Things got spicy on the Beach 133rd beach block this past weekend! On Saturday, October 2, the block held its second Chili Cook Off this season. Five chilis were entered into the competition. According to neighbor, Larry Gray, it was “very hard to judge as they were all delicious.” However, the big winner was a vegetarian chili. Kudos to Beach 133rd for always keeping things interesting and finding fun new ways to bring neighbors together.

THE ROAD HOME Time for an oil change. 4,816 miles in the books. And, of course, the last 11 miles were the hardest. From wide open highways to the parking lot of the Belt Parkway. Nothing says Welcome home! more than stop and crawl on the Belt. We hit enough stops for a Johnny Cash song: Elmira, Toledo, Frankenmuth, Mackinaw, Mackinac, Marquette, Minneapolis, we’ve been everywhere, man. Fargo, Bismarck, Rapid City, Rushmore, Badlands, Custer State, Sioux Falls and ….Warren Buffet’s house. Malvern, Iowa, Kansas City, Kansas and …. Wait, a word about Warren’s house. We wanted to click off Nebraska as a state that we visited so we cruised by the billionaire’s house in Omaha. Basically, it’s a Belle Harbor house on the 200 block with a private drive. Maybe 1.5 mil. After days of postcard drives, Kansas City, Kansas made you ask, what happened? Where’d all the good stuff go? I even did the New York safe driving test. Every time I slowed under 25 miles mph, I clicked the door locks. And it was only 11 in the morning. The good Kansas City is in Missouri, in view, just across the river. Later that day, we rolled into Columbia, Mo and met friends from Brooklyn who were working at the University there. We were happy to have other people to talk to and they were happy for the same reason. Back on the road, we checked out the St. Louis Arch. It was cool. Kinda like they stretched the Washington Monument and bent it and stuck the other side in the ground. Covid must’ve wrecked the downtown econ-

omy. Vacant office buildings and closed restaurants were as obvious as the Arch. The next stop was Santa Claus, Indiana. I mention it so you don’t have to stop there. I’m full Grinch on the town that should’ve been called Coal. I don’t know what I expected, elves in the pizza place? People walking reindeer? A string of lights above the one street didn’t seem like asking too much. All you get is a strip mall with a Christmas shop and a few Santa Claus statues here or there. We’d planned to stay the night and have some hot totties and a jolly good time, but I sprung to my truck and gave my wife a whistle and flew out of there like the down of a thistle. (First time I ever did that). Instead of staying in Santa Claus, we headed to Louisville, had some lasagna, and headed to Ohio in the morning. Columbus, Ohio is a city worth visiting. It’s got everything. Except an ocean. But it’s easy to picture living there. Lots of neighborhoods with fine looking houses, more restaurants than anywhere else I can think of, and a major university. But it also has January and February and March. Get back in the car. When you leave Columbus, you know you’re heading home. It’s nearly impossible to make spontaneous stops or veer off the beaten path. You’re in West Virginia for 30 seconds then into Pennsylvania and the road just looks familiar. You might as well push on. You know the Belt is waiting for you. Might as well get it over with. And it didn’t disappoint. But all things considered, the Belt was better than Santa Claus.

Dan Mundy Jr. of EcoWatchers believes it’s a milestone and probably the first time it’s happened in a hundred years. The seal is called Ruffles (after the island, Ruffle Bar) and is often spotted enjoying Jamaica Bay, which is now cleaner than it’s been in decades, allowing all sorts of sea life to flourish. Here’s hoping Ruffles Jr sticks around. ***** NPS tells us that equipment and broken concrete on Heinzelman Road (the main road into the park off State Road) is part of the Fort Tilden Paving and Drainage Improvements project. “Curb and paving work will resume in early October. The event kicks off at 1 p.m. followed by at beach cleanup at Beach 38th Street. ***** Councilman Eric Ulrich announced that his office has secured $65,000 in funding to remove derelict boats from Jamaica Bay. NYC Parks will use the money to rid local waters of vessels that are often just abandoned by owners who can longer afford to maintain them. Locals Bike to the Beach for a Good Cause By Katie McFadden

It was a big ride for a big cause. A group of locals took part in the annual Bike to the Beach on Saturday, October 2, riding from Rockaway to the Hamptons, all to raise money for those with autism and other disabilities. On Saturday, a team of nine guys met at team leader, Joe Mure’s home, the site of the annual Little North Pole, to jump in on the ride that began in Manhattan and continues on to Long Island. At about 6 a.m. on Saturday, the guys met up and rode to the first checkpoint in Fort Tilden, where they joined the rest of the Bike to the Beach riders. The local group calls themselves the Rockaway Loopers, named after “The Loop,” the route that goes across both Rockaway bridges, around Jamaica Bay and along the Belt Parkway. While keeping in shape, this group often trains around “The Loop,” so it was an appropriate name when

they decided to form a team this year. Among the locals on the team were Mure, Mike Caiazzo, Frank Gaeta, Jimmy Orlando, Christopher Padilla and Edward Mattera. The Bike to the Beach, a full 100-mile ride, allows riders to jump in at various points for a shorter trek. Mure and most of this team did more than 80

miles. But no matter where riders start, it’s all for a good cause. The annual ride helps raise money for autism and disability charities such as Autism Speaks. For Mure, who has done the ride four times, Bike to the Beach is an opportunity to help him stay in shape and to raise money for a good cause, something Mure is a

big advocate for. While Mure’s Little North Pole mostly raises funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, he often helps other causes. Mure holds additional special lighting events for St. Camillus Special Olympics as well as a school that serves kids with autism, so he is no stranger to this cause. “It’s a difficult ride. A long ride. It’s not an easy ride, but at the same time, it’s nothing compared to what these kids with autism deal with each and every day of their lives. So we dealt with some difficult moments throughout the ride. They deal with difficult moments throughout their day and that’s every day,” Mure said. “Not only is it great exercise, it’s for a great cause. That’s why we rode, to try to help some of the children with autism.” With their fundraising efforts, the Rockaway Loopers were able to raise nearly $7,500 for the event. Continued on page 11

It’s a goal that I try to meet once a year to justify some of my bad habits,” Caiazzo said. He added that everyone reaching their goals was made possible by the support of the team. “I definitely had the help of our team. When someone is feeling sluggish, the other guys will say, ‘come on!’ We kind of push each other when you need it. It helps to work as a team,” Caiazzo said. Inside were two photos from around the ‘60s or ‘70s—one, of the boat on Horseshoe Beach near Broad Channel, and another of a young woman in the boat on the water with the train

bridge in the background. This boat was local. That information was later confirmed. The Pearces remembered back in the ‘60s and ‘70s when boat races used to be a big deal in Broad Channel and hydroplanes were among the vessels used. Dan Pearce Continued on page 13

decided to call up another local who knows boats well, Tucker Monday, to see if he recognized the hydroplane. He did. “That’s Richie G’s boat,” he said. Pearce realized that not only was this boat from Broad Channel— he knew the original owner. Unfortunately, the owner of the boat had passed away. “After about 60 years, to see this thing come back home, it’s pretty amazing. It’s funny that we knew Richie,” Pearce said. “After so many years, he had saved this boat. He must’ve really liked it. If you leave these things outside, usually they’re done. Any wooden boat can’t withstand the weather. But this one had the original motor, the controls, steering, everything in the boat was 100% intact.” It just needed a little tender loving care. The outside paint and markings on the boat had been sanded down at some point, so Pearce decided to give it a little makeover and restore

the hydroplane to its original glory. “I restored it. I had to replace some of the hardware. I had Rockaway Graphics do the name on the side of the boat, ‘Close Encounters,’ and we put the numbers back on. It’s all new,” Pearce said. However, the restored hydroplane hasn’t seen much use. After all, Pearce says it’s a little too small for him. “You gotta be a little guy riding them boats,” he said. “We have no use for it. It’s been sitting in my man cave and my wife wants it gone.” But Pearce figures someone else might enjoy it. He’s considering putting it up for sale. “There’s a market for these things,” he said. Voting Counts Dear Editor: Greetings to the people of Rockaway, Queens and fellow New Yorkers. I served 37 years with the NYPD, recently retired as Chief of Transit, and 20 of those years I was a Chief/ Executive. I have watched our city go from bad to worse in the 1980s and early 1990s, and then rebound to levels that no one would have expected in the late 1990s and 2000s. Real estate was booming. Our city became a brighter jewel than it ever has been. There were many contributing factors, but I know from my experience that the biggest factor was public safety. When the NYPD, the rest of the criminal justice system and the city’s elected leaders focused on crime reduction and a better quality of life for all of us, the results were remarkable. Our city got better and better. Even skeptics came to a point where they would not think it was possible to turn back. But sadly, the turmoil of 2020, along with the despicable pandering by too many elected officials to far left ideologies, at the expense of police officers and the safety of the people of this city, result-

Unnerved by the amount of speeding cars on our highways, driving recklessly? Intimidated by the packs of unregistered and unlicensed and of course, uninsured, motorcycles and ATVs speeding through our streets in large packs? What does this all add up to? A disregard for the rule of law at the expense of us all. And far more troubling, and catastrophic, the number of people shot has doubled and the number of people killed has increased by a third. As of today, 21 children have been shot and killed in our city this year, more than triple the number in 2019 or 2020. Is that not enough for us to demand change? We do not have to accept this. Never think that we do. How do we turn this around? Not by posting on Facebook or by complaining to each other in our coffee shops, but at the election polls. Vote for the people who will be committed to turning this around. Vote for Joann Ariola for New York City Council, District 32. Find candidates like her. That is how we can turn this around. Our democracy is all about voting for people who care about what we care about. What do you care about? Give voice to that on November 2nd. Make sure you and your family get to the polls. Excellent Care Dear Editor: This letter is being written to express my appreciation for the great work being accomplished by the members of the Wound Care Center at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway. Located on the ninth floor, Dr. Thomas Lubeski, DO, FACOS, WCC, Medical Director, and his dedicated staff of residents, nurses, technicians, and assistants continue to serve the community in a most professional and magnificent manner. Throughout the past few years, I would never hesitate to bring my elderly mom who required wound care for treatment. She always recovered quickly due to excellent care provided by the staff members under the supervision of Dr. Lubeski. About one month ago, I required the services of Dr. Lubeski and his terrific team, and I am pleased to report I am on the road to re-

covery. Although I did not require such services, the unit is equipped with Hyperbaric Chambers which provide 100% oxygen saturation to patients with limb or life-threatening wounds and provide patients with more space and comfort during their treatments. After a Long Road, Orangetheory is Moving Forward By Katie McFadden

Orangetheory is becoming more than a theory. The long-awaited boutique fitness studio on Beach 116th Street is finally getting worked out. The “Coming Soon” signs went up at One Sixteen, located at 133 Beach 116th Street, last week. Orangetheory Fitness is on the way after a more than two year wait. Local resident and fitness expert Matthew Long, long had a dream of bringing a boutique fitness studio to Rockaway after he made it his full-time home after Hurricane Sandy. As a competitive athlete, Long, a retired firefighter, was looking for a good place to help him keep in shape. “At that point, there were two boutique fitness places, Suncycle and Rock Fit. I went to both,” Long said. However, he wanted to become more involved and started looking into buying a place around 2009. He considered buying Suncycle and adding his own touch, but it fell through. He then spent time working for Rock Fit and then Rockaway Gliders but having a gym of his own remained the goal. “I never gave up with the dream of wanting to own my own studio,” he said. In 2016, Long was introduced to Orangetheory Fitness, and it was the inspiration he needed. “I was blown away. This is what we need here,” he said. It took some convincing for corporate to grant Long the rights to open up a locally owned Orangetheory on the peninsula. And when The Marcal Group began searching for retailers for its new condominium building, One Sixteen, Long jumped at the opportunity. “I was the first retail person they signed. It’s the same exact location where Suncycle was,” Long said. Of course, Long ran into some immediate challenges. Opening a gym within New York City comes with its own unique hurdles. Gyms were required to apply for a Board of Standards and Appeals Special Permit for a Physical Culture Establishment, which needs to be renewed every 10 years. “It’s

a permit on the books since the late ‘60s that was meant to stop brothels from opening up. It’s a useless money grab for the city that I believe should’ve been taken off the books years ago. It could cost a studio like mine up to $50K in added cost,” Long said. But it wasn’t going to stop him. Another challenge was needing a zoning change from a C1 to a C2 for a fitness business. And he needed that squared away before applying for the BSA permit. But then Covid hit. “That just shut everything down,” Long said. With restrictions in place, a few local gyms wound up closing permanently during Covid. But Long pursued. “At that point, there was no rush with Covid and the uncertainties around it. There’s still uncertainties, but the landlords and I were invested in making this work and I didn’t want to give up on my dream,” he said. As gyms opened back up again, the process moved forward. Mark Caller of The Marcal Group proceeded with the ULURP process for the zoning change. In May, Community Board 14 approved the application. It landed on Mayor de Blasio’s desk on August 26 and wasn’t vetoed. And in the meantime, according to Long, the BSA permit is no longer an issue. Earlier this year, the New York City Department of City Planning (DCP) proposed a text amendment to do away with the BSA permit for smaller gyms. The proposal is making its way toward being approved and is supposed to go into effect in November, Long says.

“We went through the rezoning and all that good stuff and now technically, we will not need that permit, so that’s a good thing. And that’s why we’re moving forward. Construction should start November 1,” Long said. That’s why last week, signs went up on the building as a little teaser and reminder that despite the long process to get there, Orangetheory is on its way to Rockaway. Within a few days, photos of the sign made its way to the Friends of Rockaway Beach Facebook page, creating renewed buzz about the soon-to-come gym. So what sets Orangetheory apart? “I’m a retired fireman. I did 17 years with the fire department. I was a college athlete, ironman, triathlon competitor, and unfortunately I was in a bad accident, and I had a lot of people to thank for saving my life, but everyone I thanked said ‘it wasn’t me, it was because of your level of fitness that kept you alive,’ so Orangetheory is what I believe to be the closest group fitness studio program that I trained with as an athlete,” Long said. “It’s all based off of your heartrate. It’s proper training for anyone at any level. Since you’re training based on your heartrate, it doesn’t matter if a person is a college athlete or if they need to lose 50 pounds. That’s what drew me to Orangetheory.” Already part-owner of an Orangetheory location in Danbury, Ct., Long knows just what this nationwide program can offer. “It’s a one-hour full body group workout and with focus

on heartrate-based training, it’s guaranteed to provide results. It’s backed by science and we’re an incredibly technology savvy studio. It tracks your workouts, where you’ll instantly get your results. You’ll see them in real time. The best part is that personal trainers can be expensive, and we only hire personal trainers, and they’ll inspire you throughout the workout and keep you from under- or over-training, will keep you safe, and keep you healthy,” he said. What do workouts involve? “You’ll circuit through treadmills, rowing machines and strength training where you’ll use bodyweight exercises, TRX suspension trainers, dumbbells and other equipment. No class, in the 19 years of Orangetheory, is duplicated. The workout changes every day,” Long said. And anyone can do it. Long says the oldest member at his Orangetheory location in Danbury is 83 years old and the youngest is 17. One of the benefits of being an Orangetheory member is that it is a national network, so if on vacation, members can go to a nearby Orangetheory location and take a class. “In the network, there is a woman in Colorado who is 94 years old who goes to these workouts. It’s all customizable because you train to your own heartrate,” Long said. When open, Long says Orangetheory Fitness Rockaway Beach will have 12 stations, so classes can have anywhere from 24 to 33 people at one time, depending on the class. “There’s a wide range of classes we can offer,” Long said. Long says he’s hoping to open the Rockaway location by January 2022. In the meantime, Long is taking action before he opens. Starting in November, he’ll begin marketing “founders’ rates,” the lowest rates available for people to join, as construction goes on. Long is also beginning the process of looking for employees. 100TH PRECINCT COMMUNITY COUNCIL SEPTEMBER MEETING RECAP By Katie McFadden

The latest 100th Precinct Community Council meeting featured introductions to new officials, crime stat updates and concerns shared among the community. On Wednesday, September 22, the Council, officers from the 100th precinct, representatives from local elected officials offices and community members joined for the monthly meeting on Zoom. Council president Kathy Heavey spoke about the precinct’s National Night Out Against Crime being a success in August. The precinct is planning to hold a Halloween event at the end of October. This event will likely be a trunk-or-treat as done in the past. Heavey also announced that the precinct’s community affairs officer, Maurice Moore, was recently promoted to sergeant and was transferred. The new community affairs officer is Officer Victor Boamah. Boamah, who introduced himself, is a longtime Far Rockaway resident. He is a former 101st Precinct Communi-

ty Council president who went on to become an officer himself and has been with the 100th Precinct for more than three years. Heavey had also just received the news that Deputy Inspector Ronald McCall, the former commanding officer of Transit District 23 on Beach 116th Street, recently transferred to a district near Central Park. McCall introduced the new commanding officer of Transit District 23, Captain Edison R. Gutierrez. The captain explained that he came from Manhattan North’s 28th Precinct and assured the attendees that he is there for them. “Customer service for the community is extremely important to me. Anything transit related and even off transit, my door is always open and I’m always willing to help the community in any capacity,” Captain Gutierrez said. Keisha Cunningham, corresponding secretary for the Council, provided information about a new Youth Coordination Officer program to provide culinary education. The program will provide lessons on various ethnic recipes,

plus other kitchen tips like how to set a table. The program will be for kids ages 12 and up. Cunningham is looking for local chefs or local residents to come by once a week to teach kids how to make different dishes. They’re also seeking donations of old pots and pans and other kitchen tools, plus dry foods. Donations can be dropped off at the 100th Precinct on Beach 94th Street and anyone interested in the program or volunteering can call the YCO’s at (718) 318-4206. Captain Odelia Lee of Parks Enforcement Patrol was on hand to provide updates from the summer. She explained that her unit will be on duty through mid-October, patrolling the beaches to make sure people are staying out of the water. PEP recently participated in a rescue with the precinct, of a 74-year-old man who got caught on a jetty. PEP and the NYPD were able to rescue the man and transfer him to a hospital in Staten Island. Jean Beauvoir, executive officer of the 100th Precinct, provided the crime stats for the 28-day

period, saying crime was down overall by 36%. “No murders, no rapes, but one robbery of an elderly male on Shore Front Parkway,” he said. The man was sleeping, and someone attempted to steal his bike, injuring the man in the process. Officer Beauvoir said the most concerning issue lately is grand larceny, involving phone scams. “Elderly people are getting scammed from their money. People are getting calls saying their grandkids are arrested and they need money to bail them out. We had at least five incidents in the last 28 days, including one where a scammer was able to get $36,000 from one person,” he said. He advised everyone to pass along the word about these scams. Several residents brought up concerns about quality of life issues and smaller crimes taking place around the vicinity of Beach 116th Street. Beauvoir said they now have an NCO posted on the block to try to deter such issues. The next 100th Precinct Community Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 27 on Zoom.

I’ve been here, part of this community, through 9/11, the Fight 587 crash, the financial collapse, Sandy and now the pandemic,” she says from her Beach 90th Street office. “I’m really excited to be here, to

Licensed Real Estate Broker Melissa Carrington, owner of RE/MAX Elite on Rockaway Beach Boulevard, may be the first Rockaway realtor to advertise a haunted house. Or at least sponsor a Halloween home decorating contest, compete with a top prize of a $300 gift certificate at any local restaurant. It is all part of supporting and being part of the Rockaway community for Carrington. “I’m originally from the Hudson Valley area, where I met my husband,” she explains. “We moved to the Rockaways in 1998. But his family goes way back. His father and grandfather were doctors here. Dr. Carrington, his father, could literally fix anybody in a pinch.” And that name means something around here. “I’ll be in the post office in Far Rockaway, and somebody will tap me on the shoulder when they hear my name is Carrington,” she said. “They’ll tell me about how Dr. Carrington delivered them, and it’ll turn out to be my husband’s grandfather.” Carrington cemented her own Rockaway roots when “we entered a lottery for the first new units being built at Arverne by the Sea. Out of about 1,200 entries, we were one of 27 that got picked.” Even then she saw firsthand Rockaway’s real estate potential. “Oh, with Arverne by the Sea people were saying, ‘Why would anyone build there?’ Then, ‘Oh, they’re just going to build the first few and that’ll be it. You’ll see. But we bought into that first phase, and it has been growing ever since.” Though now deeply steeped in the peninsula’s growing real estate scene, hers was not exactly a sunny, sandy beach path in getting there. “I was working three jobs, studying interior design at Fashion Institute of Technology and commuting back forth between Manhattan and Rockaway. After I graduated FIT, I took a job

as a marketing manager with a home design company. It was family-owned, I liked it. It was good,” Carrington said, smiling at the memory. “Then they were bought out by a large company. After a while, well, it was not so good, and it was too much. Eventually I quit…without a plan.” For a while she worked at Hot Yoga on Beach 116th Street while taking lessons from owner Anita Ruderman. She also got to know realtor Lisa Jackson. “I had lots of stuff—curtains, shower accessories, etc. leftover from my interior design days. So I offered to work dressing up the houses she was showing.” Before long, Carrington went from dressing houses to showing them with Jackson sponsoring her as she got her own real estate license. Although Carrington eventually went her own way, she was happy to say about Jackson, “We still have a good working relationship.” When Carrington started her own business, she saw national/international real estate firm RE/MAX as a natural fit. Mixing her own highly local touch with international resources and support, she says, “My attraction was that RE/MAX is the most recognized brand in realty. But it’s also still family-owned. My favorite thing, though, that made me choose

Rockaway’s Pets are Blessed Pets are surely already a blessing but on Monday, animals across the world received some extra blessings for the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. On October 4, many Catholic churches celebrate the feast day of the patron saint of animals with a blessing of the animals. This included a couple local churches on the peninsula, including St. Francis de Sales on Beach 129th Street. On Monday afternoon, both Father Bill and Father Jim invited all to bring their animals to be blessed in the Prayer Garden. The priests led the ceremony with a prayer before going around the garden to spread blessings among the pets in attendance. Everything from dogs to guinea pigs, turtles and bearded dragons were

among the dozens of pets who were sprinkled with holy water as pet parents received a coin commemorating the occasion. Photos by Katie McFadden.

Letting Go of the Past

There is so much freedom and joy when we learn the path of least resistance by simply letting go of the past and any judgements or selfsabotage. I am speaking about healing yourself internally by releasing your deepest thoughts and pains. I don’t fully understand why there is so much sickness and mental anguish but what I do know is how to turn inward and clear out the cluttered spaces. Taking a journey to a sacred ground where ancestors have lived off the land long before we were alive is a special treat. I will tell you a story about my recent travels upstate in our beautiful state of New York. Travelling with two beautiful souls who were also seekers of peace and happiness. I am forever indebted for their

kindness and support. They do not even know how they opened their hearts to me fully and unconditionally. We traveled to a retreat home designed like a long house on the top of a hill overlooking the forest. Light on a Hill is in the Finger Lakes. A very small, intimate group of ten women from all walks of life would spend three nights together in this beautiful long house. The retreat leader is one of the most special teachers you will ever meet. When you look into her eyes, she holds her gaze upon you, giving you her full loving attention. She is humble, gentle, kind and full of light. She sings, plays music, reads poetry and organically moves into yoga poses. The words, divine grace, comes to mind when I think of her. She is a healer who will teach guided meditation throughout our stay, encouraging us to rest, relax and let go. Taking this inward jour-

ney will magically heal all of the retreaters. The title of the retreat is, “The Treasure Found.” So many blessings and outrageous beauty. Below is one of the many poems our retreat leader will read to us while we are laying on our backs in a yoga pose. “Sometimes my soul feels itself to be in great exile from its homeland but then I remember my mother tongue is the poetry my heart is so fluent in, its dialect, laughter and tears my other native language is rising early to praise all the great things the sun falls upon. My national song is a geyser of joy hitting the highest notes of ecstasy and breaking every glass ceiling in the mind once trapped God inside. My anthem is the feisty love parade that marches gaily from my heart to yours, my religion is the untying of old knots that once kept my soul hitched to rigidity and smallness and my doctrine is what-

ever comes after that when the soul’s full range of movement is restored. My flag is every mood of the moon that reflects my inmost heart. My ancestry is the collection of radiance from morning dew passed down by blades of grass as they stand vigil in silent reverence to be part of wonderment of receiving the ancient inheritance of each new morning. My DNA is the encrypted love notes written in the luminous ink from the stars, my soul is an ancient heritage of love songs from God and whatever it is I’m doing here, has mostly to do with pledging allegiance to that great anthem. This one is about vaccination shots; but not whether you should get vaccinated or not, just about how crazy the world is these days. If you are wondering, I am vaccinated. I got the J&J shot before they pulled it off the market. Very comforting. I had to anesthetize my mermaid to get the shot, but that’s a differ-

ent story altogether. I always got flu shots because my dad always did, and he never got the flu. At least that’s how I remember it. He got plenty of colds, but he always said it wasn’t the flu, so I always got the flu shot. Makes no sense, I know, but that’s how I roll. I will not be naming names here, but this all happened in Rockaway, so make your own guesses. My last time at

my primary care doctor, the doctor suggested that I investigate getting the Pneumonia and Shingles shots. I had gotten the Shingles shot about eight years ago, but the doctor said the new one just came out and I should get it as a booster. When I was a kid, I got every kind of thing imaginable, even though I had been fully vaccinated as a kid against all those things: chicken pox, measles both German and American, mumps, whooping cough, you name it, I got it. I was like a magnet for disease as a kid. So, you would think I would have some type of antibodies against Shingles, but I watched my father-inlaw suffer with it, so I got the shot. The one thing I never got was Pneumonia, at least never diagnosed with it. Back in those days, the doctor used to make house calls, and the antidote was “coke” syrup. Probably how I got addicted to Coca-Cola. So, when the primary care doctor said, you know you’re getting up there in age, maybe get the Pneumonia shot, I gave it some thought. Of course, no one knows how all these shots interact so after getting the Covid shot I thought let me give it some time and then I’ll get the other shots. Most pharmacies do the shots, and you don’t have to go to a doctor’s office, so I went to a local pharmacy and asked for them. The person working at the counter told me that I had to be 65 (I’m south by six months) and that the doctor’s office should administer the shots. I thought let me not argue, I’ll make an appointment with the primary care doctor. So, I call up, go through the automated phone tree directory ‘til I get a person, and make an appointment for the shots. So far, all good. When I arrived at the primary care doctor’s office, I was asked why I was there. I informed them of the appointment I made and why. I was then asked if I brought the shots with me. I looked at the receptionist in dismay,

The Rockaway Times “bring the shots?” Why do you think I came here? I was told that they don’t have the Shingles shot, normally you get that at the pharmacy. So, I replied, yes I thought so too, but they sent me here!!! Sensing that this was going south, the receptionist asked me to take a seat and that the doctor would see me shortly. When I saw the doctor (the same one who suggested I investigate the shots nine months ago) he repeated that they didn’t have the Shingle shot, but that the shot was available to anyone over 60 years of age, and I should go back to the pharmacy and tell them that. My head began to turn bright red; the primary care doctor then said that the Pneumonia shot was available only to patients over 65. He could give it to me if I wanted, but I felt at that point that God was telling me, “Lou, wait on the shots.” So, I said no, I would wait until I was 65, I wouldn’t want to be responsible for taking the last shot in case someone really needed it. Feeling bad for me, the doc asked, can I take your blood pressure? I said no, that’s ok. Then trying to salvage the appointment, he said should we take blood, we hadn’t done that in a while. All while staring at his screen with my history. I said, I was here six months ago when you took blood, and I am here next month for my annual physical. Why do you want non-fasting blood??? He said, yeah that’s true, let’s wait ‘til next month. Realizing that this whole appointment could have been avoided, if only the person taking the appointment said, “we don’t have the Shingle shot and you are not 65 yet for the Pneumonia shot,” the doc said, ok see you next month. Looking back, I realized I probably had not been paying attention at the pharmacy or the doctor’s office, and just got everything mixed up. Well, now I can look forward to a flu shot, a Covid booster shot, a Shingle shot, and a Pneumonia shot. I really should read Doc Galvin’s column more closely!!

Gestational Diabetes Gestational diabetes is diabetes that develops during pregnancy in someone who did not have diabetes prior to becoming pregnant. This can happen because the hormonal changes during pregnancy cause pregnant women to become more resistant to insulin, the hormone that keeps blood sugar levels under control. This insulin resistance results in the need for the pancreas to make more insulin, and some women cannot make enough insulin to meet that need. The prevalence of gestational diabetes in the U.S. has been estimated to be between 5.6% to 9.2% from 2007 to 2016, but

may be up to three times higher, depending on the diagnostic criteria used. Gestational diabetes typically develops in the second or third trimester. Women who have a new diagnosis of gestational diabetes in the first trimester most likely had pre-existing, undiagnosed, type II diabetes. Gestational diabetes increases the risk of preeclampsia, infants that are larger than average size (fetal macrosomia), birth injury or shoulder dystocia (a complicated type of delivery), and caesarean delivery. Screening for diabetes, especially type II, used to rely of glucose tolerance tests but

now uses Hemoglobin A1c levels to diagnose diabetes. Oddly enough, this does not work for screening for gestational diabetes as A1c levels have been found to have both low specificity and sensitivity to diagnose gestational diabetes. Therefore, screening for gestational diabetes relies on the old-fashioned oral glucose challenge or tolerance tests. This involves having the patient drink a specific amount of glucose (usually 50 g or 75 g) and then measure glucose levels at set intervals. This screening is usually performed in the second trimester between 24 and 28 weeks of gestation. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recently published their recommendation that asymptomatic pregnant women should be screened for gestational diabetes at or after 24 weeks of gestation. They also concluded that available evidence was insufficient to recommend screening before 24 weeks. This recommendation applies to women who were not previously diagnosed

The Rockaway Times with type I or II diabetes. The goal of screening is to identify and treat gestational diabetes earlier rather than later thereby lessening the risk of adverse maternal or fetal outcomes. The harms of screening are few but can include psychological stress as well as increased medical monitoring and interventions (especially during labor, delivery, and the immediate post-partum period) that come with having a diagnosis of gestational diabetes. There is also a potential risk of low blood sugar in both the mother and infant as a result of treatment, but this is uncommon. As for treatment of gestational diabetes, it includes lifestyles modifications (diet and exercise) and, in some cases, the use of insulin injections.
