend they know from the time they first could make friends. It’s an indelible bond that can never be broken, as close to family as one can get. But then there are friends we find in life along the way. Sometimes you are alone, or in a different space and you really need a friend, and a person shows up in your life that just gets you. And that connection, perhaps not as old as others, is just as real and deep. It’s as if for a moment the veil has been lifted and we are able to see into each other’s souls for a brief moment, and that is all it takes. You never forget that glimpse, because that illumination has bonded you together forever. I remember growing up and asking my parents about their friends, because they spent so much time working, keeping the house run-

ning, and with us, their kids, that I never saw them with friends. Whenever I asked them who their best friend was, they usually replied that it was their soul mate across the table. Of course they never used the word “soul mate,” but that was what they meant. At first I found this hard to understand. As a kid I went out and played everyday and had plenty of friends, and of course everyone had a “best friend.” Who was theirs? As we got older and left the house, we discovered they indeed did have many friends and when life provided them the time, they reconnected with them and shared vacations, lunches and dinners with friends both old and new. I hadn’t recognized the sacrifice at the time, but I do now. Especially since I get the opportunity to do the same at this point in my life. It is truly a blessing we don’t always appreciate. Sometimes we hold grudges, old and new. I know I have been told I do (don’t worry I’ll get those people!). Silly stuff really, when you consider how quickly time really does go by. So with that I leave you with the poem, keep your friends and treat them well, and a smile to friends new and old.
Silver and Gold Make new friends, but keep the old; Those are silver, these are gold. New-made friendships, like new wine, Age will mellow and refine. Friendships that have stood the testTime and changeare surely best; Brow may wrinkle, hair grow gray; Friendship never knows decay. For ‘mid old friends, tried and true, Once more we our youth renew. But old friends, alas! may die; New friends must their place supply. Cherish friendship in your breastNew is good, but old is best; Make new friends, but keep the old; Those are silver, these are gold.

Halloween Horror Coming to Playland By Katie McFadden Ladies and gentlemen, step right up to the world of “Alice in Playland,” a twist on the classic Lewis Carroll tale in a way you’ve never seen before. ‘Tis the season of scares and screams as we approach Halloween and Playland Motel is here to help you celebrate accordingly. Halloween is coming to Playland at 97-20 Rockaway Beach Boulevard starting this Saturday, October 24 and Halloween weekend on Thursday, October 29, Friday October 30 and Saturday, October 31. From 6 to 9 p.m., all ages are invited for an evening of hair-raising fun with festive, interactive event. For those who spent their Halloweens at the annual haunted house event in Fort Tilden, Playland’s event might seem similar. After all, it’s being orchestrated by the same creative crew lead by artist Geoff Rawling. The event started out at the home of Marina and Kevin Callaghan on Beach 123rd Street in the early 1990s until it moved to Fort Tilden, where it took place in the theater and eventually moved to the Rockaway Artists Alliance’s T7 building. The last time the event was held was in 2011.
It was set to take place in 2012, but Sandy was a bit of a distraction. “The storm stopped Halloween. We were halfway through building the display when the storm hit. Ironically, T7 was untouched, but you couldn’t really run Halloween because people’s lives were in chaos,” Rawling said. Now the event has a new home at Playland. “We took it on the road,” Rawling said, thanks to Playland owner Dan Cipriani, who asked Rawling if he would bring it back after a recommendation from Playland bartender Aileen Andre. “Dan contacted me and said he would like to do this, so I gathered the usual suspects who were involved with the Poseidon’s Parade from the Rockaway Mermaid Brigade to help pull this off,” Rawling said. “I can’t wait to see this all come together. There’s not much going on this time of year. We just had a successful Poseidon’s Parade with all of that cool, creativity and I want to keep the momentum going on here,” Cipriani said. “I love Halloween. It’s one of my favorite holidays and Geoff has been such a creative force here. He painted some of the rooms in the hotel and I knew he’d been involved with haunted houses before.
PITCHFORKS are ready There wasn’t one out here anymore. The whole idea of the new Playland is bringing the community together and making it a family friendly place, so we wanted to do something fun for both adults and kids and I think this will be perfect.”
Creative mastermind Rawling has designed the set and, along with Tony Curcio and Tommy Burke, has been building it from scratch in the backyard area of Playland. Members of the Mermaid Brigade like Continued on next page

Halloween Horror Coming to Playland Continued from previous page
Matt Smilardi, Casey Brouder, Becky Brouder, Michael O’Leary and the Cryan sisters will be among the performers, with Rochelle Grubb making magic happen with makeup. “It’s rumored that Jerry Rea and his entourage might be appearing and countless other freaks, misfits and pirates,” Rawling added. With Alice in Wonderland as the main theme of the event, guests can expect to see some of their favorite characters and you’ll be invited to a tea party, if you dare. “I’ve always been an Alice freak. My grandma used to read it to me. Lewis Carrol turns worlds upside down and inside out, which is symbolic of Halloween. It’s a time when the veil is lifted between the living and the dead. A time when things are turned upside down and spirits wander around. Also, playing off of Wonderland and Playland seemed like a good fit. We’ll be having tea parties and decapitations by the order of the Red Queen and lots of late white rabbits running around,” Rawling said. Circus freaks will also tie into the theme of the evening. “It’s like Alice in Wonderland, taking place in a haunted amusement park formerly known as Play-
land,” Rawling said. Those who are brave enough to walk through may have their senses tested as their reality is transformed. “We’re always aiming to stimulate all the senses. Along with the blood and guts, I personally like the mystery of Halloween and when you’re doubting reality, that’s a much more meaningful scare,” Rawling said. There will be plenty of surprises, but we don’t want to give too much away. Out of a 1-10 on the scary scale, Rawling says the event will be a “9.999,” but all ages are encouraged to come. “It’s for all generations. The kids who are most scared always come back and come through another three or four times and always scream louder each time. Halloween is a chance for people to let out their extremes before they go into hibernation over the winter,” Rawling said. The set is being designed so that it’s handicap accessible, but Rawling says it might not be ideal for everyone. “If you have a weak heart or a weak bladder, you probably shouldn’t come,” he said. The family-friendly portion of the event will take place between 6-9 p.m. but it will stay open longer if there’s demand. “We don’t shut it
GEOFF RAWLING putting scary touches on Playland down, as long as there’s people on line,” Rawling said. However, the nights will be more geared toward adults after 9 p.m. “There’s going to be plenty of shenanigans. The bar will be fully decked out for Halloween for the adults,” he said. On the final
night, Halloween, Rattrap Bumpkin will be playing and Playland will host a costume contest. A $10 donation is suggested for the Alice in Playland feature to help cover the costs of the event.

Ramps Are Wrong Dear Editor: On Tuesday evening, I attended the Belle Harbor Property Owners Association meeting. On the agenda was the Parks Department’s planned Phase VI ADA Ramps and Vehicular access. Parks is proposing placing 5 ADA ramps at the following beaches: 128th,132nd,137th,142nd, 147th. The ADA ramps will not only take up over 180 feet of each of our beaches, but a person will only be able to access the beach on those blocks via the ADA ramp. The ramps are not a good thing for our beach (and I say this as someone in a wheelchair). I urged the Parks Department to keep the mobi mats as they currently are on all the beaches (B131/133 are usable for a wheelchair). Next Tuesday, Oct. 27th at 7 p.m. at Martin De Porres HS (formerly Stella Maris), there will be another meeting with the Parks & Public Safety Committee. If you care at all about the future of our beach, try to attend this meeting and voice your concern. I found that tonight, my voice was heard, but we need many people to attend the meeting. Mary Ellen Olsen
The Gift Of Life Dear Editor: They call it the gift of life but do you ever really think about what that means until you actually see it in action? Since I have been 18 years old, I have been giving blood, usually through the collections held at St. Francis de Sales. The usual crowd of Michael Lee, Frank Chimera, Joe Keenan and myself pile in after the 7:30 mass is ended and patiently sit on the folding chairs, waiting to be called after filling out the lengthy and comprehensive forms necessary to donate blood. It’s like musical chairs. One person is called, the rest all get up and advance to the next seat. And so it goes until it’s your turn. They look over your form, review your answers, take your temperature, prick your finger to draw out some blood for testing and then finally you lay on a table and pump out your blood. It’s easy. You only really see the blood flowing into the clear plastic bags from the people who are on tables across from you. You only see your bag of blood once the technician clamps it off and holds it next to you. You never realy think about where that bag is going, or who will get it. Until someone you love is at the other end of the gift.

As I sat beside my husband at the hospital and watched the nurse put up the fifth pint of blood for him to survive, I thought, “Thanks to the generosity of some strangers, my husband will live.” To all those who have ever donated blood, thank you. Maureen Walsh
SOCIAL SECURITY BLUES Dear Editor: There must be a better way to determine Social Security increases for seniors! The Department of Labor currently uses the CPI {consumer price index}. The Social Security Adminisration announced this week that there will be cost of living increase this year. “The energy costs were down this year,{cost of gasoline}; this was given as the main reason for no increase.”; RIDICULOUS!!!! This affects 65million seniors. Lets all contact our Congressmen, and State Senators, and request an Executive Order regarding this. Why are seniors being shortchanged due to an outdated calculation. SENIORS HAVE BILLS ALSO!!!!!! Bill Dickesheid
He’s Right Dear Editor: (Regarding last week’s letter from Danny Ruscillo on Rockaway needs) Danny Ruscillo is correct. Dunes look nice and protect us from minor storms but they will erode and disappear with every new storm. We need jetties, seawalls, barriers and regular beach replenishment to protect us from hurricanes like Sandy. We need to raise our streets and homes ASAP. We also need to repave our roadways and get rid of exclusive bike and bus lanes, speeding and bus lane cameras that steal our time, freedom, money and transportation options from commuters. We need to raise the subway tracks along Jamaica Bay and restore the QueensRail, the ferry, free bridges, fix the Shuttle and A train and extend our buses to eliminate unnecessary transfer delays. We need to increase buses on our highways to reduce travel times and we need to get rid of Mayor (25 mph, Zero Vision, Gridlock, Free Speech Zone, Select BS, traffic calming, bus stop consolidation, affordable housing, homeless shelters, and you might get a ferry in 2017-18) DeBlasio and support and vote for (Law and Order) Joe Concannon for City Council in Northeast Queens. NEW CEO GERARD WALSH and Bishop Provenzano
St. John’s Health Improving By Kevin Boyle St. John’s Hospital has a reputation to overcome. And their leadership knows it. At a forum Tuesday night in Arverne, organized by a group called Coalition To Support St. John’s, Bishop Lawrence Provenzano said the mission of St. John’s is to provide care for the community “and that’s our bottom line, adding that he expects the hospital to “move forward without the constant rhetoric about closing. This was essentially the same message the Bishop delivered in July when he introduced the hospital’s new CEO, Gerard Walsh. And it’s the same message Walsh, who was also present, has been delivering “from the Five Towns to Breezy Point, and all points in between since he took the helm at the beleaguered hospital. The “hospital aims to be more than a cluster of buildings around Beach 19th Street. Walsh said the health care landscape is changing and it will be St. John’s mission to “bring health care to the community. We have the opportunity to provide powerful changes. Some of those changes will begin with basic renovations such as the overhaul of the hospital elevators which Walsh described as “horrific. The elevators, notorious for breaking down and being painfully slow, will undergo an upgrade costing in the neighborhood of $3 million and allow the hospital to improve its “vertical transportation (going from floor to floor). Other changes will come in the form of personnel. Walsh says St. John’s has a “fabulous medical teaching program and a major goal will be retaining doctors who come to St. John’s for training. As they retain these “young, energetic doctors he aims to increase primary care presence in the community. He said people should not have to “go over a bridge to get care. Walsh said new department chiefs have been named in Cardiology, Surgery, Emergency and Gynecology. The personnel push will go handin-hand with equipment upgrades and cited new echo cardiology
equipment such as an example. “It pains me that people have to leave the community to get such services, he said. Walsh reiterated his plan to extend services beyond the Beach 19th Street campus. He said a pediatric office opened nearby in a location that had long been vacant. And Beach 129th Street in Belle Harbor is now home to a St. John’s primary care office, the St. John’s Medical Group, in what was formerly Dr. David Lichenstein’s office. He said sub-specialists (such as cardiologists, surgeons, ob-gyn) will be available at the site. Walsh said they have a plan to open up “quite a few locations along the peninsula, particularly for “behavioral health services. The new CEO said a SWOT analysis is underway. The SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Strengths) review will help form a strategic plan which will roll out in early 2016. Walsh said “it not my plan, it’s the plan of the “entire organization and the community. The hospital will engage in various outreach initiatives to get feedback. The forum, coordinated by Lew Simon, also included the hospital’s Chief Financial Officer, Steven J. Guido, Chief Information Officer, Kelly Barland, and Suzanne Timmer, Vice President of Development all of whom took questions from the crowd which filled the room at Arverne by the Bay Community Center. Of course, St. John’s needs more than a charm offensive. For one thing, they need 10 million dollars in state funds to finish work on a new Emergency Department. It was hoped the money would be in place by now and it remains unclear when, and if, these funds will be delivered. But what is clear is that the new leadership at St. John’s is determined to “move forward and “serve the community. If city, state, and federal officials believe the St. John’s mission is attainable, money will find its way to the hospital. The plan is underway.

Rockaway Neighborhoods: Rockaway Beach By Dylan Watton In 1952, the widescreen revolution began with the introduction of the movie and screen making process known as Cinerama. In classic ‘50s fashion, the introduction of the process was rolled out as a must-see theater event complete with programs and reserved seating, often in only one theater per city. The film begins in blackand-white and a square projection, with upper-crust newsman Lowell Thomas droning on about the history of motion pictures. Eventually, he concludes his speech with an unenthusiastic “Ladies and gentleman, this…is Cinerama!” The curtain opens in full color to a white roller coaster beginning its steep descent to sounds of a brass bonanza, overlooking the ocean on a picturesque sunny day. The shot may seem familiar to longtime Rockaway residents—it was taken from the Atom Smasher, the roller coaster at Rockaways’ Playland, a
the neighborhood as a stark reminder of Robert Moses’ ill-fated and nonsensical plan to create a highway connecting Brooklyn to the Hamptons. This would explain the curious two-lane nature of the road that until recently failed to connect to any other major road in Rockaway. Rockaway Beach is also home to the 100th Precinct, one of the two NYPD stations that serves the neighborhoods of the Rockaways. The A train crosses into Rockaway within the boundaries of Rockaway Beach and the western side of the line in Rockaway makes three stops in the area at Beach 90th Street, Beach 98th Street, and Beach 105th Street. The Q22 runs the length of the street that takes the neighborhood’s name, Rockaway Beach Boulevard (one the major thoroughfares throughout the entirety of the peninsula), along with the Q53 and Q52 which run into Queens. The neighborhood is current-

ROCKAWAY BEACH has a bay, too! former staple of the neighborhood that is Rockaway Beach. While the term “Rockaway Beach” is often used interchangeably to describe the peninsula as a whole, it is in fact its own unique neighborhood. By zip code, it begins at around Beach 98th St., going eastbound, the first use of the 11693 zip code. The three Surfside Towers on Shore Front Parkway mark the unofficial start of the neighborhood as it shifts from Rockaway Park to Rockaway Beach. Indeed, Shore Front Parkway cuts through the entirety of
ly the only place where the new boardwalk lies. Due to its proximity to the ocean it was among the hardest hit neighborhoods on the peninsula post-Hurricane Sandy. But this proximity has led to a resurgence in the following three years since the storm. On Rockaway Beach Boulevard, a number of new restaurants and boutiques have popped up since the storm. This includes the Community House, Playland Motel, Whit’s End, Chicks to Go, Uma’s, Sayra’s, The Continued on next page

The co-op has both east and west locations and has been around for generations. Katy Grey grew up in 102-00 and has been a resident her entire life. “You have an extended family from growing up in the buildings—I have about 15-20 friends from buildings still,” she said. “I loved growing up right across the street from the beach, and before Sandy, the handball and basketball courts.” Liz Donohoe was born in Rockaway and baptized at St. Camillus before moving to Brooklyn. She returned nine years ago and lives on Beach 105th Street. “I really feel like I never left,” she said. “We used to stay in the boarding rooms over by Connolly’s during the summer and go to Playland and the beach. That was like our big vacation.” She loves the ease with which she can go through Rockaway Beach. “You can bike to a lot of different places,” she said. “There’s a lot of artsy stuff. It’s great to see the kids playing hockey again at the rink. You can walk anywhere you want to go. And there are plenty of places to eat.”
cations in Rockaway Beach since 1982 and has lived between Beach 98th Street and Beach 134th Street since 1968. “Back in the early ‘80s the area around my shop was becoming very undesirable. An investor came in and started building along Shore Front Parkway and it completely turned the neighborhood around.” He also cited the building of neighboring complex Arverne by the Sea as a key factor in Rockaway Beach’s revitalization. Grey has been thrilled with the Rockaway Renaissance, so much of which has taken place in Rockaway Beach. “Seeing people realize that Rockaway is a destination and not just a dumping ground for the city has been wonderful. There’s still a lot of work to be done, too. But I love seeing all of these new little restaurants and these new little shops.” Donohoe says that nothing has compared to living in Rockaway Beach. “If you come home at night the whole Manhattan thing drops away from you. You cross the bridge and you’re in another world. Once you get the sand in between your toes it’s hard to lose it.”

Dance In The Rain “Dance when you’re broken open. Dance if you’ve torn the bandage off. Dance in the middle of the fight. Dance in your blood. Dance when you’re perfectly free.” ~~Rumi How often do we want to throw in the towel and give up when the times get tough? Life can be really difficult and not always fair. One day we are fine, the next day we are given news that was never in our plans. We can never totally prepare for these days but we can learn to respond in a positive way by continuing to live our lives fully. Never give up and use the tools that have been around for many years. Start by spending time with yourself. Learn to be quiet and listen. Take some deep belly breaths and feel the presence of the quiet immensity of your soul. You are a beautiful being with an amazing gift. Feel, listen, smell, touch and be aware of every sense in your body. You can begin to heal your mind and body simply by being aware and slowing down. “My dear heart hope is all you have, don’t let go if the entire world is up against you, hold onto your pal there are wondrous secrets going on.”~~ Rumi Fear can sometimes prevent us from feeling free and whole. Find your center and work from that place. For many, the center is the core, for others it is the heart. Directing your breath into these areas will strengthen you and perhaps remove the fear. Long, steady, full breaths with a pause between the in-breath and out-breath. Use a
mantra, I breathe in, I breathe out, or inhale peace, exhale calm. Every day wake up and set an intention. Work towards the intention and be patient. Do the work without looking for immediate results and do it consistently. In yoga we are taught: practice every day and all will come. To be a master in the yoga practice you are steady and comfortable in the pose. This will spread to other areas in your life. You will be at ease in your body and mind even when the dance is interrupted. Difficult situations may not affect you adversely. Your steadiness of mind will spread to those around you, improving family, work life and all those who you come into contact with. Just do the work every day with no expectations. Trust me, this is the path and it’s not an easy one but it works miracles. One of my favorite quotes: “We are not here to wait for the storm to pass but to learn to dance in the rain.” So dance, sing and do what you love. Find your passion and do it. Henri Nouwen offers a simple practice of asking yourself---“Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone’s face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and resentment? Did I forgive? Did I love? These are the real questions. I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will bear many fruits, here in this world and the life to come.” Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu ~May all beings everywhere be happy and free.

Marsh Of The Oysters: Pilot Project Seeks To Stop Erosion And Bring Back Bivalves A new pilot project is seeking to stem the tide, literally, of Jamaica Bay in order to prevent further erosion to the marshlands. As reported in the New York Times, five wave attenuators have been installed off of Brant Point in Arverne. They anchored to the bottom of the bar through the use of thick rubber bands. To the naked eye, they look like five little green islands. They are in fact made from recycled plastic and smooth cordgrass. The artificial attenuators are actually substituted for oyster beds. Oysters are experts at filtering water, with one adult being able to chug through 25 gallons per day. Two oyster beds have been installed in the recent past in Jamaica Bay but only lasted for fiveto-six years (the lifespan of the oysters)—no new larvae came in to continue the process. It is believed that beds were not large enough to sustain continued growth. The city’s Environmental Protection Department plans to install a halfacre oyster bed again next spring.
Page 21
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2015
The goal of the project is to protect the precious marshlands, which are extremely productive ecosystems serving as natural filters, home for wildlife, and protection against storm surges. In the 1800s, Jamaica Bay contained 16,000 acres of marshland. Due to the construction of JFK Airport and highways, pollution, tidal erosion, and more, there are just 8001,000 acres remaining today. The project will be studied over the next two years. Officials will monitor the line of marsh along the shore where the attenuators are installed to check if the marsh has receded at a slower pace.

October Waves: Photography by Sandra Gottlieb at Hall of Science EXTENDED THROUGH NOVEMBER 10 From The New York Hall Of Science: The New York Hall of Science announced October Waves, an exhibition of thirty large-scale seascapes by Sandra Gottlieb, will run from September 1, 2015 – October 31, 2015 in the museum’s LeCroy and Ramp Galleries. The museum is located at 47-01 111th Street, Queens. (The Museum hours are: Mon – Fri, 9:30 am – 5 pm; Sat & Sun, 10 am – 6 pm). October Waves is a photographic exploration by Gottlieb, a remarkably inventive and prolific artist, and is her sixth series of seascapes photographed in Rockaway in the last 15 years. This most recent series is a documentation of the 2013 hurricane season when the sea and swells were caught up in a rough and tumble drama. “Sandra Gottlieb’s camera confronts the cascading waves with results as profound as they are beautiful and compelling. Creating meditations in time, her lens
dissects a temporal curve, catching the waves with each frame as they play like actors upon a stage. Her interests envelop both the conceptual and the romantic in a wondrous duality . . . Her mastery of the medium allows her vision to reverberate between the two, making her photographs rich material for consideration while simultaneously offering the oceanic images up to the viewer’s simple and sensual enjoyment,” Phil Tarley said. Critic Dominique Nahas observes, “Gottlieb immerses herself and her viewers into what might be called the dramaturgy of the Wave, its Sturm und Drang. October Waves gives us not only the local color, so to speak, of Rockaway Beach, it also offers the viewer what appears to be thirty different character studies or individual portraits of waves.” Gottlieb’s solo exhibitions include the Alden B. Dow Museum of Art and Science, Midland, MI; Krasl Art Center, St. Joseph’s, MI;
Cedarhurst Center for the Arts, Mount Vernon, IL; The Ormond Memorial Art Museum, Ormond Beach, FL; Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Atlanta, GA; Robert Ferst Center for the Arts, Atlanta, GA; Danville Museum of Fine Art & History, Danville, VA; Ashtabula Arts Center, Ashtabula, OH; an upcoming exhibition at the
Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, Tampa, FL in January 2016; and the Chicago Academy of Sciences’ Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (to be announced). Sandra can be reached at sandragottliebinfo@me.com. Her website is: www.sandragottlieb.com ADVERTISEMENT

DOC By Peter Galvin, MD
Bell’s Palsy Bell’s palsy is a common acute neurological disorder of the facial nerve. It is named after Sir Charles Bell who in 1821 first described the anatomy of the facial nerve. The facial nerve, also called cranial nerve VII, originates in the brain, not the spinal cord, and exits the skull near the ear. The facial nerve is a mixed sensory and motor nerve and carries fibers involved in facial expression and movement, taste, tears, salivation and sensation of the ear. Bell’s palsy affects about 20 people per 100,000 annually and is an equal opportunity afflicter. It is slightly more common in people over 40 and is seen more commonly in people with diabetes, pregnancy, severe preeclampsia, obesity and hypertension. The symptoms are often mistaken for a stroke. Bell’s palsy causes one-sided facial weakness and drooping, abnormal taste and reduced tearing. Often it begins with pain in the area of the ear. The simplest way to tell the difference between Bell’s and a stroke is that Bell’s affects the entire side of the face, including the eyebrow. A stroke does not usually affect the eyebrow. So if the patient cannot raise the eyebrow or furrow the brow on the affected side it is very likely Bell’s palsy. Additionally, patients with Bell’s cannot smile or puff out the cheek on the affected side. The cause of Bell’s is thought to be inflammation. The herpes simplex virus type 1 (causes cold sores) is suspected but not yet proven to be the cause. Rarely, trauma to the side of the head can
also damage the facial nerve causing the palsy. Testing and imaging studies are not usually necessary unless symptoms are inconsistent with Bell’s. For example the onset of Bell’s is usually very rapid, occurring in less than one day. If the onset of facial weakness is slower, occurring over a week or two, another cause must be sought. The treatment most often given is oral steroids. Antiviral medications have not been shown to be of benefit. Likewise surgery, acupuncture and physical therapy are not indicated. Protection of the eye is very important. Because patients with Bell’s cannot fully close the eye or form tears the risk is that the cornea will dry out, damaging it. Frequent application of lubricant eye drops with natural tears is very important. Symptoms usually fully resolve in less than a month but up to 30 percent of people may have residual symptoms at six months and seven to 12 percent may have a recurrence. Thankfully long-term complications due to aberrant nerve regeneration are rare but may include incomplete eye closure, tearing while chewing (“crocodile tears”), involuntary movement of the corner of the mouth with blinking or closing of the eye with jaw opening (“jawwinking”). If you or someone you know has these symptoms it is important to get to your doctor quickly. Earlier treatment often leads to earlier resolution. the beach at these locations. Having additional structures off of the ramp would be a hazard and they don’t want the structure to lift in a storm surge and come into the streets. They also don’t want people walking through the beach grass on the dunes,” Murphy said. Some residents asked why Parks can’t just use more of the plastic mats that have been used as tem-
porary measures, as they have worked out just fine. Lewandowski explained that the mats do not meet ADA standards and now is the time to install permanent measures, as this project can be incorporated into the boardwalk rebuild that FEMA has allocated $480 million for, which must be used within a certain timeframe or else Parks won’t be reimbursed. “We have an opportunity with the new berm to
WERE YOU UNABLE TO APPLY FOR THE

SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM BECAUSE OF A DISABILITY? NOW YOU CAN! In 2012, NYC operated a one-time food assistance benefit program for residents impacted by Super Storm Sandy called the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP). NYC is re-running the program from October 3 through 25, 2015 for those who qualified but could not apply in 2012 due to a disability.
Can I apply? If you lived in one of the following zip codes on October 27, 2012: 10002, 10306, 11224, 11235, 11231, 11691, 11692, 11693, 11694, 11697, 11229 (Gerritsen Beach south of Allen Avenue in Brooklyn), or 10305 (North Midland Beach south of Seaview Avenue in Staten Island) AND you lost income or had expenses (other than replacing food) as a result of Super Storm Sandy
AND did not receive regular SNAP benefits between October 27, 2012 and November 25, 2012
You may be eligible for Super Storm Sandy D-SNAP benefits for Persons with Disabilities. How can I apply? You can apply in person Saturdays and Sundays, October 3-25, 2015. You can also request a home visit. Find out how and where to apply at www.nyc.gov/HRA or call: 929-221-0047

create something that’s long-term and will not require operations, maintenance and staff to install them every year like the mats. This will provide permanent ADA access that will always allow someone with a disability to get over the dune. In larger areas, we will use mobimats, but we cannot buy them with FEMA funding. The mobimats are purchased with capital dollars and will not be reimbursed by FEMA, so we can put them in some locations and not others,” Lewandowski explained. They also explained some of the plans to add additional vehicle access points, which would primarily be used for emergency vehicles, but small Parks vehicles would also have access to them. The design of the vehicular access point is still in the beginning stages and hasn’t been completed, but they would give vehicle the ability to get over the dunes and not through them. Residents also argued against this, saying there has always been one vehicle access point at Beach 126th Street and that additional points are not wanted. “Having vehicles on the beach is a danger to beachgoers,” a resident said. Lewandowski said it would do more help than harm. “It would be helpful to have additional emergency vehicle access points because these are swimming beaches and we need emergency vehicles to be able to get to the beach quickly,” she said. Due to the limited window to receive FEMA funding for the project, Parks is hoping to move plans forward quickly. “We want to bring this design to the Community Board in November. We’re seeking to get approval so we can get the designs and permits to move forward. Hopefully we’ll start the project before Memorial Day 2016 and finish by Memorial Day 2017,” Murphy said. However pushing the project forward now may mean it will cause some conflict once the Army Corps of Engineers completes its feasibility study and implements their permanent protective measures, which isn’t expected to take place until around 2019. Lewandowski says that won’t be an issue. “Anything the Army Corps disturbs that the city put in will be recreated or restored. The ramps would be realigned or reconfigured after the Army Corps plan. The City believes we should go forward with this now so we can operate the beaches more safely. We would lose the FEMA funding if we don’t use it now and we want to try to give the proper access for you,” Lewandowski said. However residents are in no rush. In fact, the general consensus at the meeting was leaning toward residents not wanting this plan to go through at all, or at least to be discussed further. “We can
The Rockaway Times agree to disagree,” BHPOA president Hank Iori said. “We want to see this postponed.” Iori advised attendees to come out for further discussion on the topic during the Parks & Public Safety Committee Meeting at Martin de Porres High School (140 Beach 112th Street) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27. The topic will also be discussed during the Community Board meeting on November 10. The 100th Precinct and a community liaison for the DDC also made presentations at the meeting. Captain Craig Adelman of the 100th Precinct let residents know of ways they can get more involved with their local precincts by contacting Neighborhood Coordination Officers directly with non-emergency issues like noise complaints or suspicious activity. Belle Harbor’s officers are Paul Candela (917-386-4943 or pail. candela@nypd.org), Ismael Remigio (917-242-8958 or Ismael.remigio@nypd.org) and Sgt. James Bigg (917-374-4573 or james.bigg@ nypd.org). These officers are designated to work with Belle Harbor residents and can be reached directly. Adelman also suggested that people take part in the NYPD’s Ideascale program, which is an online forum where people can post suggestions or tips to their local precinct anonymously. “The community talks, and we listen,” Adelman said, citing a recent drug arrest that was made based off a tip from the program. Also on hand was Harry Felder, the community liaison for the DDC’s Hurricane Sandy FEMA Funded Rehabilitation/Reconstruction project taking place between Beach 127th and 149th Streets. Felder gave some updates on the project that will consist of water main and hydrant replacement and road and sidewalk reconstruction, creating for beautified beach access points on the beach blocks of the area. Felder explained that work has started and is being done from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and the contractor is aiming to complete the project with minimal disruption to neighbors. There may be times when water will need to be cut off temporarily, but neighbors will be given 72 hours notice, and it will take place during off-peak hours. Driveway access may also be restricted at points, but the DDC will work with those who may be impacted. Felder is on hand to address any concerns as the project is ongoing and he can be reached directly at 718-474-4294 or sandw24ccl@gmail.com.

Maintaining Your Heating System By Artie Wallace
of water leaks or rust marks.
Although it is always best to have an annual service done on your heating system, there are a few things you can do between services that will help maintain your heating system. Hot air heating: Check the filter once every two months. Check that all air registers are clear for maximum airflow. If your unit has a humidifier built in, check to see that see that it is functioning. Do not service the interior controls of the heating unit; leave that for the annual service.
Check that the thermostat is working by turning it up (above the temperature in the space) and seeing that the heating system turns on, then turn the thermostat down below the temperature in the space and the heating system should go off. Depending on your system and thermostat there could have a delay of up to three minutes for the unit to go on and off. Should you find a problem, turn off your heat and call someone to service the unit. Most repairs will be minor if you check your system (as described above) and have it serviced at the first sign of trouble. Not checking your system can allow a minor problem to turn into a big one, making the repair a lot more expensive. Remember, there are controls, contacts, motors, etc. that could get expensive to replace if you do the wrong thing. So I do not advise the average homeowner to attempt repairs on their own.
Steam heat:
Check vents on all radiators to make sure they have no paint or dust buildup that may keep them from functioning properly. Visually check all pipes. If there is rust where a fitting meets a pipe, there is a chance that you have a steam leak.
Hot water heating:
Check all baseboards for signs of leaks. With the heat on, listen to the baseboards for a sound of water running or knocking, that is a sign that there is air in the line. Check around the boiler (check pipes and the floor beneath them) for signs

By Emil R. Lucev, Sr. & Daughter, Katie Lucev During the early 1900’s a plan was afoot to convert Jamaica Bay into a harbor for ocean going commercial cargo vessels! Today’s illustration gives a general idea of what was to be constructed in Jamaica Bay. Early work was done piecemeal
(a little at a time). It was never fully completed because city, state and federal authorities could never get on the same page as far as “capitalâ€? was concerned‌No Money, No Port !!! While using my newfound way of remote viewing (in certain government offices) I stumbled on a Great Master Plan to save New York
City from being inundated by rising ocean levels and great storms like “Sandyâ€?! A great landfill project is to start sometime in the near future to realize THIS project. Get out your map of New York City and environs and let’s envision the following‌ The East River is to be filled in between Throgsneck and Riker’s Island. A canal with locks will allow boat traffic from the Long Island Sound to the West side of Riker’s Island. Next, draw a line in the Atlantic Ocean from Point Lookout to the west end of Long Beach to Tottenville, which is the southern

tip of Staten Island. That entire area will be filled in up to the Verrazano Bridge, and Jamaica Bay will be reduced to a lake close to Brooklyn. A super canal with locks will allow shipping in and out of the Upper New York Bay or Harbor. The Hudson River will be reworked and widened from Bayonne to Perth Amboy in New Jersey. A great lock should then be constructed at the latter place! Super pumps and giant sluiceways will aid in the pumping of excess water at low ocean tides. As a result, the new beach area will be enjoyed by many!
Ulrich Sponsors Disaster Recovery Board Bill Councilman Eric Ulrich introduced legislation to create a Small Business Disaster Recovery and Resiliency Advisory Board. As the third anniversary of Hurricane Sandy approaching and many Rockaway businesses still recovering, Ulrich said that it is time to create a way for locals and residents citywide to become better prepared and equipped to deal with future natural disasters by interacting directly with city government and officials. “We need to make it as easy as possible for our small businesses to stay in business in the aftermath of a natural disaster, Ulrich

said. “This advisory board will help shine light on changes and better practices that are needed to ensure that small businesses are more resilient and better able to recover from future storms. Co-sponsored by Brooklyn representative Robert Cornegy, the bill would create an advisory board that study and make recommendations on potential legislation, regulation, policies, procedures and initiatives impacting small businesses. The bill also requires that the board hold public meetings at least five times annually (once in each borough).

Repossessed Cars To Be Sold Off Banks Forced To Cut Their Losses Brooklyn, NY – High repossession rates can be a crisis for many banks. When the bank repossess’ a vehicle they are forced to incur the cost of repossession of the vehicle and the cost of getting these vehicles to auction in order to sell them off. If the vehicle does not sell at the auction the bank has to return the vehicle to the storage lot and then attempt to sell at the next auction. Enormous transportation, storage and security expenses are incurred with this process. It has become harder for the banks to keep up with the repo rate due. Making it harder for the banks is the fact that dealers now have access to the tremendous amount of low mileage lease returns coming back every month. Additionally rental car companies now sell their rental car fleet directly to dealers. It is easier for a dealer to take a lease return or off rental vehicle and re-sell it rather than to deal with a repo and the title complications that can be associated with repo vehicles. This is what has created a crisis for the banks; too many repos, no one to buy them. The longer these cars sit, the bigger the losses are for the banks. “Well that is all about to change now” according to Richard Cappetta, General Manager at Kings County Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM.
and I think we can,” says Cappetta as he sits in his office at Kings County Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM on Flatbush Ave, “we will be selling repossessed, auction bought trade-in cars and even some rental fleet vehicles. This is a bargain hunter’s dream come true. You can come in and take on payments on over 100 late model used vehicles, at bargain basement prices. Vehicles can be sold for their outstanding balance to the banks. You can save up to 50% off of original MSRP^ prices. These savings are absolutely incredible. No haggling; each vehicle is clearly marked for quick sale, first come, first sold.” A Real Bargain “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for someone to come in and get a real bargain,” adds Richard Capetta. “Our staff has even told their families and friends to come down and we’ve notified some local churches and charities to come down as well to take advantage of these low prices. We want to make sure the local community benefits from this event. You’ll find all kinds of cars, trucks, vans and sport utilities from 6 months old to 6 years old.”
“We will also be offering CarFax History Reports on every vehicle. You can drive home with confidence. If I were in the “The auctions and banks have market for a quality pre-owned asked us to help by making certified vehicle, I would defithese vehicles available to us nitely come down early for the

Diary Of A Fat Man: No More Mr. Nice Guy "Y "RUCE "ERNFELD Last week I promised to tell you about some of the negative things I have discovered about dieting. I have been living my healthy lifestyle since the beginning of June and I have experienced one major negative that I am trying to learn to overcome. And....I don’t have to tell you!! Find out for yourselves you fools! What do I have to do spoon-feed you everything? DAMN!! Okay you guessed it. I get ANGRY and lose my temper more often! Not a good situation, especially for a guy who has lost 55 pounds and is getting svelte. Who cares if a fat man loses his temper? They are either jolly or angry but we don’t pay them much mind. We only use fat people as comparison, like “I am not as fat as him... so I can have that piece of pie,” or “Thank God I don’t look like her.” But...losing ones temper has major drawbacks...just ask my wife Eileen how it’s been to live with me lately. It’s not good. There are even names to describe my condition. Titles like HANGRY or DIET RAGE! I’m not the only one who gets
“hangry” (so hungry that you’re angry). According to a recent study published in the Journal of Consumer Research, people who ate an apple instead of chocolate for dietary reasons were more likely to choose violent movies over milder ones and were more irritated by a friend or spouse urging them to exercise. But wait. Shouldn’t eating healthfully and exercising make you happy? “It should,” says Elizabeth Somer, RD, author of Eat Your Way to Happiness. “But not when you go to extremes or cut out the wrong foods.” Oops. So why is this happening and what’s the secret to smiling while dieting? “Changes in brain chemistry that can affect your mood occur when you restrict calories,” says Gary L. Wenk, PhD, professor in the departments of psychology and neuroscience at Ohio State University. A recent study in biological psychiatry noted that when you’re hungry, levels of the brain chemical serotonin — a neurotransmitter that regulates mood as well as appetite and sleep — fluctuate and make it difficult to control your anger. According to research, a defi-
ciency in omega-3 fatty acids — alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), found in plant sources like flaxseeds, soybeans, and walnuts, but not almonds; docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), both found in fish and algae — is associated with depression, anger, and hostility. Getting adequate amounts of omega-3s can actually improve brainpower and mood. Nutritionists and doctors recommend at least two six-ounce servings of fatty fish per week. They also suggest rotating in other good sources of omega-3s, like shrimp, cod, and mussels, or, alternatively, grass-fed meats or pasture-raised eggs. I have been using a teaspoon of cod liver oil and hemp seeds (thanks again to Lola Starr). Or you could just pop a supplement. Studies suggest that getting about 1,000 milligrams of combined DHA and EPA daily can help improve mood. But wait...an apple instead of chocolate? C’mon give us a break! Well, here’s some good news: Recent research has found that consuming 20 grams of dark chocolate twice a day( the size of a Hershey bar) for two weeks re-
sulted in reductions in metabolic signs of stress, including levels of cortisol. Dark chocolate is quite good for the brain. It is full of compounds that boost mood and concentration. A regular Hershey bar is 1.55 ounces and contains 210 calories, 13 grams of fat and 24 grams of sugar as well as very small amounts of dietary fiber and iron. So I would stay away from them. But you can find some really good dark chocolate bars out there with as low as five grams of sugar. So...if you are on a diet and have been a pain in the butt like I have been these past few weeks, try some shrimp and chocolate. Not a bad plan, huh?

AHOY ROCKAWAY! Next Super Moon: Sunday, October 27, 2015- Expect tides to be “higher” and “lower” than normal. Water Temperature: 62*F- Entrance to NY Harbor (open sea) 15 NM S/W of Breezy Point. Hello Rockaway Anglers (and Rockaway non-anglers)! That cold snap that we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived. The past fall weekend was sunny and crisp weatherwise, the problem was the wind, we had plenty of it, and it made getting to the fish almost impossible. The water temperature has dropped (yet again) -4 degrees from last week. There certainly is a mixed bag of fish out there now. We have big blues hanging around the inlet and the local bridges. The blues are chasing the large bunker schools way up into the back bays and creeks with periodic blitzes. There are also some bass running underneath of the blue fish. Striped bass are hard to catch because they are smart. The striped bass like to hang out underneath the blue fish while the blue fish are feeding on the bunker. Blue fish have a dining etiquette much the same as “Piranha” with chunks of bunker getting ripped apart and falling down to the bottom. Striped bass are smart and conserve their energy. They don’t have to work very hard to eat the bite-sized chunks of bunker falling past them. The striped bass have to stay up with the fast moving and blitzing blue fish (which they can easily do) that are tearing through the bunker schools eating like it was their last meal (which in the marine world, it very well could be). We have black fish all around the local bay area and rock piles off of the beach. This year it’s difficult for local bait suppliers to get any fiddler or Green crabs, so many anglers are using clams to try and nail the “Tog” (black fish). Some of the fish are on the smaller side (must be at least 16”), but larger fish are mixed in with them. The slight advantage to using clams while fishing the
jetties is that hungry striped bass might strike on the clam near the surf zone (because that’s what the striped bass are feeding on at the moment). There have been reports of striped bass striking on clams in the surf off the beach near Breezy Point. We checked in with our local stations, and here’s what they had to report. Big Ron’s Fishing Station, Howard Beach: We spoke with Dawn from Big Ron’s and she tells us that the black fish action is good in the bay and near the jetties. The black fish are on the smaller size, but there are plenty of them to catch and throw back. Porgy action is just about non-existent. The big news is that the green crabs are now available at the shop. Fiddlers are not available, as nobody will ship them. Tom’s Wave Service Station/ Bait & Tackle, Rockaway Park: We called and spoke with Tom and he tells us that the black fish are all over the sea wall. The fish are on the smaller side, and it’s tough to find one over the legal limit of 16”. The Porgies are just about all gone from the area. We do have confirmed striped bass being caught on the beach from Seaside through Breezy Point. The striped bass are dining on clams and are right in the surf zone where the waves break. There were no reports of any blue fish in the surf. Tom’s shop has green crabs available. Well, that’s it anglers, until next week, enjoy the Fall run! Football Coach Seeks To Build Memorial For Justin Zemser An online campaign has started to secure funding in order to build a memorial for Justin Zemser, the Rockaway native who died in May in the Amtrak derailment in Philadelphia. Coach Victor Nazario, Jr. at Beach Channel/ Channel View High School set up a GoFundMe site seeking to honor Zemser, who wore jersey #8 while playing football at the
school. Zemser went on to join the U.S. Naval Academy where he played sprint football before his tragic passing. “The Dolphins Football Family wants to honor him with a memorial that will be placed on the Athletic Field,” the site says. So far, they have raised $1,720 out of their goal of $3,700. To donate, go to https://www.gofundme.com/m5m9hrnv.

On Saturday, October 17, 75 Rockawayites trekked up to West Point for their 5th Annual Father/ Son Army tailgate. This year they were treated to a special visit from assistant coach Orlando Mitjans. Coach Mitjans grew up in Far Rockaway and was part of a three-year undefeated championship team at Beach Channel High school. He then went on to be starting safety at Arkansas un-
der Lou Holtz and played in the Orange, Sugar and Cotton Bowl! The Group departed from Jamesons and enjoyed watching Army defeat Bucknell 21-14…. and just like Army…the fathers came from behind and beat the sons, 5 touchdowns to 4 to remain undefeated against the young lads. Special Thanks to John Martin and Mike Egan for transportation and great food.
