Curtains on The Theater Building A movie theater, a roller rink, live theater, a beer distributor, a pasta restaurant, an after-hours joint, the first home of the Rockaway Artists Alliance…those are just some things that called the Park Theater home through the years. But for all its various businesses, it became mostly known as a vacant eyesore as the owner, Michael Koening, let the building fall into disrepair.

It stood empty for almost 20 years. Now it’s gone. The building was finally demolished this week.

In the summer of 2018, the building was sold for more than $6 million and was immediately earmarked for development by the Marcal Group, the group building new condos and commercial space directly across the street.

The Rockaway Times got a last glance inside the building in 2018. Some photos here (including the one with a chandelier) suggest some of the grandeur of the old structure, but the place was crumbling and

was beyond rehabilitation.

As for what’s planned, Seth Caller of Marcal, said he couldn’t comment at this point.

Previously, Marcal indicated that additional residential and commercial units were planned.

Community Board 14 November Meeting Recap

Just short of three weeks after the last Community Board 14 meeting, CB14 convened again on Tuesday, November 12 for their monthly discussion of issues impacting Rockaway.

The crowd was thin, and the agenda was small for Tuesday’s meeting as the last meeting, which had been rescheduled to later in the month due to conflicts, was jam-packed with items to discuss, leaving little to focus on for the November meeting. But it still came with reason to celebrate. The Board enjoyed cupcakes from Fat Cardinal Bakery in celebration of Jonathan Gaska’s 30th anniversary as CB14 District manager. The anniversary was acknowledged before jumping into the bulk of the meeting.

In a quick report, Gaska spoke about some education and transportation issues. He advised the

over a future residential development on Cornaga Avenue, which will bring another 253 units of affordable housing within two buildings to the peninsula. The project can be built As Of Right and will not require a Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) review, but the developers want to keep CB14 in the loop about the project.

Chairperson Dolores Orr discussed the recent charter items that were approved on election day, which will impact CB14.

Mainly, the ULURP issue that passed will mean that community boards will now have more time to review land use items, extending the review period from 60 days to 75 or 90 days, depending on when the item’s application is submitted. Orr also provided an update on National Grid’s moratorium on new gas hookups, mentioning the news of Governor Cuomo threatening to revoke the utility’s downstate license if

Gaska also advised that there will be a street renaming ceremony for Barbara Smith at noon on Saturday, November 16 at Beach 25th and Deerfield Road. He also gave a heads up about discussions

She also announced that St. John’s Episcopal Hospital will be having a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, November 21, from 4:30 to 7 p.m., to unveil their new lobby, pharmacy, café and reflection room. Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato touched upon the recently released study on the Rockway Beach Rail, which will come at a high price tag. Amato was optimistic that it will happen, but likely not soon. “It can be done.

Rockaway WISH Salutes 2019's Local Women of Distinction This Saturday!

This Saturday, November 16, three local women hailing from Rockaway, Breezy Point and Broad Channel will be honored by nonprofit all-woman organization, Rockaway WISH (Women Inspired to Support & Help) at their Ladies Who Brunch Seventh Annual Award Ceremony for their exemplary leadership in the community through public service. These women all have the maternal instinct in not just that they are mothers, but women who also “mother” the community through causes dear to their hearts.

The three 2019 honorees and their list of community advocacy accomplishments are: Rockaway Park resident Diane Erhard, known for her dedicated work with St. Francis de Sales Parish’s bereavement ministry; Breezy Point’s Terry Purpura Johnson, who with her sisters have been steadfast fundraisers for the EB Research Partnership, a nonprofit foundation dedicated to finding a cure for Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a life-threatening genetic skin disease that affects up to 50,000 people in the U.S. alone; and Broad Channel resident, Michelle Green, known for her fervor in local efforts to improve her community’s climate resiliency as a member of the Broad Channel Civic Association and B.C.’s NY Rising Committee.

According to WISH Board Vice President Loretta Courtney, the organization with over 300 members has held the Ladies Who Brunch award ceremony since Hurricane Sandy.

“After our organization’s local efforts in helping Rockaway residents get back on their feet post-Sandy, we began this event to honor the great women leaders of Rockaway. We

gained such a momentum as an organization with so many ladies stepping up for a variety of causes. Our inaugural honorees were Meghan Flanagan, Marybeth Bevaqua and Stephanie Wagner, all local women who truly exemplify how strong and philanthropic the women of Rockaway are,” Courtney said. In 2018, WISH decided to make the award ceremony a biennial event.

Since 2006, WISH has been at the forefront of local volunteer efforts, aiding neighbors in times of need. According to their mission statement, “We promote participation in charitable events, particularly those that bring attention to and support causes that affect the lives of women and children. We are always looking for motivated women who would like to do what they can to support and help the Rockaway community.” Today the nonprofit organization boasts 16 board members and 300 members on the Rockaway peninsula and Broad Channel; and hosts membership meetings thrice a year open to anyone who wants to join.

At Saturday’s event, the honorees will be presented with an award and a special gift from the individual who nominated them. There will also be a Chinese auction with gifts donated by local businesses. This event is free. Locals Pay Tribute on Veterans Day Story and Photos

On Monday, November 12, while the annual Veterans Day parade marched through Manhattan, in Rockaway, a modest group of locals gathered at the Doughboy Statue on Beach 94th Street to honor veterans near and far.

On what was the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day, which

later became known as Veterans Day, the American Legion Daniel M. O’Connell Post #272 led the local ceremony where about 30 people gathered. The ceremony was made even more notable as American Legion in general also celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. Mike Honan acknowledged this as he led the ceremony with a prayer. This was followed by a reading by American Legion

and American Legion Auxiliary members, which focused on remembering those who have fought for our freedom, honoring those that continue to do so, and hopes for peace. In addition to acknowledging the contributions of all veterans, Post #272 also took time to remember those who are no longer with us, with a ceremonial playing of Taps on a bugle. The veterans on site paid tribute by saluting the Doughboy Statue as the somber song played in the background.

In keeping with the spirit of honoring veterans, on Sunday, November 17, at 12:30 p.m., the American Legion Daniel M. O’Connell Post #272 is hosting a luncheon for about 30 veterans and their support staff. The invited veterans will be treated to a meal and entertainment, but all are welcome to show their support.

“Everyone is invited to stop by and say hello to these veterans, shake their hands and see how we honor them,” Honan said.

Flight 587 Remembered 18 Years Later

As temperatures dropped on a wet Tuesday morning, it did not deter the families of the Flight 587 victims from remembering their loved ones at the annual ceremony marking the anniversary of the crash that killed 265 people on November 12, 2001.

Families from across the city once again returned to the Beach 116th Street Flight 587 memorial on Tuesday, November 12 to remember a tragedy that impacted those from Rockaway, all the way to the Dominican Republic. Eighteen years ago, more than 250 passengers and a crew boarded American Airlines Flight 587 to head to the capital of Santo Domingo on November 12, 2001. Just moments after takeoff, the flight came crashing down in Belle Harbor, with pieces of the plane spanning Beach 128th to Beach 131st Streets. All 260 people on board were killed instantly, as well as five local residents who were home on the day being ob-

served as Veterans Day in 2001; Thomas and Helen Concannon, Kathleen Lawler and her son, Christopher, and Franco Pomponio. Although the tragedy took place 18 years ago, on Tuesday, it was evident that the victims will never be forgotten.

Reverend Eric Cruz of St. John Chrysostom Catholic Parish in the Bronx began the ceremony with a prayer in both English and Spanish. “It is right the day should not pass from the memory,” he said, wishing the families peace as they carry this tragedy with them.

At 9:16 a.m., Detective Dan Byrnes of the NYPD Ceremonial Unit and Firefighter James Sorokac of the FDNY Ceremonial Unit rang a bell to mark the exact moment when Flight 587 crashed, 18 years before. This was followed by family members reading the names of all 265 victims.

Mayor Bill de Blasio, who attends the ceremony each year, also provided some words of comfort for the family. “Eighteen years ago, it was what appeared to be a beautiful morning starting out normal, and then a shock, a tragedy as Flight 587 fell from the sky. Two hundred and sixty-five lives lost, and countless hearts broken, and families from Belle Harbor to Santo Domingo felt their lives were shattered. It’s

De Blasio also acknowledged the neighbors in Belle Harbor who took action, including the many police and firefighters nearby who tried to help any victims and neighbors in nearby homes that were on fire. He also acknowledged the support system that the families of the victims have formed amongst each other over the years, and the support from New Yorkers following the tragedy.

New Coach Helps Lead Beach Channel Dolphins to the Playoffs

The Beach Channel Dolphins are jumping into the playoffs, thanks to some hard work and dedication from the players, support from family and friends and a new coach at the helm.

On Saturday, November 16 at noon, the Beach Channel Dolphins football team will kick off the playoff season for the first time in a long time. On Sunday, November 3, the team played against William E. Grady for the final game of the regular season and came out on top. Now, with a 7-2 record, they advance to the playoffs, a goal that the team has worked hard to achieve year after year, and which has been made possible, in part, due to a new coach.

About three seasons ago, coach John Crawford stepped on to the Beach Channel Campus field once again. While the coaching gig for the team was

lamenting those years during my first year of teaching at Sheepshead Bay High School. I wanted to get more involved and that’s when a gym teacher introduced me to Fred Snyder. I had an informal interview with him, and he took me on to the staff as a special teams coach and I went from there,” Crawford said.

The East Meadow resident and high school physics teacher says he couldn’t ignore the itch to get back into football as an adult.

“You never really get rid of that bug to stay involved. So I was

for 17 consecutive seasons and winning three championships in that time. However, the Shark still dreamed of being a Dolphin.

“I had played for Beach Channel and I always looked at their program, thinking I wanted to be with them. I was very happy at Sheepshead, but Beach Channel was the place I would’ve left Sheepshead for,” Crawford said.

The choice was made for him when a decision was made in 2013 to close Sheepshead Bay High School. As the school was transitioning to a school by another name, Crawford was let go as the coach in 2015, but it worked out for the best. A position had opened up at Beach Channel a month later. “It was my dream job. Fortunately they hired me. It was one of the most fortuitous turns in my career,” Crawford said.

NEW COACH Continued from Page 14 team has taken time. Last year, the team finished last in PSAL football with a 0-9 record. “We didn’t win a game,” Crawford said. But they never gave up.

“I’m proud of the kids that persevered through that. They put up with all of the stress and naysayers. When you lose, 0-9, it’s hard to show up to practice that last week, but they did, and then they showed up for off-season training. I often remind them that if you allow the process to work, good things will happen and that they should be proud of themselves for moving forward.

It’s a life lesson more than just an athletics lesson,” Crawford said.

This year, the team learned that lesson had some merit.

With a 7-2 record and now third in the PSAL rankings, the team has built itself back up and is going to the playoffs.

Crawford said the comeback was a group effort. Since he stepped in as coach, a Beach Channel Alumni Football asso-

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2019 ciation has formed, with former players throwing their support behind their alma mater. “They formed a 501c3 and allowed us to do a lot of fundraising to supplement the program,” Crawford said. Also, this year, a dedicated Football Parents Association has formed, with parents getting more involved and showing enthusiastic support for their kids and the team as a whole.

“There’s a nice core of parents who are very supportive and highly involved in the program and it’s nice to see,” he said.

However most of all, Crawford credits the team that has worked hard toward their goal of making it to playoffs. “The kids seem more committed to the program.

The kids can choose to either be committed or not be, and all you can do is set an example, but they’ve followed through. They showed up to practice in the offseason and they’re motivated to work out and eventually they just started holding each other accountable,” Crawford said.

Crawford says that some of his senior and junior players, who serve as captains, are at the head

of that effort. The captains are running backs, Eric Pryor and Masiah Franklin, and nose tackle and offensive players, Wendell Green III, Andrew Reliford and Jadon Nembhard. “These are the guys than run the team. Some of these guys have been through some really bad seasons and have gone through trying, stressful situations, but these are the kids I trust because I know they can handle the stress of a bad situation and lead the other kids through thick and thin. They’re captains for a reason and we’re a much better football team when they’re on the field,” Crawford said.

Anything can happen when the Dolphins take the Beach Channel Campus Field on Saturday, November 16 for the first playoff game against the Stuyvesant Peg-

legs, currently ranked in ninth, but Crawford is hopeful. “I am cautiously optimistic, as I have been for every game. We’re going to kick off and play and that’s all I can guarantee,” he said. However, he does hope for further success.

While Crawford’s major goal was for the team to make it to the playoffs, he’s given them a reason to stay motivated. “At the end of the regular season, I told them that their goal is to ruin my Thanksgiving. If that happens, that means we’ll still be practicing then,” Crawford said.

Crawford hopes that the community will help that goal come true by showing their support on Saturday. “Come down and support the kids because they’re really excited. We’re been getting some nice support from the neighborhood, but the more, the better. It’s going to be a good game,” Crawford said.

RT: What are your Rockaway legs and affinity for the community?

ND: I grew up in Long Island, but the ocean and surfing community are what brought me to Rockaway six years ago. I live in Rockaway Park during the summer and Rincón, PR in the wintertime. So, being that I am a surfer, living by the ocean is very important to me and I fell in love with Rockaway, not just because of the surf, but the local arts scene.

that I went to school for metalsmithing because it would have made the learning curve a lot easier. I actually went to school for physical education, but when I graduated it was at a time when it was tough to get a teaching job. So I moved to Fire Island and then to Puerto Rico, where I was just working in restaurants. However, there I had a lot of time because it was a freer pace of life, and I started colRT: How did your journey be- lecting seashells and sea glass on the beach. I came up with gin with metalsmithing?

ND: I always say that I wish the idea of making some ear-

rings with them and so I taught myself how to make these earrings. People gave me so many compliments, and I started selling them. So what initiated as a slow-growing hobby for fun became my passion. Soon, doing wire work wasn’t enough, and I started learning about manipulating metals and how to solder by reading magazines and tutorials online. Then I met a retired jeweler, who gave me pointers on how to tweak my technique, which was extremely helpful and five years later, he is still my mentor.

RT: You have quite the social media following. How did that develop?

ND: I believe it kicked off when I started selling at markets and meeting people in person.

An Avoidable Tragedy ed A train.

Ada Martinez was the 26th cyclist to die on New York City roads this year. In all of 2018, 10 cyclists were killed. “Police gave scant—and contradictory details—about what happened next, using language to exonerate the driver,� Streetsblog said about the incident. “It’s certainly not the first time the NYPD has put out a narrative that exonerates the driver and is based mostly, if not entirely on the testimony of that same driver,� Streetsblog also reported.

The poor infrastructure of stop signs, traffic signals are what really caused this accident. If a simple signal light was in place, allowing for cars traveling eastbound, a green light, and for cyclists traveling westbound, a red signal, or a large Stop sign on the ground giving cyclists a clue that danger lies ahead, this could have been avoided.

On the warm evening of Sept 27, 2019, as the sunset’s warm colors of pink, yellow and purple filled the sky, many residents of the Rockaways were still out and about, enjoying the evening. My parents, Ada and Rudy Martinez, were among those people. Together, they enjoyed some of the great things Rockaway has to offer in the summer. Most days were spent enjoying yoga with Kevin the Yoga Guru on the beach, and most weekends were spent enjoying the live music played by their favorite band, Squid, as they danced into the night by Caracas and Low Tide. Life as they knew it, was just beginning. Newly retired with a healthy tribe of seven grandchildren, Ada and Rudy were completely enjoying all of what Rockaway could offer.

Unfortunately, the crash between Ada Martinez and a private ambulette driver of Mt. Sinai changed everything for everyone that evening.

As Ada and Rudy were traveling westbound along the designated bike lanes on Rockaway Freeway, tragedy hit. “As its name would suggest, Rockaway Freeway is designed to move cars quickly, not to safely accommodate people on bikes and on foot,� Transportation Alternatives spokesman Joe Cutrufo told the New York Post in October. “Anyone traveling outside of a car here is a risk due to speeding drivers and poor visibility.�

According to police reports,

Ada was in a designated bike lane when she tried to turn left on to Beach 94th Street and steered into the path of the van. She tried to swerve to avoid the vehicle but fell and was crushed by the van.

She died from her injuries, two weeks later. The driver was not charged.

Last year, there were 32 crashes in the short Rockaway Beach portion of the Rockaway Freeway, which has poor visibility for pedestrians, drivers and cyclists because it is beneath the elevat-

When he returned home in the late '60s, more people were protesting the war than thanking veterans for their service. However, I do believe that we have come a long way from that type of climate. He always wears his Vietnam veteran hat.

On Saturday November 9, he was in the bagel store on 129th Street. While inside, he met a young man and his child. This young gentleman, who clearly had been born after the events of that war, thanked my husband for his service, and treated him to his morning meal. While exiting the store, others also thanked him for his service.

Cuomo Threatens National Grid Over Gas Moratorium Governor Andrew M. Cuomo is putting his foot down when it comes to National Gridâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s moratorium on new gas hookups. On Tuesday, November 12, Cuomo sent a letter to National Grid CEO John Pettigrew and President John Bruckner, warning them that they have 14 days to rectify the situation, or they face having their certificate to operate revoked for downstate NY. In May, after the New York Department of Environmental Conservation denied permits for the Williams Northeast Supply Enhancement Project, a proposed natural gas pipeline that would consist of 23-miles of new pipeline from New Jersey to Rockaway, National Grid set up a moratorium on any new gas connections, saying the supply would not be there without the new pipeline.

The moratorium has impacted thousands of new developments, homes and businesses, including new local restaurant Batesyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s,

Ghost Bike in Broad Channel

Last week, a ghostly white bicycle appeared in Broad Channel.

It marks where cyclist Bogdan Darmetko was struck and killed on Sunday, October 13, near the intersection of East 4th Road and Cross Bay Boulevard.

Channel resident Matt Miner, whose home the accident occurred in front of, wanted to make sure Darmetko was not forgotten.

“One of my old friends is big into bicycle culture and put me in touch with the Ghost Bike crew,” he said. “I asked them for it.”

“I’ll be maintaining the memorial site, in Spring when weeds grow, etc.”

According to the NYC Ghost Bike Project, the stark memori-

als draw “attention to an unsafe street. With that attention, we seek to change the culture on New York City streets...to foster a mutual respect among all people who share them.”

By 2018, 164 ghost bikes marking the known deaths of 198 cyclists and pedestrians on the city’s roadways had appeared since

2005. Offshoots of the project exist in countries all over the world.

Darmetko was the 25th NYC bicycle fatality this year.

In Broad Channel, Miner noted, “People have been respectful so far. Today there was a lantern and flowers at the memorial and a lantern at the exact spot he died.”

Taking an evening picture re-

cently of the Ghost Bike memorial, Miner noticed something peculiar. When he expanded the image, he saw a newly placed photo, with Darmetko looking back at him through the spokes.

Cuomo goes as far as to say, “the ‘moratorium’ is either a fabricated device or a lack of competence. There is no legitimate need for it in the first place.

There are existing short-term options to contract for non-piped gas from other sources, which National Grid either deliberately, negligently or incompetently did not secure.”

“National Grid's failure to address the supply issue, the abuse of their customers, the adverse economic impact caused by stalling private development, and the associated diminution of tax revenues to local govern-

ments, clearly demonstrate that National Grid's operations are not in the public interest.”

Cuomo ends his letter by asking the utility company to take immediate action to rectify the situation or face the revoking of their certificate.

Some, like Senator Joseph Addabbo, are applauding Cuomo’s efforts. “I appreciate Governor Andrew Cuomo stepping up to help protect residents across the city, especially my constituents on the Rockaway Peninsula and northern mainland communities, by issuing his letter to National Grid of his intent to revoke its certificate to operate its downstate gas franchise in the next 14 days,” Addabbo said.

“Nat Grid should not be allowed to hold these residents—some who are still not back in their homes after losing everything to Superstorm Sandy—hostage by not providing its vital gas service, especially with winter right around the corner. Whether Nat Grid shapes up, or an alternative provider is found, it is vital that the people are provided with reliable gas service.”

I share a very special story with many messages—some are clear and others are still a mystery. Maybe my story can touch someone who has also suffered the loss of a loved one and give you hope that there are angels who can touch us when we least expect it.

Thirty-two years ago, my family lost my younger brother, John, in a fatal car accident. He was 21 years old. It would be the most devastating and heartbreaking loss in my family. We would never again be our large family of nine.

John was a really special brother. He smiled all the time and was kind to everyone he met. I don’t think he had any enemies and he was truly the salt of the earth. He was the guy who always made you laugh.

It has taken a lifetime to heal from John’s death but our family would learn to turn a negative into a positive by never forgetting John’s free and giving spirit. We would overcome and become strong, compassionate people with our angel John guiding us.

Our new life’s motto became “live life to its fullest.” We had learned first-hand that there are no guarantees in life. “One day at a time, sweet Jesus,” was my Mom’s favorite song, and it resonated even more strongly after John’s passing.

My three brothers went to Power Memorial Academy High School in NYC. It was a great school where they would meet lifelong friends.

Recently, my brothers, Alex and Patrick, went to a Power Memorial Alumni Dinner where several alumni including one of our local guys, John Lovett, was honored. Congratulations to John Lovett! What a well-deserved honoree.

Patrick met one my brother, John's, classmates, Dennis Mooney. He was racing around in his wheelchair selling raffle tickets. He had been paralyzed in 1987 from a car accident. My brother John also had his car accident in 1987. He proceeded to tell my brother, Patrick, that he and John were good friends. He shared a very poignant daily act of a warm friendship between two teenage kids. John would buy and read the NY Daily News on the subway on the way to school, and he would do the same in the morning with the NY Post every day, and every day they would swap papers for the read on the train ride home.

What a lovely gesture between two friends at a cost of twenty-five cents.

Dennis also told my brother last week that when he left the hospital in 1987, after nine months of treatment and rehabilitation, he called my family’s home and one of John’s sisters answered the phone and became very upset when he asked to speak to John, perhaps feeling that it was a cruel joke. He had no idea John had passed away on July 14, 1987, which was the same day that he was in his Continued on page 29

BE WELL , BE HAPPY Continued from Page 28 car accident. His parents had been aware of John’s passing, but because of his serious accident and rehabilitation challenges, they did not want to upset him more, so they hadn’t told him about John.

Years later, Dennis would ask a good friend of his why he didn’t tell him about John’s passing. His friend responded, “I thought you figured it out during your nine months in the hospital since John would have visited you.”

This new information that John’s friend shared generated so many warm feelings in my family. When someone gives you new information about your loved one who has passed, it feels really nice to hear. It feels like a gift that brings them back to life in a way. It also brought to light how Dennis survived a terrible accident on the same day that John had passed, and overcame all odds to “live a life worth living.”

I only wish I had known him throughout his entire life. I can only imagine what he and his family went through when he lost the ability to walk at age 22. He is truly remarkable in his life of service. I have not met him but I plan on reaching out to him to introduce myself as the sister who may have picked up the phone.

Hold The Wheel Aging places burdens on not just the person getting older, but the family as well. I have been in practice for over 36 years and I have seen many occasions where Grandpa refuses to quit driving even though he gets lost going to the store or gets in accidents. Older drivers comprise 19 percent of licensed drivers in the U.S. Although drivers over the age of 65 are more likely to respect speed limits, wear seatbelts, and avoid alcohol before driving, they are statistically more likely to be involved in fatal motor vehicle accidents. Drivers older than 75 years experience fatal accidents at rates higher than all other

drivers over age 29. That said, studies have shown that older drivers who cease driving are at increased risk of social isolation, depression, the need for long-term care, and death.

Driving safely requires multiple intact cognitive capacities including complex attention, visuospatial skills, working memory, executive function, judgement, and insight into one’s own driving abilities.

There have been multiple studies that have shown that even mild dementia impairs these abilities and raises the risk of accidents. Driving is a visually demanding task. Reductions in visual acuity, visual field, and

contrast sensitivity are associated with common eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.

Because of this, many states require licensing agencies to mandate in-person license renewals for older individuals, especially those aged 85 and older. Physical impairments may also interfere with safe driving.

For example, issues like upper or lower extremity weakness, loss of range of motion of the neck or extremities, or difficulty walking may negatively affect driving ability, as may conditions like hearing loss, vertigo, sleep apnea, seizure disorders, and heart disease. Medications that may affect consciousness could also be troublesome. These include antihypertensives, diabetic and seizure medications, antiparkinsonian agents, opioids, and benzodiazepines (Valium, Xanax).

The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) has developed the Clinician’s Guide to Assessing and Counseling Older Drivers, 4th edition. Physicians are often put into situations where family members express concern over

their older loved one’s ability to drive safely. In my experience, once the physician has assessed the older driver and agrees with the family’s concerns, many older patients flat out refuse to quit driving. Some states require the physician to inform the patient who refuses to stop driving that the physician has both an ethical and legal responsibility to report the patient to the driver’s licensing agency. New York does not have this requirement. Most older adults will experience a period of driving retirement of at least six to 10 years before the end of their life. Alternative transportation options need to be considered, for example public transport, rides by friends or relatives, delivery services, or ride services. The hardest part, of course, is getting Grandma or Grandpa to agree to give up their car.

Praiseworthy

Last weekend's 100 Year Centennial celebration at Broad Channel's VFW Prince-Wynn Post #260 was a resounding success, exceeding all expectations, and so it goes without saying that the men and women up at the Post should be acknowledged for all their selfless work towards making this such a memorable event.

A special thank you is also extended to our local wordsmith and reporter, Katie McFadden, for her terrific article (Cheers to 100 Years for VFW Post 260) in The Rockaway Times last week. Katie's article played no small part in helping to increase attendance at the event.

Most importantly, it goes without saying, the VFW Post extends its sincere appreciation to all of you out there who took the time this past Veterans’ Day holiday weekend to gather together in celebration and support of that organization's 100th Centennial and their 100 years of service to our local veterans and their families.

Congratulations to our friend and neighbor, John Spataro, for his recent endeavor to attain a judgeship in New York's Supreme Court's 11th Judicial District. Unfortunately, John didn't win his election, but he did manage to score almost 4%

of the total vote. No mean feat for a political newbie! Besides, when you think about it, who the hell actually takes the time to vote for the judgeship positions on these ballots? As for myself, I hate to leave any box unchecked so I always use a little trick I learned back in my civics class at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School over in Brooklyn. Always check the 3rd option down and you are almost guaranteed a 75% chance of picking the winner. One thing I must say about John, though—he ran a clean campaign, no negative attack ads and none of those annoying "Vote For" lawn signs all over town. Before you think I am being too picky, you should keep in mind that it is always important to look closely at those lawn signs just prior to any election.

Last time I voted for a real estate agent without realizing it.

A man from St. John’s advised the community that there will be a mobile health van providing flu shots on November 23, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the RISE Center on Beach 58th and Rockaway Beach Blvd., and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hammel Houses Community Center.

Glenn DiResto provided updates on the Peninsula Hospital redevelopment project, known as Edgemere Commons. On Tuesday the City Council Land Use Committee overheard the proposal. DiResto advised CB14 that most of CB14’s input was ignored. CB14 had recommended the 2,200-unit project be reduced to 1,100 to 1,500 units, but it was only reduced by 150 and will be 2,050 units. “That’s 219 units per acre,” DiResto explained. “Arverne View is just 73 units per acre,” he said for comparison. He also said the Area Median Income requirements for the development weren’t changed to follow CB14’s recommendations. Looking on the bright side, DiResto said there will be a 25,000 sq. ft. community center and $2 million allocated to youth and community development, meaning money for nonprofits. DiResto advised the

board to make a motion to ask the developer, Arker, exactly where all of this money will go. The board later voted to do this, with a nearly-unanimous yes vote.

Democratic District Leader Lew Simon spoke about some upcoming events including the next Good Government Regular Democratic Club meeting, which will feature all of the Democratic candidates running for Queens Borough President. The meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 14 at the Beacon Nursing Center (140 Beach 113th Street). Also, the Beach 116th Street Christmas tree lighting is coming up soon. The event will take place at 5 p.m. on November 30 and will include free food donated by Ciros and Last Stop this year. It’s taking place earlier in the hopes that the weather will be warmer.

Lastly, a representative from Senator James Sanders’ office stopped by to let the community know about its recent HVAC training session, which 36 people signed up for to receive free training that could lead to a job. While the Rockaway program is full,

there will be others in Queens.

Stop by Sanders’ office for more information. She also said that in response to recent shootings, Sanders has sent a letter to the governor and mayor, asking them to provide more support for community-based organizations that work to keep youth out of trouble.

After public speaking, representatives from the JFK Airport Redevelopment project stopped by to provide some updates. The redevelopment will allow for job potential and community benefits for those in the Rockaways and nearby areas. They are currently working on outreach efforts for input from the community and are accepting feedback on their website: www.ANewJFK.com. A groundbreaking for the airport redevelopment is expected to take place in 2020, with the first gate expected to open in 2023, and a total completion by 2025. On Thursday, November 21, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., they’ll be holding an open house to further explain some of their initiatives and opportunities for the community. It will take place at 144-33 Jamaica Avenue in Jamaica, Queens.

Veterans at Far Rockaway Center Honored By the Military On November 7, Far Rockaway Center on Virginia Street in Far Rockaway, had an allout Veterans Day celebration.

The 100-bed nursing and rehabilitation center started with a color guard, consisting of bagpiper, Andy MacVoy, leading U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Maureen Daley carrying the flag. Then the facility played a rendition of Whitney Houstonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Star-Spangled Bannerâ&#x20AC;? and Recreation Director Zelideth Reyes made a speech welcoming everyone to the ceremony. Facility Administrator Sol Blumenfeld also made a speech thanking their guests and the 12 vets

who are residents of the facility. Among those present were U.S. Airforce Airman Elijah Green, U.S. Army Specialist Leroy Castleberry, U.S. Army Specialist Charles Evans, U.S. Army Sergeant Jose Rosales, U.S. Army Private Howard Burton and U.S. Army Lieutenant James Butler. Life With Our “Artistic” Child

A Bird’s-Eye View About Thanksgiving from An Autism Mom The Turkeypocalypse is just a mere two weeks away, and I’m already cringing. As a proud mom of a beautiful nonverbal eleven-year-girl on the autism spectrum, I’ve been there,

done that, wrote the book about what it’s like during the holidays convening with our small circle of relatives and friends.

phones, that some may assume she is rocking to Bad Bunny or Taylor Swift, but no, she is doing what I envy—blocking out noise—seemingly politely. So, at the Thanksgiving table, she does the same—blocking out the chatter and well-meaning (but as my dad would say, OMG!) bombardment of questions about her progress and very particular food preferences. Folks in the following, here’s my advice about what not to make the focus of the dinner table discourse about our special-needs children, and OMG!—any child with particular nuances. And please keep this in mind, this is not about sympathy—but empathy!

1. Please don’t ask when do I think she will talk, or for other children, why they are fixated on when the pizza is arriving.

My daughter eats like she is on the paleo diet, and loves vegetables and meat. Don’t ask why she is not eating the apple pie you lovingly prepared or is just licking the frosting off a cupcake. That’s just what she likes.

2. When she has to go, she has

The Rockaway Times to go! Sometimes it may be because she needs to go to the loo, and abruptly may detach from your embrace. Or she doesn’t like the attention and wants to retreat to a quieter space. When our children have to go, they have to go! It’s not personal.

3. Though she has special needs, she can eat for herself, don’t try to feed her; and during the Lord’s prayer, she intrinsically knows to keep quiet, so please don’t shush her.

4. Don’t ask about her progress. Just allow us to enjoy being in the company of family and friends. Parents are already stressed, we don’t need the extra reminders of what you perceive are children are lacking.

5. Ha! As a family, we’re notoriously always late. Sometimes my daughter is having a meltdown or we are literally sitting on the staircase pleading her to “Let’s go.” It takes time and sensitivity to understand what she is feeling.

Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just frustrated that she canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t express herself. Please donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ignore her. She sees and feels it.

7. My daughter doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like crowds, loud chattering; she prefers solitude. As parents, we wish we could break the ice wall when it comes to communication, so instead of judging or condemning, just be understanding.

8. If our children suddenly get excited and start jumping around, please donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t yell and remind us to keep an eye on them.

This is why Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sometimes reluctant to take my daughter to holiday gatherings. Just like when we check our coats upon arrival, check your opinions.

9. Please talk to our children; acknowledge them. In the case with my daughter, she understands EVERYTHING, so just be understanding. My daughter is deep as the oceanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s abyss. Just

try to connect. Trust me, our children can teach you a thing or two about why verbosity is overrated.

10. And the most important of allâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Just love our children for who they are. They are different, albeit challenged, but beautiful in that they teach us the essence of unconditional love. It is Thanksgiving, so please keep the spirit by being thankful and accepting. Our children deserve a place where they are accepted for who they are. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not about turkey or pie; maybe itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chips and pizzaâ&#x20AC;Śwhatever the meal, if it makes our children feel loved, then thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Thanksgiving!

Serves: 2 Ingredients: 1-1/2 pounds shelled, deveined shrimp 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 lemon, cut in slices (pits removed) Old Bay Seasoning Small mozzarella balls (6-8 quartered) 10 grape tomatoes cut in half Whole wheat angel hair pasta Directions: In a small bowl, sprinkle shrimp with Old Bay Seasoning.

Add the slices of lemon. Cover

and refrigerate for at least ½ hour.

Boil the pasta to al dente.

Drain. Reserve a little water.

In a large pan, heat the oil.

Add the shrimp with the lemons. Stir until lightly pink.

Add the pasta. Mix. Add the tomatoes and stir to incorporate. Add the mozzarella. If dry, add a little pasta water.

Trouble With Sis Dear Enchantress, What do you advise? I have friends and family members that have become toxic in my life. Me and my sister, we never got along. She is older than me by six years. I always adored her and looked up to her and she never thought anything of me. At my father's funeral and for 25 years, we still never spoke. I have tried to be a good little sister, but she always puts me down and dismisses me. She uses other family members as pawns, and I have cut her off.

We have not spoken in many years, and now she is using my mom, my brother, and my niece as chess pieces against me.

What should I do?

Years of unwound and unspoken silences and wounds.

Family dynamics are like nothing else in the world. They are the people who we know and who know us best, including the stuff we wish could forget.

So, first I want to say, be nice to yourself and, at any moment, you can decide to shift how you look at a family situation, and commit to that, and no one else has to change.

So, how do you want to feel about your sister, and really, how

do you want to feel when you relate to your mom, brother and niece? My first question: ideally, how do you want to feel about your sister when you are around her? Be aware to answer in what you do want, not what you don't want. So, this will help you reverse-engineer how to work with yourself to achieve this feeling.

Next, is it possible to imagine in your sisterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s world, she is not wrong? For whatever reason, you see and feel her acting the way she does, she thinks she has a right to, and she believes she's acting correctly? You may think she is wrong, (and you may be right) and still, if you can witness (as if it weren't your situation) that her mind is set the way it is, you can move towards compassion. This is not easy, but keep compassion in your mind, for your own peace of mind.

I always love the idea and I have clients do this all the time, write a letter. Good old fashioned pen and paper. Who would you write the letter to? You will not be sending this. It can be a letter to your sister, the wisest most enchanted part of yourself, your

mom, your niece, your brother, God or your highest power, your father, etc. Use this letter to express all the stuff, the feelings, the thoughts, everything out of your head and onto paper. Write out as detailed as you can, and then fold it, tuck it away for 24 hours, and then come back to it, burn it, or let it dissipate in water.

Then trust that you have done enough for the meantime.

Gateway National Listed As At-Risk Alex Zablocki, Executive Director, Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, alerted The Rockaway Times to a report listing Gateway National as one of ten sites that are vulnerable to climate change: The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) unveiled Landslide, its annual thematic report about threatened and atrisk landscapes. The Landslide 2019: Living in Nature report highlights ten cultural landscapes throughout the nation that are threatened by flooding, wildfires, regional drought, and other effects of human-induced climate change. The ten sites demonstrate the wide array of effects from climate change and the scope of its impact on our natural and cultural resources. Ranging from small parcels to thousands of acres, the sites are also geographically and typologically diverse, comprising agrarian landscapes, living communities, and historical monuments and stretching

from Hawaii to the Heartland.

The report provides a history of each site, outlines the threats posed to them, and ways for people to get involved. Gateway National Recreation Area is one of the sites listed. Gateway consists of parks and protected land in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, New York, Jamaica Bay, and Sandy Hook, New Jersey.

First issued in 2003, Landslide has highlighted more than 300 significant at-risk parks, gardens, horticultural features, working landscapes, and other places that collectively embody our shared landscape heritage.

According to Landslide, designations have resulted in advocacy that has saved numerous sites.

Within the Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway, acres of marsh islands have been lost to a changing climate at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, while beaches at Riis Park have seen unprecedented erosion in recent years.

“As oceans rise, so does the risk to important landscapes and ecosystems within Gateway and its national treasures such as former military fortifications at Fort Tilden and New York City’s first municipal airport at Floyd Bennett Field,”

Zablocki said. “The Landslide 2019: Living in Nature report highlights the risks climate change poses to Gateway National Recreation Area. Raising awareness of these threats and engaging the public in solutions, advocacy and stewardship of these lands is key to helping combat the problem.”
