Leaders Fight to Keep the Bridge Rebate in Place Earlier last month, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato and State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. fought on behalf of commuters who receive the Rockaway resident rebate for the Cross Bay Bridge, as the MTA faces financial difficulties. Both leaders submitted recorded testimony to the members of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Board during their latest meeting to address the MTA’s latest plans to cut resident rebate programs to make up for their budget deficit, and to call on the federal government to provide relief to the financially struggling authority due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Let me be clear, the Rockaway Resident Rebate cannot be cut or eliminated under any circumstance. No way, no how,” Pheffer Amato said. “Many of my constituents would face severe economic hardship due to the amount of times they have to cross that bridge to conduct their

daily lives. My constituents use the bridge to drop their kids off at school, visit their families, go to the doctor, or go to and from work. Instead of cutting the program, the federal government must step up and provide the MTA with much needed economic relief. Our region accounts for 10% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and the MTA makes sure our economy stays on track. There would be a disastrous financial impact on

my constituents, this region, and this country quite frankly if the MTA does not get the relief it needs.” “New York City cannot begin to rebound from the effects of the Coronavirus without a substantially funded and reliable MTA,” State Senator Joseph Addabbo said. “Many of my constituents rely on the MTA to get to their jobs and access different parts of the borough, such as those on the geographically isolated Rockaway Pen-

insula. My concern is that if the MTA does not get the federal funding, it may have to seriously consider raising fares on riders who are already suffering financially from the COVID-19 pandemic with hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers unemployed.” The MTA is facing historic budget deficits, and as a solution they have proposed cutting the Rockaway Resident Rebate for the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge, and the Staten Island Resident rebate for the Verrazano Bridge. The Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge is the only tolled intra-borough crossing in the entire state. The toll on the bridge originated with a ten-cent toll, and has grown to over $4 for motorists without an EZ Pass. To stave off the elimination of these programs, prevent service cuts and thousands of layoffs, and preserve the MTA’s upcoming capital plan, the MTA has requested $12 Billion in federal relief money.

New 100th Precinct Captain Provides Crime Stat Updates By Katie McFadden

At the latest 100th Precinct Community Council meeting, the precinct’s newest leader, Captain Carlos Fabara was on hand to give the latest on crime stats within the precinct. 100th Precinct Community Council President Kathy Heavey kicked off the meeting on Wednesday, September 30 by wishing outgoing Captain Louron Hall good luck on his new assignment as Commanding Officer of the 104th Precinct and welcomed Captain Fabara on board at the 100th Precinct’s newest Commanding Officer. As the meeting was ahead of what would be the rescheduled National Night Out Against Crime, Heavey announced that the council decided to cancel the event out of an abundance of caution and to not risk the health of the community and precinct personnel due to the recent increase in coronavirus cases. A lot of preparation had gone into making the event possible, for which Heavey thanked her fellow

board members and community affairs officers. She welcomed all to next year’s National Night Out, expected in August 2021. Heavey announced others joining in on the meeting including members of the Queens District Attorney’s office; Kathleen Williams, Director of Community Engagement and Dan Brown, a familiar face in Rockaway, who is now Special Assistant to Queens DA Melinda Katz, working in the Community Engagement Unit of the DA’s office. Brown announced that the DA’s office is addressing local gun issues and areas of concern on the peninsula. He asked that people reach out to the DA’s Community Engagement Unit with any concerns and to let them know about events and meetings around the peninsula so they can participate. Next, the 100th Precinct Neighborhood Coordination Officers (NCO) supervisor Sgt. Sean Turner spoke about the new Youth Coordination Officer program YCO program that the NYPD is rolling out. St. Turner and the

participants are attending training for the program this week. Heavey then introduced Captain Fabara, who has 22 years on the job and is no stranger to Rockaway. “Most Commanding Officers depart from the 100th Pct at the end of their tenure with sand in their shoes, but Captain Fabara actually arrived with it already in his shoes because he grew up in Rockaway and so is quite familiar with Rockaway, which is definitely a plus,” Heavey said. Captain Fabara introduced himself and then went into crime stats over the last 28 days. Overall, crime is down seven percent in the precinct compared to the same period last year. However, robberies are up 20% and burglaries up 66%. Felony assaults are down by 21% and grand larceny auto was down 88%. Asked about a recent fatal shooting on Beach 88th Street, this incident is continuing to be investigated but Fabara is confident that an arrest will be made soon. Regarding the recent burglary at Dunkin Do-

nuts on Beach 129th Street, Fabara said that some arrests have been made and that some of the suspects were also involved in a burglary at the Beach 108th Mobil gas station. In questions, Danny Ruscillo asked if those arrested in those burglaries were residents of the St. John’s Home, to which Captain Fabara said he was unable to share that information. Sandee Doremus asked Fabara to look into an issue of double parked cars in front of the stores on Beach 88th Street. The issue of motorized vehicles on the boardwalk was brought up, which Fabara said he would look into. In response to a complaint about smoking on the boardwalk, the captain said he would relay this to the Parks Dept. At the end, President Heavey thanked all who participated in the meeting and announced that the next 100th Precinct Community Council meeting will be on Wednesday, October 28 at 7 p.m. For meeting info and access, email: vp100pctcc@gmail.com

Yankees are playing in October. But it seems like a Mets game, no one’s there. Sorry, Mets fans. Always open season to take a shot. ***** Please see our Restaurant section starting on Page 34 for some places that offer indoor dining. Many favorite places are offering specials. ***** The next Community Board meeting is Tuesday, October 13 from 7-9 p.m. The meeting will be virtual via Zoom. Please be advised that you must register by today (October 8, 4 p.m.) if you would like to address the CB in the Public Speaking segment. Email QN14@CB.NYC.GOV and include your name and (most importantly) the phone number you will be calling from. The call-in info for the meet-

ing is: ZOOM: 646-558-8656. Appointments are preferred. You can make one by visiting NYCB. org or calling 516-487-5023. ***** Edgemere and Far Rockaway made the news this week and not in a good way. Both areas were cited as Covid-19 spike areas and schools and nonessential businesses (including indoor dining places) were ordered shut by the Mayor. Of course, the Governor might change things at any time. The 11691 zip code was among eight others that faced similar restrictions. ***** Speaking of spikes, The White House has more coronavirus cases than New Zealand, Taiwan, and Vietnam combined. The numbers are so bad the president of China

is calling it The White House Virus. That’s his joke, not ours. ***** The Army Corps of Engineers tells us rocks for the groins (aka jetties) are piling up from Beach 19th through Beach 32nd for the work that will begin soon. In fact, they “should be slinging stone by the end of the week.” Work on the west end is slated to begin in early 2021. Where workers and trucks and temporary work stations will set up is still to be determined. ***** The Parks Department is still “evaluating responses” to the bids put in by various groups to run the boardwalk concessions next year and beyond. Parks is expected to make a call by the end of the year. ***** On the Riis Park concessions front: The National Park Service (NPS) is seeking a Lessee “to provide high quality food and beverage services. Operation should have character,

The Rockaway Times offer a menu and service level that is its own quality destination within the park, attracts diverse beach goers, and better serves the surrounding community.” The deadline for proposals is November 6. For more info go to nps.gov/gate/ getinvolved/riis-park-rfp.htm ***** Speaking of Riis, Gateway Wants Your Feedback. NPS is proposing to increase parking fees beginning in 2021 at Jacob Riis Park in order to maintain and improve visitor services. They’re looking to double the cost of parking from $10 to $20. Most people from Rockaway don’t need to park there but that doesn’t mean it won’t affect the area. With the high cost of parking, you can bet some drivers will seek creative, alternative parking spots. According to NPS, “Your opinion is important to the National Park Service. Please provide your feedback about this proposal.” The comment period will run through Oct. 16, 2020. Email: Gateway_Feedback@nps.gov.

Local Pols Demand New EIS for Arverne East On Monday, October 5, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato and State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. sent a letter to Mayor Bill de Blasio, and City Planning Director, Marisa Lago calling for a new Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to be conducted for the Arverne East proposed development within the Arverne Urban Renewal Area. The current EIS was conducted in the early-2000s and does not account for numerous factors including major weather events, the COVID-19 pandemic, and demographic trends that have changed over time. “There are a lot of great aspects to this development, but the reality is there has not been a comprehensive EIS done for Arverne East since George Bush was President. A lot has changed in our community since then that needs to be considered,” Pheffer Amato said. “Major weather events, population growth, commercial and retail trends, edu-

cation needs, and a global pandemic are just a few of the factors that were not considered in the last EIS. A development this large needs to be done responsibly; a current EIS will better states the needs of our community and we deserve that.” “Due to several major changes and events over the last 17 years, I believe it is imperative that a new EIS is conducted for the proposed Arverne East Development, as well as a full re-evaluation of the commercial program before any projects begin,” Senator Addabbo said. The Arverne East Development is within the Arverne Urban Renewal Area, overseen by the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD). The plan calls for thousands of units of housing, 150,000 SF of community retail and restaurant space, and a nature preserve over the 81 acres of city-owned land that has been vacant for decades.

Far Rock Put on Lockdown Again After Covid-19 Uptick By Katie McFadden

After an increase in positive coronavirus cases, Far Rockaway’s 11691 is among nine New York City zip codes now facing tighter restrictions again. After a confusing back and forth between Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio over the course of the week, it was ultimately decided that schools and nonessential businesses in these areas have to close back down. As Far Rockaway’s rate of positive coronavirus tests reached over the 3% threshold last week, along with several other areas across Queens and Brooklyn, New York’s leaders started discussing courses of action to help bring the numbers back down. Mayor de Blasio proposed closing schools in these areas starting Wednesday, as well as nonessential businesses. Governor Cuomo agreed to the public and private school closures, but bumped them up a day to Tuesday, October 6, while the issue of businesses remained up in the air. Late Tuesday afternoon, Governor Cuomo provided more clarification on the move, expanding the zones beyond the borders of zip codes and color coding guidelines on restrictions for these areas. According to a map provided by the governor’s office, a large portion of Far Rockaway, from Bayswater Park to Beach 2nd Street, falls within the Red Zone, calling for the strictest measures. In the Red Zone, houses of worship can only reach 25% capacity with a 10-person maximum. Mass gatherings are prohibited. Only essential businesses can remain open—including supermarkets, grocery stores, delis/bodegas, restaurants, medical services, pharmacies, banking institutions/ financial centers, and communications (mobile phone), pet stores, wine and spirits/liquor

stores. Restaurants in these areas must revert back to takeout only rather than offering indoor and outdoor dining. Some parts of this area in Far Rockaway fall within the Orange Zone. This means houses of worship can be at 33% capacity or a 25-person maximum. There is a 10-person maximum for gatherings. Outdoor dining is allowed with a maximum of four people per table. Other areas fall within the Yellow Zone, which includes 50% capacity for houses of worship, 25 people maximum at gatherings, businesses can be open, indoor and outdoor dining is permitted and schools can be open but with weekly testing of students and staff for in-person instruction. (Find your Zone: NYC.Gov/COVIDZone) After initially calling for the closure of nonessential businesses to take place on Wednesday, with Cuomo’s recommendations in play, de Blasio said the closures would begin Thursday, October 8. Businesses that are deemed nonessential include hair salons, nail salons, barber shops, clothing stores, furniture stores, flower shops, party goods stores, recreational facilities/ gyms. Further guidance and outreach will be done to advise business owners of their requirements. Several

businesses around Mott Avenue and Cornaga Avenue will be impacted. During a press conference on Wednesday, Mayor de Blasio said, “I feel tremendous empathy for small business owners who will have their businesses closed. But let’s realize that if we act quickly and decisively, we can overcome this for all of us, for the whole city.” The Rockaway Development & Revitalization Corporation is extending help to businesses that may be impacted by these new restrictions. Kevin Alexander, President and CEO, said, “In response to the Governor’s Initiative, RDRC will be providing a special edition of its Rockaways Essential Business Guide, Far Rockaway/Edgemere Edition, assisting Far Rockaway businesses with establishing a digital marketing presence to connect with customers, providing businesses with additional PPE supplies for employees, and preparing applications for future COVID-19 grant and loan programs.” To learn more about how RDRC can assist your business email: ehelpdesk@ rdrc.org or call Victoria Stukes at 718.327.5300 extension 318. In addition to shutdowns and restrictions, people in these hotspot areas will be subject to

strict enforcement including heavy fines for violating rules. The host of mass gatherings will be fined up to $15,000 per day. Those not wearing face coverings where required may face $1,000 fines. These restrictions will be in place for a minimum of 14 days and will be dependent upon positive case numbers falling below 3% consistently for a week. As we go to press, these numbers are already showing improvement. On Wednesday, Governor Cuomo’s office released a chart indicating the positivity rate over the past few days. While 11691 saw a 3.4% seven-day average, on Monday, October 5, there were 4.5% positive cases and on Tuesday, October 6, that number was down to 4.0%. Not often discussed among the positivity rate is the recent coronavirus death rate. According to data gathered by Robby Schwach of Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office, the number of new deaths has stayed low in recent weeks. In 11691, over the past month, the number of deaths increased by three from 374 to 377. In 11692, one person died over the past month for a total of 94. In 11693, there have been no new deaths over the past month and the total remains at 29. In 11694, there have been no new deaths and the total remains at 90. In 11697, there has been one new death and the total is at five. In order to get a clearer idea of how these hotspot zones are faring, officials encourage all to get tested. There are several free testing spots across the peninsula, especially around the 11691 zip code. Rockaway’s free testing sites include Beach 39th (39-20 Rockaway Beach Blvd), open daily, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sorrentino Recreation Center (1848 Cornaga Ave, open daily 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and a temporary testing spot has been set up on the boardwalk near Beach 9th Street, providing walk-in service from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Blessing Rockaway’s Animals

Sunday, October 4 marked the feast of St. Francis of Assissi, and what better way to celebrate the patron saint of animals than by giving them a blessing. Pet parents across the peninsula brought out their four-legged friends for the annual Blessing of the Animals. From St. Thomas More in

Breezy to St. Rose of Lima and St. Francis de Sales, there were so many animals waiting for blessings you’d think Noah was preparing another ark. As Father Bill Sweeney at the St. Francis Prayer Garden put it, “This event has gone to the dogs!” But even cats, bunnies and turtles got a splash of holy water on Saturday.

Can’t Catch A Break

Mail Delay Dear Editor: A very disturbing thing just happened at the 11693 Post Office. I picked up the mail at my mailbox and I found: two bills from Capital One for August and September, two bills from Spectrum for August and September and two bank statements from Citibank for August and September. I have had this PO box for 30 years and this has never happened before, but what does it say about the timeliness of mailed ballots in November? Vince Castellano

Dear Editor: It’s like taking candy away from a baby. Just as we get indoor dining back to some extent, just as our schools are allowed to reopen, just as people can return to houses of worship, Cuomo and de Blasio rip it away again. And with no evidence that any of these things are causing the rise in coronavirus cases! They place limits on the 11691 zip code, but what do they think is going to happen? All of those from 11691 will go everywhere else on the peninsula or to Long Island! I get the concern over the increase in cases, but this response just makes no sense and it’s doing more harm than good for the livelihoods of the people of Far Rockaway. We need some real leaders! Adam Bloom Call A Headache Dear Editor: I am sending you this letter to relay a concern that I have

about Call A Head in Broad Channel. I pass there on the way to work twice a week. They continually block traffic on Crossbay Blvd. and as you know there is only one route in Broad Channel. Their drivers speed, cut you off, double and sometimes triple park and I am not sure but either caused or partially caused a major accident a few months back. I was stuck in Broad Channel until they cleared the mess which caused me to be late to work. They are an expanding business in a property that is way too small to house their trucks. I am tired of navigating through that mess and I have had a few near misses because their drivers unconscionable driving behavior. I am sure that I am not the only one who has noticed this. Could you please look into it? Roberta Alessandro

Page 13 praising Governor Cuomo’s response to the Covid-19 virus, saying his actions saved countless lives? And we had one of the lowest infections and death rates in the country. I say Cuomo has blood on his hands. A few years ago he signed a bill authorizing late term abortions. New York State has had one of the highest amounts of Covid-19 rate and deaths. He ordered Covid-19 patients be put into nursing homes, causing thousands of nursing home residents to die. When asked about this, he blames Trump. NY State has lost 2 million residents in the last 10 years and it has the distinction of having the lowest economic output of all 50 states along with the highest taxes. God help us. James Murray

Birthday Shoutout Dear Editor: Not sure how I got in there No Cuomo today (9/24), but thank you Dear Editor: so much for making my day! A recent letter to your paper Barbara Serena

St. John’s Hospital Achieves A First St. John’s Episcopal Hospital has received the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus and Heart Failure Gold Plus Quality Achievement Awards, and is recognized for high performance in heart failure and COPD by US News & World Report. The hospital attained the awards as a result of its commitment to ensuring that patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines founded in the latest scientific evidence. This is the first year in which the hospital has attained the Heart Failure Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, and has ranked as High Performing in COPD by US News & World Report. It is the fourth consecutive year in which the hospital has attained the Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.

Page 15

Gang Member Indicted on Attempted Murder

Karen Gleason, Chief Quality Officer said. “Attaining these prestigious awards is reflective of the tireless efforts and commitment of St. John’s team members.” The hospital’s focus on heart failure and stroke is particularly important, as heart disease is the leading cause of premature death in the Rockaways, and stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States, and the leading cause of adult disability in the country. On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, with almost 795,000 people suffering a new or recurrent stroke every year. And, more than 6.5 million adults in the United States are living with heart failure. Many heart failure patients can lead a full, enjoyable life when their condition is managed with proper medications or devices, and with healthy lifestyle changes.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that Otis Moore, 32, a reputed member of the Redfern Rowdy Gang, has been arraigned on an indictment charging the defendant with attempted murder and other crimes for a gang-related May 17, 2020 shooting in the Dix McBride Apartments, also referred to as Pinkfern in Far Rockaway. District Attorney Katz said, “The alleged shooter in this case is in custody and will be held accountable.” Moore, of Central Avenue in Far Rockaway, was arraigned on a 5-count indictment before Queens Supreme Court Justice John Zoll. The defendant is charged with attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the second and third degree. Justice Zoll ordered the defendant held without bail and to return to court on October 26,

2020. If convicted, the defendant faces up to life in prison, as a mandatory persistent felon. According to the charges, on May 17, 2020, between 11:40 pm and 11:45 p.m., the 20-year-old victim was leaving a residence at 22-37 Dix Ave., when Moore was observed standing partially inside the neighboring building with a silver firearm. As the victim began to exit the building, he heard gunshots and was struck by gunfire. Video surveillance from the location allegedly depicts defendant Moore with a silver firearm, pointing it in the direction of the victim and firing multiple shots striking him in the leg. The investigation was conducted by Detective Joseph Zappia and Detective Andrew Solomon of the New York City Police Department’s 101st Precinct Detective Squad, under the supervision of Sergeant Cortney Cummings.

St. Edmund Prep Returns with Hybrid Learning Model St. Edmund Preparatory High School returned to the halls of 2474 Ocean Avenue as the 2020-2021 school year began for all students on September 14. St. Edmund Prep has enacted a plan to open this September with a hybrid model. Each day, some students will be in the building face to face while other students are at home. This plan was created first and foremost with the health and safety of all members of the school community in mind, while responding to the feedback of its families. The physical limitations of the school building presented some interesting challenges to the 25-member re-opening task force. The hybrid model allows students to socially distance and responsibly return to in-person learning. During the COVID-19 shut down of schools, St. Edmund Prep leveraged the integration of the Google G-Suite and its 1:1 Chromebook program to seamlessly move to complete remote learning. Additional technolo-

gy upgrades in the classrooms have allowed for all lessons to be synchronous, which means that the students at home will be taking part in the same live lesson happening with their class in the school building. In a letter to the school community, Principal Allison McGinnis said “The SEP Re-Opening Plan is very thorough and detailed. Our students will be receiving an education that fosters bold learning and uncommon lead-

ers. Resuming extracurricular activities will allow students to express themselves in a way that has been lacking these past six months. Combining responsible health and safety precautions with rigorous academics will allow us to continue to provide opportunities for our students to grow academically, socially, and religiously as it remains our priority to live out our mission.” We are confident that this plan will enable St. Edmund Prep to

continue to form the innovative, compassionate, moral leaders our world needs in the face of the ever changing educational landscape of the 21st Century. Fontbonne Hall— The Lab School Fontbonne Hall in Bay Ridge recently announced some very exciting news. After almost 18 months of research, discussion and planning, Fontbonne Hall has launched a new website, logo, and tagline. The all-girls high school launched this new campaign not to change who they are but to make it known, without a doubt, what they teach, how their students learn, and what type of young women graduate from their school. Fontbonne Hall’s new site will feature the headline, The Lab School for Girls. Like Academy or Country Day, a Laboratory School (or ‘Lab School’ for short) is a category of school. These schools always used to be part of a university. That is no longer the case. Today, Lab Schools prioritize innovation in Teaching and Learning. “As The Lab School for Girls, we are in the forefront of innovations in Teaching and Learning across all disciplines. We are not

just for future scientists, doctors, or engineers. We are for all students who are expansive thinkers, creative problem solvers, and potential pioneers. Unique in education, we continually evolve our curricula and our methods to keep pace with the unprecedented rate of change in the world where women will need to thrive and succeed.” FH is also introducing the new tagline: She Can. She Can. is a challenge and a promise to every 9th Grade girl who walks through their gate and every young woman who walks out of it four years later with a hardearned diploma. “I am so excited to have a website and messaging that clearly describes the innovative teaching and learning that goes on every day at Fontbonne. It is also great to reintroduce colors and a You’re not 40, you’re 39.95—plus shipping and handling. On logo that are so intimately connected to the school’s history,” October 8, John McFadden celebrates a momentous occasion. said Principal Mary Ann Spici- To a hard working husband, dad, brother, son and friend to many—Happy birthday! jaric.

SLICE OF LIFE By Beth Hanning Mail’s Not What It Used To Be Over the past few years, I have noticed a decline in the delivery of the mail. However, when we were kids on Beach 117th Street, someone could probably address a postcard with just my first name and possibly an incorrect address and it would arrive at 212D Beach 117th Street because Marty the mailman would know it was for me. Even the Broad Channel mailman understood the humor of his locals when Uncle Joe from California sent a Christmas card to my in-laws with the name addressed as “George and Mary Bailey the Richest Family in Town.” We

were so friendly with Marty the mailman, I remember him sitting down and my mother offering him water on a hot summer day. I was young and running around but my parents occasionally sat and spoke with Marty. He always knew our names and said hello as he walked by with his mail cart. Many of us have a fond memory of a mailman who was a staple for many years. Some young children in our town have even dressed up as their mailman because he was such a staple and a part of the young child’s day. When I first moved to Newport Avenue, I

had the same mail carrier for many years. He informed me he was leaving for a smaller route and since then, I have not had a steady mail carrier that I know of. Since then, I have become an amateur mail carrier. I have delivered small parcels to the building on Memorial Circle and delivered mail to many of my neighbors. My favorite is the many deliveries I have brought to the house on Beach Channel Drive, which does have the same house number, but we are on different streets. About a month ago, I received a package that I knew had checks from the bank. I knew I did not order checks so I checked the address immediately. Yup, it was for my friends with the same house number on Beach Channel Drive. I wished I had placed a post-it on it with a note because I never tell them I am substituting for the mailman and delivering their package and that their checks could have been lost forever! I have received many credits from Amazon in the last

Page 21 few months and it makes me wonder, did my Beach Channel Drive friends receive my package and just either threw it away or maybe it went to another random address? So imagine my surprise when last week’s leading news story as I got ready for work was about absentee ballots being delivered to the wrong people. The woman interviewed was “shocked” that the ballots were going to the wrong houses. Allegedly, there have been many stories like this but I just could not believe that only one borough away from me people could not believe that the mail carriers could make mistakes! Wow, these people are lucky that they have never had trouble with their mail! For those of you who think mail-in ballots are okay, tell me: Would you mail in a million-dollar lottery ticket or would you drive to the lotto offices? (I know servicemen and students have used absentee ballots and that is different from mass mail-in ballots.)

Simplicity is Key Finding the inspiration to write this column doesn’t always come so easy to me. In fact, if it doesn’t come to me naturally, it is impossible for me to create the column. Since we live by the ocean, I often find my inspiration from nature and the amazing world we live in. Finding the beauty in any moment and place is something that always inspires me. The ability to do this can really save us and brings us out of darkness in these very difficult times. Today I am grateful for the sun, waves and family.

Anne Frank said, “Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy.” If Anne Frank could find beauty, then certainly we can find it. We are all challenged, so perhaps finding balance in our lives will help open the lids of our eyes to the magnificence around us. Quieting the brain and letting go of the chaos we are exposed to on a daily basis allows us to see the beauty we are surrounded by. Turn off the news, tune out of the craziness and nonsense and tune into the beauty. Sim-

Page 25

plicity is key to survival. Nature and a relationship with another human being helps to remind us how blessed we truly are. Close your eyes and find your seat. Connect to your stability below you, around you and the magnificent earth. Spine long, find your beautiful breath. Entering the noise, filling the belly, expanding through the body. Sweep out that which doesn’t serve you. Square breathing, inhale to count of four, hold breath for four, exhale four, hold breath out for four. If this count doesn’t work for you, then change the count. This breath brings you balance and stability. Sometimes, the first couple of tries will be challenging so stick with it. Eventually, you begin to calm the nervous system and decrease stress, bringing you deeper into your body. Notice the sensations you begin to feel. Holding the breath can shift your perspective, it can help us recognize our own capacity to expand. This breath can teach us we can expand past whatever is troubling you.

The window you create with the breath gets cleared through the lens of your eyes. Only beauty can enter this square. What do you see? How does beauty make you feel? How does seeing beauty impact the rest of your sensors? Breathe into the beauty within yourself. You are peace, you are beauty, you are simply divine. When you find beauty within, you begin to see it all around you. Tuning into the beauty within, always there, you are simply tapping into it. Connecting to the energy within. Things that inspire me and make me happy: full moon, morning light, waves of the ocean, my family, and our community at Ocean Bliss Yoga. Connecting to the heart, you begin to expand into that beautiful space. Perhaps peeling away the layers of protection that you no longer need. Take time to slow down and see what is right in front of you. Life is a gift. We are here to live in now, fully and completely. Be well, be happy and live in the beauty.

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Small Practices At Risk Restaurants and retailers aren’t the only small businesses that have taken a severe financial blow from COVID-19. Physicians in small practices around the country have reported steep declines in revenue, drops so significant that some of them and their supporters have resorted to GoFundMe – ironically the platform best-known for helping patients pay their medical bills – to raise funds to help pay their overhead. Telemedicine has been of minimal financial help to small practices. Tenants have had evictions stayed and rents suspended (how the landlord then pays their bills I don’t know) but physicians still have to pay all their

bills including, in some cases, tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in malpractice premiums, especially here in NY where malpractice premiums are among the highest in the country. A few weeks into the pandemic, the Medical Group Management Association found that COVID-19 had a negative financial effect on 97% of the nearly 800 practices it surveyed. In May, the Texas Medical Association found that 68% of practicing physicians had cut their work hours and 62% had their salaries reduced. Many practices had to furlough employees as practice volumes fell to 20 or 30% of normal. Patients, especially those at high risk

from this virus, stayed away from doctors and hospitals in droves. Many patients had the mistaken impression that doctor’s offices were swamped with sick patients when in fact the opposite was true. Many physicians report that despite restrictions being lifted, their practice volumes have remained below prepandemic levels and are likely to stay there at least as long as social distancing is required. Although people packed beaches and boardwalks after restrictions were lifted and Black Lives Matter demonstrators flooded city streets and parks, many people, often older and in poorer health, remained reluctant to visit physician offices. As Ateev Mehrotra, MD, a researcher at Harvard Medical School and hospitalist at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital said, “As a country, we did a very good job of explaining that there was this sudden, horrible virus going around.” But that message had unintended consequences, he added. He said “We got people scared of going to the doctor’s office or the hospital. They would rather die at home than get exposed to the virus.” Unfortunately, that is what many people did as non-COV-

The Rockaway Times ID-19-related deaths spiked across the country (a fact sadly lost in all the COVID media hype). Experts predicted that the pandemic would accelerate the closure of many small practices, and that is exactly what has happened. With many of these practices, more than 40% of revenue goes directly to pay overhead expenses, so when volume and revenue drop precipitously, it is no longer possible to keep the doors open. That is what happened to me, causing me to opt for retirement rather than stick around losing money while waiting for a vaccine to improve the situation. Only a handful of doctors make huge amounts of money, for example cardiothoracic surgeons. Most make enough to live comfortably but are by no means wealthy. Most doctors I know entered the medical field to help humanity, not to become rich. Doctors no longer top the list of top income earners. Attorneys now top that list, and doctors are way down on that list. Anyone thinking of a medical career would be wise to consider that. As for me, I have no regrets. DEALING WITH OLD FRIENDS Dear Enchantress, My girlfriends are so different than me. How do I stay friends with them? I am getting more and more spiritual. I feel like I need to these days. And they are getting more and more gossipy and judging everyone. I have tried to tell them to stop, or I just don’t say anything, and then they poke at me and ask my why I’m so quiet. It’s really frustrating. I’ve been going to different kinds of meetings on Zoom, and I’m seeing there are so many ways to feel better, to be less anxious. I know you are all full-on spiritual, and I’m wondering, were you always this way? How did you tell your friends? Did you make

new friends? I need help and I don’t want to lose my friends. I have been with this group of friends since kindergarten, basically forever and I’m in my early 30s. Dear Friendless Fanny, Oh, I hear you. This is an excellent question, and I’m so glad you’re asking me, as well as asking what to do. No, I was definitely not always spiritual. I think I always saw things differently, and I always had “weird” thoughts and was extremely sensitive. I was just never taught it’s ok to have all that, nor what to do with it. So, at 32 I went to a new class with all new

Page 27

people, from all new places. And I suddenly felt triggered with all my old friends, like they were all wrong, and living life wrong, and I thought it was my mission to convert everyone to consciousness. I became a love bully. I wanted everyone to come to my new class, and no one would. Everyone in my class brought their friends, but none of mine came. So I did it the most “wrong” way. I just dropped them. It’s not what I advise and I learned from my mistakes. For two years, I did nothing else social except go to this class. I stopped dinners, dating, bars, everything. And I made new friends from class, we all committed to class every week, and a new version of my life began. NOT what I recommend. What I will now say to you is more advanced than I was. Which is integration. Have separate friends. And find yourself right in spending time with your OG friends when you can accept that they are not changing, and if they

do, or if they get curious about your “new” life, they will ask. It is not your job to change them or convince them to be any other way than they are. And ask yourself tons of questions, here are some to start: 1. Why are your original friends important to you? 2. Why is it important for you to change them or to tell them to stop how they are? 3. What feelings come up when they “tease” you about being quiet? When you get strong feelings, physical feelings or sensations the best way to be is curious. Get curious about why these specific moments happen for you? Being with them when you disagree will cause body feelings and those are yours to explore. I suggest you do it in writing. I wish you all the best and congratulations on a new part of your life! Just Friends

Even a global pandemic can’t keep friends apart. For over thirty years, a group of friends from Greenpoint where I grew up, made the trek out to Montauk under the guise of a fishing trip. The trip was originally organized by one of New York’s bravest and his brother, and sadly both are no longer with us. But their spirit has guided the remaining friends over the last dec-

ade to continue the tradition. So, with masks firmly in place and more Purell than beer this year, the core ventured East. The trip originally included a smaller group of friends but once word got out, many competed for an invitation to join the adventure. In the early days, the trip was arranged around golfing, fishing, bike rides, and an occasional basketball game. But mostly, it was about old buddies sitting

around drinking beer and smoking cigars late into the night telling stories about their past athletic feats, which included no small amount of boasting, yelling, cursing and side-splitting laughter. The friends, although all from the same neighborhood went to different grammar schools, which immediately set them up as enemies in their early years. As the years went by, many realized that those guys on the other side of town weren’t so bad, and when they could share a beer at an inappropriate age, decided that they were probably alright. Some went to the same high school and even the same college. We went to each other’s weddings, kids’ parties, new houses, parents’ funerals and now grandkids’ births. As the years moved on, we lost a few along the way. There are a few who still come but move a lot slower than they once did. But that doesn’t stop the boasting. The talk these days is about replaced

The Rockaway Times hips, knees, chemo treatments. When someone made a dinner reservation for 9:30 p.m. at our favorite restaurant in Montauk, they got yelled at because that was way too late and we realized we would be sleeping by then. On one of the nights, we managed to stay up in the courtyard to almost 10:30 p.m. and were asked by another guest at the hotel why we were there. We explained that we were all childhood friends and that we had been doing this for a long time. The person asked how long, and one of us answered that some have been friends for as long as 60 years. The person was shocked, because they never heard of a group staying together so long that spent so much time telling each other how ugly, stupid and infirmed each other were. We replied, well, we’re just all friends, and friends stick together no matter what, and the friend who started this so many years ago would want us all to continue, so we do. Continued on page 29

year marred by social unrest, we caught fish, and not one or two but a lot of fish. Cruelly, due to new stripped-bass regulations, those that were under 28 inches were tossed back; but unbeknownst to us, the captain of the boat had to throw back those fish over 35 inches. The ones that we caught over 40 inches were particularly painful to see thrown back, but we were happy to see the conservation efforts pay off, because we caught a lot of fish, and we hope that future groups of friends have a place to come and fish. The return trip is always a bit sad, because it’s over, but we all leave a bit enriched by being with those who knew us when we could run fast, jump high, and make good on our individual boasts. On this particular trip, I got home to a phone call that a friend who couldn’t make the trip, wasn’t feeling well again and needed to go to the hospital. When my friend and I dropped him off at the emergency room, Since the passing of the beginning to wonder whether the admitting nurse asked: are founding friend, we have not he had cursed us. But in this you guys family; we both ancaught a single fish. We were very bizarre global pandemic swered: no, just friends.

Serves: 6 Ingredients: • 1 frozen turkey breast, (NOT THAWED) bone–in (about 5 pounds) or boneless (about 3 pounds) • 1-16 ounce can cranberry sauce • 1 envelope dry onion soup mix Directions: For bone-in turkey, put all the ingredients into a 5-6 quart crockpot, cover, and cook on high for two hours. This helps the meat get through the danger zone of 140F more quickly. Then reduce the heat to low and continue cooking the turkey for 4-5 hours or until the turkey regis-

ters 165F on an instant-read meat thermometer. If you’re cooking a boneless turkey, follow the instructions above. But when you reduce the crockpot heat to low, start checking the turkey after 1-2 hours. It may only need that much time to reach 165F. Slice the turkey breast and serve with the sauce that forms in the slow cooker. As simple as this recipe is, you can change it to suit your own tastes. Think about using different types of fruit sauces in this super easy Three Ingredient Crockpot Turkey entrée recipe. You could use mango chutney instead of cranberry sauce, or try a combination of crushed pineapple jam. Use your own homemade onion soup mix for better flavor and much less sodium.

It’s a bit of mystery where John Cori is rocking one of the new Rockaway Times T-shirts, a limited edition long-sleeved one at that. He sent an email with the message: As Promised. We know he’s somewhere between Arizona and Colorado! We’re guessing he’s in Utah and we’re wondering if he knows he’s being photobombed by two people on his left side. Oh, that’s a big rock!

Wrestle Talk

WRESTLING INJURIES Results from the NXT 31 Takeover Pay-Per-View on October 4, 2020 from the WWE Performance Center in Orlando Florida. • Damien Priest defeated Johnny Gargano • Kushida defeated Velveteen Dream • Santos Escobar defeated Isaiah Scott • Io Sharia defeated Candice LaRae • Finn Balor defeated Kyle O’Reilly The Match of the Night was between Finn Balor versus Kyle O’Reilly. These two took Shoot Wrestling to another level with hard-hitting strikes and kicks. This matchup lived up to the hype. Although, I would have liked to have seen Kyle O’Reilly win, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing them both wrestle again. In today’s edition we’re going to talk about an important top-

ic, “Wrestling Injuries.” Eventually, in a wrestler’s career, he or she will encounter an injury. This could be a minor injury like a pulled muscle or sprained ankle/wrist to a major injury like a torn ligaments/broken bones. The fact of the matter is injuries are a part of life for a professional wrestler and we deal with them on a daily basis. The majority of times, wrestlers still compete while suffering with some form of an injury and you’re probably asking why? To be injured in the wrestling world means the potential loss of income, losing a spot on a storyline and possible future bookings. To admit that you’re injured is almost “taboo”

in the wrestling world, so most wrestlers tend to keep quiet and continue working while they are injured. Unless, you are signed to a major wrestling promotion majority of wrestlers are working without healthcare insurance and any time spent tending to an injury means loss of income and paying for medical bills. The worst injury for a wrestler is the type that ends their career. This is never easy to handle and it’s an unfortunate fact that lingers in a wrestler’s head that he or she will never wrestle again. Like all athletes in sports, a career-ending injury is a punishing blow. Some wrestlers are able to take out insurance policies to cover those injuries, but the majority can’t and most fall back on prior education and job skills they had acquired before joining the wrestling profession. Whatever type of injury a wrestler might face during his/ her career, all wrestlers train very

hard to work safe and avoid injuries as much as possible. We never like to see anyone injured because we as wrestlers know the outcomes of a potential injury are never favorable. The question of the week comes from Edgar G. in Far Rockaway and he asked, “What are your thoughts on Ring of Honor Wrestling?” I have always been a Ring of Honor fan since when the promotion started and many of today’s well-known wrestling stars came from or passed through ROH. My only frustration with the company is its inability to further grow into a national brand. I feel that the promotion has grown stagnant and needs to be featured more predominantly by its owners on their television network. Keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com. You can follow me on Facebook @ ericjayden and on Twitter @followthebadguy. Have a great week!
