The Show Will Go On BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE LITTLE NORTH POLE By Marina Cregan

“Corona can’t stop Santa!” says Joe Mure, the mastermind behind the scenes of the Little North Pole in Neponsit. The Little North Pole, located at 144-03 Newport Avenue, has been a holiday charity event that has thrilled children here in the Rockaways for decades.

However, what most people do not know, is the amount of time and effort that goes into decorating and organizing this event for the community. On Saturday, November 7, Mure and countless volunteers unloaded numerous trucks filled with Christmas decorations and began the month-long decorating process. “There is a lot of work

that needs to be done, and this is just the beginning. Beginning the first Saturday after Halloween, we are here every weekend, working, adding decorations, and setting up until the actual day of the event,” Mure said. However, due to COVID-19, this year was certainly different from past years. All volunteers

abided by social distancing guidelines, had masks on at all times, and were provided with gloves. Along the trees outside the house, as well on all doors of the house, were signs stating: “Please wear your mask and practice social distancing for Continued on page 4

THE SHOW WILL GO ON Continued from Page 3 your safety. Thank you.” Mure stressed that these signs, as well as many additional signs will be added for the day of the lighting ceremony, ensuring that the Little North Pole will be conducted in a safe manner. The details and date of that event are still up in the air.

“There are a lot of uncertainties going forward, but we at the Little North Pole are working hard to make sure that we

continue to create memories for each and every child here in Rockaway,” Mure said. Volunteers of all ages worked hard unloading the trucks full of Christmas decorations, and expressed how happy they were to help. One volunteer, Nino Sclafani said, “Joe Mure is a great man. No, actually, he’s the best man for what he does with the Little North Pole and for this community. It is the least I can do to help make this year’s Little North Pole possible.” Mure and another volunteer at the Little North Pole, Tony Orzano, emphasized how this event could not be possible without the continuous help of so many. Orzano said, “I want to stress how important all these guys are. They put so much time, effort, and energy into helping us with the Little North Pole.” Mure and Orzano were so grateful for the help from so many members of the community. Not only were they appreciative of the many volunteers who came to help set up the Little North Pole on Saturday, but also for the many vendors that

have already agreed to help on the day of the event. “I would like to give a special thanks to Call A Head, Visconti at Canarsie Market, and the House of Holiday for their generosity and help,” Mure said. The Little North Pole event is held in an effort to give back to the community, as well as to raise awareness and donations for children that live with juvenile diabetes. Since the beginning, the main goal of this event is to put a smile on every child’s face, while simultaneously spreading Christmas cheer. It was important for members of the Little North Pole to hold the event this year, because they believe that the children will not only enjoy it, but they also need a bit of normalcy this year, even if it will look a little different. Keeping this main goal in mind, Mure and his volunteers are dedicated to continuing the tradition of the Little North Pole, while ensuring that everyone stays healthy and safe. “Do we continue to raise money for the children that live with juvenile diabetes? Yes, but the ques-

tion will be, how do we do this and how do we keep it safe?” Mure said. Although the event date and particulars are still unsettled, Mure will stress to families that they cannot be gathered in large crowds, and all lines will be following social distance guidelines. Additionally, in order to attend the event, all attendees must be wearing masks. Although this year’s Little North Pole may be different, the message of giving back to the children in this community and raising awareness for juvenile diabetes is still at the heart of the The Little North Pole’s purpose. As Mure looked at the decorations being installed on Saturday, he announced, “Christmas is not canceled, in fact, it’s starting early for the Rockaways!” To help support The Little North Pole’s effort to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, consider stopping by The Little North Pole in December (Dates TBA) or donating online at http://www2. jdrf.org/goto/LittleNorthPole

Absentee? I’ll Say I need to rant. I was going to write a letter to the editor but I was afraid The Rockaway Times wouldn’t print it. There’s been a lot of count-all-the-votes and stop-countingthe-votes noise but in my book it’s more like start the vote count. I was a regular boy scout johnny-come-early with my absentee ballot. I mailed it September, wait I gotta put that in caps, SEPTEMBER 30 and they still haven’t friggin’ counted my vote. Which could definitely sway things.

It’s 36 days. I have the receipt. It was reported that a full week after Election Day, just 74% of votes in New York have been counted. I know he’s been busy writing a book about the pandemic but you’d think Governor Cuomo would have found the time to fix the Board of Elections. He could have fixed it pre-pandemic. He could have fixed in since 2010. He’s in charge, he’s been in charge of a system that sucks. He can’t even blame de Blasio for this mess. You’d think, all states,

after hanging chads in 2000, we’d be in a better place. But the farce be with you. That’s not to say there haven’t been technological advances. The beauty of absentee ballots is that you can track your ballot online. The horror of absentee ballots is you can track your ballot and discover: The Post Office has your completed ballot. (And still has it 36 days later). And without my vote, how am I supposed to know if I’m a judge or not? Other than a candidate’s family members, nobody knows anybody running for civil court judge or dog catcher. One vote could really make a difference. A lot of vot-

ers leave the choices blank –which I see as an opportunity. I write my name in for a judge slot hoping I can wear a robe (and sweats underneath, of course). People who follow this stuff know Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck get a lot of write-in votes. I’m prepared to send Bill Barr in to challenge those cartoons and declare me the winner. I’ve just got to get the vote counted. (I’m not sure exactly what line or judgeship I voted for but …details, details). The real reason I do a write-in is because I do want to make sure my other friggin’ votes are counted. Weeks after the vote is certified, you can ask for results from the Board

of Elections. In theory, you should see the names of people who got write-ins, including yourself if you so voted. But it’s not always the case. I’ve checked and a couple of times and there’s been no sign of me on the votes tally. I won’t go as far as to say Cuomo ordered somebody to remove my name but I will say he’s in charge of a system that won’t reliably record your vote. And now I learn, if they do count my vote, it might not be until Thanksgiving. Grrrrr….ok, rant over. My vote may not be counted but next time, I’m asking you to vote for me. I want to beat Mickey Mouse fair and square.

***** Congratulations to President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris. ***** A heartfelt Veterans Day salute of thanks to the many people who’ve served to protect the freedoms of our great nation. November 11 marked the day we remember those who served. And November 12 is the day we remember those who lost their lives when Flight 587 crashed into Belle Harbor in 2001. ***** Who knows, he might’ve been busy writing a book, but Governor Cuomo should’ve found time to fix the Board of Elections and the election process. He’s been governor for ten years. ***** City Councilman Donovan Richards will be the next Queens Borough President come Janu-

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2020 ary, which means a special election will be held for his council seat. One candidate who just declared is Shaun Rux, former principal at MS 53, the Brian Piccolo school in Far Rockaway. Rux got national recognition in 2012 for helping turn around the school from an F to a C and achieving 90% attendance among students. One of his tactics was creating “Rux Bux,” a school currency which was awarded to kids for good behavior and showing up on time. Rux Bux could be used for school supplies or special lunches. He made a difference. Now he’s looking to do the same at the city level. ***** Happy 80th birthday to Monsignor John Bracken. The muchloved priest who helped make St. Francis de Sales parish thrive celebrates his birthday on Sunday. ***** The Graybeards and RIBS are sponsoring a food drive and will be picking up food supplies to restock food pantries throughout the peninsula on Saturday, November 14 from Beach 117th to Beach 149th. If you’ve gotten a

blue bag, please fill it and leave it out before 9 a.m. If your donation does not get picked up, you can drop it off at St. Francis de Sales. In this year of Covid and high unemployment, this food drive is critically important. ***** City Councilman Eric Ulrich who backed President Trump according to an article by the Queens Daily Eagle in September, tweeted on Saturday: “The American people have spoken. Congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. Election 2020 is over. It’s time to unite our country and allow for the peaceful transition of power.” ***** Community Board 14 will hold its November monthly meeting on November 17 at 7 p.m. As with recent meetings, it will be a virtual ZOOM meeting. For more info, call 718-473-7100. ***** The city that keeps on giving. Rockaway is getting another shelter, this one to be built at 1252 Brunswick Avenue in Far Rockaway, the Cathedral church

site. According to Jon Gaska of the Community Board, it will house 72 adult families and be operated by the Black Vets For Social Justice. ***** The new skate park off the boardwalk at Beach 90th is nothing if not diverse. People of all races. You’ve got men, kids, women, skateboards, bikes. It’s a beehive with more than bees. ***** Groin update: The Army Corps says by March “we will have completed the groin work near Beach 32nd and Beach 36th streets. We cannot work in this area after March until September because of the endangered species restrictions. That is why, by February, will be starting the groin work near Beach 149th and Beach 145th. This work will continue, along with groin work near Beach 140th and Beach 135th, until the fall of 2021, and then the work will shift to complete the groins near Beach 92nd and Beach 98th. Because of the seasonal requirements, the schedule is pretty complex.”

It was a smaller, shorter ceremony this year due to coronavirus concerns, but it didn’t stop the American Legion Daniel M. O’Connell Post #272 from holding their annual Veterans Day ceremony to thank and remember those who have served this country. On the morning of Wednesday, November 11, American Legion members and veterans Mike Honan, Michael Menschel and Jim Hurley led prayers and speeches to mark the occasion, followed by Army veteran Brian Galarza who played Taps on the bugle. There were no major announcements of the ceremony to keep the crowd to a minimum, but a small crowd gathered as people in cars drove by and took a moment to thank the veterans for their service. Post #272 signed a $68,000 contact with Barry, entrusting her with creating a statue that perfectly encapsulated the womThe women of West Point, along with sculptor Eileen Barry en of the armed at the dedication ceremony in 1989. forces. “It was a great group of men ue on Beach 94th Street as they marked the occasion on No- and women and the fact that vember 11, but they didn’t for- they were interested in a statue get a powerful tribute across the for women was marvelous, instreet, dedicated to the women spiring and hopeful. honor and responsibility,” Barry said. After speaking to military women, it was clear that certain attributes had to shine through in her work—that of power, strength and dignity. “These were strong women that went into the military. It took a lot of guts and belief in themselves. That impressed me the most. They were so sure of themselves and many of them were very young. But they believed in themselves, therefore they believed in the country,” Barry said. She wanted her monument to reflect the same. And she pulled it off. “You see it in her face, in her posture, in her fist, you see that strength, you feel that dignity and you know that she’s not a shrinking violet,” Barry said. Those of the American Legion Daniel M. O’Connell Post #272 felt the same. After being presented with a 21-inch maquette, or model, of Barry’s concept, they approved. “Fortunately, they liked it,” Barry said. So she continued on with her eightfoot bronze sculpture that would show the first women veteran in all her glory, decked in military fatigues, with her helmet at her side and a bag of vital information on her back. Unfortunately, not everyone approved. As they were preparing to install Barry’s work next to the Doughboy monument, Post #272 ran into a snag. The city’s Art Commission deemed it “not strong enough artistically” and would not permit it on city land. It was a hurdle those of the American Legion, which had good intentions, did not know they would encounter. ''When we started on the project, we had never heard of an Art Commission,'' Jerry Klein, Post 272's treasurer told the New York Times in July 1989. However, Post #272 was granted permission to place it across the street from the Doughboy, for up to a year, to allow time to find another location. On September 24, 1989, the First Women Veterans Monument was dedicated in a ceremony, surrounded by military

women. The female members of West Point came down for the day for the dedication. “It was a wonderful day,” Barry said. To solidify her importance, Barry also made visits to local schools to explain the significance of the sculpture. “I thought it was important for kids to understand what it was and why it was important,” she said. Thirty-one years later, it seems that lesson stuck. The Women Veterans Monument is still standing. In a 2003 New York Times article, then NYC Parks commissioner Adrian Benepe said, ''It's one of the few works of art that stayed on beyond their temporary status because there was community sentiment in favor of them.” All these years later, it seems this bronze woman warrior, is showing no signs of losing this battle. The piece is regularly maintained, including undergoing special preservation work following Hurricane Sandy in 2013, and is noted as one of the city’s many monuments on the Parks Department website. All these years later, Barry says she still pays her a visit. “I come out every six to eight months, just to say hello,” she said. Although she says the patina renovation work has changed it somewhat, she is happy to know that the statue hasn’t been vandalized, and most importantly, is still standing. “I think it’s a testament to the sculpture. People do like it. It’s not a minimal, abstract piece. It’s real and true and I think that when people come up to it, it connects with people,” she said. Barry says she hopes it connects in an even bigger way, and that her work doesn’t remain as the only women veterans monument in NYC. “I think it is a strong, powerful testament to the men and women of the American Legion Post #272 for commissioning this, but it’s also sad that she’s the only one. Hopefully it will be understood that this is an oversight by NYC. There should be more of these monuments dedicated to the women who fought for this country,” Barry said.

A Swan Song With a Hopeful Ending By Katie McFadden

A Jamaica Bay waterfowl almost faced its swan song, but thanks to a few dedicated animal lovers, this lucky bird turned out to be the main star of one of those “only in New York” kind of stories, with a happy ending. Swans have become the subject of many photos since taking residence in local waters. Their families, with new offspring almost every season, have become a delight to those who spend time on Jamaica Bay. So the sight of an unwell swan at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in recent weeks tugged at the heart strings of visitors. Bernadette O Callaghan of Rockaway Park is familiar with swans in the bay as an avid kayaker and volunteer for the Community Boathouse, so when she decided to go for a walk for the first time around the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge on Sunday, November 1,

she was surprised to see a swan acting peculiar on land. “It was the most tragic thing you could see. The poor thing looked like somebody had beat it with a baseball bat. This majestic bird, that is usually so elegant, was all over the place. It couldn’t stand up. It was trying to get back into the water and was using its neck to support itself,” O Callaghan said. “I watched helplessly, and it was eventually able to get into the water and

I thought at least that was a good sign, thinking it would be able to get food and survive.” However, still concerned, O Callaghan sought advice. She took to Facebook to post photos of the swan, including in the Community Boathouse page for input. People suggested various organizations to contact, including the Wild Bird Fund. An acquaintance, Jeannine Riekers, of Broad Channel, who had posted about another swan that was found with a fish hook caught in it, also reached out to O Callaghan to ask if it was the same one. They realized this was a different bird in distress and began brainstorming ideas to help. Riekers suggested taking a boat out to it, but with the swan in a pond, it was not a possibility. O Callaghan considering bringing

a kayak to the Refuge the next day to try to reach the swan, but it poured rain that Sunday. The next day, Riekers went to the Refuge to try to locate the swan but couldn’t find it. She also contacted the Wild Bird Fund, which was aware of the swan and also said they had tried to locate it but couldn’t find it. It seemed all hope was lost. A few days later, they learned what came of the swan they affectionately named Swanky. In a Facebook post by the Wild Bird Fund, the rescue organization detailed the ordeal of Continued on page 20

A SWAN SONG WITH A HOPEFUL ENDING Continued from Page 15 a former employee who happened upon the swan and brought it to them, by subway of course. Ariel Cordova-Rojas, of Spanish Harlem, rode her bike to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to do some bird watching on Thursday, November 5, the eve of her 30th birthday. She didn’t know her pre-birthday celebration would turn into a rescue. “I was about a mile into the west loop and I saw the swan laying on the grass and didn’t think much of it until I realized it was there for a good 10 minutes, which was odd as it was about to get dark and they’re normally not there by the water’s edge by themselves. I approached it slowly and this swan did not move at all, which was weird because swans can be aggressive, loud and territorial.” As she got closer, the swan attempted to move, and Cordova-Rojas confirmed some-

thing was not right when the swan was unable to stand and was wobbling. She took action. Throwing her coat over the swan’s head, she was able to pick her up. Then she began to seek help. Having previously worked for the Wild Bird Fund based in Manhattan, she tried to contact some of her colleagues, but nobody was available. So she carried the 17-pound swan to the beginning of the trail to try to find assistance from a ranger. Unfortunately, the center was closed for the night. She then contacted Brooklyn ACC, who told her they would send someone, but after waiting for half an hour, no help arrived. However, a concerned passerby did. Heather O’Mara, who happens to be a friend of O Callaghan, offered to drive Cordova-Rojas to the train station. However, Cordova-Rojas still had her bike in tow. O’Mara contacted another friend, who drove the woman’s bike to the Howard Beach train station, as she drove Cordova-Rojas and the

The Rockaway Times

swan. O’Mara’s friend happened to be an MTA employee and helped bring Cordova-Rojas’ bike on to the train to make the ride a bit easier. A swan on a train might raise some tourist’s eyebrows, but Cordova-Rojas says like true New Yorkers, most were unphased by the odd cargo. “Nobody even took a second glance,” she said. And the swan took it in stride. “She was very docile. She made a little bit of noise but didn’t move much because she was so weak,” she said. Fortunately, the swan didn’t have to make the full trip to the Upper West Side by train. Cordova-Rojas met with colleagues around Nostrand Ave, who helped her complete the trip by car to the Wild Bird Fund. After a full examination, the female swan, which has since been dubbed Bae, after Jamaica Bay, was found to be a bit underweight and had lead toxicity, which caused the bird’s ataxia, or inability to coordinate its muscles. Cordova-Rojas says this is a

common ailment in local waterfowl as they sometimes ingest lead anchors or fishing hooks. The swan is undergoing full treatment with the appropriate medications to draw out the lead and according to Cordova-Rojas, is in stable condition, but complications can arise during treatment. However, hopes are high that Bae will make it and will be brought back to Jamaica Bay after rehabilitation, which is the main mission of the Wild Bird Fund. As for O Callaghan, she hopes to join that mission. After learning about the Wild Bird Fund, she hopes to volunteer for the group to help other birds in distress. She’s also happy that this one swan’s story, hopefully has a good ending. “I think this is the ultimate lesson in survival. Never give up, don’t lose hope, someone will be there for you,” O Callaghan said. “Stories do have a happy ending.” Photos by Josh Spector and Ariel Cordova-Rojas.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that Nicholas Thompson, 35, was arraigned in Queens Supreme Court on Monday, November 9, following a grand jury handing up a 13-count indictment charging the defendant with aggravated vehicular homicide, manslaughter, DWI and other crimes for a deadly car crash in September in Far Rockaway. Katz said, “A car hitting speeds of nearly 100 mph was a death sentence for a 32-year-old woman in the passenger seat of this defendant’s car. The defendant allegedly got drunk and then drove recklessly and with total disregard for every person on the road. Thompson, of Redfern Avenue in Far Rockaway, was arraigned before Queens Supreme Court Justice Gene Lopez on a 13-count indictment charging the defendant with aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular manslaughter in the first and second degree, manslaughter in the second degree, criminally negligent hom-

icide, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the first and third degree. Thompson must return to court on November 23, 2020. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison. According to the charges, soon after 6:30 p.m. on September 26, 2020, Thompson was behind the wheel of a 2015 BMW headed eastbound on Rockaway Boulevard. The defendant was allegedly reaching speeds up to 97 mph. After passing police, the BMW veered off the roadway, slammed through a metal fence, travelled approximately 100 yards and crashed into a scrub of trees. Jolenna Favor, of Far Rockaway, was killed in the passenger seat. Police allegedly smelled alcohol on Thompson’s breath. Thompson refused to submit to a Breathalyzer test. A Court-authorized search warrant test revealed him to have a blood-alcohol level almost twice the legal limit.

A local man has been charged with arson, criminal mischief and other crimes for allegedly setting a fire to his own tractor truck in B&M Towing’s lot in Arverne after the vehicle had been impounded. On Wednesday, November 4, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, joined by New York City Fire Department Commissioner Daniel Nigro, announced that Egor Spiridonov, 30, faces charges for the fire that burned not only his, but several other vehicles, as well as a building on the lot in July 2020, causing more than $100,000 in damages. District Attorney Katz said, “The defendant allegedly set a fire that not only destroyed his property but others’ belongings as well and then he tried to profit from his own alleged criminal actions. An FDNY investigation foiled the defendant’s plans. I want to thank Commissioner Nigro’s team for their hard work. We will be prosecuting the defendant to the fullest extent of the law.” FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro said, “FDNY Fire Marshals thoroughly investigate every arson fire and work diligently to apprehend those who use fire to harm others or for financial gain. This fire was a senseless act that escalated to a second alarm, damaging property and endangering the lives of more than 100 firefighters who responded to bring it under control. I commend them and our Fire Marshals for their outstanding work.” District Attorney Katz said Spiridonov allegedly targeted B&M Towing after a worker towed the Volvo tractor truck that the defendant owns with his girlfriend. The vehicle was impounded for allegedly having several overdue parking violations. According to the investigation, Spiridonov’s girlfriend - who also jointly co-owns a business with the defendant - made multiple calls to retrieve the vehicle from the tow lot, without success. On July 20, 2020, between 5 and 5:30 a.m. video surveillance allegedly shows the defendant enter B&M Towing’s lot on Alm-

eda Avenue in Arverne and set fire to the 2008 Volvo Tractor and a flatbed tow truck, according to the complaint. According to the surveillance video, Spiridonov and another unidentified individual allegedly entered the tow yard from atop a shipping container in the rear of the property. The defendant pulled two bottles from inside his clothing, approached a tow truck and doused it with liquid, believed to have been an accelerant. The defendant then allegedly poured liquid onto the flatbed tow truck. Moments later, using a lighter, he reached through the window of the flatbed tow truck and started a fire. In an instant, there was a vapor explosion that blew flames directly into his face. Spiridonov reeled back and clutched his face. Undeterred, the defendant allegedly continued on to his vehicle and set it on fire as well. On July 24, 2020, the defendant and his girlfriend contacted the insurance company and allegedly reported their tractor, valued at approximately $30,000, completely destroyed. The defendant reportedly told an insurance agent he had been on a fishing trip when the truck was damaged. Investigators reported that when Spiridonov was interviewed, he had injuries to his face that were not present before the alleged arson incident, including visible signs of burn injuries and trauma to his left eye and face. Spiridonov was arraigned last Monday, November 2, before Queens Criminal Court Judge Scott Dunn on a complaint charging him with criminal mischief in the second degree, arson in the third degree, insurance fraud in the third degree, falsifying business records in the first degree, trespass and reckless endangerment in the second degree. Judge Dunn ordered the defendant to return to Court on February 10, 2021. If convicted, Spirindonov faces up to 15 years in prison. The investigation was conducted by Fire Marshal Stephen Laureno of the FDNY and the New York City Police Department’s 100th Precinct.

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Weight Loss Surgery Bariatric, or weight-loss, surgery is considered for those with obesity, often morbid obesity, and serious health issues or the risk of developing serious health issues like heart disease and strokes, high blood pressure, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, sleep apnea, and type 2 diabetes. After failing multiple attempts at weight loss and lifestyle modification, a person can be considered for bariatric surgery if their body-mass index (BMI, an estimate of body fat based on height and weight) is 40 or over or 35 to 39.9 and he/she has serious health issues like hypertension and diabetes. Rarely, a person

may be recommended for a bariatric procedure if their BMI is 30 to 34 and they have very serious, life-threatening health issues. Of course, a person must be healthy enough to undergo surgery. Prior to undergoing bariatric surgery, a prospective patient will undergo extensive medical and psychiatric screening and will be followed closely by a dietician. In addition, he/she must be willing to commit to make permanent changes in diet and lifestyle. Also, harmful eating behaviors, like binge eating, must be addressed. Women of child-bearing age should consider a reliable form of birth control,

They count on you...

as the likelihood of pregnancy will often increase after the surgery. Some forms of bariatric surgery limit the amount that can be eaten, and some forms reduce the body’s ability to absorb nutrients. Some procedures do both. Bariatric surgery is expensive and may not be fully covered by health insurance. There are several types of bariatric surgery. All involve changes to the stomach, especially to the fundus, or top of the stomach. The fundus is where most of the hunger-inducing hormone ghrelin is produced in response to an empty stomach. There is the gastric bypass, known as a Rouxen-Y gastrectomy, where a walnut-sized stomach pouch is created and is connected to the mid small intestine. In a sleeve gastrectomy, half of the stomach plus most of the fundus is removed, leaving only about one third of the stomach still intact. There is also a biliopancreatic diversion with a duodenal switch, which is too complicated for this discussion. Sleeve gastrectomy usually results in more weight loss than the

Page 29 less-invasive adjustable gastric band procedure, but it produces less weight loss than gastric bypass. Like any surgery, bariatric surgery has risks. There are immediate, or short-term risks, like bleeding, infection, blood clots, anesthesia reactions, anastomotic leaks (anastomosis is the process of connecting, or sewing, hollow tissues to each other), and breathing problems. Long term risks include intestinal obstruction or blockage, gallstones, hernias, malnutrition, ulcers, reflux symptoms, and vomiting. The risk of death, either short or long term, is thankfully very low. Patients, especially after sleeve gastrectomy, are generally able to resume their usual activities shortly after surgery. Most patients will have a reduced appetite, although they are still able to enjoy food and participate normally in social activities. Most patients report improved quality of life. Hopeful Helps We are all hoping for unity and a brighter future. Hope is a powerful word and can help carry one in this difficult journey called life. Never give up hope. No one knows the absolute truth and I, for one, believe in miracles. Call me an idealist, but it feeds my soul to be hopeful in these times. I hope you are safe, I hope you are not suffering, I hope you are not lonely, I hope there is a cure for cancer one day. I have held this one prayer in my heart for as long as I can remember. Prayer, Hope, Faith, Love and

Peace. Healing is in the return to oneself. We are fragmented and weaving ourselves back together will take time and a lot of hard work. When I dwell in peace, I extend it unconditionally towards all. If we could all move on and accept all of our diversities we would improve our relations with one another. Finding in your hearts the ability to see what others are going through is empathy. As I write this column, it’s 72 degrees, the sky is clear blue and the sun is shining on us all. We are alive on this beautiful

earth now. Peace can be in the air for all sides. Let’s join together for a better world. I know it is a miracle to be here now. Every day we have 24 hours to live, breathe and be happy. If you are suffering, we are here for you. Sometimes we need a mantra when we feel stuck in our heads and bodies. One that comes to mind is, “The fire within me burns through all blocks and fears. I repeat this mantra many times and I usually feel relieved of my worries and fears. “I have been absolutely terrified my entire life, but I never let it keep me from doing a single thing of what I wanted to do. -Georgia O’Keefe. Breathe in, I am safe, breath out I am free. Live your life as best you can without your worries. Andrew Israel would say, “In the end, life is about joy. Let go of the hatred. Forgive and move on. Anyone who has done you harm, forgive them. It may take time for healing to happen but forgiveness is necessary. Words can be hurtful so choose your words carefully. Have empathy

The Rockaway Times for those who don’t think like you. It can be so discouraging to listen to people condemning one another. Stay positive and be the change. Respect one another and treat each person you meet with a humble heart. Be kind, be honest. Clarity leads us to end suffering. “Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul and sings the tune without words. And never stops at all. And sweetest in the gale is heard: and sore must be the storm that could abash the little bird that kept so many warm. I’ve heard it in the chilliest land, and on the strangest sea: yet, never, in extremity, it asked a crumb of me. -Emily Dickinson My prayer is for our great country to be united and strong again. Let us never forget what a precious gift it is to live in the United States of America. We are guests in this magnificent land of the free. May you all be safe, healthy and free of suffering. We can do this together. Namaste: The divine light in me recognizes the divine light in you.

Wrestle Talk BEHIND THE SCENES - SHOW DATE By Eric Jayden

Results for the WWE SmackDown Show on November 6, 2020 from the WWE Thunderdome in Orlando, Florida: Sasha Banks defeated Bayley. King Corbin defeated Rey Mysterio. Ruby Riott defeated Natalya & Zelina Vega. Seth Rollins defeated Otis. Jey Uso defeated Kevin Owens. The Match of the Night was Sasha Banks versus Bayley. These two competitors have a long history of fighting each other and they both never fail to pull out an excellent match. There was great back and forth action, which translated to good storytelling. I'm looking forward to seeing them face off against each other down the line. Today, I figured I would take the time to answer (in depth) a question that I get frequent-

ly. Majority of the readers have asked "How is it behind the scenes during a show as a wrestler?" Ok, let's break it down. As a performer, I would get a time that I would need to arrive at the venue, which is the "Call Time," which is usually two to three hours before the start of the show. Once I arrive at the venue, I seek out the Promoter or Booker to officially check in with them and from there I go to the designated locker room. I drop off my wrestling gear and meet up with the rest of the performers. Now, unless I was aware in advance who my opponent was going to be, I would wait for the Booker to post up "The Call Sheet," which is a list of the wrestling matches for the show in order. The call sheet also indicates when your match starts, how long the match would last and in many circumstances, who is "The Agent" of the match.

An Agent is a person who breaks down the type of match the promoter or booker wants you to perform. Once I find out what time my match starts, who is my opponent and how the match will be performed I go back into the locker room and start doing warm up exercises/stretches in order to loosen my body and avoid any potential injuries. Afterwards, I meet up with my opponent to discuss what moves/ holds we are going to perform and how we are going to end the match which is called "The Finish." From there, I continue doing exercises and start getting ready for the match. I start putting on my wrestling gear, put oil on my body, wet my hair and I head down to the entrance of the show which is called "The Gorilla Position." There, I get last-minute instructions on the match, speak to my opponent

one last time and I start getting myself into character. Once, my entrance theme starts playing I come out and perform the match. After the match, I meet up with my opponent to thank them for performing the match with me. I then seek out the Booker to get a critique of the match. Wrestling shows can be pretty exciting full of action and drama, but a lot of work goes on behind the scene in order to make sure you, the fans, have a memorable experience.
