A BROKEN CLOCK WILL BE RIGHT

The Wise Clock near Bay 5 at Riis Park will undergo a major overhaul. It’s done a pretty good job standing through hurricanes and other weather assaults (okay, okay, the time was usually only right twice a day). The clock, featured in a famous Cracker Jack commercial, was installed at Riis in 1941. According to the National Parks Service, the history of the

clock has some mystery. The official story is that the clock was made in the 1890s by the Wise Jewelry Store in Brooklyn, although some sources claim that the clock was manufactured by the Howard Clock Company of Boston. The clock stood in front of the Wise Jewelry Store at Flatbush Avenue and Nevins Street for a number of years. It was then moved with the firm to a new location at Fulton Street near Hoyt, where it remained for nine years. From there it was moved to 288 Livingston for about five years before being removed to the park. The clock was donated to the Department of Parks by William A. Wise and Son in 1941 when the firm went out of business. We’re told the clock will be back, fully restored and functioning by April. But only time will tell. (Photo by Richard O’Neill)

This is Halloween Around the Rock By Katie McFadden

Six years ago, the scariest thing around Halloween was Hurricane Sandy, which ultimately canceled the holiday for Rockaway. But this weekend, Halloween is ON, so don’t let the rain scare you. There’s plenty to do around town for kids to adults this weekend. Trick-or-treating doesn’t take place until Wednesday, October 31, but there’s lots to do for families and kids this weekend. Last year’s haunted house at the 100th Precinct was a huge hit, but with such success, it turned into a free ticketed event this year, which sold out early. Sorry, kids. However, even if you can’t get into the Haunted Stationhouse on Friday, October 26, there will still be giveaways, candy, Halloween tips, face-painting and more taking place outside from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. Also on Friday afternoon, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Arverne Library on Beach 54th Street is hosting a spooky celebration for kids ages 5-12. There will be scary stories, creepy crafts, treats and games. Costumes are optional. During the day on Saturday, October 27, House on the Rock Church is hosting a fall festival complete with a chili cookoff, games, snacks, music, face-painting, crafts and more from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. on the Beach 94th Boardwalk, or indoors at 91-08 Rockaway Beach Blvd. in the event of rain. The Peninsula Library on Beach 94th Street is also hosting a Halloween party, open to kids ages 4-7, and their parents. There will be storytime, fun activities, and a Halloween Parade, so costumes are encouraged. Call the library at 718-634-1110 to re-

On Saturday night, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m., the Rockaway Youth Task Force is hosting a haunted farm trail on their farm at Beach 58th Street and Beach Channel Drive. “Halloween is coming soon, so grab your mask or your broom. The Rockaway Youth Task Force will be your host, come dressed as yourself, a witch or a ghost! There will be food, candy and witch’s brew, now all we need is you,” the event page says. If you want to head over the bridge to Brooklyn, Aviator Sports Center (3159 Flatbush Avenue) has been transformed into Green Meadows Farm, where there’s pumpkin picking, a petting zoo, hayride, a haunted house, pony rides, slides and more. It is open from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $9.

On the other side of the bridge in Broad Channel, on Sunday, October 28 is the Dawn Mcintyre Annual Children’s Halloween Parade. Costumed kids are encouraged to start lining up at 17th Road Park at 11:45 a.m., for the parade that kicks off at noon and heads to the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department firehouse, where there will be drinks and goodie served. For adult kids (those 21+) looking for some fun, local bars and restaurants have plenty in store. The fun begins Friday night at Thai Rock, where new band, Playland makes their debut at 9 p.m.

Party features drink specials, a costume contest, prizes and music by DJ Gavin. In Breezy Point, the Sugar Bowl is hosting their party starting at 8 p.m. on Saturday night. Breezy residents and their guests can swing by for DJ music and a costume contest with prizes. For those in Broad Channel, the Broad Channel American Legion’s Halloween Party is always a good time. The $25 admission gets you access to music by DJ’s at Work, a costume contest with cash prizes, 50/50s, a cash bar and more. Tickets and tables of eight should be reserved in advance by

Also on Friday night is the Breezy Point BayHouse’s Halloween party featuring music by the Mardi Gras Band. The fun starts at 9 p.m. and costumes are encouraged. Saturday is where the big parties are at. The Rockaway Brewing Company and the Rockaway Beach Broadcasting Company are hosting Boo at the Brew on Saturday, October 27, starting at 8 p.m. at the Brewery (415 Beach 72nd Street). There will be performances by Vic Thrill, Freya Wilcox and The Supertones, plus a costume contest with prizes and more. Healy’s Pub’s party is also Saturday night, starting around 8 p.m. There will be DJ music, drink specials and a costume contest. Community House’s (101-19 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) party is for the latenight crew, starting at 10 p.m. Their Boos and Booze Halloween

On Saturday, October 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., bring your costumed pet down to the Rockaway Dog Park at Beach 83rd Street and Rockaway Freeway for the Canine Costume Carnival Fundraiser. There will be music, games, trick-or-treat bags, raffles and a costume parade led by Rocky. There is also a costume contest for pets, but you don’t need to be present to win. Submissions are also being accepted online, for a small donation of $1 online or $2 on the day of the event. The contest will begin at noon. I Candy With Halloween coming up, someone asked me what my favorite candy was. Easy. Whatever I would steal from my brother’s Halloween bag. Or a couple decades later, whatever I swiped from kids. You know you could go out and buy any candy you want, but if you want full guilty enjoyment, you’ve got to pilfer the Snickers or Nestle Crunch from somebody else’s loot. They could keep the Mary Jane bar. Ugh. I mean, Mary Janes had their fans. Don’t ask me why. The candy was like a little brick and part of the candy wrapper always stuck to the bar. You’d have to spend a lot of time peeling the paper or, more likely, you’d have to suck on it and then peel the paper rem-

nants off your tongue. Nice. Tootsie Rolls sometimes came with this challenge, too. But Tootise Rolls? C’mon, they were in the Top 10. If one had part of the wrapper stuck to it, big deal, it was still worth it. Tootsie Rolls were one of those candies you knew you’d be sacrificing a filling for. Of course, they were nothing compared to Milk Duds. Those babies would loosen every tooth. Sometimes your temples would ache from all the chewing work you had to do. Milk Duds were good, but you couldn’t get full enjoyment because an image of your dentist would pop into your head as you chewed. Sugar Daddies were hard caramel candy bars on a stick. You put the candy in your mouth and pulled on the stick until a piece broke off that you could chew on. You were always in danger of spraining your jaw or rattling your teeth if the candy

slipped out. And they were too much work. That was the thing with some candies. Some were complicated. You’d get a Pez candy dispenser and the spring would break and you could never get the candy out. Or some Pez dispensers were like mousetraps, you’d almost lose your finger working the thing. I don’t know why we bothered, Pez candy was lame. Same with Dots candy. Dots came on a long sheet that looked like a cash register receipt and weren’t worth the trouble. You’d have to scrape them off with your teeth. The paper was kind of waxy and the candy was the size of aspirin. I think this was more for show. You had candy and no one else did or had already finished what they had. The wax paper reminds me of wax teeth that were big on Halloween. Allegedly, you could eat them. Gross. I’d

rather be honest and just eat a candle. I’d take red licorice laces over black any day of the week. You’d chew a black lace with that face that asked, do I like this or not? Or you might not go for black licorice laces at all but you liked Good N’ Plenty, which was filled with the black stuff. Good N’ Plenty came with the bonus of shaking the box for a Choo-Choo Charlie rhythm. I think some old grouches had a plan to keep trick-ortreat traffic at a minimum. Why else give out popcorn balls? I never met anyone who liked popcorn balls. And nobody liked apples with pennies jammed into them. The apples would always compel somebody to say, “Watch out, sometimes they put razor blades in them.” And here’s another warning, kids. Keep an eye on your trick-or-treat bag. I’m looking for a Charleston Chew.

***** Well, you’re reading The Rockaway Times. Know what that means? The RT Team did not win Mega Millions or Powerball. We would’ve flown the coop and never published (after donating to our favorite Rockaway charities, of course, and secretly buying the Neponsit Home). We knew the odds. We knew throwing the money in the bay was probably money better spent, but we bought some tickets anyway. And hey, we wanted to show solidarity with the rest of you nuts who caught the $1.6 Billion fever. ***** Monday marks six years since that storm. You know the one we’re talking about. Some people are STILL not back home. The Harbor Light is STILL not open (but will be soon!) Our beaches STILL remain with-

out adequate protection as they erode more and more. We hope one day that Hurricane Sandy will be more like a memory than something that’s still noticed around town. ***** Water or no water? The Reconstruction of Beach Channel spearheaded by the Department of Design and Construction has been a nightmare for local businesses. Beach 116th was essentially closed early in the week and businesses along Beach Channel Drive were notified that there’d be no water on Monday. But then there was water. Then word came there’d be a water interruption of eight hours on Tuesday. On Tuesday, the water flowed. (It’s tough to sell coffee without water. It’s tough for dentists to work on patients without water. It’s tough to plan a work day without working toilets). More than a little puzzled, we called DDC and were told all good, there’ll be no shutdown. ***** The iconic clock at Riis Park is being removed for a

complete rehab. We have to admit that we didn’t know it by its name, The Wise Clock, named after jewelers from Brooklyn. We just know it was the star in a Cracker Jack commercial. ***** The Bugalou Music Series kicks off Year 2 this Saturday at St. Camillus. Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams will headline this Saturday’s show, which will be made extra inviting because The Kerry Kearney Band will play as well. Go to BugalouMusic.com for more info. Born in 1922, Muriel spent most of her life in Broad Channel. We got to know Muriel through the postal service. Page 7 various papers and magazines that were somehow pertinent to today’s Rockaway and Broad Channel. The correspondence was often just a little wacky, stamped with Muriel’s sense of humor. ***** According to the New York Law Journal, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit reversed a district court’s order that had found in favor of an insurance company that denied Madelaine Chocolate its Hurricane Sandy claim. Madelaine filed claims for more than $40 million but Great Northern, a Chubb division, only paid $4 million. The chocolate company sued for the balance, lost in court, then won on appeal by a unanimous three-judge appeals panel on Tuesday. How sweet it is. New Business and No More

There’s a lot going on around town as far as business is concerned. Some good, and some not so good. Some new places have opened, some are still are on the way, and some, sadly, are closing soon. Let’s get the bad news out of the way. By the end of the month, Beach 116th might seem a little more empty. Gift shop, Blue Bungalow, is making a transition to online sales only and their storefront will officially be closed by the end

Mallary Bennett Coletta says, “We are in the final stages and should be open soon!” In some more good news, in Rockaway Beach, party rental company, LuLu’s Fun Face Painting and Party Rentals NY, got a storefront on 90-15 Rockaway Beach Blvd. In addition to bringing the party to others through rentals, the business now has its own party room for people to come to. A grand opening party was held at the space last weekend. A lot of action is taking place of October. Don’t miss out on in Arverne by the Sea. With last-minute sales. The Dunkin the recent development of Donuts on Beach 116th Street is also closing up shop, but the one on Beach Channel Drive will remain. Food stop, Paninico, is also at threat of closure due to higher rent costs, but owner, Mike Adil, says he’s looking for a new location. However Beach 116th Street will have a pick-me-up soon when the Rockaway Farmer’s Market at the old Sleepy’s location opens soon. Owner

The Tides apartment complex, comes lots of new business. New wine and liquor store, Vino by the Sea, should be open any day now. Cuisine by Claudette of Beach 116th will be opening a second location at The Tides. Locals Surf School will also be getting a storefront at this location. Plus, there’s still room for more. Some good stuff is also coming across the street. Some may have seen signage go up where Checkers used to be. Batesy's Bar & BBQ will be coming here and its brought to you by the same folks that own Pico’s on Beach 129th Street, so it’s bound to be good! Still in the rumor stages, but some pretty solid ones at that—a new Brennan & Carrtype place (think roast beef sandwiches) may be coming to Beach 129th Street, and a new brewery/beer garden may be headed to a Rockaway Park location along Beach Channel Drive. Here’s to hoping these become a reality!

COMMUNITY JOINS ADDABBO TO HELP HURRICANE FLORENCE VICTIMS On Wednesday, October 17, UPS picked up 11 boxes of supplies collected by State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr.’s three district offices (including in Rockaway), which were shipped out to North Carolina to help NC State Senator Bill Rabon and his constituents recover from Hurricane Florence. The drive began on September 20 and ended October 4. Supplies collected included, toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, soaps and shampoos, and other products, as well as Visa and MasterCard gift cards. According to state Senator Joe Addabbo, Senator Bill Rabon, who serves in the 8th Senatorial District of North Carolina, found that his entire district — which includes Brunswick, Bladen, New Hanover and Pender counties — was severely impacted by

Hurricane Florence, with many places under water. Rabon’s house and veterinarian office were also destroyed in the storm. “Our local communities really came through to help out those in need after Hurricane Florence ravaged parts of North Carolina,” Addabbo said. “It was inspiring to see so many of my constituents drop off supplies. It was great that we were able to pay forward the help that we received from all over after we were hit by Superstorm Sandy. I truly want to thank everyone who donated.”

ROCKAWAY AMONG QUEENS NEIGHBORHOODS WITH HIGHEST OVERDOSES Rockaway is among the Queens neighborhoods with the highest drug overdose deaths. A new study released by the NYC Health Department showed that in 2017, Rockaway was among Ridgewood and Fresh Meadows as communities with the highest overdose deaths. This was part of a larger citywide study that showed the Hunts Point-Mott Haven section of the Bronx being highest in the city. Now the NYCDOH is trying to do what it can to combat this epidemic. According to the Health Department, last year, 270 residents of Queens died from drug overdose. Rates of overdose death were highest among Queens residents ages 35 to 54, as well as among White residents of the borough. Fentanyl was the most common drug, involved in 54 percent of overdose deaths in Queens. The three Queens neighborhoods with the highest rates of overdose death in 2017 were:

On Monday, October 23, the NYCDOH announced a new initiative to educate primary care providers about naloxone – the medication to reverse an opioid overdose. Health Department representatives will visit at least 800 primary care clinicians from October to December to encourage them to offer naloxone to patients at risk of an opioid overdose and those who have at-risk friends or family members. Among the targeted neighborhoods for this program is Rockaway, as the neighborhood has seen elevated rates of overdose death. “The opioid epidemic continues to be a major issue for communities across New York City and while we work to identify and address the systemic factors that contribute to more cases of abuse, it is critical that we as a city step up to save every life we can,” Councilman Donovan Richards said.

RWA Plants for Sandy Anniversary ate a strong enough dune that water is blocked before it can reach residential areas. Many areas that had strong dunes in 2012 were spared from the worst of Sandy’s effects, but many of these dunes have been compromised and need to be replenished. The RWA and volunteers have spent several years doing their part to help makes these dunes stronger with annual plantings around the anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. Many came out on Saturday

CVSR 6th Graders Clean Up

Every year the 6th grade at Channel View School for Research participates in the New York State Beach Clean-up sponsored by the American Littoral Society. Students comb the beaches between Beach 96th to 106th Street, picking up litter and recording data on what they find. Their science case study cumulates in students engineering solutions to prevent litter from

making it to our beloved local beaches. Top trash items found this year were plastic pieces and last year it was cigarette butts. Ms. Vallejoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 11th and 12th grade mentors helped out with chaperoning the clean-up groups. Community Service is a big part of CVSRâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s philosophy to prepare students to become well rounded and productive members of society.

De Blasio Announces Unlimited Paid Sick Leave For 9/11 Responders On Wednesday, October 23, Mayor Bill de Blasio, and union leaders from District Council 37, Local 3621 and Local 2507 announced that the city will provide unlimited 9/11 sick leave to city workers who participated in the World Trade Centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (WTC) rescue, recovery and cleanup operations, and those who contracted a 9/11-related illness. Unlimited 9/11 Sick Leave will be provided to employees in a range of titles across several city agencies, including employees of the unionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s various divisions such as emergency medical technicians (EMTs), peace officers, laborers, engineers, and others. This sick leave is retroactive to September 11, 2001, and leave taken since then, that has been verified to cope with a certified 9/11-related illness, will be restored. It is estimated that approximately 2,000 active employees

will be covered by this agreement, which will form the basis for additional agreements with unions representing other eligible employees. Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, who supported this effort said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thanks to the efforts of these brave individuals, the city has finally announced that they will provide unlimited sick leave to those who selflessly risked their lives in the rescue, recovery and cleanup operations during 9/11.â&#x20AC;? As part of the agreement, and following the process in which 9/11 medical determinations are made, firefighters and EMTs must obtain a diagnosis confirming that they have a 9/11-related illness from a doctor in the FDNY Bureau of Health Services. Other city employees will be able to obtain a diagnosis from medical doctors in the WTCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Health Programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Centers of Excellence.

partment of Health) Stanley Nathanson, a parishioner at my Temple, was admitted a week ago to Beacon Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, located at 140 Beach 113th Street, Rockaway Park, New York, 11694. He suffers from partial dementia. When I went to see Stanley yesterday, I found his room, the last at the end on the second floor, Room 207, the adjacent room and opposite rooms empty, and appeared to be used for storage. His room itself was under construction and a painter stood next to a cart filled with paints, brushes, painting tools and carpentry equipment. Stanley's bed was pushed up against and facing the wall, while another laborer was putting in paneling on the back wall next to the bathroom. Stanley had neither water nor a pitcher for the same. Stanley had no bedclothes and was only partially covered with a sheet. He was in

The Rockaway Times a fetal position and it was obvious from his body odor that he had not been bathed since before he arrived more than a week earlier. Since I saw him last, prior to his admission, he lost a significant amount of weight. I asked him if he was thirsty and he drank four cups all at once. There was no administrator on duty and the receptionist called for the third-floor charge nurse, who identified himself as "Larry." I brought Larry into the room and pointed out Stanley's condition. Larry told the construction workers they should not be working in the room with the patient in it. This was disputed by the workers who were "following directions." I showed Larry the patient’s unwashed, unkempt condition, the tray table caked with dirt, not even a pitcher or cup for water anywhere in the room and wood dust from the paneling being installed everywhere. As I was walking out with Larry, a nurse came in with several medications for Stanley. Basic amenities, TV, phone, tissues, and water were absent in this room where Stanley was being warehoused. Irene Brunstein Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Up Doc? Dear Editor: Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m writing in response to Dr. Galvinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s piece in the October 18 issue, entitled â&#x20AC;&#x153;Drugs and Dangers.â&#x20AC;? In it, he highlights the dangers of substance abuse and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s overwhelming prevalence in society, especially among teenagers and young adults. This is an issue that many Rockaway residents are all too familiar with, and I commend Dr. Galvin for address-

ing it. My problem, however, is not with the content of the article, but with what it lacks: heroin. Dr. Galvin chose to go into detail about five specific drugs: cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA, synthetic marijuana and bath salts. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m very curious as to why he chose to ignore opiates. Opioid addiction is currently an epidemic in our society, and in Rockaway, especially. Perhaps it was a gross oversight on Dr. Galvinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s part. Or perhaps it has something to do with the fact that heroin abuse is usually a result of opioid pain killer dependency, and that the real problem lies with doctors overprescribing these highly addictive drugs. You see, when someone is prescribed an opiate painkiller (Percocet, oxycodone, morphene, etc.), they can easily become physically addicted. Their refills eventually run out, but their addiction remains. Prescription painkillers are very expensive on the street,

and heroin is a much cheaper alternative that works just as effectively to quell the withdrawals. And so the cycle continues. Opioid addiction is one of the biggest problems plaguing our society. It kills young men and women every single day all over the county, and, unfortunately, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happening right in our own backyards. I feel that it was morally and socially irresponsible of Dr. Galvin, a medical professional, to omit heroin and other opiates from his article. The next time he wants to write a piece thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meant to educate our community about drug addiction, I urge him to address the most harrowing crisis at hand: the heroin epidemic. As I am constrained by space (the editor asks us to limit our columns to 450 words or less), it is impossible for me to discuss every illicit drug in one column. Because I had previously wrote about opiates, I wrote that column about non-opiates, as the journal article it is based on did. My columns are meant to be a service to the community. Cornell’s Watercolors Make a Splash at RAA

Recreating a moment in time is no easy task, but local artist Arlene Cornell has that special gift of giving life to all her paintings through her use of watercolors. This weekend and next, Rockaway will have the opportunity to see the talented works of Cornell on display at the Rockaway Artists Alliance’s sTudio 6 in Fort Tilden, as part of her latest solo show, “Places Near and Far.” From scenes that some will find familiar, as they reflect the local area, to others inspired by other places along the east coast and beyond, there will be something for everyone’s eye to behold at Cornell’s fourth solo show at the

RAA. Last year, Cornell, a longtime RAA member, held a solo show in May, that was well received, so she was invited to display her work once again, and it’s no wonder why. Cornell’s works have been in many group and solo shows in galleries both local and international, and her works are in numerous collections throughout the world. ward Hopper, also influenced her. Their ability to paint common every day scenes and communicate a sense of emotion and mood captured her imagination. Cornell is looking forward to seeing her friends and fellow art enthusiasts for the next two weekends in Fort Tilden. Nancy Edwards Kalisak August 19, 1952 - October 20, 2018

Nancy Edwards Kalisak passed away on October 20, 2018 at age 66. Born August 19, 1952 to Patricia Edwards and George Edwards, Nancy spent her childhood growing up in Chelsea in Manhattan. She attended St. Columba Catholic School, St. Jean Baptiste High School and Bronx Community College. She spent many years working for the Trucker’s Union. Nancy resided in Greenpoint, Brookyln, and New Jersey, and eventually moved to Rockaway, where she had spent many summers during her childhood. In 1972, Nancy married her husband, Edward Kalisak. They met on the boardwalk in Rockaway and were inseparable ever after. Together, they had three sons, Christopher, James and Robert. In recent years, Nancy battled many health issues, but she was happy with her husband by her side. Nancy is survived by her husband, her sons, and three grandchildren, Matthew, Peyton and Logan; her sister, Patty McFadden and her husband, Daniel; sister-in-law, Lorraine Sweeney; and many nieces and nephews, including Shannon, John, Katelyn and Patrick McFadden, Michael Kalisak and his wife, Jennifer, and their children, Kelly and Jackie Kalisak. She will be greatly missed. A memorial Mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at St. Francis de Sales Church.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is called â&#x20AC;&#x153;spectrumâ&#x20AC;? because of the great variability in the severity of symptoms. ASD is a condition related to brain development that impacts how a person interacts and socializes with others. Asperger syndrome, which is part of ASD, usually causes mild symptoms, while those with more severe ASD may be withdrawn and non-communicative. ASD typically begins in early childhood and eventually causes problems functioning in society, including school and work. Some children appear to develop normally for the first year and then begin a period of regression between 18 and 24 months of age. There is no cure for ASD, however, early intensive treatment can make a big difference in the lives of many children. ASD symptoms are usually seen by two years of age but

Autism Spectrum Disorder may be seen as early as infancy. Early symptoms may be lack of eye contact, failure to respond to his or her name, or indifference to the caregiver. Children with ASD often have difficulty learning. Some may have low intelligence, while others may have high intelligence and may learn quickly, but yet have trouble communicating and applying what they know to everyday life and social situations. Repetitive movements are common and may include rocking, spinning, clapping, or head banging. Failure to meet expected stages of development should prompt a visit to the pediatrician. These include failure to smile by six months, failure to mimic sounds or facial expressions by nine months, failure to babble or coo by 12 months, failure to point or wave by 14 months, failure to say single words

by 16 months, failure to play â&#x20AC;&#x153;make-believeâ&#x20AC;? by 18 months, failure to say two-word phrases by 24 months, or a loss of language or social skills at any age. The causes of ASD are not well known. Genetic factors are thought to play a role, as are environmental factors like maternal viral infections, medications or complications during pregnancy, or other factors like air pollution. There are also maternal risk factors. These include smoking during pregnancy (includes exposure to secondhand smoke) and maternal obesity. A recent study was published that found some interesting results. It has been known for a while that pre-existing maternal Type II diabetes was a risk factor for ASD. Likewise, gestational diabetes before 26 weeks of gestation (gestation begins at conception). The study found

strong evidence that maternal Type I diabetes that was either pre-existing or diagnosed before 26 weeks of gestation was also a significant risk factor for ASD in the child. Other risk factors include the childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sex (boys are four times more likely to develop ASD than girls), a family history of ASD, certain genetic syndromes in the child, extremely preterm infants (born before 26 weeks of gestation), and the parents ages (early research points to older parents being a risk factor). EXACTLY WHO YOU ARE This was inspired by someone who recently told me that she turned a corner and realized that she wants to accept herself the way she is. We were talking about eating habits and body type, and how much genetics plays a part. A big part! There is no way that I am ever getting myself tall and lean. Just like in the same way, the tall, svelte woman will never have curves—which is sometimes a trend and sometimes not. This is not only the

case for women; it also applies to men. What is in vogue? Who cares? It is OK to be exactly who you are. At some point, it is good to realize that your body type is your body type and your mind is your mind. Accept. Accept. Accept. Once we accept, we can relax. Once we relax, we can think about being healthy in body and healthy in mind. Whatever form that takes. Being healthy is so, so much more long lasting. And being

healthy requires a lot of thinking, preparing, choosing. Especially nowadays when there is so much in unhealthy foods at everyone’s fingertips and stress triggers in many parts of our lives. Recalling my Dad, who reminded me that moderation is key to living a good life. Not too much of anything leads to balance and health. There is more to think about now because of how everything in our world is processed and so far away from its origin. If we apply the same principle, though, we can be happy and healthy. Just being thoughtful about choices we make and being moderate, not excessive, in everything we do. Looking in the mirror and accepting the form in front of you and accepting the everyday thoughts are the first steps in achieving balance and wellness. Not to say you don’t want to change your body—maybe, maybe not—but by accepting, you open a door to do it. No resistance. No hoping for something that will never be. Just be and go from there.

We have thought patterns, habits, such complicated ways of justifying things to ourselves, and making up stories from perceptions, etc. Accept. Accept. Accept. Once we accept our minds, we can relax. Once we relax, we can think about changing the mindset to let go of all that is behind and focus on the positive future of living. It is a choice. Then a decision. Like a key turning in a lock. Like a click. The battle can be over. It is what it is. We are who we are. It could be brilliant to be exactly who you are at every moment in time and to take the time to make the choices that are synchronized to our bodies and our minds. Relax. Be. Acknowledge “The Who” you are, accept and then go from there. It is OK to be exactly who you are. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

She’s Leaving Home

This classic Beatles tune tells the poignant story of a girl leaving her parents' home and striking out on her own. The chorus has a call and response feature with the refrain, “She’s leaving home.” There are many interpretations to this particular song, but I like the simplest, that a young person has reached the age when it’s time to leave the nest. And so it was, that the mermaid and I helped the littlest mermaid out of the bay and into her own cove last week. Arranging for movers, furniture and bedding deliveries, and dealing with building supers, and it all finally happened. And at the end of the day, we stared at each other and realized she was in her

own place. Like many our age, we’re truly empty nesters, and wondering what next? Just as many of our neighbors, we had done our job and given the little one wings. Our roles had changed dramatically from the days we were changing diapers and losing sleep. And now we were firmly in a different phase of life. Of course, we didn’t feel old, we just felt different. And as we talked with others our age, it seems the story is somewhat the same. Last week’s Rockapulco Gold Music Festival was a great success in my opinion. Not because the labels barely stayed on the cans, but because it drew a large crowd to the new “event space” (read – parking lot!) on Beach Channel Drive. The food was delicious, and I am told healthy (the beer must have been strong for me to eat healthy!); the views were spectacular, and some say even better than the Wharf

(don’t tell the Wharf!). But it was the conversations that I found so extremely interesting. More than once I had discussions with friends about retiring, selling their houses, being a snowbird or just plain wondering what the hell do they do now at this stage in life. What should they do? Volunteer? Learn guitar? Walk NYC? They asked how I transitioned, and I told each and every one that I don’t know, I just did. That it seems like every day is filled up with fun and interesting things to do. I think the trick is really to try to stay healthy for as long as you can. Back to the song. "She is Leaving Home," the refrain changes to “She is Having Fun” with the response being that Fun is the one thing that money can’t buy. And so it is with all those little guppies of ours having fun, that so should we. Those of you who retired or are about to retire

and have done your job raising families; taking care of our parents; paying all those damn bills; should now just have some fun and do the things that you always wanted to. Like creating a Rockaway beer, holding a festival, or just walking around Manhattan. One thing we should not be, is like the couple in the Beatles song, wondering what did we do wrong. On the contrary, let me tell you now – you did all the right things, and everything is as it should be. The kids are growing up, the world will be better because of them, and we now have an opportunity to enjoy the sweetest of times – what was once referred to as the Golden Years, with the promise that they actually will be Gold, as in Rockapulco Gold baby. And if you heard the theme song at the festival, it sums it all up. “If you drink that beer boy, you’ll never grow old, you’ll never grow old!!”

Worth Every Penny

What exactly is a "penny social" you ask? For those of you unfamiliar, hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a little primer to get you ready. Penny Socials are special fundraising events dating back in origin to European countries where tickets were sold for a penny each. Hence, the name penny social or penny sale. It combines the elements of both an auction and a raffle. The com-

mon factor is that the bidding is done with a ticket. Each participant buys a certain number of tickets for a set price. They then use those tickets to â&#x20AC;&#x153;bidâ&#x20AC;? on a variety of donated items on â&#x20AC;&#x153;auction.â&#x20AC;? They can bid as many tickets as they wish on each item they are interested in by depositing the tickets in a container assigned to that item. The items are displayed on tables or shelves and bidders walk around and browse the wares, bidding on favored items as they go. It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take long to figure out, of course, that the more tickets you bid on a â&#x20AC;&#x153;must haveâ&#x20AC;? item, the better your chances are of winning. Rather than going to the highest bidder, though, as it would at a regular auction, the item goes to the person whose ticket is drawn at random, from the container. As an aside, when I was growing up, these type of fundraisers were often referred to as "Chinese Auctions," but as our

culture became more socially aware, aka politically correct, those whose lives are dedicated to finding offense in all that surrounds them deemed that since there is nothing culturally "Chinese" in raffling off donated prizes, perhaps "penny social" would suffice as a less offensive description of the event. In any event, sound like a fun way to spend an evening? If so, pay close attention to the following. The Broad Channel VFW will be hosting our town's very own annual "Penny Social" at the American Legion, 209 Cross Bay Boulevard, on Saturday, November 3. Doors will open at 6 p.m., accompanied by a $10 admission, with raffle calling starting at 7 p.m. Of course, there will be "early bird specials," a door prize, and 50/50s. By the way, and keep in mind that you'll only read about this here, I have it from a solid source that a

rather generous donor has also offered a pristine 2017 Ford Mustang Eco Boost Premium Convertible ES as a raffle prize for this event, so you might want to arrive early. Oh, before I forget, due diligence requires that I mention the term "die cast metal collectible" when referring to the Mustang Convertible. As always, all proceeds from this fundraiser will go to fund Thanksgiving Dinner for the Disabled Veterans of St. Albans Hospital and other veteran-related events and activities. SFDS Boys Rookie Win Blessed Trinity Defeats SFDS Against St. Patricks

On Saturday, October 20, the SFDS 7th grade boys beat St. Patricks, 5-0, in a must win game for the boys. This win keeps the boys' playoff hopes alive with one more game to play in the regular season. Ryan Mazzuchin and Matthew Bambury had a combined six saves as goalkeepers to keep St. Patricks scoreless, while the defense of Michael Nestor, Ben Gressel, Kevin Watters, Matt Stack, and Connor Monahan handled the rest. As for the offense, Ian Erhard, Matt Bambury, and Joe Butler each shared in assists, while goals were scored by Matty Martin, Joe Butler (3) and Matthew Schneider (first goal!). Upon completion of the game, the boys hoisted Matthew Schneider on their shoulders and began chanting MVP for his remarkable play.

In some more soccer action, on Sunday, October 20 in Fort Tilden, Blessed Trinity Parish took on St. Francis de Sales in yet another second grade matchup. It was a good game on both sides, but Blessed Trinity came out victorious over SFDS in a 3-1 win. Photos by Paul King.

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard

Meet William Hernandez, The Artistic 'Autist'

When local autism mom warrior, Yvonne Colon, posted a Facebook video of her son, William Hernandez, age 22, playing the keyboard, I was spellbound. I knew about William’s amazing face-painting skills, but I had no idea he is a budding pianist. William is truly an artistic 'autist,' and after having my face painted into a bewitching peacock, while chatting with him about his art and life goals, I understood why his mom refers to him as “her Rain Man.” Before I plunge into my interview with William, here are some jewels of information his mom shared about her autism journey with him. Colon said, “I told my son, ‘You are not going to stay in your world, you are going to join us in our world.’” When William was younger, Colon relayed that he was nonverbal, lacked eye contact, had problems understanding and expressing emotions, but she was determined to change that. “I have training as a daycare teacher, and used my skills

to teach William. I refused to let him just be labeled and written off as autistic. I knew my son had something special. He is God’s gift, not to just me, but the world. You have to have a connection with your child. You have to enter their world. I painted his face to get him to maintain eye-to-eye contact. He had to keep looking at me, while I playfully painted and spoke with him,” she said. Colon said that she saw William had an obsession with stuffed animals, so she took him to the Bronx Zoo to show him real animals. “It was at the zoo, he saw this famous face-painter, Christopher Agostino, and William became transfixed, wanting to try face-painting himself, and worked hard on perfecting his art. Also, William loved books, and to help him with communication, we started creating books of our own, where initially I would draw the pictures and write the words, while he dictated the story. Then soon, he was writing the story himself,” Colon said. Colon has saved all these books from over a decade as a reminder of his beginnings, and his maturation today. “When he had difficulties in understanding not just his own emotions, but others, I worked with him by writing an emotive word, and asking him to write a sentence using the word. For example for the word, ‘Overwhelmed,’ he wrote the sentence, ‘I started to get overwhelmed, so I started to tantrum.’ William has come a long way, and I’m so proud of him. ation this past June, he received two awards. When I see the beautiful works of art he creates with his face-painting or when he plays the keyboard, I’m stunned. This is why I had business cards and pens made up for his face-painting business, Wonderful Faces. Just recently, I took him to an electronics store to look at keyboards, he turned to me and said, ‘I’m ready for a piano.’ I remember when he just used to just bang on the keys. Now look at the beautiful music he plays, learned by ear. As parents, we have to recognize what type of learners our autistic children are. William is a visual learner, and I too became one. The keys to parenting a child with autism are love, faith and patience,” Colon said.

The Rockaway Times I began watching his videos on YouTube, and wanted to transform people’s faces. I started studying photos of animals, and trying it out on myself and family. I choose the location for the shapes and landmarks of the face to make it look perfect. KLA: What are some of your favorite animals and characters to paint faces of? WH: Chinese warriors, tribal people, owls, fish, skeletons, spiders, butterflies, anything! At a community event, I painted Senator Sanders’ face as a tarantula spider. Pretty cool! KLA: What is your ultimate dream? WH: I want to make my future bright by getting a job, and building my face-painting business, Wonderful Faces. I also would like to have a family of my own one day.
