Build it Back to Finish in Late 2016 On the anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, Mayor Bill de Blasio held a press conference in a Sandy-impacted area of Staten Island to announce that the city is committed to completing the Build it Back single-family home program by the end of 2016. Mayor de Blasio announced that 100 percent of reimbursement checks have been sent out to homeowners. This amount to 5,319 checks to those who were eligible, totally nearly $104 million. Additionally, the project had started construction on 2,015 homes, which includes 1,217 completions. Altogether, 63 percent of the eligible candidates in the pool of applicants have received a check or have seen construction. “Last year, we were fixing Build it Back – and now we’re finishing it, committing to completing the program and getting families home by

the end of next year, Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “While there has been major progress since our overhaul – including 100 percent of reimbursement checks now out to homeowners – we won’t stop pushing forward until every applicant sees relief. Even as we work to get every family home, we are also aggressively moving to address the risks of climate change. We’re already safer today than we were three years ago, and we will continue to implement our comprehensive $20 billion resiliency plan across the five boroughs. The mayor also said that approximately 800 residents from Sandyimpacted neighborhoods were hired though Sandy Recovery Workforce1 and others have undergone training opportunities for union construction jobs. “When I heard about the pre-

apprenticeship I was looking for another job, Lamont Bryan, Laborers Local 79, graduate of Edward J. Malloy Initiative for Construction Skills and a Far Rockaway resident, said. “I wasn’t expecting to get a career out of it. Now I’m a member of the laborers union and I am grateful for having gone through the Construction Skills program. It helped give me the training and the mindset needed to succeed in the construction industry. Businesses have also seen some support. Last year, the Department for Small Business Services turned around the Hurricane Sandy Business Loan and Grant Program to focus on awarding grants, make guidelines more flexible, and increase disbursements. SBS has awarded more than $54 million in support to nearly 350 businesses across the city.

PA Approves JFK Runway Plan The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is moving forward with its plan to modernize John F. Kennedy Airport by upgrading its runways. Runway 4Right-22Left is responsible for nearly 50 percent of planes, accounting for 95,000 planes in 2014, that land at the airport yet has not been majorly renovated since

2001. The PA appoved $125 million to repave the asphalt on the runway and establish a new high-speed taxiway which has the goal of reducing airport delays. The agency said that the project will create over 600 jobs. “With over 53 million passengers in 2014, JFK is the busiest international airport in the country, Vice

Chairman Scott Rechler said. “These investments will help reduce ground delays at the airport, as well provide for critical safety and state of good repair projects that are essential to maintaining JFK’s role as the gateway to the United States and the region. The runway will be the third one to receive major repairs at JFK since 2010.

Protect your world Auto Home Life Retirement By Kevin Boyle

There’s a long list of things Rockaway is short on and famous people is one of them. In the old days, the really old days, we’re told, the rich and famous came to Rockaway. A lot of them summered here; some built homes here. But by the 1970s Rockaway had become Rot-away and the best we could boast was Abe Beame. Even Abe barely registered. He was such a low-wattage celeb he was sworn in to become mayor in his Belle Harbor kitchen. True story. Yes, a decent amount of rich and famous people started here but they became rich or famous or both after hightailing it out of Rockaway. Richard Feynman, Dr. Joyce Brothers, Nancy Lieberman, Carl Icahn, and good old Bernie Madoff are some names that come to mind. Rockaway’s so comfortable you can’t expect genius to flourish. I could go work on some nuclear physics equations or I can go to the beach. I should really work or study harder but it’s nice up on the boardwalk, I’ll take a walk instead. So, there’s famous. Donald Trump, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Beyonce famous. And there’s Rockaway famous. People only famous in our little backwater. I’m not gonna draw the distinction between famous and infamous. When I say Lew Simon is famous, you can decide if he’s famous or infamous. Though in recent years he’s become less of each. The red bullhorn hasn’t been seen as much. Phil Goldfeder might be the most Rockaway famous person right now. People might call him Phil WhatsHisName or Goldfinger but a lot of us know who he is (though much to his dismay has never been on our front page). It’s almost not fair to consider politicians famous because getting known is part of their job. But some politicians, like Assemblywoman Michelle Titus (also known as Missing Absent-titus)

might as well be in the Witness Protection program. She’s almost famous for not being famous. Office holders have a degree of celebrity while in office. But Al Stabile’s recent passing shows that fame is fleeting (quick pause: when else do you get to use the word fleeting?). Big Al was a big presence in Rockaway in the 1990s but with so many newcomers and young adults who were just kids when Al held office here, the reaction to the news of his passing was subdued. Singer and artist Patti Smith, a definite notch above Abe Beame, calls Rockaway home but she’s on tour a lot so she’s probably more famous outside Rockaway than in it. Mary Norris, Mac DeMarco, Andrew VanWyngarden, and Klaus Biesenbach are notable names who hang their hats here but they’re also better known off the beach. Actor James Franco and walking rainbow Ms. Columbia (you know, the guy with the orange or sometimes green beard) are here a lot but don’t get mail here. Former editor of The Wave and publisher of OnRockaway.com Howie Schwach is kinda famous but half the people who recognize his name mispronounce it as well. I’ve heard it said Schwash, Swatch and Swock. It rhymes with Shock. But throw in the SHW sound so you get Shwock. John Cori is kinda famous. He writes a column for the Rockaway Times and his name was in the title of a documentary. That’s pretty good. Rick Horan, aka Citizen Rick, is famous for riding about town on a recumbent bike. Geoff Rawling, Whalemena artist and captain of the Dragon Boat, would be a boldface name if we had a celebrity column. But this is Rockaway. We could only run a celebrity column once every four or five years. Who knows, maybe the famous (like the ferry) will return, just like the old days. Until then, we’re just like the Hamptons -- in the dead of winter.

***** If you’re an Internet person you might have come across two very different videos involving Rockaway recently. One was a time-lapse video chronicling three years of the post-Sandy clean-up and rehab on Beach 92nd Street. It was fascinating. The other video was appalling. A woman, who we have to assume was under the influence of something mind-altering, was first seen shaking her rear end and then going about tearing apart the mini-mart in a gas station on Beach 40th Street. She was filmed by a customer more interested in the theater than in calling the cops. ***** So there’s this big donation jar, really big, in Cuisine by Claudette’s on Beach 116th. Funds collected will eventually go to an outfit called Redemption Rescues, a non-profit which “rescues, rehabilitates, trains and adopts out unwanted and abandoned animals. Throw a buck in next time you’re in and tell Claudette your guess how much is in the jar. We bet the guesses will be all over the place. ***** Hey, any St. John’s basketball fans out there? It should be an exciting season with new coach Chris Mullin. We’ll have four tickets to give away for every home game. Sometimes we’ll raffle them off or maybe have Word Search challenges. In the meantime, send us an email (mail@rockawaytimes.com) and let us know you’d be interested and we’ll just put you on the list. ***** Hundreds of abandoned boats litter New York waterways. Part of the problem is that no agency is in charge of hauling them out. The Coast Guard and The Army Corps remove boats that pose navigational or environmental risks but many near the shoreline remain untouched. After receiving a $2milllion grant, The City is taking steps to tackle the challenge. They’ve hired a company and streamlined some of the red tape. Here’s hoping some boat graveyards around here will get a clean up. The City’s initiative reminds us that an entire crane that must rise 70 feet in the air still sits in the basin at Beach 74th Street and Amstel Blvd after falling in the water a few years ago.

Well, that was a sports Sunday to forget. The Mets lost the deciding game in the World Series. The Giants somehow scored 48 points and lost and the Jets lost to the Raiders. Ugh. ***** Congressman Gregory Meeks announced last week that he had suffered a “mild heart attack. The 62-year-old rep had missed high profile votes on the budget deal and new Speaker. After being rushed to the hospital, he released a statement: “My doctors informed me that I had a blocked artery which caused a mild heart attack. The doctors successfully placed a stent in my artery to clear it. “ He is expected to return to work shortly. ***** Congratulations to Team Kevin and other locals who ran in the New York City Marathon. Anthony Morales and Kevin Quinn both finished in under three hours. We’re equally impressed by those who ran for five or six hours. That’s a long time to be running! ***** There’s sad news to report. Noni Signoretti, who many knew from Brown’s Hardware store (she knew where everything was and what you needed), passed away last week. She had most recently been living in California. And retired firefighter and dear friend to many, Kenny Courtney, died suddenly on Monday. Our sincerest condolences to the families. A wake will take place at O’Connor’s today (Thursday) from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass is Friday, 10:45 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales. ***** Next Wednesday is Veterans Day and the next day is the anniversary of the crash of Flight 587. ***** Speaking of veterans there is a national effort called “Greenlight A Vet that is taking hold here. Organizers ask that you swap out a light bulb at your home to a green one to show support for the men and women who serve our country. A local guy who prefers to keep his name out of the paper dropped off a couple of green light bulbs at the Rockaway Times booth this week. So if you were wondering about the green light in our window, now you know. ***** Chelsea Clinton came to Rockaway for the Clinton Foundation’s Day of Action last Saturday. She was here right after Sandy and again in 2013. Last year, her dad and former President Bill Clinton came.

Help Bring Christmas Cheer to Broad Channel By Katie McFadden Christmas is just seven weeks away and Stephanie Wagner is hoping to deck the roads of Broad Channel once again for the fourth season. Motivating locals with a potential $5,000 top prize, Wagner has launched a fundraiser raffle for the Fourth Annual Broad Channel Christmas Lights. The Broad Channel Christmas Lights, featuring decorative illuminated garlands across Cross Bay Boulevard, is a tradition that came after Hurricane Sandy. “I was raising money after the storm to help out residents and someone suggested we decorate the town a little bit because it was so depressing. We reached out to different companies and partnered with P.C. Richard, which donated gift cards, so we were able to have a Christmas party in the town and raffle off the gift cards and we used the rest of the money to put our lights up. Now this has become a tradition,” Wagner said. “In light of all that our little town has been through, I like to remember this as one good thing that came from a disastrous time. Now, these lights serve as a

reminder of all that we are capable of. We are a small town, but we are a mighty one.” Before Sandy, the town of Broad Channel didn’t have Christmas lights above Cross Bay Boulevard. Wagner hopes to keep it an ongoing tradition. “I just love the lights. They look great and they light up our town. It’s something we never had. I always loved Christmas decorations and driving around other neighborhoods to see them. Broad Channel is a very tightknit community and we do a lot of stuff ourselves because we’re small, but it shows a sense of unity and that everyone is here to help each other,” Wagner said. The past four fundraisers have been a success, showing that Broad Channel is capable of lighting up in the face of darkness. Selling raffle tickets online has made the event even more of a success, since the raffle is open to a wider audience. “We have a lot of Rockaway people that donate and now that we do it online, we see names we don’t recognize, which is nice to see that a lot of people are sharing it. It has been easier every year. Now that we’ve been doing this for

The Rockaway Times

a few years and people know what it is and what the money goes towards, it is easier to sell tickets,” Wagner said. From now until the big drawing on Friday, November 20, all are welcome to purchase a chance to

to buy them sooner than later. Even though tickets sell out each year, Wagner says people tend to wait until the last minute to buy them. “The deadline to sell the tickers is tough. A lot of people will buy last minute, so sometimes

win the $5,000 or nine other cash prizes, which helps make spirits bright for the town of Broad Channel. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased on Eventbrite by going to www.eventbrite.com and searching “Broad Channel Christmas Lights.” Only 400 tickets will be sold, so people are encouraged

it’s hard to stay positive and know that they’re going to sell out, but we always pull it off,” Wagner said. “Last year we were scrambling toward the end but we sold out on the day of the drawing, which was awesome.” Wagner, a Broad Channel naContinued on page 10

on Beach 92nd Street during a party from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Friday, November 20. The drawing will be held that night but the winner does not need to be present. The drawing party will feature a DJ and drink specials. “It’s really a fun night for everyone, Wagner said. The fun continues the next day when the lights go up. A Brooklyn company called Illuminations by Arnold installs the annual display and maintains it throughout the season, fixing anything that may break or be damaged due to wind or other circumstances. The decorations stay up until mid-January, when the company takes it down. Yet each year they return and Wagner says she hopes to keep it going for many years to come. tive, recently moved to Long Island City, so having the online sale of tickets, plus the help of her mother Margaret Wagner, friend Ashley Keane, and others in the community who have offered to sell tickets to coworkers have made the process easier. “The help and ticket sales show that I’m not the only one who wants to see the lights. People are excited about it and that’s a great feeling, Wagner said. The money raised for the event will go toward the light display along Cross Bay Boulevard and any leftover money goes to the Broad Channel Athletic Club, which holds an annual Christmas tree lighting event for the community in addition to its many sports programs. The winner of the $5,000 and the nine other cash prizes will be announced at the Bungalow Bar

The Department of Transportation will soon be holding town-hall meetings to discuss the future of Woodhaven Boulevard and Cross Bay Boulevard, with one of the major changes proposed being the expansion of Select Bus Service to the busy thoroughfare. The plan would remove a lane of traffic in both directions that will be for the Q52 and Q53 routes, with a pedestrian median located in the middle. State Senator Joseph Addabbo is opposed to the plan, saying that it will create unnecessary congestion on already crowded streets and pose a danger to both drivers and pedestrians. “Long after DOT has decided whether to imple-

ment this plan in our neighborhoods and move on, we are left behind to deal with the outcome, whether it be good or bad, Addabbo said. “It is crucial that we help the agency make an informed decision by providing as much input as possible before any plans are set in stone. Addabbo is encouraging his constituents to write to the DOT, continuously check the website, and to attend meetings once the dates for them become available, as the agency has yet to announce anything official. “This plan would have consequences to everyone in the community, and it is important that we voice our concerns immediately, Addabbo said.

Odds & Ends What a weekend for New York City! Its been 14 years since the world changed for New York and three years since the world changed for Rockaway and the rest of the east coast, but we and our fellow New Yorkers are so resilient! I mean the Halloween Parade, the Marathon, the World Series! What a great weekend for New York. Yes, I know the Mets lost, and I am not a Met fan, but they had a great run and kept the city mesmerized; hats off to them, they were fun to watch and root for. I met a fan that actually told me that if they lost this year it would make next year’s World Series win sweeter. The guy must have been a Dodger fan prior to 1957! Well, I guess there is some truth to that, just ask the Royals. And how about the Marathon? Earlier this year I wrote a blog about the disappearance of runners at local events. Now I know they were training for the big one. Fifty thousand people ran, and many from Rockaway thanks to the tireless efforts of John Edwards and Team Kevin. So many people from the peninsula ran their first marathon. Who knows maybe one day even I might try. Being on First Avenue watching as they ran by gave such a sense of hope, pride and exhilaration! Congratulations to all who ran. Back in the mid-Seventies I started going to the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade. It was the most creative and fun night one could spend in New York, and it was for free! The puppets and steel bands marching through the streets leading to Washington Square Park were just amazing. Today the parade is more commercial and mainstream, but still wonderfully creative and energizing. This year I missed it but for a good reason. My daughter took me to see Dead and Company with her friend, both dressed in

Ten years ago I took thePlanning “little mermaid” to see John Mayer Planning on startingCome joinbusiness? us! your own Come join us! when he was a pop star; and now she takes me to see John playing with Bobby Weir – and they were awesome. Of course the little mermaid was dressed as Frida Kahlo and her friend was dressed as Bob Ross. It was like I was with celebrities. Only in New York kiddos. Yeah the Giants lost after scoring 49 points, and yeah the Jets lost too, but hey you can’t always win. And yeah the Knicks might be presentable on some nights. And if none of that holds true there are always the Rangers. How lucky are we in New York to have all these teams at our fingertips. So once again, hats off to the Mets. Yankees start getting your act together, I expect more from you guys next year. Well, Thanksgiving is around the corner, and we are obligated to spend time with family, even the ones we don’t like so much! Yeah, yeah, Namaste to you too. The mermaid of the house, not the little one, but the mojo domo one decided we should work at a soup kitchen this year, and I thought that was a fine idea. But guess what, they are all booked. Can’t even volunteer at God’s Love or Holy Apostle. So we offered our assistance to one in Greenpoint. So Thanksgiving Eve we will be serving meals to hipsters. I guess even their trust funds run out too. I hope they don’t wear the skinny jeans, might be a tight squeeze. And to top it all off, my mother-in-law, the sweetest person in the world turned 90 this past week. God bless her, she spent her whole life dedicated to her family and husband, and made it to 90. May God continue to smile down upon her. What a week! And to think so much more to come, odd and no end in sight.

Election Day was this past Tuesday, November 5th, and while it was a relatively light ballot this year there were still some contests decided. In Queens County, the main election taking place was for Judge of the Civil Court. With three open seats, the top three vote getters will be ushered. Election results are unofficial for a few weeks, but as of now the winners are Democrats

Maureen A. Healy, Laurentina S. McKetney Butler, and Ushir Pandit-Durant. Broad Channel resident Michael A. O’Reilly, running under three party banners including that of the Republican Party, finished in fourth with 11 percent of the unofficial tally. Official results will be announced in late November.

Rockaway Neighborhoods: Neponsit By Dylan Watton This is the fifth in a series of articles about the neighborhoods of Rockaway. In an effort to profile these areas, we’ve talked to residents and business owners about their little slice of the peninsula. This week is Neponsit. On Beach 142nd Street and Beach 147th Street, green plazas of trees, grass, and other flora go up and down the block, separating the left and right side of the streets on wider blocks than the ones normally found in uptown Rockaway. Despite being an occasional nuisance to many a Q35 bus driver who hits the curb, these malls are perhaps the most notable symbol of the affluent neighborhood called Neponsit. Meaning “place between the waters” in an undefined Native American language, Neponsit is bordered to the north and south by Jamaica Bay and the ocean, respectively, and is flanked by Belle Harbor to the east and Riis Park to the west. A New York Times article states that “The street grid was laid out by the Neponsit Realty Company in 1910.” In an early indication of the kind of homes that would be found in the neighborhood, the article states that “hotels, stores and

houses costing less than $3,000 were prohibited. A few houses became summer-only destinations, but Neponsit was designed for year-round living, unlike many other Rockaway neighborhoods.” Until New York City bought the beaches lining the neighborhood in 1939, it was reserved exclusively for residents of Neponsit. The neighborhood is of a rare breed in New York City. “One of the benefits of being a homeowner in Neponsit over the other areas in Rockaway is the zoning,” Lisa Jackson of Rockaway Properties said. “Neponsit is an R1 zone which does not allow for any commercial use or multifamily homes [and] this makes it more exclusive.” A notable exception is the West End Temple on Beach 147th Street, erected in 1954 at the former site of the Mandel Mansion, where the congregation used to worship. Amanda Agoglia, president of the Neponsit Property Owners Association (NPOA), said that houses of worship are always permitted under the R1 zone rules. The area is also the site of major, if little-known, aviation history. In a time before JFK or LaGuardia, the U.S. Navy ambitiously launched four seaplanes on May 8, 1919 from Beach Channel Drive in

modern-day Neponsit. After stops in Newfoundland and the Azores, one of the planes, captained by Lt. Commander Albert C. Read, landed in Lisbon, Portugal on May 31. It marked the first ever transatlantic flight, eight years before Charles Lindbergh made his (albeit solo) trek across the ocean.

brick home with a bronze fountain on the lawn and a huge driveway; directly across the street is a modern-style beige house lined with hedges and featuring a doubleslanted roof; and just up the block a towering brownish house stands with prominent cylindrical features.

Owing to its history as an upperclass residential area, with a number of homes regularly exceeding $1 million when put on the market, Neponsit features many large homes with a variety of architectural styles, much more so than found in neighboring Belle Harbor. The famous Little North Pole house stands on the corner of Neponsit Avenue and Beach 144th Street and is a massive red-

As a real-estate broker, she has sold three houses on her beach block and 12 houses total on the entirety of the block. “It’s very quiet,” she said of Neponsit. “When I moved there my daughter was two years old and son was two weeks old. We taught them to ride their bikes in the street. Anybody who came down your street really lived there. When we sleep with the door open we can hear the ocean.” Doreen Mingino has lived in Neponsit for 20 years on Beach 142nd Street. “When my family

People say hello to you as you walk down the street.” Agoglia spoke to the location of Neponsit relative to the rest of the city. “It’s like living in the suburbs but we’re so very close to the city. Our neighbors enjoy living by the ocean but a lot of them commute to the city, so it’s the best of both worlds,” she said. Agoglia said that the NPOA works closely with elected officials, the 100th Precinct, and other civic and property associations to keep the character of the houses and communi-

Marvin Eisenstadt, owner of Sweet ‘N Low, has lived in Neponsit since 1965 and was deeply affected by Hurricane Sandy. “After Sandy I was really traumatized,” he said. “When the news of [Joaquin] came along I kept looking out my window to make sure I was safe. While the ocean used to be my best friend, now it’s just my pal.” Mingino found a positive aspect to the storm. “Hurricane Sandy brought the area closer together. I’ve gotten closer to my neighbors. They really are like family now. Everyone was looking out for each other. It was nice to know that people cared and

dren,” Agoglia said. “They take a lot of pride in their community and are always looking to make it better.” For Tom Boggiano, Neponsit and Rockaway as a whole has remained intact over the years. “Growing up in Rockaway you thought of Neponsit as the outpost of the peninsula being so far from any ‘action’ that you rarely went,” he said. “You may ride your bike to the stores on Neponsit Avenue but otherwise there was not much else for a kid to do. Today it remains all residential but riding your bike through the streets of Neponsit or any other neighborhood is all just the same.”

CURRAN’S

NYC Councilman Eric Ulrich On the Record This is the fourth in a series of responses by elected officials or agency heads on important transportation issues in Rockaway and New York City. This week we’re printing the first half of a face-to-face interview that was recently conducted with Eric Ulrich. Eric shared his opinions on a variety of transportation issues. Enjoy! 1. Select Bus Service (SBS) on Woodhaven Blvd and Cross Bay Blvd. EU: The Woodhaven – Cross Bay Boulevard corridor is the most congested in the entire borough. SBS has the potential to improve [and] reduce congestion for buses and commute time for people taking public transportation. But Queens is not Manhattan. Sincere attempts must be made by the DOT and MTA to listen to the community to resolve the logistical issues that have been raised. RH: It’s been argued that SBS changes that helps bus riders at the expense of motorists. EU: There are more people in cars than riding buses so we need to do what we can to get people out of their cars and using public transportation. We can do this by speeding up buses, making them more reliable. It’s good for the environment and saves them money. We owe the people who have been making a sacrifice by not driving a safer and faster mass transit system. 2. QueensRail (Old Rockaway Beach Line) EU: I do not have a position on it, as there are valid arguments for and against. I applaud Assemblyman Goldfeder for championing this issue because anything that can improve access to reliable public transportation is a net boon for the Rockaways. That being said, unlike SBS I don’t know what it will cost or how we are going to pay for it, I will continue to focus my efforts on things that I have more control over and are more likely to happen anytime soon. RH: Given all these unknowns, would you support the idea of a study to try and get some answers to these questions? EU: Absolutely I would support a feasibility study. It is a topic worthy of discussion. RH: Do you support converting the right of way to a park, the project known as QueensWay? EU: I don’t have a position on this project either. The State should play

an important role here as they have the most jurisdiction. It’s not a simple question and we need more answers before making a decision as to which project or even both are best for Queens. 3. Vision Zero and 25 MPH City Speed limit EU: I support some of the initiatives of Vision Zero such as educating the public through public outreach campaigns for pedestrians, bike riders and drivers. What I do not support is Vision Zero being used as a revenue generator. It appears that Mayor de Blasio is less focused on education than raising millions of dollars for the City’s coffers. Another thing I don’t like about Vision Zero is how it has turned bus drivers into criminals. Vision Zero requires that bus drivers who get in accidents with pedestrians are presumed to be guilty and arrested without due process. RH: Did you support the reduction of the City speed limit from 30 mph to 25? EU: I think it was unnecessary and I didn’t vote for it. 4. Traffic Calming (removing lanes, etc.) EU: It makes sense in very select locations where you have drag racing, accidents, drunk drivers and speeding such as Cross Bay Boulevard through the bird sanctuary. Although I was originally against it, the data shows that since the third lane was removed average speeds have been reduced 10 – 15 MPH. With the lane removal and the installation of the Jersey barrier long the nature path, I think it was a wise move in retrospect. RH: Every east-west road in Rockaway has been the victim of traffic calming and lane reduction. EU: But lane removals don’t work everywhere. Poor urban planning on the part of engineers who have a very idealistic vision of what the city streetscape should look like. For instance, DOT removed a lane on Rockaway Boulevard in Ozone Park but instead of calm it has created congestion and chaos. We are now asking them to put the lanes back. In Rockaway, many lane closures have caused bottlenecks such as to Breezy Point that have made it difficult to get home never mind the beach. I think that was a mistake. This is another example of DOT making these decisions without consulting the community or the Continued on page 35

Ideas From the Ferry Guy

269 Beach 116th Street, Rockaway, NY 718-318-5100

Dear Editor: (This was sent to Andrew Genn of the NYC Economic Development Corporation). At the ferry landing in Rockaway there is approximately 1,140 feet of bulkhead. Why not consider installing a floating container mall as an incubator for retail at this site? Consider the following-1. There is little or no shopping in Rockaway 2. The container mall could be an incubator for retail with a certain number of container stores rotated with new vendors each summer [May-October] 3. If the city is going to subsidize the Rockaway ferry, the city could get most of its money back in increased sales taxes from Rockaway activity. 4. Some examples of stores: fishing tackle store, holiday ornaments with a beach theme, a bike store, beach wagon store catering to apartment dwellers [The Urban Wagon], a bird watching equipment store. Jamaica Bay is one of the top bird watching areas in the country. Bird watching in the US is an industry that attracts 40 million people and is worth $40 billion to the US economy on an annual basis. 5. The container mall could be constructed and installed in six months. 6. This idea could also be done on the north side of the seaport 7. Rockaway could become a boating destination. It is time for NYC to attract the large boating population from around the tri-state into Rockaway. 8. The Rockaway ferry dock is a three block walk to the ocean.

Shameless Dear Editor: A few Saturday mornings ago, my 2013 Chevy Cruze was in the Waldbaum’s parking lot. When I returned from shopping, I found the right side front fender was badly damaged and no note was left. I thought all that had to be done was to hammer it out. When I went to the repair shop, I learned that wasn’t the case and that an entire new fender had to be ordered and installed. Could you imagine taking a boat from upstate NY down the Hudson River to Rockaway and then walk to the beach? Where else could you do this? How many boats are there in NJ from Sandy Hook to the George Washington Bridge? 9. Each ferry dock should have another source of income for EDC (and not by charging docking fees to ferry operators). 10. Each ferry dock or immediate area should be some type of tourist destination, not just a commuting site. Some examples could include the tall ships, floating classrooms and a floating swimming pool. In conclusion, 2017 is an election year. Could you imagine if the mayor was able to state at one of the election debates that tourism to Rockaway is up by 1 million visitors from 2016, at the ferry dock 80-100 jobs were created and sales tax collected during summer months in Rockaway is double or triple from the summer before? Thanks for taking the time to read my ideas. Joe Hartigan

100th Precinct Food Drive In Dayton The 100th Precinct Community Council is holding a food drive to benefit House on the Rock Church, located on Beach 114th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. The food drive will be held on Thursday, November 12th from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the lobby of 103-00 Shore Front Parkway (Dayton Towers) and is open to all residents

of the Rockaways, not just those who live in the building. They will be collecting non-perishable food items, which includes canned soup, tuna, or vegetables, cereal, bottled water, powdered drinks such as hot chocolate, and more. With the holidays fast approaching it’s never too early to get in the giving spirit!

VFW To Hold Annual Thanksgiving Dinner For Vets With Veterans Day fast approaching, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Broad Channel Post #260 will hold their annual Thanksgiving Dinner for disabled veterans at St. Albans Hospital. This dinner and most of Sunday’s activities are only open to the invited veterans. However, the VFW invites all to stop by their post at 705 Shad Creek Road

early in the day to greet the veterans and thank them for their years of dedicated service to the country. Veterans Day is always held on November 11th, initially commemorating the armistice ending World War I. In 1954 Congress amended the holiday to celebrate veterans of all American battles.

Katie’s Koncert On Tap The 4th Annual Katie’s Koncert will take place November 14 from 6-10 pm at the Monsignor Kelly Parish Center at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre. The mission of the Katie McBride Foundation is to honor the memory of Katie and the families of all childhood leukemia victims and other life-threatening diseases. The Foundation’s primary objective is to honor Katie while raising important funds and

awareness of the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island and the family support services it provides and other local worthy causes. Andy Cooney and His Band will provide the entertainment and there will be special guest appearances by Jim “Wolfie McGrath and the NYPD Pipes and Drums. For more information, contact Mike McBride at Mike@KatieMcBrideFoundation.org.

From Broken Ribs To Smoked Ribs Rockaway Doctor Can Help

By Dylan Watton

The employees at Sands Point Physical Therapy usually bring their own lunches but occasionally they are treated to a taste explosion courtesy of the head doctor at the practice, Dr. Timothy Rohrs. In addition to his day job, Rohrs moonlights as a competitive barbeque chef, taking part in smokehouse sweepstakes all across the country. “My brother and I are a year apart and we’ve always loved ribs,” Rohrs said. “A lot of our favorite places to get them started closing down and the only place left to eat ribs was Chili’s which sucks. So we started cooking our own.” In 2005, Rohrs saw in Newsday that a competition would be taking place at Heckscher State Park in Suffolk County and asked his brother if he’d be interested. “He told me ‘Are you nuts? We have no idea what we’re doing?’ I told him ‘What’s the worst that can happen? We’ll cook, drink cocktails, eat our food, and go home.’ My only goal was not to come in last.” They did not come in last, and instead caught the BBQ bug that has led Rohrs to compete both as a team and solo in hundreds of competitions across the

country since. While BBQ is Rohrs’ passion, physical therapy is his career, and Sands Point has served the Rockaway community since October 28, 2001. He initially went to school for hospitality and managed restaurants for five-to-six years “but after being held up at gunpoint twice I decided I needed to find a

new career,” he said. He graduated from PT school in 1996. “I used to work at Rockaway Park Physical Therapy but the guy who owned the practice then was a clown,” Rohrs recalled. “He was disliked by locals and doctors.” Rohrs said that he fired in April 2001 after a year on the job when the owner wanted to return to run the practice after

his daughter had recovered from an illness, which he was not made aware of. “I said to myself that this community deserves better than that,” he said. Rohrs said that his field is complicated yet rewarding. “Most people go to the doctor because they are in some kind of pain,” he Continued on page 43

As we all know, we just passed the third anniversary of the damaging effects Rockaway and our surrounding areas sustained from Hurricane Sandy. The trauma we all went through for months and for some families years, is lessening. Yes, we went through hell, but the outcome may be better than what existed for us pre-Sandy. Renovations that may not have taken place are happening from housing, transportation, new businesses and the redesign of the boardwalk. These along with businesses that fought to come back after the storm are what is awakening our sleepy beachfront town. Sure, many of the plans for rebuilding are taking time. Much more time than we all thought it would take, i.e. boardwalk and ferry. But the effects of projects

completed are very exciting to see. The promise of our community growing and offering residents and visitors amenities that other areas have had for years is comforting. As a third generation Rockawayite, raising a fourth generation here, I’m excited and exhilarated as I look at the forward progress of Rockaway. All around Rockaway from Riis Park to 129th Street, Beach 116th Street to Restaurant Row in the 90s, Rockaway has a beating pulse. Our continued support as a community is what these merchants need. They may be small businesses, but let’s give them the business! The sun, the sea, the sand, the shops. There’s shopping and dining to be enjoyed here all year long. Sandy Anniversary Planting On Sunday, October 25th, the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) hosted a Sandy Anniversary Planting to commemorate the third anniversary of Sandy. As Rockaway learned from the storm, the natural vegetation and dunes that exist off the shore served as a protective buffer to the homes and businesses that exist in our community. Many of these dunes and plants were compromised by the storm and still need to be replenished to protect us

next time. So during this event the community came together to strengthen the natural protective buffer and shield Rockaway from future storms. At Beach 49th Street, about 45 community members joined the high school students in RWA’s Shore Corps program to move trees that are being affected by the boardwalk rebuild higher up on the beach. For more information, contact RWA at www.rwalliance.org

Pneumonia and Scrabble – Perfect Together! To all three of my readers who were worried sick wondering what had become of this column, rest assured there is no need to pay the ransom, I’ve escaped and the column is back! I thought I had another one of my semi-annual, change of season, colds or flus with the usual symptoms so I sat around the house listening to Linda Ronstadt singing “Poor, poor pitiful me generally annoying the hell out of my family. When the symptoms lasted for more than a week gradually getting worse with a low-grade fever, headache, sore throat, fatigue, and a dry cough that got worse at night preventing me from sleeping, my family, obviously concerned with my health issues, staged an intervention. As an aside, a “staged intervention in the Mahon household consists of everyone in the family surrounding me with angry looks while my beloved Grace softly whispers in my ear, “If you don’t go to the doctor we will stab you with a steak knife in between one your coughing fits! Suitably chastened, I pulled on my big boys pants and headed out the door to seek medical assistance. After a round of x-rays and a thorough examination, my doctor told me that I was suffering from mycoplasma pneumonia, commonly referred to as walking pneumonia. He assured me that a regimen of strong antibiotics and a period of rest at home while playing Scrabble would have me fit as a fiddle in a matter of a week or so. I understood the antibiotics and rest at home but I had to ask him why he was recommending I play HOT & FRESH MAKES US BEST!

Scrabble at home while recuperating. He looked at me with a quizzical expression on his face and stated, “Are you kidding me? You have pneumonia, it’s a nine letter word with all the vowels‌you’ll get extra points for playing it!â€? Congratulations are in order for photographer and friend of Broad Channel Maureen Drennan. Maureen is a professor at LaGuardia Community College in Queens where she teaches photography and her work, featuring many scenes of everyday life in the Channel, has been featured in the New York Times and other media outlets. Maureen’s photos were part of an exhibition over in Brooklyn this past weekend. Anyone who has seen Maureen’s photo of a post-Sandy Broad Channel entitled “Mollyâ€? cannot help but be reminded of another terrific photographer who goes by the name of Annie Leibovitz. You can visit Maureen’s website at maureendrennan. net. Great news! The Corbett family of West 11th Road received the keys to their brand new home, courtesy of Build It Back, last Thursday, October 29, which just coincidentally happened to be the third anniversary of Super Storm Sandy whose storm surge destroyed the Corbett’s original residence some 1,095 days earlier! More good news‌it also appears that the Glade family from West 10th Road will be moving back into their home in the very near future. Broad Channel – why would anyone want to live anywhere else? Chelsea Puts in Work On Saturday, October 31, Chelsea Clinton participated in the Clinton Foundation’s fourth Day of Action by helping work on a Beach 17th Street home that was damaged by Hurricane Sandy. Clinton founded the annual Day of Action following Sandy and has helped out during every anniversary of the storm since. The Day of Action has grown since it started in 2012 and the Clin-

ton Foundation has hosted 24 of these events, mobilizing 5,250 volunteers for various projects around the world. Projects took place at Brookville Park, Rockaway Beach and in Far Rockaway on Saturday. Nearly 200 volunteers came to Rockaway to clean up the beach and along with the St. Bernard Project, helped repair homes damaged by Sandy by hanging insulation and drywall, painting and laying floors.

Diary of a Fat Man

Beware Of So-Called Healthy Foods By Bruce Bernfeld You may be aware that when I started this healthy living journey, I really meant starting a diet. Hopefully, if you’ve been following this column you remember I talked about having an aversion to calling it a diet because I felt and still feel that a diet has an end point and “healthy living” is a way of life. But, I really didn’t expect to get into the intricacies of nutrition as much as I have. I think a diet can be approached in two ways. You can go on a diet to lose weight or you can go on a diet to better your health. While losing weight may affect your health positively, to have a major impact on your health you have to live a healthy lifestyle (there I go again). And to live a healthy lifestyle you have to try and follow the tenets of proper nutrition and eat things that are good for you while shunning things that are bad and can harm you. With that said, here are a few things that are bad for you, but you may not know because some of them are disguised as things that are healthy and good for you!!! BEWARE!! Microwave Popcorn: Harmful Ingredients: Diacetyl, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and transfats. Many major brands not only contain heart-harming trans fats but also line their bags with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), the same toxic stuff found in Teflon pots and pans. What’s more, butter-flavored favorites are almost always laced with diacetyl (DA), a chemical that has been found to break down the layer of cells that protects one of our most vital organs: the brain. Fruit Juice: Harmful Ingredients: Fructose. It’s natural! It’s packed with Vitamin C! It comes from Florida! What could be wrong? Well, while 100 percent fruit juice is a better pick than sugary drinks, even the all-natural stuff still packs up to 36 grams of sugar per cup—or about what you’d get from popping four Krispy Kreme glazed donuts into a blender and hitting blend. Diet Soda: Harmful Ingredients: Caramel coloring, brominated vegetable oil (BVO), Bisphenol A (BPA), aspartame. What do cancer-causing artificial colors, flame-retardants and fat-causing fake sugars all have in common? They’re ingredients in all your favorite diet sodas. Shove all that into a bottle laced with BPA, a chemical that’s been linked to obesity, and you’ve pretty much got the worst drink ever. Nearly all popular diet so-

das contain aspartame, an artificial sweetener that raises glucose levels, overloading the liver and causing the excess to convert into fat. Processed Meats: Harmful Ingredients: Nitrate and salt. The bacon and sausage you enjoy for breakfast and the deli meats you use to make your lunch may be putting your life at risk. How? Many of these meats contain nitrates, a preservative that interferes with the body’s natural ability to process sugar, which increases the risk for diabetes. It can also up your odds of developing thyroid and colon cancer. Ice Cream: Harmful Ingredients: Soybean oil, titanium dioxide, artificial coloring. Most “premium” ice creams are overloaded with sugar and soybean oil, a fat that’s been linked to weight gain. Some even contain harmful artificial coloring agents and titanium dioxide, an additive that gives sunblock its white hue! Atlantic Salmon: Harmful Ingredients: Omega-6s, PCBs Atlantic salmon is farm-raised and packed with inflammatory omega-6s. Because salmon farmers feed their fish soy, farmed salmon has around 1,900 milligrams of the unhealthy fatty acid while wild salmon has just 114 milligrams. It gets worse: farmed salmon are usually dyed pink, have been found to be high in PCBs (cancer-causing industrial chemicals that were banned in 1979). And… sorry to have to tell you this: OREOS: Harmful Ingredients: Palm oil, alkali processed cocoa, high fructose corn syrup. Oreos don’t come with a warning, but maybe they should! Not only are they filled with palm oil, a fat that promotes fat-causing inflammation, Oreos have been shown to be more addictive than both cocaine and morphine, according to a 2013 animal study. Remodeling Your Bathroom By Artie Wallace For most the word “remodeling” makes you think of high cost and major work. That doesn’t have to be the case. Instead of remodeling, let’s think of it more like a makeover. While you will probably need help from a contractor or handyman for parts of the job (or the full job on larger projects), there are ways to remodel your bathroom without spending a fortune. Changing a toilet and vanity, adding a mirror and a coat of paint could give your bathroom a whole new look and feel. For more of a personal touch you can add wainscoting at half height, this will add depth to a small bathroom. In the bathroom in this photo, we left the existing floor, medicine chest and toilet (which was fairly new), replaced the sink and vanity. We added a shelf above the toilet, wainscoting around the perimeter of the bathroom and painted the walls. For a fraction of the cost of a new bathroom, this bathroom looks like it was completely remodeled. Of course most contractors/

handymen like getting a full remodeling job, but you would be surprised at how many will work with you on smaller makeovers like this. Some may charge a small fee to help you lay out the new look (remember their time is worth something), some may even deduct that fee from any portion of the work you need them to do for you. When making over your bathroom, keep in mind that colors matter. Light or brighter colors will give the bathroom a more welcoming look and feel. Adding a little contrast (as with the white wainscoting against the wall color) can add depth to a smaller bathroom. Shelves accenting the color or glass shelves are also a nice touch. So whether you’re fixing up the bathroom to get the house ready for sale or just want a new look to make you feel better about your home, you don’t have to break the bank to do it. Restorative Yoga One of the most healing and renewing yoga practices is restorative. It is the art of relaxing in yoga poses using supports such as bolsters, blocks, blankets, straps, eye pillows and perhaps essential oils. The parasympathetic nervous system is stimulated, promoting relaxation, which helps balance and heal the body. This practice is great to balance an active yoga schedule or to give yourself a break when you feel under the weather. It is also wonderful and healing for people with chronic illness, acute illness and recovering from an injury. The philosophy in restorative yoga is by relaxing in poses, using props, without strain or pain, our bodies will heal physically, mentally and emotionally. The parasympathetic nervous system is stimulated when we relax which promotes a relaxation response and reduces stress in our bodies. The parasympathetic system, among other things, is responsible for the slowing down of the heart rate and breath and increasing blood flow to the vital organs. The goal is to combat the physical and mental effects of everyday stresses and ease ailments such as headaches, backaches, insomnia and anxiety with restful poses and deep breathing techniques. We can use our breath mindfully to direct the breath flow into an area of our bodies that gives us tension and discomfort. The body will naturally open up and feel the stretch in a very gentle way. It is slow and nurturing. You remain in the poses for an extended amount of time and this could make you feel vulnerable and emotional, but it is all good and part of the process. It is powerful and so healing. The real reason for writing about restorative yoga is to inform people about this amazing practice. Whether you are healthy or sick, stiff or flexible, strong or weak, active or sedentary you will

benefit from this class. Some of the benefits of restorative yoga are: s %NHANCES m EXIBILITY s $EEPLY RELAXES THE BODY s 3TILLS THE MIND s )MPROVES THE CAPACITY FOR HEAL ing and balancing s "ALANCES THE NERVOUS AND IM mune system s "OOSTS )MMUNITY s )MPROVES YOUR MOOD At Ocean Bliss Yoga we have monthly two-hour workshops but I am hoping to start a class on the schedule based on donation. If you can’t afford to take a workshop perhaps this weekly class would be enough for you. The intention is to help those individuals who could really benefit from restorative yoga but do not know where to start. We will start the class in December when stress is at its highest for so many during the holiday season. I encourage you to try some restorative yoga. Judith Lasater says ~ “The development of these poses is credited to B.K.S. Iyengar, of Pune, India. Author of the contemporary classic Light on Yoga and numerous other books, Iyengar has been teaching yoga for more than sixty years. Widely recognized as a worldwide authority, he is one of the most creative teachers of yoga today. Iyengar’s early teaching experience showed him how pain or injury can result from a student straining in a yoga pose. He experimented with “props,” modifying poses until the student could practice without strain. Iyengar also explored how these modified poses could help people recover from illness or injury. It is because of his creativity that the restorative poses in my book (Relax and Renew)-most of which have been developed or directly inspired by him-are such powerful tools to reduce stress and restore health.” Check our website for class schedules, workshops and special events: oceanblissyoga.net.

Child Care Business Info Session In Far Rock The Business Outreach Center (BOC), an organization that seeks to improve the economic standing of underserved communities in New York City, will be hosting a free child care training information session on Monday, November 16, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. It will be held at the Blanche Daycare Center located at 44-02 Beach Channel Drive in Far Rockaway. The BOC runs the Child Care Means Business program, a 60hour training that teaches business management, nutrition, and early childhood development to

those who want to start or expand their child care home base businesses. The info session will discuss the goals and objectives of the training classes, the days and time the classes will meet, as well as how the child care training credits received can be applied towards the required thirty hours of training. This session was brought to community thanks to efforts by Councilman Donovan Richards. For more information, contact Annette Cohen of the BOC at 646229-0322.

Facts You Probably Don’t Need As for the facts below, we don’t verify. They might not be facts at all but the Internet says they are! ☛☛☛ ☛The first cloned pet was a cat and it’s name was Copy Cat. ☛The $1 million prize for “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” is paid out as an annuity over 20 years and has never been adjusted for inflation. ☛Stephen King never cashed the $5,000 check he received for the rights of turning Shawshank Redemption into a movie. Instead, years after the movie came out, he framed the check and gave it back to Mr. Darabont with a note: “In case you ever need bail money. Love, Steve.” ☛America ranks #14 (behind Russia at #13) in reading, math, science, literacy, and graduation rates. ☛When Matt LeBlanc auditioned for the role as Joey Tribbiani he only had $11. When the cast got their paychecks, the first thing he bought was a hot dinner.

☛Google is planning to implement “sea view” into Google Maps by using a 360 degree underwater camera. ☛Since 1940, 85 percent of those who have attempted to break the water speed record have died in the attempt. ☛SEAL Team Six was named to confuse the Soviets about the actual number of SEAL Teams that were operating. At the time there were only two. ☛Nintendo has such a large cash reserve that it could lose $250 million every year and wouldn’t go bankrupt until 2050. ☛Those making less than $10,000 a year spend $597 on the lottery meanwhile the average US household spends $162. States not only know this; they actually target the poor with lottery ads.

Pols Urge Fixes For Route 878 Rockaway residents know full well the perils of traveling on Route 878. To help remedy the situation on this and other major roads in Queens and nearby Nassau County, Assemblymen Phil Goldfeder and Todd Kaminsky and Nassau County legislator Howard Kopel organized an interagency meeting to encourage officials to fix the roads. “The longer we delay repairs to Rockaway Turnpike, Rockaway Boulevard and the 878, the more our families are put at risk during our commutes and in the event of major storms,” Goldfeder said.

“This roadway is one of only three evacuation routes for thousands of families on the Rockaway Peninsula.” The meeting took place in Lawrence and the pols discussed proposals that had been brought up in a state-funded study of the roadway in 2012. Route 878 is often at risk for flooding and was damaged in Hurricane Sandy. It handles nearly 40,000 vehicles per day. The state officials at the meeting agreed to consider possible actions in the study that could be expedited, vowing to follow up with their conclusions.

Primary Care Physicians

Marshal Stephen W. Biegel 109 W. 38th Street, Suite 200 New York, NY 10018 Office: (212) MARSHAL (627-7425) Fax: (212) 398-2000 NYC@marshalbiegel.com www.NewYorkCityMarshal.com

There is a shortage of primary care physicians (internists, osteopaths and family practitioners) in this country and it’s getting worse. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that over 8,000 additional primary care physicians (PCPs) are needed. Other studies have placed the number needed as high as 52,000 by 2025. In addition the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is designed to provide health coverage for millions of currently under or uninsured people who, once they have coverage, will be unable to find a doctor to take care of them. To compound matters further many PCPs now work part-time or have retired early. Let’s look at what is driving the doctors to early retirement. Malpractice premiums, taxes and the costs of running a business are all rising while reimbursements have fallen. One study estimated that 39 percent of the work day of PCPs is spent on patient care-related tasks outside of the examination room. Things like calling and emailing patients, talking with families, coordinating patient care, reviewing test and imaging results, refilling prescriptions and talking with consultants. Under current guidelines, unlike an attorney, none of this work is billable or reimbursable. Another study found that for every 30 minutes of patient visit time another 6.7 minutes of work is needed. The number of medical students entering primary care residency programs is falling. Many are choosing to go into specialties like dermatology or emergency medicine as the pay is better and there is no on-call requirement.

Also as PCP salaries are among the lowest of all physicians, some opt to go into specialized fields like orthopedics and cardiothoracic surgery where they can make at least five-to-ten times what a PCP makes, although the training requirements are much longer. Another quirk in the current system is that many PCPs are opting to open urgent care centers because there is no on-call and billing and reimbursement is at ER levels. For example, your internist may get paid $50 for a visit for a sore throat but the urgent care center may get $200 for the same visit. If steps are not taken soon to remedy these problems the country will have a serious medical crisis on its hands. People will be unable to find a PCP who will take them and will have to resort to ERs and urgent care centers for all their medical issues. The ACA provides $250 million in funding in fiscal years 2011 to 2015 to improve and expand primary care training programs (to paraphrase Nancy Pelosi we had to pass the bill to find out that that funding was in it). But providing the funding without improving the lot of PCPs will not help. The government and insurers have promised for years to improve PCP reimbursement but have not done so. For starters improving PCP reimbursement and allowing PCPs to bill for nonface-to-face patient work should be implemented. The playing field needs to be leveled before it’s too late. Eric Ulrich On the Record Continued from page 15

local officials. What makes sense in Manhattan doesn’t always work in Queens. Rockaway is even more unique as the traffic patterns are dramatically different at different times of the year. Maybe street design and traffic control should change with the seasons. RH: At what point will we have control in our own neighborhood? EU: Current NYS law precludes local decision making. For example I would love to see a seasonal pedestrian plaza for Beach 116th Street during the summer when you have tens of thousands of people getting off the subway and encourage people to stay and spend money. But the city will only do one permanently, which wouldn’t make sense here. Citibike would also make a lot of sense for Rockaway but DOT has thus far said no. RH: How do we get control of DOT? EU: There are some good people there but the borough commissioners really don’t have much power. With some exceptions, DOT contin-

ues to be the toughest City agency to work with. 5. The use of Speed Cameras in unmarked School Zones EU: Speed cameras are absolutely punitive in nature. Many are unfairly placed. Drivers should be given the opportunity to slow down, but it’s all about revenue. If the safety of our students was really the priority then signage at least telling drivers they are approaching a school should come before summonses. RH: Didn’t you introduce a bill to force the City to notify drivers of a speed camera’s location? EU: Last year Steve Matteo (SI) and I introduced a bill that would notify drivers that they are in a photo enforced school zone. Unfortunately it is still waiting to be acted upon. I believe that instead of speed cameras we need more cops to get to the root of the problem. Watch for Part II next week! Got an idea for Smarter Transportation? Real Dice Real Ball A Real BIG DEAL!

By Emil R. Lucev, Sr. & Daughter, Katie Lucev Today’s view is a triple header of the Edgar L. Morrison’s Theatre, which was located in Seaside near the beachfront at Beach 102nd Street and Ocean Avenue. The latter was the midway of the Seaside Amusement Area torn down by Robert Moses in 1937-38 for the high-rise housing. Seaside’s Midway ran from Beach 100th Street where a wooden ramp led down to it from the Holland boardwalk. Heading west to about Beach 106th Street a visitor encountered the greater part of Seaside’s Amusement Area. Seaside was the Rockaways version of Coney Island. The first photo is from an old newspaper that was given to me by my Aunt Marge. It shows the Theatre and the Thunderbolt Rollercoaster being demolished at Beach 102nd Street. Clearly shown is the great stage before being knocked down forever. Many great performers and acts of the Old Vaudeville days appeared at Morrison’s direct from city theatres. Ocean Avenue ran from right to left in this photo near the bottom. The second photo is of a similar state in Coney Island which gives you an

idea of what the interior of Morrison’s Theatre looked like. The theatre seats were red velour, the carpeting was red, as were the draperies on the walls. The woodwork was made of natural and painted finishes. The third photo is a view of the frontage of the Grand Theatre. The front lobby was 20 x 100 and mirrored! Carpeting and draperies were also red. No views of the interior of this theatre have been found, but I am still looking! Morrison’s closed in 1926. The building was sold then became a dancehall for the next decade. Much information about the theatre and those who appeared on stage can be had from my files located in the Queensborough Public Library’s Long Island Division in Jamaica, Queens.

Stairs To China?

More than a few people have us asked about stairs from the boardwalk that are buried or being buried. The Parks Department says it’s all in the plan:

“The sand is piled up on the staircases in anticipation that they will gradually be exposed as the sand shifts.” Let’s hope we never see those bottom steps!

Halloween a Howling Success for the Hounds The pets of the Rockaways and Broad Channel and Breezy Point came out in record numbers to strut their paws in their most creative costumed finery. The Sixth Annual Canine Costume Carnival was held at Freeway Dog Park on Halloween day. The event was sponsored by the Allied Rockaway Foundation for Animal Recreation and Fitness. Prizes were awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place costumes. All the decked out doggies and their proud humans took a well-deserved bow-wow!

Also, at Riis Park Beach Bazaar, Rockapup and Wildfeast held the first ever Halloween Pawfest, which featured another costume contest later in the afternoon. First place went to a bulldog dressed as a woolly mammoth. He received one of Rockapup’s surfboard-shaped pet feeders and runner-ups received other treats. Rockaway Reef Being Restored

A new series of man-made reefs are being placed in the ocean off of the peninsula, restoring an existing reef. The new reef system will improve marine life habitat and bolster recreational opportunities for fishing and scuba diving in the area. The original Rockaway Reef located 1.6 nautical miles off the beach, was permitted in 1965 and has deteriorated since the last time new materials were added in 1985. The reef is now being restored after federal and state permits were secured. Transco-Williams, the company associated with the Rockaway Delivery Lateral Pipeline Project, will pay for the $1.6 million project. The first new materials were placed last week. The ma-

terials will include more than 450 sections of concrete coated steel pipe to provide valuable marine habitat for popular finfish species such as tautog, fluke, black sea bass and scup, as well as for crabs and lobsters. “The Rockaway Artificial Reef provides an amazing habitat for all types of marine life and a fantastic recreational destination for sport and commercial fishermen as well as scuba divers. The New York State DEC is to be commended for pursuing new permits and much needed enhancements at the site. When completed it will be a huge ecological benefit to this area and will provide additional recreational opportunities,” Dan Mundy, Jr. of Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers, said.

BENEFITS OF TRAVEL ARE ENDLESS! Travelers are natural conservationists. Seeing the world in all its magnificence is one of life’s greatest pleasures. If the earth’s incredible variety of land and seascapes are degraded, so is our travel experience. Travel and tourism organizations that rely on our planet’s splendors know that it is in their interest to protect the environment, and cruise lines are at the forefront of corporate environmental stewardship; after all, their business depends on healthy oceans, clean beaches and pristine destinations. After 5 years as a professional travel agent with CruiseOne, I’ve had the privilege of helping my clients plan family getaways, romantic escapes, and bucket list itineraries. I love playing a role in creating vacation memories, and cruising is one of my personal favorite escapes to nature. Studies show the health benefits of spending time in the natural world, and a cruise promises the pleasures of being on the water. And did you know that cruise lines are innovators in environmentally sustainable practices? While cruise ships comprise less than 1 percent of the global maritime community, they are leaders in developing responsible environmental practices and innovative technologies that lead the world’s shipping sector in reducing emissions and waste. Many cruise lines exceed environmental regulatory requirements in a number of areas. its impact on the environment and works closely with environmental regulators to protect air, oceans and ecosystems. For example, cruise lines are investing over $500 million in new technologies, and even more in cleaner fuels, to significantly reduce ships’ air emissions. No matter where on the earth they are, cruise line members of the Cruise Lines International Association must process all sewage through treatment systems in accordance with international requirements prior to discharge, and even then it’s only discharged many miles from shore. If you live in a coastal community, do you know how your municipality is treating sewage and how close to shore it discharges? Cruise lines exceed the practices of most water treatment facilities of coastal municipalities. Cruise ship waste management professionals recycle 60% more waste per person than the average person recycles on shore each day, recycling 80,000 tons of paper, plastic, glass and aluminum cans each year. In U.S. waters, the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Coast Guard oversee rigorous requirements on air, water, power, and waste, including provisions of the U.S. Clean Water Act. Environmental performance information is publicly and transparently available. Engaging over the years with groups like Sustainable Travel International, the Ocean Conservancy and Conservation International, the cruise industry is fully committed to doing its part to preserve the oceans in which they will transport 23 million travelers this year, as well as the destinations they visit. It’s both the right thing to do and fundamental to the future of the industry. With dozens of cruise lines and hundreds of itineraries to choose from, there’s something for everyone, and an experienced travel specialist can steer you toward the cruise for you. – Thank you, Aggie Batista

still turned him down. “It was raining and supposed to go down to the 20s that night and this jerk would rather let me suffer than let me stay there because I didn’t have ID. Churches also turned me away. I thought I’d have to sleep in a ditch somewhere but I stopped at a coffee shop and explained my situation and the manager wound up giving me a lift to the original hotel I was supposed to stay at. It started out as a bad experience but it wasn’t about the jerk that refused me or the churches. It was about the family that stepped up,” he said. Difficult terrain, weather and desolate routes were also among the obstacles that Brown faced. “I saw snow in Arizona,” he recalled, along with 20-degree nights. The hottest day was while running through Central Missouri. “There was a heat index of 115 with 90 percent humidity. I ran 27 miles that day. The only reason I finished was because I made a promise to these two female disabled veterans and the Wounded Warrior Project. I made a video for them, saying I was going to finish no matter how bad it was and I couldn’t let them down. I finished at this VFW Post in Saint Clair. They asked if I wanted anything to drink. I said ‘Give me an orange juice and a shot of tequila.’” Some routes were also difficult. “In the Mojave Desert, there was 100 miles of nothing, just straight highway, but at that point I had a Marine Corps Logistics officer with me, Chad Wade, who would drop a gallon of water for me every 10 miles. All the bushes were cactuses, so I couldn’t get close to them for shade and the temperatures would fluctuate like crazy there,” he said. Mountainous areas like the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania were also brutal. He also dealt with dust storms. “I was close to the New Mexico border and there was a week of high winds, so I couldn’t pitch my tent and these dust storms would roll through, so I had to keep a rag over my face and I lost all cellular and internet service, so it was just me and Mother Nature. It was pretty scary,” Brown said. Being barefoot presented its own challenges. “I picked up wires on the interstate. There were days where I had to cut open my soles and pull out wires or glass from my foot, but it heeled pretty quickly,” he said. He also had ankle trouble at some points. When faced with challenges, Brown did his best to remain calm. “In situations where you have no control, you just remember that at some point on the horizon, there’s comfort and safety and you just keep

going,” he said. As he moved further east, Brown found traffic to be an obstacle as well. “The last 100 miles were challenging because I had to run through heavy traffic. Traffic is scary, especially when you have no shoes on,” he said, adding that New Yorkers definitely noticed the lack of footwear. “Bare feet are the only thing left that will turn New Yorker’s heads. I got a lot of weird looks while running through Brooklyn,” he said. But he also got many high fives. While running through New York, he also had the support of the team from Charity Miles, an app Brown used to help raise money for various charities. On Halloween, Brown’s journey came to an end. He reached Riis Park with a team of family, friends and supporters and had his friend, Pat Hawko, who he did the run for, on video chat as he finished and took his plunge into the Atlantic. Afterwards, he celebrated at Riis Park Beach Bazaar, which happened to be hosting a pet costume contest. “It was awesome. There was really good food there. They had these pretty tacos with flower petals. Here I am with my family and friends and then there were like 30 dogs dressed up. I got to play with these puppies and ate tacos and had good IPA. It felt like they did it just for me,” Brown said. “I had never been to Rockaway before but it’s a place I’d go back to.” Despite finishing his trip on Saturday, Brown says it didn’t feel like a big ending. After all, he ran the New York City Marathon for the first time the next day, completing it barefoot. As Brown recovers in his hometown of Rhinebeck, he says the whole experience is slowly starting to hit him. It isn’t the end though. He plans to complete another cross country trek from southern Texas north to Canada with the Idiots Running Club sometime in the spring and he would like to do another east-to-west trek at some point, where he will focus on completing it much faster than the almost eight months this recent trip took. Brown plans to write a book about all of his experiences through the Bare Soul Project. For more info, check out www.thebaresoleproject. com.

explained. “We try to restore their joint systems to as close to textbook normal as possible.” Rohrs said that people’s pain may vary from simply not being able to play golf to not being able to walk to the mailbox, and that everybody’s body and injury is unique. “The same person can have a meniscus tear in each knee and have totally separate protocols for those injuries.” He went on to say that patients can alternatively do too much too fast or essentially nothing at all in an effort to get better. “A lot of the elderly patients come from the days of a doctor telling them that eight weeks of bedrest is all they need. But we know now that bedrest is the worst thing that you can do because your joints stiffen and your muscles get weaker.” WebMD and other internet sites have also proven to be a menace as patients can take matters in to their own hands. “We can progress you at the appropriate and safe pace. We’ll identify early on what the spectrum of care will be. Sometimes we get the patients who will wear a sling for three days and then take it off,” he said. Despite the challenges physical therapy presents, Rohrs said he

feels rewarded at the end of most days. “You’re here day after day listening to people’s complaints but when you look at someone who came in here, not being able to bend over to pick something up, and now they can mostly live their lives, it’s a great feeling,” he said. “My brother was a computer programmer and when I was looking to change careers he suggested going in to that field. But I couldn’t see myself sitting at a desk for eight-to-10 hours a day helping only my boss get rich.”

Sands Point was, like most other Rockaway businesses, affected by Hurricane Sandy. “Unfortunately all the equipment motors are located on the floor,” Rohrs said. The bleach stains on the tables in the main room still mark the water line. He has had to take out a number of loans to keep the business running but said that he is lucky. “For me it was only equipment. It wasn’t personal items or family photos that got destroyed. We have patients who come in still today and say things like ‘Such-and-such

just moved back in to their house.’” A lifelong resident of Oceanside, Rohrs commutes to Rockaway daily and has gained an appreciation for many of the people here. “We get a lot of firemen that come here and they can’t wait to get back to the firehouse, which I find remarkable,” he said. “I’ve also found a lot of teachers live in the area and I have to say, they tell the craziest stories, much more so than the cops.” While physical therapy is yearround, Rohrs generally competes in BBQ cook-offs from April to October. This year he won two grand championships in New Hampshire and Rhode Island and represented them in the Jack Daniels World Championship Barbeque Invitational in Lynchburg, Tennessee. “My proudest achievement is that last year I ranked 14th out of 3,000 teams across the country in brisket,” he said. Rohrs said that the best barbeque he has ever tasted was in Austin, Texas and recommends Hill Country in Manhattan as a good local choice. “If I could move anywhere just for the food, it would be the Austin-San Antonio area,” he said. Thankfully for his patients and hungry employees, he is perfectly happy in New York.

AHOY ROCKAWAY! ,AST 7EEK 4HIS 7EEK AND 4IL .EXT 4IME (Loyal Fishing Report readers: This column was originally scheduled to run in the 10-29 edition but space limited forced us to hold on to it for a week) Hello Rockaway Anglers (and non-anglers), welcome to this week’s Fishing Report! This week’s weather was pretty nice. The typical fall weather of a brisk chill in the morning (yes that was frost on your windshield last week) giving way to warm sun-soaked afternoons in Rockaway often makes you wonder, “Why do they close the beach so early in the season?” The weekend was sunny, rainy, and windy. We were good up until Sunday. Sunday started off rainy, but slowly gave way to clearing and even some late afternoon sunshine, but the N.W. wind was relentless. The tides are still a bit off this week as well with the last “Super Moon” of 2015 passing on the 27th of October. The local tidal range is greater in the fall than it is in the summer. The moon’s path rides high in the sky during the winter months. During the summer months the moon’s path is low on the horizon. We have some solid bass activity around the area at the local beaches even if a lot of them are “schoolies” (smaller fish). Striped bass have been hitting around the local bridges on clams, but with this past weekend’s winds they were hard to reach. More action on the beach this week with bass hitting from “Breezy Point” to “A.B.B.” (Atlantic Beach Bridge). Clams still seem to be the preferred choice of what the striped bass are eating in Rockaway. Black fish are active at the local reefs off shore, as well the jetties on the beaches and along the sea wall. The “Tog” (black fish) are eating clams, and green crabs and are probably wondering what happened to all the Fiddler Crabs. Porgies have all but disappeared, and not many blue fish have been around this week. This is usually the time of year when “Gorilla” Blues find their way into the back chasing bunker (Atlantic Menhaden). The bunker are there, we just need the “Gorilla” blue fish now to chase them up into the back. Be prepared anglers, have those “LARGE” popping plugs and LARGE swimming plugs at the ready. If you see large schools of “bunker” moving slowly way up into the back bay, that means something big and mean is slowly stalking the bunker, making them go up that way. These large schools of blue fish are actually blocking off the baitfish’s escape route. Waves of bunker can often be

The Rockaway Times

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2015

seen leaping out of the water when these big blue fish suddenly “blitz” (attack) them. This is also the time of year to try out just about every arsenal (lure) in your tackle box that you think a striped bass might commit suicide on. They (blue fish and striped bass) strike on large “popping” and “swimming” lures near the surface in the fall. We checked in with our local fishing stations, and here’s what they had to report. 4OM S 7AVE 3ERVICE 3TATION "AIT Tackle in Rockaway Park: We called and spoke with Tom at the shop, and he tells us that “It’s all about the beach,” if you are looking for striped bass. The bass are hitting on clams all along the beach with the larger bass just off of the beach and accessible (so far), only by boat. Rumors and scuttlebutt say some bass at 30” were taken. Tom also mentioned that the black fish are getting larger with more fish being caught in the 17” to 18” range this week, as compared to last week. No blue fish reported. "IG 2ON S &ISHING 3TATION IN (OW ard Beach: We gave the shop a ring and got the Chief himself, Big Ron. Ron informed us that there is plenty of black fish action, but they are still picking up many “Shorts” (black fish must be 16”). Big Ron tells us that there is some bass action at the Marine Parkway Bridge at night and the striped bass are accepting offers of “bass eels” as a midnight snack. Well that’s it anglers, just a few more weeks of fishing weather left, so try and make the MOST of them. AND THIS WEEK’S FISHING REPORT Well anglers (and non-anglers), it’s that time of year again. The Rockaway Times Fishing Report is heading to “DRY DOCK” for the season. I would like to THANK our contributors and of course our Rockaway Times’ readers. The Rockaway Times Fishing Report’s goal is to provide the Rockaway angler (and nonanglers) with accurate information on what species of fish and marine life are in our area. We promote conservation, pportsmanship, and most of all, friendship. Special thanks to Bernie Matzen, Mike Keller, Paul Tarramino, Big Ron, Dawn, and the crew at “Big Ron’s Fishing Station”, “Tom” at “Tom’s Wave service station bait & tackle” in Rockaway Park. A special thanks to my editor Kevin Boyle (for just putting up with me in general). I hope that everyone enjoyed reading it, as much as I enjoyed writing it. Have a safe winter season everybody and we’ll see you in the spring for flounder.

We think we see Gary and Susan Carroll, Linda Spadaro, Maureen Quigley, and Mark Spadaro. As far as we know it’s the first time a Rockaway Times Tee has made it to Greece. (Photo 2) Andy Feldman wore his shirt not knowing he was being thrown a surprise birthday party. We bet he was the best dressed guy there!

Keeping Track – Locals Running and Running Fast The invitational portion of the Cross Country season is over and it is now championship season. For Alex Goldberg that meant defending his CHSAA Brooklyn-Queens title, and with a season best of 13:43, he matched the feat of Devin Rocks as two-time champion. Molloy teammate Christian Lanzetta placed 19th. For the Archdiocese of NY, Aidan Donohue of Xavier placed 20th in 14:05, while James Lunny ran 15:14 and Frank McVeigh ran 15:35. Jackie Thompson of Notre Dame Academy took second in the Archdiocese for the Varsity girls in 16:03 while her cousin Kayleigh Gilroy grabbed sixth place in BQ. Carolyn Crocker finished seventh and Caitlin Drury 18th. The freshmen had an outstanding day led by Anthony Markle with a 9:24, good for BQ fifth. Close behind were Matt McDade in 8th at 9:41, Kevin Moriarty in 10th at 9:48, Jack McDade in 14th at 10:09 and Terence Mullin at 17th in 10:33. For the Archdiocese, Ryan Meade of Regis was the top local in 10:14 with Terence Moriarty immediately behind in the same time and Dylan Abernethy, two more spots back.

Paige McDade was top local female with a 12:38 for BQ 7th and Kate Wrynn was 12th with 13:23. Intersectional championships are next for the HS Harriers. On the collegiate side, Conor Gallagher placed third in the East Coast Conference championship for Molloy College with a blazing 25:10. Brother Liam Gallagher placed 34th in 28:10. Patrick Goldberg of Mount St. Vincent held the Skyline championship lead at the halfway mark before relinquishing to a third-place finish in 29:00. Jimmy Buckley returned to action for Scranton with a 28:54 for 32nd in the Landmark Conference championship. Devin Rocks hit 29:59 in the Atlantic 10 championships for Fordham. Kathleen Woods continued her run as Fairfield’s #1 with a 25th place finish in the MAAC championships in 22:28. NCAA Regionals are next. Congratulations to the St. Francis de Sales CYO team on another successful season that included Diocesan Championships in two divisions, and finally kudos to the members of Team Kevin and all those who ran in the NYC Marathon.
