Turtle-y Awesome! Rare Endangered Turtles Hatch in Breezy Go, babies, go! New marine life sprang from Breezy Point last week. Ninety-six hatchlings of the world’s most endangered sea turtle, Kemp’s ridley, crawled out to sea last week on West Beach on the Rockaway peninsula, located within the Gateway National Recreation Area (Gateway), National Park Service (NPS). Kemp’s ridley is the smallest of all sea turtles and critically endangered. It was listed in the United States as endangered throughout its range in 1970. These sea turtles are found primarily in the Gulf of Mexico. Juveniles, probably carried by currents, can be found as far north as Nova Scotia along the Atlantic Coast. This is the first recorded case of a Kemp’s ridley nesting and depositing eggs in New York State, according to Maxine Montello, rescue program director, Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and

Preservation. On July 12, 2018, beachgoers observed a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle exiting the water and crawling up the beach and excavating a nest, according to Patti Rafferty, chief of resource stewardship for Gateway. NPS later excavated the nest to save the nest from extreme high tides. Staff were able to save and incubate 110 eggs. Hatchlings were later released back at West Beach. The hatchlings’ successful journey was made possible through the cooperation of several agencies and environmental groups. Along with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (US-

FWS), Padre Island National Seashore, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation, as well as the Silver Gull Beach Club, a NPS concessionaire, assisted Gateway in the protection of the Kemp’s ridley nest. “Our partners made a big difference in securing and monitoring the nest. them, we wouldn’t be here today celebrating this success,” Jen Nersesian, superintendent for Gateway, said. The decline of Kemp’s ridley and other sea turtles has been due primarily to human activities such as harvest of adults and eggs and capture in commercial fishing gear. Coastal development decreases habitat for shore nesting species, such as sea turtles and shore birds. For sea turtles, lights associated with development are a particular problem. Female turtles will avoid welllit beaches and lights disorient hatchlings. Out of the 96 hatchlings, 47 emerged from the nest at night. The photos were taken of those that emerged during the day. Turtles often return to the place they were born to lay their own eggs, so perhaps this is the start of a new turtle tradition in Breezy Point.

RBB Construction Mayhem Wreaks Havoc By Kami-Leigh Agard

For the entire summer, now leading up to the fall, local businesses in a one-mile stretch on Rockaway Beach Boulevard can’t seem to catch a break. First it was the Department of Transportation (DOT) setting up a bus stop for temporary Far Rockaway bound A-train shuttle buses on Beach 87th Street; then it was the beach closings, which according to owners, drastically affected their sales; not to mention, nine plus weekends of rain; and now — the horrendous construction taking place obliquely in front from Beach 73rd to Beach 88th Streets. These business owners agree, Mother Nature’s plans can’t be averted, but what about the city and state agencies'? The construction is part of a DOT/DDC capital project aimed to improve sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, and to create medians along the busy

thoroughfare. However, in the interim, these businesses are finding it difficult to conduct their day-to-day business activities due to eliminated parking, and the overall mayhem happening on the boulevard. The eastbound lane was entirely eliminated, and the westbound lane was made into a two-way thoroughfare. Business owners and people living, working and shopping in the area are complaining about the stench and mosquitoes swarming from the stagnant water and debris settling in the dug up sewers and water mains, power outages from manhole fires, and the difficulty to not just park, but drive on the already busy boulevard. Folks are fed up, and desperately reached out

to Community Board 14, local pols, civic leaders and The Rockaway Times for help. Tracy Obolsky, owner of Rockaway Beach Bakery, is beyond mad and is beginning to feel seriously neglected. “My sales have been drastically reduced, especially during the week. My customers can’t come in. Besides the eliminated parking, they are getting splashed from the stagnant water filling the streets. Some of them even take the risk to park their cars in the Dayton

Plaza in front of Key Food, and return to find out they are being towed. My customers that run in quickly find $115 tickets on their cars. And forget about deliveries, its impossible! There were four manhole fires. The Popeye’s fast food restaurant lost power for two days. I could go on and on. This really hurts, not just me, but my neighbors. We need help!” Obolsky ranted. Dave Khamaraj of Dave’s Liquor said, “My sales are down more than 30 percent. Ninety-five percent of the business is now foot traffic, and people are even reluctant to cross the Boulevard because of all the confusion, not to mention the smell coming up from the sewers. Also, the asphalt on the street is sinking, making it even more dangerous to cross. Every morning, when I come in, I have to boost the fuse because we have no power. Turns out the TV host showed up just in time as Taco chef, Andrew Field, was preparing to serve his one millionth taco (including the ones served at Rockaway Taco which closed a few years back). The franchise with the Golden Arches better watch out. ***** The car shuffle is over. Uptown summer parking rules are over for the season, so no need to move those cars on weekends ‘til May. ***** According to Gotham Gazette and others, voters will be able to vote on term limits for community board members in the upcoming November elections.

As a general rule, we like term limits for all elected officials. Since community boards are volunteer positions, it’s a bit more of a debate. ***** You never know. Doug Seegers has a big hit song in Scandanavia. He was homeless and living in Nashville when he was profiled in a documentary about street musicians. His song, Going Down To The River, hit the top of the charts in Sweden. And just FYI: the 66-year-old was born in Rockaway Beach. Some of his mostly hard life was written up in last week’s New York Post. ***** Boo, Yay. The Playland Haunted Station House (at the 100th Precinct) has been a big hit and they’ll do it again on Friday, October 26. But bad/good news, tickets are already sold out. ***** Don’t be a statistic. The U.S. government estimates 80,000 died of flu and flu complications last winter — the highest toll in

Local Radio Station Makes Huge Waves in Rockaway By Kami-Leigh Agard

How many of you know that Rockaway has its own radio station? You can’t find it on your AM or FM dial, but it is streamed on the internet, making it easy to tune in anytime from your computer or smartphone. And the best part? It’s run by locals supporting locals. Rockaway Beach Broadcasting Company (RBBC) was founded earlier this year by a group of locals, as an evolution of its genesis with Rockawaves Radio. This past Monday, October 1, The Rockaway Times had the pleasure of appearing on RBBC’s Rock Box Show with Queens hip hop legend, Fury Anderson (Cee-Rock "The Fury"); and interviewed hosts, Eileen Marie Steakin, and one of RBBC's founders, Matt Preis aka Max Power, (a local music producer, widely known for his ROCK!AWAY! Music Festival). To featuring live music from popular local bands like The

Jodice’s baby, and I got invited to join in on some of the shows. Then my friend, Alex Shenitsky, who was also involved, asked me if I wanted to be part of the team. Of course, I climbed right on board. I moved to Rockaway in 2013, just a year after Sandy, and immediately fell in love with not just the local indie music scene, but the community’s determination to resurrect and

to keep the creative vibrancy moving. “I’m originally from a town outside of Chicago, and my parents really got me into live music. I attended so many music festivals as a child. From jazz to blues to rock, music has always run through my veins, and obviously still remains my joy. So to be able to support local music artists not just through open mics and bar shows, but with a radio show that was all about Rockaway, was the ultimate opportunity,� Preis said. However according to Preis, with Rockawaves Radio, there were stumbling blocks. “At the time, we broadcasted out of Whit’s End’s first location on Rockaway Beach Boulevard, the now-closed Playland, and even upstairs at the Rockaway Beach Brewing Co. in Arverne. Community Aims to Keep Broad Channel Church from Closing By Katie McFadden

A longtime Broad Channel staple could use more than prayers. Christ Presbyterian Church by the Sea, one of Broad Channel’s two churches, is facing financial hardship, which could force the nearly 100-yearold place of worship to shut its doors if something isn’t done soon. On Sunday, October 7, congregants and Broad Channel residents will come together to brainstorm ideas on how to raise funds to prevent its closure. Christ Presbyterian Church by the Sea, built in 1920, has seen its fair share of hardship in its nearly 100 years. On October 1, 1968, a fire damaged the church, and services were held at the nearby St. Virgilius Church until it could be repaired. It has also seen its fair share of storm damage, especially with Hurricane Sandy, leading to total loss of its contents and the need for a complete interior renovation. However, the church has always

bounced back. Except recently, increasing financial difficulties have threatened it to a point it may not come back from. Christ Presbyterian Church by the Sea is more than just a place of worship. It is a place of history, traditions carrying on through different generations, memories and a place for all community members to gather for events. “My parents were married here. I was married here. My sister was married

here. We were all baptized here. My grandparents were the sextons of the church,” Clerk of Session Joyce Adamiszyn said. “It’s been here forever. We have a church hall that’s always served as a meeting place and has been used for different functions for the community.” Besides serving as a place of worship for Presbyterians, the church hall has served as a community staple, offering various bazaars, breakfasts with the

Easter bunny and Santa, sauerbraten dinners, pancake dinners for Shrove Tuesday, plus plenty of secular community events attended by all. However, there may come a point where these highly-anticipated events could lose their home. The community started to become aware of the problems when on August 1, Christ Presbyterian Church by the Sea released a letter saying that Sunday services would be suspended for the month due to poor summer attendance and a lack of rentals at its hall. In a phone call to The Rockaway Times, Adamiszyn further explained the cause of the service suspension. “Since Sandy, we lost so many people, and a lot of them were good contributors. Many people moved out of town and many of our older congregants have died. We were down to about 10 people at church on Sunday. For each service, we have to pay a minContinued on page 15

ister and organist a minimum, and we weren’t getting enough people coming to church and there were no rentals for the hall for the month of August to supplement the costs,” she said. A big part of the church is its hall that people make donations towards to utilize it for various events like baby showers, birthdays, anniversary parties and other occasions. “Those donations go toward paying our bills,” Adamiszyn explained. Another aspect of the church is a pre-school that has also been suffering due to Universal Pre-K now being offered for free in New York City. “A lot of people used to depend on this as a pre-school, but Universal Pre-K is killing us. We’re lucky if we have 10 kids now. We’ve started to accept younger and younger kids just to fill the program. I would hate to see this close, because what do you do with these kids, and these teachers that have been here forever?” Adamiszyn said. It isn’t just low attendance

and few hall rentals that have hurt the church, but high bills that it must keep up with. “We paid almost $8,000 last year for oil. We have to keep the building warm for kids that come in early in the morning for preschool, and last winter was very cold. Insurance runs us $10,000 a year. Between that and the oil bill, we’re $18,000 in the hold before we even start collecting money. We’ve used our savings to cover the bills but between that and coming back after Sandy, our savings have been depleted,” Adamiszyn said.

On September 2, services resumed at the church, but the threat of closing permanently still hangs on the back burner. “We have the hall booked for October and people will start having holiday parties, which will cover salaries for services, but once we’re hit with the oil bills again, we’re going to be in trouble,” Adamiszyn said. The threat of having to close has been so prevalent that Adamiszyn says she’s had to think twice about booking the hall far in advance for communion parties in May. “I’ve been afraid to

Page 15 book communions. If I tell people no, then I don’t have the hall booked, but I’m worried about telling people yes and then having the church not be opened by then,” she said. However, she remains hopeful. “I’m hoping we get a lot more time and can come up with a good plan,” she said. Broad Channel residents have already started to make donations and help by booking events at the hall, and the band, Wax-R-Back, has offered to play at a fundraiser event in the spring, but more must be done. On Sunday, October 7 at noon, a meeting will be held in the church hall (102 Noel Road) for anyone to bring donations and suggestions for ways to raise money to keep the church going. All are welcome to attend, no matter what neighborhood you’re from or what religion you believe in. Hopefully something can be done to save this community staple before Christ Presbyterian Church by the Sea becomes merely a memory. “It would be a big blow to the community to lose it,” Adamiszyn said.

Not Just a Drill Dear Editor: From September 19 through 23, as has become my so-called annual pilgrimage, I attended the New York State Volunteer Ambulance and Rescue Association's Pulse Check Annual Convention, Educational Conference, and Trade Show, held for the last three years at the Albany Marriott (on Wolf Road). In addition to many hours of classes regarding taking care of patients, as well as ourselves and our unit partners, one feature of the event is a First Aid Drill Team competition, consisting of both adult and youth squad personnel, from departments from all over New York State. They have to "treat" simulated trauma patients, and "package" them for transport, within a set amount of time. Field judges mark the teams

for actions done, and not done, to the live "practice dummy," who is usually another teammate, or from another team. As a member of the unfortunately defunct Peninsula Volunteer Ambulance Corps of the Rockaways, even before I started attending the conventions, I was aware of a neighboring department that had been winning almost all of the trophies in all judged categories. Indeed, the awards cabinet at their headquarters was larger than their current dispatchers room. Over the years, however, the other department stopped fielding drill teams. I don't know why. In my opinion, these drill teams serve a most important function, and it is not just bringing home another piece of display statuary. No matter who brings home the awards, it is the communities that the teams come from, that benefit from the drills. They eventually get medical personnel with experience in patient treatment and teamwork that I feel make

The teenager is a resident of St. John's home. He was identified by a counselor in St. John's and hopefully arrested. He had 15 prior arrests. The victim was standing on the boardwalk, looking at the ocean, when the perpetrator bumped his bike into him. He then proceeded to punch him in the face. The attacker was with three other teenagers, one boy and two girls. They just stood there. Richards Talks East End Upswing By Katie McFadden

“The east is rising,” Councilman Donovan Richards said. The councilman representing much of the east side of the peninsula, including Far Rockaway, recently stopped by The Rockaway Times office to provide some updates on big things happening in District 31. Richards didn’t have too much to worry about when it came to last year’s election for City Council. After all, he ran unopposed for the position he’s held since 2013. But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been busy. With Richards at the helm, Far Rockaway has and continues to see some huge developments taking place, with much more ahead. “There’s been a lot of momentum and good things happening in Far Rockaway and we’re excited about the progress we’ve made over the last four years. We’re finally starting to see some of those things come to fruition,” Richards said.

Some may have noticed construction signs around the old Thriftway Mall near Beach 20th and Mott Avenue last month. The green fencing is one of the first signs of what’s to come for the future of Downtown Far Rockaway. The fences mark the beginning of construction for

Phase 1 of the new Rockaway Village project for Downtown Far Rockaway. This will include a new 100 percent affordable development with 700 units of mixed-income housing, 90,000 sq. ft. of retail space and more opportunities for community facilities. Rockaway Village is

just one piece of a large Downtown Far Rockaway revitalization project, much of which was spearheaded by Richards. “We’re very excited about this project. When you look at the blight that has casted a cloud on the community, going back 30 years, or so many of the issues pertaining to crime, jobs, housing or the lack thereof, have been a detriment to real progress for Far Rockaway, and now that’s starting to change and people are more upbeat downtown. We’re starting to see real change,” Richards said. Another large change that people may start to see is construction of the new Far Rockaway Library. Last week, the library closed to make way for the start of construction on the new, state-of-the-art building to come. “We look forward to the groundbreaking this month. Continued from Page 18 project, which we found thanks to the mayor, and now it’ll be close to a $40 million library,” Richards said. Some other new big developments that have already been created, or are nearly finished include a new 150-unit senior housing facility on Beach 32nd Street, that has ground floor space for a health facility that will be run by St. John’s, and the creation of Beach Green Dunes, a new 101unit affordable housing building on Beach 44th Street, which is connected to a second phase of the project that will bring 150 more units, with a youth-run café on the ground floor. Not coming anytime soon, but something to start thinking about in Edgemere is the proposal for the old Peninsula Hospital site near Beach 51st Street. Richards says scoping for this project that would bring 2,200 new residential units to the area, will start early next year. Many have already expressed concerns about the large number of units in a small area, to which

Richards says, “Every developer has a right to put what they want on their private lot, but they’ve expressed what they want to do and they have to go through a process, and we’ll try to maximize the community benefits of this project,” he said, referring to new commercial space that the new development would bring, the creation of new jobs and the opportunity for people already living in the community getting priority to live in new, affordable housing. With the creation of so much new residential space on the peninsula, the concern for there not being enough resources for residents is also a concern. However, Richards also addressed some of these big changes that are being addressed like infrastructure. “By next summer, infrastructure upgrades begin in downtown Far Rockaway. It was slated to be a $77 million project, but now it’s at $108 million. So when talking about flooding and the lack of infrastructure downtown, and the lack of safe crossings, the need for repaving, etc., next summer we really begin to address all of

these things,” Richards said. He said a lot of new parkland and upgrades are also on the way. “We’ve fully funded about every park in our district. Wherever there’s not a park, there will be a park,” he said. Speaking on other Parks issues, at a public hearing about beach closures over the summer, Richards had brought up the beaches on the east end that are closed, especially in the Beach 20s and 30s. He said that he has a meeting coming up with Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver and is hopeful that Parks has come up with a plan that will allow for those beaches to be open in the future, or something to draw in more appeal to the east side of the boardwalk. The need for proper medical facilities is also a major concern, which Richards says he saw firsthand after having to bring his son to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. “It gave me the understanding for what needs are needed. We need more healthcare for the peninsula, period,” he said. And some improvements have been in the works, such as $5 million

The Rockaway Times in funding for a new maternity ward for St. John’s and a major upgrade to the emergency room, plus the expansion of the Addabbo Family Health Center. While the new developments include additional parking, Richards says public transportation still needs improving. “These projects can only be more successful with better transportation investments. We need an actual A train that functions and buses that function and a better ferry stop for the east,” he said, adding that he’s hoping that a stop at 84th Street could be used. Richards says that while all of these new improvements are a great start, there is still a lot of work to be done and concerns to address. He’s hoping to get some answers to those concerns from Mayor de Blasio by bringing him out to Far Rockaway for a town hall at the end of the month. Stay tuned for details. With this being the last term Richards can serve on City Council, what’s next for him? Richards hinted at a run for Queens Borough President, but that’s not until 2021.

On Sunday, September 30, the famous “Wildman� Steve Brill joined Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) to lead a foraging tour of the Rockaway shoreline. The group met at the RISE Center at Beach 59th (58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd), and walked less than a block before Steve bent over, pulling a plant out of the ground. Common plantain, as the group would

come to learn, is both medicinal and edible. It can be used to treat minor burns, or insect bites, and makes for a delicious roasted chip. Move over kale, there’s a new superfood in town! The group turned the corner of Beach 58th Street, where Steve introduced us to wild carrots and autumn olive. High school students from RWA’s Shore Corps leadership program were equal parts startled and intrigued by the intensely tart flavor of the autumn olive berries. Along the way to the shore, Steve stopped to point out a few other plants, show drawings, share fun facts and even funnier jokes. Overall, the tour was a great time, from sidewalk to shore, the Rockaways are filled with hidden edible treasures, you just need to know where to look. Hitting The Road Travel, once reserved for the wealthy and high-level executives, has become a regular experience for many people. U.S. domestic travel in 2017 was estimated at 2.25 billion person-trips. It is also estimated that 17 million people with diabetes travel annually for leisure and another 5.6 million for business. There are certain considerations and advice for those with medical conditions, including diabetes, who travel, especially if that travel is out of the country. First of all, for those who take medications and travel frequently within the country, it is recommended that they use a chain pharma-

cy, as chain pharmacies share a common computer network. For example, a Duane Reade in Oshkosh will be able to access a patient’s medical information and prescriptions from the same computer system used by the Duane Reade in Rockaway Park. If you plan to travel and you take medications, it is recommended that you start with a visit to your physician about four to six weeks before your trip. Your physician can give you a document that lists your medical conditions and the medications that you take. This will make your experience with the TSA and Customs much easier. In addi-

tion, your physician can provide you with prescriptions for emergency situations that you might encounter while away. For example, it is wise to take at least an antibiotic and a prescription for diarrhea with you when you travel. Also, especially if you are diabetic, it is important to wear a medical identification bracelet or necklace so that, should you have a medical issue, you can be identified as being a diabetic. Learn how to say, “I have diabetes� and “Sugar or orange juice please� in the language of the country you are traveling to, and carry a list of all the medication that you take. Be sure that the list is on your person at all times. Never put your medications in a checked bag. Always put them in a carry-on bag. Checked baggage sometimes gets lost, plus the baggage compartment in a plane is unheated. Extremes of cold or heat can cause medications to undergo a chemical change, rendering them ineffective. This is especially true of liquid medications like insulin. The American Diabetes Association recommends that people carry double

the amount of medication that they would expect to need for the trip. Travel plans may change or be canceled and getting additional medication while out of the country may be difficult, especially for insulin. The standard for insulin in the U.S. is U-100. That means that there are 100 units of insulin in one ml. of insulin. In Europe, the standard for insulin is U-40, meaning there are only 40 units per ml. If you used U-40 insulin in a U-100 syringe, you would have to multiply the amount of insulin by 2.5 to get the correct dose. That would get confusing very fast. Lastly, for diabetics using a blood glucose monitor, it is important to know that for every 1000 feet of elevation above sea level, the device will underestimate the glucose level by one to two percent. Then there are issues regarding foods, time zones and medication dosing intervals, etc. Check with your doctor before you go. It will make your trip that much easier and enjoyable. A great big shout out to my neighbor across the street, Joan Marie DelaHunt, who lost her home seven years ago when Hurricane Irene blew through our area. Joan had worked for the better part of a year, immediately after Irene, playing chutes and ladders with FEMA and the insurance companies when on October 29, 2012, Sandy's storm surge

rolled through the neighborhood, negating all her efforts to date and sending her back down the chute to start a brand new game, this time with New York City's Build it Back Program. A brand new modular house was recently emplaced on the raised pilings of her property and is currently in the process of finishing work, including siding, in the hopes of being ready for occupancy in the near future. By the time you are reading this column, I will have already attended yesterday's Hofstra University's Symposium on Long Island Hurricanes on the 80th anniversary of the Long Island Express Hurricane back in 1983, which is slated to discuss our current knowledge of hurricane forecasting, which has made great strides since 1938, but still lacking in certain areas, particularly in communicating storm-related information to stakeholders. Discussions

will also take place to define how future planning and sustainable development must account for future tropical cyclone impacts, keeping in mind lessons learned from past events. Some of you may have noticed that I dropped off the radar for a couple of weeks recently, as I inadvertently stopped watching the Hallmark Movie Channel and found myself addicted to the burlesque-like, Threepenny Opera drama taking place within the hallowed halls of our government's self-described sacrosanct retirement home for wealthy elderly gentlefolk with entirely too much time on their hands - otherwise known as the United States Senate. I will never forget how I sat transfixed at the television screen when a wannabe Thracian (Democrat) Gladiator from New Jersey (aka Senator Corey Booker), flushed with

pride at what he considered his revolt against the Roman (Republican) Senators, “This is about the closest I’ll probably ever have in my life to an ‘I am Spartacus’ moment.’” You have to hand it to Corey, it’s not every day that a politician with presidential ambitions becomes a leader of a gladiatorial revolt against the state. But that’s what Booker did as he squabbled theatrically with Republicans in a cheap publicity stunt over supposedly confidential Kavanaugh-related documents, which indicated the nominee was in favor of racial profiling. As it turned out, the documents are not confidential at all and actually depict Kavanaugh as having rebuked racial profiling. Still, the Spartacus bit was epic. And an epic fail for Booker. Broad Channel - Why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Having never been to the former playground of the rich and famous, I packed up the mermaid and our fins and headed northeast to see what a real mansion looked like. First of all, whoever drew

up the state lines for Connecticut should have shortened the state. It’s simply too long. But the reward is that Rhode Island is not, and so after driving at my new senior citizen speed of 60 miles per hour, we finally arrived at this delightful, New England original town. Why original, you say? Well it turns out that Newport was among the five most important cities in pre-revolutionary America. Joining the seaport city

At some point, however, all the revolutionary homes were almost lost when after decades of neglect, the city decided to tear them down. And thank God she did because they are so historically important. Doris lived in an interesting part of town in Newport. Her neighbors at one time were the richest people in America. At a time when there was no income tax in the USA, industrialists amassed great fortunes and spent them as conspicuously as possible by building great, gilded mansions imitating their European ancestors. Are you a player? Dear Enchantress, I am a single mom, I have two daughters. They are good kids. They are 10 and 13. I constantly hear them worrying, and disciplining each other and their friends! I don't know what to do. Right now, I yell at them to stop, I tell them to stop worrying, and to enjoy their childhood. They look at me with blank stares. I like to think I am quite progressive. I homeschooled them up until they were seven and eight years old, then they wanted to be with their friends, so they went off to school. How do I

get the message across that they are ok, and they don't have to be small mommies, that people don't like to be told what to do. I worry that eventually their friends will not want to hang out with them, and then when they get older they will "mommy" their husbands. Dear Worry Wart, Take a breath. Worry is a disease that is passed on from generation to generation. I, myself, come from a long line of worriers. It's my default to worry. It sounds like, just from reading your letter, that you are role

modeling exactly what you don't want them to do. SO, that's actually great. They are following in your footsteps, while you are worrying about them worrying. SO, dear amazing Mama. It's time to bring in some enchanted mindfulness. What does that mean? Here's the simplest way to get the picture. When you are thinking and worrying about the past or the future, you are not present. Being present is where all life's goodies and enchantment is! I see as soon as worry begins, play ends. I wonder if you yourself play? Do you have permission to be silly? To be goofy? To play dress up? To go dancing? As soon as play ends, worry takes over, and actually young girls have reason to worry. Our world is in the middle of a transition of what it means to be a woman. So, without indulging them in their worry, it's always powerful (if you can be neutral) to ask them

Page 35 questions and have open communication about fears and worries, I suggest having a family meeting for this. So there is a beginning and an end. You must also follow this. You leading by example is everything to these girls. Even you asking this question is amazing, and shows you are doing a great job, you are aware, and you are open to get advice. The generation before you wasn't as open to change (not all, but most). A great place to play for you is dance class, a place to lose and find yourself, and move energy. This is not a solution that can only happen in your head. Creating a new habit works better when moving your body goes along with it. Pamela Peroni O’Grady Pam O’Grady, 73, of Belle Harbor, N.Y., died on Monday October 1st 2018 at her home with her beloved children. Pamela was born on September 8th, 1945 in Manhattan, New York. She is survived by her devoted children Kristin (Darren) Franchock and Joseph (Katelyn) O’Grady, brother Peter Peroni, as well her 6 grandchildren Jamie, Daisy, Jojo, Petey, Cece and Jack. Pam was a devoted homemaker, parishioner of St. Francis de Sales and a long-standing tennis member of the Belle Harbor Yacht Club. Visitation will be held at Denis S. Last month, a public meeting was held at Peninsula Library with affected business owners and civic leaders to inform the NYS Department of Design and Construction (DDC) representatives and an agency contractor on how the construction has become a nightmare for everyone. At the meeting, DDC reps admitted that the hold up is because they are waiting for permit approvals from the state to continue and finally finish the construction. Phil Cicia, proprietor of Beer House Beverages, said, “At the meeting, these reps were very honest. A project manager just came in yesterday, questioning what our complaints were. He said, ‘The hold up is because we are waiting for the state to approve payment for all the contractors doing the work’. Listen, I

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2018 agree. It’s not the workers fault. They are just doing their job, but they can’t continue until they get paid. The police officers have been more lenient with dispersing tickets. They get it. Everyone gets it. All the equipment is there, just waiting to be put in. The state has to finally do its job, and pay these people. “When you think about the bureaucracy between the city and state agencies, it’s mind-boggling. I complained about the stagnant water, not just because of the smell, but because of the mosquitoes swarming. I’ve had to put bug repellants in my store for Christ’s sake. I know the work is going to be done. But we’re just waiting for something to finally come through!” The Rockaway Times continuously reached out to the DDC, which released this statement: “This is an important project representing an $18 million investment in the community. When complete, the neighborhood will have new, upgraded infrastructure and a street that is fully rebuilt from sidewalk to sidewalk.

“DDC understands and tries to minimize the effects of construction on the community. To manage the needs of residents and businesses, DDC has a fulltime community construction liaison assigned to the project. Erich De Suza is at the site every day and is available to the public in person, by phone or by email. Anyone with concerns or special requests can contact him at 347-771-5846 or email: sandh13ccl@gmail.com” Following the inquiry by The Rockaway Times, Mr. De Suza visited the businesses The Times referred to in order to check on their concerns and remind them that DDC has an outreach system in place to help and respond to them quickly. Regarding the alleged odor, DDC has inspected the site repeatedly, including this week, and found that there is no sewage infiltration into the construction area. “We will continue to monitor for odors and if they’re identified we’ll seek out the source and a remedy,” the DDC said. The DDC says that it has tried

Page 37 to create ways to bring relief to businesses, like ensuring the nearby businesses continue to get deliveries. According to the DDC, an area near the corner of Beach 87th Street has been converted to temporary parking for delivery trucks loading and unloading, and other arrangements have been made for deliveries to be made on side streets. In response to the power outages, DDC pointed fingers at PSEG, which they say carried out work near the site recently. The project is extensive, as it includes new water mains; new catch basins; new fire hydrants; full street reconstruction including sidewalks; new bus stops with reinforced concrete pads; a new traffic island near the Hammel Houses; new street lighting; and new trees. The nearby businesses may be going through hardship right now, but when all is said and done, there are hopes that the much-needed improvements will benefit the area. It is expected to be complete by summer 2020.

InkSplash 2018 marks the 10th anniversary of the RAA’s annual printmaking exhibit. BC Shamrocks Pee Wee Team Devours and Conquers By Kami-Leigh Agard

After three straight games, the Broad Channel Shamrocks Pewee Football squad were on the losing end with a score chart of nil, but this past Sunday, September 30, they came out like killer bees and swarmed their opponent, the North Babylon Bulldogs, crushing them with two touchdowns, plus an extra point. Volunteer Head Coach Keith Mattone, a Breezy Point resident and high school football coach in Brooklyn, said their playbook was about stepping up the defense, and working together to make sure the Bulldogs never had a chance to get to the half line.

“Our offensive line block was a lot better this week, plus the defense came out aggressively. Overall, this is a young team with not a lot of experience, but they are gelling together determinedly and working on getting better. This game definitely reflected that,” Mattone said. According to Assistant Defense Coach Edwin Williams,

an Arverne resident and father to two boys playing with the Shamrocks, these six- to seven-year-olds were in enemy territory at the Bulldogs’ home field, but stood the course, and despite their challenging beginnings in the season with the Nassau Suffolk Football League, gave it their all, coming out the victor milking the honey.

“We call our kids the ‘Killer Bees,’ because they work as a team, and hard. They went into a hostile territory, but kept focused and determined throughout all the practices, preparing themselves for the ultimate showdown. Our defense stepped up their game, stopping the Bulldogs in their tracks at every turn. We beat them 13-6, and scored two touchdowns. These kids were amazing. The defensive line gave us excellent field positions by stopping the Bulldogs, which enabled our offensive line to score. Head coach Steve Mattone, really had it down to a science, and these kids followed solemnly, determined to keep the Bulldogs at bay,” Williams said. Coach Mattone, who is beyond stoked, said besides his dedicated team, he is also thankful for the parents, who also stood the course. “I’m especially grateful for all of the parents, who make sure these kids get to all the practices during the week. Channel View Students Receive Huge College Incentive Four Channel View School for Research students already have a good head start on paying for college. While in ninth grade last year, Lamech Shoy Nya Greene, Zenab Gabr and Sondra Skwora won $125K in college scholarships through the Give Back Foundation. Students were selected based on a rigorous application process that included: meeting academic benchmarks of 85 percent or higher, participating in Advanced Placement courses, interviews, teacher recommendations and a community service requirement. The Give Back Foundation provides full tuition, fees, and room and board scholarships for Pell-eligible students to attend one of four partner colleges. Give Back offers awardees who graduate from high school and who maintain at least a GPA of 3.0, a scholarship at Williamson School of the Trades, Mercy College, Queens College

(CUNY), or Binghamton University (SUNY), for full tuition, fees, room and board for four years. Awardees are required to participate in bi-monthly mentoring events throughout high school that are designed to prepare students for the rigors of college life. Channel View’s students recently attended their first mentoring event sponsored by the Give Back Foundation at the SUNY Welcome Center in Manhattan.
